A day at the races IT was a picture perfect day on Sunday - perfect for a day at the races.

Plenty obviously agreed, as large crowds turned out in their summer finest to enjoy a great day of picnic racing with the return of the Mansfield Hygain Cup for 2022.

A strong field of 10 competitors provided great racing and some thrilling finishes over the six races on the day.

COUNCIL has released its annual report for 2020-2021.

The report highlights the activities of Mansfield Shire Council over the past financial year.

Chief executive officer Kaylene Conrick said that the report reflected a strong year and a new direction for council.

“I’m proud of the work council has been able to accomplish this year,” said Ms Conrick.

“While this is an important statutory document,

the annual report provides a great overview for the activities council has carried out across the shire this year.

“We looked after more than 840 kilometres of road, registered more than 2000 pets, collected more than 3600 tonnes of kerbside waste and recycling, provided services to more than 70 infants and their parents, served almost 18,000 library patrons and distributed more than $500,000 in grants, services

and materials to the community and businesses.

“With $5.9 million on capital works, we spent money on renewing roads, building the Botanic Park Playground and Dual Court Stadium, and many other key projects while achieving a surplus of $6.6 million.”

EARLY ARRIVAL: Baby Lillian surprised her parents Krissy and Robert Heaney by arriving more than two weeks early on Christmas Day.

Rate rise capped at 1.75 per cent A NEW rate cap of 1.75 per cent has been set for all Victorian councils for the 2022/23 financial year.

Minister for Local Government, Shaun Leane, announced the cap last week, saying it will help ease the cost of living pressures for Victorians.

“We introduced the Fair Go Rates system to help reduce costof-living pressures for Victorians by preventing uncontrolled rate hikes from local councils across Victoria,” said Mr Leane.

“Community members have the chance to engage with their local councils as they make decisions about rate rises through their budget process each year.”

The cap is part of the State Government’s Fair Go Rates system, which began in 2016 to limit uncontrolled rate hikes and to provide councils with a clear framework to guide their budgeting while ensuring essential services continue to be delivered.

The cap is set each year by the Minister for Local Government with advice from the Essential Services Commission, guided by the Consumer Price Index.

Before the Fair Go Rates system was introduced residents faced an average rate increase of six per cent every year.

The current rate cap of 1.5 per cent is the lowest since the system was first introduced.

The cap is on total rate revenue, and rate rises will vary on individual properties, influenced

by factors such as valuations.

Councils’ annual rates fund and deliver essential community infrastructure and services such as local parks, libraries, community centres, roads, kindergartens, waste collection and sports grounds.

Councils individually set rates for their municipalities every year through their budget process and must consult with their communities on decisions relating to budgets, rates and other charges.

THERE are now more reasons to enjoy a stroll around Mansfield Botanic Park this summer with the installation of a new water station and bench seating.

The water refill station was sponsored

by Goulburn Valley Water and provides a spot to refill reusable drink bottles in addition to a drinking fountain.

Additional bench seating installed around the new playground provides places for rest along the walking track.

They are strategically placed to allow for supervision of children using the playground equipment.

Mayor James Tehan said the works enhanced the functionality of the playground and Botanic Park.

“The Botanic Park is a well-loved space and we know that the Mansfield community is always interested in its developments,” said Cr Tehan.

“Since its opening in June, we’ve had great feedback about the playground.

“These additions enhance how the community use the playground and Botanic Park.”

The project, including materials, landscaping and installation of the seating and water station, has been funded by council at a cost of $19,000.

Two additional picnic tables are scheduled for installation near the playground in February 2022.

REST AND REFILL: A new water station and bench seating at Mansfield Botanic Park has been funded by council at a cost of $19,000.

Bonnie Doon Community Centre to be restumped COUNCIL is set to commence work on the restumping of the Bonnie Doon Community Centre.

Mansfield Shire mayor James Tehan said the community centre provided an important hub for the Bonnie Doon community.

“The Bonnie Doon Community Group campaigned to save the

building after the school closed in 1999,” said Cr Tehan.

“We’re proud to honour their work by maintaining the building for future generations.

“The works will ensure the integrity of the structure, allowing the facility to continue to safely serve the community

for many years to come.”

Bonnie Doon Community Centre is located at 75 Arnot St, Bonnie Doon and will be closed to the community for the duration of works.

Works are scheduled to begin on January 18 and expected to be completed by February 11.

The Old Library building and

Bonnie Doon Op Shop, which share the community centre site, are not impacted by the works and will continue to operate in line with their scheduled open hours.

The project is budgeted to cost $20,000 and is fully funded by Mansfield Shire Council.

Transformer shooting in Tolmie POLICE are appealing for public assistance to identify a suspect after a power pole transformer was damaged in Tolmie on Christmas Eve. At approximately 10:15pm on the evening of Friday, December 24, the transformer was shot at with a high powered rifle at Masons Rd in Tolmie and a vehicle was soon after heard travelling towards the Mansfield-Whitfield Rd. The incident caused a power outage affecting local residents on Christmas Eve and the value of property damaged is estimated to be approximately $10,000.

Any person that could assist with identifying a suspect is encouraged to contact the Wangaratta Crime Investigation Unit on (03) 5723 0888. Alternatively an anonymous report can be made to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POWER OUT: This transformer was damaged by gunfire on Christmas Eve in Tolmie.

Police investigate fatal crash in Tolmie POLICE are investigating after a fatal crash in Tolmie on Monday afternoon last week.

Emergency services were called to Mansfield-Whitfield Road on Monday, January 3 at about 4.45pm after reports a single-vehicle crashed near Old Tolmie Road.

The sole occupant, an 18-year-

old Rosebud man, sadly died at the scene.

Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police statistics note six fatalities on Victorian roads in the New Year to date - a 50 per cent increase on this time last year.

TAC notes two of these as being motorcyclists and at least four aged between 16 and 20.

Erratic driver arrested after Merrijig collision A DRIVER has been arrested after allegedly colliding with a police vehicle in Merrijig last Thursday night.

Officers were called to Mount Buller Road after reports a car was driving erratically and swerving across lanes about 9.05pm on Thursday, January 6.

Police responded and detected a white Toyota Landcruiser utility travelling at speed towards them.

The four-wheel-drive veered into the centre of the road before allegedly colliding with the side of the police vehicle.

The driver allegedly failed to stop and continued on at speed.

Two officers were assessed by paramedics at the scene but luckily sustained no physical injuries during the collision.

The police vehicle was towed from the scene with extensive damage.

Shortly after, police were called to an address in Merton after reports a damaged vehicle was parked in a driveway.

Officers attended and arrested a 31-year-old Merton man nearby.

