her fourth term still the clear favourite, picking another 1.7 per cent swing this election, giving her a 48.4 per cent share of first preference votes, almost a full 20 per cent more than

her nearest competitor Jane Judd, from Labor, who took 28.8 per cent.

“It was pleasing to see,” Ms McLeish told the Mansfield Courier on Monday morning.

“I have worked hard for the whole four years - and that was through COVID, then we had the floods during the campaign.

“But I think people know that I do work hard and am a loud voice for the community - and that just makes it rewarding and encouraging for me.

“Thank you to the very many people who have supported me.

“I know even those that haven’t voted for me have still been supportive of me,

and I’m really pleased that I have gained that much trust with the community.

“So I am really conscious to make sure I represent everybody, regardless of their political affiliation.”

Despite it being a time of celebration in her office, the state-wide results as a whole certainly haven’t favoured her.

“As a whole, it is a bit of doom and gloom,” McLeish admitted.

Similar to Eildon, neighbouring electorates Euroa and Ovens also turned out landslide victories for the Coalition.

“Regional Victoria clearly has different ideas on how this government is going,” she said.

King Saddle partly re-opens THE large bog hole on Mt Stirling’s Circuit Road between Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) and King Saddle Shelter was repaired and the road was re-opened on Friday, November 11.

However, a further landslip and large subsidence on the Circuit Road between TBJ and Howqua Gap has meant that this part of the Circuit Road will remain closed to all traffic until repairs have been arranged and completed.

“Repairs on this section of the Circuit Road are likely to take some time but we are hopeful that this part of the Circuit Rd can be open before the Christmas holidays,” Environmental Services/ Mt Stirling Operations Manager, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Louise Perrin said.

The bog holes were caused by the heavy rains over the past two months.

Ms Perrin said it was unfortunate the subsidences

were so large there is not enough pavement left for vehicles to safely pass.

She said recently there were many land slips across the roads on Mt Stirling and VicRoads, working with Buller staff and contractors had managed to get Stirling Road trafficable up to TBJ. “We are working as fast as we can to get these fixes done but with more rain expected, it may not happen,” she said.

“There is a huge amount

of repair work to be done on many of the bush roads.

“When visiting please be sensible, thoughtful and pan ahead; check social media, websites, plan as best you can if you still intend to come on up.”

The standard seasonal closure of the tracks accessing the summit of Mt Stirling (Howqua Gap Track, Summit Track and the top of Clear Hills Track) are expected to open as usual tomorrow (Thursday, December 1).

MILLIONS of dollars of repairs to North East roads damaged by flooding events is set to commence in the coming weeks, as Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) enters the next phase of its flood recovery program.

More than half of the state’s $89.8m statewide program will be funneled into the Hume region, with $45m to be set aside for major works on the Hume and Goulburn Valley freeways, as well as the Midland, Melba and Murray Valley highways.

In Mansfield town Ms McLeish was slightly lower with 47 per cent of the vote, 46 per cent in Tolmie and 42 per cent in Merrijig.

In total across the Eildon electorate, there were 31876 formal votes, with 15437 going to MS McLeish and 9189 going to Ms Judd.

After preferences, Ms McLeish drew 18396 votes, winning with a landslide 57.72 per cent.

Regional gallery hosts local photography art

MANSFIELD’S Sarah Maslankiewicz creates photographic art which embraces the human form and deals with body image in a powerful but beautiful way, as her current Wangaratta art exhibition ‘Head in the Clouds’ portrays.

This series of new works continues Sarah’s experimentation of photographing the human body in water, and capturing various movements using refracted light and swirling fabrics reminiscent of paintings by the old masters.

“Some of the most iconic works in art history held up an impossibly ideal image of beauty.”

“Today, we grapple with the perfect pictures we see in the media, just as these classic paintings must once have provoked,” Sarah explains.

She also admits to being obsessed with Greek mythology, a theme picked up in several of her works.

Sarah described how the ‘nephelai spirits’ who carried water to the heavens in pitchers made of clouds were usually depicted as beautiful young women dancing across the sky with billowing dresses.

“By broadening our awareness of early representations of the human form, we can see how we still live with their legacy,” she said.

Sarah’s love of photography began at a young age, and it eventually led her to complete an Advanced Diploma in Photography (Art Major) at Photography Studies College in Melbourne in 2015.

“I chose art because I wanted to challenge myself.

“Art can be self-obsessed and quite personal.”

Sarah really struggled with others’ artistic works when it did not fit with her belief that “art is meant to be beautiful”.

Since graduating she has collected several national and international photographic awards.

Her first exhibition ‘What Dreams May Come’ was staged in 2015 at the Yarra Sculpture Gallery in Abbotsford.

Growing up on the central Queensland coast, Sarah’s fascination and connection to water was a normal part of life.

She has used water as a key element in her photographic work and combined it with the beauty of the naked body in all its various shapes and sizes, male and female, young and old.

For these works to come to

fruition, Sarah relied on her friends, family, and colleagues to be the subjects, and prepared to writhe around naked in a heated swimming pool, lighting them with a car battery-operated light.

Her approach utilises a painterly effect that is both natural and utterly beguiling at the same time.

A move to Mansfield with her husband and two children in 2016 followed a 20-year career working in administration with Channel 9.

The family moved from their home in Kinglake, which miraculously was left untouched by the Black Saturday fires while they were away on holidays.

Creating meaningful and beautiful photography is still a priority for Sarah, although challenging managing a family and other work commitments.

to shoot in a dark because everything is lit below the water.

Since the closure of the privately-owned Mansfield indoor pool facility, Sarah is on the lookout out for a suitable alternative.

She is currently working on a new exhibition ‘What Lies Beneath’ and is keen to hear from anyone who is willing to be a model.

For those who are involved it is like art therapy.

Sarah had a friend who was hesitant and uncomfortable about seeing herself in the finished works.

Afterwards the friend commented, “I see me now how you see me” which is testament to the artistic values of Sarah’s photography.

The exhibition which opened to the public on September 21 will run to December 14 at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre (WPACC) Foyer Gallery, corner of Ford and Ovens Streets.

Trees falling left, right, and centre

By SHAUN McMAHON IT WAS a close call for a Mansfield resident when a large tree fell down on top of his home on Griffin Avenue last week.

The gum tree flanking Highett Street fell across the service road around 3PM last Monday afternoon, crashing through the roof of the brick house.

Police, SES and tree workers attended the scene.

A neighbour said the man, who was inside his home at the time the tree fell, “was okay but a bit shaken up.”

Works continued at the property in the following days, with the local SES tarping up the roof after the damage was assessed and the fallen tree was removed.

“It would have been a very frightening experience for him,” said Mansfield SES Unit Controller Tom Thoburne.

“It was a big tree and there’s a number in the area that could have come down;

“We’ve been to some landslides and other tree jobs; a

tree on the Whitfield Road, a tree a blocking a driveway on Malcolm St, a tree and a landslide near Jamieson,” said Mr Thoburne.

“There was also a tree in Reynolds St, a large citrus tree, which just decided to

break off.

“It was rotten and came down on back side of a rental property.

“It damaged part of a bedroom and passageway, tiles were broken, and it was unsafe for occupancy.”

Mr Thoburne said he hadn’t experienced anything like the recent weather events and that the effects of the recent rainfall were visible on the job.

“What I see at the base of a tree when it’s gone over,

the root system is just below the ground, and the water table has really come up to about 300mm beneath the surface,” said Mr Thoburne.

“With the trees that have a lot of weight up top, with all the moisture, if one has a lean or there’s a strong wind, they’re just going over left, right and centre, and at the base of the tree you can see all this water.

“A lot of these trees appear healthy, but when they go over, there’s just nothing holding them up.”

Mr Thoburne added that on the bright side, there had been no injured people or fatalities so far, and that the local community has been listening to their messaging and staying safe.

“People have been listening to wind winds warnings and storm warnings, staying inside until it’s cleared,” he said.

“We’re really happy with the community taking notice of our messaging.”

Cash coming for community groups SAFETY CHECK

By SHAUN McMAHON CASH is on the way for a few community groups after council unanimously endorsed an assessment panel recommendation to fund $50,000 worth of projects within the shire.

The Outlying Communities Infrastructure Fund received four grant applications, three of which were successful in this round of funding.

The Bonnie Doon Community Group will receive $20,000 towards the Billy’s House project.

The Jamieson Art and Gardens (JAGs) under the auspice of the Jamieson and District Historical Society will receive $10,000 towards JAGs relocation to St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

And the Merton Community Planning Committee under the auspice of the Merton Recreation and Memorial Hall Reserves Incorporated are set to get $20,000 towards the Merton Community Skate Park.

While the Matlock Cemetery Trust’s application for $11,000 towards a shelter and interpretative information for visitors to

$85 the cemetery was unsuccessful, Cr Steve Rabie said that he was personally happy to see their application, and encouraged them not to feel despondent as the panel noted the value of this project for the community and will work with them to find alternative grant opportunities.

Cr Rohan Webb said he was incredibly excited to see these applications get up in the latest round of funding.

“Each group has come along in leaps and strides, putting in

well thought out grant applications,” said Cr Webb.

“Particularly Merton, who have been actively pushing council to develop their community plan.

“I was at the meeting where this started and it’s great to see an item on their wish list kick off through this grant.”

