able to schedule in two clinics for the first week, however, as more of the Comirnaty (Pfizer) vaccine became available the hospital has been able to open up the calendar.

the COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic project manager, confirmed that the kids’ clinic will be operating on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 9am and 1pm, until the end of January.

Running three sessions a week, the clinic is able to vaccinate between 80 and 90 kids per session, with the service booked

out until the end of the month.

“We’re very pleased with the uptake and are optimistic that we will have a large percentage of the shire’s five to 11 year olds vaccinated by return to school,” said Ms Hood.

“We have recognised that we need to allocate extra time for children to be vaccinated.

“It’s incredibly important to create a supportive, friendly, safe and present environment for this age group, and so timeslots for each child are 12 minutes rather than the eight minutes for teens and adults.”

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the vaccination clinic receiving great feedback

in relation to the space and staff interaction with children.

The Mansfield District Hospital has worked hard to ensure the space is kidfriendly, with colourful posters and panels decorating the space, and a music soundtrack from recent Disney movie Encanto.

Another win for Mansfield emergency services

By JARRAH LOH THE Mansfield Emergency Precinct Committee (MEP) are delighted the Mansfield Shire Council supported the recommendations of the report - ‘Stage 1 Mansfield Emergency Services Precinct Scoping Study’, prepared by Planning for Communities at its December council meeting that supported the use of the old saleyards site for an emergency services precinct.

“Council considers the establishment of an emergency

services precinct a priority project,” said Mayor James Tehan.

“The study demonstrates that there is real benefit to co-locating emergency services such as SES, ambulance and potentially CFA in the long term, and council is pleased to support this community initiative.

“Council congratulates the Mansfield Emergency Services Precinct Committee for its leadership and vision, and looks forward to continuing to work with the committee to realise this exciting project.”

The MEP thanked Mansfield Shire chief executive officer Kaylene Conrick and general manager Kurt Heidecker, as well as the councillors for supporting the recommendation.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our emergency services and provide facilities that are fit for purpose to meet the demands of an ever-expanding shire and the increase in and complexities of emergency services,” said a spokesperson from MEP. “The process was a great example of the Mansfield Shire

working with its community and emergency services to achieve a positive outcome.

“We are now eagerly waiting to see if we are successful in obtaining funding from the Federal Government to undertake the final stages such as business case and design work.

“Again, our thanks to the Mansfield Shire for assisting in this process.”

On arrival children are given a show bag of items to ease any anxieties, with a colouring book and pencils keeping them occupied as they wait the required observation period after receiving their jab.

Wandering performers also engaged the children, with all staff addressing any concerns that parents and children may have regarding the vaccine and process.

“Performers from MMuDS kindly supported the opening week of the roll-out at our local hub, engaging and entertaining our young patients,” Ms Hood said.

“Of course there have been a couple of kids who weren’t too happy, however, we are dealing with something that is not generally considered a pleasant experience.”

Jake West, 11, had his first dose on Wednesday and said that though there was a slight feeling of discomfort on receiving the jab, he was completely fine after the vaccine.

His younger brother Leroy, 6, particularly enjoyed the lollipops dished out after his vaccination, and was keen to know when his next appointment was scheduled.

The Pfizer vaccine for five to 11 year olds is a smaller dose than for people aged 12 years and over.

In fact the dose is one third of the active component of the vaccine, with children given two doses, eight weeks apart.

Clinical trials have shown that the vaccine is effective in preventing COVID-19 in this age group, with children who had two doses, 91 per cent less likely to get sick from the virus than children who did not get the vaccine.

50 new tankers ready to roll

FIFTY new tankers will be rolled out to CFA fire brigades across Victoria in a boost that ensures volunteer firefighters are well equipped to protect their communities.

The new vehicles have been funded through the Victorian Government’s $126m CFA Capability Funding package, announced in June 2020.

The fleet of new dual-cab vehicles includes 48 heavy tankers and two light tankers, all of which replace single-cab tankers and allow a full crew to sit within the vehicle cabin.

Mansfield will be one of the first 20 stations to receive tankers by mid-2022, alongside Inglewood, Shoreham, Dunkeld, Buninyong, Gisborne, Poowong, Penshurst, Ballan, Wangaratta, Caroline

The full roll-out will be completed in 2023.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said tankers are a vital part of CFA’s fleet, with more than 1800 across the state.

“These new tankers are state-of-the-art firefighting vehicles,” said Mr Heffernan.

“The heavy tankers feature a 15-tonne crew-cab chassis with a 4000-litre water tank, while their 4x4 capability and automatic transmission will help crews access fires in difficult terrain.

“They also include fea-

tures such as electronic monitors and electric rewind hose reels, as well as using a higher percentage of recyclable build materials.”

The heavy tankers also have a 1200 l/min diesel engine-driven firefighting pump, crew/vehicle roll over and burn-over protection, and full equipment stowage cache.

Manufacturing on the 48 heavy tankers began in September 2021 at Sunshine North manufacturer RA Bell & Co, with the final vehicles expected to be complete in September 2023.

Construction on the two light tankers will commence at a later date.

Fond farewell to Fran

THE Mansfield Steiner School has been in the district for 35 years and has forged strong ties with students and families in the local community.

For the past couple of decades, principal Fran Cummins has been actively involved in the school’s development.

Her passion about the lifelong benefits of Steiner Education and its integration of the arts will remain, but this year she will retire and hand over the reins to a new principal who will take the school into its next stage of growth.

Started in Maindample in 1986, the Steiner school was established by two passionate teachers and was truly handbuilt, self-funded and independent.

In 1996 the school relocated to Mansfield, and that’s the year Fran joined the staff.

“It was exciting to be involved with the move to Mansfield,” she said.

“The school was initially very community driven, hands on with parents and teachers.

“It was originally a primary school with composite classes, which made managing the curriculum a bit of a juggle.

“Of course now we’re single streamed and we’ve gone from four teachers to having 43 on staff.”

Fran grew up in Mansfield, attending St Mary’s then the secondary college, then left to start

“It was a highlight discovering Steiner Education itself, finding another proven way that suited my teaching,” said Fran.

“To have a solid curriculum that valued the arts was a great relief, and it was also a great challenge as a teacher, striving to be a good role model and participating in the arts yourself.”

Fran’s kids went to the Steiner school and then onto Mansfield secondary thereafter, prior to the Steiner school’s growth into that area.

“First we added years seven and eight, which felt like a really big achievement,” said Fran.

The school followed with

plans to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) to year 11 and 12 students.

“Offering another option for education in Mansfield was the intent,” Fran said.

“We chose the IB so we weren’t competing with the secondary college.

“So many kids head off to boarding school, too, so it was nice to keep young people in Mansfield by giving them another option.”

The Steiner school has grown and continues to do so, but Fran says it’s been slow, steady growth, which is probably more sustainable than rapid development.

“We’ve got to this point, and it just feels like the right time for me,” said Fran.

“You know that feeling when the time is right, and now it’s time for someone to come in with new ideas to take the school to the next stage of growth and development while preserving the Steiner ideals.”