He was taken to hospital for observation.

Anyone who witnessed the white Toyota utility driving erratically in the lead up to the collision is asked to come forward to investigators.

ATAR results a tribute to Steiner students’ commitment YEAR 12 students from Mansfield’s Steiner School are celebrating an exceptional achievement, with the group of six averaging an ATAR score of 91.3, with two students attaining an impressive 97.9.

The first year 12 students to graduate from the school - and the first to undertake the International Baccalaureate Diploma as part of the school’s curriculum - Steiner has recognised the six students as trail blazers.

An academically rigorous, international pre-tertiary certificate, the IB Diploma requires students to select a subject from each of the six subject categories: Mathematics, Sciences, Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, and the Arts.

dertake three core subjects, the Theory of Knowledge, which is an exploration of the nature of knowledge, the Extended Essay, a research study on a subject interest area, and Creativity, Activity and Service.

Results were released on Monday, January 3 by the International Baccalaureate, with scores awarded out of 45, which are then converted by VTAC to ATAR scores for tertiary admission.

For the school community, the results validate the hard work done towards and conviction behind offering the IB Diploma to local students, and for Fran Cummins in her final year

as principal (after working at the Steiner school for 25 years) it is a fitting finale.

“We wanted to be able to offer students in Mansfield another year 12 option; to be able to access an education that they would previously have to leave home for,” said Ms Cummins.

“We actually began the discussion when this year’s cohort were in grade four, and we wanted to continue the school into senior secondary.

“It strengthens our community to keep our young adults in Mansfield.”

The resulting process of accreditation was a lengthy one, with the school expected to meet quite stringent criteria after a period of mentorship and assessment.

All teachers teaching the diploma curriculum were also required to undertake

additional training to be able to deliver an IB accredited education.

“We are very lucky in Mansfield to have such high calibre teachers, who have either retired here or moved for a change of pace, and the results in part are a testimony to the dedication of the staff,” said Ms Cummins.

“Many schools that offer an IB Diploma to students also offer a traditional VCA education, so to solely concentrate on achieving an International Baccalaureate was a leap of faith “The holistic approach of the diploma complements the Steiner ideology, however, it was still an unknown for parents and students alike to entrust their senior secondary education to what was a completely new program at the school.

“The work load initially was quite a challenge with students expected to complete subjects that may not necessarily play to their strengths, however, the year twelves’ commitment to achieve their best has been recognised in these outstanding results.

“The entire school community is incredibly proud of their achievement, and we are referring to the group as the Sensational Six.” Year 12 student Mani Foubister said that the last two years have been challenging, but hugely rewarding.

“We all put in so much effort and it has been amazing to see it pay off, not only in the fantastic scores everyone achieved, but also the experience, knowledge and perspective we have all gained through the unique

IB program,” Mani said.

“I’m hugely grateful to have had such a wonderful education, to have had such a great cohort and the amazingly dedicated and supportive teachers deliver an international standard program to us in a small country town.

“Even without taking COVID into consideration, the last two years and the IB have been tough.

“But now it’s over, it feels worth it and I’m excited to have the score I need to be able to enter the course I want.”

Some students already had pre-offers on university courses including Marine and Antarctic Governance, Fine Art, Environmental Science and Engineering, with the others now looking forward to considering their tertiary offers.

Local MPs call on governments to do better with COVID

NORTH East based state and federal MPs have called on respective governments to do better for regional communities in the face of the latest COVID crisis.

Victorian MP Tania Maxwell on Friday wrote to Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley, seeking an “urgent assurance” that the State Government will make rapid antigen test (RAT) kits quickly and readily available to alreadyvulnerable regional and rural communities, businesses and services in Northern Victoria.

“People in the communities I represent are struggling to access PCR testing, where necessary, and are confused by public health informa-

tion about isolation requirements,” the Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party MP wrote, seeking the government urgently put in place a public health information campaign that keeps people informed and safe.

Meanwhile, Indi federal independent MP Helen Haines on Friday strongly criticised the Federal Government for what she said was its “failure” to support regional Australia in the Omicron outbreak.

CFA mobile task force to assist with planned burns A MOBILE planned burn taskforce of more than 400 will be available to assist local brigades in managing fuel access in the North East if required.

Made up of CFA members from around the state, the task force will be deployed to support brigades who are unable to source enough firefighters to undertake planned burns during fire season, which is now in place across the region.

According to project manager Terry Ouroumis, the task force had been conceptualised in 2016, before it was finally implemented this summer.

“The concept was to try and get a mobile workforce, specifically for planned burning, that is ready and

available to help out with fire prevention activities and burning across the state,” he said.

“If the local area isn’t able to sufficiently resource volunteers for a burn that’s ready to go, then the task force is activated, and a request is sent out to help bolster personnel to a burn.

“We talked about having a group of members with enthusiasm and who wanted to embrace planned burning and fire prevention.”

The task force has been activated a number of times across the state already this year, including attending a planned burn near Longwood, just south of Euroa.

While the task force is primarily utilised by CFA crews, other fire agencies

were able to request its assistance when needed, according to Mr Ouroumis.

“Task force members could be requested for a single day, but they’re usually multi-day tours,” he said.

“We try to cap it at a maximum of four days though as our members are volunteers of course, and they’re leaving their homes to help with these very important bushfire mitigation activities.

“We can fill specific roles that are needed for specific burns, and we can also help volunteers gain valuable experience if that’s what they need.”

Premier’s ‘treason’ court case debacle

LUCKY CATCH: Local fishermen have the chance of pulling up a $10,000 trout.

Golden Tag competition extended for another year ANGLERS across the state now have another year to try their luck at catching a Golden Tag fish worth up to $10,000, with the Andrews Labor Government announcing the competition is extended until December 31, 2022.

Launched in February 2020 to encourage visitation to the state’s North East and Gippsland following the season’s devastating bushfires, the competition was later expanded state-wide to support local

businesses following pandemic restrictions.

Minister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne said more than 950 tagged fish are still uncaught, swimming in waterways right across the state, including at Lake Eildon, the Goulburn and Ovens rivers in the North East, Lake Purrumbete in the south west and the Kings Billabong in the north west.

“By extending this competition, we can continue contributing to

improved tourist rates and regional economies across Victoria, while also encouraging more people to go fishing, more often,” said Ms Horne.

Tagged species include Murray cod, golden perch, rainbow and brown trout, southern bluefin tuna and yellowtail kingfish, flathead, bream, estuary perch, luderick, King George whiting, silver trevally, tailor and Australian bass.

