No more lakeside serenity

By EMMA OLIVER ANNUAL site holders at the Mansfield Lakeside Ski Village have been served with eviction notices in a surprise move that has 120 families either forced to relocate or otherwise lose their investment.

According to the eviction email the new owners, Wallace Land Holdings, have come to the decision that they are no longer in a position to continue operating the caravan park long-term and are

A representative for the displaced site holders who chose to remain anonymous said they are not sure whether the residential village would be a more permanent proposal, or if it is a refurbishment of the site allowing new clientele to buy into the park.

Council has confirmed that no planning applications have as yet been lodged for further development at the Howes Creek Road site.

However, the 15 acre caravan park - which is currently on bore water with a septic system - has recently been approved to transition to town water and sewerage through Goulburn Valley Water.

In what site holders have deemed a blindside, they were advised on July 1 that their current occupation licence had concluded the day before on June 30 and would not be renewed.

In emails received at 6pm on the Friday night, all site holders were advised on the impending closure of the caravan park.

Going forward Wallace Land

Holdings have offered a limited site occupation licence, with annual fees going up between $800 and $1000, with an additional bond now requested from all site holders.

Those who do not sign the conditional contracts will have their presence on-site deemed unlawful.

Hayley makes the cover of Slam magazine

ON A ROLL: Hayley Wilson is the first female to grace the cover of Slam skateboarding magazine.

MANSFIELD’S Hayley Wilson has become the first woman to be on the cover of skateboarding magazine Slam, together with an eight page interview, photographic spread and pull out poster.

Hayley recalls that she received her first Slam subscription at the age of 14 and said to her mum Catriona Wilson, “One day I would like to be on the cover of Slam”.

Fast forward six years and a lot of hard work, and falls, and she has already achieved her goal.

The article shows that contest skating is only one part of Hayley’s pathway as a professional skateboarder - she combines contest with filming video parts for her sponsors and interviews for magazines and other media platforms.

In addition to gracing the cover, Hayley’s journey to date is presented honestly and beautifully in an eight page spread in which she was interviewed by skateboard great

Anthony Mapstone.

As is seen on the cover, there were also some incredible photographs captured by notable action photographer Paul Battlay.

The cover features Hayley facing a two storey drop and she admitted it was no walk in the park, but she “locked in the noseslide and rolled away” and it became the first ever female Slam cover.

For the younger audience, Hayley is in a full lift-out poster and is also representing one of her sponsors, Fast Times Skate Shops, in a full page advertisement.

Anthony Mapstone begins his interview by saying: “As well as being a great human, Hayley’s skateboarding has made a strong impact on a local and international level, all before she has even turned 21.

“Let’s see where this kid from Mansfield can go this year and further into the future.

“I’m sure the tear she is on will continue once this old head is long gone.”

BOOK lovers of all ages will no longer be charged overdue fees at Mansfield Library and all libraries across the High Country Library Network, as local libraries adopt a growing international trend, though library fines for junior members were removed in July 2019.

“This has been a hugely successful initiative, and we are very pleased to now be able to offer the same service to everyone,” said Mayor James Tehan.

Historically, library services have charged fees under three key assumptions - fines bring materials back faster, generate revenue for the library and teach responsibility.

In fact, there is growing evidence to show that these assumptions are untrue, and that fines tend to deter people from accessing the vital services provided by libraries.

“Equality is core to the provision of services at the library,” said Cr Tehan. v “Our aim is for more people to borrow and access the many services offered by the library.”

Instead of accruing overdue fines, members will not be able to borrow or order items if they have overdue items on their card.

“Once fines are removed, more books get returned,” said Angela Savage, chief executive officer of Public Libraries Victoria.

NO MORE FINES: Overdue penalties will be a thing of the past at Mansfield Library.

“And people who might otherwise stay away (often our residents that benefit most from the service) are encouraged to return to the library.”

Charges will still apply for lost or dam-

aged items, and overdue fines accrued up until June 30, 2022 will remain on members’ cards.

The whole High Country Library Network will cease to issue overdue fines from July 1.

From page 1 Site holders have been given two options regarding this with a short-term licence agreement finishing up on October 31 this year, and a longer term option which concludes on June 30, 2023 with the closure of the park.

Wallace Land Holdings have stated that after this date the park will no longer operate.

The email reads: “It is now imperative that you make plans to relocate or sell your dwelling.”

Prior to the closure notice there had been no indication that leases would not be renewed.

“We were concerned when the park sold in January to an investment company with overseas connections,” said a spokesperson for the site holders.

“However, we were repeatedly assured via phone calls and emails that the park was not to be closed, rather improved with upgraded amenities.”

As recently as May 19, Wallace Land Holdings informed site holders that they had just employed a new management team, who had relocated to the shire to manage Lakeside, and in the company’s own words were ‘working together, to bring their vision of Lakeside to life’.

Site holders were under the impression

that this vision was to enhance current facilities, align all residents and ensure agreements were up to date, according to documentation from the beginning of May. The new owners even stated that all previous commitments and payment details of the tenants were to remain the same unless otherwise agreed in writing.

“Less than two months later the company has done a complete backflip,” said the spokesperson.

“This has devastated site holders.

“We all understand that we don’t own the dirt and that we are effectively renting the land from the landowner through a lease agreement.

“However, it is the level of deceit that the majority of site holders are objecting to, and the fact that we have been given little to no time to prepare for this, unless we sign a conditional contract.

“We’re feeling shattered.

“The majority of us are young families and this is our dream, and it’s been effectively crushed.

“For some, I truly believe this may be that breaking point after the last couple of years.”

Though not permanent residents, the 120 families who have caravans or cabins at the park over the years, have a strong affiliation to the region.

Late last year - just before the park was

sold - sites were still changing hands, with the median price for new caravans between $40,000 and $50,000, and some cabins commanding more than double this amount.

And just eight days before site holders were told that their leases would not be renewed and the eviction notices served, another family had bought a van at the park and were celebrating their new investment.

These families are all now looking to relocate, which for some is not an easy process, considering the modifications they have made to their vans and cabins, and the additional cost to do so.

“There are limited to no available sites at Bonnie Doon, Peppin Point, Eildon and even Alexandra - and no annual sites on offer in Mansfield township - so we now have 120 families with nowhere local to go,” said a spokesperson for the site holders.

Owners of the Mansfield Lakeside Ski Village, Wallace Land Holdings, declined to comment on the matter when contacted, with site holders also struggling to clarify the situation with the company not responding to calls or emails.

A committee was formed at a site meeting held at Lakeside on the weekend with 100 site holders in attendance.

The group is currently seeking legal advice.

Artist Aimee calls Mansfield Shire home

By EMMA OLIVER AS part of last week’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Mansfield Shire Council hosted the Luruk-in Art Exhibition in the council foyer, featuring work by proud Taungurung women Aimee McCartney and her mother Terrie Stewart.

Aimee works on canvas, her paintings bright and full of texture, whereas Terrie focuses primarily on weaving, creating everything from baskets to earrings and wall hangings.

Both mother and daughter work fulltime, Terrie with indigenous people in the criminal justice system and Aimee in the Australian defence force.

Creating art is very much their passion, and to be recognised locally on Taungurung land - in a place that holds such fond and personal memories - was a fitting tribute.

“We were incredibly excited when the council approached us to exhibit our work,” said Aimee.

“To be able to showcase our culture during NAIDOC Week in an area that gets such a lot of visitation and traction - especially during the school holidays was an amazing honour.

“And it was fabulous to be able to create an exhibition that incorporated different elements of indigenous art, displaying my mother’s traditional work alongside my more contemporary aspect.”

The title of the exhibition ‘Luruk-in’ means ‘your sister’, which is also the name of Aimee’s business, creating contemporary Aboriginal art and commissions.

Her recent collaboration with the Merchant Coffee Roasters was under the Luruk-in banner, with Aimee’s artwork, ‘Yaawinbu Yananinon’, gracing the label of a limited edition Australian blend.

The release of the blend was timed to coincide with NAIDOC Week and will be available throughout July, with $5 from every kilogram sold going towards Djirra, an Aboriginal community controlled organisation.

EXHIBITION: Daughter and mother power duo Aimee McCartney and Terrie Stewart recently had their work on display in the Mansfield Shire Council foyer as part of NAIDOC Week.

The label artwork has a distinctively local subject matter, representing the geographical area of Mansfield from a bird’s eye view, incorporating culturally significant areas such as the mountains, rivers and lakes.

