Boat explosion on Lake Eildon

A BOAT fire amidst holiday fun at Lake Eildon has left four children injured, with emergency services continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Emergency services were called to the fire in Eildon last Wednesday just after 6pm, with two Eildon Country Fire Authority (CFA) units and the CFA fire

boat dispatched to the scene at Jerusalem Creek Road.

Initially reported as a boat fire, the situation quickly escalated resulting in an explosion, leaving several individuals with extensive burns.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were quick to arrive at the unfolding emergency, with

two Ambulance Victoria helicopters attending to provide urgent medical attention, with four children amongst the five injured.

A spokesperson from Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics responded to an explosion on a boat on January 10.

“A man believed to be in his 30s was assessed for burns to his leg and was in a stable condition,” the spokesperson said.

“Three primary schoolaged children were assessed for burns to their lower body and were all in a stable condition.

contain the situation, with the incident deemed safe at 6.45pm allowing emergency responders to assess the aftermath and provide additional support to the affected individuals.

Details surrounding the cause of the explosion are now under investigation, with authorities working to gather more information.

New variant prompts COVID prevention calls THE spread of new COVID 19 variant JN.1 has renewed calls from the State Government for community members to take steps to reduce the danger for at-risk demographics.

Victorian chief health officer Clare Looker has issued a health alert formally urging Victorians to wear a face mask if experiencing COVID symptoms or visiting high-risk settings, following a spike in JN.1-related hospitalisations in recent weeks.

According to Ms Looker, the current sevenday average hospitalisation figure of 377 had increased in recent weeks in the wake of high levels of COVID-19 hospitalisations in November, however, was yet to reach the peak (488) experienced during last year’s May and June wave.

She said the variant had been causing similar impacts internationally, and had quickly become the most prevalent single sub-variant identified in wastewater samples across the state.

“If you have symptoms, you should not visit people at risk of severe illness or sensitive settings such as hospitals and aged care facilities,” Ms Looker said in a statement.

“Sectors providing housing, care, or other services to people at increased risk of severe disease (senior Victorians, those with medical comorbities or disability) should consider activating policies to reduce transmission during this wave.

“This is particularly relevant to health services (including primary care), aged care, disability care and Aboriginal CommunityControlled Health Organisations.

“These actions may include the use of N-95 masks in clinical care settings and use of recommended surveillance testing for patients, staff and/or visitors.”

Those with increased risk of severe disease are also urged to seek a COVID-19 booster vaccination, let fresh air in and meet outside where possible, take a rapid antigen test (RAT) and if positive, take antiviral medication if eligible.

Mansfield Shire Council begins community consultation as part of the 2024-2025 budget.

MANSFIELD Shire Council opened community consultation on priorities and ideas for consideration as part of the 2024-25 Budget and its 10 Year Capital Works Plan.

In developing the annual budget, council works through what is required to operate business as usual and to fund the annual capital works renewal program.

Customer requests received throughout the year are also reviewed to see what can be included in the budget.

Mansfield Shire Council Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said the early budget engagement undertaken by council in 2023 provided council with some great feedback, with 102 submissions received last year.

Cr Rabie said he was excited by the opportunity for the community again to be involved in the budget development process and encouraged everyone to put forward their ideas for consideration.

Lightning ignited a fire at Steiner School Gnome Hut A LIGHTNING strike on Christmas Day set fire and destroyed the beloved Gnome Hut at Mansfield Steiner School.

The Gnome Hut was built in 2000 by class three and four, assisted by their teacher Fran Cummins and some parent helpers.

It was made from wood, straw bale, mud and tin.

The hut was part of a unit studying African Culture and housing.

Since then, the hut has been a fixture of the playground and enjoyed by hundreds and hundreds of students for the past 24 years.

“Many thanks to neighbours Bob and Rhonda Carpenter, who noticed the smoke on Christmas day and called the fire brigade,” said principal Glenn Hood.

“Unfortunately, the fire was in the walls and the structure was lost.

“We are extremely grateful to their actions, which ensured the fire did not spread to nearby historic Merton Hall (built circa 1900), which houses the library and music rooms, or to the new class one and two building which was opened last year.

“Hopefully this year’s class three project will be able to build a new play shelter that will enable the next generations of Steiner students a new space for creative play.”

Shire to stay within rate cap MANSFIELD Shire Council is set to stay within the Victorian Government’s statewide council rate cap of 2.75 per cent for the 2024-25 financial year.

Announced last month under its Fair Go Rates system, the government measure seeks to keep all councils around Victoria to keep rate increases below 2.75 per cent in an effort to lessen cost of living pressures.

The government accepted the recommendation of the Essential Services Commission regarding the cap, which is equal to the forecast Consumer Price Index for 2024-25.

The rate cap limits the amount

all Victorian councils can increase their total revenue from general rates and municipal charges.

Ministerial Guidelines have also been released for service rates and charges for the collection of kerbside waste and recycling from properties.

Service rates and charges used to fund waste collection and management are not subject to the rate cap.

Mansfield Shire Council Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said council prepares itself to keep rate increases under the cap set by the government.

“Over the past three years council has kept the rate increase at an average of 1.75 per cent, acknowledging the pandemic’s im-

pact and cost-of-living pressures,” he said.

“Each year as part of the budget process, council reviews any rate increase, carefully considering community input, needs, and additional costs from new government regulations.

“Council supports the State Government’s rate cap, and its aim to make councils more financially responsible.

“That aim is reflected in our responsible Council Plan, focusing on getting back to basics, and in our annual budget, where each year we work within the rate cap to get our ratepayers the best bang for their buck.”

Mansfield Courier welcomes Trinity Knight THE Mansfield Courier recently welcomed graduate journalist Trinity Knight to the editorial team.

Relocating from the coastal town of Torquay, Trinity graduated from Deakin University with a Bachelor of Communication and Media.

She began her cadetship with The Courier last week and will cover a variety of topics including sport, council and general rounds.

In 2023, Trinity completed a threemonth internship with the Geelong VFLW Club where she interviewed players and coaches and coordinated the team’s social media strategy.

“The experience with the Cats really ignited my passion for sports journalism and also helped broaden my skills in interviewing and writing,” Trinity said.

“I’m really excited to follow footy here and use my skills.”

Trinity believed the most rewarding aspect of regional journalism was getting to know the local community.

“I’m really excited to meet everyone here and also really keen to work in a regional newsroom where I can develop my independence and skills,” she said.

“Journalism is really important for local communities and I’m eager to be part of that essential process.”

However, Trinity’s skills with a pen extend far beyond news writing.

The 21-year-old is an avid songwriter, citing Fleetwood Mac and Florence and the Machine as key inspirations.

“I really love folk and Indie genres and really enjoy writing songs and poems,” she explained.

“Even though they both involve writing, standard journalism is really different to songwriting.

“The creativity [of songwriting] is really freeing; it’s like an outlet to express your inner thoughts and feelings.

“I really like to write about nature or about the people around me.”

Trinity is also an accomplished gymnast, devoting nearly a decade of her life to competing at YMCA Geelong.

She reached level nine of the Australian Levels Program and then proceeded to coach junior recreational gymnastics for young girls aged four to 13.

“Working with kids is a really amazing opportunity because you get to share everything you’ve learned in your gymnastics career with them,” she said.

“It’s awesome to watch them grow.”

Trinity has readily embraced country life and has already interviewed key figures around town.

She attended Delatite

Winery’s Music in the Vines on Saturday and will also cover Australia Day and Mansfield’s Citizenship Awards.

“I’m really excited to be in Mansfield and keen to see what this year will bring,” she said.

“Everything here is so beautiful and I can’t wait to explore the environment and meet so many new people.”

