Green light for museum After yyears of planning p g and fundraising, g, the brand new Mansfield Heritage g Museum has the go-ahead g A NEW state-of-theart museum is to be constructed at the Mansfield Station Precinct.

The ‘Mansfield Heritage Museum’ will showcase Mansfield’s history, inviting visitors and community members to explore and learn about local history throughout the ages.

The Mansfield Historical Society has raised approximately $90,000 through community donations for this project, which in turn has attracted over $1.18 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

When acknowledging Mansfield’s proud history, federal member for Indi Dr Helen Haines said she was absolutely delighted that federal funding will enable the Mansfield Historical Society to build its long awaited heritage museum.

“This project is a testament to the Mansfield community working together to achieve such a fantastic project - the Mansfield Historical Society, the Mansfield Shire, the Mansfield Cultural Heritage and Arts Centre (MCHAC), Community Bank Mansfield and District, Taungurung Land and Waters Council and the Gadhaba Local Aboriginal Network are all to be congratulated,” she said.

“The heritage museum will be a valuable addition to the tourist offering in Mansfield, as well as giving locals the ability to learn more about their local history.”

The Community Bank Mansfield and District provided seed funding for the initial concept and will cover the final project shortfall.

Mayor James Tehan said the museum would be a fantastic addition to the Mansfield Station Precinct.

“Mansfield residents have been calling for the establishment of a museum for more than 40 years in order to preserve our proud history before it is lost in time.

“The Mansfield Heritage Museum promises to contribute to the creation of a vibrant hub with the potential to host community events, present an active gateway to Mansfield township, provide a linking point in the local pedestrian and bicycle network, provide educational opportunities, and celebrate local indigenous and cultural history.”

Neil O’Halloran, president of the Mansfield Historical Society, said he was grateful to council and the Australian Government for the support shown for this project.

“This project has been a long time coming,” Mr

O’Halloran said.

“The community has shown its support and with council’s partnership, we will now see the decades of hard work come to life.”

Chairman of the Community Bank Mansfield and District board David Mayne said: “Having funded the Mansfield Historical Society’s initial concept and design back in 2009, this is a great example of how community bank seed funding can help to leverage additional funding.

“We are proud to support this initiative to help celebrate and preserve the history of Mansfield and surrounding districts.”

The former Mansfield

station closed to trains in 1978.

At that time, the land was set aside for community use.

The land is currently home to the Mansfield Historical Society and adjacent is the Visitor Information Centre.

The Great Victorian Rail Trail begins and/or ends at the Mansfield Station Precinct.

The treasurer of the Mansfield Historical Society (MHS) Peter Gardner said that the MHS continues to raise further funds for the project to support the final fit-out of the museum.

Indi comes first Haines vows to p put electorate at top p of list with anyy decision she makes INDI Independent MP Helen Haines is not letting the glory of her emphatic election victory or a call from incoming Prime Minister Anthony Albanese go to her head, saying there’s a lot of work to do and it starts this week.

It was a massive win for Dr Haines who has gained 40.96 per cent of the primary vote and enters her second term of parliament alongside a wave of Independents who won the favour of voters in their respective electorates.

But while the North East federal MP said she will work with these Independents, who have also chosen to adopt the election campaign platforms of climate action and the formation of an integrity commission, she noted one distinction.

“I am the only rural and regional Independent MP on the crossbench and looking after my electorate is first and foremost on my priority list,” Dr Haines said.

“With this comes strong action on climate change, to establish a network of agricultural extension officers in regional hubs across Australia, and to continue to advocate for improved telecommunications.”

One of the numerous climate initiatives is to lower the cost of solar roof top batteries by up to $3000 with new incentives through the existing Small-Scale Renewable Energy scheme.

Under Dr Haines’ plan for agriculture Australian farmers would benefit from on-theground technical support to help them access carbon markets, adopt new low-emissions technologies and retain access to export markets.

Bill, however, it was not passed through parliament.

“All the incoming Independents have indicated they support my model to establish a robust federal integrity commission,” Dr Haines said.

This model differs to the one the Coalition attempted to pass which Dr Haines said had design flaws in not allowing public referrals or public hearings.

Labor went to the election promising to introduce a federal integrity commission by Christmas, and Dr Haines said it

makes sense for her Bill - which has support politically and through the legal profession - to be used to achieve the desired outcome.

Prime Minister Albanese wished Dr Haines well and congratulated her on her reelection but she made a point of highlighting that not all seats have been counted to determine whether it’s a minority or majority government.

“I will work with all sides of parliament and I will vote on each piece of legislation on its own merits, like I always have, but I will always put Indi first,” she said.

“I have a substantial list of shovel ready infrastructure projects across the nine local government areas of Indi and I will speak with the Federal Government, including the treasurer, with the goal to achieve funding for these.”

Dr Haines’ 7.31 per cent swing in the two-candidate preferred vote over the next best, Ross Lyman of the Liberal Party, has been a thrilling achievement for the Indi MP, her team and growing number of supporters.

“I am very grateful to receive such an endorsement with this big margin and I will continue to work hard for this electorate,” she said.

“The vote across Australia everywhere shows that people are sick of the big party politics and the conflict, and they’re after real representatives in parliament.”

More than half of us in Indi are giving polling day the miss

By JEFF ZEUSCHNER MORE than half of all eligible Indi voters were missing on polling day, having chosen instead to vote early at the electorate’s six pre-poll centres or via postal vote.

More than 68,000 (57.9 per cent) of Indi’s 117,571 eligible voters cast their choice early with 17,635 (15 per cent) voting

via post and 50,555 (43 per cent) at pre-poll.

Indi was in the top nine electorates across the country for early voting, behind Hinker (QLD, 62.9%), Flinders (VIC, 61.3%), Fraser (VIC, 60.2%), Fisher (QLD, 60/1%), Maranoa (QLD, 59.2%), Longman (QLD, 59.2%), Dickson (QLD, 58.7%) and Bowman (QLD, 58.5%).

Nationally, according to the ABC’s chief election analyst Antony Green, a total of 2,731,060 postal vote applications had been received representing 15.9 per cent of enrolment.

This compares to 1,538,139 in 2019 or 9.4 per cent of enrolment.

Mr Green said final pre-polls totalled 5,541,757, compared to a total of 4,778,856 in 2019.

There were just under a million votes taken on Friday, 923,852 in total and 208,000 more than on the final day in 2019.

Despite there being five fewer days of pre-polling in 2022 because of the change in the law, pre-poll votes nationally for 2022 represent 32.2 per cent of enrolled voters compared to 29.9 per cent in 2019.

ON THE BROKEN: Palaeontologist Professor John Long with his team Josh Bland, Caitlin Hassett and Tas Dickson from Flinders University.

The search for fossils and learning on the Broken PROFESSOR Dr John Long is not a stranger to Mansfield district having visited here often and for more than 10 years having owned a holiday home in the district.

He took up finding fossils in the rivers and creeks of the area as part of his career and teaching palaeontology students.

His most recent visit saw him bring a group of 17 students with him for a three day search of the South Blue Range and Broken River where more than 100 years ago many famous fossils were found.

“We were participating in a third year palaeontology student field trip from Flinders University in Adelaide, learning about local geology and palaeontology, searching for fossil fishes in the South Blue Range and along parts of the Broken River,” Dr Long said.

“We were here last year, so this is the second time we have run this trip.

“The area is very significant for its fish fossils which were first discovered here over 140 years ago.”

The vertebrate microremains was discovered by Dr Jillian Garveys from La Trobe.

“My biggest discoveries from the region were naming all the new species of Mt Howitt fishes (15 species) as well as re-describing and re-naming most of the Mansfield fossil fishes, eg I named new fossil fishes as Mansfieldiscus, Delatitia, Howqualepis, etc. In 1989 I named Barameda, the large 4 metre long predator from the Mansfield deposits, and a new species we named after Harold Mitchell was Barameda mitchelli,” Dr Long said.

Dr Long has a long and interesting history in palaeontology.

His love of fossil collecting began at age seven and he graduated with a PhD from Monash University in 1984, specialising in Palaeozoic fish evolution.

His primary focus is to research the early evolution of vertebrates, using fossils to determine the stages of the assembly of the vertebrate body plan.

One such find was the vertebrate microremains from the presumed earliest Tournaisian of the Devil’s Plain Formation, Mansfield Group, from the Mansfield Basin.

“We have built a new vertebrate palaeontology lab at Flinders to develop new techniques to prepare and study fossils,” he said.

Dr Long works with postgraduate and honours students wishing to develop careers in

biological sciences with multidisciplinary training on early vertebrate palaeontology, anatomy and general evolutionary studies.

Among Dr Long’s projects was the extensive investigation, Describing new finds of 380 million year old fishes from Gogo (Western Australia), and 390 million year old fish fossils form Antarctica.

Dr Long has written many books and publications on fossils, dinosaurs, the evolution of... including children’s books and pictorials.

The Rise of Fishes, 500 Million years of Evolution, is just one of his early books.

He has been a prolific writer of books and in particular loves creating picture books for children to help them understand fossils, dinosaurs and evolution.

Talk continues for council and comm group Community group discuss concerns with council, who defend p planning process g strategy gy and consultation p FOLLOWING the recent ‘Let’s Talk’ community meeting where residents discussed concerns around Mansfield’s population growth and residential development, forum leaders have met with council delegates and planners in an effort to improve lines of communication.

Communication has been the main issue raised by members of the community group and councillors responded to this indirectly at the most recent shire meeting.

Confusion surrounds the expectation for current councillors’ attendance at the initial meeting, with forum leaders noting that the event was well advertised and councillors were invited, and council saying that no invitations were received and councillors are not expected to attend every community gathering in the absence of one.

“It is apparent that communication between the shire and concerned citizens is not working effectively,” said forum leaders Ed Adamson and Carol Lowden, in the most recently circulated meeting notes.

“One person put it to the meeting that we are not reading what the shire puts out.

“When one development application can run to 80 or 100 pages of sometimes very complex (but not necessarily very relevant) information and the Mansfield Shire Planning Scheme of 869 pages includes information on ocean beach situations, irrelevancy and a ‘one size fits all’ planning scheme, paperwork gets in the way of clarity and understanding.

“The planning scheme is a state-wide document that doesn’t do justice for Mansfield.

“Mansfield should and can have its own overlays and provisions that reflect local needs, aspirations and requirements.”

