A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE: Mt Buller has been giving the season dream of a white Christmas this year for locals in summer.

A white Christmas MOUNT Buller is providing all the magic and fun of a white Christmas season this summer.

Yes, you read that correctly.

There is a giant pile of real snow sitting up in the village ready for snowball battles and snowman building and the thrill and chill of snow - in the middle of summertime.

If you’ve never cooled down after a hike or a mountain bike ride on real snow then you are in for a special treat.

“The whole idea of ‘Snow in summer’ is something we trialled last year and it worked,” said Buller Ski Lifts Mountain Manager Nick Reeves.

“At the close of the snow season in October we stockpiled the real snow from the Bourke Street ski run and kept it under wraps to save it for a special holiday snow play session.

“People find it hard to believe snow can last that long, but with the right care it does.

“I love that the very same snow we had so much fun skiing and boarding on in winter is still bringing smiles and joy for visitors up here in summer.”

The snow play area is located in the village near the Mt Buller Chalet at the bottom of the Bourke Street ski run and access is free for all resort visitors.

The snow is for snow play only (sorry - no skiing folks).

As well as the novelty of mucking around on real snow the resort is offering a family friendly experience each afternoon between 27 Dec and New Year’s with a live DJ and various kids’ activities including a program of childrens’ craft workshops.

On New Year’s Eve the kids can stay and play until 7.30pm with a glitter bar and snow disco to celebrate the New Year.

Mt Buller has experienced plenty of unusual spring and summer snow falls with unseasonal and deep falls in November and ongoing wintry

spells stretching into December.

The resort celebrated the start of this summer with a new Summer Shred Sesh, combining a snow terrain park ride day with the opening of the bike trails.

The Shred Sesh was a huge success and attracted skiers and snowboarders from as far as NSW who came to make the most of the unique opportunity to slide on snow at Mt Buller in December.

Mt Buller is rolling into more traditional summer activities including plenty of bike events in the coming months and welcomes back the rally community with the return of the Targa High Country in February.

Voter numbers continue decline A RECORD number of votes were cast in this year’s State election, but the overall proportion of Victorians casting a vote continues to decline.

The writs for the 2022 State election were returned to the Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau, on Friday marking the conclusion of the 2022 State election.

Some 3,828,791 Lower House votes and 3,877,213 Upper House votes were cast, representing a turnout of 88.14 per cent and 88.23pc respectively.

This is compared to a 90.16pc turnout at the 2018 State Election.

More than half of these were early and postal votes, as voters took advantage of extended hours at 155 early voting centres across the state.

Acting Electoral Commissioner Dana Fleming noted that further research was needed to better understand the reason for the decline.

MOBILE food and beverage traders will be assisting with high volumes of visitation over the Christmas/New Year holiday season around Mansfield Shire.

Mansfield Shire Council engaged local mobile traders to develop a business support initiative after requests from local businesses for assistance to help with the high demand for coffee and snacks.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said Council anticipated higher than usual visitation this summer.

“It’s important that people visiting have a good time, can access food and drink offerings and that we maximise the opportunity for local businesses to ser-

vice the holiday market,” said Cr Tehan.

“With high water levels at Lake Eildon and closures at other popular holiday destinations, we’re set to have higher than usual visitation this year.

“Local traders have requested support to cope with the potential demand in the face of worker shortages.

“Council has worked with existing businesses in locations with anticipated high visitation to come up with this initiative,” said Cr Tehan.

Deadhorse Lane rezoning forges ahead REZONING of land at 104 Deadhorse Lane is set to go ahead, after council recently passed Amendment C54 to the Mansfield Planning Scheme.

The amendment applies to land on the western end of Dead Horse Lane and western side of the Stock Route and will now go before the Minister for Planning for approval.

It proposes to introduce the Neighbourhood Residential Zone, which currently doesn’t exist in the Mansfield Planning Scheme.

The current default is the General Residential Zone, which is defined as being a zone with predominantly three storey developments.

This new zone, being introduced at the request of DELWP, is in accordance with planning practices which indicate that it’s most appropriate for areas with predominantly single storey character.

Council says the amendment seeks to improve the supply, diversity and affordability of land and housing opportunities in town, on land with access to Mansfield township’s facilities.

The amendment aims to assist in meeting projected future housing demand for a growing population in Mansfield.

In addition to the EPA’s request for minor wording changes within council’s explanatory report, there were two objectors to the amendment.

However, council officers resolved the objectors concerns prior to their most recent meeting, enabling the motion to go to a vote.

“Their main concerns were about flood waters and drainage.

“Part of working through their objections was explaining the process of the owner/ developer’s requirements in the future, including building appropriate stormwater and drainage, and the individual planning processes after that, including the levels that houses need to be built at.”

Ms Crane further thanked the objectors for their time and willingness to meet, discuss, and resolve their concerns with council officers.

As floodplain manager, council said the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Au-

thority (GBCMA) has supported the proposed rezoning and deemed the land to be rezoned to be suitable for future residential development.

They said the extent of flood mapping on the property is minimal and isolated to a small section of drainage line/waterway that has a dam constructed in this location on the land.

GBCMA noted that future options to improve drainage in the area identified by the mapping can be “appropriately conditioned through the planning permit process.”

Ms Crane further noted, “The main access to and from the developable area of the allotment will be from the Stock Route.”

“In the short term, access to the Maroondah Highway will be from the Stock Route, but council officers will continue to progress opportunities to divert traffic away from the Station Precinct reserve into the future and into the formal road network.”

Cr Paul Sladdin thanked Ms Crane and her team for the work done on the amendment.

“I want to acknowledge the work of Ms Crane and the planning department in meeting with objectors and resolving their issues,” he said.

Cr Steve Rabie and Cr Rohan Webb echoed these sentiments, and all councillors voted in favour of the rezoning amendment.

AFTER 15 years of delivering many of Mansfield’s babies, Dr. Daniela Friday has decided to step back from obstetrics to concentrate on a new work/ life balance as one of the three partners in the Central General Practice Mansfield.

Reflecting on a rewarding but at times demanding career in obstetrics, Dr Friday believed a change was needed to allow her more time with family and to concentrate on her general practice patients.

“I was consulting fulltime and running the business, with obstetrics on top of that,” she explained.

Dr Friday still wants to use her experience and knowledge to help new mothers with antenatal and postnatal care to continue to look after women in the leadup to the birth and afterwards.

For those mothers who need to go to the Wangaratta Hospital for caesarean birth, Dr Friday will be available to provide support in Mansfield.

The Mansfield & District Hospital is equipped to deal with “low risk” deliveries which do not include multiple or caesarean births, she said.

Dr Friday gained her medical degree in Slovakia in 1996 and met her future husband, a Mansfield local who was travelling overseas, which led to her leaving her homeland for Australia.

She completed a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Mercy Hospital in Melbourne in 2000, followed by the birth of her first child, a daughter now 21 years old.

“I finished my training and then fell pregnant,” she said.

Her second child and a son who is now 18.

There was a move back to Mansfield in 2008, and she believes it is possible to have delivered anywhere from 200 to 300 babies.

She said choosing one memorable experience with so many births was difficult.

“What is most memorable is seeing the joy on parents’ faces when their babies arrive.”

The doctor does admit to sometimes wearing her “active wear” and even her “horse rid-

ing gear” when she has delivered various babies.

On the challenging side, Dr Friday said it can be lonely when you are on your own in the middle of the night and need to do a call out.

Her response to the differences to working in a rural setting was that on the plus side, you get to know your patients and colleagues really well.

The other nice aspect was seeing the children you helped to bring into the world growing up.

“The downside of rural practice is the limited support and hard to escape from your patients living in a small town.”

Dr Friday agreed that obstetrics has altered a lot over the years and has increased the de-

mands of the role due to technology and societal changes.

She is looking forward to taking some extended leave and a well deserved break this week to visit family in Slovakia.

Then returning to general practice in the new year with a renewed passion for helping individuals maintain or achieve positive health outcomes.

Regarding any special acknowledgements, Dr Friday said, “I also want to thank Dr Will Twycross, my colleague and mentor, and the midwives who do an amazing job.”

CRAIG’S HUT OPEN: Visitors can still visit historic Craig’s Hut via Clear Hills Track - despite the Circuit Road remaining closed due to landslides.

Logging on Stirling still unclear CURRENTLY there is no logging on Mt Stirling in all areas, but indications are there could be logging in some areas in the future.