Shire tourism steady over festive break

By HANNAH KENNELLY and EMMA OLIVER MANSFIELD residents and visitors celebrated the holiday season in style, with many ringing in the New Year at local businesses and restaurants.

Mansfield Shire business and economic development general manager Julie Williams said there was a slight decrease in business in December 2023 compared to 2022.

“The period between Christmas and New Year saw a slight dip in business compared with last year, but since the beginning of January there has been a steady increase,” she said.

“Last year’s visitor num-

bers in Mansfield Shire were influenced by the major flood event on the Murray River, with people changing their plans to avoid these locations and increasing our local visitation.”

However several businesses, particularly in accommodation and hospitality, reported operating at full capacity.

Overall, Ms Williams said local businesses were satisfied with the current activity and trade figures.

“The Bonnie Doon Hotel, for example, has reported averaging 1000 meals a day since Christmas Day,” she said.

“Goughs Bay Caravan Park, General Store and Boat Club reported their busiest

Christmas period in many years.”

Steve Klingsporn of Anvil Brewing, confirmed the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve was huge with the kitchen producing around 1000 meals a day, with a staggering 1450 meals going over the pass on December 30.

“Our previous record was just under 1000, however even though it was really busy the day ran smoothly and the wait time on meals was around the 40 minute mark,” said Steve.

Steve said that the period was busier than the previous year for the venue, with a variety of DJs scheduled for added entertainment.

As for New Year’s Eve it-

self, the night was busy with the beer garden full, and over 900 meals ordered.

“It was quite a mixed crowd,” Steve said.

“There was an older crowd who were in for dinner, and then the younger punters kicked on until our 1am close.

“However, New Year’s Eve for Anvil is not our busiest date of the year.

“Christmas Eve is becoming our big one.

“When I was growing up, traditionally it was the night for both locals and those returning home to the shire for Christmas to catch-up.

“It used to be huge and we’ve reinvigorated it, putting on DJs and making a night of it.”

Haines to offer insight at housing summit

By STEVE KELLY INDI Independent federal MP Helen Haines will be a guest speaker at the National Regional Housing Summit in Canberra when it’s held next month.

Dr Haines has worked with co-host Regional Australia Institute to help bring the summit to fruition and she will be one of seven guest speakers at the event.

Real Estate Institute of Australia and Master Builders Australia are also hosting the summit.

MP’s push for regional housing continues in national arena

Unique place-based solutions through policy and investment will be addressed, along with various regional housing market clusters identified through RAI’s research.

The event on February 9 will convene local governments and communities, federal and state governments, industry and peak body representatives, and the not-for-profit sector to identify solutions and ensure the region’s housing needs are understood and reflected in new and emerging housing policy and investment.

In 2023, Dr Haines introduced her ‘Unlocking Regional Housing Bill’ which specifically sought to ad-

dress the housing crisis in regional, rural and remote Australia, by making funding easier to access and requiring at least 30 per cent of funding to go to regional, rural and remote Australia.

However, her amendments were rejected in parliament despite one in three people living outside large cities in Australia.

Dr Haines explained at the time that without legislation that ensures regional Australia is explicitly considered with funding, there is no guarantee that the billions of dollars announced for housing will flow to regional Australia, and the communities where it is needed most.

All of these and more.

I watched the December 12 council meeting and was disappointed with councilors voting three to one in favour of a planning permit in Chenery Street.

Rear of an existing house, an additional two-storey building to be used as two residences, with council reasoning that it “complies with Vic Building Regulations”.

The building regulations are Melbourne-centric and don’t differentiate between Melbourne and rural.

Permutations used are often the bare minimum allowed.

No gardens, no trees.

With extreme heat and heavier rains increasing, more trees and permeable areas are needed, not less.

Nobody wants a two storey building, two to three metres from their kitchen, bedroom or loungeroom windows or your new second storey neighbours having free viewing access into your backyards.

Mansfield’s Planning Strategy states that it “encourage development that is sensitive to

the character of Mansfield township.

“It will preserve the landscapes and character that we love.”

Most developers only consideration is money, they don’t give a rats about residents or town character.

The council uses lots of words emphasising the importance of keeping the “character” of Mansfield with “sensible noninvasive” building practices.

What’s next, three or four storeys, as long as it’s within the building regulations?

Why isn’t the council upholding its own Planning Strategy?

Water management continues

By LYNN ELDER WITH Lake Eildon sitting at 99.6 per cent capacity as of last week, the Goulburn-Murray Water authority made the confident decision that daily releases from the lake will be increased from 5000 megalitres to 7500 megalitres as of 10am on Friday, January 12.

As per the authority’s updates on their website it was anticipated releases remaining at this level throughout last weekend, although there would be continuous monitoring of conditions to determine if any changes were required.

According to Goulburn-Murray Water, “this is well below the minor flood level in the Goulburn River at Eildon, which is 12,700 mega litres per day, and will not lead to increased flows at Seymour or Yea”.

Current Bureau of Metrology forecasts do not indicate any significant rainfall until later next week.

Meanwhile for those impacted by recent flooding jointly funded disaster assistance has been initiated for communities including the Mansfield Shire impacted by the Victorian floods and storms from December 24, 2023 onwards, under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

This assistance covers several communities and councils within the registered Local Government Areas including neighbouring, Benalla Rural City,

Murrindindi and Strathbogie Shires.

Eligible community members whose homes have been impacted by the recent floods and storms can access emergency relief assistance through the Personal Hardship Assistance Program (PHAP) led by the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

To be eligible for a relief payment the following requirements apply, if your principal place of residence is, or was, in an evacuation warning area, and the floods or storms have damaged your home; or your home has flooded above the floor.

Assistance under the PHAP includes a one-off payment of $640 per adult and $320 per child up to a maximum of $2,240 per eligible family to help cover the costs of essentials like food, clothing, medication and accommodation.

Visit an emergency relief entre, or contact your local council to apply.

The Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes said, “We’re working hand-in-hand with the Commonwealth Government to make this funding available, for community members and councils who need support during this incredibly difficult time.”

“By making emergency relief assistance available it goes someway to help with the immediate needs of Victorians who in many cases are still recovering from previous significant emergency events in recent years.”

Treated wastewater to be released into Fords Creek

EILDON SPILLWAY: The Goulburn-Murray Water authority have made the decision to increase daily releases from the lake to 7,500 mega litres.

FULLY treated wastewater from Goulburn Valley Water’s (GVW) wastewater management facility in Mansfield will be released over the coming weeks.

Wastewater storage lagoons at Mansfield, Seymour, Kilmore, Broadford, and Nagambie are reaching capacity after weeks of extensive rain and extreme weather.

According to GVW, wastewater will be released from each system, as required, into Seymour’s Back Creek, Kilmore Creek, Sunday Creek Broadford, Wormangel Creek Nagambie, and Fords Creek Mansfield.

Approximately one to four megalitres per day will be release, depending on the waterway .

GVW’s Wastewater and Recycling Coordinator Stuart Harris said discharging excess fully treated wastewater from storages helps to reduce any potential for uncontrolled overflows.

He said although releases will be short-term, they will continue until climatic conditions improve and irrigation can begin at the facilities. “ The water being released has been fully treated and meets Class C standards,” Mr Harris said. “ We’ve informed the EPA of these releases and will monitor for any unexpected impacts on the environment.

“Strict water quality monitoring processes remain in place to protect the health of local communities and environments.”

Festive night for Music in The Vines

WHILE most of North East Victoria battled miserable skies and drizzly downpours last Saturday, Delatite Winery’s Music in the Vines was a fortunate outlier.

