Let it snow, let it snow

AFTER one of the best winters in almost two decades last year, encouraging snowfalls throughout autumn have done nothing but build optimism for another bumper ski season.

Whether another record setting season happens we’ll obviously have to wait and see but more immediately signs for the first weekend of the season look positive with snow a chance to be on the ground.

Before the 2018 winter even officially launches a new $4 million accommodation facility at Howman’s Gap, not far from Falls Creek, will open its doors for the first time.

The new centre will allow even people with disabilities to experience the snow.

In terms of skiing and snowboarding at Falls Creek, those enjoying the slopes can expect less of a wait and a faster commute via the Eagle chairlift this winter, after a $9 million upgrade over summer.

Youngsters learning to ski at the resort will also have even more fun with the Snowsports School again linking up with children’s entertainment company Nickelodeon.

Over at Mt Hotham there’s a new bus service catering for the resort and Dinner Plain.

Alpine Spirit Coaches has been running people up and down the hill for years via their Snowball Express service but this season they’ll operate all buses on the mountain.

With a modern, spacious and wheelchair-accessible fleet, locals and guests will be able to ride in more comfort and even hail a bus at anytime, from anywhere.

Glamping is also new at Mt Hotham with Alpine Nature Experience offering a unique overnight stay in the snow.

Both Falls Creek and Mt Hotham have seen plenty of change in their food and beverage offering.

Iconic restaurants, Maggie’s and Dicky Knees have new operators as do Cloud 9 and Frying Pan. Maggie’s will now be an Asian fusion café and Dicky Knees will be serving Mexican cuisine, while Cloud 9 is now an upmarket bistro and Frying Pan a barbecue shack and brewery.

A cocktail bar and lounge and casual eatery called Miss Mary’s is new to Mt Hotham along with Frankie, a small dining space with big offerings upstairs at Big D. They’re just some of the things you can expect to experience at both resorts this winter.

New centre to help more people experience snow

THE first fully accessible snow line accommodation will be launched at the Alpine Centre at Howman’s Gap on June 8.

A $4 million state-of-the-art facility will allow people with disabilities to experience the snow and participate in on-snow activities at Falls Creek, just a few kilometres up the road.

The development has been delivered by Disabled Wintersport Australia in partnership with Victorian YMCA and is being officially opened

by Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria, Dannielle Green.

With a membership base of well over 1000 people, DWA runs winter sports program for participants from all over Australia.

Along with providing greater opportunities for people with a disability, the centre will also become a high-performance training facility for Australia’s Winter Paralympic Games athletes.

SNUG ON SNOW LINE: The $4m Alpine Centre at Howman’s Gap. DWA national program manager Andrew Lee said the centre creates a fantastic opportunity for many Australians who would otherwise be unable to access the snow.

“We now have a dedicated facility above the snow line which means we can now offer the same opportunity to people with disabilities that the average person gets to have,” he said.

“The snow in general is something that gives people a sense of freedom so it’s great that we can now give more people the chance to experience the snow and the joys that come with it.

This centre has 36 beds and will provide greater access and affordability to more than 1000 members.

Mr Lee said that the purpose-built facility had taken absolutely everything into account.

“We have got functioning bathrooms which allow someone up to quadriplegic to be able to shower and change comfortably with the help of a carer, while bedrooms cater for all possible needs,” he said.

“We have wheelchair charging points and even the kitchen cupboards are designed with the intention of being functional for people with disabilities.

“Every single element of the facility is designed to make it easier for our clients and to provide them with a memorable snow experience.”

Welcome snow falls as autumn departs and winter hits

By JUSTIN JENVEY WINTER is here and what an end to autumn it was with more snow falling on the last three days of May. Adding to the excitement of the upcoming winter was temperatures dropping to as low as minus four, enough to see snow guns turned on to pump out the first mountainmade snow of the season.

At the time the Mt Hotham Falls Creek News went to print, there was no more natural snowfall predicted before opening weekend but snow guns were expected to be working in over drive.

Snow at the end of May was the fifth pre-winter falls this year after the first dusting came in late March.

Snow also came again in mid-April and there was a third

covering in the first week of May. At the time, locals said it was the first time in almost a decade that it had snowed three times, with still four weeks left until the season officially began.

A huge dump on May 10-11 not only blanketed both Mt Hotham and Falls Creek but settled at much lower altitudes at the foot of both resorts, in Harrietville and Mt Beauty.

While the snow didn’t last long in either town it remained at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek for a number of days after 2030cm was measured during the cold snap.