Correspondence received recently by Mt Stirling Environment Manager Louise Perrin (from VicForests Regional Manager) seems to indicate logging of the coupes around Stirling will proceed.

There are no logging trucks on Stirling at present however, Ms Perrin did receive from Peter Scales (VicForests district manager) saying that they are most likely now going to start logging at Stirling in the New Year.

Mr Scales also indicated there would be staff on site from midDecember to the New Year undertaking the VicForests survey requirements.

Ms Perrin said her understanding is that these surveys are the standard ones they do in coupes prior to logging.

However, when asked if logging was to continue on Mt Stirling a VicForests spokesperson said, “VicForests has paused all timber harvesting and commissioned experts to develop a new survey method to comply with the Court’s orders in earlier Supreme Court proceedings.

“There is no set timeline on

when timber harvesting will recommence.”

“There are some sections of roads on Mt Stirling that are nearing completion of being fully repaired.

“VicForests will work with the Alpine Resorts Management Board to confirm when they are deemed safe for use,” the spokesperson said.

Circuit Road between Telephone Box Junction and Howqua Gap on Mt Stirling will remain closed until further notice due to a land slip and significant subsidence needing repairs.”

The extension of Seasonal Trail Closures at Mt Stirling due to the continued poor weather and environmental conditions, Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resorts and DELWP are extending the seasonal closures of tracks accessing the top of Mt Stirling.

However, the following trails were expected to reopen last Friday, December 23: - Howqua Gap Track; - Track over the Summit of Mt Stirling; - Clear Hills Track, south of Craig’s Hut; and - Monument Track.

Holiday arrangements for Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support WITH the holiday season fast approaching, Services Australia is reminding customers about changes to payments and services during the Christmas and New Year period.

All services centres and most phone lines will be closed on Monday, December 26 through to Wednesday, December 28, and on Monday, January 2, 2023.

Services Australia General Manager Hank Jongen said Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support customers can still access self-service options during this period.

“The easiest way to do your business during the holiday season is with your online ac-

counts through myGov, as well as the Express Plus apps, or our self-service options over the phone,” Mr Jongen said.

“These services are available 24/7, even on public holidays.

“This means people can still report their employment income, submit claims, or apply for an advance payment.”

Customers should also be aware the date they receive their regular payments may change.

“We have special arrangements in place for national public holidays. Some people may get paid early and others may be able to report their employment income early,” Mr Jongen said.

“People can check if their reporting or payment date has changed using their Centrelink online account through myGov, or through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

“We know reporting early can be tricky, but my top tip is don’t worry. If you make a mistake, you can correct it within 14 days, or the next time you report.”

Critical services for Medicare providers, such as PBS authorities and organ donor, remain available over this period.

Spreading the joy of Christmas THE Sunday before Christmas the mood was festive and reflective across the Mansfield district from carols at St John’s Anglican Church to the hills of Tolmie at the annual twilight Christmas market.

The carols service led by the new Anglican minister the Rev Mel Clark included many muchloved songs and items by the 16 strong choir.

Attendees were encouraged to light a candle for peace across

the world as the choir presented a traditional Ukranian piece “The Carol of the Bells”.

In Tolmie the MAD orchestra entertained the crowd with Christmas songs accompanied by a group of locals singing at the

pre-Christmas twilight Market.

The weather was perfect for the market for last minute gift buying, or for families and individuals to relax outdoors.

Santa Claus managed to fit in a visit as part of his busy routine.

Social Club opens new pavilion THE completed Tolmie Sports Social Club’s new pavilion is now completed and got a good working out during the Christmas Twilight picnic market on December 18.

Back in September 2021 a group of people got together and started the Tolmie Sport Social Club to be based at the sports ground - and now it has all happened.

A club representative said it came about because the Tolmie Tavern closed over the two year period during COVID and although the Tavern is open sometimes now local residents felt it was not enough.

To keep the social club going it was initially decided to use the facilities at the sports ground but to do so and to gain a liquor license

SPACIOUSNESS: Inside the new Tolmie Sports Social Club’s new pavilion has room for lots of people, a fully licensed bar and wide access to the verandah outside. it needed more people and better facilities.

Over the past winter volunteers got together and built this new pavilion which incorporates a small bar and loads of room ‘and is amazing’.

Starting with 50 members from a public meeting of interest the club needed this number to enable it to pay for its liquor license but ended up with 120 members all in one day.

WELL PATRONISED: Open to the public for the first time on December 18 the Tolmie Sports Social Club rooms provided bar facilities and social activity both inside and outside.

“Just recently we had over 500 members registered coming from Tolmie, Mansfield and all over the place,” the representative said.

“This place is attractive because of its environment

and the community are behind it.”

Up to 60 - 100 people regularly meet on a Sunday afternoon and the regular Thursday nights sees up to 50 people attending.

“The club started in September 2021 and has grown dramatically - we have out of towners and weekendenders and people who live in Tolmie,” the representative said.

The pavilion will also provide the community with an alternative meeting place.

“There has been quite an array of people and tradies who have contributed their time and expertise in building the new facility - some donating up to 500 hours of work into it,” the representative said.

“It has been a phenomenal event,” he said.

“It is what this community is all about and it has been nice to recognize the contributions made to this club and this new facility,” he said.

School holiday activities for Mansfield’s youth A RANGE of free activities are being offered to Mansfield Shire’s young people aged 12-17 and 18-25 years of age over the school holidays.

The youth program calendar runs from January 11 to 25 January, 2023.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said the activities and events have been developed with a view to keeping our young people entertained and connected.

“Ensuring our young people are provided with opportunities to connect with others is one of

the objectives of Council’s Youth Strategy and Action Plan,” he said.

“The Youth Program Team have put together a wide range of activities including yoga in the park, a pool party, and a circus workshop delivered

by Flying Fruit Fly Circus, all ensuring there is something that will appeal to everyone.

“Other highlights include the North East Skate Park Series competition to be held in Mansfield on January 15 with competitors aged between 12

and 25 years of age.

“Council respects diversity and values inclusion.

New fire unit for Tolmie CFA TOLMIE Fire Brigade recently took delivery of the 100th new standard-build FCV at a community open day.

More than 50 Tolmie brigade volunteers, community members, plus DELWP and SES members attended.

As well as receiving the FCV, more than 15 brigade members were presented with service awards.

CFA recently completed the production of the 100th standard-build field command vehicle (FCV), which is based on a Ford Ranger.

The Ranger has been evaluated to ensure it meets CFA’s capability requirements and provides a high

level of safety and durability.

The standard build FCV is built on a Ford Ranger XL 4x4 cab chassis, with additional features including snorkel, dual batteries, fridge, all-terrain tyres, bull bar, whiteboards, innovative equipment stowage solutions, fire extinguisher and 360-degree emergency lighting.

A new feature in the latest model has the flexibility to relocate the Tait radio microphones from the cabin to the body.

This allows operators to take advantage of the incident management capability built into the body - whiteboards and workspaces can be accessed without

having to use portable radios during incidents.

Cabin accessories include two Tait radios, reversing camera, portable radio charger, additional 12V charging points, flashing headlights and siren.

District 23 Assistant Chief Fire Officer Rod Railton supports a standard FCV fleet.

“We have many FCVs across the district in rural and urban environments and the standard-build FCV will cater for all needs,” he said.

“The more standardisation we can have across our vehicles, the easier it is for our people to work across different brigade and

group boundaries.”

CFA Manager Fleet Operations Tim Smith said standardbuild program provides many benefits to brigades, including regulatory compliance, economies of scale and compliance with procurement policy.

These benefits are achieved by a CFA project managing the entire build, relieving brigade members from the arduous task of independently procuring a vehicle.

The standard FCV can be fully funded by brigades or through grant programs such as the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program.

MANSFIELD swimming pool is set for a bumper season with a 96 per cent sell-out rate for swimming lessons this season.

Due to the demand, further classes will be offered for an eight week program in the New Year.

Belgravia Leisure, who is managing the facility on Mansfield Shire Council’s behalf, offered 18 different classes for children aged between five and 12 years, catering for all levels of experience.

However, no lessons will be held between December 19, 2022 and January 9, 2023, but students will receive free general access to the facility during the main Christmas break.

Mayor Cr James Tehan was pleased to see such strong interest in the classes.

“Learning to swim at an early age is vital to ensure the safety of our community given our warm summers and proximity to lakes and rivers,” he said.

“Council is pleased that the demand for this service is being met by Belgravia Leisure as they enter the second season of managing the facility.

