plane and fire fighting training underway for new recruits. Both aircrafts are now based at the Mansfield Airstrip with crews being accommodated as well. On ground level though Maindample CFA captain Vaughan Semler said the brigade was “as prepared
as we will ever be” for the upcoming fire season and training was continuing to ensure everyone was up to date with all equipment. The brigade currently has 12 operational members but could do with a few more - anyone interested can call into the station Sunday morning when training occurs. Last week the brigade received news it will receive $128,333 funding through the Volunteer Emergency

Services Equipment Program (VESEP), enabling it to replace its 10-year-old Slip On vehicle with a new fully-fitted out Ultra Light which will allow more access to steep terrain during bushfires. Maindample has planned a door knock along Glen Creek Road and also will hold a community open day on January 14 where ‘plan and prepare’ materials will be available and information will be
discussed, particularly covering access to remote properties. Community education officer Mary Anne Egan said property owners across the shire should be aware of allowing firefighting trucks easy access to properties - particularly when fast running grass fires occur as time is of the essence. Bonnie Doon CFA is well and truly prepared for the summer onslaught. It has had at least one call
out, with the latest being Sunday night for a building fire on Maintongoon Road. The brigade held an open day on Sunday morning followed by a member’s meeting at which the availability of operational and nonoperational members were noted. ■ Continued page 2 ■ In today’s Mansfield Courier our feature on ‘Plan and Prepare’ for the fire season s on pages 24 - 27.
