“The response from the Minister for Police noted that response times will vary depending on a range of factors, including the proximity of police and the distance they need to travel,” she said.
Lastly, a further $450,000 is being sought for a sales yard biosecurity truck wash to help protect the region’s agricultural industry.
“Towns like Euroa experience regular brown outs, and the lack of energy security is the single significant barriers to attracting new small to medium businesses to Strathbogie Shire,” Dr Haines said. “We need $5 million to develop a largescale micro-grid for Euroa, to increase energy security and reduce reliance on an instable grid that relies on fossil fuels.”

“But public response times are a key reporting measure for other emergency agencies, including ambulance and fire services, and should be required of Victoria Police.”
A NEW Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) set to come into effect tomorrow will simplify decision-making for households and provide a more accurate appraisal of conditions in the local area. The refined four-tier system will replace the six-tier warning system previously visible along roadsides and online through the CFA website from SeptemberNew1. ratings of moderate, high, extreme and catastrophic fire danger are designed to create a clearer approach to managing fire danger and risk, with clear and concise instructions for each escalation, such as:

“This much needed facility will be available 24/7 and uniquely located to draw from a broader region to support agribusiness to thrive and prosper.”
“Having a third La Niña in a row, it is likely that we will have a very similar fire season, likely to be dominated by grass and crop fires rather than forests.
“We went from the existing two fire danger models for forest and grassfires to eight across the state - but not all of them are applicable to Victoria.
“Our analysis has found that evidence of illegal drug use is present in around 31 per cent of all road fatalities, so we welcome the police associationMscall.”Maxwell also backed calls to mandate response time reporting within the police force, more than a decade after the initiative was recommended by former Victoria Police deputy commissioner Bob Falconer.
“Violet Town continues to suffer from poor NBN and telephone services.” $1.5 million in Commonwealth funding has been sought for the creation of a nature based playground at the Sevens Creek.
“The Parliamentary Budget Office undertook a couple of costing analyses for us in relation to drug-testing, including the training of all police to carry out testing and assessing the prevalence of illegal drug use in road fatalities,” she“Tosaid.intercept and penalise a drug driver - if not at a roadblock - police need to call in Highway Patrol to administer a drug test and physically see the offender driving.
“Our saleyard committee and users understand that hygiene and sanitation play a critical role in the prevention of spreading of disease,” Dr Haines said. “Biosecurity of our agriculture industry has never been more important, particularly in a post COVID environment.
“The standard of mobile telephone and digital connectivity/capacity remains poor across much of Strathbogie Shire,” Dr Haines said.“Slow speeds, dropouts, congestion at peak usage times and no mobile signal are causing dissatisfaction and disparity.
“At the very least, we want this legal loophole closed so that police can respond more quickly to intercept a potentially dangerous driver.
• Extreme - take action now to protect life and property; and
“The new national system is truly national, so as people move across the borders between the jurisdictions they will see the same signs with the same categories and hear the same messaging of what the actions the communities need to undertake are, and that will help quite significantly.”MrSlijepcevic said CFA officials would utilise a four indices system which would dictate a township’s fire danger rating, taking into account the probability of a fire staring, its potential behaviour, the chance of the fire being suppressed in specific conditions and then modelling potential damage a blaze could cause.Hesaid climatological data accumulated during the upcoming fire season could be used to lead a review of existing fire weather districts ahead of the 2023/24 summer.“This year we are running with the existing fire weather districts but we’ll do the reanalysis of the climatological data sets and it’s likely to change so we might group things based more on local government areas (LGAs) that are more similar in their climatological data sets,” he“Assaid.we develop the system it will become even more sophisticated - the public displays (of fire danger ratings) will not change but we will have a more sophisticated decision-making engine behind it.”
“The North East and Gippsland forests are pretty saturated which from the fire perspective is a good position to be in, especially when we’re going through a significant change like this one.”For more information about fire danger ratings, visit ings.ratings/about-fire-danger-rat-restrictions/total-fiwww.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-https://re-bans-and-
“There are always differences based on the fuel type and the weather - if we’re in the Mallee, we will use the Mallee fire behaviour model, if we’re in the hinterlands we can use the hinterlands model.
“Following extensive community engagement, a township-based streetscape renewal plans have been developed to provide a visual guide for future streetscape development which can be implemented progressively.” $450,000 has also been requested for the creation of a mountain bike facility at Balmattum Hill, a key element in the shire’s Council Plan since “Strathbogie2014.Shire and the Euroa community have undertaken considerable work over the past 6 years to develop the concept of a mountain bike trail at Balmattum Hill,” Dr Haines said. “We are seeking funding for the development of detailed planning activities which will allow Strathbogie Shire and the Euroa community to conduct the necessary investigations, detailed planning to bring the concept to an infrastructure investment ready stage.”
“It demonstrates a smart use of a valuable resource while taking pressure off our potable water supply and our waterways heavily relied upon by farm dams and groundwater bores.”Asreliable power infrastructure remains a major issue in the region, Dr Haines also called on the federal government to back the Strathbogie Shire’s push for a microgrid to increase energy security and reduce emissions.
MP Tania Maxwell backs calls to expand drug swab pgpcapabilities Testing times for police