The majority of fish are worth

The Golden Tag competition presents a great opportunity for locals to wet a line in their favourite spot close to home and encourage recreational fishing tourism, which has enormous economic benefits for communities.

AN application to prosecute Premier Daniel Andrews was thrown out at Myrtleford Magistrates’ Court recently.

Approximately 950 people joined the court’s Webex link, with Mr Andrews scheduled to be personally prosecuted by local man Anthony Herman under charges Mr Andrews was “concealing an overt act of treason” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The influx of people posed significant technical difficulties for the court, with proceedings descending into chaos.

Others took phone calls while in court, leaving criminal matters set to be heard before the court to suffer from significant delays.

Some attendees expressed their concerns the video link was a fake, designed to distract from the actual hearing, after proceedings had yet to begin shortly after 9.30am, despite the matter being listed for 10am.

Despite his best efforts to quiet the crowd, Magistrate Peter Dunn was forced to stand down from the bench shortly after 10am, with the online hearing cut before the matter could be formally heard.

Outside, a crowd of people gathered to protest against the Victorian premier, with one local stirring onlookers as he led chants of “re-instate the crown”.

Members of Myrtleford, Bright and Wangaratta police were on hand to oversee the peaceful protests, which a police spokesperson said had attracted almost 100 attendees.

Truck bypass contract awarded to North East Civil Costruction MANSFIELD Shire Council has awarded a $1.65 million contract for Stage 1 of the Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route to North East Civil Construction.

Works are scheduled to begin in January 2022.

Mayor James Tehan said this was a great step forward for the project.

“We’re pleased to have been able to progress this project, which has been sitting with council for years,” said Cr Tehan.

“It was a competitive and thorough tender process.

“Local contractors were included and considered.

“Council has decided to award the contract to North East Civil, based in Bright.

“With an increase in trucks on the Maroondah and Midland Highways, community safety is enhanced along these routes by redirecting heavy vehicle traffic away from the school and central business districts.”

The project is split into two stages.

Stage 1 of the project will include upgrades to the road from the intersection of Withers Lane and Maroondah Highway, along Withers Lane and Dead Horse Lane.

Stage 2 will include works along the second half of Dead Horse Lane, Mansfield-Whitfield Road, Mt Battery Road and Greenvale Lane.

Roadworks for Stage 1 will begin January 17 and are expected to continue through to the end of July.

Works include kerb and channel earthworks, bitumen surfacing, culvert construction and line marking.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Mansfield Shire Council, which has budgeted $2.6 million for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the project and has received $1.95 million from the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.

Regional crime watch Murder trial lengthy wait THE trial of a Wangaratta man charged with murder could potentially stretch into next year, with extensive delays anticipated as the case traverses through the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Zachary Johnson, 18, was arrested on August 21 last year, following the fatal stabbing of fellow Wangaratta resident Jaxen Henderson-Gillespie at Scout Park in Wangaratta.

Johnson was charged with murder, and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

Details of the fatal incident were read to the court early last month, when Johnson was granted bail by Judge Lex Lasry following a twoday bail hearing.

Prosecutors are set to allege Johnson stabbed the victim in the neck at around 5.45pm, before fleeing the scene and making a number of emotional calls to his girlfriend explaining his belief he had accidentally killed someone.

The victim was declared dead at the scene shortly before 7pm.

Johnson’s mother would find him at his sister’s house, preparing bloodstained clothes, shoes and a knife in a

bag which he said were to be surrendered to police.

He attended Wangaratta Police Station at around 7.20pm in the company of his mother, after making a number of abrupt calls to the police station an hour previous, both of which he promptly hung up on.

It’s established Johnson and the victim were not well known to each other, instead associated through a third party who was also present at the altercation.

The court heard Johnson had endeavoured to buy drugs from the victim, and had previously asked a friend to sharpen a knife for him as protection following historical disagreements between him and the third party who was to be present.

Johnson alleged after initially meeting with the pair, he was set upon and repeatedly assaulted by the victim and the third party, at which time he swung with the knife and connected with the victim.

The accused was bailed under strict conditions, and is expected to reappear in court in the coming days.

Dangerous driver caught A DRIVER caught travelling at almost 70kph

over the speed limit on the Hume Freeway has had his driver’s licence suspended, after he was intercepted travelling southbound near Glenrowan on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Portarlington man was clocked speeding at 179kph at 5.15am by Wangaratta police members, as he and two passengers returned home from a trip to the Gold Coast.

First Constable Matt Jones of Wangaratta police confirmed the vehicle’s owner had been a passenger at the time of the interception.

The vehicle was subsequently impounded, and the driver’s licence cancelled, with the 26-yearold expected to be charged on summons to appear at court later this year.

Three Christmas fatalities leave lasting impact INVESTIGATORS are yet to determine the circumstances of a single car collision which claimed the lives of two Yarrawonga men near Chiltern on Boxing Day. Emergency services were called to Chiltern-Rutherglen Road at around 9.15pm

after reports of a crash near Whistler Track, with responders locating a 30 and 36 year old deceased at the scene.

The crash followed a fatality at Katunga on Christmas Day, when a car driven by a 57-year-old Katunga man collided with a vehicle towing a caravan.

The two occupants of the caravan-bearing vehicle were uninjured in the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Labuan and Spences roads at 2.40pm.

Wangaratta Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Sarrah O’Keefe said the trio of recent fatalities in the local policing district were particularly awful around the holiday period.

“These families impacted are going to feel that every year at Christmas,” she said.

The three North East fatalities make up half of the additional lives lost on Victorian roads since December 17, taking the state’s road toll to 232 for the year, a significant increase when compared with 210 in 2020.

A day at the Merton Races

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY THEY came in droves to the annual Merton Race Day despite the heat of the day which reached almost 40 degrees.

The five race card started with a six horse event commencing at 1pm.

At the same time the first of the Fashions on the Field was set to run starting with the Tiny Tots; fashions being outstanding and setting the theme for the day.

All up were 13 categories to be judged with guest judges Julie Duncan from Mansfield and Naomi Vos from the Mornington Peninsula being given some very difficult decisions to be made over the afternoon.

Every child that entered the fashions were given a gift whether they were placed or not.

This year’s organiser for the fashions was Gwenda Tait with a small band of helpers for the day.

THE ongoing decline of Australia’s Bogong moth populations has been officially recognised by world authorities, with the species now listed as endangered on the global red list of threatened species.

The moths were among 124 new entries for Australian wildlife added to the list this month by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Once in their billions arriving in the alpine environment during spring, researchers began to notice a fall in populations as early as the 1980s.

However, numbers became almost untraceable in 2017 and 2018, with a study revealing the decline being as high as 99.5 per cent.

