$9.8 million for Mansfield roads Federal Government delivers big g bonus for more than 20km of road upgrades pg in the shire IN a surprise announcement over the weekend, the current Federal Government announced it will fund almost $10 million to upgrade several roads around Mansfield.

Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie pronounced that $9,865,256 had been allocated to significantly upgrade Highton Lane, two sections of Rifle Butts Road, Chapel Hill Road and Archies Lane.

“This funding is part of the Liberal and Nationals Government’s focus on

delivering better roads in regional areas by investing more than ever before as part of its record $120 billion 10 year infrastructure investment program,” said Senator McKenzie.

“On completion, the route will link the outlying towns and farm businesses with an upgraded, all weather access road and touring route between Mansfield, the Mansfield-Woods Point

Road, and Mt Buller Road.

“This will provide a massive boost to the Mansfield region’s agricultural and tourism sectors while also providing a big win for local contractors when work begins on the upgrades expected later this year.

“Only through the Liberal and National Government’s strong economic management can we continue to deliver important local infrastructure projects for Indi communities - our government recognises the

costs to upgrade rural and regional roads.”

With funding cocontribution from the Mansfield Shire Council, the total project investment is actually worth more than $12.3 million.

“It’s fantastic news,” said Mayor James Tehan.

“They are definitely some of the roads in need of the most attention so we are ecstatic that we got it.

“I believe we are one of only two shires in Victoria that received this grant, so it’s really well done by the department.

“This particular grant had to cover at least 20km of linking road, so that run from Highton Lane through to Merrijig via Chapel Hill Road was perfect and exactly where we needed it.”

Fresh off her visit to the shire, Nationals candidate for Indi Liz Fisher was also on hand to welcome the road funding.

“Having recently travelled through Mansfield Shire, I know that the benefits of this project will deliver great outcomes not only for local residents and

businesses but for the many tourists who visit the area, so it is a win-win outcome for all,” Ms Fisher said.

“This funding will keep locals moving from A to B, getting them to their destination sooner and safer.

“The project will also create new jobs and support our economic recovery not only in Mansfield but throughout Indi and Victoria more broadly.

“I know there is still more work to be done and if elected, I will advocate for continued investment for Indi roads.”

A NEW hospital for Mansfield was again the topic at hand when member for Eildon Cindy McLeish visited town last week, bringing with her Victorian Shadow Minister for Health Georgie Crozier to show her the real need.

“I have been wanting to get her here for some time, but it has been difficult with COVID,” said Ms McLeish.

“The hospital is the biggest project that needs to be happen-

ing in the shire - everything depends on the hospital, and it is a great employer.

“It is under pressure, even before this latest population explosion.

“It’s old and outdated and needs updating - they already have the land across the road and I am going to keep pushing for it.

“It can involve federal money with the age care thing as well, but it just needs to get done.”

Liberal candidate for Indi Ross Lyman was also in attendance

and Ms McLeish said he can advocate sternly for this project also.

“We stress that we need a new facility, and not a refurbishment,” has been the continued call from Mansfield hospital chief executive officer Cameron Butler.

“We need the master plan to be funded and we want it quickly.

“Our buildings are very old and this has been highlighted during the pandemic.”

Mansfield hospital’s master plan was submitted over two

years ago, yet there has been no movement on funding from the State Government since then.

The hospital also took $50,000 worth of damage during last year’s earthquake.

“The community just needs to continue to raise the importance with MPs,” said Ms McLeish.

“Keep it front and centre and in the newspaper, like you have been doing.

“The more attention, the more it keeps in mind for all levels of government.”

Qantas flies in for ski lovers

MOUNT Buller will gain a boost in South Australian visitors this winter with Qantas launching a new seasonal route between Adelaide and Albury.

From July 8 to September 25, the national carrier will operate two weekly return flights between Adelaide and Albury with its 50-seat Q300 aircraft.

The new service will be the only direct connection between South Australia and Albury, saving travellers more than three hours on a return flight compared to alternative flight options via Sydney or Melbourne.

For South Australians, the new route is made to open

up a gateway to the snowfields of Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Hotham for the ski season.

The new route will mean that Albury has direct connections to four capital cities with Qantas for the first time - Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.

QantasLink chief executive officer John Gissing said demand for services to and from Albury-Wodonga had surpassed the airline’s expectations, and the new route would further boost options for travellers.

“A new capital city route is fantastic news for Albury which is quickly becoming one of our most connected region-

al centres,” said Mr Gissing.

“The direct flights to Adelaide and increased Brisbane services will create stronger connections for business travellers and also make it easier for interstate visitors to experience all that the Albury-Wodonga region has to offer.

“This seasonal service will open up a new gateway to some of Victoria’s premier snow resorts, Mt Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek, making them more accessible than ever for South Australians looking for a ski holiday.”

Liberals’ Ross Lyman, who was unable to attend the draw due to a health forum engagement in Wodonga - where the Victorian Government announced $300m for a new Albury Wodonga Hospital - said he too was hearing key themes across the North East.

He said more investment in road, rail, renewable energy, health, education and communications; supporting manufacturing businesses and the agriculture sector to create more employment; and strengthen the trade and tourism sectors to grow the local economy were all part of his “practical, local plan for a stronger future” for Indi.

Labor’s Nadia David, surrounded by supporters at the draw, echoed similar sentiments, and said throughout her door knocking on the hustings over recent months people were “genuinely excited to see someone (herself) who could potentially be in government”.

“Indi has a very good local member who works hard but gets nothing,” she said, believing support for Labor was building and doubling its primary

vote (12.09 per cent in 2019) in Indi was certainly achievable.

Greens candidate Benjamin Gilbert said his campaign would focus on climate change, affordable housing, childcare and increasing taxes on large corporations.

He said he was seeing good support for the Greens and “we literally don’t have enough corflutes for all the people that want them”.

Liberal Democrats’ candidate Dr Julian Fidge said his party’s stance around personal freedoms, specifically no vaccine mandate, was one of the many sensible policies that was resonating with many in the electorate.

“Unlike the Liberal-Nationals Coalition, we don’t believe market forces should run everything, and we’re not socialist like Labor,” he said.

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate Beth Stevens believes most of her party’s policies will benefit Indi, but said local residents are particularly concerned with the state of the regional health system.

United Australia Party candidate Stephen Williams said his first foray into federal politics had been prompted by “the madness of the last two years, and the loss of freedom and rights”.

The father of six, who has run a successful lawn mowing business in Tawonga since 2011, said he was “running to get elected” and believed his party and its policies were the “best choice for regional Australia”.

Nationals’ candidate Liz Fisher said people, businesses and councils she was meeting with across the electorate she has lived in for two decades, said better roads and infrastructure, mobile reception and communications, with health services, were key concerns.

“I know it’s difficult to get an appointment with your GP, sometimes three weeks wait... attracting and retaining GPs, increasing bulk billing services, and keeping telehealth permanent and universal are critical to strengthen health care in Indi,” she said.

INDI electorate voters have 10 candidates vying for their support in this federal election.

Australian Electoral Commission Indi returning officer, Jenny Essex, confirmed the 10 candidates and conducted the official ballot draw, attended by six of the contenders and around 70 interested onlookers, at St Patrick’s Hall in Wangaratta at noon on Friday.

Animal Justice Party candidate Angel Aleksov of Princess Hills is at the top of the ballot card, followed by Independent incumbent Helen Haines, Lachlan O’Connell (Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party), Stephen Williams (United Australia Party), Beth Stevens (One Nation), Benjamin Gilbert (Greens), Liz Fisher (Nationals), Nadia David (Labor), Julian Fidge (Liberal Democrats) and Ross Lyman (Liberals).

Not since 2013, when 11 candidates contested the seat - which Independent Cathy McGowan won from Liberal incumbent Sophie Mirabella - has the electorate been offered such a diverse range of choice.

Ms Essex said 67 voting stations will be opened across the Indi electorate on polling day, but those wanting to vote before Saturday, May 21 will have access to pre-polling centres in Mansfield, Wangaratta, Wodonga, Benalla and Bright from Monday, May 9.

Speaking at the draw, Dr Haines said the past two weeks of campaigning had only sought to solidify the issues that she said have been front and centre over the past three years of her term.

“People really care a lot about honesty and decency, and they’re also raising their concerns about the rising costs of living, housing stress, aged care, health care and climate change, and a workforce shortage,” she said.

THERE is a vantage point at Hank and Carrie Thierry’s Mansfield property that overlooks the valley below.

Running down the steep inclines of their block, the view takes in the lovingly enclosed spring that provides the pure mountain-fed water that forms the base of the Swiftcrest Distillery’s gin, vodka and moonshine.

From this perspective you also take in the surrounding escarpment, with the commanding presence of the granite range through which the water filters, to bubble up on the Thierrys’ Godwills Road property - serving both as a source of inspiration and a reckoning.

At different times of the year, just before their northern hemisphere migration, swifts dart about your head enjoying the conditions on this exposed crest.

Perhaps they are aware that the land has become a sanctuary for local wildlife, and that the couple’s endeavours in distilling are done to such an exacting and environmentally aware standard that the business’s carbon footprint is virtually non-existent.

All ingredients used are either organic or biodynamic, with the Thierrys prioritising locally grown produce when available, and native botanicals are favoured as aromatics.

And the distillery is completely off-grid with the stills heated by a wood-fired steam boiler which the Thierrys spend the day stoking and tending.

“Our goal is to be the most environmentally friendly distillery in the world,” said Hank.

