Last week’s meeting was dissolved due to there being no quorum after Cr Chris Raeburn stated he could not

support a mayoral election in the council’s current environment and walked out.

He was immediately followed out the door by Cr Sally Hayes-Burke, who said she agreed.

The dramatic development concluded what may have

been the group’s final public meeting, after this masthead reported the mayor had written to Local Government Minister Melissa Horne to request the suspension of all councillors, in response to a letter from the minister asking councillors to “show

cause” as to why they should not be suspended.

“I would like to abstain from tonight’s mayoral election,” Cr Raeburn said before the walkout.

“I’m leaving the chamber and I cannot support the appointment of a new mayor

in the current environment in Strathbogie Shire.

“In the past few weeks we have seen significant breaches in confidentiality and I do not want to waste my time or the community’s time by pretending we are functional.”

Two more executive managers leave Strathbogie Shire Council TWO members of Strathbogie Shire Council’s executive management team – chief financial officer Upul Sathurusinghe and communcations and engagement manager Kristin Favaloro – have resigned in recent weeks.

Their resignations bring the tally of executive managers to have left the council this year up to four, following the departures of people and governance director Dawn Bray and sustainable infrastructure director Vlad Adamek earlier in the year.

This year has seen the resignations of three councillors and the appointment of a second municipal monitor, while the latest two departures come as the council awaits ministerial intervention, after this masthead reported the mayor had written to Local Government Minister Melissa Horne to request the suspension of all councillors.

Strathbogie Shire Council declined to discuss why the staff had departed.

The council said David Roff would act in the chief financial officer role during the recruitment process following Mr Sathurusinghe’s resignation.

Mr Harvey will now step into the role of sustainable infrastructure director, the council has announced.

At last week’s council meeting, Mayor Laura Binks said farewell publicly to Ms Favaloro, crediting her with bringing “amazing advancements in how our community is able to engage with our shire” and praising her role in “telling [the shire’s] story”.

The council said they are in the process of appointing someone to act in Ms Favaloro’s role and would provide more information about this in the near future.

Following the resignation of Ms Bray in June, the council engaged a special governance advisor, Phillip Carruthers, for an initial six-week period.

But Mr Carruthers has stayed on, in what Strathbogie Shire Council said is an additional position engaged due to the significant governance issues facing the council.

To date, it has cost $94,536 to engage Mr Carruthers, the council has now confirmed.

Councillors share their candid thoughts Mayor y Binks tells of how she almost resigned g “manyy times”

By DARREN CHAITMAN AT last week’s council meeting, Strathbogie Shire councillors made impassioned remarks as they foreshadowed it could be their public last meeting before Local Government Minister Melissa Horne’s long-awaited intervention.

Mayor Laura Binks, Cr Chris Raeburn and Cr Sally HayesBurke delivered prepared speeches which referred to allegedly poor conduct practiced by certain councillors and serious governance problems faced by the council.

Deputy Mayor Paul Murray and Cr Robin Weatherald, on the other hand, made what appeared to be unprepared remarks, expressing a view it would be better for the shire if councillors were to continue in their roles, rather than face a ministerial intervention preventing this.

Cr Binks listed several “fantastic outcomes” the council had achieved, before discussing challenges the council had faced and revealing she had considered resigning many times.

“Our greatest challenge has been councillors understanding their role, the role of the CEO and council officers and the importance of governance and following the Local Government Act,” she said.

“We have experienced multiple code of conduct breaches and regular unacceptable behaviour towards each other, the CEO, and the council officers.

“It has been awful.

“I have almost resigned many times.

“It is only because of my continued support network that I have stayed in the position.”

Cr Binks said the council continues to face significant issues, and while she “desperately want[s] to talk about these issues”, she cannot do so because she “will not practice poor governance” by breaching confidentiality.

Council CEO Julie Salomon appeared emotional as Cr Binks went on to say that “everyone deserves better”, including the community, the CEO, council officers and councillors.

Cr Binks then addressed what she called “some recent personal attacks on my character and ability”.

“I want to say that sweeping bad behaviour under the rug would have been the easy thing to do,” she said.

“Yes, I could have put up and shut up, but I’m better than that.

“I am a young female mayor who’s not willing to put up with a disrespectful and unsafe workplace.

“I am brave enough to say that poor behaviour is not okay and to do something about it.

“I hope you can see this outcome as positive, not negative.”

Cr Hayes-Burke also listed what she saw as several of the council’s positive achievements, before discussing the council’s challenges.

She said she had felt threatened, as well as “targeted by the people who I am meant to be working with to achieve great things for our community”.

“Despite this, I have been committed to learning and good governance,” she said.

“Unfortunately, I do not believe some of my colleagues have had the same commitment.”

Cr Hayes-Burke said more needed to be done to support councillors who had not breached the code of conduct, and that “the consequences of these breaches should not disappear after resignation”.

Cr Raeburn echoed her remarks, saying local government needs change, including “greater opportunity to support those doing the right thing”.

“All a councillor has to do is resign to make the consequences of a code of conduct breach disappear,” he said.

“How is this transparent?

“How does this help council explain what’s happening behind closed doors?”

Nagambie-Locksley Road bridge to be replaced THE Nagambie-Locksley Road bridge is set to be replaced to address safety concerns including its limited load capacity and its being too narrow.

At last week’s council meeting, councillors noted that officers had issued a planning permit for vegetation removal to enable the bridge’s replacement, which will be funded by external grants.

The road is a school bus route and hosts heavy vehicle traffic, according to the council report.

commissioned by council proposed the removal of 11 large trees and seven scattered small trees, to make way for the bridge’s replacement.

Cr Sally Hayes-Burke was the only councillor to vote against the motion.

“I cannot understand how we are not looking at other ways to make our roads safe – I agree safety is essential, but there are other ways… [including] the installation of barriers, and I believe the cost of installing barriers should be costed into the road

design,” she said.

Deputy Mayor Paul Murray voted “reluctantly” in favour of the motion, saying he had struggled with the decision.

Cr Robin Weatherald said when this first came up, he was “horrified”, but he had been assured by council officers that due care was taken to only remove trees where necessary.

Cr Chris Raeburn said DEECA had gone through the proposal with a “fine tooth comb” and the loss of trees was very minimal.

“I intend to keep working on that assumption that the democratic right of people to be represented in local government is important and vital, and I hope the minister sees that as an important thing to hold onto,” he said.

“I believe that our current set of councillors can operate together for the future.

“I see great hope for us moving forward – I’m not of the view, unlike some that are [less] sanguine about the future, I see it as more hard work ahead but achievable in the future.”

Cr Weatherald also shared a more optimistic view of the future.

“As a councillor, I am fit and able to carry on serving this community,” he said.

“I’m not tired, I’m not worn out and I’m not frustrated.

“I believe local government has been poorly dealt with here.

“But it’s important to have faith that this shire will not sink.”

Hayes-Burke and Raeburn say councillors avoid accountability by resigning

By DARREN CHAITMAN CR Sally Hayes-Burke and Cr Chris Raeburn used speeches at last week’s council meeting to call for legal reforms that would allow councils to more easily publish findings of councillor misconduct.

Cr Raeburn described a situation where “all a councillor has to do is resign to make the consequences of a code of conduct breach disappear”.

