The Mansfield Secondaryy College g is celebrating g 60 yyears of education in the Shire

MANSFIELD Secondary College has celebrated 60 years of education in Mansfield with a range of events held over the past week. The culmination of the celebrations came on Friday afternoon when the whole school attended an assembly with students, teachers and some parents where they were joined with past students and guests from the Department of Education. spoke about his years at the school (then known as Mansfield High School) in the early 1960s through to his graduation at the end of Year 12 (then known as Matriculation). He recalled that classes, although co-ed, were very much divided and segregated with boys doing the more traditional trades such as woodwork and metalwork, and science subjects, while the girls attended sewing, cooking and typing classes.

Mr Gerrans spoke generously about school sports, the competitions between the convent school and the high school, excursions, challenges and what was then a very different school life to what it is today. He finished his recollections by listing a couple of students who graduated with him and where the lives have finished up. Current school council president Andrew Howie

very beginning in 1962 with the aims of making a difference, allow the school to grow and be inclusive of the community. He said how lucky we are to live in a town like Mansfield, a very supportive community. At the conclusion of the official presentations school principal Tim Hall presented a medallion to one of the school’s first students, Jill Murphy, who was also in attendance. ■ Continued page 6