Equitable digital and telecommunications infrastructure has been requested for the region, with the aim being to eliminate black spots across the shire.
WANGARATTA-based state MP Tania Maxwell has thrown her support behind calls for all police patrol vehicles to carry drug-testing equipment. A 59-priority list issued by The Police Association Victoria (TPAV) last week pushed the importance of expanding testing capabilities among the police force, with drug-test kits currently only carried by Highway Patrol members and uniform officers conducting roadside testing.
• Catastrophic - for your survival, leave bushfire risk areas. CFA state deputy chief officer Alen Slijepcevic said the new nation-wide system would unify key safety messaging and could provide a detailed synopsis of anticipated fire behaviour tailored to regions within a fire district.“Agencies provide information on fuel hazards across the landscape and terrain and the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) inputs their modelling on what the weather will be like over the next one to seven days,” he said.
“As we’re going through the replacement we’ll be making sure they are in appropriate locations and it is reasonably safe for volunteers to change those signswe’ll progressively replace them based on the fire danger periods,” Mr Slijepcevic said.
“This community supported project will offer improved liveability and help strengthen Euroa and our Shire’s reputation as a destination,” Dr Haines said. “Increasing economic development with an estimated linger time of between 20 to 60 minutes provides local cafes and businesses with greater visitation and tourism expenditure.”DrHaines has proposed that the new Government provide $650,000 in streetscape works for Euroa, Violet Town, and Strathbogie.“Effective streetscape design is an integral part of shaping a community’s identity, increasing civic pride and improving a sense of well-being and belonging,” she said.
Ms Maxwell said closing the legal loophole around drug driving had been the first agenda item discussed with new Minister for Police Anthony Carbines, after initial discussions in 2019 with former minister Lisa Neville.
Cr David Andrews said it’s a solid document and is covers issues of the area. “It’s been well put forward and I support that,” he said.

COMMUNITY PLAN PRAISED: Avenel’s Community Plan was acknowledged in a recent council meeting after being put forward following community consultation.
A NEW report into porkbarrelling by governments to win votes in key electorates has recommended that ministers should not be involved in choosing which applicants are successful with grants. The independent think tank Grattan Institute report shows that of 19,000 grants allocated by the former federal Coalition government under 11 grant programs between 2017 and 2021, $1.9 billion went to Coalition seats, but only $530 million to Labor seats. Across a sample of programs in the three biggest states, government seats got more than $1 million on average, compared to just over $300,000 on average for oppositionIndiseats.Independent MP Helen Haines said the report exposes just how rife the toxic practice of pork barrelling has become in Australian politics. “While it may have a quirky name, pork barrelling is spending taxpayer money to further political interests and it must stop,” Dr Haines said. “It means public money is not being spent where it is most needed - that means it is being“Actionwasted.must be taken to ensure pork barrelling does not continue.“This includes action to ensure grants programs are competitive, merit-based and transparent.”TheGrattan Institute report titled ‘New politics: Preventing pork-barrelling’ cites the ‘sports rorts’ scandal where the minister went against the advice of the department to award grants. It notes that, “A high degree of ministerial discretion is a consistent feature of grant programs where pork-barrelling“Thereoccurs”.are many recent examples of federal and state programs where ministers have disregarded advice and over-ruled their departments to award funding for what appears to be political reasons.”

By GUS RIDDER AVENEL has put their 20222026 Community Plan forward to council, earning plaudits for the hard work put into it. As a part of the community planning process, Community Planning Reference Groups (Action Groups) undertake community consultation to come together and identify priorities for their community and create a four-year plan. In line with the funding conditions of Council’s Community Planning Program Guidelines, all Action Groups must have a current plan, noted by Council to be eligible to receive funding.
The Avenel Community Plan 2022-2026 was developed through an engagement and consultation process with the Avenel community undertaken from December 2021 to March 2022, led by Avenel Active Incorporated.AvenelActive was incorporated in January 2021 and is the successor organisation to the Avenel Action Group, which developed the previous 2018-2022 Avenel Community Plan. Their purpose is to advance the social and public welfare of the township of Avenel and its people by providing services and activities that encourage improved health, wellbeing and social cohesion, advocating and contributing to better amenities, and protecting and caring for the natural environment.
“In attempting to justify this intervention, the responsible minister tabled vague reasons, followed by eight pages of blacked-out documents.,” the Grattan Institute report notes. Dr Haines said moving forward if a minister makes a funding decision that is contrary to departmental advice that decision should be tabled in “Theparliament.new anti-corruption commission must also have the power to look at public spending in grants programs,” she said. greater transparency with federal grant gpygpgspending
The report notes that in the $1.4 billion Building Better Regions Fund, a ministerial panel chose 49 grant recipients that were not recommended by the department.
Avenel Active foster and support community development through collaboration with other organisations in town and local authorities, and at the time of developing their plan they had more than 60 members, comprising of residents and representatives of community organisations andCouncilbusinesses.acknowledged the significant contribution of Avenel Active and their work developing the plan, while also taking note of the plan itself and publishing it to council’s website.CrPaul Murray said there has been a great deal of work done by the Avenel community.

LOCAL residents are being urged to plan routes around known swooping hotspots, as native territorial birds approach their breeding season in the coming weeks. According to Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) senior wildlife projects officer Therese Davis, 10 per cent of native birds such as magpies and masked lapwings would often swoop humans and animals during a six to eight week period before their young left the nest. “Swooping can catch us by surprise, but it is normal behaviour for some territorial birds,” she “Swoopingsaid.is basically a scare tactic to warn people and animals not to come near their nesting youngbirds may swoop people or animals, so be mindful of your dogs “However, too. not all birds swoop to protect their eggs and young during the breeding season, so don’t be concerned simply because there are magpies or other common swooping birds in the area.”Amap of known swooping hotspots has been released in recent years, allowing residents to report incidents and advise others of areas to avoid. If travelling through a swooping hotpot, residents are urged to move quickly without running, and cover the head with a hat, helmet or Itumbrella.isillegal to harass or harm native birds and other native wildlife without authorisation.Tofileaswooping report, visit swooping-birds.gov.au/managing-wildlife/https://www.wildlife.vic.