When snow arrived last week, Mt Hotham Ski Company’s Glen Watson said winter had arrived.

“Cold temperatures have allowed for snowmaking machines to blast around the clock adding to the natural snow cover,” he said.

“Further snowmaking sessions are likely in the

mornings the week before the snow season begins.”

And here’s fingers crossed that there’ll be enough snow for people to hit the slopes on the first day of the 2018 season.

WHAT a month it’s been at our resorts.

We’ve had some of the best snow in years with more than 100cm arriving in the first week of August courtesy of what people called the Blizzard of Oz. That was followed up by another 60cm just a week and a half later boosting the snow base at both Mt Hotham and Falls Creek to about 160cm.

That’s plenty of snow to see out the final month of the season.

While the skiing and snowboarding has been ideal parliamentarian Bill Tilley has concerns about the po-

lice presence at the resorts.

The member for Benambra has called on Police Minister Lisa Neville to undertake a “comprehensive review” of police numbers at alpine ski resorts.

It comes after police had to travel from more than two hours away to respond to an incident at Falls Creek in late July.

In this edition we preview the 2017 Kangaroo Hoppet which is shaping up to be the most competitive in a number of years.

At the pointy end of both the elite men’s and women’s fields is a number of skiers capable of taking out the Aus-

tralian leg of the Worldloppet series.

Australia’s best hopes are Mt Beauty’s Phil Bellingham and Barbara Jezersek, who will be skiing under the Australian flag for the first time.

Earlier this month we saw the Australian Biathlon Championships take place and the sport’s major body in this country is eyeing an international event in the future.

The Whiskey Flat biathlon range at Mt Hotham was recently upgraded to International Biathlon Union standards and also extended by three lanes.

The improvements were part of a $150,000 project made possible with

the help of the Victorian Government’s Shooting Sports Facilities fund.

August has also been a month of fundraising at Mt Hotham with events held to support the Cancer Council and the resort’s ski patrol.

Also in this edition we find out about a collaboration between a popular Falls Creek venue and a top UK restaurant.

Astra Lodge welcomed Toby Burrowes to its kitchen for three weeks with the Elystan Street chef injecting some a new twist to the menu.

We caught up with Burrowes and Astra Lodge owner Rosy Seaton to find out about the experience.

Just like any festive season THERE’S plenty on offer at Mt Hotham to celebrate the start of the 2018 season with food taking a starring role.

Chill Bar and Café is celebrating with three nights of live music, featuring DJ Barkly on Friday afternoon and Angus Legg on Saturday and Sunday from 4.30pm.

On Saturday, One Tree Sports will showcase the latest snow fashion and ski gear to go with complimentary champagne on arrival to be followed by fireworks in the Basin at 7pm.

The Last Run Bar is open for dinner all weekend or why not try some Asian-inspired tapas with signature cocktails and live music at the new kid on the block, Miss Mary’s.

On Sunday afternoon Zirky’s will put on bubbles and cheese from 1.30pm, before great live music from Imogen Price.

That’s in addition to The Recreation pop-up which will see the team from the Fitzroy North venue join the Zirknitzer family to create two nights of memorable dishes The ticketed dinner will also be complemented by Gapsted wines.

The Recreation head chef Steven Nelson has a planned three course menu with a subtle nod to Peter Zirknitzer’s family origins with each one to be paired with a different Gapsted wine.

At Dinner Plain, Onsen Spa are offering a complimentary hand and arm massage while you sip on a glass of wine for their opening night.

They’re also offering a one-night only special, offers including discounted seasonal membership.

Still at Dinner Plain and there’ll be the usual start-of-season bargains at local ski retailers ahead of the Giant Snow Dance Festival on Sunday.

DJ Eddy will be pumping tunes for you to dance to on the Dinner Plain roundabout from 5pm with fireworks at 6pm, hot chocolates, gluhwein and strudel also available.

School partners with Nickelodeon again FALLS Creek’s award-winning children’s Snowsports School will reveal an exciting new look this season in collaboration with leading children’s entertainment brand, Nickelodeon.

Nickelodeon will take over the theming and design of Falls Creek’s children’s Snowsports School across the sixteen week season.

The resort’s popular kids’ snowsports programs provide professional tuition for children aged 3-17 years, allowing them to practice and progress their skiing or snowboarding talents on a variety of beginner terrain.

The number one preschool brand, PAW Patrol, will theme up Snowclub for 3-5 year olds with pup-tastic PAW Patrol bibs for young ones this year.