Overall issues highlighted by the group which were presented to council delegates and planners included:

1. Infrastructure limitations, including primary school and water limitations; 2. Mt Buller Rd/Highton Lane blind corner and Greenvale Lane/Crosbys Lane intersection remedies; 3. Mt Buller Road service lane and new subdivision access; 4. Drainage and flooding concerns with inadequate infrastructure; 5. Main street and parking issues; 6. Misleading and opaque processes, ‘buck passing’ and lack of consultation; 7. Lack of clarity and foresight about the provision of open spaces; 8. Information provided to the public in processes/consultation is able to be understood by residents; 9. Lack of shire notification to property occupiers near proposed developments, including non-ratepayers and neighbouring streets.

Additional issues highlighted for discussion included population caps, areas that should be declared non-growth areas, lot sizes, health, aged care, and removal of native vegetation.

Following discussion with council delegates and planners, councillors opened up with their views at the most recent shire meeting, when adopting the Mansfield Planning Strategy and a Planning Scheme Amendment for 104 Dead Horse Lane.

“I recommend people interested in where our community is heading to get a copy of the Planning Strategy document,” said Cr Mark Holcombe.

“It clearly sets out where we’re heading from a planning point of view, with both objectives and strategy underpinning that.

“I think this has been the larg-

est community engagement that I’ve seen, since I’ve been watching council meetings anyway.

“It really addresses the shortage of housing, shortage of rentals, where we’re going to put our housing and provide the younger generation looking for their first homes.”

Cr Rohan Webb echoed Cr Holcombe’s sentiments, encouraging interested community members to get a copy of the document, while Cr Steve Rabie added that when they were running for council it was “loud and clear” that planning needed to be fixed.

Mayor James Tehan thanked his fellow councillors and council officers for attending four open days in the Main Street where the public could come along and view strategy and have input.

“We answered a lot of submissions, there was a lot of consultation,” said Cr Tehan. “(The Planning Strategy) was out for consultation for nine weeks - if you couldn’t find this strategy you weren’t looking hard enough.

“We sent hundreds of letters, put ads in the local paper, held community drop-in sessions at council and online, and as a result, we were able to shape the Mansfield Planning Strategy to accurately reflect the community’s needs.

“It sets the path for where we’re going until 2040.

“It is critical because it will facilitate the development of urban land uses, protects areas of significant agricultural productivity, it is environmentally significant, and identifies the need for additional infrastructure to service our evolving community.

“There are additional actions to protect grandfather trees and our valued environments and landscapes, ensuring future developments don’t negatively impact the beauty of our ridgelines, lakes, rivers and mountains.”

Council used consultant SGS Economics and Planning to help complete the Mansfield Planning Strategy.

They researched the shire, reviewing previous strategic plans, state and local government policies, the economic state of the shire and other factors that were considered in the formulation of the final Strategy.

Cr Mark Holcombe added that the Planning Scheme Amendment for 104 Dead Horse Lane, which is an example of the rezoning of Low Residential (minimum 2000sqm or approximately half acre lots) to General Residential (allowing closer to 1000sqm or a quarter acre lots), reflects a real effort to address the current housing issues being experienced in Mansfield.

“We’re hearing everywhere about housing shortages; it was a federal election issue, but no one has any real answers,” said Cr Holcombe.

“I think this is a great example of us doing something.

“It’s no secret that there’s a housing shortage in Mansfield.

“There are no rentals; I was told that by an agent who’s been here a long time.

“So there’s an issue with that and first home buyers who can’t afford to get into the market.

“And there’s a problem with getting staff here; one of the reasons is because there’s no houses, certainly no affordable houses.”

It was further noted by manager for planning and environment, Melissa Crane, who all councillors thanked for the hard work her team put into the Planning Strategy, that 104 Dead Horse Lane was a good example of the opportunity community members had to review what was happening, with it being exhibited three times at different stages - first in the Planning Strategy, second upon amendment, and third when any future developers apply for a planning permit.

THE battle against soaring public liability insurance premiums continued, with Mansfield leading the way in a nationwide protest.

The stand taken by local adventure tourism operators, business people and community groups was set to be bolstered by protesters from around the North East.

Partly as a result of the public liability insurance crisis, locals Chris Stoney and Rachel Parsons prepared for a sad farewell as they sold off more than 40 horses,

marking the end of their 17-year-old trail riding business.

A coroner’s court was told that the Mansfield public had lost confidence in the service and level of care at the Wangaratta District Base Hospital following the death of a Booroolite patient, Ian Watson.

And in sport, Mansfield Eagles coach Chris Laing said the side needed to lift or its season was as good as over, after the side put in its worst performance of the year in a 55 point loss to GVFL strugglers Tatura.

Conservative parties run the risk of continuing to lose the support of voters who believe in Menzies’ inclusive liberalism but who were offended this year not only by the Morrison government’s continuing and strident pandering to the intolerant right but also by the adversarial nastiness of “right to rule” messaging - via emails, advertisements and mailouts such as those authorised by Senator Jane Hume - just as

they were offended by the cynical scare tactics and dirty pool played in 2019.

No doubt many regional conservative candidates are fine, idealistic people and could well be effective parliamentary performers on our behalf, but to gain the confidence of voters they need to tell state and federal party strategists to back off so that they can focus on positive messages about forward thinking policies rather than insulting our intelligence by playing the man (or woman) instead of the ball.

MANSFIELD’S own MAD Studios performed at last weekend’s Front and Centre competition in Rutherglen, taking home a first and second place in the under 13 troupe lyrical and jazz sections.

Emily Doig took home second place in her own choreography section and fourth place in her jazz solo, with special mention in a very strong contemporary section.

MAD Studios principal Maddison Kay said she is incredibly proud of their achievements over the weekend.

“It’s been an incredible experience for all students who have now got the fire back in their bellies after what has been a challenging two years,” she said.

“It was an uplifting weekend with a friendly atmosphere from all studio goers.

“We’re looking forward to our next competition happening in Kyabram in late June.”

JAMES and Catriona Wilson hosted a Roaring 20s Soiree last weekend as a fundraiser for Rosehaven.

The evening raised $4840 to assist with their respite care program.

At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 Catriona and James thought it would be fun to host a post pandemic party.

They originally thought they would be able to host a roaring 20s party, but like many events, it was not possible.

At the beginning of this year when there was more normality they revisited the idea of hosting a 1920s soiree with the funds raised going to Rosehaven

to assist with their respite care.

The event was a sell out and each group was competing to win the most beautifully presented table.

The results were amazing with tables featuring everything from a marquee and champagne towers, to ostrich feathers, chandeliers and even live fish in a fish bowl.

Some guests even arrived in style with vintage cars.

They were kept entertained with music from DJ Liam ‘Bugsy’ Wilson and tried their hands at poker.

Everyone also helped to celebrate Toni Appleby’s birthday with a stunning Gatsby cake from Delatite

Special Occasions.

Catriona and James were thrilled with the success of the event.

“We were thrilled that $4840 has been raised,” said Catriona.

Discover High Country small-scale producers DURING her recent visit to Mansfield to present funding to our hospital, Upper House MP for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes also announced Swiftcrest Distillery has been awarded $100,000 for their Tasting Pod project as part of Stream Three of the government’s SmallScale and Craft Program.

“We are proud to support hardworking and resilient small-scale and craft producers like Swiftcrest to create unique experiences which have the potential to attract visitors to the area and deliver flow-on benefits for jobs and tourism,” Ms Symes said.

Swiftcrest said they will create a unique tourism experience that showcases their and local agribusinesses’ produce.

Two pods will be constructed on the scenic hill of their Mansfield property.

“The pods provide an intelligent use of the land, that not only protects the vista but also promotes Mansfield’s natural beauty,” said Hank Thierry, founder of Swiftcrest Distillery.

Only 10 kilometres from town, the Tasting Pod experience will be a private dining space with panoramic views for all four seasons.

There will be a space for “making memories” with family and friends while immersed in the natural vistas of Mansfield and the High Country.

The pods will be stocked with local produce and staff will be on hand to explain where the unique produce comes from, talk about each producer’s story and why their local produce is so special.

“If a farmer supplies freerange lamb cutlets for instance, we will have created a video on-farm to accompany the experience demonstrating how to cook the product,” said Hank.

“The videos will be available to play in the pods allowing visitors to visually connect with each farm.”

Stream Three of the program provided grants of between $25,000 and $100,000 to eligible small-scale and craft agribusinesses to support projects that create a unique visitor experience, engaging multiple smallscale and craft producers, and putting their regions on the map.

The goal of the program is to support the 10-year agriculture strategy to create a sector that is strong, innovative and sustainable.

TASTING PODS: The Thierrys’ business plan uses pods as they have a smaller environmental footprint and impact, compared to a more traditional cellar door. It also allows Swiftcrest to open up to the public on days when the distillery is in operation without affecting production.

Mansfield planning strategy adopted THE Mansfield Planning Strategy 2022, which guides land use through to 2040, has been formally adopted

by Mansfield Shire Council.

The strategy responds to the pressures of population growth while determining the priorities for the shire’s land use.

It considers how council can “protect and enhance the character of the shire”.

Mayor James Tehan said it provided clear guidance on important planning and development issues.

“This document ad-

dresses critical community concerns such as housing affordability while applying design controls that ensure new development suits the character of our towns,” said Cr Tehan.

“Mansfield’s median house price has gone up more than 21 per cent.

“This has a major impact on the ability for someone to enter the Mansfield property market or even lease a rental property.

“This strategy ensures we can provide adequate land for housing.

“The strategy facilitates orderly development during this time of massive population growth.

“It considers parklands, streetscape, significant trees, landscape, environment and native vegetation.

“It prevents the fragmentation of productive agricultural land by clearly maintaining the town’s boundary.

“There are additional actions to protect grandfather trees and our valued environments and landscapes, ensuring future developments don’t negatively

impact the beauty of our ridgelines, lakes, rivers and mountains.”

Council used consultant SGS Economics and Planning to help complete the Mansfield Planning Strategy.

They undertook extensive research into the shire, reviewing previous strategic plans, state and local government policies, the economic state of the shire and many other factors that were considered in the formulation of the final strategy, as well as undertaking an extensive community engagement.

Road preparation for resealing ROAD preparation works will begin across Mansfield Shire this month with many roads being prepared for resealing in spring this year.

