A “childcare desert” RECENTLY released data from Victoria University’s Mitchell Institute highlights deficiencies in the facilitation of childcare across rural and regional communities, including the Euroa electorate.

The study classifies communities as a childcare ‘desert’ or an ‘oasis’, depending on the availability of care.

Euroa MP Steph Ryan said the data demonstrated that cities have the best access to childcare.

“The research confirms what we already know; parents in our region are having to drive their children long distances to access childcare,” she said.

“Many smaller rural communities have no childcare at all.

“Even our larger towns often don’t have enough childcare services to cater for the number of children who live there.”

Ms Ryan said while the region was fortunate to

have some great childcare providers, many parents could not return to work because they did not have access to care.

“I often talk to women in particular who are struggling to return to work because they can’t get their child into care,” she said.

“There is a direct correlation between the accessibility of childcare and the participation of mothers with a child aged

under five years in the workforce.

“Access to childcare is important not only for parents but also to giving children a great start in life.

“Research shows that children who have highquality early childhood education and care are more likely to succeed later in life.

“It’s also an important plank in ensuring we can grow our regional economy.

NBN boost for Indi INDI will be on the receiving end of a large investment made towards the NBN network that has been outlined in the 202223 federal budget.

A $480 million investment has been proposed to improve the capability of the network across Australia.

Minister for communications, urban infrastructure, cities and the arts, Paul Fletcher, said the investment in the non-commercial fixed wireless network will significantly improve the quality of services provided over fixed wireless and satellite networks.

“This means more people can be served by NBN fixed wireless, it means higher speed services on the NBN fixed wireless network, and it means households and business customers can use higher amounts of data,” he said.

“The upgrade will expand the fixed wireless footprint coverage by up to 50 per cent, enabling 120,000 additional premises to access fixed wireless services instead of Sky Muster satellite services.”

This upgrade will see NBN offer new higher-speed services to the fixed wireless network, including higher speeds during the “network busy hour” - the time of day when there are more internet users, typically around 8:00 pm.

Minister for Regionalisation, Regional Communications and Regional Education Senator Bridget McKenzie said the

investment would lead to significant improvements in the quality of regional telecommunications.

“The NBN is a critical and core part of our national infrastructure and economy, enabling employment, connecting families, and supporting business, including in the electorate of Indi,” she said.

“Regions across Australia made their voices heard through the Regional Telecommunications Review - telecommunications matters for every community, including ours, and this is a fantastic investment in the region’s future.”

Minister for finance Simon Birmingham said the $480 million funding boost would improve services for those in regional areas.

“This is another important investment in the NBN that will deliver better and faster internet to Australian households and businesses across the fixed wireless network,” he said.

“The NBN has been there to support Australians throughout the pandemic.

“Our government will continue to make critical investments in the NBN that will enhance the internet experience for households and businesses right now and into the future.

“This includes many in the Indi region, producing extensive economic opportunities.”

Indi waterways to receive funding HEALTHY Rivers funding has resulted in a significant allocation of funding for Indi to help communities deliver on-ground projects to improve the health of local rivers and wetlands.

Minister for Resources and Water, Keith Pitt, and Senator for Victoria, Bridget McKenzie, announced a grant to re-snag the Kiewa River to protect threatened fish species through the $20 million Murray-Darling Healthy Rivers Program.

Mr Pitt said the grants will provide direct assistance to the Indi region.

“I am pleased to announce Indi will receive $398,888 in this last tranche of Healthy Rivers funding,” he said.

Ms McKenzie praised the funding as it will allow people to use their knowledge to care for the Indi environment.

“This grant puts money into businesses, providing employment and strengthening recreational amenities and tourism,” she said.

“Importantly these Healthy Rivers grants support Basin economies, with

Police minister snubs police station visit

By GUS RIDDER ACCORDING to Euroa MP Steph Ryan, the Police Minister Lisa Neville has declined a visit to the Euroa police station to inspect the need for immediate improvements.

Euroa MP Steph Ryan stated that she formally invited the Minister to town last month, after locals raised concerns about the inadequacies of the town‘s police station.

Earlier this month, Ms Ryan was joined at the station by shadow minister for police Brad Battin who agreed that there was a pressing need to upgrade the facilities.

Following the rebuff from the police minister, Ms Ryan said she was concerned Ms Neville was not witnessing the firsthand the needs of frontline police officers.

“I cordially invited the Minister to visit the Euroa Police Station to see exactly what is required to allow police to do their jobs safely and efficiently,” she said.

“Despite the Minister‘s current refusal to meet I want her to know the invite is always on the table.

“This is not about politics; it‘s about creating a safe workplace for police officers and an environment where victims feel safe to seek justice.

“I was very pleased that the Shadow Police Minister Brad Battin was willing to come when I invited him several weeks ago and I know he was struck by how inadequate the current facilities are.

“It‘s critical the government is aware of the challenges facing both officers working at the station and community members

who need their services.”

Ms Ryan added that she was concerned by the reluctance of Labor Ministers to visit regional areas.

“While I appreciate that the Minister is busy, it‘s really difficult to speak for and represent country police officers if she doesn‘t leave her Melbourne office,” Ms Ryan said.

“The government unfortunately has form in rebuffing attempts to reach across the aisle to work collaboratively to achieve positive outcomes for regional communities.

“Euroa is a growing township and the strain on the police station is already evident.

“Police officers deserve the best quality facilities so they can feel safe at work. I am hopeful the minister will rethink her decision and make space in her diary.”

A government spokesperson has disputed Ms Ryan‘s claims that the police minister declined an invitation.

“Our record $3.8 billion police investment is delivering 3135 new sworn police officers across the state, including an additional 72 sworn officers for the Goulburn Valley Division, which services Euroa,” they said.

