Council also suggests that the budget will provide an opportunity for many new initiatives, designed to improve the amenities and lifestyle for both residents and visitors.

“Also included is $55,000 for a carpark study in Avenel, $30,000 for the Longwood Master Plan, $95,000 for Strathbogie Memorial Hall roof works,

$20,000 for a public art installation and more.

“The Pitch my Project initiative is a great way of ensuring we’re funding and completing the projects that matter to our community.”

Cr Binks said as a result of all the submissions received, council had also increased the overall budget for the Community Grant and the Community

Events streams by $60,000.

“This means there’s more money available for fantastic projects in our community,” she said.

The 2022/23 Budget has allocated a $14.87 million capital works program, which will be combined with the $7.69 million carried forward from last year.

From page 1 In addition to the four-year period covered by this budget, council’s long term financial plan has been extended to cover a 10-year period which allows for a total expenditure on capital works over that period of $92.22 million.

“Some of the wonderful projects funded in this year’s capital works program are $35,000 for kitchen upgrades at the Strathbogie Memorial Hall, $10,000 for a fence extension at the Nagambie Bowls Club, $100,000 for a Kirwans Bridge options investigation and $100,000 for a shire-wide open space strategy,” Cr Binks said.

Council say they have worked to minimise future rate increases and prepared the budget based on a 1.75 per cent increase in the average rate per property, which is covered by the State Government’s ‘Fair Go Rates’ legislation.

“The rate increase allows for maintenance of existing service levels, funding new initiatives and the allocation of sufficient funds for the continuing strategic renewal of council’s infrastructure,” Cr Binks said.

The 2022-23 Budget also outlines an operating expenditure of $32.28 million for services, including road and bridge maintenance, parks, open space and streetscape works and footpath and pedestrian bridge updates.

This budget aims to provide a significant amount towards the renewal of existing assets as well as the creation of new assets in the shire.

Included in the capital programs are the completion of the Nagambie Foreshore Walk, rehabilitation of the Violet Town Landfill, sealing of Habel Road in Nagambie, streetscape improvements and upgrades to aquatic facilities.

Farmers’ lobby group launches election wish list

By STEVE KELLY THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is calling on a $2 billion commitment over four years from the two major parties in its push for better infrastructure and support for people living in the country.

The VFF has called for the reintroduction of the Fixing Country Roads program to provide funding grants to rural and regional councils to undertake local road projects beyond regular road maintenance.

As part of its plan VFF says $500 million is needed to fix pinch points on priority freight routes to increase access for high productivity routes and improve efficiency.

In releasing its state election booklet this week, the lobby group also highlighted delays in the completion of the Murray Basin Rail Project which is costing the industry more than $12 million in additional freight costs.

The VFF’s plan focuses on four key areas to improve outcomes for farming communities and regional Victoria.

Another key issue presented is a response to the regional housing crisis and the VFF is seeking commitments for the establishment of a Victorian Government taskforce with the job of creating a state-wide regional housing strategy.

The VFF are also after a fairer rates system instead of the current situation whereby rural ratepayers pay more in rates as a percentage of the value of their property than ratepayers in Melbourne.

“What’s more, rural ratepayers receive and have access to fewer services from local government than ratepayers in the city,” the VFF plan reports.

“The small rate base for rural

councils is making it harder for them to provide adequate service levels for their communities.

“Victoria should move to a local government funding model where the state sets a general rate for all property and redistributes funds collected from rates on the basis of equity and need.

“This ‘equalised funding model’ will provide a more sustainable funding base for all local government and will ensure all Victorians, no matter where they live, receive quality and reliable infrastructure and services.”

VFF president Emma Germano said she was proud to present a positive agenda that focused on delivering for farmers and regional communities.

“The VFF has pulled together a policy platform that doesn’t just speak to the issues farmers are facing, but the issues faced by all regional communities,” she said.

The VFF will look to lobby candidates in key marginal seats like Ripon, Polwarth, Bass, Nepean, Eildon, South Barwon, Mildura and Shepparton, among others, ahead of the November 26 state election.

