Driving up tourism on Lake Eildon THE State Government is unlocking more tourism opportunities and growing jobs on and around Lake Eildon by fast tracking the planning of upgrades to the scenic Skyline Road.

Minister for Regional Development MaryAnne Thomas recently announced $500,000 funding through the State Government’s Investment Fast Track (IFF) Fund to enable planning, consultation and detailed designs to construct the

remaining 15 kilometres of Skyline Road.

“This project will provide an important gateway to drive more visitors into Lake Eildon, which in turn will support the regional economy and local jobs,” Ms Thomas said.

The funding will enable the Mansfield and Murrindindi shire councils to complete necessary planning work ahead of sealing Skyline Road’s gravel surface.

The planning stage of

the Skyline Road Tourism Precinct catalyst project will include design works to improve access for visitors and locals travelling between Eildon and Bonnie Doon.

The project forms part of the broader Lake Eildon Masterplan, which received a $150,000 grant through the government’s Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund in 2019 to reinvigorate its visitor appeal around Lake Eildon.

The activation of Lake Eildon has also been

Skyline Road’s proposed upgrades will mark the first step in turning the Lake Eildon area into a premier tourism destination by opening the door to more food, beverage and accommodation investments as a result of easier road access.

The road is a key vantage point for sightseers to observe a snapshot of Lake Eildon and Victoria’s surrounding High Country,

with the road sealing upgrades opening the door to potential cycling events that will provide new experiences for visitors around Lake Eildon.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes also commented saying “fast tracking the planning and upgrades of Skyline Road will set up Eildon and Bonnie Doon to tap into new local business investments, drawing in more visitors allyear-round”.

The Investment Fast

Track Fund is taking projects from the ideas phase to be investment and development-ready, with grants of up to $500,000 for local councils, community organisations and the private sector for planning, design and business case works.

Mayor James Tehan said the Skyline Road Touring Route is a priority project in council’s Activating Lake Eildon Masterplan and council strongly advocated for these funds.

Facelift for our footpaths CONCRETE footpaths across Mansfield and in Woods Point are set to receive some attention aiming to address trip hazards and uneven surfaces to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Works have commenced outside the Alpine Patisserie, the Mansfield Hotel and RB Sellars on High Street.

Council said they undertake an

annual inspection of the footpath network to identify problem areas that require attention.

Through a safety and aesthetic lens, these areas are then ranked in order of priority to be repaired.

The works will aim to maintain safe pedestrian access by reducing trip hazards caused by cracking and pavement dislocation in the

concrete footpaths.

Local contractor Jasper Civil has been engaged to undertake the works as part of council’s capital works program.

Following an evaluation of the cost of the required maintenance, council has allocated $38,000 to complete the upgrades.

Mayor James Tehan said that

continual maintenance of council’s existing assets was a priority in the capital works program.

“Ensuring that our footpaths remain in good condition extends their lifespan and, more importantly, improves safety and accessibility for our community,” said Cr Tehan.

In addition to the three locations

on High Street already under way, further footpath improvements will be undertaken at the following sites:  5 Hunter Street, Mansfield;  10B Highett St, Mansfield;  2 Victoria Street, Mansfield;  48 High Street, Mansfield; and  Police Station, Woods Point.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-June.

FURTHER progress has been made at the Station Precinct with the masterplan now incorporated into the Planning Scheme via Amendment C44.

The amendment is required to incorporate the Mansfield Station Precinct Activation Project, Masterplan and Implementation Plan, May 2019 into the Planning Scheme to allow the wide range of uses identified in the masterplan without the need for a planning permit.

Mayor James Tehan said that this was an important step forward in activating the area.

“To date we have been able to use the space for community facilities,” said Cr Tehan.

“This amendment means that the great tourism and rec-

reational opportunities, both community and commercial, can now start happening in this space.

“The masterplan details a series of important changes that will enhance community and commercial activity in the space.

“We are well on track to making the Station Precinct a key destination for visitors and community.

“It’s the trail head (start/finish) of the Great Victorian Rail Trail and the space incorporates the Mansfield Visitor Information Centre, the Gadhaba Gathering Place, the Mullum Mullum Wetlands and a large historic display within the former railway station and as-

sociated buildings.”

The precinct will also feature the new state-of-the art $1.2 million Mansfield Heritage Museum which has been made possible thanks to the joint efforts of council, the Mansfield Historical Society, the Mansfield Cultural Heritage and Arts Centre, Community Bank Mansfield and District, Taungurung Land and Waters Council and the Gadhaba Local Aboriginal Network.

The precinct forms the major western entrance to the Mansfield township, located north of the Maroondah Highway, east of Withers Lane, west of Kitchen Street and south of private land to the east and west of the stock route.

This project is jointly funded by the Federal Government and Mansfield Shire Council.

Council has budgeted $3.9 million for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the project and has received $1.95 million from the Federal Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.

WORKS are progressing on the Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route, with the road base construction works on Withers Lane and Dead Horse Lane now complete as far as Ford Creek.

The final pavement sealing is scheduled to occur in October 2022 when weather conditions are more favourable to ensure a durable surface.

The construction of the new left-hand turning lane at the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Withers Lane will also be completed after the snow season, once weather and traffic conditions are more suitable.

A NEW Chapter of the Let’s Talk Foundation is being established in Mansfield but needs more people to join its group.

Let’s Talk is a foundation started in Warrnambool and has now gone state-wide focusing on discussing mental health issues and ways to help those suffering.

Let’s Talk is a group - or chapter - of like-minded community people who aim to break the stigma of mental health, prevention of suicide and self-harm hence the name “Let’s Talk”.

In February this year a public meeting was held in Mansfield where some 50 people attended and heard the Foundation’s aims which are: 1. Remove the stigma of mental health; 2. Encourage those who have problems to speak out and seek help; and 3. Raise community confidence in supporting those with mental health issues.

Acting secretary of the newly formed Let’s Talk chapter in Mansfield, Ian Ribbons, knows all too well the effects of someone who has suffered mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

He said that people who are suffering are often too afraid to speak up fearing the stigma which can be put on them.

“And people who are aware of someone with issues are afraid to approach them because they simply do not know what to say to them,” Mr Ribbons said.

“And those suffering prefer to stay at arm’s length even to those closest around them.

“Those involved with Let’s Talk are there to be supportive,

“We are not professionals, we are community members who want to help others who need support without being labelled.”

At present the Mansfield chapter has nine interested members with another six who have expressed interest.

The small group are currently meeting on the third Tuesday of

each month at the Delatite Hotel at 7.30pm, over a dinner if you wish, or just come along and join the chat.

“We are yet to be formalised, but are working on gathering the amount of interest from those who will become dedicated,” Mr Ribbons said.

“The organisation has three main chapters across the state at this stage, Warrnambool, Colac and Bairnsdale.

and make this a positive community group who really cares about those who are suffering from mental health issues.”

When the original foundation was formed in Warrnambool, Freemasons Victoria donated some $200,000 as supporters for what it saw as a very worthwhile cause.

Other supporters have come on board and the Warrnambool chapter is leading the way with getting the message out there.

One of its supporters is a cycling team which takes on the challenge to ride from the Murray River to the Moyne River in Port Fairy raising awareness for the Let’s Talk Foundation with their dress code being the tops carrying the Let’s Talk logo.

“By sharing our message and wearing the foundation colours we hope to challenge the stigma that exists around mental illness and let sufferers know they are not alone,” one member of the riding team said.

The Murray to Moyne is a team relay event which raises funds for hospitals, health services and health-related charities.

Mr Ribbons said once formally established the Mansfield chapter will also have the chance to hold events such as walks, cycle rides, dinners, fun runs - places where people can get together on a social basis, be supportive, share their stories and encourage others to ‘talk about it’.

ARCC report lists reasons for visitor numbers down EACH winter season weekly reports from the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council (ARCC) keep readers and snow authorities up to date on daily, weekly and yearly statistics for visitation to the snow fields.

Recently the ARCC released its annual report for the 2021 season.

Chairperson Arianne Rose in her forward note to the report said the 2021 season was heavily impacted as a result of the implementation of COVIDSafe principles, with significant variations in settings for visitors from metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate.

The implementation of restrictions in Victoria meant that visitors from metropolitan areas were unable to access resorts for more than half of the 17 week snow season.

Visitors from regional areas were unable to access the resorts for more than four weeks, although some people with access to on-mountain accommodation chose to reside at alpine resorts over the snow season.

“Despite the restrictions, total seasonal visitation reached approximately half of pre-COVID-19 averages, despite the challenging operating conditions,” Ms Rose said.

In the summary of the 2021 season, the second season impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, Mt Buller saw natural snow depth

A BETTER SEASON: With the bumper early snowfalls this year resorts across the alpine region are anticipating a bumper snow season with visitation expected to be beyond expectations and the previous five years. above average from mid-July until mid-August, then falling during the remainder of the season.

The season started with above average depths in snow-making areas, with the average exceeded again between mid-July and mid-August.

Mt Stirling also started the

season with above average natural snow depth, and also exceeded the average from mid-July to mid-August.

During the 2021 snow season Victorian alpine resorts received 341,000 visitors and experienced 741,000 visitor days, representing 57 per cent

decrease in visitors and a 49 per cent decrease in visitor days.