Lake Eildon in particular holds special significance for Aimee, as she spent her formative years holidaying in the region and at Bonnie Doon, spending days on the water on the family’s boat.

Although Aimee grew up in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, much of her childhood was spent visiting the shire and surrounds, catching up with family and participating in cultural ceremonies.

“As a young child and then later at school and into university, I would always return to Taungurung country,” Aimee said.

“That reminder of place and country, and the knowledge sharing - this region has always been home.

“I may not physically live in Mansfield, however, there is very much a connection to this country, through our song lines and dreaming stories, and cultural heritage.

“I am drawn to it, and it calls me home.”

Delatite Winery in the running for two major tourism awards DELATITE Winery is thrilled to be nominated as a finalist in two categories in the 2022 Restaurant and Catering Association awards for Victoria and Tasmania.

The awards for Best Tourism Restaurant and Best Restaurant in a Winery follow the opening of their spectacular new cellar door and dining room in June, last year.

Managing director David Ritchie said that they have been very pleased by the response of both visitors and locals to the building and the possibilities it offers for wine and food.

“We always knew we had a fabulous site but didn’t have a building that took advantage of that,” Mr Ritchie said.

A big congratulations to show director Karen Pirie, her hard working and creative production crew, and the equally talented cast.

The last two wins came for Seussical the Musical, and Jekyll and Hyde.

The Great ARTdoors - artists selected EIGHT artists have been appointed to create art installations along the Great Victorian Rail Trail with art location sites also being selected.

The next phase of the project will see the detailed design for each of the sites finalised in preparation for the installations work to begin.

The works are expected to be installed before the end of April 2023.

“As the project progresses, we will be providing updates to the community via The Loop and on social media, which will include some sneak peeks of the works as they develop,” Cr Carpenter said.

Cr Carpenter said the project is aimed at attracting more visitors to the rail trail and to support communities along the trail by building its reputation as a premier tourist attraction.

“The rail trail is an important part of the tourism offering across the three shires and it is exciting to see the project reach this key milestone,” she said.

The $1.2 million Great ARTdoors Project is a partnership between Murrindindi, Mansfield and Mitchell shire councils, funded through the Victorian Government Regional Tourism Investment Fund Stimulus Round, as part of the COVID-19 tourism stimulus package through Regional Development Victoria.

Mansfield Shire mayor James Tehan said he was pleased with the community consultation process.

“The seven locations have been selected from more than 50 suggested sites identified during the community consultation phase,” Cr Tehan said.

The three artists to work on sites in the Mansfield Shire are Tai Snaith (Woodfield), Cara Johnson (Bonnie Doon) and Robbie Rowlands (Maindample).

All three artists have extensive artistic backgrounds.

Tai Snaith is an Australian artist and writer with a broad and generous practice ranging from painting and ceramics to curating, conducting conversations and broadcasting.

Tai has exhibited widely in both artist run and commercial spaces since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2002.

She has been awarded the Australia Council for the Arts Tokyo studio residency and numerous state and federal project grants.

Cara Johnson’s craft-based works interrogate tensions and narratives surrounding land use.

She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (First Class Hons) at RMIT Uni-

versity in 2016, where she is also a current PhD Candidate and sessional lecturer.

Recent solo exhibitions include Understory at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria and Overlay at The Santos Museum of Economic Botany.

Cara also exhibits widely in group shows, nationally and internationally.

Robbie Rowlands is an artist based in Melbourne.

Through his practice, he explores everyday environments and materials to create immersive sculptural and media-based outcomes.

With a focus on working specifically with each site and community, his outcomes develop unique awareness and connections to subjects that are often overlooked.

With a career spanning more than 20 years, his practice has traversed local and international landscapes, with significant public outcomes.

Local planning timeframes improving COUNCIL has announced significant improvements have been made within their statutory planning department because of a review undertaken in early 2020.

They’re claiming nearly 90 per cent of permits are now reportedly issued within the required State Government timeframes, which is a 30 per cent increase on the previous year.

Mansfield Shire mayor James Tehan said that the statutory planning team had been working hard to improve timeframes.

“Town planning was identified in community satisfaction surveys and through various forms of feedback as an area that needed improvement,” said Cr Tehan.

“The team has made great strides so far and things aren’t slowing down.

“There are an increasing number of applications each month and ensuring turnaround times that are consistent with community expectations continue to be a priority.

“We know our community is interested in how Mansfield is growing, and we are working hard to make sure the things we value most about Mansfield are maintained while this growth continues.

ON THE PLAN: Council says building permits are now going through much faster.

“To do this, we’re investing staff and resources in our strategic planning program.

“As well as processing an increasing number of planning applications, council has adopted the Commercial and Industrial Land Use Strategy, the Mansfield Planning Strategy and progressed seven different amendments to the planning scheme through State Government processes.”

Council said the amend-

ments are intended to protect amenity as the Mansfield Shire population grows, reduce red tape and remove redundant planning overlays across the municipality.

They include: · implementation of the Station Precinct Master Plan to allow for commercial activation; · application of the Township Housing and Approaches Strategy;

· rezoning of land for residential development in Stockmans Rise; and · creating new industrial development land to help provide employment opportunities.

Census data compared ‘apples with oranges’ DUE to a misinterpretation of data presented on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, census figure comparisons reported in last week’s paper did not accurately reflect the area’s growth.

The data for 2021, while correct, was reflective of the Mansfield Local Government Area (LGA).

The 2016 data presented, while also accurate, was more specifically for Mansfield township and surrounds.

A number of previously quoted statistics remain consistent, in particular those compared with state and national averages.

However, a more ‘apples with apples’ comparison still shows a noticeably upward trajectory for the shire’s growth, albeit with significantly smaller spikes in some important areas.

Differences should be noted with Mansfield LGA’s population, now sitting at 10,178, up from 8584 in 2016.

2660 families reside here, up from 2132 in 2016, with 6578 private dwellings compared with

the previous 5919.

The retargeted data also noted 37.5 per cent of unoccupied private dwellings versus 42.7 per cent in 2016 and current averages around 10-11 per cent across Australia.

Occupied dwellings of 62.5 per cent were significantly lower than the 89 per cent seen across the country, however, were actually five per cent higher than more comparable 2016 data.

Family households have increased approximately 2.5 per cent from 2016 data, and while volunteer data compared against state/national averages shown last week was favourable, a look at 2016 showed around a six per cent drop in current figures.

Retargeted rent, mortgage, education, vehicle, religion and health statistics remain consistent with what was previously noted, where figures were compared with state/national averages or remain similar.

The Mansfield Courier apologises for the previous comparison and will report on more updated data released by the ABS in October.

Solar power for the family and children’s centre THE Mansfield Family and Children’s Centre has received a new 30-kilowatt rooftop solar power system, as part of council’s plan to convert their owned and managed facilities to solar power.

The $29,380 system was installed by Greenwood Solutions and aims to have a positive environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and is estimated to reduce the centre’s electricity bills by approximately 40 per cent annually.

Mayor James Tehan said sustainable buildings were identified as a priority for the community when council asked for feedback on the Climate Action Change Plan.

“The environment and sustainability continue to be a key priority for our community and we’re listening,” said Cr Tehan.

“This is the next step in the solar project outlined in council’s Envi-

ronmental Strategy 2019-2023.

“The benefits of the solar installations are twofold.

“It creates environmental benefits while ensuring we reduce our overall operating costs into the future.”

A recent feasibility study by Rethink Sustainability determined that the centre was the next best location to install a new system due to its high energy usage compared with other council facilities, especially during the daytime when solar energy is generated.

The study also explored options for greater savings in the future by incorporating all of council’s solar assets into a Virtual Energy Network.

Council offices and some minor facilities have already been converted to solar power and there are plans to convert the Mansfield Sporting Complex and Council Depot in the future.

‘Raging bear’ convicted for punching man’s teeth out A FORMER Jamieson resident has been convicted and ordered to donate $3000 alongside attending six mandatory counselling sessions after facing assault related charges in Mansfield Magistrate’s Court.

The accused was alleged to have punched a man at a licensed High Country venue in April last year following an altercation in which he believed a friend of his was being harmed.

The victim had a tooth knocked out, and provided an impact statement to the court detailing the effects the incident had on him and his teenage son, who was dining with the victim at the time of the incident.

The victim had since sought medical attention from a dentist and specialist periodontist and was seeking a significant amount of

restitution from the accused in the form of medical bills and lost income due to time off work.

Following the incident, police interviewed the accused, who stated he had consumed three mid-strength beers prior to attending the hotel, and was on medication for anxiety and depression.