“The timber is all on the small size, which would normally rot on the ground,” Hank said.

Distilling is a slow process as a result, with the couple taking it in turns to man the boiler, gradually bringing it up to pressure, feeding in only a few logs at a time.

It’s quite a tactile, intuitive task manning the boiler which has over 63 valves, and both Hank and Carrie are well-versed in the subtle differences each valve makes to the process.

Plans for the distillery have

been over a decade in the making, with the Thierrys adamant that they remain true to their original vision.

The idea to open a distillery came from a business trip to Hobart just over 12 years ago.

Preceding the work meeting Hank had time to kill, so he embarked on a tour of the Lark Distillery.

Hank not only walked away from the tasting with a thorough appreciation of Lark’s premium quality product, but with the inklings of an idea, tipsy with the possibility of opening up his own Mansfield venture.

something of a revelation, with the Thierrys realising they could generate an income in Mansfield doing something they were passionate about.

And so they followed the dream with a single-minded conviction, committing all available resources to the project.

What followed were numerous distillery tours, under the guise of research, culminating in a couple of craft distilling courses, one in the United States and the other in Tasmania.

The Thierrys bought every book available on distilling, took part in every forum, and watched every you-tube video, and began to source all the boutique ingredients - nurturing relationships with boutique producers - so that when they were ready, everything was in place.

“We had a clear goal in sight and committed five years to what we deemed the ‘dash for cash’,” said Hank, of financing the venture.

“And starting from scratch, the first bottle of vodka cost us $150 to make.

“We were intent on making the product absolutely perfect, and once we got it right we could then start refining the process to make it more affordable and efficient.

“We’re striving to make the best vodka and gin, and we’re working towards making the best whiskey.

“We want our tiny, environmentally-friendly distillery, tucked away down a country lane, on the outskirts of Mansfield, to be regarded globally as one of the very best.” ...You can read the full story in the new Autumn/Winter edition of North East Living magazine, which is out now.

Peggy Aeschlimann has a story to tell

New range starting to arrive....

The life and times of Anne Fraser Bon AUTHOR Peggy Aeschlimann has a story to tell but getting it out there has seen a hiccup - of course all due to COVID. Last week Peggy told her story to two groups of listeners at the Mansfield Library.

Peggy’s research into the life of Bonnie Doon early settler Anne Fraser Bon is intriguing, unique and formidable.

Anne Bon had strong relationships with local Aboriginal people in the area, many of who she employed as station hands on her property, Wappan Station - now the original homestead and much of the land lies under Lake Eildon.

Peggy has worked closely with Serena Bon Wells, Anne’s great-great-granddaughter to create a historically accurate biographical fiction of Anne’s life: ‘Thistle to Wattle: The Anne Fraser Bon Story’.

Through talking to groups such as the Friends of the Library and the Bonnie Doon History Group, Peggy is slowly gaining support to have her works published.

Talking with Peggy before her afternoon presentation last week she explained that her book is ‘ready to go’ - but getting publishers interested enough to actually publish and print has been difficult.

“COVID has seen many books put on the sidelines, and some publishers have actually nearly gone bust because of this pandemic,” Peggy said.

“I have had some publishers interested in printing my book but because of financial strains have not committed to it.

“I am asking anyone who comes to my talks to sign

a pledge that this work is worth publishing.

“I am hoping to gain enough strength to have it published soon; I have one publisher who may take it on.”

When asked if Peggy would consider self-publishing she said to do that she would need marketing experience, time and a lot of effort to travel to bookstores around the state and ‘push her own barrow’ so to speak - all too hard at present.

In the meantime Peggy will continue to travel to areas where she may gain more interest in her’s and Anne Bon’s story in her efforts to become a published author.

Mansfield, we need to talk AN update on my VCAT challenge to the shire’s decision to allow the flattening of endangered Red Gum/Yellow Box woodland at 49-53 Highton Lane, Mansfield.

I attended the compulsory VCAT conference a week ago on line.

No resolution was reached, so the matter goes to a full hearing on June 20-23.

There is always the opportunity for negotiation outside the VCAT process.

You, the reader, can be part of this out of session negotiation.

Do this by talking to your councillors, and to others in the community about these issues.

As it stands all native trees occurring on lots of 4000 square metres or less are deemed lost (that means ultimately killed) because no one has to get a permit to kill them under the present planning scheme.

We can change that, and get Mansfield Shire Council to give our wonderful trees the protection they need to survive and thrive for many more hundreds of years.

With a view to that, Mansfield, we need to talk.

On Sunday, May 1 at 4pm at the Uniting Church Hall in Mansfield all of us (yes, please come along) will have a chance to talk about how great is our town and how we get what we want to keep it a great place to live.

The changes we see now are taking us in a direction many don’t want to go.

On May 3 Council is opening discussion on open space, with an online forum the week after.

So use this public meeting on Sunday to hear what others have to say and be ready to feedback to Council the next week.

This forum gives you the opportunity to tune your questions and actions on open space, community, live-ability and how development is affecting you and you amenity.

Council urgently needs your guidance and some different ways it can tackle the problems that come with development and our dependency on that development.

Councillors, citizens, developers, you are all invited.

Locking up for city Greens THE recent announcement that the Victorian Labor party has placed 24,000 hectares of forest within Strathbogie State Forest into an Immediate Protection Area, (IPA) is government speak for ‘We have an election to win, we better lock up some more forests to appease our mates, the local and inner-city Greens’.

Sadly, in my opinion the placing of this forest into an IPA will have the reverse effect on not only the forest and the animals that live there but also the softwood plantations and farmlands that abut the area.

When forest lockups occur, locked gates, overgrown and unpassable access tracks and massive forest fuel build up occurs due to an ideological management style that is inconsistent with reality recent wildfires in other parts of our state prove this point.

Residents should be aware that Strathbogie State Forest does not exist in a vacuum from within our state’s great need for timber, firewood and pulp.

industry with timber shortages and highly inflated prices for timber effecting the entire nation, not to mention the grey areas of where our timber imports are coming from, what we do locally effects forests all over the world, if we choose to destroy our own highly regulated sustainable timber industry, the flow on effect supports illegal logging overseas, again several legitimate reports support this statement.

It is noteworthy that from a total area of 24,000 hectares, from the year 2000 only very small areas were harvested, most using single tree selection harvesting, (375 hectares) and 45 hectares using the seed tree retention method of harvesting in Strathbogie State Forest, a total of 429 hectares, with no harvesting occurring in 2019 and 2022 due to Labor’s lockup.

This harvesting produced an estimated 21,450 tonnes of high-quality sawlog, and 42,900 tonnes of firewood and pulp providing vital forest produce for Victoria.

Based on those sums for the last 20 years the average yearly area of 21.45 hectares has been sustainably harvested per year out of a total area 24,000 hectares, with the coupe

By 2030, if Vic Labor win the next state election, all native forest harvesting will cease on public land in Victoria, thousands of jobs will be lost, and we will be relying on hardwood sawn timber resources from interstate and overseas - sadly Labor’s promised plantations are a fallacy and designed to create a diversion only.

It would be wonderful to see our local politicians and media demand a thorough investigation of Labor’s forest lockups before it is too late.

Rather, the question is “What policies would you support?”

AS part of their community support efforts Mansfield High Country Quilters presented Holly Cameron from Southern Cross Kids Camp - High Country with 16 beautiful quilts.

The quilters members created the beautiful children’s quilts

during COVID lockdowns.

“We are very pleased to know that we will give warmth, comfort and brighten the lives of disadvantaged children at the camp,” group member Nina Walsh said.

COUNCIL recently announced the purchase of land at 34-38 High Street, formerly the Caltex service station or Gaffney’s Garage.

This site will be developed into a carpark with approximately 100 spaces.

Car parking has been a priority of this council so we are thrilled to have purchased this site in the central business district to help alleviate the congestion and help locals and tourists access our businesses and services in town.

Council this month allocated $50,000 for the streetscape design and planning for the Bonnie Doon township.

The structure plan will guide future growth and make sure Bonnie Doon develops in a wellconstructed and orderly way.

The community will have several opportunities to contribute to this structure plan and help shape the future growth of the town. $45,000 has been allocated to the next stage of the Mansfield Emergency Services Precinct.

This stage will progress the design and business planning resulting in a feasibility study for the

Animal Justice Party policies are based on our core values of kindness, equality, rationality and non-violence.

We will improve the lives and the future of animals, people and the planet. Our platforms are not based on outdated principles, or economic theories that no longer apply. I support urgent, national action to stop the increasing threat to native fauna and the wider environment and to stimulate local rural businesses and communities.

The global climate emergency needs urgent action to protect all living creatures and ecologies. We support clean, renewable energy and sustainable development, transport and primary production. Government, businesses and communities must work together for a viable future for our people and environment.

Our rural community has been hard hit by the pandemic restrictions, especially businesses which rely on tourism, hospitality and retail. I will support urgent funding for economic stimulation for Indi, with local consultation and accountability for successful results.

Like most Australians, I oppose the unregulated cruelty of live export, and will support domestic processing of export meat products.

I’m running again to represent our community as your Independent MP because I strongly believe we need real representation on the issues that matter to us, not someone who just makes up the numbers for party bosses.

As your representative, I am governed by values of integrity, transparency, respect, positivity and always acting in the best interests of Indi. I work for Indi 100% of the time.

Stamping out corruption, better health care across the North East and growing our local economy are important issues.

In Parliament, I have fought to keep the major parties accountable through a federal integrity commission.

