Counterfeit currency hits Mansfield Shire LAST week police reported that there have been a number of counterfeit notes circulating, most commonly $50 and $100 notes, and offered some advice for businesses and individuals who suspected they might be in possession of forged currency. The message was just that - a message - until it impacted some local businesses and made

the matter very real for everyone in the Mansfield region. One impacted business owner, John Perks from Mt Buller’s Arlberg Hotel, ended up on the receiving end of a couple of forged $100 notes, and only discovered it when he went
into a local branch to bank some cash. “I got a shock when their note counter picked them up and rejected them,” said Mr Perks, who’d heard of the news of the counterfeiting from Benalla, and also from Melbourne in recent times. “They were very good (quality). “You couldn’t pick it to look at it, but the police did say they could feel a difference in the paper.

subjected to a black light. “The serial numbers on the legitimate notes lit up, going almost fluorescent, but the fakes didn’t light up at all,” said Mr Perks. “They also had a little wear mark, which the real ones didn’t. “I really just wanted to let everyone know that there are some of these notes around and to keep an eye out, because they were so good that even the bank said

“One thing I noticed was with the real notes, you can’t tear them and when you crinkle them, they straighten back out. “The fakes didn’t do that, you could put a little tear in them and they wouldn’t bounce back to shape as much. “It wasn’t easy to do, not like with normal paper; it was a good likeness.” Mr Perks said the real test came when the notes were