THE State Labor Government is taking urgent action to protect the platypus, funding research to better understand the much-loved but mysterious native species. Minister for environment and climate action Lily D’Ambrosio today announced that the nation’s biggest platypus survey has found the vulnerable monotreme in new waterways. The government invested $300,000 to the support the Odonata Foundation and 500 local citizen scientists to collect water samples across the state to test and see if platypus were present.
Traditional Owners, school and community groups, scientists and other Victorians sampled a total of 1800 sites, finding that platypus are present in places where they have not been sighted for a long time, but also that they are absent in some areas we expected them to “Thanksbe. to the many hundreds of Victorians who took part in the nation’s biggest platypus survey,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. “You’re an important part of our work to study the mysterious monotreme and safeguard its future.
The ‘Protecting Our Precious Platys’ project will determine how threats like climate change, water availability and quality, riverbank condition and foxes and other predators can affect platypusPreviouslypopulations.collected monitoring data will also help researchers understand habitat suitability and identify priority locations for habitat restoration, predator control, and translocation opportunities for platypus.

The State Government has invested nearly $3.8 million to support 22 iconic species over the last five years - and has seen successful results for species like the Australian Fairy Tern, Baw Baw Frog and Brush-tailed Wallaby. Contributions have also been made to the targets of Biodiversity 2037, the landmark strategy to halt the decline of Victoria’s plants and animals.Thegovernment is taking urgent steps to protect the platypus, officially a threatened species and listed as vulnerable in Victoria in 2021, with $300,000 of funding for restoration works at key habitat and the creation of a long-term action plan. Since 2014, the Government has invested more than $560 million towards protecting biodiversity and the natural environment.

“All Victoria’s native wildlife is precious - our record investment in protecting the state’s unique biodiversity is supporting critical research and habitat protection so they can thrive, not just survive.”Platypuses have been a regular fixture of the Seven Creeks water system, although spotting them has become rarer in recent times.Euroa resident Richard Kearney has recently started seeing the native animal again at Seven Creeks, after previously being concerned about their dwindling numbers.“Just the other day I saw some Platypus again out by the creeks,” he said. “I’ve been telling council and Goulburn Murray Water more needs to be done to look after them and protect theThecreek.”State Government is investing a further $100,000 to support scientists to better protect the platypus in the wild - with the Icon Species grant supporting the Arthur Rylah Institute to create a heat map of areas where platypus face the greatest potential threats so managers can target interventions at the highest priority locations.

THE State Government will provide free university and specialist training for thousands of nurses and midwives under a $270 million boost to the health Announcingsystem.the investment yesterday, Premier Daniel Andrews said more than 17,000 nurses and midwives will be recruited and trained as part of a massive hiring and upskilling initiative - building an army of home-grown health workers to care for Victorians.
Euroa, VIC, 3666
Mr Andrews said more than 10,000 students will have the cost of their nursing or midwifery undergraduate studies paid for, while scholarships will be available for thousands more who complete postgraduate studies in areas of need including intensive care, cancer care, paediatrics and nurse practitioner specialities.
HEALTH BOOST: Premier Daniel Andrews says a $270m health care package announced yesterday will help recruit more nurses and midwives.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
IT is great news that Strathbogie Shire has become the 100th council in Australia and NZ to declare a climate emergency and is now planning to tackle the issue locally. Councils and local people have been at the forefront of recognising the danger we face from a couple of degrees or more of warming.Whilethe shire will not be flooded by rising seas, there are other extreme weather events predicted that are already affecting inland areas: more bushfires, worse droughts, more flood events, and heat. The latter is a killer of more people even than such disasters as bushfires. Elaine Hopper, Blackburn Show and shine has great benefits for region
All new domestic students enrolling in a professionalentry nursing or midwifery course in 2023 and 2024 will receive a scholarship of up to $16,500 to cover course costs. Students will receive $9000 while they study and the remaining $7500 if they work in Victorian public health services for two years. Mr Andrews said more midwives will join the workforce through an expanded postgraduate midwifery incentive program, which will provide scholarships to cover course costs and salary support for 150 existing nurses to continue working while they complete their specialist studies in midwifery.

Contrary to the stated opinions of all other councilors quoted in the article, Cr Dickinson said, relating to the Euroa Show and Shine, “I was wondering when do you stop sponsorship”. “I note that they have been getting sponsorship for 19 years. “The aim for these types of events is to become self-sufficient; don’t you think that 19 years is sufficient time to become self-sufficient?”Thisisdisappointing.Firstly,CrDickenson, the period of sponsorship has been 16 years, commencing in 2004. It was not sponsored during 2020 and 2021.More importantly though, is that Cr Dickinson’s focus on the expenditure of a relatively modest amount of $3000 for sponsorship fails to consider the return which the Euroa Show and Shine delivers to the Strathbogie Shire and its community.Ifweneed to consider a monetary value, then a statement in The Euroa Gazette in 2019 by then Mayor, Cr Amanda McClaren said, “The Australian National Show and Shine has become one of Australia’s most popular car events, attracting about 8000 people to the beautiful Seven Creeks Park in Euroa and injecting about $800,000 directly into the local“Theeconomy”.eventprovides significant benefits to the town and region boosting the local economy, supporting local businesses and trade and exposing visitors from far and wide to the town.” An investment of just $3000 results in a return of some $800,000, back in 2019. That’s a ROI of over 260 to 1. Not a bad result in the current economic climate!Ican’t understand why Cr Dickinson would want to dismantle this very lucrative partnership. Ray Read, Shepparton

