ON a perfect Australia Day summer morning in the shade of the Mansfield Botanic Park, Margaretanne Hood was announced as the 2022 Mansfield Shire Citizen of the Year. Throughout her 38-year career in the health sector, Margaretanne has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the overall health of the Mansfield community and more recently returned from retirement to take up the challenge of establishing and running the COVID clinic in Mansfield. While presenting the honor, Mansfield mayor James Tehan said Margaretanne’s award reflected her leadership, skill and dedication. “Margaretanne Hood epitomises the dedication and care of our healthcare professionals,” he said. “I’m delighted to acknowledge her work and the sustained contributions she’s made to the health of our community during her career.” Margaretanne’s extensive and varied professional career commenced in Mansfield and culminated in her being appointed as the Mansfield District Hospital director of nursing in 2012, a role she served until her well-deserved retirement in October 2020. In that time she was also a manager of the Visitor Nursing Service that coordinates home help and is at times extremely challenging given the geographical constraints of the shire.

Margaretanne was also a dedicated midwife, as was noted by the mayor in his speech, noting that she helped deliver his first child. Returning from retirement, she prolonged her service to the community by establishing and successfully running the COVID Vaccination Clinic, which she started from scratch, securing and training a workforce and converting the Buckland Centre to an efficient vaccination hub. Further Australia Day award winners were also announced across four other categories. Zaldah Kirley was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year after a long list of community services that has been undertaken over her lifetime, not to mention that she is a successful businesswoman, music entertainer and former shire councillor. It has often been said that she is the first on the doorstep of anyone in crisis, offering support and assistance. At 88 years of age she still spends her time looking out for the wellbeing of others, including her considerable family (she is the mother of 11). Other nominees were Sylvia Ash, Genevieve Bolwell, Bill Copley, Ray Robinson, Tom Thoburne and Sue Wilson. ■ Continued pages 2-3