“The operational need for new and upgraded police stations is determined by Victoria Police.

“We will continue to work closely with them to ensure our police have the tools and resources they need to keep all Victorians safe.

“The opposition are not particularly well placed to offer advice on police matters – during their time in government they cut $100 million from the police budget and sacked 350 police staff.”

Buying a house still priority for regional Vics ACCORDING to member for Euroa Steph Ryan, home ownership is still an important goal for young people in country Victoria.

Ms Ryan has made these claims following Premier Daniel Andrews’ recent comments.

“I get a sense, I’ve talked to my kids and their friends, they’re much more focused on perhaps living where they want to live and ownership is not such a big thing,” Mr Andrews said.

“They are happy to rent with secure terms.”

Ms Ryan disagreed with the statements made by the Premier.

“I was shocked by Daniel Andrews’ comments,” Ms Ryan said.

“If Labor MPs think young people don’t care about owning their own home, they need to get out and talk to real people a bit more.

“The availability and affordability of housing is one of the biggest challenges facing our region.”

Ms Ryan said the Government had introduced 42 new taxes, with a majority being centred on

Ms Ryan said her party has a plan to make the Australian dream a reality.

“If elected to government the Victorian Nationals will bring 50,000 new plots of land to market across regional Victoria so people can buy a house and live in their own community,” Ms Ryan said.

“We need to cut red tape and make the planning process work for regional Victorians.

“We have a positive plan to help regional areas recover and rebuild after years of neglect from the Andrews Government.”

Currie Park artwork provides joy to residents

By GUS RIDDER DURING the second year of lockdown, two residents of Currie Park in Euroa began an art project to bring joy to their local community.

Artist Gillian Coates and local craftsperson Margaret Headland have revealed their beautiful panels on site at Currie Park.

The three mosaic panels were created over six months, using recycled shower screens and other materials from their surroundings that were repurposed for the installation.

The first panel depicts dragonflies and is titled ‘Weigher of Souls’.

The second panel of a gecko is named ‘Of the Land’.

The third panel, ‘Commu-

nity’, was made to represent the residents of Currie Park.

Ms Headland discussed the happiness she felt during the creative process.

“This project was something that helped us get through a lonely time, with little contact with family or friends,” she said.

“We’ve displayed the three panels on the outside wall of one of the units for visitors to enjoy.”

Ms Headland said creating the panels with her friend Ms Coates made the outcome of the art even better.

“We had a few friendly squabbles while trying to get them made but it was always such a joy,” she said.

“Once they were finished and placed up, we really felt so happy with them and

hope that they make others happy.”

Currie Park is part of the Old Colonists Association of Victoria (OCAV) and is a community that Ms Headland is proud to be a part of.

“OCAV gives its residents independence, security, privacy and a place of their own,” she said.

Executive assistant at OCAV Blair Jackson was proud of the work done by the residents.

“Community is at the heart of everything we do and the artwork at Currie Park is a shining example of how a group of people can come together and produce something extraordinary.”

Ms Headland and Ms Coates stated that there were plans to create more artwork in the near future.

Music lives on

By GUS RIDDER EUROA local Rodney Horsfall has been transforming old pianos into stunning timber string instruments for over four years now.

He calls these ‘weird things with strings’.

Despite not having a background as an artist, Rodney has found his passion since retiring.

“I worked in marketing before I retired,” he said.

“It was pre-internet so it was still a bit more hands on, cutting and pasting things and making materials.

“I’ve been doing this for four or five years now and it gives me a lot of joy.”

The flair for the arts is noticeable as soon as you approach the Horsfall home.

A collection of blue welded panels stand on the roadside of the property, providing privacy and sheltering it from street noise.

Rodney had built this himself after he purchased a $99 welding kit and taught himself how to use it.

The garden around the home, created and managed by his wife includes giant, ten foot tall cacti and other bright, exotic plants that immediately catch your eye.

When walking into the workshop in the garage, you are immediately greeted with Rodney’s latest artistic pursuit - string instruments

built from the wood of old pianos.

In the workshop sits uniquely designed guitars, ukuleles and a lyre.

The colours of the timber vary between models, as does their shape and design.

“I don’t want them all to be the same,” he said.

“I want to keep them unique and different to what everyone else is doing.”

Rodney’s creations have recently been displayed at an exhibition held at Melbourne’s iconic Blender Studios.

The galleries there have been known for their street art and have just displayed pieces made from recycled pianos, including furniture

and other instruments.

Rodney says he has had no trouble finding pianos to use for his instruments.

“Surprisingly it has been really easy to find pianos,” he said.

“The first one I got was from a church who replied to my ad in half an hour.

“People online keep wanting to get rid of old pianos it seems.

“I’m saving them from ending up in the landfill.

“It’s giving an opportunity for the music to live on.”

Another exhibition of the weird things with strings will be held at the BackART Gallery in Violet Town during April, titled ‘And the music lives on’.

THE Country Fire Authority (CFA) has amended the fire danger period (FDP) for several municipalities, including the Strathbogie Shire.

The FDP in the region has been lifted at 1am on Monday.

The period begun on November 29, 2021 and introduced several restrictions relating to items and activities that could potentially cause fires.

CFA declares the FDP for each shire or council at different times in the lead up to the fire season.

It will be determined based on the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and other local conditions.

The FDP may be declared as early as October in some municipalities, and typically remains in place until the fire danger lessens, which in some areas could be as late as May. According to the latest Australian Seasonal Outlook, higher rainfall totals have resulted in below average fire conditions, with reduced fire activity in both grasslands and forests this summer.

CFA District 22 Assistant Chief Fire Officer Tony Owen said this season has predominantly seen grassfires throughout the area.