Council’s $184,591 reseal preparation contract was awarded to Countrywide Asphalt.

The contractor will undertake the preparation works throughout June with allowance in the program for wet weather.

The preparation works include removal and replacement of existing road sections aimed to address rutting, cracks and potholes, intended to ensure the best sealing outcome.

“This year we have invested more than ever before in our roads,” said Mayor James Tehan.

“Concern about our roads is identified as one of the key issues in our Community Satisfaction Survey

each year and we understand how important our road network is for our economy and community.

General manager infrastructure and planning Kirsten Alexander said a number of factors were taken into consideration when prioritising roads for inclusion in the resealing program.

“We are always listening to community feedback and reviewing current conditions, surface defects and the effects of heavy vehicles on our roads when determining those that require the most urgent attention,” said Ms Alexander.

“The roads scheduled for works are those deemed in the most pressing need for attention.”

The existing sealed sections of the following roads are scheduled to undergo reseal preparation works:

 Apollo Street, Mansfield;  Curia Street, Mansfield;  Olympic Street, Mansfield;  Kidston Parade, Mansfield;  Nillahcootie Road, Barjarg;  Merton - Strathbogie Road, Merton;  O’Hanlon Road, Mansfield;  Howes Creek Road, Mansfield;  Crosby Street, Mansfield;  Monkey Gully Road, Mansfield.

Traffic management will be in place between 7am and 5pm while the works are under way in these areas.

Access to affected businesses and premises will be maintained during these times.

To facilitate access during school drop off and pick up periods the works in Apollo Street will pause between 8am-9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm.

“We’re grateful to the many community members who participated in the 10week consultation, whether they spoke with us at a marquee on the main street or came to one of our online or in-person forums,” said Cr Tehan.

“We sent hundreds of letters, put ads in the local paper, held community dropin sessions at council and online, and as a result, we were able to shape the Mansfield Planning Strategy to accurately reflect the community’s needs.

“Since we began our term at council, community satisfaction with our town planning has improved significantly.

“This document is a culmination of important strategic work and we are very pleased with the result.”

The strategic planning team will now begin work on the implementation plan, which includes work to be done over the next 10 years.

Rezoning in Dead Horse Lane COUNCIL has resolved to support the rezoning of part of the land at 104 Dead Horse Lane, Mansfield from Farming Zone to General Residential 1 Zone, as identified in the Mansfield Planning Strategy.

The rezoning and development of the land will make more efficient residential use of land that is accessible to central Mansfield, allowing a full range of urban services to be more efficiently and cost effectively provided to the land.

According to the Mansfield Planning Strategy 2022,

adopted by Mansfield Shire Council earlier in the same meeting, it identifies a shortage of land supply that the Mansfield township is experiencing and the pressures that exist due to an identified housing affordability crisis.

It states the rental and social housing shortages are also exacerbated at the local level, adding to the pressures of housing availability and driving property market prices up.

New housing stock has continued to out-perform the numbers estimated in previous supply and demand

estimates outlined under both the Mansfield Township Housing Strategy (April 2018) and the Mansfield Town Structure Plan 2015 leading to the current shortage of available land that can be readily developed.

The Mansfield Town Structure Plan 2015 discouraged residential rezoning for the short to medium term (10 years).

Nearly eight years have now elapsed since that plan was developed, and council says that the passage of time has demonstrated that this timeframe was signifi-

cantly overestimated, given the current need for the new rezoning of residential land.

The structure plan forecasted that 45 new homes would be required each year until 2035, and that only 900 new homes would be required by 2031.

Mansfield Shire has had over 100 homes constructed every year since 2012, with 1200 new homes built between 2011 and 2021 - more than double what was predicted.

The Mansfield Township Housing Strategy (April 2018) predicted that the population of Mansfield would

grow by 1.6 per cent to reach a population of 4098 by 2031.

This was less than the structure plan’s prediction of a two per cent growth rate.

In data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2020, Mansfield had experienced a 3.3 per cent population growth, with the current population of Mansfield being 5421 - 1323 more people than anticipated and nine years earlier than predicted.

“It is these significantly underestimated predictions that have had a major impact on land availability and

affordability in Mansfield,” said Mansfield Shire mayor James Tehan.

“While the Mansfield Planning Strategy has measures to address this, the timeframes for implementation are longer than this amendment and will not assist in addressing the immediate issues faced in relation to housing in Mansfield quickly enough, leading to this site-specific amendment.

“Supporting this amendment will help facilitate available land sooner to support our growing community.”

concerns about the safety of the road.”

Heavy rainfall and high traffic levels over the long weekends in April contributed to the decline in the road surface condition.

Improvements include increasing the road width from four to five metres in sections, extension of drainage culverts and construction of improved swale drains to divert water away from the road.

To improve the longevity of the road surface, a road stabilisation agent has been added to the road pavement during the gravel re-sheeting works.

The works have been completed before winter, aiming to improve road condition and safety by helping to prevent water ponding in the middle of the road and contributing to rapid deterioration of the road surface.

Agreement reached for Swiftcrest Distillery WHEN several planning objections to the Swiftcrest Distillery were received at the April meeting of Mansfield Shire Council, council asked that the issues raised by the objectors be considered and that the matter be deferred along with the permit to be reconsidered at a later stage.

A month later at its meeting on Tuesday, May 17, council approved the issuing of a planning permit for Swiftcrest Distillery after all parties removed their objections.

This will allow two tasting eco-pods and a kitchen building to provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism experience.

Mayor James Tehan said he was pleased that council was able to help facilitate this outcome.

“Council officers were able to work with the applicant and with community members to find a satisfactory solution for all parties,” said Cr Tehan.

“We’re grateful for the

open and honest communications between all parties, and their willingness to work together and with council.

“Not only were all planning objections resolved with the applicant being willing to make changes, council was able to address other community concerns around the road network which will ultimately make the space safer for residents and community members.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT It’s the Small Things: musings on the beauty of small schools.

I just played the wrong end-of-break song. H, aged almost 9, hadn’t written his choice for this week’s end-of-lunch-play music on the chart and the soccer game (mixed teams, P-6) was too important to disrupt in order to obtain the correct information. M, aged 8 and a bit, politely informed me that the song was the wrong one. A, double-digits, also came up to me: “Excuse me, Ms Madin…”. S, 11-going-on-21, was confident and respectful, embodying two of our school values whilst correcting my mistake: “You may have looked at the wrong week, Ms Madin…”.

There’s a lot at play here.

Our small school is big on responsibility and student agency. We value confidence, respect, persistence and collaboration. We look out for ourselves, each other and our environment at all times.

It’s the small things that demonstrate how our school values have permeated into our learning culture. No student here is shy of telling each other, the staff or even visitors if someone has made a mistake. They don’t gloat or mock, they simply let us know and offer to help with a solution.

Confidence like this is often found in a selection of students at larger schools. At small schools, it’s universal.

Choosing the end-of-break song for the week is an opportunity to express individuality and share cultural preferences. More than showing off their new favourite, however, the students are keen to hear what others are listening to, often learning the words quickly and showering adoration on new selections. This respectful interest in each other is reflected in our multi-year classroom activities, during sports and at play time.

Who knew that my small mistake would reveal so much about the values of our students at Jamieson Primary? Here, it’s the small things that show us what really matters.

Dodgy driver and high beamer face court A DEFENDANT has received a $750 fine and a six month licence suspension in Mansfield Magistrates Court last week after facing charges related to drink driving and careless driving.

Police prosecutors summarised events from March 2021, when the accused was driving his sedan along Maroondah Highway, Taggerty, when he attempted to turn into Cathedral Lane at a fast rate of speed.

The defendant lost control of his car and slid into the embankment, damaging the front of the vehicle.

He subsequently tried to organise a tow through RACV, and was advised to contact police due to the circumstances.

The defendant didn’t contact the police, however, they were patrolling the area soon after and came upon the scene.

He was administered a preliminary breath test which indicated the presence of alcohol, later confirmed via breath analysis at a concentration of 0.059 at around 9pm that evening.

The defendant was issued two infringement notices relating to drink driving and not having full control of his vehicle.

Agreeing with the basics of the summary, the defendant - who was defending himself but had sought legal advice prior - explained that he and his girlfriend were going to a campsite and had simply spotted the turn too late after ‘cruising along and listening to music’.

He added that after the accident they left the vehicle to attend the campsite, where the accused said he then consumed three light beers during the next two and a half hours, before returning to the vehicle as his girlfriend had left her wallet in the car.

The accident occurred while the defendant was on his green P plates, meaning he needed to maintain a 0.0 reading.

The defendant said he was going to contest the charges, but was advised that it would be an uphill battle considering the circumstances.

A TOW JOB: The defendant lost control of his car and slid into the embankment, damaging the front of the vehicle. said the presiding magistrate “But the responsibility is with you when you’re operating a vehicle.

“We’re all meant to be in control of a working car and drinking minimises the chances of achieving that; drinking and driving is unsafe.”

The magistrate imposed a fine of $750 and suspended the defendant’s licence for the minimum mandatory period of six months.

ANOTHER defendant was given a six month undertaking of good behaviour after facing charges relating to high-beaming a police vehicle.

Prosecutors outlined a summary of events from July 2021.

Police were patrolling the Maroondah Highway at Bonnie Doon when they observed the defendant’s vehicle travelling towards them.

Around 100 metres away, they alleged the defendant activated his high beams as he passed the police vehicle and a second car, before the police u-turned and intercepted him.

The defendant was issued a penalty notice and elected to have the matter heard in court.

Speaking in court, the defendant didn’t accept the prosecution’s summary, and said that it was an

honest mistake; he thought he had the beams off and apologised when the police pulled him over.

He also queried the distance of 100 metres, stating he thought it was closer to 50.

The defendant also requested for a copy of the body camera footage from the police and said he had tried reaching out a number of times and had been refused the footage.

He said that was why he came to court, that he had no intention to high beam anyone, but if he did he sincerely apologised, adding that he knew how frustrating and unsafe it can be, especially on a highway.

The magistrate gave the defendant a sentencing indication of a six month good behaviour undertaking, after which time, should he not offend again, the matter would be dismissed with no record of conviction.

But it would require a change of plea to guilty.

The defendant agreed and the matter was adjourned until November.

Protester’s fine re-imposed A DEFENDANT has been fined $1800 with no conviction recorded after facing charges related to her attendance at a protest rally at Maindample in October last year.