This is compared to the 10 year average from 2010 to 2019 or 790,673.

Mt Buller’s visitor numbers decreased by some 59 per cent with 133,446 (10 year average 322,079) people recorded visiting the mountain; Mt Stirling gained 3307 compared to the 10 year average of 6963 - a 53 per cent decrease.

The impact of COVID-19 on visitation numbers and resort operations led to significant losses for alpine dependent businesses and organisations.

As occurred in 2020, the extent of the losses necessitated government support for industry stakeholders and ARMBs, the ARCC report stated.

Ms Rose also acknowledged that the 2021 Winter End of Season report produced by the council would be the last as of October 1 this year; new arrangements for the management of alpine resorts are due to come into effect.

Information on visitation to alpine resorts is important for a wide range of planning purposes including ski lift companies, accommodation providers, retailers, suppliers, Alpine Resort Management Boards (ARMBs), as well as various service providers and government agencies which use this information.

Highton Lane agreement LAST Friday I signed off on a side agreement with the developer of 53 Highton Lane.

Your readers will want to know the effect of this agreement.

I am able to talk about this as it is separate from the VCAT hearing content, which was “in confidence”.

VCAT and the Shire of Mansfield will still need to formally agree to the side agreement, in which the developer will establish 2.111ha of new native vegetation on a site in Dead Horse Lane, near Withers Lane in Mansfield.

This is, I believe, in addition to the offset cost the developer S & A Mansfield Pty Ltd has already paid on approval of the permit to develop 53 Highton.

The developer has committed to put in and manage, at a significant cost, additional revegetation happening in our town.

That is a good outcome for the town, but not as good as avoiding loss of old trees and patches of bush, which would be a better outcome when we consider future development.

Now it is over to the people of Mansfield to negotiate with the

Mansfield’s legislation which operators hoped would bring vital relief from soaring public liability insurance premiums last week failed developer if any of the existing native vegetation on 53 Highton Lane is to be saved; or they will let the project go ahead as the permit allows.

But remember that in order to create public parkland, especially with trees on it, council has to be convinced that it is something it is willing to manage for the long term.

Even if the developer was to concede some of the land with native vegetation on it, there is no guarantee council will accept responsibility for managing it.

That would need to be negotiated with council.

My experience is that the VCAT process is a good one.

For people who are on a pension or low income, costs can be waived, until you arrive at a point where expert witnesses must be paid for their expertise to be presented to VCAT. Each party wears their own costs as a rule, and that would include legal representation if that is required.

Students walk for Cancer Council research

A GROUP of the year 12 personal evelopment skills (PDS) class from Mansfield Secondary College has almost raised their target of $1000 supporting Cancer Council Victoria.

As part of their learning they are required to organise and complete a project that helps community members

From these events, up to June 3, they had raised a total of $938.50.

The last event for this project is a walk from Mansfield Secondary College to Bonnie Doon which will occur on June 20 (next Monday).

“We are extremely pleased

to say we raised a total of $354.50 on the baked goods sale last week,” said group representative Luke Dobson.

“All these proceeds are going towards our PDS cancer council fundraising project.

“With all your generous contributions, so far, we have raised $938.50 in total.

BUSY BUSINESS: A lunchtime ‘bake sale’ was popular among Mansfield Secondary School students and helped boost the $1000 target for cancer research with the PDS class.

AT Mansfield’s The Farmhouse, a fundamental part of learning in early childhood education is responding to the children’s interests.

So when the four-year old students from the kindergarten’s Candlebark group were offered the opportunity to see real farm tractors, tools and machinery for themselves they jumped at it.

And that’s how they ended up at Mansfield Power Ag in Mansfield.

Rachel Devere, Candlebark’s kinder teacher, is very aware of the importance of pursuing children’s interests so she listens intently to the kinder children’s conversations and watches their play, and then extends on their areas of interest.

And that’s how the children went from sandpits and mud pits at The Farmhouse to the “real deal” machines where even the tyres were

bigger than the children.

Ky and Mark Cronin kindly hosted the Candlebark group at Mansfield Power Ag and enabled the children to learn through tactile and engaging play.

“The excitement was high and the noise level followed,” Rachel said, as these kinder children relished the chance to walk among the machinery and climb aboard to see what it’s like.

“This approach, called experiential learning, enables children to be hands-on, more interested and more motivated to engage,” Kim Stoney, founder of The Farmhouse, said.

“Research shows learning in this way deepens the memory of the activity and imprints more learned skills from the experience.

“It’s wonderful to be out in the community so often.”

Jakara gains higher honours WINTER Olympian gold medallist and Mt Buller skier Jakara Anthony has been honoured in the Queen’s Birthday listings receiving an Order of Australia Medal.

Anthony received her highest award for service to sport as a gold medallist at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games in February this year.

Although Anthony lives in Barwon Heads she retains Mt Buller as her ‘home skiing resort’.

In her sporting career she reached the pinnacle of her achievements when winning Gold Freestyle Moguls at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February this year.

At the World Championships she was a silver medallist in Freestyle Skiing Women’s Moguls, 2019.

And going further at the World Cup she was a Crystal Globe winner in FIS Freestyle Overall Mogul World Cup Champion, 2022; a Crystal Globe Winner, FIS Freestyle Dual Mogul World Cup Champion, 2022; and has achieved 20 x World Cup medallist finishes, including four gold medals.

At the national competition level she was declared Australian National Champion in both 2018 and 2019.

Leading to her gold-winning championships Jakara first skied at Mt Buller as a member of the Team Buller Riders from 2009 to 2014.

In 2012 she gained a place at the NSW Institute of Sport Mogul program.

From 2014 to 2016 Jakara was a member of the Aus-

tralian Mogul Skiing Academy.

Jakara then moved on to the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia in 2017 taking her to world cups, world championships and the Olympics.

Currently Jakara is a mentor for the Sport in Talent Identification Camps and a mentor for the Snow Australia Inter-schools championships.

Speed limit reduction for Howqua Track

FROM 100 TO 50: The speed limit on Howqua Track will be significantly reduced for approximately 1km at the approach to the Sheepyard Flat Campsite.

AS a safety measure, the speed limit on Howqua Track will be significantly reduced for approximately 1km at the approach to the Sheepyard Flat Campsite.

The speed limit, which is currently 100km/h, will be changed to 50km/h near the intersection of Buller Street.

The change follows an investigation carried out by council in response to re-

ceiving numerous requests to reduce the speed limit, with reports of vehicles travelling at unsafe speeds along this section of road.

The stretch of road has significant pedestrian traffic, with many walkers, cyclists and horse riders using the road.

Council’s investigation found that high speed, along with reduced visibility due to dust, the number of near-

by houses and the sharp blind corner at the approach to the campsite warranted a speed reduction.

Mayor James Tehan said the move made the small stretch safer for vehicles and pedestrians.

“The Howqua Track is one of the main access points to some very popular camping and hiking spots and receives a lot of traffic during periods of high visi-

tation,” said Cr Tehan.

“When the community expresses their concern about a road, we take it seriously.

“The community feedback we received has ultimately led to a safer road.

“It’s great to see these community-driven ideas resulting in action.”

New speed signage will be installed over the coming month.

In recognition: three life memberships MANSFIELD Men’s Probus welcomed three members into honorary life membership status at their recent meeting.

Each of the three members have been an integral part of ensuring the smooth running of the club.

Changes for waste services FROM July 2024, Mansfield Shire Council plans to introduce separate glass and food, and garden organic waste services as well as continue to collect and process commingled recycling, similar to our current recycling bin, and the residual waste that goes to landfill.

Changes to how recycling is processed globally

and new Commonwealth and Victorian government legislation places new obligations on Mansfield Shire Council to introduce a four stream recycling and waste service.

The new services will be progressively introduced from July 2024 when council’s new contract for the collection and processing of recycling and waste in

the shire will begin.

Mayor James Tehan said that waste management of recycling and green waste is an important issue for the shire’s residents.

“A community survey in 2019 found that the biggest environmental issue in the shire is waste management of recycling and green waste followed by pest, plants and animals, and

“Recycling and waste services in the shire are large and complex.

“Last year council contractors collected kerbside bins that contained 2630 tonnes of residual waste, that was sent to landfill, and 1370 tonnes of recycling that is processed in Melbourne.

“It’s also an expensive service.

“In the last year the contract to collect and dispose of waste and recycling in Mansfield Shire cost over $2.3 million.”

The Mansfield Shire Council is about to start an in-depth community engagement process, called a deliberative engagement, to re-imagine the collection,

processing and disposal of recycling and waste in the shire.

“With the shire’s many diverse communities and their different recycling and waste needs, agreeing on the details of these changes such as the methods of collection, the frequency of pickups and the timing of these changes, could be challenging,” Cr Tehan said.

Dope grower gets a bond

BUSTED: A Jamieson man has received a six month bond after charges related to cannabis.

A JAMIESON man has received a six month good behaviour bond, after facing charges related to the cultivation and possession of cannabis, in Mansfield Magistrates Court last week.

Prosecutors outlined events when police executed a search warrant at the accused’s Jamieson property in December last year.

