She held the position of director, corporate and community services for Mansfield Shire Council prior to carving out a distinguished career which included council CEO roles in Victoria and the Northern Territory, before returning to Mansfield to take up the CEO role.

HELEN Haines has been returned as the Independent member for Indi, receiving a resounding swing of 7.41 per cent of the two candidate preferred vote, as of Monday morning.

Dr Haines’ vote increased to 58.8 per cent of the two candidate preferred vote, from 51.39 per cent in 2019, according to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).

“I’m truly grateful to the people of Indi for putting their trust in me to represent them again into this next parliament,” Dr Haines told the Mansfield Courier on Saturday night.

“It’s been a really tumultuous three years for our electorate, and I’ve been proud to serve as the member for Indi and I’m ready to serve again.

“I’m absolutely overjoyed and thrilled to not only win, but to have such an increased majority on many, many booths.”

lling Liberal Party challenger Ross Lyman, who received 30.91 per cent.

She received swings across almost all polling booths in Indi, including double-figure percentage swings in regional centre booths like Yea, Wodonga Central and Mansfield.

As of Sunday morning, Indi postal votes and votes from the AEC mobile team had not been counted.

Dr Haines put the successful result down to Indi voters valuing strong Independent representation.

“The people of Indi know that an Independent speaks for the people, that I am not a rubber stamp, that I’ll stick up for them every single time, that I don’t take orders from party bosses,” she said.

“I know the people of Indi well because I’m out among them.

“They’ve seen how I work and they’ve seen the results in this community.”

Dr Haines said she would continue to push for a federal integrity commission and action on climate change, and particularly highlighted the need for greater health infrastructure in the North East.

“I want to see us on the border get what we need, get the funding from the Federal Government and our two state governments on a new hospital - a single site hospital on the border,” she said.

“I want to see our small rural hospitals get the funding that they need.

“They’re the things that I’ve always fought for - I always will.”

Dr Haines declined to comment on any agreement with the Labor Party in the event of

a hung parliament, saying it was too early to discuss with votes still being counted.

When her win was called around 9:30 on Saturday night, Dr Haines spoke to a room filled with orange-clad volunteers at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre, thanking them for their work.

“To win a seat as an Independent in the House of Representatives, it takes hope, it takes skill, it takes clever, brave people doing the work in their community,” she said.

“It takes moving out of your comfort zone and having the conversation, it takes knocking on a door when you’ve never knocked on those doors before.”

According to Dr Haines, their campaign had 1845 signedup volunteers, 559 volunteers handed out how-to-vote cards on election day, and they had knocked every door in Wodonga and Wangaratta.

She said her campaign had 1251 donors, and they sold $37,000 worth of merchandise, most of it made by volunteers.

COUNCIL has finalised the lease of 17 Erril Street, Mansfield.

Home to the town’s ‘community sheds’, the lease has been negotiated directly with the Men’s Shed, following a protracted dispute between them and previous leaseholders, MACE. Council announced at their meeting last week that the lease will run for 10 years with a further two x 10 year options upon expiry.

Cr Mark Holcombe endorsed Cr Rabie’s sentiments.

“It’s a great result for the Men’s Shed and I think they’ll go ahead in leaps and bounds,” said Cr Holcombe.

“They’ve got some great things they’re going to do, having cemented their independence and being in charge of their own destiny.

“Council played a big role in getting this result for the Men’s Shed, we are pleased with that and are sure the Men’s Shed are too.”

Merrijig property sells for record amount

By EMMA OLIVER AFTER significant national and even international interest, a lauded Merrijig property with Delatite River access has sold midway through the expressions of interest phase, with the EOI scheduled to close on May 31.

The price guide for the property was $16 million.

Kate McDougall from McGrath Mansfield declined to disclose the actual sold price but confirmed that it was a record for the shire, with the buyers a

young Victorian family looking to make the region home.

“Our vendors were downsizing, and were thrilled to be able to hand over their much-loved property to the perfect custodians,” Kate said.

“The buyers are a farming family coming off land in the Western District who are looking for a mountain change.

“They plan to run some cattle and live here, with their three young children attending local schools.

“They have been considering

moving to the area for a while, and have just been waiting for the right property.”

While other prospective clients had contemplated subdividing the amazing property - which spans four titles and 271 hectares of working farmland and forest - the buyers intend to keep farming it.

“They put in a wonderful offer and the vendors were more than happy to accept and close the EOI,” said Kate.

A surreal vision of Colleen takes the prize

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY JENNIFER Gibney has taken out the 2022 Arts Mansfield Mansfield Shire Three Faces Portrait prize with her ‘embroidery over oil’ portrait of sitter Colleen Reynolds.

In just five weeks, the time given for all six artists to produce their portraits, Ms Gibney painted, embroidered and then stretched the linen artwork over a backing canvas to complete her piece.

It portrays the very essence of Ms Reynolds in a natural setting with a gentle softness about her - depicting the gentle, yet environmental love she has for life.

Before an audience of almost 100 people on Friday night, six portraits of Ms Reynolds were unveiled, the three from youth artists and three from adult artists.

Judges were Mansfield Shire mayor James Tehan and Shelly McSpedden, senior curator of the Shepparton Art Museum.

Cr Tehan spoke on behalf of the shire thanking all who had supported this event and stating that this event ‘just seems to get better and better each year’.

“It was a really hard decision to make on the winners - we nearly came to fisticuffs,” he said.

“Well done to all the artists,” Cr Tehan said.

The three youth artists were privileged to unveil their artworks first giving a brief description of each piece.

Co-ordinator of the Three Faces art competition, Liz Bannister, then announced the winner of the youth section - Elsie Leatham with her characateur digitised portrait of a lively Ms Reynolds. Runners up were both Molly Purcell and Liz Bird.

Ms Leatham took home the prize of $500 while the runners up were awarded a $100 prize each.

Ms McSpedden congratulated all three youth artists on their presentations again reiterating that it was a hard task to choose the winner.

“The reason why we picked this winning piece was we talked about the approach El-

Again Ms Bannister announced the winner as Jennifer Gibney.

Ms McSpedden said this portrait looked beyond the subject and took in her surroundings.

“When you come up and look closely at this portrait you will see the amount of embroidery that has enhanced this painting,” Ms McSpedden said.

Ms Reynolds, apart from being thanked by the artists and the organisers for being a sitter, also in turn thanked the artists saying it had been a pleasure and fun working with all of them. She had really enjoyed the experience.

The line up of masks was very impressive and creative, some funny and lively judging took place.

ON Tuesday, May 3, the grade fives from Mansfield Primary School headed off to the Benalla train station, to board a train to Southern Cross Station (Melbourne).

After the long journey to the station, we hopped on another train to Geelong, had lunch, then took a bus to Riverview Caravan Park in Ocean Grove.

Once we arrived, Group A stayed at the campsite to set up the tents, while Group B went to enjoy the first surfing lesson of the trip (instructed by Go Ride a Wave).

The instructors were really enthusiastic and pushed everyone to have a go.

After the groups swapped, we had a delicious dinner and got ready for the night walk.

Wednesday morning, we got up early to get on a bus to Anglesea.

We split up into three groups and alternated between kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and a play at the beach.

We were taught by the same group of instructors from the surf lesson.

We travelled back to the caravan park and had dinner

Disappointed with Will I HAVE the upmost respect for our medical fraternity and therefore was very disappointed with Will Twycross’ comments in the May 18 Courier article.

My issue is not political and Mr Twycross has a right to his opinion, but suggesting contributors are “politically ignorant” is not what you would expect from a person in his position.

followed by an amazing talent show.

Thursday was a relaxed day that started with a beach walk.

Each group had their last surfing lesson of the trip, the rest of the day was spent hanging around at camp and the day ended with some trivia.

Friday was another early morning and we got up in a rush to pack up our gear.

After the pack up we caught a bus back to Geelong then a train back to Southern Cross.

Each group found their way through the city to find the Queen Victoria Market.

Every student got $5 to spend on new and exciting foods to share with the rest of the group.

After a long day we went back to Southern Cross Station to buy a $10 dinner.

After the long, tiring train back to Benalla station we met back up with our families and went home.

Everyone was tired and slept in the car on the way home.

Overall it was an amazing trip and everyone really enjoyed it.

Thank you to all the teachers and parent helpers for all their efforts and help running camp.

WOW day washes town in orange LAST Wednesday was Wear Orange Wednesday or ‘WOW Day’, a chance for communities across Australia to wear orange and thank all SES volunteers who generously give their time to help us all during flood, storm and other emergencies.

Mansfield SES had a sausage sizzle and a pair of marquees set up in the main street, alongside one of their response vehicles, kitted out with an array of equipment used for emergencies.

SES members also made their way around town and took photos with businesses supporting them, and a number of businesses participated in their own orange way to say thanks.

A huge thank you to Mansfield SES for the work they do in our community.

Way Back Wednesday - a look back at what was making news 20 years ago this week.

JAMIESON’S Andrew Dwyer last week won Liberal Party pre-selection to contest the seat of Benalla at the next state election.

Mr Dwyer, 43, was the first Liberal Party candidate in Benalla for over 14 years, and he had his sights set on the seat currently held by Labor MP Denise Allan.

Liberal candidate already campaigning for 2025

By JEFF ZEUSCHNER LIBERAL candidate Ross Lyman was back out in the community this week, starting his campaign to re-contest the seat of Indi in 2025.

Mr Lyman, who rang Independent incumbent Helen Haines on Saturday evening to congratulate her on her win, said he was disappointed to a see a four per cent primary vote swing against his party in Indi with the two party preferred difference roughly 60/40 favouring the incumbent - although he does expect the 17,000 postal votes yet to be counted to help reduce that divide.

