Mansfield Primary School principal Tom MacMunn confirmed that the rapid population growth in the

Mansfield Shire has seen enrolments surge at the school.

“We have had significant growth again in 2021-22 which means our school population has doubled over the last 10 years,” said Mr MacMunn.

“This time last year we

had 487 students and we are now at 520.

“Eighty three very excited preps started with us last Tuesday and our grade four big buddies did a fantastic job at helping them settle in.

“And there are a further 17 students at other year

Woods Point paramedic receives Australia Day honour VETERAN paramedic from Woods Point, Frances Scott, was awarded an Ambulance Service Medal (ASM) in the Australia Day honours.

Ms Scott has been an integral part of the Woods Point ambulance community officer team for 31 years.

As a team leader, she responds to remote jobs, often treating patients and transferring them to Air Ambulance Victoria and flight paramedics before any Advanced Life Support or Mobile Intensive Care Ambu-

lance road crews have arrived, ensuring the local community and ‘out-of-towners’ can receive care despite their remote location.

Ms Scott was instrumental in converting an old hospital into a functioning ambulance community officer station, encouraging others to join, and worked tirelessly towards the fitout of a troop carrier to drive into remote areas to access patients.

“Fran has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to helping the community,

both permanent residents and transient travellers,” said a representative of Ambulance Victoria.

“She has provided medical assistance that would otherwise be delayed and, potentially, lives lost if not for her tireless efforts.

“Her commitment to Ambulance Victoria and her delivery of clinical care to the community for over 31 years has been exceptional.”

Dr Helen Haines, federal MP for Indi, offered her congratulations to Australia Day honour

recipients from Indi.

“The members of our community recognised this Australia Day are selfless and humble,” she said of Ms Scott and the other award recipients.

“They give back to the community, put their hands up when something needs to be done, and ensure others receive opportunities and care where they may otherwise be left behind.”

Ms Scott was one of seven Ambulance Victoria staff to receive the ASM this Australia Day.

Council awarded $300K for recovery projects MANSFIELD Shire Council has been awarded $300,000 toward community and economic recovery projects from the Victorian Government.

Council asked the community for ideas that would help draw people to outdoor spaces, supporting local business with increased visitation.

These ideas have formed a project plan and many of them will be developed with this grant funding.

Deputy mayor Mark Holcombe said that the funding was a welcome boost for local business, which had been hit hard by the impacts of COVID restrictions.

“The ideas that came from the community were fantastic and we are proud to be able to facilitate the works that will bring them to life,” said Cr Holcombe.

“Thank you to all those who engaged with us on the project and contributed their thoughts

and ideas to help us continue to improve our spaces.”

Projects include beautifying areas, process changes to support business and enhanced facilities, such as:  amphitheatre style seating, picnic benches and umbrellas in the median strip;  interactive art in partnership with Taungurung;  shade structures over and adjacent to the Botanic Park playground;

 signage across the shire including town maps;  subsidised permits for businesses ;  additional bins across many locations around the shire.

“The community came up with great ideas that we are looking forward to implementing.

The projects people brought forward that missed out on funding this time will be considered for any future potential funding opportunities,” said Cr Holcombe.

LAST year Jamieson Primary School welcomed new principal Hannah Madin.

Ms Madin took over from Genevieve Bolwell, who spent 24 years at the helm of the historic and wonderful little school.

She was thrilled to begin the new role ‘back home’ in the High Country, having lived near Merrijig before travelling to Perth, Berlin, Tanzania, Beirut, Sydney and Central Australia throughout her career to date.

Jamieson primary wasn’t immune to the challenges ‘the year that was’ presented to the education sector and indeed the broader community.

But they were challenges Ms Madin relished, nevertheless.

“It was definitely a learning curve, but it’s a great community to interact with, really supportive and focused on learning, which was a great start for me,” she said.

“From the start of the year we really focused on school wide positive behaviour and values and forming a learning culture, which set everyone in good stead for remote learning.”

A strong STEM focus (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), which included enhancing digital literacy, coding and even working on robots, promoted strong student-driven learning, which in turn assisted in the transition to remote learning during lockdowns.

“We definitely found students became better at managing their own time and learning priorities, and they appreciated coming back and seeing each other faceto-face and engaging with the physical school,” said Ms Madin.

“We’re definitely prioritising camps and excursions this year because we missed so many.

“It was sad that lockdowns prevented more community engagement, so participation on that front is something we’re all looking forward to this year.

“And we are excited to be working with our new teacher, Mr Joel Wilson, who is joining us from Torquay.”

Alongside the increased boots on the ground activities, Jamieson students are also about to undertake a huge project in collaboration with the school website administrator where they will learn to overhaul and update the school’s current website.

Unfortunately the school had no new prep enrolments this year, but Ms Madin welcomes parents and their children to reach out to find out more about the school’s plans and education offerings.

“Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to organise a tour of the school or arrange enrolment,” she said.

“Our focus is encouraging modern education in a beautiful natural environment.

“And I’m so grateful to come to such a delightful school every day.

“I feel really welcome, and as a community, I think we’re achieving a lot and I’m excited for the year ahead.”

Lead foot flies through Merrijig then back to Taiwan A TAIWANESE man has caught a flight back home following his court proceedings, after last week facing charges of speeding through Merrijig.

The accused, whose visa expired the day he faced Mansfield Magistrates’ Court, said he had lost his job recently due to declining to receive his COVID-19 vaccine.

This followed events police prosecutors alleged occurred in August last year, when the accused was clocked by police radar driving at 170km/h between Buttercup Road and Chapel Hill Road.

RSPCA chase cash from animal cruelty culprit AN Ancona woman who was charged with several counts of animal cruelty in 2018 has been fined for failure to repay court costs to the RSPCA. The accused, who failed to appear in the Mansfield Magistrates’ Court last week, had not paid the court ordered $742.80 in costs incurred by the RSPCA in relation to matters which began in 2017.

An RSPCA prosecutor outlined events from that time for the magistrate rehearing the matter.

In July 2017 the RSPCA attended the accused’s premises in Ancona.

She identified herself as the owner and person in charge of 10 of the 16 hunting dogs that were observed tethered throughout premises.

Inspectors noted two dogs in a noticeably emaciated condition.

When the accused was asked about this she allegedly said she knew it

was not acceptable to have dogs in such poor condition, but she couldn’t afford a vet.

She was issued with two notices to get veterinary care for the canines and to provide proper nutrition and care moving forward.

One of the dogs, a German Wirehaired Pointer, was later examined by a vet who noted its innumerable visible bones and obvious loss of muscle mass.

The vet said that dog was extremely underweight by 10 to 15 kilograms and had been suffering from starvation for some weeks to months and it was obvious to even a layperson that veterinary attention should have been sought.

Repeat visits from RSPCA inspectors over the following weeks and months discovered little improvement in the situation, with no food located at the premises on one visit, to which the accused advised that she’d run out.

Eight dogs were subsequently seized from the property, with an RSPCA vet later conducting blood tests in determining no underlying health issues in four of the emaciated dogs, concluding they simply had a lack of food intake.

The accused declined to participate in a formal interview and was later issued a notice prohibiting her from owning dogs for five years.

The RSPCA prosecutor said the accused had since been ordered more than once by the court to pay their costs associated with the matter, but the monies were still outstanding.

The presiding magistrate, who was unable to finalise the matter, reimposed the costs and imposed a fine of $400 for failing to comply.

The magistrate then referred the matter to Fines Victoria for the accused to organise payment.

The presiding magistrate advised that a mandatory 12 month loss of licence - applicable only to driving in Australia - would apply, and completion of a road trauma course alongside a fine would be imposed.

The magistrate noted the fine would need to be paid and course satisfactorily completed should he wish to return to Australia and drive again, before excusing the accused and wishing him safe flight home.