Hunt & Hunt Lawyers managing principal Tony Raunic said Cr Hayes-Burke and Cr Raeburn were referring to a common situation in which councillors resign after having been the subject of an arbitration process, to avoid the consequences of having been found to have breached their council’s code of conduct.

“What Cr Hayes-Burke and Cr Raeburn are saying is correct, that currently a failing of the system is that if someone who is a sitting councillor is subject to one of these complaints or processes resigns, then there’s no standing to pursue them anymore because they’re not subject to the code of conduct as a former councillor,” he said.

“There doesn’t appear to be a process where we know they’re not a councillor, but we’re saying that they did the wrong thing while they were a councillor,” Mr Raunic continued.

The Euroa Gazette understands there has been at least one internal arbitration case during the current term of Strathbogie Shire Council.

The council received an internal arbitration report following an investigation of whether a former councillor behaved disrespectfully towards a senior council officer in an incident earlier this year.

The councillor subject to the investigation has since resigned.

Mr Raunic explained that either an internal arbitration process, or an external arbitration process overseen by a government-appointed panel, may apply if a councillor breaches their council’s code of conduct.

He said the external arbitration process is used for serious breaches including bullying, as well as cases in which the matter cannot be resolved after attempting internal arbitration.

No findings of internal arbitrations or external arbitrations concerning Strathbogie Shire Council have been published on the Local Government Victoria website.

Mr Raunic said some councils publish the findings of internal arbitrations even after a councillor resigns, but other councils may feel “hamstrung in publishing a decision about, or broadcasting its internal processes about a councillor who has now departed”.

“And that would be be-

cause presumably their code of conduct prohibits publication of that information,” he said.

“In relation to that initial internal attempt to resolve matters and when councillors choose to resign as a result of that process, then the public don’t necessarily find out easily what the problematic behaviours were.

“It’s typically only where the matter is escalated to an external determination through the principal councillor conduct registrar [a local government body] that we get to know about these decisions.”

Mr Raunic said he is interested to see whether a uniform code of conduct for Victorian councils – a reform flagged by Local Government Minister Melissa Horne earlier this month – will include a provision to allow that the consequences of code of conduct violations will be still enforceable after a councillor resigns.

At last week’s council meeting, Cr Raeburn said “any councillor who resigns to get out of a breach of conduct is irresponsible and unrespectful [sic] for its community”.

“We have had almost 30 code of conduct breaches – the details of which are confidential and I am not allowed to say,” he said.

“So, without understanding or information, we have a community rightly questioning where the problem is.”

MEMBER for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes last week announced that Crow Constructions has been appointed to construct the new, multi-million-dollar Euroa Ambulance Station.

She met with Euroa Health CEO Melissa Seymour and Euroa Health chair Linsey Siede, as well as Ambulance Victoria and Crow Constructions representatives, in Euroa last week for the announcement.

“This project is delivering a modern and advanced ambulance station for Euroa that will enable local paramedics to provide the best lifesaving emergency care, now and into the future,” Ms Symes said.

The State Government said construction for the new station on Weir Street, located adjacent to Euroa Health, is on track to start later this year and be completed in 2024.

“As a result, the strategy must ensure it meets the needs of the growing community.

“The strategy identifies and assess future land uses to meet growth and demand

for housing, jobs, and services to insure coordinated growth into the future.

“We’ve heard about important matters affecting Avenel residents and their future throughout the engagement process and need to balance residential growth while protecting the township’s unique historical character.”

Designed with a three-bay garage for ambulances, the purpose-built facility will be better equipped to meet the needs of the Euroa ambulance branch, which moved from single to dual paramedic crewing in October last year.

The new station will also feature training facilities, a fully equipped kitchen, two rest areas and long-term accommodation facilities.

It is one of 15 new stations currently being built in Victoria.

The State Government said they had invested $279 million since 2015 to deliver 49 ambulance stations, providing better working conditions for paramedics and ensuring lifesaving emergency care is available for all Victorians.

“Local paramedics need modern workplaces and the latest equipment to stay safe at work and deliver the best care - and that’s exactly what we’re delivering in Euroa,” Minister for Health Infrastructure and Ambulance Services Mary-Anne Thomas said.

Gazette takes home Best Advertising Feature award THE Euroa Gazette was awarded Best Advertising Feature in the under 2000 circulation category at this year’s Victorian Country Press Association awards.

This masthead’s winning entry was our “Celebrating 125 years” special lift-out printed last year, which looked back on 125 years of The Euroa Gazette’s history.

North East Media CEO Edward Higgins, who attended the award ceremony earlier this month, said The Euroa Gazette advertising accounts manager Lorraine Millard, along with other members of the team, “should be very proud of this result”.

Judges called the feature “well presented and well researched”.

“It’s not often that the newspaper itself gets to be the main attraction for advertisers, mostly it’s the vehicle,” judges said.

“In the case of the 125th anniversary feature for The Euroa Gazette, it is the history of the paper and its future direction that is the reason to celebrate.

“The supporting advertisers made reference to the subject

over 100 years of stories, seeing how the town’s changed and how the newspaper has changed,” he recalled.

“And talking to people that have kind of been there along the journey – past owners, past journos – going through the history of it was really interesting.”

But he said all the credit belonged to Ms Millard.

“Lorraine put in a lot of work and because it’s an advertising

award, I think it’s really her domain, her wheelhouse,” he said.

I think it’s a fitting reward for something that was a lot of effort and ended up with a great finished product.”

Mr Ridder also remembered the feature received a great response from the community.

“As soon as we released it, we had people coming into the office for weeks straight, wanting to get a copy or give it to an older family member or friend,” he said.

“It was great seeing the whole community get around it.”

Another North East Media newspaper, the Wangaratta Chronicle, took out three awards at this year’s Victorian Country Press Association awards ceremony in the 2000-6000 circulation category.

The Chronicle won the Overall Newspaper Excellence, Best Sports Photo, and Best News Story awards.

Health tax targets all of us A NEW tax on our GPs has now been introduced that will have huge ramifications on an already struggling healthcare system – and the cost will be passed onto the locals who can least afford it.

This health tax will impact the viability of medical clinics for what is just a desperate and callous cash grab by a government that is broke, and it will have huge ramifications for our health system.

I have been working closely with the Shadow Minister for Health, Georgie Crozier, to put an end to this issue which is unfairly targeting our regional health services.

Together, we have met

with several GPs across the region, introduced legislation to reverse the unfair health tax, and tabled a petition with parliament.

After listening to their concerns, it is clear that most clinics will struggle with this new health tax, and some will even be forced to shut completely.

As usual, the Allan Labor government cannot manage a project, it can’t manage money, and it is now using our health services as collateral.

Labor’s financial mismanagement is passing it’s debt onto patients – if there’s even any doctors left to see them.

What could be worse when the nation is facing a cost-ofliving crisis already?

Drive-through KFC proposed for Euroa Service Station

By DARREN CHAITMAN A DRIVE-THROUGH KFC restaurant could be coming to the Euroa Service Station next year if a planning application received by Strathbogie Shire Council is approved.

Euroa Service Centre owner Michael Roth said his company Mircorp Property Group plans to build the restaurant with the Retzos Group, who will own the franchise.

Mr Roth said subject to the council’s approval, the plan is to build a KFC where there is an empty grass field adjacent to the McDonalds at the Euroa Service Centre.

He hopes to see the drivethrough restaurant, along

with 50-60 new parking spaces, built by November 2024.

