NO MORE SEDANS: Sleek and stylish, but definitely in the family-car class. The all-new Holden ZB Commodore.
The All-New
Holden ZB Commodore HOLDEN began modifying German cars and renaming them ‘Commodore’ in the mid 1970s and launched the first model, the VB, in 1978. Later models had an ever increasing Australian content and grew in size. Now the clock has been reset and an all-new model, the ZB Commodore, is being made in Russelsheim Germany. It’s marginally smaller than the last Aussiemade VF II Commodore, but still very much a full-size family car. Importantly, the ZB has significant changes made by Australian engineers to tailor it not only Australia’s harsh driving conditions, but also the particular likes of our drivers.
By EWAN KENNEDY Visually, ZB Commodore does look smaller than the VF II when you see them side by side. But that’s due to the sleeker lines of the new car. Controversially, the ZB is sold only as a five-door Liftback hatch or Sportwagon, there is no sedan. Importantly, the ZB Commodore is built on an all-new architecture and is about 200 kg lighter than the VF. Making for more performance and lower fuel consumption. New Commodore is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with 191 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque.
The V6 engine also drives through a nine-speed automatic. In another first for a Commodore there’s also a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine. MODELS ZB Commodore is sold in a large variety of models, including the Calais which technically not called a Commodore. Note that only the major features are listed here, for full details consult your dealer or Holden’s website. (prices are in a separate table). Commodore LT: 2.0-litre engine 17-inch alloy wheels; GM’s MyLink infotainment system; a power adjustable driver’s seat and significant safety systems.
It drives the front wheels through a ninespeed automatic transmission. The 3.6-litre V6 engine (230 kW / 370 Nm) almost didn’t make it into the Opel Insignia during the earliest stages of its design. It was only when Holden engineers and marketers explained to the Europeans that Aussies love this sort of car that it was added to the program. So great is the torque from this engine that it could have overpowered the front wheels when pushed hard off the line. So all-wheel-drive was added to the equation. Audi has had a tremendous amount of success with its quattro allwheel-drive high-performance models so its great to see Holden take this route.
