SES to CFA’s rescue Symes y confident SES can accommodate soon to be homeless CFA Group p
WANGARATTA SES could still come to the rescue of the ‘homeless’ CFA Wangaratta Group, after Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes threw her support behind the group being accommodated at the SES’s $1.6m Handley Street SES headquarters. temporary base in Ely Street when the Wangaratta District 23 Incident Control Centre moves back there ahead of this summer. Recent discourse between the two local emergency services groups has resulted
in concerns about the CFA group’s ability to access the headquarters without express permission from the local SES group. Speaking in front of the Legislative Council this week, Northern Victoria MP Wendy Lovell confronted Ms Symes over a lack of clarity for the long-term residency prospects of the Wangaratta Group. “Last week’s state
budget was particularly disappointing to CFA brigades in District 23 as it contained no funding to refurbish the incident control centre at the Ely Street district headquarters or to provide a dedicated home for a headquarters for the Wangaratta Group,” she said. “The CFA are pushing ahead with the refurbishment of the
control centre through their own limited funds, but this will effectively displace the Wangaratta Group from the Ely Street headquarters, leaving them homeless.” Ms Symes said there had been considerable support for the local CFA plight, with both Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy and Wangaratta-based state MP Tania Maxwell also writing
to express their concerns. According to Ms Symes, finding a suitable home in the short-term for the Wangaratta Group was a key priority, with their permanent residency to be addressed at a later date. “I understand that there may be some members who are looking for a different outcome or a long-term solution,” she said. ■ Continued page 3