“There is still plenty of growth throughout District 22, and there’ll be some planned burns over the next few weeks so we encourage people to check https://plannedburns. ffm.vic.gov.au if they see smoke,” he said.

ACFO Owen also emphasised that while the FDP is coming to an end in some areas, it is still important to remain vigilant.

“We’re urging everyone to stay safe, whether you’re living in or travelling to high bushfire risk areas,” he said.

“Please monitor the conditions on hot, dry and windy days, as we may still see some days of elevated fire risk.”

The CFA has asked residents to check local conditions are safe for any burn-off they were considering undertaking.

“You must register your burn-offs, check weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations,” he said.

“Registering your burn-off ensures that if somebody reports smoke, the incident will be cross checked with the burnoff register, which will then prevent volunteer firefighters being taken away from workplaces, families and potentially genuine emergencies.”

By GUS RIDDER MEMBERS of the Euroa community have joined together to hold a ‘Feast for Freedom’, raising money and awareness for refugees.

Feast for Freedom is a shared food experience in aid of people seeking asylum that was initiated by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC).

The ASRC encouraged people around to the country to host a meal at home or at your workplace.

Recipes were provided by refugees and any funds raised would go towards the ASRC. The Euroa feast was hosted in the beautiful garden of Leah Jones’ home on Friday, March 25.

Several people attended, with fantastic food from all over the world shared amongst the group.

“The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre has an extensive kitchen and they feed a lot of refugees in Melbourne,” she said.

“A lot of the chefs are from the refugee community themselves and that’s how this event

started - it’s an extension of that.

“The idea was that people can have a feast for freedom in their local community.

“A lot of people are getting on to that idea because it’s not such a difficult exercise if you have help.

“It’s a lovely way for people to get together and discuss an important topic.”

Ms Fluhr is one of many local residents making an impact for refugees.

“We have a Rural Australians for Refugees group here in Euroa and we have the One World shop on Binney Street,” she said.

“I’ve heard that other gatherings are happening nearby in the region, such as Wangaratta and Mansfield.

While they were happy to contribute to the cause, Ms Fluhr recognised that the refugee issue was still very relevant and needed attention.

“There are still people in detention and on Manus Island and those lives have been altered immensely,” she said.

“I really worry about their mental health of the people who have survived nine or 10 years of detention.”

Money donated from the event will go towards the 6500 people that the ASRC supports.

SNACK TIME: New catering facilities are being tested on two of the six three-car VLocity train sets destined for the North East rail line.

VLocity trains get a catering upgrade TESTING of new VLocity trains equipped with catering upgrades is currently being conducted on the North East rail line.

Two of the six three-car train sets now have the new catering facilities and the full rollout of trains is due by mid-year.

The all-new purpose-built modern catering facilities were designed in response to passenger feedback and will be rigorously tested to ensure reliable operation for passengers.

Pay rise for councillors

By GUS RIDDER WAGES for mayors, deputy mayors and councillors across Victoria will increase after a recent tribunal ruling.

The pay rises were made under the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal and Improving Parliamentary Standards Act 2019.

The Local Government Act 2020 transferred responsibility for determining Victorian mayoral, deputy mayoral and councillor allowances to the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal.

Mayors in the Strathbogie Shire Council will now be paid up to $74,706 per annum.

This increase will be backdated to December 18, 2021.

“Strathbogie Shire Council falls within the lowest category of allowances comparatively with councils across the state.”

Cr Binks explained that beyond the pay increase, there would be further benefits for councillors following the tribunal ruling.

“In addition to the allowance set out by the tribunal, councillors also receive a travel allowance,” she said.

Victims of crime help to fuel justice inquiry A STATEWIDE inquiry has recommended 100 changes to address rising rates of imprisonment and recidivism in Victoria’s criminal justice system.

State MP Tania Maxwell was part of the Legislative Council Legal and Social Issues Committee, as they received 170 submissions and undertook eight days of public hearings, beginning in the rural city last June.

Ms Maxwell initiated the review through a referral motion in 2020, which launched a community–based investigation into an ever–increasing prison population and high recidivism rates among offenders.

Tabling the findings of the inquiry in front of the Legislative Council this week, Ms Maxwell commended the bravery of victim–survivors who had shared their justice system experiences with the committee throughout the investigation.

“I hope the recommendations in relation to victims of crime support will be accepted and implemented by the government

as soon as possible,” she said.

“Some of these are not new to this parliament and focus on the recurring theme that prevention and early intervention is essential for fair, just, safe communities.

“We must make sure that any reforms brought about by this inquiry reduce risk, support community safety and balance the rights of victims over those of offenders – otherwise, we may simply reduce statistics without reducing crime or the harm that accompanies it.”

Legal and Social Issues Committee chair Fiona Patten said the committee had targeted those with lived experiences from throughout the state, with early intervention, over–representation by vulnerable populations and victims of crime identified as key areas which needed addressing.

She said victims of crime had been integral in shaping the committee‘s 73 findings and 100 recommendations, with a key focus on amending the govern-

ment‘s Criminal Procedure Act 2009.

“We need urgent work to improve the way we deliver justice, to ensure community safety, and to find modern solutions to reduce offending and reoffending,” she said.

“Victims told us we need to embed trauma–informed practices into the design of the justice system – it needs to be more accessible and a less adversarial process for victims of crime.

“We just made it a priority to involve as many individuals with lived experience of the justice system as possible – we heard some of the most heart wrenching, tragic evidence from victims of crime who have survived unimaginable loss and grief.

“I thank them for their bravery and generosity, and assure them that their contribution was influential on the committee‘s recommendations.”

Ms Maxwell said upwards of 50 per cent of Victorian offenders incarcerated would go on to re–offend in the existing justice

system, and urged policy makers to ensure the state‘s corrections system remained sufficiently corrective in its action and outcomes.