“One of the perspectives that I want to make sure is on the table is the real need to increase the supply of housing - that creates an additional challenge, where we’ve got an acute shortage in both rental housing and houses to “Webuy. need to have some clever ideas to increase the amount of housing stock that’s available and not just the same old - we need to have a variety, a diversity of housing stock. “So some medium-density housing, the opportunity for additional social housing needs to be there as well so we need a broader mix of housing.”
“In our patch we have real challenges in the agricultural workforce, rural health workforce - well in every sector really - hospitality, teaching, childcare, aged care,” she said.

By RYAN MALCOLM INDEPENDENT Indi MP Helen Haines will seek to address three key deficiencies which have hamstrung the local workforce in recent times, as she represents rural Australia at the upcoming federal jobs and skills summit. She will join leaders in business, union and community sectors at the Canberra summit, which was a major election promise of incumbent Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, which is set to investigate a host of factors contributing to widespread skill shortages throughout the country. With housing deficiencies exacerbated by substantial regionalisation throughout the last two years, Dr Haines said it was important to investigate sustainable solutions to keeping skilled workers in the North East.

COMMUNITY HOUSE PROMISE: Annabelle Cleeland has announced the Nationals will secure the future of community and neighbourhood houses if elected this November. Ms Cleeland (left) is pictured with Nagambie Lakes Community House coordinator Anna Close during a recent visit.
THE Nationals have pledged to secure the future of neighbourhood houses across the Euroa electorate if elected to government. The Nationals candidate for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland last week announced a commitment to increase funding for neighbourhood houses should The Nationals be elected to government in November.Thecommitment comes after Neighbourhood Houses Victoria (NHV) advised that it will be forced to close or reduce services at 27 of Victoria’s 401 neighbourhood houses and reduce 154,000 hours across the remaining centres if permanent funding is not secured. Ms Cleeland said The Nationals would not let those cuts to neighbourhood houses “Neighbourhoodoccur. houses across our region do terrific work and they need to plan their future with certainty,” Ms Cleeland said. “We will not sit by and watch them close, leaving communities without vital programs that help regional families in the face of skyrocketing living costs.” Ms Cleeland said the announcement provided much needed certainty for the delivery of crucial communitybased“Neighbourhoodservices. houses provide a range of important services to their local communities, including childcare, maternal child health, libraries, seniors’ groups, wellbeing activities, foodbanks, government services, and much more,” Ms CleelandOnsaid.Friday Ms Cleeland spent the day at Nagambie Lakes Community House at a farming women’s morning tea, one of 19 groups who use the Community House. “Nagambie Lakes Community House is a great example of a community house that has benefited from The Nationals advocacy to secure funding and will have a strong future if The Nationals return to government,” Ms Cleeland“Withoutsaid.a change of government neighbourhood houses across the state are threatened at a time when so many Victorians are turning to their invaluable services. “This is a wonderful announcement and yet another example of The Nationals’ dedication to regional Victorians.”Nagambie Lakes Community House Coordinator Anna Close welcomed the support from The Nationals and their focus on health and wellbeing.“The tagline of the Nagambie Lakes Community House is ‘sharing friendship, knowledge and skills’ and although that is a great summary of who we are, it merely scratches the surface,” Ms Close“Withsaid.16 different groups meeting regularly at the house and an increasing number of events, workshops, accredited courses being offered, this truly is a hub in the Nagambie community.

“There’s never one solution to these things, we need to come at it from multiple perspectives.
Other matters set to be put forward by Dr Haines include improving opportunities to train and educate local workers, while the nation’s skilled migration program will also come under the spotlight.

Agriculture Victoria executive director, policy and programs, Sarah-Jane McCormack, said the program ensures regional and rural shows come back stronger than ever. “For the past two years, most of the state’s agricultural shows have been significantly impacted by COVID-19 and these grants help organisers return to pre-pandemic attendance and revenue,” she said. “Free entry for kids makes it easier for families to come along and see firsthand best onfarm practices and to immerse themselves in learning experiences to better understand agriculture.”Thegrants are open to all eligible Victorian Agricultural and Pastoral Societies that are hosting up and coming agriculture, horticultural or pastoral events including the Euroa Agricultural Society Show in October this year.
The audience also heard from Euroa Secondary College VCAL students who had created a community library for use at the school. There has been a focus on reading across the school’s curriculum recently, with the Art Room adopting the ‘Eyes Wide Open’ theme through surrealism.BookTastings were also held at the Black Cat Café (in the school library).