The ‘Junior Workshop’ (612 years) will be SpongeBob SquarePants themed, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will theme up ‘Ride Tribe’, a reenergised program for teenagers (13-17 years).

The décor inside the snow school area will also be updated to feature a range of Nickelodeon characters in various areas of the school.

Falls Creek Ski Lifts general manager Sharon Raguse said teaming up with Nickelodeon for the second year in a row was exciting.

“We’re thrilled that Nickelodeon, the powerhouse of children’s entertainment, has chosen to join us in this brand collaboration which will create some lasting memories for families at Falls Creek,” she said.

In addition to working with Falls Creek throughout the 2018 season, Nickelodeon will also offer a week of exclusive onmountain family experiences at the resort during the July school holidays - running from July 2-9.

The partnership between the two entertainment brands will see popular PAW Patrol pups – Chase, Marshall and Skye – join families on the slopes during the school holidays in an interactive activation.

The school holiday activity week will include a PAW Patrol Snowzone with free, family friendly activities, PAW Patrol character appearances and PAW Patrol and SpongeBob SquarePants indoor movie nights.

New bus operator for resort

BY TATE SPITERI A NEW village bus service will provide a much improved experience and greater safety for guests and on-mountain staff at Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain this winter.

Alpine Spirit Coaches will bring the resort’s buses in line with modern metropolitan standards after taking on the service from the Mt Hotham Resort Management Board.

With the introduction of a modern, spacious and wheelchair-accessible fleet, Mt Hotham will be the only resort to offer a service capable of catering for wheelchairs.

Alpine Spirit Coaches owner Chris Bonacci said his company will operate six low floor buses in the Hotham vil-

lage and two high class coaches from Dinner Plain.

In a major boost for tourists the Hotham buses will operate with an Uber-style operative system thanks to GPS technology.

Guests will be able to track the buses from their devices allowing them to wait in the comfort of their lodgings or a restaurant until the bus arrives.

“People can register as a bus user and that also allows them to hail a bus through our webpage,” Mr Bonacci said.

“They can order a bus after hours so in the low peak times during the day or in the late times at say 8pm to 1.45am.

“It’s demand responsive transport, if there’s a group of people at Hotham Tourist Lounge they can book a bus

and we can pick them up within a 15 minute period, if not less.”

Dinner Plain transport will also go up a notch with the implementation of a smart card travel system, similar to that of Myki.

The new fleet will be managed by a Mountain Transport Operations Manager based at Mt Hotham, allowing the service to dynamically respond to demand.

For guests not only will all buses be easier to board, additional heating will also ensure a much more comfortable journey.

Mt Hotham Resort Management Board CEO John Hutchins said they were committed to providing an amazing alpine experience.

“We strongly believe the provision

of a village bus service in winter is central to the guest experience of the resort,” he said.

“Mt Hotham remains unique in offering this service to guests at no extra cost above resort entry fees.”

In taking on the on-mountain service Alpine Spirit have integrated their Snowball Express service to form an organised bus route all the way from Melbourne to Dinner Plain and everywhere in-between.

“We can actually link all our services together so anyone travelling can do it all with us and we can manage their dealings pretty smoothly,” Mr Bonacci said.

The additional service will see a massive increase in staff for Alpine Spirit set to rise to 36 from 21 by the time winter is in full swing.

IMPROVED: Falls Creek’s Eagle chair was upgraded over summer and will now be able to carry more people than ever before.

New Eagle express takes flight

SKIERS and snowboarders at Falls Creek can expect less of a wait and a faster commute via the Eagle chairlift this winter, after a $9 million upgrade over summer.

A brand new Leitner-Poma designed chairlift will replace the original Eagle chair, located in the Village Bowl precinct.

Previously a triple chair, an upgrade to quad chair will increase capacity to 2400 skiers per hour covering a distance of 5.1 metres per second and is anticipated to eliminate some congestion in Slalom Plaza.

The new chair also comes

equipped with automatic self-locking safety bars for enhanced security.

The operation to replace the chair began in November and continued over summer with helicopters being used for most of the heavy lifting.

As planned the upgrade was completed in time for the opening weekend of the season.

As Victoria’s largest Alpine resort, Falls Creek Ski Lifts general manager Sharon Raguse said the investment demonstrated a commitment to the local community and

the wider ski fraternity.

Some of the original Eagle chair seats were auctioned off at a fundraising event at the end of the 2017 season with proceeds being donated to the Falls Creek Museum.

Other old seats have been converted to benches for around the village and public art within the resort.