“When I brought my referral motion to parliament in June 2020, I noted that significantly driving down crime has to be a goal that we all share,” she said.

“We examined the opportunities for reform to break what is often a downward spiral of offending for those caught up in crime, and ultimately how we can limit the lifetime of suffering for those who are victims and survivors.

“I look forward to the government‘s careful consideration of the 100 recommendations in this report and I will continue to advocate for their implementation, especially the 31 directed at better supporting victims of crime.”

More health checks for farmers AGRICULTURE Victoria is investing to improve the health of farmers and their families across the region.

Health checks and referrals are being increased to encourage farmers and their families to prioritise their health and wellbeing.

Injuries and poor health can impact the whole family and can cause issues to the productivity and profitability of farms.

The Victorian Government will follow-up their commitment to improve farmer health by investing $400,000 to deliver more health checks and improve referrals for farmers.

The project is being implemented across Victoria by health clinicians from the National Centre for Farmer Health (the Centre) and its partners.

The program begun in 2020 and has resulted in almost 200 health checks taking place at field days, community events, and at selected health services.

The continued investment will be put towards increasing the number of clinics and services available across Victoria, training more health clinicians, developing protocols to support the expansion of existing effective health programs, and identifying locally accessible referral pathways.

Agriculture Victoria’s acting executive director for agriculture policy, Dr Julie Simons, recognised the importance of health and how it impacts rural communities and economies.

“Investing in a healthy and safe rural sector means a more resilient rural Victoria,” she said.

Unemployment hits record low in regional Victoria DATA from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has shown Victoria’s regional unemployment rate has dropped to a record low.

The figure has dropped to three per cent, the lowest of all the states and the lowest ever recorded for regional Victoria.

The national regional unemployment rate stands at four per cent.

In the year leading to February, Victoria’s regional youth unemployment was the lowest of all the states at eight per cent.

Treasurer Tim Pallas insists industries are surging back to life due to the investment of more than $13 billion in government funding.

“Our ongoing investment in regional Victoria is creating

more jobs and helping businesses and families bounce back from the effects of the pandemic, delivering economic benefits across the state,” he said.

“This means that businesses and households across Victoria can feel increasingly confident and secure about their future and the economy as we move forwards.”

Minister for regional development, Mary-Anne Thomas, recognised the impact that regional Victoria had on the economy.

“Regional Victoria is going from strength to strength and it’s no wonder - with regional unemployment the lowest in the nation, creating more jobs and boosting our local economies.”

MONEY BACK FOR DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT: Regional Victorians will now be able to claim money back on food and entertainment expenses.

Food and entertainment rebates announced A NEW program has allowed for rebates on dining and entertainment experiences across regional Victoria.

The Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program opened on Tuesday, March 29 and provides an opportunity for people to claim money back on recent expenses.

This was introduced in an attempt to build customer confidence and support industries impacted by the most recent Omicron wave of COVID-19.

Under the program, custom-

ers will be able to claim 25 per cent back on eligible expenses.

Each customer will be able to claim up to $125 in combined rebates across the two programs.

The dining program will allow diners outside the City of Melbourne to claim 25 per cent back on their bill if at least $40 is spent at hospitality venues in Victoria.

These are available Monday to Thursday, dining from Friday to Sunday will qualify for the rebate.

Eligible businesses include cafes, restaurants, bars, pubs, registered clubs, breweries, distilleries, wineries, fast food, take-away shops and food courts.

Under the entertainment program, customers will also be able to claim 25 per cent back on their bill if the bill is at least $40.

Suitable businesses for these rebates include cinemas, exhibitions, museums, galleries, zoos, live performances and theme parks.

These can be claimed on any

day of the week.

Businesses will not need to register for this program, they can simply provide customers with a printed or electronic, itemised tax receipt or tax invoice.

The receipt must include your trading name, ABN, date and the total amount spent (including GST).

SPORTS ACHIEVEMENTS: The Nagambie Golf Club held its first presentation night in more than two years and many awards were handed out.

Two important ones were: Life membership to club president Jeff Lodding who has been a member for 51 years, and trophies to Jeremy Ezard for the 2020 and 2021 season trophy championship wins. Well done to all award recipients.

Nagambie Pennant Bowls team, of division four took out the Goulburn Valley Playing area weekend division four title, downing Seymour VRI in the final round. Good bowling folks.

The Nagambie under 14 cricket team won the 2022 premiership match recently against the Euroa side. Well done to the players, coaches and all supporters.

The RSL Charity Golf Day was a great success with 60 players tackling the course and raising over $1700 for the local RSL branch.

More training for Nicholls doctors THE Nationals Government will continue training medical specialists in Nicholls as projects receive further investment.

A $708.6 million investment aims to train more local doctors in specialist areas through the Specialist Training Program.

The Specialist Training Program has been supporting training for medical positions outside of traditional metropolitan teaching hospitals since 2010.

This investment will maintain the program for another four years, offering more training positions for more rural doctors across a range of specialities.

Nationals candidate for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, welcomed

the funding.

“We want our doctors to train right here in Nicholls,” he said.

“We know that people are more likely to settle in the place that they undertake their training.

“Training more doctors locally to become specialists in the areas that we are lacking will address some of the gaps we have in our medical specialist system.

“The Nationals are growing our rural medical workforce and getting it done for local community.

Also added were two long awaited disabled parking spots at the White Hart.

The next date for the Longwood Action Group meeting will be April 6th at 7pm, venue to be advised.

The National Rowing championships, originally planned for Sydney will now be held at Nagambie Regatta Centre, March 27 - April 3 and the Longwood Rec Reserve has been proposed as a great place for entrants and their families to camp for this event.

