Housing shortage could see pensioners ‘left out in the cold’

SEVERAL ‘letters to the editor’ in the Mansfield Courier recently heightened the need for more affordable housing, particularly for pensioners and low income earners.

Glenys Woods, in her first letter to the Courier (Do you know this person? August 24) pointed out the dilemma pensioners have in existing on a low income, paying high rent and not being able to feed and clothe themselves.

Ms Woods said after paying her rent (which equates to more than half her fortnightly pension) she is left with barely enough to buy groceries, necessary medications, pet food, car registration, electricity services - let alone buy petrol for her car to get her around.

She cannot afford to heat her small unit every day as that would raise her electricity bill.

Ms Woods was told if she wanted alternative housing she would have to leave Mansfield; the town she was born in, grew up in and has

Ms Woods said she does not want to be seen ‘whinging’ but she would like to see councils and politicians take up the cause for pensioners and elderly.

“We have nowhere to go if we are told to move out, and to be told if we need to get help with more affordable housing, we would have to move towns, move away from family, friends - that is not fair,” she said.

Ms Woods also believes younger families these days, particularly in our culture, do not want elderly parents living with them.

“Our children want their own lives, their own homes and although they are still willing to care for their parents, they don’t necessarily want them living with them.”

Ms Woods is not the only pensioner in this situation.

She can tell the stories of at least three others in and around Mansfield that are in a similar position, paying higher rents and leaving themselves with very little to live on.

“We all seem to manage but we do our shopping very

sparingly, we buy our clothing from opp shops, we can’t afford luxuries,” she said.

Another pensioner, who did not wish to be named, said she had been looking for affordable housing for more than 12 months.

The pensioner said she was offered a tiny two room unit in another town by the Housing Commission but felt it was not suitable as it had no back yard or garden for her dog to run around, nor did it have fencing.

And because she refused this first offer, she believes she may have gone to the bottom of the waiting list - if there is one.

“The Salvation Army said if I could find someone with available space on their block of land, or backyard, they would organise a ‘granny flat’ to be located onto it, but this would only stay for as long as I need it,” the pensioner said.

“When I die or move on the flat would be removed again; it would only be a temporary measure and the owner of the land would have to agree to it.

“It would also mean having the flat connected to power, water and sewerage.”

The pensioner did say that the Salvation Army representative had been extremely helpful and was pushing Housing Commission to find more suitable accommodation in or close to Mansfield.

“I don’t want to move out of the Mansfield area as it would mean leaving friends behind and changing my doctor, my pharmacy and other services that I receive; it would be too hard.

“I have lived here for the majority of my life.”

The pensioner said at present her landlord was trying to put the rent up again, the third time in two years, but she had been advised to stay put for the time being.

Ms Woods said she knew of the scheme to put granny flats into family members’ properties, but the costs to family or the owners of the land included connection to services and the removal costs when the unit was taken away again, so it is not a ‘no cost’ solution.

Homes Victoria (Department of Families, Fairness and Housing) confirmed there are four social housing properties in Mansfield currently vacant, with three undergoing redevelopment and one that will be re-tenanted soon.

They also said there were currently 66 applications on Victorian Housing Register that had listed Mansfield as one of their five location preferences.

But they also said there is good news to come.

“We are ensuring thousands more Victorians have a safe place to call home thanks to the landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build,” said a Homes Victoria spokesperson.

“Through this unprecedented investment in housing, there are 31 homes recently completed or under construction in the Mansfield local government area.”

LOCAL HOUSING STATS: Mansfield bucks the regional Victorian trend in all housing ownership and renting categories

Tackling the housing crisis in Mansfield

RECENT census data indicates that fewer than 60 people lived in social housing in Mansfield in 2021.

However, Mansfield Council’s business support service deals directly with real estate agents, who are reporting that some seniors find that the increased rental prices are too steep.

A more significant proportion of rental wait lists is reported for ‘younger families’ and ‘key workers’.

Data shows that 44.5 per cent of residents fully own their property, much higher than the average 37 per cent for the rest of regional Victoria.

It also points to just 15 per cent of the residents renting, where the regional average is 22.6 per cent.

Also within that, there is only 1.4 per cent renting ‘social hous-

ing’, less than half the regional average.

Census data also shows that Mansfield experienced a 3.3 per cent population growth, with the current population being 5421 - nine years earlier than predicted.

Council said it is these significantly underestimated predictions that have had a major impact on land availability and affordability in Mansfield.

They also said they continue to advocate for housing affordability and to consider how it might influence it, which they noted can be done in several ways.

Directly, they have been influencing the planning scheme to ensure sustainable growth as the demand for housing in the shire increases.

They also have a role in advocating for housing affordability through its partnerships and by

ensuring appropriate conditions for development.

For example, Tourism North East have recently been successful in obtaining $550k funding for the Workforce Attraction, Retention and Affordable Housing Project.

“It’s important to acknowledge that housing affordability is a growing national issue,” said Mansfield mayor, Cr James Tehan.

“We have had significant population growth and have made decisions to ensure our growth strategically benefits our community.

“Council continues to work to increase the supply of housing through planning scheme amendments.”

As published in a recent Mansfield Courier article, council is looking to rezone part of the land on Dead Horse Lane from farming zone to residential, which will enable housing

If you do need housing help, there is a transitional house for homelessness, Hames House, and Vinnies provides free transitional accommodation for men, women and children who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk.

Accommodation is available for up to six weeks.

If you are a pensioner, you may be eligible and can apply directly through Centrelink.

The Victorian Government’s Private Rental Assistance Program (PRAP) is available to eligible renters who are in financial hardship or survivors of family violence who will be able to sustain their rentals with some support.

Mansfield Council also offers its own financial counselling service.

MANSFIELD Shire Council announced it appointed Kirsten Alexander as its new chief executive officer last month, and Ms Alexander commenced on September 5 after interim CEO Bill Millard concluded.

Mr Millard took on the role after Kaylene Conrick stepped down as CEO on July 8.

Ms Alexander, who has been council’s general manager for infrastructure and planning since 2020, was appointed to a fouryear term following endorsement at a meeting of council.

Mayor James Tehan said the recruitment process, conducted

by Davidson Recruitment, was thorough with many strong applicants.

“The appointment of a new CEO is one of the most important roles of a council and we’re pleased with the outcome,” said Cr Tehan.

“Ms Alexander has extensive local government and senior management experience, and has proven herself as a strong leader.”

Ms Alexander has previously worked for several other councils in prominent roles, including a stint as the projects and infrastructure manager on Mt Buller.

But before all that she served as mayor in her native home of Adelaide, in the Charles Sturt Council, where she developed her passion for engaging with communities.

Her route into local government came when a plan to give away a park created a large and unhappy group of residents, which culminated in 600 people packing into the Charles Sturt council chambers to save it.

A community group was formed off the back of this protest, which was headed up by Ms Alexander.

“I certainly didn’t set out to end up in the council,” she said.

“But you develop a bit of a profile when you do something like that.”

Before she knew it, off the back of that campaign she was elected as major in 2010.

“I liked working with the community as mayor.

“It was not where I ever planned to be, but I love local government and I always encourage people to get involved and put their hand up for election.

“It can be tough, but I think the good outweighs the bad 10 to one.

“I just wanted to effect change and have a council that listened to the community.”

That still forms her approach to council to this day.

“You can’t always do everything that everyone wants, but you need to hear from enough voices so you know what the majority wants,” Ms Alexander said. “(Former CEO Ms Conrick) Kaylene had a really strong focus on community engagement and I want to continue and build on that.”

Both her and husband Neil grew up and met in Adelaide, but made the move to Victoria in 2015.

Mr Alexander is an engineering drafter that works from their home here in Mansfield, and they have two kids in Leon and Kara - both in secondary school.

They originally made the move when Ms Alexander took up management jobs at Mildura Council, and then nearby Wentworth Council.

“Wentworth is similar to Mansfield,” she said.

“In that it is a large area with a small population, but with distinctive townships within that area.

“So I also want to make sure there is plenty of focus on the outlying townships.”

A long time ski bunny, Ms Alexander originally moved to the area in 2018 to head up Mt Buller’s dam project and took up the Shire’s GM role two years later.

But now she is facing the big job.

“During my time as general manager I’ve been lucky enough to develop great relationships with community representatives

and leaders who have helped me understand the character of Mansfield Shire,” said Ms Alexander.

“I think Bill has done a great job in the interim and his perspective has been really good and I’ve appreciated the time working with him.

“He comes from an area where the council and CEO have similar challengers to Mansfield, and not being from here, nor staying here, he is completely objective.”

Though it is a big job, she is up for the challenge.

“We do have plenty of challenges,” she said.

“It is always that classic council of; the roads, the footpaths and the bins.

“But the growth we are experiencing is the big one, but I think that will start to settle now that we are coming out of COVID. “We have had some pretty unusual situations, but that’s not to say we don’t have other challengers ahead, but I think we are now pretty well placed.

“We need to keep our focus on the customer service and delivering on council plans.”

“Like so many regional areas, the Mansfield hospital services such a large area - Mount Buller included,” Ms McLeish said.