Looking back on her time at Mansfield Steiner, Fran recalled a number of fond memories.

“Our first camp to Central Australia, we drove a big group up the Oodnadatta track with a bus and trailer,” she said.

“It was a really exciting 17 days away; a couple of parents came and we went all the way to Alice Springs, around to all the major attractions.

“Another highlight was taking the year 10s to Slovenia for 10 weeks.

“The students were all billeted with Slovene families and attended the Ljubljana Waldorf School.

“While we were there we went on an art camp to Florence, a surveying camp to Croatia, and a music camp to Vienna; it was all amazing.”

Fran finishes up towards the end of January, after which she’ll have a lot more time on her hands.

“I’d like to do a few long walks, maybe some writing and travelling, maybe some other opportunities,” she said.

“It’s been a long career in education, and time for something different.”

The new principal at Mansfield Steiner School has been appointed and the announcement to the school community is pending.

For Fran, the enduring memory of her time at the school is just teaching itself, in particular the methodology Steiner has which sees teachers move up with their students over a number of years.

“It is such a privilege to take students for such a long time,” said Fran.

“You certainly get to know the students and their families really well through each stage of their development, over every speed hump and through the good times.

“When you come to the end of that journey and get feedback years later when they’re adults, that connection is amazing.”

MANSFIELD was warned that the district’s worst fire danger was yet to come after a busy week for the Country Fire Authority.

Several fires around the district and increasingly dry conditions prompted CFA officials to urge people to take extra care.

And the future of the Tolmie Sports came under threat.

North East arts groups merge TWO regional arts groups that have been fostering the arts in their local communities for years, have joined forces, with the aim of pooling their resources for the benefit of all.

The Goulburn and North East Arts Alliance Inc (GANEAA) and North East Artisans (NEA) are now one, having decided to amalgamate at the end of last year.

NEA voted for the amalgamation at a recent special general meeting - a decision confirmed

by GANEAA at their annual general meeting.

North East Artisans was formed in 2014; the not-for profit organisation operating as a cooperative model and providing support and space for local artists to practise including a gallery shop where they can showcase and sell their work.

The Goulburn and North East Arts Alliance Inc was formed in 1999 and is an organisation of volunteers who supports and advo-

cates for artists, while also hosting exhibitions and the biennial Across the Arts Forum, where renowned artists hold workshops in a wide variety of art forms.

GANEAA president Kathy Whelan said the groups were like-minded in their efforts to support regional artists and promote arts in the community.

She said members will come together under the GANEAA banner, simplifying administration, taking part in

joint exhibitions and events.

“We both want to add to the pride of our regional community and the richness of the arts that is here,” she said.

Ms Whelan said about half GANEAA members were already NEA members so there was already interaction and overlap between the two groups.

She said strong connections were also made when an Irish band was formed that included members from both groups.

‘Carny’ cops cannabis conviction

CIRCUS: A self-described ‘carny’ has been fined and convicted of charges relating to the cultivation of cannabis at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court last week.

A MARYSVILLE man and self-described ‘carny’ who grew up in the circus has been fined and convicted of charges relating to the cultivation of cannabis.

At Mansfield Magistrates’ Court last week, police prosecutors detailed the execution of a search warrant at the accused’s residential premises in March last year.

Upon searching the residence police located 10 large cannabis plants, each approximately 1.5 metres in height, in the back garden and chicken coop.

Dried cannabis stored in a container was also located in the garage.

The accused was interviewed, charged and released pending summons.

He made full admissions to cultivating cannabis, telling officers it was for personal use, and he regularly smoked it to help him relax and sleep.

Defence for the accused noted his relevant history of prior offending, which was said to be three pages long, and acknowledged he had been selfmedicating for some time.

His counsel further explained that the accused suffered from PTSD which stemmed from childhood events.

Defence said the accused believed he

had an enjoyable childhood, but it was transient and displaced, as his family were circus members which meant he and his siblings travelled a lot.

They further alleged that the accused had been molested at the age of nine by a babysitter’s son.

This allegedly occurred for a number of years and was known about but not discussed within the family.

The accused’s counsel noted that he just accepted it and thought it didn’t effect him, until he was around 30 years of age, and with the maturity he’d gained understood it had likely impacted his mental health.

Defence further detailed the accused’s hardships, including losing his wife in 2007 to multiple sclerosis, and losing his family home in the bushfires.

They requested the magistrate consider a corrections order to tackle the underlying issues he was suffering.

DON’T SHOOT: MP Bill Tilley is calling for an end to the State Government’s brumby shooting in the Alpine National Park.

MP says brumby carnage is not based on numbers NORTH East-based Liberal state MP Bill Tilley is calling for an end to the State Government’s “slaughterfest” of brumbies in the Alpine National Park.

He said visitors to the Eastern Alps reported 40 horses were shot in one location in mid December, while others say horses are being shot and covered with branches to hide the evidence, while deer and pigs are left in the open and uncovered.

Mr Tilley has questioned the basis for aerial and ground shooting of horses in the High Country, noting the government’s recently released “Protection of the Alpine National Park: Feral

Horse Action Plan” doesn’t quantify the number of brumbies left following the 2020 bushfires.

“In May the minister wrote to me saying that an aerial survey was part of the process that Parks Victoria would use in its brumby management plan and yet there is no reference to that survey or current numbers in the latest piece of propaganda,” he said.

“The plan admits the mortality rate from those fires remains unknown but quotes figures from previous versions that have been hotly disputed.

“Yet now they are shooting horses from helicopters

and chasing the wounded down to shoot them again, still with no guarantee the horse is dead when it hits the ground.”

Mr Tilley said Parks Victoria and environmental experts agree that eradication is impossible, so long-term management strategies must be put into place.

“The quick fix of kill and walk away is not accepted by the community,” he said.

“I say let’s allow the traditional roping and mustering and let’s manage the brumbies.

“It’s more humane and less costly than shooting from a helicopter and then chasing the wounded to shoot them again.”

New Year prostate cancer fundraising challenge set PROSTATE Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) is calling on the local community to set themselves a New Year’s challenge and join the PCFA-Team in 2022 to help save lives.

The PCFA-Team encourages people to sign up for a fundraising challenge and be part of a national team of change-makers committed to funding research and support services for men and their families impacted by prostate cancer.

Those that join can create their own challenge or register to hold a golf day, barbecue or blue-themed event, shave their hair, take part in a fitness challenge or even host a party fundraiser.

ficer Anne Savage said joining the PCFA-Team was one easy action to take in 2022 to create change in the community.

Driving offences dominate court MANSFIELD Magistrates’ Court was back in session last week, with driving offences dominating the year’s first sitting day.

A male driver was fined $600 without conviction for speeding and failing to keep left.

In July last year, a female witness reported travelling along Maroondah Highway towards Bonnie Doon when she was overtaken on double white lines near Almond Road by two vehicles at a high rate of speed.

The second vehicle, a red Toyota sedan, was then seen by the witness at a service station in Bonnie Doon.

