COUNTDOWN ON UNTIL BIRTH OF NEW PRIVATE MATERNITY WARD The Gold Coast’s newest private maternity ward is now in its third trimester and expectant mothers are booking in to be the first to take advantage of the new facility at the Gold Coast Private Hospital when it opens in March.

T

he Gold Coast Private, which will become the new facility for Allamanda when it relocates on March 12, 2016 will be co-located with the Gold Coast University Hospital and form a major component of the Health and Knowledge Precinct. Gold Coast Private general manager David Harper said the new Healthscopeoperated hospital would be world-class, heralding a new style and standard in maternity care for the city. “Our new maternity ward’s gestation period has been much longer than the standard nine months, but its arrival is being greeted with the same level of anticipation and excitement that all expectant parents experience,” he said. “It has certainly been a labour of love in its planning and construction phase and now the excitement is building as we edge closer to introducing the Gold Coast to its new, state-of-the-art maternity ward.” Mr Harper said mother’s wanting to delivery their baby at the brand new facility should let their GPs know now. “Since we reached the nine month countdown there has been a wave of interest and many excited parents-tobe have already put their name down to be some of the first to give birth at the new hospital,” he said. Gold Coast Private Maternity will feature 25 private antenatal and postnatal rooms with ensuites, recliners and either a double bed or sofa bed for support persons wishing to stay overnight. It will have five birth suites fitted with state-of-the-art technology, including K2 fetal monitoring systems,

and a variety of resources for childbirth including a bath for water immersion, birth balls, mats and stools. Mothers’ will have access to an ‘ondemand’ menu for snacks and parents will be treated to a celebratory, threecourse dinner designed by executive chef John O’Shea who has spent 20 years in kitchens of five-star resorts. The a la carte menu will include smoked salmon tartare with avocado mouse, confit duck with pommes puree, and lemon meringue cheesecake with chocolate soil and sugar coated petals. The facility will have a special care nursery with nine cots that can care for premature babies 32 weeks over with 24 hour access for mothers and a team of highly specialised nursing staff and paediatric support. The ward will also have a lounge area, kitchenette and a dedicated area for baby bathing and education. Mr Harper said the Gold Coast Private was equipped to take care of expectant mothers and their families throughout their entire life cycle. “While every mother hopes she will

never need it, having the peace of mind that your baby and your family can be cared for in the event of unforseen circumstances is essential,” he said. The Gold Coast Private will open with 284 beds and will ultimately expand to 400 beds inline with demand. Healthscope has predicted that the hospital will have in excess of 28,000 admissions in its first year, and is expected to perform more than 15,000 operations. The Gold Coast Private will include 11 integrated operating theatres, 12 ICU beds, a hybrid theatre and cardiac catheterisation laboratory with expansion space to increase to 21 operating theatres. It will also have paediatrics, maternity and a special care nursery as well as oncology, rehabilitation and a 24 hour emergency care centre. Allamanda Private Hospital will move its staff and services to the Gold Coast Private Hospital when it opens in 2016, ceasing all operations and closing its existing facility in Spendelove Street, Southport.

From the

Editor Another year has flown past, bringing with it all of the joys of summer. The days are longer, hemlines are shorter, morning coffees have been swapped for the iced variety and I have an overwhelming urge to feel the sand between my toes. Our cover this issue feels like we have captured a sense of this summertime joy. As soon as we saw the image of Julianne Moore we knew she had to be our cover. Our love for her has grown over the years. We were truly inspired and awed by her Still Alice performance and now we eagerly await her new release Freeheld. “[There’s] a moment in the film that you will never forget and it’s additional proof that when it comes to love we’re all equal,” says our cover star.

Photo by Oxana from Linza Photography Makeup by Celia Spain

In keeping with our summer obsession we have a very special treat with our Colours of Summer (page 46). As someone who continually leads a very monochrome lifestyle, it is wonderful to have a fresh take on colours and view all of the fabulous new items to help give your beauty regime and wardrobe a fresh kick. We also share a selection of delectable and easy to make summer BBQ favourites, so that now you can provide the perfect menu to show off all of your new summer trends! Switching our focus to a more serious note I am especially touched by our Final Thought feature (page 134). Here you can read about the facts and ongoing debate on Australia’s stance on medicinal cannabis. Lucy Haslam, United in Compassion Founder, who has been championing a push for medicinal cannabis since her late-son Dan was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer, believes that medicinal cannabis needs to be extended to those who are chronically ill, and shares some of her firsthand encounters of such cases. Not to be forgotten is our delightful Living Feature on Brisbane photographer Kara Rosenlund (page 98), who opens the door in her new book to the homes of Australians who live authentically Australian. “I wanted to create something that was reflective of the raw nature of shelters from coast to remote country,” says Kara.

WINNER! Sue Read – Provoke Reader

I wanted to write and tell you how much I enjoyed the October/ November issue of Provoke! Every page was full of things to nourish my senses, from the yummy recipes (which I’m working my way through) to amazing things to buy for my house, wonderful beauty tips to enhance the way I live my life (not to mention all the places I want to visit in the travel section), and you even helped me understand the difference between fixed and variable interest rates – I didn’t think I’d ever get my head around that!! I have to say that I really like the format of the magazine, it’s been edited really well. It’s responsibly written and the focus is definitely positive; it’s nurturing, encouraging and interesting – something that is missing is many publications today. It also has something to offer the reader, whereas many longer-running publications focus too much on advertisements and less on features. I don’t usually contact magazines, but I know Provoke is new and I really really enjoyed it, so well done and keep doing what you’re doing because it’s great. I’ve even given my copy to my friend so that she can enjoy it. Looking forward to the next Issue!

FIRST THOUGHT | Things We Love

The Ultimate in Indulgence

Top of the Christmas Gift List

If, like us, you daydream about luxuriating in your afternoon cuppa then dream no more – hello and where have you been all our life bath brew? Just dunk this super-sized tea bag in your tub and soak your troubles away. Our favourite is the Chai Bath Brew with sweet orange, cardamon, Australian clay, rosehip and black pepper. RRP: $15.95 + postage W: pagethirtythree.com

Top of our perfectsentimental-gift-list this Christmas is the understated and delicate jewellery range by Lat & Lo. The idea is that you choose your favourite Lat & Lo bracelet, necklace or ring, and then have it custom inscribed with the coordinates to your special place. We love the cufflink range too, the perfect gift for the hard-tobuy-for man. W: latandlo.com

ROCKIN’ HOMEWARES

Put a Lid on it! We’re the first to admit this ain’t exactly as pretty as crystal glassware, but it has certainly solved all of our outdoor wine problems. Have you ever tried fitting a wine glass into a camping chair? Are you sick of flicking bugs out of your glass at barbecues? The Travino spill-proof wine tumbler has the DNA of a reusable coffee cup, but holding much more precious cargo. RRP: $14.95 + postage W: travino.com.au

We didn’t think it was possible to make cheese more majestic than it already is, but then we found Rock Ribbons’ Pink Rose Quartz Serving Platter (RRP $300). Designed and made in Brisbane with gold liquid leaf edging, it’s a thing of beauty for serving things of beauty. W: rockribbonsecogifts.com

Brighten Up Women are often told that black makes them look thinner, but we at Provoke are of the opinion that wearing colour is the key to a Summer glow. That’s why we’re in love with Brisbane jewellery brand Ruby Olive. Since being gifted a Ruby Olive necklace, the entire range has become our colour crush for the season. W: rubyolive.com.au

JINGLE BEARDS!

Sweet Beets make the Best Treats! We’ve done it... we’ve found the mother of all raw, GF, DF, Vegan health cakes, and they’re right here in our very own Brisbane! The only downside is that it’s impossible to pick what we love most about Sweet Beets! Those magnificent swirls of nourishing colour, the sugar-free yet sweet texture, the luxury of being able to indulge without expanding your waistband… it’s the ultimate trifecta! Created with love and passion, dynamic sister duo Steph and Edwina Young have created quite a following with their magnificent cakes and slices, and it’s no surprise! Sweet Beets are simply heavenly! TIP: Want to try a slice for yourself? Head to the Red Hill or Jan Powers Markets (New Farm)! We recommend the slice! W: facebook.com/sweetbeets.au

It’s not a look they could rock all year round, but certainly one we recommend for the Christmas season. Beard Baubles are the must-have accessory for the hairy-faced man in your life. Alas, these Baubles sold out within a week, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting crafty and creating your own beard adornments. All proceeds from the sale of Beard Baubles went to Beard Season, an Australian charity whose goal is to raise awareness of melanoma. W: beardbaubles.org

The Words You Want to Send Let’s face it, the last time time anyone got a Christmas card that they actually wanted to display was... never. Caloundra Mum Danielle Miles’ witty, pun-tastic and delightfully adorable cards are frame-worthy. Her Joey Design Illustrations are anything but cheesy, except when they want to be, and the greetings are a hoot. Danielle confessed to us that when she was younger she used to steal her Grandma’s shopping list jotters to practise drawing. We’re glad she did. RRP: $4.00 + postage W: joeydesign.etsy.com

The Amazing health benefits of Acai Berries Did you know that this deep-purple Amazonian fruit is one of the most antioxidant-rich berries available? With their excellent concentration of iron, calcium, fibre and Vitamin A, and low sugar levels, this exotic relative of the blueberry and cranberry is great for boosting energy. Acai Berries also have a low glycaemic load – which helps to regulate blood sugar levels – and high levels of anthocyanins – a plantbased antioxidant that aids in lowering cholesterol levels.

TIP: Try adding some Acai Berry powder to your morning smoothie, or treating yourself to an Acai Bowl. One of our favourites is the amazing Acai Mint Bowl from Press’d on Commercial Rd, Teneriffe. Simply delicious!

When being healthy turns into an obsession... Most people think that living a raw, organic, gluten-free, paleo or vegan lifestyle would make you the healthiest person around, but what happens when your health obsession goes too far? In a recent article by the UK Independent, it was revealed that our cultural obsessions with health trends are having serious impacts on our health, with many battling a disorder known as Orthorexia Nervosa. The term, which was originally coined by Dr Steven Bratman in 1997, is characterised by a heath fixation to the point where a person experiences extreme mental distress when faced with self-identified ‘bad’ or ‘unsafe’ foods. While there is nothing wrong with a healthy lifestyle, the problem becomes evident when it goes from cutting down on a certain food or food group, to living a diet so restrictive that they become malnourished. Like anything, moderation is the key to a balanced lifestyle, so be sure to eat for health as well as enjoyment.

Tell us about Little Fox Lane and how it came to be. We always loved the idea of combining coffee and home decor, but [for a long time] opening a shop was always just a dream. Sometimes you have to take a chance.

WHERE GREENS AND COFFEE BEANS MEET It’s not just a café, and it’s not just a gift shop; it’s Little Fox Lane! Simply put, the Aspley business combines the most beautiful things in life; creamy coffees, nourishing coldpressed juices, succulent plants and cute homewares. Owned and brought to life by Brisbane mother Lisa, and her two daughters, Sara and Emma, Little Fox Lane would have to be one of the most interesting jaunts I’ve come across in Brisbane. W: facebook.com/LittleFoxLaneShop

What was the inspiration behind Little Fox Lane? Our inspiration came from our love of home decor – we are always on the lookout for exciting decor stores, and we try to source homewares that are unique and hard to come by. Little Fox Lane was influenced from our favourite brick and mortar shops as well as online stores. We also loved the idea of having our own coffee shop, so we thought it would make us unique to blend them together. We want our customers to be able to sit and enjoy a beverage or light snack from our menu in a homely environment. What is your favourite from the menu? I don’t have a favourite, but at the moment, an Iced coffee goes down well in these warmer days. What’s the most exciting thing about owning your own business, and when did you first realise you wanted to create Little Fox Lane? I think the most exciting thing is watching the business evolve and meeting new people along the way.

CHICKEN SKEWERS WITH PEANUT SAUCE Satay skewer recipes usually call for the skewers to be soaked before you thread the raw chicken onto them. If you tend to burn them, a good method is to cook the chicken and put a skewer through it once it’s cooked. No soaking, no burning, and just as good to eat. SERVES 4: AS AN ENTRÉE

2 tablespoons peanut oil

PREP TIME: 20 MINUTES

1 teaspoon ground turmeric

COOKING TIME: 10–15 MINUTES

¼ teaspoon ground dried chilli

INGREDIENTS

270 ml tin coconut cream

¼ bunch coriander

½ cup crunchy peanut butter

1 brown onion

1 tablespoon fish sauce

2 garlic cloves

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 long red chilli, seeded

2 × 200 g chicken breast fillets, sliced across the grain 5 mm thick

Zest and juice of 1 lime 1 Wash the roots and stems of the coriander, reserving the leaves, and place them in a food processor along with the onion, garlic, chilli and lime zest. Process until very fine. 2 Heat half the oil in a large non-stick frypan over a medium heat. Add the onion mixture and fry until soft and fragrant. Add the turmeric and ground chilli and stir for a further minute. 3 Add half the coconut cream and the peanut butter and bring to a simmer. Simmer for five minutes. The sauce will split – this is OK.

5 Heat a barbecue grill or a grill plate on the stove to a high heat. Toss the chicken pieces through the remaining oil and place them on the grill. Allow to cook without moving or turning them for about two minutes. Turn and cook for a further minute on the second side. You should have lovely char marks on the chicken. Remove to a plate and push a bamboo skewer lengthways through each piece. Let them rest under foil. When it is time to serve the skewers, gently heat the sauce. Pour over the skewers and scatter with coriander leaves.

4 Turn the heat to low and add the fish sauce, brown sugar and half the lime juice. Taste to see if the sauce needs any more of these three things. This is very dependent on personal taste. Stir in the rest of the coconut cream, taste again and adjust the seasoning if need be. Remove from the heat.

ROASTED BEETROOT, ROCKET AND WALNUT SALAD When beetroots are in season, this is a very popular salad choice, but it can be enjoyed throughout any season. Goat’s cheese is a nice substitute for the Persian feta, if you like. SERVES 4–6: AS A SIDE DISH

INGREDIENTS

PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES

6 small beetroots, scrubbed and cut into 1/4

COOKING TIME: 45 MINUTES

4 small red onions, bases intact, peeled and cut into quarters 2 tablespoons olive oil

DRESSING

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves,

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

roughly chopped

Zest and juice of ½ orange

2/3 cup walnut pieces

¼ cup olive oil

120 g baby rocket

¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

100 g Persian feta, crumbled

½ teaspoon sea salt flakes

3 shallots, finely sliced on the diagonal

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a large baking tray with baking paper. Place the beetroots and onions in a bowl with the olive oil and thyme leaves and toss to coat, then transfer them to the baking tray. Roast for about 45 minutes or until the beetroot is tender and the onion has collapsed. In the last 10 minutes, scatter the walnuts on the tray to toast. Remove the tray from the oven and set aside to cool. 2 To make the dressing, combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to combine. 3 Just before serving, assemble the salad. Arrange the rocket on a serving platter and drizzle with a little dressing. Place the beetroot, onion, walnuts, feta and shallots on top and pour over the rest of the dressing.

ROAST PORK RIBS WITH BARBECUE GLAZE Roll your sleeves up and keep the paper towel handy. Things are going to get messy with these sticky, glorious ribs.