“The weather is still cool but already attendance has been strong with 431 people using the facility in the first 10 days of opening.

“We anticipate that this will continue throughout the season.”

Following the reduction in opening hours last season due to staffing levels and COVID-19, the pool hours have returned to pre-COVID times and will be open every day until March 19, 2023 with the exception of Christmas Day. Pool users can pay per visit or take up the option to purchase an individual or family season pass which are available to purchase online following the prompts on the pool website - mansfieldswimmingpool.com.au During the winter period, upgrades and maintenance have taken place to ensure the facility continues to meet community needs.

Let’s not lose a valuable community asset

THE Mansfield Community is at risk of losing a valuable asset and community communication broadcaster.

Established in 1995 under the guidance of UGFM (Alexandra), Radio Mansfield 99.7 has been a part of this community’s broadcasting for the past 27 years, but is at risk of closing due to lack of volunteers.

Radio Mansfield secretary, Lyn Holland, said last November’s AGM was postponed due to lack of nominations for committee positions.

The AGM has been reset for January 18, 2023 and hopefully some people may come forward to take on a committee position and help

to retain this community service.

Over the past few months the committee dwindled down to four members including president, Miriam Zolin, Secretary Lyn Holland and committee members, Dallas Daniels and Mitchell Clark.

“We lost four members in a matter of months, two went off travelling around Australia and two others moved to Queensland,” Ms Holland said.

“This radio station cannot operate without a full committee, we struggle to get everything done that needs doing, after all we are all volunteers.

“We desperately need to fill the position of treasurer and replace at least two committee members.

“IT WOULD BE SUCH A PITY TO SEE THIS RADIO STATION WIND UP AFTER 27 YEARS”

“We can work with a smaller committee but then again we have in the past had up to 10 on the management committee.”

Many of the committee positions fill the behind the scenes roles, such as maintaining the music library, cleaning, and even becoming a buddy to others.

One of the buddy positions is help younger members of the community come in and either help out or become presenters.

The youngest member of the crew at present is only eight years old and presenter’s ages reach to the more senior years.

Three more new presenters are being trained and will soon be heard on the airwaves.

And presenters are from all walks of life, school teachers, business executives, sports lovers and just plain music enthusiasts.

Ms Holland said like all other volunteer organisations, the radio station needs those behind the scenes people to run it smoothly.

“They don’t have to become presenters and be on air, we just need people to do the little jobs around the studio,” she said.

Radio Mansfield currently maintains a high profile within the community with interviews, news, community announcements, all genres of music and also support many other organisations as well.

“We work hand-in-hand with many committees and

organisations around the district such as SES, Agricultural Society, Police, politicians - even with the Mansfield Courier in keeping up with news.

“In particular we are there as an Official Emergency Broadcaster keeping local residents informed when there are fires, floods or other emergencies,” Ms Holland said.

“It would be such a pity to see this radio station wind up after 27 years - the community would lose so much,” she said.

Financially the radio station is okay, better than for the past three years, and recently received a grant to help in upgrading and maintaining its specialised equipment.

Radio Mansfield 99.7 was

first established by a group of enthusiasts under the guidance of Peter Weeks from Alexandra (UGFM).

The first home for the radio station was in the old station master’s house, where the Visitor Information Centre now stands.

The second home was in High Street in a shop front, but following a fire, was moved to the Community Centre in Erril Street, occupying what was formerly a childminding centre.

It now boasts two recording studios as well as administration areas.

When not presenting directly from Mansfield, broadcasting is heard from either UGFM or the Community Broadcasting network from across Australia.

Christmas came early for Merton MERTON will soon enjoy new a skatepark at the Merton Recreation Reserve thanks to a $20,000 grant awarded through Mansfield Shire Council’s Outlying Communities Infrastructure Fund.

A generous donation of training equipment from the family of Hayley Wilson (Mansfield’s Street Skate Olympian) will be utilised by the community and may be retained for inclusion in the project.

The Merton Commu-

nity has already started the design process for the skatepark which should take less than 12 months to complete.

The skatepark will provide a space that encourages activity and a more inclusive and connected experience for the Merton community members and families.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said the skatepark was an initiative of the Merton community who came up with the idea for a space for the community and families to

meet, feel connected and fits well within the vision of the Merton Recreation and Memorial Reserves Inc. “Council is really happy to provide funding for community-led projects that add to the amenity of towns,” he said.

“Projects like this receive funding through our Outlying Communities Infrastructure Grant as they improve the town’s infrastructure in a way that can also contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community by keep-

ing them active and connected.

“I join the Merton community in thanking the Wilson family for their incredibly generous donation that will add significantly to the project.”

After hearing the news of the grant project, the family of Hayley Wilson contacted the Merton Community group to donate pieces to the town for inclusion in the skatepark.

said the Merton community has been surprised and thrilled by the Wilson family’s generous donation of Hayley’s skateboard training equipment.

“Hayley’s family heard about our skate park project here in Merton and offered us the surplus equipment — it’s so exciting,” she said.

Marat Minikhanov, a young member of the Merton Community said this was great news for the community.

“Now the skaters of Mer-

ton and surrounds will have somewhere to meet and skate while we build our permanent skate park with the Mansfield Shire Council grant.”

Merton is in the process of developing a plan that considers the long-term vision for its community.

Community members are encouraged to view the draft Plan to learn what’s been proposed to help define the future development, character and layout of the town.

LAST week The Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party of Victoria (SFFP) outlined their support towards recommending a full legislated duck season and bag limit for 2023.

As her first job she will write to Premier Daniel Andrews along with the environment and agriculture ministers this week expressing her views and intentions to bring about an end to duck shooting for good.

Hailing from the Macedon Ranges, the law degree graduate Ms Purcell is no stranger to politics having been chief of staff for Western Victoria MP Andy Meddick in the last term of parliament.

“I feel very lucky because there are quite a few newbies going in and at the very least I know my way around the joint and know a bit about procedure and process so it’s probably not as daunting for me as some people,” she said.

“My number one priority kicking off the term is getting a ban on duck shooting as it’s something we’ve worked really hard on in the

last off parliament l t term t li t as well.

“We think we’re very, very close to make things happen.

“I’ll be writing to the premier, the environment minister, agriculture minister this week to make sure they don’t have a duck hunting season.

“We have a crossbench that is very progressive on animal issues so I’m hoping to work with them on securing that commitment from the government.”

The number of ducks killed every year is unknown due to the spread and number of locations where ducks can be hunted.

“What we do know is about half the birds that are shot are not immediately killed and many are not retrieved by hunters,” she said.

“It’s not just about the cruelty of killing wildlife that’s protected year-round until the duck hunting season, it’s about the ongoing suffering of the birds that are shot and not found by rescuers like myself who go out as volunteers on the wetlands to find

birds that are left to suffer.

“In every state that duck shooting has been banned (WA, NSW and SA) it has been Labor governments that have done it and we see no reason why the Victorian Labor Government can’t do the same.”

Some other items in Ms Purcell’s four-year vision include a subsidised healthcare system for animals called Veticare, more support for the plant-based food industry, and a ban to jumps racing.

“We’re facing a veterinary crisis in Victoria and it’s particularly felt in regional and rural areas where it’s not only hard to get a vet appointment but the prices are going up as well,” she said.

“We want to see the establishment of public veterinary clinics in all regional areas of Victoria that anyone has access to and supporting the recruitment of more vets.”

Plant-based meat has had success and Ms Purcell said this is great for the environment and animals.

“They create jobs and there is a really good success

story in Wodonga called V2, a plant-based protein factory that is in every major supermarket chain in Victoria and in every Hungry Jacks store across the country,” she said.

“They’ve just started exporting overseas and they’ve created dozens of jobs in Wodonga so I’m keen to see more investment and support for that industry, particularly as we try and find new ways to fight climate change.”

A ban on jumps racing is on her agenda as Victoria is the only state not to eradicate it.

She said jumps racing is 19 times more dangerous than flat horse racing based on the fall, death and injury rate for horses.

“It’s broadly unpopular not just in the Victorian community but there has been signalling that jumps racing gives the rest of the industry a bad name,” she said.

“It’s propped up and supported by taxpayer money and it’s something I believe Victorians don’t want their taxes to be spent on.

“We call ourselves the

progressive state but we’re very much behind on a lot of animal welfare issues so I am really keen to get us up to speed with other states on these issues,” she said.

With 11 on the Upper House crossbench, Ms Purcell is expecting some success in getting legislation across the line.