Cr Mark Holcombe echoed these sentiments.

“From a personal perspective, I just want to acknowledge the importance of this fund, that it’s

community driven, and has nothing to do with council,” he said.

“It comes from community, and I believe the truly successful projects come from when community is driving it.”

Coordinator Community Development at Mansfield Shire, Clare Berghofer added that the community had really engaged in their own areas, and after a tricky time, had really come together and provided positive feedback with regards to this grant.

Christmas for eveyone

WE love our magpies, but right now the adolescent birds are finishing up squashed on the roads.

Unlike many birds, magpie young have to learn that cars are dangerous.

They leave their escape flight too late as the cars bear down on them.

Being newly fledged they are slow and unsteady in their flight.

Often their escape path is across the road rather than to the side.

Being intelligent birds, they will learn that cars are a danger and to stay safely on the side of the road.

They are helped when we toot the horn to scare them off and when we drive more slowly, particularly in the last light of the day when they hold family meetings on the shoulder of the road.

THE Rotary club of Mansfield are an amazing group.

We had a working bee at a house on November 16 for a deserving single lady; 12 Rotary members turning up with mowers, whipper snippers, and brush cutters.

An amazing amount of work was done in two hours including grass mown, trees trimmed, gardens mulched and long grass removed from around the fence line, much of which had seen extra growth due to the heavy rains.

Helpers included Mick McCormack, Ray Findlay, John Cios, Laurie Tanner, Roger Chestney, Bob Prosser, Len Souter, Shane O’Brien, Pete Lunn and of course the beautiful Kath Croughan and Robyn Bassanelli.

UPGRADES: New lakeside picnic facilities are now open for Goughs Bay locals and visitors to enjoy as a key component of the streetscape upgrade project is completed.

Goughs Bay gets some needed upgrades NEW lakeside picnic facilities are now open for Goughs Bay locals and visitors to enjoy as a key component of the streetscape upgrade project is completed.

Facilities installed at the open space at the intersection of Main Street and Bayside Boulevard include a shelter, public BBQ and durable, eco-friendly picnic settings transforming the space into a more attractive and functional area.

New picnic settings have also been installed at the General Store and opposite the Caravan Park.

The recreational space on the lake shore will continue to be improved with drainage reconstruction and beautification works to open up the view of Lake Eildon.

Council worked closely with the Goughs Bay Progress Association (GBAPA) to consider projects that could be included in a plan that would improve

the streetscape and cater for the unique needs of the Goughs Bay community.

Consultation with the community identified that picnic tables and the enhancement of open space was a priority to reflect the town’s character, add amenity and to beautify the area.

Mayor Cr James Tehan thanked the GBAPA for advocating for the upgrades.

“It’s incredible to see the commitment by members of our outlying communities to improve their surroundings and putting forward ideas to enhance their townships,” he said.

“The GBAPA demonstrated that this was an important project for locals and visitors to Goughs Bay, which is why Council was glad to give its support.

“These infrastructure improvements create more opportunities for people to enjoy the town’s fantastic foreshore environment and the health benefits gained by being outside and active.”

GBAPA Secretary, Gail Hart, said it was excellent to have these much-needed facilities that will be well utilised by both locals and visitors.

“It’s really great to have another barbeque setting where people can enjoy the beauty of the area,” she said.

“GBAPA really appreciates that Mansfield Shire Council allocated funding for the streetscape project as it provides the infrastructure to allow people to get out and enjoy the waterfront near Main Street,” she said.

Council allocated $50,000 from the 2021/2022 Budget for the project with additional funding of $15,700 provided via the Victorian Government’s Outdoor Activation Fund.

A successful application by the GBAPA to Council’s Outlying Communities Infrastructure Fund resulted in an additional $10,000 being allocated to the project to complete the construction of the picnic shelter and public BBQ.

DESPITE overcast skies, the Goughs Bay Festival drew a strong crowd on Saturday 19, with both locals and visitors alike embracing a day on and beside the lake.

“The Goughs Bay Festival was a huge success with all ages coming out, getting involved and making the most of the wonderful lake conditions we have this year,” Mayor Cr James Tehan.

“The weather held out long enough for families, boat enthusiasts and locals to enjoy the atmosphere, Ramsay boats, food, music and free children’s activities. “ Organised by the Goughs Bay Area Progress Association in conjunction with the Goughs Bay Boat Sport and Recreation Club and the Shire Council, the family friendly day of music, food, activities and boats is an annual event.

Featuring a Ramsay Boat show’n’shine, these boat enthusiasts have been getting together since 2013, with participants keen to get back to Goughs Bay after COVID restrictions put the event on hold for the last couple of years.

Featuring a boat ‘run to the wall’ component, boat owners took their ski boats out for a spin, heading to Eildon Wall and back.

“It was great to see so many people in Goughs Bay after the forced cancellations of lakeside events over the past few years,” said Cr Tehan.

“Council supports community events that provide an opportunity for our community and visitors to come together, socialise and enjoy our natural environment and looks forwarding to continuing the support for this event.”

BACK ON THE CALENDAR: Food and entertainment were on offer in the park, with visitors not allowing a few dark clouds to overshadow the event.

ANOTHER ROUND: Cr James Tehan was unanimously re-elected to the role of Mayor for a second term at the November Council meeting.

Cr Steve Rabie was elected Deputy Mayor for the same one-year period, taking over from Cr Mark Holcombe, who spent the past twelve months as Deputy after being Mayor the year beforehand.

Mayor Cr Tehan thanked his fellow councillors for entrusting him to lead council for another term as Mayor.

“I am humbled and excited to be continuing in the mayoral role and working with my fellow councillors to progress the objectives outlined in our Council Plan,” he said.

“This council remains committed to listening to our community and works hard to deliver on plans that have been developed in consultation with them.

“We have some significant projects earmarked for completion over the next 12 months and I’m excited to watch their progression.

“I also offer my congratulations to Cr Rabie on his appointment as Deputy Mayor.

“His commitment to our community is second to none.”

Chief Executive Officer, Kirsten Alexander, is happy with the unanimous re-appointment of the Mayor and is looking forward to the year ahead working with both Cr Tehan and Cr Rabie.

Creating a plan for the Merton community’s future THE Merton Community Group has created a community plan for the future of Merton.

Mansfield Shire Council is looking to incorporate this into a larger, comprehensive plan that looks forward for 20 years and considers urban planning and community vision in tandem.

With the existing community plan in mind, council is hoping to engage with the

broader Merton community and gather their ideas on how they would like to see Merton develop into the future.

Council will continue working directly with the Merton Community Group to support and reinforce the plans that are already in progress and to have the recommendations formalised into the Planning Scheme.

Blooming good show with the write stuff

DESPITE the disappointment of cancelling the 2022 Mansfield Show because of ongoing wet conditions, the Mansfield A&P Society ran successful Floriculture and Writing competitions with the support of the community on Saturday, November 19.

One of the major show sponsors The Delatite Hotel, thanks to Dean Belle, offered space so the Floriculture section could still go ahead.

It was a buzz of activity from 8am to 9.30 am with various floral exhibits being dropped off by entrants of all ages for the judging which commenced at 10am.

As always, the roses proved to be hotly contested with the Val Parks Champion Rose perpetual trophy and sash much sought after.

The winning rose was entered by Val’s daughter Glenda Parks who was there with her father Lloyd to support the show.

Glenda also took out the Most Successful Exhibitor for Floriculture 2022 and a generous cash prize kindly donated by Mansfield Power Ag. Glenda and Lloyd also provided cash prizes for the rose classes this year.

It was pleasing to see the children’s floriculture section well supported and a big thank you to the Mansfield Garden Club who provided this year’s prize money to encourage our younger entrants.

One of our regular show exhibitors, nine-year-old Jack Hurly from Samaria, was so disappointed when the show was cancelled but decided to give floriculture

The Mansfield A&P Society was appreciative of the wonderful job that Cam Macdermid, from Kyabram did as judge, ably assisted by chief steward Dick Leatham.

Also, a big thank you to the volunteers who helped set up and process all the entries on the day.

Following the judging, the doors were thrown open to the public and exhibitors to enjoy the floral display.

The School Writing and Poetry entries, which had already been judged before the show date, were on display in the St John’s Anglican Church Hall and also open to the public.

The winners were not announced beforehand so stu-

dents had the pleasure, while accompanied by their parents, to learn of their success.

The adult and junior poetry was well supported with prizes and sashes for the best open and junior entries.

The Mansfield A&P Society looks forward to an even “bigger and better show” next year back at the Mansfield Showgrounds.

They would like to give a

big thank you to; Trish Gilson the coordinator for the schools’ writing section who organised an alternative venue; a special thank you to the Mansfield Newsagency who has generously supported the writing section; and major sponsor Paton Air, who retained the naming rights for the Floriculture section as in previous years.

ON Tuesday November 15 all year sixes from Mansfield Primary School set off on an adventure.

Four days, to the summit of Mt Buller.

One day riding, three days hiking.

After the bell went we began getting into our groups then lining up to ride off.

We waved and high-fived all the parents and school kids from prep to year five.

With the claps and cheers ringing in our ears we rode off.

We were riding on bitu-

men for quite a while until we all stopped to all have a drink and investigated the view of where we were heading.