Haines identifies crucial projects IN last week’s Mansfield Courier (Wednesday, February 2), Dr Helen Haines stated that the Mansfield District Hospital master plan had been submitted two years ago to the Victorian Building Authority with no progress.

We would like to correct this statement, and advise that the Victorian Building Authority does not oversee hospitals and medical facilities, and as a result has no jurisdiction over the master plan.

The organisation responsible for overseeing the plan is actually the Victorian Health Building Authority.

Additional disaster assistance for region after earthquake damage DISASTER assistance is now available in the local government areas of Mansfield Shire and Wellington Shire that were affected by the Victorian earthquake on September 22, 2021 under the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Nationals Senate leader and Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said the DRFA will assist local councils with the costs of repairs and reconstruction of

essential public assets including roads and infrastructure.

“The earthquake event caused severe road cracking near the location of the epicentre,” Senator McKenzie said.

“This financial support will provide cost relief to councils to undertake immediate works and longer-term reconstruction of roads.

“The Australian and Victorian governments are working closely, and we are ready to provide further assistance as necessary.”

It is time council showed all trees over 750mm diameter on the planning scheme maps, plus sizeable clumps of native trees over 10 years old.

Holden Nationals in Mansfield THE Classic Holden Nationals returned to Mansfield over the weekend to complete the festival, which was abruptly cancelled last year due to a Stage Four lockdown.

Scheduled over a five day period, the program of events had been carefully curated to showcase the High Country to hundreds of Holden enthusiasts.

“We also factored in free time every day for entrants; as there is so much to see and do in the area we wanted to give people the opportunity to a bit of exploration of their own,” said Les Adams, operations manager for Autofest, the group behind a calendar of performance car festivals which includes the Classic Holden Nationals.

Classic Holden enthusiasts with vehicles from1948 to 1980 participated in the event, celebrating their iconic vehicles through events like the Show N Shine, cruise drives around the surrounding district, street displays and drive-in nights and an Elvis tribute night.

CLASSIC CARS: The streets of Mansfield became a spectacle of all things Holden on the weekend.

WEEKEND AWAY: Touring was the aim of the weekend, and particpants certainly embraced the High Country exploring all that the region had to offer.

“It was a year ago I went to Mansfield for the Classic Holden Nationals 2021 which was abruptly cancelled for a snap five day lockdown,” said Dale.

“Thankfully 2022 has a different COVID landscape and this year’s Nationals were a huge success.

“I stayed most of the day on the Saturday and got to see a fantastic array of Holdens.

“I tagged along on the mystery cruise to the base of Mount Buller and it was a treat to see and photograph a lot of these cars on the road,” he said.

In recent months, Dale has also started up Yea Cruise Night, which is held on the second Saturday of the month during daylight savings.

“It’s a casual get together of likeminded car lovers, in the beautiful township of Yea,” he said.

“It’s about cruising into town, parking up, and maybe getting some takeaway and just admiring the vehicles.”

By JARRAH LOH MANSFIELD had its wettest January in 26 years with rain last weekend topping up the gauges to 112.7mm for the month compared to a historical 46.5mm average.

Not since 1996 (116.2mm) has there been a wetter start to a year, with previous historically wetter Januarys in Mansfield including 1995 (162.6mm), 1991 (161.4mm), 1974 (122mm), 1956 (185.2mm) and the wettest January on record for Mansfield coming back in 1941 with 190.6.

Heavy rainfalls across the shire last Friday and Saturday nights brought in a whopping 57mm according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

But some other areas in the region recorded even more with Greta, Moyhu and Myrrhee being some of the hardest hit towns with 77.6mm of rain over the two nights and

Whitfield (King River at Cheshunt) having recorded 101mm of rain in 24 hours.

The wet January was off the back of a typical December that recorded 55mm for the month.

The hottest day last month was actually New Year’s Day with a top of 36.9C recorded in the shire, but while most days were over 30C, only four were over 35C, and none over 40C as seen in recent years.

While the temperatures were below average, it might not have felt like it with humidity levels high on numerous days last month.

The reason for the wetter than average weather is due to La Nina continuing in the tropical Pacific which is near or currently at its peak.

BOM predicts that a return to neutral El Nina-southern Oscillation (ENSO) is likely early in the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn.

“We have some of the best attractions for tourists in all of Victoria, but I hear from businesses in towns like Mansfield and Bright, that when they are at their busiest, the internet can’t keep up.

“It’s holding back our local economies.”

“When we look forward to welcoming tourists for a busy summer and are then unable to trade, it’s an issue for both the locals who we service, and visitors to the area.

“We have seen this issue previously with short outages, or delay in data but never to the length and severity of this recent time.

“The issue is getting considerably worse and we are keen to see service boosted to accommodate the levels of data needed in the area before

Indi’s success at mobile black spot funding - But still work to do in Mansfield A NEW report has found Indi is the most successful electorate in Victoria, and the fourth most successful nationwide, when it comes to securing federal funding for new mobile phone towers.

The Connecting Indi report, published by the Independent federal member for Indi Helen Haines, analysed a decade of government data compiled by the Australian Parliamentary Library since the inception of the $380 million Mobile Black Spot Program in 2013.

More than 65 new towers have been built across Indi since 2013, from Cudgewa to Kinglake.

In the most recent round, towers were funded in Burrowye, Koetong, Tawonga and Frenchman’s Gap. “By working together as a community, we have had tremendous success under the federal black spot program,” Dr Haines said.

“But when it comes to better mobile coverage, there is always more work to do.

“There are still so many critical black spots that need funding, especially on major tourist and commuting thoroughfares like Wangarat ta-Beechwor th Road, tourist hotspots like the Violet Town markets, and in bushfire areas where we simply cannot afford to have outages.”

Dr Haines also acknowledged areas that aren’t considered black spots, but have high demands from the growing population and at peak tourist times, need

Dr Haines also released a list of 20 priority black spots that need funding that was compiled with assistance from the Indi Telecommunications Advisory Group (ITAG).

The Indi Telecommunications Advisory Group (ITAG) was established by former member for Indi Cathy McGowan and continued by Dr Haines, a consultative committee comprising representatives from all nine local government areas across Indi as well as representatives from Telstra, NBN Co, and other telecommunication companies.

“Our success is all thanks to everyday people in our communities coming together and working with my office to identify priority mobile black spots which need fixing and put a compelling case forward for funding that is community-led, transparent and responds to real need,” Dr Haines said.

“People contact my office every day about phone and internet issues and the stories are harrowing.

“This week I heard a story where the phone was dropping out during a call to 000, and from an elderly person whose car broke down on a country road with no signal to get help.

“We track black spots closely and ITAG knows exactly where we need funding.

“The real bottleneck is with the government and releasing new funds quickly.”

Median to Rare a DELATITE WINERY sizzling success

By LIZ BANNISTER TWENTY six years down the track, the Median to Rare Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition managed to have its day again on January 22.

The event is normally held during the High Country Festival as part of the Arts Mansfield’s Spring Arts, and was originally postponed due to COVID. It is an event where members of the public are encouraged to view the artworks and vote for their first choice in the adult and youth section.

This year the winner of the exhibition received $2000 and the runner up $1000.

The successful youth entry won $200.

The advertising stated ‘anything goes, anyone can participate’, so this year we saw examples of wonderful wood, assemblages of found objects, repurposed piano parts, metal washer art and forging, mosaic, marvellous metal, wicked wire, mixed media and more.

This year’s winner has supported the event since its inception.

He also recognised the importance of tourism to the Mansfield economy and the employment opportunities associated with this sector, particularly small business.

Mr Lyman, a former Army commando and Indi resident, was officially endorsed as the Liberal Party candidate for Indi for the 2022 federal election a couple of weeks ago.

The father of two children, who hails from Wahgunyah near Rutherglen, has launched his campaign against incumbent independent Helen Haines, Labor’s Nadia David and Greens Party man Benjamin Gilbert.