The moths are not only important in their own right, but a critical food source to animals such as the mountain pygmy possum which are themselves trying to come back from the brink in the Victorian alps.

Remote water tanks to protect communities from bushfires

Euroa saleyards break records More than 18,500 head of cattle were sold through the Euroa saleyards in the last financial year and in 2021/22 Strathbogie Shire Council invested more than $200,000 to this service.

Council officials said they have worked hard to ensure the Euroa saleyards facility has continued to operate during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

They recognise the importance of this selling facility to the farming community and the region’s economy.

During the last financial year 13 sales were conducted in the 221-pen complex, with more than 18,500 head of cattle sold.

This is almost 2000 head of cattle more than the previous 12 months.

The saleyards are now famous for the Black Angus Feature Sale, held on the first two Wednesdays in December where over 4500 head of cattle sold for a total of more than $11 million over the two weeks.

THE Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has substantially increased the number of senior executives in their ranks while cutting vital field staff over the last financial year.

Senior DELWP officials were unable to fully explain a loss of 133 full time equivalent field staff across the financial year when questioned recently at Parliament’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC).

Member for Euroa and Deputy Nationals leader Steph Ryan has lashed the Andrews Government for cutting field staff, including project firefighters, while employing more people to shuffle paperwork.

“The department’s annual report shows there has been a steady erosion in numbers of frontline staff employed to deliver vital services on the ground,” Ms Ryan said.

“Rural communities are frustrated by the government’s failure to carry out basic weed and pest control.

“Instead of employing yet more people to write policies and media releases, it should be investing in the frontline staff tasked with managing public land.”

Ms Ryan is calling on the government to explain what frontline roles were no longer being fulfilled after such a significant reduction in field staff.

FIREFIGHTING aircraft will have greater access to secure water supplies in remote forest areas in North East Victoria A $1.42 million water tank project funded by the State Government will see 25,000 litre concrete water tanks strategically placed in four remote areas

by Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVIC) to give firebombing helicopters an additional resource to refill their water stores during an emergency.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’ambrosio, said the increased access to water will reduce helicopter turnaround times, thus improving the effectiveness of firebombing operations with helicopters able to get water and foam on a fire more quickly, increasing the chances of first attack success.

The first installation will be at Dunstans Road in the Upper Murray followed by Mt Sarah and Kate’s Track Tea Tree Range, Mt Selwyn Creek area and Matlock.

Firefighting aircraft support the work of firefighters on the ground, machine operators and experienced contractors who rapidly respond to fires on public land.

Rosehaven Bereavement Support Group commences STARTING February 2022 Rosehaven will be hosting a facilitated bereavement support group in ‘Bob’s Shed’.

The group is open to anyone in the local community who has been bereaved.

“The death of a loved one is often accompanied by significant change and upheaval in a person’s life,” said Alicia Follett (BPsychSc), Rosehaven’s grief and bereavement coordinator.

“It is important for people to know they are not alone, and they do not have to carry their grief alone.

“Grief is a natural response to loss.

“If you’ve been caring for a family member with a terminal illness, you will have been preparing yourself for the day the pain ends. But that does not necessarily make the loss easier.

“Experiencing a range of

intense and sometimes conflicting emotions such as sadness, relief, anxiety or numbness is normal, as are physical symptoms such as difficulties with sleeping, memory and concentration, and feeling restless or hollow.

“Rosehaven would like you to know you are not alone.

“Our qualified staff are available to support you, your family and carers

through this difficult stage.

“You are welcome to attend on a regular basis or casual.

“This will be a place where friendships can be developed, where people are able to feel safe and supported, sharing memories of their person.”

New site to manage widespread pests in North East A NEW free and accessible website has been launched to assist land managers, pest controllers and community groups to manage rabbits, gorse and serrated tussock on their properties.

The virtual extension officer website (VEO) was developed by the Victorian Gorse Taskforce (VGT) in collaboration with the Victorian Rabbit Action Network and the Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party, to help people take control of pests.

Agriculture Victoria biosecurity leader Nicole Garfi said rabbits, gorse and serrated tussock are widespread in Victoria and impact agricultural productivity and the environment.

“The VEO was developed to enable landholders battling one of these species, to replicate their individual situation online and gather relevant information, in one location, without leaving their home,” she said.

“In just four clicks of a button, the user can choose their property location, species, infestation size and type of control they are interested in, and the VEO will advise the most appropriate methods of control.”

NEW PEST CONTROL: A new website has been launched to assist manage rabbits, gorse and serrated tussock on rural Victorian properties.

According to Ron Cosgrave, VGT chair, communities battling rabbits, gorse and serrated tussock will find great value in the website.

“We have tried to simplify finding best practice information for those affected by these species, so they

can apply it to their own situation.

“We hope it gives people the right advice and a little bit more confidence to start effectively managing their pest species,” he said.

Funding for the website was provided by the Australian Government Agricultural

Competitiveness White Paper in collaboration with Agriculture Victoria.

THE Jamieson CFA have answered emergency calls over the Christmas and New Year period, with the call to Gaffney’s Creek to a road accident.

Then there was a grass fire at Eildon where many local fire brigades were called to the fast growing emergency.

However, with the call responded to by closer brigades, the emergency was dealt with.

The Jamieson callout was revised and the crew returned to the Jamieson fire shed.

This tightknit team of volunteer firefighters often have interruptions to normal and social activities, as do all those who work so hard to keep us safe.

THE Jamieson Brewery and Grill hosted a New Year’s Eve event with a previously booked entertainer who cancelled on the day.

Kevington resident and local entertainer Denis Tucker was called and asked if he would play for the guests and filled the bill.

Denis wowed them with his capacity to read the audience and keep them at the peak of celebration, for the entire evening and duration of the New Year gig.

Talk about the inevitable

WE plan for special family events right throughout our lives: eg, notable birthdays, weddings - details for the perfect service, music, reception.

Similarly, we plan all the aspects of an upcoming birth, and the setting up of a new baby’s nursery.

Throughout our lives there are difficult decisions needing to be made.

Some we can make without referring our ideas to anyone else.

Some decisions, however, need to be discussed more widely, simply because they involve others in a major way.

One such discussion would be about ‘death’.

Why would we leave it to others to make all the decisions on our behalf about how our final days will be spent?

Some of us become anxious at the very mention of the word death; others might say, “I don’t want to talk about it”, while still others try to laugh it off and say, “Time enough for that later”.

All of which is why we have largely left it to our families to make the hard decisions that include our medical and endof-life wishes.

The reality is that death will occur at some point for each of us, and our family or friends will be the ones who will have to take care of what has to be done.