He admitted to pushing the victim off a stool and punching him because his friend was ‘going blue from a headlock’.

The accused, who described himself as a ‘raging bear’ at this point, said he had no intention of inflicting the damage he did, refused to leave the premises thereafter and was ‘gob smacked’ that they refused to serve him another beer.

He ultimately decided to leave of his own accord as he didn’t want anything further

to happen and was already in an agitated state, acknowledging that he ‘shouldn’t have argued like that’.

Police said during the interview that while the accused acknowledged most accounts, he did not appear to hold any remorse for his actions and questioned the injury of the victim.

The accused was subsequently banned from Mansfield and Jamieson licensed venues for 12 months and had complied with this direction.

The victim’s impact statement read to the court detailed the effect the incident had caused on his wellbeing, noting that he was now nervous in public areas and felt vulnerable going out to dinner.

“Within 15 minutes I’d had my teeth punched out by a stranger walking by while eating with my 15 year old son,”

the victim said.

“For me to be hit and the aggression turned towards me scares me and makes me think twice about going to dinner.

“You can change someone’s life with a single punch.”

Defence for the 53 year old accused - who’d had two cannabis matters in past and one relevant prior for being drunk in public place as a much younger man - was said to be modest and not someone who has a propensity towards violence or alcohol.

The incident was described by his defence as ‘out of character’.

Three character references provided to the court - two from high-standing locals spoke to his nature.

Defence submitted that at the time of offending the accused was going through difficulties relating to his mar-

riage separation, which had affected his mental health, which he was already struggling with due to the pandemic and extensive periods of lockdown.

The accused, who worked as a carpenter, had lost jobs due to his decision not to vaccinate, but that since his amicable separation and property sale, he was now better off financially, relocating to the Mornington Peninsula and planning to travel to Thailand for a four week wellness retreat with his children.

The presiding magistrate appeared less than impressed at the accused having no medical reason not to vaccinate but being ‘happy to put himself in an airport and travel internationally’ without it.

“Assaults in public have an impact not only on the victim but the wider public,” said the magistrate.

“Everyone expects they can go out and be safe, so speaking to the principle of general deterrence and denouncing the behaviour in this circumstance - I believe it to be serious personal offending which was described in the victim impact statement.

“My view is that it’s appropriate to convict you and place you on an adjourned undertaking with two conditions - that you donate $3000 to the Pat Cronin Foundation and provide proof and also to undertake a minimum of six sessions with a counsellor or psychologist.

“I’ve got faith and hope you won’t behave this way ever again, but you’ve still got work to do, and you’ve got the resources to make meaningful contribution to this foundation,” the magistrate concluded.

NAIDOC Week celebrations

NAIDOC Week 2022 was Mansfield Shire’s biggest yet with a week of free events throughout the town celebrating the national week of recognition.

Mansfield Shire Council partnered with Taungurung Land and Waters Council and Gadhaba Local Aboriginal Network to design and deliver the program.

NAIDOC Week celebrations commenced with an official flag raising, smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country on Sunday, July 3 with Aunty Bernadette Franklin at the Visitor Information Precinct.

This was well attended with over 70 people participating in the cleansing smoking ceremony and welcome to country from Aunty Bernadette.

This was followed by an Indigenous ingredient inspired morning tea with Megan Knapp of The Kitchen Door, featuring a special NAIDOC coffee blend from Merchant Coffee Roasters which was enjoyed by 50 guests at the MACE building.

Mayor James Tehan said NAIDOC provided the opportunity to consider how we can take action to improve relationships and recognise the importance of our cultural heritage.

“It was a privilege to speak at the official flag raising event and be part of a cel-

MP won’t contest election Ryan y cites familyy reasons for decision to end her p political career THE Euroa electorate’s first ever MP Steph Ryan has announced that she will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming state election.

The Nationals Party deputy leader made a statement explaining her decision last week.

“After a great deal of reflection, I have decided to step down as the member for Euroa at the coming state election,” Ms Ryan said.

“With a little one at home and another on the way, it is time for me to seek a job that offers greater flexibility.

“Serving my community as the first member for Euroa has been the honour of a lifetime.

“The greatest pleasure of this job has been the opportunity it has afforded me to meet every day people doing extraordinary things.

“Thanks to the talent and ingenuity of the people who call it home, our region’s future is bright.

“I am also immensely proud to have served as the deputy leader of the Nationals for the past eight years and to be the first woman in the party’s history to be elected to a leadership position, state or federal.

“I want to thank our leader Peter Walsh and my colleagues for their friendship and unwavering support over that time.

“I have always taken my duty to my electorate as my first priority.

“I believe our community deserves someone who can devote 150 per cent of their time and energy to representing them.

Successfully re-elected in 2018, Ms Ryan has served as the shadow minister for several departments while in opposition.

Most recently, Ms Ryan has served as the shadow minister for public transport and roads since February of this year.

STRATHBOGIE Shire councillor Kristy Hourigan has declared her intention to nominate for The Nationals’ preselection for the state seat of Euroa.

The Nationals are opening nominations after Steph Ryan announced her intention to retire at the coming state election.

“I am putting my hand up because I believe I can be a strong and enthusiastic voice for our region,” Ms Hourigan said.

“I love this region, the people who call it home and I am passionate about seeing our communities thrive.”

Ms Hourigan grew up in Frankston where she worked delivering training in business and human resources.

“After falling in love with Euroa, I moved with my partner Warrick and our daughter Lilly, 9, in 2017 when we bought the Euroa caravan park on the banks of Seven Creeks,” Ms Hourigan said.

“In 2018 we welcomed our second daughter Maddy who is now 4.

“When we took on the business, the park was rundown and tired.

“We have put in five years of hard work to turn it around, tripling its revenue despite the challenges of COVID lockdowns and the Euroa floods.

“We have recently appointed full time managers and bought a small farm near Euroa which now gives me the time and space needed to devote myself to a new challenge.

“As a councillor I have been proud to work with the community to improve local infrastructure and services.

“When I don’t agree with something, I believe it’s important to do something instead of just complaining.

“Standing for state parliament was never part of my plan, but my family and I, like millions of others, have felt the direct impact of government decisions on our business and our lives in recent years.

“It’s important that the voice of our region continues to be heard - loudly and clearly - in state parliament.

“I know the role of an MP is more than a fulltime job, but if I am selected, I will give the best of myself every day to represent our region and to fight for the investment we need.

“I believe The Nationals are best placed to continue to represent this region because, as Steph showed during her time as our representative, they understand the needs of country communities and they work together as a team to get outcomes.”

Working together to protect Taungurung Country IN one of many projects that took place during NAIDOC week was a High Country plan that the North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has partnered with Parks Victoria and Taungurung traditional owners to protect and manage Taungurung Country.

The project included three days of targeted training on alpine ecology and on-ground weed control on alpine peatland complexes across the High Country.

The project aims to build capacity for managing these sensitive areas, foster partnerships, increase opportunities to connect with Country, and discuss cultural knowledge and values that have shaped these environments for thousands of years.

“We are land managers - this is what we do,” Tangerang elder Corrie Leatham said.

The training covered topics including the unique features of the Australian Alps and native fauna and flora, as well as discussions on legacy impacts, ongoing threats, and future challenges.

“We are aware of the willow’s ability to spread seed across larger distances, and finding well-established plants that may be responsible for the presence of newer shoots in other parts of the park catchment was very satisfying,” Mr Markwick said.

“Caring for Country is allencompassing, not just the treatment of invasive species, but moving through Country and reading what makes it healthy - how the movement of plants and animals work, reading the landscape for geomorphological processes and reestablishing connections to and continuation of ancestral custodianship of Country.

“We left with a sense of further optimism that momentum can be built upon to allow traditional owners to actively manage Country under the ethos of caring for Country.”

The project is supported by the North East CMA through funding from the Federal Government.

Applications open for music scholarship APPLICATIONS are now open for the Chris Deutscher Memorial Scholarship, being offered for a second year by Radio Mansfield 99.7FM. The scholarship was established in honour of one of the radio station’s founding members, Chris Deutscher, who passed away in 2018.

Chris had a passion for Australian country music and was also a talented musician.

Offered annually, the music scholarship promotes and encourages Mansfield students who have a passion and talent for music.

Two scholarship prizes will be awarded.

The first is by way of encouragement and will be for a primary aged student who has been undertaking music

lessons for at least a year.

The sum of $300 is for continued music education or towards the purchase/hire of an instrument.

The second grant is for a secondary aged student.