“Mansfield is extremely popular with tourists and at peak times visitor numbers balloon, placing additional strain on the local health services.

“Mansfield has grown considerably in recent years and the local health service must be invested in now to ensure that locals and visitors to our popular region are looked after in their time of need.

“I don’t think they (Labor) will match this, but it needs to be done promptly.

“The age care facility build it is happening, so it makes sense to do it at the same time.

“The hard work is already done and the plans are there.

“We just need a government that will support it.”

Shadow Minister for Health, Georgie Crozier also said the choice was clear: “a rail line in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs in 15 years’ time or fixing the health crisis now?” she said.

However, it would be fair to assume that the health service would have welcomed the commitment given the redevelopment discussions that have been ongoing over the past three years.

Aside from a Mansfield hospital redevelopment, as part of their new health plan the Liberals and Nationals’ are also promising a new Albury/Wodonga Hospital, a new Shepparton Cancer Centre and Health School, a new West Gippsland Hospital, a new Mildura Hospital, a new Melton Hospital, a new Werribee Children’s Hospital, a new infectious diseases response centre, an upgraded Sandringham Hospital, an upgraded Daylesford Hospital, redevelopment of St Arnaud Hospital, redevelopment of Rosebud Hospital, redevelopment of Caulfield Hospital, and a new Armstrong Creek ambulance station.

They also plan on halving the elective surgery waiting list, free public transport for health workers, paramedic annual registration fee offset, drug and alcohol centres across the state, 2500 more mental health practitioners in schools and a $4500 rebate for IVF patients.

Though asked for a response and whether they will match this commitment, Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas MP and the Labor state government have not commented.

Mansfield Library ran the competition, which invited local children aged 4-17 to create a bookmark related to the theme ‘Dreaming with eyes open...’ which was the theme for this year’s official Children’s Book Week.

Library coordinator Justine Shelton was thrilled with the 73 entries that were received for the three categories and thanked the children for their efforts.

Entries submitted to the library will be on display throughout October.

All entrants will have their design returned to them as a bookmark.

Mayor Cr James Tehan congratulated the winners of the competition.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in the competition and created a bookmark to celebrate Children’s Book Week,” said Cr Tehan.

“The demonstration of creativity in our young citizens was encouraging and I was impressed by the talent and inspiration showed in the entries.

“While it was challenging to determine the winners, I congratulate those who were selected to receive a prize as part of the competition and I look forward to seeing how your designs are circulated through our

community,” said Cr Tehan.

The winners of the 13 to 17 age group category was Molly Diepeveen first and Amelia Stevenson second.

The second category for those aged nine to 12 years, first prize was taken out by Pichincha Sorn, first and Audra McCullion second.

Pichpanha said he felt nervous when he handed in his entry.

“But when I found out I won, I was happy and screaming,” she said “I was proud of myself”.

In the third category four to eight years old, Elodie was first and Felicity Bennett second.

All the winners received a book voucher and the library plans to make a display of the winning entries.

NEW homes under construction will be eligible for the State Government’s Solar Homes program, which has already helped more than 195,000 households lower their energy bills.

The changes will save homeowners up to $800 on installation costs by fitting panels as they wire the electricity to their new homes, as well as an average of $1073 each year in energy costs.

The expansion paves the way for the increasing electrification of homes, while opening the program to tens of thousands of additional households each year - with around 40,000 new homes built in Victoria annually.

Under the changes, eligible Victorians building homes will be able to apply for a rebate of $1400 as well as being able to access a $1400 interest free loan to install solar panels during construction.

Minister for Solar Homes, Lily D’Ambrosio, said energy prices are putting pressure on households, and expanding Solar Homes to new builds will help tens of thousands of Victorians save thousands on electricity costs and help us cut emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

“We’re putting power back into the hands of Victorian households - driving down energy costs and boosting supply, creating thousands of jobs and cutting solar installation costs for new builds by hundreds,” she said.

This investment has already cut Victoria’s carbon emissions by 1.6 million tonnes - equivalent to the emissions produced by 500,000 cars each year - while supporting 5500 clean energy jobs.

Household solar is expected to generate 12.5 per cent of Victoria’s 40 per cent renewable energy target by 2025.

This financial year, there are 64,000 government rebates available for solar PV systems.

Applicants must use a Solar Victoria authorised retailer and install a product included on the approved products list to qualify for the rebate.

Bogan Bingo brings the bucks SATURDAY August 10 was a celebration of all things bogan, with the Mansfield Primary School Parents and Friends committee transforming St Mary’s hall into a bingo hall, for the school’s annual fundraiser.

Nearly as good as KISS at Calder Park and better than a contiki tour, this high voltage evening drew a crowd of 110 all dressed to impress.

Rocking flannies, mullets, tramp stamps and moccasins with conviction, goon was the drink of choice and bundy was the go-to.

And nobody was standing on the outside looking in.

It was all in and eyes down for 10 rounds of bingo, with prizes on the night suitably bogan-inspired.

There were meat trays and slabs of VB, firewood and cash, bogan hampers and car care kits for those looking to spruce up the commodore.

And for those a bit prone to doing dirty deeds or mixing with the odd bad seed, there were legal fees on the table to be won.

combe were the boys who lit up the evening, calling the bingo and playing the tunes, leaving nobody down hearted or on some highway to hell.

“Everybody had an excellent time and we raised over $6000 for the school,” said Alisha Forrest of the Parents and Friends.

“We have just installed out ninja warrior course at the school, so the plan now is to consult the school community to see how this money can be best spent to support the learning and wellbeing

Welcome to our newest Mansfield citizens LAST week Mansfield welcomed four new Australian citizens as part of a citizenship ceremony.

As a sign of our ever-growing multi-cultural community, the four new citizens originated from Switzerland, France, China and Denmark.

A large number of family and friends attended the ceremony to witness the conferees make their pledge to became Australian citizens.

Mayor Cr James Tehan officiated at the ceremony and congratulated our newest citizens on pledging their

loyalty to Australia and making the commitment to being a part of Australia’s future.

“Inducting citizens into our Australian family at a citizenship ceremony is one of the highlights of performing my civic duty as mayor and it’s a privilege to be a part of such a significant day for these community members,” he said.

“Council is committed to making sure the ceremony is a special and memorable occasion for our community members as they decide to call Australia, and indeed Mansfield Shire, their home.

“While respecting their own heritage and diversity, I encourage them to embrace the Australian values and to speak up for what they believe in, as is their right as Australian citizens.”

Gold & silver for ‘Queens of Fudge’ at Tasmanian Fine Foods Awards MANSFIELD local fudge producers, Jeni Fleming and April Currie have both taken out awards at the prestigious annual Royal Tasmanian Fine Food Awards.

Ms Fleming brought home one gold and six silver awards for her prize-winning fudge while April Currie of Delatite Special Occasions took out two silver and one bronze in the same categories.

Gold was awarded to Ms Fleming’s ‘choc orange’ fudge with silver awards going to her orange Drambuie, cranberry and pistachio, loaded caramel, rum and raisin and salted caramel fudges.

Ms Currie took out silver awards for her espresso and jersey caramel fudge and a bronze for her after dinner mint fudge.

The wins, particularly for Ms Fleming, are back-to-back from last year’s awards but this time she has increased the number of medals.

“I’m delighted with the success I have had at the Royal Tasmanian Fine Food Awards over the last two years,” Ms Fleming said.

“It’s a lovely confirmation that I’m doing something right and my fudge is maintaining a high standard and remaining very popular.

“I thoroughly enjoy what I do and that shows, I think, in the final product.

“I have met some amazing people because of this,” Ms Fleming said.

April Currie had further awards for her baking of cakes and puddings.

In the Sydney Fine Foods Awards, prior to Hobart, she received a Silver for her rich fruit pudding, another silver for her rich fruit cake and a bronze for her (vegan) chocolate and orange pudding.

“But Mansfield producers shone at the recent Royal Hobart fine food awards,” Ms Currie said.

“It is so exciting to be recognised across Australia, how good my fudge and sweet treats are.

“I knew they tasted good, but to be recognised and more importantly showcasing our products made right here in Mansfield Shire.

“I’m jut so proud of the produce we can make in this region and small business giving it a go.

“Both our results (for herself and Jeni Fleming) are sensational and were the best there,” Ms Currie said.

The Royal Hobarts Agricultural Society Fine Foods Awards event brings many judges from all over Australia (local and interstate), together to find our country’s best produce.

Established in 1995, the competition is one of the most respected and longest running food awards in Australia.

TOP FUDGE MAKER: Jeni Fleming has taken out one gold and six silver awards at the Tasmanian Fine Foods Awards - for the second year in a row.

Public holiday scramble AS most will hopefully know by now, Australians get a one-off public holiday on the national day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that Thursday, September 22 would be a holiday to coincide with a memorial service for the Queen.

“It will be a one-off national public holiday to allow people to pay their respects for the passing of Queen Elizabeth,” he said.

Mr Albanese said he had written to advise state and territory leaders of the holiday.

Victorians already have Friday, September 23 gazetted as a public holiday for the AFL grand final.