My plan to improve health care includes training more doctors locally, waiving university debt for mental health workers who move to the region, properly funding new hospitals, and implementing the recommendations of the aged care royal commission.

Affordable housing is key to getting more workers for our businesses and helping locals stay.

The destruction of our freedom and rights over the past two years of virus madness and the massive debt that the Federal Government racked up at the same time. I want future generations to enjoy a free way of life like all Australians did prior to the madness. The debt will slowly destroy our economy if not paid back.

Issues affecting to Indi are health, education and cost of living. We need our hospitals and other health services well funded and supported to provide care at all levels across the electorate. In regard to education the UAP will increase education funding by $20 billion in the first three years and abolish HECS fees.The increasing cost of living will be addressed by a regional tax concession of 20% for those living further than 200km from a capital city, increasing the age pension by $180 a fortnight and encouraging businesses to relocate to rural areas.

I joined politics because I feel we the people have lost our voice. I feel that a lot of major politicians have forgotten the people of Australia.

My values and principles are first and foremost honesty and transparency. I was raised with the values of truth and honesty and believe they are one of the most important parts of politics that should be stood by every day.

Three key issues that keep coming up in conversation that I have with people in Indi are Health, Education and Farming. One Nation has individual policies on all these three subjects.

Health - we recognise the need to bolster the number of regional doctors, nurses and other critical health professionals and will do so by introducing three year contracts for newly qualified medical professionals and in return pay their HECS-HELP loans in full.

I feel all of One Nation’s policies have been created to suit the communities of Indi and Australia.

We are at a critical point in history. I will be unable to look my children in the eye and answer to them if I don’t do all that I can to ensure they have a liveable planet, a diverse environment and a fair society to live in. As Indi’s federal MP, I would be guided by the Greens’ principles of ecological sustainability, social justice, grass roots democracy and nonviolence.

Through my lived experience with Totally Renewal Yackandandah and Indigo Power in developing up-scalable renewable energy at a community level, I have the knowledge and experience to facilitate similar projects across Indi.

To drive investment and employment in Indi, I can use my knowledge and skills as a business owner, employer and manufacturer, to attract and support the development of local, sustainable businesses and innovation.

As part of the Greens’ team in parliament I would ensure Indi’s inclusion in the implementation of our plan to build, nationwide, a million affordable, accessible, high quality homes, and ensure renters have real rights.

I have seen how The Nationals team across the country can get things done for regional Australia, and it motivated me to make sure that Indi has that same voice at the heart of government.

As part of that team my passion for community, rural and regional areas will get things done for Indi. I am known for being honest, genuine, respectful and consultative.

Aged Care: Ensuring our record funding for aged care supports keeping couples together and allows as many as possible to age in their own home.

Housing: It’s great that people are moving to our region, so we will build more homes in regional Australia by providing 10,000 low-deposit guarantees each financial year for those moving to, or within, regional areas.

Connectivity: We invested heavily in regional telecommunications, after Labor did nothing, but there is more to do. Continuing to upgrade mobile towers and fix black spots is vital to give us the ability to work from home in the future.

My decision to stand cemented during the Black Summer bushfires. To have a Prime Minister on holiday when our country was literally on fire enraged me. We need representatives in government with not only the will but the power and ability to make things happen and I know I can do that as a member of a Labor Government. Simply put, I want to solve problems and improve our chances of a prosperous, healthy future.

Housing, health, future vision. Labor has strong policies on building 30,000 new affordable homes, but better than that we have the track record of establishing strong relationships with all levels of government and this is the only way we’ll solve this housing crisis.

I will get better rural health care throughout Indi, not just in the cities. Labor’s plan to protect and fix Medicare is clear. And I have a clear vision for Indi based on Labor values of fair pay for a day’s work, compassion and equality for all and a government that sees us as a society, not an economy.

Elections provide an opportunity to lobby government.

Eight years ago, I proposed we should have rehabilitation services in regional Victoria. Both major parties adopted the policy, and we now have rehabilitation services in Wangaratta, Corio and Traralgon. I brought $52.1 million to rural Victoria, without being elected. In contrast, while elected, Ms Haines has brought only $6.8 million. My guiding principles are personal freedoms, lower taxes and less government.

Unlike Helen Haines, we have policies.

Kevington Hotel owners discuss past and future plans

By CARMEL DIXON THE historic Kevington Hotel has been purchased recently by local Jamieson restaurateurs, Wili and Daryl Cashmore.

The Poole family have had the freehold of the Kevington Hotel since 1957.

Elsie and Clarrie ran the hotel until 1984, then their family ran the business.

Elsie and Clarrie Poole previously ran the 10 Mile Hotel from 1932 until they were burnt out by the 1938 fires that roared through the district.

They lost everything.

Then World War 2 commenced and most of the young men in the district enlisted for service.

The family left and resided in Melbourne, the sons enlisted and saw active service though WW2.

The Poole family decided to wait until the ‘50s to return to the area and buy the Kevington Hotel.

The evenings at the Kevy were filled with fun and entertainment, with local residents playing the piano, singing and dancing.

Lyn-Maree and Wayne Poole were the last Poole family publicans.

They kept the mystique and service and entertainment as a priority until recently with the imposition of COVID restrictions.

Many clients would remember Ross Wilson and his band, the Jamieson Jazz weekends with many artists performing on the

hotel’s riverside stage.

The 10 Mile to the Kevy regatta was a fabulous annual event and the monthly Upper Goulburn Kevington Cocktail events were enjoyed.

The Pooles’ son Edward and daughter in law Nicole worked at the hotel.

They now have three children: William (5), Arlo (3) and Bailey (9 months).

It was a difficult decision, as the family decided to offer

The joy when Daryl and Wili, and their two children Christian and Caela, purchased the Kevy with the knowledge their family had also been involved with the historic hotel, made for celebration.

Daryl’s grandfather Bill Wheeler was iconic in the early days last century in Jamieson.

Bill owned a 1920s Chrysler and would drive the

local girls to the Kevington Hotel to dances.

Bill also owned the premises where Daryl and Wili run their Jamieson Thai Restaurant today.

Bill was instrumental in purchasing the premises he named the Lakeside Hotel/ Motel, now the Jamieson Brewery and Grill.

The Jamieson families the Wheelers, the Foots and the Pooles go back to the 1800s, with many younger mem-

bers of these families now residing in Jamieson.

Wili and Daryl are staying in Jamieson and will run their Thai restaurant from Friday, Saturday and Sunday with their children.

Local artists present live music at the restaurant to a very content clientele.

Daryl, Christian and Caela are keen surfers and kite surfers, often driving to the coast for that extra wave.

The family also enjoy skiing and snowboarding and they are looking forward to seeing the snow season on the mountain this year.

The plans for the Kevington are still being created and moulded, with some amazing and creative events on the horizon.

The Kevington Hotel plans are for a spring opening, with some tantalising surprises.

The time for renewal and creativity is bubbling to the surface, with Daryl’s passion for 1960s caravans he is adding to his collection.

The drive for this creative family is breathtaking, with their talent and fortitude, they will present their latest acquisition with aplomb.

We wish them well.

Local Easter traffic concerns ALMOST 8000 offences were detected in the first five days of Victoria Police’s Operation Compass road safety effort.

The state-wide road policing operation commenced on Thursday, April 13 and continued across the Easter long weekend, historically a high-risk period on Victorian roads.

Despite significant amounts of holiday traffic causing delays across the state’s roads, more than a third of infringements issued were for speeding offences.

Mansfield Highway Patrol officer in charge Sergeant Marty McLachlan said he could not give actual numbers of infringement notices or defect notices for the Mansfield area mainly due to the fact that both Mansfield HWP and State HWP covered the area.

“The increase in PNs was

definitely there but proportionate to the volume of cars on the road,” Sgt McLachlan said.

“The main police objective was visible presence, deterrence and encouraging responsible motoring, particularly drink and drug driving.

Sgt McLachlan said there was a spike in detections of unregistered vehicles and unlicensed drivers, the focus on drink and drug driving also resulted in a couple of offences in both categories.

“The main areas of concern were in the state parks with a number of collisions attended for both four-wheel drives and motorcycles riding on dirt road tracks,” he said.

“Drivers and riders in these environments tend to take risks, pushing their vehicles and driving skills beyond their capabilities.

“Access for recovery of vehicles and treatment of injured occupants places

extreme time demands on emergency services and the time required to access these incidents has potential to exacerbate patients’ injuries.”

Sgt McLachlan said although the area was overwhelmed by tourist traffic he wouldn’t say it was anything much different to pre 2019.

“The traffic jam (Monday afternoon on Maroondah Highway) was much like previous years, a bit more drastic than 2018 and 2019 where the traffic came to a standstill at Maindample, whereas this year it was closed to the Paps,” he said.

“The situation was not much different on all road networks leading to Melbourne from the likes of Gippsland or the Hume corridor.

“The obvious cause is that everyone departs the area at the same time overwhelming the capacity of the road network; drivers need to realise that leaving it a bit later

or earlier would make for a quicker and more enjoyable trip.”

The two most notable incidents were close to Mansfield, but just outside the Highway Patrol’s area of operation.

They included a run-offroad motorcycle fatality on Two Hills Road at Glenburn and the second collision, also a motorcyclist, sustained very serious injuries on Sandy Creek Track, Lima East, which required an ambulance air-lift to Melbourne.

State-wide, alarmingly,

one in every 326 motorists was caught drink driving, with police conducting 101,917 preliminary breath tests over the operation’s first five days.