SERVES 4 PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 2 HOURS INGREDIENTS 2 kg pork ribs (American-style rib racks) 2 teaspoons olive oil 2 tablespoons smoked paprika 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 2 brown onions, finely diced 3 garlic cloves, chopped 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 cup malt vinegar 1 tablespoon hot English mustard 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 cup maple syrup

1 Preheat the oven to 160°C. 2 Place the ribs in a single layer on two baking trays. Drizzle with half the olive oil, then sprinkle with half the paprika and all of the salt and pepper. Cover tightly with foil and roast in the oven for 1½ hours. 3 To make the barbecue glaze, heat the remaining teaspoon of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Sauté the onion and garlic until soft and fragrant. Add the remaining tablespoon of paprika and sauté for a further minute. Add the tomato paste and sauté for one minute more. Add the vinegar, mustard, soy sauce and maple syrup and stir to mix well. Bring to the boil, then boil for about 10 minutes until it reaches a syrupy consistency. Watch the pot to make sure it does not boil over. Turn off and set aside while the ribs cook.

Images and Recipes from Homemade Takeaway by Julie Goodwin ($39.99), published by Hachette Australia.

4 Remove the baking dishes from the oven and take the foil off. Using tongs to handle the racks, run a knife between each bone to separate the individual ribs. Increase the heat to 180°C and spoon a generous amount of the glaze over the ribs. Cook for a further 15 minutes, basting with marinade every few minutes. The ribs will be falling-apart tender and have a lovely thick, sticky glaze. Pictured with spiced corn on the cob Summer 2015/16 27

BERRY TARTLETS WITH A CACAO BASE & CASHEW CREAM FILLING This dessert closely resembles a traditional French custard tart, apart from the chocolate crust. The custard is more delicate in flavour and softer in texture than other creams, and works best in individual servings, so the tart doesn’t need to be cut into slices. Top it with your choice of seasonal fruits; berries and cherries work exceptionally well with chocolate and custard cream.

INGREDIENTS

TOPPING

120 g (4¼ oz/1 cup) dried activated

440 g (15½ oz/2 cups) fresh berries or

almonds

cherries, pitted and cut in halves

80 g (2¾ oz/½ cup) cashews 210 g (7½ oz/1¼ cups) pitted dates 2 tbsp cacao nibs ¼ tsp vanilla-bean powder or vanilla extract 3 tbsp cacao powder 1 tbsp melted cacao butter vanilla custard cream 235 g (8½ oz/1½ cups) cashews (soak 2 hours) 250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) almond milk ¼ cup sweetener (organic maple syrup, raw agave, coconut crystals, raw honey) or dates 1 tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp vanilla-bean powder or seeds of 1 vanilla bean pinch salt 80 ml (2½ fl oz/¹⁄³ cup) melted, coldpressed coconut oil optional – ¼ tsp lecithin

To prepare the base: In a food processor, blend nuts until almost couscous-like – leave them with a bit of texture. Add the dates and blend until well combined and until the mixture is slightly sticky. Add the remaining ingredients and pulse a few times until combined. The mixture should hold together well. Line 6, 10 cm (4 in) French fluted tart (flan) tins with plastic wrap. Press the mixture firmly into each tart tin – it will need to be approximately 3–4 mm (1/8–3/16 in) thick on the bottom and up the sides of the tins to maintain the structure.

Recipe and Images from The Unbakery by Megan May (Murdoch Books).

Place the tart base in the refrigerator while you make the filling. To prepare the cream filling: Drain the soaked cashews and rinse thoroughly. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender except the coconut oil – process until very smooth. Slowly add the oil into the blender while the motor is running until well combined. Pour the filling between the six tarts and top with fresh berries or cherries.

SURVIVING THE FESTIVE SEASON ’Tis the season to be jolly, and there is no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy the festivities and still fit into your skinny jeans! All it takes is a little bit of planning and you’re on your way to a guilt-free Christmas and New Year. WORDS: MAYA BROSNAN NUTRITIONIST, IRIDOLOGIST, FITNESS PROFESSIONAL AND YOGI.

D

oes shedding a couple of kilos before Christmas and the New Year sound unrealistic? Does keeping them off sound even more preposterous? Not if you follow my Keep It Simple (KIS) guidelines. Yes, it is possible to enjoy a social life this festive season while keeping yourself healthy and fit. Clean up your own Environment – Eat ‘Clean’ at Home: Although Christmas and New Year’s parties and festive catchups mostly take place outside of your residence, your home is the best place to start your survival routine. When you think about it, even if you are attending a few pre-Christmas and New Year functions, you will still be consuming more meals at home than out. The earlier you start cleaning up your eating environment the better. You can expect to be feeling more energised only a few days into your new ‘clean eating’ routine. You may even notice your clothes getting looser as you may shed a couple of kilos before the chubby man in the red suit drops off a few pressies. Here are some handy KIS tips to help you set up a healthy home environment: Your KIS Guidelines for at home: • Eliminate all processed and refined foods. These include any sugary treats like lollies, chocolate, ice cream, white-flour products such as white bread (it creates the same pancreatic insulin response as sugar!), biscuits, bakery goods, and also soft drink and juice.

Replace refined foods with wholesome foods. Go for: 1. Foods that come from the ground like vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, If your family won’t wholesome grains, cooperate, place all beans and legumes. unhealthy food items 2. Foods that have in dark containers and a mother like store them in the pantry (preferably organic or deep in the fridge free range) meat, – out of sight, out of chicken, eggs, fish. mind!

3. Foods that haven’t been ‘messed with’ – As a general rule, if your grandmother would not recognise an ingredient on the back of a packet – stay away from it.

How to KIS in Public: Making more conscious food and beverage choices while out will assist you in avoiding not only weight gain, but also that ‘food hangover’ the next day. Here are a few tips that can help while you are out celebrating: • Don’t skip any meals before your function. If you are not sure which type of food will be served, eat a full meal before so that you don’t fill up on all of the wrong types of foods. • Enjoy more protein-based finger foods if available (fish cakes, chicken skewers, meatballs), as they will fill you up more than carbohydrate-based snacks. Avoid fried foods and pastries. • Drink a full glass of water between alcoholic beverages to keep hydration levels up and avoid a hangover. Ideally, avoid having more than five standard drinks per week. • If celebrating at a restaurant, make your meal selection before consuming any alcohol, as it may affect your choice, and order no more than two courses. • It is OK to have dessert, as long as you eat healthily at home and generally avoid sugar.

Your KIS Guidelines for entertaining: If you plan on entertaining this festive season, there is one simple rule you need to follow – Healthify, Healthify, Healthify! Entertaining guests, whether for a pre-Christmas party, New Year’s Eve or on Christmas Day, is the perfect opportunity for you to make healthier food choices for yourself and your jolly guests. With every food selection you make (finger food or main meal), you have the very special opportunity of healthifying – replacing high-energy, calorie-rich, nutrient-poor ingredients for more wholesome ones or opting for ‘cleaner’ foods following the guidelines mentioned earlier. Here are a few ideas: • Use vegetables sticks instead of refined biscuits or crackers for dips. • Serve healthy dips instead of rich, fatty cheeses. Some suggestions include hummus, guacamole or beetroot and tahini dip. Adding tuna or eggs to some dips will increase the satiety factor for you and your guests. • Chicken skewers or prawn skewers are always a popular finger-food selection Deflect the demons! when entertaining as well. POMMERY: FROM CHALK-PITS TO CHAMPION This French Champagne House can boast its foundation by one of the world’s first female entrepreneurs and pioneers. WORDS: JENI BONE & PHOTOGRAPHY: LEIF CARLSSON

F

resh from being declared the 2014 World Champion Non Vintage en Bottle & en Magnum by leading global Champagne critic Tom Stevenson at the ‘Oscars’ of champagne, Pommery is now available in Queensland. With its distinctive and distinguished royal blue livery, Pommery has a rich and chequered history, made nobler by its triumph over adversity. The house was founded in Reims, France as Pommery & Greno in 1836 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno, originally as a wool

trader. Upon her husband’s death in 1858, Louise Pommery, looking to put her fortune to good use, devoted the Pommery marque to Champagne and turned the wine industry and social mores on their head. Madame Pommery was a true trailblazer and to her we can trace the fundamentals of luxury product promotion: style, brand, communication and public relations. She designed the image of the brand and established one of the first known company sponsorships and brand associations with contemporary art. She oversaw what was at the time “the biggest building site of the

32 PROVOKE.COM.AU

21/12/2015 7:55 pm

century in Reims”, the metamorphosis of the local chalk-pits into cellars. Belgian and French miners were called on to dig out 18 kilometres of interconnected rib or barrel vault galleries – tantamount to a vast underground town. Within its squares formed by the old wells, sculptor Gustave Navlet created huge basreliefs that remain to this day – the start of a tradition of exhibitions in these eerie and atmospheric caverns where contemporary artists are chosen for shows each season. In the dimness of the Pommery chalk-pits emerged the House’s most notable achievement: Pommery Nature 1874, the first brut in the history of Champagne, which spurred the brand’s international acclaim. Until that time, the Champagne wines had high levels of sugar and alcohol, regarded as necessary to reduce the acidity. From her travels to England, Madame Pommery observed that the taste of English high society was turning towards lighter and less sweet wines. She sought to adapt to the new taste of her market, which involved changes such as delaying the harvest dates to ensure grapes ripened sufficiently, a risk to exposure to frost, and increasing the range of wines to obtain a balance of blends. It was a highly risky financial venture for a boutique producer, but Madame Pommery’s foresight and perseverance paid off. The distinctive lightness of Pommery Nature was a hit in England and other markets, establishing the fame, success and reputation for innovation of the House of Pommery. An astute businesswoman with indomitable entrepreneurial spirit Madame Pommery certainly was, but her sense of social justice too was admirable. She established the first pension fund and social security for her workforce, as well as constructing the orphanage and nursery fund in Reims, for it was her belief that through work one could achieve “saintly things”. Thanks to the talents and vision of Madame Pommery and her advisers, Henry Vasnier and Adolphe Hubinet, the Pommery brand attained international recognition by the late 1800s. By 1907, Madame Pommery’s grandson was at the helm of the company, working to increase its international profile and social aims. When the Great War struck in 1915, 90 per cent of Reims was destroyed. During three years of hell and suffering, the local people took refuge in the Pommery chalk-pits and, no doubt, owe their lives to their depths. In 1917 the family was determined to salvage Pommery from the ruins and

grapes were harvested amid the rubble. A touching, understated mention of this is visible on that vintage: “Pommery 1917. Wine harvested 1,200 metres from enemy lines.” The estate was rebuilt and flourished to its pre-war stature. By 1979 the family ceased running the company, although remained active with its expertise in grapes. Prince Alain de Polignac, cellarmaster, became the keeper of the company’s history and travelled the world to introduce people to Pommery. Today, Paul-François Vranken steers the fate of Pommery with the same spirit and ideals as Madame Pommery: a generous nature and fierce drive, inventive and joyous. The Pommery estate is 50 hectares,

25 of which are vines, the rest buildings and gardens that attract tourists and historians of art, architecture and culture with their Elizabethan neo-Gothic opulence. Unlike many other vignerons, the Pommery enclave is not barricaded by high walls and wooden gates, instead fenced with rails to entice and offer the warm welcome that sparkling wine connotes. For after all, (with apologies to American novelist Roman Payne) Champagne reminds us that life’s bounty is not always fleeting, but can be captured, enjoyed and, best of all, shared. Pommery is represented in Queensland by Global Wine and Food. W: globalfw.com.au

SPRING INTO SUMMER WITH BOUNCE FIT! The low impact, high intensity workout so fun it doesn’t even feel like work! Pure Bounce is here to keep you in shape over the summer season! WORDS & IMAGES: JAS RAWLINSON

A

s Summer announces its presence with that typical Queensland humidity, lazy beach days are high on my priority; filled colourful bikinis, salt on my skin and a cider in hand. Of course, I also want to keep in shape during the festive season, so I began to wonder: what’s the best way to workout during the sweltering summer months? For me personally, I’m quite choosy with what kind of exercise I do; I want a workout that is nourishing to my entire body – something that lengthens, tones, motivates and, most importantly, is fun! I also tend to stay

away from gyms, as my body responds best to low-impact exercise, so when I came across Pure Health’s Bounce classes I had a good feeling I’d found the perfect workout combination! What is a Bounce class, you ask? Essentially, it’s a high-intensity, low-impact choreographed class – much like an aerobic workout – that’s performed on a rebounder trampoline. Providing 80% less shock absorption to your joints, it’s been found to be 68% more efficient than running (according to studies from NASA), making it the perfect solution for those with sensitive areas or old/ prolonged injuries! In fact, the class

was originally designed with this in mind, when Pure Health’s founder, Marina, found herself longing for a workout that wouldn’t put extra strain on her injured knee. Deciding to bite the bullet, I headed along to Pure Health to try the workout myself. I must admit I did have a lot of concerns as I walked into the class, mostly about how much impact it would have on my joints (which are quite sensitive)... and also about the high risk of me falling on my face. Oh yes, I was fully prepared to be the ‘unco duckling’ in the room, and I made sure to set my mini tramp at the very back of the

34 PROVOKE.COM.AU

room, away from expert bouncers, closest to the door. Taking a step on to the rebounder and looking down at the springs, all sort of visions filled my mind of catapulting off the trampoline and taking out a room full of fierce fitness queens. But then something amazing happened...the music started, I found my rhythm (mostly) and before I knew it we were 30 minutes into the class! Working out to Lauren’s personalised playlist – filled with dance jams, pop hits and classic ’90s/’00s favourites such as “Backstreet’s Back”, and Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You” – we bounced, kicked, sprinted on the spot and pumped our arms in time to the beat; sweating and smiling through the burn. After around 40 minutes it was time for a quick stretch before finishing off with some squats, abwork and a final cool-down. Around me were women of varying ages and body types, and everyone was free to work as hard or moderately as they liked; that’s the thing about Pure Health, they encourage you where you are at, and it’s an overwhelmingly positive environment open to all! The instructor, Lauren Holloway, who teaches across all three studios, was not only extremely knowledgeable,

but also friendly, and eager to make sure everyone has fun. It’s something that Lauren believes is central to what makes their studio so special. “I have been working at Pure for over three years and I love teaching classes here more and more every day! The Bounce classes are a full-body workout – not to mention they’re really fun,” she said. “You totally get lost in the movements and music, and don’t even realise how hard you are working; it’s by far my favourite class to choreograph and teach!” One thing I loved about Pure Health is that they are like a tight-knit community, and this becomes more than evident in the time it takes me to have a quick chat to Lauren; several women popping their heads in the door to say hello. Everyone you see has a smile on their face. With over 240 classes per week across three studios, Pure Health is the ‘gym with benefits’ that we all need! Head to purehealth.com.au to find out more!

TIP:

If you love the sound of a Bounce class but just want the high-intensity blitz without the choreography, try ‘Pure Bounce Hiit’ (suitable for experienced bouncers, level 2 & 3).

Trampoline workouts: Health Benefits

• Melts away fat; • Reduces strain on knees and joints; • Improves balance; • Cleanses lymphatic system and boosts immunity; • Develops muscular strength and endurance; • Improved lung and cardiovascular efficiency; and • Detoxifies body.