The annual event welcomed sunny skies as locals and visitors enjoyed an afternoon filled with good wine, food and music.

Melbourne born folk band Famous Will headlined the afternoon, serenading the crowd with their effortless harmonies and catchy melodies.

Emerging artist Seela Carrick and musician Will Campbell also wowed audiences with covers of Amy Winehouse’s Valerie and Vance Joy’s Riptide.

Local businesses, Swiftcrest Distillery and Buller Road Brewery kept crowds hydrated with delicious drinks and cocktails all night long.

Many visitors opted for the pre-ordered picnic hamper which included cured meat and cheese with seasonal accompaniments, with a bottle of Delatite Wine.

THE IB Diploma is scored from a maximum of 45 points.

For a full diploma, students study six subjects that are wide-ranging: a first language, an additional language, a humanities, a science and in most cases an arts subject.

Each subject is scored on a one to seven scale and an additional three points can be earned through the Core: studies in Theory of Knowledge (a course that centres critical thinking across academic disciplines as well as everyday circumstances, asking the fundamental question how do we know?) and an Extended Essay (a 4000 word research essay on a topic of the student’s choice).

Vale: Roy Booth, life well lived OBITUARY

Bradley (Roy) Edward Booth Born May 14, 1929 Died December 12, 2023 ROY Booth was born Bradley Edward Booth and was an only child.

He lost his father as a young boy and his mother worked hard to raise him on her own.

It can’t have been easy for his mother – or for Roy, with no father figure.

Roy recalled wagging school, and, with his mother, moving from Ascot Vale, to Moonee Ponds and finally Glenferrie.

It seems there was just the two of them – no aunts, uncles or cousins.

We wonder why he went by the name Roy. Evidently his father’s name was Roy and he wasn’t enamoured by his given names.

Following school, he joined the navy.

If you have been in his living area at home, you’ll remember he had much naval memorabilia on the walls so; it must have been a significant part of his life – as was the RSL when he moved here to Mansfield.

His job in the navy was listed as boiler maker but Roy considered this job description overrated in light of the work involved.

He was not one for talking of his naval experiences but he did share stories with fellow RSL members.

He travelled the world with the navy.

Roy said he would have liked to have become a motor mechanic but tests showed he didn’t have the aptitude, so the navy trained

him to be a painter and he (later) had his own business.

He was proud to have Myer and Portmans amongst his clients.

Painting a house for a Mrs Freda Casey was how he met his wife Freda.

Marrying Freda meant that Roy gained a young stepson, Geoffrey.

According to Brent Howes, who was growing up in Karingal at the time, Roy and Freda were instrumental in the founding of the Karingal Football Club in 1966 and later became life members.

The inaugural president, Roy served for nine consecutive years ably assisted by Freda.

Roy’s step-grandson rang a past president, Alec Robinson, informing the club of Roy’s passing.

On Facebook, the club has paid tribute to Roy. He would have been chuffed – as he would have been had he known club members came to his funeral.

On retirement, he and Freda moved to Bonnie Doon where he became involved in the Bonnie Doon Football Club of which he was also a life member.

It was here that the Howes, owning the Bonnie Doon Caravan Park at the time, reconnected with Roy. Roy’s mother was living with Roy and Freda at this time, and with her health failing, they decided to move to Elvins Street, Mansfield.

However, it wasn’t long before his mum needed more specialised care.

Tough times followed for Roy, his Mum died, and not long after, Freda passed.

Freda and Roy had had over 50 very happy years of marriage.

Football was still a central interest and he was happy to embrace the Mansfield Football Club – so much so that he was a life member of this club too.

Added to that was his par-

ticipation in the RSL and the Masonic lodge.

Roy said that he hated his own cooking – so he was a frequent diner at the golf club and elsewhere.

Eventually, he met his darling Betty and they were both so happy together, marrying in 2005.

They went on several cruises, toured New Zealand and did a few road trips.

They were regulars at nearly every café and restaurant in Mansfield.

They met friends at the golf club every Friday night, played bowls and attended all the footy matches.

They cut a classy couple at the Mansfield Races.

Roy’s navy training had served him well - he always took pride in his appearance and grooming.

Sadly, Betty died early in 2014.

Roy described his time with Betty as wonderful years, appreciating all she had brought to his life – including her family.

His friendship with Brent and Cheree Howes stepped up, and after Cheree lost her parents, Delly and Les Brackman, Roy became a fatherly figure to her and a grandfatherly figure to her children and grandchildren and Cherie willingly looked out for him.

Once the AFL season started, Roy looked forward to Mark Gibney, Betty’s son-inlaw, ringing to get his footy tips and Mark always rang to remind him when the Essendon match was commencing on Channel 7.

Of an evening, Roy enjoyed a Bundy and coke.

Rum was always his preferred drink, probably developed a taste for it in the navy, where rum was added to the water during long voyages at sea, to make it safe to drink.

He continued to dine out but was also getting Meals on Wheels several times a week and home carers were helping.

Fortunately, even though he had several health issues, with much help, he continued to manage at home.

He was absolutely delighted when Betty’s son, Jim and grandson, Hamish, visited him - exactly a month before his passing.

He died peacefully at Mansfield Hospital on December 12, aged 94.

Great recognition for Josh COMMUNITY Bank Mansfield & District is run by locals, for locals, harnessing the support of the Bendigo Bank network to provide exciting employment opportunities including Financial Services Traineeships.

After graduating Year 12 from Mansfield Secondary College in 2022, Josh Anstee took on a full-time traineeship doing a Cert IV in Financial Services and he is now celebrating his firstyear employment anniversary.

Josh and his family moved to Mansfield in 2017 from Launching Place.

Whilst completing his school studies, Josh undertook a school-based apprenticeship at the Mansfield Armchair Cinema - another great local social enterprise.

It was working at the MAC where Josh met the now Community Bank Mansfield & District branch manager Ryan Daykin.

“I was always very impressed by Josh’s attention to detail and customer service, which was reminiscent of someone who had been working for many years,” said Ryan.

“So, when Josh applied to work at the Community Bank, I knew instantly that we had to get him on board.”

In the first 12 months of his traineeship, Josh was

recognised at the Bendigo Bank state awards as one of only three customer service officers/advisors (in Victoria and Tasmania combined) to be awarded for their alignment to the bank’s ‘Critical Few Behaviours and Values’.

These values include teamwork, engagement, performance, and passion, with the mandate to act commercially, move fast to help customers achieve their goals, recognise people for their impact and actively challenge the status quo.

Nominations were based on meeting performance targets consistently, acknowledging people for role modelling and demonstrating the Bendigo Bank critical few behaviours and values, and promoting the culture Bendigo Bank wants to foster within the organisation.

Josh was nominated because he had excelled in his role from the first day he started, and had impressed the team with his intelligence, tenacity, and hardworking nature, always working to achieve great results for his customers.

“It’s great to have our local talent being recognised nationally through supportive social enterprises such as The MAC and our Bendigo Bank - Community Bank Mansfield & District,” said Ryan.

THE Australian Deer Association is set to take things into its own hands to curb the amount of rogue hunters in the Mansfield and Tolmie areas, after losing patience with the Department of Sustainability and Environment.

The recent conviction of a rogue hunter in the Alpine National Park, in which evidence was captured on film by an ADA member, was the catalyst for two-man teams on vigilante style patrols being placed in problem areas.

In sport, when 16 year old Heath Daykin hit his tee shot off the seventh hole at the Mansfield Golf Club, he had a feeling he had hit at it well.

But Heath had no idea how well until a couple of ladies on an adjacent hole told him first it had gone in for his first hole in one.