Police detected 579 unauthorised drivers for being disqualified and unlicensed, and a further 837 for driving unregistered vehicles.

The total 7783 offences detected during the first five days of Operation Compass included:  2948 speeding offences;  837 unregistered vehicles;  579 disqualified/sus-

pended and unlicensed drivers;  378 disobey signs/signals;  313 drink driving offences from 101,917 preliminary breath tests;  261 mobile phone offences;  243 drug driving offences from 6615 roadside drug tests;  193 vehicle impoundments; and  130 seatbelt offences.

Operation Compass continued until Monday, April 25 at the conclusion of the Anzac Day long weekend.

Vascular health given clinic to be based in region FUNDING secured late last year is set to vastly improve access to vascular examinations for vulnerable, remote and rural communities in the North East.

The Central Hume-east Initiative in Vascular Examinations (CHIVE) will investigate strategies to provide residents from Mansfield, Alpine, Wangaratta and Benalla shires vital access to early detection screening for diseased arteries and veins.

A subset of the highly successful Hume-east Initiative in Vascular Examinations (HIVE) clinical trial, which has been running at Gateway Health Wangaratta campus since 2020, CHIVE will look to engage with local businesses, and health and municipal services, to improve social, health and economic outcomes for their local communities.

At present, up to 50 per cent of Australian residents who experience diabetes and foot wounds (sometimes referred to as ulcers) are believed to have diseased arteries, which can cause significant interior damage before patients ever get to an emergency ward.

HELP AT HAND: A new clinical trial is looking to help bolster better vascular health for communities across the North East.

According to Regional Wounds Victoria, Humeeast region nurse consultant Monika Samolyk, the CHIVE trial would allow medical staff to speed up the diagnosis of diseased arteries, which can be deadly if left untreated.

“The prognosis for peo-

ple with diabetes, diseased arteries and for wounds requiring amputation is worse than many common cancers... up to 50 per cent of people will not survive five years,” she said.

“People with diseased arteries are up to six times more likely to have a heart

attack or stroke, and those who do not have diabetes also make up a large number of those attending emergency departments.

“Many people lack the telltale signs and symptoms, such as pain to alert them to seek help sooner.”

tin Forbes travels from Bendigo once every three weeks and will also assist locals in identifying diseased veins.

“Another group who present to emergency departments with life-threatening conditions are people with diseased veins, undiagnosed deep vein thrombosis (DVT),

DVT without a known cause, or with chronic swelling and skin infections,” Ms Samolyk said.

“Varicose veins are strongly linked to a family history of the disease, however, this risk also increases by 15 per cent in single pregnancies and up to 60 per cent in multiple pregnancies.

“As men age they experience more severe vein disease than women.

“People with such circulation problems and wounds often have other chronic conditions, and they frequently experience social isolation, mental illness, inactivity and disability.

“We can improve community well-being and save lives with prevention, early diagnosis and treatment.”

Ms Samolyk said the HIVE clinic trial is not restricted to those who have developed wounds and other conditions, instead also acts as a preventative measure to ensure risk management is discussed with patients.

Local farmers help create carbon neutral beef range MANSFIELD Shire’s Delatite Station is one of 10 lowemission beef producers supplying Coles with the nation’s first supermarket own brand carbon-neutral beef.

Coles launched Coles Finest Certified Carbon Neutral Beef on Wednesday, April 20, with the industry-leading range including seven premium-quality cuts of beef, from eye fillet to porterhouse steak.

The beef range is certified carbon neutral from paddock to shelf to the Australian Government’s Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard.

And though the range is currently only available in Victorian stores, the next 12 months will see the initiative rolled-out nationally.

The product has been two years in the making with Coles working with beef farmers across Victoria and New South Wales to help calculate and reduce their emissions, resulting in emissions that are 19 per cent below the Australian national average.

Coles chief executive officer Steven Cain said the launch of Coles Finest carbon neutral beef was a great example of Coles working with suppliers to achieve better sustainability outcomes.

“When we announced our sustainability strategy just over a year ago, we said we’d work with all our stakeholders to achieve our Together to Zero emissions ambitions and to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket,” he said.

“Coles Finest Certified Carbon Neutral Beef is a testament to the hard work of our beef producers and their commitment to sustainable practices, and we’re thrilled that they’re taking this important step with us.”

“As part of our ongoing sustainability journey, Coles is exploring further opportunities to partner with our suppliers on sustainability initiatives,” Mr Cain said.

Delatite Station cattle farmers Mark and Fenella Ritchie have been supplying Coles for 10 years, and are now among the beef producers working with Coles to deliver certified carbon neutral beef.

“We are really pleased to be part of the carbon neutral beef project,” said Mark.

“We are always looking to produce the finest quality beef with a strong commitment to environmental and animal welfare values that are backed up with an evidence-based approach to our decision making.”

As part of the carbon neutral beef program, Coles works with farmers to identify ways to reduce emissions from their operations, such as using renewable energy, changing herd management practices for more efficient reproduction and to maximise growth, and use of genetic selection to improve herd health.

Over the past two years,

the supermarket has also been working with Dr Stephen Wiedemann, principal research scientist at Integrity Ag and Environment, to study innovative ways tree planting and vegetation can help reduce net carbon emissions on beef farms through carbon sequestration.

Carbon stored in trees is then included in the farm’s ‘carbon account’ and reduces the overall emissions associated with the farm’s production - a process known as carbon ‘insetting’, in which the process of reducing emissions is carried out at or directly related to their source.

Coles is the first to pilot insetting as part of the Federal Government’s Climate Active program, a partnership between government and Australian businesses to drive voluntary climate action.

“The Coles carbon neutral beef initiative, and the information we have gained along the way about how we can reduce carbon emissions on farms through better herd performance and tree planting, will be invaluable to farmers everywhere,” Dr Wiedemann said.

Coles is also purchasing Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) from the Ar-

North East rehab centre opens PEOPLE with substance addiction problems will be able to get easier access to rehabilitation services in the North East after a 30-bed alcohol and drug residential rehabilitation facility was officially opened by Premier Daniel Andrews in Wangaratta last week.

The alcohol and drug rehab centre on Greta Road includes 24-hour care and support for people who have been through withdrawal or stabilisation and need to continue their treatment.

The facility, costing about $15 million, aims to keep local people living closer to their support networks, with other like-facilities as far away as Corio (Geelong) and Traralgon.

With a mix of single and double bedrooms with shared bathrooms, the facility also includes consulting, staff and support areas, several shared spaces including a kitchen, dining, lounge and activity areas, and an extensive outdoor deck and landscaped areas for outdoor program activities.

It will take in people from across the region and the state, giving them access to tailored care helping them get their lives back on track as they recover from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

Premier Andrews said the facility was a result of local organisations telling the government several years ago that there was a drug problem and a rehabilitation centre was needed.

“A few years ago we had many people come to us and say look we’ve got an ice problem, we’ve got significant challenges here - alcohol and other drugs - and

we need the facilities here rather than people having to go away (to another part of the state),” Mr Andrews said.

“The centre is fantastic for Wangaratta as the gateway to the North East and it will provide home-style beds with the very best of care with wrap-around services including the very best in primary health care.

“There will be GP services all the way through to very specific drug and alcohol treatment.

“The facility is great for families because it means that loved ones who need

that care and support don’t have to leave the community their family and carers live in, and they are critically important to.

“This in every way is not a cost to the budget, it’s a profound investment with better health outcomes, dignity, inclusion and making sure that regional Victoria absolutely gets what it deserves.”

It will be operated by Gateway Health and Odyssey House Victoria who have been behind the project from the beginning.

manager Maryanne Donnellan said the regional demand for the facility is high due to a previous lack of similar facilities in the area.

“We would like to see more beds so people can stay in their communities and people who want to be away from their communities such as metropolitan people might like to come to our region to do their recovery,” she said Ms Donnellan explained that people who have substance issues often neglect their health and the programs will offer physical

and psychological therapy for residents.

“This takes place through exercise, mindfulness, and group and individual programs, alongside living skills, and work on building relationships,” Ms Donnellan said.

Gateway Health deputy chair Felicity Williams said one of the reasons why they wanted to build the facility in Wangaratta was to try to keep people with their families and their supports.

“We know that this is a protective factor and is absolutely crucial in being able to overcome what is a steep mountain to climb,” Ms Williams said.

“When people leave the facility education and employment is a great outcome and we know that this is huge on keeping people on the right side of things.

“The unemployment rate is low and there are jobs available and people just need to be in the right space and frame of mind.

“We’ve talked to employers and people who have got through addiction and over the last seven years that I’ve been involved with this and I’ve talked to employers who have taken on people who have overcome addiction and they’ve actually said they are the best workers they’ve ever had.”

Inquest into AFL death A CORONIAL investigation into the death of former AFL rookie, Jordan Barham, is looking into the Strathbogie Shire Council’s decision to defer works which would have removed potentially dangerous trees on the road where he passed away.

Mr Barham passed away in January 2022 following a car accident on Mullers Road in Nagambie.

A proposal to remove 22 trees from the road due to safety concerns had been delayed by council a month prior to Mr Barham’s death.

In a council meeting on December 14, 2021, members of the public expressed a desire to maintain the environmental value of the area and to protect its landscape and cultural identity.

Four objections were raised during the meeting, with the proposal ultimately being deferred so that council could liaise with the community prior to making a final decision on the road works.

Alleged drug dealer charged A WANGARATTA man has been charged with trafficking and possessing drugs of dependence after a search of his home last week.