Mr Lyman served in the Australian Army with postings in Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan in the 1990s and following this, his career has spanned agriculture, manufacturing, operations and logistics - particularly in the wine industry.

 SWEET TREATS: Bake your heart out this Valentine’s Day with this recipe for short bread hearts.

A sweet treat for a sweet someone

THEY say that the way to get to someone’s heart is with food - and what better way to do so than with these short bread hearts?

INGREDIENTS For the cookies: 125g butter, softened 55g caster sugar 150g plain flour 45g rice flour 100s and 1000s to decorate

For the icing: 1 egg white 2 tsp lemon juice 11/2 cups (240g) pure icing sugar, sifted Pink liquid food colouring Egg white, extra, to serve Lemon juice, extra, to serve

METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 160°C. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Stir in flour and rice flour. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth.

Step Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to a 3mm-thick disc. Use a 6cm heart-shaped pastry cutter to cut hearts from the dough, rerolling the excess. Place on the lined trays.

Bake, swapping the trays halfway through cooking, for 10 mins or until light golden. Set aside on the trays to cool completely.

Step 3 To make the royal icing, whisk egg white and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Gradually add icing sugar, stirring well after each addition until smooth, adding more icing sugar if necessary to make a thick paste. Divide into three portions. Use food colouring to tint the portions light, medium and dark pink. Transfer half of one portion to a piping bag fitted with a 1mm plain nozzle. Pipe around edges of one-third of the biscuits. Set aside to set.

Repeat, in batches, with the remaining icing portions and biscuits.

Step 4 Add a little extra egg white and lemon juice to each remaining icing portion to make a runny paste. Spoon a little runny icing into the centre of the biscuits and use the back of the spoon to spread to the border. Sprinkle some of the biscuits with 100s and 1000s. Set aside to set.

Local aged carer champions Nigerian poet to publication POSITIVE stories in a pandemic are as rare as hen’s teeth.

Yet somehow in 2020 it was possible for four people in different countries - one hailing from Mansfield - to meet and unite on a project; a magnificent book from a young Nigerian poet.

This story is somewhat hard to unpack; it all began with a rubbish bin.

At a time when nobody was going anywhere, the bored people at home, the scared people in hospital or out of work, the tired people holding the fort; we had something in common.

We all had to deal with the rubbish.

Somebody on Facebook decided to jazz things up a bit.

Queenslander Danielle Askew began a playful group that reached epic proportions.

It was called The Bin Isolation Outing.

Folk all over the world began to dress up to the nines to put their bins out.

Some celebrated a lonely special occasion with their roadside bin, or sallied out to the kerb in outrageous costume.

One Bin Isolation fan decided to make his own contribution.

Patrick Ezeji from Lagos loves to write and he began to write a poem every single day.

They were poems of inspiration, gratitude, and camaraderie within a suffering world.

Patrick never dreamed of himself as a writer; he just wanted to reach out and share some reasons to be cheerful.

A few of his followers imagined a book in Patrick.

They were Queensland property valuer Andrea Huntingdon, Bundaberg physio Andrea McLaren and Mansfield aged carer Carol Lowden.

They fell into conversation with Patrick about his work and he ultimately wrote 240 poems in six months.

The four disparate people became ‘Team Patrick’, and assembled their skills and contacts to make the book a reality.

This was not the only outcome; Patrick Ezeji and Andrea Huntington are now engaged to be married in beautiful Lagos.

The tropical city of Lagos is the second largest in Africa.

Originally inhabited by the Yoruba people, in the 1970s the population was similar to Shepparton today.

In 2021, the city’s population has grown to almost 15 million.

A mind-boggling place of great poverty and wealth, nowhere is more cosmopolitan than Lagos.

The people are diverse, young, creative, and they live in a city full of beauty and danger.

Patrick is familiar with both represented in his poem ‘Calling In The Air’.

The fountain is bathing the corral, And the pasture where I lay my head Has become my bed.

Redemption is calling in the air, Asking to be heard.

The victory song is echoing near.

The scars and tears I was made to bear, Have come to an end.

Fireys fighting blazes left, right and centre

LOCAL fire brigades have been turning out in force over the past week, with paddock and tree fires from lightning strikes occurring regularly across the Mansfield Shire.

Merton CFA reported turning out four times in three days, requiring multiple resources and appliances to bring blazes under control.

Bonnie Doon CFA experienced similar, with regular photos on their Facebook page highlighting the seri-

ousness of these fires and the potential severity without intervention from shire volunteers.

A CFA spokesperson said a fire near Bonnie Doon last week, which appeared to be dangerously close to transmission lines, was spotted and attended to promptly by local brigades.

“CFA were notified to reports of smoke sighting from a firetower at 15:06 on Monday, January 31,” the spokesperson said.

“Eleven CFA trucks responded, with volunteer firefighters from Bonnie Doon

North East regional news in brief Deluge of rain leaves rocky road for motorists BOGGY Creek Road at Moyhu lived up to its name on Saturday night when rocks and silt from a table drain washed onto the roadway after the heavy deluge that hit the region.

Some 46.6mm of rain blanketed the area on Saturday night and the rocks ended up blocking about 40 metres of road and causing a traffic hazard for motorists.

Motorist Paul Groves was heading home from work at about 9.30pm when he came across the obstacle.

“The rocks were about four inches in diameter and they were like small boulders over the road that needed clearing,” Mr Groves said.

“They were the rocks that council had placed along the table drain as part of remedial works in the area last year.

“The road was a hazard, so I called a farmer and he attended the scene to remove the rocks with his tractor.”

Flash flooding SEVERE flash flooding in Rutherglen and Chiltern last weekend left homes waterlogged and roads inaccessible, as emergency services worked around the clock to respond to torrential rainfall.

Five houses in the Chiltern area were impacted by flooding, while trees fell along kilometres of roads in the region, particularly along Indigo Creek Road and Chiltern-Yackandandah Road.

CFA crews were also called in to assist SES teams at Rutherglen in the early hours of Sunday morning,

after Rutherglen research weather station recorded 47.8mm of rain in a four hour period.

Top honours in Beechworth BEECHWORTH’S Helen McIntosh has been recognised for outstanding voluntary service to the Beechworth community with her appointment to the Order of Australia announced in this year’s Australia Day Honours awards where she will receive a medal of the order (OAM).

“I’m very happy and honoured to be awarded an OAM but it’s surreal to receive one as many people have done similar things,”

the humble 80-year-old said.

Born into a family entrenched in local life, Helen’s passion as a volunteer in the community has been ingrained from an early age with her enthusiasm to help others continuing throughout her life.

Helen said she had followed in the steps of her mother as a dedicated Red Cross volunteer who had been awarded life membership as well as her two late sisters who had been Red Cross members too.

WATER bombing helicopters and forest firefighters on foot and dropped in by air helped contain a fire started by a lightning strike at Mt Buffalo last week.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) Ovens fire district manager, Jarrod Hayse, said rapid storm development saw a lightning strike ignite a blaze on the Seven Mile Spur in Mt Buffalo National Park.

“The blaze was detected by the Mt Porepunkah fire tower and we dispatched two helicopters from Ovens to conduct water bombing operations,” Mr Hayse said.

“We also dropped in rappel firefighters while others walked in on foot and established containment lines, restricting the fire to around 0.2 of a hectare and putting it out before dark.”

Mr Hayse said favourable seasonal conditions - of regular rainfall, cooler temperatures and green undergrowth - had helped with containment of the fire.

Summer fun is far from over at Mt Buller

JUST because the kids are back in school and many of us are tackling our overflowing inboxes, it doesn’t mean the summer fun is done.

In fact this time of year in our region boasts more than our fair share of events and activities as balmy summer days stretch into autumn.

Up at Mt Buller the refurbished bike trails are getting better by the day as the upgrades continue ahead of the Alpenflow Epic long weekend on March 11-13.