“What’s very exciting to me about this parliament compared to the last one, the crossbench has a very progressive sense to it, as it doesn’t have the very conservative element to it that the last one did,” she said.

“With the support of the Legalise Cannabis, the Greens and the Animal Justice Party, I feel really confident we’ll be able to work together on all of our priorities because we’re on the same page on many issues including animal protection.

“Victorians have voted for progressive and positive change and the government can feel comfortable to do the things we’re calling on them to do.”

First elect for Northern Victoria, Liberal MP Wendy

Lovell, did say recently that the next four years would be interesting with the likes of the Animal Justice Party in the house which holds different ideologies to many constituents - a view that leans to the right.

However, Ms Purcell said she was open to any MP’s views in trying to achieve amicable and productive outcomes.

Merrijig CFA prepares for fire season THE CFA Merrijig Brigade is holding an open day on Saturday January 7, 2023 with the aim of educating residents and visitors on fire awareness and preparedness.

And although it will be the beginning of January for this open day it is not too late to do your preparations for fire safety.

The Fire Season planning session is being held at the Merrijig Community Hall, Alpha Street, (opposite the primary school) and will include a barbecue, raffles, displays of fire trucks and equipment and more.

Starting at 10am the feature display will the brigade’s new ultralight and quick fill truck.

Children can have their photos taken on the Merrijig CFA fire truck as well.

A explanation by brigade members on how fires behave and the precautions you should take to avoid being caught up in a bush fire will also be included in the planning session.

Explaining the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System will also be held along with how to prepare you family’s fire plan - something every household should have.

Included in the planning session will be how to prepare you property for the fire season and how to respond in case of a local fire incident (bush fire).

Booklets and pamphlets on how to prepare and deal with the upcoming fire season will be available.

The fire planning session and demonstrations are expected to conclude around 2pm.

Botanic Park Masterplan out for community review THE draft Botanic Park Masterplan is now out for community consultation on Engage Mansfield.

The Draft Plan is a map which considers improvements to the existing Botanic Park and how to best use the additional land which was donated to Mansfield Shire Council by John Canavan earlier in 2022.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said it was important that the consulta-

tion for the Botanic Park Masterplan was thorough.

“The aim of the Masterplan is to provide a vision for how the park will look and function in the long term,” said Cr Tehan.

“We consulted over a long period and spoke to many park users, all of whom took the time to consider how we can best develop the park in the future.

“We heard that people wanted

to retain the park’s openness, to make better spaces for both people and animals to use the park safely and create spaces that make the park welcoming and accessible.

“The consultants have delivered a Masterplan that we believe fits the bill.

“It includes more picnic shelters for people to gather, more bins, signage and seats, consideration of events and how we can

accommodate food trucks, more car parking, a fence around the playground and additional gardens, such as a dementia friendly garden.

“I encourage everyone to go online and have a look at the new plan and tell us what you think,” said Cr Tehan.

More trails to open on Mt Buller

MOUNTAIN bikers at Mt Buller got their Christmas wish last week with confirmation the gravity trails are re-open for downhilling from 27 December.

Gravity trails on the northern slopes including ABOM, International and Outlaw are cleared and poised to open for the peak summer riding season.

Blue Dirt Shuttles provide shuttle services 7-days throughout the peak summer window and are starting to see an uptick in bookings as word spreads in the riding community.

“There is plenty of builtup anticipation and everyone is fired up to finally get back on Buller’s gravity trails. We’ve got shuttles ready to get people up to the top and maximise their riding,” said Blue Dirt’s Brett Hollis who operates a bike café and the shuttle service

from Mt Buller’s village.

“It’s been a quiet start to this summer with the crazy snow falls putting a dampener on riders plans, but now the gravity trails are opening and summer weather is kicking in we expect to see plenty of crew checking out the trails for themselves,” he added.

“We are ready to welcome riders to Buller and offer a top-class riding experience on free trails.”

The Mt Buller trail network is generating a buzz in riding circles as positive industry reviews of the upgraded trails are filtering out and riders are putting Mt Buller squarely on their summer wish lists.

Riders preparing for the upcoming Victorian Downhill Mountain Bike Series which starts at Mt Buller on 14-15 January are eager to clock up runs

ahead of the competition.

With the support of $1.2m of Victorian Government tourism grant monies, the refurbishments have elevated the standard of Mt Buller’s vast 100km trail network.

A majority of the 40km of dedicated single track was given an overhaul last year and in the past couple of months the resort’s trail crew has been working tirelessly to clear snow, tree fall and finesse the trails ready for summer riding and upcoming bike events and races.

Mt Buller has over 100kms of trails for mountain biking including 40km dedicated single track, and is home to the iconic Australian Alpine Epic (45kms), Stonefly (10kms) and the popular Delatite River Trail that sweeps from Mt Buller down to the lush green lawns of Mirimbah Park.

North East regional news in brief Chiltern playspace revamp on the cards A CONCEPT to build a state-of-the-art playspace along the banks of Chiltern’s Lake Anderson has been labelled “visionary” ahead of being opened for public comment for the next 60 days.

The plans were put before Indigo Shire Council at last Tuesday night’s December meeting, with concepts boasting a climate focus with a climbing frame resembling rainbows and clouds, sensory stormwater play, a yearround recreational pool and thermal hot pools, and consolidated skate park and pump track.

The park would also feature all ability access.

A motion put forward

by Cr Emmerick Teissl to open the concepts for public comment was carried by a five-person majority on Tuesday.

Councillor Diane Shepheard also threw her support behind the initiative, which she said could attract families from within and outside of Indigo Shire.

Fatal collision at Wunghnu A MAN has died after being hit by a vehicle at Wunghnu, north of Shepparton, last Sunday night.

Police believe the male pedestrian was struck on the Goulburn Valley Highway just before 10.30pm on December 18 and died at the scene.

The Crime Statistics Agency data shows that in the year to September 2022 there were 1607 incidents recorded per capita (100,000 people) in Wangaratta with criminal damage incidents falling by 171, and there were 149 fewer breaches of family violence orders.

Family violence incidents dropped by 4.6pc, however, Wangaratta still has some work to do in reducing

family violence, as incidents compared to the state average per capita were alarming at 2066.4 in Wangaratta compared to the Victorian rate of 1387.9.

Out of the affected family members 436 were female and 183 were male in Wangaratta, with the highest number, 148 people in the 35-44 year old age group, and the second highest, 128 people in the 25-34 age group.

Thefts increased by 124 incidents, there were 89 more breaches of bail conditions, and 80 more sexual offences were reported compared to the previous year.

There were a total of 2210 offences recorded in the Wangaratta area in 2022 with more than half (52.1pc) progressing to an arrest/ summons and 26.9pc remaining unsolved, according to the data.

IN THE Strathbogie local government area, the number of family violence incidents decreased by 10.3pc, although the region still has a higher incident rate compared to the Victoriawide data.

The family incident rate for Strathbogie was 1431 incidents per 100,000 people, compared to the Victorian rate of 1373.5 incidents.

The total number of family violence incidents in the region was at 165, down from the 184 recorded in 2021.

Women were the most affected party of the incidents, with 122 of the 165 incidents having women as the impacted family member.

The most affected age group in the region was people aged 35-44, who were represented in 55 of the incidents reported, while 18 incidents affected people aged 17 and under.

Family violence related ambulance and emergency department presentations across the state also decreased this year following a period of elevation.

FROM an evolutionary perspective, the normal social play of children involves children of various ages.

This often exists in families with multiple children, but what happens when children attend care, kindergarten and school ?

These environments often segregate children by age, losing the extended learning opportunities from other children.

As psychologist Dr Peter Gray explains, in age-mixed play, the more sophisticated behavior of older children offers role models for younger children, who also typically receive more emotional support from older children than from those near their own age.

Age-mixed play also permits older children to learn by teaching and to practice nurturance and leadership; and they are often inspired by the imagination and creativity of their younger playmates.

The picture of a group of children all nearly the same age playing in a school yard may seem familiar to modern eyes, but it’s an odd image from the long perspective of human cultural and evolutionary history.

As anthropologist Melvin Konner pointed out more than ɎǝǣȸɎɵ‫ٮ‬ˡɮƺ ɵƺƏȸɀ ƏǕȒً ȵǼƏɵ ƏȅȒȇǕ

Heavenly art in Jammo church

By CARMEL DIXON JAMIESON Heavenly Art’s and Garden’s (prior Gallery on Nash) are now situated at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Grey Street Jamieson.

