FINALLY: Indi independent MP Helen Haines welcomed the passing of the National AntiCorruption Commission Bill that was largely based on her model.

National AntiCorruption Commission is legislated THE National Anti-Corruption Commission has been legislated by the Federal Parliament, and will be established in the new year.

Indi independent federal MP Helen Haines marked the occasion in parliament last Wednesday as a significant victory for integrity and transparency in politics.

“This day has been a long time coming - it is a moment of national significance, and this legislation is a huge step in restoring trust and integrity to politics,” Dr Haines said “This victory is for the people of Indi who have voted for action on corruption.

“This is for every person who has stopped me on the street and said: ‘don’t give up on integrity, Helen’.”

Dr Haines paid tribute to the former Indi MP Cathy

McGowan, and other advocates who have worked hard over many years for an integrity watchdog.

She also congratulated Attorney General Mark Dreyfus and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for their work in making the National Anti-Corruption Commission a priority.

“I also congratulate all the members of the Attorney General’s Department who have worked on this legislation, which will serve the Australian people long into the future,” Dr Haines said.

“I’m very proud to be an independent member of this parliament and a member of the crossbench that has moved this issue from the sidelines to the mainstream and now to legislation.”

The bill was amended in

the senate to add further safeguards, strengthening the power of the Inspector which oversees the NACC. “The legislation is based largely on my model and I am proud to have played a significant role in its development through the government’s consultation process and as deputy chair of the committee which scrutinised the bills,” Dr Haines said.

“I am disappointed that my amendments, which would have removed the exceptional circumstances clause for public hearings, and further strengthened the independence and powers of the NACC, were not agreed to by the major parties.

“But overall, this is good legislation and I wish the future NACC every success.”

SEVENTY new residential lots are set to hit the market after council recently passed a motion to approve a proposed development at 100 Highton Lane.

During the most recent council meeting, local residents spoke of their concerns about the development of the land.

One of those residents, Carol Lowden, spoke of the loss of amenity, lack of green space, impact on wildlife, and the roadway’s inability to cope with the increased traffic and curb side demands.

“Our main concern is the development company has not acknowledged or responded to our concerns, and we don’t have confidence they will be responsible or negotiable,” said Ms Lowden.

“Once we lose the rural feel, it’s gone forever.

“We ask you to consider if the development plan is appropriate for Mansfield and current

Council noted that most of the initial objectors had been spoken with and their concerns put to rest, and Highton Lane would be prioritised for upgrades using the recently confirmed $9.8m federal funding under the Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program.

Councillors Steve Rabie and Mark Holcombe personally visited the site prior to the council meeting.

“I don’t think it’s an inappropriate development,” said Cr Holcombe.

“The area was zoned residential back in 2006 and as I understand it was originally intended to have 200 homes on it, now it’s at 70, at a time when we have a housing shortage; a shortage of

“General residential zoning allows for blocks as small as 300sqm, so it’s on the lower end in terms of density,” said Ms Crane.

“There’s provision for garden areas.”

Cr Paul Sladdin said the area was always going to be developed and that council will continue to undertake conversations with the relevant authorities, such as Regional Roads Victoria, about Highton Lane’s intersection with Mt Buller Road.

A regal win for Paddy and Queen at Brumby Challenge

By LYNN ELDER MERRIJIG’S Paddy Purcell and his bay Brumby mare VBA Queen proved to be a winning combination and a popular choice in the Australian Brumby Challenge finals held at 2022 Brumby Festival November 26 and 27 at Wesburn in the Upper Yarra Valley showcasing how wild Brumbies can change over 100-plus days from “wild to wonderful”.

Paddy was blown away as he did not think they would win and was humbled that the pair also took out The People’s Choice award.

It has been a journey of discovery and learning to trust one another since the arrival of Queen at Paddy’s home in July.

Paddy, as her trainer, has been concentrating on that relationship as part of the preparation for the challenge.

Approved trainers were selected through a ballot system and horses were relocated to their new homes across three states in-cluding Vic-

toria to begin the Brumby Challenge with month-ly updates required on their progress.

Points are awarded across the categories of conditioning, versatility, and freestyle (the first time as a non-ridden event).

Brumbies and their trainers were judged on catching, float loading and general handling as well as the physical condition of each horse.

According to Paddy, the most challenging aspect of Queen’s training was float loading, which required more patience and time.

The obstacles class was a choice of either ridden or lead.

Paddy and Queen accumulated a total of 842.5 points ahead of Asha Loughnan and VBA Dawn on 770, and Orin James and VBA Courage on 757.

Paddy was thrilled with the win and said while they did not come first in any of their classes, their performances were consistent and enough to take out the overall prize.

The pair was presented with

a trophy and $500 prize money which Paddy has donated back to the organisers of the festival.

There was plenty of local support for the duo at the Brumby Festival with a group of 12 including Merrijig’s Kellie Lovick making the journey.

“Many more quickly became a massive supporter of the pair,” said Kellie.

“Queenie is just a gorgeous brumby and anyone who comes in contact with her, just falls in love”.

But be warned “Queenie only has eyes for Paddy,” she added.

Queen found a new fan when Tom Burlinson, who played the lead role in the ‘Man from Snowy River’ film 40 years ago, was staying in Merrijig for the Mountain Cattleman’s Get Together in October, got to sit bareback on the Brumby mare.

The photos of the actor and Queen were posted on social media to everyone’s delight and served as a way to again highlight the plight of the Brumbies in our national parks.

Recently he introduced Queen to several girls from the Mansfield Girl Guides who were visiting the Mansfield Zoo while he was there using the undercover sand arena.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the guides to meet Queen and learn about her background from Paddy who loves to share the Brumby’s backstory.

Owning and training his own Brumby has highlighted to Paddy the urgency of stopping the cruel practice of shooting Brumbies as a way for governments to manage them.

“I want to somehow use the Brumby challenge as way of raising public awareness,’’ he said.

He said many people were not aware of what was happening or felt powerless to do anything.

Asked where to from here Paddy stressed, ‘’I want to focus on stopping cruelty to Brumbies and continue learning from Queen who has a lot to teach me.’’

For one rescued Brumby, her future is assured.

NURSE PRACTITIONER WEEK

NEXT week during Nurse Practitioner Week, (December 12-18) the ACNP are celebrating and educating Australian communities on what makes a Nurse Practitioner different and why this is essential to the future of healthcare in Australia.

Access to GP appointments locally is always a hot topic for discussion, with the continued population growth of the town, the issue requires innovate solutions to address.

Unfortunately, recruiting more GPs isn’t as easy as it may seem.

Both local GP clinics are on the recruitment drive almost constantly to try and maintain a workforce, but it is not easy.

Enter the Nurse Practitioner (NP), sometimes referred to as ‘the super nurse’.

NPs have completed additional university study at master’s degree level and are the most senior and independent clinical nurses in our health care system.

What is an NP?  NPs are a widely known and used in the UK and USA and have practised in Australia for more than 20 years.  NPs have professional autonomy and are responsible and accountable for the care they provide.  NPs consult with their nursing peers, medical specialists, general practitioners and allied health professionals, to provide quality, holistic care to their patients/clients.  Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication under the PBS and refer for most diagnostic tests  Nurse Practitioner is a legally protected title with the role supported by legislation at both state and national level.

The Nurse Practitioner title can only be used by a person who has been endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Mansfield is fortunate to have three local NPs (Karli Brkljacic, Trudi Copeland- Reid and Nicole

Ashmore) and one in training (Cassandra Fraser); this is particularly lucky as there are only about 200 NPs in all of Victoria.

Karli Brkljacic, Clinical Manager at Central General Practice Mansfield (CGP), has been advocating for the role since moving to town six years ago and having recognising the gap in access to care.

“A NP does not replace the role of the GP, but is a great solution for acute, short term and interim care in the absence of access to a GP,” Ms Brkljacic said.

Central General Practice (CGP) will be moving to have an NP available 3-4 days a week in 2023 to help with the overflow of appointments, particularly focusing on the urgent or ‘on the day’ needs such as acute illness and injury, repeat scripts and medical certificates.

This model allows the GP more time to focus on care of their regular patients with more complex health needs.

CGP owner Dr Ben Nally said, “We have had 1000 new patients

have their first consult at CGP in 2022; having the NPs on board allows us to manage this influx of new patients and continue to provide quality care.

“Our GPs as a group fully support the role and are always available if NPs need to escalate or discuss patient care,” Dr Nally said.

“Our practice continues to grow and our NPs are an important part of our workforce plan moving forward, we just need Medicare to get on board and support the role.”

Currently, the Medicare rebates for NP consults are significantly lower than the GP rebates, meaning to ensure the NP model is financially viable for the clinic, bulk billing of NP consults is not possible - so the patient is charged an out of pocket fee.

“We have seen already that most patients are comfortable paying an out of pocket fee as they value the service provided and the convenience of being able to access care in a timely manner,” Dr Nally said.

A DEFENDANT has received a $509 fine and had his licence suspended for three months following his appearance in Mansfield Magistrates Court last week.

Prosecutors outlined events from Saturday July 30, 2022, when local police were conducting speed checks in a stationary vehicle on Mt Buller Rd, Merrijig.

Police alleged that at 10:55AM they observed the accused travelling east in a Toyota Kluger at a fast rate of speed estimated at 125-130kmph.

The accused overtook another vehicle believed to be travelling at the speed limit.

Police intercepted the accused’s vehicle, identified him and observed a female passenger and children in the rear.

“I really didn’t look at it,” said the accused, referring to the speedometer when asked his reason for speeding.