This highlight of the summer ride calendar is attracting strong interest with riders and their tribe who are looking forward to an extended weekend of riding and relaxing, on the mountain.

The packed program includes a two-day junior development element to build confidence in young riders, competition for the more serious MTB crew and no

shortage of heart-stopping gravity action guaranteed for spectators.

The event organisers Rocky Trail Entertainment explain, it’s all about ‘letting the trails do the talking’ and with the premiere of the Australian MTB Film Festival there will be plenty to see and do off the trails too.

Coming up soon on February 18-20 is the annual Mind Body Bike weekend which invites women to come together to reconnect, re-engage and recharge.

The diverse program offers a smorgasbord of activities including bike clinics, yoga, mindful movement, creative workshops in everything from plein-air painting, to pottery and Moroccan cookery.

Event founder Narelle Rademaker created Mind Body Bike following the sudden death of her fa-

ther-in-law in 2015.

Her vision was to connect women from different backgrounds and interests and create a welcoming space for self-care, the chance to explore something new and take time to recharge.

The initial concept has grown to now include a youth program with a weekend for men also on the cards.

Foot stomping good fun at Merton SATURDAY kicked off the inaugural High Country Halls Music Festival with a stellar line-up of homegrown and acclaimed artists taking to the stage at the Merton Memorial Hall.

One of four venues chosen throughout the shire, the Merton event was the first date on the calendar, with Jamieson scheduled for early March, and Merrijig and Tolmie to follow in April.

And as the name would suggest all events are taking place in our local halls, with a view to celebrate the unique history of the area through these institutions integral parts of any small community.

The vision behind the festival was to promote the resilience of these communities and townships through music.

MERTON START: The High Country Halls Music Festival kicked off on Saturday night, with the first of four events being held in local halls over February, March and April.

“The festival allows us to gather as a community and have fun together—building relationships and forming supportive networks,” said Margaret Fitzgerald from

the High Country Halls Music Festival Committee.

“And it has already generated great energy and interest in the four outlying communities which are involved—Merton, Jamie-

Full duck season hope

Still waiting on Black Saturday Bushfire Museum and Education Centre STATE member for Eildon Cindy McLeish said the State Government has failed to deliver on its commitment to establish a Black Saturday Bushfire Museum and Education Centre - three years after the project was announced.

“It has been two and a half years since community consultation closed and there are no confirmed details about the project at all - the intended location, content or format of the centre,” said Ms McLeish.

In Parliament Ms McLeish, for a second time, questioned the status and timeframe of the project and outcome of community

consultation which closed on the August 15, 2019.

“The Andrews Labor Government has totally disregarded their commitment to create this important centre and has left the community without.”

Announced in February 2019, the bushfire museum and education centre would raise awareness of the history, stories, and lessons of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires and other fires.

“The museum and education centre will be incredibly important and symbolic to many Victorians impacted by bushfire,” she said.

“Many people are passionate about the development and want to see it happen.”

State gov looks at conservation, recreation and tourism in forests - Strathbogie Ranges included THE State Government is taking the next steps to engage Victorians in determining new conservation, recreation and tourism opportunities in Immediate Protection Areas.

The Immediate Protection Areas − made up of more than 146,000 hectares of state forest located in the Strathbogie Ranges, Central Highlands, Mirboo North and East Gippsland − were protected from timber harvesting in 2019.

Mellissa Wood, chairperson of VEAC, and Nicola Pero, chief executive officer at Food and Fibre Gippsland, have been selected to join the panel.

VEAC is already assessing the environmental, recreation and other values in Immediate Protection Areas in Mirboo North and Strathbogie Ranges.

Work in the Central Highlands

and East Gippsland will start in mid-2022.

The panel will present a report and recommendations to the government on Mirboo North and Strathbogie Ranges in mid-2022.

Community engagement on Central Highlands and East Gippsland will begin later in 2022.

Since 2019 the Victorian Government has added more than 250,000 hectares of protected forests in Victoria - including 96,000 hectares of Immediate Protection Areas, 65,106 hectares for the new Central West National Parks and 90,000 hectares of old growth.

OVENS Valley MP Tim McCurdy wants to see the return of a fully conducted duck season that is appropriately regulated across the Ovens Valley and Victoria this year.

After several years of a shortened season, and reduced daily bag limits for hunters, Mr McCurdy is hoping a full duck season can proceed this year, and with it “tremendous economic benefits to our local regions”.

He accused the State Government of “chasing inner-city green votes” at the expense of legal duck hunters whose presence benefits regional communities.

“Decisions around this 2022 duck season need to be based on evidence and not false ideology,” Mr McCurdy said, noting the need for the Game Management Authority to manage recreational duck hunting on a sustainable basis with limits and season dates set to ensure hunting does not threaten the conservation status of any game species.

Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh also called on the Victorian Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas to announce a duck season in full this year.

“The GMA provided their recommendation to the State Government on January 25 last year, so we know the government has received the advice for the upcoming season,” Mr Walsh said.

“The pandemic, shorter seasons and reduced bag limits has been disappointing for hunters, they deserve a full season.”

Most recent data estimate duck populations have remained strong across Victoria, with numbers between 2.9 and 3.6 million game ducks.

Consecutive wet years, combined with La Niña conditions over summer have only improved populations.

“There is no reason for the minister to reduce bag limits or the length of the season, particularly when other states have just announced full seasons,” Mr Walsh said.

“This is not just about shooting, recreational hunters inject $356 million into the regional economy - a massive boost to our local businesses as they recover and rebuild.

“The minister must announce a full season.

“Anything but is just another political ploy to attract inner-city votes.”

Mr Walsh said rather than harvesting city votes in an election year, State Labor should look beyond the outskirts of Melbourne and support regional businesses and recreators.

North East regional crime wrap Stolen car burnt-out near Euroa POLICE are investigating after a stolen car was found dumped and destroyed by fire in Riggs Creek near Euroa.

Police were called to Riggs Creek Road after reports of a burnt-out vehicle around 10am.

It’s believed the 2006 Holden Astra was stolen from a property in Euroa on January 26.

The exact circumstances of the fire are still to be determined, however, is being treated as suspicious.

Local Richard McGeehan saw it firsthand as the car was discovered close to his property.

“The car was stolen from Euroa, then driven to Riggs Creek Road, a hundred metres from my front gate then set on fire,” he said.

Mitchell Local Area Commander Inspector Michael Layton said last quarter’s crime statistics showed a slight increase in the number of car theft offences in Strathbogie Shire.

“Lately, we’re seeing these offences predominately occurring in residential streets and driveways where cars are too often left unlocked with keys inside,” he said.

Facing Wangaratta Magistrates Court via videolink last Thursday, the 23-year-old, who appeared from custody at Ravenhall Correctional Centre, pleaded guilty to a number of charges including criminal damage, assault with a weapon and threats to kill.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Stuart Pritchard told the court the accused had attended an Irving Street property around 9.20pm on November 26 with another male, brandishing a 40cm long kitchen knife and smashing the windows of a 4WD. LSC Pritchard said an altercation then broke out at the front of the address, after the homeowners arrived to find the pair yelling and threatening

to kill their son, who was taking refuge inside the home.

The accused was said to have attempted to stab the father, narrowly missing the man’s chest before smashing the rear window of the family’s station wagon.

LSC Pritchard said the accused, who police believe may have been under the influence of alcohol, was then “clotheslined” by the father, before he escaped and was ultimately located by police lying down in a driveway further down the road.

He was arrested and remanded by local police on December 16.

The court also heard the accused had been issued an intervention order early last year, after forcibly grabbing a 28-year-old female by the throat several times at a Bindall Avenue address,

before slamming a door causing a window to shatter.

Magistrate Ian Watkins said judgement would be reserved until the matter returns before the court on February 21.

“He’s lucky he’s not on a murder charge he was that out of control,” he said.