The original Eagle chair was installed in 1979 and is now one of 14 lifts at Falls Creek.

The resort has also invested $1 million towards a Park Pro grooming machine, the only one of its kind in Australia.

Changes aplenty for Falls dining

By IAN TALBOT NEW dining experiences will be aplenty at Falls Creek this season with new operators taking over some of the mountain’s most popular venues.

Snonuts Pty Ltd has been awarded two of the resort’s iconic restaurants, Maggie’s located adjacent to the foot of Towers Chairlift, and Dicky Knees located in the Ruined Castle area.

Meanwhile Traverse Alpine Group, the company behind the award-winning Astra Lodge, has taken over popular dining spots Cloud 9 and Frying Pan. Snonuts directors Debbie Howie and Janette Lawson, who originally brought Snonuts Street Kitchen and Kiosk to Slalom Plaza said they’re thrilled to be taking on their two new venues.

“We are so excited, both restaurants have huge potential and we’re going to bring wonderful offerings to guests and staff,” Lawson said.

“We will transform Maggie’s into an Asian fusion café serving Laksas, Ramens, Indian Curries, Japanese style offerings plus specials and a wide range of quick, easy takeaway options.

“Dicky Knees will be a Mexican taqueria serving burritos, quesadillas, nachos, tacos with margaritas, Mexican beer and a selection of wines.”

There will also be tasty snacks and easy to eat meals offered at Dicky Knees while the menu will also incorporate their famous Snonuts donuts.

In addition to that Howie said music will be a key theme bringing life to the newly renovated venues.

“Guests are our number one focus,” she said.

“We have employed experienced staff who will bring our magic alive.

“We believe guests will be really pleased with the new Maggie’s and Dicky Knees, two venues that play an important role in providing

healthy, affordable dining in Sun Valley.”

After overhauls to Cloud 9 and Frying Pan the two have been converted to an upmarket bistro and a barbecue and brewery respectively.

At Cloud 9 skiers will be able to order wood fired pizzas and grab a coffee or hot chocolate without having to endure long queues thanks to new food and beverage stations.

As a barbecue restaurant and brewery Frying Pan will offer a

range of beef and lamb dishes over a wood fired grill and some of the best craft beer from the region’s brewers.

The menu at Frying Pan will also change daily so mountain staff and holidaymakers will never be eating the same thing.

Also the team behind Easy Eats have transformed Gateway into the new Brewhouse and will also have a new snack shack set up in Slalom Plaza.

And while the venue hasn’t un-

dergone significant change the kitchen team at the ambient and topshelf Elk Restaurant is a mostly new one.

Miss Mary’s owner Tom Buckley said it had been a

busy couple of months transforming the venue but they were thrilled to be opening for the start of the season.

“We’ve done a few renovations and added a few fixtures to give it a similar feel to what we have at Dr Mauve,” he said.

“Hotham’s probably got more of a pub atmosphere so what we’re offering will be something different in terms of a casual bar and eats.”

Restructure sees new members appointed MEMBERS have taken up their posts on the new board of directors for Falls Creek and Mt Hotham Alpine Resorts.

The boards were restructured as part of the Victorian Government’s Alpine Resort Governance Reform project, which aims to facilitate collaboration and enable a sector wide strategic approach to infrastructure investment.

The new boards include three members who are unique to each mountain and another four members who will also serve commonly on the Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller/Mt Stirling boards.

Maxine Morand (chair), Andrew Skewes (deputy chair) and Anthea Packer make up the Mt Hotham unique trio,

while at Falls Creek the members are Jo Shannon (chair), Lindy Allen (deputy chair) and Jason Alexander.

Remaining members common to all alpine resorts’ boards are Michelle Croughan, Susan Lebish, Helen Moran and Peter Valerio. Mt Hotham’s board members have a broad range of skills and experience that will contribute to improving the re-

sort’s alpine planning, risk management, destination marketing, stakeholder engagement, public land management, and all levels of government.

Mt Hotham Alpine Resort Management Board chief executive officer, John Hutchins, said the new board would be able to help grow the resort.

“We are now able to focus on initiatives such as our

‘Growing Mount Hotham’ project, which will boost green season activities and improve the amenity of the Mount Hotham Village area,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Falls Creek board has pledged to improve its environmental sustainability going forward along with progressing its targets for improved resources use, and working towards complying

with obligations under the Climate Change Act 2017.

Board chair Jo Shannon said she was committed to taking an open and collaborative approach to deliver sustainable outcomes for all stakeholders.