It’s a day to honour our dads, to reflect on what it means to be a father, and acknowledge the important role fathers of all kinds have in the lives of their children. But how did Father’s Day first start and how has it changed over the years? These days, Father’s Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday of September, although this has not always been the case. The modern Father’s Day as we know it began in the USA in 1908.That same year, the newly established Mother’s Day was gaining popularity, and others thought fathers deserved the same bymotherJacksonandraisedonemen.ofcampaigningSonoraacknowledgement.SmartDoddbeganforthecreationadaytoequallyhonourSonoraSmartDoddwasofsixchildrenwhowerebytheirsinglefatherCivilWarveteran,WilliamSmart,afterherdiedinchildbirth.Havingbeenlovinglyraisedherfather,shewantedmen to be equally acknowledged for their parental love and affection.Sonora Smart Dodd’s first Father’s Day event was held on June 19, 1910 at the YMCA in her hometown of Spokane, Washington with church services and celebrations. Father’s Day was surprisingly slow to take off and it was not popularly observed for many years. It wasn’t until 1966 that US President Lyndon B. Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day and issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers.Official recognition of the day was slow to come, and most Australians didn’t even know it was an event for several decades. The earliest celebrations of Father’s Day in Australia were held in June alongside the newly established American holiday.Asin the USA, Fathers were honoured at church services. It took the work of Ms Janet Heyden, who was also the driving force behind Mother’s Day in Australia, for dads in Australia to have their chance at being showered with small gifts as a token of affection from wives and children. Beginning in 1925, Ms Heyden organised the donation, collection, and delivery of small gifts to elderly men alone in hospital or retirement homes to begin the tradition of giving gifts on Father’s Day. It may have taken several decades, but Dads around Australia can be grateful that they finally get to put their feet up and enjoy an appropriately pampering Father’s Day. Father’s Day traditions in Australia look a little different to those around the world. The true joy of Father’s Day is in spending the day with family, receiving a handmade card, and having the perfect excuse to do as little as possible.Games of cricket, a day at the beach, tinkering in the shed, a camping trip and a day of fishing are all popular ways to spend Father’s Day in Australia.Beingthe first Sunday of spring, Father’s Day regularly involves outdoor activities,

The morning was led by Community Development Officer Nicole Wells from Nathalia Cobram Numurkah Health (NCN) who coordinated the breakfast and went onto to explain how the purpose of the activity was to show appreciation for the many women active in the farming community as well as provide them with an opportunity to take a break from their many responsibilities and jobs at home.
“We are also in the planning stages of delivering Mental Health First Aid training. All of the activities, events and training opportunities are fully funded by the project.

“It provides farming women with a friendly meeting place as well as a safe space to ask for support if they need it.”
“Over the next year or so, we will be delivering activities, events and training, including pop-up community engagement stalls in various places across the Moira and Strathbogie Shires,” Ms Wells said. “So far, we have been and will continue to run farming women’s morning teas and dinner events for the whole community, and we are on the lookout for farming men who would like to host barbecues on their farms.“Often, the different activities will have a guest speaker and/or farmer health professional in attendance, so that receiving support is made easier for those needing it.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR: John and I visited his eldest daughter and granddaughter at Logan’s Beach at Warrnambool on August 13. We were able to see a mother Southern Right Whale and her calf off shore and it was a real sight to see. We then took a quick look at Port Fairy and its blowy seaside scenes. The quick trip showed me spring was just around the corner. The wattles, daffodils, blossoms, magnolias and lovely tree lined streets at Camperdown, Colac, Terang and Warrnambool really caught my eye. Towns with such pride and beautifully kept public parks and streets and highway verges.Wecame back via Geelong and saw his third daughter there. Well this week spring is finally here for another year. It is enough to lift ones spirits isn’t it seeing the new leaves on the trees and plants and new green grass grow? Now I have had my cataracts done I can see and appreciate nature at its best once again.Let’s hope we can enjoy some spring weather too? We had two long time friends down from Queensland last week and were able to take them to see Mitchelton, Tahbilk winery, and our district and had meals at the Rowing Club.
Many women in the farming community often need to show support towards their partners, but often forget to seek support for themselves and their families. Some are in the position that they are trying to manage farms themselves and need help but don’t know where to ask for it. Often they don’t ask their family, neighbours, or friends. These Farming Women’s activities and the support such programs can help women and men who are finding it hard and struggling in the situation they find themselves. Ms Wells could see that those who attended the morning all got something positive out of the“Itsession.waswonderful to arrange the event in Nagambie,” she said.“We would love to get back there and do another one very soon.”