$26,000 theft from pensioner a breach of trust A WOMAN who stole more than $26,000 from an 81-year-old widowed pensioner for whom she cared has narrowly avoided a jail term, after her father repaid the sum in full.

The 30-year-old former Wangaratta resident faced the magistrates court, pleading guilty to two charges of theft in circumstances of a breach of trust, after she

dishonestly stole funds under the guise of grocery shopping for the elderly woman in 2020.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Stuart Pritchard told the court how a victim entrusted the accused with her credit card to shop for groceries in May, and ultimately saw her entire pension savings account withdrawn over a 13 month period.

Commonwealth Bank eventually notified the victim of a negative balance in her account in June 2021, leading to the swift arrest of the accused, who promptly made full admissions.

Defence counsel Geoff Clancy said his client had acted to support her own family and four children, who were hit hard during the COVID pandemic.

She has since relocated to Melbourne with the support of her father, who

TWO teenagers allegedly went on a driving rampage through the Buckland Valley on Australia Day. Police said a 16 year old learner driver and 18 year old P plate driver were both seen taking turns driving a four-wheel drive through the Buckland Valley last Wednesday afternoon, and they ran over rubbish bins on Harris Lane and Buckland Valley Road, while also smashing over street signs and crashed into a parked van and fled the scene without leaving any details.

Police intercepted the vehicle and took both teens to Bright Police Station where they were breath tested, and both were found to have alcohol in their system, with readings of 0.174 per cent and 0.145 per cent.

Police have charged both teens with driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop.

Acting Sergeant Brendan Lampkin said both drivers have had their learner and probationary licences suspended and the vehicle has been impounded.

“And later this term we will be building our Ninja Warrior playground that was financed through school fundraising.

“We are also excited to be able to use the Mansfield Sporting Complex for all our physical education lessons now that the secondary college has the use of the dual court stadium.”

St Mary’s welcomed 22 prep students this year, which was an increase on the 19 preps who started at the school in 2021.

“We have noticed a slight increase in enrolments across the board,” said principal Trish Etcell.

“And we have had lots of enquiries from people moving to the region later in the year, and are looking to enrol their children at St Mary’s.

“We place huge importance on meeting individual student requirements, and the smaller year group numbers allow for a really connected school community.

“It’s a lovely nurturing environment.

“We also like to surprise the students at the start of the school year with new infrastructure and additions to the primary school.”

And this year was no different she said, with a new bike and running track skirting the school grounds, which was greeted with much enthusiasm by the returning school community.

Mansfield Steiner School welcomed 21 prep students, which is almost at capacity for the year level and indicative of an emerging pattern with last year also experiencing high demand.

And across the school 35 new students were enrolled.

Two new class rooms are currently under construction, as well as new art rooms and staff facilities.

“We are so proud to be able to offer a pathway through to year 12,” said Glenn Hood, the new principal at Mansfield Steiner School.

“The success of our IB students last year should give our new families - especially the ones whose children are just beginning their journey

with us - confidence in the structures we have in place throughout the school to nurture their children.”

Mr Hood said that the school represents a drawcard to the region for some families.

“As usual, some of the new families to our school are coming from far and wide to educate their children at Steiner,” he said.

Kim Stoney, founder of The Farmhouse, also reported increased demand for the centre’s services, yet was quick to assure that availability still exists in all the childcare rooms, along with before and after school care, and both the three year and four year old kinder programs.

“Enthusiasm for kindergarten is strong, so much so that we’ve dedicated one of our buildings solely to Bush Kinder which is our fouryear old kinder program,” said Ms Stoney.

“Nature Kinder, which is our three-year old kinder program, is now in its own building which has been transformed to specifically cater for the educational needs of three-year olds.

Neither Jamieson nor Merrijig primary welcomed any preps for 2022, which is a shame considering the excellent reputation and resources of both these small schools.

With Mansfield Primary School approaching capacity, it is anticipated that both these primary schools will cater to the increased demand, with families encouraged to enrol students at their designated neighbourhood school.

There was a report on the Jamieson Reserve riverside Jim Black Seat; funds to complete the construction and placement of the public seat are ongoing.

THE Jamieson community have pulled together over the last week; last Tuesday, February 1 a group of local residents and holiday home owners rallied to the call.

With recent heavy rain and strong winds there was a number of fallen limbs and leaf litter on the Island.

Local holiday home owner John Rushen (JR) was asked if he could help clear the road access to the Island with his chainsaw, to cut and remove a very large limb that was blocking access to the Island.

He removed the blockage so the community volunteers were able to commence their vital clean-up.

There was a second call to help on Saturday and a group of keen local residents and visitors again worked together to beautify and restore the area, from the recent weather vagaries.

Tennis beats the heat and braves the cold TUESDAY night saw perfect conditions for tennis.

Sweet Spot continued their winning form in a close match with Grinders, with the Ree-Goodings brothers, Kiera McDonagh and Dion Theodossi cementing themselves in top spot on the ladder.

The Hustlers will need to hustle harder as they went down to the unstoppable Cannonballs.

It all came down to the last game of the night, with Karyn Fraser and Dan Robertson proving too strong for Phil Smith and Brendan Grant.

In the second set Leprechauns David Aldous and Hannah Dolling were a strong combination against Julie Aldous and Cathy Johnstone.

Unfortunately, Cathy had to retire mid set with an injury, and thankfully, was replaced by innocent bystander Chris Hewlett.

The fierce competition continued between both teams, concluding with a positive tie breaker win for Chris and Helen against David and Kim and another long but winning set by

While refreshments were their final business of the day, Liam had the energy to “cooldown vigorously” on the show court.

Bob and Rhonda Carpenter were taking no prisoners in their opener against Kathy Brinkley and Moira Moss defeating them 6-0.

The teams battled the wind and the setting sun, but Bellissimo gained control and took the remaining sets: 5/33 to 1/17.

Goannas included three replacements, Robert Williams, Liam Wilson, and new team member Jo O’Brien to join regular Geoff Hutchison for their match.

Pro Bonos regulars all took the court for a cracking contest.

May run for Mansfield Marathon

THE date has been set for the first Mansfield Marathon with Sunday, May 29 marked on the calendar for the event, with organisers hoping to attract between 300 and 400 participants to the run.

Race director Liam Delany grew up in the region, before returning to live in Mansfield just over a year ago.

During this time he has thrown himself into building up the local athletics club and making the dream of Mansfield hosting a marathon into a reality.

Though initially scheduled for August 2021, lockdowns and restrictions forced Liam to postpone the event, returning in 2022 with a new date and a grander vision.

The additional time has also allowed the Mansfield Little Athletics club to affiliate with Athletics Victoria to be a senior club as well.

“It is probably one of the only clubs in Australia to of-

fer athletics to all ages, and from an organisational perspective it means that any juniors that come through the ranks will be looked after as long as they stay in the sport,” Liam said.

“It also allows us to pool resources, and for a small town that makes sense.”

The additional benefit of the two clubs amalgamating is that Athletics Victoria is now the overseeing body and has thrown its support behind the Mansfield Marathon.

“Athletics Victoria will assist with the overall logistics of the event, assisting with insurance and things like measuring the course,” said Liam.

“It makes the marathon a lot more professional having that association, and much easier to run as an event.

“And rescheduling the marathon has allowed us to finesse the event and alter the date so that it no longer conflicts with the snow season.”

“The beauty of the rail trail is that it allows us to run an effective event without significantly impacting road traffic,” said Liam.

“The surface is also really good for runners and it’s a relatively flat course so it’s easy on the body, compared to road marathons.

“It’s a beautiful course,

and one that I believe is under-utilised.”

Liam anticipates that the event will become a regular fixture on the national running calendar.

“The May timeslot works well for athletes who are looking to participate in the Gold Coast Marathon,” he said.