According to Detective Sergeant Chris Hill of Wangaratta Crime Investigation Unit (CIU), a search warrant of the 28-year-old’s Smith Crescent address had located a large quantity of cannabis, a quantity of methylamphetamine, and a quantity of cash.

He was subsequently interviewed and charged with possessing and trafficking cannabis, and possessing and trafficking methylamphetamine.

He was bailed to appear before Wangaratta

HEAVY METAL ART: The six metre wedge-tailed eagle will be showcased by artists Steve Tobin and Tank in Longwood.

Heavy metal art LOCAL North East artists Steve Tobin and Tank will be hosting an open day in Longwood to showcase their recent sculptures to the public on the weekend.

The artists were responsible for the popular blue wren located near the Seven Creeks in Euroa recently, along with many other birds and structures created out of metal.

Their most recent sculpture is a six-metre wedge-tailed eagle that caught the eye of many visitors.

The artists both discussed their intent to showcase their art to the wider

community, in addition to encouraging council to see the importance of art to the area.

“We want to get as many people as possible to see the work we’ve been doing and to check out the workshop,” Mr Tobin said.

“Long-term we are intersshowcasing art within the community and to get other artists involved too.

“We will be inviting the council to the event too so they can see how much art can mean to the community.”

Community engagement is an important part of the work being done by Mr Tobin and Tank and they are planning on creating a documentary to raise more awareness about art within the region.

BEAUTIFUL GLASS: Art glass from Eamon Vereker’s collection was again a feature of the annual Easter Art Show.

Annual art show attracts interstate visitors ART lovers from across at least two states took advantage of viewing the Easter Art Show exhibition over the past nine days.

Visitors flooded through the door of the Masonic Lodge building where Richard White and Terry Earle once again put on an exhibition from 40 artists which delighted the hundreds of visitors.

Mr White said he spoke to visitors who had come from as far away as Warrnambool, Sydney, across NSW, Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton and Euroa.

“This year the exhibition has been fantastic, wonderful people visiting and the numbers through the door has been terrific,” Mr White said.

“It has been great staying open for longer this year as it coincided with school holidays.”

Local artist Jennifer Gibney was featured in one section of the exhibition with her latest works which she recently described as ‘embroidery over oil’.

“I recently combined my love of needlework and painting to develop a mixed medium style of work I call ‘Over Embroidery Oil Painting’, when I paint a subject on linen and when dry I apply fine embroidery over the surface,” she said.

The art show remained open for nine days this year which gave visitors a longer time to get to the show.

Mr White said he has already booked the venue for next year’s art show (opening on Friday, April 7, 2023) and will again feature some spectacular artworks by local and interstate artists.

NEW DESIGNS: Featured artworks by local artist Jennifer Gibney included five of her latest designs which incorporate paintings on linen then overstitched in fine cotton creating an almost mystic image and which she calls ‘Over Embroidery Oil Painting’.

ANYONE FOR CRICKET: William (Bill) Linford’s characature images of the cricketers (Baggy Green XI and Farmers XI at the G) created a new vision for art among the traditional works - both very much admired.

LITTLE FIGURES: Also featured at the art show were several sculptures by Lynne Bechervaise, these two titled ‘Safe with Friends’.

Visitor numbers explode for market day AN estimated 10,000 visitors flocked to the Easter Bush Market and other attractions over the long weekend.

The bush market saw the most visitors attending for almost 10 years according to some stallholders and organisers.

Some of the food stalls and local producers sold out before the end of the market which was a great result for them.

A round up in pictures below tells the story in brief.

EARLY BARGAIN HUNTERS: The early bird shoppers got the best of the bargains at the Easter Bush Market - an estimated 10,000 visitors attended the market.

SUNSHINE AND TEAS: Devonshire teas in the gardens of St John’s Church was somewhat a crowded affair for most of the morning.

A TASTE OF WINE: Local wineries were popular with those who liked their wines tastings were popular and sales were good.

DANCE THE DAY: Local dance artist Liam Wilson (known as ‘Bugsy’) put on an impressive display of dancing and was joined by Anne-Marie Fricke who also put on a good performance for the crowds.

LONG LINES: Many of the stallholders at the bush market had to queue for their choice of foods - this local ice cream van was popular and was kept extremely busy throughout the morning.

HOT AND CROWDED: At the peak of the morning it was jostling for space at the Easter Bush Market - attendance being the best in many years.

ACCOMPANIMENT: While book lovers browsed the offerings at the St John’s book sale, local student and musician Hilary Murakami played piano softly in the background much to the delight of many visitors.

QUILTERS DELIGHT: On display at St John’s Church were more than 50 quilts made by local sewers, including many that were being donated to the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre.

READERS’ HUNT: Also at St John’s Church was the annual Easter book sale with hundreds of pre-loved books up for grabs.

The church ladies also sold morning teas.

DIGITAL check-in and screening technology that enables instant text notifications to those on location is now in place at Mansfield Autism’s farm, thanks to a recent donation from USAbased company Safe Site CheckIn. Safe Site is being used by the many contractors involved in the farm construction activity as part of Mansfield Autism’s expansion - dubbed Operation Gamechanger.

Active construction sites include ‘Project Retreat’ with its 12 family cabins being constructed, residence cabins for clients, roadworks and other civils.

Young Farmer Business Bootcamps coming to Mansfield AGRICULTURE Victoria is offering young farmers and those new to farming the opportunity to take part in one of a series of Young Farmer Business Bootcamps, to be held in Myrtleford, Mansfield and Tallangatta this autumn.

These popular, free two-day business bootcamps will help farmers identify and manage business risk and develop a business plan to grow their business and confidence in a future in agriculture.

Agriculture Victoria recovery manager Kylie Macreadie said these fun and interactive business bootcamps use a series of farm case studies as real-life examples, providing participants with the skills to help them manage their farm business now, as well as planning for their business into the future.

“The business bootcamps are also an opportunity for young and emerging farm managers to connect with like-minded and motivated people,” Ms Macreadie said.

Over the two full days business bootcamp participants will develop cash flow budgeting skills, a strong understanding of risk management and planning, plus have the opportunity to fine-tune their business goals.

Presenter Paul Blackshaw, Meridian Agriculture farm business advisor based at Rutherglen, will share his vast experience and knowledge in farm financial analysis, benchmarking, farm business performance and succession planning.

Paul previously worked for Agriculture Victoria as a farm business economist, and was a financial counsellor with the Rural Finance Counselling Service.

The bootcamps will be held at: • Myrtleford - Friday, April 29 and May 6; • Mansfield - Friday, May 13 and May 20; and • Tallangatta - Friday, May 27 and June 3.

Locals leading the way through timber transition THE State Government is supporting a further nine towns across Victoria to transition away from native timber harvesting, with targeted funding to develop new economic strategies and job opportunities.

Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas was in Murrindindi on Wednesday last week to announce the latest recipients of the government’s Local Development Strategy grants program.

Through the program Alexandra, Taggerty, Marysville and Buxton will share in $400,000 administered by Murrindindi Shire Council.

“These funds will help us forge the way ahead for those making the transition away from native timber harvesting and to reduce the broader impacts of the transition on our communities,” said Murrindindi Shire Council deputy mayor Damien Gallagher.

Powelltown, Warburton,

Yarra Junction, Benalla and Corryong will share in a further $1.3 million.

“We identified 11 priority communities where native timber harvesting and processing remain important sources of jobs and economic activity and these grants will help them plan for the future,” Harriet Shing (MLC, Eastern Victoria) said.

The Local Development Strategy grants program supports towns to diversify where native timber harvesting is a significant source of jobs and employment.

The program is designed to be community-led and reflect local priorities and ambitions.

Through the grants, communities will be able to undertake long-term diversification planning to support their local economy and adapt to new industries - increasing job opportunities for workers.

An independent project of-

ficer will engage with locals, community groups, businesses and government over a two-year period to identify each town’s strengths, assets, challenges and opportunities for innovation and economic development.

The officers will be appointed through each town’s local council or community group.

The nine towns will join Noojee, Orbost, Yarram and Heyfield which have already commenced work on their Local Development Strategies.

The communities will also have access to the recently announced $22 million Community Transition and Development Fund, which will also support communities in transition to implement new strategies.

The Local Development Strategy grants are a key part of the more than $200 million Victorian Forestry Plan, ensuring communities are well supported through the transition.

The mysteries of the platypus ON Saturday, May 7 the Howqua Valley Landcare Group will be hosting a presentation by Geoff Williams of the Australian Platypus Conservancy (APC), followed by a guided walk to try to spot the elusive platypus.

The platypus has long been an animal of mystery, partly due to its shy nature and nocturnal tendencies making it hard to observe and study.

Its combination of primitive features and adaptations, especially the flat, almost comical bill, led early observers to believe that it was that of a duck sewn onto the body of a mammal.

Platypuses are endemic to east and south-eastern Australia.

They are found in freshwater creeks and rivers from the tropical rainforests of Queensland to the alpine streams of Tasmania.

Rarely seen due to spending their days sleeping in chambers at the end of riverbank burrows, the elusive platypus comes out at dusk to fossick along the riverbed for invertebrates: swimming beetles, tadpoles, insect larvae, worms, snails and shrimp.

“We often have landholders mention they have sighted platypus in waterways on

their properties around the Mansfield region,” said Up2Us Landcare facilitator Kim Magnay.

“People get very excited by these sightings and often ask what they can do to encourage habitat for these mysterious beauties.”

The APC is working hard to unlock some of the key scientific mysteries which surround the platypus.

