THE new Mansfield sports complex was officially opened on Friday, providing a major longfought win for the community. The $8.99 million project was jointly funded, with $3.4 million provided by the Federal Government, $4.85 million by the State Government and $734,400 by Mansfield Shire Council. Among a throng of staff, students, club members, officials and other politicians, Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie came to town and officially opened the stadium last week, saying the new complex will leave a lasting legacy for the community, as it means more kids, families and locals looking for a friendly game or a shot at competition can do so in their very own region. “The sports complex will also be available as a facility for community groups to use for educational purposes, meaning more chances to both play and learn in Mansfield,” Senator McKenzie said. “By investing in this project, we have not just invested in a sports complex - we have invested in the local community, in much-needed jobs and the region’s economy, and in a stronger future for Mansfield. “This forms part of the Federal Government’s strong track record of investing in the future of regional Victoria, with this project building on previous local investments such as $200,000 for the Mansfield Armchair Cinema refurbishment and $50,000 for the Mansfield Station Precinct activation. “The project also provided a critical boon for local employment and the economy, with 21 jobs supported during construction and another three ongoing operational jobs set to be created. “The new facilities include two multi-sport outdoor courts,

opening up more sporting and fitness opportunities for the growing community population.” Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes was also there to open proceedings, and said that aside from constructing and fitting-out the new dual-court multi-sport indoor stadium, the project delivered important associated facilities. “The complex includes two change-rooms that are accessible internally and externally, offices and storerooms, a foyer area, 55 metres of spectator seating, parking for at least 80 cars, a bus turn-around facility, plus lighting and landscaping,” Ms Symes said. “This will mean locals and visitors alike can comfortably use the complex to play or watch. “This complex is for everyone bringing the community together in person once again to enjoy important local events and celebrations.” Mayor of Mansfield Shire Council James Tehan said the new facilities will help increase revenue for local retail trade in the longer term by increasing visitation to the area. “I’m thrilled to have partnered with the Australian and Victorian governments to make this project a reality, increasing local amenity to attract even more people to this beautiful region,” Cr Tehan said. “With nearby attractions like the Great Victorian Rail Trail, Alpine National Park and Buller Ski Resort, we are building on local strengths and meeting growing demands to ensure Mansfield and surrounds continues to be a great place to live, work, play and visit.” ■ Continued page 3
