The turn of the screw Chapter 1: Bly The story is about a young governess that started to look after two children in Bly. She arrived there in June. First she met the housekeeper, Mrs Grose, and then she met Flora, the little girl. She was like an angel and she was really happy showing the house to her new governess. On Wednesday, she received a letter from school. It is about Miles, the little boy of the house. He had been expelled from his school and he couldn’t come back there. They were surprised because Mrs Grose said that the boy wasn’t bad. Next day, the governess met Miles and she thought that he was a good boy. The governess had curiosity about the last governess of the house because she had died, so she asked Mrs Grose about her. She told that the governess went out for holidays and she had never come back. The new governess usually went out for a walk and one day she was shocked. She saw a man in the top of the tower and she started to make herself questions. Who that man was and why he was there.

Chapter 2: Peter Quint The governess didn’t know yet who the man of the tower was and she started to forget that but one Sunday, she and Mrs Grose decided to go to the church, and when she went to pick up her gloves, she saw the face of the man behind the window. He was looking for someone inside. The governess was afraid and she left quickly but there wasn’t anyone outside. Mrs Grose saw her and she asked the governess what was wrong and why she was so worried. The governess explained to her all about the man and she was shocked when Mrs Grose told her that the man was the ghost of an old servant of the house that had died some time before. Then, she realized that he was looking for Miles. One afternoon the governess left with Flora. They went near the lake for having fun, and there she saw Flora looking to the other side of the water because there was someone there.

Chapter 3: The Women in Black The governess runs to Mrs.Grose to tell her that she had seen someone in the garden. A black woman, she thought it was Miss Jessel, the former governess. Mrs.Grose believes her and tells her that Quint spent time with Miles. And Quint, Miss Jessel, Miles and Flora were very close. In the next few days the governess saw Quint on the stairs. Next day he again saw Flora looking out the window, there was Miss Jessel watching someone on the tower. But that was not Miss Jessel, was Miles.

Chapter 4: The End of Summer The governess told Mrs. Grose what she had seen and thought that Quint and Miss Jessel always were together, but she could not see them. One afternoon Mrs.Grose and the governess went to church, Miles stopped the governess before entering the church and he asked her when he would go again to school. Then he entered into the church.

Chapter 5: The Schoolroom The governess didn´t follow Miles into the church. She went outside, thinking. She was afraid and Miles knew it. Miles could use her fear to get more freedom. When they got back, the governess went to the schoolroom and had a shock. There at the table, with her head in her hands, was Miss Jessel. The governess told Mrs. Grose her strange experience. The governess thought that the best thing to do was to send the children to their uncle. The governess and Mrs. Grose thought that Miles was evil. A night she began the letter. She went to Miles´s room. They were talking he didn´t want to say anything about his past or about Miss Jessel and Mr. Quint. He wants his uncle to come.

Chapter 6: The Lake The uncle´s letter in its envelope was still in the governess´s pocket. An afternoon Miles said to the governess to play with him. The governess couldn´t say no. They want to the schoolroom, Miles was playing the piano. But suddenly the governess didn’t know where Flora was. The governess asked Miles, and he began to laugh and sing. The governess with Mrs. Grose went out to look for Flora. The governess thought that Miles with Quint had got a clever plan to get Flora to be with Jessel. The governess and Mrs. Grose went near the lake with a boat. Flora was there.

Chapter 7: Flora There, was Jessel opposite them. But Flora said that she couldn’t see anybody. Flora took Mrs Grose’s hand and they went back home. Next day, the governess asked Mrs Grose about Flora and she told her that Flora didn’t want to see her any more. The governess had an idea, Mrs Grose and Flora would leave Bly, and they would go to London with her uncle, but they should get to London before the letter. Mrs Grose told her that the letter hadn’t been sent, Miles had probably taken it.

Chapter 8: The end Grose and Flora left Bly. The governess and Miles stayed at home. The governess had the feeling that they would talk now. They were in the schoolroom when suddenly, she saw Quint across the window, Miles couldn’t see him. The governess was happy because she was winning. Miles was expelled from the school because he said things. She asked Miles what those things were, but Quint didn’t want Miles to tell about it.

Although Quint wasn’t there, he seemed to be winning. Miles went up to the window and he fell down. The governess took him in her arms… Miles was dead.