So why wouldn’t you want to be part of that discussion while you are able?

The Mansfield Life’s Circle - Let’s Talk About It Group is offering an opportunity for a bird’s eye view of how this conversation might begin.

You can join them at the Mansfield Performing Arts Centre to see a play which examines many of the issues surrounding end-of-life matters.

Mansfield Shire Council has provided a grant to enable and promote community conversations about end-of-life issues by means of this play.

In February, Life’s Circle will be presenting ‘The Last Waltz’, starring Rose Sexton and Bec Bolwell.

All proceeds will be donated to Mansfield’s Rosehaven Hospice.

Performance Date: Friday, February 18, 2022.

AUSTRALIA’S regional news services will be the focus of a new Parliamentary inquiry.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts will hear evidence on newspaper services in rural, regional and remote areas.

Committee chair Dr Anne Webster MP said that local news is a vital component to an interconnected community, and a thriving democracy.

“Particularly so in smaller markets, having a choice in where to access your news coverage is not always possible,” she said A recent survey has found that Australians living in regional communities are far more likely to go to their local news or newspaper website for information than other accessible online sources like search engines, social media sites or local council websites.

“At a time when many regional and remote newspaper services are shutting down or moving online, it is vital that we understand the needs of regional communities, and how heavily they rely on their local newspapers to stay connected,” Dr Webster said.

As part of the inquiry the committee will examine the impact of decisions by large publishers to suspend publication of print editions; entry into these or other markets by new operators, particularly small businesses; impact of the NewsMedia Bargaining Code for regional and remote newspapers; and the economic recovery in regional and remote markets from the impacts of COVID, and whether this has led to advertising revenue improving.

Not all quiet at the bowls club On the Greens with Pam ZierkMahoney ALTHOUGH many members of the Mansfield Bowls Club took a break over the Christmas - New Year week, not all was quiet at the greens.

Just prior to the break the men held their finals of the club championships with the last game being fought

out by Graham Clements and Peter Roberts.

In a close match which saw the lead change several times it was a final all-out effort by Clements to take out the championship for the 2021/22 season with a score of 25 against 19.

Well done to both Clements and Roberts - Roberts returning to the club this season.

To kick off the 2022 year a special tournament was played on Sunday, January 2 starting with a barbecue tea and then a draw for partners - this being one newer player paired with a more experienced player.

Although the evening matches were more of a social theme it was hoped the newer players would gain

some ‘expert’ advice from their skip and at the same time gain more confidence in their own game.

After two games of eight ends the winners were Pam Zierk-Mahoney and Mark Bettany with a total score of 33 shots.

Runners up were Gwen Gray and Nola Jones with a score of 30 shots.

NATIONAL SPORT

And on Tuesday, January 4 social bowls returned with 24 players taking to the greens for three bowl triples - and welcomed visitor for the day Jim Pearce from Upway/Tecoma Bowls Club.

The winners on the day were Elaine Peterson, Gunter Jarzombkowski and Belinda Snider with a score of 32 shots.

Runners-up were George

Peterson, Howard James and Kevin Nikkolson.

Social bowls were held again on Friday and will be played each Friday afternoon from now on while Tuesday’s matches will return next week for the Home Pennant series.

Pennant bowls also returns this Saturday with all three divisions playing at home.

Zak Crawley is England’s future: Michael Vaughan

ZAK Crawley has emerged as the harbinger of hope for England on an Ashes tour that has otherwise foreshadowed a bleak future.

Crawley scored freely, quickly and confidently on Sunday in a fashion that belied his age, lack of experience in local conditions, and Australia’s star-studded attack.

The 23-year-old, who put Mitchell Starc’s nose out of joint with his chat earlier in the SCG Test, pulled powerfully and drove diligently.

Crawley was unable to register England’s second hundred of the series, falling for 77 when trapped lbw by Cameron Green late in the morning session.

But the youngster’s performance was notable in the context of England’s brittle batting on this tour, and the side’s revolving door of openers since the rock-solid combination of Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook.

“Real promise from Zak Crawley. There’s the future for England,” former captain Michael Vaughan said on Fox Cricket.

“He must be given a long run, opening the batting.

“This is the player England have to give a long run in the side.”

Crawley’s intent in his 100-ball stint at the crease matched pre-match comments about how this Test would be “easier” than the Boxing Day Test. “Having watched the Ashes a fair bit, I feel there seem to be a lot more runs here (at the SCG). I am looking forward to that,” he said.

Crawley’s exclusion from Tests in Brisbane and Adelaide raises yet more questions about the visitors’ selections on this trip.

England logged opening partnerships of zero, 23, seven, four, four, seven and 22 in this series prior to Crawley and Haseeb Hameed’s 46-run stand at the SCG. Hameed’s miserable tour continued in his second dig at the SCG when caught behind on nine, having failed to add a single run after being dropped by wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Hameed has 80 runs at 10 this series, putting him at risk of setting an unwanted record if retained in England’s XI for the Hobart series finale.

Need Djokovic at the Open: Kyrgios NICK Kyrgios once said he could not stand Novak Djokovic, describing him as “a tool”. Yet he has now become one of his old foe’s most unlikely and sympathetic backers, declaring that Djokovic hasn’t been treated humanely and that tennis really needs its world No.1 back at the Australian Open.

As Djokovic underwent another night at the immigration detention hotel In Melbourne preparing for Monday’s legal hearing over whether he can stay in Australia and defend his title, he’ll doubtless have

been touched, and a touch amazed, to hear of his unexpected new champion.

Back home in Serbia on Saturday, Djokovic’s family held a rally in support of him in Belgrade for the third successive day while Prime Minister Ana Brnabic promised him the full weight of government support over his visa battle to ensure he could enter Australia.

“We’ve managed to make sure gluten-free food is delivered to him, as well as exercising tools, a laptop and a SIM card so that he is able to be in contact with his family,”

the PM explained.

So, no surprise there.

Yet more shocking to Djokovic may have been the increasing sympathy he’s received from the most high profile Australian men’s player, Kyrgios, with whom he’s previously appeared to share the frostiest of relationships.

“Honestly, I hope it all gets sorted as soon as possible. For the sport, we need him here, it’s that simple,” Kyrgios said.

“He’s one of the most influential sports people, probably of all-time. If he’s ready to play and he’s allowed to play, I think it’s in a way good for our

sport with all this attention.

“His life’s probably hard enough as it is, and I know what that’s like.  “I’m feeling for him now.

Like it’s not really humane, is it, what’s going on?”

Djokovic has also found support from his old friend, another former Australian ‘enfant terrible’ Bernard Tomic who, like Kyrgios, said he wished the situation surrounding Djokovic’s visa exemption had been handled very differently.