At this point the witness confronted the accused driver about their speed and overtaking, to which the accused reportedly responded that it was “his life and he’d drive how he liked”.

Police were contacted and later clocked the accused driving at 120kmph on the Mount Buller Road.

They intercepted and the accused denied travelling at that speed, stated he was doing 100kmph and denied the earlier incident at Bonnie Doon.

Appearing in court via Webex, the accused elaborated, noting the witness had been travelling 20 kilometres below the speed limit when he overtook and had stuck her middle finger up at him, and

The presiding magistrate noted that regardless of what transpired, he’d admitted and pleaded guilty to overtaking on double lines, and that he simply couldn’t drive how he liked and against the road rules; double lines are there for a reason because they impede the vision of oncoming traffic for overtaking vehicles.

He fined the man $600 without conviction.

In another case a nurse had

her licence suspended for three months after she was clocked speeding at 90kmph in a 60 zone at Yarck.

In February last year, the female accused had pulled over to get something to eat before she exited the service lane near the Giddy Goat.

After accelerating at a fast rate, police radar measured her vehicle travelling at 91kmph, and she was subsequently issued an infringement notice.

She had a good driving history and accepted the prosecution summary in her plea of guilty and requested leniency in sentencing with respect to keeping her licence.

The magistrate acknowledged her work throughout the pandemic, but noted that he had no discretion in the matter when it came to the

suspension of her licence; parliamentary law dictating this mandatory minimum couldn’t be overruled and she would have to lose her licence for three months.

The magistrate did, however, delay the start of the suspension until midnight to allow her to drive home from work.

A young Tocumwal man fared better while facing charges of driving on the wrong side of the road in April last year.

Police were conducting a

patrol on their motorcycles when they rounded a bend on the Woods Point-Jamieson Road and almost collided with the red Land Rover being driven by the accused.

One officer took evasive action to avoid the collision while the other intercepted the vehicle.

The accused, who was a probationary driver, said that he was not used to the road and hadn’t driven it before when reasoning why he had rounded the bend on the wrong side.

This section of road was described as a gravel carriageway with single lanes in both directions and no centreline.

The accused appeared in court in person and reiterated the difficulty of the road, noting that keeping his licence was particularly important to his livelihood as he worked in the automotive industry.

The magistrate impressed the potential seriousness of what could have happened to either him or the officers, but noted that the accused had presented himself and pleaded guilty.

He imposed a 12 month undertaking of good behaviour, with no loss of licence or conviction, adding that he hoped the accused learned from the incident and became a better driver.

Lasting effect of lockdowns on Victorians

UNKNOWN IMPACT: COVID lockdowns have hit regional Victorians’ mental health, including children.

A MAJOR new study looking at the impact of last year’s COVID-19 outbreaks on the mental health of Australian families shows Victorian parents and children experienced a significant peak in symptoms during that state’s extended lockdown, compared to the rest of Australia.

The study, which involved more than 2000 families, proved to be a rare natural experiment as Victoria battled higher infection rates and longer lockdowns than the rest of the country.

Dr Westrupp said findings from the study, which is the world’s most intensive study of parents and children during the pandemic, have been made available to the public via an online interactive app for readers.

“The data shows the considerable burden of the pandemic on Australian families, particularly those living in Victoria,” Dr Westrupp said.

“Victoria experienced one of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world.

“This allowed us to see a clear difference in what was happening in Victoria compared to other parts of Australia, which were much less affected by COVID-19.”

For the study, parents of children aged from newborn to 18 years were followed 14 times over 14 months, from April 2020 to May 2021.

Dr Westrupp said the findings showed families most vulnerable to experiencing mental health problems included: 1. Mothers were particularly at risk of a deterioration in their mental health during the COVID-19 outbreaks and lockdowns.

2. High levels of loneliness in parents and children, pre-existing mental health problems or high levels of couple conflict, led to worsening mental health trajectories over time.

3. Financial strains (such as low income, food shortages, and job losses) and poor-quality housing placed families at increased risk of mental health problems.

4. Parents who reported feeling stressed or worried about the pandemic were more likely to experience mental health problems.

“The unexpected deterioration of parent and child symptoms in March to May this year may represent increasing public uncertainty or weariness with the pandemic and associated social restrictions,” Dr Westrupp said.

“These findings tell us we need to more actively monitor mental health and ensure good ongoing access to mental health supports and services even when pandemic impacts appear to be easing.”

Pavers to be revealed AS part of the centenary celebrations for the Tolmie Mechanics Institute which were due in July 2020, a new pathway leading to the hall was planned.

Locals and those with a historic connection with Tolmie were invited to purchase a paver which would be inscribed with their name and laid in the path to create a historic record of Tolmie residents.

Thanks to COVID restrictions, planned celebrations for the centenary were unable to take place and the production of the pavers had several delays.

However, the delays allowed more people to take up the opportunity to have their name permanently remembered in Tolmie, and 85 pavers have now been laid.

The project has been designed such that further batches of pavers can be added over the years so this historical record can be continued.

The unveiling will take place on Sunday at 3:30pm, and the committee of management has invited local identity Val Kirley to perform the task.

Val’s grandfather James Stewart first officially opened the hall on July 2, 1920, so this seemed a fitting link to the hall’s historic past.

All are welcome to the unveiling, which will be followed by coffee and cake, and then anyone who would like to socialise some more are invited to wander down and have a drink with locals at the Tolmie Community Social Club.

Analysis of the nation’s coronial findings in Australia’s Overdose Annual Report 2021 reveals combinations of substances - rather than one drug, or even drug type alone - are responsible for the majority of fatal overdoses in Australia.

Drug-induced deaths first surpassed the road toll nationally in 2014, and since that time have consistently and clearly outstripped both car and general land transport (including farm machinery) accidents as a major cause of death, par-

ticularly among 30-49 year olds.

In 2019 alone, Australia lost at least 2227 people to preventable overdose.

At least 1664 of these deaths were unintentional.

“Overdose deaths can be linked to the wider issues of health and wellbeing, quality of life index, including economic security, housing stability, access to services, and generational trauma,” said Ms Demasi.

Ms Demasi encourages anybody who is struggling to reach out to somebody who will understand, and stresses that it’s okay to need a hand and seek professional support.

“You are not alone,” she said.

On an immediate level, Ms Demasi believes that the practice of ‘gratitude’ can help overcome and even enjoy the ups and downs of the festive season.

“Gratitude can be experienced as a feeling of appreciation towards someone that has helped you,” she said.

“When you notice and appreciate the positive things in life like a cool breeze on a scorching hot day, your abilities in the kitchen or as a good friend.

“There is a lot of research now that links those who practice regular gratitude

to have positive impacts in their lives.

“From an increased sense of well-being, life satisfaction and positive emotional function, to increased optimism, sense of connectedness and improved relationships, and right down to better quality sleep.”

Ms Demasi suggests a good place to start is recognising, appreciating and acknowledging small actions people do every day that might be overlooked.

“Go for a walk and make a special effort to appreciate your surroundings,” she said.

“Spend a few minutes focusing on each sense from

sight to hearing, taste, smell and touch.