Police issued a fine and a three month licence suspension.

The accused, who had travelled from Melbourne to attend court in person, sought leniency from the magistrate with hopes of keeping his licence.

“I’m okay with the penalty, but I can’t afford to lose my licence,” he said.

“I have to drive my kids to school; if I can’t, they’ll be staying at home.”

The presiding magistrate said he had no discretion in the matter due to the mandatory sentencing legislation.

“That may be, but I have no power under these laws to change it,” he said.

“I’m obliged to suspend your licence for three months.

“But I will suspend it from tomorrow to allow you to get back home.”

From page 1 “It is likely that some of the seasonal closures providing access to the top of Mt Stirling (Howqua Gap Track, Summit Track, Clear Hills Track south of Craig’s Hut and the Monument Track) may open.

“We (resort management) are working with DELWP on this,” Ms Perrin said.

“Access to Craig’s Hut and other destinations (Bindaree Falls etc.) remains available and the closure of the Circuit Rd between TBJ and Howqua Gap is temporary; we are hoping it will be open in time for the summer holidays and are working towards this goal,” Ms Perrin said.

Ms Perrin did point out though that RMB only have management rites over the resort area and not the whole of Mt Stirling State Park.

Prior to VicForests pulling out on Mt Stirling for the time being, debate as to whether any logging should be carried out at all was a hot and ongoing issue for some community groups.

Friends of the Earth (FoE) activists recently visited the mountain assisted by Friends of Mt Stirling and the Victorian National Parks Association.

All were opposed to logging so close to a resort and the possible damage caused to forest areas along with threats to native fauna and flora.

The group visited most of the VicForests planned 11 coupes and carried out night time surveying for threatened animal species in a number of them.

What they found was

STOPPED: Protestors visiting the proposed logging coupes on Mt Stirling are pleased that log trucks have stopped for the time being. a rich diversity of forests and ecosystems, from midelevation mixed species forests, areas dominated by alpine ash, and in the higher Number 3 area, proposed coupes that were a mix of older snow gums intermixed with alpine ash.

“It is with a sense of relief that we have received advice that the higher roads on Mount Stirling will remain closed for some time to come,” Friends of Mt Stirling Group’s Charles Street said last week.

“The Friends of Mount

Stirling strenuously object to use of the Circuit Road and feeder roads by logging trucks.

“We believe this is unacceptable from public safety, biodiversity and tourism points of view.

“The logging of coupes around Mount Stirling impacts on biodiversity, tranquility, roadways infrastructure, public safety, and tourism,” Mr Street said.

“The permanent withdrawal of VicForests from the Mount Stirling area will be welcomed by everyone

who loves the mountain.

“It is not clear how VicForests could justify logging above this waterfall,” he said.

Apart from logging along extensive sections of the Circuit Road, concerns had been expressed about the Bindaree coupe, which is upstream of the very popular Bindaree Falls.

“This area of forest is upstream from streams containing the Barred Galaxias (Galaxias Fuscus) which is a critically endangered,” Mr Street said.

On November 20 Justice Richards of the Supreme Court issued Orders regarding the protection of forests around Kinglake and East Gippsland.

Summarising the ruling the Kinglake Friends of the Forest (KFF) said: “Surveys must be carried out to detect any greater gliders and yellow-bellied gliders that may be present in forest scheduled for logging (excluding coupes that have been clear-felled since 1939 as it is presumed forest this young is hostile to these hol-

low dependent species).

“In coupes containing greater gliders, VicForests must exclude the greater gliders’ located home ranges from timber harvesting operations; exclude from timber harvesting riparian strips at least 100 metres wide located along all waterways in the coupe; and retain at least 60 percent of the basal area of eucalypts in the harvested area of the coupe.”

“In coupes containing yellow-bellied gliders VicForests must exclude from timber harvesting riparian strips at least 100 metres wide located along all waterways in the coupe; and retain at least 60 percent of the basal area of eucalypts in the harvested area of the coupe, including all identified feed trees and hollow-bearing trees within the coupe.

“One would expect the same standards to apply to the logging of the coupes around Mount Stirling, but we are far from confident that VicForests have done the surveys and harvest planning that would satisfy the standards just established by the Supreme Court,” KFF stated.

Friends of Earth group posted on their Facebook page: “For those who especially enjoy skiing, walking, camping or mountain bike riding in the high country it is important that the areas earmarked for logging are retained in their natural glory.”

Some of the proposed coupes would have directly impacted the Australian Alpine Epic Mountain Bike Trail, which is a huge drawcard, bringing thousands of people to Mt Buller and Stirling.

New MCAV president speaks out against logging halt SIXTH generation Mountain Cattleman Cass McCormack was elected as president of the Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria (MCAV) last week.

Cass has hit the floor running, already coming out in support of the native timber industry - who have been ordered to cease harvesting after a Supreme Court ruling.

“My first message as president is to urge people from regional Victoria to stand up in support of those who continue to be devastated by developments hampering the timber industry,” she said.

VicForests ordered the stand-down after Justice Melinda Richards ruled the pre-harvest surveys were inadequate.

Injunctions imposed on harvesting last December had already locked contractors out of many coupes, with hundreds of jobs on the line.

Mc McCormack believes that timber harvesting as conducted in Victoria is fully sustainable while supplying vital resources for the needs of Victorians.

“Sustainable public land

management has always been the cornerstone of MCAV policy, and this will not change - this includes timber harvesting,” she said.

Cass has chosen to dip her newly minted president’s boots into political waters early in her role, but is focused on making a positive change both within her organisation and farther afield.

“The management of the High Country has been heading in the wrong direction for years and the Mountain Cattlemen’s knowledge should be utilized to change direction before this opportunity is lost,” she said.

“Right now, the bush is green and lush, and most aren’t considering the bushfire danger this will create as the weather dries.

“As president, one of my goals is to continue to work on advocating that alpine grazing reduces blazing, and to offer alternative methods of public land management.”

Cass succeeds her father, Bruce McCormack, who did not stand for re-election after being in the role for three years.

“Like many organisations,

the MCAV needs to keep pace with the times,” Mr McCormack said.

“I have been incredibly grateful to be able to represent the High Country as MCAV president, but thought it was time to let the next generation step up.”

Cass has been part of the MCAV Board of Management for four years and most recently coordinated the group’s annual Get Together event.

She is part of the McCormack family of Merrijig, who have been running cattle into the King Valley for summer grazing for more than 150 years.

“As president, I have a long list of goals I want to achieve, some more likely than others,” Cass said.

“I intend to continue raising management issues, which includes the strategic use of Alpine grazing, at both a State and Federal level on behalf of the MCAV. “I will advocate for a louder voice in the education system at all ages, encouraging the government to put forward alternative methods of land management.”

Successful legislative council candidates in the state election will be declared on December 13 and based on above the line votes the top three candidates for election are Liberal veteran Wendy Lovell, Labor’s Jaclyn Symes, and The Nationals’ Gaelle Broad, voted in spots one to three respectively.

But it was Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell for One Nation and Georgie Purcell for AJP who appear to have knocked others out of contention, namely sitting members Tania Maxwell of Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party, and Wodonga-based Liberal Democrats’ Tim Quilty.

Ms Lovell, who celebrates 20 years today as the sitting member for Northern Victoria and North Eastern Province which preceded it, said Ms Maxwell was “shafted” by a deal which effectively diverted preferences to her competition.

She said the potential election of Ms Purcell for the AJP could be something very interesting moving forward.

“The platform off that “Th l f h party doesn’t exactly fit with Northern Victoria and this is where we see the jury wheel working and people like Tania Maxwell who was a good member of parliament has unfortunately missed out because the preferences didn’t go her way,” Ms Lovell said.

“The Hinch party participated in the jury wheel and they had their number three preference going to Georgie Purcell.

“They are vastly different parties in terms of philosophy and it was not a natural preference flow because you went from someone who was all about justice to a very hard left party (Animal Justice Party) that’s not necessarily really about animals as there are a lot of other agendas that they have.

“On the flip side, Tania wasn’t very high on their agenda and it’s disappointing to see a really good contributor really shafted because of the preference flow which was organised by someone different to their party, and that’s why the loophole needs to be closed.”

AJP candidate Ms Purcell, a passionate animal protection advocate living in Macedon Ranges, holds the number five spot.

For the years she F h past four f h has been working as chief of staff to Victoria’s first Animal Justice Party MP Andy Meddick.

One Nation’s Ms Tyrrell lives in Invergordon, located between Shepparton and Numurkah.

She ran as a candidate at the 2022 federal election for Nicholls but was unsuccessful.

The Nationals’ Ms Broad, a Bendigo resident, was the former chief of staff for Federal Senator Bridget McKenzie.

“We won’t know until they push the button on December 13 and things often switch but the first three elects won’t change,” Ms Lovell said.

“The results so far are going by the votes on the group voting ticket based on the votes above the line, and although this is largely accurate there are always one or two surprises.

“What we know is the candidates who have the full quota are in and I am definitely back.”

The number of votes was just 58.54 per cent from the total enrolment (542,768 people) for Northern Victoria, including 307,084 formal votes and 10,637 informal votes.

Maxwell concedes election defeat NORTH East based state MP Tania Maxwell is not expected to return to her seat on Victoria’s Legislative Council, after largely conceding defeat in an online video to supporters.

She posted a live video to Facebook last week, expressing her desire to continue her advocacy work in the aftermath of the state election, after being left on the outer of a hotly contested race for Northern Victoria’s five seats.

The formal announcement of the new Legislative Council is expected early next month.

The Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party (DHJP) MP expressed her disappointment in the party last week, following a controversial preference deal reached by DHJP leader Derryn Hinch which saw the party’s preference votes redirected to the Animal Justice Party (AJP).

Mr Hinch later slammed the AJP, who renegged on reciprocating their preferences to DHJP. AJP candidate Georgie Purcell was as of yes-

terday primed to claim Northern Victoria’s fifth and final seat.

“Just wanted to let you all know I didn’t get through, I didn’t make it for re-election,” Ms Maxwell told her supporters.

“As disappointing and as devastating as that was and is, I got up this morning, had breakfast and I’m out in the garden doing the things I love - that’s my panacea.

“While it is a sad day, I’ve chosen not to sit around and be glum, as I thought I might be.

“I don’t know what lies around the corner but I’m sure I’ll be on to different things - I still see a role with my advocacy because that is my passion.”

Ms Maxwell said she had a deep appreciation for the swell of community support in recent years.

“I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who has supported me over the past four years,” she said.

“I can never express how grateful I am to those who have stood beside

me, helped me, voted for me and have sent incredible messages that have just made this all just a little bit easier.

“It’s going to take me a while to realise that I’m not going (back) to parliament - but who know what’s around the corner and who knows what will happen.

“I’m just going to take each day as it comes and be out in my garden, working hard, trying to lose some of those 20-odd kilos I think I put on in parliament, and just doing what matters to me for a little while before taking on another journey to continue to help all of you in some way shape or form.”

Wodonga-based Liberal Democrats representative Tim Quilty also appears on-track to miss re-election.

Tree planting honors late Queen’s Jubilee

Mansfield Shire Mayor, Cr James Tehan, was asked to officially acknowledge Country on behalf of the shire.

He praised the A&P Society saying it was the backbone of the district and often bridged the gap between city and country.

He pledged that council would continue to support the Society.

Cr Tehan also acknowledged the Federal Government’s grant allowing the 70

trees to be planted.

Ms Elder read a message from Member for Indi, Helen Haines who was unable to attend due to an extended Parliamentary sitting.

Dr Haines wrote: “To members of the Mansfield Agricultural & Pastoral Society, a warm congratulations on receiving a grant from the Queen’s Jubilee Grant Program to plant trees in commemoration of each decade of the Queen’s reign.

“This ceremony is partic-

ularly fitting the recent passing of Her Majesty.

“There is no more appropriate way to remember Her Majesty’s legacy than to plant trees that will provide shade and respite to visitors and to provide shelter for our splendid and delicate wildlife.

Life member of the A&P Society, Val Kirley was invited to unveil the plaque based at one of the 70 trees already in the ground.

She outlined her memories of seeing the Queen pass through Benalla on one of her trips to Australia before unveiling the plaque.

Ms Swaney said in 1889, the first president of the society and its members planted some 500 trees.

By 1890 the annual shows commence and the first saw 3000 people through the gates.

The grounds were maintained by cattle grazing helping to keep grass down when the venue was not in use.

In 1923 complaints were received saying the cattle were damaging trees so the committee of the time decided to change to grazing sheep; this still happens to this day and sheep keep the grass low saving on maintenance.

Ms Swaney said the president back in 1889 said: “Visitors to the district are amazed at the beauty of the showgrounds and it is generally accepted that this could become the best showgrounds in Victoria.”

“I think today we would probably agree,” she said.

Ms Swaney acknowledged the hard work of her committee and thanked them all.

She also thanked the dignitaries for attending and the MAD Orchestra for their unending musical support.

The committee now has two years to complete the project which will see more trees being planted around the grounds.

REMEMBERING the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the Mansfield Agricultural & Pastoral Society (A&P) last week unveiled a plaque recognising 70 years’ leadership.

Although the commemoration has come after the Queen’s passing, Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee was celebrated with grants going out to organisations across Australia commemorating the occasion.

A&P Society secretary, Lynn Elder welcomed about 50 guests, including Mansfield Shire Mayor, Cr James Tehan, Shire CEO, Kirsten Alexander, Society Life Members, representatives from many local organisations to the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate this special anniversary.

Ms Elder noted the time between applying, receiving the grant and planting some 70 trees in the showgrounds, it was unfortunate that Her Majesty passed.

The A&P applied for and received a grant of $15,000 in funding for a project to plant trees in and around the showgrounds after it was recognised that some of the older elms, particularly lining Mt Battery Road, had been affected by the Elm Beetles and were not going to last that much longer.

Mirimbah Precinct Masterplan is an opportunity for input ALPINE Resorts Victoria (formerly the Resort Management Board) commenced a master planning process for the activation of the Mirimbah Precinct earlier this year.

This process aims to strengthen Mirimbah’s role as an orientation point and destination for discovering Victoria’s High Country, highlighting its important role in activating year-round visitation to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling.

A combination of public consultation and drawing on the local values and aspirations for the precinct have resulted in the vision to enhance the pristine natural environment with improved facilities, with the aim to support passive and active recreation within and leading from the precinct.

Urban Enterprise, with support from Tract landscape architects, were engaged to develop the concept masterplan.

Two options have been prepared for the snow and green season to demonstrate potential site uses across the year.

The plans focus on the potential future uses for the precinct, and their spatial allocation based on best fit with the site landscape, amenity, and current and future site roles.

The options are indicative only and may change, following consultation, detailed engineering and design work.

Firefighter recruits ready for emergency response in north east Victoria FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) 126 seasonal firefighters are ready to respond to bushfires and other emergencies across north east Victoria this summer.

Forty-nine of the firefighters are new recruits and have undergone training in recent weeks to prepare them to help protect communities and the environment from bushfires.

Seasonal firefighters complement FFMVic’s fulltime firefighting workforce and will be located at sites across the region.

This includes locally in Mansfield, along with Wangaratta, Broadford, Alexandra, Marysville, Toolangi, Kinglake, Benalla, Shepparton, Nathalia, Yarrawonga, Beechworth, Ovens, Whitfield, Mt Beauty, Bright, Mitta Valley, Tallangatta, Corryong.

Across the state, FFMVic has recruited 552 firefighters, including 28 specialist rappel firefighters.

Rappel firefighters deploy from helicopters for first attack on bushfires in remote and inaccessible forest across Victoria.

They will be located at airbases in Ovens and Heyfield.

Shire shines in animal cruelty stats

By SHAUN McMAHON MANSFIELD Shire has ranked 46 out of 79 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Victoria in animal cruelty statistics released by the RSPCA last week.

The result shows that the majority of animal owners in the shire are providing the required care for their animals.

While ranking 75th in overall reports, Mansfield Shire was better than most per capita, with a total of 18 reports in the financial year 21-22.

The shire had 17 reports in the previous financial year, placing second last per capita for 20-21.

The results are significantly more positive than neighbouring shires, with Strathbogie Council’s 60 reports earning them second place on the unfavourable per capita table, the Pyrenees Shire Council the only worse performer.

The Rural City of Wangaratta had 104 reports to take ninth place, while Benalla Rural City Council sat at twelfth with 49 reports.

A brand new online, interactive map launched by RSPCA Victoria lets the community track rates of animal cruelty in their own LGAs. Latest data from the 2021/22 financial year shows neglect continues to be the most common type of report received.

“We acknowledge that in addition to the rising cost of living, which may impact the ability of some to care for their pets, many Victorians adopted pets during the pandemic, some as firsttime pet owners who may still require information or support to help them understand how to best care for their animals.

“It is important all pet owners understand the specific needs of their pets in terms of food, water, shelter, grooming and exercise.

“If you are the owner or person in charge of an animal you have legal and moral obligations to that animal.

Repair works continue on unsealed gravel roads REPAIRS to unsealed gravel roads continue across the shire with council’s resheeting program.

Council awarded the $449,280 contract to Extons Pty Ltd. The program will repair priority sections of unsealed roads that have deteriorated due to weather and traffic.

Over the summer months, the works will take advantage of drier weather and are anticipated to take place between December 5, 2022 and February 16, 2023.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said significant investment has been made in this year’s budget for the road network across the shire.

“Our unsealed gravel roads provide critical links for agriculture, business, residents and visitors,” he said.

“This investment will address the deterioration we’ve experienced due to the increased rain and ensure the

SUMMER FUN?: Surprise snow at Mt Buller.

Summer started at Mt Buller

IT FINALLY felt like summer on the mountain this weekend with sunshine, mountain bikes spinning around the village and hundreds of happy faces as you’d expect - and in a surprising twist - a pop-up terrain park that looked like it had been transplanted from mid-winter onto Bourke Street.

The new summer kick off event, the “Summer Shred Sesh”, combined the best of both seasons and drew eager crowds from the biking and snow tribes to the village for

a Saturday gathering to mark the official start of summer.

Tyson Pollard and the Mt Buller Park crew built the pop-up terrain park using a huge stockpile of tonnes of snow salvaged from the close of the winter season, “It was fun to get in the cat and push the snow, get some features in place and be out on rakes and shovels shaping snow in December,” said Tyson “The buzz was huge so we wanted everyone making the trip for the Summer

Shred to have a great canvas to work on.

“I’m stoked at how well it turned out with two lines of features to session.

“It was amazing to see a long line of great snowboarders and skiers fired up to take laps and be able to say they shredded together up here in summer.”

The terrain park brought lots of riders from the local area and as far afield as Jindabyne.

Off the snow the bike community celebrated the

official start of riding season with All Terrain Cycles and Blue Dirt both open in the Mt Buller village for business offering rental, skill sessions and shuttles.