Facility details and the shop, pub and Rockery hours have been made available on the Longwood Community Facebook page.

Longwood Football Netball club are looking for junior players in both Football and Netball - contact Ricki Shiner on 0411 152 536.

Breakfast Club has commenced at Longwood Primary School each Wednesday at 8.30am.

This is a great opportunity for our students to come together before school to share breakfast in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Building works are slowly but surely happening with our new toilet block coming to fruition.

Increased penalties for farm invasions NEW penalties for farm invasions have been passed in Victorian parliament despite some proposed amendments by the Liberals and Nationals being shot down.

Legislation was introduced following enquiries into animal activists trespassing on privately owned farmland and the impact that had on Victorian agriculture.

On the spot fines have been introduced for trespassers under the new ruling.

This includes fines of $1272 for an individual and $8178 for an organisation.

These can increase to $10,904 for an individual and up to $54,522 for an organisation if there is more serious offending.

However, an amendment proposed by the Liberals and Nationals to increase the maximum fine for illegal farm invasions was blocked.

The Liberals and Nationals proposed two further amendments to the Livestock Management Amendment (Animal Activism) Bill 2021 which would double the maximum fine for individuals.

The Liberals and Nationals amendments aimed to raise the maximum fine for an individual from $10,904

to $21,809, while also including protection for a farmer’s river frontage.

This was shelved as Labor, Greens and Independent MPs joined together to deny the changes.

Shadow minister for agriculture Peter Walsh criticised the Labor Government for not sticking up for Victorian farmers.

“Doubling the maximum fine would have sent a strong message to anyone considering trespassing on a farmer’s private property that Victoria won’t tolerate illegal farm invasions,” he said.

“Farms are the family home, they’re a sanctuary for the people who live and work on them but these fines could have been much stronger to deter militant activities of law-breaking activists.

“The Agriculture Minister had two long years to get this right, but with the support of the Greens and Independents, Labor has implemented fines that are among the lowest in the nation.”

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) was still pleased with the legislation that passed.

VFF president Emma Germano said the passing of the legislation had been a long time coming.

“The VFF worked with parliamentarians back in 2018 to get the Inquiry

off the ground at a time when we were faced with an unacceptable situation where animal activists were getting off virtually scot-free,” Ms Germano said.

“This is a big step in providing better protection for farmers from law-breaking animal activists.”

Farmers will need to implement a biosecurity management plan for the fines to be applicable.

The VFF said it will work with Agriculture Victoria to assist farmers and put these plans in place.

“At a time when we are dealing with significant human and animal biosecurity outbreaks, our rigorous farm biosecurity systems have never been more important,” Ms Germano said.

“The biosecurity management plans will not only protect farmers from unacceptable harassment by animal activists, but also from potential biosecurity breaches.”

FOOD PROTECTION: Animal activists can pose a serious risk to the biosecurity of farms and the food they produce.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB SATURDAY Golf saw big fields compete for the March Monthly Medal.

In the ladies, captain Sarah Bullen was a clear winner with Net 67.

Maudie Ingram took out division two with Net 74.

In the men’s competition, Paul Robertson who is now playing off scratch was one under the card 71 to take division one and Phil Squires with Net 73 took out division two.

Balls down the line went to Owen Robertson 72, Laurie McMartin 73, Scott Meehan 73.

Dav Mackrell found the course to his liking with 74, Frank O’Connor 74, Paddy McCarthey and Don Bubeck 73.

In the big field of 41 most of the division one players were in the mid to high 70s, whereas the division two field struggled with tricky pin placements and the tee markers at the back.

The Wednesday men’s competition saw Fred Jungwirth a clear winner on 41 points.

Other good scores were Phil Squires, Lucas Paul 38, Bill Wright 36, Jeff Moran 35.

Judy McLean with Net 70 won the ladies division one and Ros Doxey took out division two with 75. Ball winners were Erica Mercer and Kae Lummas.

Friday Twilight competition was won by Gary “The Legend” Ritchie who must have also filled in the results sheet.

Gary’s 19 points was just good enough to edge out Laurie McMartin on countback.

Next Saturday, April 2 Mick Anderson and Bill Wright are on office duty and on 9th April David Baker and Scott Watson will send the field away as we finally return to pre covid arrangements.

The course is at its autumn best.

NAGAMBIE GOLF GOOD scores were hard to come by with a bunched up field and a monster count back needed to separate the placegetters, but the winner was clear on his lonesome with 36 stableford points getting it done Terry Wallis took home the spoils with the handicap equalling total.

coming out on top ahead of Joe Labas, Doug Neville and David Love, with no extreme weather on the day the poor scoring was unexplained.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Lindsay Hall with what he described as a near ace, Tim Baldwin finding the so called surface on the shortened 13th, and Terry Lowis as is often the case walking away with the 16th.

Next week’s golf is a stroke monthly medal and the 5th and final round of the Summer Trophy, tee off will be moved to 9.00 to 9.30am with daylight saving ending also, on office duty is D. Brown and in the bar J. Mills.

Women’s Results Wednesday 23rd March: 11 players turned out for a game of Stroke and for the monthly medal.

The winner of A & B grades was Irene Keogh with 81 net on a C/B from Bev Brown .

The winner of C grade and the monthly medal was Jane Bow with 79 net.

The 9 hole winner was Bev with 37.5 net.

Chicken Run Results Thursday 24th: Over 20 payers played a round of Stableford on the back nine.

The winner was Irene Keogh with 20 pts on a C/B from Michael Kleinig.

N/P on the 13th was Lindsay Hall and on the 16th Shaun Spicer.

VETERAN GOLF THE Goulburn Valley Vets Golfers headed over the border on Monday, March 21 to the pristine Deniliquin Golf Club.

The course was in great condition and it was set up to challenge all our Vets.