“And keeping a daily journal also helps.

“Take note of three things you are grateful for and how you influenced these things.”

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL B A RISE in local COVID-19 cases has prompted Mansfield neighbour Euroa Health to close its urgent care hospital so staff can be realigned to aged care, to support the residents.

COVID-19 case numbers have been rising in the past weeks with more people being able to travel in and out of the Strathbogie Shire to see their families over Christmas and New Year, with cases in the hundreds.

Euroa’s aged care facility GraniteHill has also been impacted by rising cases, as an individual with COVID-19 positive status identified as having worked at Euroa Health, which led to Euroa Health activating their COVID-19 protocols immediately.

Many staff returned from annual leave, worked extra shifts and the Euroa Health chief ex-

ecutive Hunter ti offi fficer Cherree Ch H t commended her staff for their dedication to their patients and residents at Euroa Health through this time.

She also recognised that over the past few days in the heat, and staff wearing full personal protection equipment, it has been tiring and stressful, and acknowledged the support shown from their patients and resident families throughout this time.

Mrs Hunter said the facility would continue to work under the requirements from the Department of Health, the Commonwealth, and the Public Health Unit.

“Until such time as they provide clearance, we are unable to open the facility to visitors or admissions,” she said.

“Euroa Health has not been immune to the long delays in obtaining results from our

PCR ttests t experienced i d statewide, our staff, resident and patient test results are taking up to six days to return, which hinders any plans to reopen the facility.”

At this time Euroa Health has also taken the unprecedented step to temporarily close the acute hospital.

According to Mrs Hunter, due to the significant furloughing of their registered nursing staff members, the Department of Health has provided to the organisation two registered nurses who have been deployed to assist during this time.

Many local businesses have also supported Euroa Health with deliveries of goods and services requested by Euroa Health at short notice.

Mrs Hunter said Strathbogie Shire quickly acted to provide 66 rubbish bins to assist with the disposal of personal protective equipment.

minister COVID-19 vaccines, while hopefully also freeing up health professionals to return to their normal duties.

The expanded force will join nurse and pharmacist immunisers in state-run vaccination clinics for up to six months and will be supervised by experienced clinicians.

The new vaccinators will be operating in well-established public health servicerun sites, with promised robust processes in place to ensure the new workforce is appropriately trained, supervised and supported.

Known as Limited Scope COVID-19 Vaccinators, they will be required to successfully complete mandatory Commonwealth and Victorian COVID-19 vaccination training - equivalent to training requirements for other emergency authorised COVID-19 vaccination workforces.

They will also complete a COVID-19 Clinical Skills and Competencies Assessment

to ensure they can perform their duties appropriately.

They will not be responsible for establishing patient consent and will be authorised to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to people over the age of 18 years only.

The vaccinators will also be supported and supervised by a ‘supervising authorised immuniser’ provided by health services, with relevant skills and experience in the technical aspects of vaccination.

Over the next few months Victorians with appropriate knowledge, skills and experience will be encouraged to join the COVID-19 vaccinator workforce as required.

Victorians with experience working in a health or community service setting, or who are enrolled in a health-related course, are desired - and they should regularly review local health service job advertisements and Department of Health jobs and careers websites.

North East regional crime watch Shooting accused sees matters postponed A MYRTLEFORD man who allegedly shot a man at a Wangaratta residence late last year has had his committal into the County Court postponed.

The 26-year-old was arrested by Armed Crime Squad members on October 28, after a 40-year-old man attended Northeast Health Wangaratta with a suspected gunshot wound on October 22.

Appearing at Wangaratta Magistrates Court last week, the accused was remanded in custody to reappear for committal mention on March 3, and is yet to apply for bail.

He is facing charges including armed robbery, intentionally cause injury, reckless conduct endangering life, theft of motor vehicle, prohibited person possess firearm, possess drug of dependence and traffic drug of dependence.

Greta shooter to await fate in court A MAN accused of discharging stolen firearms during a standoff with police at Greta West is set to return for committal mention later this year.

The 38-year-old Craigieburn man faces up to 22 charges after the May 25 incident last year, which saw him allegedly fire three shots at police officers at a McMonigle Lane property during an almost three hour stare down.

No police were injured in the standoff, retreating as the man allegedly brandished a Scott 12 gauge shotgun and a CZ .22 rifle, both of which are believed to have been stolen in Craigieburn earlier that day.

The accused faced court last week, appearing via video link from custody at Marngoneet Correctional Centre, when it was established he would return for committal into the County Court on March 3.

Defence counsel Sally Vardy did not lodge a bail

application, with her client expected to see a forensic psychologist on February 2 ahead of the matter returning before the courts.

Ute stolen from Markwood found in Euroa POLICE have recovered a vehicle reported stolen from Markwood over the weekend.

Acting Sergeant Jimmy McGinn of Wangaratta police said the owner of the new Holden Maloo ute reported it stolen overnight Friday/Saturday morning.

“With the help of social media the ute was located, safe, in Euroa,” Act Sgt McGinn said.

“Police are continuing to investigate the matter.”

Trafficking accused to contest charges A LACEBY man scheduled to enter the County Court next month has pleaded

not guilty to extensive drug trafficking and possession charges.

The man was arrested in October at a Snow Road property, when police located approximately 362 grams of heroin, 14 grams of cocaine, 28 grams of methylamphetamine, 117 grams of amphetamine and 50 grams of ecstasy in a safe in the accused’s kitchen.

Some $6300 in cash was also located at the time of the accused’s arrest.

The accused, who was denied bail on December 16, pleaded not guilty to 13 charges, consisting of trafficking, possession and deal in the proceeds of crime.

Police had previously alleged the accused had used his employment in the equine industry during periods of extended lockdown to travel freely throughout the state to traffic drugs, although defence counsel had maintained the accused was holding the narcotics for an associate.

The matter is set to

proceed to a County Court directions hearing on February 16.

Another male who was also arrested on October 6 at the Snow Road property is set to face Wangaratta Magistrates Court on January 24 on drug trafficking charges, but the alleged matters are not believed to be linked.

Taminick drink driver wined and fined A DRINK driver will remain without his driver’s licence for much of 2022, after blowing more than three times over the legal limit in July last year.

The 65-year-old Taminick man was intercepted northbound on Tone Road on the evening of July 20, providing a breath test reading of 0.175 after being conveyed to Wangaratta Police Station for an evidentiary reading.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Sarah Williamson told the

Wangaratta Magistrates Court last week that the defendant had admitted to consuming approximately 700ml of red wine throughout the afternoon, but informed intercepting police he could handle his alcohol quite well.

Defence counsel Geoff Clancy said his client had begun counselling shortly after his interception, following a sobering conversation with his wife when he identified his alcohol problem.

According to Mr Clancy, his client had abstained from alcohol since October, and had maintained regular engagement with Gateway Health in the ensuing months.

Magistrate David Faram did not see fit to exceed the minimum mandatory licence suspension, imposing a 17 month cancellation from the July incident.

He also convicted and fined the man a total of $750.