5 MINUTES WITH LAUREN HOLLOWAY What do you love most about the Pure Bounce classes? I love that Pure Bounce is a workout that is unique, fun and energetic – you totally get lost in the movements and music and don’t even realise how hard you are working! It’s by far my favourite class to choreograph and teach! What makes Pure Health’s Bounce classes unique compared to others? Pure Bounce is unique as it offers clients a high-intensity cardio workout without the impact. It’s a full-body workout, toning legs and glutes, working the upper body and – of course – the abdominals. Not to mention it’s FUN! Unlike many studios, you’ve got your own personalised playlist for the Bounce classes – which song really pumps you up? That’s a tough question – so hard to choose just one track! I love to use a range of music in classes – I think the right music makes all the difference to the energy in a class. I’d have to say one of my fave pump-up tracks is

“Watch out for this (Bumaye)” by Major Lazer feat. Busy Signal. I love to speed the tempo right up!

How did you find out about Pure Health, and what do you love most about working there? I originally came to Pure with a friend many years ago to try a class. I was instantly blown away by the innovative classes – they were so unique and the range was so extensive. There are so many reasons I love working here! I love the way Pure approaches exercise (we believe physical activity is the baseline for ensuring a healthy body and mind); we believe in mindful movement and making exercise enjoyable. Pure is a club where everyone is welcome – all ages, all fitness levels – and we strive to make it an environment you want to spend time in. Going to the gym should not be a chore! As an instructor there is something so special and rewarding about motivating members to achieve their health and fitness goals and to help them to experience the enjoyment of exercise.

TAKE BACK THE POWER!

K

Sometimes you find yourself watching martial arts videos on Youtube and thinking, “I wish I could pull off some moves like that!” But all fancy tricks aside, learning even the most basic of self-defence moves can be easier than you think!

rav Maga –translated meaning contact combat – is an Israeli-based form of self-defence and physical training, aiming to teach users how to detect, and respond to, dangerous situations. Originally developed by the Israeli Army in the 1940s, Krav Maga has been recognised as one of the most effective selfdefence training systems in the world – regardless of age, race or gender. As the Director and Chief Instructor for the Krav Maga Training Academy, Brisbane’s Tim Alexander has been training and running private classes, workshops and group sessions consistently since 2005, and is one of only a handful of people worldwide to hold an Expert Level Three rank in Krav Maga. Tim is passionate about equipping men, women and children with the tools to protect themselves. He is also the Australian Coordinator for the revolutionary “Stay Away!’’ women’s workshops, as developed by the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF). “Stay Away!” is a mixture of simple self-defence moves, everyday knowledge, and of course, fun! Just one class will teach you “exactly when, where and how to instantly defeat 80% of problems a woman will ever face!” Here, four Brisbane women share how the IKMF’s “Stay Away!” classes changed their lives, what to expect, and why you should consider trying a class. Adell, 40 – Brisbane After experiencing the anxiety and fear of a home intruder, Adell found herself on edge and unable to cope. For her, taking part in the Stay Away classes not only rebuilt her confidence, but also equipped her to deal with the intruder when he returned several months later. A work colleague who had previously attended a Stay Away workshop suggested it to me as part of a management plan after the intrusion. I guess I was expecting a Boot Camp set-up with a Drill Sergeant and some punching bags, but it was nothing like that! It was informative, friendly, practical for all levels of fitness, ages, shapes and sizes (which was handy as I also had a broken foot at the time) and provided instant take-away skills and

knowledge. To me, the most important take-away message was that every single woman has a very true and very real innate warning system that tells us when something is off. The key is listening to it and knowing you have the ability to act. I started feeling and seeing benefits immediately. The night of the class I slept for about 15 hours; it was wonderful, I hadn’t slept properly in over two months! I stopped jumping at every little noise around my house, started walking taller and spoke more confidently. The positive impacts of this

workshop have reached far beyond my expectations. In my case the intruder returned a few months later, and in the instant I knew he was back, I also knew I had the choice to take back the power – and I did. I’m so sure and confident in the content and learnings of this workshop being right for every woman that I now engage the Krav Maga Training Academy in Brisbane to facilitate workshops for all my work colleagues across Australia. Everyone is catered for – and we even have pregnant staff members kicking butt!

She hasn’t looked back! I began training with Tim around two years ago and really felt as though I’d hit the jackpot when I found Krav Maga and saw what it had to offer! Being a petite girl, I thought learning self-defence would be convenient in theory, but wasn’t 100% convinced that anything I did would make a difference. [Since doing the course] I now have confidence in myself that I can walk taller and feel safer in almost any situation life might throw my way. I used to work in hospitality, and finishing in the early hours of the morning in the City and Valley can be daunting, even with something so simple as walking to my car. I definitely noticed a big difference in my stride after attending the workshop. To anybody hesitating in whether or not to attend the class, I say fight through that fear and do it! The instructors, the fellow members and attendees are nothing but genuine and friendly folk! I can’t recommend this workshop enough!

went into a lot more detail than I was expecting and I found it very practical. The class affirms a lot of things that I think women feel in their gut - women’s intuition - and gives us permission to act on those intuitions by valuing them. Because I know Tim personally, I had to get over that barrier of: ‘this is someone I know, I wouldn’t want to do anything to hurt them’. That was really valuable to me, because [the reality is] a lot of the time when women are attacked, it’s by someone they know. I think that’s how women can get hoodwinked, by letting their guard down because they know the person, and thinking, ‘Oh they wouldn’t do anything to hurt me’. It’s really important to get women away from the thinking that we must be nice, we must be passive, we must avoid confrontation... Being told that our judgements are valuable, that we’re not just being silly, is really helpful. [If women are shy] I’d say definitely do it! I would have been possibly the oldest person to do the class, but it’s useful for all ages and all stages of fitness. It could really make the difference if you’re in a difficult situation, or trying to help someone else.

leaves no room for misunderstanding. Knowing you have some basic tools in your self-defence arsenal you can call on – if required – also makes you feel more confident in everyday situations; you walk taller and hold yourself differently, which is a great feeling. It also makes it clear to others that you will not be walked over. Learning how to channel my self-consciousness and feelings of intimidation and fear into righteous anger and power was also a hugely powerful experience. If you’re curious, I’d say bite the bullet and do it! The instructors I know are fantastic and create a very friendly and encouraging environment, while still challenging you to break out of your shell. I’ve also taken friends to workshops, and it’s great to see their self-confidence and ability blossom within the period of a few short hours! To try a class or learn more about Krav Maga, contact Tim Alexander via info@kmta.com.au or kmta.com.au

Peta, 33 – Brisbane (currently living in Uganda) After having been assaulted several times through her line of work, Peta decided to try one of the Stay Away classes. She now takes her friends along, and loves seeing how the workshop helps women to blossom! When it comes to communication, women have a tendency to be very ‘nice’ to people when turning them down, or declining an offer to go out, as I think we fear hurting their feelings. It was great to be reminded that not only is it OK to be firm and clear (verbally) in these situations, but also physically so. This is usually the best response as it

Sue, Brisbane Despite initially feeling a little nervous, the Brisbane mother soon found that the classes were simple, fun and extremely valuable for women of all ages. For Sue, learning how to identify uncomfortable situations and trust her gut intuition was extremely valuable. I suppose you’re always a little nervous with anything new, and something that involves an issue to do with violence and self-protection, but I [decided to do the class as I] thought it was a very important issue that all women should deal with. I was really impressed! It

WISHING YOU A VERY ACTIVE SUMMER Fitness guru Belinda Wasowski shows you how easy it is to keep fit and healthy no matter where your holidays take you. WORDS: BELINDA WASOWSKI, PERFORMANCE COACH

hether you’ve got a short break over Christmas holidays or you’re heading off on a month-long trip for the school holidays, there’s no reason you can’t keep fit and healthy. Given one of the most-used reasons people skip exercise is that they’re too busy, the Summer holidays provide an ideal opportunity to stay active or even begin a new routine! But before we get there, we need to make it through December.

There’s no doubt December can be a busy time for Christmas parties, shopping and longer work days in preparation for an upcoming holiday. But, keeping up your usual exercise will not only help reduce stress, it will help you get through the holidays with your routine intact (rather than in tatters). You can’t out-train a bad diet (or an over-indulgent Christmas), but by applying a few simple strategies you can minimise the damage of all that

pudding and cider. Want to know the easiest, cheapest and most accessible way? Use your body weight. In my opinion, body-weight exercises are underrated. By changing the tempo, the range of motion and the intensity of the exercises you can get a killer workout using nothing but... you! To mix things up, why not head to the nearest playground and make creative use of the equipment there. Jump online to check out more of Belinda’s Playground Workouts..

Burn Calories By Having Fun

Belinda’s Top Tips For Surviving the Christmas Countdown Start the day right – If you normally exercise at night, switch your exercise to the morning to avoid having to cancel due to social events or work pressures. Improvise – Have a few workouts up your sleeve that you enjoy doing and that can be done at home or in the park. Pull them out whenever it’s difficult to stick to your usual routine or when you can’t get to the gym. Be prepared – Book workouts into your diary and work around any social events or work functions you need to attend. At the beginning of each week, check what’s coming up and put in place strategies to ensure you can keep up with your training and enjoy the silly season.

Give the Gift of Fitness

If you shop around, you’ll get a few key pieces of equipment for workouts at home, in the park or at your holiday destination for under $100. My ideal workout kit under $100 is a medicine ball, kettlebell, skipping rope and resistance band.

Summer holidays are the perfect time to make the most of the great outdoors. While the emphasis is on having fun, you’ll also get a great full-body workout with the following family oriented activities: • Stand-up paddleboarding • Canoeing • Body surfing & Boogie boarding • Swimming • Frisbee • Beach volleyball • Backyard cricket • Handball • Horse riding • Scootering Just 30mins of throwing a Frisbee will burn around 110 calories, approximately the same as 30mins of body surfing. Hiking and beach volleyball will burn a good 250-300 calories in 30mins. My favourite water exercise is stand-up paddling, which burns around 430 calories in 30mins for a casual paddle. You’ll burn a lot more calories racing your partner, catching waves or where the current is stronger, as well as getting a great workout for your arms, legs and your core!

DIY TIPS FOR THE PERFECT WAVE “To create this polished ‘water wave look,’ start by blow-drying a modifying mousse into the hair and smooth through with a large paddle brush. Then, using The Wand by Cloud Nine, take vertical sections and wind the hair around the tong. Wind all the sections in the same direction and away from the face. Clip each section up as you go to let it cool with the maximum curl. When you’ve tonged the entire head, let all the sections out of the clips and gently brush into big, bouncy waves. Smooth a shine serum across your palms and smooth over the waves for a high-shine finish. Finish with a light spray of a flexible hairspray.” – Cloud Nine Ambassador Sarah Laidlaw ‘The Wand’ RRP: $315 W: au.cloudninehair.com

BEAUTY | Summer Colour

SIZZLE WITH COLOUR THIS SUMMER Colour Counsellor Jules Standish’s technicolour tips for looking and feeling brighter this summer. If you want to express your feminine side this Summer embrace pink, the colour of love, compassion and nurturing. Research shows that men love women in pink, as apparently it dates back to the stone age when men associated pink with flesh! Wearing pink shows you are a kind, generous person who likes to please others, that you are romantic and enjoy being creative, especially with all things beautiful. Emotionally, pink will help you release old habits, let go of sadness

and heartache and allow you to open up to being loved. Pink also has beneficial properties psychologically and has been used in experiments in prisons to calm down inmates and lessen aggression in as little as 15 minutes! Pink really came into fashion when pink ribbons became the symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness, empowering pink as a survival colour and chosen for its femininity and strength. To highlight the use of pink as a

feminist colour today, there is a 100 000 strong group of women in India called the Gulabi (pink) Gang. All of the women wear bright pink saris and wield bamboo sticks in pursuit of justice, as domestic and sexual violence are commonplace in their rural area. They have stood up for their rights amongst their families and villages and are now bringing about system changes through direct action and confrontation. A powerful collaboration of pink!

1 2

Pick Your Pink For pink-based, cool skin tones choose icy pastel shades and hot magenta, but if you have warm, golden-based skin tones then the coral and salmon pink tones will suit you best. Combining pink with greens and blues will balance this glorious colour or try wearing it with the neutrals of white, grey or navy for a smarter look.

BLUE Blue is officially the world’s favourite colour! We absorb colours through our skin and our eyes so therefore it’s no coincidence that looking at a beautiful blue sea or sky calms us down. This is because it releases the feel good hormone oxytocin. Blue is the best colour to wear if you are feeling anxious or stressed. As the colour of communication, wear blue at work or in any situation

where you will be interacting with others, making speeches, going for interviews or any form of mediation. Blue is a restful, cool colour and comes in many shades: turquoise, pale, cobalt, electric, navy, petrol, aquamarine, teal, azure, Prussian, indigo and royal. In 2000, an experiment was undertaken in Glasgow, Scotland where blue street lighting was installed in certain streets. These all reported fewer

crimes than other neighbourhoods. This would seem to indicate that blue does indeed have a calming influence at a subconscious level. Blue is also the colour of trust, loyalty, diplomacy and clarity and therefore it is used in many professions as a uniform, particularly in navy blue. Police, pilots, naval officers, and many in authority all wear this colour.

1

Blue for You

2

If you have a pale skin tone, then the cooler pastel blue shades and navy will look best on you. Warmer complexions look great in bright blues. Turquoise is THE best colour to wear with a suntan and suits ALL skin tones!

YELLOW This is the colour of joy, sunshine and mental creativity. It will help with all decision-making and give you clarity of mind. This is an uplifting colour that will not only brighten up your day, but everyone else’s around you too! Choose to combine yellow with purple as this balances and calms yellows

stimulating properties with purples soothing elements, or mix with navy blue to create a smart look, or grey for professionalism and good judgement. Physically, wearing yellow can help to support your nervous system and your muscles too, thereby increasing circulation. It is also a good colour to aid digestion which increases

gastric juices in the stomach, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Yellow has the ability to loosen any calcium deposits you may have built up over time in your system and so can aid all inflammatory conditions like rheumatism, arthritis and stiffness of the joints and back problems.

ORANGE In fashion, orange really comes alive in the summertime with all its glorious shades of brightness, peach, coral, apricot and salmon. In our modern world the colour orange is associated with joy, entertainment, fun and sociability, helping us to look on the bright side of things particularly in troubled times. In the words of the great late Frank Sinatra “orange is the happiest colour.

Wearing orange will help you to project yourself as someone who is energetic and full of vitality. It will show that you are optimistic and motivated. Beware of overdosing on orange and not balancing it with other colours. This can make you slightly extreme and over-active! Tints of orange in either peach, terracotta or coral are good for hospitals, schools and factories because

of the stimulating and warming effects of this colour. As it can focus the mind on physical comforts, orange has the ability to activate the appetite, therefore helping people feel positively and creatively about food. Orange is often used in restaurants, but is more warming than its neighbour red and as a vital, stimulating colour encourages good conversation and dining.