We set off again and started riding down to the massive quagmire of puddles along Pollards Lane.

“Oozy doesn’t begin to describe that track,” Jake said “I was going in to look at Judd stuck in the muck.

“I went to step and my shoe disappeared into the mud.

“I went to pull it out and my foot came out but no shoe!

“I had to move and dig in the mud and pull the laces to get it out.”

After riding for hours, we

arrived at the lunch spot - the Merrijig War Memorial.

We had sausages in bread with fruit and soup.

It was nice to have something warm on a cold day.

Then we began riding again.

We rode two kilometres before arriving at our destination - Merrijig Primary School.

We all went to the toilet as soon as we got there, then we grabbed our tents.

After setting up, we had free time before dinner.

For dinner we had tasty spaghetti bolognaise and garlic bread before going into the hall and reflecting in our journal.

“The spaghetti was tender and perfectly cooked,” said Pich.

“It fell apart in my mouth.”

Once again, we caught a glimpse of our destination through the clouds, this time covered in snow.

The next day we had to get out of the camp site before 8:30.

We brushed the ice off our tents, packed lunches, ate breakfast and packed tents and bags.

The sun was shining as we started walking off.

That day we walked for 8.5km and walked through knee deep water along Lovicks Lane.

Then we arrived at Darling

Day four was hardest of them all, it was West Ridge.

We started in the tall forest, climbing into the snow gums until we got quite high and started rock climbing.

The ants were horrible, but we finally made it to the top where we met Mrs. Salmon and Toby with icy poles.

As everyone got to the top, we did the famous photo and started walking to the bus.

Zara said, “It didn’t feel real.

“I could see where we started and it seemed really far away.

“It felt like all my hard work led to an achievement.”

“I would like to thank all the people who helped us with this journey,” said Max.

Huts in icy, windblown rain (and some hail) where we met Timbertop students and played some games.

It was good to learn some new games and meet new people.

We then had apricot chicken.

It was a good dinner after a long rainy day of hiking.

We then had shout-outs and dessert.

Day three was long.

We just kept walking and walking and walking until we made it to Forest Creek to set up our tents in the towering forest and that was the night.

The highlight of that day was the hotdogs that we had for lunch.

Christmas Scavenger hunt for ‘Little Bank Piggies’

STATE police are urging motorists to improve their driving awareness, as the state enters a particularly high-risk period for death and serious injury.

Between November 22 and December 2 last year, 11 drivers lost their lives on Victorian roads, with police concerned about a repeat towards the end of 2022 as traffic increases and wild weather continues to cause havoc for motorists.

More than half of the 11 fatalities occurred in regional Victoria, while one third of collisions involved a driver older than 65- years-old.

Acting assistant Commissioner road policing, Justin Goldsmith, urged Victorian drivers to remain vigilant when travelling throughout the state in the coming weeks.

“Now is not the time to be complacent when getting behind the wheel,” he said.

Some 224 lives have already been lost on Victorian roads in 2022, 25 more than at the same time last year.

She pointed out that back in the 1940s and 1950s when there was a world-wide epidemic of Polio it was common for up to 1000 new cases per day to be recorded in Australia.

This year there have been 22 new cases, a rise from last year which recorded only six.

She said COVID had played a big part in the rise of cases, particularly overseas, as vaccinations for polio had not been distributed around the world in the past two years.

Rotarians around the world aim to raise $50 million towards this program,

which will then be matched by the Bill Gates Foundation.

“Give every child a future - we also aim to vaccinate the triple antigen doses to 100,000 in one year,” she said.

DG McPherson then spoke on gaining new membership and retaining existing members.

He advised clubs to do an annual survey of members asking them, “what it is you want to get out of Rotary?”

He said by asking continually each member if they were still getting satisfaction from their membership then that person will stay, if they

are not then clubs are likely to lose them.

He pointed out also that the average age of Rotarians was getting older, so members need to encourage younger community members to get involved.

“Invite them along to a working bee, or a special event, not to pressure a potential member, but just show them fellowship and what we do in our communities and around the world,” he said.

“This way we can gain help, new membership and give others a sense of pride in being active in their community and themselves.”

EFFORTS to reintegrate Growling Grass Frogs (growlers) to the Winton Wetlands reserve near Benalla will officially launch this week, ahead of a public celebration of the iconic species.

A group of expert organisations will lead Taskforce Growler in an effort to re-introduce the iconic species, which has not been seen in the area since the days of the former Lake Mokoan, which produced conditions not suitable for further breeding.

Winton Wetlands’ new population of the frog is expected to be sourced from waterways near Bendigo, as an important part of the park’s overall wetland restoration project.

Restoration manager Lisa Farnsworth said re-integrating the growlers would give the region’s biodiversity efforts a major boost.

“If successful, it’s going to lead the way for other amphibian ‘re-wilding’ projects around Australia and beyond,” she said.

“So the stakes are high, and we need community support to make sure it happens.”

The growlers are known predators of other frogs and a crucial food source for a number of wetland birds, and are expected to make a valuable contribution to the ecological balance of the area going forward.

by Rotarian Bob Prosser who outlined briefly where Freya will be heading for in January 2023.

She start her exchange position on January 21 heading for Mindelheim, Germany (about one hour’s drive from Munich).

Freya spoke to the meeting saying she had already attended an orientation weekend in Melbourne where she met some of the other outbound exchange students, also heading for Germany, as well as a few of the inbound students.

She spoke on the small town to which she will be living in for the 12 month exchange and learning about her host family.

“I have also started learning German and I am very much looking forward to the journey ahead of me,” she said.

Literary gems prevail at Bushy Tales competition

By LYNN ELDER FROM the dust motes of a country bookshop to the war-torn fields of Afghanistan, the annual Bushy Tales writing competition, hosted by the Mansfield Arts Council, provided a plethora of poetry, memoirs and short stories based around this year’s theme of plants and/or personalities.

A presentation night at the Magnolia on Thursday, November 17 revealed the winning and short-listed entries which have been published

by Arts Mansfield in the 2022 Bushy Tales Collection.

Entries were received from many locals and from down the road at Yea, with others from Melbourne and far away as Wagga Wagga, NSW. This year category one for writing was split into short stories and memoirs, while the second category was made up of bush poetry and other poems.

Five finalists were announced for each category.

John Bush won with his short story ‘The Vines that Stayed’ .

The judge Miriam Zolin said, “I couldn’t get this story out of my head.”

Runner up was ‘The Old Man and the Tree’ written by Denise Kramarczuk.

Merrijig PS helping others in need Merrijig Primary School students recently had the opportunity to participate in a Zoom meeting with students in Malaysia to discuss their respective social enterprise missions.

“We spoke to Skkoris in Malaysia and heard about their project, in which they made fertilizer from the organic waste generated from their canteen,” said principal Carole McCluskey.

“The fertilizer was then used on their vegetable gardens, with the resulting produce being sold.

“Our two groups of children spoke about their products.

“One group made artisan coat hooks, recycling work horseshoes from a local business; the other sold mugs with images from our local High Country - images from Filmer Photography.

“These mugs are still available to order through the Bendigo Bank and the school.

“The participants all spoke of the kindness engendered by the Social Enterprise Project, and how good it was to be part of a wider community.”

Everyone who contributed to the project felt the effort they had put in to establish their businesses was worth it, by being able to help others in need.

Haines: Councils need more for flood clean-up INDEPENDENT Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines said the Federal Government should urgently increase funding to local councils to help with the ongoing flood clean up.

Roads across Indi have been heavily impacted by recent rain events, with every local government area facing significant clean up and road repair costs.

Dr Haines called on the Federal Government to increase the funding it provides to local government through the Federal Assistance Grants program,

which provides untied funding to local councils.

“You can’t underestimate the importance of proper funding for regional roads, and this Spring’s rains have left our roads disintegrating before our eyes,” Dr Haines said.

“From the shocking sight of the caved in Gooramadda Road in Rutherglen, to the potholes on the Hume that blew dozens of tyres, and to every pothole in between.

“This is dangerous, and it is affecting every person who uses our roads.”

“These untied grants allow councils to spend funds where it’s most needed: on road maintenance; maintaining community assets like sporting grounds, libraries or pools; or new enabling infrastructure.”

Dr Haines said it was positive the Government had included funding for the Local Roads and Community Infra-

structure Program until 202526, which also assists councils to fund road upgrades, but more was needed.

“I’m hearing from local councils—flat out filling potholes—that they have no hope of fixing roads without a serious injection of funds from state and federal governments,” Dr Haines said. “Our road infrastructure needs serious review, to ensure we are making the right funding decisions for the future, particularly as the climate changes.”

NE drug use high: report A NORTHERN Victoria MP says it is vital the next Victorian government reinstates investment in the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) sector after the state again ranked high in the latest National Wastewater Drug Monitoring report.

Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party Member for Northern Victoria, Tania Maxwell, said the state ranked first in capital city consumption of methylamphetamine, heroin and ketamine, while regional Victoria ranked first for ketamine consumption and second for heroin and oxycodone.

The report found rates of methylamphetamine consumption increased in capital cities and regional sites, as the AOD sector restated its call to boost alcohol and drug support services.

Ms Maxwell said the Parliamentary Budget Office on Friday published a DHJP

Regional g Vic top p for ketamine,, 2nd for heroin,, oxyy use election policy costing to reinstate funding to the AOD sector that was cut in the 2022-23 Victorian budget.