VICTORIAN firefighters are urging smokers to adapt their smoking habits in 2022, after responding to more than 200 house fires sparked by smoking materials last year.

According to Fire Rescue Victoria, lit and improperly discarded cigarettes contributed significantly to at least seven deaths in preventable house fires in 2020-21.

Acting Fire Rescue commissioner Gavin Freeman said multiple fatalities had been the result of individuals falling asleep with lit cigarettes.

“Time and again, Victorian firefighters find themselves at house fires sparked by smoking materials, which are much more likely to turn deadly,” he said.

“I urge all smokers, their friends and families to take some basic fire safety precautions to prevent more tragic deaths from occurring - if you or anyone you know is at risk, please make some changes now before it is too late.”

Smoking while in bed or while affected by alcohol or other drugs also dramatically increased the risk of dying in a house fire, according to CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan.

“Beds, couches and other soft furnishings are highly flammable, so if you fall asleep with a lit cigarette on these surfaces you could have just seconds to escape,” he said.

“Quitting smoking is the safest option from both a health and fire safety per-

spective, but if that isn’t possible then firefighters recommend smoking outdoors.

“Make sure you butt out your cigarettes and ensure they are fully extinguished before putting them in the bin, as rubbish and plants can and do ignite due to improperly discarded cigarettes.

“Furthermore, smoking materials frequently cause bush and grassfires, so I urge all smokers to take the time to fully extinguish their cigarettes this summer.

“It is also very important that lighters and matches are kept well away from children, as it is not uncommon for young children to accidentally spark major house fires with lighters and matches.”

Mt Buller prescribes a mountain escape this summer

MT BULLER is offering a ‘booster shot’ of fresh air and good vibes this summer - just what the doctor ordered for everyone who’s overdue for an escape to the mountains.

Project making sense of smoke impact on grapes

By ANITA McPHERSON A PROJECT involving the installation of sensors in vineyards which will help grape growers make early decisions about their crop after smoke impact, is set to ramp up in the New Year.

The new smoke taint detecting sensors, developed by a team headed by La Trobe University Professor Ian Porter, will allow growers to gather real time data from a site which can accessed at any time via an app on their phone.

A total of 100 sensors will roll out to sites across North East wine regions in two tranches next year, with the first 40 expected to be in place by the end of January and the remaining 60

by April.

Dr Porter said the sensors will log data for a risk assessment app, which is also being developed in the project, with the aim of having them up and running fully by the next season.

He said this season will be about validating the operation of the sensors and ensuring growers become familiar with the risk rating thresholds they will transmit during any controlled burns or bushfires that occur.

“The science behind this has been researched over six years so we’ve tried to get every aspect of a very complex area covered, whether it is different levels of smoke dose, grape and wine diagnostics, mitigation practices and sensory levels,” he said.

“We’re confident now that we’ve got the relationship between all those factors and risks very well covered, which is critical for something like this.”

“A grower will be able to make a call in real time, any time.”

SMOKE PLUME: The new smoke taint detecting sensors have been tested in the field and will be a valuable warning system, helping local growers make an early decision on whether to pick their fruit.

PHOTO: Ian Porter Using what is believed to be world-first technology, the app operates with a traffic light type of warning system, so when there is smoke in the air, a grower can get a clear indication of how it may be affecting their crop.

A ‘green’ reading will indicate there is nothing to be concerned about, an ‘orange’ may point to the potential of needing to take action (if the smoke remains), while a ‘red’ means the first level of mitigation may be required to offset potential taint.

Dr Porter said it is a risk tool to be used in conjunction with all aspects of science known about for dealing with smoke taint.

But he is confident in its ac-

curacy, saying it will reduce the need for multiple, expensive analytical tests and inform production decisions.

“The early warning system is incredibly valuable because you can make an early decision on whether to pick fruit or not,” he said.

“In a major bushfire, it will mean you can make a decision on whether to invest 25 per cent of your input costs (incurred between a smoke event and harvest) on expenses such as spraying for disease and the labour required to pick.

“So you could minimise the financial cost of these events by making a decision early.”

North East region in particular are already well informed and familiar with working with smoke.

He said this tool will make them more informed during the controlled burn season, particularly coming to the fore during bushfire events when it is “make or break”.

“They may not use it much during the year, but when a bushfire happens, that’s when they will really look at it and want to know what’s going on that’s when it will be really useful,” he said.

“It will tell you straight away whether to worry or not.”

“We have utilized information used for the warning system on a massive number of controlled burns and a large number of bushfires over the last six years, and we wouldn’t have been comfortable rolling it out until we’d done that.”

The sensor’s development has been funded through grants received by the North East Wine Zone (NEWZ) representing the Alpine Valley, King Valley, Glenrowan, Beechworth and Rutherglen wine regions.

It includes an $870,000 federal government Regional Economic Stimulus and Resilience grant received by Wines of the King Valley, following the 2020/2021 bushfires, with co-investment by La Trobe University and Wine Australia.

Those bushfires alone are estimated to have cost the North East wine industry more than $140 million in losses.

Dr Porter said the sensors cost in the region of $1000 each, making them an affordable tool for wine businesses in any smoke affected or bushfire prone regions.

Urgent change needed to ease supply chain pressures THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) says both the Federal and Victorian governments must fast-track the supply of rapid antigen tests (RAT) and ease isolation requirements for our essential supply chain workforce.

VFF president Emma Germano said the enormous rise of COVID-19 cases in Victoria and the subsequent isolation of an increasing number of workers is mounting pressure on our critical supply chains.

“We’re clearly experiencing a huge escalation in COVID-19 cases throughout the community, meaning a rising amount of people are subject to isolation requirements,” she said.

“The less workers there are to maintain our supply chains, the more vulnerable it becomes, and this directly threatens our food security.

“Farmers can’t provide the food and fibre needed to feed the country without the means to transport it via our essential supply chains.

“Our access to the inputs needed to operate is also severely impacted.

“We warned both the Federal and Victorian governments in October last year of this very scenario and to see this eventuate months later is incredibly frustrating.”

Ms Germano said there needs to be an urgent rethink of quarantine rules and a fast-track of RATs for supply chain workers to ensure capacity.

“To help safeguard our essential supply chains, asymptomatic workers deemed close contacts of COVID-19 cases must have their isolation period reduced, much in the same way as healthcare workers,” she said.

“Workers need to have a reliable access of a RAT and decision makers must prioritise this.

“Regional Victoria and our agriculture industry have been a resilient driver of our economy throughout this pandemic and it’s high-time that the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and the government listened.

“Time is ticking, we need action, leadership and guidance now.”

New specialist women’s mental health service for region NORTH EAST women experiencing complex mental illness and psychological distress will soon have access to better and safer treatment and care, under a new public and private health partnership.

Through the new state-wide Specialist Women’s Mental Health Service, five acute mental health beds specifically for consumers who identify as women, will be established at Shepparton Private Hospital through a unique partnership model between GV Health, Ramsay Health Care and Alfred Health.