It was also announced that in Victoria, the Queen’s Birthday will now be known as the King’s Birthday and the public holiday will retain its traditional date of the second Monday in June each year.

It comes after King Charles III was declared as Australia’s new head of state last week.

The state government confirmed the change to the public holiday in a statement, saying no administrative action was required.

“The public holiday to mark the Sovereign’s birthday on the second Monday in June will now be known as the King’s Birthday.

“No administrative changes are required for this.”

Farmer wants a life jacket A MAINDAMPLE farm worker who appeared in court last week has been convicted of marine-related charges for operating an unregistered vessel, without a licence, while ferrying three children who weren’t wearing flotation devices.

The breaches of the marine safety act also landed the man a good behaviour bond and an order to pay $1000 to Kidsafe, a charitable organisation dedicated to the prevention of unintentional death and serious injury to children.

The accused, who was born and raised in Kyneton, had previously worked at a chair factory, a chicken farm, and racecourse stables, before being employed as a farm hand at Maindample where he’d been for five years.

Defence for the accused said he’d met with family on the day in question at a spot

on the banks of Lake Eildon, with the intention to fish and camp.

This was something he’d done “hundreds of times.”

His defence team told the court that he didn’t realise you needed a licence to operate a ‘tinny’ or that it had to be registered.

It was the accused’s sister’s children in the boat and they had life jackets in another vessel that was being repaired, the court heard.

Defence said that it was a sunny day, the boat was never more than twenty metres away from shoreline, and even though they ran out of fuel, necessitating they alight the vessel, the depth was sufficiently shallow that he could stand.

“Children can drown in less that 25cms of water,” said the magistrate.

Defence submitted that this was an isolated incident and wouldn’t happen again;

“You’re 26, probably not old enough to have the horrible thoughts I did.

“When I started reading this, I thought this could be

the start of a coroner’s brief,” concluded the magistrate, before convicting the accused, issuing a six month undertaking of good behaviour, and ordering a contribution of $1000 to Kidsafe.

The accused then said, “Not wanting to make matters worse for myself, but shouldn’t Fisheries donate $1000 too, considering the safety aspect?

“They watched it unfold in front of them all day and didn’t do anything to stop it.”

Mr Meadows responded that they were at Lake Eildon that day for another investigation and only came upon the accused’s offending by happenstance.

“I don’t need to hear anything further on the matter,” the magistrate concluded, dismissing the accused, who noticeably smirked while putting on his Akubra-style hat as he left the courtroom.

NORTH East-based state MP Tania Maxwell and other local organisations will stage a roundtable discussion this week to plan future advocacy for the establishment of a specialist family violence court and legal aid office in the North East.

Ms Maxwell, Hume Riverina Legal Service (HRCLS), and the Centre Against Violence say demand is so strong for family law services across communities where 140,000 people live that many are turned away or have to wait long periods for appointments.

“There’s no specialist family violence court or Victorian Legal Aid office in the whole region to help victims of family violence,” Ms Maxwell said.

“HRCLS - the only free legal service in the North East and southern NSW - describes this as ‘a serious injustice’.

“More than 80 per cent of its clients experience or are at risk of family violence.”

THE Goughs Bay Area Progress Association recently hosted and subsidised two events.

“The first event was a wonderful evening at Ros Ritchie Winery,” said Gail Hart, secretary of the Goughs Bay Area Progress Association.

“Ros provided great wine and food.

“Denis Tucker put on a superb show with many attendees hitting the dance floor.”

The second event was a dinner at the Curry Garden Restaurant.

“Mr Inamul Haq and his staff served up a terrific banquet,” said Gail.

“There was so much food and choices.

“No one went home hungry.”

The events were able to be subsidised from the CASI Quick Activation Grant that was received from Mansfield Shire Council.

Both events were well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended.

Teaching the kids at MPS

MANSFIELD Primary’s upcoming 150th birthday is as much a celebration of the school’s history, as it is recognition of all the staff and the school community who have made the school what it is today, a thriving, inclusive environment with a strong emphasis on respect - not only for self, but for others and the environment.

Cathy Johnstone has been a teacher at the school since 1994, participating twice over this period in a year-long teacher exchange program with a Canadian school.

When she first moved to the Shire she taught at St Mary’s for three years, moving to Jamieson Primary for a further two years, before settling at Mansfield Primary School (MPS), a commitment of around 31 years to educating young minds in the community.

Twenty six of those years have been at MPS, teaching not only a variety of year groups across the entire school, but also successive generations of Mansfield familie .

achievement that was nurtured through the School to Summit program which was introduced into the curriculum that year.

“I shared two grade 6 classes with another teacher, Lesley Dunlop, and that was the first year we completed the camp to the top of Mount Buller,” Ms Johnstone said.

“I thoroughly enjoyed teaching each one of those 48 students and they all have a very special place in my heart.”

This year will be Ms Johnstone’s final year at the school as she retires from the profession, with the school’s birthday celebrations serving as a fitting finale to her decades in the industry.

“When I began my teaching career, we were still using blackboards,” said Ms Johnstone.

“We didn’t even have whiteboards.

“Not like the computers and interactive whiteboards that are in the classrooms of today.

“We now use laptops every day, whereas previously there was a computer room and the students only used it once a week.

“We didn’t have air conditioning when I began working here, and in summer it was unbearably hot.

“The children didn’t wear uniforms for a few years when I first started.

“They were only introduced in 1996.

“I’ve also had the privilege of working under six different principals over my time at the school.”

One of Ms Johnstone’s favourite memories of her

teaching career is of a combined grade five and six camp which was held at Phillip Island.

“One warm, still late afternoon we were sitting on the beach at Cowes and all eightyish children were happily engaged in either fishing, making sandcastles or art creations with seaweed, dipping their feet in the water, or playing ball games,” she said.

“It was one of those moments you cherish.

“We also used to take the children to a camp in Melbourne and we had many interesting moments travelling on public transport.

“I especially remember the students’ reactions their faces and their quiet (or some not so quiet) comments about some of the outfits worn by the other commuters on the trains or trams.”

Along with the 150 year celebrations, Carol Watts will be recognising her own personal milestone, notching up 20 years teaching at the school.

Having previously worked at Jamieson Primary School, and before that Mitta Mitta, Eskdale and several small schools around Mildura, Mansfield Primary is one of the largest schools that Ms Watts has taught at, and she has watched it grow over the years.

When she first joined the staff body, the school had about 260 students enrolled, a number that has doubled during her tenure.

And classes that were once composite, have now become individual year groups as the school has expanded.

“There was much more space in the playground, which has since been occupied by new buildings and portables,” said Ms Watts.

“There was an amphitheatre where the current grade three classrooms are, and many of the older buildings have been replaced.

“Some subjects have changed.

“We have taught Indonesian and Auslan, and when I first started teaching here we didn’t have a physical education specialist teacher.

“We had to teach PE and also instruct swimming.

“Technology has also become much more prominent over the years, both for student use and teacher instruction.”

Ms Watts has her fair share of memorable teaching moments, from ski trips to sleepless nights on school camps to hiking adventures.

“However the very special moments are the small ones, when I see children encouraging and supporting one another and having a magical moment in their learning,” she said.

“I remember a child who competed in a team at the school triathlon.

“He could barely swim, and had never swum a lap of the pool.

“I walked alongside him ready to help him out when he could go no further.

“But he persisted, and completed the lap for his team.

“When the team finally crossed the finish line, the whole school erupted into the hugest applause recognising his courage and perseverance.

“Another particularly fond memory was from one of my grade two classes.

“There was a child whose work was unreadable.

“One day he showed me his writing and I read it back to him.

“His eyes lit up and his face beamed with the hugest smile as he said, ‘You can read it’.

“That was a moment that warmed my heart, and that is why I love teaching.”

Nor has Ms Watts love of teaching abated over the years.

“I enjoy teaching every year group,” she said.

“The junior school learn so much in a year.

“The middle years are so eager to learn and try hard to improve.

“The upper school can engage in more serious issues and make a real difference in the community.”

Retirement is not on the cards anytime soon for Ms Watts, and even when that day does approach, she hopes to maintain her connection with the school.

“You may well still see me around doing some work at the school, even in retirement,” said Ms Watts.

Maindample firetruck on the move thanks to community grant AS a recent recipient of a Community Bank Mansfield grant, the job of keeping the local community safe during the fire season and other emergencies has got easier for the Maindample CFA. Maindample RFB secretary, Ros Fauvel, praised the volunteer members who willingly give up their time to help the community in an emergency.

Ms Fauvel said Maindample responds to bushfires as well as urban fires, and serves as a backup for

Mansfield CFA Brigade if required.

“Our brigade is fortunate to have members who can make themselves available at all times of the day and night.”

“These members put aside their work or other commitments, put on their CFA gear and head out to protect our community,” she said.

The Maindample CFA has one tanker and one slip on.

“Unfortunately we had a limited number of people with the appropriate truck

license to drive our tanker,” Ms Fauvel explained.

This impacted on the brigade’s ability to respond to emergencies.