Djokovic, who is seeking a record 21st grand slam at Melbourne Park, has said in his

legal challenge that he’d been given the medical exemption because he had contracted COVID-19 last month.

His plight has become a diplomatic minefield with claims from Serbia that the 34-year-old is being treated like a prisoner, while Djokovic himself appears to have become a poster boy for opponents of vaccine mandates around the world.

Yet Kyrgios reckoned that his apparent enmity with Djokovic had always been blown out of proportion and he praised the Serb for how selfless he’d been when do-

nating thousands of dollars to bushfire victims in Australia two years ago.

“He’s actually helped us, like he’s reached out. He didn’t have to do that. Most athletes wouldn’t, they’re selfish. So I don’t forget that,” said Kyrgios.

And one thing Kyrgios is sure of. If the champion does get cleared to stay in Australia and defend his title, that famed Djokovic stubborn, bloody-mindedness is going to be even more armour-plated.

“If he’s allowed to play, I reckon he’s going to be pissed off,” said Kyrgios.

OUR dedicated lady golfers weren’t going to let the season’s festivities get in the way of their golf in recent weeks; the quest for a great score continued regardless.

Our lady captain Sheryl Sargent - who quite likes a party didn’t let that get in the way of a fabulous score of nett 67 to win the December Monthly Medal just before Christmas.

Others who also kept their concentration were A Grade runner up Andrea Marsden with nett 69 and the B Grade winner Glenis Skinner nett 71 on a countback to runner up Jenny Koraus.

Line balls went to Sue Parson 69, Kylie Egan 70, Sam Bailey 72, Lesley Anderson 72 and Margie Franke-Williams 74.

Nearest the pins went to Andrea Marsden on the third and

seventh, Jenny Koraus on the ninth, Patsy Smiles on the sixteenth and Sheryl Sargent won the nearest third shot on the eighteenth as well as the putting.

Between Christmas and New Year, it was fantastic to see the course flat out with visitors, who all got to experience what we get to enjoy all year round - a picture perfect course.

A handful of our girls managed to squeeze in nine holes on Tuesday and Pam Abbott took the honours with nett 38.

On Wednesday, 15 ladies played their stableford round of Summer Cup, and it was lovely to see one of our weekender members, Jane Trask (29), take the win with 41 points.

Lesley Anderson (28) also had a great round to be runner up with 37 points.

Line balls went to Kylie Egan and Lorraine Cullen both 34,

Linda Terry 33, Marion Mitchell, Marion Sargeant and Milling Cumming all 32.

On a very hot and humid New Year’s Day, and no doubt with most players enjoying a lie in after a late night, only three brave souls ventured out for the stableford round.

Millie Cumming clearly had had an early night, coming in with 37 points, while Kylie Egan and Marion Foster both should be congratulated for just turning up as well as both scoring 29 points.

Quite a few of the ladies who recently participated in the Get Into Golf clinics have also been getting out on course to expand on their skills which is great to see and we hope to give them some ongoing help over summer.

On Tuesday, a strong field of 11 played stableford off the back tees and it was visitor Bev Kilkenny from Goonawarra GC, who starred with 20 points to win the day and Div 2.

Linda Terry had a good showing with 18 points to win Div 1.

Pam Abbott and Patsy Smiles were the respective runners up in each division.

On Wednesday, we were again joined by visitors who were in the mix, but it was Mansfield girls who took the winnings - Lesley Anderson with a lovely 40 points - best for the day and winner of Div 2, while Sam Bailey took out Div 1 with 39 points.

Runners up were Marg Knapp in Div 1, 36 points and Wendy Rasmussen (from Richmond GC) in Div 2, 37 points.

Line balls went to Marion Mitchell 36, Jacqui Gallagher (Peninsula GC) 35, Nicki Cooper 35, Marion Foster 35 and Lyn Holland 35.

Nearest the pins were Marion Foster on the third, Lyn Holland on the seventh, Millie Cumming on the sixteenth, and Kylie Egan had the best third shot on 18.

Saturday had a good field of 14 and Millie Cumming was the winner with a nice 34 points, from Marion Sargeant 32.

Barrel racing and buckle series complete

By LATOYA WARDS MERRIJIG Barrel Racing has just successfully finished its first barrel racing and buckle series.

The association runs under the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) of Australia in which our top five riders from each division in Open and Juniors have qualified for the World Finals for 2022 held in Perry, Georgia, America.

We are currently the only NBHA

club in Victoria and the club itself underwent a change of new directors and moved the club from Bacchus Marsh to McCormack Park, Merrijig.

We are local riders who have built the club to encourage all levels, ages and genders to the sport of Barrel Racing while also recognising our novice and local riders and being able to send our top riders to represent Australia.

This year is the first year

Merrijig Barrel Racing has held a barrel racing and buckle series and even through COVID we were able to host 10 rounds for the year.

The club has continued to grow in members and riders with the November rounds hosting over 80 horses for the weekend across Open, Juniors and 10 and under.

We also had many sponsors including local sponsors who supported us.

We want to thank all competitors and supporters for their help this year to finally bring my dream of a local barrel racing club to life.

Chaos for Wangaratta and District Cricket Association THE Wangaratta and District Cricket Association was forced to cancel its weekend of matches off the back of a week of constant rainfall.

Wangaratta had 33mm of rain from Thursday to Saturday with the bulk of it coming on Thursday (24mm), making it hard for curators to prepare pitches.

“We had too much rain on Thursday and then I ended up out at Whorouly on Friday and there was a downpour there,” WDCA president Greg Hoysted said.

“As it turned out the weather looked okay for Saturday but the pitches weren’t prepared and the grounds were still soggy.

“There wasn’t much we could’ve done to get cricket going so that was the main basis for our decision.”

Next weekend was scheduled to host a double header of T20’s, however, the association has decided to cancel those fixtures and the

T20 competition due to the current COVID-19 climate.

Instead, the weekend’s cancelled games will be rescheduled to this Saturday, January 15.

“A grade and A reserve were meant to play the second round of T20’s but having teams moving around isn’t ideal in the current COVID climate,” Hoysted said.

“There’s no certainty around COVID-19 so we decided to cancel the T20 competition all together.”

Along with rain, the virus also

played a factor in the cancellation of this round.

“We’ve asked clubs to let us know how COVID is affecting them and some clubs are fine and would’ve been able to field all sides but others would have struggled to field teams in lower grades.

“We’ve said that if any games are affected by COVID we will reschedule them to a later date and if that can’t happen we will make the game a draw and not a forfeit.”