“As soon as that planning permit is stamped, we start doing works on the land,” Mr Roth said.

“It’s good for the town, it’s good for employment, for bringing revenue to the town through rates.

“It’ll add a nice feel to the town… I’m very excited about it.

“We’ve done this project for five years to get Retzos to agree.”

Mr Roth lives in Melbourne, but said he is “part of the Euroa scene these days”.

The planning application, with works costed at $3 million, was one of 14 application receipts noted at this month’s council meeting.

weighed in on the prospect of Colonel Sanders’ famous fried chicken coming to town.

“Whether a KFC comes to the service centre out there is out of our control, but if that does happen, we would like to encourage people to continue to support our independent small local businesses,” she said.

Mr Roth said other changes are also afoot at the Euroa

Service Station, including a refurbishment of the main food hall and upgrading of the toilet facilities, while Viva Energy is planning to rebrand the Coles Express store.

He said Mircorp is also “in discussions with a very large operator” to develop a solar farm on four acres of vacant land owned by the group.

Mayoral election quashed as councillors stage walkout ■ From page 1

He quickly picked up his bags and left the room before Cr Hayes-Burke said, “I also feel the same as Cr Raeburn, so I’ll be leaving the chamber,” and followed him out the door.

Council officers and councillors appeared taken aback, as Mayor Laura Binks sought advice from special governance advisor Phillip Carruthers about how to proceed.

Mr Carruthers explained the meeting had lapsed without a quorum, and the mayor was now required to reconvene another meeting to hold the mayoral election, giving the community seven days’ notice.

Speaking to The Euroa Gazette after the meeting, Cr Binks said she was surprised by the walkouts and was “still processing it”.

“I’ve never experienced this before, so I’m just trying to work it out,” she said.

She said she had not intended to renominate as mayor.

“I’ve done two terms and I’m sufficiently exhausted and satisfied,” she said.

Deputy Mayor Paul Murray and Cr Robin Weatherald both said they had intended to put themselves forward as mayoral candidates.

Cr Murray said the walk-outs seemed to be “a very disappointing way of behaving”.

“Some of the behaviours exhibited there were not the standard that the council would like it to be,” he said.

“We passed the mutual respect charter [earlier in the meeting] and I think part of that ought to be allowing good governance to occur and the council to operate as it should, rather than undermining its ability to operate by walking out… to function as it democratically ought to be able to, to make decisions on behalf of our ratepayers.”

own views and they were not necessarily representative of the council.

This term of council has seen the appointment of two municipal monitors and the resignations of four councillors.

Minister Horne cited concerns regarding poor governance and conduct when she appointed a second municipal monitor to the council in May, but specific incidents demonstrating these concerns have not yet been made public due to confidentiality.

Cr Murray said he had shared his intention to nominate as mayor with Cr Binks and Cr Weatherald prior to the meeting, and he believed Cr Raeburn and Cr Hayes-Burke knew his intention.

Cr Hayes-Burke had also been considering nominating for mayor, according to Cr Murray’s understanding.

At the meeting, shortly after the walkouts, Cr Weatherald said he believed it was a “political tactic”.

The Euroa Gazette later asked him to elaborate.

“If an election was to take place, it would then allow a new mayor to negotiate with the minister about

the saving of the shire,” Cr Weatherald said.

“That was what the whole exercise was about – there was no way [they were] going to let anybody else be authorised to talk to the minister.”

He claimed Cr Raeburn and Cr Hayes-Burke had supported Cr Binks’ letter that asked for all councillors to be suspended, while he and Cr Murray had not supported the letter.

Cr Murray declined to comment on this matter, citing confidentiality.

Cr Raeburn and Cr Hayes-Burke were contacted for comment.

Cr Weatherald said he believed Cr Binks, Cr Raeburn and Cr HayesBurke were “closely aligned”.

Cr Murray said these three councillors were not a “defined group” but “their interests align reasonably often”.

“In any group, there are sort of subgroups that occur, and I suppose they share some common interests, as I share with them from time to time,” he said.

Hunt & Hunt Lawyers managing principal Tony Raunic – a former

Shire of Nillumbik mayor who now specialises in local government law – echoed Cr Murray’s view of the walkouts.

“I think the minister will see the failure to maintain a quorum at the recent meeting as more evidence of dysfunctionality,” he told The Euroa Gazette.

“I don’t like the use of meeting procedure in this way to avoid a decision.

“It’s all very well to say, ‘I don’t think the environment’s right for the appointment of a mayor at the moment’, but the likelihood would be that decisions like that to walk out of a meeting wouldn’t have been made if the councillors in question had the numbers to get their choice of mayor up.

“And it’s not an approach I think the public would generally find acceptable – I think they would want to see matters debated fully at council and the democratic process taken.”

A new council meeting to hold the mayoral election was to take place yesterday at 2pm at the Euroa Community Conference Centre.

“I do not know of any other intact Gospel Oak iron roof,” University of Melbourne professor Miles Lewis wrote in a letter supporting the submission.

On Sunday, EuroaConnect members and other community members gathered outside the goods shed to post printed copies of the interim protection order on the fencing surrounding the shed, which had been installed by the ARTC in July at the time they announced they would remove the structure.

“There was a very strong case and that’s why we’re confident that not only will it be an interim order, but that we’ll be able to have it sustained as a permanent heritage order,” Mr Simpson told the gathered crowd.

Mr Cumming, who had been instrumental in identifying the rare Gospel Oak corrugated iron, also addressed the crowd. “ I get mad when I hear about heritage getting wrecked, and I’ve been watching this shed since about 1967 when we

COMMUNITY members who have advocated for the 150-yearold Euroa Goods Shed to be saved from demolition are celebrating after Heritage Council Victoria issued an interim protection order to protect the shed.

EuroaConnect – a community group that advocates on matters relating to the development of Euroa’s future railway precinct – has led a campaign to save the shed after ARTC Inland Rail announced in July their intention to remove the shed.

“I think it’s a big step forward, but it’s by no means the end of the fight, because of course what we’ve got to do now is turn an interim protection order into permanent heritage registration,” EuroaConnect president John Simpson said.

“And then of course the community has the big challenge of turning the goods shed into something that is a real focal point for the community.”

Heritage Council of Victoria chair Professor Philip Goad issued the interim protection order on Friday last week after receiving a submission from EuroaConnect outlining a case for the goods shed’s inclusion on the heritage register.

The heritage council must now decide within 60 days whether to include the shed permanently in the heritage register.

An ARTC Inland Rail spokesperson said the ARTC has received the interim protection order and is currently reviewing it.

EuroaConnect’s submission to Heritage Victoria, prepared

by Jim Shovelton and Bruce Cumming, describes the shed’s importance to the course of Victorian history and the rarity of the materials that comprise the structure.

“When I heard there was some chance of it being lost, I thought, ‘nah, I’ve seen this before’ – the same thing happened in Violet Town, we lost our shed.

“The Southern Aurora project, which you probably know that I’ve been involved in for a long time – if we had that shed, we could have used that as part of the precinct.”

EuroaConnect member Shirley Saywell encouraged the crowd to not become complacent and to “be relentless” in expressing their views to the ARTC. EuroaConnect member Kate Auty told the crowd that the work of Mr Shovelton, Mr Cumming and others had been probono, saying “this isn’t being

funded by an elite”.

