MODERN cars may get us around, but there is a certain kind of charm exuded by the automobiles of yesteryear, and a sense of achievement to be found in restoring them to their former glory. There are many car enthusiast groups of different kinds dotted across the North East, but among the newer groups on the scene are Myrtleford’s Chopped and Changed Kustom Car Club Inc and Beechworth’s Greazy Fingers Custom Car Club Inc. For Alby Barton, who hails from Myrtleford and is part of the Chopped and Changed group, his 1952 Armstrong-Siddeley and 1975 Daimler are his pride and joy. He is one of the founding members of the car club, which has been going for about two years, and his involvement with cars goes all the way back to age 14, when he started an apprenticeship as a mechanic. It was a career he continued to pursue for another 51 years. “I’ve been playing with cars for a long time,” he said. “It’s something to keep me off the street and out of the pub.”