Prosecutors outlined in Mansfield Magistrates Court

last week that the accused had been identified by photographs submitted to police, and that the gathering was in contravention of the chief health officer’s directions at the time.

When police attended the accused’s residence to con-

duct a field interview, she made admissions to being at the gathering and not wearing a face covering.

Police asked the accused if she attended, to which she answered, “Well yeah, it’s there,” indicating the photo, “gosh, unless I have a twin sister.”

The accused was issued an infringement notice for breaching the orders and attending the gathering, but didn’t pay the fine, instead electing to have the matter heard in court.

The accused’s defence said that she recognises the

serious work of police and the court system, but didn’t attend to the fine in a timely manner.

Defence said the accused lives in the local community and attended the gathering with her grandchildren as she was minding them at the time.

She had no income, but had previously owned a shop in town and worked in the community for 20 years.

The original fine of $1817 was re-imposed by the magistrate and rounded down to $1800, with no conviction recorded.

In memory of Frederick Predrag Skrbic - Freddie MANY readers will be familiar with the friendly face of Freddie around town.

A charmer and enthusiastic conversant with his intriguing accent, he often shared aspects of his own life - in which he had been a great sportsman - while also being very interested in the lives of others.

Freddie’s working life was as a multifaceted engineer, an inventor of electronic equipment - originally a research scientist at Siemens in Europe.

Since coming to Australia he had also been a supporter of environmental sustainability and community harmony.

He pioneered community gardening in the Hawthorn DHS property in 2004 and was a Regional Winner of 3 awards within the “Victoria in Bloom” Garden Competition for the Best Edible Water-Wise Garden.

In Mansfield, at the Lovick Avenue DHS property, he founded an organic community garden in 2009, which entails 360 square metres with over 70 trees and edible plants.

He also initiated the tenants’ pollution-free maintenance project.

He received multiple awards in the “Victoria in Bloom” Garden Competitions for the sustainable organic garden he maintained at Lovick Avenue, including a Best-in-State award.

Freddie advocated for a healthy lifestyle, supported the distribution of affordable organic fruit and veggies through supermarkets, was a passionate bicycle rider and volunteered as a fitness co-trainer of sport groups at the Mansfield Sporting Complex.

He was active at the Men’s Shed and was interested in nanotechnology, solar equipment, electric and vintage cars, etc.

He supported community harmony, equality and social justice, with active input in many multicultural and multi-faith community events, both in Melbourne and Mansfield, and was also a donor to these.

Freddie will be remembered as an enthusiastic and cheerful person with a zest for life who loved communicating with and learning about others and practised human values at their best.

Mansfield students represent rural youth

By EMMA OLIVER EARLIER in the year, Hayley Cotterill completed her tenure representing the Mansfield Secondary College as a Rural Youth Ambassador, handing the baton to year 11 student Hilary Murakami.

Nominated by the school, Hilary is one of 15 students from across Victoria to participate in the program for 2022.

And she has already hit the ground running in her role as ambassador, attending her first three-day forum, which was held in Melbourne in the first week of April.

Hilary is thrilled at the honour, and is particularly excited at the prospect of sharing ideas with her regional-based peers.

“I never thought I would be chosen as our school’s Rural Youth Ambassador and I still can’t believe it,” she said.

“I’m really interested in listening to other people’s opinion, and also about following the trajectory of turning an idea into an action.

“I am looking forward to gaining as much experience as possible, along with the leadership skills the forums develop.”

Hilary’s predecessor Hayley is thankful that she was personally given such an amazing opportunity, and

attributes the program to her current confidence.

“When I was nominated I felt completely out of my depth, and questioned whether I was capable of the task,” Hayley said.

“My confidence has grown exponentially, so much so, that at the national forum I felt comfortable guest presenting and addressing the various ministers and decision makers.”

The year-long program culminates in a national forum which was held in Albury and attended by youth ambassadors from across the state, along with their counterparts in South Australia and New South Wales.

Bridget McKenzie, the Minister for Regional Services, along with Fiona Nash, Commissioner for Regional Education, and Katherine Bassett from the Regional Australia Institute took part in the forum, with Hayley commenting on how valuable the experience was not only for personal development, but for getting the group’s ideas out there and heard.

“Minister McKenzie was particularly encouraging and receptive to our ideas,” said Hayley.

“And what we found particularly interesting at the national forum was the commonalities between the states, and then working to-

The Rural Youth Ambassadors program was developed by the Country Education Partnership, to give rural and regional young people the opportunity to develop their leadership skills while also engaging with the education sector and government.

Phil Brown, the project manager from Country Education Partnerships which developed and facilitates the program, accredits the initiative with not only developing young regional leaders, but also with enabling real change and opening up valuable dialogue.

The concept revolves

around bringing young people together over a nine to 12 month period, and giving them the opportunity to explore their experiences around education in their communities.

From this initial exploration, the program then moves to a solution-focused approach.

“Ambassadors are expected to collaborate on a project over the time period, addressing one of the issues that they identified earlier in the year,” said Phil.

“One year the ambassadors hosted a state conference for teachers and principals, and this year - the group which Hayley was a

part of - developed a tool which they submitted to the Department of Education.

“The group developed a resource for the department to circulate to the schools, addressing remote learning and how to deliver education through this platform in a manner that would assist and benefit students.”

The majority of projects that the ambassadors have worked on have come into fruition.

“For instance the State Government implemented an incentive program to attract teachers to regional and rural schools with Rural Youth Ambassadors playing a significant role in getting

this established,” said Phil.

“Another group approached the minister to create the VCE Collaboration Fund to broaden VCE subject choice and the quality of VCE offerings in rural and regional Victoria, through school partnerships.

“The Rural Youth Ambassadors were the main drivers in this $5.2 million initiative.

“Four years ago there was a review of career education, which came about after a meeting between the youth ambassadors and the minister.

“There have been some big outcomes.

“The Education Minister, along with other senior bureaucrats, are always keen to meet up with the Rural Youth Ambassadors and get their input.”

Tracking people who have been involved with the program, one now manages the Buchan Cave Reserve and another is a lawyer who has developed a philanthropic approach to assisting women to integrate back into the community and work force from incarceration “There’s some young people out there doing some really awesome stuff,” Phil said.

“It’s always exciting to meet the new cohort - of which Hilary is a part - and seeing their progression over the program.”

CFA recognises volunteer service

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY COINCIDING with National Volunteers Week (May 16 -20), Maindample CFA Brigade held its annual dinner and presentation night at the Bonnie Doon Hotel on Friday, May 20.

During the evening 13 awards were presented to members who have made significant contributions to the brigade and CFA. Top of the awards was a life member medal to Peter Mahoney who started his CFA service at Mansfield CFA before transferring to Maindample some 18 years ago.

Other presentations were

made for 5-year certificates: Bernadette Semler, Vaughan Semler, Alan Rattenbury, Warren Shepherd and Anne Stewart.

Ten-year awards went to Wendy Cheeseman and John Warne; 15-year medals to Kerrie Heine, Michael Chalker and Pam Zierk-Mahoney; and 20-year awards to Graham McKergow and Adam Leyfield.

Awards to other members who were not present on the night will be given out at a future gathering.

Presenting the awards were D23 acting assistant chief fire officer Rod Railton and Mansfield group officer Rob Gardiner.

Mr Railton congratulated all award recipients saying this was a great little brigade which had served the community for more than 80 years.

He outlined a short history of the Maindample brigade which actually started many years before 1944 when it officially became a brigade and prior to CFA formation.

One recipient of the awards was Anne Stewart whose father, Bernie Cummins snr, had been a captain and founding member of the brigade.

Mr Cummins passed away last year at the age of 102 but was present at the brigade’s

75th birthday celebrations in 2019.

National Volunteer Week across the state was celebrated by many CFA brigades.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering which gives communities the chance to recognise the vital work of volunteers.

“Our members selflessly provide assistance to community members across the state, taking time away from their families, friends and workplaces, to help others,” he said.

“As a former volunteer firefighter myself, I know

that volunteering can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

“Our volunteers come from all walks of life; they are tradies, lawyers, nurses, chefs and farmers - just to name a few.

“The diversity of skills and expertise our volunteers bring to their CFA roles further boosts their brigades and the organisation, for which we are very grateful.”

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is “Better Together” which holds true to CFA. Over the past three years, Australians have experienced major fires, floods and a pandemic.

CFA members have been called on to assist local, Victorian and interstate colleagues to support them in extremely challenging and trying conditions.

“Day after day, we see and hear first-hand the difference our members make, and the impact volunteering has on their communities which is what this week is all about,” Mr Heffernan said.

“CFA is about so much more than just firefighting - with volunteer roles such as community educators, health and safety specialists, or financial supporters, CFA constantly demonstrates that we are ‘better together’.”

Graduating to mainstream Thomas Ryan y - A success storyy for Mansfield Autism

MOVING ON: Thomas Ryan is a recent graduate from Mansfield Autism Statewide Services’ transition program.

THOMAS Ryan’s recent graduation from Mansfield Autism Statewide Services’ transition program to full time student at Mansfield Primary School highlights the importance of early intervention, building skills, collaboration and support.

Claire Ryan, Thomas’ mum, said he’s now excited to get up to go to school.

“He is better at regulating his emotions, and is fast closing the assessment gap with his grade 4 peers,” she said.

“We used to live near Geelong and Thomas was at school and not thriving.

“He clearly needed help and support and the expertise was just not there.

“We moved to Mansfield and enrolled Thomas into the transition program at Mansfield Autism and a year and a half later, they have literally changed our boy for the better.

“He used to be so angry and frustrated and now he’s making friends and asking for help.

“He’s got a list of kids to invite to his upcoming birthday party for the first time.

“It honestly brings a tear to my eye.

“The graduation from Mansfield Autism was pretty emotional, but we’re still involved with Thomas receiving support from our in-home autism practitioner and we’re so looking forward to attending a family camp.”

The process of transition involved increasing time spent at Mansfield Primary School, initially supported by Thomas’ Mansfield Autism teacher and then increasingly spending more time and becoming more independent.

Principal of Mansfield Primary School Tom MacMunn said Thomas is fitting in well and is supported by staff, students and an assistant in the classroom.

“We are a very diverse and inclusive school, with many students having special needs and requiring additional support,” he said.

“The whole year level spent time understanding autism, in preparation for welcoming Thomas to school full time.