60 years strong for Tomics

LOVE ENDURES FOR RITA AND TOM

I

t was over 60 years ago at the then Volkering’s Café, that a 16-year-old Mansfield girl Rita Newton met the love of her life, a good looking 18-year-old Tom (Dragoslav) Tomic.

However, he’s lucky to be here for their special 60th anniversary, following an attack by a swarm of bees late last year.

Tom, as he was to be known instead of his Serbian (former Yugoslavian) name, moved to the district to work for the Country Roads Board (CRB) at Mirimbah before being transferred to Mansfield, where he met his future bride.

Tom’s journey to Australia began in war-torn Europe.

As a 12-year-old boy along with his mother and 16-yearold brother Ziverad, they were amongst the first families from behind the “Iron Curtain” to leave in 1953.

His father Zivko, who in 1941 enlisted in the Yugoslav army, was taken as a prisoner of war by the Germans during World War II. After the war, he became displaced when unable to find his family, which meant Tom grew up in the former Yugoslavia without any contact for several years.

Zivko Tomic emigrated to Australia, where the Blair family employed him on a farm at Bullioh near Corryong and, with their help and government officials, finally located his family to organise and pay for their passage by ship to Melbourne.

“My dad didn’t want to go back and fought tooth and nail to make sure that we got out of Europe to come to Australia,” said Tom. Rita’s time in Mansfield began at the age of four with her father’s transfer to be the sanitary contractor for the local shire, from Yarram in Gippsland.

She has spent most of her life here, attending primary school and working at Gaffney’s Garage, which Norm Pickering later took over.

Her family experienced the sad loss of her older brother, who was killed in an accident on Tolmie Road, coming home from the annual sports day several years ago.

Despite their different backgrounds, Tom and Rita were attracted to one another from the start.

Tom jokes that he used to be called a “good looking rooster” in his early days.

Although Rita was engaged to Tom when she was 18, her father insisted that she wait until her 21st birthday before marrying Tom, who was then 23.

She recalls those early courting days, she said “Tom travelled a lot with the CRB for work and use to write letters because there was no telephone then.”

Rita pulls out a large wad of letters that she has kept that remain special to her many years later.

Another form of correspondence in the absence of telephone communications was regular telegrams, which she kept.

For Tom, English was his second language, so he worked hard to overcome the language barrier and teach himself the language of his new homeland.

om and Rita exchanged their wedding vows at the Mansfield Church of England, St John’s, on December 28, 1963.

“I remember 1963 was also the year that the Geelong Cats won the flag,” said Tom, who must have been introduced to Australian Rules Football by his mates.

Rita said of the wedding day, “Canon RJ Brown married us and we were his last couple.”

Their 60th anniversary

has undoubtedly attracted a lot of attention, with Rita and Tom receiving seven letters of congratulations, including one from Buckingham Palace with a photo of King Charles and Camilla, the Governor General, the prime minister, the state premier and local politicians Dr Helen Haines and Cindy McLeish.

Obviously, Tom and Rita share a love of country life, including a stint in “share farming” near Corryong, where their first child was born.

With a two-year-old son in tow, Tom said, “We then came back to Mansfield and no job in the mid-60s”.

The couple have been hard workers all their lives, and Tom took up whatever work he could find especially farm work.

“I could turn my hand to anything,” said Tom. Tom found work, which led to buying their first home in Chenery St. “It was 80 years old when we bought it and it still had the old hessian walls with the wallpaper,” according to Rita.

Three other township homes followed, and two more children were born.

Rita said, “We have two boys and a girl, Shane lives in Queensland, Lee in Shepparton and Judith, who runs the Mansfield High Country Caravan Park, and one grandson in Mansfield.”

Their home of 18 years in Monkey Gully Rd incorporated the children’s names into the property name “Shajulee”.

“We built the house and garden from scratch,” said Rita.

She proudly shows off a photo book, which includes many “Open Garden” events held over many years.

More recently, they downsized to a home on Cambridge Drive, surrounded by an attractive garden.

Tom still runs a few head of sheep on acreage in Dead Horse Lane, and Rita enjoys her Thursday craft sessions in town.

The Tomics are very lowkey about the significant anniversary.

They will celebrate a special weekend away in February thanks to a present from their children.

Rita said they are not big travellers, enjoy their hobbies, and share a love of gardening.

Reflecting on their many years together, they agreed, “The way to stay married is to get along and work together.”

And what about the incident with the bee hives?

Tom owes his life to a quick-thinking wife, who rang the local paramedics who said, “...if she hadn’t, he would not have made it.”

Farewell celebrates life of Joy Forrest OBITUARY:

Joy Louise Forrest (nee Leatham) Born: December 15, 1959 Died: December 18, 2023 THE Mansfield Showgrounds was the venue for an outpouring of love and acknowledgement for Barjarg’s Joy Forrest.

Up to 600 people celebrated Joy’s life on Saturday afternoon, January 6, encapsulating a life well-lived despite health challenges over the years.

Down to earth and very much her own person, Joy would have loved the sendoff that family and friends created in her honour turning the rustic Ed Harris Pavilion into a place of fun and an opportunity to share special memories with each other and show support to her husband Bill Forrest and wider family.

Long-time friend of Bill and Joy Forrest, Julie Aldous provided a welcome which included an explanation of why the Mansfield Showgrounds was such an appropriate place.

One of the wonderful and successful ideas Joy had was to hold a chook auction at the showground.

As Bill says, “She was always thinking about something…and next minute I’d be organised to do something.

“She was a dead ringer for her mother in getting people to do things….a magnet for attracting people to be involved.”

Joy organised the chook auction to raise money initially for the Austin Hospital where she received her first kidney and then for the Mansfield Hospital to raise money for a dialysis machine.

Her husband Bill was going through a purple patch at the gun club and Joy coopted all his winnings – all sorts of prizes – for the raffle.

Billie Leatham continued with a description of how the day was planned, “Welcome to what we think you’ll find very different from any end-of-life event you’ve attended before.

“Today is the result of Bill and Joy’s nieces’ manic imaginings of what would NOT equal a funeral.

“The working title: FUNeral, a title, for obvious reasons not shared publicly, until today… in her memory,” said Billie.

“Joy could think of nothing worse than an over-thetop weeping and wailing service delivered by a man of the cloth who didn’t know her from Eve. “Joy did not want some

lived to the fullest.

“Not her exact words, but as you’d expect, she didn’t want a fuss”, said Billie.

“That’s pretty special, and I mention it because Joy Leatham Forrest was a very funny story-teller and one of the naughtiest girls I’ve ever known.

“She made us laugh til we cried and many times these stories were about you, Bill (in Portugal asking for milk).”

Georgia wrote the following eulogy which was read out by Billie which said retelling the story of Joy’s s whole life would be an impossible feat.

“This is the thoughts of a few nieces, who couldn’t help but retell some of our favourite stories about our Joy. “Joy grew up in Bridge

Creek, the fourth born for Nancy and Corrie; she was a little sister to three older brothers, Ken, Bob and Dick.

“Being a little sister wasn’t always easy, Joy was unable to out-run, out-hide or outclimb her mother when it came to Sunday school.

“She and Nancy would often spend the last few spare moments before church driving up and down the driveway calling for the boys who were hiding,” said Georgia.

“Corrie built Joy a cubby house in a great big cable spool.

“Ever the innovator, Joy christened it ‘Google Gang’ and Nancy used to force the boys to go inside to play with Joy. “Nancy would assure the boys that they were ‘so lucky to have a little sister’.

“They didn’t always agree as they sat in Google Gang drinking tiny cups of water and grass.”

Georgia described how

Joy met Bill at Brad and Cathy Park’s wedding.