Geoff Williams was a founding member of the Platypus Conservancy in 1994, an organisation that is dedicated to researching the conservation needs of the platypus.

Join in the Great Aussie Dunny Hunt EFFORTS to map Australia’s public toilets are under way again through the Continence Foundation of Australia’s Great Dunny Hunt.

Locals are being encouraged to join in the hunt by updating details of public toilets in their vicinity on the National Public Toilet Map, to help other users quickly and easily identify which facility suits their needs.

During the 2021 hunt, there

were 3877 registrations of regional public toilets nationwide, resulting in 607 new entries on the map.

While more information about what facilities are offered at public toilets will benefit all communities, it will be especially impactful for the one in four Australians who experience incontinence, as well as the 38 per cent of people living with a disability who experience incontinence.

Australians are encouraged to update the facilities from now until World Continence Week in June.

At the conclusion of the dawn service the attendees repaired to the Courthouse Hotel and enjoyed the traditional gunfire breakfast, hot home cooked stew that over 100 diners devoured with hot toast.

Some containers of the gunfire stew were transported to local homes, where the residents were unable to attend the early event but were not forgotten.

The preparation for the annual Anzac Day services takes a great amount of time and generosity.

The proprietors of Mansfield Alpine Butchery have again donated a large portion of the diced beef that was cooked into a piping hot stew.

A round of applause and thanks resulted when the butcher’s generosity was announced.

The proprietors of the Courthouse were also thanked as they hosted the breakfast diners and made their kitchen available

for the stew to be served.

The Legacy collection at the gunfire breakfast resulted in $500 raised.

THE Jamieson Anzac Day march was also well attended, with many marchers wearing relatives’ medals in remembrance.

Perkins Street was closed for the duration of the march, 50 marchers assembled at Mary Street and marched to Gerrans Reserve, the marchers were led by two WW2 Jeeps. The march leader was local resident Howard Hey who kept the marchers in step and on time.

When the large crowd assembled following the march, wreaths were laid beside the earlier placements.

Following the marchers being dismissed, the crowd attended the midday service where The Venerable Catie Inches-Ogden delivered a eulogy that captivated the audience.

The history of her military service with five generations of military service in her family.

She related some amazing stories about her grandfather who saw service in Egypt and was later sent to Fromelles.

The primary school students were greatly appreciated with their singing.

ANZAC Day services in Jamieson were very well attended as the dawn service in Gerrans Reserve commenced with master of ceremonies Barry Matthews addressing the attendees and welcoming them to the service.

Father George Feliciouz drove from Mansfield to Jamieson to offer two prayers, for those who had fallen and for peace in our world.

The dedication followed and the Anzac requiem.

The placing of small white crosses bearing the names of Jamieson family members who had seen service and have died.

The crosses were laid at the memorial rock with the eternal flame burning behind.

This year many children were encouraged to place a cross in remembrance.

Each cross has a handmade poppy attached, created by the Jamieson craft ladies.

Following the placing of the crosses wreaths were then laid in front of the crosses.

Noel Arandt read the Ode of Remembrance.

That was followed by a three shot volley.

Three local licensed shooters performed the volley with a safety officer on duty.

Former Jamieson Courthouse publican and trumpeter Phil Everitt drove from Bendigo in the early hours to play the Last Post at the dawn service, he also played at the midday service

Girls basketballers bring home gold LAST weekend saw Ballarat host the under 12 Victorian Country Basketball championships.

Mansfield under 12 girls’ team started off day one against some of the top teams in the state.

With a winning mindset the girls brought their best game and gave the state’s best a run for their money, coming close to winning a few times.

After being graded into their divisions the Eagles came into day two ready to show the whole of Victoria what they are made of.

Game one saw them put on a show for the Surf Coast debutantes with a thrashing of 37-6.

It was a delight to see the whole team implement all the teaching from their coach Glenn Thornton.

Game two saw a clash of old rivals, Mansfield against Benalla.

The girls went in confidently knowing what they were in for and played their own game to perfection, again getting the win, scoring 37-12.

Game three was a nail biter, initially with some exhausted girls dropping their heads giving Wonthaggi an unexpected early lead.

A quick time out and a reset, with some encouraging words

from the coaches saw the return of the smiling assassins, reminding Wonthaggi why Mansfield belong on top of the ladder, finishing with a win of nine points.

Day three was always going to be tough, defeating Yarrawonga in the first game for the day which led to the semi final against sharp shooting Wonthaggi.

The Eagles were a bit sluggish to begin with and knew they had to bring their A game. They fought their little hearts out to get the win in the end with tears of joy as the siren went.

Final score 42-28.

The girls were relaxed and ready to fight out the grand final against Yarrawonga.

All the girls played their part and never gave up.

It’s been the most amazing team effort and they should be very proud.

Final score 30-20.

This is the first ever medal for Mansfield in the under 12s and the second medal overall for Mansfield at the states, which is an amazing effort.

Each girl set their own individual goals and objectives.

Each one of them blew it out of the ball park.

SOLID GOLD: Mansfield under 12 girls won the first ever gold medal for the town in their division at the Victorian Country Basketball championships in Ballarat last weekend.

With the unrelenting hustle and pressure of the greeters, Sophie Snell and Macey Thornton; Lily Adams, Zara Yencken and Tara Craddock jumping under their skins for every rebound, converting points on the board; the drive of the aggressive trio, Brydie Thornton, Lara Klingsporn and Tigerlee Brackman, and linking between defence and

attack of all rounder Jade Awty.

Special thanks to coach Glenn Thornton and assistant coach Adam Snell and the amazing team manager Allie Wilson for putting it all together, and to the wonderful supportive club president Bess Gillard for her constant support throughout every single tournament and being there watching and cheering at every game.

Under 14s blast Bulldogs at home

By BRENDAN PIGDON SUNDAY, April 24 saw Mansfield play host to Benalla Bulldogs at Mansfield Recreation Reserve.

With perfect weather conditions, Mansfield didn’t waste any time getting started.

Jaxon McCormack was straight into it in the ruck tapping cleanly to Ethan Pigdon and with quick hands to James Benton cleared the ball out of the centre into the forward line resulting in a goal to Liam Smith.

Mansfield’s small brigade were into everything with magnificent play from Andy Friday, Alex Kipping and Orlando Miller.

The Eagles kicking under pressure resulted in a lot of missed goals in the first half with the score at half time being Eagles 6.14.50 to Bulldogs 1.1.7.

After half time the forwards settled in well kicking a lot straighter resulting in goal after goal.

Harry Yencken, Harry Craddock and Noah Whittall were switched onto the ball having fantastic results.

Mansfield stepped up to top gear in the last quarter with Eddie Morphett kicking two quick goals in succession.

Due to an unfortunate accidental head knock, coaches and umpires agreed to end the game there due to a small wait on an ambulance.

Final Score was Mansfield 90 to Benalla 13.

Mansfield battle Benalla in Anzac weekend clash A Grade

Mansfield 25 def by Benalla 59 Best on: Dempsey Parsons sponsored by Mansfield Foodworks Coaches: Grace Hood  EAGLES A grade were eager to take the court on Saturday against their great rivals Benalla.

The side was missing a few key players with Ellie Kipping unavailable and Latoya Wards injured changing the Eagles’ starting line up.

Grace Hood joined Meg Mahoney in the goal ring, Cass Dolling, Bella Riley and Alicia Foster were in the mid court and Dempsey Parsons joined Nelle Cousins for the first time as a ring defender.

On the interchange bench was Tyla Ciarma and Milli Howland who had both already played a full game for B grade. Although the line-up was different to what the girls had played with before, they were confident that they could challenge Benalla’s well gelled side. The first quarter saw Eagles goal for goal with Benalla apart from one turnover, heading into quarter time only three goals down but still strongly in the game.

The second quarter was unfortunately the breaking point for the Eagles.

The team as a whole struggled to find their goalers in the ring and when they did it was the pressure of the strong Benalla defenders that would get their hands to Eagles feeds or were all over the rebound when Eagles missed. The Eagles headed into the second half now 17 goals behind Benalla and had to work really hard to rein the game back in and close the now much bigger gap on the scoreboard. Both Hood and Mahoney worked tirelessly in the goal ring all game trying to draw Benalla’s hunting defenders away from both Riley and Dolling’s strong feeds into the ring.

The combination of Riley, Dolling and Foster in the mid court was strong at transitioning the ball into the attacking end and also putting defensive pressure on Benalla when the ball was turned over in and around the ring.

by Benalla 48 Best on - Chloe Judge Coaches Award - Tyla Ciarma THE second home game for B grade led to excitement in the air as they were ready to fight for a win.

Britt Kipping and Bianna Kelly worked well in the ring together, shooting some amazing goals, hyping the girls up.

As they moved into the second quarter the defensive pressure stepped up with Matisse Gardiner, Tyla Ciarma and Chloe Judge destroying their opponents.

The girls fought making a comeback through both the third and fourth quarters,

with the help of Millie Howland, TeAna Wards and Kara Dolling moving the ball through the midcourt with agility and ease.

The B-grade girls put up a fantastic performance as they worked on their set goals for round 3, completing them as they worked hard as a team.

Overall they made a great comeback in the second half of the game and with the hard work the girls are putting in the results against Benalla when they verse them again in round 15 will hopefully be different.

At half time we had changed in all three areas on the court with Brooke Kipping coming into goal keeper for her first game this season.

Our intercepts and tips were high.

Our final quarter was strong and our work ethic didn’t drop.