There was close to 80 players who hit off, with the shotgun start at 10am.

The weather was heading towards the mid 30’s so fluid intake was high in the player’s minds as they set out to conquer the golf course.

for all players with the lower handicappers bringing in the best scores.

The greens, whilst on the quicker side, were able to be mastered if you read the greens correctly.

Unfortunately many of us failed in this department.

A grade winner, Terry Allen from Shepparton, coming in with a very solid 36 points. He won on countback over Neville Smith, from Numurkah.

In B grade the best score was recorded by Gerald Pennefather from Shepparton, over the consistent Jim Dean, a new player from Kialla.

In C grade players struggled in the conditions with Ian Scurrah from Lockington leading the way with 31 points and the next best being the very popular Max Dawber from Shepparton with 29 points.

Down the line in A grade we had Adam Farrell, ever consistent Vinnie Chan, Ian Hannaford, Graham Peat, Ron Wilkinson, Tom McConchie, Barry Barlow, Peter Barrette and Graeme Willoughby.

B grade had John Radeski, Darryl Sheridan, Bill Padgett, Lawrie Steward, Alan Williams, Norm Purtill, Jack Peacock, Lindsay Simms and Barry Williams.

C grade down the line for the best of the rest went to John Harris, Robert Smith, Peter Lahiff, Ian Campbell, Des Ramsey, Howard Teasdale and our pocket rocket, Lindsay Tatterson.

Nearest the pins went to John Keller, Graeme North and Howard Teasdale.

It was fantastic to see some of our older players doing so well at 85 “plus” years of experience.

They tell me these hard men are at their best when in the tough situations.

We also had birthdays for two of our Young Vets with lifelong friends, Bill Murphy and Lawrie Steward having their 69th birthdays only a day apart.

There would be many stories these two would have about each other, congratulations.

We also look forward to a speedy recovery for our Secretary, Rolf Webber.

It was a major talking point today and we all want you back out on the fairways with us Rolf as soon as your body permits.

Our next event is at Valley View Golf course in

Kyabram, which is always a great day.

The date is the Monday, April 11 so post this on your calendar for this not to miss golf day.

Also we have the Interzone Challenge at Strathbogie in May. A very good course so the first 36 to nominate will play.

KDFNL AVENEL FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB THE teams headed down the Hume a bit light on with only 26 players available for the two games due to plenty of unavailability.

The club would like to give a big thank you to Forest Hill for lending some players so Avenel could get the reserves game in as well as to the reserves boys who doubled up in the senior game.

The reserves fought hard but eventually went down by eight goals.

The senior game was a cracker in hot conditions.

Missing many senior mainstays the boys battled hard all day without rotations against a full strength Forest Hill.

The midfield group lead

by Braydon Avola, Jack Myers, Mitch Tobin and Tommy Tobin in the ruck powered through contests and drove Avenel forward with some speed and exciting play.

Big TK dominated across CHB showing off his versatility in the absence of our key backs. Tim Brook was again dangerous up forward finishing with five goals.

Some wayward kicking cost Avenel the game in the last quarter with a shot after the siren for the win pushing to the left.

It was a great hit out for the boys that were on the park and they now can’t wait for the big one next weekend against Nagambie for round one.

Once again a huge thankyou to Forest Hill for putting on the day.

ROUND SIX Another big week for squash with some close matches, kids going to Albury for a tournament and a fantastic display at the recent Tomorrow Today Foundation’s Come and Try Day. The Benalla Squash Club had a stall at the Come & Try Day which featured an inflatable squash court provided

by Active Racquets.

It was a huge crowd pleaser with the kids and also many adults.

For the full three hours of the display there were constantly at least 8 kids playing at a time, by having two play inside the court and two each on each of the three outside walls.

Everyone had a great time and it was apparent that many kids had quite good skills.

BOWLS EUROA BOWLS CLUB

AS has been customary for a number of years, a ladies 60 and over bowls day ona Thursday has been held at several clubs throughout the Goulburn Murray region and this past Thursday it was Euroa’s turn to host the day and 14 teams arrived to play for the day.

Pauline Naylor, Euroa’s representative welcomed all and hoped they would have a great day ov bowls.

Winners at the end of play were the Kyabram team of Gill Barrett, Jan McFadjean, Possie Grylls, and Margaret (last name unknown) with 47 points and runnersup were the Murchison team of Barbara Patterson, Lorraine Higgins, Wendy Lito, Niv Lenane with 40 points.

Jill Barrett of Kyabram thanked Euroa for the great day and her team for their good play all day.

Raffle winners for the day were two bowlers from East Sheppparton, Shepparton Park, Kyabram clubs and one each from Moama and Murchison.

Pauline thanked all for coming and wished them a safe trip home and hoped to see them all at Kyabram this Thursday.

Euroa will host another day on April 28.

Social bowls kicks off with a bang

By AUDREY MCINTOSH WHILE the weather has been good this past week, many of the championship matches have been played, some finished to the final stage and others to the semi-finals.

The club 100 up was won

by Billl Taylor, defeating Jamie Greasley.

The B grade championship was between Charmaine Reid and Alex Grant and this was won by Alex in a good match to watch by the spectators.

Also played was a semifinal of the mixed pairs between Anne and Ken Sutcliffe and Margaretha Cerini and Bill Sargood, this was won by Anne and Ken. The 21 up between Tony Kingma and Shane Drysdale resulted in a win for Tony.

Lindsay Cocking and David Cerini are to play Andy Houston and Jim Scarlett to decide the winners, and in the ladies pairs Pauline Naylor and Beth Alston will play Margaretha Cerini and Charmaine Reid.

Good luck to those who are left to play in the next matches.

Social bowls winners for March 16 were J Kingma, B Hatchman, R day.

