Best year ever WHAT a year it has been for Mt Buller and Mt Stirling with record numbers visiting the resorts over the past winter season. For Mt Stirling it was a bumper year with more than 13,000 visitors to the trails almost double the stats from the 10 year average. Mt Buller also surpassed the 10 year average, gaining 649,713 visitor days compared to 476,421 just 10 years ago . Over the season, daily numbers scored at 452,439, with weekly averages well above previous years.

This season’s statistics was hard to compare with more recent figures with two years of very low numbers, due to the COVID pandemic, so many of the stats had to go against the 10 year average. Either way, it was fantastic results for a season which

saw snow lovers, who had been ‘starved’ of their favourite sports, back on the slopes after the two-year hiatus. The season finished across all six Victorian resorts recording some1,897,106 visitor days - an increase of about 48 per cent. Mt Buller Mt Stirling RMB CEO, Mark Bennetts said: “The 452,000 visitors to Buller was certainly a record.

“It’s the first time we’ve exceeded 450,000 and the fourth time we’ve exceeded 400,000 - the other three being the pre-COVID years of 2017, 2018 and 2019. “Excluding the two COVID impacted seasons, we’ve averaged 420,000 visitors from 2017-2022. “And if you go all the way back to 1980, we’d never once exceeded 350,000 before,” Mr Bennetts said.

“Not just that, the Buller total in 2022 was 42 per cent of all visitors to a Victorian alpine resort, and more than Falls Creek and Mt Hotham combined. “While the vagaries of climate change, continued investment in snowmaking, and continued growth in Melbourne, means that Mt Buller has averaged year-onyear growth of five percent since 2007.

“One word comes to mind as we reach the end of the 2022 snow season - BIG.” Mr Bennetts said accommodation bookings were incredibly strong, starting in February and building through to May - by which time it was hard to find an available bed. “We then had the amazing early season snow that got everyone buzzing and allowed the resorts to open one week early - which was a far cry from the COVID closures of the past two years,” he said. ■ Continued page 5
