ART TRAIL THE Mansfield Open Studio Trail drew crowds of appreciative locals and visitors over the long weekend. With events cancelled across the region due to weather concerns, indoor pursuits proved a popular alternative. Photographer and ceramicist Emily McCormack welcomed art lovers into her Scullys Lane studio, a converted shearing shed on the family farm. Further coverage page 21. PHOTO: Emma Oliver

RACES RAINED OUT

Cup weekend cancelled HEAVY rainfall continues to wreak havoc, with the biggest weekend on Mansfield’s calendar largely cancelled due to wet weather. A number of events at last weekend’s High Country Festival, including The Bush Market, Martin’s Garage Grand Parade, and the Cup Day Picnic Races, made the difficult decision to cancel late last week, with the forecast providing little hope of a change in the sodden conditions around town. Not all was lost, with a number of events still able to go ahead or relocate to alternative locations. MOST, Median to Rare,

and the Art Exhibition all forged ahead, as did a couple of book sales. But the sting was felt around town, with retailers and organisers saddened at the missed opportunity which usually brings so much to Mansfield. “We are terribly disappointed that the rain has affected the delivery of some of the events during the High Country

Festival,” said Mansfield Shire Mayor James Tehan. “This is the biggest event on our calendar and we know it is enjoyed by our community and is a major drawcard attracting a huge amount of visitation to the area. “We were able to move a number of events to more suitable locations that can accommodate a large number of participants safely and comfortably,” added Mayor Tehan. Many contingency plans were considered and progressively ruled out as being unsuitable for safety

reasons, vehicle access and space requirements. Local makers and producers who had already invested in their stalls were able to relocate to sites within the Sporting Complex for a small local market on Saturday. The catalytic downpour last Wednesday created a number of road hazards, with flash flooding and fallen trees around the district. Ford Creek next to the Mansfield Botanic Park was inundated, flowing fast and almost at road level. The annual Mansfield

Autism Statewide Services Breakfast on the Lawn, a festival tradition of more than 30 years, cancelled late Wednesday. And the Mansfield District Racing Club regretfully announced that the Marks IGA Melbourne Cup Day Picnic Races had been cancelled due to the wet conditions. The race club thanked patrons who had purchased tickets and packages and asked for patience as it coordinated a refund system. The list of cancellations was growing by Thursday

with the festival opening events of the Torch Light Parade, the youth FReeZA gig and the much anticipated fireworks all cancelled. The Saturday morning Martin’s Garage Grand Parade was the next victim, its cancellation disappointing a large number of entrants and expectant spectators. “Council is assessing the financial impact on business and community and partnering with others to assess the regional impact as our neighbouring shires have also had significant events cancelled this long weekend,” Mayor Tehan said.