March 23 winners were J Kingma, N Harris.

On Saturday, March 26 19 bowlers played social and winners were M Griffiths, S Wills (a new bowler), L Havellberg.

There will be social bowls of a Wednesday and Saturday from now on.

Basketball finals shape up to be tough competition

By MELINDA WATSON IT was grand final week at Euroa Basketball this week, and competition was hotter than ever.

Tuesday saw the final Aussie Hoops and U12 sessions for the season and what a fantastic improvement we have seen in these players.

It was a pleasure to see their skills, understanding and confidence develop over the season. Euroa Basketball would like to thank all the players, coaches and refs that have participated.

It has been wonderful to welcome so many new players to basketball over the past season.

The under 14 grand final was a fabulous display of skill and teamwork.

It was the Blues team who prevailed over the 36ers, but not without a fight.

Jackson Walker for the Blues was awarded best on court for the night and Campbell Baker, on the 36ers team, was awarded with the most points scored for the season.

Again, we thank our coaches, parents and players for their commitment.

The under 18 competition, sponsored by VicHealth, was played in good spirits and for fun and enjoyment.

We thank our players for their commitment and we hope to see them back for next season. We have seen some excellent mentor coaches and we would like to thank them for their expertise.

CHAMPIONS: Tournament winners Gooram Gang Gangs were happy with their well-deserved win.

The ladies competition was a chance for ‘Rock up’ basketball and it was fantastic to see the ladies laugh and play, huge thanks to Fiona for all her organisation.

The men’s grand final shaped up to be a significantly competitive contest.

Gooram Gang Gangs, in their new gang gang uniform, looked the part and started the game as favourites, despite Backyard Ballers finishing the year on top of the ladder.

The Gang Gangs shot out

to a 10 nil start, and despite the Ballers coming back and shooting some great 3 point shots, the favourites never let them back in.

Final scores went in favour of Gooram, 47 to 28.

John Woodcock, poster boy for the Shepparton Gators, won the Best on Court award and Nick Spencer won the ‘Ryley Bjorksten - 3 point’ award, kindly donated by Lauren and the Bjorksten family in memory of Ryley who was a very sharp 3 point shooter at the club.

Avenel netballers take on Yea Tigers THE Avenel A grade netballers have had a great start to the 2022 season, with a successful practice match against Yea. Winning by four goals, A grade came out strong, owning every aspect of the game.

From defensive throw ins, all the way down the court the girls were strong, quick and controlled.

We saw some monster intercepts from our centre court players and defenders coupled with strong rebounding.

Our centre passes saw our attacking end absolutely dominate and our gaolers were on point with their shots, it was exciting to watch everything come together.

B grade: The A and B squad played 6x 8 minutes quarters against Yea on Saturday evening. The girls combined well together.

With many of our young Swannies who have come up from our junior grades last year acquitting themselves extremely well.

NETBALLERS OWN THE COURT: The Avenel netball teams had three stellar pre-season matches against Yea tigers.

Everyone enjoyed the hit out and are looking forward to the season ahead.

C grade: On Saturday the girls walked on court with the bare seven players.

With Yea rotating players and having fresh legs on every quarter the swans were still able to walk away with a seven goal win over

the Tigers.

It was the first game the girls had played together in a very new C grade side and I believe they have so much potential to continue to bring home the wins throughout the season. Well done girls on your efforts and for pushing yourselves to the end.

Longwood footballers take on Dunolly in final pre-season match THE Redlegs footballers had their final pre-season hit out on Saturday at Redlegs stadium against a young and fit Dunolly.

The reserves had a solid game and showed the benefits of a good pre-season to run out the game in hot weather.

With a number of players missing in both seniors and reserves, a number of under 18’s had the opportunity to step up.

Harry Shiner was solid down back with Luke Allison in the reserves side along with fellow new Under 18’s footballer Adam Walker up forward.

The senior side missing 13 from their team were always going to have to work hard to cover the losses.

A number of players were tried in several different positions and certainly gave coach Michael Galvin something to think about when selecting the side this week as they prepare to take on Violet

Town at Violet Town.

Our junior netballers played an intra club practice match also on Saturday morning.

The support shown to these girls with the involvement of many of our senior netballers was outstanding.

The girls have had a great preseason as they look to keep improving and striving for senior selection.

There are still places available for both junior footballers and netballers from 11 & under to 17 & under in the netball and Under 13’s & 18’s in the football.

The Redlegs look forward to the completion of their second netball court for their round two clash at home on Saturday, April 9.

Labour Day tennis tournament attracts 603 players

By MARK BORTHWICK OVER the Labour Day weekend tournament there were 603 players, and 53 individual events.

We had a new winner & R/ up in the men’s open with Lucas Cameron and Harry Wills, Olivia Quigley from Shepparton defended her Women’s Open title against Laura Langmead again.

Lucas Cameron is a Tennis Coach with Geelong Grammar School.

Olivia Quigley is Shepparton based and the 2020 Tennis Athlete of the Year from the Bendigo Academy of Sport.

Euroa Badminton season starts AFTER getting through almost half a season in 2021 due to Covid-19, the Euroa and District Badminton Association (EDBA) are excited to be hitting off for the 2022 season with practice/ grading nights to be held at the stadium at the Euroa Secondary College on Monday, April 4 and 25, and on Monday, May 2.

Everyone is welcome, practice to start at 7pm.

Competition is to begin on Monday, May 9 and will finish

on the Monday, September 12.

Games will commence each Monday at 7pm.

Fees have not yet been set as we are waiting to determine numbers but as always, there’ll be an early bird discount and a payment plan can be arranged.

There will also be a part rebate for anyone who played last year and paid their fee in full if they are playing this season.