Acknowledging the “bloodbath” at the national level, the former Army commando and now Wahgunyah viticulture manager said his team would analyse what factors - local and national - had impacted on his ballot result.

“I began my campaign this election in January and the feedback we’ve got is that I need to be out there sooner, so I’m starting today for 2025,” he said, noting that working with the private sector and business community to get the economy firing would be a big part of his expected broad platform again.

“Obviously there has been a shift in society...it’s something the Liberal Party has to look at nationally.

“If people want to get to net zero (emissions) quicker than 2050...are happy to see

Mr Lyman said it would be a challenging environment for any government this term at the macro level, and whether Labor governed in its own right or in a minority government, it was likely to look after its own marginal seats, ahead of electorates such as Indi.

“We’ll see what focus Indi gets...Independents can’t deliver, that is what governments do,” he said.

Fellow Coalition candidate, Nationals’ Liz Fisher, said she was “devastated” to see traditional National voters support the incumbent and also One Nation candidate, eroding her party’s primary Indi vote to below four per cent.

“I think there were some big picture issues at play... some Nationals may not like Barnaby Joyce or the pro

mining policies,” she said.

“The Independent ran a very well funded campaign.

“I really see the Nationals as a party for rural and regional development, but clearly that is not resonating with people in towns.”

Ms Fisher said her candidacy since January had been a “very positive experience meeting so many good people”, she was looking forward to refocusing on ‘mum’ and farm duties, and was still keen to play her part of the party in the future, although that may not be as a candidate.

A 3.6 per cent swing against Labor to reduce its primary vote to 8.5 per cent in Indi was personally disappointing for candidate Nadia David, but she was excited by the national result which will see her party back in government after almost a decade.

“After all the months of work by myself and our small team of volunteers it is disappointing, but the Liberals and Nationals also suffered a backlash here,” the Beechworth academic said.

“I can see that a lot of our support went to Helen (Haines), who ran a much larger campaign and is a quality local member and I wish her all the best....I’m happy for her and for Indi.

“Potentially she could play a bigger part (if Labor in minor government)...she is a progressive and we’ve seen a progressive vote in Indi on matters of climate change, as well as an integrity commission which Labor has committed to get in place by Christmas.”

Ms David said she was open to the idea of running again at the next federal election.

feedback but for now I’ll have a break and focus on getting my PHD,” she said.

First time Greens candidate Benjamin Gilbert said he was delighted with the outcome in Indi, and nationally, believing the results pointed to Australians’ desire to see more action on climate change.

“This has been a climate change election,” he said, “and Indi has been part of that progressive vote.

“People understood what Helen stood for.

“You can’t call Indi a conservative seat anymore.

“Helen and Cathy (McGowan) have shown that safe doesn’t exist if you are not on topic.”

The Yackandandah sculptor was delighted to see his party’s primary vote double in his hometown, and said an electorate-wide swing of around one per cent away

from the Greens had been support for the incumbent’s shared vision on climate policies.

“I’ve really enjoyed the whole experience...it’s been very positive and for me it’s about doing what is right for the kids,” he said.

“I’d be happy to run again, unless someone younger than myself wanted to do it.”

Liberal Democrats candidate Julian Fidge said he was reasonably content with his support at the ballot box.

He believed the party’s support was borne from its policies to stop lockdowns and vaccine mandates, and protect personal freedoms.

Candidates Beth Stevens (Pauline Hanson’s One Nation), Angel Aleksov (Animal Justice Party) and Lachlan O’Connell (Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party) could not be contacted for comment at print.

Improvements to our public spaces

CONSTRUCTION works on a natural amphitheatre at the eastern end of High Street are finishing up as part of Mansfield Shire Council’s activation of outdoor spaces project.

The $13,000 amphitheatre is constructed with large mudrock set into a grass mount, creating an events and performance space as well as outdoor casual seating.

The natural amphitheatre is just one of a series of projects designed to increase activity in Mansfield Shire’s outdoor spaces.

Council successfully obtained $300,000 in funding from the Victorian Government to complete the series of projects.

The projects were determined through extensive community consultation and include:  further improvements to the median strip, such as the installation of removable umbrellas,

extra bench seats and an updated music system, allowing community groups to hold events without having to engage a sound technician;  interactive artwork in the mall at the east end of High Street by renowned local artist Tim Bowtell. The art gives the story on the rivers within our shire through unique ‘insta-worthy’ street art;  Taungurung art will be installed in the median strip and on other infrastructure across the shire;  shade structures will be installed over and adjacent to the playground at the Mansfield Botanic Park. In considering community feedback about the Botanic Park, a masterplan will be developed to identify future development for the site;  new signage and town maps

including information on amenities and recreational areas.

Mayor James Tehan said that the amphitheatre and other median strip works will encourage activity into the quieter part of town.

“The upgrades to this space will create great possibilities,” said Cr Tehan.

“Visitors will be able to grab take away from local hospitality businesses and find additional seats, shady areas in summer and engage with points of interest in our township, such as the interactive art or the amphitheatre.

“We’re proud that these projects were formed in consultation with our community.

“You can find information about how each of these projects progresses online, with most of the projects reaching completion over the next couple of months.”

Help shape Mansfield Botanic Park A NEW masterplan will be designed for the Mansfield Botanic Park and Mansfield Shire Council is asking the community to contribute their ideas in a community consultation.

The Mansfield Botanic Park Masterplan will consider the current park and an extension of almost 3.9 hectares of land adjacent to the Redgum Estate which is to be included in the overall development of the space.

Mayor James Tehan said that council had recently asked for ideas for how to improve outdoor spaces and that many of the comments were related to the Botanic Park.

“We received a lot of feedback about the Botanic Park and we know how loved it is by our community,” said Cr Tehan.

“Council heard and read many great ideas specifically relating to the Botanic Park

and these will all be used as a springboard for the development of the masterplan.

“This is an exciting opportunity to come back to us with how you currently use the Botanic Park and how you’d like to see it developed.”

Procuring a consultant to complete and implement the masterplan is funded with $40,000 of the $300,000 total grant funding from the Victorian Government’s Out-

door Economy Package.

Other improvements to the Botanic Park completed over the last 12 months include the installation of the new playground, the Gadhaba garden, new picnic tables and bench seating, and restoration of flood damage to paths and garden areas.

Rain puts pressure on Mansfield drainage again RECENT wet weather has put pressure on Mansfield’s stormwater drainage infrastructure, causing water issues across many of Mansfield’s roads.

Mansfield Shire Council will conduct its annual program to manage the stormwater network this month, which will concentrate on areas of concern identified through community feedback and by council officers.

The program includes water pressure cleaning and investigates and identifies issues, cleaning out problem areas.

Works on large sections of High Street, sections of Highton Lane, Ailsa Street, Lovick Avenue and Links Road have been contracted to The Drain Man. The maintenance is budgeted at $61,635.

Minor parking and access interruptions may occur during the maintenance works, along with some noise at the site.

The contractor will be moving throughout each day which will minimise disruption.

Alpine road safety in snow season ROADSAFE North East is urging motorists to show patience and give space to others when driving on local Alpine roads this snow season, as part of its SnowSafe Driving initiative.

Spokesperson for RoadSafe NE, John Weinert, said it is also important for motorists to prepare their vehicles before heading to the snow, as well as being careful, cautious and considered on the road.

“Driving our Alpine roads brings so many pleasures and surprises, but winter can also throw in some unique challenges and issues as conditions can change rapidly in extreme weather like black ice, blizzards and fog,” he said.

“With travel to ski destinations high on many Victorians’ list, we are expecting to see a large volume of day trippers and first-timers making the journey to the snow this season.

“Driving on snow and icecovered roads can be challenging, even for the most experienced drivers in the best-prepared vehicles.

“Both ice and snow reduce the amount of traction you have, making it harder to get moving, steer and stop.

“Using your head and not your foot when driving on Alpine roads, is key to safe driving.”

Taking extra care starts

ICE & SNOW: Please drive slowly on Alpine roads in the snow season. before hitting the road.

Ensuring vehicles are properly equipped and in good condition is a must, so this means checking tyres, battery, brakes, cooling system, engine and windscreen.

Diesel ‘waxes’ at low temperature can block the fuel system and immobilise the vehicle.

This means that diesel vehicles require fuel formulated for use in cold conditions, such as ‘Alpine Diesel’ mix, which is available at service

stations in Mansfield.

Add anti-freeze to the engine radiator.

The amount of anti-freeze needs to match the capacity of the coolant system.

If the coolant freezes, the engine block and radiator may crack, resulting in an expensive repair bill.

Carrying snow chains is compulsory for all vehicles entering Alpine resorts.

Authorities will advise when to stop and fit the chains, in a designated

chain-fitting area.

RoadSafe NE strongly urges motorists to practise fitting chains before the trip.

Only fit chains to the driving wheels, which are the back wheels on rear wheel drive cars and front wheels on front wheel drive cars.

Carry a torch, plastic garbage bag and gloves to make fitting easier.

Consult the car manual for recommended tyre pressure when fitting chains.

Tyre manufacturers rec-

ommend that cars with radial tyres shouldn’t travel faster than 40km/h when fitted with chains.

Future of Targa High Country in limbo

THE future of Targa High Country is in limbo after the recent cancellation of permits for Targa-style racing rally events by sanctioning body Motor Sport Australia (MSA).

Following a tragic fatality in the Targa Tasmania event last month, which followed three deaths in two separate incidents at the same event last year, MSA advised last week that a Targa Review Panel will be appointed to investigate the latest incident and make further recommendations on the future of Targa-style tarmac rallies.