One year later the pair was married in Mansfield where “Joy danced with every single person at her wedding”.

“If you’re ready for a good laugh, at Bills expense, ask him about the confetti in the Land Cruiser debacle on the way to their American honeymoon.

“Nobody tells it quite like Bill.

“Throughout their marriage, Joy and Bill went on trips all over Australia and the world,” Georgia said.

They travelled all over the territory, the Kimberly and down the west coast.

Joy walked and rode bikes in New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Tonga Islands.

In the 1980s, Joy, Bill and Kylie bought the Mansfield milk bar and transformed it into the Roundabout Milk Bar. “If she wasn’t already the

coolest aunty, she definitely was now.

“Rose recalls unlimited access to lollies and dim sims, and having serious bragging rights at school ‘my aunty owns a lolly shop, what does yours do?’.

“It wasn’t always smooth sailing at the roundabout, one particular Sunday, Kylie though she’d treat herself to a day off.

“Joy and her sister-in-law Jeanne were running the roundabout and Joy had assured Kylie that she would handle the usual Sunday rotisserie chickens.

“This was a particularly messy job that Joy usually refused to do.

“Towards the end of the day Kylie popped into the roundabout and asked Jeanne ‘how are the chickens going?’.

“The colour drained from Jeanne’s face as she said quietly ‘Kylie, don’t go out the back, and whatever you do, don’t mention the chickens’.

“Kylie, naturally, went straight out the back.

“There, she was greeted with a warzone of 20 half cooked rotisserie chickens, some still speared on the spit, some laying on the ground and some hanging from the mesh fence in the backyard, “ according to Georgia.

“Joy, who had apparently become quite frustrated during the process, had opened the oven and flung them out as far as she could.

“Joy’s latest business endeavour was her coffee van, while entering the modern era of PayPass, Joy showed her generosity by accidently paying for every single coffee herself, for days, by leaving her own bank card in the back of her phone.

“While Joy was a business lady, she was, at heart, an artist like her mother.

“She sewed, snuck filthy limericks into floral still lifes, painted, gardened, doodled, and threw herself into pottery.

“Joy was a very special aunt and great aunt.

“She would send you home with shoeboxes full of ducklings without asking your parents.

“She would sew you wild clothing with secret buttons and pockets, and she was known to accidently hire inappropriate movies for movie night.

“While we would have liked her to live forever, she knew what she wanted from her life and what she was willing to endure.”

Joy Louise Forrest, dearly loved wife of Bill, passed away peacefully on December 18, aged 64, at the Mansfield District Hospital.

Both the Forrest and Leatham families would like to thank mourners for their support on January 6.

Bill said, “I would like to thank the hospital staff and Dr Will Twycross at Mansfield Hospital.

He also thanked the nurses and doctors at St Vincent’s Private, Dr Dan Chubb, and Edwina and Chris Stevenson.

“I would like to thank Billie Leatham and Bonnie Leatham and their helpers for setting up the show pavilion and the clean up as well.”

He thanked, “The Mansfield A & P Society, Megan Knapp, the Mansfield Rotary Club, and all the others who helped to make it such a special day for Joy”.

Eyes on the pies in bake-off

By HANK THIERRY MANSFIELD’S first Dutch Apple Pie bake-off was held in Swiftcrest Distillery’s newly opened Tasting Pods in the first week of January.

The challenger, representing Bulleroo Luxury Farmstay, Eddie “The Tiler” Van der Hoeven threw down the gauntlet over three years ago and has been relentless in his provocations ever since.

After a recent onslaught of smack talking and gesturing, things finally came to a climax when Hank “The Distiller” Thierry, of Dutch Apple Pie Moonshine fame, finally accepted the challenge, and the bake-off was on.

Local Delatite Hotelier and referee, Dean “Ring a Ding” Belle, was brought in for the judging.

Dean’s extensive hospitality experience and Dutch heritage made him perfectly qualified for the task at hand.

Round one was assessed on presentation and colour.

Swiftcrest presented a beautifully plated pie, resting elegantly upon a black napkin and a white porcelain plate.

The pie crust was evenly coloured with a subtle orange glow, reminiscent of Mansfield’s early morning sunrises.

Bulleroo arrived five minutes late with their pie still in the tin, no plate and were therefore deducted points by referee Belle.

While Eddie claimed there was a Dutch windmill outlined in pastry in the centre of his pie, to all onlookers no windmill could be distinguished.

Remarks were made that perhaps the pastry looked slightly overcooked.

Round one went to Swiftcrest.

Round two was judged on aroma and the ability to cut that perfect slice.

PUTTING ASIDE DIFFERENCES: Hank and Carrie Thierry from Swiftcrest Distillery, Dean Belle from The Delatite Hotel, with Eddie, Vickie and Tasmin van der Hoeven from Bulleroo Luxury Farmstay.

Round three was evaluated on flavour and texture.

Referee Belle was seen to fall into a dreamy silence, for a moment he appeared suspended in time with only his fork moving from one pie to the other.

Rosehaven’s Rose Gilder and Isabel Appleby - visionaries behind the initial concept, ideas, and funding - along with the late Bob Appleby, were recognised by the board of directors for their invaluable contributions, unwavering support, and ongoing input, unveiling a new honorary brick path in recognition.

This carefully crafted pathway stands as a testament to the commitment and excellence that define the Rosehaven Mansfield community.

Designed to honour and celebrate the individuals who have played a pivotal role in the growth and success of the palliative care hospice, the path symbolises a collective journey of achievement, collaboration, and community spirit.

Rose Gilder and Isabel Appleby, along with the late Bob Appleby, played instrumental roles in shaping Rosehaven Mansfield from its inception.

Their dedication and commitment have not only fueled the initial success of Rosehaven providing person-centred respite and end of life care, but have also continued to guide its growth and excellence.

Makers connect for Beolite market

By LYNN ELDER NEWCOMERS Tony and Sandra Fisher decided to organise a January makers’ market at Beolite Village to help residents such as themselves feel less isolated and share their talents with the wider Mansfield community.

The first makers’ event was held in the Beolite Community Centre at the retirement village on Saturday, January 6 from 10am to 3pm with stallholders reporting it had attracted plenty of interest from locals and visitors.

The Fishers moved to the village on September 1 in 2023 from Alexandra and joke that they are the “babies” at Beolite.

“We wanted something that residents could do and encourage them to use their skills,” said Tony.

Tony and Sandra were both involved in organising market stalls in Heathcote and wanted to use their knowledge and expertise to create the first Beolite Village Makers Market.

They worked with the other residents and the committee of management to help create the market.

For Sandra, recent health issues have reduced her ability to do the more physical activities at the village and the market was an excellent outlet for her handmade greeting cards and to make a few dollars.

According to resident Chris Wilson there was an expo held three years ago when various individuals got to show off their different hobbies.

At the makers’ market Chris showed off his 3D printing skills and his remote-control model aircraft.

For resident Mary Covill, an artist and former art teacher, the market provided another opportunity to sell her paintings and socialise at the same time.

“Living here is a good thing, you are living alone but not alone,” says Mary who moved in on Australia Day five years ago.

Other stalls included jewellery made from Australian gemstones, woodwork and needlework, all made by the residents.

Tony hopes the market can run once a year, maybe before Christmas, and continues to give residents a purpose to work towards.

Reviewing 2023’s weather patterns THE past year’s weather has kept the residents of the Mansfield Shire on their toes.

Mansfield saw 839.9 millimetres of rain in 2023, below the high mark set in 2022 of 971.4, the highest amount of rainfall since 1975.

Rainfall remained relatively low throughout the first months of the year until weather systems in June dumped more than 100 millimetres and soaked the shire.