Police attended the residence around 9:20am to commence a search in the kitchen and located cannabis seeds within four Ziploc bags.

They continued the search and further located five cannabis plants in a garden bed adjacent to the rear door of the house.

The accused, who lived with his son at the premises, said that all of the cannabis belonged to him.

He was arrested and conveyed to Jamieson police station, where he was cooperative and made full admissions.

The accused said he’d used cannabis daily for a number of years due to intense shoulder pain caused by years of physical work.

He said he buys it from anyone, didn’t have a prescription, and the seeds he bought didn’t seem to take; the plants located were immature and not able to be harvested yet.

The magistrate told the

accused that he needed to speak with a doctor to get a prescription.

“There is a scheme that exists to help people with chronic pain and end of life difficulties,” said the magistrate.

“Don’t be a bloke about it; go and see your doctor.

“I know men your age don’t want to see one until something is falling off, but you’re 65 and you could be helping yourself better.”

The magistrate placed him on a six month undertaking of good behaviour without conviction and ordered for the forfeiture of the cannabis.

Vandal ordered to pay for damages A TWENTY year old Mansfield man has received a community corrections order for charges relating to a vandalising spree he went on with a friend in July 2020.

The accused will also pay restitution to cover half the damages of the businesses affected, the details of which were presented in Mansfield Magistrates Court last week.

Prosecutors alleged that on Friday, July 3, 2020, the accused (who was 18 at the time) and his friend (who is yet to face court for his alleged involvement) attended the Commonwealth Bank in Mansfield.

Following a verbal altercation, one of them kicked in the glass door at the business and ran off, leaving the bank with a $1247.84 repair bill.

The incident was captured on CCTV. Later that day at approximately 10:40pm, the accused and his friend then attended internet Café Connect in Erril St. A rock was thrown through the rear window, which landed on and damaged the surface of an air hockey table.

A rear window was also broken and a security light ripped from the wall as the pair searched for confectionery.

VANDAL: A young Mansfield man has received a community corrections order following a vandalising spree in July 2020. attended, however, the accused and his friend had since departed, fleeing over a fence and leaving their shoe impressions behind, and a total damage bill of approximately $1935.

The pair then attended the Mansfield Bowls Club, their presence also being recorded on CCTV. Here, one of them was observed kicking in a roller

door to the maintenance shed before punching and smashing a window to gain entry.

The accused and his friend then proceeded to take the club’s ride on mower for a spin around the greens, again leaving their shoe impressions at the scene, before the accused returned to his home address on the mower thereafter.

The club was left with a damage bill of approximately $5500.

Reports on all three incidents were received by police the following day.

Subsequent inquiries, photos, door knocks and observations led police to the accused’s premises, where he was later arrested following the execution of a search warrant at his home premises.

He was charged and bailed to appear at court.

Then in March of 2021, the same accused was allegedly involved in an altercation with another person outside a residential property in Mansfield.

The pair had a verbal argument which escalated to pushing and shoving, to the accused allegedly punching and breaking the victim’s nose.

30 sale stocktake

Defence outlined the accused’s history, which included a difficult upbringing, children’s court priors from age 14, depression, self-medicating with alcohol and a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder.

In the past 18 months the accused had since started living with his mother, who was in court to support him.

He’d unfortunately recently lost his job after falling out with his boss, having completed 18 months of a plastering apprenticeship and intended to pick that up again once he’d resolved these matters and moved out of town.

Defence requested for a corrections order to be considered, as the accused wasn’t afraid of hard work and the structure might do him good.

They also noted that paying restitution for the damages “was only fair”.

The magistrate agreed.

“I’m greatly encouraged to see that he’s pulled up in the last 18 months or so,” said the presiding magistrate.

“That’s not what we generally see; it’s usually a descent into drug use and further offending.”

The magistrate placed him on a community corrections order for 12 months without conviction and ordered damages to be paid in the vicinity of $3500.

Photography of Mini Farmers raises hospital funding THREE years ago local photographer Sandra Lording, of Sandra Lee Photography, began photographing farms with the launch of the Mansfield Farm Project.

Since then, she has met lots of farmers and what she calls ‘Mini Farmers’ - the children who have farming in their blood, those who’d rather spend all day herding cattle, driving on the tractor or feeding the lambs, than playing on an iPad or watching TV. Angus and Ollie (Parsons), two such Mini Farmers, are the inspiration for the Mini Farmers’ Book Project.

Ms Lording first met Angus and Ollie while photographing their family’s sheep and cattle farm ‘Wolverton’ in Maindample.

During the 12 months photographing the farm, she began to understand that passion for farming begins at a very young age.

“At every opportunity, the boys would be out ‘working’ on the farm, helping Grandad with sheep work and asking a million questions,” Ms Lording.

“I suspect they weren’t too upset when COVID-19 re-

strictions resulted in home schooling for a time - book work taking a back seat to hands-on education on the farm.”

For the Mini Farmers’ project, Ms Lording photographed 51 children over 27 sessions on farms including sheep, cattle, flowers, vineyards, hobby, dairy, goat and cropping farms.

“I met chickens, donkeys, dogs, horses, goats, cows, sheep and rabbits,” she said.

“The farms varied in size from hobby farms of just a few acres to cropping farms of thousands of acres.

“And then there were the motorbikes, quad bikes, harvesters, shearing sheds, milking shed, tractors and even a helicopter.

“Many farms were local to the Mansfield area, but I travelled as far as Katamatite to the north and Clarkefield to the south west, clocking up over 1200km.”

However, the project start was delayed due to COVID-19, and many shoots were postponed while families contracted the illness or were in isolation.

But most of that is all behind now and the Mini Farm-

Ms Lording said the MDH has been caring for the local community for the past 150

years and has touched many local residents’ (and visitors’) lives.

“The response of the hospital to the recent pandemic has been nothing short of incredible, keeping the community

informed, providing education, and co-ordinating and staffing the COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinics under incredibly difficult circumstances,” she said.

Mansfield District Hospital chief executive officer Cameron Butler said thank you to all involved.

“It is such a great concept and meaningful for a lot of people,” he said.

“MDH really appreciates the contribution made and especially for the Parsons family who have had a strong connection to MDH for many years.”

Ms Lording lastly thanked Rachel, Angus and Ollie for sharing their story and nominating the Mansfield and District Hospital as the recipient of these fundraising efforts.

“To all the families who have participated in this project - your donations have raised $1560 for the Mansfield and District Hospital, I say again a thank you,” Ms Lording said.

Kids’ camp a huge success

By SHAUN McMAHON THE Southern Cross High Country Kids’ Camp recently ran from April 11 to 15.

Kids from Mansfield and the surrounding areas attended, coming from a broad range of backgrounds, some of who are currently in stable living situations but may have experienced some form of trauma in the past.

A team of 30 volunteers, mostly local, some experienced from other Southern Cross Kids’ Camps around Victoria, came together after 18 months of planning and preparation.

“We smashed our fundraising goals in the lead up to camp,” said camp director Holly Cameron.

“Thanks to everyone for the amazing local support.

“The generosity of the town was fantastic.

“Some of our volunteers, who have done other camps around Victoria in the past, remarked how great the town got around supporting the camp.

“And a huge thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers who attended training in the lead up to camp, assisted in planning and preparation, came to meetings, packing boxes and planning activities for the campers, and of course for giving a week out of their lives to come on camp.”

Camp activities included a zoo excursion, crate climbing, flying fox, night hike and campfire, commando course, billy carts, songs,

A personal highlight for Holly was arriving at camp; the rest of the volunteers including the buddies were already at the campsite waiting for the kids with a red carpet rolled out, an MC waiting

to announce each kid as they got off the bus, and each buddy holding up a handmade name sign for their camper.

“All the volunteers were cheering as the bus pulled up,” said Holly.

“The kids on the bus turned and asked ‘who are those people and what’s on the signs they are holding?’

“I said ‘they are your buddies waiting to meet you and your names are on the signs’.

“The kids stared in disbelief at me and all rushed to the windows to get a better look.”

Camp director Chris Cameron reflected on one of his camp highlights, which was watching the kids get presented with memory albums full of photos from the camp, which their buddies had made for them at night.

“Every single camper’s face lit up with the biggest smiles of pure joy and delight as they realised what was in the memory

Dangerous pine tree removed THE large pine tree at the western end of the Mansfield Botanic Park carpark has been removed after an arborist’s report concluded that the tree could not be made safe.

The tree has a history of dropping limbs and council has been monitoring the health of the pine tree for some time.

Despite continued pruning and weight reduction works, the tree has continued to decline over the past few years.

The arborist’s report concluded that the only safe option was to remove the tree.

Mayor James Tehan highlighted that the sensitive location, size and poor tree health were all factors which called for action.

“It’s always concerning to have to remove a tree and, wherever possible, we attempt to preserve and protect our trees,” said Cr Tehan.

“However, the safety of our community is paramount.

“We weren’t able to save this tree and have had to remove it to ensure safe parking at the Botanic Park.

“To mitigate immediate risk to the community, the tree had to be removed as soon as it was identified that it posed a potential risk.”

Works were completed on the removal of the tree last week.

The works included grinding of the stump and planting of a suitable replacement tree in the same vicinity.