St Anne in fine summer form

IT seems only a few short days ago that we were wishing each other a Merry Christmas.

Now here we are into 2022 wishing everyone the best for the year ahead.

The course is standing up well in these hotter summer conditions with a high number of players, both club members and visitors.

Tuesday saw a good field of 47 contestants in a Stableford event.

The major winners were Domingo Diaz in Div 1 with 39 points, and Jarrod Heath 38 points on a countback from Maurie Walsh.

Div 2 saw Adrian Smith score 39 points, Charlie Heath 36 points on a countback from Chris Kerr.

Thursday’s Stableford saw a great field of 71 players in four divisions.

A Grade winner was Blair St Anne with 42 pts from Rod Sargent 41 pts.

B Grade winner was Jarrod Heath with 38 pts from Nathan Griffiths 37 pts.

C Grade winner was Glen Douglas with 40 pts from Rob Fankhauser 38 pts on a countback.

D Grade winner was Bill Moran 39 pts from Fletcher Cooper 36 pts on a countback.

Some of the highlights of the day came in A Grade where Blair had an amazing round playing off 6.

Rod was pipped at the post for the second week in a row; his round of 41 pts playing off scratch was exemplary.

This equates to -5 off the stick and the handicapper took exception to this score; Rod is now +1 to reward his dedication.

Special mentions to Jarrod Heath for cleaning up the field twice this week and losing a shot, now playing off single figures, well done.

CRACKING FORM: Jack Hutchins hitting off the last tee on his way to his amazing winning round of 48 pts - an all round sportsperson who will be lining up with the Mansfield Eagles this season having finished his AFL/ VFL career.

Fletcher Cooper’s light continues to shine; he has dropped his handicap from 29 a few months ago to 20 this week, an objective he has pursued relentlessly.

Single figures are within reach of this fine young man.

Nearest the pins in order were Rob Fankhauser, Alex Sherini, Blair St Anne, Mitchell Brown, Mark Jones and Mark Korda.

Saturday, New Year’s Day, saw a small field of 27 players line up in a Stableford event.

Ian Jones (24) triumphed with an outstanding score of 43 pts

and runner up with another fine performance was Blair St Anne notching up 38 pts on a countback from Steve Daykin.

Jarrod Heath had another fine game and was accompanied by Mark Jones and Alex Scherini filling the minor placings.

Nearest the pins in order were Alex Sherini, Russell Loughridge, Mitchell Brown, Alex Scherini, Nick Siperki and Russell Loughridge again.

Alex Scherini is rapidly becoming a par three specialist, winning three times this week.

from Garfield Golf Club, had two NTPs and his playing partners stated that he is probably the longest hitter that they have seen; a big accolade as we have the likes of BK, Kyle, Funky, Jack H and Rod. Thursday visitor Mitchell Brown is obviously a very handy player from Kew, playing off +2 and scoring 35 pts.

Funky in fine form

By Laurie Harcus WHAT a week - sunny, wet, thunderstorms, lightning, wet again and some excellent golf played in a variety of conditions on a course that is at its peak following excellent summer rains.

Tuesday saw a good field of 41 contestants in a Stroke event.

The major winners in order were Fletcher Cooper (20) nett 68, Kyle Bridgeman (3) nett 69 on a countback from Greg (Bugsy) Millott (25).

Another fine effort from Fletcher who has now achieved his first golf objective for the year, that is to play off 19 (watch this go down).

Kyle continues to be a very consistent player whose handicap is well down the lower end of the spectrum in the golfing world and is a valued member of our pennant team.

He’s a consistent winner who practices most days.

Greg has returned to the money winners, good to see Bugsy, and watch out the Monday Skins players.

A nice thing about Greg is that he always appears happy.

Thursday saw a great field of 67 players in two divisions.

Div 1 went to Brendan (Louie) Egan (15) with 42 stableford pts followed by Brad Grant (9) with a fine 39 pts.

Div 2 winner was Tom Nicol (25) with 40 pts with Bob Speed 21 runner up with 39 pts.

A great round by Louie who played to 10 and had the honour of chipping in three times (which he asked not to be mentioned - as if that was going to happen).

Brad had a very solid round and is continuing to come down the handicap ladder after stints as both club captain and club president for which we thank him; he must have more time on his hands for practice.

Tom Nicol is having the time of his life with two wins in as many weeks, congratulations Tom. Bob Speed who plays golf more than any other person in the club had an excellent round; he must have listened (for a change) to his friend and mentor Fred Rogers, a former champion and a champion fellow.

Saturday saw 55 players in two divisions play stableford and enjoy the conditions, with a very high average score and place-getter lineballs going down to 34.

Div 1 was won by Mark (Funky) Jones (2); a club champion in recent years with nett 40 on a countback.

Great round Mark and even better leading into Sunday’s pennant match at Benalla against Tocumwal.

Runner up, our evergreen, multiple club champion, the professor in my mind, Mark Bettany, also nowadays a keen bowler and radio announcer with 40 pts as well.

This equated to a fine scratch round; Mark is also representing our town in pennant.

This has been extended a week to encourage more contestants in these great match play events, two ball and four ball, two of my favourite events of the year, alongside club championships.

A great day of picnic racing LARGE and enthusiastic crowds turned out in their summer finest to enjoy a great day of picnic racing at Mansfield on Sunday, January 9.

Strong fields of 10 competitors provided great racing and some thrilling finishes over the six race card.

Veteran Carrum Downs trainer Ray Caldwell took out the Mansfield Hygain Cup in race five with Melinda McDonald riding his five year old mare Material Mistress to victory.

The Timberline Pastoral Maiden Plate was taken out by Unanchored, trained by Matt Ivill and ridden by Tracey Johnson.

The Bartender and Magnusdottir placed second and third respectively.

Race two was the Mansfield Dairy and Food Service Trophy, and it was won by The Brightside, trained by Dan McCarthy and ridden by Jack Virgona.

Calypso Rich and Laststrikeyourout took the places.

Race three was the McGrath Mansfield Open Trophy Handicap.

Foxtrot Mo, trained by Don Dwyer and ridden by Shaun Cooper, took out the honours, with Crooked Creek and Earl of Kendall from NZ placing.

Race 4, The Hans Grimus Memorial Trophy, which ran prior to the Mansfield Hygain Cup, was won

by Marsoom, trained by Katrina McAdam and ridden by Tracey Johnson.

Tofik Tok and Shotchu took out the places.

Local Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan won in the last race of the day, the Canary Capital Trophy, with Outrich ridden by Raymond Douglas, to cap off another fantastic day at the Mansfield Races.