Another rain event in October and December contributed to the high annual total, both also recording over 100 millimetres.

The month of November just missed out on the 100 mark, recording 91.6 millimetres of rain.

Temperature-wise, Mansfield’s maximums kept fairly cool, keeping below historic averages month-to-month.

On the minimum front, Mansfield was above average, with the usual averages of four

degrees a degree warmer.

The coldest day in town was a chilly 1 degree on June 20, 2023 while the hottest day was on February 17 at 35.9 degrees.

Mount Buller had the same high and low days reaching -6.7 degrees on June 21 and up to 23.3 degrees on February 17.

Warmer weather was to blame for poor snow conditions at the end of the season, with days around five degrees in early August warming things up significantly.

July, August and September’s averages were all almost double the historical data, highlighting the hot conditions making it hard for snow to stick on the mountains.

Summer holidays in full swing WITH the school holidays in full swing Jamieson has hosted many family holidays and celebrations over the last weeks.

Contending with COVID-19 reporting and a home filled with family from interstate and Victorian country, one property went into isolation.

The amazing storms and hail stones were surprising and the tropical humidity another difference in the comfort zone.

The Jamieson and Upper Goulburn rivers were a haven for local residents and visitors.

The Jamieson boat ramp was another very well attended location, with boating on the upper Eildon Lake at the Jamieson end, a must for water sport enthusiasts.

THE Mansfield Shire is to commence safety repair work on Gooley’s Bridge on the Eildon/Jamieson Road.

The timber railings are to be replaced by steel,.

The community have been asked to submit their wishes regarding the colour, with white preferred to the raw metal finish.

All suggestions are to be considered by January 18.

MONDAY last week the Jamieson CFA Brigade Management Team (BMT) met at the fire station.

The Dawn Service, Gunfire Breakfast, the veterans’ march and midday service and the reunion luncheon and the traditional 2UP game will all be going ahead.

The group met to discuss the directives and business carried out and/ or to be attended to, prior to the general meeting of the brigade members on Wednesday.

The meeting was well attended, and members unavailable were able to participate by Zoom.

Discussion was held on the local conditions and the extraordinary rainfall and humidity being experienced in the area which creates a different environment when it comes to bushfire threats.

Both the brigade and the community are aware that circumstances can change, thus a vigilant watch is being kept throughout the fire season.

THE Jamieson Historical Society Museum meeting will be held on Wednesday at the Jamieson Memorial Hall at 5pm.

The committee and members have been very busy during the holiday period with many local residents and visitors enjoying the presentations and themes, recently created for the season.

New members would be welcome.

THE Lake High Great Victorian Walk for Autism fundraiser is booking fast, with the early registrations still available at $90 per person.

The commitment from the team from Jamieson is almost a daily event, with the group walking many kilometres in their endeavors to meet the challenge.

The event will be held on

April 26, the day after ANZAC Day. The Mansfield Lake High Walk for Autism is a cause dear to the hearts of the local communities.

There are two levels - a 15 kilometre walk and a 30 kilometre walk - all culminating at the Mansfield Station precinct, for a social welcome back.

RECENTLY a group of holiday makers were enjoying their New Zealand Jet Boats, racing on the Jamieson end of Lake Eildon, where the lake has created a vista of boating joy.

The jet boat riders decided to drive their boats up the Upper Goulburn River to the 10 Mile and back.

The many swimmers enjoying the river were startled by the influx of speeding vehicles where safety is foremost.

With small children playing at the river edge and swimmers around the many corners of this beautiful river, residents and visitors alike were startled by the jet boat drivers, breaking the peace and tranquility.

Benalla wins battle against Delatite CRICKET U16

By MARK O’LOUGHLAN ON a hot and muggy afternoon, Benalla won the toss and was elected to bat first at the Benalla Rose Garden oval.

The bowling by the Delatite boys was tight and reg-

ular wickets helped keep the runs down.

Noah Whittall and Nick Hoskin removed the Benalla openers and then Charlie Watts sent middle stump cartwheeling to the delight of his team mates.

Max O’Loughlan contin-

ued his good form with the ball taking 3/3 and leaving Benalla reeling at 6/44.

Some steady batting and some loose bowling allowed Benalla to finish their 20 overs at 6/91.

Delatite started the chase with a disastrous run out in

the first over, but were able to steady thanks to a very patient innings from Nick Hoskin.

The run rate was slow but picked up significantly when Henry Berriman joined Hoskin at the crease.

Berriman batted with positivity and intensity, fin-

ishing with 23 not out while Hoskin carried his bat with 18 not out.

After being humbled by Benalla earlier in the season, this was a much better effort from Delatite, with the team improving each week.

Blue skies, damp pitch with Mansfield falling just short U14s CRICKET

By ANDREW COOK MANSFIELD’S U14s faced Ovens Valley United (OVU) at the neutral middle-ground of Arundel Street in Benalla for their first game for 2024.

Sent in to bat under blue skies but a dewy ground underfoot, De-

latite hoped the new ball would quickly lose its potency as it got wetter and wetter, which proved to be the case.

After losing an opener early, Joshua Cook and Cooper Martin steadied the ship and both survived until retirement, Cook making 11 in his first game of the season.

Jake Hoskins, Mitch Storer and

Felix O’Meara followed suit, all scoring regularly until they also retired.

Hoskins top scored for the team with 14, displaying some powerful hitting mixed with watchful defence.

Scoring then dried up somewhat, with Delatite finishing on a competitive total of 4/64.

Despite an early breakthrough

by Finn Stokes, OVU’s batters took advantage of the now dry outfield to score at a faster rate, best exemplified by Noah White who clubbed 31 including two impressive sixes.

OVU reached the half-way mark looking comfortable at 1/42.

Wickets after drinks to Cook, Eamon Nealon and Harry Berg put the

brakes on the run-rate but OVU still managed to catch Delatite’s total with two overs to spare.

Delatite will host Rovers United Bruck Green at Lords oval for a two-day game next Saturday, and with a game in hand over most of the teams above them on the ladder a win will be very handy in their pursuit of a finals place.

Harry McFarlane dominates with December nomination MOTORBIKE racer Harrison McFarlane has nabbed the December nomination for Sportsperson of the Year.

The 17-year old Mansfield local won the 2023 Victorian Hard Enduro Bronze Class Championship, beating riders with decades of experience As the name implies, Hard Enduro is a form

of intense endurance off-road racing involving rocky terrain, streams, steep hills, sand, extreme mud and other obstacles.

The Victorian Championship encompasses five different rounds and points are awarded to riders according to placings.

Harry finished on 1870

points in, 80 points ahead of the runner-up.

He will compete in next years’ Hard Enduro Silver Class Championship, a prospect he is really looking forward to.

“The tracks are going to be a lot harder, but I’m so excited,” Harry said.

“I really want to work towards Gold Class and make a career out of racing.”

Delatite wins on the road

DELATITE’S First XI won their first away match for the season in a tense onedayer against the Ovens Valley United CC (the Tigers) on Saturday at McNamara Reserve in Myrtleford.

A very hot day and a wellprepared pitch greeted the Mansfield lads, but skipper Lachy Scales decided to have a trundle first upon winning the toss.

The plan worked perfectly with breakthroughs early on, Joe Kelleher and Scales himself removing the first two wickets with just seven runs on the board.

The Tigers settled to advance the score to 42 when Matt Stevenson removed the dangerous Seamus Phillips for a swashbuckling 23.

Ovens Valley dug in again until Mitch Purcell again delivered the goods with two more quick wickets.

At 5/82 Ovens were starting to amass a solid total,

however the introduction of off-spin wizard Michael Burrows saw the game shift in the favour of the visitors.