The PBO estimates the reinstatement would cost $46.5 million a year over the next decade.

The costing noted government spending in 2021-22 of $308.6 million on ‘Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation’ and $44.5m for ‘Drug Prevention and Control’, totalling $353.1m.

In comparison, the 202223 budget allocated $313.3m, a cut of $39.8m.

Ms Maxwell said the latest wastewater report was an important indicator of the need for sustained investment in the AOD sector to reduce drug related crime and other harms.

abuse in the community means less crime, less victims of crime and better wellbeing for individuals and their families,” Ms Maxwell said.

“That’s why adequate funding of these services

is important to us.

“There are more than 4000 Victorians waiting for addiction counselling in Victoria and yet we’ve seen nearly $40m cut in the last budget and not a single election commitment from the

major parties so far to address the shortfall.

“The major parties need to step up and explain to our communities how they intend to stop the spiral of addiction that is a continuing scourge in regional Victorian communities.”

Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party was also critical of the Labor government scrapping the AOD Workforce Initiative, which supplied $25m to the sector and 100 AOD workers, saying this could mean up to 85,000 fewer standard counselling sessions would be available over the next decade.

The election statement of the peak organisation representing Victoria’s publicly-funded AOD services, VAADA, described the situation as “grave” and called for a significant uplift in the sector, including regional services, to meet the escalating demand for services.

Students getting busy in Jamieson IT HAS been a very busy time for students and teaching staff at Jamieson Primary school.

Monday was the final horse riding class at McCormack’s Trail riding business for the students this year.

Following the riding experience the students enjoyed their first swimming class at the Jamieson Caravan Park pool on Monday afternoon with class teacher Joel.

ON election day two Jamieson primary school students Harry and Beau with mum Kate Berg, manned the Jamieson primary school fundraiser sausage sizzle, near the Memorial Hall, adjacent to where the voters were attending the polling booth.

It was a great success and the two boys were a delight, well mannered and efficient while Mum kept the sausages and onions coming at a great rate.

Delicious.

LAST week the Jamieson students enjoyed a school rewards trip and the whole school attended the Mansfield Zoo, experienced and loved every moment hand feeding many animals, and they enjoyed walking around and chatting about the amazing animals.

Judy Ridley presented a Prayer Book to welcome the new Minister from the Jamieson community of Saint Peter’s in Jamieson.

Reverend Mel Clark will conduct her first service in Jamieson next Sunday, December 4, at Saint Peter’s Anglican Church at 11:30 am.

THE Gallery on Nash and Nursery was a hive of industry last weekend, as the final sale was conducted at the present location.

The artisans and garden providores were kept busy over the weekend.

The new location for the Gallery and Nursery will be in Grey Street.

He is in recovery after flying home on Monday to Brisbane.

LAST Sunday Father George Feliciouz welcomed two visiting chaps who he had not seen for a decade to St John the Apostle church in Jamieson.

The father and son had come to the area and camped while exploring the terrain and hoping to see some wildlife.

This Christmas Hay Bale display has been a little battered by the recent weather conditions and Santa has had to ‘hold on tight’ to his umbrella stand to maintain his position. Poor Santa though has lost his shelter because of the high winds and rain - all that remains are the arms of the brolly. The hay bales have been placed by the Parsons to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. The hay bale display is situated on Midland Link and can be easily seen from the road.

North East regional news in brief Man pleads guilty to murder charge

possessing a prohibited weapon with exemption/ approval, and failing to comply with an order to access a data storage device.

A NORTH East man accused of murdering Wangaratta woman Carmen Niklaus during a vicious assault late last year has pleaded guilty to the charges.

Ricky John Williams, 43, had initially entered a plea of not guilty during a Magistrates’ Court committal hearing earlier this year.

However, appearing in Melbourne’s Supreme Court last week he admitted to murdering Ms Niklaus at Everton Caravan and Tourist Park on December 6.

A plea hearing at Wangaratta was set down for February 23 by Judicial Registrar Tim Freeman.

Williams has remained in custody since his arrest, and is yet to apply for bail.

Police believe Niklaus and Williams were known to each other.

Falls Creek call FALLS Creek is calling for government assistance for businesses following news the Bogong High Plains Road may be completely blocked until February or March.

Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce president Lisa Logan said Falls Creek businesses cannot access Victorian Government flood relief grants as they have not been directly impacted by floods, despite the landslide and the floods having the same root cause .

CRUSHED: A motorist was lucky to escape with their life, after a large gum toppled and crushed their moving van travelling along Taminick Gap Road last week.

Victoria is in contact with the Falls Creek Alpine Resort to understand the implications on local businesses and is connecting those businesses with relevant government support.

Nationals MP for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy said the Falls Creek community risked losing in excess of $100 million this summer, and emphasised the extended impact of an ongoing road closure to mental health, and community togetherness.

The Bogong landslide is one of the largest and most complex landslides to hit Victoria since the early 1980s, according to authorities at the community meeting held in Mount Beauty last week.

More than 100 people attended the meeting at the Mount Beauty Community Centre, where Department

of Transport and SES authorities explained the state of the landslide and the work to clear it.

SES deputy incident controller Matt Taranto said the landslide was estimated to be around 35,000 cubic metres of spoil and debris.

Moving vehicles crush A NUMBER of drivers have narrowly dodged death in recent days, after large gum trees uprooted and crushed their moving vehicles in two separate incidents at Glenrowan and Killawarra last week.

Emergency service crews were first called to Taminick Gap Road near Glenrowan around 3pm on Sunday afternoon, when a large gum toppled onto the roof of a transit van, smashing

the car’s front windscreen and crushing the vehicle’s roof.

A second incident on Monday afternoon saw at least five emergency vehicles and an SES road crash rescue helicopter attend WangarattaYarrawonga Road near Killawarra, when a motorist was successfully rescued from a similarly crushed vehicle.

Both motorists sustained only minor injuries.

Drugs worth $180k allegedly found A MAN has been charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine after a search warrant at a Kialla house near Shepparton late last week.

According to police,

detectives from the Shepparton Divisional Response Unit seized a range of drugs and weapons from the property.

Police said they found a quantity of alleged methamphetamine, suspected MDMA and cannabis, a baton, conducted energy device and more than $12,000 in cash.

Investigators believe the approximate value of the drugs seized is up to $180,000.

A 32-year-old Kialla man has been remanded in custody.

THE 130th Annual Euroa Agricultural Show is going to soldier on and is scheduled for this Saturday, December 3.

The show’s committee are pleased to announce some extra features have been confirmed for the main show day.

Stewart Bryant Whipcracking from Mansfield will be performing a number of shows.

Spring rains encourage garden growth

By JUDITH FLANDERS, Mansfield Garden Club IN spite of the extraordinary amount of rain we’ve had during Spring the gardens seem to have loved the rain.

It’s a treat to walk around the streets enjoying other people’s gardens; there are some very talented gardeners in our town (Mansfield).

Mansfield Garden Club members have been busy mowing lawns and cutting back the explosion of growth everywhere and preparing and planting out vegetables when the weather permits.

Some have visited Open Garden Days out of town that have managed to go ahead despite the soggy conditions.

David Kuronya from DK Tree Care was guest speaker at the club’s September meeting.

David explained how his love of horticulture led him from nursery work to

working for the Shire Parks and Gardens team before joining High Country Tree Services.

His interest in tree health led him to ultimately study to become a consulting arborist and starting his own business this year.

David identifies trees and their potential for disease.

He gathers data to produce a report to clients to assist them in keeping their trees safe and healthy.

At the October meeting members welcomed Ralph Bristow who shared with them his love of perennial plants.

Ralph is a renowned artist and the owner of Ralph Bristow Garden Design.

He has developed a garden at Barwite on the banks of the Broken River on a property he shares with his partner, Nicky.

The house is now surrounded with perennials planted over the last eight years, with sections of the garden only three years old.

EXCEPTIONAL GROWTH: Heavy Spring rains this season have encouraged strong growth for landscape designer Ralph Bristow of Barwite.

Ralph has a passion for perennials and delights in the changes through the seasons and the various stages the plants go through, providing inspiration for not only the plantings in the garden but the artwork he creates.

SOIL structure can be heavily effected by extended or heavy periods of wet by squeezing the oxygen from soil.

“We often hear about or experience our ground drying like concrete after seasons of wet,” said Bayley Goode from Goode Organics.

“When soil structure collapses we not only see disappearing silicon we also see the release of aluminium.”

Bayley believes that silicon in soils is often overlooked when considering approaches to soil nutrition and animal health.

Through erosion and agriculture Australian soils have some of the lowest silicon levels in the world, yet silicon is the second most abundant element after oxygen across the Earth’s crust.

Aluminum toxicity has long been recognized as a significant constraint in growing lawn and pasture.

Silicon not only neutralizes aluminum it improves the efficiency of nitrogen.

Nitrogen plant uptake is facilitated by silicon as well as increasing chlorophyl production in the plant.

This is achieved by improving the exchange

rate capacity and biological properties such as microbial biomass.

Silicon has also been shown to remediate the effects of stress on the plant through both bacterial and insect attacks.

To further improve the efficacy of silicon, calcium and magnesium are both beneficial in improving soil acidity and therefore availability of mineral nutrition.