Mansfield 46 def Benalla 15 Best on - Amelia Clydesdale Coaches - Remy Stevenson THE third game of the season saw Mansfield’s under 15s come up against a fairly evenly matched Benalla side at home.

The girls were excited and hungry for their first win of the season.

The first quarter was fast paced, and Mansfield worked hard in both defence and attack, resulting in a solid lead at quarter time.

During the second quarter the girls worked on incorporating new skills they’d been working on at training to extend their lead.

Defenders Harper Anderson (GK) and Jaspa Robinson (GD) worked tirelessly in the ring, along with Emma Witkiss in WD,

hunting for intercepts and creating many great defensive turnovers.

The girls kept the pressure on their opponents in the third quarter to ensure they maintained their lead against Benalla.

Goalers, Amelia Clydesdale and Annie Thompson worked hard throughout the quarter, moving well around the ring and utilising their newly learnt screening techniques.

The rest of the girls pushed themselves to maintain their intensity the whole time, testing their fitness and will to win.

Defence was kept tight, which resulted in Mansfield dominating the game for the majority of the quarter.

The whole team was tired moving into the final quarter, but with a solid lead and the hunger for a win, the girls continued to maintain their strength.

A few position changes saw Tasia Ciarma come onto the court in GK, Ava Mahoney in WA and Remy Stevenson in GA. The team’s defensive pressure didn’t wane, and mid-courters Molly Judge, Ava Mahoney and Eliza Doig worked tirelessly to cover the entire court.

The girls played their hearts out, and were rewarded with a 31 goal win over the Saints.

They are now intent on holding onto this winning attitude throughout the season, and are looking forward to playing Echuca next week.

By SHAUN McMAHON THE Anzac round clash at the weekend saw the Mansfield Eagles win a clean sweep of games at the recreation reserve against traditional rivals the Benalla Saints.

A lively start saw the Eagles seniors race to a 29 point lead at quarter time, bagging five goals in the first term.

The Eagles didn’t take their feet off the pedal in the second term, slotting another three while keeping the Saints scoreless.

A 43 point deficit at half time was always going to be hard for Benalla to come back from, as the Eagles piled on another three goals in the third quarter to Benalla’s single.

A whopping six through the big sticks in the final term blew Benalla’s last ditch efforts out of the water, and the Eagles cruised to a monumental 113 point victory.

“Our mids worked really hard on getting the stoppage structure right; the likes of Patty Marks, Sam Thomson and Jimmy Herridge did really well with that.

“And our back seven did a great job all day, providing plenty of rebound and set up

good offensive drive.

“Will Foster kicked five and Benny Christopher’s work rate was really impressive.

“No one lost their position all day, which was really pleasing.”

Benalla struggled to field a reserves side at the weekend, but the 18s took to the field.

A tight battle early on saw the sides evenly matched at quarter time.

But it was all Mansfield after that, with five goals in each of the second and third terms to Benalla’s meagre three points.

An evenly matched final quarter, at least on the scoreboard, was too little too late for the Saints, and the Eagles marched away to a convincing 62 point victory.

The Eagles travel to Echuca next week in what will be a big test.

In form Freo want Lobb to stay forward FREMANTLE coach Justin Longmuir is keen to keep Rory Lobb in the forward line despite concussion ruling out ruckman Sean Darcy for Saturday’s clash with Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

Darcy will miss the trip to the Cattery after copping an accidental boot to the head in Saturday’s 35-point win over Carlton in Perth.

Lobb helped fill the void while Darcy was off the field, and finished the match with 25 hitouts to go with his three goals, 14 disposals and three contested marks.

It took Lobb’s tally to 10 goals from six games this season.

Although Lobb is yet to kick a big bag of goals this year, his ability to make a contest has proven crucial in helping Fremantle’s small forwards feast at ground level.

Instead of shifting Lobb into the permanent ruck role against Geelong, Longmuir is set to recall Lloyd Meek, who played the first three rounds before going out of the side.

“He (Lobb) is so important

to us as a forward,” Longmuir said.

“Although he probably hasn’t hit the scoreboard the way he would like, we’ve been really impressed with the contest he gives.

“That contest to bring the ball to ground is really important, because it’s allowing us to go to work at ground level, whether it’s winning it or pressuring.

“Without that strong contest in the forward line our small forwards can’t pressure.”

wards were crucial against Carlton, with Lachie Schultz (three goals), Sam Switkowski (two goals), and Michael Walters (two goals) all cashing in.

Walters entered the match with just two goals to his name from five matches this season, and he was mobbed by teammates when he kicked truly from a set shot in the second term.

He followed it up a short time later with a classy dribbled goal, with Fremantle booting six goals for the term to set up the

“I’ve been saying every time I get asked, I firmly believe he’s in good form,” Longmuir said.

“He just hasn’t finished his work and put the icing on the cake.

“I am really proud of our playing group when they got around him after the set shot.

AUSTRALIAN Hannah Green is the closest challenger to third-round leader Nasa Hataoka in the LPGA Tour’s Los Angeles Open after an uncharacteristic late meltdown from world No.1 Jin Young Ko. Starting the day two shots off the pace, Green carded a two-under 69 at Wilshire Country Club to get to sevenunder.

Siddle marks 200th match with 6-51 haul AUSTRALIAN cricket’s veteran workhorse Peter Siddle really does seem to be getting better with age.

Just ask English batters.

The 37-year-old has marked his 200th first-class game a rare feat in itself in an era dominated by one-day fare by producing a familiar performance of skill and guile for his latest county, Somerset.

It’s two-and-a-half years since he played the last of his 67 Tests at the Oval but he was back there on Saturday, still entertaining English crowds with his excellent 6-51 off 26 probing overs to help bowl out Surrey.

Siddle, whose victims included England’s Sam Curran and Ben Foakes, may have to produce something similar on Sunday’s final day, when Surrey are likely to be chasing a target under 250 in their second knock.

But Siddle, who’s now taken 687 first-class wickets in 200 matches at an average of 26.47, is looking more than ever like a master with the red-ball, some 17 years since he made his first-class debut for Victoria.

The man who took 221 Test scalps is still a formidable opponent for any English wannabe opener as he’s

shining for his fourth English county in his sixth season in England.

It’s believed he’s the first Australian quick to reach 200 game milestone since Michael Kasprowicz in 2004.

He’s not, however, the oldest Aussie bowle playing in the English game, with Glamorgan’s Michael Hogan still going strong at nearly 41.

Siddle recently attributed his longevity and improved consistency to taking up a vegan diet over the last decade.

“I look after myself off the field, which undoubtedly helps,” he said.

Scramble goes swimmingly

By LAURIE HARCUS ANZAC Day is the talk of the nation this week, and proudly so, for ourselves and our allies across the ditch.

We have our own allies in Mansfield, or should we say ‘Alliance’.

This week’s Victorian PGA scramble (a celebrated event) was sponsored by Mansfield’s Alliance Insurance Brokers who do so much for many events in Mansfield.

Supporting sponsors is an integral part of the golf club mantra.

Tuesday’s results were not available, but Thursday’s Stableford saw 64 players three weeks in a row, very pleasing for all.

A grade: 1st - Josh Foots 39 pts (14 h/c); 2nd - Peter Kilkenny 38 pts (11 h/c); 3rd Peter Vallance 36 pts (6 h/c).

B grade: 1st - Trevor Wright 36 pts C/B (20 h/c); 2nd - Warren Shepherd 36 pts (36 h/c); 3rd - Ross Vaughan 34 pts (24 h/c).

Young likeable left hander Josh had an excellent result, the best of the day.

Peter’s second was formidable and had him playing to a single digit handicap which only 17 per cent of all players worldwide achieve.

Peter Vallance is a story in himself.

In summary, 36 pts this week to add to his 40 pts last week for this young 78 year old person.

Regularly shooting under his age, he is No. 1 player in the handicap pennant team and has also represented the scratch pennant team.

Admiration from all his co-golfers go to him.

B grade winner, Trevor Wright, another veteran had a good day after being on the sidelines for a couple of weeks.

He edged out Warren and Ross of the morning crew.

Alan has done it again backing up from his championship match play win last week to score 40 pts and play to a single figure handicap.

Mark is going from strength to strength and is so close to the elusive scratch handicap.

Everyone hopes this recent club champion achieves that amazing goal.

For Robyn Pratt another Mr Consistent, from Goughs Bay a fine result.

An excellent day for Shane who just gets better and better, playing to a fitting 13 handicap on the day.

Well done to Aaron for his 39 pts, hopefully we see more of this smiling young man as time permits.

Ian Jones has a reputation

for needing Mayne Nickless to take home his winnings.

A golf bag each and a trip to the North East finals hopefully eventually ending up in QLD for the finals.

Third (I hope I got this right), Ben Millott, Josh Foots (Thursday’s winner), Jarrod Heath and Paul Lange; they go ‘cap in hand’.

A great day for all and well done to the above.

Plus a big thank you to David Joyce (assistant general manager) for his efforts in co-ordinating and organising this event.

Golf shop employee Chris was excellent in his continual cooking on the barbecue for all of the players.

Eagles 17s steamroll Bulldogs

By Chris Stoney A PERFECT late autumn morning greeted the Mansfield under 17 boys at our home ground against the old rivals Benalla Bulldogs on Sunday.

As only our second game for the year there was a fair amount of “I wonder how we are going to go” feeling in the rooms and the coaches prepared the boys accordingly with a lot of work put into our structures and how we play our home ground.

The game started with a lot of pressure on the footy and it took a while for the nerves to settle, except for Benny Reardon playing his first game for the year with his disposal

and decision making.