These beds will allow additional care, support and treatment for public patients who would otherwise be treated in a public inpatient mental health unit, helping to ease the pressure on the public system and improve access and outcomes for consumers.

Now is the time to target rabbits AGRICULTURE Victoria and the Victorian Rabbit Action Network is encouraging landowners to get together with their neighbours to plan a rabbit control program, with summer and early autumn the best time to reduce local rabbit populations.

Agriculture Victoria biosecurity manager Jason Wishart said the best rabbit control results are achieved when landowners work together and implement management programs when rabbit populations are at their lowest.

“With food scarcer over the summer period, there is a natural pause in the breeding cycle, so the time to act is now,” he said.

Mr Wishart said control

techniques such as baiting and ripping also become more effective at this time of year because the rabbits are more likely to eat bait and the soils are more friable and better for ripping.

“While there are a number of biological control agents in the environment such as myxomatosis and RHDV (calicivirus), they are not effective for managing rabbit populations on their own,” he said.

“The most effective programs are those that adopt the ‘rabbit recipe’ which is an integrated approach using a combination of baiting, ripping and fumigation.

“It is also critical to monitor rabbit numbers before

and after your program to confirm that you are having the desired impact on the rabbit population.”

Rabbits cause considerable damage to agriculture as they consume pasture and various crops and compete with livestock for feed.

This, coupled with their burrowing behaviour, also leads to soil erosion and other land degradation issues.

Rabbits also have a significant impact on the natural environment through selective grazing, competition with native species and habitat degradation.

Visitors aplenty in Jamieson for the summer break JAMIESON ON THE LINE

was this week occupied by Emily and Simon with their two children Henry and Abi, who hail from Canberra.

Emily’s grandparents owned the property for many years, so holidays at Jamieson were frequently enjoyed as the family grew.

Emily and Simon are residing in Canberra and with COVID-19 restrictions and border closures, they have not been able to travel to Jamieson for some years.

The Jamieson River has been the highlight over the warm summer days for swimming and relaxing.

AUSTRALIA DAY: Aussie Day in Jamieson is always a great community event.

The CFA have withdrawn the fabulous sausage sizzle due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The show will go on and Mansfield Shire mayor James Tehan will attend and Genevieve Bolwell will lead the singing of the Australian national anthem, Advance Australia Fair, with the Bolwell singers and the attendees.

Popular local poet and writer Val Kirley will recite some original works of poems of local people and the area.

The event will commence at 11:30am on Wednesday, January 26 at the Jamieson river end of Perkins Street.

The attendees will be

seated at the reserve on the riverbank.

THE Jamieson CFA brigade attended a car fire at a property near Jamieson in Glen Avenue off Waterson Road.

A car had smoke coming from underneath the vehicle - while it was being driven grass had become attached to the hot undercarriage and had started smoking.

Fortunately the smoke subsided after it was completely doused with water and the site was declared safe.

LOCAL potter and artisan Dianna Kilford will recommence her Jamieson Pottery classes next week.

Dianna has produced wonderful pottery pieces with many displayed at the Gallery on Nash.

Players ‘absolutely love’ Langer: Cummins PAT Cummins is keen to have clarity on Justin Langer’s contract status beyond this summer’s Ashes, insisting Australia’s Test side “absolutely love” their coach.

The future of Langer, who comes off contract in mid2022 and has made it clear he is keen to continue, remains an unresolved talking point.

Langer came under intense pressure to keep his job last year, when Cummins and other on-field leaders delivered forthright feed-

back about dressing-room disgruntlement.

The former Test opener changed his ways, adopting more of a low-key role as Australia went on to win the Twenty20 World Cup and retain the urn.

But there remains speculation Cricket Australia (CA) will opt to move Langer on.

Cummins, asked about Langer after Australia claimed an unassailable 3-0 lead in their five-Test series against England, bluntly re-

plied that “his contract is up for renewal in a few months and we’ll deal with that then”.

The Test skipper struck a more diplomatic note in Hobart, speaking after his fourwicket haul helped Australia claim a first-innings lead of 115 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test.

“That’s above my pay grade. We’ll wait and see, it’d be nice to have clarity for everyone,” Cummins said.

“But he’s been doing a fantastic job, we absolutely love JL.

“He’s been really great through the World Cup and the Ashes. Honestly, it’s not been a talking point at all within the camp.

“The plan has always been to chat about it after the Ashes, so the powers that be, I’m sure, will chat at some stage.

“But he’s been fantastic for us and the boys love having him around.”

CA chief executive Nick Hockley and high-performance boss Ben Oliver are yet to set a definitive timeline

around the call on Langer, likewise a final decision on potentially splitting the role by installing separate whiteball and red-ball mentors.

But the growing expectation is the elephant in the room will be addressed soon after the Ashes series finale.

Oliver noted last month that CA will take player feedback on board before resolving Langer’s future.

Former captain Steve Waugh, who worked under Langer as a consultant dur-

ing the 2019 Ashes, offered strong support for his former teammate on social media.

“Position in doubt? Influenced the culture and character of the team after the Cape Town debacle,” Waugh posted on Instagram.

“Coached the team to a winning World Cup 20/20 and now to a commanding Ashes victory.

“Time to put the rumours and innuendo to rest. #respect #culture #character.”

Aslan Karatsev dashes Murray’s title hopes ANDY Murray has missed out on his first title in three years as clinical Russian Aslan Karatsev took out the Sydney Tennis Classic title on Saturday night.

A surprise semi-finalist at last year’s Australian Open after entering the tournament as a qualifier, Karatsev went on to be one of the big improvers of 2021.

And he’s taken that form into 2022, handing Murray a sound 6-3 6-3 beating on Ken Rosewall Arena.

The top seed in Sydney, who will jump to a careerhigh No.15 when the rankings are updated,

Karatsev bested Murray with three breaks across the two sets to take his third title.

With blistering returns reminiscent of Andre Agassi in his pomp, Karatsev stamped his intentions immediately by breaking the serve of three-time grand slam champion Murray in the first game.

He repeated the dose in the ninth game to take the set.

With Karatsev then breaking Murray to take a 2-0 lead in the second, the Brit looked up against it until the fifth game when he had five opportunities to bring

the match back on serve.

But Karatsev held firm, maintaining his advantage to eventually seal the trophy on his third match point.

Still, it was a solid tournament for Murray, who is in his twilight years on tour after major hip surgery.

Currently ranked No.135 in the world, he is projected to rise to No.113 off the back of his Sydney performance.

Murray will take on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Australian Open first round, having beaten the Georgian world No.23 in a tight threesetter in Sydney earlier this week.

AUSTRALIA’S Diamonds have made a striking statement of intent as they bid to regain their global netball domination, crushing world champions New Zealand 53-39 in their opening match of the Quad Series in London.

The Diamonds lost their crown to the Silver Ferns in Liverpool by a single goal back in 2019 and were also defeated 3-1 in the Constellation Cup trans-Tasman series last year, with suggestions there was now a new order in the game.

But with coach Stacey Marinkovich adamant the 11-times world champs are out to “dominate at big events again”, the No.1 ranked Diamonds delivered an outstanding victory on Saturday.