The ARTC has said the goods shed needs to be removed because the relocated station platform will encroach on it.

The ARTC commissioned engineering firm Sterling to assess the safety of the shed, who recommended the shed by removed within five months (from August) because it posed a safety risk.

A report by Sterling stated there is “a risk of The Shed collapsing onto the adjacent train line” in heavy wind and there is also “an unacceptably high risk of injury to anyone accessing the building” due to the structure’s defects.

EuroaConnect members have stated other engineers have said the structure is sound and only requires repairs.

The Lord has made known what matters most. (Heb.11:6) “Without faith it is impossible to please God”. Matt 19:16-30 tells the story of a rich, young ruler (Matt.19:16-30) who speaks with Jesus, proudly declaring he’d kept all rules! When Jesus suggests giving away his wealth before following Him, he wouldn’t, showing that_ love of money was still his god. We’ve all placed people and things before God, living life our way not His; then suffering the consequences of mistakes through not first seeking His wisdom. (Jer.29:13) God exists. Despite the vast body of scientific evidence for Intelligent Design, especially the complexity of human bodies, with inbuilt, self-healing mechanisms, people don’t or won’t think twice, about how or why these qualities would also be present. (immune systems/bone healing/brain plasticity etc) The chaos of evolutionary theory offers no rational reason, as to how or why sophisticated self-healing processes are present for our future health? God Grace is the answer.

There’s a common assumption, that we can ‘earn’ Heavens’ credit, (Ephes.2:8-9) when we die, through living a ‘good’ life, even if we’ve always ignored God Himself. However, no-one can boast, for it is by Gods’ Grace alone that we are saved. The Father asked His only begotten Son, to go through hell_to pay the high ransom-price, required to erase the penalty of human death for sin once and for all.

Jesus gave His everything, out of love for all. (Isaiah 53, 1 Peter 2:24) Heaven is a Holy place before it’s a happy place. There’s no hint of sin there, the antithesis of Gods’ nature, Who loves the sinner but abhors sin.

(Prov. 16; 16-19) Heaven, is prepared for forgiven souls, cleansed and made holy through accepting Jesus Christs’ sacrifice. Therefore, our most important decision is: What do we do with Jesus? Jesus Himself said, “You are either for Me or against Me”. (Matt.12:30) “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world; this is the victory that has overcome the world _our Faith. Who is it that overcomes the world, except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?. (1 John 5:4-5) These are timely days for considering what you believe and acting upon it, as follows; “For it is with your heart you believe and are justified; (Rom.10:910) and with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

Euroa’s Birkett Street crossing to be upgraded ARTC to upgrade pg detour route ahead of overpass p removal

By DARREN CHAITMAN EUROA’S Birkett Street level crossing will be upgraded by ARTC Inland Rail.

An ARTC Inland Rail spokesperson said the crossing will be upgraded to better manage the detoured traffic flow when the Anderson Street Bridge is closed.

Traffic through Birkett Street and Campbell Street is expected to increase as drivers use the route as a detour when the Anderson Street underpass is being constructed.

“The details of the upgrade works required will be determined once a construction contractor is appointed for the Euroa Railway precinct works,” the spokesperson said.

The ARTC expects to appoint a construction contractor for the Euroa railway station precinct in mid-2024 and to begin construction in 2025.

The Birkett Street crossing has been the site of a number of car crashes, including a collision between a train and a car last month.

Counting the future benefits for orchards ORCHARD researchers are continuing to find new applications for an Agtech device called a “Cartographer” at Agriculture Victoria’s Tatura SmartFarm.

Cartographer – invented by AgTech firm Green Atlas – is mounted on an electric all-terrainvehicle at the farm and uses a combination of cameras, scanner, strobe lighting and GPS to capture flower, fruit and canopy data from tree crops.

Agriculture Victoria research leader for crop physiology Dr Ian Goodwin said the cartographer was originally trialled in a 2020–2022 research project exploring the use of sensors to assess fruit quality of peach, nectarine, plum and apricot for export.

“The Cartographer can travel along orchard rows capturing data from both sides of the row at up to 10kph, making it much quicker and more accurate than manual methods and less labour intensive,” Dr Goodwin said.

“It uses artificial intelligence to

identify, count and measure fruit traits from its cameras such as fruit size and colour to help us calculate potential harvest yields.

“The Cartographer has become a very handy scientific instrument for us that can rapidly analyse an entire orchard block, so we are now using it in wide range of orchard research.

“It’s been used for stone fruit, apple and pear research and we’re now studying its economic value for growers as an orchard management tool.

“We manually calibrate the Cartographer for accurate fruit counts, but otherwise its entirely machine-driven data capture for fruit size, fruit colour and canopy size so the labour-save and return on investment would be of interest to producers.”

Mildura SmartFarm has also purchased a Cartographer to help researchers analyse quality and production within its almond experimental orchard and potentially in citrus and olive groves.

Not only is the weed invasive, but it contains a deadly poison, carboxyparquin, which is toxic to people, pets, livestock and native animals.

GREEN Cestrum is a poisonous weed that has been causing havoc in parts of Australia for 150 years.

Imported from South America in the 1870s by some enthusiastic gardeners, the plant has since spread through eastern and southern Australia.

Particularly favouring

All parts of the plant are poisonous, especially the berries, and it continues to be poisonous even after it has been cut down and sprayed.

For this reason, it is necessary to keep stock out of the area where the weed is being treated until the plant matter has completely disintegrated.

Solar and wind outpaces household electricity needs SOLAR and wind energy supply has exceeded household electricity use for the first time in 2021-22 according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

“Continued growth in solar and wind production means that, for the first time, the output of electricity from these sectors was greater than total household demand in the same period of time,” ABS head of environment statistics Luisa Ryan said.

While some longer-term

patterns have continued there are also some emerging behaviours.

“Less energy use in manufacturing continues a longerterm pattern of reduced energy consumption,” Ms Ryan said.

“Meanwhile household energy has continued to fall since its peak in 2016-17.

“In 2021-22 Household energy use dropped due to lower petrol and diesel consumption.”

The transport industry saw

the largest increase of any industry as air travel continued its resumption after the withdrawal of COVID-19 restrictions.

Energy exports of black coal fell 1.3 per cent in 2021-22.

This was offset by an increase in Liquified Natural Gas exports, up 7.5 per cent.

Council receives $50,000 grant to enhance tourism GOULBURN Valley’s tourism industry has been given a boost, with a $50,000 grant from the State Government given to Strathbogie Shire Council to develop innovative ways to encourage people to stay longer and experience the best of the region.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced the grant under stream A of the visitor servicing fund.

“Congratulations to Strathbogie Shire Council for securing this grant that will help visitors experience all that the Goulburn Valley region has to offer,” Ms Symes said.

“The fund will help to connect visitors to the Goulburn Valley to attractions, local businesses and encouraging them to spend more and stay longer by providing high-quality, personalised and timely information about what to see and do around Victoria.”

The grant will enable the Strathbogie Shire to deliver the Goulburn region visitor servicing strategy, which will see the development of a common visitor services strategy that will align all online information and in person visitor information centre to provide a seamless visitor experience across the Goulburn region.

The fund will help set our tourism industry up to connect with new technologies to improve how visitors can plan ahead and create the trip of a lifetime in regional Victoria.