“There have been multiple studies conducted on the benefits of silicon,” said Bayley.

“It is definitely something worth considering after such a wet season.”

DURING summer it’s important that we do our part to conserve water - so what does this mean if we love our garden and want to keep it looking good through the hot weather?

There are a number of simple yet effective things that we can do to make the most of the water we have, here are a few ideas: Plan your garden Consider the following aspects when choosing plants - how much sun or shade the area will get, exposure to prevailing winds, whether the garden is up or down slope, and what is the soil like in that particular area?

Group plants with similar water requirements together Higher water users will be easier to maintain if they are together - fruit trees and vegetable gardens for example.

Low water users will perform best if the watering regime is suited to their requirements, rather than trying to cater for different requirements in the one garden area.

Soil - where good gardens begin Soils with good structure, and high levels of organic matter, will retain moisture for a longer period of time.

Good soil structure will also allow for strong root development, which results in vigorous and resilient plants which will be able to withstand dry periods more successfully.

Incorporate as much compost or cow manure as possible.

Mulch Mulching your garden is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help your garden through the dry weather.

There are various mulch options available, all with different benefits.

Pea straw is excellent for vegetable gardens and fruit trees as it breaks down into your soil (improving the structure as it does so), adds nitrogen - very important for hardworking vegie garden soils, and is easy to dig in when the time comes to plant next season’s vegies.

Shredded pine bark is great for ornamental garden beds - it’s long lasting, and great for retaining moisture and keeping weeds at bay.

Stone mulches are very effective for moisture retention and weed suppression as well - be aware of the radiant heat that can be generated by stone mulch in the sun

though - and consider which plants will be appropriate for this situation.

Watering The type of watering that you do will have a big impact on how well your garden copes through the summer.

Drip irrigation placed under a layer of mulch, controlled with a timer is the most water wise solution.

It allows for slow, consistent water penetration, utilising every drop of water.

The timer means that you will never wake up in the middle of the night wondering if you turned the tap off.

Longer, less frequent watering means that your plants will develop deeper roots which are more resilient to dry weather, rather than shallow rooted plants which dry out quickly once the soil begins to dry out.

Stay water wise this summer Water in the cool of the morning or evening; Water longer, but less frequently; Mulch, mulch, mulch; Use a tap timer; Keep your lawn a little bit longer - longer blades of grass will shade each other.

Barbeque gas safety this summer BEFORE the ‘shrimp’, corn, steak, vege burgers or chicken skewers go on the barbeque this summer, make sure you carry out a safety check to avoid barbeque gas fires.

Attach your LPG gas bottle to the mounting hook or set it in its holder or shelf.

Gas bottles should always be kept upright and your bottle must never hang by the gas hose.

Remove any dust cover or plug that may be inside or over the female valve opening, where the gas regulator screws in.

Inspect the gas regulator and hose for any damage - some gas regulators have rubber o-rings on the connector and these should also be undamaged.

The connector should be clean and dirt free prior to insertion.

Screw the gas regulator into the valve opening by turning the hand wheel

anti-clockwise (reverse thread) and tighten well by hand.

Make sure the gas hose is not kinked.

Perform a soapy water barbeque leak test every time you attach a fresh full gas bottle, as well as each time you are going to use your barbeque.

Start by putting some soapy water in a spray bottle - valve and fittings are made from brass so do not use anything that contains ammonia as it can cause brass to become brittle and crack; Turn on the gas bottle without turning on the barbeque; Spray the entire valve, gas regulator and hose assembly with the soapy water; Bubbles will form if there is a gas leak and you may also smell the gas.

If you find a leak, immediately turn the gas off again and make sure

you know how to remove, tighten or replace the affected item/s.

The gas regulator controls the gas pressure of

the gas going from the gas bottle to the barbeque and to remove it from the gas bottle, close the valve and unscrew it. It is a reverse

(or left-handed) thread so unscrew it clockwise.

Be aware that a small amount of gas remaining in the gas regulator and hose

may be released when you remove the regulator from the gas cylinder valve.

The gas hose is attached to the gas regulator on one end with a POL fitting, and the barbeque on the other end.

These can become damaged or deteriorate with age and you should replace it if it shows any signs of being faulty.

It is good practice to replace the gas regulator and hose assembly at the same time as gas regulators wear with age just like the hose deteriorates.

Caution: Never open the valve on an unattached gas bottle even if you think it is empty.

Remove the gas cylinder from barbeque by lifting the empty gas bottle off of the mounting hook or out of its holder/shelf.

When done, rinse with clean water to remove the soap solution.

Hence, it’s never been more important to conduct an extensive due diligence.

Wild dogs and dingos in spotlight IN response to an ABC 7.30 report on November 14 - which raised the debate on whether a protected animal like the dingo could be and should be legally hunted - the National Wild Dog Action Plan hopes to clarify policy and the organisation’s stance on the issue.

According to National Wild Dog Management Coordinator Greg Mifsud, “The National Wild Dog Action Plan supports the conservation of protected dingoes in Victoria’s national parks whilst limiting the impacts of wild dogs on neighbouring properties.”

Limiting impact means that 20 per cent of the state’s national park and state forests is being managed for wild dogs in the perimeter of the public estate east of the Hume Highway.

“A total of 80 per cent of the national parks and state forests is protecting dingoes, wild dogs and their hybrids where they undertake their ecosystem role and are part of the biodiversity,” Mr Mifsud said.

“Those wild dogs caught moving out of the parks and continuing onto private lands where they cause an impact are killed.”

This includes dingoes and their hybrids.

“The ABC 7.30 report also

failed to mention wild dogs, dingoes and dingo-like dogs are distributed right across Victoria’s Alpine National Park,” said Mr Mifsud.

Mr Mifsud said the wild dog control program delivered within a three kilometre livestock protection zone on national park boundaries acted similar to a firebreak protecting both park and private land.

The three kilometre perimeter livestock protection zone limits wild dogs moving onto private land killing livestock and equally limits domestic dogs moving into the vast national parks and breeding with the protected dingo.

“Just like firebreaks stop fire travelling in both directions, the control program has a dual purpose,” Mr Mifsud said.

“Realistically, out of that 20 per cent of area of the national park, wild dog control is restricted to specific targeted areas within the buffer zone at any one time.

“Wild dogs are still able to filter right through the national park onto neighbouring properties and further afield into NSW and the Canberra region.

“Local wild dog management plans clearly look at both conservation and impact.”

When it comes to dingo and wild dog population density in Victoria, he pointed to an average of 500 to 600 wild dogs being removed by the Wild Dog program trappers in the east of the state each year for the past decade.

Mr Mifsud said the dingo population in the Victorian landscape remained healthy and was not threatened with extinction.

“The annual number of wild dogs trapped hasn’t declined which would indicate the dingo population inside the national park is healthy, sustainable and producing the same number of offspring each year,” he said.

park neighbours while the population of the dingo remains healthy and viable in the vast conservation area.

“Some of those offspring reside in the national park and others look to go outside the national park where they are controlled before causing an impact.

“If these dispersing dogs aren’t controlled in the livestock protection zone they will move out from the parks and likely attack livestock and domestic pets not just on properties boarding the park but much further away and possibly on the outskirts of regional townships and communities.

“Once they are established in these areas, they are much harder to control as the tools currently used are limited in built-up areas, putting at risk livestock and

domestic pets on rural properties and hobby farms.

“Professional wild dog controllers are required to dispatch those wild dogs under a current nationally agreed code of practice and standard operating procedures, which they do with the utmost professionalism.”

The National Wild Dog Management Plan supports and promotes the use of humane and effective best practice management techniques to deliver control programs in what can be remote and isolated areas of the country.

Mr Mifsud said the reduction of wild dogs and foxes under the baiting and trapping program has resulted in reduced stock losses whilst maintaining healthy populations of dingoes in the state’s national parks and state forests in the east of the state.

“About 20 to 30 per cent of baits are taken annually by wild dogs and foxes.

“Although foxes are a nontarget take, this has a positive biodiversity and production benefit by removing them from the landscape.

“The results of the Victorian Wild Dog control program and the combination of ground and aerial baiting in addition to trapping has greatly reduced the number of livestock attacked and killed by wild dogs on properties adjoining the national park and public lands in Victoria.”

Mr Mifsud said wild dog management programs are undertaken using best practice techniques humanely as possible.

“We have to ensure our control programs deliver humane outcomes for those dogs being controlled.

“The Centre for Invasive Species Solutions is working with its partners including the Victorian Government on solutions to limit the time wild dogs remain in traps.

“These include alert systems that notify wild dog controllers of a dog in a trap and devices that will deliver a lethal dose of poison to render the animals unconscious followed by a humane death soon after being captured.”

King Valley winemakers make case for Prosecco protection LEADING winemakers from neighbouring King Valley travelled to Canberra this week to meet with the trade minister to make the case to protect the use of the name Prosecco in free trade negotiations with the European Union.

The European Union is seeking to place Geographic Indication protection on Prosecco, which Australian winemakers say would devastate their industry.

Representatives from Brown Brothers, Pizzini Wines and Dal Zotto Wines in the King Valley held a series of meetings in Parliament House to ensure the Government and Opposition were aware of the importance of retaining the use of the name Prosecco.