He fearlessly tossed the ball up, getting it to turn and fizz off the surface.

He completed eight tremendous overs, snaring the magnificent figures of 4/21, including three cleanbowled.

Scales returned to bowl out the last batsmen in the 36th over, and Ovens posted a below-par 123.

The run chase started

NAIL-BITING FINISH FOR B-GRADE B GRADE CRICKET MANSFIELD’S B-grade team had another nail-biting finish on Saturday when Delatite hosted Yarrawonga Mulwala at Lords.

In oppressive heat Delatite were sent in and soon lost opener Al Bennett in the third over.

Andrew Cook and number three Adam Storer settled in for a seven-over 33-run stand, seeing off the opening bowlers and allowing Storer to open up his shoulders and score at an accelerating pace.

After Cook fell for 15, firsttime captain Kane Hoskins stepped up and built another solid partnership until Storer eventually fell for 32.

Two further wickets after drinks brought Richie Philip to the crease with his captain, with the score evenly balanced at 5/79.

Philip settled any nerves quickly with a booming six, and after cautiously getting his eye in he unleashed a display of power-hitting that would put many Big Bash batters to shame, topping it off with 22 runs off one over, including a hat-trick of sixes.

When he was out soon afterwards for 52, Delatite’s score had ballooned to 147 with six overs still to go.

Watchful batting from Delatite’s tail-enders meant they saw out their full 36 overs, with a competitive total of 152 set for the visitors.

Yarrawonga Mulwala started watchfully but in the fourth over, however two wickets in two balls from Cook halted any momentum.

And when Philip sent down an unplayable jagging delivery to clean bowl lefthander Shaun Giblett and Cook followed up with his third, Yarrawonga Mulwala were struggling at 4/25, with batters two through to five

only contributing four runs combined.

Fortunately for the visitors at the other end was opener Marcus Hargreaves, untroubled by anything sent down his way and continually punishing any wayward deliveries.

At drinks the game was almost perfectly balanced at 4/82.

After the break the game was turned, and arguably won, by the juniors of Mansfield.

Nick Hoskins had Hargreaves caught behind for 51.

The next over, Orlando Miller took one of the sharpest clean-and-bowled catches likely ever seen at Lords to dismiss Lachie Phillips for 30, drawing applause from even the batter himself.

Captain Gary Browning shepherded his less experienced partners towards the total, but a run-out and two further wickets left the visitors 9-down and needing 43 runs from the last 48 deliveries, with a trio of dropped catches keeping the visitors in the game.

Tight bowling from Philip and Miller tilted the victory calculation in Delatite’s favour, Yarrawonga Mulwala ultimately needing 11 off the final over to win.

Speedster Lachie Pymer was given the ball and in front of a nervous crowd of onlookers sealed the victory with a caught-and-bowled wicket off his fourth ball, handing Delatite a nine-run win.

Delatite head to Myrtleford next week to try and continue their winning ways, with the added motivation of knowing that only one win separates fourth place from Delatite’s current tenth place standing.

well with Mark O’Loughlan and Gregor Fraser seeing off the new ball through the first ten overs until O’Loughlan was caught short of his ground.

Mitch Copey joined Fraser and the pair lifted the tempo and appeared to have matters well in-hand.

Copey (22) and Fraser (27) were both dismissed with the score on 64, however, and cracks started to appear in the run chase.

Glenn White was putting on a bowling clinic for

Ovens and removed three more Delatite batsmen in quick succession to put the Tigers’ nose in front, the score now 6/90.

Enter the stars with the ball from last week’s upset victory against Yarrawonga-Mulwala CC, veterans Stevenson (35 not out) and Purcell (28).

They knuckled down to grind out the 34 needed to reach the target and in a nail-biting finish, they brought up the win with just an over remaining.

Once the victory was safely secured, Stevenson put the icing on the cake with three towering sixes in the 40th and final over, Delatite ending on 7/149.

The win lifts Delatite off the bottom of the WDCA A grade ladder, and they will be looking to continue their winning form when they play host to Wangaratta Magpies next round in a two-dayer.

Eagles under 18 basketballer girls swish team nomination

BASKETBALL is a highlycompetitive sport in the Mansfield District and our representative teams are no exception.

The under 18s girls side had an excellent end to 2023, winning their final tournament in Shepparton in early December.

It was their third competition in four weeks, with the side developing a good rhythm, winning five from five preliminary matches.

runner up places.

In the end the Eagles won the Greater Shepparton Basketball Tournament, winning the grand final by only one point.

Before this, the team won the Wangaratta Basketball Tournament as well, beating the Wodonga Wolves by five points in the grand final.

The team has had an excellent season and will sure prove a formidable force in competitions to come.

Bowlers battle for Men’s Championship Pairs BOWLS

By LYN FOOTS OVER the Christmas break there were a dedicated few players enjoying some competition.

Tuesday January 9 saw 16 players getting into the new season with the winners being Mark Bettany, Doug Morley, Harry Smith and Philip Jensen with 2 wins 32pts from George Peterson, Kevin Nikkelson, Denis Sharpe and Christina Smith with 22pts.

Friday saw 21 players getting back into the swing of the upcoming season with the winners on the day being Mick Walsh, Alan Dobson and Tony Wilkes with 2 wins 34 pts from Mark Bettany, Tony Pridham, Denis Sharpe and Harry Smith with2 wins 33pts.

Sunday saw the beginning of the Men’s Championship Pairs with the morning winners being Graham Smith and Don Cameron

over Steve Spence and Steve Lewis 17/7.

George Peterson and Sid Revell defeated Rick Nichols and Doug Morley 14/11 and Tom Nicol and Shane O’Brien went down to Ray Robinson and Alan Dobson 24/9.

Ray Close and Peter McNeil, Mike Harrison and Mark Bettany, Peter Roberts and Nikko, John Foots and Noel Jackson and Nick Klein and Mick Walsh all had byes in the first round.

The afternoon games saw John Foots and Noel Jackson picking up an exciting win on the last end 14/13 against Peter Roberts and Nikko, Ray Close and Peter McNeil defeated Graham Smith and Don Cameron 14/9.

George Peterson and Sid Revell defeated Nick Klein and Mick Walsh 17/11 and Mike Harrison and Mark Bettany defeated Ray Robinson and Alan Dobson 17/6.

Next Sunday will see the semifinals in the morning

with Ray Close and Peter McNeil playing Mike Harrison and Mark Bettany and John Foots and Noel Jackson playing George Peterson and Sid Revell.

The final will be in the afternoon between the winners of the semis.

Sunday also saw our new member Michelle Mios playing in the District State Novice singles at Corowa Civic Bowls Club.

Michelle had a bye in the first game and played the second round against a local lady, winning impressively 21/10.

Michelle had to front up again for another game after a long day, having an awesome win again 21/12.

The finals will be held this Sunday at Benalla.

We wish Michelle and Tilley all the very best bowling.

GOLF MANSFIELD MEN’S GOLF THE second week of the New Year has once again seen terrific numbers playing in the three weekly competitions with some surprising results from newer members of the club.

On Tuesday there was a somewhat fun event played, a par competition off the gold tees.

Playing off the gold tees meant that handicaps are reduced to compensate for playing a shorter course.

The winner was Phil Conway with a score of +2 off a

handicap of one (Phil’s usual handicap is eight), in second place was Larry Ball who lost on a countback also having a score of +2, continuing his good form from last week and in third place was Shane O’Brien who had a score of +1.

On Thursday another great field of 76 played in the weekly Stableford competition.

With the large field there were three divisions with some great scores winning with the results shown below.