For the love of birds - Amazonia to go on show in USA exhibition WORLD renowned bird artist Tony Pridham has once again been accepted into the world’s largest and most prestigious art exhibition in the USA. “’Birds in Art’ is the most important art exhibition in the world for bird paintings,” Tony said last week when announcing his acceptance.

From about 1000 entries received from around the globe, only about 40 paintings are accepted each year.

Held in Wisconsin USA the exhibition only accepts paintings from top artists around the world.

The exhibition all up has about 100 exhibits which also includes a section from past masters and sculptures.

This is the tenth time Tony has been accepted from the 11 times he has entered over his wide career - and the only Australian artist to be included in this year’s Leigh Yankey Woodson Art Museum exhibition.

This year’s work is a large hyperrealist painting of a hummingbird - titled ‘Amazonia’.

Tony and his partner Nicky Goudberg are travelling to the USA for the exhibition opening in September.

Tony said they will be in the company of top world bird artists who gather for this event.

“Everything is laid on, food, wine, accommodation - it’s all supplied there in a wonderful old lakeside home owned by Woodson,” he said.

“All paintings are not for sale but, as it is a museum, you are always hopeful that your painting will be purchased by it.”

This is the only exhibition this year that Tony will be entering as he said the work behind an exhibition piece is tremendous.

“It took me about 3.5 months to paint Amazonia,” he said.

To get the image to paint this piece Tony spent seven days in cloud forest on the Pacific side of the Andes in Ecuador obtaining the reference material for this work.

BOOK RELEASE SOON: Tony Pridham, prized bird artist works on his final painting to be included in a soon-to-be-published book of his works titled “A Love of Birds”.

“The painting then has to be specially ‘crated’ (weighing some 100kg) for transport by air to the USA,” he said.

Tony is the great-nephew of Australia’s internationally acclaimed artist Sydney Nolan, Australian ‘art royalty’.

Nolan had works exhibited in galleries across the US, Europe and UK. And while talking about

this painting and his trip to the US to see it hung in the exhibition Tony just happened to drop the line that ‘his new book was almost ready to publish’.

Tony has spent the past 12 months gathering the best of his works, along with explanations of where the birds come from, how and why he painted them, sizes etc.

ham will be a hard cover, glossy publication and is expected to be completed when Tony finishes the painting of two pigeons, currently being worked on.

Tony and Nicky also recently went through the process of rebranding their gardens, maze and gallery.

They have renamed their property ‘High Country Gardens, Gallery and Maze’ which are a shared passion and a labour of love.

“The gardens are a safe, stimulating environment in which children’s imaginations, and their feet, can run absolutely wild,” Nicky said.

“There are gnomes to hunt, secret hidey-holes to play in, fairies and dragons to discover in every nook and around every corner, and delicious milkshakes, ice creams and treats homemade by Nicky at the garden cafe.

“There’s also a beautiful, light-filled gallery where Tony paints and shows his intricate, hyperrealist, largescale paintings of birds and other wildlife carefully observed on travels in Africa, the Americas, the UK and Europe.”

Big Jimmy steps down from top job B h But he iis not fully retiring jjust yyet JIM HUGHES may be thought of as a Mt Buller legend in his own right - and this year he has had a building on the mountain named after him - “Jimmy’s House”.

Jimmy’s House was always known as the plough shed flat - a small annexe attached to the plough shed which Jimmy uses during winter months to save him travelling time.

Jimmy’s House of course follows on from his ‘Hall of Fame’ photo which hangs proudly under the atrium in the Village Square.

However, Jimmy is also well known around the Mansfield district for other stints he has taken part in.

For instance he worked on The Man from Snowy River movies, has called 13 of the 14 Crack’s Cups held at the Mountain Country Festivals at Sheepyard Flat, and has also called the races for the Mansfield Race Club.

He has managed all three hotels in Mansfield at some stage, along with working at one of the local quarries - all among his long working history in the Mansfield district.

Jimmy started working around the district when he moved from Melbourne to Mansfield, originally to buy the Mansfield Hotel but that sale fell through.

After not taking on a hotel he leased the Mansfield swimming pool for 13 years from the shire.

First arriving on the mountain in 1978 Jimmy was asked to give Bernie Anstee ‘a helping hand’ and has been there ever since among other jobs held off mountain.

Described as ‘a character’ he can tell many stories of the changing face of the mountain; the funny and big events that have taken place.

After 44 years on Mt Buller, many of which have been in charge of traffic and parking, he has now taken a step back, taken on the role as ‘mentor’ to the current parking and traffic team leader Alex Macphee.

Apart from a few weeks in 1978, he took on a more

permanent (winter seasons only) role in 1979.

Asked if he had seen many changes on the mountain he replied “I’ve seen a hell of a lot of changes”.

He worked under Bernie Anstee for three years and then under Hayden Purcell and the then chief executive officer of the resort Sandy Jeffcoat as a leading hand.

Notably he has seen many changes to the car parking and believes that Horse Hill and Tirol parking lots are still not big enough to cater for the number of vehicles now arriving on the mountain.

“When I first started it was nearly all Land Rovers; we would often walk down to the plough shed to control the traffic and park them on

the side of the road,” he recalled.

“We also had the CSIRO carpark and now of course there is Corn Hill.

One of the biggest memories Jimmy has is of the big landslide in the early 1980s which blocked the only road up and down the mountain for about six to eight days.

“Hayden Purcell and I were the first on the scene,” he said.

“I remember the local band, with Chris Deutcher, another mountain legend, were playing at the Kooroora; we had to go and announce no one would be going off the mountain.

“Hayden and myself took a bulldozer down there in the dark ready to clean up the road but then VicRoads

took over and we decided to wait; that was a big thing.

“There was one way up and one way down but that was all controlled by VicRoads.

“One of the funny things that I witnessed on the mountain was when Bernie McWhinney was a policeman up there.

“There was a bit a ruckus at the toboggan run on Horse Hill; people didn’t want to move.

“Hayden was on the bulldozer and people were still not taking notice.

“Bernie McWhinney stepped in, took his gun from its holster and fired a shot into the air.

“It soon broke up the crowd, but he was in a bit of strife over that.”

Jimmy says one of the best things that is noticeable are the number of friendships he has made.

“Some of these guys have worked with me for 20 years and have become good friends,” he said.

“And some friends have been CEOs - it is pretty good to be able to go straight to the top when you need something; you get a pretty good hearing from them when you are on good terms.

“Jim’s world is the real world, I tell them when they are looking into changes.

“Parking is the busiest job on the mountain.

“I remember back in 2000 resort management decided to lease the carparking jointly to the buslines and the lift company.

“I was left sort of on the job to make sure they were doing the right thing - what a stuff up that was.

“We eventually got it (control) back again as we knew what we were doing.

“When I look at this place, the buildings that have gone up, the changes to Kooroora, the whole mountain - everything has changed.

“I remember the old Kooroora was the place to be back when Sky Hooks with Molly Meldrum were playing there - and when Molly was just a DJ on the mountain and others like the Hawkins Bros played at the venue.

“There are some people who have worked on the mountain for as long as I have, such as Christine Purcell (nee Hearn) and they have also seen the changes.

“I am looking at retiring but not just yet - but I am closer now to going than keeping on going.

“But I am happy doing what I am doing now.”

New procedure changing men’s lives in rural Victoria MANSFIELD District Hospital (MDH) provides patient care in many different areas to the population of Mansfield and surrounding areas.

Primary, aged, acute and maternity care, just to name a few.

Recently, MDH has approved a minimally invasive procedure to treat men suffering from BPH symptoms.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in which the prostate can enlarge as men get older.

As the prostate enlarges, it presses on and blocks the urethra causing bothersome symptoms such as frequency to urinate day and night, weak or slow urinary stream and a sense of not being able to completely empty your bladder.

While BPH is a benign condition, these symptoms can greatly affect a man’s quality of life and men experiencing any of these should speak to their GP

about treatment options.

Dr Mark Forbes is a urologist and founded Wangaratta Urology in 2010 offering a range of urology services to Wangaratta and the wider North East Victorian region.

Dr Forbes is well known regionally for his strong focus on individual patient needs and provides contemporary care with the newest procedures and technology, with a keen interest in minimally invasive procedures.

He advises that the first step in diagnosing BPH is to establish a relationship with your local GP which would then include a discussion about screening for prostate cancer as well as discussion around any voiding issues.

“Prostate cancer is often asymptomatic and requires a blood test to investigate; voiding (waterworks) problems are common and very treatable,” Dr Forbes said.

“Interventions can

Dr Forbes said that there are several treatments for BPH, including daily medications, major surgery or a minimally invasive

procedure known as Urolift.

The Urolift system is an alternative for patients looking for something other than drug therapy.

“Urolift is the only BPH treatment performed by a urologist that does not require

heating, cutting or removal of prostate tissue and causes no sexual dysfunction,” Dr Forbes said.

“The Urolift procedure treats BPH by lifting and holding the enlarged prostate tissue so that it is no longer

blocking the urethra.

“The procedure is quick (approximately 20 minutes on average) with a fast recovery time and little to no restrictions.

Urolift relieves symptoms and allows men to get back to resuming their daily life.”

Mansfield District Hospital has approved this minimally invasive procedure having managed their first Urolift case back in March 2021.