“It’s terrific that Thomas has been able to integrate so well.”

According to Ms Reeves: “Mansfield Autism is bursting at the seams and all of our programs are full with wait lists.

“Our $40m expansion at our farm will enable us to help more Victorian autistic children and their families.”

The expansion, dubbed Operation Gamechanger for the socio economic benefits it delivers, will be a Centre of Excellence Therapeutic Care Farm.

About $16m in external funding has been received and Mansfield Autism has contributed $10m, with construction on family cabins and student residences under way.

Successful transitions to school for young children living with autism is the focus of a program run

by Mansfield Autism, to improve the likelihood of children attending mainstream schools and not just coping but thriving in that environment.

Mansfield Autism chief executive Simone Reeves explained that the transition program focused on building the skills the children will need to succeed at a mainstream school.

“We know that early intervention for children with autism makes an enormous difference to their ability to integrate successfully,” she said.

“So we work with the families and increasingly with the schools in a collaborative way, to ensure everyone is on the same page.

“Our high ratios of staff to students in a very small class of six gives the students lots of focused attention and we teach strategies to assist with the academic and social demands of a mainstream classroom.”

Transition lead teacher Jack Finegan said the children are responding really well to the program.

“I’m optimistic that a number of children will transition successfully to their mainstream local school,” he said.

“We’re working intensively to support their social and emotional needs, while still providing some of the curriculum challenges they will

Local exercise leaders wanted MANSFIELD Adult Continuing Education (MACE) is looking for volunteer leaders for a successful and busy exercise program run across the shire.

The Weights and Strengths Program (WASP) is aimed at assisting our over-55 community members to get moving and make new social connections, and is being delivered in collaboration with Mansfield District Hospital.

not just physical activity benefits but also social interaction, with opportunity before and after class to catch up for a cuppa with your fellow participants.

MANSFIELD Garden Club’s March twilight meeting saw members revisit the Burrows’ garden at Merrijig.

The property has been sold, but the Burrows kindly let us wander though their beautiful garden and reminisce about the club’s most successful Open Garden Day ever held in 2018.

Enroute to the Burrows’ property members stopped at the Merrijig Hall to admire the garden, which was extensively upgraded using funds donated by the club from the 2018 Open Day. The evening finished with

dinner at the Hunt Club and members agreed it was a most enjoyable final twilight meeting for this year.

In April members boarded a bus for an autumn excursion to Yackandandah.

Jill Whitford welcomed us at her garden, ‘Magpie Rise’, and then escorted us to the Gequillana’s garden.

Both large gardens with orchards and vegetable beds gave members plenty of ideas to take home Lunch was at the Star Hotel where we thoroughly enjoyed listening to Chris and Lauren McGorlick talk about their business, ‘Happy Underground’.

They grow organic produce on a small allotment just out of Yackandandah and once a

week orders can be collected from the garden, or Chris and Lauren will deliver orders by bicycle.

This environmentally friendly business is very much in keeping with the philosophy of Yackandandah.

After lunch we were treated to a third lovely garden where we were invited to take cuttings.

There was certainly lots to chat about on the way home.

Meetings are now held at MACE at 7pm on the last Thursday of the month with a guest speaker.

New members are always welcome.

Keeping the home fires burning WHILE wood heating is still very much favourable in the High Country there are rules and regulations on collecting those winter firewood supplies.

Within the Mansfield Shire permits are required through council to collect domestic firewood from roadsides and state forests.

Permits through council can be obtained by going onto their website and applying online.

What does domestic use mean?

When we talk about domestic purposes we mean you can use it in your home, for example in a wood fire, a wood stove or a fire pit.

It’s illegal to sell firewood you collect from domestic firewood collection areas.

It’s also illegal to use it in a commercial business or enterprise.

So, what can I collect?  You can only collect trees or parts of trees that are already on the ground.

 Don’t cut down, break off or damage a standing tree or shrub, even if it’s dead.  Don’t collect trees that are clearly hollow or if more than half the tree is covered with moss or fungi. These trees are important for the life of the forest.

When you’re collecting firewood, it’s important that you:  Don’t take wood within 20m of any rivers, creeks, lakes or dams.  Protect native animals and plants, and respect cultural heritage sites.  Take any litter with you when you leave.

You can collect up to two cubic metres per person, per day.

You cannot collect more than 16 cubic metres per household per financial year (July to June).

A single cubic metre of split firewood will fit, neatly stacked to a height of 50cm (20 inches), into a trailer of

Some households in regional areas rely on firewood for winter energy - please consider others when deciding how much firewood to collect.

When collecting firewood in state forests:  Only drive your vehicle on formed roads or established tracks.  Don’t tow or winch fallen trees along the ground.

 Your vehicle and trailer combined must be less than 4.5 tonnes in weight. A combination of more than this weight can’t enter or be used in a domestic firewood collection area.  You can’t use heavy

machinery (including a bulldozer, crane, excavator, forwarder, hydraulic log splitter, saw bench, skidder, skid steer loader or tractor).

While collecting firewood from state forests, you should:  Only use equipment (including chainsaws) that you’re trained to operate.  Use well-maintained equipment.  Wear appropriate safety clothing.  Carry a first aid kit.  Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

You should avoid:  Collecting firewood when conditions are wet, windy or hot.  Working alone or with children.  Working under broken overhead branches, around dead standing trees, on slippery ground or near mine shafts.

MANAGING director of Euro Fireplaces, Christian Bergmoser, believes he has changed the way Australian homes are being heated throughout winter after introducing Euro Fireplaces.

Since commencing his business in Mansfield more than 10 years ago his sales and distribution have increased more than 10 fold.

Plant bulbs now before it’s too late

 CROWDS OF DAFFODILS: Your spring garden will be a picture of yellow blooms if planting daffodil bulbs now.

IT’S not too late to get those spring flowering bulbs into the gardens and pots.

Autumn is the time to ideally plant them giving them the colder months to germinate, sprout and ready for blooming in spring.

Daffodils, freesias, tulips, anemones and blue bells are all classed as spring flowering bulbs, but the best time to plant them is actually in autumn.

The hibernating bulbs will happily go into the cooler soil of autumn and winter and then sprout up to put on a great show in

spring before dying back and hiding beneath the ground again in the warmer months.

Great for cut flowers, they require little care and are pretty easy to grow.

If you live in the cool or temperate zones of Australia, such as the Mansfield district, bulbs will do well coming up year after year.

When to plant?

Even though bulbs start appearing in stores from March onwards, it really is not a good time to be planting.

If you are in a cool climate zone, plant in April or later.

Do they need special soil?

Bulbs do like a good free draining soil otherwise they tend to rot when they are in their dormant stage.

If your yard is all clay, try building up the soil in mounds or grow bulbs in terracotta or concrete pots.

Don’t use black plastic as the bulbs close to the edge will overheat and fail to flower.

They do love soil that has good organic matter so adding compost when you plant will make them happy.

FEEDBACK WANTED: The National Horse Traceability Working Group wants to hear from those in the horse industry.

Feedback wanted from horse industry THE National Horse Traceability Working Group (NHTWG) is seeking feedback regarding design and introduction of a traceability system for horses, donkeys and mules in Australia.

The NHTWG has agreed that the establishment of a base level traceability system as a starting point would best suit the needs of stakeholders and help ensure the industry can respond quickly to a biosecurity incident or emergency animal disease outbreak.

The NHTWG is proposing a National Horse Traceability System (NHTS) that utilises the existing framework and incorporates incremental improvements.

These include refreshing and maturing the PIC system managed by states and territories, introducing uniform national PIC business rules, enabling enforcement of PIC legislation and requiring base level movement information to be recorded by all sectors of the horse industry.

All sectors of the horse industry are invited to provide feedback on the proposed business rules.

The consultation period closes on Wednesday, May 25.

Virtual fences rein in deer VIRTUAL deer fencing is proving successful in a joint program to reduce the risk to motorists in Mansfield and the North East as part of a joint program between Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and Regional Roads Victoria (RRV).

The two new virtual fences, which have been installed along the Mount Buller Road, near Sawmill Settlement (as described in a previous Mansfield Courier article), are activated by car headlights to deter deer and other native wildlife from crossing roads at night.

“We know deer and other native wildlife can cause a significant risk to motorists, so we are pleased that this trial project is proving successful,” said David Pasztaleniec, FFMVic Hume planning manager - invasive species.

“The virtual fence is activated by car headlights, and the device emits an ultrasonic sound and flashes a blue light into the vegetation beside the road.

STAY AWAY: New roadside virtual fencing is reportedly working well so far.

“The audible and visual disturbance deters deer and other wildlife from crossing the road, which reduces the potential for collisions with vehicles.”

RRV regional director Hume Steve Bowmaker said: “Our number one priority is the safety of the community, so we are pleased that this project is being carried out in two

key locations where deer are known to frequent.

“The virtual fences run along a four kilometre stretch of both roads and were selected based on evidence from the community and stakeholders where deer are known to cross.

“Initial results show a decrease in reports of collisions between animals and vehicles at both locations.”

North East regional news in brief Search scaled back for missing man VICTORIA Police have wound back and shifted focus in their search for a 70-year-old man missing from Dinner Plain since May 13.

Hundreds of police and other emergency service crews have been searching for ‘Christos’ since he failed to return from a walk in the area surrounding the village.

Extreme weather saw the search numbers scaled back, with extra attention applied to an aerial search using drones and the police helicopter.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said more than 400 searchers have been involved since Christos went missing including members from the mounted branch, search and rescue, airwing and local members, as well as BSAR, Ambulance Victoria, Parks Victoria, SES, Resort and Ski Lift staff along with local volunteers.

“Police will continue to assess all possibilities while maintaining smallerscale searches, and should new information come to light the search will escalate accordingly,” the spokesperson said.

“We will continue to support and ensure ongoing welfare is provided to Christos’ family during this difficult time.”

Police are urging anyone who sights Christos or discovers any items or evidence that may support or assist them to call Triplezero (000), without delay.

Management said visitors to Mt Hotham would notice changes around the resort.

CROWD FUNDING: Brighter Days patrons helped raise $825,000 for charities.

Concern over too few police in region POLICE stations throughout the North East have been left to face ‘critical resource shortages’, with 51 positions between Wangaratta and Wodonga stations currently left unfilled.