Harold met Roma at a dance in 1957. They built their home at 135 Anderson Street East and moved in after they were married in 1959. We all know how Harold would say “I have lived in the same house, with the same woman, for 62 years”. Roma was Harold’s love. She looked after him all their married life. We know he appreciated her, and because of her care, he happily remained at home until his last month. After their marriage in 1959, five children quickly followed from 1961 to 1968. The golden rule of tree felling and where to stand during said felling, Harold said was “follow the dog.” The dog always jumped on the back of the truck and there was no way Harold would damage his precious truck!In1961, Harold and Roma became founding members of the Bonnie Doon Aquatic Club where he served as commodore and a committee member several times over theHaroldyears. enjoyed giving speeches.Attheannual general meeting he enjoyed his ongoing role of MC and he was given a life membership in 2004.Heenjoyed water skiing, with his slalom skiing absolutely flawless on glassy water.Healso enjoyed showing off!It was nothing for him to be seen barefoot skiing, toe in the rope or backwards. GOLF STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB By ROB BROWNLEE IT almost felt like Spring on Saturday, August 27 when 28 players took on the course playing stableford. Our numbers improved as we had many visitors from Euroa Golf Club join us, they went away with most of the balls. The best round of the day was won by Debbie Cox winning with thirty four points, her prize was a dinner sponsored by the Euroa Hotel. Deb was heard to say she was off to the pub.Men’s winner also from Euroa was Dale Mc Intosh with 33 points, he kept his form going as last week he holed out at Mooroopna.Lineballs where won by Ken Wright now from Devonport with 32 points, John Moore 32 points, Allan Rowarth 31 points, Phil Rafferty 26 points, and Robin Lied from Euroa 25 points. Nearest the pins: 4th Gary Richie Euroa, 8th Dale McIntosh Euroa, 15th Chris Bennett, 17th Sarah Bullen Euroa. Mens drive and pitch Club. NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB ROUND two of three rounds of the Nagambie golf club 2022 championships was completed on Sunday with the course holding up against all the rain throughout the winter and even firming up after some sunshine late in the week. It was moving day in the championship with the pretenders moving out of the way and the contenders moving into position to pounce.Michael Sloan claimed his second win in a month to position himself within striking distance for this year’s club champion honours.Sloanrecorded a 74-3-71 to win the day’s event by three shots. Runner up went to David Fullager with a 96-22-74 , Fullager was the lucky one of five golfers all finishing on net 74, the others in count back order were Shaun Bryant, Barry Cryer, Jeremy Ezard and Michael Mensfeld, an illustrious list if there ever was one. The championship standings after two rounds are Jeremy Ezard leads Micheal Sloan by six for the club champion title, A grade net Michael Sloan 149 leads Shaun Bryant and Shane McCormick both 151, B grade net David Love 155 leads Gary Bow 158 and C grade proving once again to be where all the excitement is Michael Mensfeld and Rhys Shepherd share the lead on 157 with Alan Anderson next best with 159. The nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Sloan finding the hard to hit third, Jeff Mills creating a high level of conjecture in the clubhouse stating nine iron was used to claim the 13th, and Michael Mensfeld showing why he is leading C grade with a crisp hit on the 16th. Next week’s golf will be the final championship round a monthly medal will also be on offer, office duty is D Brown and in the bar J Lodding.

TENNIS By RHONDA CARPENTER and KARYN FRASER MANSFIELD Blue and Terip were evenly matched for their contest last Monday. Windy conditions made playTerip’sunpleasant.Frances Lawrence and Bec Lyttle began strongly with an eight-two win, while Blue’s Sophie Yencken and Sarah Mae countered with an eight-two win of their own. After the second sets going one each way, scores showed Blue up by one game. The final pairings would be pivotal. Blue’s Michelle Pigdon and Sophie took theirs eight-five but Bec and Jenny Martin took theirs eight-two.Setswere shared three all and Terip had secured the win by merely two games. It was a fine performance by the local side against a top fourTeripteam.three-35 defeated Mansfield Blue three-33. Mansfield Red was hosting Moglonemby in the battle for the wooden spoon, so hopes were high in the Red camp until the players arrived. It was Moglonemby’s reinforced team of Judy Sands, Mary Kelly, Lyn Johnstone, and Deb Seach. Red not only had the Moggy team to beat but the gusty wind and a small sun shower which proved challenging for all.Carolyn Murray and Karyn Fraser fought hard against Judy and Deb and despite many deuces remained unable to get those illusive winningTheypoints.managed six games. Deb McCormack and Loretta Armitage also worked hard as the wind diverted a few tense shots outside the court.

GOLF AVENEL GOLF CLUB NUMBERS were a bit depleted on Saturday with four players contesting the Victorian Sandgreen Championships at Hamilton and quite a few having other commitments. There wasn’t enough ladies for a comp so they joined in with the men for a stableford round.Theyoungsters did it again with Campbell Smith, playing off his newly reduced handicap, carding a very impressive 39 points on the shortHuddycourse.Black was just two back with 37 points. Line balls went to Ron Harrison (34) and Kevvi Fiorini (33) in a count back from DaveNTP’sFullager.went to Mark Hannigan on the 5th and Dave Fullager on the 14th and the D & P on seven was claimed by Campbell, even though he forgot to put his name on it. The course is holding up well but with the weather starting to warm up a bit the grass will take off, so if anyone is able to do some mowing it would be much appreciated.Areminder that the ladies tournament is on in a few weeks so it would be great to have the course in tip top condition.ThisSaturday is the third round of the club championships for the men, so it’s a stroke round off the blue tees. The ladies comp will be decided on the day. The golfing gods were certainly looking favourably on Avenel Golf Club for our annual tournament as we had perfect weather for both days. The tournament kicked off on the Saturday with the Pioneer Park 4BBB Par event for Men and Ladies. We were happy with the attendance although a few more ladies pairs would’ve been great. We had players from Euroa, Broadford, Seymour, Temora, Nagambie and a great group of blokes fromTheMallacoota.coursewas in fantastic condition considering all the rain we’ve had and many visitors couldn’t believe how “dry” it was underfoot.