1

2

The Orange You Need For the cooler skin tones, wear more pink-based orange tones of peach as this is a colour to be worn in its brighter and stronger shades on warmer, yellow-based complexions. Wear orange with fuchsia to project a dynamic and fun personality, or blue for balance. Black and orange are a striking combination of warmth and coolness. Wearing black, which is mysterious and protective, will tone down oranges outgoing nature, balancing the introvert and extrovert and giving you a powerful presence. 4 5

A BOY NAMED AARON Meet Gold Coast creative Aaron Darcy, the artist behind our favourite new homewares and design label. Tell us about yourself and your life on the Gold Coast? You could call me a local, I’ve been based on the Gold Coast for 18 years. I relocated here to complete my schooling with my family and really enjoy the casual lifestyle that a coastal town can offer. I come from a very humble family background, well mannered and was very close to my mum. She was my mentor; sadly passing away three years ago – a lot of what I learnt has been poured into my work with love and dedication. My first career was actually in legal. I soon realised that a suit and tie was not for me, and turned back to being creative and focused all my energy into what I truly loved. With a background in creative aspects ranging from photography, digital design, marketing and art, I’d always dreamt of using all my skills for one purpose. I’m probably speaking for every creative person out there, but at times you can come across a blur with your process; so naturally I like to turn to the sea and clear my mind and recharge. Our beaches are truly energetic and one of the reasons that I actually still call this place home. When and how did your creative venture, A Boy Named Aaron, come to life? I have always enjoyed using my creativity and had wanted to bring my range of skills together into one brand. A Boy Named Aaron has been an unfolding adventure for the past 18 months. It simply begun from an idea and determination to create something great! What inspires your art? Travelling is a huge part of my inspirational process. I enjoy seeing cultures and traditional arts – they bring new meaning to handmade and remind me that skill is a true art form. Music is the sound of art and you will find me often creating to the sounds of international artists streaming through my internet radio. Nature, experimenting and research are other outlets that allow my creativity to evolve constantly. Tell me about your most memorable travels and how they inspired you? I’ve been to most parts of Asia, North 58 PROVOKE.COM.AU

America and India; not to mention many parts of our own country and New Zealand. I’ll share with you two of my most memorable moments. I like to feel I’m young at heart, so that happiest place on earth – Disneyland, truly is. You can be a kid for a day, regardless of your age, and just forget about everything else. It inspired me that dreams, no matter how big, can really become reality. I was also inspired by a trip to Cambodia. It was the first time I’d ever stepped foot in an Eastern country and it really opened my eyes. The people were so gentle and beautiful. It really makes you think and process our Western society and embrace how living simply can be taken for granted. I’ve taken inspiration for all the places I travel to. It’s just so incredible to learn about other ways of life and balance what you have to be thankful for.

Blue seems to be a constant theme in your work. Why is this? I originally started with a sculpture of an anchor, this is my signature and what I’m best known for. Blue reminds me of the ocean, the vast places it can take you to. All of my work has meaning and purpose. The colour blue is also representative of encouraging a peaceful, healthy expression through communication; you can learn more about colours looking up the meanings of certain Chakra colours. Your mood and emotion is influenced by the colours you have around you, and blue is one of my favourites. Whose home would you love to see your work in most? You know the honest answer to this is anyone that connects with what I create. Sure, I’d love the stigma of having a celebrity own a piece of my work, but I like to think that I create a range of art pieces that would give the opportunity for anyone to afford and have a genuine deep interaction with the artwork. I’ve supplied my work to the Caribbean, Europe, Russia, Japan, America, New Zealand and many Australian homes. Name the local artist who inspire you? I believe the creative world is always inspiring others. If you like, all artists are connected in a way. Right now, I’m excited to experiment with collaborations and have a project with another local artist, Joy French, creating very unique art pieces that combine a use of both artists’ skills to create original works never seen before. I personally find my inspiration from photography, colours and nature - continually surprising myself and to forever evolve.

If you could sum your art up in three words, what would they be? Honest, detailed, meaningful.

tunes streaming through my internet radio and a juice-to-go keeps me level-headed.

Your favourite medium to work with? Personally, the process of casting is my favourite type of art medium. I really like the organic feel to the final product, no perfect edges or forms; it’s freely made and has unique personal character – never two alike. While I’ve also used clays, wood and recycled materials, cast plaster ceramics are by far what I enjoy using most.

Who are you listening to at the moment? I’m right in to the sounds of Tame Impala, Rufus, Passion Pit, Galantis & jackLNDN. Music is a major part of my creative energy. More times than none I’m working to music to inspire me.

Favourite Gold Coast spot to unwind? Lately I’ve been finding myself down at Nobby’s for a little R&R. Being a pretty humble person, some chill time on the sand with a takeaway coffee,

Something people may not know about you? I’m open to trying anything that’s watermelon and banana-flavoured! W: aboynamedaaron.com.au

MOORE TO LOVE When Julianne Moore won the Oscar earlier this year for her moving portrayal of a woman afflicted by early-onset Alzeheimer’s in Still Alice, it was fitting recognition for an actress long regarded as one of Hollywood’s most gifted stars. WORDS: FRED ALLEN / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

F

or the past 20 years, Moore has been turning in one brilliant performance after another, and she may well find herself contending for yet more trophies in the coming awards season. Her new film, Freeheld, based on a true story, sees Moore starring as Laurel Hester, a New Jersey police lieutenant diagnosed with terminal lung cancer who wages a landmark legal battle to pass on her pension benefits to her same-sex partner, Stacie Andree (Ellen Page). Once again, audiences and critics alike will be overwhelmed by the compelling pathos Moore brings to the role. “The story of Laurel and Stacie is as much about love as it is about basic human rights,” Moore, 54, says. “They were a couple who wanted to enjoy the same things that most couples want - a house, a family, a dog - and to enjoy the same rights as any other couple. The film portrays a magnificent love story as well as a legal battle that shows how far we’ve come in the past decade in the struggle to bring equality as well as tolerance and understanding for people of different cultures, ethnicity, sexuality and gender.” One of the interesting aspects to the film is how co-star Ellen Page decided to come out publicly in February 2014 as a measure of her commitment to the film, which she also produced. Page felt that there was “no way” she could remain closeted while playing in

and promoting Freeheld. She was also “overjoyed” when Moore agreed to play Laurel: “Julianne has also played probably more gay women than anyone else and it was great to have her do the film. I couldn’t imagine anything or anyone better to play in a love story like this... It was one of the best moments of my career.” Directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), Freeheld boasts a strong supporting cast that includes Steve Carell as local gay activist Steven Goldstein and Michael Shannon as Dane Wells, Hester’s straight male partner on the police force who helps argue Hester’s case in defiance of local authorities, who initially rejected her pension rights claim as threatening “the sanctity of marriage”. Julianne Moore lives in New York with her director husband Bart Freundlich, 45, who she first met in 1996 and married in 2003, together with their children, Caleb, 17, and Liv, 13. For our chat at an upscale hotel suite in Toronto, where she was promoting both Freeheld and Maggie’s Plan, a comedy, Julianne Moore was smiling and enthusiastic as she discussed her life and career. She was also looking radiant in a blue Dior dress while her effervescent manner is a stark contrast to the often darker or sombre characters she has played in films, including Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Hannibal, Far From Heaven, A Single Man, and The Kids Are All Right.

Julianne, you and Ellen Page seem to have a wonderful chemistry in Freeheld that reflects the deep love between your characters. Did you become good friends away from the set? We didn’t have a lot of time to prepare before shooting began and our friendship developed naturally while we were making the movie. It was very beautiful and exciting to be able to create that intimacy between us. Whenever you’re on a set you hope that you can develop a connection to the other actor when your characters are deeply involved with each other. That doesn’t always happen, but in this case Ellen and I got to know each other very well and we became close. Did it make it much easier when it came to playing more intimate scenes together? It was very special for me to be able to feel that closeness to Ellen on and off the set. We were both very committed to make their relationship come alive. That was obviously very important in telling Laurel and Stacie’s story, who were very much in love, and that needed to come across. Do you have a favourite scene in the film that gets to the heart of their love story? It was the dancing scene that we had prepared and rehearsed a bit beforehand but when we got on the set and shot the sequence it felt so much deeper and more real. It was also more fun to do and felt very alive, which is what you’re always aiming for as actors. It’s a moment in the film u

“When it comes to love, we’re all equal.” that you will never forget, and it’s additional proof that when it comes to love, we’re all equal. Did you speak to Stacie Andree, Laurel’s partner, in your research for the film? Yes. Stacie was very much involved and it was very generous of her to be willing to relive this part of her life, because Laurel’s death was such a tragic and disturbing loss for her. It wasn’t easy for her, but she felt an obligation to help bring their story to life again, even though she’s a very quiet and unassuming person. We were very touched to have her blessing and support. What struck you most about your character, Laurel? She was incredibly dedicated and disciplined when it came to her detective work. Laurel was also very respectful of the concept of justice and she took that responsibility very seriously. That makes it all the more ironic that a woman who was so devoted to carrying out her duties and upholding the law had to fight so hard to find justice when it came to her own life, and wanting the woman she loved to be entitled to the same benefits that heterosexual partners enjoyed. It’s also ironic that this movie is being released after the Supreme Court decision (the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality on June 26th - ED), which is really an indication and celebration of how far we’ve come since Laurel and Stacie were fighting their battle. This is yet another role in which you play a gay woman. Do these roles hold a special significance for you? In terms of the role itself, it doesn’t matter to me whether I’m playing gay or straight. This film for me was mainly a beautiful love story above everything else. But of course I’m very sensitive to the issue of equal rights and the struggle against discrimination in all forms. What I hope people will also see in this kind

64 PROVOKE.COM.AU

of story is that your sexual preference doesn’t make any difference when it comes to who you are as a human being and your character and qualities as an individual. That’s something our culture as a whole needs to understand and appreciate and make it easier for people like Laurel and Stacie to live openly and without fear. I recall when I was in high school in the ’70s that a lot of kids I knew were questioning their sexuality, but no-one even dared to think about coming out. Even today it’s still a very sensitive issue in society, although a lot of progress has been made. Did Ellen Page talk to you about her own experience as a gay woman in the film industry? (Page revealed that she was gay at the February 2014 Human Rights Campaign event in Las Vegas - ED.) It was really a revelation for me when we discussed her experience in deciding to come out in Hollywood. I was so stunned when she told me how she had suffered for so many years pretending to be straight. She told me about how uncomfortable she felt wearing dresses and many other things that I would never have imagined about how difficult it had been for her as a young woman dealing with this issue. Making this film meant a lot to Ellen and I was very proud to get to know her and work with her in telling this particular story.

You have enjoyed your greatest success as an actress in your 40s and 50s. Does that surprise you? (Laughs) I’ve stopped thinking about it. I know I’ve been blessed with good genes and that age for some reason hasn’t been a factor in my being able to find great roles at this point in my career. I worry about my age a lot less now and I worry less about things in general than I ever have in my life. I feel a lot freer now and I am grateful to be able to enjoy a beautiful life with my family while also being able to keep doing interesting work. What are the best things about being a mother? It’s watching your children develop their own personalities and interests, and as they get older being able to talk to them about more serious things. It sometimes scares me to think that I was very worried in my 30s about not having a family of my own. I wanted children very badly and once I met my husband it was really the fulfilment of so many things. I truly love being a mother and my kids are so important to me. Has it been important to raise your children in New York as opposed to Los Angeles? It was never even an issue. I’ve always loved my life in New York and we have so many friends here and a real sense of community that you could never have in L.A. My husband and I are very comfortable here and we always knew this was the best place to bring up our kids, take them to school in the morning, and live very normally. Does living in New York make it easier to shield your children from the attention that you attract as a movie star? There’s so much going on in New York that actors aren’t as obsessed over as they are in L.A. People will greet me and talk to me, but it’s almost always very polite and respectful and my children have grown up with the idea that their mother has this job that draws attention. My kids are very used to all that and now that they’re older it’s not something that affects them at all, really. Has winning the Oscar (for Still Alice) changed anything in your life? No. It’s a great feeling, but you still get up the next morning, make sure the kids get off to school, and think about your next job! (Laughs)

Matt Corby There aren’t many musicians who could sporadically release a track once every few years and still be as revered as the day they first shot to fame, but for Sydney artist Matt Corby, it’s proving to be no problem. Two years on from his last EP release ‘Resolution’, and four years since the release of ‘Into The Flame’ (featuring ‘Brother’), the musician has once again demonstrated why he is an unshakable force in the Australian music scene. Just like previous hits, ‘Monday’ has all of the trademarks of a Matt Corby song: wailing falsettos, soulful storytelling and the smooth slide between soft and harsh, but unlike other tracks, this new release focuses

solely on the musician’s voice. Interestingly, ‘Monday’ was in fact created entirely from Corby’s vocals, using only body-produced sounds to create the percussion and backing. If this track is anything to go by, we’re very excited to hear what else he has in store! W: mattcorby.com.au

Jessica Mauboy: What a Year! Despite finishing second place on Australian Idol in 2006, Jessica Mauboy’s talent has stood the test of time – and she truly isn’t slowing down any time soon! As well as having a debut fragrance and exciting new album in the works, the pop musician has also been mixing fashion with art through projects with Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art. As if she isn’t busy enough, Jess is also the newly appointed ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation as well as Yipirinya School in Alice Springs, and is passionate about helping to improve and inspire the lives of disadvantaged Indigenous children. It’s always beautiful to see high-profile artists using their platform to give back, and it’s Jessica Mauboy’s generous spirit and integrity to her roots that continues to see her as one of Australia’s most well-loved and respected artists. MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF HOMELESS When a group of good-hearted locals came together during the 2011 Brisbane floods to help survivors return to their homes, many of them discovered a true passion for helping those in need. Deciding to band together, ‘Making a Difference’ was formed, and since then the local group have been helping out wherever they can – particularly with the homeless community.

S

peaking with Denise from ‘Making a Difference (MAD)’, she explained to me their passion for helping the community – from the homeless to survivors of domestic abuse – with everyday essentials. “[We have a] passion for the homeless and we provide [them with] backpacks full of toiletries, snacks, blankets and scarves,” she said. “We literally have provided thousands of backpacks since we began in 2012, and have also assisted survivors of domestic violence with household goods. We never judge a person’s circumstances, as we know being homeless is only two pay packets away if something goes haywire.” The group also get together regularly at ‘Street Feed’ events, and have been blown away by the generosity of their supporters, who give without expecting anything in return. “To participate in a street feed and see their faces when you hand them a backpack – words cannot describe,” shared Denise. “... time after time [our supporters] keep giving. They’re not looking for accolades, they just want to help.” To find out more about how you can help, head to facebook.com/ MakingaDifferenceBrisbane Q & A with Denise, from Making a Difference. 1. Where did the inspiration to start “making a difference” begin, and what has been your journey so far? Many of the MaD team met during the 2011 floods working in community groups helping survivors return to their homes. We sourced furniture, household goods, clothing and offered support where needed. When the need for our help was over, a few of us decided to help others in the community such as victims of domestic violence and the homeless. Our journey so far has been amazing. We have seen the best and the very worst of people, however we have never been

discouraged. Our support from huge numbers of likers on our page is nothing less than incredible, and without them we couldn’t achieve what we do. 2. What is the mission? Our mission is to support and provide help for anyone in need. Our passion is the homeless and we provide a backpack full of toiletries, snacks, blankets, scarves etc. We literally have provided thousands of backpacks since we began in 2012, also assisting survivors of domestic violence with household goods, and we have a special MaD pamper basket for a special treat for our families. We also assist many other community groups that have no funding. We never judge a person’s circumstances, as we know being homeless is only two pay packets away if something goes haywire. 3. How do you aim to help locals in the community who are homeless? We have a network of community groups that keep in constant contact and we all help each other. We assist with street feeds and also assist some of the better known charities that are hands-on with helping the homeless.