The Alpine resorts contributed some $911 million to the Victorian economy and created more than 9000 jobs in 2016/17.

$26m Davenport central development to boost Hotham’s appeal A $26 million development earmarked to begin at Mt Hotham at season’s end is set to open up the resort for greater year-round use.

Davenport Central will replace and dramatically expand the ageing Asgaard Ski Lodge which was built by a group of University of Melbourne students 42 year’s ago.

Located only a couple of hundred metres from the General Store and Big D, the 7200 square metre six-level building will span two blocks of land, Asgaard and Tantani.

It will include restaurants and bars, conference facilities, ski hire, potential supermarket and accommodation for mountain staff, tourists and lodge members.

The development was announced in March by Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria, Danielle Green, and will be undertaken by Mider a Melbourne based group.

It will be a joint venture with Davenport Central Pty Ltd representing Asgaard Ski Club Inc. Davenport Central director Ron Mason said Asaard Ski Lodge members made the decision eight years ago, to replace the 40 bed building in need of repair with an extended and

commercialised development.

“This is the biggest development on the mountain in 20 years,” Mr Mason said.

“It will change the face of the mountain, consistent with the Mt Hotham Board of Management master plan.”

The accommodation will consist of six two-bedroom

apartments plus four 125 square metre luxury penthouses which are expected to sell for in excess of $800,000 each.

Asgaard Ski Club will have 11 apartments for club members plus additional staff accommodation quarters will be available for up to 80 mountain staff.

A feature of the development will be four dedicated all-access apartments which will cater for disabled visitors, who are a key target in expanding the visitor market over both winter and summer.

Access will be made easy too with 80 undercover car parks allowing guests

to drive straight in from the Great Alpine Road and virtually to their front door.

“We are determined to provide the best access for special needs groups to allow them to utilise the High Country in both white and green seasons,” Mider owner Anton Wilson said.

The project required a 75 year government lease for the Crown land site, as well as the highest bushfire rating.

Work will begin in October and will be done in between snow seasons, with completion expected in May 2020.

Mr Wilson said around 80 jobs will be created during the construction phase.

In the meantime developers will be looking at all areas of the resort’s growing tourist trade to maximise potential for their investment.

Property is also being sold off the plan by Zirky’s Real Estate agent Rob Ford.

The 2018 snow season is off to a flying start at Falls Creek with the opening of the new $9 million Eagle Express quad chairlift.

Replacing the old triple chair in the Village Bowl, the new Eagle Express will get skiers and boarders from the Village Bowl to the top of the mountain in around 3 minutes.

This fully detachable quad chair, with its self-locking safety bars for enhanced security, is the first of its kind in Australia since 2008.

The Eagle Express will make reaching the back side of Falls Creek’s terrain faster and more comfortable, and will reinvigorate the Village Bowl area. It will also aid in ensuring congestion is kept to a minimum in Slalom Plaza, as Falls Creek are also launching a transport solution at the top of the hill to take beginners from Eagle Express to the snowsports school at Cloud 9. Utilising a Sherpa snow mobile and 6 seater trailer, a whole ski or snowboard lesson can be taken across to the renowned Snowsports School.

Other exciting news out of Falls Creek this season is they are once again partnering with Nickelodeon to inject more fun into the kids’ snowsports school. PAW Patrol, SpongeBob Square Pants and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will take over the kids’ snowsports programs and the PAW Patrol puppies will be in resort during the July School holidays to bring the action to life.

The food and beverage offering has also been reinvigorated at Falls Creek with The Travers Alpine Group taking over the lease of The Frying Pan Inn and Cloud 9. Both venues have undergone significant renovations over the summer and will bring fresh flavours and feels to the resort.

Worldloppet champion coming to Australia’s Nordic ski capital FALLS Creek is Australia’s home of cross country (XC) skiing, with a landscape and terrain that rivals the best in the world.

At peak season there is over 65km of groomed trails and they are being used more than ever before after trail fees were scrapped in 2011, resulting in huge growth in Nordic sports at Falls Creek.

MOUNTAIN FRESH: Blizzard Brewing’s Mark Hubbard is delivering beer to two popular Mt Hotham venues.

AUSTRALIA’S highest brewery has collaborated with Mt Hotham pubs High Plains Hotel and The General.

Dinner Plain’s, Blizzard Brewing is providing the two venues with its own special beer to be served on tap.

Blizzard Brewing owner Mark Hubbard said the co-branded beers were brewed specific to what each pub wanted.