Stream A of the program has provided grants of up to $50,000 to nine regional tourism boards and local councils like Strathbogie Shire Council, supporting the development and coordination of new and better ways to access tourism information to get around our regions.

Stream B of the program has provided grants of up to

$625,000 to four regional tourism boards, local councils and other tourism organisations to develop innovative tools and ideas so that visitors to easily book and plan visits, access information and connect with our state’s best tourism experiences.

Projects include improving ways to make bookings and reservations, building online itin-

eraries, creating digital visitor kiosks and enhancing wayfinding and storytelling at key visitation sites.

The visitor servicing fund was a commitment of the $633 million visitor economy recovery reform plan.

Creedence Clearwater Survival fundraiser concert to raise cash for Friendlies Oval upgrade

This project, when completed, will provide a safer walking track, better drainage and beautification of the area immediately in front of the clubhouse.

But no – Creedence Clearwater Survival is a Victorian rock band dedicated to the performance of its namesake Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Council officers inspecting properties for compliance as fire danger period begins FOLLOWING the beginning of the fire danger period on Monday, Strathbogie Shire Council has reminded residents of fire restrictions.

Mayor Laura Binks said the community was very switched on when it came to fire prevention and reduction, and most people had already begun cutting, mowing and clearing.

“Being ready for the worst is about good preparation and having a plan – so if you haven’t started, now is definitely the time to get your

property ready and have an emergency plan for you, your family and animals,” she said.

“If you see a property in need of attention or you just can’t do it yourself, please contact the council as soon as possible.”

Council officers have been inspecting again since Monday, and anybody who fails to meet basic fuel reduction standards for their property after the second inspection will receive a fire prevention notice requiring immediate attention to reduce fire risk

at the property.

Failure to act after a fire prevention notice leads to an infringement notice and a fine of $1923.

Council will also engage contractors to do the work and landowners or occupiers will need to pay the cost.

Check the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au for the most up-to-date information regarding the fire season.

LAST week’s council meeting got off to an unusual start when Cr Robin Weatherald challenged the validity Mayor Laura Binks’ mayoral term – a dispute that later continued on ABC Shepparton’s Breakfast program.

On the radio show last week, following an earlier interview with the mayor, the controversial councillor blamed the council’s recent issues on “bad leadership”.

“It gets back to the current mayor and her failure to manage the council in a responsible grown-up manner, and not act like a schoolgirl,” Cr Weatherald told Breakfast presenter Nic Healey.

Cr Binks was invited onto the program again the next day to respond to Cr Weatherald’s low blow.

“I would say that I would respectfully address my fellow councillors and I don’t make disparaging remarks on radio or other places, and it’s pretty disappointing that my fellow councillors have not always done the same for me,” Cr Binks told Mr Healey.

Asked if she felt this was indicative of the council’s recent inability to function, she responded, “absolutely”.

“We’ve seen continual breaches of the Strathbogie Shire councillor code of conduct, our media policy, the Local Government Act, as well as our statement of intent and extended 10-point plan – our working document on how we were going to behave and operate as councillors,” she said.

Mr Healey told The Euroa Gazette he felt it was important to invite Cr Binks onto the program again to allow her a “right of reply” after Cr Weatherald’s criticism.

This followed an earlier episode at last week’s council meeting, in which Cr Weatherald raised a point of order before the meeting began, arguing the mayor should not chair the meeting because her 12-month term expired on November 8.

“In this case, there has been a deliberate extension of the term and I think it is unsustainable that you are in the chair now, because you are back to the rank of councillor and not mayor,” Cr Weatherald said.

Cr Binks asked special governance advisor Phillip Carruthers to clarify the term of mayor as given in the Local Government Act 2020.

Mr Carruthers advised the mayor’s term had not expired, as the act allows the term to extend beyond the precise one-year period.

He said many councils conduct their mayoral election at their normally scheduled monthly council meet-

ing, as the council planned to on this occasion.

Cr Binks overruled Cr Weatherald’s point of order based on this advice.

But Cr Weatherald continued to pursue the point, putting forward a motion to “dissent” from this ruling.

The motion was eventually seconded by Deputy Mayor Murray, who said he seconded the motion “so we can hear both sides of the decision”.

He then took the chair of mayor while Cr Weatherald and Cr Binks put forward their arguments.

All councillors, other than Cr Weatherald himself, voted against Cr Weatherald’s motion to dissent, and Cr Murray declared the motion lost.

The scene lasted about 20 minutes, before Cr Binks was able to give her introductory remarks to open the meeting.

Later in the meeting, Cr Weatherald proposed minor amendments to almost all recommendations given by council officers, drawing out the length of the meeting to almost four hours before it was cut short by Cr HayesBurke and Cr Raeburn walking out.

Southern Aurora Memorial the runnerup in national wellbeing award Violet Town project supports people affected by 1969 train crash disaster

By BRUCE CUMMING THE Southern Aurora Committee is very proud and honoured to have gained national recognition last week.

Just last month in October we won the Mental Health and Wellbeing Award at the state level, and following that we were excited to be nominated finalists at the national level.

The Resilience Australia Awards, known as RAA23, were announced at Subiaco in Western Australia.

We were honoured to be runners-up, and congratulate Community Shedding Inc who won the top Australian award for mental health and wellbeing.

Their amazing project focuses on post-flood recovery for communities dealing with the many difficult impacts on communities of flood events.

One of the families on board the southern Aurora was the Collier family from Western Australia.

I personally wish to thank Peter Collier MLC who attended the awards ceremony to represent not only the Southern Aurora Memorial Committee, but also his own family.

He was on board at the time of the crash as a boy, with his sister, mother and father.

After he had helped rescue people from the wreckage Mr Collier then

took amazing photos, one of which is shown here.

The photos show Marea Curtis and Phyllis Cutts assisting the injured, despite the fact that they both were also injured.

The award is for people like those two generous women, and Mr Collier senior, who thought of others.

The Southern Aurora project at Violet Town is multi-faceted in its activities, but its underlying purpose is to support people affected by the Aurora disaster in 1969.

By building a memorial garden and engaging with visitors we are subtly telling true local history while supporting people.

The focus is on recognising the hundreds of people who helped hundreds of strangers that day, and in many cases supported them for a long time afterwards.

At the time of the incident nine people died, and the official injured list was 117, of a total of 220 people, both passengers and railway staff.

In reality this was such a disaster that many more people were deeply traumatised: the Mental Health and Wellbeing Award is in recognition of the work that was done by local people in 1969, and today, to help people heal from what was a tragedy of national significance.

Local sporting clubs in need of investment, MP Cleeland says MEMBER for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has called on the State Government to support sporting clubs in the region by investing in crucial infrastructure upgrades.

Ms Cleeland has written to the Treasurer and the Minister for Community Sport on behalf of the region’s sporting clubs, asking that they be considered for funding opportunities as part of the $60 million Regional Community Sport Development Fund.

The fund was established to deliver projects in regional towns following the State Government’s failure to deliver the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“Sporting clubs are the lifeblood of our regional towns, and it has been so

disheartening to see them ignored by this government for so long,” Ms Cleeland said.

“While the cancellation of the Commonwealth Games was a slap in the face for regional communities across the state, this government now has a chance to show some support for our local sports clubs.”

Local sporting clubs like Longwood Football Netball Club, Seymour Football Netball Club, Rushworth Bowls Club, and the Murchison-Toolamba Football Netball Club are some of the local organisations that have been campaigning for much-needed upgrades to their facilities.