This helped bring Adam Storer into the game and he started where he left off last week with the first couple of goals for the game.

Not to be outdone though the Bulldogs’ Rory Salmon got on the board and the quarter was a real old fashioned tussle.

If it wasn’t for River Reeve and Dan Bruno on the last line of defence we would have been well behind but at quarter time we led by 15.

The  game felt closer than that and coach Q Thomson pleaded with the boys to lift and midfield coach Flea was working on getting our set ups right at the stoppages.

In the second Hunter Reeve took control of the

midfield and Riley Hall started having an impact.

Jack Marks got busy on a wing and we controlled the game but we didn’t put it on the scoreboard kicking 2.2 for the quarter to one goal.

Unfortunately Adam Storer came off second best as he flew for a mark and he went down with a broken wrist and had to come off the ground and looks like he will miss a number of weeks.

At half time the coaches had to act accordingly and spin the magnets and put AJ from centre half back to full forward.

Head coach Jamie Longstaff asked everyone to steady the ship and grind out the third quarter which the boys did in an impres-

sive display of football only to be let down by an inaccurate 2.7 for the quarter.

Trent Berry was impressive with his run and carry off half back as was Will Friday, who filled a number of roles during the day.

In the last we kicked away and posted 7.5 to the Bulldogs’ single goal, the highlight being a Nick Taylor beauty over the shoulder.

Final scores Mansfield 15.18 to Bulldogs 4.1.

Best: Reece/Sportfirst Ben Reardon, Hunter Reeve, Mansfield Hunting Fishing Jack Marks, and MFC - Trent Berry.

Others: Riley Hall, River Reeve and Will Friday.

Next week we make the trip to Benalla to play the Giants.

Rain dampens foursomes turnout

By SHERYL SARGENT THERE were no players on Tuesday unsurprisingly as the rain started early Monday morning and didn’t stop until Tuesday night.

The garden definitely loved the steady fall and looks totally revived.

The course though was wet underfoot on Wednesday for the Doris Chambers Foursomes event.

There were quite a few ladies still not willing to venture out as the numbers were low.

Winners of the day were

Linda Brook and Gayle Wells with 36pts.

Runners up were Susan Kinloch 33pts and Jenny Koraus; third place went to Lyn Holland and Katie Pilbrow 31pts.

The state final of this event is played in Melbourne at either Sanctuary Lakes or Southern Golf Club which is always exciting for the ladies to play at Melbourne courses.

Nearest the pins went to Kylie Egan on seven and Linda Brook on 16.

Saturday was a normal

Stroke round which attracted 12 players to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather.

Winning the day with a great 69 nett was the inform Jenny Koraus.

Runners up with an also great score of 70 nett was Jackie Smithwick on a count back from third place Lorraine Cullen.

THIS week Bonnie Doon under 17s gained another victory.

The team was excited to get out on the court and put all of our hard work and training to good use, which paid off for all of us in the end with a win 56 - 20.

All of the girls played their hearts out and played a very strong game from the start to finish.

Best on Court Shannon Cameron sponsored by Bowser Bean Coaches Award Steph Evans sponsored by Foodworks THE sun was out and the girls were ready to hit the court and get our first win of the season.

Little did we realise then, that history would be created by becoming the first Bonnie Doon A grade team to beat Tarrawingee since joining the Ovens and King league.

With two of our goalers out this week we had the ever athletic Heidi Summers join the team in the GS position, slotting straight into the team working seamlessly with Mia Tanner in GA. The team settled straight away and the quarter ended with our nose just in front.

Determined to increase the lead in the second quarter the ever calm Shannon Cameron in C provided plenty of patience when feeding while Sarah Fox, as always, worked hard off the line and gave plenty of movement to get the ball down to the on fire goalers.

Ending the quarter up by four.

Heading into the premiership quarter the defensive pressure further increased by hands over the ball from Steph Evans in WD giving Anna Manning in GK and Casey Thompson in GD the opportunity to go flying to get themselves multiple tips and intercepts which was transitioned down court the best it has all year.

on the prize and were determined not to lose possession when we had it.

The defenders’ hard work saw Tarra goalers kept to their lowest scoring quarter of the game.

The girls could not be more excited to come away with the win.

Bring on next week to make it two on the road.

Coming into the last Maddie came back on in wing defence while Jess A donned the goal attack bib.

As they had done all day Cass and Webby stood up in the defensive goal ring, working their butts off and rebounding strongly.

Harry, Alicia and Maddie kept the pressure up through the middle while Liza and Jess A started to find their groove in goals.

In the end Bonnie Doon’s accuracy saw them make the most of their opportunities and run out seven goal winners 35-28.

Next week sees us away again at North Wang.

The game started

with intensity from the first centre pass and the Bombers were able to take an early three goal lead before Tarrawingee settled into their work.

Time and space were a premium with Jess H in centre having to work hard with Maddie to get the ball into the attacking third.

Alicia had her work cut out for her on the wing, while Cass and Webby were rock solid in defence.

Jess A and Liza worked well in the goal ring against some solid Tarrawingee defenders and at the end of the first quarter they held the advantage.

The second quarter contest was fierce from both sides right up and down the court with great defensive pressure causing turnovers for both teams.

The third quarter saw Soupie come on in GA, Alicia moved into WA. Chloe R came on in WD and with fresh legs the Bombers managed to keep up the intensity.

The quarter was a real arm wrestle with both teams’ defence holding up rock solid.

WE stepped on court feeling positive and ready to work together as a team.

Throughout the game Hannah S, Maddie C and Narelle S interchange Cass T worked hard on bringing the ball down and transitioning our intercepts and rebounds into goals.

Leith M, Alison H and Amy C constantly made hard drives creating space and easy flow down court, working the ball onto the ring and feeding into our goalers Michelle T and Chrissy B who held strong and continued to put the goals up.

The whole game we showed how strong and skilled we are as a team.

Adding to the excitement of the day we were blessed to have Narelle Seymour join us on the court after a few years away.

Starting the winning streak were the u15s.

Stella played her usual consistent game moving into new spaces to offer other options around the court.

Demi managed many intercepts and used the ball well flicking it into the shooters.

While Grace and Gemma provided some powerful rebounds, Amy and Torah worked amazingly to bring the ball out of the defence into the attacking end.

Catherine’s medals keep coming THE Australian women’s shotgun team has continued their international success winning the gold medal at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy.

Having won the gold medal at the Cyprus World Cup in March, the trio of Mansfield local Catherine Skinner, Penny Smith and Laetisha Scanlan were top qualifiers for the gold medal match after collectively hitting 200 out of 225 targets.

The Aussies met team Italy in the gold medal match where they displayed great focus and determination as they put on a dominant performance to win the Gold Medal by seven points to Italy’s one.

In their first time competing together, Skinner and her teammate James Willett followed with a bronze medal in the Trap Mixed Teams.

The duo shot a qualifying score of 135 out of a possible 150 targets to land them a place in the bronze medal match against the Czech Republic where they finished seven points to three to win the bronze medal.

Bombers upset Bulldogs BONNIE Doon travelled to Tarrawingee this past weekend to take on the Dogs at ‘The Kennel’.

Tarra were looking to come away with solid wins heading into their bye round next week.

But it was the Doon who soared and left the Dogs scratching.

Tarawingee would have success in the reserves only, the seniors footy side - like the historic clean sweep for the Bombers’ netballers - took away victory, leaving the Dogs to lick their wounds and look forward to their Sunday

In the seniors, errant kicking from Tarrawingee set them back against the Bombers, who’s straighter boots of 17.7 (111) gave them a 20 point victory over the Dog’s 13.13 (91).

Best for the Bombers were Jim Law (Coach’s Cup), Joel Sanford (Doon Pub), and Jack Goonan (Mansfield Pizza).

The ressies were unlucky,

going down to the Dogs’ bite in a narrow nine point loss, with final scores at 9.7 (61) Tarrawingee to 7.10 (52) Bonnie Doon.

Best in the seconds were Joe Kelleher (Coach’s Cup), Geordie McLennan (Doon Pub), and Luke Berriman (Fan pick).

Seniors coach Ken Murray said there were a lot of positives coming out of the weekend.

“The ressies had a ripper game, fantastic, but it just wasn’t to be,” said Murray.

“We had a young group in this week, so from that perspective it was very

positive, and gave them a real good sniff and taste at another level up, so that should do us well.”

Murray said in the seniors, the scoreboard reflected the game pretty accurately.

“That was about the right margin,” he said.

“There were ebbs and flows throughout the day; we had our momentum swings and shifts as did they, but we managed to hold their fire.

“They definitely had some gettable goals they missed and enough looks to make the game tighter.

“But having said that we had more than enough ourselves to do better than we did.

“I think each side will take a bit out of it, and we were both missing a few players, so it was a real depth test for us both.”

Speaking of highlights from the day, Murray reiterated the solid efforts of Jim Law and the solid Joel Sanford.

“Jack Goonan’s game was terrific, full of character and full of fight, James Fox was pretty handy in our ruck, too, as was Connor Heaslip off

half back,” Murray said.

“It was good to have him back and he certainly contributed.

“Jayjay Curtin is also having a hell of a year.

“The impact he had on the game was significant.”

The Bombers travel to North Wang next weekend to take on the Hawks.

“I’m pretty confident in saying there’s going to be no easy games, so ladder position doesn’t mean a lot,” said Murray.

“They’ve won one and we’ve won two, so we’ll just see who turns up on the weekend.”