MDH chief executive officer Cameron Butler has welcomed this procedure due to the success in patient outcomes.

Although often only available to patients covered with private health insurance, Mr Butler is keen to have this available to all men suffering from symptoms of BPH. MDH is one of the first regional public hospitals in the North East region to approve Urolift in the public setting along with Northeast Health Wangaratta, where Urolift procedures are performed by Dr Forbes.

Community centre coordinator Gabi Nowicki said the rationale behind the group is to create social ties and a sense of belonging for the men.

“It is well documented that people who feel supported and not alone, tend to be more resilient and are able to cope better with life’s stressors,” she said.

“So it is not important to

create a formal atmosphere with ‘expert’ guest speakers where attendees merely attend and absorb, but to build a group where members feel they trust and know each other, can chat and be accepted as they are.

“For this reason, the Bonnie Doon Men’s Group prefer not to have formal guest speakers at their meetings.

“However, late last year they worked together on a project - creating a nude calendar - to raise funds for their group, and more importantly, to improve group dynamics, create feelings of mateship

and to foster deeper social connections.”

Group member, Rod Tamblyn said “the calendar was quickly created after the COVID restrictions were eased and has certainly been a success”.

“We had to have several reprints to satisfy the demand for them and we are looking to produce another one this year,” he said.

CWA Op Shop re-opens MANSFIELD CWA’s Op Shop has re-opened with plenty of winter bargains to be had.

The Mansfield headquarters for CWA in High Street would normally operate its Op Shop facilities from Monday to Saturday and from 10am through to 2pm each day.

However, as the hall facilities were hired out for the federal election campaign over May and early June, the Op Shop had to be closed for

approximately one month.

But the good news is - the doors are open again with heaps of winter clothes and goodies to keep you warm.

One of the co-ordinators of the Op Shop Mary McGregor said last week, the shop reopened in time for the early start to the Mt Buller winter season and snow clothing was the main sales.

Keeping bikes bush-safe A CRASH course in motorcycle safety is set to provide North East’s inexperienced dirt bikers with the opportunity to hone their skills during an overnight escape to Mulwala later this month.

Provisioned by Roadsafe North East (RSNE), the two day outdoor seminar will allow riders new to ‘going bush’ to practise vital skills in the company of experienced riders, with special emphasis on appropriate bike set up and emergency management when riding in groups.

Held on a private property in Mulwala, attendees will absorb two hours of practical information around appropriate paper mapping, understanding emergency procedures and riding skills before camping overnight.

Riders will then be given an opportunity to ride on a private track in the company of other attendees, managing real obstacles and further developing their skills.

The session will also cover laws while riding in the bush.

According to RSNE spokesperson John Weinert, the program had undergone significant change since it was last run prior to the pandemic.

“We haven’t done it for two years,” he said.

“We used to try and cram it into one full day but now it is spread over two - there’s a lot more practical riding this time around.

“Our target audience is inexperienced riders who are young, but you find even experienced riders don’t necessarily know how to set their bike up.

“It’s about setting the bike up and setting the person up to ride in the bush - it’s all the preparation work.”

Tickets for the June 25 weekend are available for $100, and include training and food.

Attendees are urged to organise their own accommodation, however, free camping is available on-site, with secure storage for motorcycles.

Expo timed to support local landholder pest management

State opposition’s plan to stop Labor’s eradication of Victoria’s iconic brumbies THE state opposition has pledged to stop Labor’s extermination of Victoria’s brumby population.

State Liberal member for Eildon Cindy McLeish said the coalition’s plan is good news for the many Victorians who support the protection of brumbies.

The coalition plans to shift focus to rehoming and veterinary intervention to manage the brumby population, standing in stark contrast to Labor’s plan for total eradication of the brumbies.

“The coalition will put an end to Labor’s cruel and inhumane plans of killing brumbies through aerial and ground shooting,” Ms McLeish said.

“We will completely rule it out.

“The coalition will conduct a thorough and more accurate

assessment of the brumby population.

“The coalition will put in place population management methods that focus on rehoming and veterinary intervention, and liaison with New South Wales to coordinate efforts across state borders.”

Ms McLeish has joined a number of protests on the steps of state parliament, standing with Victorians who are furious with Labor’s massacre.

“We cannot ignore communities’ objections to culling these brumbies,” Ms McLeish said.

“The city centric Labor Government’s ignorant approach will not deliver good outcomes for the environment or for farmers.

“Abandoned carcasses that are left to rot will only serve to feed up destructive and vi-

cious pest animals, like wild dogs.

“This will increase wild dog activity and breeding, making it more difficult for farmers to protect their livestock from wild dog attacks.

“In parliamentary budget hearings recently, the Labor Government admitted that it was working towards ‘eradication (of brumbies) over the forward years’.”

An action plan outlined by Parks Victoria recommends reducing brumby populations through a combination of trapping, rehoming, and groundshooting, with a spokesperson confirming that the plan was under way.

Parks Victoria has not confirmed how many horses - if any - have been culled to date.

However, members of a local brumby preservation

group claim more than 30 carcasses have been found hidden in the Barmah National Park, with fears there may be more.

Parks Victoria have also refused to confirm whether they are behind these deaths.

Yet governmental tender documents have revealed that contractors who are employed by the government to exterminate the brumbies are required to move carcasses to hide their controversial work from public view.

Ms McLeish said that brumbies are an iconic part of Victorian High Country and of our state’s cultural identity.

“While maintaining biodiversity in Victoria’s parks is necessary, any management of brumby populations must be conducted ethically and sustainably,” she said.

FARMERS and land managers in the Mansfield Shire and across Victoria face significant impacts from invasive pest animals, whether it’s feral pigs, foxes or wild dogs.

Agriculture Victoria biosecurity manager established invasive animals Jason Wishart says these pests degrade farmland, prey on livestock and native animals, compete for food, water and habitat, damage crops, pasture and infrastructure, and cause environmental damage.

“To manage these pests and their impacts, land managers need an integrated pest animal management program, using best practice tools and techniques, and implemented in coordination with other local managers,” Mr Wishart said.

“Most importantly, it needs to be well timed.

“Often good pest management needs to occur before the pests become a problem, ideally timed before the breeding season.”

To help local farmers manage these pests, Agriculture Victoria with support from DELWP, is holding a field day in Whitfield on Thursday, June 23 from 10am at the Whitfield football ground to showcase the latest information and tools available to control feral pigs, foxes and wild dogs.

One of a series of four, the Pest Animal Management Expo will include presentations from Agriculture Victoria, DELWP, Parks Victoria, Victoria Police, Landcare, CMAs, NSW Local Land Services and Buchan Bush Nursing Association.

There will be pest management organisations and suppliers with information and demonstrations on trapping, baiting and fencing.

Victorian feral pig co-ordinator Sam Armstrong will also be presenting on the importance of managing feral pigs, especially given their biosecurity risk.

“Feral pigs are one of Australia’s most destructive invasive animals,” Ms Armstrong said.

“Conservative estimates put costs to agriculture at more than $100 million per year nationally.

“They are a considerable biosecurity risk to livestock with the potential to spread diseases such as African swine fever, and foot and mouth disease in the event of an outbreak.”

Answer raises more questions for Yea truck CONTRIBUTED BY THE YEA CHRONICLE PEOPLE may have noticed a large white semi-trailer which has for some years been parked in a paddock near the Alexandra turnoff on the Goulburn Valley Highway at Cathkin.

Many have wondered what it is doing there, and whether it may have run off the road.

The answer is no, with the

reason being much simpler.

It’s just been parked there by someone working in Melbourne.

There are also a number of other trucks, both in the same paddock and across the road, including two farm trucks and a fire truck.

The other trucks are just being used as part of the farming business, according to the owner of the farm.

The owner, who chose not to be named, laughed about the 113 comments which appeared on a 2021 post on the Alexandra 3714 Community News Facebook page, saying that none of them got it right.

“They certainly are fascinated by it all,” the owner said.

“They’re working out all sorts of theories... There’s nothing unusual going on, I can assure you of that.”

Many people were initially concerned that the truck had run off the road, and the police were checking it at one stage, wondering if something may have happened to the driver.

The semi-trailer has been parked in a low spot and the ground became too wet, so the farm owner recently pulled it out with a tractor.

The truck is now sharing a paddock with the tractor.

THE Jamieson and District Historical Society Inc was successful in a grant application for $3000 to the Australian Museums and Galleries Association (AMAGA).

The grant was part of the Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART) program, a $3 million program to support community cultural heritage and arts organisations in regional Australia, as they recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

The Jamieson and District Historical Society greatly appreciated the grant as lockdowns and restrictions in Victoria resulted in a considerable reduction in visitor numbers at the museum.

The resultant loss of income from door takings was 56.7 per cent.

THE Lauriston Girls School students from Howqua Campus have commenced their community service activities in Jamieson - they are in their second week and are very positive.

With activities at the primary school, the craft ladies are showing the students period handcrafts during the weekly craft meetings and the students are helping local residents with leaf raking and other domestic chores.

Peru game as big as ‘05 for Socceroos IN what could be the final match of an association with the Socceroos stretching back almost four decades, Graham Arnold can only think of one game to equal the importance of the World Cup play-off against Peru.