“Bendigo Bank came to our rescue and thanks to their generosity we were able to assist one more member to get his truck license,” she said.

Volunteer John Warne successfully attained his truck license recently and has increased the Maindample brigade’s ability to respond to more emergen-

cies, Ms Fauvel added.

Community Bank Mansfield & District Branch Manager Ryan Daykin said, “Whether it is attending call outs to fires, protecting local property or responding to road accidents, there are no doubt that these volunteers are part of the backbone to keeping our community safe.

“We are proud to provide this support to help train more members so that they may continue this important work.”

THERE are many husbands, wives, sons, daughters, friends across the Mansfield district who care for others.

But it has been recognised that these carers sometimes need a little tender care or ‘time out’ for themselves, so they are being offered free cinema tickets as a thank you.

The Parkinson’s Support Group received funding through the 2022 Community Bank & District Impact Program.

“Our aim is to show carers they are appreciated for their role in the community,” Ms Heron said.

“It is often a hard job looking after someone who cannot do everything for themselves, it can become very constant and tiring, so time out is necessary even for a short break,” she said.

Coming on board with this ‘time out’ project is also Beolite Village and Rosehaven, along with the community nurse, to help spread the word of cinema vouchers for local carers being available.

There are however a few eligibility requirements: * The carer needs to live within the Mansfield and district areas, * must have a valid carers card, or be a member of a Carer’s organisation, such as Parkinson’s Support Group.

The vouchers are available by phoning Jenny Heron on 0400 004 011 on or after September 21 and could be then picked up from the Bendigo Bank from October 1.

There are limited vouchers available in the first round, so it will be restricted to one voucher per carer and issued on ‘first come’ basis.

Three more rounds for ‘time out’ vouchers are expected to follow on December 1, 2022; March 1, 2023 and June 1, 2023.

Monthly report from Mansfield’s mayor

By MAYOR, CR JAMES TEHAN FIRSTLY, I would like to thank Bill Millard for all his work as acting chief executive officer over the last two months.

His experience and knowledge of the local government sector was invaluable.

It was great to hear his views and opinions and most pleasing was he thought the organisa-

tion generally was in good shape.

We now look forward to working with our new CEO Kirsten Alexander and her team.

COUNCIL updated and passed the Footpath Strategy 2022 in the August meeting.

This strategy was put out for public consultation, and the response was incredible, especially from our outlin-

ing townships of Jamieson, Bonnie Doon and Merton.

This strategy prioritises the footpaths, both upgrades and renewals, that the community most wants.

This strategy can be viewed on the council website and further responses are welcome any time.

The original plan was passed back in 2008 and was last changed in early 2020.

This amendment will see the number of lots increase by 10 to a total of 28.

These lots range in size from 350 to 960 mÂ2 which will give a variety of options to potential purchasers.

Council approved the amendment to the 140 Highton Lane (Highton Manor) Development Plan.

COUNCIL approves the refund of rates on the Community Centre at the Beolite Village for the last three years.

Council’s legal advice indicated that the Centre met the threshold for being classified as non-rateable and has responded accordingly.

Council very much appreciates the work and contribution that Beolite makes and gives to this community and will encourage and support its continued growth in the future.

MP urges locals to beware of scammers

Grants available for outlying towns in Shire GRANTS of up to $20,000 are now available to outlying communities within the Mansfield Shire to develop facilities that “enhance liveability and improve resilience and connectivity”.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, October 14 2022.

Incorporated not-for-profit and community groups are eligible to apply for funding from the $50,000 Outlying Communities Infrastructure Fund to complete projects that provide capital improvements to facilities or land that will benefit the community.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said Council recognised these projects bring long-term value and benefit to our outlying communities.

“The contribution of these funds provides a good foundation that communities can contribute and add value to, in order to deliver infrastructure and facilities that support their unique needs,” he said.

“We are fortunate that our community groups are so engaged and committed to improving their respective townships and localities.”

Projects must be located within the Shire, but outside of the Mansfield township.

The previous round of successful applications included the Tolmie Community social club,

our Governance Rules will now mean Council can continue to meet both in person and electronically.

The latter was only allowable under temporary measures during the pandemic.

These changes give the public enhanced accessibility to Council meetings by cutting out the need to travel and be able to view Council meetings from the comfort of their own homes.

PAST HELP: The Tolmie community social club are currently working on a redeveloped facility to host the social club and Tolmie Sports with previous grant money..

Merton campdraft and the Goughs Bay Area Progress Association.

The Tolmie Community Social club are currently rebuilding their existing offices to create a multipurpose facility.

The redeveloped facility will host the social club and Tolmie Sports.

All-weather facilities will be available for campers and local users of the Tolmie Recreation Reserve.

Linda Terry from the Tolmie Community said this grant was great for the community.

“The injection of the funding received enables our community club to continue in all seasons and conditions, ensuring we remain connected not only socially, but be

re-invigorated to volunteer, work and co-operate together post the pandemic,” she said.

As a result of funding received via the previous round, the Merton Campdraft Club are installing permanent steel livestock yards, a loading race and cut out pen at the Merton Recreation Reserve.

The yards and equipment will support campdrafting and other rural sporting events.

Gail Hart, representative of the Goughs Bay Area Progress Association, said that a 4x4 metre skillion roof would be installed at the newly developed Goughs Bay Recreation Reserve.

“This grant has provided an additional BBQ shelter in Goughs Bay for the community to

congregate and socialise as well as enhancing the recreation area for visitors and tourists,” she said.

Works are already in progress at Goughs’ Bay on the shelter site, with the concrete slab now in place, and are expected to be complete in the coming weeks.

Council encourages multiple applications from within the same community however successful applicants from the previous round cannot re-apply in this round.

NORTH East MP, Tim Mccurdy, is urging locals to be vigilant when signing up to unsolicited rebate schemes.

Mr Mccurdy said he is aware of an alarming trend of companies leaving locals high and dry in order to exploit one of the government’s various energy rebate schemes.

He said “dodgy companies” are offering to upgrade old hot water systems, and either do not show up, or take months to continue to the next step.

“This extends beyond hot water; the government has set these schemes up and as with most things the government handles, they have dropped the ball,” he said.

“I recently spoke in Parliament on a bill that was patching up on a big loophole that saw a Melbourne business left with 14 fridges on their door.

“It is clear that many companies are out to rort the system.”

Mr Mccurdy said these companies are almost impossible to get in contact with and are poorly regulated.

“Many of the companies that are approved providers do not have a shop front, and certainly not one in regional Victoria,” he said.

“I encourage everyone who is interested in taking up the rebate offer, to first talk to your local plumber or electrician, and see whether they are able to do the works for you.”

North East region visited twice during 70 year reign HER Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh visited the North East on two occasions, during their Royal visits to Australia in 1954 and 1988.

During the 1954 visit, from February 3 to April 1, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip made the journey by Royal train from Melbourne to Benalla Railway Station on Friday, March 5.

They were met on their arrival at the station at 10am by a large crowd of onlookers and local dignitaries, with 101 year old Miss Elizabeth Eustace of Wangaratta

receiving the Royal visitors, who then proceeded to their Royal black Rolls Royce and did a lap of the Benalla Showgrounds, where thousands of people welcomed them.

Students were bused from Mansfield and around the region and were among the crowd and one student reminisced waving her Australian flag as the completely open Royal car approached and she glimpsed “a very pretty young lady wearing a small hat and waving a white-gloved hand”, before the Royal car departed at 10.30am for Shepparton.

On their second visit, during their 1988 Royal tour to Australia - from April 19 to May 10 - Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip travelled

Tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II SADNESS has been felt by people across the region following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96, on Friday (3.30am AEST), with public tributes and those of distinguished leaders in our community.

Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign was the longest in the history of the British Royal Monarchy and her legacy continues to be acknowledged worldwide.

United Kingdom, the Church of England, the worldwide Anglican Communion and countless people of any or no political and religious persuasion across the world, we give thanks for the life and mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II,” Bishop Bester said.

“She has been a constant in our lives since she ascended the throne in 1952.

“As the Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England, she has not been just a figurehead, her faith has governed and directed her life.

“In her Christmas message in 2000 the Queen said, ‘For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life’.

“The Queen has left us a sterling example of service.”

Bishop Clarence quoted Archbishop Justin Welby who said on Friday, “In the late Queen’s life, we saw what it means to receive the gift of life we have been given by God and — through patient, humble, selfless service — share it as a gift to others”.

“May she rest in peace and rise in glory,” Bishop Bester said.

Queen Elizabeth II has been replaced by her son, King Charles III, who was next in line to the throne.

Accommodation conversation A PEAK industry body for Victorian tourism is calling for a limit on short-stay accommodation advertising to ease workforce shortages in regional Victoria, but others aren’t sure it will fix the region’s accommodation problems.

The Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) released its election priorities list last week, calling for a

“The impact this is having on regional communities is profound,” she said.

According to the VTIC’s fivepoint plan, New South Wales and Tasmania have regulations that treat shortterm accommodation as

cap on the number of days properties can be listed on short stay websites each year, and regulation requirements for commercial accommodation, similar to other states.