There was no sign of rust at the Copper Box Arena at the start of Commonwealth Games year among a team starved of international competition, having played only four times - all against NZ - in the last couple of years.

“Delighted with that. We come from a strong history of success and we’ve got to start contributing to that - and make sure we started taking those steps forward where we contribute to that legacy of the Diamonds,” said Marinkovich.

They were inspired by a player of the match contribution from wing defence Ash Brazill, the multi-talented Collingwood AFLW midfielder whose nonstop energy and drive around the court to snuff out numerous New Zealand attacks was a stand-out.

“It’s so nice to be back in the green and gold,” said Brazill, making her first appearance since 2019 after injury woes “We’re a very new group so I think we started strong and continued that through the whole game. It’s good to see what we’ve been working on works.”

Having a strong Diamonds team back in business was good for the sport, reckoned Brazill.

“It’s what the netball community needs,” she said.

“In Australia, there’s so many young girls who can’t play netball at the moment because of COVID. I’m sure it’s the same around the world, so it’s so nice for everyone around to see the Diamonds back on court.”

The teams had previously met eight times on neutral British soil, with three points or less separating the sides on each occasion, so the extent of the Diamonds’ mastery was a surprise.

Mills steps up for Nets as Durant injured BOOMERS captain Patty Mills has stepped up for the Brooklyn Nets once again after the NBA’s leading scorer Kevin Durant was forced off court with a knee injury.

Mills scored 21 points while James Harden led the way with 27 points, 15 assists and eight rebounds as the Nets overcame the loss of superstar Durant to beat the New Orleans Pelicans 120-105 in New York on Saturday night.

The Nets will be sweating on the results of scans on Durant’s left knee on Sunday after what was

initially diagnosed as a sprain.

He was hurt with 5:44 left in the second quarter when New Orleans forward Herbert Jones was driving down the court and crashed into Nets backup guard Bruce Brown, who fell backward into Durant.

Durant briefly limped around the court before asking to be taken out of the game.

As he has often in his first season with the Nets, Mills stepped into the scoring breach when needed and delivered for his team, who sit third in

the eastern conference.

With Kyrie Irving ineligible for home games because he’s not vaccinated for COVID-19, Mills has played big minutes, often as a starter alongside Durant, and he’s averaging over 13 points a game this season - the most in his 13-season NBA career.

He and Durant were back in the lineup after sitting out a loss to Oklahoma City on Thursday night to rest on the second night of a back-to-back.

Eagles soar in double header

By MAX LES CLAIMING wins over longtime Mansfield sporting rivals Wangaratta and Myrtleford, the weekend of January 8 was a strong showing from the Eagles in their first home appearance.

After a slow start to their inaugural season with five straight losses, the Eagles came back from the Christmas break with something to prove.

The first match of the double-header was to be played against Myrtleford, who in the previous round had capitalised on Mansfield’s poor

shooting performance to secure a six point victory.

After the loss of starting big man Flynn Shepherd early to a cut eye, Luke Murray came up huge with an 18 point 13 rebound performance, leading an effort in which all 10 Eagles hit the scoreboard to turn the previous six point deficit into a 17 point win.

Sunday saw the Eagles take the court against the Wangaratta Warriors, who in their previous meeting had blown out the game by 35 points.

In a hard-fought match from start to finish, emo-

tions were running high and this was reflected in the officiating, with both teams picking up some technical fouls.

Heading into the fourth quarter down by 6 points, late-game heroics from Sasha Spoa and Patrick Mahoney brought about a 63-60 victory for the Eagles.

Sasha was a standout in this game, posting a near quadruple-double with 9 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 7 steals; through his stifling defence and offensive poise he brought leadership and composure to the floor.

A historic weekend for Mansfield basketball, it was great to see so much community support through spectator attendance and all those from the association who gave up their time to volunteer and ensure that everything ran smoothly.

Summer golfing on the quiet side

By LINDA TERRY THE heat and humidity plus holiday times are currently knocking our numbers around a bit with no one taking on the course for nine holes on Tuesday or Thursday.

On Wednesday, some were still missing in action, but 21 ladies ventured out in beautiful conditions and Sam Bailey was the outstanding winner of the day and Division 1 with a great round of 40 points.

Hot on her heels though was Kylie Egan in Division 1 with 39 points.

In Division 2, the winner was Susan Kinloch with 35 on a countback from Lesley Anderson.

Line balls went to Marg Knapp 38, Linda Brook 37, Sue Crow 35, Pam Abbott and Millie Cumming 32, and Lorraine Cullen 30.

Nearest the pins went to Sam on both the third and ninth, Patsy Smiles on 12, Pam Abbott on 16 and Sam had the nearest third shot on 18.

Saturday saw only eight playing, but ladies captain Sheryl Sargent (15) continued her good form to win the stroke round with a very nice nett 72 from runner up Marion Foster (35) with nett 73.

Best of the line balls were Jackie Smithwick nett 74 and Milllie Cumming 76.

Millie also had the nearest the pin on 3.

Next week should see numbers getting back to normal and it won’t be long before we are honing our skills for the pennant season.

Anthony made a great start to the day on the Champion ski run, winning the qualification round and then advancing to the super final in fourth place.

In the super final, Anthony put down another great run to

score 80.38 points to land on the podium in second place.

Anthony is currently ranked third in the women’s moguls World Cup standings, and first in the overall mogul World Cup standings, which also includes results from the dual mogul discipline.

“I am really happy with how this event has gone, I really progressed in certain aspects of my skiing and

jumping in my four days here and I couldn’t have asked for much more,” said the 23-year-old Mount Buller product.

“It’s been a big month so far with four competition starts in two weeks, which is quite a lot for us, but you have to just keep focusing on what’s next and take it one day at a time.

“The women’s mogul field is so exciting to watch this season,

there are so many strong skiers and the women’s jumping has gone through the roof.

“I just love watching and I think it’s so exiting for the sport, and I can’t wait to see what everyone brings for the rest of the season.

“We are now off to Ruka, Finland, for our pre-Olympic camp, so I will be looking to fine tune bits and pieces of my run there and getting everything dialled in.”

Bowling’s B1s clinch victory

By LYN FOOTS LAST weekend saw the O&M pennant resuming for 2022 and saw all three sides playing at home.

The Mansfield A2 side were up against Wodonga and after a hard day at the office, Wodonga were far too strong taking the win 91 shots to 68.

Ray Robinson, Greg Nugent, Rick Nichols and Mike Harrison started well until Wodonga began to find some touch; after some great

bowling the visitors blitzed the last five ends to take the win 22 shots to 14.

George Peterson, Elaine Peterson, Chris Laws and Marian Ryan had a close game early and were holding their own until the fourteenth end when Wodonga took control of the game winning 23 shots to 14.

Peter Roberts, Lyn Foots, Ray Close and Mark Bettany had a slow start but began to pick up their game.

Both sides fought hard

and the game finished in a fitting draw 22 shots apiece.

