Australia Day was a time to reflect, respect and celebrate By LYNN ELDER RAIN cleared off in time for more than 300 people to support our newest Australian citizen and the winners of the Mansfield Shire citizen and community group awards at the official Australia Day event in the Botanic Park last Friday morning. Many in the crowd were showing their loyalty to Australia with their flags and choice of attire for the free event organised by council. Before the formal proceedings began, there was a complementary barbecue breakfast cooked by various Mansfield Rotary Club members which was much appreciated. Australia Day awards were presented across five categories, with: Cathy Raeburn, Citizen of the Year; Karen Pirie, Senior Citizen of the Year; Amelie Walker, Young Citizen of the Year; Pottery Festival, Community Event of the Year; and Delatite Car Club, Community Group or Organisation. Ms Raeburn was nominated in recognition of her selfless work in
providing care and assistance to our local wildlife when injured and in need of help. Ms Pirie is regarded widely as a wonderful community asset and was nominated in recognition of her contribution to the Mansfield Shire community over the past 35 years as a volunteer with various organisations, such as the CFA, Jamieson Community Group, MACE, MMuDS, the hospital , Jamieson Farmers & Artisan Market and many more. Ms Walker, who has just finished year 12 with outstanding results, was considered a great ambassador for Mansfield’s young people. The Pottery Festival was well supported in its first year and the Delatite Car Club hosted a great event and fundraiser in 2023. Mayor Rabie congratulated the award recipients and nominees and commended their contributions, commitment, and valued work within the community. “We are so lucky to have people that are truly dedicated to their community, and these awards are our

way of recognising their contributions and achievements,” he said. Award winners were selected by the Australia Day Awards judging panel comprising Cr Rabie, Cr James Tehan, Cr Mark Holcombe, and last year’s Citizen of the Year Cathie Smith and Senior Citizen of the Year Marie Sellstrom. The MC for the event Cr Mark Holcombe provided a welcome and included an acknowledgement of country. This was followed by a speech delivered by Mayor Cr Steve Rabie who referred to “a sense of a fair go, the lifestyle, democracy and freedoms we enjoy” and that “we are indeed the lucky country”. Then there was the arrival of the flags by the High Country horsemen and women on horseback, a reminder of Mansfield’s origins. The flag raising ceremony was conducted the Mansfield Cubs, Scouts and Girl Guides. This year was also the second year that there has been an Australian Day Ambassador: Judah

Keheller recently appointed as the 2024 school captain at the Mansfield Secondary College provided a well-received speech and a young person’s perspective. “Doesn’t matter if you are First Nation, or descended from settlers, or a child migrant or migrated to Australia or first generation Australian, we are all part of Australia’s history,” he said. Judah said he once thought of Australia Day as a good time to go to the lake and down a snag. “I admire people who have to work to earn their citizenship, I was lucky, I was just born here,” he said. As part of the Australia Day ceremony Agatha Pronk from the Netherlands was welcomed as our newest Australian citizen in a ceremony officiated by Cr Rabie. State MP for Eildon, Cindy McLeish congratulated Mansfield for putting on a great celebration and the community interaction that makes it such a great place to live. ■ More Australia Day coverage on pages 5 to 9 and page 12.