The VTIC doesn’t have specifications for the cap on advertising short-stay properties, but chief executive

commercial accommodation.

The plan also encourages local councils to intervene, pointing out that Queensland’s Noosa Council recently introduced a rate levy on short-stay properties in their jurisdiction.

Noosa Council recently introduced two levies on

short-term rental properties - one for properties that let for less than 90 consecutive days, and another for homes with short-term rented rooms but the owner still resides in the premises.

Meanwhile, a recent report from Airbnb said the hosting service is becoming

more popular in regional Australia, citing an increase in regional hosting and regional destination searches on the website.

According to the report, Australia recorded an increase of 60 per cent in non-urban nights booked on the service when comparing the second quarter of 2022 with the same period in 2019.

Labor enters Euroa race for state THOUGH Labor Party is yet to announce their nominee for the Eildon electorate, they recently confirmed their candidate for the Euroa electorate, announcing that their local schoolteacher Angela Tough will contest the Nationals-held seat in the November election.

Ms Tough, from Strathbogie, has been a teacher for 20 years and currently teaches at the Euroa Secondary College.

“I’ve been a teacher for 20 years, with English teaching being my major focus,” she said.

“I also have two little ones myself, a son and daughter aged nine and six who go to school locally.

“My husband is a farmer and works full time on the family farm.

“We’re a politically engaged family and we are constantly watching the news.

Having previously been an active member of Labor branches in Melbourne, Ms Tough feels the time is right to get back into the political arena.

“I was active in the Labor branches when I used to live in Melbourne,” she said.

“I helped work on campaigns many years ago.

“It got tougher to keep that up while living here, even branch meetings were hard to get to.

“But I live and breathe politics; it’s an important part of my life.

“I’m not afraid to stand up for issues and never have been.”

Ms Tough spoke about

the political sphere, even contesting the Indi preselection against Helen Haines ahead of the 2019 Federal Election.

“I stood with Helen Haines for pre-selection after Cathy stood down and just had the most amazing day,” she said.

“It came away from that not feeling like I lost, but instead had sparked a fire in myself.

“To meet all these beautiful, engaged people was really encouraging.

“I felt invigorated politically by seeing the grassroots action from these people.”

The state election is scheduled for November 26, 2022 and Ms Tough will be standing against Liberal candidate Brad Hearn and Nationals candidate Annabelle Cleeland.

A big but wet weekend JAMIESON ON THE LINE with Carmel Dixon

JAMIESON has been in celebratory mood for the last week.

Local resident Steve Lycett celebrated his birthday with his wife Jenny and local friends at the Brewery, he was delighted to receive a surprise birthday cake.

The muster organisers Greg Wilson and his two daughters Evlyn and Cindy were delighted with the first day events and the atmosphere with the drivers and the local residents as warm as ever.

Sunday morning saw the volunteers up early for breakfast preparation in the Memorial Hall at 8:00am.

The crowd enjoyed the hearty hot egg and bacon on toast, served by the fantastic selfless volunteers.

The atmosphere was joyous as the organisers had to make some difficult immediate decisions.

The rains were still falling and the pre-lunch activities had to be relocated.

The activities were relocated to the hall while the luncheon crew, the CFA cooks, prepared a BBQ in the Hall marquee.

The organisers held the prize awards while local entertainer Denis Tucker played for the crowd.

To hold such an event with fierce inclement weather was a commendable achievement.

Congratulations to all involved.

THERE will not be a service at St John the Apostle Catholic Church on Sunday, September 25th.

Henty field days showcasing best agriculture has to offer

SOUTHERN Australia’s single biggest agricultural event, the Henty Machinery Field Days, is back this week with all the latest technology plus added live entertainment for the family.

The agribusiness super event started on Monday and will showcase more than $158 million worth of agricultural machinery and products to the nation and the world.

HMFD chief executive officer Belinda Anderson said the program had been expanded this year with a country music spectacular with headline acts Brooke Mcclymont, Adam Eckersley and Danny Phegan performing on the Wednesday night.

Mrs Anderson said the new free event would be a separate ticketed concert on Wednesday from 5.30pm behind the Farm Gate pavilion, with entry tickets booked online on the HMFD website.

The free entertainment has been made possible by a grant submitted by Greater Hume Council to the NSW Government for the Reconnecting Regional NSW - Community Events Program.

“The field days will have all the usual attractions including the prestigious Henty Machine of the Year Award, the working sheep dog trials, Country Lifestyle pavilion, Farm Gate Produce Market, Baker Seeds agronomy trials, helicopter joy rides, live

entertainment, outdoor reptile show, the Natural Fibre Fashion Awards and vintage farm machinery display,” Mrs Anderson said.

“We expect the strong demand for all agricultural machinery, livestock handling equipment and fencing materials to continue through 2022 and, combined with the focus on regional Australia with the public’s keenness to get out and about, will auger well for a successful 2022 Henty Machinery Field Days.”

CFA firefighters raise funds, awareness

Wangaratta Show to return with a bang next month

STAIR CHALLENGE: Wangaratta CFA firefighter Damien French was among five local members to do the stair climb challenge.

PREPARATIONS are well under way for the 2022 Wangaratta Show, which will return on October 7 and 8, following two years impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

The 2020 and ‘21 shows were cancelled due to uncertainty around the pandemic - the first times the Wangaratta Show had been unable to be held since World War 2.

But organisers are excited about welcoming crowds back to the Wangaratta Showgrounds next month, and seeing locals and visitors alike enjoying the range of entertainment on offer.

The show’s popular fireworks display will again be part of the fun, and will decorate Wangaratta’s skies from about 8.30pm on the Friday night, signalling for many locals the event’s long-awaited return.

In the lead-up to the fireworks, show patrons will be entertained by family-

owned freestyle motocross act ALL4FMX, comprising Victorian brothers Mitch and Harry Van Vliet.

Due to a large number of enquiries last year, dog high jumping is back on the agenda at this year’s show, and will run from 6.30pm on the Friday on the Wangaratta Showgrounds arena.

The Swagzters musical group will perform on Friday and Saturday, as will Me’n’me Mates, a ‘beaut’ group focused on celebrating Australian songs and stories.

Another newcomer to the show is Hoopsparx, a hula hoop performer who will offer interactive ‘hoopy’ play spaces, and conduct roving performances around the venue, promising fitness, friendship, giggles and hula hoops.

Animals of Oz, a mobile wildlife education program, will be at the show on both days, giving audiences the chance to

get close to, interact with, and learn about many of the furry, feathery and scaly inhabitants of the Australian bush.

The show’s horse program has been altered again this year, with expectations of even larger numbers of horses at the event, while the all-breeds cattle show will offer a $500 cash prize for the supreme beef exhibit.

There will also be alpacas, a sheep show, pigeons and poultry.

The all-breeds dairy heifer show, which was well-supported in 2019, is on again on the Saturday, with some excellent prizes on offer.

In the pavilions, there are sections for all ages, encompassing cookery, jams, jellies and preserves, craft, needlework, art, photography, horticulture and fleece.

The salami competition was also well-supported in 2019, and will return with a

Saddling up for autism

FIFTY NINE registrations and $3360 raised to date is set to soar, as more riders Saddle Up for Autism in November, putting their time in the saddle to social good, raising funds for autism.

Mansfield Autism Statewide Services (MASS) CEO Simone Reeves explained that the Mansfield Rideathon 2022 raises funds for Mansfield Autism’s $50m Operation Gamechanger expansion on their new farm, that will be a centre-ofexcellence, therapeutic care farm.

A first for Australia, the farm will enable a massive increase in service provision to help meet the overwhelming demand for autism services and training.

“On top of the $16 million state and federal money already secured, Mansfield Autism is investing over $10 million into the farm expansion,” said Ms Reeves.

“Escalating costs of construction are adding to the bottom line on our existing stages, so every dollar counts and fundraising is a critical part of our increasing contribution.

“Our Mansfield Rideathon target is $100,000, double what we raised last year,” she said.

The Mansfield Rideathon encourages riders from anywhere in Australia to saddle up for autism in November and invite donations.

You can ride anytime, anywhere, on your own horse, a friend’s or sign up with a trail ride operator.

“Mansfield’s High Country has some of the best riding in the world and some of the finest operators and we encourage anyone looking to take part, to ride with any of our four trail riding businesses,” Ms Reeves said.

“If you’re not a rider, you can donate to support a rider or team, buy a Mansfield Rideathon cap or attend one of the special November events.”

‘Breakfast on the Lawn’ kicks off the High Country Festival on October 28, on the High Street median grass area opposite the post office.

The ‘Honor Ride’ will then depart from Delatite Winery around 11.30am to the new farm under construction on Ogilvies Road, atop the Hidden Trails by Horseback mountain horses.

The honor ride features special guests who have made significant contributions over the course of Mansfield Autism’s 50 plus year history.

Master Trainer Gerald Egan is guest speaker at ‘High Country Movie Night’ at the Mansfield Armchair Cinema November 15, with a special screening of ‘Ride Like A Girl’.

Egan trained Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye McNeil and many other winners of our biggest races.