4. Is it better for community members to donate goods rather than money? We do not accept money, we post up on our Facebook page what our needs are. For example if we get a client that needs household items we post up what is required and we usually have a huge response for what is needed. We pick up the donations, sort them and then they are delivered to the client. We hold continual toiletry appeals throughout the year and have a core list of items that go into the backpacks. Once received toiletries are sorted, placed in the backpacks and handed out. 5. What is one moment or particular story that has stood out to you? The homeless prefer to stay out of the limelight. They are never greedy and are so very grateful. To participate in a street feed and see their faces when you hand them a backpack, words cannot describe. The generosity of our supporters who time after time keep giving and are not looking for accolades, they just want to help. Also the MaD team who give so much of their time, even though the majority of which are working, have children and have very busy lives.

AWARENESS WITHOUT ACTION IS NOT ENOUGH

W

ith an average of two women dying every week as a result of male violence, we should all be aware by now of this issue; but awareness without action won’t solve the problem. So what can we do? Whether you know someone personally, or you’re just desperate to see change in our culture, here are some practical ways that you can make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims. Give back: If you have a background in Law, you might consider offering some free or discounted legal services to victims of domestic abuse. Quite often when a woman is caught in an abusive relationship the process of leaving her partner or hiring a

lawyer can be extremely stressful and financially difficult – particularly for those with young children. Personal Support: It can be heartbreaking to see someone we love go through domestic violence, but often the support of a friend is instrumental in helping them to leave an abusive partner. Letting your friend or family member know that you are there to support and not judge is extremely helpful. When kids are involved: Finding the time and energy to reach out for help, move house, seek legal representation, and make police reports is difficult for any victim, but when children are involved it can be overwhelming. If you’ve got some spare time on your

hands, you might consider babysitting or picking your friend’s children up from school while she is at work or attending important appointments. Get creative: Despite Australia’s Domestic Violence crisis, many shelters and charities are without proper funding, and so are left with no other option than to turn away victims. Organisations such as Women’s Legal Service Queensland can only help 5% of women calling in, despite seeing a 40% spike in calls this year. If you’re the creative type, you might want to organise a charity lunch to help raise money for a local shelter, take on a marathon, or even host a movie night . The options are endless!

Culture-Changing Tunes He may be a well-respected hip hop artist who plays national tours and major festivals, but L-Fresh the Lion is not your average musician. Proving to be a powerful force in the Australian music scene, this Melbourne artist has grown to fame with inspiring performances, a unique style and thoughtprovoking lyrics that seek to unite and dismantle prejudice. Exploring cultural issues of discrimination, racism and equality is never an easy feat, but nevertheless, it is a key quality that defines L-Fresh in the music scene. Listening to tracks such as ‘One’, ‘Survive’ and ‘Get Mine,’ it’s easy to see a common theme emerge; L-Fresh tackles the most pertinent of social issues with overwhelming optimism and integrity. Influenced by the soulful movement in US hip hop of the late 1990s / early 2000s, along

with musical elements reflecting his cultural and ancestral Punjabi Sikh roots, L-Fresh uses his profile to challenge cultural problems, champion progress and celebrate the unique differences that make us all human. L-Fresh is also a passionate advocate for the rights of asylum seekers and currently works with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, as well as being an ambassador for ‘All Together Now’ – Australia’s only national charity existing solely to address racism. Having signed to legendary Australian hip hop label Elefant Traks this year, L-Fresh The Lion released the bold and energetic first single ‘Get Mine (feat. Parvyn Kaur Singh of Bombay Royale)’, from his highly anticipated sophomore album, due out in 2016. W: l-fresh.com Summer 2015/16 71

CULTURE | Bikers Against Child Abuse

MEET THE QLD BIKERS AGAINST CHILD ABUSE

They may look ‘rough and tumble’, but that’s all part of their strategy for empowering and restoring victims of child abuse. Meet Queensland’s Guardian Angels of the road. WORDS: JAS RAWLINSON

F

or victims of child abuse, the journey to healing is one that is long and tiring; often made more challenging by police interviews, court hearings and threats from their abuser. One organisation, however, is changing all of that. Originally founded in Utah, ‘Bikers Against Child Abuse’ (BACA) is now a worldwide operating support network of men and women whose main focus is to help abused children regain their

inner strength. Whether it be escorting them to court hearings, riding in the middle of the night to comfort a child who is fearful of their abuser, or helping their parents to feel safer, no job is too hard for these big-hearted bikers. Usually media shy, I was honoured to have the chance to meet and interview BACA’s QLD President ‘Nifty’ (his road name), who shared with me how the organisation empowers children to go from victim to victor.

BACA are doing an incredible job with helping kids to overcome their fears. What do you do to help them feel safe? It really depends on the situation, ...but the main way we provide aid, comfort, safety and support is through our emotional and physical presence. When a child is a victim of abuse they’ve had their innocence stripped; they’ve had their trust in people – grown adults – removed. We’ve seen children who can’t step outside the front door because

72 PROVOKE.COM.AU

72-75_Bikers.indd 72

21/12/2015 8:08 pm

they think everybody’s out to get them, and often [these kids] are threatened... so knowing that they’ve got [support from] all these roughand-tumble looking blokes and ladies on motorbikes – and the motorbikes are the key – they understand that we are there for them. Our single narrow focus is to remove the fear, and that’s all we concentrate on. How that happens, could be that we contact them every couple of weeks after we’ve done an initial visit, and then we have our primary contacts [on call] after that. As they need us they’ll text us. They might have fears at night time, [in which case] we will sit out the front of their house, and we’ll stay there all night if we need to. We are there for the child; we’re not interested in the perpetrator. We’re there to shield the child, so the child will know we’re there waiting for them. Whether we’re sitting out of the front of their house or a court, or escorting them to school, or dealing with a bully situation – which is of course handled a little bit differently – they know we’re there. We’re on call for the child; they have our number and they will ring whenever they need us. That must be a huge comfort for these children to know that someone bigger than their abuser is there for them. Yes. And that’s what it is; we’re not trying to replace their strength with ours. We don’t wish in any way for a child to say, ‘I can’t go outside unless they’re here’. We wish for BACA to empower the child, for them to say, ‘I don’t need to be afraid anymore. There are people in this world that are caring and who aren’t going to hurt me’. Our whole focus is to empower a child, for them not to be fearful anymore, for them to regain their childhood again. Our closure is where one day they just don’t need us anymore. It’s the ultimate goal that they never need to ring us again, because they don’t need us. It sounds funny to say ‘closure’, but you get to meet some really cool characters as children, and to see their strength and resilience is incredible. We feed off some of their strength sometimes. Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you are listening to some of their stories? Look, definitely. Our International Founding Chief compares it to owning a wolf. It’s a nice cuddly pet one day, and then it bites you on the bum the next. We do need to keep our members in check, because the most important people in BACA are our members. We need to make sure they’re not taking any of the grief onboard and that it’s not affecting them emotionally. We keep each other in check and we have briefs before and after we visit the family. We also tell the families that we

Representatives From Australia B.A.C.A ® with Scootr (International President) and Di Brat from the USA do not wish to know, or need to know, the ins and outs of the story – that’s for the medical practitioners or other legal entities. We are there for the child. We don’t give opinions or advice – there’s plenty of other networks that assist with that, and we support them in getting to those networks. What sort of age groups does BACA work with in terms of children? Zero to 18. We have had some cases in the past where it’s been a little bit past 18, because of certain trauma – you know, young adults who are still very childlike – but if it works, and it continues to work, we’ll still continue to be there for as long as they need us. Even at a young age a lot of people say, ‘If it’s a two-year-old toddler how do they really pick up on what you’re there for?’ In that situation, we’re empowering their environment so their legal guardian will feel more empowered as well. We’ve fitted locks to doors before, and security lighting, so that [the child’s] mum is no longer too scared to open the door every time the doorbell rings. The child feeds off that reaction, and in that way we’ve empowered their environment a little bit more. Is it hard to say goodbye to some of these kids when the time comes? Of course. You get to see these children grow, see them develop – become children again – and some of the cases last for years. Sometimes you get to know them and it’s a bit sad [to let go], but we have to remember that if that child no longer needs us, then that’s great – we’ve done as much as we can. We’ve seen stories from around the world where [former

BACA supported kids] have ended up becoming BACA members themselves, or they’ve gone on to pursue a personal career in helping others. That must be an amazing opportunity to witness, to see them come full circle and either join BACA or put their focus into helping others. It sounds very rewarding. Oh it is, it is. Sometimes children give us a drawing that they’ve done of us, or give us their favourite rock, and that’s what we call being ‘paid in full’. That’s our payment. I’ve got stickers inside my vest that the kids have put on me, and a rock in my pocket that I always keep – it means a lot to them. It’s symbolic to them, like when we give them a teddy bear and a vest. It’s a great little connection. I read that BACA originally began in USA. How did the QLD chapter come to be, and how did you become aware of it? Around five years ago there were a group of us already doing some charity work, and we found we had a legitimate and genuine desire to help others. We knew about BACA – they’d been in Australia for around 10 years, but they’d never been in QLD – so we decided to see how we could start a chapter up here. I think I made the first call in November 2009 and it sort of started to take shape from there. We took almost two years to get going, as it takes about 12 months of learning just to start a chapter. [During that time] you’re under a guidance or chapter development officer. We also let other motorcycle groups around QLD know [our plans], to find out if there was any resistance to what we wanted to do. Summer 2015/16 73

Front row, From left to right: Krash Founder Australia, Bear QLD, Scootr international President USA, Di Brat Child Liaison USA, T Secretary Australia QLD, Nifty President QLD. Did anyone from those groups want to join with you guys? No, not really. They understood we were passionate about it and that it took a big commitment to join; we needed to make sure we had the right people. I read a comment from an Adelaide member who said that BACA go through a pretty lengthy process to join, and he certainly wouldn’t want to be someone who was trying to scam BACA, because it wouldn’t go down well. No, it wouldn’t end well (laughs). Joining BACA is a long process – whether it’s starting a chapter or coming into membership – and we’re definitely not a social club. We’re a committed group of bikers that sign up to this, and [those who join] need to be people who can fit BACA, because we don’t intend to change for anybody. We definitely take men and women on-board, as we often deal with female children and it works well [for them to have a female contact]. At the moment in the QLD chapter it takes nearly two years to become a full member. Wow, that is a long process! Does that involve things such as background checks? Definitely. Someone [who joins] will hang around for nearly 12 months, so we’re not going to take someone on-board who’s not really into it, or someone who’s looking for a social club or something like that. We do background checks, blue card checks, we get to know where they live and their family – sort of understand the character of that person – and then we’ll sponsor them into the Chapter. They will then do another 12 months, after which they will then be able to wear a patch, noting that they are a support member. For that period of time (which is a minimum of 12 months) they can come along for our children visits, to see if it’s right for them. In reality, it’s not for everyone –

How many families usually end up contacting BACA each month? We usually take on one per month, and I think we’ve got around eight active child cases at the moment. We don’t do the whole radio and billboard advertising thing because we all have our own personal jobs – we don’t get paid for this – so if we went out there and did too much exposure we would be inundated. I can count on one hand how many full weekends I’ve had off this year, and most of our members are the same. It does take a lot of commitment.

Jas Rawlinson and Nifty there’s a hell of a lot of commitment, and we’re talking and dealing with a lot of really delicate subjects. Have you had many people who’ve gone to sign up and then decided it’s not for them? Plenty. Heaps of them. ‘Commitment’ is a scary word for a lot of people and we won’t water that down. If a child rings us at one o’clock in the morning and needs us there, we’ll get on our motorbikes and ride there. That’s a commitment that some can’t make, and that’s fine, we’ve got no problem with that. We’d rather they be honest with themselves. Our primary focus is to make sure we have the right people to empower these kids. It’s great to hear that BACA go to such lengths to ensure they have the right people on-board, as I imagine trust would be something that could be very hard for a lot of children and their parents. That’s exactly right. We try to filter the right people, and we always operate in pairs when we’re dealing with a family – again, another safety net – so it’s always two full members who will do visits.

Does your wife usually come along as well? Definitely. She’s one of our founding members, and she’s just as committed as anybody else. She’s what we call a ‘primary’ for a child. So when we go and visit children as a group we’ll always assign two primaries, and they’re the two direct contacts for the family. My wife helps with a lot of the female children, because they have that special bond. I know BACA don’t associate as a charity, but is there a way people can support you? We say we’re not fundraising focused, but fundraising is a necessary part as we do need money. It takes money for our phone bill, our marketing, brochures, etcetera, and for the children that we do go and visit it costs about $110 per child. We present them with a number of items, which all cost money; a little teddy bear, vests and things like that. We try to get a lot of those items donated as much as we can, but there are always costs.

If you want to learn more about BACA or make a donation towards their great work, head to australia.bacaworld.org or phone 1800 692 222.

The World Festival Rhythm and Vines When: 29 – 31 December Where: Gisborne, New Zealand How much: Festival tickets from $90 If you want to be the first to see in the New Year, Sydney Harbour isn’t the only place to do it. Rhythm and Vines is New Zealand’s biggest New Year’s Eve festival and the

first festival in the world to welcome the sunrise of the new year. The festival is named for the family vineyard it takes place in, at Waiohika Estate, Gisborne. This year the lineup is enormous, with Aussies Angus and Julia Stone, Pendulum and Peking Duk sharing the stage with New Zealand

hip-hop phenom Scribe. The huge line-up is spread across three days on five stages and you can choose to stay in a campervan, glamp under canvas, stay in a cute little tepee village, VIP it in a hotel, or keep it real in a good old tent. The festival isn’t just about music though – pool parties run from day to

night at each of the camp’s three swimming pools, there’s volleyball on the beach, you can take boat trips to Taumotu Island (which also happens to be the area’s best surf spot), spot dolphins in the ocean and rock-slide on an inflatable ring by Rere Falls. W: rhythmandvines.co.nz

TOP 10 HOLIDAY TRAVEL TIPS Are you planning on making the most of your time off by heading away from home? Here are our top tips for planning, and surviving your holiday getaway. 1. Avoid peak travel dates – As a rule, it’s cheaper to fly on Christmas Day. Most people plan to already be at their destination for the big day, but if you’re looking to save dollars this is a no-brainer. 2. Book early – You can snag some great last-minute travel deals, but book your “must dos” early so you’re not heartbroken if they book out. 3. Pack wisely – If you’re like us, you’ll have an entirely new wardrobe one day into your holiday. Pack only the things you would use in everyday life as they will undoubtedly be your gotos when living fast out of a suitcase. 4. Do your research – Do you know your airline’s baggage

allowance, what time the rental car desk closes, the time difference where you’re landing? 5. Stay connected – Check out our feature on Outbound on page 86 – the new must-have travel app masterminded by two Brisbane travellers. 6. Plan for unplanned – Don’t book every second of your time before you arrive. Leave space in your schedule for the unplanned secret hideaways that the locals will let you in on. 7. Expect delays – It’s the busiest time for travel so they will happen. Just accept it and pack a good book. 8. Pack an empty suitcase – Because, shopping. 9. Invest in hand sanitiser – There’s nothing worse than finally clocking off for the year only to spend your entire holiday with Mr Sniffles. 10. Just breathe – Being an irate traveller never gets you anywhere faster.