WINNERS: Euroa‘s Rowena Ellis and Sue Vaughan were too strong in their tennis match against Mansfield Blue, winning 8–5.
THE EUROA GAZETTE, Wednesday, August 31, 2022 - Page 21euroagazette.com.au
The winners of the Pioneer Park and Men’s event were the local pairing of Alex and Lindsay Smith who returned a terrific plus 12. Young Lindsay was complaining of a sore back afterwards, having had to “carry” Uncle Alex all the way around theNotcourse.sure if the handicapper has caught up with LindsayRunners-upyet. were the Broadford pairing of Robert S McDonald and Shaun Culpin with an excellent plus eight. The winners of the Ladies event by virtue of a countback, were Anne Burns (Avenel) and Michelle Thomson (Euroa) with plus five with the Seymour pairing of Pam Jarvis and Liz Gee being the “unlucky” runners-up, also with plus five. Line balls went to Mark Hannigan & Adam Harrap, (plus seven), David Fullager & Tim Batten (plus six) and Jed and Cam Smith (plus six). Nearest the Pins went to Maureen King and Don Hughes on the 14th and Irene Keogh and Dale Smith on the 18th. Irene was also the delighted winner of the Avenel Meats Meat Tray raffle. Glorious sunshine greeted players from far and wide on Sunday morning and 53 took to the course to contest the 18 hole championship. At the end of the round, Ed Carracher (Euroa) and Michael Ladewig (Hidden Valley) were tied on 76 so a playoff was required.
The pair came away with four games against Mary and Lyn.Moggy then showed their superior ability to deal with the weather and their skilful ballMaryplacement.managed a few sidelines and Judy some ripper serves, almost aces, completing the day with all the sets and not the wooden spoon. Moglonemby six-48 defeated Mansfield Red nil-21 Grey skies and rain on the journey across to Euroa and more rain on arrival put doubts in the mind for both teams in the contest between Mansfield Black and Euroa. Play got underway as the weatherEuroa’simproved.strengthened team gave the visitors a taste of ‘finals’ tennis, both teams having made the final four.
Playing the par four first hole, both players were putting for Michaelpar.was first away but his putt came up short while Ed had chipped up to close and knocked in his putt for his fifth win of this tournament.Ed also collected a very handy prize for scoring an eagle on the second hole. Many thanks to the “anonymous” donor for that fantasticAprize!!grade handicap winner was Rick Wills (Yea) with 74 nett.B grade scratch went to former member, (and Life Member) Greg (Hoppy) Hopkins, who, despite threatening to forgo his round because he may have felt a little under weather - self-inflicted of course, still managed to card a great round of 80 off theHisstick.fellow Mallacootians couldn’t believe he could’ve posted such a good score given the shenanigans the night before.Bgrade handicap went to our own Tim Batten - well deserved as he does a heck of a lot around the club.
Euroa’s Sue Vaughan and Rowena Ellis played a lengthy set against Black’s Jenny Bell and Di Ellis coming away with the eight-five win much after the other set wasLyndalldone. Bigland and Lyn Pierce were also too strong for Rhonda Carpenter and Di Bergelin winning eight-five. It would be a long day. Intermittent light rain, wind gusts and sunshine made play interesting but for the most part conditions wereMostideal.sets went to thirteen games and went Euroa’s way, but a determined final pairing of Di Ellis and Rhonda took theirs eight-five for Black as consolation. Euroa five-45 defeated Mansfield Black one-31 Euroa and Benalla now share top spot on the ladder with 74 points, Terip on 73, Black 67, Blue 44, Moglonemby 35, and Red 23. For next week’s final round Blue host Benalla, and Black host Red, Terip host Moglonemby and Euroa have theSemi-fibye.nals the following week will be at Mansfield. On Monday, September 5 everyone is welcome to attend Mansfield Tennis Association’s AGM at the clubhouse at Members7pm.and non-members are invited. On Saturday, August 27, the girls were part of Hawthorn’s debut AFLW team, not only becoming some of the first woman athletes to don the Hawthorn colors, but also to do so on Marvel Stadium in a historical face off with Essendon.
“Five years ago, six years ago, that didn’t happen. It’s so exciting for us to be able to live out that dream... and for young girls to be able to come and watch that, and that’s the new norm”, she said. The match was more than a dream for Sophie Locke, dedicating the game to her mother, who passed away after a brave battle with cancer only two weeks ago.Not only was Locke able to take to the field with pride in her heart, but also cement her name in the history books as the first ever woman to kick a goal for Hawthorn AFLW. Locke’s father Stu told ABC Radio that he had hope that his daughter would be the one to make history.
After years of emotional turmoil, a break from the game amidst COVID and finding her passion for the sport again, Smith looks forward to progressing her game with Hawthorn.
GVFNL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE WHAT a beautiful day it was for the last home and awayEuroagame.started with the centre pass but took a while to get the score on the board with Benalla showing Euroa they were not going to have it all the own way. Tylah Marchbank was making her presence known with several intercepts early. The Saints were making better use of the ball early in the quarter but the Magpies, with a strong second half of the term, finished one up at theEuroabreak.started the second quarter with a bit more drive and tightened up their game. Still plenty of pressure being applied in defence, and goalers Karly Wappett and Bree Poole were moving well in the ring and finishing with some lovely goaling. Euroa pushed further ahead at half time. At the start of the third, Benalla were working hard to tighten the score and the Maggies were making some unforced errors. Tylah continued to notch up intercepts and Bridget Hill was menacing around the centre court getting plenty of deflections. Going into the last quarter Euroa had an 11 goal lead but knew they could not take their foot off the pedal and seemed to be able to create space and play a more flowing game. Second and third efforts in defence end were giving the Maggies opportunities to extend their lead and they came away with a 16 goal win. The girls will be playing in an elimination final next week so hope we can see as many supporters as possible come along to cheer them on against Echuca in Seymour.Euroa 47 Benalla 31 Best Players awarded by the coach - Tylah Marchbank, Karly Wappett, Bree Poole. UNDER 17 THERE was the faint, almost palpable, hum of excitement around the U17 game between the Benalla Saints and the Euroa Magpies on Saturday. Both teams had experienced some heavy losses, both teams had shown signs of promise, and both teams desperately wanted to win the last game of the season. Benalla started off strongly, quickly establishing a five goal lead in the first quarter which helped build their confidence.Euroawere slower to start, wayward passes and simple errors reflecting the nervous tension. It wasn’t long however, before the Magpies were playing beautiful netball, narrowing the gap with clever passages of play Seamless teamwork and vocal encouragement became more obvious, with the building crowd of spectators helping to build the atmosphere.Thesecond and third quarters were a fantastic display of junior netball, as the lead swapped and changed between the two teams. There were intercepts, high leaping rebounds, tough physical contests and inspired moves and passes from all the Magpies which meant that going into the last quarter, Euroa had a slim two goal lead. But netball can be a cruel mistress.Nomatter how much the Magpies wanted to win the game, their last quarter allowed the Saints back in, and then the sea of red, black and white supporters carried Benalla home.