Representatives from The Police Association Victoria (TPAV) visited the North East last week, when local officers expressed concerns over fatigue caused by a dearth of available staff in recent weeks.

A total of 10 police officers from across the state are set to be temporarily deployed between the two stations over the coming weeks,

however, TPAV secretary Wayne Gatt said police had been slow to respond to an issue which had threatened to boil over for months.

Some 500 additional police were provisioned under the most recent state budget, however, police high command are yet to confirm exactly how many will be allocated to bolster the North East response.

A WOMAN who reached speeds of almost 160kph on the Hume Freeway near Glenrowan has been side-lined for 12 months, after she was initially spotted travelling fast near Springhurst last year.

Wangaratta magistrate Anne Goldsbrough heard the defendant had been travelling to her Glenrowan workplace in the early hours of June 16, when police clocked her green Holden Commodore travelling at 159kph southbound along the Hume Freeway.

After initially spotting the defendant near Springhurst, a police divisional unit was established near the Snow Road off-ramp, with officers later intercepting the vehicle in the nearby McDonald’s carpark just before 5:20am.

Upon inspection, officers found the vehicle had not been registered in 2021.

Along with a compulsory 12 month licence suspension, Magistrate Goldsbrough also imposed fines of $1150, and ordered the defendant to complete driving programs before she regains her driver’s licence.

THE first Jamieson ‘Back Your Trailer’ competition was held at the Jamieson Rec Reserve on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.

A dozen competitors competed in the event, that certainly had the attending crowd on their feet cheering.

It was a formidable exercise as time and precision were of the upmost importance.

LAST Wednesday a special community ‘working bee’ was organised at the Jamieson Recreation Reserve.

It was following the congratulatory call from our local member for Indi Helen Haines upon the successful result in Jamieson Community Group winning the Commonwealth Volunteer Grant.

The community group have purchased new equipment to support our community working bee volunteers.

The Jamieson community group received $4570.70 and have purchased appropriate safety and maintenance equipment, petrol brush cutter, battery operated chainsaw, whipper snipper, blower, first aid kit, shovels and rakes.

The Jamieson community working bees are held weekly to maintain and improve our precious parklands and community areas, the Island Rec Reserves, Gerrans and Matthews Reserves, the Memorial Hall, Significant Trees and the Museum.

On Wednesday the community working bee volunteers put the new equipment to good use in a Rec Reserve clean up.

All this equipment is stored in a specially designed Jamieson community volunteers trailer, in a secure location.

Longmuir plays down hype over Dockers’ win FREMANTLE coach Justin Longmuir has attempted to play down the significance of the Dockers’ superb 38-point upset of reigning AFL premiers Melbourne.

The Dockers inflicted the first defeat upon the Demons since round 19 last year, booting the last 10 goals at the MCG on Saturday to end Melbourne’s 17-game winning streak.

After two disappointing losses against Gold Coast and Collingwood, Fremantle showed they

are the real deal by moving to 8-3 ahead of a heavyweight showdown with second-placed Brisbane next Sunday.

Longmuir slammed his players after losing to the Magpies last week, saying “everyone was getting way ahead of themselves”.

But the third-year coach was extremely measured when speaking out about one the greatest wins in Fremantle’s history.

“I’m just really proud of the players, clearly the last two weeks

have been really disappointing,” Longmuir said.

“Sometimes when that happens you can go insular and become individual but from the very start of the week it is about getting back to playing team footy before those two bad losses.

“It’s one game. I said it last week, you get ahead of yourself in this game and you get what you deserve.

“Melbourne were missing a couple tonight and got some inju-

ries early which were disruptive to them.

“It’s a long season if you ride the ups and downs.

“We’ll enjoy this win but not getting past next week.”

Winter tennis in glorious sunshine for local derby

By RHONDA CARPENTER IN glorious sunshine Mansfield Black hosted Mansfield Blue last Monday in ladies’ winter tennis.

In an engaging contest both opening sets were tight.

Black’s Anna Speirs and Jenny Bell secured their’s 8-6 over Blue’s Michelle Pigdon and Belinda Cipa.

Blue’s Clare Beecham and Sophie Yencken raced away to a 5-2 lead when their opponents, Rhonda Carpenter and Di Bergelin dug in, equalled at five all, and pushed them to the tiebreak. Blue steadied holding firm for a comfortable 7-2 tiebreak win.

The next sets were equally competitive with Anna and Rhonda taking their’s 8-4, and Belinda and Sophie winning 8-5.

Two sets each and only two games separating the teams going into the final pairings, the result would come down to the wire.

Jenny and Rhonda asserted their authority with an emphatic 8-0 win, then watched the other pairings tussle it out.

Michelle and Sophie won 8-4 for Blue in a high-quality contest.

Black and Blue shared the sets three all, but Black won, 40 games to 34.

There was plenty of food to share, including Blue’s bonus offerings.

Belinda had made a beautiful carrot cake to celebrate her last match before heading north.

Multiple conversations crossed the clubhouse table as teams sorted players for the following week and socialised.

Claire Sharp, Kate Campbell, Maureen Jewell and Wendy Maxwell won every set, 48 games to 15 and regained their top spot on the ladder.

Equally Euroa staked their claim with a convincing win over Mansfield Red winning 48 games to 12.

Both sides used five players with Euroa’s Chris Ellis, Sue Vaughan, Lyn Pierce, including Robyn Johnson and Mary Dewis into the line-up.

When Red needed to replace an

injured player, Mary Kelly kindly stepped in to help them out.

She combined with Karyn Fraser and the very determined pair took their set to a tiebreak in Red’s best result for the day.

A massive thanks go to the bye team Moglonemby, who helped out three other teams which was very much appreciated by everyone.

This season, to increase the number of women playing, teams can use five players in the home and away rounds, with two players

sharing the three sets.

Any replacement must be a financial member of a club and must become financial with EDLWTA after three matches.

In addition, the bye team can be a source of fill-ins, and some teams have extra players available.

Captains can help.

After the third round Benalla sit on top of the ladder on 26 points, then Euroa 21, Terip 17, Mansfield Blue 14, Mansfield Black 8, Moglonemby 4 and Mansfield Red 0.

Juniors footballers hit it out under lights

By MICHAEL BRETHERTON FRIDAY night saw the under 10s and 13s hit it out under lights for the second time this season on what was a clear but crisp evening.

With high quality skills on show, the scoreboard lit up much to the delight of the kids and kept ticking over with some terrific play from both junior levels.

Awards this week for the under 10s went to Cruz Heath and Ethan Lovick from the Eagles, Henry Chandler and Dylan Gibney-Schelfhout for the Demons and Bodhi Clifton and Sweeney West for the Hawks.

The progression of the kids continues to steamroll along, none more so than the girls representing the junior football club with a special shout out to Edie Gardner who

kicked her first ever goal on Friday night.

Special thanks to Mansfield Pizza for the under 10 awards.

For the under 13s, award winners for the Blues were Reeve Purday and Mitch Howe, the Eagles Issac Crowe and Sam Hough took out the awards while for the Cats, Harry Sheehan and Nick Hoskins were the award winners with a special mention to Jake West on

holding the backline together.

SUPERSTARS: Mansfield Eagles U11 squad team travelled to Kyabram for their last tournament; they played 8 fast and hard games only losing one game by a point.

FUTURE STARS: The eight week Net Set Go program recently commenced with over 30 eager and aspiring young netballers taking to the court every Wednesday.

Mansfield junior netball on a roll OVER the past four months there has been a hive of activity at the recreation reserve netball courts with Mansfield Junior Netball Club commencing their highly anticipated season.

In February we held our trials for our U11 and U13 representative squad teams and we were delighted with the number of players attending.

With some great talent being shown on the courts it proved a tough decision for our selectors Sharna Byrne and Michelle Kain.

Both representative teams have since participated in five tournaments with excellent results under the guidance of coaches/team managers Robyn Thornton/Ali Wilson (U11) and Mandy Kynnersley/ Mandy Snell (U13).

A big thank you to all involved and a massive congratulations to the U13 team who won the grand final and the U11 team who finished second (no finals for this age group) at their final tournament held in Kyabram on Sunday, May 29.

Our winter competition commenced at the end of April and had an incredible response with over 180 players registering, including one team travelling each week from Alexandra.

Each Friday night you can hear whistles blowing, laughter, cheering and if attending see plenty of smiling faces as 10 games of netball are played over the course of the evening.

So far five coaches have successfully completed the course and we have seven people participating in our Umpire Development Program which is amazing for the future of netball in Mansfield.

Finally, on behalf of the 224 players registered with MJNC I would like to acknowledge our umpires, coaches, team managers, committee members, first aid officers and canteen helpers that volunteer their time each week and do a terrific job.

Hopman Cup squash winners A TEAM from the North East did very well recently by winning Division 3 of the Victorian Country Squash Team Championships, otherwise known as the Hopman Cup. The Hopman Cup event is an annual, weekend squash tournament consisting of regional teams from all over Victoria.

Each team consists of three female adults, three male adults and junior boy and a junior girl.

There is no other tournament like it on the calendar.

A great weekend of team camaraderie and good squash to be played and watched.

This year’s team was Greg Murphy (Benalla), Chris McNair (Benalla), Brian Lyons (Yarrawonga), Xander Smith (Yarrawonga), Rochelle Shaw (Yarrawonga), Treena McNair (Benalla), Marion Baines (Wodonga) and Zara Shaw (Yarrawonga).

With Rochelle being Brian’s daughter and Zara being her daughter, there were three generations of the Lyons squash dynasty in attendance.

Husband and wife, Chris and Treena capped off the family feel for the team.

Bombers demoralise King Valley THE seniors took on King Valley on Saturday on a speccy day at serenity park.

With a solid team in once again the boys were keen to consolidate their ladder position and walked away with a solid 80 point victory.

While some wayward kicking impacted the scoreboard, the boys generated enough opportunities all day, which saw multiple goal scorers have an impact.

The midfield group was led by Beau Smith who brought his own ball, and Joel Sanford continues his fine season with plenty of silky entries into the forward half.

Al Bennett (4) and James Fox (3) were the main goal scorers, while the pressure of Will Goonan, James Law and JayJay Curtin made an impact.

Curtin was a standout

Reserves continue to improve THE Bombers’ young reserves side once again showed some great signs of improvement on Saturday.

With strong numbers once again, the boys had the opportunity to send three guys across to King Valley to ensure even numbers for both sides.