Months of torrential rain, a 400-day fight to free a friend from prison, an orphaned baby wallaby and three luxury tents to be stitched and welded. This was the journey to Nightfall. WORDS: EMMA HERON

ightfall Wilderness Camp is serene. It’s three luxury safari tents are nestled harmoniously in a Lost World paradise, and the babbling headwaters of Christmas Creek play their soundtrack. The iconic World Heritage Lamington National Park rainforest provides the artwork. There is no excess, or as owner Heidi Ross puts it, “no fake plastic bits”. It comes as no surprise that the boutique back-to-nature experience is proving to be exactly what people are looking for. The accommodation is booked out well into 2016. But the tranquil oasis that Heidi and her husband, Steve, have built is the calm after the storm. “Our journey hasn’t been a simple one,” Heidi told me, before undoubtedly proving this was an understatement. “When we started to build, it started to rain. Within the first four months we had all of our annual rainfall. Within eight months we had almost double our annual rainfall.” The record wet season meant heavy machinery wasn’t an option, and so Steve and his team of volunteers hauled the 180kg tent frames on to the site themselves. Everything else manmade at Nightfall is also from the hand of its owners. Heidi, who was born in Uganda, stitched the safari tents, which she had envisaged would be similar to the tentage accommodation she had grown up around in Africa. She had once sewn a tent for her Southbank market stall and figured this would be no different. Steve had worked in construction so he took care of the welding. “There’s a bit of a saying that life sets you up for the things that are to come, and I think that’s very true for us,” Heidi said, ever the optimist. “It was do it ourselves or get a

DISCOVER THE STINSON WRECK-SITE February 1937 Australia was shocked to hear that a Stinson airplane was reported missing after cyclonic conditions on a flight from Brisbane to Lismore. AirForce and private planes searched for the wreck, but it was bushman Bernard O’Reilly who solved the mystery. The Scenic Rim pioneer’s two-day solo-trek to a burntout spot in the forest uncovered the remains of the plane and later led to the rescue to the two surviving passengers. Of the seven men on board, four died in the crash. Jim Westray had survived and gone for help, but his body was later found. He had died as a result of a fall over a waterfall.

TIP: While the track to Westray’s Grave is suitable for most fitness levels, the trail from Christmas Creek to the Stinson Wreck is best only attempted by experienced bushwalkers or those who are fit and accompanied by a guide.

“Nightfall is not a hotel or a resort, it’s an experience.” million dollar mortgage, and we couldn’t get a million dollar mortgage, so we just said ‘Yep, we’re going to do it’.” Almost immediately after the rain stopped Heidi and Steve battened down the hatches as they faced the next storm – the arrest of good friend and Australian journalist Peter Greste in Egypt. Once a journalist herself, working for the ABC out of its London office, Heidi was on the case. She had been Peter’s best man at his wedding; Peter’s mum, Lois, made her wedding cake and his dad, Juris, made the tables for Nightfall. Heidi ended up running the successful Free Peter Greste international media campaign for 400 days. “It got a little convoluted in there,” she said, again understating the enormity of her effort. “Nightfall was slowed by all of that, but that can make for a richer product too, because you have time to think. Well, you’re supposed to have time to think. You have time to evolve! We haven’t had much time to think.” While Heidi and Steve were juggling Nightfall’s first “guinea-pig guests” and relentless calls from over 350 journalists across the world, their staff grew by one orphaned baby wallaby. Lillypilly was under Heidi’s constant care, even attending a press conference in Brisbane. Heidi laughed as she remembered how she had to convince an American journalist that this wasn’t “normal” in Australia. Lilly stayed on for a while as Nightfall’s concierge, but has since moved on to start a family of her own. Mister, the Jack Russell, remains in charge of guest relations. As Heidi and Steve’s focus returned fully to Nightfall, the camp took root and blossomed in the Gold Coast hinterland. As it grew, there were always two main considerations – eco-sustainability and a unique point of view. Despite being the first luxury camp of this kind in Queensland, Heidi and Steve knew they would not be the last, and so they were determined that their details would define them. “For us it’s about individuality,” Heidi said. “Nightfall is not a hotel or a resort, it’s an experience. We wanted it to have a feel where when you walk in you go ‘Wow’. And then you continue to go ‘Wow’.” They have succeeded. Summer 2015/16 83

FROM THE GUESTS

Inside the canvas walls of the architecturally artisan tents are “layers of understated luxury”. Atop the king-sized beds are linen cushions from Reinventare, delightfully soft linen sheets from Cultiver, Scandinavian-style towels from Linum and Luna Gallery’s delectable mohair blankets. There is the option of soaking in a vintage tin bath or luxuriating under the copper rain-head shower. A fireplace rotates in the centre of the tent. With timber floors underfoot and the option to raise or lower your walls, this is a level of luxury and comfort that camping has never known in Queensland. “Very often you wonder if you should just compromise and go with the normal chrome taps,” Heidi admits. “But I’m very glad we didn’t.” Nightfall’s unique experiences don’t end with its homely designer decor. At night, Heidi and Steve begin the process of lighting 101 lanterns and spreading them around the creek beds so guests can make the most of their natural setting. “We serve a three-course fire-cooked meal on the rapids; we call it Dining on the Rapids, and with the lantern flames flickering against the water it’s quite stunning. It’s actually reduced quite a few people to tears,” Heidi proudly admitted. “We are not chefs by any means, but we use as local as possible, but otherwise organic, fresh, seasonal produce, and I think good food combined with fire cooking really brings out some incredible flavours.” Nightfall does not offer a menu – instead your likes and dislikes are 84 PROVOKE.COM.AU

FROM THE GUESTS Nightfall is a wonderful, peaceful place to relax. The tents need to be seen to be believed and the setting is magnificent...the height of camping luxury with simple pleasures on offer all round. Tammy S I am making Nightfall a yearly “thing”. This is truly an exceptional place to stay. I love camping and I love luxury accommodation too… so I knew I’d love Nightfall Camp when I booked, but it wasn’t until I arrived here that I realised just how awesome this place is. Nick B My partner and I have just returned from two nights at Nightfall and are lost for words. I’ve never experienced anything like it, amazing. Ashleigh B

“We live in a tent. I finally, in my 40s, get to live in a tent, and I don’t know how I’ll ever go back to a house.” taken into account well before you arrive so that a meal is personally crafted. The fresh and organic feasts can also be delivered to your tent as a Butler’s Basket, pre-prepared for cooking on your private BBQ or warming on your kitchen hotplate. Proving that they are the ultimate hosts, Heidi and Steve even wine-match your meal. And there’s an espresso coffee machine. During the day, Nightfall guests can do as little or as much as they like. Adventurers can take on the three hour round trip in old-growth rainforest to find the historic Westray’s Grave and Stinson wreck-site, or chase panoramic views with a hike to the tip of Buchanan Falls. Back at camp there is the option of a massage, private yoga and oneon-one beauty therapy in your tent or on the creek. Heidi recommended that one of the greatest delights on offer is

simply to stop. “We’re so programmed to keep doing things that one of the hardest things is just to do nothing. Just to absorbs what’s going on around us.” I can think of no better place to stop, switch off and absorb. While Nightfall has all of the romantic trappings of a private getaway, the camp just as readily cultivates a connectedness between like-minded guests. One of Heidi’s favourite experiences is when the communal tented lounge is “rocking with laughter” as guests huddle around the open fire in Winter. “We get all of the money organised and over and done with two week before you’re booked in, so by the time a lot of people arrive they already know the dog’s name, and they greet you with a big hug. They aren’t afraid to go to the fridge and help themselves with a drink or help out chopping the carrots or picking the vegies out of the garden. We just really really enjoy sharing the space.” And Heidi and Steve genuinely do share the rainforest with their guests. “We live in a tent. I finally, in my 40s, get to live in a tent, and I don’t know how I’ll ever go back to a house,” Heidi laughed. “Hopefully I’ll never have to. There comes a point in many of our lives where we just get a bit overwhelmed by all of the clutter and all of the crap and all of the busyness, so we’ve stripped all of that back.” Nightfall was built to Ecotourism Australia’s Advanced Eco-Tourism Certification criteria. “We minimise our waste, produce our own power, collect our own water and grow our own food,” Heidi said. “We actually live that sustainable life that we spruik about.” It was the clean water of Christmas Creek that attracted Heidi and Steve to the camp site initially and they intend on keeping it that way. “[Nightfall] has got views, but you can get views anywhere. You can’t get water that is so clean that you can drink it anywhere.” Listening to Heidi’s passion for a sustainable carbonneutral lifestyle makes it clear why the camp will only ever accommodate three couples at any time despite being solidly booked. It is without a doubt a full-time job creating a fully serviced experience for guest while also treading lightly on the largely untouched paradise. “People always ask why we don’t just build more tents, but that’s not what it’s all about,” Heidi said. “If you build more tents Nightfall becomes normal, whereas now it’s intimate and very personal.” At its core, Nightfall Wilderness Camp is a soothing remedy for when life is too easily filled by too much. Heidi, as someone who knows how to thrive with nature, puts it perfectly: “Really, what do you need? You need shelter, and it needs to be shelter that feels good on the soul. Of course it needs to be functional too, but a 60sqm luxury tent does that easily.” Summer 2015/16 85

TWO GUYS, THE WORLD AND A SUPER-APP Queensland mates Ryan Hanly and Mark Cantoni knew there had to be a better way to be a connected, solo traveller, so they made one. Their travel app, Outbound, has since been featured in the App Store’s ‘Best New Apps’ list. We caught up with Ryan to find out how the self-confessed “non-techies” did it. WORDS: EMMA HERON

A chat with Outbound co-founder, world traveler and dad, Ryan Hanly. So give us the rundown. What is Outbound and how does it work? Essentially, it’s an app for solo travellers who want to connect with other like-minded travellers abroad. The winning feature of the app is that you can perfectly tailor it to what you want. So you’re a solo traveller that would like to connect other with other solo travellers? No problem. Maybe you’re a female backpacker that only wants to connect with other female travellers? Easy. You launched Outbound in January 2015. What sparked the inspiration for the app? Well Mark and I have both done a lot of solo travelling so it really came from that. We were sitting in North Burleigh Surf Club one day and spoke to a bunch of backpackers about the idea and they went “Oh yeah, you’ve got to do this. This is perfect. This is what we need,” and then off it went from there.

three weeks of solo travel. So I flew out to Lagos in Portugal and arrived and just went, “Oh my God, what do I do now?”. I still remember that night. It took me a couple of hours and I went from bar to bar before I actually had the guts to go up and speak to someone. So I guess we’re trying to take the awkwardness out of that first contact. Because you can match trips on the app, you can actually start talking to people before you even arrive. Apart from not being techy, what other challenges have you come up against? Well I was the head of PE at a high school [Padua College], and Mark is a surveyor by trade, but he’s got his own labour-hire business as well. So we’re literally just two guys, from completely different industries, with an idea about yet another industry. Pretty much everything you can possibly imagine has been a challenge so far. There’s a saying in the start-up scene that is to ‘fail fast’, so that’s what we do – fail, learn and move on.

In your travels, when would Outbound have been most useful? When I was living in London and I went off on my big Summer trip, I was doing

Can women feel safe using Outbound and meeting up with what are essentially strangers? At the moment, women make up 55% of users of the app and that’s validation for us that we have created a platform that people can trust and that is secure. When designing the app we actually had females in mind. There are a lot of features we have put in for female travellers. If you go into the settings of the app you can actually flick a switch so that you choose who you want to be seen by. So if you only want to be seen by other females, you can choose that setting. So in that sense, there is an app there just for female travellers. Flick the switch and it’s a female Outbound. The good thing is, we are eight months in and we have not had one complaint of people being hassled.

TRAVEL | Small Town Girl Project

WHERE SMALL TOWNS AND TEEN LIFE COLLIDE They say you can take the girl out of the town, but you can’t take the town out of the girl – something that photographer Elize Strydom’s visual work captures beautifully. Celebrating the unique wonder, freedom and lives of girls in rural communities across Australia and the world, Small Town Girl Project is a series of fascinating images that paint a vivid picture of life beyond the city. rowing up in small towns herself, Elize Strydom always felt that she was destined for bigger things. Moving from Grafton in NSW to the seaside town of Woolgoolga in her late teens, Elize would find herself looking out the window and dreaming of life in the big city. “I remember sitting in my bedroom when I was a teenager, looking out the window and thinking, ‘I’m missing out on life! There’s so much life out there and I’ve got to wait until it’s my turn to step out into this world that I know is out there’. I was so dramatic,” she laughs, reminiscing as we chat about life in

a small town. Having also spent my childhood and teenage years living in small towns, I asked Elize how she feels now that she’s living in Sydney, and whether she misses her home town. “I am definitely very happy in the city,” she says, “but when I went back to Woolgoolga recently for three days I was like ‘Oh this is paradise!’ It’s always that ‘grass is greener’ thing. [Seeing both sides though] has certainly made me appreciate what I had growing up.” Drawing on her experiences of growing up away from the big city, Elize began to wonder what life was like for other teens in rural towns, and gradually, the beginnings of her project, ‘Small Town Girl’, began to form. “I’d been thinking about it in vague terms for a while... but I guess [the idea] initially formed when I was studying in New York for three months in 2011…,” she explained. “Being in such a massive city lead me to reflect on my life and my teenage years, and how foreign and far away it seemed from where I was in that moment.” Deciding to share her thoughts with a close friend, Elize realised she just had to put her dreams into action. “I told my friend about this idea of revisiting my home town and seeing what life is like there now for teenage girls, and she told me it was something I had to do. So the next day I applied for leave and took two weeks off.” Putting out a callout and chasing connections through her friends and family, Elize met up with a few teenage girls around North East NSW. As she tells me this, I joke with her that it’s probably a good thing she’s a female photographer; I mean, after all, it could get a bit awkward going on the hunt for ‘’teenage girls’’ through your mother’s church if you were a man. “Yes! Exactly,” she laughs. “I definitely feel like I have access that I

wouldn’t have if I were a man.” Since those small beginnings, Elize has explored tiny towns across Australia, America and South Africa, participating in unusual traditions (such as an ‘annual lobster bake’ in Maine – “It was like their 33rd annual bake!” she laughs) and creating unforgettable friendships along the way. “The kind of towns you’d drive past and not think twice about,” she says when telling me about her travels. “Towns that made you realise that it’s not about the place, it’s about the people who are there.” Using the power of social media, and her family connections (she was born in South Africa), Elize was able to spend time with some families in a remote town a few hours from Johannesburg, and talks fondly when recounting her time in South Africa. Was it one of her favourite places, I ask? Most definitely, she says; excitement still punctuating her words. “The first girl I photographed – Mpho – came about really spontaneously and in a really beautiful way. I was staying with my uncle and aunty in a small town a few hours from Johannesburg, and one day she asked if I’d like to meet Mpho’s family. We went to this township where only black African people were living, and we spent the afternoon with Mpho, and her mother and grandmother. I had such an amazing time, and at the end of the afternoon I asked Mpho, ‘Hey, how do you feel about me photographing you for a week and just hanging out with you?’ She was thrilled – we pretty much just hit it off straight away, and had this incredible week. “The people were just so incredibly lovely and so willing to share their lives and the way that they live. It feels like such a young nation, and there’s so much potential in South Africa; Summer 2015/16 89