“During that time, no permits will be issued,” MSA said.

“Once the review panel has had its say, the new Motorsport Australia Risk and Safety Committee, which was established late last year, will assist the board in making any decisions.”

Motorsport Australia chief executive officer Eugene Arocca said the board had made a difficult decision but was left with little choice given the current circumstances.

“At this current time, we are not in a position to establish the cause of this recent incident, and this may take some time,” Mr Arocca said.

“Accordingly, the board has determined that a review panel will be appointed to investigate the cause of the incident and to conduct a wider review of this form of competition.

“Any recommendations will then be considered by the board for implementation on a more permanent basis.”

IN LIMBO: Targa High Country may not go ahead in November after the recent cancellation of permits by sanctioning body, Motor Sport Australia, and a divided reaction to the February event at the council. the tender of a report at the most recent council meeting, in which Gareth MacDonald, economic development officer - tourism and events for Mansfield Shire, outlined economic data obtained from the recent Targa High Country rally.

A postponed Targa High Country ran in February this year and is scheduled to run again in November, which is the final event on the current contract.

“We went about it in a different way (this year) in terms of gathering data,” said Mr MacDonald, who spearheaded the collation of surveys from local businesses alongside the collection of expenditure data from rally participants.

“I’m confident it’s a true representation on what entrants spent.”

Cr Rohan Webb took interest in the economic benefit to shire businesses, which was reportedly 11 times the council investment: $330,000 for council’s $30,000 spend on this year’s event.

Cr Webb asked how that stacks up against events of a similar scale, something Mr MacDonald took on notice to investigate, as he said the shire doesn’t currently have another event of the same magnitude with which to compare.

But the economic benefit to the shire wasn’t the leading factor for all councillors.

“I’m coming from a different perspective,” said Cr

Mark Holcombe, “I put more value on people’s lives.

“One of the concerns in reading the report from Senior Sergeant Steve Carden of Mansfield Police, is when he said, quote ‘What I’m uncomfortable with at this stage from a community safety perspective, is the street stage’.

“And he quoted a pro-Targa long-term Mansfield resident, who said ‘This race is an accident waiting to happen’.

“That’s coming from a police report to council, and we’re looking to sanction a race that has a history of killing people,” continued Cr Holcombe, adding that this comment pertained to potential spectator incidents as well, not just drivers.

“It makes me really uncomfortable as a councillor.

“I don’t care about the economic impact at all; one life lost on our watch to me is a real concern, and that really has to be taken into consideration, regardless of what Motorsport Australia says.”

Cr Rohan Webb responded that he too was concerned with the recent deaths in Tasmania, that we don’t yet know if they’re related to Targa as an organisation or the area in Tasmania specifically, but that the hope is concerns with MSA can be addressed.

Cr Webb also noted the Senior Sergeant’s report concluded that the issues noted - which detailed a number of safety aspects, includ-

ing people walking onto the road, lack of barriers (tape only), and ‘a link between the motor sport crowd and consuming alcohol’ - were not insurmountable, alongside there being no driver or spectator fatalities he was aware of in either the High Country or Gold Coast rallies.

“I’m concerned about excessive red tape in the way of tourism events that come to our region,” said Cr Webb.

“I’m concerned with the loss of life, which is unacceptable, but the drivers are taking a known risk, they’re qualified and licensed to perform the tasks they’re doing.

“I want to balance these points out with promoting the region as a destination for world class events as well.”

Mansfield Shire Council said that other authorities, including Regional Roads Victoria, also need to issue permits to enable the event to go ahead.

Council is waiting to understand the findings of the Motorsport Australia panel and whether or not an RRV permit will be issued for the event.

The majority of businesses were supportive of the continued running of Targa High Country in the Mansfield Shire, citing the economic benefit to their operations, but many expressed concerns around the street closure’s impact on trade and communication surrounding this.

A few businesses noted negative impacts around alcohol consumption, with some staff expressing that they felt uncomfortable, while one business owner said they were greeted with vomit from a nearby camped out team when they arrived to open up.

North East region news in brief Fatal collision at Violet Town

Following the successful implementation of a Koori Court in Wodonga earlier this year, Koori Court officer Joy Kelly said she expected the court’s advent in Wangaratta to play an important role in reducing offending and strengthening accountability among the local ATSI population.

MAJOR Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after a fatal collision in Violet Town.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Freeway southbound to reports of the collision involving two trucks just after 12am last Tuesday.

Sadly, the driver of one of the vehicles, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was flown to hospital with serious injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

Traffic was diverted from the Violet Town exit for several hours while investigators assessed the scene.

Truck fire caused traffic chaos FOR the second time in the last month, a truck driver escaped unscathed, after the cabin of his prime mover caught fire last week, causing major delays along the Hume Freeway.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Freeway near Wangaratta-Whitfield Road at approximately 8am, when a truck was identified in the emergency lane completely engulfed in flames.

TANIA Maxwell, Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party member for Northern Victoria, has asked tourism, sport and major events minister Martin Pakula to consider the inclusion of rowing on Lake Nagambie as a Commonwealth Games 2026 sport.

Ms Maxwell said the government had overlooked much of the region when allocating the Commonwealth Games.

“Northern Victoria covers more than 100,500 square kilometres, around half of the state,” she said.

“There are 27 local government areas in my electorate, and yet only one of those, Bendigo, has been earmarked so far as a venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“While the multi-city model is worthy of credit, much of my electorate has been overlooked to date.”

Ms Maxwell also highlighted the need for rowing to be added to the events, saying that it was perfectly reasonable to do so.

“Sixteen core sports and four para-sports have so far been agreed between the state of Victoria, the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Australia,” she said.

“Typically there are 17 or 18 sports competed at the games, so I am hoping there is room for a couple of additions.”

Lake Nagambie was pinpointed as a major venue with capacity to be displayed at an event like the Commonwealth Games.

Making the most of 2022 at MSC IT’S been a great start to 2022 for Mansfield Secondary College (MSC), with students returning en masse following a challenging stop-start previous year courtesy of the ongoing pandemic.

“We have had a great start to the year here at MSC,” said acting principal, Janessa Burkhardt.

“The students have returned to school ready to learn and we are all appreciating the new facilities.

“This year is a special year for our school.

“It marks the 60th anniversary of the college.

“We plan on celebrating this milestone with the community early in term four.”

The school also recently unveiled the logo and announced the student who made it.

Emily Doig created the winning design of the MSC 60th Anniversary logo competition, a design

which people will see across a variety of mediums this year, in recognition and celebration of Mansfield Secondary College’s 60th Year.

The new dual court stadium has been a fantastic addition to the school and the broader community, hosting a number of sports and activities - including polling for the recent federal election.

A new STEAM room for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics has been built on the ground.

It opened last year and has been welcomed by students in providing an environment more conducive to learning.

Former students will remember B block, which was getting a tad run down these days; it’s been demolished to create more open space for students.

“I was lucky enough to be able to go along to the ‘Hands on Trades’ Expo that was held in Winton,” said Ms Burkhardt.

“Year nine, 10 and 11 students also attended the event.

“It was a comprehensive expo with many stalls from various trades.

“It was great to see our students making the most of the activities and information on offer.”

Cally Grogan took a group of 9 VCE art students to Melbourne to visit the

The works on display are the best from VCE last year.

And the year 11 Outdoor Education class recently went on a canoe trip on Lake Eildon for three days with their teacher Amanda Jones, experiencing fantastic weather.

The rains held off long enough for the students to complete the annual cross country event a couple of weeks ago, too, although it was chilly and drizzly weather on a recent Monday for the Cancer Research Fundraiser.

Some brave MSC staff endured several buckets of icy water as the school raised $569.

Country Universities Centre providing real benefits to local students COUNTRY Universities Centre - Ovens Murray opened a new educational site in Mansfield earlier this year, providing all higher education students with free study facilities.

The Mansfield site is equipped with dual-screen computers, high-speed internet, free printing and academic support.

It is open seven days a week, from 7am to midnight.

“Students can be studying at any university, doing any course and we can support them,” said centre manager Mark van Bergen.

“It is a totally free service for students.

“When you have an

assignment due or an exam to prepare for, having a physical space where you can move away from your kitchen table and the distraction of home can make such a difference.”

Mark Bergen said about half a dozen students have been using the facilities since they opened, but he believes that will grow as more students find out about the site.

The Mansfield site is located within Mansfield Adult Continuing Education Centre (MACE).

Mansfield-based education co-ordinator, Courtney O’Brien, said the response from local students has been very positive.

“Students have been grateful that we’re there because a few of them live outside the town, where internet access isn’t that great, so they’ve been happy to have somewhere reliable to come,” Courtney said.

“The other thing they really appreciate is the after hours access, which is important for people who work during the day.

“Our learning skills adviser, Jane Leonard, has come on board as well.

“She focuses mainly on the academic assistance; a couple of students have got assistance from her with referencing, so that help has also been really good for them.

The Farmhouse goes orange LAST Wednesday, the Farmhouse showed their support for the local SES by celebrating Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW).

“We put out an invitation to the SES a couple of weeks ago for them to join us for a morning tea today in their honour,” said Farmhouse founder, Kim Stoney.

“We were absolutely thrilled when so many SES super heroes joined us for orange cake made by our amazing kitchen team.”

After the excitement of the SES trucks and lights, complete with a display in the Farmhouse car park, everyone sat down together and shared morning tea.

“We gathered as a community, bringing together children attending childcare, Nature Kinder (3yo kinder) and Bush Kinder (4yo kinder),” said Kim. “It was such a special day.”