A welcome return was given to Jackson Sole who got plenty of it despite looking a little puffed pretty early.

Young Luke Berriman continued his fine season, while another young player James Reid had his best game for the year.

Continuing the youth theme was the inclusion of Will Smith for his first game at the club.

The young tall showed plenty in his first outing which gives the coach more options.

While the young fellas did well again, it was Andy Marshall who was rock solid in defence all day who grabbed the Doon Pub award on the day.

Sitting firmly in the ‘veteran’ category, the old boy just delivers each week and led from the front all day.

Archie Smith gave the mids first use all day in his second game back from injury, while Sam Bennett and Patty Revs did as they pleased in the forward half.

Similar to the senior side, the reserves face a big test next week against Benalla, and with the improvement we’ve seen all year anything is possible

in in probably pro robab bably his best game for the season, and was recognised with the Fan Favourite and Foodworks Coaches Cup awards.

Defensively the guys were on top all day, with Zac Tanner, Zak Bailey and Earl Ree-Goodings all showing good signs with ball in hand.

Next week the guys travel to take on flag favourites Benalla in what will be a terrific challenge for the group.

Missing players create opportunities for others and that provides the club with a great chance to test its depth, which will be a real positive in a close competition.

BEST ON: JayJay Curtin was a standout in probably his best game for the season, and was recognised with the Fan Favourite and Foodworks Coaches Cup awards.

BONNIE Doon A Grade started off with a strong first quarter coming out 20 to 3 with Anna and Casey working well down in defence end.

Portia had a tough game being double teamed, however, managed to use her height to her advantage while Mia made a huge presence into and outside of the ring.

We maintained our lead going into half time, 35 to 11.

Sarah fed passes well into the ring for the goalers while Shannon continued to drive strong and keep the ball moving.

Steph Evans made bringing the ball out of defence easy with her talk and strong leads.

Steph Ward come on in the second half with some tough opponents but fought well.

Good to get a decent win up our sleeve heading into the second half of the season.

IT was a foggy morning arriving at the Bonnie Doon courts ready to take on King Valley.

With no game for the under 15s the under 17s started the day for the netball.

We started off with Charlotte in GK, Erin in GD, Poppy in WD, Tara in C, Casey in WA, Chloe in GA and Grace in GS, this remained the same throughout the whole game with Demi and Emerson on the bench playing up from 15s.

The game started off with King Valley scoring the first couple of goals but the Bonnie girls kicked into gear moving the balls down our end.

Bonnie Doon won the quarter, 13-6.

The girls started the second quarter thriving with Erin, Poppy and Charlotte working hard in the defence end getting the ball turned over.

Tara and Casey were working the ball down the court with Grace and Chloe finishing it off nicely.

King Valley were struggling to score with Erin, Poppy and Charlotte’s constant pressure.

The girls finished the quarter with Bonnie Doon still strong 29-9.

Third courter began with Casey and Tara feeding the ball nicely into Grace and Chloe.

The Bombers continued to apply intense pressure in the defence with all the girls coming out on the centre passes forcing the opposition to throw the ball away.

The final score of the third quarter was 46-18.

The last quarter saw the girls begin to tire a bit, but continued to place pressure on King Valley.

Grace and Chloe were still thriving in the goal ring, while Tara, Casey and Poppy were working the ball down the court from Erin and Charlotte’s intercepts.

The match ended with the Bombers winning with a score of 61-24.

We are all looking forward to heading to Benalla to play the All Blacks next week.

We welcomed Charlotte Atherton, a rising star from under 17s, and Cass Turner, an absolute weapon from B Res. With an unexpectedly warm day, we went out hard from the start, with a few quick goals.

With intense pressure from the defensive end, Cass McCormick was showing her strength in the ring with multiple turnovers.

Allie Colyer and Jess Armstrong, AKA Soupie and Strong Arms, were able to convert the turnovers in the goal ring. The girls finished the first quarter with a roaring lead 19-5.

The Bomberettes continued the hard pressure into the second, with Jess Harris and Alicia Rowe proving to be a force to be reckoned with on the centre passes, moving the ball with ease into the goalies who were able to convert.

Cass Turner and Madi Hearmon continued to put pressure on the King Valley centre pass, forcing errors which were able to be converted.

The girls finished the second quarter up and about, ready to bring it home in the last half 36-11.

The third quarter saw the girls begin to tire in the sun, with King Valley being able to claw a few goals back. However, with strong pressure from Charlotte Atherton, the Bombers continued to apply the pressure in defence.

The final score in the third was 51-22.

The last quarter saw the girls fired up ready to take it home.

With continued energy that was seen all day, the girls came out with one final push.

With amazingly accurate goals from Soupie and Strong Arms, and unmatchable pressure from Cass Mac and Charlotte, the B grade girls were able to bring it home with a final score of 69-31.

The opposition may have been from King Valley, but the bombers were the “Kings” of the court.

While King Valley have had a tough season so far, the girls knew they couldn’t be complacent and had to continue to work hard and play their style of game, while taking the opportunity to try and boost their percentage as much as possible.

It was a chance to put into practice some new systems they had been working on at training, fine tune their game, and have some fun.

The first quarter saw us come out strong and claim that first goal.

The defenders, Narelle, Hannah and Cass, played

tight on their players and had some great turnovers.

The mid courters Ali and Amy worked the ball down the court well and fed into shooters, Chrissy and Michelle, who were very accurate with their shooting.

At the first break Doon were 22 goals in front.

The 2nd quarter, saw us continue to build on our lead, and not drop to King Valley’s level.

The transition out of defence was smooth, with good timing and strong leads.

The pressure on King Valley’s centre pass was amazing with many intercepts and turnovers.

There was also the occasional long bomb into the goalers, which luckily hit the target.

With a 35-goal lead

coming into the 3rd quarter, Michelle mixed it up, with fresh legs coming on.

Emma in only her 2nd game, had great defensive pressure, which resulted in a couple of great intercepts.

Poppy ran well in C and created good space, and Leith was reliable as ever, feeding into the ring.

Michelle continued to dominate in the ring with great holding and amazing accuracy.

The final quarter saw some more changes made and the girls were issued with the challenge to keep King Valley to a final score of under 20 goals.

The girls stepped up to the challenge and worked hard with their defensive pressure all down the court, created space, with good timing and leading into the space.

This allowed the goalers to continue to dominate with Michelle on fire with her goals.

At the final whistle, Doon had kept King Valley to two goals for the quarter, with King Valley only able to score 17 goals for the whole game.

Once again it was a team effort, with every single player contributing to the win.

Shout out to Maddie for all her encouragement from the side-lines.

As we come into the second half of the season, we will continue to build our momentum, with finals firmly on our minds.

Mountain biker Ruby gets the nod

RECOGNITION: Local mountain bike rider Ruby Dobson has been confirmed as one of the 88 athletes who have been categorised as Emerging and Developing athletes by AusCycling and will receive recognition by the AIS and receive support in her ongoing development.

MANSFIELD mountain bike rider Ruby Dobson has been confirmed as one of the 88 athletes who have been categorised as Emerging and Developing athletes by AusCycling in the disciplines of track endurance, track sprint, BMX racing, BMX freestyle and mountain bike XCO for 2022-23.

Athletes categorised as Emerging and Developing receive recognition by the AIS and receive support in their ongoing development in several formats, including access to state high-performance facilities and dedicated camps.

The key objective is to develop and prepare the athletes for a successful progression into the Australian Cycling Team’s Podium Potential, Podium Ready and Podium categories.

The categorisation framework comprises 44 Emerging and 44 Developing athletes from seven state and territory institutes and academies of sport.

Ruby comes in under the Emerging category in MTB XCO. Australian Cycling Team interim director of performance pathways Donna Rae-Szalinski is excited by the talent coming

through the network and congratulates all categorised athletes.

“We wish to congratulate and welcome the 88 Emerging and Developing athletes into the HighPerformance Network,” she said.

“It’s wonderful to see the increase in categorisations for disciplines like mountain bike XCO and BMX (racing and freestyle), it is a testament to the rich talent across Australia in so many disciplines of cycling.

“A thriving talent pool as the foundation of the Australian Cycling Team is vital in ensuring the team’s success moving forward.”

Mansfield Eagles defeat Imperials in close contest

By BRENDAN PIGDON MANSFIELD Eagles under 14s travelled to Wangaratta on Saturday morning to take on one of the competition leaders.

Conditions were perfect for football and both teams started off intensely.

Eddy Morphett, Ethan Pigdon and Astin Browning combined

with Jaxon McCormack to get the ball out of the middle quickly.

Hayden Desmond led the forward line with help from Chris Caminos and Harry Craddock and got the ball to star full forward Harry Yencken to get the score board ticking over.

Scores were level at quarter time, both sides on 13 points.

The second quarter was a torrid

affair with only three points scored for the quarter.

Liam Smith was in everything as usual as was Will Northcote and Hamish Yencken. The young Eagles managed to be in front at half time by three points.

After the main break, the boys came out pumped up and full of confidence and played hard football.

James Benton was moved into

the middle with great effect with plenty of help from Andy Friday and Noah Pigdon.

The Eagles kicked on to be 15 points up at three quarter time with scores Mansfield 5.7.37 to imperials 3.4.22.

The last quarter was as intense as the first three, with good passages of play from both sides.

Jaxon Day defended well as did

Tom Williams and Ben Baklis.

Tyler Polkinghorne was in everything finishing the game with a couple of majors.

Mansfield came out on top with the final score being 6.4.40 to 4.7.31.

Awards went to Jaxon Day - Mansfield Football Netball Club cap, Tyler Polkinghorne - O’Malley’s Pizza award, and Andy Friday - Ben Purday Bricklaying award.

Sheehan gets the Perks

By LAURIE HARCUS THIS week we saw lovely late autumn weather and then the onset of winter, only a few days away.

Sad but happy times.

Sad because we have so many of our members heading north for the warmer climes (understandably and enviably for many of us), the Grey Nomads depart, Mingo one of our favoured persons has already gone with Jill, definitely sad.

And happy because the winter solstice will be at 1913hrs on June 21, the least sunlight for the year.

Then an extra minute every day until December.

Happy days.

Tuesday was 4-person Ambrose off the gold tees.

Winners with a score of 53.78 (what that means, who knows, it is only its relativity that counts): Jarrod Heath (again), Josh Foots (good mate), Mic Davis (nice to see him back again) and Phil Conway (every golfer knows).