“The biggest game is 2005,” Arnold said of Australia’s famous play-off win over Uruguay in Sydney where he was an assistant coach to Guus Hiddink.

“I pretty much put this game alongside that.”

on Monday (0400 Tuesday AEST) would be the crowning achievement of a tenure which has increasingly come under criticism since the Socceroos’ campaign stalled last October.

Just one win from the last seven matches of the group stage of Asian qualifying cost Arnold’s team a shot at an automatic place in Qatar 2022 and had many tipping the 58-year-old would be sacked before this month’s play-off matches.

Tszyu, Charlo agree on terms for world title fight TIM Tszyu’s boxing world title shot has been locked in after the Australian agreed to terms for his fight with undisputed superwelterweight champion Jermell Charlo.

Tszyu has been the WBO’s No.1 mandatory challenger for more than a year, prompting the sanctioning body to intervene following Charlo’s victory over Brian Castano last month.

Also the holder of the WBC, IBF and WBA belts, Charlo’s win in California elevated the 32-year-old to boxing immortality as only the seventh man in the 18-year, four-belt era to claim all major straps in one division.

Now Tszyu can snatch all four at once after WBA president Paco Valcarcel confirmed the fight, which will likely happen in the United States towards the end of this year.

A time and venue must be confirmed by June 20 in what looms as a huge few months for the sport.

A high-profile match-up between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is slated for September, while Terence Crawford is finally set to fight Errol Spence Jr for the

undisputed welterweight championship later this year.

“They told us that they have an agreement and that they are looking for a date because big fights are coming and this is one of them,” Valcarcel told ESPN Knockout.

Charlo (35-1-1, 19KO) is ranked among the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

As well as his No.2 WBO ranking, Tszyu (21-0, 15KO) is also rated No.2 in the WBC and No.3 in the IBF. Tszyu has the chance to follow in the footsteps of his father Kostya, who unified the lightwelterweight division in 2001 with a second-round knockout of American Zab Judah in Las Vegas.

His promoters from No Limit Boxing are promising to “do everything” to bring his fight to Australia, but the blockbuster is almost certain to take place in the US - and possibly even at the MGM Grand where Kostya Tszyu KO’d the previously unbeaten Judah 21 years ago.

Kaufusi avoids ban, free to play Origin II QUEENSLAND star Felise Kaufusi is free to play in State of Origin II after he escaped with a fine for his elbow to the head of Sydney Roosters halfback Sam Walker.

Kaufusi has been handed a grade-one dangerous contact charge for the firsthalf incident in Melbourne’s win over the Roosters on Saturday night.

The Storm second-rower first tried to bump Walker off in a tackle, before he then appeared to drive his head into the ground as they went down.

The teenage playmaker

was taken off the field for a HIA, but was cleared of any concussion and returned in the second half.

Working in television commentary, NSW coaching advisor Greg Alexander was among those who were critical, claiming Kaufusi had deliberately driven Walker’s head down.

Had Kaufusi been handed a grade-two charge, he would have faced a minimum of two games on the sideline even with an early guilty plea.

That would have meant him missing Origin Game II for the Maroons in

Perth on June 26.

But he will instead be able to take an $1800 fine with a guilty plea, while that would grow to $2500 if he was to fight it and lose.

Kaufusi was given a twoweek ban by the NRL for a similar incident involving Parramatta’s Ryan Matterson last season.

Bomberettes shine in Bright A GRADE

Bonnie Doon 43 defeated Bright 35 Best on Court Shannon Cameron sponsored by BP Coaches Award Steph Evans sponsored by Foodworks ALTHOUGH starting with a depleted team again this week the girls were ready to go out and play hard.

Annie Byrnes joined the team for the week and slotted into the WA position like she’d been playing all year providing plenty of drive and slick passes into the goal ring to Steph Ward and Portia Keatch.

The goalers had to work hard all game against physical defenders with Portia standing strong and Steph creating lots of movement.

The new defence combination of Mia Tanner and Casey Thompson were steadfast all game.

Working together there were plenty of tips and intercepts which put major doubt in both the Bright mid courters and goalers.

The ball the was moved easily out of defence with the help of Steph Evans in WD and Shannon Cameron, who once again smashed out the whole game in C. Not only providing great direction and talk across the court but combining effortlessly with Annie.

With Shannon’s composure in the C and hard work by the whole team across the court, the girls drew well ahead in the last quarter to come away with a great win.

This makes it three wins in a row heading into a well deserved break with the bye before meeting Whorouly.

B GRADE

Bonnie Doon 50 defeated Bright 41 Best on court: Meagan Doeven sponsored by BP Coaches Award: Natalie Taylor sponsored by Bonnie Doon Pub WITH chillingly cold conditions, the idea of warming up seemed like a mission impossible, however, right from the first whistle we knew the local girls weren’t going to be an easy beat so we warmed up pretty quickly and were made to work hard from start to finish.

With a few outs on the day saw a few changes to the line-up.

Maddie moved into WD and filled the role perfectly with tight body on body defence and backup to Nat by finding the balance and swapping to pick up a loose player when required.

Meagan Doeven in GD, with her enthusiasm and determination was fantastic bringing the ball out of defence and transiting down the court.

Megs combined so well with Cass McCormack who is ever so reliable, poised and smart with match play which in turn enabled the defenders to place immense

were a bit nervous but not for long with Emmeline stepping into GD. The game started nice and easy with the attack end working the ball from centre into the ring for Grace Revell in GS and Chloe Cash in GA. Our defenders worked exceptionally well together getting intercepts and rebounds, sticking tight to their player, turning the ball over for our team.

Second quarter we saw Poppy Seja into WA with Tara Murray in C, who both worked the ball onto the ring and did some amazing feeds to our shooters.

Our defensive end stayed the same with Charlotte Atherton in GK working consistently getting rebounds, resulting in more goals for Bonnie Doon.

Third quarter we had some changes with Tahlia Browning in C and Poppy in WD, who worked amazingly together alongside Emmeline Evans in GD, these three girls worked phenomenally together getting tips and gains, holding pressure, making it harder for Bright to score.

In the fourth quarter we smashed it out with Tara Murray in C and Casey Hearmon back in WA, Grace and Chloe putting up more and more shots without a hassle.

Charlotte Atherton went into GD for the first time this season, absolutely crushing it.

The enthusiasm throughout the game continued right until that final buzzer.

The score in the end being 6021, Bombers finishing 39 goals up.

An amazing game overall, seniors cheering for us the whole way, in the end it was a great day with all netballers taking home a win.

UNDER 15S

Some golden connections were relived with Jess Harris in WA and Nat Taylor in C. Jess Harris was so dominant in the WA role.

So clever, explosive, with timely leads creating space to work the ball onto the ring and perfect feeds into our goalers Jess Armstrong in GA and Allison Colyer in GS. Armstrong makes it look so effortlessly, she is also deceptively quick and creates so much space to allow Soupie to set up controlled and strong holds as well as a terrific link with mid courters to guide the ball down into the goal ring.

Goalers combined well with strong accuracy.

It was a great win beating the local girls on their home turf.

Although we worked hard all game it did at times feel like we were only in 2nd or 3rd gear, so there is still plenty of room to step it up a notch.

Which is a very exciting proposition.

Big thanks to Tahlia Browning for sitting on the bench.

Bonnie Doon 51 defeated Bright 35 Best on court: Narelle Seymour sponsored by BP Coaches Award: Hannah Sheahan sponsored by Mansfield Coffee Merchant THE girls took a long trip to Bright and were determined to get the win for Cass Turner’s 100th game.

Both teams in the first quarter were a little unsettled and turnovers were happening for both teams.

Going into the second quarter changes were made and Ali Howie put consistent pressure over the mid court, creating turnovers for the attack end to increase their score.

Narelle Seymour in GK was as ever consistent with her attack on the ball, sending the ball back down to the attack end over and over again.

Amy Clapham and Leith Mousey were finding great space in both goal circle pockets.

Michelle and Chrissy were doing their best to finish off the team’s hard work in the goal circle.

Bonnie Doon increased their

lead going into the half time break.

The third quarter saw Cass Turner and Hannah Sheehan work hard on their body on body pressure and as a result kept Bright’s scoring opportunities low.

The last quarter Bonnie Doon knew they had a great lead, however, wanted to maintain this gap and push out the last quarter.

Cass finished the game in goal attack, winning in style for her 100th.

A big thank you to Poppy Seja for another outstanding effort stepping up to senior netball to help out.

UNDER 17S

Unfortunately, with Erin being out for another week, under 17s

Bonnie Doon 37 defeated Bright 11 Best on court: Emmerson Keatch sponsored by Mansfield Holiday Letting Coaches Award: Grace Timmers sponsored by Walsh’s Gas IT was a cold start in Bright for the U15 girls but that didn’t stop Doon from taking home a good win.

We went strong with the shooters Cobie McCormack and Stella Brakels scoring a total of 37 goals by the end of the game.

The attackers Demi Murray, Amy Cash and Tilly Thornton did an amazing job not letting the ball get through the centre third and taking it back to our awesome shooters.

The defenders Emmerson Keatch, Tori Morgan, Grace Timmers and Gemma Revell fought hard to keep the ball from moving towards the ring and only letting Bright score 11 goals throughout the whole game.

