A WEEK FULL OF DRAMA MMuDS’ (Mansfield Musical & Dramatic Society) youth summer drama camp took place last week with 32 young people and five trainers working on two scripts by an Australian playwright over 10 action-packed days. The project included full accommodation, meals, transport and professional drama training at the Mansfield Performing Arts Centre. Tourism booming THE visitation to our local tourist hotspots this year over the Christmas-New Year period has resulted in local businesses reporting up to six times their average turnover for the same time in previous years. A local hospitality business reported a record 1447 meals prepared/served in a day. The Victorian state government recently said new research reveals the state continues to rebound strongly. According to Tourism Re-
search Australia’s National Visitor Survey (NVS) and International Visit Survey (IVS) in the year ending September 2022, total tourism spend in Victoria has returned to 84 per cent of the pre-pandemic level, with visitors back to 78 per cent of the pre-pandemic activity. Regional Victoria continues to deliver strong results, with domestic overnight spend up by 35 per cent at $9.6 billion, representing a significant increase from $7.1 billion in the year ending September 2019.
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos said, “From securing new aviation routes to attracting some of the best major international events and delivering them to destinations across the state, we’re ensuring the industry is well positioned to continue this incredible growth. Following this, Mansfield Council said it is time to make progress on a sustainable tourism plan to ensure the community benefits from it, while also retaining the shire’s
amenity and natural beauty. Mayor James Tehan said, “Every Victorian local government region is currently looking to enhance their offering for visitation and it has never been more important for Mansfield to stay with the game and ensure that we keep what we all love about living in Mansfield Shire. “Sustainable tourism considers the current and future economic, social and environmental impacts and addresses the needs of visitors, the industry, the environ-
ment and the community. “This plan will provide council with a better understanding of the expectations of our community, which is why it will be developed in collaboration with them.” Council’s acting senior coordinator for community and economic development, Clare Berghofer said, “This project benefits us by strengthening our visitor economy. “Services enjoyed by local people, such as restaurants, attractions, arts and entertainment will all benefit.
“Looking at it from another way, actions directly aimed at making somewhere a better place to live and work will also make it a more appealing place to visit.” The plan will also enable council to leverage its resources by establishing priorities, allocating resources in a more efficient way and providing direction on which type of development to attract.