Shannon Rademaker from All Terrain Cycles was excited to see riders back in the village and sessioning the big airbag alongside pro-riders Luke Parker and Andrew Nibblet.

“It was such a good vibe having pro riders like Luke and Andrew inspiring everyone and we had our first tour

and skills session for the summer head out onto the trails,” said Rademaker.

“The new pump track is brilliant and it’s a good energy in the village having people and bikes rolling around again.”

The November snowfalls have delayed some of the trail openings including Delatite and Epic trails but plenty of the One Tree Hill and Corn Hill trails are open and riding well so far with the eagerly awaited and refurbished Delatite Trail

scheduled to open this weekend. The gravity trails and Epic are anticipated to open

by Christmas.

The good times on snow at Mt Buller haven’t just ended yet for 2022 with free snowplay sessions available every afternoon between Boxing Day and New Years Eve. Family friendly activities are offered for the kids during this holiday week and it’s the perfect way to cool off at the end of a summer day with some snow balls and fun.

Japanese encephalitis warning F Free vaccine i available il bl to those h working g in nearbyy shires AFTER months of flooding rains, key towns across Victoria are in the firing line for Japanese encephalitis (JEV), with experts warning of a mosquito boom as the weather warms up.

Health authorities have called for eligible residents to get vaccinated against JEV; a potentially fatal disease that can cause severe neurological illness with headaches, convulsions and reduced consciousness.

The Bureau of Meteorology recently announced that La Niña conditions will continue at least until early 2023, which means having more high intensity rainfall events, which can lead to flash flooding, providing a perfect breeding ground Culex mosquitoes, the species strongly suspected of being the main vector of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).

Dr Nirvana Luckraj, from Healthdirect Australia, suggests key preventative measures, such as putting on insect repellent, wearing long-sleeves, and removing stagnant water.

In February 2022, JE virus was detected in pigs in Victoria and several other states of Australia.

Locally acquired human cases of JE virus were subsequently confirmed.

JE virus had not previously been detected in Victoria, but there were 13 human cases of JE virus reported in Victoria earlier in 2022.

A mosquito surveillance and control program is in place in Victoria to monitor the number and species of mosquitoes, presence of viruses in mosquitoes (including Japanese encephalitis virus) and support local councils to manage the risk

JE virus was first isolated in Japan in 1935. However, the disease Japanese encephalitis had been described in Japan as early as 1871, and since then has been found in Russia, most of the Far East and SouthEast Asia.

JE virus was introduced into the Torres Strait islands in 1995, with 2 fatal cases of encephalitis, and onto the mainland of Australia (Cape York) in 1998.

Seropositive pigs were also detected on the mainland.

The most likely source of the outbreak in the Torres Strait islands was Papua New Guinea, where the first human cases were detected in 1997.

More recently, it has spread to the Indian subcontinent and Nepal.

It is the principal cause of epidemic viral encephalitis in the world, resulting in around 50,000 clinical cases annually.

JE virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, primarily the Culex species.

People cannot be infected by eating pig meat.

Pork meat or pork products are safe to consume.

Though Mansfield in not currently included, the JE vaccine is available free-ofcharge for people who live or work in Greater Shepparton, Indigo, Benalla, Wangaratta and Strathbogie.

The risk of exposure to

mosquitoes is low at an elevation of greater than 500 metres.

Therefore, JE vaccination is only recommended for individuals who spend significant time outdoors below this elevation.

Illness usually begins with sudden onset of fever, headache, vomiting.

Australia continues to warm, heavy rainfall becomes more intense THE State of the Climate Report 2022, released last Wednesday, November 23,

by CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology, has found changes to weather and climate extremes are happening at an increased pace across Australia.

The report, released every two years, shows an increase in extreme heat events, intense heavy rainfall, longer fire seasons and sea level rise.

During La Niña events in 2021-22, eastern Australia experienced one of its most significant flood

periods ever observed.

The report shows heavy rainfall events are becoming more intense and the number of short-duration heavy rainfall events is expected to increase in the future.

Mansfield’s rainfall, with floods in surrounding areas has already experienced a total of more than 883mm for the year.

With about five weeks left in the year and more rains predicted this will be well above the average rainfall for this region of about 800mm.

In more recent weeks

more than 180 millimetres of rain fell across a 48 hour period - and still continues to fall almost every day.

Predictions for the North East are that heavier than usual rainfalls will continue well into December.

The State of the Climate report draws on the latest climate monitoring, science and projection information details Australia’s changing climate now and into the future.

Director of CSIRO’s Climate Science Centre, Dr Jaci Brown, said concentrations of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, are at the

highest levels seen on Earth in at least two million years.

“The concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are continuing to rise, and this is causing Australia’s climate to warm,” Dr Brown said.

Dr Brown said the report documents the continuing acidification of the oceans around Australia, which have also warmed by more than one degree since 1900.

“The warming of our oceans is contributing to longer and more frequent marine heatwaves, and this trend is expected to contin-

ue into the future,” Dr Brown said.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Manager of Climate Environmental Prediction Services, Dr Karl Braganza, said the report projected increases in air temperatures, more heat extremes and fewer cold extremes in coming decades.

“Australia’s climate has warmed on average by 1.47 degrees since 1910,” Dr Braganza said.

He said the length of fire seasons has increased across the country in recent decades.

“We’re expecting to see longer fire seasons in the future for the south and east, and an increase in the number of dangerous fire weather days,” he said.

State of the Climate 2022 is the seventh report in a series published biennially by the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO, which together play an integral role in monitoring, measuring and reporting on weather and climate.

Play it safe for Murray cod season opening RECREATIONAL fishers are being encouraged to check waterway conditions before they leave home following the opening of Murray cod season last week.

Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO Travis Dowling said the Murray cod closed season during September, October, and November each year gives the

species a chance to breed in peace.

“This season’s opening day will be unusual with dozens of popular waterways flood affected and potentially unsafe, even for shorebased freshwater fishers,” he said.

“We urge everyone to plan ahead, do their homework on river conditions and if in doubt,

head to safer destinations such as Lake Eildon.

“We all love Murray cod and season opening is a social occasion on the calendar, but it’s not worth risking the safety of loves ones including family and friends.”

Mr Dowling said track and road closures could also mean favourite

spots for season opening are inaccessible or suitable for fourwheel drives only.

“There is a lot of information about the condition of tracks, boat ramps, lakes and rivers so now is the time to jump online, get informed about the prevailing conditions and short-list your options,” he said.

IT is unlikely that Australia will get any respite from extreme weather over summer following a sustained period of heavy rain and flooding, with experts predicting the nation’s bushfire risk will soon increase.

The Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) released its seasonal bushfire outlook for the 2022 summer. The higher risk is due to flourishing vegetation after recent rains, which

mean increased fuel loads.

While it predicted higher risks in other states, in some good news, wetter areas across Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT are expected to have below-normal fire risk at the start of summer, thanks to recent heavy rainfall or flooding and reduced vegetation following the 201920 bushfire season.

While soils will remain saturated as summer begins, Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner

Andrew Crisp said the risk of grass fires could increase later in summer as it dries out, especially given the significant growth already evident across the state.

Those fears are shared by the state’s Country Fire Authority Chief Officer Jason Heffernan, who stated that Victoria is one of the world’s most fire-prone areas.

“Even an average fire season can have devastating consequences,” Mr Heffernan said.

HEAVY MAINTENANCE: All machinery used during a harvest should be regularly checked in order to minimise the risk of paddock fire.

Farmer fire safety ahead of harvesting

REGISTER BEFORE YOU BURN: Despite a wetter than average spring, there will still be plenty of risk in burnoffs with increased plant growth.

Burn-offs permitted, but people urged to register officer Jason Heffernan, registering burns and applying for permits was vitally important for community safety, particularly as the number of local government areas (LGAs) in fire restrictions increases in the coming weeks.

“The Fire Permits Victoria website allows agencies to communicate with those planning burn-offs in a timely and efficient manner, allowing us to provide consistent and up-to-date advice on suspending or revoking a permit if conditions change,” he said.

The fire permits system allows authorities to crosscheck triple zero calls from individuals who may be reporting the smoke from a registered burn-off, preventing the unnecessary dis-

patch of firefighters.

Although milder conditions are expected this fire season, Fire Rescue Victoria acting commissioner Gavin Freeman said burnoffs could easily escape if not managed and monitored properly.

“Keep your burn-off safe by ensuring you have sufficient water on hand at all times and fully extinguish the burn once completed,” he said.

“We know burn-offs can flare-up several days afterwards, which highlights the importance of making sure the fire is fully extinguished and keeping an eye on weather conditions not just for the day of your burn but for the following days as well.”

Homeowners should always notify their neighbours if their activity will create fire and smoke, and should leave a three-metre fire break free from flammable materials around the burn.

The fire should be properly extinguished before being left alone.

“

Moving parts and bearings should be regularly inspected on all heavy machinery, while farmers should also ensure they have adequate firefighting resources available in paddocks where harvesting operations are conducted.

“It should be part of everyone’s routine to check for straw or grass build-up in machinery, to maintain its spark arrestors, and to take regular breaks when operating machinery to ensure it doesn’t get too hot,” Mr Heffernan said.

“Farm machinery should also carry fire suppression equipment such as a knapsack spray pump or water fire extinguisher.

“Farmers are often the first responders to grass fires and they understand the risks and seriousness of operating machinery in hot, dry conditions.

“Being fire safe on your farm should be part of any fire plan you have.”

RESIDENTS are being urged to register their burn-offs with state fire authorities, as rural properties increasingly begin preparations for the upcoming fire season.