As the Farmhouse has its own kitchen on-site, the kitchen crew designed a wonderful orange-dedicated menu for the day.

“The children enjoyed pumpkin soup for lunch, pumpkin and cheese scones for afternoon tea served together with cantaloupe, watermelon and oranges,” Kim said.

“We loved being able to show our local SES how important they are to our community and how grateful we are for their dedication.”

“HEALTHY choices are promoted in our Bush Kinder program and this certainly includes healthy food choices,” said Kim Stoney, founder of the Farmhouse.

Instilling a ‘paddock to plate’ approach, in conjunction with adopting the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden ethos, sees Bush Kinder children thriving in this sustainable environment.

“This hands-on learning approach enables children to develop a broad knowledge base by incorporating genuine life lessons into their every day, “ said Kim.

A future with purpose at Steiner

By GLEN HOOD, Principal Mansfield Steiner School AS well as being the principal of Mansfield Steiner School I am a parent of a six and seven-year-old who both attend the school.

Kate and I choose to educate them here for a multitude of reasons but there are a few core reasons that I hope many parents will relate to.

Primarily, we would happily have any of the staff at the school teach our children.

They are committed, conscientious, caring people that work incredibly hard for their students.

The school has a wide variety of expertise and experience among its staff, and we feel lucky that our children have such positive role models around them.

Like any parent, we want the best for our children.

We want them to feel safe, secure and happy.

We want them to grow into people that believe in themselves and who are kind and caring toward others.

We want them to have the type of education that gives them a wide variety of opportunities in the present and in the future.

We want them to be engaged in the world.

We only get one childhood.

As parents, we value the fact that the school honours childhood by not rushing our children through it in a bid to get them to demonstrate academic skills at earlier and earlier ages.

We know that young children learn through play and that in kinder and prep this is fundamentally important to their development.

Equally important, is that they are guided in developing the social and self-regulation skills they will need to begin formal

When we first walked through the Mansfield Steiner Primary School it was impossible not to be captivated by the beauty of the grounds and the classrooms.

It is simply a warm welcoming environment.

We love the fact that student learning is supported by the creative, hands-on elements of the curriculum.

Being able to use your hands to create things by drawing, painting, knitting, stitching, carving, and sculpting builds confidence, dexterity and determination.

These activities are not fillers or extras, they are

integral to learning.

The outdoor physical side of their experience is equally important and the games and sports they play throughout the school are other elements of developing healthy strong resilient children.

The large grounds also give plenty of room to run and play.

Music is one of the joys of life and we like that our kids will experience and learn music in ever-increasing depth as they move through school.

The joy of music itself is enough and the level of expertise that students achieve is impressive, but we also know that learning music develops neural connections in the brain that support learning in other areas.

Of course, we want our children to master the skills necessary to read, write and eventually understand calculus (unlike their father).

But we want them to enjoy the journey.

The rich curriculum that Steiner schools follow draws on many significant periods of human history.

The students’ growth is paired with a corresponding part of history that effectively mirrors their own stage of development.

These connections mean that students connect with what they are studying.

Mansfield Steiner School continues to grow and now goes through to years 11 and 12.

The International Baccalaureate program (IB) requires that students be motivated and that they take responsibility for their learning.

The skills they gain throughout their schooling here enables them to do this and allow them to take on a program with a broad global focus that prepares them to guide their own future with purpose.

State horse trials held at showgrounds

By EMMA OLIVER MANSFIELD Pony Club recently hosted the 2022 Horseland Pony Club Victoria Horse Trials Festival at the Mansfield Showgrounds.

The two day festival held over April 14 and 15 was a huge success with 130 competitors from 48 clubs across the state participating in the event.

Despite the inclement weather, the overwhelming consensus from all participating individuals and clubs was that it was an incredibly well-run and enjoyable event, with participants also commending the amazing sportsmanship and camaraderie experienced over the weekend.

Mansfield Pony Club president Joanne Clegg said it was a huge honour to host a state event of such calibre in the shire.

“It was a massive effort and gamble for our strong but small club given the current climate,” she said “We didn’t know whether it would be able to go ahead with COVID looming.

“It’s such a relief that not only did it go ahead, but that we pulled it off and showcased Mansfield brilliantly.

“I’m so proud of our club.”

Seven local riders qualified to compete at the event, however, Charlie Hill on horse Fairfield Park Rocket was forced to withdraw due to a broken wrist.

In Grade Four A, three local riders competed, with Maddie Carvill on Argie placing third, Carly Marshall on Pav coming in at eighth and Grace Seymour on Danamar Banjo achieving eleventh.

Tara Craddick on Expresso competed in Grade Four B, taking out second in the

competition.

On top of individual placements, the lower grades are also scored in teams, with Tara, Maddie and Grace competing as the North Eastern Zone Rockets, taking out second place in Grade Four.

Carly was in the North Eastern Zone Hotshots, which placed seventh.

All riders thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, with the

Organiser Sally Hanratty said that in order to host the event they first needed a course of a certain standard.

“Previously the majority of our jumps were considered a Grade Five level, which is the second lowest grade,” she said.

“We built a whole new

course at a height of 110 centimetres, making the Mansfield course now a Grade One.” It was a substantial financial commitment by the local pony club to develop the course, which was self-funded by the committee and members through fundraising and events.

“Throughout the year all event money raised goes to-

wards maintaining and developing new infrastructure, and paying for instructors,” said Sally “It was fabulous to be able to construct such a high quality course, which will not only benefit our local pony club members, but also our adult riding club and those who are involved in Equestrian Australia.

“Our vice president, Mike Davies, was responsible for designing and developing the cross country course, and it was thrilling for all involved to see it in use and hear such positive feedback.”

Builder Mike Pineo constructed the course, with riders from as far afield as Horsham and Mildura travelling the distance to take part, all commenting on how fantastic the course was.

Not only was the course a huge success, but the overall festival was enjoyed by all.

A dinner on the Saturday night at the Ed Harris Pavilion, with a live auction overseen by Daniel Craddock raised over $2000 for the club.

And the café run by Karen Marshall out of the new club rooms, along with the canteen overseen by Narelle Seymour, both contributed significantly to fundraising.

“We’d also like to thank the numerous local businesses that sponsored and supported the festival,” said Sally.

“It was a huge effort from not only the pony club and members, but all the volunteers, and the North Eastern Zone itself.”

Hereford breaks record with $130k price tag THE Hereford breed stamped its dominance in the market posting a thumping top price of $130,000 and a new record average of $15,794 at the 57th Herefords Australia National Show and Sale.

Held on May 12 at Wodonga, the national sale drew buyers from NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland, and was interfaced with AuctionsPlus.

Billed as one of the largest multi-vendor sales in southern Australia, it catered for 34 vendors from four states.

Overall, 102 bulls sold from the 106 offered for a 96 per cent clearance, gross of $1,611,000 and average of $15,794.

In the sale breakdown, a total of 59 junior bulls sold to a top of $35,000 and average of $12,847 while 43 senior bulls sold to a top of $130,000 and average of $19,837.

Creating plenty of excitement in the sale barn was Mawarra Ultra Star R182 selling for a new record top price of $130,000 to Tom Nixon, Devon Court Herefords, Drillham, Queensland.

The price eclipsed the previous top of $103,000 set

The 24-month-old Mawarra Ultra Star R182 by US sire Endure 173D was sold

by Peter and Deanne Sykes, Mawarra Genetics, Longford, Victoria, and had been sashed as the intermediate and grand champion bull by judge Steve Reid the day before.

Weighing 1004kg, Ultra Star had BREEDPLAN figures of +123kg for 600-day weight, +27kg for milk, +82kg for carcase weight, and +8.6sqcm for eye muscle area.

Mr Nixon confirmed the New Zealand semen rights were sold to the Robbie family, Otapawa Herefords, NZ. He had a strategic plan to

buy two full brothers and had earlier paid $35,000 for the top price bull at Mawarra’s on-property sale, Mawarra Ultimate R140, partnering with Cascade Poll Herefords, Currabubula, NSW. Vendors Peter and Deanne Sykes were overwhelmed and humbled by the result.

“The outlook for the breed is great with people willing

to spend money on good genetics with the right traits,” Mr Sykes said.

“Our grass-fed markets are going well for Herefords and the cattle sold today certainly had those carcase traits and doing ability Herefords are known for.”

It was a day full of emotion for vendor Andrew Green, Yarrandabbie Here-

fords, Barfold, Vic, when his bull Yarrandabbie Richard R004, named in honour of his late father, Dick Green, sold for the second top price of $70,000 to Marc Greening, Injemira Genetics, Book Book, NSW. The 23-month-old bull had been sashed as reserve intermediate champion and was sired by Glendan Park Panama P004.

Herefords Australia National Show and Sale (Wodonga) committee chairman Alvio Trovatello described the event as a “great outcome and clearance”.

“Elite stud sires were making record prices and very good top end commercial sires sold well,” Mr Trovatello said.

“It was good to see the strong commercial support with repeat buyers and quite a few people bidding online.

“The social aspect is a big part of it - it’s a big few days on the Hereford calendar.

“Since COVID has come and gone people have really been looking forward to the event this year with a different level of optimism off the back of cattle prices and the season.”

Marriage in the air in Jamieson

LAST Saturday in Jamieson was a very social affair, with many local residents and visiting volunteers handing out how to vote papers at the Jamieson Memorial Hall.

The passing visiting traffic was steady as the sun warmed the chilled bones of the early attendees.

All in all it was a very well attended voting event, with the Jamieson General Store and the Jamieson Café caring for the constant flow of clients.

The scrutineers did not have to leave their posts.