The Mansfield Shire acknowledged the application for a grant by them in the Outlying Community Infrastructure Projects.

The former Gallery on Nash artisans, realising the room needed by the Jamieson Museum was becoming urgent, made an application to the Shire for support to move to St Peter’s church and grounds.

Following the permission from the church hierarchy, the application was submitted and the Grant of $10,000 was approved.

The move was monumental and carried out by volunteers.

Artist Julie Guppy with her husband Alan created the garden centre, with a local builder making all of the fencing and gates.

Glass artist Julia Dunn with her husband Frank created the inside gallery and the placement of the art pieces.

Mansfield Coordinator for Community Development Clare Berghofer came to Jamieson to appraise the successful

move and all of the coordinates involved.

The financials are in order and the only structure waiting is the arrival of the water tank and connection.

The team of Di Kilford, Julia Dunn, Ann-Mare Vague, Julie Guppy and Daphne Kay, were hoping for delivery on Tuesday Dec 20th.

The new gallery has been a great success easy walking distance and in a lovely setting in the heart of Jamieson.

The church is separated from the art gallery with the centre aisle and screens creating a chapel-like effect.

For services i.e. weddings, funerals, the displays of art works are easy to move and also placed behind screens and extra seating is available for larger groups.

Clare was delighted with the elegance and presentation and the quality of the local artisans work, plus the complete financial presentation in order and accurate.

The committee offered thanks to the Anglican Church for providing their beautiful church and grounds.

This new venture is creating great interest and is the latest jewel in the Jamieson Crown.

It was a Merry Christmas in Jamieson JAMIESON ON THE LINE with Carmel Dixon

AT THE end of the school year the students and staff at Jamieson primary school have enjoyed some fun outside and the Jamieson CFA tanker arrived with CFA members to enjoy and add some more excitement with ‘fun with water’.

All of the students had water pistols and were enjoying the warm sunny day, when the CFA tanker arrived.

The students were delighted with the surprise visit and were all sprayed with water, as they vigilantly squirted the CFA team, amid squeals of delight.

Following the hilarious afternoon, the CFA tanker and team left and the students commenced preparations for their annual school concert that evening.

It was a beautiful summer evening and the Jamieson school looked a picture, with the concert stage on the basketball court.

The surrounding fencing was adorned with stage props the students had built, painted and fixed to the surrounding wire fencing.

The audience was greeted with handmade programs welcoming all to the Jamieson Primary School Circus 2022.

A large group of local residents, parents of students and friends of the school, were seated on the terraced area under the shade structure with a ringside view.

The event commenced with the welcoming address from the Principal Hannah Madden.

Hannah thanked her staff for their support, the children for their endeavour and development skills, academic and humanitarian, the School Council and the families loyalty, who answered the call without question and the extraordinary fund raising endeavours of the whole school and the community.

A tinge of sadness farewelling Joel Wilson whose teaching tenure at Jamieson has been completed.

A welcome to the new staff members followed.

They threw, caught and spun hoops, tumbled, summersaulted, jumped, threw and caught paper balls all with speed - as each group ran off the stage, the next were performing.

An amazing show of continuity, accuracy and showmanship.

Following the ‘circus’ event, the students’ awards were presented and each student received an award for their individual achievements, growth and leadership during the past year.

Following the presentations, there was an address and thank you from the school Council President Bec Bolwell Heron.

The students performed three folk stories; Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood, all stories rewritten with dry humour and hysterically comedic performance.

The concert was a great success with the audience crying with laughter.

FOLLOWING the Christmas revelry the Jamieson Brewery and Grill will be open over the New Year with ‘Rossa’ entertaining the patrons on New Year’s Eve and the popular band Frozen Blues, playing on New Year’s Day ST PETER’S Anglican Church in Jamieson, will hold their first service for 2023 on New Year’s Day at 11:30 am.

The Rev Mel Clark will conduct the service.

January JANUARY 12: Large crowds turn up in their summer finest to enjoy a great day of picnic racing with the return of the Mansfield Hygain Cup. Local Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan scored a popular win in the last race of the day with his horse Outrich which was ridden by Raymond Douglas.

Year 12 students from Mansfield’s Steiner School celebrated an exceptional achievement, with the group of six averaging an ATAR score of 91.3, with two students attaining an impressive 97.9.

JANUARY 19: Junior vaccinations rolled out at the Mansfield COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic, with children aged five to 11 eligible for their first shot of the Pfizer vaccine.

Running three sessions a week, the clinic vaccinates between 80 and 90 kids per session, with the service booked out until the end of January.

The Mansfield Emergency Precinct Committee (MEP) along with the Mansfield Shire Council support the use of the old saleyards site as an emergency services precinct and determine it a priority project.

JANUARY 26: Lightning strikes wreak havoc across the shire with Ancona-farmers Tom and Heather Ingpen losing stock to the weather event.

A paddock fire in Maindample is triggered by the reignition of a lightning strike with seven CFA vehicles in attendance The Uniting Church and Anglican Church plan to sell their respective buildings in Bonnie Doon.

February FEBRUARY 2: Margaretanne Hood, the COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic project manager, is announced as the 2022 Mansfield Shire Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day ceremonies.

This year Mansfield’s official Australia Day celebration and ceremonies were held in the Botanic Park, with proceedings kicked off by Mayor James Tehan, with the ceremony followed by a beach themed party.

FEBRUARY 9: Primary schools and kindergartens across the town welcome an influx of students, with record numbers enrolled at Mansfield Primary School and the Mansfield Kindergarten, with other education providers also experiencing an increase in enrolments across the board.

The council is awarded a $300,000 grant toward community and economic recovery projects from the Victorian Government, with the council asking for community input to draw up a project plan that will support local businesses, increase visitation and draw people outdoors.

FEBRUARY 16: Despite past COVID reschedules, racing resumed over the weekend in Mansfield with Targa returning to the High Country.

Mansfield’s own David Blunden took a second place podium with co-driver Jaidyn Gluskie in the Early Modern category.

Mansfield Steiner School welcomed new principal Glenn Hood following a fond farewell to Fran Cummins, who’d been at the school’s helm for the past couple of decades.

The afternoon commenced with speakers from community-based organisations that focus on supporting farmers and building

knowledge and resilience in rural communities.

This included Peter Costello from the Victorian Farmers’ Federation’s Making our Farms Safer Program, Lana Young from the National Emergency Authority and Nicole Wells from NCN Health and Rural Aid. Fran Quintella from Indigo Energy talked about growth in the community energy market and the importance of investing locally.

Following a short break, filled with much chatter, engagement and networking, attendees heard from a stellar panel, with each panelist sharing their leadership story and reflecting on key messages for their fellow rural women.

Fourth Generation North East Dairy Farmer and Deputy Chair of AgBiz Assist, Karen Maroney talked about the importance of being open to opportunities, advocating for yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone.

Mixed outcomes in delayed harvest THE dour spring experienced across south east Australia will see harvesters working well into January across much of North East Victoria according to Lilliput crop grower Andrew Russell.

Mr Russell is the managing director and a shareholder of Lilliput AG, a sister company of Baker Seeds, a familyowned farming and seed cleaning business.

He is also chair of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) southern panel.

The family farms around 2500 hectares just south of Rutherglen with crops this year of fava beans, canola, wheat and triticale.

He spoke last Friday just before getting onto the header to attack the canola crop.

“We’re a good three weeks behind where we’d like to be,” he said.

“It’s due to the extremely mild and wet spring we’ve had, it’s the wettest spring we’ve experienced with the highest amount of rainfall in our records (going back more than 30 years).

“It puts a bit of pressure on.

“We need moisture to grow our crops but not this much.”

The annual rainfall for the farm is 590mm but this year they have blown that out of the water recording 1050mm.

He said the wet weather had seriously impacted the canola yield which, in many areas, had been dramatically reduced due to water-logging.

“Where the drainage is good the yields have been exceptional, it’s very much high and lows, with the lowest of the lows the crops have died,” he said.

“The year was looking so promising but since August and through September and October it just kept raining.”

Mr Russell was hopeful the cereal crops including the wheat would not be as impacted as severely as the canola and, with a week of relative sunshine under the belt and more forecast, he expected to be harvesting that early this week.

“Like most farmers, we’ve had to be fairly adaptable due to the weather; we’re direct heading the canola instead of the usual windrows this year,” he said.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor and Euroa local Councillor Laura Binks provided her perspective on being the mayor of a small regional council.