“There are only a certain amount of marathons that your body can physically do per year, and from that perspective, some runners can use the Mansfield event as a training run in the lead-up,” said Liam.

“The course is not too taxing, and being in late May the weather will be cool and pleasant for the runners, and we believe that the event has the potential to attract up to 1000 athletes once it gets established.”

With the event also offering up a half marathon, a 10 kilometre and 5 kilometre option, as well as junior obstacle course, organisers have catered to all abilities and motivation.

“And if you really don’t feel that you are up to it (but still want to be involved) there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer at the event,” said Liam.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Mansfield Athletics Club, as well as to the upkeep of the local section of the rail trail.

“And though the goal is to position Mansfield on the national marathon calendar, a significant part of the vision involves engaging the Mansfield community and making those connections and encouraging and supporting the uptake of athlet-

ics in the region,” Liam said.

Canavan Ray White have thrown their support behind the run as the major sponsor providing prize money for the marathon, with male and female place getters in first, second and third all walking away with cash rewards.

Sportsfirst have also come on board with Fraser Stevenson sponsoring the five kilometre run.

And Liam is currently looking for other businesses who would be willing to sponsor the half marathon and 10 kilometre run.

Entries are now open for the marathon, with early bird prices for those who commit before the end of April, and discounts available for Mansfield Athletics members.

And for locals who sign up in February, Liam is offering the additional incentive of a free one-on-one coaching consultation to assist with training and preparation before the event.

New date for Tolmie Sports Day THE Tolmie Sports Association have tentatively scheduled Saturday, March 26 as the new date for the 135th Tolmie Sports Day, after postponing this weekend’s event.

“We were adamant that we weren’t going to cancel two years in a row,” said Mike Dance, one of the four organisers on the Tolmie Sports Committee.

“With the uncertainty last year of lockdowns and restrictions, we were unsure as to whether the event would be able to go ahead in 2022, and as a result we started organising the event a little late.

“Then this year COVID struck members and suppliers alike, hampering our efforts, and so we had to make the difficult decision to postpone the day from our traditional February timeslot.

“However, the most important thing is that the event goes ahead.”

Mike has confirmed that the event will be scaled down in comparison to previous years, with the Sports Day confined to the sportsground itself.

“We are very conscious that the event remains viable, and under the current circumstances have pared back the program,” Mike said.

The organising committee anticipate that the equestrian will be two thirds its normal size, with jumping removed from the program this year.

The woodchop will be the same as previous events, and the day will still finish up with the popular dog jump.

“It will still be a cracking day out with a full program, just on a more compact scale,” said Mike.

Mike and the committee are also encouraging anybody who would like to volunteer on the day to make contact.

“Between 100 and 140 volunteers are needed on the day, with admissions alone demanding 18 volunteers,” said Mike.

“It’s a great event to be involved in, and the role requires a few hours work, and then you are free to enjoy the rest of the day.”

Strong showing from Eagles U12 girls rep basketball THE tournament was held in Wodonga on February 5 and 6. In the first game the girls came up against CVBA. Superstar Brydie Thornton scored six goals for the team during the match.

A huge effort by Tigerlee Brackman who also scored three goals.

Zara Yencken and Jade Awty were both relentless in defence and scores were close come half time with only 1 point between the two teams.

The second half saw the girls run away from CVBA with goals scored from Lara Klingsporn and Lily Adams helping the girls get the win with final score 23 to 16.

The second game was tough for the U12s, coming up against the Tumut side.

An amazing effort from our rockstars Sophie Snell and Macey Thornton but unfortunately

Tumut was too strong on the day, defeating the Eagles by 11 points, final score 19 to 30.

On Sunday the girls came back refreshed and rested and were ready to take on the day.

Firstly, they had to battle it out with Echuca.

Brydie and Lara were fierce in attack and managed to both score a few goals each for the Eagles in the first half.

Tigerlee, Zara, Sophie, Brydie and Lily also added to our scoreboard which had the team run away with the lead and smash Echuca by eight points.

Final score 24 to 16.

The next game was a bit tougher coming up against the Bendigo side.

The girls were feeling the pressure, having to get a win to make the final.

They held steady and played

an outstanding game, with a nail biting finish, final score 17 to 14.

The Eagles managed to book a spot in the grand final against the Tumut Timberwolves.

Coached by Glenn Thornton they were in good stead for the match ahead.

All the girls fought so hard all game and never gave up for a second. The Eagles could hold their heads high with the effort they all put in, but unfortunately the Timberwolves showed why they were top of the ladder, coming away with the win and defeating Mansfield by 17 points, final score 14 to 31.

Amazing effort from the whole team, especially Tigerlee Brackman, who also managed to get the award for the most valuable player on the day.

Well done Eagles.

A PERFECT temperature and windy conditions greeted the 13 racers on the start line at Lords Ground.

First off was John Eisner all by himself at 14.30, he was in for a hard ride but was looking fit.

Next was Ian Conrick and David Jagger at 10.30 followed by Micheal Pearce and Steve Curnow at 7.30.

Next was Team Smooth: Steve Duke, Ant Bateup, Tim Ross and Darren Bakker at 4 minutes.

Then the next to go was Team Power of Chris Miller, Bruce Halket, Steve Brown and Dave Moore at 3.30.

The lonely Scratch rider was Josh ‘The Freak’ Hopwood.

All riders were doing it tough into the head wind on the way out, especially Eisner, who was doing a great job staying out in front of the other groups until after the turn around.

Meanwhile Team Smooth were motoring along; they caught Curnow and Pearce just before the turnaround and could see Jagger and Ian ‘The Hitman’ Conrick just behind Eisner who’d already rounded the corner.

After the turn for home Team Smooth lit it up with the tail wind but could see Team Power with all their riders and Josh had nearly bridged to them.

Team Power sent Steve ‘The Beast’ Brown to the front to engage warp speed to try and bridge the gap to Team Smooth.

Meanwhile Team Smooth had picked up the rest of the field and were leading the race; Mick ‘The Hardman’ Pearce was still hanging in and swapping a few turns on his home track.

Team Power had been caught by Josh and were starting to think they could feature in the finish.

Five hundred metres to the finish Team Smooth were still by themselves.

That’s when Tim ‘The Tank Engine’ Ross went to the front and kicked in the turbo with the others barely hanging on to his wheel.

With 200m to go Ant ‘The Young Bull’ Bateup went to the front and wound it up even more, overtaking Tim with Darren ‘Fat Boy’ Bakker and Steve ‘Speedy Gonzales’ Duke in tow.

With a hundred to go Bakker kicked but couldn’t gap the Young Bull; it was a drag race side by side with Bakker winning by the slimmest of margins.

They were followed by Duke and Ross.

Miller and Hopwood came in just 7 seconds behind followed closely by the rest of the riders.

By LAURIE HARCUS WHILE sitting outside looking at and feeling the serenity of the golf course, sipping a cup of tea and reflecting on last week’s golf, it was very apparent that we are so lucky to have many excellent sponsors.

One of our most highly regarded event sponsors is the Millott Concrete Services Family Day, which was held last Saturday in excellent conditions.

Keith, Greg and Ben repre-

sented the Millott family, and they were joined by Greg’s lovely daughter Kristy to be a part of the three generations of the family playing.

It would be a fair assumption that Ben’s young children - the fourth generation - will be a part of the Millott dynasty playing golf before too much longer.

Unfortunately, brother to Bugsy, Rodney couldn’t be here.

A very popular and satisfying presentation was made to the Millott patriarch, Keith, and grandson Ben (a recent club champion) for the 2021 winning family team.

The winners were Aaron Knight, Steve Daykin and Shane O’Brien with a handy score of nett 58 on countback from Cooksey, Walshy and David Joyce (new assistant manager and not a bad bloke).

Third place also with a fine score of 58 and 1/3 was

Ben Millott, Charlie Heath and son Jarrod Heath (who assured me that he was only there to make up the numbers; I doubt that).