2nd with 54.25 was Alan Parrott, Tom Nichol, Bob Cullen (one of those grey nomads that I earlier mentioned with wife Lorraine heading north), and Taki (everyone’s mate).

3rd on 55.1 allegedly, the ‘A’ team: Dave Joyce (assistant GM and can play a bit), Greg Nugent (GM) putting guru today (not a lot else happening), Cooksey (most persons know this loveable course superintendent).

Interesting: the difference from first to third was 1.38; an amazingly small margin in a team game.

I’m glad that I wasn’t the one to miss a putt.

Thursday Stableford results: A Grade: 1st - Alan Parrott 38 pts; 2nd - John Koraus 36 pts; 3rd -

Rob Fankhauser 35 pts.

All players played off the same 13 handicap.

It was like a shootout really, would have loved it if they had played in the same group.

Alan has been playing so consistently for a long period (winning heaps) closely followed by John Koraus (morning crew) husband of Jenny another fine player.

Rob, my previous handicap pennant captain and good bloke is one of the lads going north with Robyn.

B Grade:1st - Col Whytcross 39 pts (h/c 25); 2nd - Charlie Heath 36 pts (h/c 19); 3rd - Peter Barnes 34 pts (h/c 17).

Col has been just doing it over the past weeks - well done Col. Charlie, second, a mate of all and board member of about eight years or more.

Peter Barnes another quiet achiever who tends to slide under the radar but can definitely ‘play a bit’.

Saturday Monthly Medal Stroke results: Medal sponsor is Midland Insurance; another very valued supporter.

Co-sponsor for the best ‘scratch’ score is John Perks, who sponsors every monthly medal.

All monthly winners compete for the ‘J.D. Perks’ perpetual trophy before the end of the year.

Dion is another lad who rarely turns in a poor game.

Nett 69 in less than average conditions is an outstanding result.

Dion has plied his sporting ability in many sports and is one of a family of high performing people.

I’m sure that he will be looking forward to the “medal of medals”.

No stranger to winning - an excellent nett 70 off a one handicap playing to zero.

Speaking of zero, this is the handicap now of Kyle Bridgeman, a goal that he has been chasing

for many months.

A bonus is that he now has the lowest handicap in the club.

I’m sure that this will be challenged by Rod in the foreseeable future.

Mark Bettany has had a large share of media recently and still performs to the highest standard,

now a senior in golfing terms and winner of seven championships, playing off 2 handicap makes him a young superstar in achievement in many players eyes.

Good on you Mark.

The scratch winner (J.D. Perks) is Rod Sargent for this month.

Brendan (Louie) Egan a member of a local distinguished horse racing family and father of ‘Billy’ a well renowned Jockey.

Well done again David, rarely a poor performance.

No wonder you won the ‘A’ grade ‘high country challenge’.

Last Sunday was also the first day of the men’s ‘Reardon’ trophy.

The top four players in monthly medal result for the months March - April compete in this match play elimination event.

The players vying for next Sunday’s final are Alex Scherini v Chris Kerr and Mark Jones v Kyle Bridgeman.

The first match went to Alex Scherini with a couple of holes to go against young Chris; a hero of our winning handicap pennant team.

The second match between two ‘Titans and Gladiators’ of our sport was a spectacle for the spectating group following.

The ebbs and flows that occurred in both matches are a special feature of match play, were simply fascinating.

Honours went to Kyle over his fellow all conquering scratch pennant team mate and friend Mark.

We are waiting with delighted anticipation for next week’s final between Alex and Kyle.

Under 17s’ big win in Wang

BIG WINNERS: The Eagles U17s on their sponsor run with Fraser Stevenson outside Sportfirst.

SATURDAY we travelled over to take on the Wang Imperials for our first game in three weeks due to byes and a COVID cancellation.

The boys were very keen for a good hit out and the chance to stretch their legs and put into place what we had been training for.

The message was to take it a quarter at a time and start strong and fast from the first bounce and boy did they do just that.

They hit every contest with force and when the ball spilled free they took control of it and ran the Imps off their feet.

Quarter by quarter they reset and started from the first bounce and continued to perform better and better as the game went on and we came home 96 point winners, the fast and clean ball movement was amazing to watch and with a run of good games coming I believe we are in for something special at the Under 17 Eagles in the next few months.

To watch this group grow into a tight knit group and show that on the footy field by working for each other and protecting each other is something special to be a part of.

Skinner the winner, again

THIS week saw the final of the ladies’ Bill Reardon Memorial Championship being played between the semifinalists, Glenis Skinner and Millie Cumming.

This event is a highly sought after board event run in memory of long-term member of the club, Bill Reardon.

The final is played over 27 holes and for those who know Millie, even in her slightly more senior years,

she is still a tough competitor to beat.

But Glenis is in great form at the moment, as many will have noted how often her name has been mentioned in recent reports, and it was she who came out the victor after a hard fought 24 holes, winning 5/3.

Congratulations to both ladies for reaching the finals, and to Glenis for more great golf and getting her name up on the board.

Earlier in the week Tuesday’s nine hole stableford

Finally, on Saturday, it was the Ladies Monthly Medal, sponsored by Sanae’s.

Sam Bailey appears to have been playing on a different course to the rest, as she was the clear winner with a lovely nett 70, eight shots clear of the next best, runner up, Sue Crow with nett 78.

Third was Marion Sargeant with 77.

Well done Sam, you’ve been pipped many times before, but not this time.

Chris Sullivan got the

day and of B Grade was Jackie Smithwick with nett 73.

A grade was claimed by Linda Brook with 74.

B Grade runner up was Marion Sargeant with 76 and 3rd Lorraine Cullen 77, while A Grade runner up was Sheryl Sargent 78, on a countback to 3rd place Andrea Marsden.

Nearest the pins went to Shelly Comerford (3rd), Marion Mitchell (10th), Glenis Skinner (16th) and Kylie Egan (18th), while Millie Cumming won the putting.

Glenis must be in the market for a lot of new golf gear with how many points her golfing account is accumulating from winnings.

Runner up was Kerri Nicol on a countback - well done to Kerri who is relatively new to golf. Good to see Robyn Baker back out there taking 3rd with 16 points.

Wednesday was a stroke round played by a good field of 28 and the winner on the

nearest the pin on the 16th.

A contingent of girls also went to Strathbogie last week to play in their Bowl.

It was threatening to be a complete washout but in fact the rain held off until the last couple of holes and the course was beautiful to play as always.

No winners to report for Mansfield, however, but everyone enjoyed the hospitality.

This week is the Tarrawingee Bowl which we are sending two teams to.

Marathon draws strong turn-out SUNDAY, May 29 was the inaugural Mansfield Marathon events run by the newly formed Mansfield Athletics Club.

There were over 200 entries across the four events which included a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10 kilometre run as well as a five kilometre.

Simon Bevege from Albury took out the Men’s Team Canavan Ray White Marathon in a cracking time of 2:29, and Julie-Anne Undril won the women’s in a time of 3:01.

Local doctor Melissa Moyes came in third which was a great effort.

Xavier Meade and Cara Foot both from Melbourne took the wins in the Proactive Tax Half-Marathon.

It was great to see many locals take this on as a major goal.

Ryan Claxton from Wangaratta was the fastest male and Emma Harley was the fastest female in the Delatite Hotel 10km event.

We had lots of locals in the Mansfield Sportsfirst 5km event, including the whole female podium which was Estelle O’Neill (first), Adele Leon (second) and Alison Howie (third), while Thomas Ryan from Shepparton finished first in the men’s 5km just ahead of local Charlie Watts with another local Davron Eddy coming in third.

Event director Liam Delany was very pleased with how the event went and is already looking to make next year’s event bigger and better.

“Mansfield Athletics would like to thank all the volunteers and the sponsors as without them we can’t run events like this,” said Mr Delany.

“The event has raised thousands of dollars for the Mansfield Athletics Club and the rail trail, and hopefully inspired more people to join in the club training for their next goal event.”

OFF AND RUNNING: The Men’s Team Canavan Ray White Marathon got off to a flying start on Sunday.

LOCAL LADIES: It was an all local lineup on the podium for Mansfield Sportsfirst 5km event, with Alison Howie placing third, Estelle O’Neill securing first and Adele Leon taking out second.

O&M kicked an impressive 18.11 (119) to GV’s 9.10 (64) to take the win and retain the Ash-Wilson trophy in a match that felt closer than the scoreboard showed.

O&M’s midfielder Joe Richards from Wangaratta was awarded best on ground, with co-star Leigh Williams bagging five majors up forward.

GVL side, as did backline boss Jack Hutchins, whose return home to the Eagles’ side this year has been most welcome.

GVL came out strong in the opening stanza, putting the first score on the board.

But O&M countered, booting four straight to carry the edge at the first change.

It was much of the same in the second, until the GVL clawed its way back into

contention, trailing by just 20 points at the turn.

A quick goal in the third saw GVL hopes reignited, but the O&M train rolled on, too strong for too long, and a blowout fourth term sealed the deal on a 55 point win.

Mansfield’s Brett Mahoney was bestowed the honour of captaining the GVL side and said that although things didn’t go as well as they wanted, it was a great test and a closer tussle for the bulk of the game than the final scores showed.

“I think we had our turns

of momentum and had our chances,” said Mahoney.

“We just probably didn’t make the most of opportunities going forward, maybe lacked a bit of potency.

“I would have thought they’re the number one country footy league, so it’s always good to test yourselves against them to see where you’re at as players and a league.

“Having the Mansfield boys playing was awesome.

“Jack (Hutchins) did his usual thing and played really well down back, he was really strong in defence.

“Patty (Marks) did well

down there too; he was meant to be on the wing but got thrown back and did a really good job.

“It’s just a good experience to expose you to a higher level, representing not only the league but Mansfield as well.

“The Eagles have started our season well, so this helps to build that confidence and hopefully spurs on a few of the younger kids to play interleague in the next couple of years.

It was the O&M and GV’S first meeting for five years, and much welcomed said O&M coach Damian Sexton.

“It was great to have interleague back,” said Sexton.

“There’s a bit of pressure on to get everything together, the work for it all probably started 12 weeks ago.

“The league’s professionalism is as good as you get but it was just good to put it all together and come out with the result that we did.

“You definitely feel a bit of fulfilment from it.”