The delegation met with Trade Minister Don Farrell, Agriculture Minister Murray Watt, Shadow Trade Minister Kevin Hogan and Shadow Agriculture Minister David Littleproud, as well as other Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum.

Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines facilitated the meetings and was part of the meeting with the trade minister.

“Prosecco is vital to the economy in the King Valley and the wine industry is vital to Indi,” Dr Haines said.

More than half of Australia’s Prosecco comes from the King Valley, where there are 15 wineries and a further 18 independent grape growers.

Since 2018 the area has experienced a 20 per cent year on year growth in Prosecco grape production.

“Otto Dal Zotto planted the first Prosecco vines in Australia, bringing the wine he grew up with in Valdobbiadene in Italy to the King Valley.

“Since then, Prosecco has grown to be worth $205 million in sales alone each year for the Australian economy,” Dr Haines said.

“Otto said to me Prosecco is like his family, that the name is so important to him, and we must fight for it, and that is what we are doing.”

Dr Haines has met with Australia’s lead trade negotiators and Minister Farrell in recent months to make the case for her constituents.

“If Geographic Indication was granted on Prosecco as part of the Free Trade Agreement it would have a devastating impact on grape growers and wine makers in the King Valley and across Australia,” she said.

“I’m doing everything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

LSSDance celebrates 30 years in business

BY LYN SAVILLE LSSDance commenced in 1993 with 12 students learning classical ballet.

Over that time the school has expanded to include dance fusion, a mix of jazz, cheerleading, Bollywood, hip hop, tribal, and recently added a dedicated contemporary classes as well as acro, tap and dance pilates.

We’ve taught thousands of students over 30 years and our belief is still that dance is a wonderful experience for everyone.

Not only do students learn to move their bodies safely they also develop self-confidence and how to perform together as a team.

The examiner Mr Peter Wallace was impressed with

the students confidence and high level of technique and dance quality.

Considering the disruption these students have had to their training, not only Covid lockdowns and zoom classes but having to move studios mid year, the examination results were absolutely fantastic.

Though very frustrated at having to move from our old studio due to the building having to be sold, our new purpose fitted studios are proving to be a better fit, a great location in the Village Plaza, plenty of parking and close to everything.

The big Buzz on Buller Road

By MICK PEARCE A BUZZ and a bit of chaos at the start of this week’s race.

The choice was “Vote at the early polling booth or go ride the bike fast with 16 others” - it was an easy decision for me.

Apart from a few tetchy traffic marshals at the polling booth, it was a perfect night for racing on the out and back 25 km course on the Mt Buller Road, with a finish a few hundred metres after turning left up the Jamieson Road.

Our group, Darren Bakker, Tim Ross, Rob Skinner, Ryder Chadd and myself rode well but a bit of ‘surging’ with the nervousness of the faster guys catching was on our minds.

We lost Tim and Darren before the turn but managed to catch the group ahead of us; Janine Appleton and then John Eisner managing to hang on for the ride back to town.

Block splintered before the turnaround with Chris Miller trying to get to our

group without Steve Brown or Dave Moore. It never quite worked.

The Scratch group of Josh Hopwood and Andrew Garret rounded up the remnants of Block one by one and set off after us.

Rob got a gap heading into the final turn and it was Ryder who closed the gap.

I knew he’d have a strong sprint, so I started my sprint much earlier than logic suggested, just to try to surprise Ryder.

But Ryder got the welldeserved win in a strong sprint.

I hung on for second just ahead of a fast finishing Rob Skinner, Janine and John.

A very fast finishing Andy Garrett was next in fifth and fastest in 43.59.

Then came Chris Miller, Josh Hopwood, Steve Brown and Tim Ross completed the top ten.

Handicapper Dave Moore again proved his legend status plus the marshals, commissaire and other aficionados who helped to make a safe fun race, did a wonderful job too.

U12 girls basketballers win Southern Peninsula Tournament

By ALICIA CROWE THE Mansfield Under 12 Girls Gold Team comprising of Sophie Snell, Edie Gardner, Arrie Turner, Macey Thornton, Lara Harrop, Matilda Mills, Georgia Crowe and Alice Rademaker, recently competed in the Southern Peninsula Tournament.

Coached by Adam Snell and Assistant Coach Glenn Thornton, it was their second tournament together as a team and the first time Mansfield Eagles Basketball Club have competed in this tournament.

With a busy schedule for the first day of the tournament, the girls played against Southern Peninsula Yellow in Game 1.

They all brought such enthusiasm and excitement with them on arrival at the stadium and took that energy out onto the court.

From the jump ball their competitiveness and hunt for the ball was on full display as they kept their opponents scoreless in the first half.

They continued playing with strong defence, pressure at the ball, countless intercepts and above all else, exceptional teamwork and had a strong first game win 26-2.

Game 2 was against Mt Eliza Meteors.

A taller side than the previous game, but the girls didn’t let that intimidate them and continued to play their style of game, with intense pressure at the ball and half court press.

Despite so many shots at goal not converting, the girls continued to work hard and

Their teamwork was again phenomenal, and they went on to win convincingly 21-0.

With a short break between games and their third game of the day, the girls were feeling tired heading into Game 3 against Wonthaggi Coasters.

But once they stepped onto the court they went to work.

It was their strongest opponent of the day, who had fresher legs having only played two games, so the girls had to work hard.

The girls continued to put pressure on the ball, intercept, work hard in defence and came away with their third win of the day 14-7.

It was an early morning game on the Sunday against Sandringham for Game 4.

With their determination, support from both Adam

Snell and Glenn Thornton on the bench and the most incredible support crew cheering from the sidelines, the girls dominated the first half.

They continued playing strong putting into play what they have been learning at practice and doing in their weekly domestic games and kept Sandringham scoreless in the second half.

They went on to win 223, placing them on top of

the ladder and cementing a place in the Grand Final.

A bye in Round 5 gave the girls an opportunity for a nice break before their big Grand Final late afternoon where they met Wonthaggi Coasters again.

As expected, it proved to be another tough game.

As the stadium temperatures lifted, so too did the intensity of the game.

The girls continued to work hard for the ball, lis-

tened to what was asked of them from their coaches and kept cheering each other on from the bench.

They were up at half time, but scores were close.

With more encouragement and advice from Adam and Glenn, the girls took to the court in the second half with even more pressure at the ball, capitalising on rebounds and bringing their A-game defence, resulting in a stronger second half compared to their opponents.

A final score of 19-9 crowned them the Under 12 Girls Division 5 Grand Final winners and undefeated for their second tournament.

Georgia Crowe was awarded MVP for the Grand Final game.

Congratulations girls on another successful tournament and for proudly representing your club again with true teamwork and sportsmanship.

A big thank you to coach Adam Snell for putting in so much time, effort, heart and soul into coaching his little Eagles, to our Assistant coach Glenn Thornton for his knowledge, coaching and support of the team and to the amazing cheer squad of parents, siblings, families, friends and other teams in our Mansfield Eagles Basketball Club for supporting and cheering the girls on throughout the tournament.

The next tournament the girls will be competing is in Shepparton on December 3 and 4.

Ideal conditions for tennis Tuesday night

Earl Ree-Goodings stepped in for brother Max for Crackerjack and produced the goods against the Toy Pistols to get home in a close one with it all coming down to the last sets of the night, with Karyn Fraser and Dustin Ersvaer-Gotje holding on against Mark Poole and Erich Schneider.

Happy Feet were more like Happy all-over giving Megahit a Mega lesson.

Megahit with fill ins playing above their normal seeding fought hard, but Greg McDermott, Anna Spiers, Dion Theodossi and Geoff Hutchison were too classy and only dropped one set all night.

Bullet versus Juggernaut was supposed to be the much-anticipated battle of the Foxes, but it wasn’t to be with James Fox being a late withdrawal, calling on Brendan Grant to fill in.

Bullet got off to a slow start, Justin Odd and Emily Dirksen took care of Andrew Downey and Brendan Grant in the opening set.

Jaden Findlay and Kiera McDonagh turned the ship around taking the second set and Jaden winning all his sets on the night turned out to be the difference.

Wednesday Night Match Report

By BELINDA CIPA Stetson v Crash Helmet ANOTHER big night of tennis for team Stetson, with Scott Ersvaer who later claimed it was all down to the strength and power of at least four of his magnificent volley shots.

Dustin Ersvaer-Gotje’s serving was superlative, whilst Bec Bolwell and Lisa Morgan must have also contributed admirably as their team took 5 of the 6 sets and 32 games to 23 to score 6 match points.

Crash Helmet’s Matty Lowe, Cass Daykin, Will McAlister and Steph Herridge whilst somewhat despondent with their performance, accepted a photo opportunity and sensibly retreated to rehydrate and debrief until the lights were turned off.

Fedora v Trilby: Fedora was always going to face an uphill battle to seriously challenge Trilby.

All felt they enjoyed themselves however, and retreated, early, to the clubhouse and home to rehydrate.

Trilby took the maximum 7 points, winning all sets but Fedora had four games.

Sombrero v Bowler:

Last to finish on the night were Sombrero v Bowler, with Bowler adding to their overall games tally and almost (but not) clinching the final set point which went to tie break.

For David Mims the match was a good challenge and tougher than the score line suggests.