The sum of $500 will be awarded in recognition of an achievement in music to date and, again, to help them continue their music education, contribute to the purchase of a new instrument or perhaps even to undertake a recording of their own work.

Past president and longtime presenter and committee member at Radio Mansfield, Dallas Daniel, said the radio station received some encouraging feedback following the 2021 inaugural scholarship from music teachers, students and parents.

“Enthusiasm from local music teachers and students means we’re looking forward to receiving a high volume of outstanding applications,” said Ms Daniel.

“This is an exciting opportunity for any young local musician and we believe it is a perfect way to continue the legacy of Chris Deutscher.”

Applications close on September 16 so there is plenty of opportunity for music students to prepare an application.

Shortlisted applicants will audition on October 8 and will also be invited to present their music and be interviewed live on radio.

Fists fly in Eildon assaults AN Eildon man who faced assault-related charges in Mansfield court last week has been fined $800 and ordered to complete an accredited behavioural change program.

Prosecutors outlined events which allegedly occurred after the victim left Eildon Foodworks in March of 2021.

The victim and her passenger had pulled over in their vehicle on a road near the local hardware store to talk to an acquaintance, who was in a parked vehicle to w their left.

The accused - who was driving behind them - became frustrated at the victim stopping their vehicle and drove up on the right hand side, allegedly abusing the victim for stopping in the v middle of the road.

According to the accused, a verbal altercation occurred between the pair.

However, the victim alleged the accused then drove ahead, parked his vehicle, got out and approached her on the driver’s side before

striking her with an open hand through the open window.

The force was enough to knock the victim’s head off her headrest.

The accused then returned to his vehicle and drove off.

A witness photographed the accused’s vehicle and provided the registration number to police, who later interviewed, arrested and released the accused pending summons.

The accused, who believed there had been no assault, was described by his defence as a 52 year old married man with four children who was active within his community, particularly local sport, where he volunteered his time.

He pleaded guilty but said he had no recollection of the assault, noting that there was room for parking on both sides of the road and the victim’s car had stopped without warning or indication on the narrow stretch.

The accused said he narrowly y avoided a collision by y

swerving and that the victim had wound down her window, sworn and made an insulting gesture at him.

This offended him and motivated him to get out of his own car and remonstrate with the victim; “a response to a degree of provocation which meant that he momentarily lost command of his own impulses”, his defence concluded, noting the accused’s remorse and requesting consideration of a non-conviction disposition.

The accused had a couple of matters in the distant past, described as “aggressive and angry discussions, including a charge of assault”.

Police prosecutors said, “If we boil things down to the incident itself; the accused has taken offence at someone’s driving, felt the need to get involved, and when spoken to in manner he didn’t like, he has slapped her through the window with enough force to move her head off the headrest”.

punished, for deterrence and to denounce the behaviour.

“While he may be demonstrating remorse now, at the time of interview he said this was not an unlawful assault he did not see striking someone’s face as an assault.”

The magistrate agreed.

“Although the priors are dated, they are indicative of a certain mindset that he is unable to control and will resort to some form of violence,” the magistrate said.

“It is offensive and inappropriate that this behaviour should occur, in addition to the fact that it’s unlawful.”

The magistrate issued a fine of $800 without conviction and ordered the accused to complete an accredited behavioural change program, adding that if he did not meet those conditions, he would face more severe punishment and likely a conviction.

A SECOND defendant, who was accused of punching a man in the head while leaving Foodworks in Eildon, was given a six month g

undertaking of good behaviour, and a conviction recorded due to his criminal history.

Prosecutors outlined alleged events from October 2021, during which the victim was leaving the supermarket with his son’s girlfriend and said to the accused words to the effect of “did you jog down here?”.

The accused, who said he’d struggled with his weight and had grown tired of the victim’s taunts about it, then punched the victim in the face, telling him to “stop telling me to jog; I’m sick of it”.

The accused disputed the victim’s words, noting that he’d said more than just ask if he’d jogged down, and had made an additional obscene comment regarding his weight.

This comment was what made him react, the accused said.

He punched the victim a second time after the victim replied that he was “just joking”. g

The accused, who was 47, unemployed, and lived at home with his parents while providing care for his mother, said he had known the victim for 20 years.

He said he’d been bothered by him previously when walking past his house, at which times the victim allegedly made similar remarks.

He knows he didn’t deal with it properly, was remorseful and understands what he did was wrong.

The magistrate noted a lot of drug priors for the accused, but none that were assault related.

“When you use a lot off drugs, it affects the chemicals in your brain and the way you respond when people annoy you,” the magistrate said.

“The guy shouldn’t have said it, but you should’ve been the better man.”

The magistrate ordered a six month undertaking off good behaviour, and a conviction to be recorded due to the accused’s criminal history. y

RIDE THE RAINBOW: 1000 extra rainbow trout have been added to Eildon weir.

FAMILIES and children were busy casting a line these school holidays with thousands of extra fish stocked into waters across the North East.

Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) announced almost 9000 catchable sized rainbow trout have now been stocked into 20 lakes across the region, with 1000 of them going to the Eildon Pondage Weir.

The trout were also bred locally by the Victorian Fisheries Authority at the Snobs Creek hatchery near Eildon.

“Stocking our waters with rainbow trout provides the perfect opportunity for families and kids to get outdoors and try their luck casting a line these school holidays,” said Ms Symes.

“Rainbow trout are ideal for fishers of all ages and skill levels as they’re relatively easy to catch - making it a great day out on the water.”

The stockings have been funded by recreational fishing licence fees and form part of the Go Fishing Victoria plan to get more people fishing, more often.

Rainbow trout are a great stocking option for children and beginners because they’re easy to catch and take a variety of baits and lures.

Stocked lakes also feature fishing platforms, bankside tracks and picnic areas - which create safe and convenient access for families to give fishing a go.

Celebrating breeding success at skink chalet THE State Government is celebrating the success of a new breeding program for the endangered Guthega Skink.

Two babies have been born from breeding between the two Australian populations of Guthega Skink, marking a historic milestone in conservation of the lizard.

Healesville Sanctuary has successfully bred hatchlings from a female skink from the High Country and a male from Kosciuszko in New South Wales, a positive step for genetic diversity in the native reptile.

“Not only are they adorable little lizards, but these offspring provide hope for the future, and will play a key role to inform how we continue our conservation work at Healesville Sanctuary and out in the wild,” said Zoos Victoria threatened species keeper Peter Comber.

Zoos Victoria keepers were delighted to find the new arrivals basking on a rock in their specialist-built skink chalet.

The duo’s arrival was late in the typical breeding season, ahead of the species’ winter hibernation.

In the wild, the Guthega Skink mates in late spring or early summer and gives birth to three or four live young in February-March.

The Healesville-bred skinks are the first instance of breeding between the two populations of the species, found only in the Vic High Country and Mt Kosciuszko.

The baby skinks are tiny, weighing three grams - about the same as a small button.

The first ever successful breeding of Guthega Skinks in

captivity took place at Healesville Sanctuary in 2017.

The Guthega Skink conservation program has been running for 10 years, and the genetic rescue component began two years ago with knowledge developed by Healesville Sanctuary keepers, which resulted in incremental changes to husbandry techniques, housing and hibernation strategies.

The skink makes its home in alpine tussock grassland, heathland and snow gum woodlands.

A medium-sized lizard with a snout-vent length up to 11cm, the Guthega Skink is blackish-brown on the back and upper flanks, with greyish-brown stripes and numerous longitudinal rows of sharp, pale spots.

This species is listed as endangered.

“The average price we’ve estimated for a staff bed, and that could be a bed in a four-share room, is between three to four thousand dollars, maybe even more for the season,” she said.

Across a 16-week season, that equates to between $187.50 and $250 a week for a bed.

Ms Logan, who also owns a Falls Creek hotel, said not all businesses provide employee accommodation, meaning some staff are paying high room costs themselves.

“We provide staff accommodation for our people, but that’s often not an ideal setup,” she said.

According to Ms Logan, the lack of quality of accommodation in the area impacts businesses’ ability to find and keep staff.

A FORMER Benalla Shire councillor will be required to pay $8500 in legal fines and costs, after failing to disclose personal interests during a four year term ahead of an unsuccessful re-election bid in 2020.

Facing Benalla Magistrates Court earlier this week, William van Wersch pleaded guilty to six charges related to personal interest return non-disclosures, with an initial 18 charges ultimately reduced on the promise of a guilty plea.

Evidence before the court alleged the defendant had failed to disclose personal, land and trust interests during his time on local council, in breach of the Local Government Act, which ensures the public can view shareholdings, trusts and business associations of council decision makers.