She discussed the importance of regional leadership in the transition to more sustainable industries, and that passion and empathy were both critical to driving positive change.

Mr Russell said their team of eight, mainly family members, would be working right through Christmas except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. “We’ll be harvesting well and truly into mid to late January,” he said.

“As a rule we’ll have Christmas and Boxing Day off, we still have to function as families, so hopefully we’ll get a good spell when we get the crop off.”

The eight person team includes two adult children on breaks from university, James who is studying agribusiness at CSU Wagga Wagga, and Pippa, who is studying design and business.

“We’re happy to be going at all,” Mr Russell said.

“They have always helped out during the school holidays.

“Harvest is an enjoyable time of year, it’s busy and it’s where you reap the fruits of your labour.”

As an emerging leader in agriculture, Jade demonstrated the importance of investing in our next generation and providing opportunities for training and development.

Jade is the Victorian Participant of the 2022 Lead HER Program, delivered by Australian Women in Agriculture with generous support from Trimble Agriculture and facilitator Jo Eady.

Jade highlighted the importance of authenticity in leadership, a trait she values as an emerging leader and one she seeks in mentors and industry leaders.

AWiA Victorian Director, Sarah Parker said that the event was a huge success with feedback from attendees overwhelmingly positive.

“Attendees felt motivated and energised by the impressive speakers and the company of kindred spirits all supported by great food, with the room abuzz with conversation,” she said.

James wins gold with all-time great run SCOTTY James has made an incredible start to the season, performing one of the finest runs in halfpipe history to score an amazing 99.00 points from the judges to win gold at the World Cup event in Copper Mountain, USA. The two-time Olympic medallist threetime World Champion had the two highest scoring runs of the day, posting a 97 point first run, and went even better in run two with a massive score of 99 from the judges.

With the win guaranteed, James performed a victory lap for his third and final run, high fiving the crowd on his way down the halfpipe to the finish line.

James’ run included a switch McTwist to start, followed by a cab double cork 1440, frontside 1080, cab 900 and switch backside double cork 1260 to finish, giving James the seventh World Cup victory of his career.

“Definitely the highest score I have ever gotten in my life, and I am not going to lie, it might be one of the most satisfying runs

I have ever done,” said the Mt Buller product.

“We worked pretty hard on the switch McTwist and I have to say I felt like I got some soul back,” he added.

“The progression is so rapid these days, and I am really happy to be a part of that, but I also thought that I wanted to make some new additions with some creativity, and as we say as snowboarders get the soul.”

Behind James on the podium was Swiss rider Jan Scherrer with a best run of 96.25 points and Kaishu Hirano of Japan in third with a score of 88.25.

Australian teen sensation Valentino Guseli, who’s visited and won an event on Mt Buller this past season, made a strong start in his first halfpipe event of the season qualifying for finals in second place, but had to settle for seventh in the final with his best score of 82.50 coming in his first run.

Bowlers keep on the rinks through break ALTHOUGH Ovens & Murray Pennant bowls is having a short break over the Christmas holiday season it does not mean that bowlers stop playing.

Social bowls is continuing after the break Christmas and Boxing day and will be held on Friday afternoon (December 29) and then on Tuesday morning (January 3) and Friday afternoon (January 6).

Home Pennant and O&M pennant resumes their seasons on January 10.

The 2022 Olympic champion recorded the seventh World Cup victory of her career, in yet another dominant performance leading from start to finish, moving through all three rounds of the competition in first place.

Competing under sunny skies in the French Alps, the NSWIS skier had the highest turn and jump points in the final to score 79.70 points to finish 3.89 points ahead of French skier Perrine Laffont

while American Elizabeth Lemley took third with 74.75 points.

“Three competitions and three wins on this course is pretty crazy,” said the 24-year-old Mt Buller skier.

“It’s heaps of fun in there, it doesn’t look as hard as it is, it’s pretty difficult to ski in there so you really have to be on your game.”

In the men’s event, all three Australians made finals, led by 2018 Olympic silver medallist and 7-time ABOM trophy on Mt Buller, Matt Graham, who narrowly missed advancing to the super-final in seventh place, with teammates Cooper Woods and Jackson Harvey recording strong

qualifying performances but both made mistakes in the final to finish in in 15th and 16th place respectively.

In the dual moguls event, Jakara Anthony made it a double medal weekend with a bronze medal finish on day two, and has found the podium in four of the five moguls events this season.

In the semi-final round Anthony narrowly went down to eventual winner Anri Kawamura with a score of 19-16 in the Japanese skier’s favour.

In the dual for third place, Anthony rebounded strongly to take the bronze medal with a score of 22-13 against Avital Carroll from Austria.

Perrine Laffont from France finished in second.

“I am very happy to be walking away with a third place today” said Anthony, who is currently ranked number one in the world on the overall moguls World Cup standings.

“The women’s field is so strong, and myself, Perrine and Anri keep tossing around those top few spots, so it’s pretty exciting to see that keep switching up and keeping it fresh the whole tour again.”

The mogul skiing World Cup tour will resume in North America in late January, with the first event being a double event in Val St Come, Canada.

U12 cricketers play through sunshine and wintery winds

By ANDREW COOK MANSFIELD’S U12s game on Wednesday was played in weather alternating between glorious sunshine and blasts of wintery winds, with a rain delay half way through.

Most of our batters got amongst the runs this week, most notably Jack Jacobs with the top score of 16, including two fours and a very rare five.

A few of our bowlers had their first real game this week, so there was a bit of learning on the job but the wickets were still shared around, with 8 taken overall.

Most notably Finnigan Stokes bowled three overs and a runout occurred in each of them.

An after-game BBQ finished off the year and we are looking forward to many more games in 2023 when the season recommences in February.

The year that was in sport for 2022 AFTER a COVID-hampered two years of sporting events, Mansfield Shire’s sporting scene sprung back to life over the past twelve months.

Amid a number of highs and lows, there was a general feeling of a passion and gratitude permeating through all of the sporting clubs and different codes.

The following captures each week in sport for 2022, a brief reflection before we look forward to next year.

January JANUARY 12: Large crowds turned out in their summer finest to enjoy a great day of picnic racing with the return of the Mansfield Hygain Cup. Veteran Carrum Downs trainer Ray Caldwell took out the $7000 Mansfield Cup with his five year old mare Material Mistress ridden by jockey Melinda McDonald.

Mansfield Basketball were thrilled to host their first ever Country Basketball League (CBL) men’s game on Saturday, January 8 at the Secondary College Stadium.

JANUARY 19: Delatite Cricket Club travelled to Benalla to take on the Bushrangers, who reached the visitors target with three wickets in hand and 10 overs to spare.

And claiming wins over long-time Mansfield sporting rivals Wangaratta and Myrtleford, the weekend of was a strong showing from the Eagles CBL team in their first home appearance.

JANUARY 26: Mount Buller trained snowboarder Scotty James was set to head to the Beijing Olympic Winter Games full of confidence, after winning gold in the Halfpipe at the X-Games in Aspen, USA. And after a humiliating loss to Benalla the week before, the Delatite first XI bounced back in the best possible way, recording a magnificent win against powerhouse team Yarrawonga-Mulwala Cricket Club (YMCC) at Lords on Saturday.

February FEBRUARY 2: Buller stars Jakara Anthony and Scotty James were announced as competitors in the upcoming winter OIympics.

The Delatite first XI consolidated a place in the top four on the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association A grade ladder after a solid win against City Colts Cricket Club at Lords on Saturday.

And Domingo Diaz’s lightning display nabbed him the monthly medal in Men’s golf.

FEBRUARY 9: New Olympic champion Jakara Anthony took women’s moguls into a new league after crushing the competition to end Australia’s 12-year Winter Olympics gold-medal drought.

The date has been set for the first Mansfield Marathon with Sunday, May 29 marked on the calendar for the event, with organisers hoping to attract between 300 and 400 participants to the run.

FEBRUARY 16: The flags were flying again over the weekend as the roar of engines echoed throughout the High Country when Targa racing returned to town.

Sydney’s Jeff Morton scored a dominant victory in the overall stats, and Mansfield’s own David Blunden took a second place podium with co-driver Jaidyn Gluskie in the Early Modern category.

FEBRUARY 23: Eagle-eyed rifle shooter Marty Kelly took out his second Sportsperson of the Year award at last week’s presentation night at the Mansfield Golf Club.