‘High Country Ball’ is back to ‘dress

to impress with a twist of country’ on November 26.

Riddellvue Angus sale dips into the past and looks to the future RIDDELLVUE Angus is dipping into the past, looking to the future, and bringing the very best American genetics to its 2022 annual Spring Angus bull sale.

The on-property sale near Alexandra on Wednesday, October 5 will feature 30 18-month-old bulls and stud principal Ian Bates says buyers can expect a great draft of naturally reared bulls.

This year’s spring sale has been delayed by a month and Ian believes the deferral will be vindicated by the quality of bulls on offer.

“I’m pretty excited about the line-up; it’s a very even lot of bulls,” he said.

“We put the sale back a month because it was a tough season and it’s pretty hard to get bulls ready for a spring sale in our district “We came through the

winter pretty well, but I thought I’d give myself a month’s grace and give the bulls a bit more time, and it’s going to work.

“The bulls are looking great now and come sale day they will be even better.”

The catalogue will feature some older genetics coming back to the fore, including a couple of sons by LT Driven.

“I love the LT Ranch that does a really good job in the United States,” Ian said.

“I still had some of the semen, so I thought I’d give it a go and it has worked really well.”

Ian had previously travelled to the US five times to look at sires.

“There are pretty good ranches over there for sourcing cattle.

“It has been hard since COVID to get there but you

This year’s catalogue also features a line-up of exciting bulls sired by US sire Woodhill Blueprint from Wisconsin based stud, Woodhill Farms.

Blueprint was their topselling bull in the 2019 Sale and has produced a really great set of bulls at Riddellvue with volume and good type.

The 2021 sale set a new

stud record with an average price of $9071, and the upcoming sale will follow that success with more progeny of MOGCK Entice on offer.

“We had sons of Entice in the last sale and they sold very well.

“They are a similar-style bull to the Woodhill Blueprint sons and will be popular,” Ian said.

Among the 30 bulls on sale, Ian said there is strong stud potential in several of the sires.

He’s also investing in the

future, earlier this year buying the top-priced bull out of Reiland Angus’ autumn sale, Reiland Ricochet R952.

“I found him to be a very complete bull in structure and phenotype,” Ian said.

“He’s very well put together with an amazing set of numbers to go with him.”

Ian expects to see his first progeny for sale in a few years.

“We’re pretty excited about his prospects,” he added.

Ian is confident the industry is in good shape and demand will remain strong.

“There is a bit of scare around with foot and mouth disease which would be totally devastating if it came here, but putting that aside, bull sales have been on fire with averages up and high demand.

“I don’t think the concern about FMD will affect the bull market this season - the industry is still in a great spot and is really strong.”

Every bull on sale has been naturally reared.

“I don’t like to push my bulls too hard,” Ian said.

“I’d rather they grow naturally, and I just top them up a bit to get them to a sale weight with a bit of condition.

“Come October 5, things will be looking pretty good with a great lot of bulls with good temperament that are ready to work.”

The auction starts at Whanregarwen near Alexandra at 1pm and will also be online via AuctionsPlus.

Yarck CFA in need IF YOU have ever thought of joining the CFA, then the Yarck brigade would love to hear from anyone who wants to be part of a skilled and highly trained volunteer-based organisation that works to protect the lives and properties of millions of Victorians.

CFA volunteers undertake a range of operational tasks such as firefighting, road rescues, emergency medical response, as well as nonoperational roles including fundraising, marketing, community education, and engagement.

Yarck Captain Marty Shaw said the brigade is looking for new members to help fill some of those roles within the brigade.

“We’re keen to hear from anyone who is interested in serving their community and applying their skills and knowledge to CFA,” Captain Shaw said.

“Whether you want to jump on the truck and fight fires or wish to join the brigade in a nonoperational support role, we will find a role that suits you.”

Yarck has specialist response capability in firefighting and motor vehicle incidents.

“We often work closely with other emergency services agencies such as Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), Ambulance Victoria, VICSES, and Victoria Police, which helps us build great relationships with other members of

the emergency sector, and local community.”

Captain Shaw said joining the brigade is not only fantastic for skill development but is also a great venture for meeting new people.

“Many of our members have met some really close friends through the CFA,” he said.

“We regularly meet and train at the station, and welcome any new volunteers with open arms.”

LAST Wednesday, primary school students from the shire competed at District Athletics, with numerous students qualifying for Division.

All the top two place-getters in each discipline qualified, however with athletes only allowed to compete in two events and one relay at this higher level of competition, some third place-getters also made it into the line-up.

“A total of 65 St Mary’s students from grades three to six took part in District,” said Peter Coffey, the Sports and Outdoor Education teacher at St Mary’s.

“Of those, 35 have qualified to go on to the Division sports, to be held in Epping on Tuesday, October 4.”

Ten students from Mansfield’s Steiner school will be contesting different events at Division, with about 48 students from Mansfield Primary also competing at this next level.

Grand Final winter tennis

WITH Benalla and Mansfield Black finishing first and third place respectively on the Euroa & District Ladies Winter Assoc (EDLWTA) ladder, giving their all in the semi-finals held at Mansfield’s courts, it was Terip Terip and Euroa who were going to battle it out in the Grand Final on the hallowed courts of Euroa.

Long-time rivals and with fourth placed Euroa knocking off the top of the ladder, Benalla, this was going to be an interesting day.

Cindy Hayes led her merry ladies, Frances Lawrence, Bec Lyttle and Phoebe McDermid, out onto the court to fight it out against Chris Ellis, Sue Vaughan, Lyndall Bigland and Rowena Ellis.

Hayes and Lawrence took to the court against Chris Ellis and Vaughan, whilst next

door, Lyttle and McDermid were up against Bigland and Rowena Ellis.

Chris and Sue came out of the blocks firing, and raced to a 5-1 lead, leaving Cindy and Frances wondering what to do.

Slowly, slowly the Terip team found their rhythm and clawed back to take the set out 8-5.

Bec and Phoebe were not going to let Lyndall and Rowena get the jump on them and took their set 8-4.

Heading into the second round there was an even split with Terip and Euroa each taking a set, 8-3.

This meant Euroa was going to have to pull out all stops and take the last 2 sets in a convincing manner.

This was not the case, with Terip sealing the premiership with an 8-3 and 8-6 final round.

Despite the score line appearing one sided, this was not the case.

There were many great rallies, and plenty of ‘oohs and aahs’, followed by clapping from the spectators.

The weather was kind to the players, although the specta-

tors huddled together when the sun hid behind the clouds.

Rain threatened toward the end but fortunately didn’t eventuate.

Once the physical side of the day was over, everyone retired to the club house for a spread fit for a king.

President Deb Mims had to hush the chatter to congratulate everyone for the season and an extra special congratulations to the 2022 Premiers, Terip Terip.

With the formalities out of the way, everyone went back to chatting before farewelling, with the comment of, “see you next season on the court.”

There was even talk of catching up before then, as everyone enjoys the social side of the competition.

Bec from Terip commented that she looks forward to her Winter Mondays and can’t wait till next season.

Clay Target Club holds back-to-back shoots THE Mansfield Clay Target Club afternoon and night shoot was held on Saturday in calm drizzly conditions.

The evening attracted a field of 49 shooters making up 10 squads from all over including New South Wales CTC, Cloncurry Queensland and local club representatives from Boarder CTC, Alexandra, Yarrawonga, Numurkah, Shepparton, Corowa, Frankston, Woods Point, Melbourne and MCC. Everyone stayed overnight in Mansfield and re-attended the day shoot the following morning.

The events were generously sponsored by Angus Cameron (Ballistic and Mechanical Testing), Greg Coleman (Ridgeline Clothing), Paul Keedle (Mt Buller Towing), Terry Preston (SJS Trading) and the Kirley family (Mansfield Hunting and Fishing).

Saturday kicked off at 3pm with the Ballistic and Mechanical Testing 30 target Ball trap, 15 targets per ground.

Bill Preston was the overall and B grade winner hitting 29 targets.

Others included AA grade Phillip Matthews 28, Greg Coleman 27; A grade Terry Preston 28, Ian Cameron 26; B grade Lewis Chapman 24.

C grade required a shootoff between Adam Maltman

A hearty meal catered for

by Angus and his daughters Sarah and Silvia filled the gap between events while we waited for sunset.

Smoked kransky’s, pork snags and accompaniments supplied by Alpine Butchers were delicious.

A fill-in novelty event was well supported with all shooters standing at 25 meters, on lane four, with a miss and out, until one remained.

Fred Heinze took the cash.

At 6.30pm it was dark enough to shoot under lights so it was into the 60 target medley 20 double, 20 single and 20 point score, for maximum total score of 100.

Greg Coleman and Phillip Matthews came home with 95, after a shoot-off requir-

ing five of each targets they remained undecided with both on 23/25, in the spirit of the competition they shook hands and split the prize AA and overall prizes.

A grade went to Shane Wheeler on 92 and Marty McLachlan 91.

B grade Bill Preston 88 and John Winters 83. C grade Nevenka Muller 72 and Adam Multman 72.