The investigation into his non-disclosure was launched following an assessment by the Local Government Inspectorate, which analysed 4600 personal interest returns from 650 councillors at 78 councils from mid-2020.

Option one removed council’s formal support for celebrations on January 26 and option two continued the current arrangements.

Based on a single vote per IP address, the results indicated that 46 per cent of respondents voted for option one and 54 per cent voted for option two.

Some 29 written submissions were also received.

Of these, 12 were in support of option one, six were in support of option two, and

11 provided alternative views or information.

An officer recommendation was put to council to note the community feedback received and to continue to celebrate January 26 in 2023 as per existing arrangements, acknowledging that some communities will choose not to undertake such events.

Four councillors voted for the motion and three voted against, which resulted in council’s current role around January 26 to remain the same in 2023.

With the motion only keeping council’s involvement confirmed for 2023 and not the years after, this is a matter that could be addressed again in the future.

MOUNT Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board has been busy expanding and improving habitat for the critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum.

A few years ago, the Tunnel of Love was constructed to safely link possum populations above and below the Great Alpine Road at Mount Higginbotham.

Now, the habitat restoration at Mt Little Higginbotham has further increased habitat and connectivity to support the local Mountain Pygmy-possum populations.

Mt Little Higginbotham’s boulder field was historically quarried, with the rocks mainly used for road and building materials.

While the quarry operations ceased before the 1980s, gaps in what would have likely been Mountain Pygmy-possum habitat have remained.

In 2019, alpine resorts, environmental organisations, and leading researchers, with the support of the North East Catchment Management Authority, developed a plan to restore the quarry.

QUILT CAN BE YOURS: This beautifully crafted quilt could be yours just by purchasing a raffle ticket. Money raised goes towards the creation of more quilts which are donated to disadvantaged children and the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre.

High horse quilt to be raffled THE High Country Quilters group of Mansfield is not all about getting together and creating masterpieces it is also about helping community.

Quilters group representative Cathy Mahoney said members are very community minded and help locally as much as they can.

Each year the quilters create more than 30 quilts which are donated to children’s charities across the state.

One of those charities is the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre and the other is the South Cross Kids Camps.

With the kids camp cause local disadvantaged, abused and neglected primary aged school children are supported in attending an annual camp which this year is being held at Howqua Camp.

Last year the quilters donated one quilt for each child attending the camp which they then took home

with them.

Another 16 quilts were donated to the children’s cancer centre.

This year the quilters are fundraising to replenish their material supplies and to upgrade their equipment which will allow them to create more masterpieces.

A special quilt depicting a prancing horse, valued at $2000, is to be raffled both on-line and at local outlets.

The raffle will be drawn on August 30.

Applications open for youth drama program THE MMuDS Summer Youth Drama Program for January 2023 is now open.

Applicants from 13 - 19 years are invited to be part of this exciting performing arts program, coordinated by MMuDS and Theatre Youth Unlimited (TYU).

This is a wonderful opportunity for young people in our community, who have an interest in The Performing Arts, to get together, learn from very experienced teachers and concludes with putting on a real performance.

MMuDS is extremely proud to develop and support programs for the local youth of our community and also to partner with TYU and the financial

support of the Bushfire Recovery Program and Mansfield Shire Council.

Participants will live-in at Merrijig with Stewarts Bus Lines providing transport to and form the Mansfield Performing Arts Centre each day for rehearsals and shows. This drama program is usually run in Gippsland, and for the first time it’s happening in Mansfield.

MMuDS has traditionally sponsored young people to attend the Gippsland drama camps and the feedback from those participants inspired MMuDS to work with TYU to have the summer drama camp right here, so that more Mansfield youth could take advantage

of this amazing program.

“We’ve been able to get significant funding from the Bushfire Recovery Grant program and Mansfield Shire; MMuDS is matching shire funding so that the cost, usually $700, will only be $50 per participant for the entire program including accommodation, food and training by qualified and experienced drama professionals,” said Michael Isbister, MMuDS president.

Registrations close on August 31 for Mansfield district youth, after which it will be open to the rest of Victoria.

Ideal framework for tackling shire’s feral pig problem THE framework established under the National Wild Dog Action Plan is ideal for tackling the re-emerging feral pig problem in Mansfield Shire and surrounds, according to the plan’s management coordinator Greg Mifsud.

Mr Mifsud told landholders at a pest animal management expo in the Upper Murray that existing wild dog and community groups could be used under the National Feral Pig Taskforce to deliver strategic and targeted control programs on private and public land to address the emerging feral pig problem.

The National Wild Dog Action Plan’s performance as a blueprint strategy for wild dog management promoting evidencebased, best practice tools and methods aimed at protecting agriculture, the environment and community wellbeing is well documented.

The plan’s principles are implemented by the national management coordinator along with the peak industry organisations, state farming bodies and stakeholders.

National feral cat and fox coordinator Gillian Basnett said the success of the NWDAP and its coordinated approach to wild dog management provided an excellent example of what could be achieved with an integrated pest management approach in terms of using all available tools to best effect.

“That is farmers, land managers, pest controllers and community groups talking and working together and where multiple species are targeted,” Ms Basnett said.

“When talking to participants at the pest animal management expos it was this success, along with the well-established relationships between communities and government agencies, that made people more receptive to the possibility and need to manage other pest species such as feral pigs, foxes and feral cats.”

Mr Mifsud said there were synergies between the wild dog management framework and other pest species with communication between the key stakeholders and an understanding of the need for coordinated management.

“There is a real opportunity to use the

“Through DELWP and Agriculture Victoria, we can start to implement some of those feral pig management programs using the same structures and community groups in the wild dog space.”

Agriculture Victoria hosted the pest animal management expos at Cudgewa, Whitfield, Tubbut and Buchan in June.

Mr Mifsud said from a wild dog management perspective, the Victoria Wild Dog Pro-

gram was one of the most successful in the country.

“The nil tenure approach we have delivered over the 10 years has resulted in a 70 per cent decline on stock attacks across the affected regions,” he said.

“The co-operative approach has led to the introduction of aerial baiting, ground baiting and the integration between primary producers and public land managers is the showcase in terms of what effective management looks like.

“The integration of those control tools and the community effort working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning has generated that reduction in impact.”

There were also presentations by Agriculture Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Parks Victoria, Victoria Police, Catchment Management Authorities and Landcare, along with pest management organisations and suppliers with information and demonstrations on trapping, baiting and fencing.

Students shine in deer discussion POREPUNKAH Primary School grade five and six students Julian Toy, Laila Spencer, Esther Ludeman and Kody Watkins are the co-authors of a book about the environmental impacts of feral deer.

Titled ‘Invasive Species: A Deeper Look at Feral Deer, A Porepunkah Case Study’, the book was a result of six months of immersive learning about invasive species and strategies to lessen the impact of feral deer.

SENSATIONAL STUDENTS: Porepunkah Primary School students Julian Toy and Esther Ludeman were proud to co-write a case study about feral deer in the local environment.

The book investigated Porepunkah’s natural habitat, invasive species and why they were introduced, the negative impacts of feral deer, and what communities can do to help.

Grade six students Laila and Esther said that writing a book helped them further understand the problems posed by the feral species.

“It helped us to think deeper about the problems,” said Laila.

“When you hear about it in class it makes sense, but when you work on it as a project it sinks in more.”

Esther agreed.

“You learn about the problem and get to talk about it,” she said.

“We also learnt about trees that are affected.”

Grade five and six students at the school participated in a series of lessons on environmental issues leading up to a final activity day on June 10, with the four selected students collating the key information learnt during the sessions to develop a book.

The four students worked with program coordinator Maddy Shaw, from the Petaurus Education Group.

According to Ms Shaw, the book stemmed from six months of lessons, field trips and consultation, and was a reflection of the students’ journey and what they’ve learnt.

Julian said he hoped farmers would

change their fencing to prevent native wildlife getting hurt.

“If farmers use barbed wire to stop deer other native animals, like sugar gliders, can get caught and this can be fatal,” he said.

School principal Jill Gillies said she was excited that the school was working with organisations like the Upper Ovens Landcare Group to make a difference in our local environment.

“The next part of the project will be working with the Upper Ovens Landcare Group to plant out the riparian area behind the school’s pine plantation,” she said.

“This means our students have the opportunity to play a major role in protecting and enhancing their own environment.

Celebrating winter in Jamieson FORMER Jamieson resident Beryl Morley was recognised for her contribution to the Mansfield Country Women’s Association recently where she received a certificate for her 40 years of membership and support.

