ANNUAL REPORT

¿ Who are we?

Proyecto Mono Tocón (PMT) is a non-profit Peruvian NGO, registered as a development NGO with the Peruvian Agency for International Cooperation (APCI). It was created in 2009 by the French association Le Conservatoire pour la Protection des Primates, that supports a number of conservation projects for primates all over the world.

Evaluation of flora, fauna and water sources in two AwajĂşn Native Communities

One of the objectives of PMT is to collect data on the biodiversity of Peru. The native communities of Shampuyacu and Alto Mayo need to know their biodiversity and its appreciation to improve the implementation of their development plans.

During the year we conducted field inventories, taking data on amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals that inhabit the forests of the two communities.

In both communities, the value of the use of wildlife is related to the knowledge that the community has of its natural environment. There were 83 identified species of fauna that are used in the community to satisfy their basic requirements for food, medicine, sale, obtaining pets and spiritual-religious aspects.

Connectivity and valuation of fauna in

To complement the long term Tingana project with funding from Conservaciรณn Internacional Peru, a study on connectivity a social assessment was carried out.

The connectivity model showed a "fauna passage zone" that has now been transformed from forest to rice field. It is recommended to produce a more updated vegetation coverage map to detect the most suitable areas to connect.

The interviewees considered large-headed capuchin (Sapajus macrocephalus) as the most damaging species for corn and rice field, at the same time it is the primate most valued economically and red howler monkey valued for its meat. We hope that these results serve to take appropriate measures for the conservation and protection of local wildlife.

Habituation of Titis This year we continued with the monitoring of habituated groups, but also with groups living in a habitat with a different level of disturbance.

The fieldwork of this project ended in 2016, but this year we published a small book compiling the experiences of monitoring primates of the Alto Mayo Protected Forest.

Local communities using up-to-date

technology for the protection of a critically endangered primate species

Four Conservation Concessions (Ojos de Agua, Pailayco, Tres Quebradas and Shitariyacu) participated to this project. Local partners supported us taking titi data within the conservation areas. In addition, deforestation alerts registered by the Global Forest Watch platform were veriÂŹfied in the fiÂŹeld. It was not possible to verify 100% of the alerts received due to land traffickers threatening our field workers). We also collaborated with purchasing and installing materials that help identify the limits of concessions (landmarks, warning signs).

During this year we have diversified our activities to guarantee the protection of the area.

We conducted a socioeconomic evaluation in the village of Villanueva Reubicada to reinforce the information of the Environmental Management Declaration (Management plan).

Apart from giving administrative support, for us it is important that local partners know about other sustainable development strategies. Therefore we invited the president of the local conservation association (ASBOPAI) to a workshop on sustainable management of native bees - meliponicultura ", which was followed by an introductory talk aimed at all local partners.

After three months, the children of Villanueva Reubicada got their first harvest of vegetables

Our work went beyond the local conservation association.

As it is important that the entire population of Villanueva identiÂŹfies themselves with the Pailayco Forest, we financed the painting of a mural with the fauna of its forest.

With the children of the educational institution we made a school garden where they harvested vegetables.

At the end of the year we organised a chocolate-party for the whole population and donated toys that we collected in Moyobamba.

C.C. Shitariyacu Two years after being presented, the management plan was finally accepted by the ARA (Regional Environmental Authority).

We are providing logistical support to the local conservation association (ADESCORP) to get the institutional support from Electro Oriente S.A. and we helped them with the change of the board.

This year we have carried out handicraft workshops aimed at ADESCORP women members and the locality. They learned to make necklaces, bracelets and earrings; the products will be sold in Vallee de Singes Primate Park.

C.C. Tres Quebradas We support the local conservation association with request from the forestry authorities about the limits of the Conservation Concession and the changes use of the land (from production to conservation). We started with setting up a community radio project that will be executed in 2018.

“Investigator for a day�

Within our participation for the Ibero-American Environmental Week we organized this experience with 10 children, they learned about the methodologies used by a researcher. We finished the day with the ascent to the top of the hill to show the deforestation of the region, the main threat of the San Martin titi monkey.

Environmental Festivals This year we visited around 10 rural educational institutions with the theme of primates and their conservation. At the end of the festival, the results of our evaluations indicated that around 80% of children increased their knowledge about primates. We hope to continue next year with more themes.

Interactive garden The preparation of a space behind our office to teach and show children about primates, their conservation and positive actions took us all year. Where we had to design, paint, plant plants and prepare an eco-friendly environment.

Comic Carlos

We have donated the comic to libraries of private and public educational institutions, the Cultural Agency of the city of Moyobamba, universities, the "Environmental Caravan" (environmental education initiative of the regional government), Conservation Concessions and other protected areas, and to participants of the Primatology Congress. In this way we promote the knowledge of the primates of Peru and their conservation.

Interinstitucional PMT is part of the Management Committee of the Alto Mayo Protected Forest; we participated in meetings, the inauguration of TINI (children's land) and the Ecoferia in the Alto Valle farmhouse.

We are members two technical groups of the CAR (Regional Environmental Committee). With the Education and Environmental Communication (GTECA) group we work on the implementation of the Regional Environmental Education Policy (PREA) and in the Technical Group on Biodiversity we work on updating the Regional Biological Diversity Strategy.

We participated in the parade for “EarthHour”, organized by the Provincial Municipality of Moyobamba.

We participated in the Pan-Amazonian Social Forum (FOSPA) from April 28 to 31, in Tarapoto, where we participated to the "Panama-Amazon Communication for Life" debate.

We participated in the "Hazla por tu río Mayo" initiative, collecting solid waste at Punta San Juan and around the Mayo River.

“Hazla por tu río Mayo” collected more than 600 kg of solid waste.

BioCuencas Project - CI. We thank for the financing of 6 scientific studies on the stump monkey, fauna and flora of the San Martin region and for the donated materials.

We participated in the workshops for the elaboration of the National Plan for the Conservation of threatened primates.

We participate in the San Martín Expoamazónica 2017, a fair that promotes private investment, while generating cultural exchange and environmental conservation in the Amazonian regions.

1st Congress of the Peruvian Association of Primatology We participated with an exhibition within the symposium "Opportunities and challenges for the conservation of primates in community areas" and with four oral presentations of scientific works.

Venue: National University of Piura.

Two awards as best oral presentations.

We supported the participation of the president of the conservation association ABOFOA of the Conservation Concession Ojos de Agua.

Collaboration We cooperated with the presentation "Community-based primate conservation initiatives in Peru" presented by Fanny Cornejo, president of the Association of Peruvian Primatology at the Symposium: "Primatology, Biocultural Diversity and Sustainable Development in Tropical Forests", organized by UNESCO - Mexico. September 25 and 26.