The night ran smoothly and rounded up at 10.15pm.

On Sunday we woke to an overcast day with intermittent showers throughout.

Event three kicked off at 10.30am with the Ridge Line 30 target single barrel championship.

Daryl Hunt, Ian Cooksey and Bob Glossip participated in a shoot-off for overall after

hitting 29.

Daryl was victorious 34/35.

Ian won A grade 33/35 over Bob 29/31.

AA grade second was Angus Cameron 34/37.

B grade David Luelf 29/33 and Lawrence Apps 28/33.

C grade Jarryd Bringham 24/30 and Tom McGrath 22/33.

The next event was Mt Buller Towing 30 target Point Score.

Angus Cameron blitzed the field hitting 89 out of a possible 90.

Junior shooter Cameron Ford took AA second with 86/90.

Another junior shooter, Ben De Pedro took A grade 86 over Alan Kidd 88.

B grade David Luelf 84 and Lawrence Apps 82.

C grade Stephen Wilson 79 and Adam Maltman 78.

Rounding out the two days was event five, the Ballistic and Mechanical Testing Handicap.

Carson Weingott was the only shooter hitting 29 and taking home the $500 first prize.

The next three shooters battled it out for minor placings, the results being Greg Coleman second, Marty McLachlan third and Geoff Foster fourth.

Fifth place was a five way tie on 27with Adam Maltman victorious.

The two day five event tournament high gun was split by Greg Coleman and Phillip Matthews 261/280.

A grade Terry Preston 248/280, B grade Bill Preston 246/280, C grade Adam Maltman 218/280. Junior high gun Ben De Pedro 239/280.

Ladies high gun Jo-Anne Ford 215/280 and veteran high gun Bill Forrest 239/280.

Special thanks to attending shooters and family members who participated with scoring and generally helping out to ensure a successful day.

Co-ordinating the shoot and results Marty and John ran the office, and everyone chipped in and delivered a well ran back to back program.

ON Monday September 12, Mansfield Primary School held their first athletics in two years.

Year three to six students came to school dressed in their house colours.

They started off at the main oval where the ground was soaked.

Luckily the rain held off for the rest of the day, and the weather turned out great.

We started off the day by doing the 100-metre sprint, which was a lot of fun.

The kids then split off into age groups and rotated through five different events; hurdles, high jump, discus, shot put and the 200-metre race.

After lunch, we held relays for each age group to win points for their house.

It was a lot of fun and congratulations to everyone who participated.

The house winner for the athletics carnivals was Buller with 263 points.

On Wednesday 14, students who made it in the top five in each age group and event competed against other schools in the area.

We would like to say a big thanks to Miss Driessen for organising the day and making it happen for us.

We interviewed students and asked them how they liked the day.

Avah Shevlin from 4B said her favorite part of the day was shot put as well as doing the house chants, because every house got to do their own unique chant.

She was proud of herself, even though getting a ribbon didn’t matter to her.

Avah said that everyone did an awesome job because they just had a go.

She is looking forward to getting to do it again next year.

Lenny Gardiner from 6C said that he really enjoyed doing the 200-metre sprint.

He won three ribbons in the 200-metre, 800 metre and the triple jump.

He also loved doing the year sixes versus teachers relay with his friends.

Lenny said that Miss Driessen and the House Captains did a really good job organising the day.

Bombers go down in grand final

By NATHAN DE VRIES IN their maiden grand final for the O&K flag last Saturday, Bonnie Doon fell just short, losing to senior league premiers Benalla All Blacks by 35 points.

The two titans of the competitions battled it out in the wet and slippery conditions at the WJ Findlay Oval.

While the preceding reserves’ flag was played out in relative dry weather, almost from the second the umpire

tossed the ball up to get the first quarter of the seniors game underway, the heavens opened.

Screaming fans huddled under cover and umbrellas as they watch the Bombers kick away to an early lead, which Benalla brought back through the second quarter, the Panthers up by a point at half-time.

In between showers, Benalla’s slick ball movement allowed them to build momentum through the third

quarter, with their forward line finding goals thanks to great pressure.

Goals from Cody Crawford, Lachy Thompson and Riley Moran kept the Panthers’ faithful on their feet, as Bonnie Doon struggled to make any meaningful impact in their own forward line.

Repeat entries and shots on goal through the final term kept the momentum firmly going Benalla’s way,

with insane tackling pressure through the midfield thanks to the likes of Jackson Hourigan, who was named best on ground for his efforts in the midfield.

As the rain fell, the seconds counted down until the final siren signalled the end of the match, with Benalla All Blacks standing tall.

Final scores saw the Panthers raising the cup 8.12 (60) to the Bombers’ 5.5 (35).

Bonnie Doon coach Ken Murray said his side couldn’t hold out against the Benalla’s physicality.

“The boys are pretty gutted to be in the game for big chunks but we just ran out of legs, I suppose,” he said.

“We found ourselves with a few injuries accumulated by halfway through the third quarter, we had a few boys that were struggling to continue but you find a way and

you just have to continue.

“To the boys’ credit, they fought it out against a quality side, we just didn’t have enough run in the legs at the end, we probably didn’t have enough guys fit to go and ready to go in that last quarter when we thought we still could’ve built a bit of momentum.”

Campbell Smedley, Zak Bailey and Beau Smith were among the best for the 2022 runners up, with five players each slotting a goal for the Bombers.

Between 1750 and 1900 sports fans went through the gates at the WJ Findlay Oval over the course of the day, which started with the grand final breakfast, with guests of honour inducted into the

league hall of fame and others conferred life membership to the league.

The matches kicked off with the under 15 netball decider between Bonnie Doon and Whorouly, with both sides giving it everything they had on the wet courts.

The match was a phenomenal display of young talent, but the Bombers walked away with the cup 30-29.

The C grade, B reserve and B grade matches were

all contested by Milawa and Bonnie Doon, with Milawa taking out the C grade and B grade titles (52-45 and 50-42) and the Bombers pinching B reserve (48-45) - fans were treated to an exceptionally close C grade match, which had to be resolved in overtime.

O&K FNL general manager Cam green said the entire day was a massive success after two missed years.

“Obviously after two years

were a few hiccups, the broadcasts were very successful.

“We were battling the elements, we were battling internet coverage, battling the location of the camera itself,” Green said.

“The logistics on it were probably a little tough but to even have it is amazing.

“We’re always trying to improve and strive to be better, and we’ll look to try and go a little better next year.

“At the same time, there was good coverage for both football and netball - that might’ve been lost in the occasion but to have it all available for the public, for the people who couldn’t get there on a grim, dreary day was great.”

The league wished to thank everyone involved in helping the day and entire season run as successfully as it has, including sponsors, supporters and especially players and their families.

Mansfield Bowls Club hold their opening day

By LYN FOOTS SUNDAY saw the Bowling Club Opening Day with many members attending with the weather an unknown quantity.

With thanks to the Bendigo Bank, all members and their guests attended and enjoyed a free BBQ lunch before the official opening ceremony commenced.

The day commenced with a very special note to Queen Elizabeth II who was the Patron of Lawn Bowls throughout the Commonwealth.

A minaute’s silence was held in her honour.

A special presentation was made to our most resent recipient of the super veterans badge (AKA Over B 80) to Coral Taylor.

Congratulations Coral.

It is something that most of us hope to achieve.

With the god’s shining above us, we were able to have the official opening of the greens with Keith Millott and Elizabeth Christopher having the honour of putting the first jack and first bowl

down to start the season.

Keith and Elizabeth have been the driving force for many years for the indoor bowls and this honour was very much deserved.

For those that braved the incoming weather, the winners of the day were Chris Laws, Vicki Klein, Heather Ingpen and Howard James.

Thank you to all that did a mountain of work leading up on the day and on the day itself.

Many hands will always make light work.

It was splendid weather for ducks - was it suitable weather for Eagles?

The Mansfield girls were glad to be there, rain, hail or shine.

The regular line up presented; there were no injury concerns, although Sarah Anderson had been on pharmacy strength Codral during the week.

Leonie was loud and proud during the warm up and the Mansfield navy hoodies looked very classy and we all hoped that would transpire into the girl’s play for the day.

We started the proceedings from the centre circle and Isobel Anderson sunk the first goal.

Nerves were evident early on with a few overly hasty passes in the mid court but we knew the girls would soon settle.

Stacey Doig at WA had a mighty battle on her hands

with a fairly ferocious opponent, who smiled wickedly every time she was pulled up for obstruction or contact which was frequently.

Some great aerial work from Mich and Isobel along with some sneaky, sharp inter goalie passes kept the goals coming and kept us in touch.

Robbie was doing her thing with style in defence and the smallest of fingertips late in the quarter - one from Leonie and one from Robbie resulted in very handy turn overs.

Captain Cazz was covering plenty of court, running her guts out and adding pressure to the defensive end.

It was an even quarter but Echuca finished with their noses in front.

The quarter time score was 11-9.

The wind blew up a bit to usher in the second quarter.

Coach Mich was very nearly splattered in the early part of the quarter so it was a good move from her to wear her combat boots today.