Rain and consistent flooding events throughout the North East have largely curtailed the region’s fire risk, however, with warmer weather expected to descend on the region ahead of the holiday season, local firefighters have expressed concerns over a potential grassfire risk in early 2023.

Last fire season between October 25 and May 1, some 85,224 burn-offs were registered across the state, with 18,776 issued through the centralised Fire Permits Victoria website.

According to CFA chief

FIREFIGHTERS have urged local farmers to remain aware of their fire risk ahead of harvesting season, with dried out crops posing an inherent danger to those underprepared.

With rain and flooding largely curtailing farmers so far this year, sunny weather is expected to accelerate the drying of crops, which can often be ignited by machinery and vehicles and quickly incinerate entire paddocks.

“CFA volunteer firefighters respond to more than 200 harvesting-related fires a year on average,” CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said.

“Not only do these fires put pressure on our volunteers, many of whom are farmers themselves, but it also puts farmers’ profits and safety at risk.

“Awareness is the key to avoiding harvester fires this season will see farmers working in challenging conditions as they harvest their crops, but it is important that machinery and equipment are regularly maintained and cleaned, as well as inspected thoroughly before and during use.

“Hot and dry conditions are a particular concern for CFA - if it’s a high fire risk day, our advice is to

NORTH EAST REGIONAL NEWS Resorts receive late spring snow LIKE Mt Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek received 30cm of snow last week according to resort records - only a few days before summer.

Around 35cm fell in total due to the stormy conditions that swept the mountains last week and the previous weekend.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures reached a low of -4.5 degrees Celsius at Falls Creek last Monday, while Dinner Plain (a lower elevation than Mount Hotham) only reached 0.3 degrees.

Hotham Resort management issued an alert for motorists, warning of the potential for icy roads and strong winds the next day.

Mount Hotham received 68.8mm of rainfall on Sunday, November 20 and wind speeds reached 119km per hour the day before.

Airshow delay THE Benalla Airshow, originally scheduled for November but was cancelled due to flooding, will now be held on Saturday, March 18 in 2023.

The event will be the first of its kind for Benalla, with thousands expected to make their way to Benalla

Construction equipment stolen during burglary in Shepparton Shepparton investigators are appealing for public assistance after over $10,000 worth of equipment was stolen from a house being renovated earlier this month.

It is understood three male offenders entered a property on Maude Street in Shepparton on Saturday,

November 19 between 3am and 5am.

Police were told the men came in three times over the two-hour period, stealing power tools, painting equipment and a safe which belonged to tradies working on renovating the property.

It is believed they loaded the equipment into a vehicle and fled the scene.

Investigators have released images and CCTV of men they believe may be able to assist with their enquires.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

COVID rate sees major monthly rise in state, locally MORE than 3000 new COVID cases are being added to Victoria’s tally each day, almost three times the rate recorded this time last month.

The state’s seven-day average sat at 3557 last week, having risen from 1298 reported in October.

Hospital officials last week said they would monitor COVID rates throughout the rural city to see whether changes needed to be made to the hospital’s visitor entry policy.

No such changes have been made.

A maximum of two guests are currently permitted to attend the bedside of patients at NHW during visiting hours, and are required to wear a surgical mask or present a negative rapid antigen test on the day of their visit.

Missing man found

Nationals retain seat

A MELBOURNE man reported missing last Sunday afternoon at Mount Bogong was found by helicopter seven hours later.

According to Sergeant Brad Dickens of Bright police, the 65-year-old man was with a group of seven hiking up to Mount Bogong’s West Peak on when he decided to turn back.

He took a wrong turn and headed down Quartz Ridge Track and became lost.

The man was reported missing at 5pm, but at around 10pm he made contact with members of the hiking group while at Bogong Creek Saddle.

According to Sgt Dickens, he was found around 12am by helicopter, lying in a safety blanket, and was winched up to the helicopter.

The man was taken to Wangaratta and assessed by members of Ambulance Victoria, who found him to be in a healthy condition, and then reunited with his family.

Ms Cleeland celebrated the election victory with family, friends, supporters and volunteers at the Seymour Racecourse.

Great Alpine Road death CRIMINAL proceedings against a 21-year-old

Power secured at Jamieson’s Neighbourhood Safer Place A NEW solar installation is underway at the Jamieson Memorial Hall, Jamieson’s designated Neighbourhood Safer Place - Place of Last Resort (NSP).

The project aims to help secure independence for the community during emergencies and extreme weather events and will deliver a Community Energy Node, consisting of 6.6kw solar panels with battery and inverter.

Regardless of weather conditions and without solar gen-

eration, the battery will store two-three days of autonomous backup power ensuring uninterrupted access to satellite internet that can be activated and made available to the community in a time of need.

This community-driven project is a collaboration between Jamieson Community Group in partnership with Renewable Energy Mansfield (REM) and council.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said the Jamieson community should be congratulated for

taking the lead on this initiative.

“The community can now feel safe in the knowledge they have adequate power to safeguard the power needs for a NSP in their town during emergencies,” he said.

“The 2019-20 bushfires created power outages of up to three weeks in parts of North East Victoria.

“That experience emphasised the importance of having infrastructure in place in rural fire-prone areas to man-

age this community risk.

“This infrastructure upgrade ensures the Jamieson Hall has usable backup power at a central base to offer respite, connection and support for residents.”

Ann-Maree Vague, Manager of the Jamieson Memorial Hall, said this project will provide a safer place for all members of the community and surrounds in times of need.

“The Jamieson Memorial Hall is right in the heart of town and will be a vital hub

for people to feel supported and safe,” she said.

“It will provide greater independence and security for all people of the community.

“The Jamieson Community has had a long-held vision for the Jamieson Memorial Hall to become a self-reliant, independently powered energy node and now this vision can be achieved.

Getting ready for Christmas in Jamieson JAMIESON ON THE LINE

LAST Sunday Jamieson residents joined Mansfield Parish members, for the Parish Christmas Party at Saint Mary’s Hall.

Fr George Feliciouz and his staff co-ordinated a very special Christmas luncheon where about 80 revellers enjoyed a delightful afternoon.

Included amongst the guest were two Fijian chaps who are working in the area, it was a very happy reunion for the many attendees.

LAST Sunday Jamieson welcomed the new Anglican Minister the Rev Mellissa Clark to her inaugural service at Saint Peter’s church.

The service was attended by local and visiting patrons Rev. Mellissa, was accompanied by her Border Collie ‘Oscar’, who enjoyed the attention from the altar steps.

Following the service the church community enjoyed luncheon at the Jamieson Café.

THERE have been some amazing changes to St Peter’s church over the last few weeks.

The Gallery on Nash artisans have moved their full collection of art, ceramics, craft and the plant nursery to St Peter’s Church in Grey Street.

The new look has paintings hanging on exhibition framework and the craft works are displayed on shelves, with the nursery plants on display in the grounds.

Some of the church pews have been removed and here is a very attractive portable fabric screen separating the art collection and the formal church, creating the sense of an intimate chapel.

NEW REV: An inaugural service was held at Saint Peter’s Anglican Church Jamieson on Sunday by Rev Mellissa Clark and she was accompanied by her Border Collie Oscar.

There are six pews for the congregation for a service where a larger attendance will require more seating the portable gallery could be moved and a requirement for chairs attained.

The new Gallery on Grey Street will open on Saturday, December 10 and Sunday from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

The Gallery will be open every weekend and open

between Christmas and New Year. We wish them well.

THE Paperback Mountain (Jamieson Book Club) have completed their first year, with a final meeting for 2022.

They enjoyed a dinner at the Brewery and invited local author AJ (Sandy) Mackinnon to join them. The members had read Sandy’s book ‘The Unlikely Voyage of Jack de Crow’.

Artisans market showcases local wares for Christmas

CHRISTMAS WARES: The annual Produce Store Artisans Market returns bigger and better in 2022.

THE popular Produce Store Artisans Market is on Wednesday, December 7, from 4pm to 7pm offering a chance to stock up on locally made Christmas gifts while soaking up some festive vibes.

The store’s interior and outside area along the footpath, is transformed into a vibrant creative event featuring stalls of handmade works by 30 local artisans.

“This market is all about local artisans showcasing their goods just in time for Christmas, and this year we have more stalls than ever before,” said Produce Store owner, Gill Belle.

While the kitchen will not be operating, visitors to the market can buy a glass of bubbly to enjoy while perusing the eclectic range of

handmade products, said Gill.

It is a great chance to pick up some gifts or something fresh for the house.

“In any case this is a great way to meet local artisans and see what everyone has been making over the year,” she said.

The organisers invite everyone to come and check out the market and meet the makers and buy quality handmade work.

During the market, the MAD Orchestra will again be entertaining everyone with their famous carols.

“The atmosphere at this market located in and around the Produce Store is a great shopping experience and a good way to support local artisans and the MAD Orchestra”, said market organiser, Karen Pirie.

Livestock owners: beware blue-green algae

Some hay growers’ worst fears have become reality HIGH rainfall in September, October and November have delayed cutting, but growers and others in the hay and silage industry had reasonably assumed fine curing weather would return in November.

All crops of pasture hay cut before the middle of November have been hit with between three and five rain events and nearly all hay cut in North East Victoria since then have been exposed to more than 150mm plus of rain in November alone.

While the warmer, dryer weather has arrived for our region, is a race against the clock for local farmers to attempt to get machinery on the ground and begin harvesting hay, silage and fodder in the hope that supply is high and prices are kept low.