Two CFA members Grant McRostie and John Eason were able to take the required (FCV) field command vehicle to the destination at Matlock via Woods Point.

Captain of Woods Point CFA Andrew Merlo had called for assistance, as two hunting hounds had fallen 25 metres down a mine shaft.

SES members gathered at the Woods Point Fire Shed, as did the High Angle Rescue vehicle from Wangaratta.

They were advised to meet there and await further instruction.

The Jamieson FCV was able to enter Grant Track and then the men walked many metres to the mine site, then climbed down to the shaft.

All was well as the hunters had worked for hours and were successful in the hound rescue.

All remained on alert until the word came through, a safe rescue had been successfully carried out.

The selfless contribution of these volunteers knows no boundaries.

Following the service the bridal couple had photographs taken in the magnificent Jamieson autumn garden of the Blackledge family.

The guests then enjoyed a superb wedding feast created by Janene, Victoria’s aunt.

The newly married couple will holiday along the Great Ocean Road, following a gift of a helicopter trip over Jamieson in all its autumnal beauty.

THE Jamieson wedding of Victoria Burns and Guy Manicom was celebrated on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 - a very significant date.

The couple officially became a couple 10 years ago on May 18, 2012 and became an engaged couple nine years later on May 18, 2021.

Victoria is the youngest daughter of Donna Ridley and granddaughter of Jude and the late Ian Ridley from Jamieson.

Victoria’s aunt Janene Ridley and uncle John Eason own Mount Terrible Winery in Jamieson, so the scene was set for the romantic celebrations to take place at the winery.

With the plans adhered to the last full stop, COVID-19 stepped in adding a little discord to the plans.

Her father Colin Burns tested positive on Friday, May 13, brother in law Jonathan tested positive on Saturday, May 14, and on Monday, May 16 her sister Elizabeth tested positive.

Guy is an IT man, so as the guest list was diminishing, Guy set up a ZOOM coverage of the event so all the family could be in presence and celebrate the occasion.

In the absence of her father Colin, Victoria chose to walk herself down the aisle.

She wore a blush coloured tulle wedding dress with a metre long train and delicate lace bodice, she also wore flowers in her hair and looked a dream.

The sun shone every time Victoria went outdoors, the rain stopped which was a wonderful omen.

Squash juniors make a smash BENALLA squash juniors once again did themselves proud in the third of the juniors tournaments which was held in Wodonga.

Anakin Pastuszka showed what he’s made of when he was awarded the most improved player of the tournament in the Country Junior Squash tournament in Wodonga on May 15.

Anakin was moved up a grade and proved he was one of the players to watch, continually improving as the year progresses.

So too Addison Pastuszka also showed she was not to be underestimated; Addison also moved into a higher grade, coming runner up in B grade and was recognised with the tournament’s female sportsperson award, for her attitude on and off court, being a great role model for younger players.

All five Benalla players who attended the Wodonga tournament showed that Benalla has some talented squash players who are thriving on these tournaments, playing different juniors from many locations in Victoria and NSW. Cold weather leads to warm contest in tennis MONDAY, May 16 saw round two of the Euroa and District Ladies Winter Tennis Association (EDLWTA) happening around the area.

Mansfield Red players, Karyn Fraser, Carolyn Murray, Loretta Armitage and Jo O’Brien, battled against Terip Terip who had Mansfield Black players Rhonda Carpenter and Susie Treacy sharing a spot due to a late withdrawal because of illness.

Lots of banter throughout the matches with Rhonda and Susie being asked to remember which club they belonged to even though they were playing for Terip.

Karyn and Carolyn jumped out of the gates taking the lead before Frances Lawrence and Phoebe MacDermid warmed up and overtook them taking the set out 8-6.

Junior football heats up in the cold

to Rhonda Carpenter and Jenny Martin battled hard with many of their games having several deuces before Terip got that elusive point to give them the game.

Mansfield Red couldn’t take a trick and Terip took all 6 sets for the day.

Karyn and Jo did take Frances and Jenny to a tie break, but just couldn’t get that vital point to take the set.

As usual a delicious afternoon tea and chit chat was enjoyed before everyone headed home.

Mansfield Blue headed across to Euroa with fill-in Natalie Taylor playing for the first time ever in this comp.

By all accounts Nat enjoyed the day so much that she’s keen to come back for more.

With Sue and Lenore also newcomers to the comp they combined well with stalwarts, Chris and Lyn to take four of the six sets.

Clare and Nat also had a tie break set going down to Lyn and Lenore.

Shows how close things can be as if Mansfield had taken the tie break it would have been three sets apiece, but not to be this time.

The last pairing was Moglonemby vs Benalla at Moglonemby’s home courts, which they share with Euroa.

kindly filling in for Benalla.

Moggy took out the first two sets, with a tie break obviously the theme of the day with Mary and Lyn getting the winning point against Deb Siggers and Robyn.

The next two sets were mirror images at 8-3, one set to Benalla, one to Moggy.

This meant it was going to boil down to the last two sets.

With Claire and Robyn winning their set for Benalla against Deb Seach and Lyn 8-3, then Maureen and Deb Siggers taking theirs 8-6, Benalla took out the points for the day with three sets apiece , Benalla by two games.

Mansfield Black had the bye.

Despite the cold weather, the women playing in the Mansfield autumn night competition warmed to the contest with much enjoyment, laughter and excellent tennis.

COLD overnight weather saw a heavy dew greet the under 13s first thing Saturday morning.

The Eagles hit the ground running and inspired by Patty Cripps the night before, Noah Langlands played his best game for the season, hitting the packs hard and tackling even harder, the Cats and Blues didn’t know what hit them.

Jack Bryant was everywhere providing a great target all over the ground and Sam Kynnersley and Sam Hough worked tirelessly in the ruck providing onballers Josh Taylor, Jay Kynnersley and Lenny Gardiner with first use.

For the Blues, Phoebe Guppy was brilliant, using her body to win contests and positioning herself perfectly all day to win the ball.

Zac Hotton was outstanding in the ruck, following up his tap work with repeat efforts and attack on the contest.

Special mentions to Mitchy Howe one out in the goal square snagging a beautiful goal and providing multiple contests throughout the day.

Gussy Robinson was also dangerous all day snagging 5 goals and playing the small forward role to a tee, with his high pressure and sublime goal sense.

Jay Hotton played his best game. He stood up and began to use his size to influence the contest.

The Cats were strong all day ensuring even contests among the three teams, players were slick with the ball with many passages of play bringing each other into the game.

Seb Walker and Leah Storer were the award winners for the Cats with a special mention to Nick Hoskins for an outstanding game while for the Eagles and the Blues the awards went to Noah Langlands, Jack Bryant, Phoebe Guppy and Zac Hotton.

Once the dew had burnt off the oval the under 10s took to the Lords turf, on a magnificent autumn day.

The Eagles, Hawks and Demons put on a great show, with the importance of sharing the ball and teamwork being a focus of this week’s performance.

There were many passages of play involving skill levels of higher age teams.

For the Hawks, award winners included Ben Bruce who had a huge work rate all day, with many clearances from the middle and hitting up forwards with supreme precision.

He was joined by Logan Harcus who was huge in the ruck using his body to win many knockouts.

The Demons had solid contributors right across the ground but standouts and award winners were Addison Bertalli who had her best game of the season getting involved in many contests including rucking for a quarter, and Hayden Kent who was strong and tough down back repelling many forward advances and also enjoyed time on the ball, laying several tackles resulting in free kicks.

Many thanks to the initiative and action of Stew and Nick for running a barbecue on Saturday to raise funds for the club, this will be a feature moving forward for the season so make sure you bring your change and grab a sausage in the coming weeks.

Thanks also to the senior football club who invited the juniors into the rooms on Sunday for the game against Shepparton Swans so that the kids could be part of the pre-game preparation and speech.

Jarrod brings the Heath in men’s golf

By LAURIE HARCUS A WONDERFUL week of golf and a wonderful week for golf.

Tuesday’s Par event results: 1st - Bob Cullen +4 (h/c 14); 2nd - Shane O’Brien +1 (h/c 13); 3rd - Jim Sullivan even, 0 (h/c 17).

A very good day out for Bobby, +4 is an excellent score in the damp conditions and a low teens handicap.

Therefore, he played to a 10 handicap.

Shane was the only other player to be on the positive side of the ledger this day also was a star and a regular in the winner’s list.

Jim, another good result from a consistent performer, albeit, he did mention that he left a lot of shots out there on the course, obviously not as many as the rest of us.

Thursday’s Stableford results: A Grade: 1st - Steve Daykin 39 pts (12 h/c); 2nd - Alan Eustace 37 pts (13 h/c); 3rd Geoff Morris 34 pts (14 h/c).

Another outstanding performance by Steve, he is regularly taking home winnings.

One of the really early people who go out in the wettest and most difficult conditions of the day.

He played to single figures; very satisfying.

A very good score for Alan who is always a solid performer particularly as he has the distraction of playing with Bob Speed.

Geoff Morris, another good round, his game basically relies on whether his putter is working or not.

He is very strong down the fairway.

B Grade: 1st - Bob Speed 36 pts (h/c 21); 2nd - Tony Tehan 35 pts (h/c 30); 3rd - Ray Findlay 31 pts (h/c 23).

Good job Bob, obviously the slanging match with Alan didn’t do you any harm.

I have to be careful with

Bob because every time I put something disparaging about him I am told that his lawyer will contact me Monday.

As much as Bob won, the true winner was Tony Tehan who has not played properly for eight months due to a shoulder issue.

I was fortunate enough to play with this charming man; he played seriously well, considering his long lay-off.

Ray, another prize for you, this is not an isolated win, playing very consistently.