WHEN the Crocodile’s captain Carol Watts questioned her opposing captain on recruiting from Germany for their clash, Calamari’s captain Rhonda Carpenter could only lament the difficulty of replacing her number one player each week.

Fortunately, no-one was aware of the internationally ranked player in the other match between Matrix and Guys and Dolls.

Thursday night’s level had gone up a notch.

Erich Schneider, Crocodiles very own import, and Watts outclassed Matt Elliott and Carpenter at the outset defeating them 6-1.

However, handy replacement Henry Walesch, and Ben Elliott, both found their

range and easily accounted for Andrew and Helen Crockett 6-2 for Calamari.

Watts and Carpenter sparred with extremely lengthy rallies all night and every set produced extensive battles of courtcraft with tactical placement.

Calamari’s father-son duo won a tiebreak 7-2 and Walesch and Carpenter reversed the trend with a 6-0.

Calamari won 5/31 to 1/20 over Crocodiles.

Both teams played superbly giving it everything in the tough physical encounter.

Guys and Gals had included Rachel Parsons from the bye team and shared sets and games with Matrix until the final round.

Matrix regulars Fiona Lindsay, Ben Nally, Sarah Mae, and Jo O’Brien combined superbly against the top side.

Level on games going into the third set, the match was anybody’s, but Matrix stepped up winning both sets 6-2 against a somewhat shell-shocked opponent.

Nally had found rhythm and power in his second match for the season winning all his sets and Lindsay was satisfied to finally overcome her crafty counterpart Guy Evans in the last set with in-form partner Mae. Matrix won 4/30 to 2/22.

Calamari (22.5) slipped into top spot by half a point over Guys and Gals (22) with Matrix (20.5) hot on their heels.

The sun shone brightly for a well-attended junior tennis competition on Saturday morning.

Gina Elliott and Liam Delaney organised pairings and the finer points of scoring were sorted with guidance from the budding superstars.

TOUGH LOSS: A 9 point loss was a hard pill for the Mansfield men to swallow, when they knew they had more.

U16s gold boys nab silver in Wangaratta tournament

By ERIN BROWNING LAST weekend three teams in the u16/18 age group travelled to Wodonga to compete in the Wangaratta junior basketball tournament.

Among them were the u16 Boys Gold team coached by Benjamin and Tahlia Browning.

It was hard for our teams to commit with the short no-

tice of change of venue, due to Wangaratta refurbishing their courts likely until 2024 and travelling the extra distance.

We also found out when we got there we would be playing four quarters instead of our usual two halves and using a shot clock for the first time ever.

However this did not discourage the boys and we managed two hard fought

out wins first up against Tumut then Yarra-Mulwala on Saturday only going down by 5 to Tatura in our last game for the day.

Will Northcott came out firing with incredible speed, Noah Pigdon with tight defence causing many turnovers and mistakes by the opposition.

Charlie Dobson really took control and showed us what he is capable of,

scoring baskets and strong rebounds. Harry Craddock’s pressure on the ball was second to none, Astin Browning’s basketball smarts and assists helping the team alongside Ethan Pigdon bringing the ball into offence confidently.

Sam Kain is showing wisdom beyond his years our youngest player is a shining star then Hayden Desmond with a real leadership pres-

ence on court keeping the boys focused.

Sunday morning saw a narrow loss to Wodonga placing us in finals for Div 2.

This meant we went on to play Euroa in the semi final.

The boys kept their heads when down in the first quarter playing what was to be their best game for the tournament, getting up and winning by 18 points.

Off to the grand final, after an already big weekend we took on a strong Tatura again in the final just coming short but a hard fought game none the less.

This marks our third tournament for the season and our third grand final runners up.

The boys will be hungry for the big title in a weeks’ time at Shepparton tournament.

Two Steves play off in championship IN HOME Pennant last week there was a couple of exciting games with the Red team having an exciting draw with the Yellow team and the Green team had a 1 shot win over the Blue team.

In the other games the Lime team had an impressive win over the Gold team and the Pink team also had a terrific win over the Orange team.

The ladder sees Pink on top with 16pts +39 followed by Lime 12pts +29, Orange 12pts +11, Green 12pts -20, Yellow 8pts +6, Gold 8pts -26, Red 6pts -17 and last of all is the Blue team on 6pts -22.

On Thursday we had the final of the Ladies 100UP between Yvonne Robinson and Lyn Holland.

Their handicaps were the same so there was no advantage to either player and after the 7th end Lyn had a 2 point lead on 28/26.

Yvonne kept plugging away but Lyn had the edge for most of the day and had the lead 82/72 on the 17th end.

By the penultimate end Yvonne had the lead by 4pts and after picking up 8pts on the last end, Yvonne won the battle 102/92.

Congratulations to both players on a fantastic competition.

Friday saw 15 players having a game of social bowls with the winners of the day being Nikko, Trevor, Gregg and Renee with 2 wins 32pts from Mingo, Glenda, Shane and Anne with 1 win 21pts.

Saturday pennant saw the A2’s at home against Corowa Civic and after the allotted ends, the visitors were too strong taking the win 81 shots to 69.

Mansfield A2s sit in 7th spot on the ladder and will play Wodonga away this week.

The A4 pennant side travelled to Rutherglen and after a close tussle the home team took the points 89 shots to 82.

TWO STEVES: Mansfield Bowls Club held its Men’s Singles Championship over the past two weekends with the final being played off between two Steves. Steve Spence (left) defeated Steve Lewis in a close match 25 to 22 shots. It was congratulations to both, particularly Lewis as this is his first year playing bowls. Well done.

Mansfield A4s remain in 3rd position on the ladder and will play in a Friday night game this week.

Sunday saw the completion of the Men’s Championship singles with some great bowling and close games.

In the morning games Chris Laws was up against Steve Spence and Chris had the better of Steve leading 18 shots to 15 after 22 ends but the old stager ran over Chris winning 6 of the last 8 ends to take the win 26/20.

In the other game one of our

newer bowlers Steve Lewis was up against Rick Nichols and quickly went to a 10 shot to 2 lead.

Prickle found some form and by the 13th end the game was all tied up on 10 shots a piece.

Rick took the lead on the 16th end 14/12 but Steve kept plugging away and with some great bowling he took a great win 25/18.

The final in the afternoon was between the two Steves, with one being an up and coming player and the other a reincarnated past member.

The game was tense with Steve

Lewis holding a 4 shot lead after 10 ends 8/4 but Shifty Spence picked up shots on 5 of the next 6 ends to take the lead 16/12.

Steve kept plugging away and after picking up 6 shots in 4 ends he was down by just 1 shot, 22/23.

Shifty managed to secure the 2 shots he needed on the next end to take the win 25 shots to 22 in what was a fantastic game.

Congratulations to both players for putting on such a great spectacle for all those that were lucky enough to be there.

Delatite U14s go down to Yarrawonga Mulwala

By MARK O’LOUGHLAN Delatite CC 6/65 lost to Yarrawonga Mulwala CC 2/84 FOR the first time this season, sunny skies awaited the Delatite U14 cricket team as we travelled to Wangaratta for the game against Yarrawonga Mulwala CC.

Skipper Nick Hoskin won the toss and made a positive move, electing to bat first.

The Delatite boys struggled early against some very good bowling, losing a wicket in the first over and runs were very difficult to come by.

Hoskin and his co-captain Orlando Miller dug in and weath-

ered the storm, protecting their teammates coming in after them.

Felix O’Meara smacked three fours on his way to 16 not out to help the team along to 6/65 from the allocated overs.

The bowling innings went in a similar pattern for our boys, with the YMCC batsmen right on top early, followed by a late fightback.

O’Meara and Josh Cook were the wicket takers for Delatite.

It was a much improved bowling and fielding effort this week, with the team conceding half the extras compared to YMCC, taking both catches offered and not letting any balls through the field.

Felix O’Meara was the player of the match; well done Felix.

Greta gets the better in B Grade

By DAVID FOSTER Greta 6/188 defeated Delatite 59 GRETA proved to be far too accomplished for Delatite in a B Grade contest at the Moyhu Recreation Reserve.

Batting first Delatite’s opener and captain Brett Bradley was the only one to cross the double figures line, reaching 17.

The next four batsmen each managed 7 runs, squandering promising starts.

Delatite finished on an underachieving 59.

Pick of Greta’s bowlers was Troy Simpson with 4/10.

Two wickets apiece went to Mick Walker, Tony Welsh and Rory Harvey.

Greta had no trouble reeling in the target which they achieved in the 12th over for the loss of just two wickets.

With another 24 overs remaining they powered on to eventually finish on 6/188.

Mick Barnard led the way with a pugnacious 69 which included 4 sixes.

Also amongst the runs were Troy Simpson 24, Rob Morgans 18, Sam Ritchie 18 not out and Frank O’Brien 16.

Delatite’s ground fielding and catching were excellent but they had a lot of chasing to do.

Of the bowlers Prince Dhiman stood out with 2/18.

Under 14 player Darcy McSweeney made a dream start to his senior career taking a wicket with his very first ball, completing the over with the figures of 1/ 2.

Under 16s Charlie Watts also made his senior debut, bowling with vigour to capture 1/30.

Other single wickets went to Andrew Cook 1/19, Dave Holliday 1/31 and Orlando Miller 1/33.

On Saturday Delatite B is listed to play top of the table YarrawongaMulwala at the Mansfield Recreation Reserve.