“Despite these clubs being previously overlooked

at the state budget and numerous other opportunities, they have been incredibly determined in pushing to get these upgrades underway,” Ms Cleeland said.

“So many of our clubs are in desperate need of new and fit-for-purpose equipment, as well as amenities that can best serve the community.

“Clubs like the Redlegs in Longwood have been relentlessly pushing for vital upgrades to their facilities, particularly to add female changerooms to deal with their growing netball program.

“Our local sports clubs are providing people with a strong sense of community, belonging, and an active lifestyle, and deserve all the support they can get.”

St Malachy’s church celebrates 150 years in Nagambie One of Nagambie’s g oldest buildings g still thrives

By DIANE GRANT IN 1868, the Nagambie township was government gazetted.

Farm selections began in the 1860s.

Within ten years Nagambie had a school, a Catholic church, a Mechanics Institute and two flour mills.

There were 76 buildings in the township in 1877.

One of those historic buildings, St Malachy’s Catholic Church celebrated its 150 years of faithful service to the Nagambie and district community on Sunday, November 19 with a celebration mass led by the Most Reverend Bishop Shane Mackinlay of the Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst.

Bishop Shane arrived at St Malachy’s on the beautiful, sunny spring Sunday morning and was assisted on the day by seven fellow clergy.

Young Mikaela Robinson Semi Crucifer, two twin girls Janelle and Jazelle Etuale (acolytes), and Semi Legalo (altar server), led the procession into the church for the celebration service.

It was marvellous to see members from other churches in the district at the celebratory service and those from the community who have been associated with St Malachy’s over the years.

Monsignor Frank Marriott, former at the church and Monsignor Frank Hickey local retired priest were also in attendance at the celebration service.

The spirits of the congrega-

tion were lifted as they sang the hymns of praise and the sung Eucharist and heard the prayers of thanksgiving for their faithful service to God and the community by those at St Malachy’s, the local town and district folk.

The bishop’s sermon was relevant for the occasion, and he left everyone remembering what he had said that impressed so many at the service.

Following the 150th mass, a plaque was mounted on the outside eastern wall of the church, and Bishop Mackinlay blessed it and the people in honour of the 150th celebrations.

The bishop, clergy and congregation were escorted to the old Catholic presbytery building next door that is now the Nagambie Lakes Community House’s home.

It had been renovated by the presbytery restoration

committee over many years and was officially named The Kearns Centre by the bishop, where he blessed the plaque and cut the commemorative green ribbon placed there to celebrate the faithful service to God and the community by the first priest Fr Kearns, and other Catholic priests who had lived there for over 120 odd years and served at St Malachy’s, the convent, and the local school and the community.

Father Tony Hill was the parish priest for 16 years of

St Malachy’s in Nagambie and St Mary’s at Avenel as well as Euroa, Violet Town and Longwood church centres.

From this November he is now the priest in charge of Euroa, Longwood and Violet Town parish.

Rogationist parish priest of Nagambie (and Shepparton South), Fr Rene Ramirez, will be the new priest at St Malachy’s from now on and is looking forward to meeting parishioners, St Joseph’s school and the wider members of the community.

St Malachy ladies Rhonda Robinson and Mel Arnold compiled and wrote a small booklet on The Story of St Malachy’s Parish.

It was available for purchase on the day.

A delicious lunch was served in St Joseph’s school room during which three senior parishioners Eileen McDonald, Julie Baldwin and Jenny Finnigan had the honour of cutting the 150th celebration cake.

Congratulations to the members of the St Malachy’s 150th celebration committee and all those involved in making the church’s 150th celebrations memorable.

Nagambie Mechanics Institute celebrated its 150 milestone

By DIANE GRANT AUSTRALIANS are not always good at celebrating momentous times or milestones in their community history.

The Nagambie Mechanics Institute (NMI) building in High Street Nagambie was built 150 years ago and opened before Christmas in 1873.

The NMI formed a 150th committee to plan an event to commemorate the importance the NMI has been to the Nagambie and district community.

To make people aware of this momentous occasion the NMI held a successful 150 Re-Creation Ball on Saturday, November 25 in the renovated hall.

Some 80 guests dressed up in fine fare to celebrate the 150th in style.

Strands of small fairy lights, ornate lamps, and flashing lights from the entertainers set up provided a feeling of being at an old time ball.

Trevor Dennis provided the dance music and easy to listen to songs of bygone and current eras.

The institute has been a centre for a wide variety of activities.

To name just a few, it has hosted movie, weddings,

concerts, model car shows, quilt fairs, soirees, dances, balls, table tennis nights, high teas, fashion parades, school events, ANZAC Day and remembrance services, funerals, memorials and birthday parties.

It has been Nagambie’s community hall for decades.

Over the years, major ren-

ovation works have maintained the inside and outside of the building and this allows the op shop to operate in stunning premises thanks to the involvement and the hard work of volunteers.

Some more major renovations need to be implemented: changing the windows and upgrading the kitchen so that more community events can be held.

The ball was another way the committee and volunteers could raise necessary funds for future needs of the NMI like renovating/upgrading the kitchen, changing the front windows and other ideas.

NMI committee members, opportunity shop ladies and volunteers provided a hot supper for ball guests and they were thanked by NMI president Hugh Lawrence, along with sponsors, Trevor Dennis, Peter Branagan and all those who supported the evening’s social night.

Congratulations to the Nagambie Mechanics Institute group for commemorating one of the best historic buildings in Nagambie to celebrate its 150 years of service to the community.

SIXTEEN DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE: The Anglican Church Australia and many communities are acknowledging the 16 Days of Activism against gender based violence.

Council’s advocacy campaign for Kirwans Bridge funding STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is urging people from near and far to show their support for Kirwans Bridge by uploading a video, picture, or written message to a digital wall of supporters.

Launched last week at www. share.strathbogie.vic.gov.au, people are being encouraged to use the platform to explain why Kirwans Bridge is important to them.

Mayor Laura Binks, said the digital wall of support would then be sent to potential

funders to show how important the bridge was to the Kirwans Bridge community and further afield.

“Strathbogie Shire Council is committed to a long-term sustainable future for Kirwans Bridge,” Cr Binks said.

“All we need now is the funding, so we are doing everything we can to send a message to the Victorian and Australian governments that cannot be ignored.”

Council’s Kirwans Bridge Community Panel has en-

dorsed two options for the bridge’s future.

One option (option 2.1) would maintain the existing single lane bridge, adding new steel girders and new timber decking.

According to engineering firm JJ Ryan, this would give the bridge a 25-year lifespan and would cost approximately $5.5 million plus GST. Another option (option 2.2) would replace the timber decking with concrete deck slab.

JJ Ryan estimate this would

give the bridge a 50-year lifespan and would cost about $6.5 million.

The council recently held an advocacy workshop for community members to brainstorm ideas for advocating for government funding to rehabilitate the bridge.

“This is the first idea ticked off the list, but there are many more to come,” Cr Binks said.

District News LONGWOOD LOOKOUT

By LONGWOOD ACTION GROUP ON Sunday, the Longwood Action Group held a working bee around town.

The toilet block at the community centre that is used by campers was painted and fairy lights put up around town.

On this note, the action group are planning “Let’s Light up Longwood for Christmas”.