Scherini 37 pts (h/c 7); 3rd Maurie Walsh 36 pts (h/c 9).

Another outstanding day for Jarrod playing to a five handicap.

39 pts is excellent, we do not expect to see many 40 pointers until after winter, this is certainly more than equal to that.

Ah, Alex, what to say... another sterling round with your ever declining handicap.

Another nearest the pin also, a very regular occurrence (although he does say that I put the ‘jinx’ on him each time I mention this).

Glory for Mansfield golfers again

By LINDA TERRY GROWING: The club has grown steadily and has maintained its relaxed and inclusive atmosphere with three groups running this season: five to seven year olds, eight to 10 year olds, and 11+ years.

Soccer kicks off season

MANSFIELD Soccer Club has kicked off again this season on May 1, after a successful ‘Come and Try’ day on Sunday, April 3.

They will start again with three groups: five to seven year olds, eight to 10 year olds, and 11+ years.

Kate Stonnill, who’s been at the club’s helm for some time, has handed over the reins to Chris Nealon, who’ll steward the club moving forward.

The Mansfield Soccer Club was set up in 2002 as a grassroots club to introduce children (aged five to 16 years) to the game of soccer.

It had a very informal start with the focus on skills and fun, and was a great way to get out and run around on a cold winter’s morning.

Since then the club has grown steadily and has maintained its relaxed and inclusive atmosphere.

For a number of years, the club attended Gala Days in other towns, such as Benalla, Wangaratta, Myrtleford and Euroa, and played regular friendly matches against teams from Alexandra and Shepparton.

The club was very competitive and successful at these meets.

However, the challenge then became finding towns that have similar ages, especially the over 11 age group, as the club seemed to have outgrown other small clubs.

Unfortunately, a number of smaller clubs have since folded, so the competition has again been focused in Mansfield.

A new initiative in 2018 was the start of a social game for seniors (15yrs to adults).

KICKED OFF: Mansfield Soccer Club has kicked off again this season after a successful ‘Come and Try’ day in April.

It also gave those who have outgrown the Sunday game to continue to enjoy soccer.

They meet at 6pm on Wednesdays at the main oval and play under lights.

Players need to be registered with the club to play.

In 2021 the club finally moved to its new ground at College Park.

Although the season was impacted by closures the numbers attending were still strong and the new club room/kitchen is a great asset.

New goals and equipment was purchased, including a new line marker, after years of fundraising.

The Community Bank (Mansfield

and District Bendigo Bank) has been one of many strong supporters of the club which has been successful with two grants, the latest providing funds for a new barbecue which was put to work last Sunday.

This is part of the bank’s Community Impact Program for 2021, with 2022 applications now open.

The barbecue will provide the club with a way to continue fundraising for the club which helps to keep fees low and accessible to all.

MORE great news for our Mansfield golfers this week, when a contingent of both men and women hit the road for the Tri-State Masters which are held annually at Mildura - a 54 hole event played over three courses - Mildura, Coomealla and Riverside Golf Clubs.

Once again our team shone through with our men’s vice captain Rod Sargent winning the men’s 54 hole championship for the second year in a row.

Shelly Comerford and Shane Brook both won their respective women’s and men’s overall C Grade Championships, while our Sue Parsons won the overall Super Veterans event. Congratulations on such a great effort, team Mansfield.

Back a bit closer to home, the NE Vets team were victorious in their annual challenge against Dalhousie and Goulburn Valley - well done to the six Mansfield players who contributed to that result.

Some ladies also visited Hilltop for their Bowl on Thursday and Lyn Poulson was runner up in B Grade.

Then there are all those players who hit the course every week at home for our weekly comps.

A good field of 11 played on Tuesday and Chris Sullivan had a great nine holes winning with nett 41.

Wendy Hunt was runner up with nett 43 on a countback to Glenis Skinner.

Our Wednesday comp

was a gold course challenge - this shorter course can make for interesting times and ensures no complacency about what club to use where, as you approach the greens from quite new perspectives.

The field was a little smaller due to our Mildura travellers being out of the mix, but it was Meg Broomfield who shone with 34 points to win the day.

Nicki Cooper was runner up with 33 and 3rd Robyn Bridgewater 32 points.

Balls went to Jenny Koraus 32, Linda Terry 31 and Marion Sargeant 31.

Kylie Egan had a great day on the par 3s, winning the nearest the pins on the 3rd, 7th and 16th, while Marion Mitchell and Meg Broomfield claimed prizes on the 9th and 10th respectively.

On Saturday, just 9 ladies played stroke and Lorraine Cullen was the winner with a nice score of nett 70.

Sam Bailey was runner up with 73 and Lyn Poulson 3rd with 74.

Our Biggest Morning Tea is coming up on Monday, May 30 and ladies are asked to help make something or contribute to the raffle hamper/s.

This event, organised by vice captain Nicki Cooper is always a huge fundraiser for the Cancer Council which we proudly support through many of our golfing endeavours.

Everyone in the community is invited to come along and take part - the morning tea is always amazing.

Special tournament a success

ON THE GREENS with PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY THIS Sunday marks the official end of the 2021/22 bowls season for the Mansfield Bowls Club when the annual presentation morning will be held followed by a barbecue lunch and the annual general meeting.

The season has been successful with the A2s playing a tough pennant competition and the B1s almost bringing home the premiership flag being runners up in what had been a tremendous pennant season for them.

Last Friday a special tournament was played by 40 members being a mixed

pairs three game tournament sponsored by Mike Harrison’s Country Landscaping business.

At the end of the day there were five teams that won all three games but unfortunately two teams would have missed out on prizes, except the team of Marian Ryan and Steve Taylor took out the ‘best last game’ money.

Losing out by a mere six points was the team of Pam Zierk-Mahoney and Ian Morley from a countback putting them in fourth place.

Ryan and Taylor took out fifth place; George Peterson and Belinda Snider (3rd); Noel Jackson and Gwen Gray (2nd) and bringing home the

win by just one point was the sponsor himself, Mike Harrison who teamed up with Glenda Revell.

The tournament proved to be a great success overall and it is hoped another similar match will be played in the future.

In the meantime the club is preparing for the next pennant season with names being submitted for both the mid-week and Saturday competitions.

Home pennant will also be run again this year coinciding with the away pennant program - names also being registered for this competition which begins in October.

Social games are continu-

ing to be played both Tuesday and Friday afternoons - starting at 1pm, the afternoons in the colder weather are proving to be more successful.

Last Tuesday’s (May 17) winners were Glenda Revell, Ross Parson and Domingo Diaz (Mingo) on 32 shots with runners up Vicki Klein, Cathy Johnson and Theo Scheltinger on 30 shots.

And on Friday, May 13, some 26 members played off in a triples event with the winners being George Peterson, John Lobbe and Denis Sharpe on 32 shots against Ian Morley, Mike Harrison and Steve Lewis on 25 shots.

The feeds into Portia Keatch and Mia Tanner have improved massively over the last few weeks, and Milawa’s defence end had to work hard to get around Portia’s holds.

The first half of the game Bonnie Doon definitely made Milawa fight to keep their small lead.

As the girls worked the ball down the court, you could truly see this at their full potential.

The second half saw a mix of positions, with a return to the court, Jo Sheridan who worked alongside Allie making the shooting end look easy.

With Jess Harris and Alicia providing the reset options on the ring, the attacking really put Milawa defenders to the test.

In defence Cass, Jess.A and Meagan were proving the many options this team have when it comes to changing things up.

Unfortunately, the last quarter saw Milawa fight for their lead to which the Bonnie Doon girls could not

break.

In the end Bonnie Doon were able to walk away knowing they had played amazing netball and should be so proud of how far they have come this early in the season.

However, this week it was finally our turn, with Bonnie Doon B Reserve achieving an amazing milestone, for the first time in the club’s history they beat Milawa.

The girls came into the game this week knowing

that it was going to be both a mentally and physically tough game, but they knew they could be right up there with Milawa if they played their way.

Bonnie Doon came out firing in the first quarter, playing steady and smart netball.

The mid court combo of Ali Howie and Amy Chandler consistently worked the ball into the ring and Leith Mounsey and Chrissy Blunt converted goal after goal.

The defensive pressure from Maddie Cooksey in WD, and the defensive pressure from Hannah Sheahan and Cass Turner resulted in many turnovers and intercepts.

By the end of the first quarter, Bonnie Doon was in the lead by 7 goals.

Some changes were made in the second quarter with Michelle Tanner coming into goals and doing a great job in holding her player and getting the goals on the scoreboard.

We went into halftime with a very handy nine goal lead.

We knew Milawa would come out firing in the second half, therefore Doon mixed it up.

Poppy Seja came into C, Ali moved into WD and Leith moved into WA. The new combinations worked well, with Poppy settling into her first game for B Reserve and doing a great job of driving down court and working on the ring.

Cass Turner continued to dominate with intercept after intercept, she absolutely dominated in GK. Bonnie Doon came into the last quarter with a 10goal lead and the hunger to keep the lead and claim that win.

We played as a team and played our game, and Milawa did not stand a chance.

The attackers did a great job of driving down court, the goalers converted their goals and the defensive end

BONNIE Doon under 17s were extremely nervous to play against Milawa.

The girls worked amazing in defence and also in attack getting intercepts and goals during the game.

Tahlia was getting amazing intercepts all through the game.

While Tara moved everywhere on the court the whole time in centre and also getting great intercepts too.

Erin and Charlotte defended the ball spectacularly in the ring and getting the rebounds.

Poppy defended the ball during the whole game and created many wonderful turnovers which then allowed Chloe and Grace to put up their shots and getting most in and also getting the rebounds.

