Targa returns to the High Country Peter Scales

THIRD QUARTER:
Despite past COVID reschedules, racing resumed triumphantly over the weekend in Mansfield
LOCAL CHAMP: Mansfield racer David Blunden (left) walked away with a second place trophy after the Targa High Country on the weekend, pictured alongside his prized 1997 Nissan Skyline and young navigator Jaidyn Gluskie.
THE flags were flying again over the weekend as the roar of engines echoed throughout the High Country when Targa racing returned to town. Sydney’s Jeff Morton scored a dominant victory in the overall stats, and Mansfield’s own David Blunden took a second place podium with co-driver Jaidyn Gluskie in the Early Modern category. Dave has long been flying the flag for Mansfield at Targa, and though in the past he placed third, the race has been hit and miss over the past couple of years. “We have undergone fairly minor tweaks in lead up to this event,” he said. “I had on board a new navigator, Jaidyn Gluskie he’s only 20 years old, but has an uncle quite active in a tarmac rally family.” Obviously the new crew and tweaks got the job done, as the pair walked away with trophies. Overall, it was a supreme display of tarmac rallying by Morton who dominated the three-

day event, winning by 2 minutes 24 seconds, after increasing his advantage by 43 seconds on an incident-filled final day. Leading from the start on Friday, Morton maintained a controlled pace to stave off all challengers in the 2019 Porsche GT2 RS which he calls ‘Red Thunder’. “We were here to enjoy this rally and we didn’t expect to be in a position we are in,” Morton said. “It’s also valuable testing for us ahead of Targa Tasmania - there is no bigger test for a tyre than the Jamieson/Eildon stages. “This is just a dream result and we are over the moon.” Experienced driver Angus Kennard was ready to pounce throughout with Steve Glenney calling the notes as the 2015 Nissan GT-R pair finished second overall. ■ Continued pages 10-11