And Delatite tied with Ovens Valley in a thrilling cricket game at Lords, with a

March MARCH 2: Josh Hopwood made his move off the Coombesberg, The Juggernaut in flying form to notch up his first win of the season in the MMBCC. Sarah Fox won her third women’s singles title in a row at the Mansfield Tennis Association.

And Mansfield was well represented at Country Week tennis at Swan Hill.

MARCH 9: Local junior mountain bike stars Elise Empey and Ruby Dobson walked away with national titles in their respective categories at the recently concluded Mountain Bike National Championships.

Mansfield’s B1s bowling side entered the finals after an undefeated run all season.

And thirty-two riders from the Mansfield district headed to Falls Creek Mountain Bike Interschools on Friday, February 25 for the fourth annual event.

MARCH 16: Delatite A Grade made finals cricket, securing fourth spot on the ladder after a win over Whorouly.

Mansfield’s Rio Olympics gold medallist Catherine Skinner launched her 2022 international competition campaign travelling to the Shotgun World Cup in Nicosia, Cyprus as part of the six person Australian team.

And Linda Brook took out the ladies Golf League Player of the Year.

MARCH 23: Mansfield Shire’s own Will Purcell rode hard at last week’s Merrijig Rodeo, walking away with the hometown win in front of 6000 spectators.

Merton CC, returning to the crease for the first time in four number of years, went oh so close in their semi-final, drawing Yarrawonga in their last game.

And Buller trained champion Jakara Anthony finished the season with a double podium weekend, securing her first overall World Cup Crystal Globe as the world number one ranked mogul skier.

MARCH 30: Delatite A Grade bowed out in their semi-final against Wang Magpies.

Mansfield’s B1s bowling side lost to St James in their pennant final.

And the Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling

Club hosted the 2022 Mansfield Hotel Tour where 230 entrants, plus family and friends, travelled to Mansfield from all over Victoria and interstate for the race, which ran like clockwork all weekend.

April APRIL 6: the 135th Tolmie Sorts day returned to great fanfare after a brief COVID-enforced hiatus.

Mt Buller’s bike trails were getting top marks over the summer, with a resounding thumbs up from riders for the recent improvements.

And Bonnie Doon’s bombers sides returned to the footy field and netball courts for their first games of the season.

APRIL 13: Mansfield Eagles seniors footy side got off to a great start for the beginning of the 2022 season with a good win over Euroa.

In the tennis teams grand finals, Sweet Spot, Leprechauns and Pro Bonos took out the premierships for their respective weeknights.

And Equestrian Australia eventers rolled into Mansfield for the second Annual Friends of Mansfield EA Horse Trials, with organisers were thrilled by the turn out.

APRIL 20: Mansfield Eagles netballers returned to the court, while the Eagles footballers took out a nail biting win over Seymour.

Bonnie Doon seniors had a tough game and narrow loss against Good Friday arch rivals the Benalla All Blacks.

And Mansfield’S Under 14 Basketball Girls made history at the recent Junior Country Championships held at Traralgon, where they became the first Mansfield team to win a state tournament.

APRIL 27: The Australian women’s shotgun team, including Mansfield local Catherine Skinner, won the gold medal at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy.

The Bombers travelled to Tarrawingee, upsetting the Bulldogs at ‘The Kennel’.

And The Eagles battled Benalla Saints on ANZAC day weekend, clean sweeping their rivals in footy.

May MAY 4: The Essendon Bombers visited Mansfield Secondary College

STANDOUT: James Law had a great season for Bonnie Doon’s senior footy side, with the team falling just short of the gold in their maiden O&K grand final.

Mansfield Pennant golfers advanced to their respective finals.

And the Eagles travelled to Victoria Park in Echuca on the weekend and went down by 10 goals to the home side.

Mountain bike rider Ruby Dobson was confirmed as one of the 88 athletes who have been categorised as Emerging and Developing athletes by AusCycling.

MAY 11: Mansfield Athletics Club had their first race ever on Saturday in the State Cross Country Relays at Jells Park Melbourne.

Merton Cricket Club had its awards night, with first year player Luke Benton winning the Bob Catherwood club champion award just ahead of Ross Mackinnon.

And golfer Brad Grant hit a purple patch, winning all three weekly competitions, admist a fine ongoing pennant season.

JUNE 8: The Eagles travelled to Mooroopna at the weekend to take on the Cats which saw the Eagles come away with a solid 29 point victory and secure top spot on the ladder.

Long serving president of the Mansfield District Basketball Association Bess Gillard stepped down from the role, making way for a new person to come along to take the helm of the growing club.

And Bonnie Doon footballers went down swinging against top of the ladder Benalla All Blacks, while the Bomberettes bested their arch rivals on the netball court.

MAY 18: Mansfield’s current dual Australian speedway champion Max Fricke stormed to his second Grand Prix win before more than 50,000 spectators at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on the weekend.

Mansfield lady golfers are over the moon to once again have been victorious in this year’s NE District Pennant finals; two teams were successful for 2022.

And Mansfield Shire primary schools convened at the rail trail last Friday for the annual District Cross Country.

MAY 25: Dual historic victories broke a 50 year drought for men’s pennant golfers, with both the handicap and scratch sides winning their respective North East pennant championships.

Mansfield Olympian and Australia’s highest ranked female street skateboarder, Kayley Wilson, was selected on the Australian National Skateboarding Team.

And Mansfield Soccer Club has kicked off again this season on after a successful ‘Come and Try’ day in April.

June JUNE 1: Sunday May 29 was the inaugural Mansfield Marathon events run by the newly formed Mansfield Athletics Club.

There were over 200 entries across the four events which included a

JUNE 22: Mansfield CTC held the annual Highland Shield teams event, Mansfield v Euroa v Alexandra.

Mansfield’s Bill Forrest, Marty McLachlan, Phillip Desmond, David Luelf and Ken Skinner took out the shield.

Primary and secondary students from the shire’s schools competed at the Regional Cross Country, which was held at the Benalla Showgrounds.

And darts competition came to the Mansfield Golf Club.

JUNE 29: Seymour snatched a one point win from the Eagles at the weekend, while the U10 juniors played a curtain raiser at Bonnie Doon.

Bonnie Doon Bombers blasted the Whorouly Lions into limbo with a dominant victory.

And Mansfield hosted Euroa in tennis, with a welcome return to dry weather conditions.

July JULY 6: Bonnie Doon blasted their way to a clean sweep of victories at the weekend, dismantling the North Wangaratta Hawks.

Mansfield bowlers took to the indoor lawn to get their fix over the frosty winter months.

And the annual Adams Ski and Golf Day was held last Friday and was, as usual, a great success, raising $32,500 for school snowsports.

JULY 13: Mansfield Pony Club’s Molly Lines and her horse Tadpole won at the prestigious Melbourne International Three Day Event.

Mansfield’s own Catherine Skinner won the World Championships Selection series and made the senior women’s trap squad for the World Championships later this year.

And the second annual ‘Shred for Chumpy’ day was held, with close friends, family, colleagues and fans showing their respect for the snowboarding champion.

JULY 20: The Eagles roasted the roarless Rochester Tigers.

A local derby between the red and black teams ignited winter tennis.

And Mansfield’s U12 representative junior football side hosted Benalla at home on Sunday in the annual interleague match.

JULY 27: The Eagles took on the Bears this past weekend, with the seniors’ side securing a solid home ground victory.

TheVictorian All Schools Cross Country Championships were held at Bundoora on Saturday, with a strong turn out from Mansfield.

And Bonnie Doon’s senior footy side administered an absolute drubbing to the Tarrawingee Bulldogs at the weekend.

August AUGUST 3: Mansfield speedway motorcycle racer Max Fricke and his Australian teammates lifted the 2022 World Cup at the Speedway of Nations World Championships at Vojens in Denmark on Saturday night.

Bonnie Doon’s footballers and netballers had a clean sweep of victories over the Greta Blues.

And an apex Eagles senior footy side bested the Benalla Saints, with power

forward Cam Arnold bagging six goals in the victory.

AUGUST 10: Netballer Leonie Berry was celebrated in her 450th game for the Mansfield Eagles, starring in her B Reserves side’s solid season.

Mansfield Junior Netball Club held their finals/presentation night.

Mt Buller Race Club (MBRC) hosted the second of its King Of The Mountain series of races with a Giant Slalom on the famous little Buller Spur Race trail, with fastest female Summer Wray completing the course in 49.78 sec and fastest male Max Kelly over the line in 46.27 sec.

