Alarming rise in our fatal road toll

AT the rate of road deaths across the state this year the number of fatalities could exceed 280 by December 31. With only six weeks left until the New Year arrives the current adjusted road toll stands at 257. This is the highest number of road deaths so far this year since 2008. Over the past three weeks six deaths have been recorded as part of the road toll within the Mansfield – Strathbogie - Murrindindi shires.

Four of these deaths occurred at Piries on November 12 and a single person died on the EuroaMerton Road on November 3. Another death was recorded last Thursday morning when a driver

died at the scene after his vehicle collided with a truck on the Melba Highway near Glenburn. Victoria Police are now calling for drivers to be more aware of bad road conditions and to pay attention to driving habits. Assistant Commissioner for Roads, Glenn Weir said, “We know that 2023 has been a horror year for road trauma, both all across

Victoria but also most other states in Australia which are all seeing higher than normal rates of fatal and serious injury collisions. “This is particularly so in the North East of the state. “The police areas of Mitchell, Greater Shepparton, Benalla and Murrindindi have a total of 33 lives lost this year. “This is 10 up on the 23 lives lost at the same time

and emergency services. “Victoria Police will be out enforcing, but we need your help to self-regulate your behaviour on the roads.” Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish said, “Lives lost on Victorian roads this year tragically already exceed last years numbers and fatalities on rural roads in Victoria have increased by 31 per cent compared to eight per cent in Melbourne. ■ Continued page 2