Casey came into goals for the first time and did outstanding work getting her shots in and barely missing while she still worked in and out of the ring the whole time.

In the end Bonnie Doon didn’t win but played an outstanding game.

Bombers seal the deal in a thriller

AFTER clawing their way back into the top four after a solid run of form, Bonnie Doon’s senior side travelled to Milawa to take on the heavyweight in the league for the past four years.

Unfortunately for the Milawa FC, they had impacts from COVID which saw them lose players for the day, but they are a very strong football club so a strong contest was expected.

The Bonnie Doon lads jumped out of the blocks with some crisp ball movement and set the tone for the entire game putting on a seven goal first term.

The midfield was on top from start to finish with Campbell Smedley leading the way in a dominant display.

His clearance work was a standout, and when he started hitting targets on his left foot we knew it was his day.

The forward group continued to grow in confidence, with Al Bennett (6), James Law (3), Will Goonan (2) and Ben Hedin (2) all contributing.

It was particularly pleasing to see the tackle count in the forward half, with several goals coming from that pressure.

and forward half which was complemented by Hayden Watkins, who had his best outing for the club.

Hayden made the wing his own and had good decision making and skill execution all afternoon.

While the back half had a lot less work to do than expected, Zak Bailey was a strong performer all day.

He was well supported by the likes of Conor Heaslip, Pat Smith and Zac Tanner as the Bombers held out Milawa’s forward attacks.

The end result saw Bonnie Doon run away with an 89 point win and continue to grow the group’s connection as the season rolls on.

Hayden Watkins was awarded the Foodworks Coaches Cup, while Will Goonan (Bonnie Doon Hotel), Al Bennett (Mansfield Pizza), Campbell Smedley (Fans Pick) were the other award winners on the day.

Next week the boys take on King Valley in another game that provides the chance to keep building momentum.

BONNIE Doon hit the road on Saturday and made their way over to Milawa.

The reserves’ first quarter saw a bit of a scrap early and Milawa proved to have the upper hand early.

The Bombers made some changes at quarter time which saw the back six get back in the swing of things.

With plenty of pressure around the contest William Wiggett and Luke Berriman were working well together out of the middle.

Mitch Purcell, Andy Marshall and Isaac Murray did well locking their opponents down.

Luke Jenkins, Locky Pinder and Hamish Dunsford hit the scoreboard and Pat Revell worked up and down the ground all day.

The half time break came around and the Bombers were neck and neck with Milawa.

The third quarter saw plenty of excitement with James Octigan really putting his mark on the game and Hamish Dunsford really sticking it to the Demons.

But Milawa weren’t giving up without a fight.

The Bombers outfit had a lift in the last quarter and got themselves in front by one point with five minutes to go.

None other than the general in Andy Marshall went back with the flight for a great mark, which saw the Bombers surge inside 50 with not much time left.

A centring kick to Hamish Dunsford saw him send a booming left foot kick straight through the middle.

The Bombers locked it up for the longest 60 seconds on earth causing stoppage after stoppage and there were plenty of smiles all round when the siren finally went.

FINE FORM: Hayden Watkins made the wing his own and had good decision making and skill execution all afternoon in the Bombers’ win against Milawa.

Skinner shoots and scores gold OVERNIGHT, Mansfield’s own Olympic Gold Medallist, Catherine Skinner, and Tokyo Olympians Laetisha Scanlan and Penny Smith won the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively for Australia in the Trap Women’s individual event for shotgun at the ISSF Grand Prix in Granada, Spain.

This saw a continuation of the impressive international form from the Australian Trap Women after collectively winning the gold medal from the ISSF World Cup in Lonato, Italy only weeks prior.

The Australian Trap Men also proved dominant in Granada with Tokyo Olympian Thomas Grice shooting a personal best in qualification where he led the field before going on to win the gold medal for Australia.

The Australian women finished as the top three qualifiers landing them all a place in the semi-finals where Laetisha Scanlan shot an impressive score of 25/25.

Catherine Skinner scored 22/25, and Penny Smith scored 21/25 with all three women qualify-

ing for the medal match.

In the medal match, Catherine Skinner and Laetisha Scanlan both scored 30 hits, entering a shoot off where Skinner hit one target to win the gold medal with Scanlan taking the silver medal.

Smith scored 21/25 to claim bronze.

The ISSF Grand Prix in Granada, Spain was a dominant display of shooting from the Australian Shotgun Team, and a promising sign as they head to the ISSF World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan at the end of May.

Under 14s make history at Traralgon FIRST QUARTER NOMINEE:

Mansfield U14 girls basketball team MANSFIELD’S Under 14 girls basketball team made history at the recent Junior Country Championships held at Traralgon.

They were the first Mansfield team to win a state tournament.

The Mansfield girls headed to Traralgon for their last tournament of the season, the Junior County Championships.

The tournament consisted of 38 clubs from across the state.

Day one was challenging for the girls being placed in a tough pool and had injuries to overcome.

They sat in fifth spot after some tough losses on the first day, but rebounded on day two for a string of wins that propelled them towards the finals on day three.

Mansfield played Phillip Island in the semi-final.

Settling into the game for the first time in the tournament they caused foul trouble to the opposition rather than for themselves.

Ella Mercieca had a great match, with strong rebounds and finishing off her shots; winning 45-21.

The girls had now earned themselves a spot in the grand final - the first time that a Mansfield team has ever made it that far.

They knew it was going to be a

tough match against Warragul who had defeated them the day before.

The girls stepped onto the court with revenge in mind.

The whole team stepped up and played an incredible match to take a convincing win over Warragul 53-26.

Alicia Langlands made many strong rebounds and brought the ball down, where Chloe Campbell and Ella Mercieca were unstoppable at the ring.

The team thanked Jason Campbell for coaching throughout the year and Bess Gillard for live streaming the game and enabling families, friends and supporters to watch.

For their historic performance and doing Mansfield proud, Mansfield’s U14 girls basketball team are worthy first quarter nominees in this year’s Rotary Sports Team of the Year Award.

Alli Walker - President, Mansfield Swimming Club NOMINATIONS for Alli have come in thick and fast over the past month or so.

And with good reason.

Mansfield Swimming Club members said that she does a phenomenal job as president, tirelessly organising pennants, coaching sessions, breakfast club, grants, equipment, media and communication, Fast Friday competitions and finances.

Alli is the go-to person for everything - and it is largely thanks to her contribution that the club has had such success across the state, a recent result being three young members who competed at the Schools State Championship at MSAC in Melbourne, which is an incredible achievement from a regional club.

A very good swimmer herself, Alli has been the driver of success for Mansfield swim club these past few years and at short notice, had to turn coach

at the start of the year too.

The club has seen dramatic growth in the past two years and her guidance and mentorship towards the members has seen them strive to be the best they can be.

Alli’s professionalism and excellent organisation skills have made it easy for the many swim parents to navigate the world of swim meets and has ensured we have been able to enter events across the state.

Club members have said that she makes it fun - not stressful - and that she has created a community where everyone feels accepted, no one is excluded and people want to do their best.

Alli is endearingly called ‘the Google of swimming’ and Mansfield’s swimmers believe she embodies everything that is essential in community sport.

Congratulations to Alli for her first quarter nomination in this year’s Rotary Sports Club Person of the Year Award.

Hayley makes national skate team selection ON THE ROAD: MPS year 5 and 6 students travelled to Shepparton last Friday for the Division Winter Sports Championship Day, with the boys football team winning all five of their games but falling just short in the final. Students competed in other sports too, including netball, soccer and tee-ball.

MANSFIELD Olympian and Australia’s highest ranked female street skateboarder has been selected on the Australian National Skateboarding Team and is aiming for her second Olympics to be held in Paris 2024.

Following the Tokyo Olympics, Hayley Wilson decided to have a break from international competition to focus on her filming with her sponsor Nike.

Hayley will head to Los Angeles on May 31 and soon after will fly out to Denmark to compete in the Copenhagen Cup in June.

Hayley’s current world ranking is ninth and with the top 48 in the

world invited to compete in the first Olympic qualifier she will head to Rome for the first qualifier at the end of June.

It was also announced this week that Hayley is one of 18 female skateboarders to compete in the Street League Skateboarding championships taking place across the USA and Brazil.

In between competitions she will be touring and filming with the Nike Team in the USA and Sweden.

After many lockdowns Hayley is looking forward to the opportunity to once again compete overseas and work on filming her own video part.

CHOSEN ONE: Hayley Wilson has been selected on the Australian National Skateboarding Team and is aiming for her second Olympics to be held in Paris 2024.

By SHAUN McMAHON THE Eagles seniors were too strong for the Shepparton Swans at the weekend, soaring to a comfortable 51 point win at the Mansfield Rereation Reserve.

The Swans never looked in it, notching up only points in the first half, while the Eagles’ stray boots in the first quarter sharpened in the second to give them a comfortable lead at the break.

A relatively low scoring game provided much of the same in the third term, as the Swans finally got on the board and the Eagles extended their lead by another goal.

A steamrolling fourth term from the blue and gold boys put another four on the board to the Swans’ single, and the result was beyond doubt.

Mansfield Eagles 10.14 (74) to Shepparton Swans 2.11 (23).

Will Foster continued his good form this season with another bag of four goals,

while Ben Christopher and Dirk Koenen contributed two each.

Best on for the Eagles were Dirk Koenen, Brett Mahoney, Ben Christopher, Frazer Dale and Tim Costigan.

Positive players in an otherwise disappointing result for the Swans were Tyreece Collison, Isaiah Jones, Andrew Riordan, Max Clohesy and Diesel Batey.