This year we would love everyone to come together in the true Christmas spirit and be part of putting some Christmas cheer in your front yard for everyone to enjoy.

On December 1, as a whole town let’s turn on the lights each night for the month of December to encourage visitors to see our beautiful town.

The next festive initiative is Grinchmas in Longwood.

Grinchmas is an annual holiday tradition inspired by Dr Seuss’s classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas that encourages readers to “grow your heart three sizes” through the celebration of family reading, giving from the heart and community spirit.

National Grinch Day, December 1, kick starts the 25 Days of Grinchmas.

During this time “Grinch & Max” will be roaming around Longwood, so be sure to keep an eye out for them both.

You can meet The Grinch & Max, in person at the many locations around Longwood as he will be popping up in 25 different locations around our awesome little town and community.

So please take a pic, take a selfie, give Max a pat and share the location so every one knows where they can be found.

The Longwood Beer, Wine and Cider Festival is on again on Saturday, February 24 at 2pm-8pm.

Relax under the gums at this outdoor, market-style festival with regional craft beer, local wine, cider and spirits.

Non-alcoholic drinks, food vendors, live music and kid’s activities are all part of this fantastic event.

Bring your chair or rug and invite the whole family.

The festival is run by a sub-committee of the Longwood Football Netball Club, with proceeds going towards projects for the club and community.

Past projects funded include a second netball court, lighting and shelter, and a festival storage container.

In 2024, all proceeds will go towards the club’s contribution to a new femalefriendly multi-use amenities building at the Longwood Recreation Reserve.

Early bird tickets may be purchased online from December 1.

Under 18s are free, but they must purchase a free ticket.

The annual Longwood Fire Brigade Christmas Party will be held Saturday December 9th from 6 pm at the CFA shed.

BBQ provided, please bring along a salad or sweet to share.

The Longwood Seniors monthly twocourse luncheon is held on the first Monday of each month at 12.30pm at the community centre.

The cost is $16 and all seniors are welcome.

In case you thought this Wayback Wednesday column was a new and innovative idea, think again.

It appears readers of this masthead 70 years ago were just as nostalgic, with an excerpt appearing of an article printed 50 years ago (120 years in our time), in a 1903 edition of The Euroa Gazette.

The 120-year-old article described a wedding between Margaret Byers and Duncan Stewart, at the Strathbogie residence of the bride’s parents.

The ceremony was performed

by Rev F Robinson of Euroa.

Frank Byers was best man and Percy Mackrell was page.

“The bride wore ivory silk voile trimmed with fagotting

and lace, and a wreath and veil, and the bridegroom’s gift a pearl brooch,” the article reads.

“Her shower bouquet was of orange blossom, roses and clematis.”

Some 50 years later, in 1953, the “happy couple celebrated 50 years of comradeship at their home in Weir Street, Euroa”, the Gazette printed.

At the November, 1953 council meeting, councillors heard details about a planned royal visit to Shepparton next year, and an invitation for Euroa councillors and citizens to participate.

An ad for Juicy Fruit chewing gum featured a mother and her daughter gardening, in what appeared to be a variation of a chewing gum ad described in this column in recent weeks, which had featured a father and son playing with a model train set.

The ad claims Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit “eases tension and strain at any time”, “sweetens the breath at all times” and that “GARDENING’S FUN”.

ON this week 70 years ago, The Euroa Gazette received a letter from a hotel in Corowa, praising the local football team.

“Much is heard of footballers misbehaving themselves on trips away, but judging by the letter received at this office from the licensees of Scott’s Hotel, Corowa, this certainly does not apply to Euroa players and supporters who recently stayed at that hotel,” an article in the November 25, 1953 edition of this masthead reads.

The remainder of the article is a reproduction of the letter, which described that the Euroa football team had visited Corowa for a weekend some weeks ago, with Mr Bill Stevens in charge of the team.

Over 60s Cricket team shows promise after three games

By PETER MORLEY AFTER three games, this season’s over 60s cricket team yet to secure a win, but signs of improvement emerge.

Welcome to new players Phil Brown, Daryl Burges, and Michael Dowling, hoping they enjoy the experience.

Game one was away, travelling to Richmond.

The ground, Citizens park, sees dogs removed at 10.45am, resuming at 4pm upon their return.

Richmond batted for their 40 overs, closing at 4 for 108 and we batted and were dismissed for 74.

Mark Ahern shone, taking

1 for 6 off 6 overs, while Peter Morley made 23.

Game two against Benalla at Friendlies oval. a magnificent day with unfavorable conditions.

Benalla won the toss, batted first, and made 3 for 217.

Tony Curtin stood out, taking 2 for 33 from 7 overs.

Our batting effort resulted

in 67, with David Gleeson making 23, retiring after a wonderful innings.

The third game showed marked improvement against border vets at friendlies oval, enjoying wonderful conditions. border vets won the toss, posting 7 for 201.

Peter Malone impressed, taking 2 for 33 from 6 overs.

Euroa displayed consistency, batting out our allotted overs and compiling 7 for 147.

Skipper Phil Thomson made 29, retiring, while Tony Curtin (24), Peter Morley (19), and Phil Brown (17) retired after making solid contributions.

Our next game is against

Vic country at Rochester on December 3.

With the improvement and the availability of a couple of players, we are hoping for a win.

BOWLS SCOREBOARD VIOLET TOWN BOWLS CLUB

By LEANNE RUSSELL-JONES The Jack Attack competition is in full force, with three nights under our belt and two teams equal first at this stage.

It has been great to see the team members from the Nursing Home, Forget-me-nots, using the new wheelie walkers, etc, and they’re practically fighting for a spot on the bus to come along. The raffles are supported well by donors, thank you all very much, and ticket buyers alike.

We have commenced fundraising for a new Greens roller at $8000 plus.

If anyone would like to contribute financially to this roller it would be appreciated.

Around the club we have new bank and ditch lining being installed.

This replaces the horrible old canvas bank liner that was hanging off.

We are able to do this with thanks to the hard work of everyone at the club and support of attendees for our social bowls on Sunday afternoons.

The Midweek team are continuing to be competitive and slid into 2nd place on the ladder this week after beating Merrigum over there by on point, woohoo.

We enjoyed a 10 point win over Hilltop the week before.

This week sees us play Euroa on our home turf.

The Weekend team travelled to Dookie on Saturday and had a win on two rinks; the total score was 6847, 14-2 so we’re 5th on the ladder, just behind Euroa.

HELP NEEDED - we are looking for volunteers to cover four slots for the Shepparton Bunnings barbecue on Tuesday, December 26.

IN a great team effort, Marg Harrison, Bill O’Connor, Ruth Underwood, Glen Bell (s) scored a six on the 6th end which gave them the lead. Then a seven on the 14th end consolidated a comprehensive win, 32 – 15.

Winning six consecutive ends mid game set up a 13-shot convincing win, 25 – 12 for Moiann Papageorgiou, Nyoli Bell, Ron Harrison, Howard Geldard (s).

Avenel are fourth on the ladder and play top team Mooroopna White next week.

Midweek Pennant Division three, Round 6 Avenel 16 – 83 defeated Shepparton Park 2 - 65.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) had a six-shot lead at the break.

Winning nine of the last eleven ends saw them romp home with a 33 – 14 win.

Up by two shots on the 19th end, Pam Pedder, Graham Lewis, Noel Slater, Geoff Hateley (s) dug deep to

win five of the remaining six ends for a seven-shot win, 24 – 17.