The final rink of John Foots, Noel Jackson, Alex Clarke and Sid Revell began well, but again Wodonga took control as the match wore on and won 24 shots to 16.

Sports club person of the month nomination successfully risen from the ashes this year - with thanks in no small part to Cummins’ efforts - and have notched up convincing wins and strong support.

“I was a bit overwhelmed with the support we’ve been getting since sending out a few text messages about the club coming back, particularly from folks in Mansfield, it’s been fantastic,” said Cummins.

MERTON Cricket Club’s Bernie Cummins is this month’s sports club person of the year nomination.

Seldom do clubs rise from the ashes, something Bernie Cummins was well aware of when the long term president of Merton Cricket Club sparked things up at the beginning of this season after having their application to the Wangaratta association approved.

After Merton took home the B Grade premiership in 2017, all went quiet.

But Cummins continued working away in the background, ensuring the facilities

at the club, including wellappointed clubrooms and newly laid turf in the nets and on the pitch, were improved and maintained.

Cummins, who’s spent most of his life in the Bonnie Doon/Merton area, spent many years farming, shearing and fencing before he was taken along to an AGM by club stalwart Rohan Berriman and came away the club’s president.

“I don’t think I did anything the first year, then I got into the swing of it,” recalled Cummins when speaking with the Courier late last year.

The B2s took on Mulwala on the back green but the visitors were too strong on the day taking the win 61 shots to 47.

Nick Klein, Vicki Klein, Paula Crawford-Hall and Glenda Revell began well.

Mulwala found their range and levelled the game

and went onto take a narrow win 18 shots 16.

Pam Zierk-Mahoney, Collen Christopher, Ian Morley and Doug Morley had a steady start until Mulwala stepped it up and took a convincing win 26 shots to 12.

The final rink of Carolyn Close, Lyn Holland, Chris Edward and Anne Wileman began slowly but picked up their game to take a great win 19 shots to17.

The B2s remain in sixth position on the ladder with a bye this weekend.

Campitelli was the cowinner of the 2021 Ovens and King League Best and Fairest award.

Throughout a season tainted with uncertainty, Campitelli was rewarded with the Clyde Baker Medal for showing up week in week out and turning in a string of standout performances.

He appeared genuinely surprised upon hearing his name declared the winner at the O&K awards night

last November.

“I just want to thank the league, thank the Bonnie Doon club,” said Campitelli.

“Thanks everyone, and thanks Mum who’s probably watching.

“I’m feeling pretty shellshocked, to be honest.

“We had a good year; I know we all played well as a team.”

Campitelli, while happy for the individual accolade, noted the team had a great year, finished strong, but were unable to play finals due to the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing pandemic.

The Bombers had a cracking season last year, finishing in clear second place, with 11 wins and two losses and a strong percentage of 138.79.

They were in an excellent position to contend in finals footy following a year where the team clearly gelled and produced great results, so it was bittersweet news when the season was brought to an abrupt end.

ON TARGET: The annual Champion of Champions shoot was held at the Mansfield Clay Target Club last Sunday.

Champion of Champions shoot at clay target club THE monthly Mansfield Clay Target Club shoot was held on Sunday in sunny calm conditions.

Nine squads were made up from 44 competitors and the events were the annual Champion of Champions which was followed by a 20 Pair Double Rise Championship.

Competitors came from far and wide including club representatives from Alexandra, Benalla, Euroa, Wangaratta, Woods Point, Corowa, Melbourne, Yarrawonga and Numurkah.

The day kicked off with a 10 target Point Score eye-opener cash divide with the money in AA grade going to junior shooter Cameron Ford of Corowa on 30/30.

A Grade was split between local Phillip Desmond and Tom McGrath

of Alexandra 27/30, B Grade was a three way tie between Woods Point representatives Chuck Lay, Kirsten Chinn and Mansfield local David Luelf on 30/30.

C Grade by himself was Mansfield member Callum Harris 27/30.

This led into the big competition of the day, Champion of Champions, being a mixed bag of targets over three disciplines totalled for a single overall result.

All three events were shot off 18 metres.

The first challenge was a 25 target double barrel shot off layout one immediately followed by the next stage on layout 2, 25 target single barrel.

B grade was a three way tie 113/125 requiring a 50 points shootoff to determine the winner as Ryan Logan (Numurkah) 47/50 over Carson Weingott (Mansfield) 46/50.

Callum Harris made another appearance winning C grade 102/125, second was Grant Bethune (Central Wimmera CTC) on 99/125.

Overall a great day was had by all with shooters and family members all participating to ensure a smoothly run day of competition with everyone chipping in with scoring, refereeing and generally helping out to deliver a smoothly run program.

MERTON cricket club hosted Gapsted at the weekend with both clubs keen for a win with the first game in the new year.

Merton batting first made a competitive 5/184 lead by openers Ross Mackinon 88 and Daryl King 35.

Jarrod Cummins with 18 no and Luke Benton 16 pushed the run rate along nicely.

Gapsted definitely came to play and at times looked to have the game under control, however, Merton’s bowlers worked hard under pressure and stood up in a tight situation lead by Rohan Berriman with 4/37 and an inspiring spell from Ross Mackinon 2/32.

A challenging game went down to the last over, Merton coming out the victors by 12 runs with Gapsted all out 173.

Luke Benton and Jarrod Cummins were the other wicket takers.

Merton travel to Rutherglen next Saturday.

By ROHAN BERRIMAN DELATITE under 14 cricketers travelled to Wangaratta to take on the Magpies and came home with a big win.

Delatite batting first made 7/125 with James Benton 31, Harry Craddock 25, and Henry Berriman 17 the top scorers.

The Magpies were never in the game with early wickets

from Benton and Hoskin putting the home side under pressure and eventually all out for 65 in the 15th over.

MANSFIELD’S Delatite Cricket Club First XI travelled to Benalla to take on Benalla Bushrangers Cricket Club in round 9 of the WDCA A-grade competition.

Batting first upon winning the toss, Delatite started in the worst possible manner, losing its first four batsmen with the score on one.

With rain during the week and overnight, the under-prepared wicket was playing all sorts of tricks, tailor-made for wily veteran Dale Stratton who completed an incredible spell of 6 overs, four maidens, 2/2.

Skipper Chris Anderson dug in to see off 36 balls, however, was out for six, attempting to lift the scoring rate but skying the ball.

Adam and Harry Mahoney steadied the ship with a fighting 45 run seventh-wicket partnership, before the former was out also skying a catch.

He top-scored with 30 runs while Harry contributed a valuable 23.

Extras (12) were the third-highest contributor to the meagre tally of 79.

Delatite’s bowling attack is its strength, and openers Lachy Scales and Max Sampson set the tone, taking a Benalla scalp each in the third and sixth overs respectively.

They later snared a further wicket apiece to finish with two-for each.

Mitch Purcell bowled a very economical seven over spell, capturing 1/9.

Joel Sanford’s leg-spin bamboozled the batters, and he also collected two wickets.

With wickets falling at regular intervals, the visitors were in the game, however, a spirited innings from Craig Williams kept Delatite at bay.
