The Rolling

The Rolling Stones came into being in 1962 when former schoolmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met Brian Jones. Bill Wyman joined the band shortly after, and Charlie Watts joined the Stones in January 1963 as their new permanent drummer.

It was Brian who named their new group after the title of the Muddy Waters’ song “Rollin’ Stone”.

In June of 1963, the Stones released their first single, a Chuck Berry tune, “Come On.” The group performed on the British TV show “Thank Your Lucky Stars,” where the producer told manager Andrew Loog Oldham to get rid of “that vile-looking singer with the tire-tread lips.”

The first Stones albums were mostly covers, like the album The Rolling Stones which made the Stones a teen idol group.

The Beatles were still suited, clean-cut boys with mop-top haircuts, but the Stones cultivated the opposite image: decidedly unkempt, like a gang of surly yobs. This made girls go crazy for their bad boy image.

On their second album, The Rolling Stones No. 2 , their manager locked Jagger/Richards into a room and refused to let them out until they had written something they could release. Their first “big” hit came later in 1964 with “Time Is on My Side”.

On June 30, 1965, the Stones released the album Out of Our Heads which contained the classic “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”.

It wasn’t until “Satisfaction” that the group entered its “hit-making” stride in the US. Jones retreated into drug abuse, leaving to Jagger and Richards to do most of the song writing. Aftermath, released in 1966, continued the progression consisting entirely of Jagger/Richards compositions.

The Rolling

In February 1967, one of the most notorious episodes in Rolling Stones history occured: the drugs bust at Keith Richard’s Sussex home.

Following a tip-off from the UK tabloid newspaper, News of the World, the house was raided by 20 police officers from the Drugs Squad. The trial ended with both Stones being found guilty. Richards received a one-year prison sentence and a £500 fine.

Jagger received a three-month prison term and a £200 fine. Following an appeal, their sentences were reduced and both received a conditional discharge.

In May 1968, they released the single “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and, later that year, the album Beggars Banquet.

Despite the tension between the band and Jones and Richards, Jagger and Richards produced some of their most memorable work, and the Stones entered the phase that would see them billed as “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.”