Using techniques such as the wall and the box made it much easier for the mid courters and defenders to get intercepts when it was the opposition’s ball.

It was a very strong game played by all of the girls and the team will surely be ready to take on the rest of the season and hopefully finals.

by Cafe 41 IN what was a very crisp Mansfield winter’s day the girls had big intentions to redeem themselves from round one against Euroa.

With constant battle between the two teams with consistent turnovers on both ends, unfortunately Euroa ran away with the scoreboard in the first half.

However, the Eagles continued to fight for the ball, the mid court worked hard on explosive drives off the line and small sharp movements to carry the ball through to the goalers who were moving well and were determined in the ring.

We had lots of opportunities defensively to successfully showcase some zones the girls have been working hard on at training.

We will continue to explore and implement these at training to come out for the second half of the season firing.

Great to see B res and the junior sides getting some wins on the board, we are eager to follow suit.

B RESERVE

Mansfield 69 defeated Euroa 27 Best on Court sponsored by Home@Alpine - Robbie Robinson Coaches Award sponsored by Mansfield Golf Club - Leonie Berry IN the first round of the 2022 season Mansfield B Reserve went down to the Euroa side by a couple of goals.

Playing them for the second time this week gave us the chance to measure our improvement through the season.

And improve we have.

This week we had our whole regular side on court.

Michelle Kain and Sue Dolling in goals, Stacey Doig, Leonie Berry and Alison Eslake playing through the centre court, with Caroline Trenfield and Robbie Robinson working together in defence.

We were also lucky to have Isobel and Sarah Anderson back with us this week - semi-local young guns who play with us whenever they can be here for weekends.

The girls are versatile athletes and swap in and out of any court position needed to provide an injection of energy and to rest other players.

The whole side was excited for the game this week and hit the

court on fire.

We were able to outscore the Magpies 24-4 in the first quarter - setting us up for a really strong game.

The second term was the opposite.

We lost our momentum and dropped heads a little.

Luckily, some changes, encouragement and steady advice from coach Mich at half time settled the team again.

We came back out and won the second half convincingly to walk away with a 69-27 victory.

A huge win for our side and a clear indicator that we are building each week and striving to be strong contenders in the finals.

So exciting - go Eagles.

UNDER 17S

Mansfield 43 defeated Euroa 36 THIS week’s game taking on Euroa was a special one, as it was our first win of the season.

We came into the game with high hopes and great confidence, as we knew we could achieve the goals we set prior to the game.

We ended training on a great note, focusing on our team bonding and being more aware of us as individuals with capabilities.

The first quarter we started strong with Jamie Davis and Jess Dolling smashing out 13 goals, with the help of the defence and attacking side.

Second quarter we started to drop off a bit, but it wasn’t long

until we picked ourselves back up, scoring nine for our side and Euroa scoring 12.

Third quarter we stayed strong and continued using everything we knew from training and taking it into this game.

We started working more as a team and supporting each and every player, which led to Jamie and Tahlia scoring a total of 10 followed by Euroa’s side scoring a total of eight goals.

In the fourth quarter we knew this was it, this was our chance to continue playing strong and finish off on a good note, whether that was a win or a loss.

Having this mindset led us to scoring 11 goals for our side and 10 goals for Euroa’s side, ending the game with Mansfield 43 defeating Euroa 36.

We all worked super hard to achieve what we did and getting us this win.

A huge thank you to Teana and Latoya Wards for being amazing and supportive coaches, helping us improve more and more each week.

On behalf of the MFNC we send the best wishes and luck to Latoya as she will be undergoing surgery as of Tuesday, we really hope we made you proud and it gives you positive thoughts which will lead into your recovery journey.

UNDER 15S

Mansfield 32 defeated Euroa 26 Best on - Amelia Clydesdale Coaches award - Eliza Doig

THIS week the under 15 girls stepped out on the court hungry for a win and ready to beat Euroa.

After a slow first quarter the girls went back to basics, looking at their angled drives and passing to space.

With lots of hard work from the midcourters, and some great late shots by Annie Thompson in GS, the girls were able to claw their way back, and were up by one goal at half time.

During the third quarter the girls worked hard to keep up with Euroa.

Jasper Robinson, Tasia Ciarma and Harper Anderson were strong in defence, getting lots of rebounds and not resting until the ball was out of the opposition’s end.

Eliza Doig and Ava Mahoney worked tirelessly to move the ball down the court and into the goals, however, at three-quarter time the girls were trailing Euroa.

The last quarter was action packed.

Emma Witkiss and Molly Judge worked well throughout the midcourt, opening up space and feeding the ball down to goalers Remy Stevenson and Amelia Clydesdale, who were displaying brilliant teamwork and movement in the ring.

The girls fought hard until the very last minute and came away with a well-deserved win.

They’ve got plenty to work on at training this week, however, and are looking forward to playing Kyabram next Saturday.

Nail biter for U17s at Myrtleford

By CHRIS STONEY IT was always going to be a big challenge for our undefeated under 17 boys travelling to Myrtleford to play the also undefeated Saints at their home ground.

With the sun finally shining and a ground that was remarkably in good condition after a long wet week the boys were well up and about and excited for the game.

As expected it was a fierce and tough contest right from the start with the footy going from end to end with neither team able to break through for a score.

In the end it was big Oscar Clelland who broke the deadlock with a magnificent goal that really got all the boys around him.

The euphoria was short lived, however, with Myrtleford kicking two goals and three points to take control of the game.

The second turned into a dour contest with Myrtleford getting the game on their terms and putting our backline under enormous pressure; Riley Hall at centre half back played the game of his life and repelled attack after attack with his high marking and contested

possession work and Harry Purcell, Kai Longstaff and the tough brothers River and Hunter were keeping Mansfield in the contest.

Nick Taylor, who has become ‘Mr Reliable’ in the forward pocket, read the ball off the pack and kicked our only goal for the quarter with Myrtleford kicking another three goals to lead by 21 points at half time.

Even though it didn’t show on the scoreboard and us having a few injury concerns it felt like we were still in the contest.

In the third we started showing some glimpses of

how we like to play but it was Myrtleford and the way they set up behind the ball that still held sway.

A J Thomson was playing a magnificent game taking big marks all over the ground and he kicked our only goal for the quarter with the opposition adding another three to lead by a game high 32 points at three quarter time.

Coach Flea looked to the positives at three quarter time and encouraged the boys to stick to our running and quick ball movement and it will stick eventually.

This is exactly what hap-

pened in the last; our runners in Jack Marks and Will Friday really came into the game and we got our exciting fast ball movement game going using the fat side of the ground better and running in numbers.

Cody Azzopardi, Jim Christopher and Dan Bruno were playing well in defence and Riley Northcote really lit up the ground with a number of magnificent efforts - one resulting in the first goal of the quarter closely followed by Oscar Clelland’s second for the match.

We had the momentum but unfortunately couldn’t

capitalise on the scoreboard with six points most of which could easily have been goals.

We ended up losing the game by 16 points with Myrtleford only having one more scoring shot than us and with a number of good players to come back we look forward to playing them again on our home track later in the season.

Next Sunday we host the Tigers at home.

Wet weather tennis for midweek competitions

By RHONDA CARPENTER HEAVY rain over the weekend meant the women’s daytime winter comp was washed out again last Monday.

The men’s autumn competition was washed out again on Tuesday night, but the women braved the wintry conditions on Wednesday night.

On Monday night the Mansfield Tennis Association committee met in the warmth of the Mansfield Hotel for their monthly meeting.

Matters related to club operations and facilities improvements were discussed.

Present for the meeting were: Robert Williams, Deb Mims, Jemma Purcell, Rachel Parsons, Danny Cahill, Bob Carpenter, Rhonda Carpenter, Brendan Grant and Tim Ross.

It was cold and wet on Wednesday night when the women took the courts.

Six teams braved the conditions to smash it out in the rain.

The autumn competition has been marred with some unusually wet weather and a touch of COVID here and there.

However, it didn’t stop the continuous laughter that could be heard ringing out from the courts.

Wednesday night saw Chloe Rekers’ aggression and commitment shine.

In the pouring rain she dived for the ball, sliding

on her stomach through the puddles.

She had Jemma Purcell and Kim Marsden ducking for cover as she destroyed them at the net.

The score was so tight it was frequently forgotten.

Kelly Purcell was a late addition to the competition,

playing her first match on the final night of the season.

She produced unwavering serves and steered her team through some very competitive tennis.

Cassie Daykin hit the ball low and hard making life difficult for Ilena Meek and Kylie Warren.

Hannah Dolling and Jane Swinburne toughed it out against one of Mansfield’s most successful female tennis players of all time, Karyn Fraser.

Karyn combined with Lisa Morgan, arguably the strongest singles player of the competition.

Karyn and Lisa made easy work of Jane and Hannah in the doubles, however, tables turned in the singles matches where Hannah and Jane specialised in wet weather play.

The season has been extended due to popular demand and to allow Kelly Purcell a second match.

MATCH REVIEW Bombers get some biffo in Bright ROUND

By SHAUN McMAHON THE Bonnie Doon Bombers travelled to Bright this past weekend to take on the united blue brigade.

