FEATURE STORY

How a Passion for Baking Turned into a Thriving Business

When you walk into Chikeke, a cozy bakery shop in Zvishavane, you are greeted by the mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked goods and the warm smile of the owner, Fadzai Mubvumbi.

Fadzai is not your typical baker. She started her business in 2015 as a part-time hobby while working as a civil engineer at Zinara, a road authority company. But after losing her job in 2020, she decided to turn her passion into a full-time career and never looked back.

Her love for baking and cooking dates back to her childhood, when she learned from her grandmother and mother how to make delicious treats for her family and friends. She always enjoyed experimenting with different recipes and flavors, but she never thought of herself as a professional baker. That changed when she enrolled in a baking course at Deluxe Cakes in Gweru, where her tutor, Nathan Kajeke, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue her dream.

Fadzai took his advice and started to grow her business gradually, first by taking orders from her social network and then by opening a shop in 2021. She says she draws inspiration from her parents, who were both entrepreneurs despite having full-time jobs. She also credits her customers, who give her positive feedback and support. She says she loves making people happy with her baked goods, which range from cakes and cupcakes to pies and breads.

Gems by PROWEB June 2023

Her story is one of resilience, creativity and passion. She proves that it is possible to turn a hobby into a successful business, even in challenging times. She hopes to inspire other aspiring bakers to follow their dreams and to share their joy with others

The name Chikeke was inspired by her parents who had nicknamed her that growing up as she was very cute and everyone used to call her that Chikeke means a small or tiny cake in Shona. That also inspired her mission which is to make sure all clients have the edible joy experience, whereby they can literally taste the joy, not just in eating only but also from the anticipation and excitement before the actual eating, the sensational burst of flavors in the mouth that leaves one wanting some more after, an experience which is now popularly known as the Chikekerisation process.

Chikeke bakes cakes mostly for occasions like birthdays, weddings, bridal showers and for those on the go Additionally, they make cupcakes, buns, muffins, snack platters (on request) and trifles as well. Besides baking they also offer gifting services where they do gift hampers, fresh flowers and the like, and every soon shall be venturing into events deco

She said what separates her business from other bakers is the fact that they paying attention to detail Most importantly it is the freshness of the ingredients and the innovative ideas used to come up with best mix and end result She also highlighted that having a shop is also very convenient for the clients as it eases accessibility

Like every business that is still on its starting and growth stage Fadzai faced different challenges on every step of the way, e g bagging clients at the initiation stage, without much experience and a great catalogue to showcase to potential clients in a business driven by familiarity and a strong trustworthy catalogue

Gems by PROWEB June 2023

She advised aspiring entrepreneurs to never stop learning, improving and mastering their craft and to maintain good relations with their customers as these tend to refer other customers as well.

She said one of the greatest lessons her pursuit in business has taught her is that things will not always go as planned especially with an economy like Zimbabwe's where you need to find ways to adapt, re-assess and come up with the solutions that lead to your growth

"I believe in continuous improvement of my skills such that if ever I am physically and financially able I will attend skills and business related workshops and seminars such as those offered by PROWEB and other organizations in industries of interest as a way of networking and exposing myself to the industry".

"One needs to envisage the future that they want and make strides to go for it and if things fail just re-strategize and see how best things can work out for you."

Be Unique

Let's jump right in with one of the most basic, but important points to note in branding. The brand is the identity of the business, and the most successful brands are the ones that are set apart from their competition. In simpler terms, your brand needs to be unique. Your business needs its own special identity for it to be able to appeal and form a connection with your customers. Inasmuch as your business exists in the same market space as your competition, what differentiates you from your competition is what will determine how much market share you will have.

The story behind

Inherently people like hearing things or acquiring information. Stories are practical collections of information. The story behind your brand is what enhances the likeability of your brand. Tell a story that captivates and inspires. Show how a strong and professional woman shatters glass ceilings in her industry by overcoming misconceptions and starting and running a business that continuously progresses, succeeds and empowers others.

Also, tell a story engrained in reality and the values of the business

A wellarticulated story helps the customer base not only connect with your business, but also believe in the values of the business.

The posts...

On social media, ALWAYS use quality graphics and photographs to describe the journey of the female leader/s and the organization as a whole to communicate the inclusiveness of the business. You must, as well, put effort into being consistent with well thought out posts Posting for the sake of posting will fail to garner meaningful interactions, and it can also put off potential customers.

Confidence...

Do not be flimsy or shaky about your brand and its values. These should be communicated with confidence Be clear and unequivocal about your support for inclusivity and women empowerment in your posts.

Social media tools and techniques...

Make use of the many helpful tools built into social media. Platforms such as Instagram allow you to run ads to reach a wider and more targeted audience at very little cost. On platforms such as Twitter, you have the ability to interact with your customer in a conversational and even feminine tone to show that you ' re a confident and inclusive women led business. However, always keep interactions professional and above board.

Gems by PROWEB June 2023

Branding elements

Do not shy away from using branding elements that speak to the femininity of the leadership Create a memorable and inspired logo that communicates the values of the business Have a colour palette that appeals to your target audience while highlighting what your business is about. Also, choose typography that indicates the ideas and the identity of the business.

Uniformity

Develop a brand manual so that you can maintain consistency across all your marketing platforms. The best brands have a uniformity to their marketing. Your logo and all other branding elements should be easily recognizable in all the formats that they are available in.