The only other notable thing was David Joyce achieving three nearest the pins.

It was so pleasing to see so many ladies playing, although there appeared to be too many Sues in the winning group.

Fortunately there was a Jenny there.

Tuesday’s Par competition had a small field of 17 participants.

Tom Nicol (23) took the honours again with +3 followed by Stephen Cooksey

(19) +2 and Malcolm Griffiths (19) -2.

Three others took home some winnings - Bill Parsons, Peter Dolling and Paul Norris.

Thursday results for the regular Stableford event.

Gold Winner John McCaskill (20) with 45 pts; an excellent result for Macka who is welcomed back after his regular forays to the opal mines of NSW. The handicapper will sort him out soon.

A Grade was won by Geoff Brown (8) with 38 pts, second went to Cecil McIntosh (15) 37 pts and third Robin Pratt (16) with 36 pts.

B Grade was won by Bob

Speed; a fine effort and we will never hear the end of his 38 pts off 21 handicap.

Adrian Smith followed up one stroke behind and Peter Cullen, brother of Bobby, filled third spot with 36, he told me that it was his age...

Monday saw some 50+ young trainee golf apprentices playing 36 holes on our course.

We met many of them last weekend and the youngsters were so nice, polite, well dressed and loved what they had seen so far.

Nice to see Cooksey out there on his alleged day off making sure everything was perfect.

Crow, Kinloch and Koraus win Ambrose THE silly season is over, and golfing is back in earnest with the opening of the NEDGA season held at Wangaratta on Sunday last weekend.

With 56 players in mixed teams and on quite a new layout at Wangaratta, it was great to be out mixing with our fellow golfers from around the traps, for one of the first times in the season.

I am pleased to report that the ladies’ event was won by this writer, Linda Terry, along with NEDGA vice president Jane Boland of Wodonga, with a combined score of 69.

Linda also had a nearest the pin.

The men’s event was also won by the Mansfield pairing of Shaun Wade and NEDGA president Phil Conway, so well done Mansfield.

On Saturday at home, it was the annual Millott Concreting sponsored, three-person Ambrose.

Winners for the ladies was the team of Sue Crow, Sue Kin-

loch and Jenny Koraus.

Runners up were Sue Parsons, Sam Bailey and Lorraine Cullen.

Donna Sedgman had a NTP on the third and the team of Donna, Millie Cumming and Marion Foster had the best third shot on the sixth.

Working backwards, Wednesday was a popular day with 32 ladies turning out in great conditions.

A Grade was won by Patsy Smiles with 38 points to second place Marg Knapp on 35 and third Donna Sedgman 34.

For B Grade, Glenis Skinner went one better to win with a fabulous score of 39 points, Jackie Smithwick was second with 35 and Robyn Bridgewater third with 34 points.

Balls went to Kylie Egan and Sue Parsons both 34, Andrea Marsden and Linda Terry both with 33.

NTPs went to Milllie Cumming on the third, Sue Parsons on the seventh, Lesley Anderson on the twelfth (second shot), Marion Foster on 16 and Linda Brook for her third shot on the first.

On Tuesday, only 6 players found the time and motivation, with Glenis Skinner winning with nett 37 for her stroke round.

Ladies are reminded to get their entries in for the next NE Vets round at Bright on February 21, the Women’s Opening Day at Yarrawonga on February 25 and this week’s Match Play practice can be booked on line in any group for an 8:30 shotgun - the draw will be done the night before.

Lastly, we are very excited that our Div 2 pennant winning team in 2021 has been nominated in the sports team of the year awards, and we look forward to the presentation night on February 16 with much anticipation.

SUCCESS: Jane Boland (Wodonga) and Linda Terry (Mansfield) paired up to win the NEDGA Mixed Opening Day at Wangaratta on Sunday.

Merton fall short against Ovens Valley United MERTON cricketers travelled to Bright to take on Ovens Valley United with both sides playing for second spot on the WDCA C grade ladder.

The home side dominated with the ball bundling out Merton for 53, youngster James Benton top scoring with 11.

Poor shot selection and tight bowling was ultimately the prime cause for Merton’s downfall.

Merton came out with purpose in the field lead by Jarrod Cummins with fire in his belly taking 1/10 off eight overs.

Ross McKinnon 3/16 and Andrew Lockhart 2/20 did well to keep the pressure on trying to defend a small target, and the home side was 3/39 after 18 overs.

The experienced batters of Ovens Valley steadied after drinks to pass Merton’s total and playing out the 36 overs to finish on 6/107.  Merton host fifth placed City Colts this Saturday at the MCG with the home side looking to bounce back with a strong performance.

Sports Team of the Year Nomination THE Bonnie Doon seniors had a cracking season this year, improving to finish in clear second place, with 11 wins and two losses and a strong percentage of 138.79.

The Bombers were in an excellent position to contend in finals footy following a year where the team clearly gelled and produced great results, so it was bittersweet news when the season was brought to an abrupt end courtesy of the ongoing pandemic.

“We’ve come from a long way back,” said coach Ken Murray.

“From winning one game, to six last year, and now to 11 this year, it’s really set the foundation for the next few years.”

That foundation, Murray says, comes from a shift in focus within the club, and a prioritisation on building the

“I think we’ve attracted the right guys, recruited from a reasonable distance and not focused on Melbourne and bigger areas like Shepparton, where travel impacts and they don’t always stick around,” said Murray.

“We’ve focused locally in town, through to Mansfield, Euroa, Alexandra and Yea, and it’s paid dividends, because we’ve picked up some really good guys who’ve gelled together.

“We really focused on setting the

culture last year, openly pushing that ahead of points from the beginning.

“If you just chase wins, something eventually gives.

“You’ve got to build a club from the inside out and not just on a scoreboard.

“It was really pleasing to see them not only hold their own performancewise, but to go from being boundary umpires and running water as young kids, to now playing senior football for the club, that for me typifies the journey and was really gratifying for all to see.”

With the Bombers only dropping a couple of games and in a good position to challenge in finals at season’s end, the results back that the team is on the right path and are worthy nominees of this quarter’s Sports Team of the Year for the past quarter.

NOT many cricketers would hit the winning runs in their first representative match but that’s what Mansfield’s Erin Brond did.

To add drama to her achievement she struck two runs from the final ball of the contest to surpass the opposition’s tally by a single run.

As an award from her team she got to keep the match ball.

Erin was playing for the Beechworth Wanderers, a composite side consisting mostly of Beechworth, Wangaratta and Benalla players.

Other teams in this Northern Victoria Women’s A Grade competition are Shepparton-Youth Club United, Echuca, BamawmLockington United and Leitchville-Gunbower.

With one game and a bye remaining, Beechworth Wanderers are well placed to make the grand final.

Erin said that she has always been interested in cricket.

Each Christmas she would play backyard cricket with her cousins.

Joining in to play competition cricket was prompted by a Christmas present of a cricket bat and ball a couple of years ago.

Since then she has become an integral part of the local Delatite Cricket Club’s Under 16 team and has now played four matches with Delatite’s B Grade side.

Erin admitted that it’s more fun playing Under 16 cricket but that she has learned more playing senior cricket.

Asked about the difference between men’s and women’s cricket she observed that it’s quite similar but that ‘sledging’ is more subtle in the women’s version.

Delatite Cricket Club encourages and supports girls’ and women’s participation in cricket and welcomes them to try out at training on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Lords Reserve.

A Reserve rattled by Rovers

By MARK O’LOUGHLAN DELATITE were able to field a more experienced team for this week’s A reserve match but unfortunately, it made little difference to the current form-line of the team.

Rovers United Bruck won the toss and chose to bat first.

The Delatite fast bowlers were able to take regular wickets early in the Rovers innings, however, runs were flowing from the opposition bat.