The thought of abandonment is not an option for farmers despite harvesting difficulties due to saturated and in some places, sodden soils according to local farms Bailey Hourigan, operations manager at Darrynvale Jerseys, said that the quality and quantity of hay is down this year because of recent floods.

“We haven’t harvested as much

- BAILEY HOURIGAN hay this year due to access with machinery, along with the base of the grass leaf being covered in mud,” Mr Hourigan said.

“The quality of hay and silage will affect sales and feed for our dairy farm which will further affect milk production.

“A lot of farmers have missed the window of harvest as the grass is too mature and has collapsed.

“We have managed to harvest some quality hay and silage, however, the figures are way down in comparison to an average season.

“Our farm, along with many others, is still experiencing wet spots and wet paddocks, which

means only a percentage can be harvested while the remainder is left to cure and rot.”

He said hay growers have never seen a year like it as the area sown to hay crops have already fallen two years running thanks to La Nina.

Mr Hourigan said frtiliser and lime super phosphate are spread from February until May with Nitrogen dosed in the winter usually before rain, however, the further harvesting runs behind the more difficult land can be prepared for the next season.

“Buyers also fear supplies of summer crops will be greatly re-

stricted as well which will have an impact on the local dairy industry and cattle farms,” he said.

Dairy farmers will be looking for high quality hay to supplement their poor-quality pasture hay and silage.

“Farmers are many weeks behind and harvesting could blow out as far as December to January next year which will post further problems such as preparing soils for next autumn which again would put the schedule further behind.”

“Harvesting is not an option for many as it could take weeks for things to dry out,” Mr Hourigan said.

“The main issue right now is local contractors are struggling to find work as many properties cannot have machinery due to the risk of being bogged or damaged grass.

“We like to see around 30-40 per cent of moisture in bails but the numbers are much higher in some cases with further reduces the quality.”

He said the weather outlook continues to remain mainly dry as farmers are working long hours into the night to try and revive their season somewhat.

THE recent flooding event combined with warmer weather conditions has produced favourable conditions for blue-green algae to thrive in farm water supplies and standing flood water.

Senior Veterinary Officer Dianne Phillips said livestock owners need to remain alert - ingestion of blue-green algae can result in the poisoning of livestock.

“As there is no specific treatment for blue-green algae poisoning, producers should check standing bodies of water and farm water supplies daily for blooms, as this remains the most effective way of preventing stock deaths.

“Blue-green algal blooms typically appear as surface scum that looks like a suspension of green paint, often with an earthy smell.

However, the colour may range from pale green to dark brown,” Dr Phillips said.

Deaths can occur when stock drink toxins produced by the bluegreen algae, often when it is concentrated on the down-wind side of a water supply and has formed a dense, surface scum.

Animals that have consumed blue-green algal toxin may appear ill very rapidly, develop a staggering gait, collapse, begin to convulse and die - typically within 24 hours - depending on the toxicity of the bloom and the concentration of the toxin.

Those that don’t die immediately, often suffer from severe liver damage. This may lead to the development of jaundice (the yellows) or photosensitisation over the next few days. Livestock that recover from these ailments often suffer from chronic ill-thrift.

If a suspicious bloom is noticed, the water supply should be isolated as quickly as possible, and a safe alternate water supply provided.

“Where possible producers should identify an alternative water supply, prior to their primary source of livestock drinking water being affected by a bloom. There may not be time to identify an alternative water source once the primary water supply is affected,” Dr Phillips said.

“We recommend laboratory testing of the water supply for the presence of blue-green algae and a post-mortem or examination of dead or sick animals by a veterinarian.”

Contaminated water should not be used to irrigate vegetables and fruit or come in contact with plants being grown for food, particularly fruit and vegetables that are mostly eaten raw such as apples, grapes, tomatoes, strawberries, cabbages and other salad greens.

Dr Phillips said dogs are also prone to poisoning as they can swim in farm water supplies and should be kept away from suspect water sources.

By BRENDAN GRANT TOY Pistols were too strong for an undermanned Stray Cats.

It seems that having three number one players on a rotating roster was still not enough, as they struggled to find a fill in.

David Aldous came to the rescue and took the number four spot which meant the rest of the team had to step up a spot to cover missing number one.

This proved to be a great outcome for the Toy Pistols winning all the sets.

Toy Pistols 7-6-36 defeated Stray Cats 0-0-18.

Crackerjack was also missing their number one with Max Ree-Goodings staying home to look after new arrival Oskar.

Henry Walesch, Karyn Fraser, Michelle Pigdon and Dustin Ersvaer- Gotje didn’t let Oskar and Max down winning four sets.

The match point was to go to Juggernaut who won two sets but happened to win more games.

The match point is awarded to the team that wins the most games, this rule has been the subject of much discussion in the past, and I’m sure Justin Odd will keep campaigning to have it changed, even after this time being the beneficiary of it.

By RHONDA CARPENTER AT last, it was a wonderfully warm night for Thursday’s competition under stunning purple skies.

A sleepless night spent watching the Socceroos one nil World Cup win over Denmark to qualify was no excuse for poor performance; everyone was working hard.

Cal Bono re-joined his Calamari teammates, rejoiced with his new racquet, and found his mojo in the match against Matrix last Thursday night.

Rhonda Carpenter and Bono were asked the ques-

tion by Matrix’s Fiona Lindsay and Ben Nally in a tight opening set.

Calamari claimed the set 6-4 while Matrix’ Matt Johnson and Sarah Mae easily accounted for Matt and Ben Elliott 6-2.

Bono then combined superbly with the younger Elliott, Ben, now emerging onto the big stage, to defeat their counterparts 6-0 in a brutal encounter.

Remaining sets see-sawed as Ben Nally nailed his serve and combined strongly with teammates Mae and Johnson to win both 6-3.

Combatants were clueless on the outcome so when the card was completed a surprise was in store.

The sets were split, three each, with one game the difference.

Bono had won all his sets and Calamari sealed the win 3/26 to 3/25.

Crocodiles and Helz Bells enjoyed an equally close encounter, playing two tiebreakers, lengthy service games and classy cross court rallies.

Erich Schneider and Cathy Johnstone defeated Jenny Bell and Rachel Parsons 6-2 to open the contest while Steve Earp and Bob Carpenter overcome Andrew and

Carpenter was enjoying his fill in role for Helz Bells, determined to give his all, and with partners Earp, Bell and Parsons won all his sets.

Bell ultimately countered her crafty opponent Schneider in the final sets by winning both in tiebreakers.

Scores would need revision and consultation because Crocodiles had won 29 games to Helz Bells 28.

Helz Bells however had won four sets to Crocodiles two, giving them the four match points to Crocodiles three.

The win was memorable and worth celebrating especially for one pivotal player on her milestone birthday.

Barnes wins Medal of Medals

ANOTHER monthly medal ‘bites the dust’ as we continue to catch up on events and another ‘Medal of Medals’ champion is announced.

A little correction to the article last week which had Brad Grant winning the medal when Tom Dunstan was the winner, hence his photo today and our belated congratulations.

Tuesday - Par; one division with 29 players.

1st - Adrian Smith - plus 3 (h/c 25) 2nd - Geoff Morris C/B +2 (h/c 17) 3rd - Tom Nicol +2 (h/c 20) A very good round by Adrian who as I mentioned in an earlier edition is a cherished Life Member, former President and Captain.

He is rapidly becoming a ‘Tuesday specialist’.

Possibly because he warms up on Monday evenings with the ‘skins’ group, surviving there with the banter that occurs is a great challenge in concentration.

This skill apparently flows over to Tuesday where etiquette is far more apparent.

Well done Geoff your name appears often.

Plus two is a good score in a difficult format of golf where lesser lights like myself struggle.

Tom Nicol has really been on fire of late with regularly two mentions per week.

His ability to lose so often on countbacks is an annoyance that will be overcome as he gets a lot more matches under his belt, he has only been playing regularly for about the last year.

Thursday - Stableford; 55 players across two divisions.

A Grade 1st - Maurie Walsh 38 pts (h/c 10) 2nd - Steve McMahon 37 pts (h/c 8) 3rd - Kyle Bridgeman 36 pts (h/c 1) The proverbial Mr Consistent is our Maurie, as he is known.

An excellent score which will see the start of his summer handicap slide back to the midsingle digit player that he is.

MEDAL OF MEDALS: Peter Barns wins the Medal of Medals after a display of fine form at the weekend.

Steve McMahon we will mention later in this article as he took out second on this date, the first of the Christmas month.

Kyle is always around the mark rarely varying by one or two shots, his scratch score this comp is very commendable.

He is also the focus of success later in this article.

B Grade 1st - Warren Shephard C/B 37 pts (h/c 36) 2nd - Len Foster C/B 37 pts (h/c 27) 3rd - Dave Wilson 37 pts (h/c 27) All three were winners with the same score with only the run home to separate them; Warren had the ‘play of the day’ with a strong back nine.

Len Foster like Warren is a part of the Tom Swan morning group.

More will be heard about Tom in the immediate future.

I’m sure that Warren and Len will let their morning group know how much they owe them.

Dave Wilson in third is also an institution within our club having been President and Captain.

He was also the developer of our former excellent club facilities the start of our ‘steps to the future’.

Thursday Steve said when asked how he is going as he is starting to get some games under his belt.

His answer “not bad, progressing steadily.”

Two days later he wins the ‘monthly medal’ with a twoshot gap after having been second on Thursday.

Steve is a low handicapper who rarely varies by one or two shots.