Because the ground has been too wet to install the drop-in pitch, the match will have to be shifted elsewhere.

Strong performance from Merton

By ROHAN BERRIMAN MERTON cricketers hosted Rovers United Bruck in perfect conditions at the MCG. Rovers won the toss and batted making 8/154 S.Lakmal top scoring with 54 .

The Merton bowling attack was on top early restricting the visitors to 53 at the halfway drinks break; however, with wickets in hand Rovers accelerated the run rate to make 101 in the last 18 overs.

Merton’s opening bowlers did the job; Jai Mckinnon finished with 2/25, Luke Berriman 1/15, Henry Berriman and Jed Murray both with 2 wickets all bowled well.

Merton’s innings started well with openers Benton and King making 21 for the first wicket.

With the loss of Benton for 15 Luke Berriman and King combined to effectively win the match for their side with a 133 run partnership led by top scorer Berriman with 97 off 87 deliveries, which included 13 fours and 1 six.

Daryl King finished on 34 not out passing Rovers score in the 34th over.

B.Camm and M.Nunn were the two wicket takers.

Merton host second side Benalla next Saturday and currently sit 4th on the WDCA b grade ladder, a victory for the home side critical to stay in touch with the top sides.

1st - Ian Jones 38 pts (h/c 21); 2nd - Shane O’Brien 37 pts (h/c 13); 3rd - Kevin Hall 35 pts (h/c 9) Well done to Ian who has a couple of very good rounds of late, he just shaded out Shane who is on the comeback trail.

Are we seeing single figures soon for Shane?

If so, he will be joining the third placegetter for this date, Kevin Hall who is constantly putting in consistent good scores and is on single figures.

Last week I commented on the consistency of Phil Conway.

True to form he produced a milestone last week.

The highlight of the day was his hole-in-one on the twelfth, a great shot that bounced once on the green and ‘slam dunked’ into the hole.

Phil followed Taki who holed out on the same green last week.

Try to put some odds on that all of you punters.

A Grade 1st - Brendan Egan 39 pts (h/c 16); 2nd - John Saggers C/B 37 pts (h/c 17); 3rd - Peter Valance 37 pts (h/c 7) What to say; everyone’s friend and Mr Nice Guy Louie Egan had a great win playing to thirteen (which is probably his correct handicap), being heavily involved with the racing industry I’m sure that he knows how to manipulate handicaps, particularly, with the upcoming club championships in Feb. Well done by John Saggers one of the large contingent of the Tom Swan morning group, he edged out the mercurial Peter Valance who has been waterlogged in Alex over winter with little chance to practice.

Watch out now, danger, he has gone out a shot.

Great week of golf for Gayle

ACES: Phil Conway had a hole-in-one on the twelfth, a great shot that bounced once on the green and ‘slam dunked’ into the hole.

1st - Luke Murray 44 pts (h/c 20); 2nd - Tom Dunstan 41 pts (h/c 22); 3rd - Chris Kerr 35 pts (h/c 18) Words are difficult to find to give enough accolades to a score of 44 pts for Luke who like Tom, Joel and the two brothers are the new young brigade of outstanding young men finding their way in golf.

Exciting times ahead for the club.

Eight shots under his handicap puts Luke into the low teens.

Likewise, Tom with 41 pts is a replica of Luke above and enjoying a ‘hot’ run.

This is only the start of Tom’s week.

Chris in third, a relatively newcomer to golf shared the same spectacular golf graph over the past two years enabling him to be one of the elite winners of the Nth East handicap championships.

10); 2nd - Rob Fankhauser C/B 69 (h/c 15); 3rd - Aaron Knight 69 (h/c 17) The J.D. Perks best scratch score Rod Sargent - 70.

A spectacular round by Brad only marred by a double on the fourteenth.

Everything was great.

Well nearly.

Great round again by Rob Fankhauser, one shot better than his winning monthly medal score last Saturday, the bank balance is looking very healthy.

Surely this week Rob will lose a shot.

Aaron Knight in third with the same score as Rob. We do not see as much of this likeable young man as we would like, it should happen now as the weather is kinder.

Rod winning the scratch event is like a procession of wins in this event which is dominated by the ‘big’ three which includes Kyle Bridgeman and Mark Jones.

A testament to their practice ethics and determination. Rod is currently our lowest handicapper and played to zero.

B Grade: 1st - Tom Dunstan Net 67 (h/c 22); 2nd - Tom Nicol C/B 69 (h/c 21); 3rd - Wayne Desmond 69 (h/c 29) What a week for young Tom. A monthly medal to cap off his second place on Thursday.

His handicap took a ‘hammering’ as some of his success of late had been stored up by the handicapping system.

The system has caught up with Tom, I believe he lost five shots after this latest success.

Seventeen handicap appears more fitting.

Relief for the rest of us.

Tom won on a countback from Brad Grant.

Second went to Tom Nicol with a fine net 69 which will see him very close to achieving one of his goals as he edges nearer to the ‘teens’, even though he has been there before.

Wayne Desmond in third filled the placings.

Wayne is one of the ‘Sheahan’ gang (or is it Kelly), with his generous handicap he is a Monty to have success in an Ambrose event.

TWENTY eight ladies headed out for our Wednesday comp this week.

Conditions were perfect if you kept the ball down the middle, while our greenkeepers are gradually being able to mow a little further into the rough every day, as areas finally start drying out.

Gayle Wells had a great day out, coming in the overall and Div 1, winner with 38 points.

Runner up in Div 1 was Linda Terry 34 on a countback to third place, Sam Bailey. Div 2 was won by Marion Sargeant with 33 from Louise Calvert-Jones 31 and Marion Foster 30.

Line balls went to a bunch on 33 points Robyn Baker, Marg Knapp and Linda Brook, then Donna Sedgman and Marion Mitchell on 29, Jenny Foster 27 and Glenis Skinner 26.

Nearest the pins went to Gayle Wells (3rd), Andrea Marsden (7th), Patsy Smiles (2nd on 17th) and Robyn Baker (3rd on 18th).

Meanwhile, our Premier League was in its 6th week and the winners were Nug Nugs, Long Putters, Happy Hookers, Out of Towners and the Sloggers.

The Happy Hookers and the Wedgies currently share the lead with two more rounds to go before the semi finals.

Summer 4BBB Pennant was played at Myrtleford on Friday and while their course was just beautiful, it is still a composite 9 hole course due to some holes still being too wet and carts were not allowed.

This meant half our planned team weren’t able to play and some last minute scrambling saw us with five not six players.

Linda Terry took the tough role of playing one against two and didn’t disgrace herself, losing on the 16th.

Patsy Smiles and Linda Brook won on the 18th, and with Lesley Anderson and Lyn Poulson also playing it out to only lose on the 18th, we went down 2/1.

On Saturday, it was time for our November Monthly Medal, sponsored by Delatite Dental.

A great field of 16 turned out, and once again it was the old hand, Gayle Wells who shone with a winning nett 72.

Runner up was Kylie Egan with 74 and 3rd, Shelly Comerford with 76.

Line balls went to Andrea Marsden 76, Millie Cumming 76 and Shirley Nolan 77.

Millie won the nearest the pin on the 3rd.

Delatite falls short against Colts

By PETER SCALES WITH cricket weather finally upon us, Mansfield’s Delatite Cricket Club A grade side travelled to Wangaratta on Saturday to take on City Colts at the nicely turned out HP Barr Reserve.

The visitors sent the Colts into bat upon winning the toss, a decision which paid early dividends with Lachy Scales striking in the first over.

The Delatite bowling was

top-notch, h with i h Scales, l Joe Kelleher, Mitch Purcell and Matt Storer keeping the runs in check.

Colts put excellent 50-run first-wicket partnership, broken by Purcell who rattled the pegs, the score now 2/63.

Veteran Kent Braden entered the fray in his 300th senior match for the Colts, the Delatite team acknowledging this incredible achievement.

Archie Storer was brought

into the his i h attack k with i h hi tweakers and also kept the run rate down, snaring two wickets along the way.

Opening bat Tyler Nanson was eventually dismissed for an impressive 55 by the ageing Peter Scales.

Braden fought on with typical grit and determination to score 44 and raise the total to 145 after 40 overs.

Skipper Mark O’Loughlan opened the Delatite innings with Mitch Copey, the latter

swash-buckling his way to h b kli hi 21 off just 13 balls, to get the visitors off to a flying start.

However, after his dismissal the run-chase bogged down, with Colts bowling a tight line and forcing a number of rash shots.

At the 20 over drinks break the visitors had slumped to 5/60.

Lachy Scales and Purcell steadied with a 30-run partnership before Purcell also skied one.

Three more wickets h i k iin rapid succession brought the game to a seemingly early finish with the score now 9/94.

Scales senior joined Scales junior at the crease and the pair put up a fighting last-wicket stand, giving the Colts a good scare.

However, it was a case of too little too late with Lachy bowled out in the last over for a fighting 44, the side all out for 128.

BP Vantage Fuels l Player l of the Match goes to Lachy Scales for his top-scoring inning and tight bowling of 1/17 off 8 overs.

Next week the team tackles Ovens Valley United.

The match is scheduled to be played at home at Lords, however with the ground still suffering the effects of the wet weather it may have to be shifted and the team may be back on the road again.