She stayed on her feet despite the heavy clash and of course finished it off beautifully with a convincing goal.

This week it was Leonie who was dancing around the ball trying to avoid a ‘playing your own ball’ call while attempting to protect it from being scooped up by the opposition.

It was brilliantly done.

The Echuca GA was looking very dangerous in the late part of the quarter and extended their lead into the

to continue their frequent ground passes to each other.

In fact Echuca were feeling the pressure all over the court and to our amusement even resorted to some illegal footy tactics and kicked the ball out of play.

Isobel was back to starring under the ring although she did nearly affect a heart attack in this supporter when forced to make two remarkable rebounds for a normally easy to get goal.

But with the help of her fine leaping we clawed back to within one goal of Echuca.

Some further chaos in the defensive circle worked to

our advantage and a swift series of passes down the court found Jess under the ring all alone.

She made sure of the goal and with a bit of Mansfield magic the scores were even.

Annie Edwards was subbed on and her fresh legs and hard run contributed to our two goal lead at the three quarter time siren.

Light rain greeted the players onto the court for the final quarter.

Maybe it was the right weather for Eagles.

The Mansfield play in the beginning of the quarter was

strong and steady.

When Jess made a hopping rebound and snuck the ball to Isobel it put us three goals in front.

Sarah may need to invest in a new pair of shoes because she was slipping all over the place but still managed to effectively curb her strong opponent.

A menacing tip from Leonie in the middle resulted in another profitable turnover.

Yet Echuca played on with fierce determination and suddenly our lead was eroded.

When the ball belted Isobel on the noggin falconstyle, the supporters gasped and we all had to reset ourselves.

It was Robbie who put her cape on and was classy and heroic.

She forced goalers to miss who had previously not missed; she rebounded strongly and was instrumental in at least three turnovers.

The last minutes of the quarter were intense but our girls held their nerve.

Jess and Isobel continued to wrestle and win the best positions in the circle and Leonie and Mich were patient to pass in again and again.

It was pretty apparent close to the end that there was no way these gritty, determined and Grand Final aspiring Mansfield B Reserve girls were going to give up their lead.

The final siren sounded and the score was 45 - 42 and we were into a Grand Final.

Taki takes home the win

1st - Mic Davis 34 pts (h/c 10) 2nd - Fred Rogers 33 pts (h/c 25) 3rd - Malcolm Griffiths 31 pts C/B (h/c 18) ‘Mighty Mic’ has done it again; he is playing some really good golf at the moment.

A pleasing result for Fred Rogers, a former champion.

He left the golf track a prize winner, had some dinner and was then back for the dart night semi’s and playing an important role in his team winning 4:3.

Watch out for Malcolm Griffiths when the course dries out and he gets to use his long game.

He was one of four players with 31 pts, placing due to a

very strong back nine.

Thursday - Stableford - One division - 40 players.

1st - Taki Murakami 38 pts (h/c 11) 2nd - Guy Barbuto 35 pts C/B (h/c 8) 3rd - Rod Sargent 35 pts (h/c 1) Sodai (magnificent in Japanese) Taki 38 pts three shots clear of some other very good players.

Some rain approximately halfway through the afternoon did not detract.

Numbers really swelled due to carts being allowed for the day and the first round of the Premier League, which is eight teams of six players with the top three scores being counted.

Guy Barbuto is a person we do not see enough of, a low handicap, he always per-

forms well when here.

Did I hear ‘tree change’?

The Sarg, pennant captain, club champion, N/E champion and club V/Capt (pretty good credentials one would think) also 35 pts playing off one.

Three players were one shot behind and filled the minor placings.

Saturday Monthly medal has been moved to October 8; the first Sat and second round of the club Men’s championships.

Thus, a very big dual championship day for all our members.

Be prepared all, we will have 4/5/6 stroke rounds in a row.

I say, bring it on.

Nice to have 61 players compete in three days compared to a sad eight players all of last week.

A TRUE CHAMPION: Taki Murakami does it again, taking the win with a solid 38 points in Thursday’s stableford round.

Hayley comes fourth at ‘Wheels of Fortune’ FOLLOWING her success coming third at the Copenhagen Open and first in the Vans Show down in the USA, Hayley Wilson returned to Australia for a two week break.

She was then back to Portland Oregon to film with the Nike Team and then went onto Seattle, Washington to compete in the all-female ‘Wheels of Fortune’ competition.

Wheels of Fortune is the biggest all female skateboarding event in the world, attracting skateboarders of all ages and abilities from right across the globe.

In addition to the competition Hayley took part in workshops and team building programmes.

Hayley’s mum Catriona took Hayley to her first Wheels of Fortune when she was 14 years old and although Hayley did not make the finals back then it was her first international event which paved the way for her skateboarding career.

Hayley was thrilled to place fourth in this year’s competition just behind fellow Olympians Candy Jacobs (Netherlands), Keet Oldenbeuving (Netherlands) and Poe Pinson (USA).

Another highlight of the event was being awarded the ‘Best Trick’ of the competition with her signature big spin front board down the rail, which is a trick very few women have mastered.

During her time in the USA working with Nike she was selected to promote the new Nike Hi Top Bruin shoe.

Hayley’s next competition is Street League which takes place in Las Vegas in early October.

Premier League round robin begins

By LINDA TERRY WITH the championships out of the way, and with so many of our ladies also returned from their winter jaunts in warmer (but not necessarily drier) climates, it was lovely to all be back to our own golf and together this week.

There were lots of stories to share, laments about handicaps and golfing tales to tell.

On Tuesday the nine hole stableford round was a good way for some to ease their way back into things and eight ladies gave it a go.

With the conditions still pretty heavy after yet more rain, we won’t mention the scores, but the winner was Robyn Baker, followed by Glenis Skinner and Pam Abbott.

Meanwhile Gayle Wells and Linda Terry travelled to Chiltern for their annual bowl and enjoyed some fabulous hospitality from that tiny club (with just two lady members) and while both played quite well, they didn’t bring home any prizes.

Wednesday was the first round of our ladies Premier League, which is a team event run as a round robin over 10 weeks running up to Christmas.

Always one to get the competitive rivalry going it brought out 24 players.

There was quite some amusement too for those teams who hadn’t come up with a team name in time, and had to suffer the names our Captain Sheryl has appointed them.

First though, the daily comp.

We had enough for two divisions for the first time in a long while and Linda Terry took the win in Div 1 with 31 points, from Kylie Egan 30 and Sheryl Sargent 29.

In Div 2, the victor was Pauline Ahola with a nice 32 points, from Lesley Anderson 30 and Marion Foster 29.

Line balls went to Jenny Foster, Shelly Comerford, Linda Brook, Sam Bailey, Robyn Baker and Marion Mitchell.

Nearest the pins went to Jenny Foster (3rd), Kylie Egan (7th), Marion Foster (2nd to the 9th) and Sam Bailey (16th).

So to those Premier League teams; there were a couple of easy wins due to not all teams having all three players present, but hopefully there will be a full field next week.

The KLS Sloggers defeated the Nug Nugs by the slimmest of margins; The Happy Hookers defeated The Long Putters; The Wedgies had a close win by one over the Out of Towners; The Underdogs defeated the Spring Chics and the Ball Busters defeated the Tee Party who were a complete no show.

With 10 teams, we hope to have all 30 players doing their best to play each week now that we have kicked off our Premier League.

Eagles’ season ends with a swooping

THE Eagles seniors’ football side has bowed out of the GVL finals following a loss to the Euroa Magpies in the preliminary final last Sunday.

In a match that saw play stopped for half an hour as a crackling lightning storm rolled through Shepparton, it was the Magpies who ultimately struck against an Eagles side who just couldn’t hit their strides on the day.

Eagles seniors coach Chad Owens said the quarter time margin basically stayed the same throughout the rest of the game.

“We just didn’t get off to the start we wanted, they did, and we never really got going,” said Owens.

“We just couldn’t get out hands on the ball.

“From the start it was a weird day; lights on and a yellow footy, which I’ve never seen in a day final.

“But in the end, we just weren’t good enough for long enough.”

Owens said the Magpies struck either side of the thunderstorm break, which poured cold water on their chance to wrestle back some momentum.

“We coughed up a goal just before (the break) and another straight after,” he said.

“So effectively they scored

Best for the Eagles were Dirk Koenen, James Herridge, Jayden Howes, Patrick Marks, Lachie Christopher, and Corey Rich.

The Magpies best were Andrew Smith, Nate Trotter, Jack Hellier, and Harrison Jarvie.

They’ll go on to face Echuca in the grand final next week.

“The positives are we got a full season of footy in without any interruptions and finished in second spot,” said Owens.

“Unfortunately we didn’t have the finals series we were hoping for, but now’s a good chance to go back and have a look.

“We had a lot of young guys who got the experience of playing finals, got to see that intensity change when there’s more at stake.

“Hopefully they can use that as motivation, because it’s not a done deal getting into the finals; it’s bloody hard to do.”

The Eagles will hold their presentation night on October 8 and take a hard earned month or two off before looking ahead to the 2023 pre-season towards the end of the year.