The boys were able to consistently bowl four or five good balls every over, but there were too many loose balls throughout the innings which were dispatched to the boundary.

Young gun Trent Berry was the pick of the bowlers with three crucial wickets.

He showed great tactical nous to develop a plan to remove Rovers’ best batsman, Lucky Shantha, by coming around the wicket and tossing up a slightly wider half-volley.

This plan almost came to fruition immediately, but unfortunately a fairly simple

catch at point was put down.

Berry would have been forgiven for dropping his head, but to his credit, he stepped up and took a wicket with the next ball and another to close out the over.

The dropped catch proved to be very costly in the end, with Shantha making 104 before falling to Sam Bell.

Brent Chandler made

much from there.

Patrick Smith scored over half the team’s runs but unfortunately, that was only 14 runs. Dismissed inside 13 overs, Delatite limped to a total of 27.

A week is a long time in cricket, so they say, and our boys will have a shot at redemption next week against Beechworth.

By ROHAN BERRIMAN DELATITE U14 cricketers travelled to South Wangaratta to take on Rovers Bruck United Gold. Playing a two day game in split innings to allow the players to bowl and bat in the one day, Delatite won the toss and batted making 1/64 with openers Max O’Loughlan and Nick Hoskin seeing off the new ball.

Hoskin in particular played some great shots with 44 not out off their 20 overs.

Delatite’s time in the field saw some power batting from the opposition with opener Will Graham scoring freely making 50 not out, putting the Delatite bowlers and fielders under constant pressure and finishing their 20 overs on 2/124.

Delatite will have to up the run rate and play their shots and tighten up in the field to have any chance of victory when the game concludes next Saturday.

Stars snatch final ball win THE Under 12 cricketers returned for 2022 last Wednesday at the Recreation Reserve, playing out the closest game we have seen this season.

The Bushrangers batted first, losing six wickets with their normally reliable big-hitters kept quiet.

Lachie Roberts top scored with seven from his allotted 12 balls, while Nixen Martin took three

wickets and a handy catch.

The Bushrangers eventually reached a score of 40, helped out by a handy contribution from extras.

With one batter short, the Stars looked set to struggle to reach the target but came out swinging.

Cooper Martin and Felix O’Meara bookended the innings with nine apiece, while the other five all contributed.

After losing a wicket in the second ball of the last over, the Stars needed seven to win from the final four balls.

A four from O’Meara reduced the target to three runs in three balls, which was followed by two singles to draw level with one ball to spare.

Jack Jacob faced the last ball and with a quick single to mid-on, scampered through to win it for the Stars.

From back page Fellow opener Luke Whitten went on to post an attacking 42, Sanford also removing him and brother Matt Whitten.

With the score now at 3/105 at the 20 over mark, there was still hope of a miracle for Delatite, however, Jacob Schonafinger (21) and Jacob Beattie (61) combined to pile on an 85 run-partnership to beat the hosts into submission.

Rovers finished their 40 overs on 6/215.

Max Sampson returned to the crease to capture two late wickets, however, best bowling for the day was returned by Sanford, who collected 3/23 from his 8 overs and with it the BP Vantage Fuels player of the day award.

Back to the drawing board this week for the Delatite side, and with a couple of players returning next week for the clash against Beechworth, again at Lords, hopefully they can return to the winners list.

Delatite B Grade goes down in gallant effort

By DAVID FOSTER Wangaratta & District Cricket Association - B Grade Milawa 3/246 defeated Delatite 82 DESPITE a gallant effort Delatite’s B Grade side simply didn’t have the firepower to match it with Milawa.

Played at the Milawa Oval, Delatite captain Brett Brad-

ley won the toss and opted to field first.

Pretty much everything went right for the home team.

Openers Callum Honey and Jack Connor made every post a winner.

Honey in particular was unforgiving of any wayward deliveries as he crunched nine sixes.

While they achieved a century partnership with a

stand of 137, they each fell tantalisingly short of a century each.

Honey was out for 91 and Connor got even closer with 97.

Chris Oates followed up with 19 and Nathan de Vries remained on 18 not out.

It was a hard slog for Delatite’s bowlers but they stuck well to their task.

Mitch Clarke’s single over earned him 1/6, Paul Brond

picked up 1/42 and Prince Dhiman captured 1/44.

Delatite’s ground fielding was excellent and in the air Jonathan Le Brocque put paid to both openers’ three figure aspirations with confident catches.

Reeling in Milawa’s substantial 3/246 was always going to be a big ask and so it proved.

It has been a tough few weeks for the club with COVID cases and isolations plus general unavailability.

Despite the loss it was heartening to be able to put a side on the park so players could get a game under their belts.

It’s off to Benalla on Saturday for Delatite B as they face up to the Benalla Bushrangers.

By PETER SCALES THE Delatite first XI held onto a place in the top four on the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association A grade ladder despite a heavy loss against Rovers United Bruck Cricket Club (RUBCC) at Lords on Saturday.

Batting first upon winning the toss on a belter of a wicket prepared by Ken Cousins, the hosts lost their openers in quick succession.

The Rovers bowlers and fielders were relentless and restricted the flow of runs through the first half of the innings, to have Delatite bogged down on 3/29 from 20 overs.

Number three Mitch Copey was again the mainstay of the innings, and after the drinks break he and Alec Ritchie, in his A grade debut, set about lifting the run rate.

They added a valuable 35 runs together before both were out for 28 and 11 respectively, with the score on 59.

Lachy Scales (22no) and Jarrod Mahoney (17) lifted the tempo with some sharp running, and with help from the tail-enders Delatite managed to take the score to 8/129 from its allotted 40 overs; a modest tally but at least something to bowl at.

Delatite came out in attack mode, setting aggressive field positions in the hope of early wickets.

The Rovers’ opening batsmen spoilt the party, however, making the most of the gaps in the field, and scored at will with boundaries and running numerous threes.

After 10 overs they were more than halfway to the target.

Baily Dale was the chief aggressor, smashing 45 from just 41 deliveries.

The introduction of spin brought him undone with Joel Sanford and keeper Copey combining to have him out stumped.

Anthony strikes gold in women’s moguls NEW Olympic champion Jakara Anthony has taken women’s moguls into a new league after crushing the competition to end Australia’s 12-year Winter Olympics gold-medal drought.

The 23-year-old Mount Buller skier led the two-day competition through every round and then scored 83.09 points to comfortably win the six-woman super final to earn gold on Sunday.

After finishing fourth on her Olympic debut four years ago in PyeongChang, Anthony identified the air component as the weakness in the women’s competition.

Through Beijing, she was the

only skier - and the first woman in Olympic competition - to include a ‘cork 720 mute’ jump, with the higher degree of difficulty giving her an edge on her rivals.

She completed the jump around 2000 times in practice at the newly-built water ramp training facility in Brisbane before using it in her competition run.

“My top air jump is called a cork 720 mute,” she said, explaining that the cork is the off-axis rotation, 720 is two rotations and the mute is the way she grabbed her skis,” Anthony said.

“I started competing that just this season.

“That’s my highest degree of difficulty and it’s pretty special and I think I might be the first girl at the Olympics to have competed one so that’s pretty special.

“The women’s aerial packages have progressed so much since PyeongChang - it’s like night and day - and I will definitely be looking to continue to progress my own and keep pushing everyone else.”

Anthony said she wasn’t driven by having finished fourth in the 2018 Games because she felt she had skied to her potential then.

But she knew that four years later she was capable of much more.

“To have gone number one in every round is incredible,” Anthony said.

“I know that I’m capable of skiing like that and I was able to let myself do that and something I take a lot of pride in.

“When I crossed the line I was like, whatever happens now I’m totally content with because I was so happy with that run.

“It was truly my best run on the course and I was really proud of it.

“I thought I’d done enough (to win gold) and if anyone had beaten that run I would have been so stoked for them because it would have been a phenomenal run.”