The Mountain Men proved too strong for the Bombers seniors, who went down swinging in the slick conditions.

Bright came out of the gate swiftly, kicking the first two goals of the day.

The Bombers replied with a sharp snap from James Law on the boundary line and a running drop punt from Joel Sanford to even things up.

Bright had the final say in the first term, before a good bit of biffo in the middle followed in the second quarter.

Bright kept their noses ahead until a pair of straight kicks from the Bombers edged them in front.

Strong tackling, straight

kicking and pressure on the ball saw the Bombers maintain their lead at the turn, with Bright nipping at their heels all the way.

Dynamic forwards kept Bright in the hunt, and the game ebbed and flowed with momentum shifts all day.

A pair of emphatic goals from Bright - one from nearly 50 out in front and another 40 metre check side from the boundary put the home side in front.

The Bombers fired again, as they’d done all day, but it wasn’t enough when the final siren sounded.

They went down fighting in what was a tough and tight game in even tougher conditions.

Bright 11.6 (72) defeated Bonnie Doon 8.9 (57).

The young Bombers reserves also had a loss to Bright’s seconds, going down 98-18.

Eagles under 14s travel to Myrtleford

By BRENDAN PIGDON AN enthusiastic team of footballers travelled to RC McNamara Reserve at Myrtleford to take on the Saints.

Mansfield’s boys started out with gusto, scoring the first goal very quickly through great efforts from Eddy Morphett, Harry Craddock and Charlie Dobson.

The forward line was kept busy most of the game, with Chris Caminos, Ethan Pigdon and Jaxon McCormack all kicking truly.

By half time the young Eagles were in control of the game due to fantastic team play.

Noah Pigdon, Oscar Guppy and Jackson Day all kicked their first goal for the season as did Hamish Yencken.

Liam Smith, Max Payne and Will Northcote played an outstanding brand of football to see Mansfield come out winners by 97 points.

Mansfield Football and Netball Club cap award was awarded to Ben Baklis, O’Malley’s Pizza award went to Oscar Guppy and Max Payne received the Ben Purday Bricklaying award.

Next weeks game sees Mansfield Eagles take on the Wangaratta Tigers at HP Barr Reserve, Sunday, June 19.

Two strikes ie 2nd week in a row that Tuesday has been washed out, albeit I did see out of my back window Brad and Taki still playing with the course to themselves.

Thursday, Stableford.

One division: 1st - Kyle Bridgeman 38 pts (h/c 3); 2nd - Martin Slack 36 pts C/B (h/c 13); 3rd - Josh Foots also 36 pts (h/c 14).

A very good week for Kyle as you will see later in the article.

Exceptional round in trying conditions playing to a one handicap, probably worth +1 or +2 in summer conditions.

Well done Martin on your second this may have helped in your comp within a comp, ie the weekly monied clash with long term friends Maurie, Alan and Davie Mc. Josh has cleaned up some money regularly lately, an exciting young ‘leftie’ who will

be lighting up the scoreboard hopefully for several decades.

A good pedigree has the lad with mother Lyn being a former golf champion and now ‘bowls champ’, plus a talented father.

Saturday - Par, one division.

A small field of 31 participants, not surprising with a home ‘footy’ match.

Many golfers played early to enable them time to support our Eagles.

1st - Phil Conway +2 (h/c 11); 2nd - Justin Odd, minus 1C/B (h/c 24); 3rd - Stephen O’Sullivan -1 (h/c 11).

An exceptional round by Phil our past captain and current N/E golf president.

Plus 2 is an excellent score anytime let alone at this time of the year. Congratulations on your win and playing to single figures.

Justin is a likeable, ever smiling young man with a high handicap and a long hit.

A wonderful recipe for being in the ‘teens’ before too long with many prizes along the way.

Stephen we do not know a lot about yet.

No doubt with his impressive 11 handicap we will be seeing his name regularly.

Nice to see Adrian Cheer fill fourth place.

Still a learner and new to the

game he has the markings of a very handy golfer.

Adrian is also co-commentator for the Eagles home matches and the Friday 8 - 10am sports show with golf’s chairman and all-around good guy, David Octigan.

Now for the big news.

Sunday’s final of the Bill Reardon perpetual trophy and ‘Honour Board’ handicap event between Alex Scherini and Kyle Bridgeman, matchplay was the criterium over 27 holes.

Like gladiators or fencing - for most of the way ‘parry and thrust’ was exciting to watch as each contestant held the lead only to give it away again.

Kyle had to give Alex seven shots in the 27 holes.

Finally, after 26 holes Kyle succeeded in winning his first ‘board’ event.

Alex was also a worthy finalist who definitely had his chances of glory.

An enjoyable final board event prior to the October club championships.

THE final round of competition was last week, leaving the way for the finals series now.

While this week will see the semi finals, next week will be the preliminary finals of both Sections 1 and 2 on Monday night and the grand final on Friday night.

As an added bonus, before the grand final matches begin there will be a visit from a professional coach and some elite junior squash players.

Raj Nanda is Australia’s national juniors coach and former professional squash player reaching number 38 in the world.

There will be free coaching sessions from Raj and exhibition games with some of Victoria’s best junior players to show our juniors how it’s done.

There will also be a free sausage sizzle for the kids afterwards.

So any kids that want some coaching or anybody that wants to watch some good squash, all are welcome.

That’s not all; after all that will be the break-up for the junior squash squad and their presentations.

Lady golfers brave the cold

By LINDA TERRY ANOTHER cold wintry week.

The course was holding up well on Wednesday, however, despite copious amounts of rain recently 19 of us managed a stableford round without getting wet from above (some, however, did get wet feet).

Shelly Comerford proved to handle the conditions the best, winning with 31 points.

Marion Foster was only one shot behind for runner up with 30 points and Robyn Bridgewater 3rd with 29 on a countback to Lesley Anderson who got a line ball along with Sheryl Sargent (27).

Nearest the pins went to Gayle Wells, Sheryl Sargent and Marion Mitchell.

You had to be keen to venture out on Saturday and this little author from Tolmie wasn’t about to be one of them.

Just six ladies braved it to play par no less.

Deserved winner based on courage if not the score, was Glenis Skinner with -6 from Jackie Smithwick -8.

Millie Cumming claimed a nearest the pin on the 16th.

Well done ladies.

This Wednesday is the final qualifying round of the Silver Spoon and the second round of our Veteran comp.

On Thursday a team is heading to Albury to play in their annual Bowl.

Local runners lead tour de force in Yea

By EMMA OLIVER ON Monday, June 7, 27 students from Mansfield Primary School, 11 from St Mary’s and six from Mansfield Steiner School headed to the Yea Golf Course to compete in the Divisional Cross Country.

Seymour, Cathedral, Euroa and Mansfield all had students competing on the day, with each shire represented by their top placegetters from their District Cross Country.

Local students dominated the event with Mansfield kids taking out first place in five of the six categories, with 25 students continuing on in the competition to the next level.

“It was a cold and wet day, but all students ran hard and pushed themselves to their

max,” said Jen Driessen, the sport and physical education coordinator at Mansfield Primary.

“Well done to all Mansfield Primary and Mansfield district runners.”

Peter Coffey from St Mary’s reiterated the sentiment, commending all the students on putting in a magnificent effort.

The top 12 place-getters in each age group will now go on to compete at regionals which will be held in Benalla on Friday, June 17.

In the nine and ten year old girls age group, running for Mansfield Primary School, Zali Hopkins placed first, Rachel Mercieca second and Sophie Snell eleventh.

showing, with Zac Borg coming in at second, Angus Vasey third, Will Hewitt fourth, Cooper Hoebergen fifth and Levi McCoombe at eleventh.

Callum Williams from Mansfield Steiner School came in at seventh and will also be heading to Benalla to contest the regionals.

Josh Taylor from St Mary’s made it into the top three for the category, placing third in the race.

A huge congratulations to the whole Mansfield contingent securing 25 of the available 72 spots at the regionals.

Many students will now have their eye on finishing strongly in Benalla and continuing on to state.

Eagles swooped by Magpies in Queen’s Birthday clash

THE Eagles seniors were beaten by a superior Euroa Magpies line-up at the Queen’s Birthday long weekend clash last Saturday.

Playing in slippery conditions at the rec reserve in front of a home crowd, the Eagles were probably more interested in celebrating club legend Jimmy Herridge’s 250th game than our royal monarch’s 96th birthday.

But it wasn’t to be, with the Magpies swooping in right from the start to take the reins.

Euroa’s seniors didn’t let up for the whole game, starting with a bumper four goal first term and solid two goal second to lead the Eagles by 31 points at the break.

Single contributions from Patty Marks and Cam Arnold weren’t enough to wake up the Eagles and the Magpies flew away with a six goal third quarter.

They ultimately cruised to a comfortable 10 goal win.

Mansfield Eagles seniors 2.7 (19) defeated by Euroa Magpies seniors 12.11 (83).

Best for Mansfield were Dirk Koenen, Lachie Christopher, Jimmy Herridge, Jono Aujard and Patrick Marks.

Colby Croxford-Demasi, Joshua Stefanutti, Thomas Sheahan and Jack Kirley were best for the Eagles.