it feels like people there are really engaged and invested in the country’s future. Travelling there as a woman, I think I was a little bit worried, but when I was with people who lived there I didn’t really ever feel like I was in danger. A lot of South African people were always saying to me, ‘Go back and tell people from Australia that South Africa is a wonderful country! They should listen to some good news stories as opposed to all the bad news stories’.” One thing that really stood out to Elize in all her travels was just how connected to technology, fashion and city-life these girls were, regardless of how isolated their towns. “I think that’s because of the internet,” she says. “When I was growing up there [was no online shopping] and only a few shops to choose from and everyone wore the same thing.” As Elize talks, I suddenly have a vision of myself dressed in cheap, fluoro nylon outfits from Supre, the only shop where I could find teenage clothing that fitted me (the surf-shop brands were all too big!). Elize sympathises, and we have a laugh at our shared ‘small town’ experiences. “I think the gap is being bridged now,” she notes. “It’s not as wide as when I was younger, and with these girls, whether you’re in Broken Hill, or Justin, Texas, or Byron Bay, you can buy everything online.” And what’s planned for 2016? Will Small Town Girl head to new countries? “I’m planning to go back to South Africa in April!” Elize excitedly reveals.“The idea is not to shoot more small-town girls, but to revisit the girls who I’ve already photographed, because I feel like we established such a great connection. It’s been kind of hard to stay in touch, and I want to reinforce those relationships and kind of expand on what I’ve already experienced with those girls; to see if things have changed or if they’ve stayed the same.” Beyond this, Elize is also looking into options that may see her travel to Iran and Israel! “Don’t tell my mum!” she laughs. “They’re not locked in, but they’re options at the moment. “Also, in terms of continuing in Australia, I’m in talks with a number of refugee advocacy and resettlement groups about photographing girls who’ve arrived as refugees and been resettled in small Australian towns. I thought that would be a really interesting way to push the project forward, and still photograph girls who are Australian, but have backgrounds in other countries and came here to start a new life.” To keep up with Small Town Girl project follow them on Instagram.

Elize’s travel tips…

I try to pack as light as possible. When I went to South Africa for two weeks I just took a duffle bag. Just music, one book, my journal – I write a lot and always need to be reflecting, so I make sure that’s the one thing I take. I kind of like being limited with what I can wear, and not having to stand in front of the cupboard everyday thinking ‘I don’t know what to wear!’

On why she loves shooting old school…

I love the aesthetic qualities of film, I feel like they have more texture and more depth; they

seem to have colours that you can’t quite capture on a digital camera. Also, I think having the limitation of 36 shots per roll means that I don’t just shoot off a whole lot of photos on one thing.. .I try to really get it right the first time. I do use my phone a lot when I’m with the girls though, to share photos on Instagram.

Get Alfresco-Ready for a season of Entertaining Now is the perfect time to get your alfresco areas ready for summer barbecues and outdoor relaxation. Timber screening is the perfect all-rounder when it comes to adding practical and aesthetic appeal to your favourite outdoors spaces, so here are our top tips on how to incorporate it in your home. 1. Frame barbecue areas, dining spaces or reading nooks with timber screening to create separate and sheltered spaces.

2. Disguise unsightly walls, fences or neighbours’ sheds with the addition of timber screening built to size. 3. Use timber screening as a base for a feature wall to display herbs or potted colour. 4. Position timber screening alongside a north-facing home office, nursery or bedroom window to help minimise excess sunlight and keep the room cooler in summer.

THE LANGUAGE OF OUR LANDSCAPE Brisbane photographer Kara Rosenlund opens the door to Australia’s beautifully forgotten, well-lived and loved homes. WORDS: EMMA HERON

S

itting down with Kara Rosenlund’s new book ShelterHow Australians Live, I finally put my finger on what it was about her photography that had always enchanted me. After following her work online as a Brisbane-based photographer and stylist (you will remember her photos from the Halcyon House feature in our last issue), it really was this book that finally made my fascination with her images clear. They are sublimely tactile. You feel the warmth from the rusty tin roof of the shack in central Queensland. You hear the lapping of the water against the barnacled jetty on the remote island you’ve never heard of before. Kara doesn’t have to tell you, through her lens she shows you. This book, her first, truly shines a light on Kara – the storyteller– and takes her art from out behind the computer screen and on to your lap where it can be soaked in on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

It only took me one afternoon to drink in the entire book, but I still pick it up and see something new and divine each time I have a quiet moment. Shelter saw Kara invited into the homes of Australians who live authentically Australian. Homes where luxury is not a result of monetary riches, but a deep well of creativity and resourcefulness and an appreciation for the shelter than can be found in nature. For 12 months she drove dirt roads, following a trail of bush whispers that lead her to 24 unique dwellings rich with untold stories. The photographs that came from the journey show that Kara’s eye is caught by what is raw and real in a home, and her ear is pricked by the same in their owners. So used to just watching Kara’s art, this book lets you hear its voice. I pegged Kara down as she travelled the country on her book tour, and she let us in on some of the more memorable days in putting together Shelter and what she bought back

home to Brisbane. Congratulations on the release of your stunning new book. What made you want to hit the road and explore? Being on the road was all about celebrating Australia and the diversity of how we live. I wanted to create something that was reflective of the raw nature of shelters from coast to remote country. I love that you didn’t head off with a set plan for your journey. Can you explain how the trip evolved as you went? Creating Shelter was a project that grew quite exponentially and saw me travelling around the country for a year to produce the book. When I first hit the road, I decided the best way to do it was to ‘fall down the rabbit hole’ and follow it around Australia. Each home I visited led me to have conversations that evolved where I was going to visit next, and everything really evolved in a lovely organic way. u

nm I was driving near the small town of Gunnedah in New South Wales – as a photographer I do a lot of driving around Australia – and I ended up taking a wrong turn down a dirt track and found myself out the front of an old farmhouse, nestled in overgrown bush. The former beauty had fallen into some disrepair, with planks of the veranda falling off, and she was thirsty for a lick of paint. The old house, however, still stood strong; it looked beautiful in the light of the afternoon sun. I wondered, what was the story of the old house? Why didn’t anyone love it anymore? What did it look like inside? I thought about these questions all the way home, for seven hours, as I

drove back up to Brisbane. I had so many thoughts whirling around in my head. Someone needed to document authentic homes like this, which we take for granted. Someone had to get inside and see the interiors influenced by the Australian bush. Someone needed to love these homes. Someone needed to reconnect us with our country’s interiors. They needed to be photographed and celebrated before it was too late, and they crumbled into the earth and disappeared. That somebody ended up being me. “... and when I wasn’t in hot pursuit of authentic interiors to photograph, I was running through paddocks, trespassing and getting zapped by electric fences.”

You have mentioned that you were unearthing “authentic homes” for the book. What is your definition of an authentically Australian home? A home that is at peace with the landscape and wants to be Australian. It listens to the language of the landscape, which in turn dictates a way of life with the climate and colour palette. You are known for your impeccable styling and photography of interiors. Was there any styling involved in the images captured for Shelter or are we seeing untouched homes? No. The authenticity, for me, was in shooting people’s homes as they were and giving people a true glimpse into their life. Changing anything would have taken away from that. You have such a diverse portfolio of photography. What is it about interiors that catches your creative eye? It comes back to my curiosity of how we all live behind closed doors, and I love how intimate those spaces are. The home is such a sacred space and it’s always a privilege to be welcomed into others’ homes. Despite the vast difference in their landscapes, was there any commonality in the homes your visited across Australia? There was a level of resourcefulness

because of how remote some of the homes are, but they all listened to the language of the land around them. That was a common thread - they welcomed the outside inside. Do you have a favourite interior or landscape from the book? What made it stand out? Every home was a favourite. Whenever I would visit I would fall in love with the people and their way of life and many remain lovely friends of mine, who I visit and stay in contact with. In terms of actually picking a favourite, Satellite Island would be it because of the primitive beauty of nature. What was one of your most memorable days in putting the book together? The day after Boxing Day last year I removed absolutely every item out of my lounge room and blew up three printers in the process of printing out all the material for the book. There was A4 paper on every surface and piece of furniture – but this was an important part of the process in bringing all the stories together. Tell me about the types of people you met on your travels. They were very generous people who immediately had an understanding of what I was trying to achieve with this topic of Australia. Like it did for

LIVING | Shelter

While living and working in London as an antiques buyer, Kara helped Madonna restyle her home after her divorce from Guy Ritchie. You have such a knack for making the mundane look exquisitely intriguing. In the book you photographed a dirt road and turned it into art. What was your criteria for what images made it into the book and what was left out? They had to be emotional, they had to come from an emotional place. It was a year of trusting my instincts, and it was important to get emotion into the photographs in order to have something for people to fall in love with. Was there anything you learnt on your travels that you will bring home and incorporate into your home life in Brisbane? A lot actually. Again it’s about embracing the climate of your area. For me in my home, it has always been about having my doors and windows open. I see my native Brisbane and all of its weatherboards and mango trees - and find it quite charming - which I might not have noticed until now. All the tin roofs of the inner-city suburbs are such a contrast and I love it.

You’re used to travelling with Frankie (a restored 1956 Franklin Caravan) with Travelling Wares (a pop-up retail space). Did you stumble across anything while photographing this book that you wish you could add to your inventory? In the chapter Creek Bed, I loved this pair of leather armchairs so much that the owners actually gave them to me.They live with me in Brisbane now and they remind me of the kindness that I was shown.

nm I MET PHOTOGRAPHER BILL MOSELEY AND HIS WIFE, PAINTER AND PRINTMAKER GENEVIEVE CARROLL, IN THE TOWN OF HILL END, NEAR BATHURST. When I arrived, Bill and Genevieve’s home was a hive of rambling energy, with people lunching outside in the sun, ladling soup and breaking bread. Their home, or rather their cluster of small gold-rush cottages, was built in 1872, with each cottage having a separate and distinct purpose. The kitchen, bathroom, living, studio and guest cottages are sprinkled around their garden, quite close together.

We sat down in the kitchen cottage and Genevieve explained their journey. ‘Darling, we traded living on a 1919 wooden ferry on Sydney Harbour for this, which was an absolute ruin, an absolute ruin. Can you imagine it? We had to practically start from scratch.’ The small clusters of cottages hadn’t been lived in for more than 50 years. While they were restoring them, Bill and Genevieve would pull out bundles of old, blackened clothes, previously used for insulation, from the ceilings, all the while looking for signs of life in each of the cottages and trying to understand what they

had been originally used for. The only way to discover the secrets of the cottages was to look for traces of activity – it was like an archaeological dig, uncovering accidental clues like dropped needles and overlooked pins. Together with their friends in Hill End, Bill and Genevieve embarked on a slow journey to restore and conserve their cottages. Even though the gold rush has been mined out decades before, Hill End still possesses great wealth for those brave enough to seek out a slower and more meaningful life.

LIVING | Decluttering

TRANSFORMING YOUR SPACE FROM CHAOTIC TO CALM Are you stufficating – drowning in ‘stuff’– in your home? Organising doesn’t have to be a dreaded task, in fact, it will likely be one of the most rewarding things you have done for yourself this year! WORDS: DONNA DONALDSON PROFESSIONAL ORGANISER & IMAGE CONSULTANT

A

fter years of being a clutter bug, I made the decision to change my habits and turn my home into a tranquil, organised space. I even made a career out of it. I now find more enjoyment and enthusiasm in getting rid of unnecessary stuff than I used to in accumulating it! So now it’s your turn to create the space you want for the New Year. With these decluttering tips, you too can transform your space from chaotic to calm. 1. Keep what you love, use and need Are you programmed to keep stuff because of unrealistic, emotionally loaded reasons like: • It cost me a lot of money • It was a special gift given to me by my mum • I might need it one day Instead, try asking yourself these questions when deciding what stays, and what goes: • Do I really love it? • Do I ever use it? • Do I actually need it? It’s not about “the stuff”, but what sort of space you want to create in your life. 2. One in one out rule To help get on top of having too much stuff, start with the “One in One Out Rule”. Every time you think about bringing something into your home, think about what you are prepared to get rid of to make room for the new item. This way you aren’t stockpiling, rather replacing or upgrading.

HINT: If you need someone to help out with decluttering your space, avoid asking friends or family. These people can share the same emotional attachments to your stuff and make it harder to shift it out. Head to provoke.com.au to find out how Donna can help you get started.

“Don’t own so much clutter that you will be relieved to see your house catch fire.” – Wendell Berry, Farming: a hand book.

3. Finish what you start One of the quickest ways to clutter up your home is to start multiple jobs and not finish them. Do you have baskets or piles of stuff lying around your home – laundry, documents, photos? Try to schedule starting your jobs to allow you enough time to finish them. If you’re going to do the laundry, make sure you allow enough time to wash, dry, and most importantly time to put it away. 4. Like items together Are you guilty of buying multiple items you regularly need but can’t find, like potato peelers, scissors, tweezers, sticky tape, black T-shirts? Always put your like items together so it’s easy to find what you are looking for. Why not create a stationery drawer? This reduces the need to buy multiples, and saves on space and money. 5. Maximise prime real estate Imagine having everything that you need in your home at your fingertips and your cupboards all in order. It’s really not that hard to achieve! Start by working out what is the Prime Real Estate in your kitchen cupboards – these are the areas that are easiest for you to access. Put the things you

need and use the most together in your Prime Real Estate and the things you use the least in the harder to get at places. 6. Set up preparation areas as work stations Are you frustrated with going from one end of the house to the other to find all of the things you need to complete one task? By having work stations you can simplify the process, reduce stress and save time. Have a preparation station with everything you need in one area. An easy one to start with is a tea and coffee station, to make mornings less of a stress by having all the main items you use together. 7. The three clutter monsters: clothes, papers, toys Kill the monster while it’s small. It is the best cure for taming the worst offenders. Small tasks can bring great satisfaction. Start with cleaning out your handbag, or a drawer. I find that filing papers on a horizontal surface only invites an invasion of a whole family of papers. For the kids, create a designated play area where the toys are sorted into like items. Putting toys into containers makes it easy for the kids to put them back.