“They have been handcrafted

by Blizzard and are called High Plains Draught and Genny Draught and will basically be a house beer for each venue,” he said.

“The two venues are really supporting us in trying to introduce their clients to craft beer and in doing so we’ve tried to make a beer that will be enjoyed by their customers.”

Hubbard said it wasn’t the first collaboration he has done having provided Feathertop Winery in Porepunkah with a house beer to sell through their cellar door and to wine club members.

He’s also in the process of

making a barrel-aged beer utilising red wine, wine barrels.

“It’s a pale ale which is fermenting on shiraz skins, so it will take on the characteristics of the wine and will be a beer we offer over winter,” he said.

Another new creation, Blizzard’s ‘Who’s Ross Trevor Wet Hop Ale’, made from fresh hops from the Rostrevor hop gardens in Ovens, recently received a bronze medal at the Australian International Beer Awards.

Having been operating for a little over two years now, Hubbard said Blizzard Brewing continued to grow.

“We’ve brewed about 16 different beers in our first two years and we’re getting some good brand recognition and customer recognition,” he said.

“We’re growing at about 25 per cent per annum which is faster than the industry as a whole.”

Blizzard Brewing will be open seven days a week during the ski season with fortnightly live music for après-ski as well as hosting their popular barbecues and other regular events.

Commission to be awarded next month THE artist who will create a ‘gateway’ piece for Falls Creek is set to be announced in late July.

A curatorial panel has narrowed its shortlist to three candidates after more than 80 artists requested the brief.

The successful applicant will develop their ideas for the proposed $300,000 public artwork to welcome visitors to the all seasons resort.

It is part of Falls Creek Resort Management’s vision to be a leader in highaltitude public arts and culture.

Submissions closed on May 11 and were assessed by an expert panel comprising Professor Marie Sierra, Deputy Dean of Arts and Design at the University of New South Wales, Dr Chris McAuliffe, Australian Catholic University College of Arts and Social Sciences, and Bryony Nainby, Benalla Art Gallery director.

Arts and Culture Committee member Lindy Allen said the three finalists were all exceptional talents. “The three panel members independently yet unanimously shortlisted these three proposals,� she said. “The finalists have addressed all the criteria and proposals have been developed with a strong sense of place and con-

nection to Falls Creek. “Any one of these finalists will provide an exceptional piece of artwork of international standing, long-term cultural significance, a valuable asset with high potential public appeal that will attract visitors and bring new visitors.�

Priority themes for the commission include raising broad awareness and appreciation for Victoria’s unique alpine environment and creative development around alpinespecific concepts.

The artwork will complement the commanding presence of the alpine peaks visible in the area, and is expected to successfully make a considerable impact.

To further the ambitions of the recently adopted Arts and Culture Policy for Falls Creek, the resort is supporting cultural events including artist camps, exhibitions, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and film festivals.

Two years ago, Falls Creek launched a summer artist-in-residence program which has seen many well-known artists creating new work in the area.

The Falls Creek Museum is also open to the public and showcases the resort’s 70 plus years of activity.

Iconic walk progresses to next stage A FUNDING allocation of $2 million in this year’s state budget will be used to further develop the business case, feasibility studies, and determine and design requirements of the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing.

The crossing has been designed as a five-day, fournight hiking experience that traverses the Great Dividing Range, from Falls Creek to Mt Hotham.

It is one of four walks in the Walk Victoria’s Icons portfolio, that also includes the Great Ocean Walk, the Grampians Peaks Trail and the Coastal Wilderness Walk.

In mid-April Parks Victoria released the final master plan for the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing following a two-year,

three stage stakeholder consultation process.

It was developed in partnership with Tourism North East, Regional Development Victoria, Visit Victoria and the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources.

The detailed plan outlines the proposed development of the area to create a worldclass alpine walking experience that captures the essence of the Australian Alps – the solitude, the seasons, the breathtaking beauty and the stories of Victoria’s High Country.

The 57-kilometre trek will connect people to Victoria’s most outstanding landscapes, wildlife and culture, expanding and developing the exist-

ing 37-kilometre trail.

The masterplan includes updates and improvements to existing trails, new and environmentally friendly hiker camps, low-impact huts tailored for walkers who prefer a roof over their head, educational experiences through guided tours and interpretive signage and world-class trail infrastructure constructed with environmentally sustainable materials.

The Falls Creek and Mt Hotham Alpine Resort Management Boards anticipate that the crossing will create an experience that complements and enhances visitors’ experience of the alpine region, particularly for people who are not already familiar with the area.