The reserves match was a higher-scoring one-sided affair, with the Eagles clutching a massive 123 point victory.

William Christopher’s golden boots contributed nine goals to the tally, with Jack Christopher, Sam Morrow, Thomas Sheahan and Jack Kirley all shining lights in the big win.

Mansfield reserves 23.12 (150) to Shepparton Swans reserves 4.3 (27).

But the Swans were able to start the day with a win, when their 18s development side snatched a thrilling one point victory from the Ea-

gles’ up and comers.

Max Mahoney, Nathan Buchanan, Brayden Van Winden, Will King and Patrick Dunstan stood tall for the Eagles, the difference a single kick against the Swans’ best of Nate Sutherland, Enrique Goggin, Jye Fitzsimmons, Alex Buzzo and Noah Smith.

Final scores Shepparton Swans 18s 10.4 (64) to Mansfield Eagles 18s 9.9 (63).

The Eagles seniors currently occupy fourth spot with six wins and one loss, but face a tough test in their next game.

Next week they travel to Mooroopna, whose senior side currently sit at top spot on the ladder and will be fresh off a dominant victory against Benalla.

Swans fly against the Eagles A GRADE

Mansfield 25 defeated by Shepparton 66 Best on: Dempsey Parsons sponsored by Foodworks Coaches award: Cassandra Dolling sponsored by Byrne Seed Australia EAGLES were ready to change things up this week with everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Strangely we were playing netball on a Sunday so decided to change up a few game day traditions.

In our pre-game chat, coach Cousins wanted to see us continue growing as a team and improve on the things we have struggled with in previous games.

Her ask was for us to really focus on our lapses in our game and reduce these or even better cut them out altogether.

Eagles tend to have a really strong start to their game but then drop off in the second quarter so this was a major focus for us.

The girls went out in that second quarter down by 11 to turn the game around and win the quarter.

This showed the Eagles that they can work hard to achieve team goals and give these top sides a run for their money when put to it.

It is now just a matter of continuing to build our game quarter by quarter and learn to get some consistency throughout all four quarters.

The girls will go into this week’s bye with lots of things to work on but also a lot of positives to take away from Sunday’s game.

Keep working hard girls; the win will come.

consistently against the Swans but unfortunately didn’t get a win despite their incredible efforts.

In the first quarter, Bianna Kelly fought fiercely in GK working hard to turn the ball over, while Te in GA was amazing in the ring shooting impressive long bombs.

The second quarter showed Kara in WA providing strong passes into the ring and support in bring the ball down the court.

Millie in WD was a powerhouse in defence working tirelessly getting many intercepts.

Alicia worked incredibly hard in C to get the ball down the court making great passes to the shooters.

In the third quarter Matisse in GD was working hard not only in the defensive ring but also down the court to aid the attack end.

The fourth quarter had Tyla in GD who put up extreme defensive pressure on the strong Swans attackers.

Britt Kipping in GA was shooting with amazing accuracy and providing incredible vocal support towards the entire team.

The Eagles put up a great fight and everyone put in 100 per cent effort; sadly the score board didn’t reflect our efforts.

B RESERVE

Mansfield 61 defeated Shepparton 40 Best on court - Michelle Kain B RESERVE were geared up for a tough game against an unbeaten Shepp Swans, but were feeling confident off the back of two good wins the past fortnight.

We were without Stacey Doig this week, but our team of Robbie Robinson, Caroline Trenfield, Alison Eslake, Leonie Berry, Isobel Anderson, Sarah Anderson, Sue Dolling and Mich Kain hit the ground running and quickly had a 4-0 lead on the scoreboard in the first few minutes.

Numerous turnovers were created in the first quarter and we continued to build on our lead and went into the quarter time break seven goals up.

Our coach is always banging on about not just maintaining but

We won every quarter and finished the match with a final score of 61-40.

It was an accurate and slick display in our goal circle with both goalers enjoying the Sunday hit out and converting at almost every opportunity.

Add to that, some good offensive rebounds, quick passing and brilliant feeds from Leonie and Isobel, and our attacking end proved to be too strong for the Swans defence.

As a team, we have been working really hard at training on our defensive transition and across the court we were able make some really strong drives and create space for each other.

We loved seeing Robbie, Caz and Sarah having a crack at intercepts and getting many tips resulting in turnovers, and our goalers converting.

Alison is gaining more confidence each week in the WD position and today forced errors from her opposing WA as a result of her hands over pressure.

Our zone defence has been

a speciality for B-Res the last few weeks and this week was no different, again resulting in numerous turnovers in our goal and centre thirds.

It was a fantastic performance by all 8 players and our coach couldn’t be prouder.

We are well supported by our number one injured cheerleader Lily Manning, our clever and insightful assistant coach Dempsey Parsons and primary carer Lauren McGinty.

Mansfield 32 defeated by Shepparton 78 Best on - Chloe Judge Coaches Award - Tahlia Middleton READY for the first Sunday game this season the girls were jumping with excitement.

The first centre pass was a perfect one from Jess Dolling, setting up a good atmosphere for the game instantly.

As the mid court players focused on precision the ball flew through attack.

Molly Dunn and Rose Mathieson chased every dropped ball with a fierce look in their eyes which helped the team gain confidence.

Issy Byrne intercepted many balls with agility and ease, doing a fantastic job of turning the ball over.

In the ring Jamie Davis was on fire, jumping everywhere and catching some beautiful passes and finishing with a perfect shot every time.

Alongside her Tahlia Middleton dropped some gorgeous long bombs, having a go no matter where she was in the ring showing off her raw talent.

In defence Mia Ciarma and Chloe Judge hunted the ball down, never letting the opposition have an easy shot, together making a dynamic duo.

Brooke Kipping was always there to back them up with her long arms getting insane tips, really helping the girls to put on a good performance.

A shout out to the supporters that cheered us on throughout the game and supported all the girls through the hard parts.

The score didn’t reflect the amazing fight the girls put up.

Mansfield went into the game ready to go and showed how hard they were willing to work to stop Shepparton from getting too far in front.

In the end Jaspa Robinson received best on court and Amelia Clydesdale received coach’s award.

All the girls did a great job and look forward to the coming games.

First in fifty years

By LAURIE HARCUS THE scene is set, North East Pennant grand finals at Wodonga last Sunday.

Our scratch team played Albury with the handicap team playing Corowa.

On a calm and cool morning, the players loaded the Commercial Courtesy Bus at the club for their two hour drive.

It was quiet, introspective, a time of calmness and inner thinking of the challenge following, unaware of the soon unknown events unfolding historic events.

Pre final competition observations:  both teams finished top;  the scratch team was unbeaten;  the handicap team only had a loss in their first match;  both teams had 4:1 wins which is a huge boost in percentage, welcomed in all sports;  most importantly - motivation - our two ladies Pennant teams who played in the finals last week both won to make more history; I believe that the men and ladies are a close unit and share the happiness of each other’s successes.

The day was a very tight affair which I was privileged to watch along with Phil Conway (the North East president) and Mark Bettany (more later).

Without further ado, you can guess, both teams won in the last momentous, precipice moments of the matches with the too’s and fro’s that occur in match play; up one minute and down the next, exciting and scary.

The climax being that both matches were won on the last hole of the day with all teams locked in at two wins each.

I would generally not single out events as it is a team competition.

On this occasion it is well worthwhile.

SOLID GOLD: Mansfield’s handicap pennant team also brought home the gold; the third win for the handicap team in four years. Pictured (from left) Steve Chisolm, Peter Vallance, Brad Grant, Geoff Brown and Chris Kerr. was on the 18th fairway, neck and neck with a challenging opponent, a wayward second shot by Paul was hidden in trees on the right of the fairway about 80m from the green, his opposition straight down the centre and pitched to about 2m.

Out of view was Paul peering through maple leaves and trees getting rid of their autumn leaves.

A calculated skilful shot put him to the front of the green, a splendid chip to about 1.5m and an also immaculate putt. The poor other lad, missed his putt, game over, season over.

An equally exciting and dangerous assignment for the handicap team in the dying moments was to one of our newest and least experienced players, Chris Kerr - who came into the team as a fill-in after week one and did not lose a match from then on.

It was looking very precarious be-

ing two down with three to play.

What a challenge, what a guy.

He levelled on the last and a playoff was imminent.

By this stage the Pennant champions had finished and were there to walk down the 19th fairway with him.

He played the perfect hole, straight drive, excellent second hit, chip over bunker to about 1.5m and then down.

Game over.

What does this mean?

The third win for the handicap team in four years after losing two seasons through COVID. The previous two wins were all under the guidance of Phil.

Prior to that Rob Fankhauser led the team, so many times, so close.

The first win for the scratch team since 1971.

That sums up how special.

Just a few more observations.

I believe that it was the camaraderie that assisted our teams and got us through, besides our immense talent.

We played against towns/cities which, population wise, were Goliaths and us the minnows.

I spoke to Rod Sargent, captain of the team and club vice-captain, very early this year as we were both new to our positions.

“What do you think Rod?” I asked.

“Hey, mate, I think we are in with a big chance, we have more than a very good team.”

After that final Rod and Sheryl (ladies captain) drove to Mildura so that he could defend his Tri-state title from last year.

Dedication we all think.

Back to the final.

Mark Bettany accompanied the team to the NSW border to support them.

Mark has played pennant for five decades and graciously gave up his position this year, albeit still playing to a very low single figure handicap and could have still been there.

He now has another skill he is perfecting: lawn bowls.

The team unanimously impressed on me the importance of him being there.

Our team were often surrounded

by Albury personnel who could well have been hecklers.

Glad Mark was there.

The town is so proud.