Target audience

Last, but definitely not least, know your target audience. Study and research their preferences and needs because it's the audience who, at the end of the day, get to choose whether or not they've been impressed by your brand In reality, this point takes precedence over most of the above points. This is because at the crux of it, branding is simply just branding. The brand needs to project the idea that a customer’s needs will be comprehensively met Whether it's a female or a male led business

It's not mainly about the individuals, but it's about the relationship between the business’s product and the end-user of the product/service. The individuals (leading women), of course, do bare significant influence on that relationship, hence these tips. The leading women and their stories get to be the beaming beacons of the brand This will, in turn, end up affecting product sales positively!

Conclusion...

To conclude, these branding tips will help any women led business to augment the relationship with its customers, communicate clearly and enhance its marketing As well, always remember, everything comes off better with a little confidence

COMBINING BUSINESS ACUMEN & PHILANTHROPY TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Top tier business leadership, philanthropy lessons & inspiration, for people everywhere.

Connie Mutunhu is a Zimbabwean tax expert who has made waves in the world of finance over the years. Growing up, her dream job was to be a teacher and also a nurse, the latter because “I wanted to get on a plane as the training was going to happen in England.”, she said laughing at herself.

For some reason however, when she finished school she got a job with the Government Tax Department, a role she describes as a major blessing to her life and career.

She credits this role and the institution for making her who she is today, “the government tax department made me who I am ” , she said in an interview with GEMS magazine.

At some point trainers from Australia were invited to come to Zimbabwe and she was part of the people who got the high-level taxation training which then resulted in her and one other colleague being selected to go for further training in the land down under.

Their unit was called the A’ Team and the excellence of that squad gave her a strong foundation, which has resulted in her being a much sought after tax expert in Zimbabwe and beyond.

After returning from Australia she worked at the tax department until she left for Ernst and Young, a multinational professional services partnership which is among the four biggest accounting firms in the whole world.

Gems by PROWEB June 2023

We also want to see a better Africa”, she said.

As for her future plans, the mother of two and grandmother said she will continue dedicating herself to Christian Ministry and making an impact via education. She is chairing the founding committee of the Seventh Day Adventist University in Chegutu which is currently under construction. She is also a mentor, a role which enables her to impart her knowledge and expertise to younger women.

MEN’S HEALTH AWARENESS

It is essential to pay attention to your health. Life is busy, but that should never be an excuse for not prioritizing your wellness. Staying in tune with your well-being promotes a stable lifestyle, reduces risk factors and lowers the chances of medical emergencies.

Whether you just found your doctor or already have one, visit them regularly. Getting an annual physical examination is the best way to prevent an illness before it occurs. Stop cancelling or postponing your doctor’s appointments. Things to ask your doctor about include Blood tests, Supplements, Blood pressure, Cholesterol levels, Alcohol consumption, Weight management and food choices. Always remember your health is a top priority, and visiting your doctor is a great preventive measure for men ’ s health.

The foods you eat directly fuel your body. Cutting back on fast foods, sugars and carbohydrates makes a difference when you replace them with fruits and vegetables. The best way to keep a healthy diet is to give yourself some variety daily. Eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fiber helps you avoid heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

A healthy diet can reduce high blood pressure and belly fat. Getting activity in your day prolongs your overall well-being. Making time for 30 minutes of physical activity during most days of the week increases men ’ s physical and mental health. Something as simple as an evening walk could be the lifestyle change you need. Sleeping between seven and nine hours each night keeps you in your best shape

Drinking caffeine instead of getting enough sleep leads to a toxic cycle that can deteriorate your health, so always give yourself time to rest. While adding positive changes like exercise and quality sleep to your lifestyle, you should consider current practices damaging your health. Smoking and vaping are the leading causes of preventable death. This practice can cause heart disease and cancer.

Alcohol and high-risk sexual behaviors can also harm your health

Excessive drinking may lead to cancer and heart issues. Depending on your age group, you should also screen for specific medical conditions with your doctor. For example, men in their 20s should screen for high cholesterol and testicular cancer. Older men in their 50s or above should look for those health concerns and additional ones like colon cancer, diabetes, heart disease and thyroid disease

As you focus on healthy habits, remember to prioritize enjoyment by doing something for yourself daily. These activities could include listening to an audiobook, doing yoga or meditating. When you do these things every day, you can experience better mental health and improve recovery from substance use disorders.

Gems by PROWEB June 2023

You should always stay ready for sex A lack of erection often points to underlying health issues. When you notice problems getting or keeping an erection more than 25% of the time, you should take note. This symptom may point to emotional problems, diseases or other physical causes like overconsumption of alcohol. Unsafe sexual behaviors like unprotected sex and multiple sexual partners can increase the chances of sexually transmitted infections.

If you have a family history of mental illness, alcohol abuse or suicide, speaking to your doctor about warning signs and symptoms is essential. A positive outlook on your life comes from wellness inside and out. Asking for help when needed is the first step toward improving mental health

Keeping extra weight off reduces your risk of heart attack, heart disease, cardiovascular disease or stroke. By exercising regularly and sticking to portion recommendations, your heart has to work less during the day and while you sleep.

You can use body mass index and waist circumference to estimate your weight status.

The prostate gland grows as you age, leading to urinary symptoms like passing more urine throughout the day or having less urine flow When you experience these issues, talk to your doctor about lifestyle changes like urinating when you get the urge, drinking fluids steadily throughout the day and exercising regularly.

As Hilltop Family Clinic, we want you to establish and trust us a your doctor. Your doctor is the key to a healthier life. Over time, we will know your lifestyle as well as you do. We want you to learn from us during routine visits, and be sure to make any necessary changes if applicable.

We want you to be free to discuss symptoms with us rather than ignoring them. A proper diagnosis can promote a healthier life even with a health condition. No matter your age, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle with your eating, sleeping and exercise habits. These habits may look different depending on your age. Men in their 50s or above should focus more on low-impact exercise, while younger men can focus more on strength training.
