Founded by Provost William A. "Bud" Baeslack III and East Cleveland City Schools Superintendent Dr. Myrna Loy Patton Corley in 2013, The Provost Scholars Program is a partnership between Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), East Cleveland City Schools (ECCS). In the fall of 2021, Ginn Academy in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) joined the partnership.

The program matches middle and high school students (grades 8-12) with CWRU faculty and staff Mentors and student tutors to improve students’ academic and career outcomes.

The Provost Scholars is an educational enrichment program dedicated to supporting the Provost Scholars by furthering and strengthening their academic and career goals.

We realize these goals by supporting the Provost Scholars in expanding their creative, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities. The program is designed to strengthen study practices, improve interpersonal proficiencies, and explore educational and career pathways through mentoring, tutoring, seminars, and relationship building with Case Western Reserve University faculty, staff, and student volunteers.

THE MYRNA LOY PATTON CORLEY RESEARCH & INNOVATION INITIATIVE Continuing and building on a summative project named for one of the founders of the Provost Scholars Program, this academic year marked the transition from the Critical Thinking and Essay Contest to the Research and Innovation Initiative.

Inspired by the weekly Intensive University Seminars which take place every Thursday after tutoring from 4:00 - 5:00 pm, the Provost Scholars collectively determine topics they wish to delve into more deeply.

Engaging in a variety of activities such as photography, interviewing, writing, and critiquing peer-reviewed publications, the Scholars then work closely with the CWRU Writing Resource Center & their Mentors to explore these topics.

APPRECIATION & RECOGNITION Provost Scholars Program Tutors The Provost Scholars Tutors are a critical component of the program as they assist the Provost Scholars in reaching their academic and career goals, particularly in mathematics, science, reading, critical thinking, study skills, test preparation, and writing.

Provost Scholars Tutors are comprised of incredibly generous and gifted undergraduate and graduate student volunteers from across a multitude of academic fields at Case Western Reserve University.

Tutoring sessions take place on Thursdays from 2:30‐ 3:50 pm at Guilford House during the academic year. Some tutors have also devoted additional time to the Provost Scholars by being available for extra hours outside of programming through our GoSchoolBox learning platform.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful CWRU students who have taken time away from their own activities to support and encourage the Provost Scholars.

APPRECIATION & RECOGNITION Provost Scholars Program Mentors The Provost Scholars Program Mentors are Case Western Reserve University faculty and staff who volunteer every Tuesday afternoon from 2:30 - 5:00 pm to support the Provost Scholars.

The Mentors often serve as role models who are also committed, thoughtful, and trusted friends.

They also serve as academic and career advisors who help the Scholars make significant contributions to their families, their communities, and to the global society.

Mentors traditionally assume multiple duties, including tutoring, networking, presenting workshops, and supporting social-emotional learning. The Provost Scholars, through working with their Mentors, will have opportunities to enhance their academic and professional skills.

APPRECIATION & RECOGNITION The Parents' College at Case The Parents' College is an opportunity for parents to participate in the program and hear lectures from prominent leaders and experts, several of whom are also program Mentors.

These seminars are also designed to provide additional information and first-hand experience for parents so they can continue to advise, direct and support their Provost Scholars.

The Parents' College is held the fourth Saturday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Guilford House on the Case Western Reserve University campus.
