A NIGHT TO REMEMBER AFTER several COVID-imposed postponements, last week saw St Mary’s hall finally transformed into the Debutante Ball for last year’s cohort of debutantes. The ball was coordinated by Sue Dolling and Cath Mahoney, who re-organised the event a total of five times from the original 2021 timeslot. In the end, the night proved to be a huge success, with 235 guests attending the event to celebrate the debut of the 13 young ladies and their partners. Fairy tale home race Mansfield horse racing g returned to the shire on the weekend,, serving g as a fitting g tribute to Noel Egan g HORSE racing returned to Mansfield on the weekend in noble fashion. There were many highlights for the large crowd in attendance on Saturday for the official Mansfield Autumn Races. Mansfield District Racing Club (MDRC) president Leanne Backwell deemed the additional picnic race meeting on Mansfield’s calendar a success and thanked the hard-working

MDRC committee for their efforts to make it happen. “The aim of racing in April was to assist Country Racing Victoria to complete a full fixture of racing for 2021/2022,” she said. “COVID restrictions and storm damage to some southern tracks had prevented some meetings from going ahead in 2021. “It enabled trainers, jockeys and horses to gain points towards end of year awards.

“The benefit to the club and patrons was high quality fields and thrilling racing.” Especially notable was Race 3 - The Noel Egan Memorial, honouring the renowned local horseman and former race club committee member who passed away recently, provided a fairy tale scenario. Racehorse So You Shop, trained by Noel’s son Gerald

and ridden by his long-time friend Ray Douglas - and owned by MDRC committee members Phillip Corr and Lyn Wright, who share a long association with the Egan family - swooped in the straight to snatch victory in the last few strides. It was an emotional win for all connections and the three generations of the Egan family in attendance. Off the track, Mansfield racing’s fashion

ambassadors Adrianne Moore and Tess Southgate enjoyed greeting visitors to the course and rewarding the best dressed with sashes and prizes. Children were entertained with giant games on the lawn, face painting and Easter egg hunts, while adults enjoyed music from DK Wunderkind and cocktails mixed by the staff of the Mansfield Hotel. The next race meeting

at Mansfield is the Marks Supa IGA Melbourne Cup Picnic Races on Tuesday, November 1 - traditionally an annual highlight for the local community. After two years of cancellation due to COVID restrictions, the MDRC said they are excited that the event will return with its traditional glamour, and also promised some new innovations. ■ Race results page 3