Up by one shot on the scorecard but down two at the head, skip Spud Furletti put down his last bowl with perfect precision to win the end and claim a narrow win 24 – 22.

Avenel are on top of the ladder and play third placed Alexandra away in Round seven.

Weekend Pennant Division three Round a7 Avenel 1 – 79 defeated by Mooroopna Golf 17 – 102.

Nyoli Bell, Noel Slater, Brett McDonald, Geoff Hateley (s) took a six-shot lead after a five on the 21st end.

However, Mooroopna Golf won the last four ends to draw the game, 21 apiece.

Ruth King, Glen Bell, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy (s) held a good lead until Mooroopna Golf came charging home winning the last seven ends and the game 26 – 23.

EUROA GOLF CLUB

By RICHARD JOHNSON REPEAT performances in successive years see last year’s Club Champions go back to back.

Melissa Eddy and Gail Allen started the day even and over the third round Melissa edged to the front to claim her second Club Championship sponsored by Josh Bell Plumbers while in the Men Ed Carracher held a massive 13 shot load going into the final of four rounds after three sub par rounds in the lead up rounds.

The field made up some small gains but leaving Ed with a significant 10 shot win for another championship for the Carracher golfing dynasty.

Ed has six Club Championships to his name now but still has a long way to catch his Dad Lance.

The Division two Champions were Erica Mercer and Rick Brodie while Michelle Thompson and Kevin Meade are the Division three Champions.

Paddy McCarthy claimed another Veterans Championship.

The Medal of Medalists were also decided over the last round of the Championships, and in the Ladies Michelle Thompson collected the Jolly Swagman sponsored Medal and the Men’s Medalist this year is Cam Roper.

Saturday evening the Club hosted a well attended Presentation evening which saw the years major event winners recognised.

In the Ladies trophies Jenny Thompson collected the Captains Trophy and Justine Collins won the Summer Cup. Club President Gail Allen had a big night taking home the Watkins Trophy, the Burton Trophy, the Oakwoods Trophy as well as the Dot Rule Trophy, while Melissa Eddy won the

A field of twenty in the Wednesday competition shot some great scores, none better than Keith Seeber’s 41 points.

Showery conditions reduced the Twilight field to 15 players, but again big scores were carded with Zac Rawlins 22 the winner.

Saturday’s winners were Chris Burke Net 65 and Charlie Watson Net 63 other good scores were Dav Mackrell 68, Charlie Walker 69, Dale McMahon 70 and Cam Roper 71.

Dale McIntosh eagled the first and Josh Bell the third.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB

By DAVID LOVE THE annual President vs Captain stableford challenge was played on a softened Nagambie track due to the 21mm of rain that fell late in the week, which in turn made the course more scorable with the greens being able to hit from afar.

It was the Captain’s team that narrowly came out on top with just a .8 of a point margin on average, this then meant President Jeff Lodding had to part with $100 at the clubhouse bar which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The brilliant year of golfing results continued for Dave Fullager winning yet again with 39 stableford points the number of wins is now too many to remember but it must go down as potentially the most in a year.

Runner up proving that preparation is a key element to his game was steady as a rock Des Phelan with 38 points, belting out SkyHooks classics at the presentation the night before is what he needs to perform his best.

The third place went to Greg Whiteman also thriving from a late to bed early to rise program the less thinking the better the result for these two.

The nearest the pin prizes went to the free swinging John Hurley on the third, Terry Wallis with two dazzling strikes on both the eighth and 13th and Michael Roberts produced a sublime stroke into the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be a monthly medal stroke event with J. Ezard on office duty and M. Mensfeld in the bar.

EUROA CRICKET CLUB D-GRADE - By JACK WISLON EUROA travelled to Kialla to take on Old Students in round six of the D Grade competition.

Captain Ben Jones won the toss and elected to bat first.

A disappointing batting innings left Euroa with a total of 76 with standouts from Jack McKernan looking promising at the top of the order before holding out in the deep and Jake Penman playing a steadying innings at number four top scoring and remaining not out at the end.

With a small total to defend, Old Students got off to a blistering start with the score 0-59 after six overs.

Ben Jones then started an avalanche of wickets with Euroa taking 7-10 within an eight over period with Jack Wilson, Niall McSharry, Robbie Wilson, Cooper Goodall with one wicket each and Mark Goodall taking two wickets in an over to get Euroa back into the match.

Old Students got the remaining seven runs to win an all time classic by three wickets.

Next week D Grade hosts Northerners at Memorial Oval.

IN their inaugural year in the Wangaratta Cricket Association, the Strathbogie Panthers cricket team has emerged as a strong contender for a spot in the finals.

The team’s journey began with a spectacular start, winning their first two games and displaying dominance over last-placed Yarrawonga.

However, a subsequent stumble with two losses serves as a reality check for the Panthers.

President Brad James expressed satisfaction with the team’s integration into the league, highlighting that the travel to Yarrawonga has been manageable at just 60 minutes away.

The Panthers have already notched a couple of wins, creating a positive buzz around the club and town.

Regular attendance of 10-11 players at training sessions indicates a committed and determined squad.

Training sessions held between Violet Town on Tuesdays and Strathbogie on Thursdays, incorporating the pizza community night, have become a crucial part of the team’s preparation.

The absence of a sporting side in Strathbogie since 1992 adds a special significance to the Panthers’ journey, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for the sport.

President James expressed particular pride in having young kids in the team, highlighting their rewarding contributions.

Notable performances include Nathan Butler’s unbeaten 75 runs, pivotal in chasing down 154 runs against the Benalla Bushrangers, and Coby Ross’s remarkable sixwicket haul against secondplaced Gapsted.

As the Strathbogie Panthers head into the Christmas break, they do so with optimism and anticipation for more success in the upcoming fixtures.

With a blend of experienced players and promising young talents, the Panthers are set to make a lasting impression in their debut season.

Gooram celebrates first win of the season

CONGRATULATIONS are in order for Gooram after a gutsy effort to record its first win of the season against Moglonemby at Euroa on Saturday.

In the absence of captain Chris Ellis, sister Judy Sands played like a jet at number two and dropped just five games for the day.

Moglonemby won more sets but fewer games with the final score being 51-48.

Euroa Lawn continued its juggernaut up the ladder by knocking off the second-placed Longwood Lawn.

The Euroa women made it hard for the Longwood ladies with new recruit

Marja Wondergem remaining unbeaten and dropping just six games for the afternoon.

The final score was 61-45.

Sarah Ternes produced another near-perfect performance in St Paul’s match against Benalla Lawn Gold, losing just two games for the day.

Jason Goss retired injured and was replaced by Jim Gall who dashed in from Sheans Creek take to the court with Rosie Cameron in the mixed.

The ladder leader enjoyed a comfortable win over the young Benalla outfit.

The final score was 63-35.

In division two, reigning

premier St Paul’s was keen to make amends for going down to Violet Town the last time the sides met.

The side produced an emphatic victory where St Paul’s didn’t concede a set and only 24 games in total.

Young gun Will Davey was a standout, losing just four games for the afternoon.

Longwood Lawn had high hopes of, like Gooram, recording its breakthrough win of the season but it wasn’t to be.

A new look Benalla Gardens outfit proved too strong.

Despite some very competitive sets the home side went down 72-32.