He has the added advantage of his friend and playing partner Beau Purcell imparting wisdom, I’m not sure about the golfing side of that seer like wisdom.

In clear second was Alan Eustace, again a very steady consistent player similar to our other Alan who is currently having a spell as he fights off that nasty little germ that appears to be making a comeback.

Alan Eustace will be even better when he moves up the road with partner Lou and nearby neighbour Paul Lange, less time on the mower and more time to practice.

Lachie Christopher had an early trundle with Mark Jones and Jack Hutchins, an excellent back nine saw him edge out Kyle Bridgeman.

Jack a local lad and star footballer who leads and holds the backline together for the Eagles.

He is also the sister of Emily an excellent netballer.

Emily just happens to be the beloved of Lachie - small world.

All three are ensconced in Melbourne but are back regularly.

C/B (h/c 18) 3rd - Aaron Knight 72 (h/c 17) Peter Barnes is our ‘Medal of Medals’ winner after his fine round taking out B grade as well.

The award is a one-day shootout for all of the medal winners over the past year.

A very much coveted award which was run in conjunction with the monthly medal this week.

Runner up was Rod Sargent who excelled on the par three’s taking home three (a bit of a tongue twister).

Nick Siperki was just edged out into second, he in turn just held out Aaron Knight.

All three podium personnel had the same score, Aaron also featured last week.

Interestingly, there were twelve notable prize-winners - eleven of them had scores ranging from 70 to 73.

I’m sure all had stories of easy misses and misfortunes that could have changed the day.

That’s golf.

Earlier in the article I mentioned that Tom Swan is the captain of morning group.

He is now the captain of the afternoon group as well.

A little cryptic script you may well say - yes.

Tom has been appointed by the board to replace me at the end of January.

An outstanding replacement with many years of quality organisational experience.

A sound person in a strange world.

The next month we will jointly be keeping the ship steady as he and new board member Alan Parrott are inducted into our programme.

Our summer pennant team commence their season this week.

They had a resounding 5:0 win for the ten players who play in teams of two.

They certainly were not tired afterwards.

The opposition unfortunately forfeited due lack of players.

They are going to have a mini comp amongst themselves as a tune up.

Catherine Skinner off to ISSF President’s Cup, Egypt THE ISSF President’s Cup 2022 is currently taking place in Cairo, Egypt with competition being held from November 28 to December 4 Mansfield’s Catherine Skinner and invited to compete along with shooting partner Laetisha Scanlon.

The top 12 ranked athletes in each Olympic event according to the 2022 World Ranking were invited to take part in the competition, with Skinner (World Number 4), and Scanlan (World Number 7) both included in the President’s Cup, Women’s Trap Event.

Winners of the President’s Cup will receive the Golden Target, the Best Athlete of the Year award.

Skinner last week said, “To be invited to the Presidents Cup is always a reward in itself.

“There has always been a level of prestige attached to World Cup final, as it is an acknowledgement to a strong performance across the entire calendar.

“I look forward to this event to close out the season of 2022.”

Speaking on Australia’s in-

volvement in the President’s Cup, Shooting Australia CEO Adam Sachs said, “Shooting Australia is delighted that two of our leading athletes’ performances have been recognised through their invitation to the Presidents Cup. “We know they will represent Australia with pride as Catherine and Laetisha are provided this terrific opportunity to close out a successful 2022, before their attention returns to continuing on the road to Paris 2024.”

Scores climb as the sun shines on ladies golf

By LINDA TERRY ANOTHER beautiful week of golf and there was no excuse to not see improvement in all our scores, as the fairways allowed so much more run.

Twelve enthusiastic ladies lined up for nine holes on Tuesday - some with the intent of honing the skills now that extra run was up for grabs.

Playing off a handicap of 40, Kerri Nicol certainly found the conditions to her liking and with 20 points and the B Grade win, that handicap will soon be decreasing.

Linda Brook took the money for A Grade, also with 20 points as well as picking up the nearest the pin on the 3rd as a bonus. Also in the prize money was Jennie Rennie, 18 points, Jenny Koraus 17 and Pam Abbott 16.

On Wednesday, numbers were actually down a bit with only 24 playing - no doubt due to the silly season nearing and clashes in the diaries starting to pop up.

It did mean there were a couple of walk-overs for the Mansfield Golf League, more on that shortly.

Firstly for the daily 18 hole comp, there certainly were some great scores starting to appear.

This writer in particular was

MINOR GLITCH: Linda Terry finds herself in the sand - a minor glitch in an otherwise great round.

Kinloch paired well to score a 2/1 win, and the same result for Lorraine Cullen and Kylie Egan.

Meanwhile Linda Terry and Marion Mitchell had a battle royale on their hands in the 3rd match, with the lead changing a number of times before the final outcome of a draw, giving Mansfield the 2½ : ½ win.

Next week is the last of the round robins with Mansfield playing at home against Bright.

The temperatures kept climbing all week and it was a real touch of summer for Saturday’s golf, so maybe the heat scared a few off with just 8 playing.

Lyn Poulson had a cracker of a day however, winning with 39 points, while Pauline Ahola took second and Millie Cumming 3rd, each with 37 points.

Pauline also picked up the nearest the pin.

Everyone is reminded that Wednesday 14th December is our Xmas Fun Day, which will be a three-person “Gentsomes”, 8:30 for 9am shotgun.

Golf will be followed by Xmas lunch and all the usual fun of dressing up, kris kringles etc will apply.

This is always a fun day where we really encourage all our ladies, regardless of skill or handicap (or even no handicap), to just come along for a laugh, good company and a great social get-together.

So, the team League results for Wednesday were: The Nug Nugs defeated the Spring Chicks 71 to 62; The Out of Towners had a walkover to the Tee Party, rendering the winning scores of Linda Terry and Louise Calvert-Jones a bit of a waste in some minds.

The Happy Hookers comfortably dealt with the Ball Busters 72 to 56; The KLS Sloggers beat the Underdogs 69 to 60 and the Wedgies also had a walkover to the Long Putters.

The moral of this story ladies, is you need to be in it, to win it - best two scores count, so it’s all about showing up.

Summer Pennant this week on Friday was against Jubilee at their course, but we were delighted to wrestle the home ground advantage away from them, to come away with the win (our first for the season).

Gold for Jakara in World Cup opener

AUSTRALIA‘S best skiers have made a fantastic start to the mogul skiing World Cup season, with a double podium and four athletes reaching finals at the opening event in Ruka, Finland.

2022 Olympic Gold Medallist Jakara Anthony was spectacular, earning the highest turn and air points in the women‘s super final to claim the fifth World Cup victory of her career for the 24–year–old Mt Buller product, with a huge score of 81.69, more than three points ahead of second place.

Behind Anthony on the podium was Perrine Laffont of France and Anri Kawamura of Japan finishing with identical 78.33 scores, with the tie break for second favouring Laffont.

“It‘s my first win in Ruka ever,” Anthony said after stepping off the Ruka Podium.

“To kick off the season with the win and the yellow bib is pretty massive.

“You come into the first event and you don‘t know what everyone‘s been doing since last season, so it‘s exciting to come out and see what everyone can do and show off what you‘re capable of.

“It‘s a bit of a different experience for me this year, coming off such incredible experiences last season with the gold medal and the crystal globes,” Anthony continued.

“I‘ve definitely got a bit of a target on my back now and I think there‘s going to be a lot of learning experiences this season, but I‘m really looking forward to it.”

The mogul skiing athletes will now head to the Swedish resort of Idre Fjäll for a double event next weekend on December 10–11.

On a difficult carpet surface, Mansfield took a great win 76 shots to 52.

John Foots, Marian Ryan, Chris Laws and Enid Smith had a slow start and were down 3 shots to 11 after the 9th end but they found their line and took control of the game taking a great win 25 shots to 17.

Lyn Foots, Ray Close, Vicki Klein and Jenny Walsh shot out of the blocks to lead 19 shots to 7 after the 12th end and after a fight back from Wareena, Mansfield finally took the win 25 shots to 19.

The final rink of George Peterson, Elaine Peterson, Irene Fuller and Lyn Holland had a brilliant start to lead 10 shots to nil after the 5th end but Wareena began to challenge and after the 14th end they were down by just 5 10 shots to 15. Mansfield held their nerve and finished the stronger taking a great win 26 shots to 16.

The ladder sees Mansfield maintaining top spot and will play Moyhu at home on Tuesday.

Saturday Pennant saw the A4 side playing a Friday night game against Benalla and with a great crowd of support, Mansfield could not quite get the win, going down 70 shots to 91.

Graham Smith, Mick Walsh, Jenny Walsh and Enid Smith enjoyed the evening warmth and after

a slow start they ran away with an impressive win 29 shots to 12.

Winston Taylor, Gary Fuller, Doug Morley and Tom Tomic had a great start and led 8 shots to 2 after the 8th end.

Benalla began to find their feet and had the lead after the 15th end 17 shots 10 and with Mansfield finishing strong, Benalla managed to hold on to record a win 21 shots to 18.

Rick Nichols, Nick Klein, Don Cameron and Mick Hoban had a really close tussle all night with score on 7 all after the 7th end.

Mansfield had the lead by the 12th end 11 shots to 9 but Benalla won the next 4 ends to take the lead 17 shots to 11. Mansfield battled hard to get within 1 shot by the 19th end but the visitors managed to win the last 2 ends to take the win 20 shots to 16.

The final rink of Vicki Klein, Ian Morley, Ross Parsons and Dom Diaz had a hard night at the office with Benalla having total control all night winning 38 shots to 7.