AUGUST 17: Mansfield skateboarding Olympian Hayley Wilson competed in her first international competition since the Tokyo Olympics, striking gold at the Vans Showdown at Huntington Beach.

The Ovens and King Football and Netball League presentation night saw Bonnie Doon with their largest number of invitees in the clubs history, and a number of winners, including Erin Brond (B&F), and rising stars Mia Tanner and Joel Sanford.

AUGUST 24: The Eagles delivered in front of a home crowd at the weekend, beating the Kyabram Bombers in a rough and tumble contest.

In netball, A Grader Dempsey Parsons celebrated her 150th game for the Eagles.

The Mansfield Junior Football Club held their grand finals in the late winter sunshine.

And it was a bittersweet weekend for Bonnie Doon FNC, with both their seniors and reserves sides playing elimination finals, the former getting the win and the latter copping a loss.

August 31: Mansfield’s B Reserve netballers rolled into the finals after a solid season.

Mansfield/Mt Buller Primary took out the co-ed crown in the Victorian Interschools Primary Schools division.

And Bonnie Doon’s semi-final footy match was called off, after a Greta player sustained a life-threatening injury.

September SEPTEMBER 7: Olympian Matt Graham dominated the Chamois course and the competition on Mt Buller to take home his 7th ABOM

WILD AND AWESOME: Mansfield Shire’s own Will Purcell rode hard at the Merrijig Rodeo, walking away with the hometown win in front of 6000 spectators.

The Eagles U17s side achieved Grand Final glory, defeating Myrtleford in a memorable premiership win.

And a team of six swimmers headed to Melbourne to compete in the Junior Excellence (JX) Summer Starter event at MSAC.

OCTOBER 12: Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club held its first club race of the season on Thursday evening, and Men’s golf sprung back into action.

Mansfield Little Athletics returned for 2022, and The national Ultimate Frisbee Mixed Ultimate Championships came to the North East, taking place at Shepparton on October 7.

SEPTEMBER 14: Bonnie Doon took down Bright in a nailbiter preliminary final to become O&K senior grand finalists, while four of the club’s netball sides also made their respective Grand Finals.

MTA held its AGM and semi-finals , and the Eagles junior footy club held it’s presentation night.

And the Mansfield Eagles seniors clawed their way back to a 15-point victory over the Mooroopna Cats in the GVL semi-final at the weekend.

OCTOBER 19: Lawn bowlers were disappointed after their first pennant match for the season was washed out.

While golf was also largely rained out, the Mansfield Clay Target Club monthly shoot was held in perfect spring conditions, fine and sunny with a slight breeze.

And Mansfield Athletics competed in its first ever athletics meet on Saturday at Doncaster.

SEPTEMBER 21: The Eagles seniors’ football side bowed out of the GVL finals following a loss to the Euroa Magpies in the preliminary final last Sunday.

Winter tennis held its grand finals, with Terip Terip crowned champions.

In their maiden grand final for the O&K flag, Bonnie Doon fell just short, losing to Benalla All Blacks by 35 points, while the club’s B reserve and U15 sides won their respective netball grand finals.

SEPTEMBER 28: Mansfield’s B Reserve netball side lost a nail biter grand final against Seymour.

Mansfield fielded it’s biggest team ever at the Tan Relays, the last race of the 2022 Athletics Victoria winter series.

And Mansfield local Nikki ‘Snickers’ Theodossi won the Best and Fairest in the Division 3 women’s team at Wangaratta Dragons Hockey Club.

October OCTOBER 5: At Saturday’s annual bowls match against Moira Benalla, Mansfield retained the perpetual trophy.

Mansfield cycling stars Ruby Dobson, Elise Empey and Talia Appleton all wore the green and gold for Australia across different disciplines.

And Mt Buller’s snow season wrapped up on Sunday with hundreds of skiers and snowboarders out enjoying the start of daylight savings and spring vibes on the slopes for the closing weekend.

OCTOBER 26: Vintage car enthusiasts visited Mansfield last week as part of the RACV and Vintage Drivers Club’s (VDC) recreation of the 1921 Alpine Trial.

Following a successful foray into competitive darts, Mansfield Golf Club hosted their ultimate night, with professional dart players attending.

And Mansfield Bowls had its annual tournament, with Ray Close, Steve Marks, Syd Revell, Glenda Revell and Ross Parsons taking home the wins.

November NOVEMBER 2: Mansfield’s Cup Day Picnic Races, one of the biggest and most anticipated events on the High Country sporting calendar, was cancelled due to unseasonably wet weather.

Delatite Cricketers were waiting out the rain for their season to begin.

And the Mansfield Football Netball Club held their Presentation Night, with Brett Mahoney taking out the senior’s footy B&F, and Nelle Cousins netball’s A grade B&F. NOVEMBER 9: After several weeks of miserable wet weather, the Delatite Cricket Club team headed to Yarrawonga for the opening one-day game, which they lost in a lop-sided result.

The rain eased for night time and junior tennis to kick off.

And the Eagles signed gun midfielder Lachie Dale, who’ll don the blue and gold alongside his brother Frazer next season.

NOVEMBER 16: The rain gods smiled on Delatite CC as it fortuitously escaped with a draw against last season’s grand

finalists Wangaratta Magpies.

Shelly Comerford and Kyle Bridgeman won the KJ Evans Memorial in golf.

And Merton CC won their B Grade debut following a promotion in their second season back at the crease.

NOVEMBER 23: Sheryl Sargent won ladies golf’s Medal of Medals, while in the mens golf, Taki Murakami nailed a hole-in-one.

Tennis competition was heating up despite unseasonably cold nights.

And Delatite CC’s A grade side chalked up their first win of the season.

November 30: Mansfield’s U12 girls basketballers won their Southern Peninsula Tournament.

Apart from a few tetchy traffic marshals at the polling booth, it was a perfect night for MMBCC cycling on the out and back 25 km course on the Mt Buller Road.

Brad Grant and Gayle Wells took out golf’s monthly medals, while Delatite CC’s A Grade side lost to City Colts.

December DECEMBER 7: TARGA gets the green light from council to return to Mansfield in 2023, but won’t include a street stage due to safety concerns.

Delatite CC continued their rough trot with another loss in the first half of the cricket season.

And Mt Buller’s Olympic Gold Medallist Jakara Anthony wins gold in the World Cup opener in Ruka, Finland.

DECEMBER 14: Max Fricke has successfully defended his 2019 and 2020 Australian Speedway Titles at Adelaide, making it three in a row.

U12 cricketers make their debut for the year, while Delatite’s senior woes continued in a loss to Beechworth as cricket returned to Lords oval.

And young basketball star Ella Mercieca earns a Sportsperson of the Year nomination for her stellar basketball season.

DECEMBER 21: There was no Christmas joy for Delatite CC, as their A Grade cricket side slumped to bottom spot on WDCA ladder following another loss.

Three of Mansfield’s fastest racers – Paul Konig, Dave Blunden, and Brett Ramsay - recently returned from Challenge Bathurst with personal bests.

And Mt Buller skier Jakara Anthony has continued her perfect start to the World Cup season, winning her third straight event in France.

A devastatingly wet spring caused the cancellation of several picnic meetings in October and November, including Mansfield’s traditional Melbourne Cup Day, and some picnic tracks are still out of action due to damage incurred.

The fall Th f ll outt has h meantt disappointment for racing patrons, loss of revenue to clubs and a lack of opportunities for the picnic racing industries trainers, jockeys and owners.

MDRC President, Mrs Leanne Backwell, is happy to report that Mansfield’s track, renowned as one of the best surfaces on the picnic circuit, has recovered well and will be in great condition for

racing i on January J 88.

“The Mansfield committee is thrilled to be welcoming the racing industry, members, sponsors and patrons from near and far to the 168th running of our Cup,” said Mrs Backwell.

“We anticipate high numbers of entries on the six-race card and the day will provide much of the High Country hospitality and entertainment that

Racing Victoria’s Off the Track Program for the welfare and rehoming of retired thoroughbreds will be the MDRC’s designated charity for the January Cup meeting.

Proceeds from the race day charity draw will be donated to Off the Track for the many programs they offer trainers and riders to ensure retired thoroughbreds receive good

care and the opportunity d th t it ffor a life after racing in many equine disciplines.

The Mansfield region is a fine example of many successful horse and rider combinations forged through Off the Track.

Local riders including Sophie Fox and Molly Lines have experienced significant wins in eventing and other disciplines.