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY THE Merton Amateur Race Club’s annual New Year’s Day meeting is always popular with horse owners, trainers and jockeys, and this year (2022) was no exception.

The six race card had racegoers lining the fence as horses sped down the home straight on what had been described as a good dry track.

On the day there were two outstanding jockeys who, coming

into the final race of the day, had both won two races each, so it was a neck and neck race to see who could take out a hat trick on the day.

In the final straight it was Shaun Cooper who was valiant and was extremely pleased with his efforts for trainer Don Dwyer winning the final two-horse race of the day.

Cooper also won the first race of the day, the second and fourth races.

The other jockey was Grant Seccombe who had a great day riding

the winners in races one and five and of course came in second on the last race.

Both jockeys rode placings in the other races on the card giving them a fantastic day on the course.

Trainer Troy Kilgower also had a great day out taking out two firsts, two seconds and a third placing with his horses.

Rob Kirkpatrick was another outstanding identity on the track being both trainer and jockey and on the day taking one win and one placing.

Tennis ‘21 highlights and the year ahead

By Rhonda Carpenter JANUARY’s tennis club championship included men and women in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.

Sarah Walker won the women’s singles, Jemma Purcell and Sarah Walker won the women’s doubles, and Michelle Pigdon won the mixed with Justin Odd. Dan Robertson and Andrew Downey won the men’s doubles and Matt Daly won the men’s singles.

Juniors Estelle O’Neill and Seb Walker won the St Francis Award for their sportsmanship, attitude, willingness to listen and learn, and general demeanour both on and off the court in the Saturday morning competition.

In March teams contested their grand finals for the three

night competitions, with Justin’s, Stickybeaks and Vardy Party all winning premierships.

An autumn comp was introduced, and men and women competed at night in singles and doubles partnerships.

The winners were in Division 1 Guy Taylor and Jason Blake, Division 2 Hans Lang and Simon Young, and Division 3 Matt Bennett and Ted Lovick.

While the women’s finals were a washout, in Division 1 Emily Dirksen and Ilena Meek finished on top and in Division 2 Fem Leyson and Lisa Morgan finished on top.

Over winter three Mansfield women’s teams completed eight rounds of a shortened season in the Euroa and district competition.

No finals were played but Terip finished on top.

It wasn’t until November that the summer comp could begin after much uncertainty about restrictions.

20 teams hit the courts and junior tennis began alongside Hot Shots on Saturday mornings.

In 2022 tennis gets under way with the club championships played over four nights, Monday, January 17 to Thursday, January 20.

Start times are confirmed as 6pm and spectators are welcome to view the night-time action.

Players are asked to arrive well prior and be ready to commence play on time. Courts will be open from 5.30pm.

The entry fee of $5 per person/ pair for each event entered is to be paid on arrival.

The timing and structure of the champs are now:

Monday, 17/1 - Mixed Doubles, A and B Grade.

Tuesday, 18/1 - Men’s and Women’s Doubles, A Grade and B Grade pairs.

Wednesday, 19/1 - Women’s Singles, A Grade comp only.

Thursday, 20/1 - Men’s Singles, A Grade and B Grade.

The working group will publish the seeded draws including confirmed formats and scoring before January 10.

The annual Terip tournament with alternating mixed-doubles partners will take place on Saturday, January 8 at Terip Terip at 10am.

Regular night comp begins on Tuesday, January 25, and Thursday, January 27, and for Wednesday night February 2.

Junior comp begins on Saturday, February 5.

Basketball heating up over summer ■

From back page Mansfield and District Basketball Association (MDBA) hopes that they can excite local young basketballers who are willing to work hard, and progress into the senior men’s team after they are too old for U18 representative Eagles basketball.

The CBL Eagles men had their first ever home game on Saturday, January 8 at 7pm in the new stadium, followed by a Sunday match at 2pm.

Any locals who would like to come along and support Mansfield’s newest senior sporting team, in our great new basketball facility, are welcome.

CBL normally runs from October to February which is perfect timing for local football and netball athletes to come and see what it is all about.

MDBA would love to enter a women’s CBL team in coming years.

The next three games will be played at home on Saturday, January 22 at 7pm, Saturday January 29 at 7pm and Sunday January 30 at 2pm.

Jakara wins her sixth World Cup medal JAKARA Anthony has claimed her sixth podium of the season, with a silver medal performance at the World Cup mogul skiing event in Tremblant, Canada.

After just missing the podium placing fifth in the previous competition, Anthony was again one of the leading athletes in the qualification and first round of finals, to advance to the super final in fourth place.

In the super final Anthony had another great run scoring 79.02 points from the judges to finish 3.53 points behind 2018 Olympic champion Perrine Laffont of France.

Rounding out the podium in third place was Anri Kawamura of Japan with a score of 78.78.

The podium performance sees Anthony ranked second on the World Cup standings with 365 points, just four behind Kawamura with 369 points,

and 15 ahead of Laffont on 350 points.

“The course here in Tremblant was really fun today, it’s really developed over the four days we have been skiing on it, and very different to the previous course in Alpe d’Huez in France,” said the 23-year-old Mount Buller skier.

“It’s a busy few weeks for us with back-to-back double single mogul events in two different locations here in Tremblant and next week in Deer Valley, which everyone is excited for.

“It’s always a favourite event for the Australian team and the whole World Cup tour, so I look forward to getting back on the Champion run at Deer Valley.”

The mogul skiing athletes will now head to Deer Valley, USA, for the final World Cup events before the Beijing Olympic Winter Games.

Basketball heating up over summer MANSFIELD Basketball were thrilled to host their first ever Country Basketball League (CBL) men’s game on Saturday, January 8 at the Secondary College Stadium.

Four rounds of the CBL competition have been played so far.

The games have been hard and fast and as a team the men are training well and improving each round.

Our game last Saturday night saw the guys within one point at three quarter time, ever so close to the win.

Last Wednesday evening Mansfield Eagles new Country Basketball League (CBL) men’s team held a closed training session at the new stadium, inviting some U18 and U16 boys from the Eagles basketball representative program to make up numbers.

The idea was to have an in-house scratch match and get some of the up and coming local boys to mix it up with our CBL Eagles men’s team.

The game was refereed by local umpires and scorers with a 24 second shot clock in place, as

per CBL timing rules.

This was a first for most of the boys as well as four x 10 minute quarters, with clock stopping on all whistles including timeouts to best replicate actual CBL rules.

The men and boys were split into two even teams

by head coach of CBL men, Jason Campbell, so the boys could get a taste of the speed and physicality of senior basketball.

The boys got to warm up with the men, and join in on the game which was fast paced and exciting for them, with plenty of three pointers and dunks.