Scarlett Trotter had a great game in wing defence with clever passes and many turnovers.Defensive pressure by Lily Fowler, Tess Walker, Oakley Paul and Maggie Pittock kept the Saints under constant pressure, providing many turn overs, intercepts and rebounds.Forfour quarters the Magpies dominated and played exceptionally well as a team, and came away with a welldeserved 28 goal win.

“We all hoped she’d get the first goal, I said to her today it doesn’t always go the way you want it to go, but today it did”, he said. In the midst of tragedy, Locke received a flood of support from her teammates and club, teammate Kaitlyn Ashmore said “We played on the MCG two days after her mum passed and she was just so resilient. And the way she goes about it, you know, she’s only young as well and it just means so much to the playing group to have her around”.Coach Bec Goddard was also full of praise for Locke, commenting on her resilience and courage taking the field on Saturday night, calling her “the most dangerous forward on ground”.
EVERY EFFORT: In a warm pre-spring day Euroa fought the good fight against a strong Benalla side.
“To have a reset and a break and to be able to miss footy, and actually reconnect with it, allowed me to come out in 2021 and 2022 and just enjoy playing, whether I was getting picked or not,” she said. “It’s been really good trying to develop that next layer, but also keep pushing and keep working on the role I normally play.” Both women are incomparably proud to be pulling on the brown and gold for the AFLW season, having done their time in respective representative sides, years in VFLW and earned their positions in the AFLW. Only time will tell how many more records will be made, history books will be rewritten and glass ceilings will be shattered by these remarkable young women that Euroa and surrounds are extremely proud of.

THE Euroa senior football side cemented third place on the Goulburn Valley League end-of-season ladder at the weekend with a hard-fought win over a very determined Benalla outfit. With a number of changes to the senior line-up Coach Rowan was nervous going into the round 18 clash against a side whose improvement in the second half of the season was there for all to Jacksee. Hellier came back into the team and immediately made a positive impact at the centre bounce with his bullocking clearance work matched by his fellow midfield gun in Ben Giobbi. Despite this dominance out of the middle, the Benalla side were able to rebound the ball well and give their tall forwards good supplyplacing a great deal of pressure on the Euroa defenders - which again was absorbed very well by the likes of Nate Trotter, Dan Garside and Ben Harrison.WithBenalla in the lead at the half-time break, the Euroa team re-grouped and set about getting the game back on their terms - this eventuated throughout the first half of the third term where the Magpies piled on five unanswered goals to wrestle the lead from the home team and put the game in their control.
Three teams loaded for finals
In what was another vintage performance from club games record holder Craig Bamford his best on ground effort puts him well and truly in the spotlight to not only lead his team to success in this finals series but indeed to perhaps capture a league medal for what has been an outstanding season. Craig was able supported by many in their route of the Benalla side - none other than classy veteran Klay Giovannini whose return to this team has certainly been a welcome bonus. With so much forward power in this side many might overlook the excellent way the midfield and defensive components of the team carry out their roles. Running the ball out of the backline helps to set up many attacking moves with the likes of Haiden Berry, Andrew Crosbie and Nic Asquith showing their ability to run all over the ground is a real weapon for coach McKernan.Withseveral players missing from this team in the win over Benalla, selection may prove to be a headache in week one of the finals - one that may well be a welcome headache.Euroa- 21.11.137 defeated Benalla - 1.2.8 Best players: Craig Bamford, Klay Giovannini, Robbie Wilson, Haiden Berry, Nic AsquithGoal kickers: Robbie Wilson (6), Harrison Lane (4), Craig Bamford (3), Nic Asquith (3), Daniel Yogarajah (2), Josh Robertson (1), Toby Martin (1), Nic Burke (1) UNDER 18 BLESSED with conditions for their final game of the season, the thirds boys were inspired to finish the year in the winner’s column. The Magpies broke the game open in the second quarter compiling five goals to Benalla’s nil with Charlie Watson leading the charge through the middle of the ground accompanied by Ryan Hill who was prolific in winning con-testant ball. This meant the Magpies went into the main break with a 36 point lead a real sniff of Benallavictory.came out firing after half time with frenetic pressure and urgency around the contest which sent the Mag-pies in to a momentary lapse of panic however, to the team and coaching staff credit, no damage was done on the scoreboard and composure was re-gained when Nic Hill went back and slotted a much needed goal. At the last break Euroa held a lead of 29 points, with one final effort required to secure the victory. Again, the Saints came out firing and put pressure on to the visiting side getting within eight points deep in the throes of the final term. When this pressure came, the back six went to another level in defence, spring boarding the ball forward where Cohen Paul and Darby Wilson continued to work tirelessly.Inthe end the Magpies proved to be too strong in what could be seen as a real team performance and one that the boys will remember for many years to come.