A Grade

1st: Rod Sargent (h/c 2), 39 points (on a countback); 2nd: Joel Sanford (h/c 12), 39 points; 3rd: Maurice Walsh (h/c 9), 37 points (on a countback).

B Grade 1st: Tom Nicol (h/c 17), 37 points (on a countback); 2nd: Stephen Daykin (h/c 15), 37 points; 3rd: Gary Johnson (h/c 21), 36 points (on a countback).

C Grade 1st: Trevor Williams (h/c 32), 46 points; 2nd: Greg Millott (h/c 26), 40 points; 3rd: Steven Shinns (h/c 29), 35

points (on a countback).

Well done to Trevor on his outstanding score, I believe that this was only the fourth time that Trevor has competed in a competition round, unfortunately for him the handicapper has very quickly caught up with him and as a result his handicap has been drastically reduced.

Nice to see Rod have a return to form with a great round of one under par off the stick and as usual Maurice Walsh continues to show up in the prize list.

On Saturday 53 players were greeted with warm

and humid conditions for a stroke round.

Once again with the larger numbers there were two divisions.

A Grade 1st: Shaun Wade, (h/c 5) -1; 2nd: Tim Willick (h/c 12) +1; 3rd: Brendan Egan (h/c12) +2 (on a countback).

B Grade 1st: Dale Boyd (h/c 30) -11; 2nd: Tim Riley (h/c 20) -3; 3rd: Tom Nicol (h/c 16) Ev. An amazing round by Dale who was playing only his second competition round.

Unfortunately for Dale his handicap next time he plays will be down around 16 which will make things a lot tougher.

Not sure if the weather conditions had anything to do with the scores, but only five players equalled or bettered their handicaps for the day.

Next Saturday sees the first Monthly Medal for the New Year and on Monday 29 the NEDGA veteran’s golf will be played at Mansfield with a big crowd of veterans expected from all over the North East.

Mansfield Swim Club continues to make waves in the pool SWIMMING

By FIONA CREIGHTON WITH the Mansfield swimming pool opening its doors in late Spring, the young and mighty swimmers dived straight into squad training, determined to train and for some, to keep competing.

A small but mighty team of three competed at the Shepparton Swimming Club carnival in November with some new events attempted and a few medals to take home to show for their efforts.

A few weeks later and it was a rather slow and soggy start to the weekend Wangaratta swim meet with rain and lightning stopping play and all swimmers sitting it out on the basketball courts for Saturday afternoon.

The storm moved through relatively quickly and the races started again only an hour or two late.

A juggled schedule meant that nobody missed any events.

Day two started earlier than scheduled but brought sunshine, blue skies and a long day of swimming.

Some new events tried, new skills learnt and lots of fun all round.

Plenty of personal best times as well as some more Vic Countries qualifying times.

Many thanks to Andy Setchell for transporting our marquee so that we had some shade.

Team Mansfield included Clara Creighton, Edward Creighton, Rowena Creighton, Vivian Knight, Harvey Knight, Heidi Setchell, Hannah Setchell, Amelie Walker and Kezi Wolfe.

Emily won gold for her breaststroke at the Tri State Games in Cobram in November.

Emily competes at the games every year and we are very proud of her efforts and achievements.

AQUATIC TRIO: Edward, Clara and Rowena Creighton competed at the Shepparton Swimming Club carnival in November 2023. on the first weekend on the New Year.

Again, wet and cool weather were waiting for our members, but with blue lips and big smiles, another smattering of PBs were achieved and again our younger members came away with some impressive silver ware and another Victorian Country Long Course qualifying time was achieved.

Well done Harvey Knight, Vivian Knight, Hannah Setchell, Heid Setchell, Lara Seaton and Levi Seaton.

All the hard work in training and travelling to competitions over the past months has really paid off for a few of our members.

Some amazing efforts of late will see Kezi, Lara and Hannah all head to Traralgon at the end of the month to compete in the Victorian Country Long Course Championships.

In a first for Mansfield Swim Club, Rowena Creighton headed to the Victorian Sprint Championships in Melbourne last weekend.

We will share all our swimmers progress in future articles.

THERE is one name that is synonymous with the success of the Mansfield Eagle’s under 15s netball team; Leonie Berry.

Ms Berry has had a spectacular year in 2023, taking the young side all the way to the semi-finals of the Goulburn Valley League (GVL) Netball competition in a tightly-contested bracket.

She was also selected as an assistant coach for the interleague round of the GVL earlier this year.

The player and coach has been recognised for her superb work, taking home the prestigious Youth Netball Coach of the Year award at the GVL awards night.

On top of this, Ms Berry won the Irene Poole Memorial Award and the Netballer of the Year award at the Mansfield Football and Netball Club awards night.

She also plays on the B Reserve side, winning the Mansfield Football and Netball Club B Reserve Coaches Award for efforts in the 2023 season.

It is clear that Ms Berry is a powerful force for good at the Mansfield Eagles and is deserving of the fourth quarter nomination for sports admin person of the year.

DELATITE B Grade’s Andrew Cook led the charge against Yarrawonga Mulwala in their WDCA match on Saturday.

Delatite won the match.

MERTON cricketers hosted Wangaratta based City Colts in the first game after the Christmas break.

Colts won the toss and sent Merton in with the homeside taking full advantage making 6/237 led by Vice Captain Jai Lerch-Mckinnon, top scoring with 91 in quick time, Lerch-Mckinnon was well supported by openers Daryl King 43 and Luke Benton 34.

Harry Craddock with 18 not out found some form with the bat in the latter overs, and T.Ormond with 3/42 was the Colt’s best bowler.

The undermanned Colts started positively, playing their shots and seeing off the opening bowlers, however the introduction of spin, saw instant success with young gun Henry Berriman ripping into the top order taking 4/36 off eight overs.

Luke Benton 2/18 finished the job for the home side in the 25th overseeing Colt’s finish on 144, with A. Thompson 28 the top scorer.

Merton will make the long road trip to Rutherglen on the turf and try and make it three wins in a row next Saturday.

READY TO SOAR

THE Mansfield Eagles’ senior footballers are preparing for a strong 2024 season under the watchful eye of new coach Jack Hutchins.

Players completed a four-week strength and conditioning fitness block pre-Christmas last year and returned to regular training last Monday.

Herridge, the later also serving as coach for the Eagles’ reserves.

David Holliday will continue to coach the U18 team.

Hutchins, a former Gold Coast Suns player, takes over from Chad Owens, who led the team to a sixth finish on the 2023 ladder.

Much like his predecessor, Hutchins wants to focus on consistency.

“Last year wasn’t a dis-

appointing year because we learnt so many lessons, many of which don’t reflect on the scoreboard,” he explained.

“We know we are capable of achieving great things, we just need to remain consistent and improve on some of the hard lessons from last year.”

Mansfield’s 2024 lineup boasts the usual heavy hitters including key forward Ben Christopher.

However, the team has also farewelled several star players, including the omnipresent and formidable Cameron Arnold.

“Cam Arnold and the Dale brothers have left the team, so their presence will definitely be missed,” Hutchins said.

“But we’ve maintained the majority of players from last year, most of which have been playing footy with each other

for around three to four years, so that chemistry is there.

“We’ve also had some really promising U18 players participate in training, which is always great to see.”

Hutchins said he was “immensely enjoying” the transition from player to coach.

“It’s early days, but I’m really loving it so far,” he laughed.

“I’m looking forward to the start of the season, to

the guys.”

The Mansfield Eagles will face Shepparton on April 1, the first game of the 2024 season.

Hutchins said his team was more than ready to face the Shepparton seniors.

“We know Shepp are a really strong team, so we are looking forward to the challenge and ready to play the best footy we possibly can,” he said.
