MARCH INTO MARCH EVENTS

Mansfield Secondary off to a flying start By SAMUEL O’BRIEN MANSFIELD Secondary College is in the swing of things with new Year 7 and 12 cohorts excited to take full advantage of what the school has to offer. The new Year 7 cohort has hit the ground running, adapting to a new school and new learning structure with ease. They were both excited and nervous on their first

day, transitioning from the oldest in the student body to the youngest. Miki Murakami said she liked that classes went straight into learning, not taking time to get settled and organised. Felix O’Meara said he was excited to experience the variety of subjects on offer, noting that subjects like humanities, science and woodwork weren’t directly taught in primary school.

Archie Dunn agreed, explaining that science was quite appealing to him because, “We get to do cool projects.” Lily Olver noted the variety of electives on offer, allowing students to follow their passions and interests. Felix noted that the transition to high school was a bit easier, helped by having the same class for groups of his subjects. “I get to see different

teaching strategies from different teachers,” he said. The Year 12 cohort was also nervous starting school for the last time, worried about the future and their final assessments just on the horizon. Archie Storer said, “I was stressed in the first few weeks but it is starting to get easier now I think.” Ben Les, an avid sportsman, noted that the previous years of school

felt like a practice run and now that assessments were counting to their final scores, the pressure was on. “It’s nerve-wracking but I think we are all pretty excited as well,” he said. The students felt pressure from the high performance of the previous cohort too, noting that it was a high bar; however Amy Camilleri, who is aiming for a degree in nursing and midwifery said she felt supported

by the school, having been connected with the industries she wanted to work in in the future. “I’m already working in aged care at the moment and I’ll have a certificate and be able to work when I go to university,” she said. While their sights are set beyond Mansfield at the moment, the Year 12 cohort feels a strong connection to the local community. ■ Continued page 3