ONLINE GETS HANDS-ON Showroom might be one of the most tranquil spaces nestled within the hubbub of Brisbane’s CBD, but behind its calm exterior is a flurry of savvy artisans recreating the way we shop. WORDS: EMMA HERON

O

nline shopping is convenient, but traipsing through Showroom will have you declaring your undying love for the hands-on retail experience. Wistfully cocooned inside a heritage downtown loft at 104 Edward St, the store is an entirely new and entirely beautiful concept that bridges the gap between online and retail. Showroom’s shelves are artistically laden with the wares of popular and burgeoning web-based designers so Catherine’s idea of design perfection: that shoppers can get tactile with their Falcon Enamel Mug, RRP $7.95, online loves. I started out blogging when I first Aside from being online in real life, moved to Australia almost five years Showroom is a hub “where creatives ago, having met my Brisbane-born and design lovers meet”. Why do you think it’s important to preserve the traditional shopfront? Because there is no substitute for ‘the real world’ and I don’t think the point of digital is actually to replace actual experience, only to enhance it. It’s clear to me that our consumer brains have been rewired by the internet and social media; we’re more design literate, more selective, our appetite for content has grown, we’re more attuned to the stories brands tap into to give their products meaning, and we’re more invested in how our own identities as individuals and members of particular communities are shaped by them. I’m interested in how we can amplify the best of these trends and deliver a heightened experience in a space where we as living, breathing humans gather. When you’re sourcing products and brands to stock, what do you look for? Curation and a strong point of view are paramount to Showroom’s success. I have a clear sense of how I want the store to look and feel, and I seek out artisans, brands and products that fit my vision. We’re not to everyone’s taste, certainly, but people who love what’s presented in store and online love it in its totality, and that’s what I’m going for. To be honest, I make most decisions about the editorial content of Showroom on the basis of what I personally like and the stories behind the people who make the things. Your all-time favourite homewares designer? I’m too eclectic to have one favourite! I like to take pieces from here and there – my favourite places to shop for my own home are antique markets. Who would be your ultimate guestcurator to work with? Kara Rosenlund. She has such a magical way of styling object together - no one vignettes better than Kara! Check out our feature on Kara and her new book on pages 98-104. You’re a professional historian. How do these skills transfer to your work with Showroom? As a historian, I’m a lover of stories with a soft spot for nostalgia. Although history may seem like an unlikely background for a retail entrepreneur, researching and teaching about the past enhanced my natural curiosity and honed my inclination to seek meaning and connection in ideas, relationships and material objects. What’s next for Showroom? More sourcing beautiful product from cool local brands. More designing and manufacturing exclusive ranges for the shop. More workshops and events to support Brisbane’s incredible community of creative entrepreneurs. Expansion of the online store. And hopefully more time away from the shop for me so I can get back to more blogging and photography.

Catherine’s wise words for aspiring business owners: 1. Listen to your gut instinct, even if what it’s saying is inconvenient. 2. Be direct with your team. Giving negative feedback doesn’t feel good, but you have to communicate your expectations and preferences clearly to enable the people who work for you to do a great job. Failing to let them know when things haven’t been done the way you need them to be does everyone a disservice. 3. Get proper advice straight away. Get an accountant, a lawyer, set up a proper system for doing things.

ULTRA HIGH-END LIVING BANC-ED The bespoke, sophisticated Brisbane development, where the wine cellar does the talking. WORDS: EMMA HERON

I

t’s not every day that your fantasy apartment is realised. When your lofty list of must-haves includes one of those fancy lifts that opens right into your home, a place dedicated solely to the drinking of wine, a podiumlevel-infinity-edge pool, and a location that delivers the perfect balance of action and retreat, you kind of know that you’re asking a bit. And yet here it is. Banc. A superluxury riverfront tower on Coronation Drive by prestige residential developer and chief wish-granter Ideal Property Australia. The two-tower Banc development will fill a hole on Coronation Drive as the last infill site in the precinct. So essentially, it will become the chocolatey morsel that they pour into the end of the Cornetto cone. Usually it is at this point when the residents of the surrounding and existing apartments kick up a stink about their blocked views and the jarring design of the newcomer; but Banc is harmony defined. Banc has been designed by multi-award-winning WMK Architecture, and Director of Practice, Russell Grady, is a friend to thy neighbour. To begin with, he incorporated a single-level entry and basement carpark to present a homogenous and consistent street frontage to Coronation Drive. “The site has been purposefully underdeveloped to appeal to its own exclusive market, but also to lessen any loss of amenity to its neighbours,” Mr Grady said. Perhaps Sunland and its controversial 25-floor champagne flute towers should take note. But enough about what the neighbours get, what do future Bancers get? Traditionally, apartment dwellers get to sacrifice space, share space, and constantly try to make more space. But Banc is ultra high-end, and high-end is by definition exclusive. There are only 33 units across 15 levels at Banc so even the space has space. “The feeling is that Banc will get a lot of people who are looking to downsize from places like

Pullenvale,” Mr Grady said. “People who will sell their acreage when the kids have moved out, and they’re still executives in the city so they want to move closer; but the place still has to be large enough that they can maintain the lifestyle that they had. Rather than trying to drag 200 units into the site, it was better to stick to a lower yield and a much higher quality product.” As a result, the 15-level tower will feature a range of floorplans ranging in size from 105sqm up to a massive 455sqm (I’ll tell you about the Sky Mansion in a bit), all offering panoramic river and city views. Mr Grady nailed the fantasy apartment description again when he said Banc “will offer the openness and expansiveness of the Brisbane River, while still providing the solitude and shelter of its banks”. Want to know how they will do it? With a lift that opens straight into your apartment! “We tried to adopt a different model whereby you would come out of the lift and enter directly into your unit. The ultimate luxury. This also creates a secondary area in the house that becomes a multi-purpose room. Coronation Drive is out there and exposed, and while you have great views, we wanted to also give people a retreat if they want to get away from being exposed. That new area formed the heart of the unit, which everything else then wrapped around.” Creating this “ultimate luxury” brought with it the greatest challenge faced by Mr Grady and his team of architects. “We were essentially creating a whole new product type – an apartment building, split into two towers, with direct lift access to every apartment. Normally you get out of the lift and enter into a lobby with doors to 12 different apartment. The challenge was in getting everyone’s head into what we were trying to create and away from the stock standard. We had to convince everyone to take that leap with us.” And thank goodness everyone leapt, because Banc is now one of Summer 2015/16 115

the only boutique offerings of this type in Brisbane. To give you the rundown on your selection of swanky apartments, at podium level there are two Garden Homes, each featuring three bedrooms, two living rooms, 12-metre frontages and exclusive access to large private gardens and outdoor living spaces. Above on levels two to five are 12 River Homes comprising a selection of two and three-bedroom apartments and with views across the river. Eighteen Sky Homes will span levels six to 14 – all configured only two per floor – and each boasting three bedrooms, two living rooms, a butler’s pantry, a 34sqm terrace and 12-metre frontage with stunning vistas of the city. Then there is the Sky Mansion. This is the fantasy. This is the one you want. This palatial residence is a genuine fullfloor penthouse customised precisely to your preferences. The apartment sprawls over 455sqm and offers five bedrooms, three living rooms and a study. That sounds pretty divine, but heck, throw in a library, not one but two 34sqm terraces, and a formal dining room too. Want panoramic views in all directions? You’ve got it. Now that you know what your own private paradise offers up, let’s talk shared spaces. Stop one, the wine cellar and tasting room. Jump into the lift straight from your apartment, hit wine cellar, and be transported to your own world of

wine-made wonders. Mr Grady even went so far as to sacrifice a few parking spots so that this showstopper could be located in the basement of the building. He also made the clever decision to keep the cellar and tasting rooms separate. “We wanted to create this space that you could book out and have some wine tasting down there and it is separated from where all the wine would be stored. So if someone is rocking down at two in the morning in their pyjamas to get a bottle of wine, they’re not interrupting whatever function might be happening.” Mr Grady, you speak my language. If you ever leave the wine cellar, my suggestion would be to head to your infinity-edge podium pool. Hungry? Try the accompanying barbecue terrace set amid lush subtropical gardens and cascading stair water features. Even with all of this luxury, Mr Grady says it is Banc’s exoskeleton that tops his list of impressive features. “What we were trying to do was pick up on some of the language of the river. We’re near the truss-styled bridges and then there is the Story Bridge and the ferry stops, so what we’re trying to pick up is an external frame that wraps and embraces the building so even though you are 12 or 25 storeys up, you will always have these arms wrapping around you. It has a nice rhythm to it and isn’t over the top, but still gives a real identity to the building. The clients wanted it to be an

iconic site.” Summed up in three words, Grady says Banc is sophisticated, elegant and uncompromised. While I bow down to WMK for their phenomenal architecture at Banc, hats are most certainly off to interior magicians SJB Interiors. The lobby is stunning with its elegant treatment of natural timber curved walls and a sunken stone lounge area. But, it is the apartment interiors that are the real winners. SJB director Jonathan Richards said the intent was to bring a whole new level of luxury and detail to apartment living in Brisbane, and they did this by providing variety. There are two finishes palettes to the interiors. My favourite makes the most of a soft aesthetic of sandy colours with natural textures and is punctuated with aged brass detailing. The other, and my other favourite, is characterised by cool grey tones and a striking dark charcoal kitchen. Both have a sumptuous richness of material and texture, and a balance of matte detailing with reflective metal highlights. The apartments are modern and chic while at all

times maintaining a sense of homeliness. In both schemes, the rough textural finishes are complemented with crisp elegant detailing of natural stone benches, timber ceilings, aged brass accents, mirrored surfaces and sophisticated kitchen joinery bedazzled with Gaggenau appliances. In Mr Richards’ words, it’s a classic contemporary style within a building of matching sophistication. There will come a time when you have to leave your palace at Banc, even if just to go to work. This is when you will discover that the private residents’ foyer has direct pedestrian connection to Coronation Drive, which provides immediate access to the Regatta Ferry Terminal, Riverside Bicentennial Bikeway and nearby Toowong Village’s cafes, restaurants and shopping. If you’re still not sold, well here is the clincher – pets allowed.

SHOULD MEDICINAL CANNABIS BE AVAILABLE TO ALL? It’s the plant that has provided more fodder for comedians and entire film franchises than most others, yet it’s the medicinal properties of cannabis that have many shouting its praise. After decades of demonisation it seems Australia is finally ready to embrace medicinal cannabis for the terminally ill, but what about those in chronic daily pain? WORDS: JAS RAWLINSON

F

or the thousands of Australians who suffer from chronic pain disorders and terminal medical conditions, severe pain is a horrible daily reality, driving many to develop depression and serious addictions to prescribed pain medication. For many, these legal alternatives neither improve their quality of life, nor heal the condition, and the endless popping of prescriptions can take a severe toll

on both emotional and physical health. Recent research (Palliative Care Australia) found more than two-thirds of Australians now back the use of medical marijuana, with just 9 per cent in opposition, so why is it taking so long? It seems reasonable to think that the Government would welcome a natural alternative that’s been proven to relieve the suffering of terminally and chronically ill patients (while restoring their appetite, energy and –

in some cases – even decreasing their tumours) yet the medical legalisation progress has been painfully slow. And while it’s a small step in the right direction that the Federal Government and Victorian Health Department have both vowed to legalise medicinal cannabis by 2017, and hospitals such as Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital plan to host Queensland’s first trials for children with drug-resistant epilepsy, this is still too far away for

those suffering right now. And what about those who suffer from extreme and daily chronic pain, but are not terminally ill? As many have come to discover over the years, it’s not just cancer patients who are benefiting from medicinal cannabis: from epilepsy seizures and chemotherapy treatment, to endometriosis, back pain and serious injuries, it’s amazing how many health conditions can be treated with just one plant. Unfortunately, however, those who find relief with cannabis must also deal with the stress of knowing that in order to relieve their suffering they must break the law. At present, there has been no word on legalisation for those who have been condemned to pain that has no time frame. United in Compassion founder Lucy Haslam, who has been championing a push for medicinal cannabis since her late-son Dan was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer, believes that 2017 is too far away. She also believes that medicinal cannabis needs to be extended to those who are chronically ill, and has seen with her own eyes the difference it can make to someone’s dignity and quality of life. “I met a lady from Tasmania who had Multiple Sclerosis; she was

planning to commit suicide [because of her low quality of life],” she told me. “[A friend of hers] made some [cannabis] tincture and convinced her to take it rather than commit suicide, and when I saw her next she was fully mobile and had thrown away her walking sticks and walking frame. She was going to be renovating the house! This was a lady in her 60s…,” she said. “I want to get to the situation where people don’t have to rely on the black market; where people can know what they’re actually taking... Where it’s tested for quality and purity – which is what they do in a lot of countries like Israel.” One Australian who is currently caught in this predicament is a young woman named ‘Kate’, who recently shared her story with Provoke in the hope that she can help people better understand the positive impacts of cannabis when used medicinally. Having suffered for the past 15 years with severe stomach issues, migraines, endometriosis (which both male and female doctors have told her is no big deal and she should just ‘take a panadol’), and an undiagnosed nausea condition that saw her unable to eat a main meal without vomiting (or at times, even drink water) for almost a year, Kate has exhausted every legal avenue for pain relief, with no success. “I have been on countless diets and had much testing over the years,” she said, “but the doctors always end up baffled and give up on me without an answer. There was one year I thought I would die. I lived mostly on mushy foods and health shakes to sustain me. Nobody could give me an answer, and most brushed it off like it was in my head or some kind of eating disorder. Believe me, it’s not. My friends know I love food when I am well. There are many times when I can get by, forcefeeding myself and drinking vitamin shakes. But that’s hardly living. It has been going on for so long that I can function, and appear normal quite a number of hours, without anyone knowing. I control my breathing, distract myself and use my willpower, getting by on liquid meals. What they don’t realise is that by the time I get home I am shakey and often end up crying out of pain, frustration, nausea and hunger.” While living overseas in a country where medicinal cannabis was legal, Kate one day decided to try it for herself. She was surprised and overjoyed to find that there was something other than sedatives (which condemn her to bedrest) that helped with her health issues. “My housemates have witnessed the dramatic effect [to my quality of life] themselves,” says Kate. “Many mornings I will be miserable, carrying

a bucket with me around the house (just in case) to spit and dry heave into, but within 10 minutes of using the green, I am back to being able to laugh and hold a conversation as the nausea declines. If I’m lucky, in a few hours it will settle enough for me to eat. It’s not 100% foolproof, but it sure as hell beats everything else that I have ever tried to deal with this condition. “I’ve also found that it helps with my migraines, which used to be chronic and now are much less common... and also helps lift my mood – as one can imagine constant nausea can be quite depressing.” Since returning to Australia, however, she has been forced to either continue suffering, or take her quality of life into her own hands, a painful decision that leaves her feeling like a criminal. Some days she cries, racked with guilt as she vapes the medicine that will help her to go a day without throwing up. “Many days I don’t use, but by the evening I am starving – yet nauseated – and won’t be able to eat properly without it,” she explains, frustrated. “This taboo ‘drug’, I believe, has kept me alive when modern medicine failed me.” Kate’s story is just one of thousands across our country, and for those who are silently suffering in this very moment, cannabis is not a party drug to unwind and have fun; it is a natural remedy that allows the chance for some sort of quality of life. Like any drug, cannabis should be regulated, grown at the highest quality by professionals and prescribed responsibly, but it must happen and it must happen soon. Lucy Haslam agrees. “I think we do need a tightly regulated system, but I think that is completely doable. I think Australia has to [get on board] or they’re going to start to look really bad if they don’t.” While the Federal Government and Victorian Health Department have both vowed to legalise medicinal cannabis by 2017, and hospitals such as Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital plan to host Queensland’s first trials for children with drug-resistant epilepsy, the rules around who will be able to access medicinal cannabis is at present still too limited. Those in agony and constant pain shouldn’t be made to feel like criminals for simply yearning for some sort of quality of life.