Mansfield stays in 3rd spot on the ladder after their loss and looks forward to a win this week at home against Wodonga.

The A2s played on Saturday journeying to play top of the ladder Wodonga and were outplayed going down 98 shots to 48.

Ray Robinson, Peter Roberts, Nikko and Ray Close began well and had the lead after the 6th end 10 shots to 3. Wodonga began to show their form and only allowed Mansfield to win 4 ends of

the last 15 ends to take the 23 shots to 18.

George Peterson, Chris Laws, Lyn Holland and Marian Ryan had a tough day at the office with Wodonga just too consistent, going down 27 shots to 7.

Lyn Foots, Irene Fuller, Mark Bettany and Shane O’Brien were out classed all day going down 24 shots to 8.

The final rink of John Foots, Mike Harrison, Brian Revell and Steve Lewis battled hard all day but Wodonga was just too good winning 24 shots to 15.

Mansfield remains in 7th spot on the ladder and travel to Chiltern on Saturday with an earlier start of 11.45am.

Sunday saw the beginning of the Men’s Championship Pairs with the morning winners being Winston Taylor and Tom Tomic over Chris Laws and Kevin Nikkelson 15/11 and Rick Nichols and Nick Klein over Sid Revell and Trevor Thompson 16/11.

The afternoon games saw Rick and Nick defeat Winston and Tom 19/14, Mike Harrison and Steve Lewis had a win over Alan Dobson and Alan Hatcher 15/13, Graham Smith and Don Cameron defeated Ray Close and Peter McNeil by 1 shot 13/12 and John Foots and Noel Jackson had a win against Ray Robbo and Mick Walsh 21/15.

Next Sunday Rick and Nick will play Mike and Steve and Graham and Don will play John and Noel with the final to be played in the afternoon.

Tough day at the office for Delatite A

DUE to a series of circumstances and a general lack of dedication among too-numerous players, Delatite Cricket Club’s First XI became the First Eight as it took on Ovens Valley United Cricket Club (OVUCC) at Whorouly on Saturday.

Fortunately, Skipper Mark O’Loughlan’s son Max came along for the ride and raised the number in the field to nine, Ovens having won the toss and batted first.

Those present could eas-

ily have thrown in the towel but didn’t, deciding to make the best of a bad situation.

Instead, they threw themselves around in the field, in support of the bowlers who did a fantastic job.

Young Max didn’t let a ball get past him all day, and Patrick Smith covered more territory than Hume and Hovell.

Ovens’ Skipper Dylan Bursill played a terrific Captain’s knock, taking advantage of the extra gaps in the field to register a hard-hitting 73, and with able support from his middle-order,

OVUCC scored 6/211 from their 40 overs.

Pick of the bowlers was Lachy Scales with 3/29 from his 8 overs.

Mitch Purcell, Prince Dhiman, Peter Scales and Mick Burrows also toiled hard with the ball.

In reply the ‘Titers were never really in the hunt, losing wickets at regular intervals.

They weren’t humbled however, keeping Ovens in the field until the 37th over, reaching 120 runs.

Smith top-scored with a cavalier 27, including a few crisp boundaries.

His rear-guard innings coupled with his heroic efforts in the field sees him take out this round’s BP Vantage Fuels Player of the day award.

A huge shout out to OVUCC who displayed great hospitality by shouting post-game drinks for the Delatite players, so impressed were they with the visitors’ pluck.

Lords has finally dried out enough for Delatite to play host for the first time this season as cricket returns to Mansfield next Saturday against the Beechworth Wanderers.

Merton chase down Bushrangers

By ROHAN BERRIMAN MERTON cricketers hosted the Benalla Bushrangers in perfect conditions at the MCG on Saturday.

Benalla won the toss and batting first made 99 all out, with none of the visiting batsmen making an impact on the score board, restricted by the Merton pace attack lead by Jai Mackinnon with 4/14, Luke Berriman one wicket, and the Mark Noye/Henry Berriman combination both taking two wickets.

Merton again fired with the bat, with skipper Luke Berriman again smashing the opposition with 87 well supported by Daryl King with 50 n.o, Mackinnon 19 and Aaron Place with 18 in quick time after five years out of the game, showing he hasn’t lost any pace between the wickets.

Merton passed the 100 run target one wicket down and continued to bat out the 36 overs being 4/220 at stumps.

Merton and Delatite players Henry Berriman, James Benton and Orlando Miller represented the Wangaratta cricket league in the u14s v cricket Shepparton on Sunday played at Katandra.

Wangaratta won the match in a thrilling finish by 10 runs.

Merton’s James Benton top scored with 48 n.o, Orlando Miller took 1/9 and a catch also contributed to the win, and Henry Berriman also bowled well.

Great effort boys.

Merton travel to Greta next Saturday hoping for another victory before the Christmas break.

Delatite U14s travel to Benalla

SOLID: U14 girls basketballers recently traveled to Shepparton and played six solid games of basketball coming home runners up in their division. The girls all played with determination and smiles and as a team all weekend and responded to directions when needed. The club thanks to the scorers and parents for getting the girls there and helping them have a very successful tournament.

Delatite B Grade lose one sided contest

By DAVID FOSTER Wangaratta & District Cricket Association - B Grade Delatite 48 defeated by Yarrawonga-Mulwala 4/205 DELATITE’S B Grade team came out on the wrong side of a one sided contest against Yarrawonga-Mulwala.

Batting first at Benalla’s Arundel Street Reserve Delatite never

developed any momentum and was dismissed for 48.

Top scorer was debutant player Ikram Ul-Haq whose 9 included a couple of lusty boundaries.

Yarra’s Will Murphy boasted the figures of 2/2.

Xavier Mitchell took 3/18, Oliver Connell 1/15 and Lucas Eales 1/7.

The Yarrawonga-Mulwala opening batsmen put on a wonderful partnership of 157.

Geoff Montgomery scored 81 and Olly Cope was just two runs back on 79.

TJ Docking ended on 19 not out.

At the end of its 36 overs Yarra had cruised to 4/205.

Single wickets for Delatite went to Dave Holliday 1/14, Mitch Clarke 1/18, Charlie Watts 1/21 and Orlando Miller 1/26.

This Saturday sees Delatite B host Wangaratta Magpies at

Mansfield’s Recreation Reserve, now that the drop-in pitch has been installed there.

It will be with much relief and some excitement that cricket is finally back in Mansfield after the wet and soggy conditions of the past couple of months.

In fact each of Delatite’s senior and junior teams will compete in Mansfield which is something to celebrate in itself.

Delatite 8/87 lost to Benalla 8/124 DELATITE U14s travelled to Benalla for the last away game before a run of home games to come, and skipper Nick Hoskin wasted no time deciding to bowl first.

The Benalla batsmen made a good start, with both openers retiring.

Delatite fought back with two wickets to Orlando Miller and one each to Max O’Loughlan, Josh Cook, Finnigan Stokes, and Felix O’Meara.

Delatite were confident that the score of 124 was not out of reach.

Max O’Loughlan and Nick Hoskin opened the batting and started well, both retiring after their allocated balls.

Unfortunately, after the openers departed, the Delatite innings struggled, with regular wickets falling, including several run outs.

Felix O’Meara provided some late runs (13) with Max O’Loughlan who came back in at the end to top score with a very nice 36 no.

We are all looking forward to our first home game of the season next week, all are welcome to come down to the Mansfield Recreation Reserve on Saturday morning to cheer on our boys.

Targa gets the green light COUNCIL has unanimously voted to issue a conditional permit to TARGA for their High Country event slated to take place February 10-12 next year.

The permit is subject to TARGA obtaining approval from Regional Roads Victoria and Motorsport Australia at the conclusion of a review currently being undertaken.

Following a death during the TARGA Tasmania event in 2022, Motorsport Australia suspended the issuing of all permits until a review of TARGA-style events was completed.

Country event scheduled for November this year didn’t go ahead.

The big change to TARGA High Country 2023 is that the event will not have a street stage.

This decision was made following a letter from Mansfield Police which stated that while the previous event was well-coordinated and professionally run, they had safety concerns about the

street stage, in which cars raced directly through the main streets of Mansfield.

The decision to omit the street stage aims to mitigate the risks associated with vehicles travelling at speed on Mansfield’s streets and requires fewer road closures.

Police also highlighted issue with TARGAFest, with a large crowd and the consumption of alcohol potentially requiring police intervention.

In speaking of the upcoming event, council said that TARGAFest will now be in the afternoon,

and is planned to host family-friendly activities.

Rather than a street stage, the event will be a showing of vehicles with music and activities and will start at 2pm on Saturday February 11 on the High St Median Strip in Mansfield.

Council said that as drivers will no longer be racing as they return to Mansfield from Eildon, the timing of the event encourages participants to increase the direct economic benefit to Mansfield Shire with increased hospitality

bookings from 6pm, at the close of the event.

Council conducted a survey of race participants to estimate economic benefit derived directly from drivers and said TARGA teams reported spending more than $470,000 in Mansfield on accommodation, retail, and hospitality prior to and during the event.

The cost to council for the 2022 event was $41,463.82.

Cr Paul Sladdin said TARGA High Country was a signature event for the shire.

“When you look at the

cost, which would be around $800 per week, businesses in Mansfield, in the absence of a tourism plan, see it as an investment not a cost,” he said.

“84 per cent of businesses supported the continuation of TARGA. “I spoke with a few hospitality and accommodation venues, too, and I know there’s been a criticism that the event is Buller-based, but businesses in town say otherwise.”

The next event in February 2023 is the final event defined in the current agreement.