She also received a Service Badge recognising her 40 years of service.

Beryl joined the CWA in 1979 as a resident in Jamieson where she became the unofficial driver for a number of Jamieson residents, who also held membership at the Country Women’s Association in Mansfield, so they could also attend the association’s meetings.

Beryl held office on the committee as secretary during 1982 - 1983.

This much loved and active association has raised funds over many years with craft needle work and an amazing variety of handmade toys and crochet knee rugs for hospital requests.

Baby Baskets were also well in demand, as the association also provided these necessary gifts for new mothers upon leaving hospital.

Beryl also ran bus trips to Melbourne and other regional towns as a means of a social event including a shopping adventure at wholesale outlets.

Beryl also was driver for ladies to attend the Bingo nights at the Mansfield Golf Club raising funds for various charities in the district.

Beryl’s son Wayne and his partner Kelly, are also well know popular Jamieson residents.

Beryl often comes to visit her family in Jamieson and catches up with old friends, for a cup of tea and a chat.

THE Jamieson Café staff and clientele celebrated under the watchful eye of owner Kate Berg at the official licensed event specifically celebrating winter.

Last Friday evening a group of friends celebrated with ‘Mulled wine’ and delicious delicacies, at the newly licensed Jamieson Café.

It was a very successful event with local residents enjoying the hospitality.

Congratulations.

THE Kevington Hotel owners Willi and Daryl Cashmore are planning a renovation on their recently acquired hotel.

They have invited local Kevington, Jamieson and close-by residents to a celebration afternoon and evening at the hotel to enjoy a social gathering with a barbecue, live music and some good cheer prior to the renovation work before their spring opening.

LAST weekend, Willi’s Jamieson Thai Restaurant opened for business following a break.

The visitors and local residents availed themselves of the cosy

dining room’s log fires and the dining experience with relish.

The family have enjoyed a skiing experience for a few days before re-opening their very popular restaurant.

THE Jamieson General Store proprietors Sally and Paul Fletcher with their staff have been very busy over the school holidays with many visitors coming in to the area spending a few days.

THE Jamieson Caravan Park has been a very popular venue, with the riverside reserve and playground amenities available, although the river is running fast, the vista is very attractive.

Local residents who brave the cold waters of the Jamieson River have been astounding the local ‘softees’.

Every day, three local ‘hardy’ persons (two chaps and one lady) plunge into the Jamieson River and swim.

This almost heroic achievement commenced in the summer, not causing a stir, with many visiting and local residents enjoying a cool dip on a hot day.

One of the chaps was helping a local family with their water pump over the weekend, fearing the worst they thought he might have to go into the freezing cold river, to rescue a foot valve.

“No worries mate I’ve just come out of the river,” was his astounding reply.

THERE have been recent dual victories for men’s pennant golfers, but the one brought home by the scratch team was historic and broke a 50 year drought for the club.

As such it’s earned them this quarter’s nomination for the Sports Team of the Year - an award won last year by their female handicap counterparts.

The scratch team played Albury, after loading the Commercial Courtesy Bus at the club for their two hour drive.

It was quiet, introspective, a time of calmness and inner thinking of the challenge following, unaware of the soon unknown unfolding historic events.

THE HOTEL DELATITE Anticipation was high, with the scratch team being unbeaten all season and the ladies pennant teams being victorious the week before.

The day was a very tight affair and the scratch team won in the final moments of the match with the too’s and fro’s that occur in match play; up one minute and down the next, exciting and scary.

On the last hole of the day, locked in at two wins each, Paul Cougle was on the 18th fairway, neck and neck with a challenging opponent,

with a wayward second shot by Paul hidden in trees on the right of the fairway about 80m from the green.

His opponent was straight down the centre and pitched to about two metres from the hole.

Out of view was Paul, peering through maple leaves and trees shedding their autumn foliage.

A calculated and skilful shot put him to the front of the green, a splendid chip to about 1.5m and an immaculate putt sealed the deal, while the poor other lad missed his putt, game over, season over.

A momentous and exceptional win making the Mansfield Golf Club Men’s Scratch Pennant team deserving second quarter nominees of Rotary’s Sports Team of the Year Award.

“Our sector is made up of many humble people, who quietly go about volunteering, coaching and supporting people with disability so they can live healthy, active lives.

“Together, these individuals, organisations and clubs are making tremendous, positive change in the lives of people with disability.

“We strongly encourage everyone to consider those people who are making a quiet, but significant impact in their communities and acknowledge their contribution by nominating them for an award.

“The outstanding achievement on the sporting field will also be considered including the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games held in late 2021.”

Boyhood fan Anderson sinks Richmond in AFL A BOYHOOD Richmond fan, Gold Coast’s Noah Anderson was in no mood to be generous to the Tigers with his after-the-siren AFL matchwinning shot.

Anderson was perhaps the coolest head at Metricon Stadium when he slotted a goal to secure a remarkable comeback two-point win for the Suns.

The 21-year-old realised any AFL players’ childhood dream by winning the game for his team with a kick, coincidentally against the team he barracked for growing up.

“That was going through my head when I marked it,” Anderson told AAP. “I was thinking about that, I’ve got a lot of mates who I’m going to say were Richmond supporters.

“It was pretty special.

“I’ve never beaten them.”

Anderson’s moment capped a game where he played a key role in a comeback where the Suns reeled a 40-point deficit early in the third term to claim a win which keeps their hopes of a maiden finals berth alive.

He finished with two games and 26 touches to be one of the Suns’ best.

Fittingly, good mate Matt Rowell was also crucial in the dying minutes for the hosts kicking a booming goal and providing impetus at the stoppages to spark the big finish.

The pair’s AFL stories have been joined since they were the top two picks in the 2019 draft but Suns coach Stuart Dew says the story is now about two young players who are forging fine careers of their own side-by-side.

“Two very special players and they always get mentioned together,” Dew said.

“I feel like they get mentioned together now because of the standard of their performance at the age they are, and the maturity, their will to win.

“I love the way they go about it.

“It’s inspiring.

“I wish I did what they do when I played ... because they’re unbelievable the way they go about it.

“Just fantastic role models for, not just the younger guys - because they’re still in the infancy of their career - but for the older guys.

“They make sure that the other boys are on their toes as well.”

By SHAUN McMAHON ON a frosty Saturday morning last weekend, Bonnie Doon travelled to Whitfield Recreation Reserve to battle the King Valley Kangaroos.

The Bombers’ seniors’ side have been in top flight recently, and were looking to continue that form with another win.

After an evenly matched first quarter, when Jack Frost was only just getting his

marching orders courtesy of the midday sun, the Bombers turned up the heat.

They piled on five goals eight behinds in the second term to nudge ahead of the Kangaroos at half time.

Leading from the front once again was Campbell Smedley and Joel Sanford, whose top performances spurred the Bombers on as the game played out.

The Roos tried to recover some of their hop in the third

term but were outgunned by the Bombers, who slotted eight goals to King Valley’s two.

Standout performances from Zac Tanner, Zak Bailey, Trent Smith and Beau Smith solidified their strong lead heading into the final term, where the Bombers steadied the ship to beat a never-saydie Roos side.

They took home another solid win, with additional notable games from Jordan Davey, James Law and

William Wiggett.

Bonnie Doon seniors 16.13 (109) to King Valley seniors 11.3 (69).

Coaches Cup went to Zac Tanner, the Doon Pub Award to Campbell Smedley, Mansfield Pizza honours to Joel Sanford, and the Fan’s Pick Jay Jay Curtin.

Bonnie Doon will rest up for the bye next week before round 17 resumes and they take on Tarrawingee at the Doon rec reserve.

AN undermanned Bombers outfit travelled to King Valley on Saturday morning.

After losing a few players with COVID and the flu the Bombers reserves side knew they had to start well with just the one rotation on the bench which consisted of two senior players who had doubled up to help out the reserves.

The boys knew they were up for a long slog all day and had to start well, which they did with big Timmy Finger giving Luke Berriman and Xavier Fox a very good look at it early in the midfield.

That allowed the forwards in Sam Bennett and Angus Murray to get to work.

The first quarter came to an end and the Bombers were one kick behind the Roos but were eagerly up for the fight.

Sam Bell and Mitch Clarke contributed all day moving well up and down the ground finding space to get the ball forward.

Paul Diamond and Luke Jenkins also put their best foot forward with plenty of intercept marks across half back.

At the main break the Bombers went in a kick ahead of the Roos.