We look forward to seeing everyone back and welcoming

new members.

Social hitting / junior coaching will also be available each night so if you are wanting to learn how to play, can’t commit to each night, this could be for you - $2/night per player or $5 per family.

Rachel Haslau cleans up carriage driving championships THE Longwood Carriage Driving Club members travelled to Teesdale this month to contest the 2022 Victorian Carriage Driving Championships and were victorious across a number of Championship classes.

Club President, Rachel Haslau from Longwood, blitzed the field in the Pony Pair Championship, winning all sections of the event.

Rachel has won dozens of National and State Championships, usually driving a Four - in - Hand Team of horses or ponies, and has represented Australia at the highest level in Europe.

She drove to perfection a pair of beautiful bay ponies that she has trained for Di Boardman of Skye Park Rugs, who is also a member of Longwood Carriage Driving Club.

An important part of Rachel’s success can also be contributed to fellow club member Alison McDiarmaid in the important role of groom/back - stepper.

Club Vice President, David Cockroft, was thrilled to win the Novice Horse Championship and hardworking club member Jason Mullenger also had success in the level

Longwood Club is busy preparing to host a number of exciting events during 2022.

The Ruffy Mini Enduro and Pleasure Drive will be

held at Maygar Park, Ruffy over the three days, May 7, 8 and 9 and has already attracted entries from three states.

Spectators are very welcome.

The annual Australian Carriage Driving Classic will be held at Longwood Recreation Reserve on the November 19 and 20.

This major event on the Australian Carriage Driving Calendar will be particu-

larly special this year, as we celebrate 50 years since the formation of the Australian Carriage Driving Society.

As usual the Longwood community will be actively involved with sensational catering for the hundreds of competitors, officials, supporters and spectators who will converge on Longwood, long known as the Carriage Driving Mecca of Australia, in the heart of the Horse Capital of Victoria.

Aussie Winter Olympian wins the Euroa gift OVER 400 competitors entered the 2022 Euroa gift for a stellar turnout for both competitors and spectators alike.

Not a car park was empty on the day with people coming from all over to see the star studded line-up of quality athletes.

Often numbers can be slightly on the lower side coming into Easter with the coveted Stawell gift just around the corner, but coming out of multiple Covid roadblocks the 2022 Euroa Gift was alive and well and competitors were raring to go.

Bendigo athlete Lauren Savoy took out the women’s 300m, winning her first sash in four years off a handicap of 29.

Cam Dunbar took out two sashes, an impressive feat for a masters athlete to win both the 120 masters and the 70m open, stablemate David Gill also taking out the 300 masters.

Kiara Reddingius, fresh from her trip to Beijing took out the women’s Euroa Gift in her third race back with a time of 13.783 off a handicap of five at the back marker.

The 2022 men’s Euroa Gift was won by 20 year old Sandringham man Jesse McKenna for his first ever professional sash with a time of 12.326 off a 5.75 handicap.

Longest running school rowing regatta in the world hits Nagambie

By DIANE GRANT OVER the past couple of years the Australian Public School (APS) annual regattas were cancelled or held with heavy restrictions due to the Covid 19 pandemic situation.

Luckily 2022 was different; the 154th APS was able to be held in glorious autumn flawless weather, smooth water, clear skies and a very pleasant 29 degrees around Lake Nagambie.

The Australian Public Schools of Victoria Regatta was first held in 1868 and Nagambie Rowing Club member David Andrews said “I believe it is the longest running school regatta in the world. “ The Nagambie Rowing Club played an integral part in this year’s annual rowing event.

Mr Andrews, of the Nagambie Rowing Club was able to send us some photos and information on the Saturday, March 26 major event.

David Andrews said “the Nagambie Rowing Club and volunteer supporters had a great day hosting the 154th APS Heads of the River Regatta” and that several thousand proud parents, friends and spectators lined the Regatta Centre peninsula along the rowing course, to cheer on their rowers.

“Looking down the peninsula from the Regatta Centre balcony, gave a brilliant view of colour and activity.”

Mr Andrews explained that fours (one oar, ‘slave’ rowing), quad-sculls (two smaller oars, far more civilised) and eights (more slave rowing), graced the course.

He said 1000 and 2000 metres of rowing were the order of the day, with the more junior crews rowing over the shorter distance.

“It is the last and most prestigious regatta of the school summer rowing season, and bragging rights are with the school whose top eights

win the ‘A’ final.”

Five of the schools are co-ed and promote rowing amongst all their students, thus the plural in ‘Heads’ of the River.

Each school had a marquee which was adorned with the school colours and catering was provided for the attendees.

Mr Andrews said “Some may find it a bit ‘snobby’, but I see it as a great tradition, celebration and people getting together, sharing a great time.”

“Whether you are at the local footy, cricket, netball, or bowling on the ‘green’, it is nice seeing the state opening up again and people getting out and about.”

2022 APS REGATTA RESULTS After an exciting competition of heats, finals, blood, sweat and tears, congratulations this year go to Wesley College for winning the Girls Division One ‘A’ Final and Scotch College for winning the Boys Division One ‘A’ Final. It is a long season with high demands for training and racing, so very well done to all teams.

It is fitting that The APS Heads of the River Regatta is the undercard to the Australian National Regatta, which Nagambie is also hosting this week.

The National Regatta will run continuously through to Sunday, April 3.

Locals will see many rowers, rowing officials, coaches and spectators around town and the Shire.

Mr Andrews is also one of our Strathbogie Shire Councillors, and he said “I am confident that businesses throughout the Shire will benefit from the event.”

Some 34 loaded boat trailers have already arrived from around the country, thanks to all who are supporting the championships with accommodation, volunteer support in many ways, and assisting the Nagambie Rowing Club and Rowing Australia in this week’s regatta.