King Valley came out firing in the third quarter putting on a few quick goals but the Bombers responded, holding possession of the ball and taking space to move up the ground.

The Bombers went into the final break 13 points up; a couple of tired boys that had been running all day but knew they had a job to do in the last quarter after a few quick goals from the Roos.

Locky Pinder played a pivotal role down back late but the Bombers’ set up behind the ball made it hard for King Valley to get up the ground.

Trent Smith and Hamish Dunsford played an important role around the ground leading from the front while Mitch Purcell and Patty Revell put on the pressure.

The last few minutes felt like half the day had gone by stoppage after stoppage - a real scrap - until the siren sounded, the Bombers taking the close win in a tough day with trying conditions.

It’s a credit to all the boys that got onto the park; a gutsy effort and they’ll be happy to get the week off ff and enjoy the bye.

Before the game the girls were determined to play our brand of netball one quarter at a time.

The game was physical from the get go with the attackers having to work hard to keep their feet and stay on the court.

The strength shown in the goal ring by Portia Keatch and Mia Tanner was incredible.

Sarah Walker and Shannon Cameron worked the mid court all day providing plenty of movement and drive.

The second half of the game saw the girls having to reset, play our game and not buy into the physicality being shown on court.

Steph Ward came on and provided plenty of speed and confusion to her opponent while the defensive pressure shown by Anna Manning and Casey Thompson increased across the game.

Their hard work providing many tips, with their intercepts and rebounds easily moved down court with the help of Steph Evans.

With the game in the bag going into the last quarter the reminder to have fun and enjoy playing saw the game high quarter score of 20 goals for Bonnie Doon while King Valley were kept to their lowest of the game at three.

Another great win heading into the bye and ready for a strong push towards finals.

First quarter saw a strong defence from Meagan, Cass Mac and Madi.

The girls had put an impressive amount of pressure in the ring resulting in many turnovers.

Bringing the ball out of defence the girls paced themselves as they worked the ball down the court to attack.

The attack end throughout the game was just as strong as Jo held amazingly all game making it easy for the girls on the ring to pass in.

Jess created a lot of space in the ring creating more space for Jo to receive the pass.

The game saw a few different changes throughout with Darcy returning to court and doing what she does best, reading the play and striking for the intercept.

Jess Harris playing both C and WA created the effortless passes both into and onto the ring.

The first quarter was smooth, albeit everyone contending with a very slippery surface, the Bonnie Doon team made a lot of great play.

Defensive pressure was solid leading to many turnovers, giving the goalers a lot of opportunity at goal and they delivered, leading the team to a quarter time score of 23-4.

The second quarter started off very scrappy with everyone wary of the slippery surface.

Hats off to King Valley who real-

ly stepped up their game, keeping the score to just a three goal difference for the quarter.

Going into the third quarter the instructions were simple, slow it down, look for the best options and play our game.

Just one change in the line-up saw Natalie Taylor take the court in C, as always she didn’t disappoint getting plenty of tips.

Another terrific quarter for Bonnie Doon who continued to dominate with a score of 54-17 at the break.

The last quarter was a ripper, a few changes were made with our u17s superstar Chloe Cash taking the court for her first senior game, and wow she didn’t disappoint, providing so many great drives and even scoring a few goals.

The whole Bonnie Doon team stepped it up another notch, defensive pressure was strong, providing little options for King Valley and forcing many turnovers leading to plenty of opportunities at goal.

Michelle Tanner was on fire shooting a whopping 60 of our total 76 goals and very much deserved to get named best on court.

Every single player on this team worked hard and put in the effort for the whole four quarters to produce the end result, proving we are the team to beat this year, we have

The attack end, Demi Murray, Amy Cash, Tilly Thornton, Stella Brakels and Cobie McCormack worked the ball with exceptional speed and accuracy into the ring.

The attacking team were feeding flawless passes into Cobie, Stella and Tilly boosting our percentage.

The defence team had many intercepts with Emerson Ketch, Gemma Revell and Grace Timmers dominating the ring with consistently obtaining rebounds and Torah Morgan and Maddie Maher also taking many intercepts and bringing it out of defence into the attack end.

Foggy foray for the under 14s IT was an early start for the boys on Saturday morning as they headed over to Whitfield to take on the Kangaroos in the fog.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the only fog around.

The boys scrambled for the ball in the first half.

Noah Whittall and Will Northcott out-ran their opponents as they tried to save face and get a score on the board.

However, the Kangaroos’ defensive line was too strong.

The Eagles’ back line found it hard to hang onto the ball and get a clear passage out of the Kangaroos scoring zone.

At half time the fog (on the ground) had cleared and it was time for the boys to make their come back.

Work rate did increase and we started seeing some good play from the Eagles.

Alex Kipping showed good ball skills in the forward line, just missing an opportunity to score a much needed goal.

Charlie Dobson’s speed and agility helped as he made a fantastic tackle that lifted the boys’ spirits.

Our captain James Benton then led by example kicking our first goal just on three quarter time.

Liam Smith fought hard all game never giving up and his efforts paid off with another goal to the Eagles.

The boys started getting their game together and looking like a team.

They played great defensive football keeping the opposition scoreless in the last quarter, but unfortunately they had left their run too late and Kangaroos came away with the win this time.

Spirits high despite a tough break ASHTON Prossor, who plays for Mansfield Junior Football Club, helped Eagles seniors coach Chad Owens with a few tactics at their game last Saturday.

Ashton broke his arm in a practice match before the season started and had to have surgery.

Eight weeks later he was about to have his first game back for the Under 13s Eagles and the Friday before broke his arm again in the same spot at school.

Unfortunately he won’t play at all this season but loves his footy.

So it was heartening to see Chad and the senior group welcome him as assistant coach for the day.

Well done to Chad and players for making Ashton feel part of the team and keep his passion and love for footy alive in 2022.

Following the split round, the Eagles return to the field this weekend on July 16 to take on Rochester at their home ground Moon Oval.

Run Mansfield Run

THE Mansfield Athletics team had a great day on the Sandown race track in the Athletics Victoria Road Relays Championships.

Each runner completed the 6.2 kilometres in perfect running conditions on the fast road circuit.

The women’s team did well finishing mid-field with teenager Adele Leon stepping up to the seniors’ team, and the team also welcomed one of North East Victoria’s fastest runners Brooke Williams from Cobram.

“Next year the Mansfield team will unite with all North East Victoria teams to form a competitive regional team for the winter competition,” said Mansfield Athletics’ Liam Delany.

“The men had a great day out with our Division Three team pushing the undefeated Yarra Ranges team to the limit, but falling just short with a strong second place.

“Our Division Six team had a big win, with another teenager Tristan Fox helping the club to a strong win.

“The Family three kilometre run/walk was also great fun for those not ready to race.

“To experience running on the Sandown race track with elite runners was amazing.

“It’s been great getting the Mansfield teenagers training and racing.

“This Thursday many of them will be competing in the State School Championships in the Yarra Valley.”

Sunday, July 17 is the Little Athletics Regional Championships in Alexandra and on Saturday, July 23 the Athletics Victoria Cross Country State Championships are taking place in Bundoora.

CELEBRATION: Close friends, family, colleagues and fans celebrated the second annual ‘Shred for Chumpy’ day this year, which was held on Friday, July 8.

Shred for Chumpy THE second annual ‘Shred for Chumpy’ day this year was held on Friday, July 8.

Close friends, family, colleagues, fans, and those showing their respect spent the day celebrating Chumpy’s life in the way his friends believed he would love the most - riding and surfing.

Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin represented Australia in 2010, 2014, and 2018 Winter Olympics in snowboard cross, becoming a twotime world champion.

He also competed in the Winter X Games, the FIS Snowboarding World Championships for many years, and the New Zealand Winter Games.

Aside from snowboarding, Chumpy was remembered by friends as a great musician, ocean lover, and all-around generous human.

His life inspired many to live out their dream of snowboarding, and his passion for encouraging the younger generation was unrivalled.

In 2016, Chumpy teamed up with Red Bull to put on ‘Chumpy’s Boarding House’ a program Chumpy created to mentor and coach eight of the best up-and-coming riders in Australia.

Beyond that, Chumpy became a regular at the resorts across Australia, teaming up with junior programs such as Thredbo’s ‘Mountain Academy and Ryan Tiene’s ‘Turn & Burn progression camps to inspire and train future Olympians while keeping everyone smiling.

Chumpy touched the lives of so many, not only in the snow community but also in the Australian sporting community.

THE second half of Benalla’s squash year has started up again with the first night of free ‘Come and Try’ sessions being held on Monday night and the second this Wednesday at 6:30pm.

Don’t worry if you miss these because there is another two free nights next week on Monday and Wednesday evenings with a 6:30 start.

Come along and have a go at the great game of squash.

The spring season of the Benalla Squash Club competition will commence the following week.

Benalla junior squash members were treated to a rare coaching session with Raj Nanda on Friday, June 24.

Coaching was aimed at developing stroke play and Raj brought with him Kumail and Haider Naqvi to assist with the training.

Kumail (16yrs) and Haider (15yrs) are both exceptional squash players on the junior circuit, competing for spots on the Victorian Junior squad team with goals to represent Australia in the near future.

Friday night was also presentation night for Benalla juniors and Raj kindly assisted with the trophy presentation, encouraging juniors to be the best squash players they can be.

Saturday, June 25 Raj Nanda held a coaching day at the Wodonga Squash Club inviting juniors of all standards to participate and focus on improving their skills.

This was well attended by players from as far away as Melbourne and into NSW, Tyler Vaughan and Alex Briggs from Benalla worked tirelessly on their footwork and serving, when they were not mingling with the other players.

There were juniors who had never played squash before as well as Kumail and Haider Naqvi, Patrick O’Shannessy, Ameilia Brigden and other high ranking Victorian and NSW

Sunday, June 26 Wodonga Squash Club hosted a combined Silver/Bronze squash tournament and Benalla was well represented with five players competing.

Angus Woodward was promoted into a higher grade to provide him with more challenging games and Angus showed what he is made of by winning his last match in five games, a great way to finish out the tournament.

Congratulations to all the Benalla juniors who attended these squash events over the weekend, it is clear that you are all improving your skills and very keen to continue playing squash.

The next Junior Bronze tournament is July 17 in Wagga Wagga, with the Victorian Junior Championships on July 23 and 24 at Albert Park.

Tuesday, Men’s Stroke Event: 1st - Rob Healey Net 72 (h/c 15); 2nd - Peter Kilkenny Net 73 (h/c 10); 3rd - Malcolm Griffiths Net 74 C/B. Three Stroke rounds in a week.

Personally, I like it but understand that others don’t.

Why? For me it is only a few weeks away from the club championships, which I love, win or lose - four rounds of stroke, the true test for golfing athletes.

Back to Tuesday, Brad Grant had two NTPs. Thursday - Stableford: Fifty-two players across two divisions.

A division: 1st - Kane Blunt 36 pts on his own in the lead, h/c 6; 2nd - Rob Healey 35 pts (h/c 15); 3rd - Rod

Sargent 34 pts (h/c 0).

B division: 1st - Tom Nicol 39 pts (h/c 2l); 2nd - Laurie Harcus 36 pts C/B (h/c 10); 3rd - Charlie Heath 36 pts also (h/c 18).

Tom, that is a great score anytime, weather or occasion.

One has to ask: Maurie Walsh, whose skills we have touted about so many times, he won three NTPs, but only second on the podium?

Saturday saw our three ‘top guns’ go to Benalla for a 4BBB event, which seventy players contested.

Mark Jones and Rod Sargent teamed together.

Kyle Bridgeman teamed with his mate from Beechworth, Dylan Poole; another very handy player off a 2 handicap.

Rod and Mark played well but weren’t in the prize winners, although Rod did have an NTP to his name, nice one.

The winners were Kyle and Dylan with the magnificent score of 47 points, winning by two shots.

They were eleven under their handicaps finishing with many birdies and an eagle.

Always proud when we beat the rest.

By LYN FOOTS MANSFIELD Bowls Club members are continuing to enjoy social bowls both Tuesday and Friday afternoons with ‘come and try’ and visitors welcome to join in the fun.

Names are to be on the board by 12.30pm each day with games starting at 1pm.

Tuesday’s social bowls saw 15 players enjoying the day with the winners of the day being Noel Jackson, Theo Scheltinga, Anne Wileman and Steve Smith on two games 32 pts.

Runners-up were John Foots, Gwen Gray, Mike Harrison and Chris Edward one game 21pts.

Friday’s social bowls saw nine players having a game with Ian Morley, Steve Lewis and Elva Healy winning the day with two wins 33pts with Mark Bettany and Alan Hatcher being runners-up one win 22pts.

Sunday’s indoor bowls saw nine players enjoying a fabulous day of fun with the winners on the day being Lyn Foots and Dawn Jones on 27pts on a count back from Keith Millott and Anne Wileman.

The bowling club encourages everyone to play bowls and supplies tea and coffee facilities for you to enjoy.

All we ask is that you leave the premises as you found them.

FINE FORM: Millie Cumming was in excellent form to win with 34 points last Wednesday.

GOOD to see so many high handicap ladies out there giving it a go lately.

Well done to Colleen Leeds (45) for winning Tuesday’s nine hole stableford round with 13 points on a countback to Pam Abbott (43),and Kerry Nicol (41) took home 3rd with 10 points.

The conditions are still pretty tough and especially when there is no run to help those who don’t have a big drive.

On Wednesday there were 16 players enjoying glorious weather once the frost finally cleared.

Millie Cumming (25) was in excellent form to win with 34 points from runner up Linda Terry (21) 33 on a countback to 3rd place Shelly Comerford (26) also 33.

Line balls went to Lyn Poulson 32, Lesley Anderson 29 and Jackie Smithwick also 29.

Nearest the pins were picked up by Lesley on the 3rd, Marion Foster on the 16th

and Millie had the 2nd shot on the 17th.

Finally, on Saturday, 11 players played stroke, and the money went to Marion Mitchell (28) with nett 77.

Lesley Anderson was runner up with 79 and Sam Bailey 3rd with 80 on a countback to Shelly Comerford and Lyn Poulson both also with 30 and taking the line balls.

Millie Cumming had her putting working well to take home that prize.

This week sees a few ladies heading to Cobram Barooga for the Golf Australia Country Championships and weekend getaway, so here’s hoping they get to bring home some trophies, or if that isn’t possible, I am sure they will all have a good time anyway, as it’s been a long time since we’ve had the opportunity of a golfing jaunt away.

For those staying home, Saturday is the mixed stableford 1,2,3 event for teams of three, so get your teams organised ladies as this is a fun format.

Molly wins at Melbourne International on Tadpole Mansfield Ponyy Club’s Mollyy Lines successful at Melbourne event MANSFIELD Pony Club’s senior member Molly Lines and her Off-The-Track horse Tadpole recently competed at the prestigious Melbourne International Three Day Event.

Taking place from June 9 to 13 at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre, the annual event consisted of three phases - Dressage, Cross Country and Showjumping.

In her first time competing at the event Molly jumped clear and under time to win the RV Off-The-Track CCIJ2*L. Molly and Taddy (as he is affectionately known) have been training hard for a number of years now and this year the hard work has finally paid off.

Last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID. Molly is currently completing her final year at Mansfield Secondary College, and to compete at such a level in equestrian at Molly’s age is an amazing achievement.

Her success is owed to many hours of hard work, amazing commitment and dedication.

“Well done also to her parents Bill and Lauren Lines for supporting her and helping to fulfil her equestrian dreams,” said Mansfield Pony Club president Joanne Clegg.

Molly has been a member of Mansfield Pony Club since she was three years old.

“Congratulations to Molly for not only competing at Melbourne International Three Day Event, but also winning her section CCIJ2*L,” Joanne said.

Skinner snares gold and squad selection THE World Championships Selection series ended last weekend at the state titles at Brisbane Gun Club for Australia’s shotgun athletes.

Overcast and rainy conditions made it a challenging event with the athletes stepping up their game with impressive scores despite the tough glare.

In the Women’s Trap, Mansfield’s own Catherine Skinner qualified for the final in first place with a score of 113/125.

Skinner would keep her momentum in the finals, going on to win the gold medal with a score of 27/35.

After the conclusion of the series, the selection panel decided on the athletes who will represent Australia at the World Championships later this year.

For shotgun, the World Championships will be held in Osijek, Croatia from September 19 - October 12, while for rifle and pistol, the World Championships will be held from October 12 - 25 in Cairo, Egypt.

Skinner was selected alongside Penny y Smith and Laetisha Scanlan in the senior women’s trap squad.

JUMPING CLEAR: Mansfield’s Molly Lines secured a win in her section at the prestigious Melbourne International Three Day Event. resenting the club on a regular basis in many disciplines.

The club meet is held on the first Sunday of the month at the Mansfield Showgrounds.