Government wants more startups in regional Victoria

By GUS RIDDER THE Labor Government plans to deliver more support for regional startups through new cash grants that have been made available through Victoria’s startup agency LaunchVic. Minister for innovation, medical Research and the digital economy Jaala Pulford announced expressions of interest are now open with grants of up to $300,000 on offer for programs that promote startup entrepreneurship to regional Victorians.

“This will ensure our regional startups have the support they need to transform their dreams into a reality, creating more local jobs and making Victoria an even more attractive destination to launch a start-up,” Ms Pulford said.

“This is a really exciting opportunity for entrepreneurs and start-ups across regional Victoria and I look forward to seeing them succeed.”

Local councils, business chambers and regionally based innovation hubs are encouraged to apply with the aim to harness more startup activity in regional communities.

Victoria’s startup industry is growing rapidly, more than doubling in value in the past year to $23.6 billion.

The government is also supporting the startup sector through several key investments including the Victorian Startup Capital Fund and the $10 million Alice Anderson Fund.

Supporting Victorian startups is one of the government’s strategic priorities highlighted in the Innovation statement released in November last year, with the aim to increase competitiveness and attract national and international investors.

Publisher expands in South East NSW NORTH East Media (NEM), a division of Provincial Press Group and publisher of Wangaratta Chronicle, has acquired a controlling interest in Monaro Media Group (MMG), publisher of The Monaro Post.

MMG is a Cooma based publisher with offices in Jindabyne and Bombala and has grown since launching in 2006 to include The Post, The Snowpost, Your Farm, Your Coastal Life and The Innovation Magazine, MMG’s chairman David Sheldon said the partnership would strengthen the company’s print and digital publications and en-

hance automation and marketing resources.

Founding ‘Post’ editor and director Gail Eastaway said she was pleased the partnership agreement had been completed.

“Our local MMG team has consistently delivered essential news and information to the Snowy Monaro region since we started The Post in 2006,” she said.

“We are proud of what has been achieved with our print and online publications and look forward to working with PPG directors Hartley and Edward Higgins, and their award-winning community newspaper group.”

PPG celebrated 100 years and four generations of newspaper publishing last year, with its founder W T Higgins having purchased The Wangaratta Despatch in 1921 and later merging it with the tri-weekly Wangaratta Chronicle.

Communications fault causes havoc for V/Line passengers Off Grid Systems

By GUS RIDDER DISRUPTIONS continued on the V/Line network, with a communications fault cancelling dozens of services during the morning peak last Wednesday.

This is the third time in five weeks that the network has come to a standstill during peak travel times.

According to V/Line, the fault affected the way train controllers communicate with train drivers.

Following the issue, many early morning services across multiple train lines were delayed or replaced by coaches.

V/Line worked with VicTrack to put a temporary communication solution in place, which allowed trains to resume running at normal speed around 6.30am.

Fortunately for many in the region, the fault was resolved before the departure time of the first Albury line service for the day, meaning these were not directly affected by the fault.

This was confirmed by V/Line chief executive officer Matt Carrick.

“Train services along the Albury Line ran as planned this morning,” he said.

Many Albury services are still currently being replaced by coaches due to planned works on the Albury stabling yard which aims to enable VLocity trains to stay overnight in Albury for the first time.

Shadow minister for public transport Steph Ryan said commuters were owed a full explanation.

“The only thing regional Victorians want is to know that a train is going to turn up and get us where we need to go.”

Ms Ryan said regional passengers deserve to know exactly what’s wrong with our trains.

“Commuters are realistic, we know there might be delays or cancellations every now and then, but there’s something seriously wrong when the entire network is shutdown three

times in just five weeks,” Ms Ryan said.

“We deserve a full explanation on what this ‘communications fault’ is, the risk to commuter safety and why it’s throwing an entire regional train system into shutdown in the 21st century.

“A change in government in November will deliver a 25 per cent Regional Infrastructure Guarantee for new investment in the regions, including in our rail services, but we’re owed answers long before then.

“The Public Transport Minister needs to step up - today - to tell regional commuters what’s

driving these serious disruptions to our trains and when it will be fixed.”

Liberal Democrats member for northern Victoria Tim Quilty agreed with Ms Ryan.

“Regional Victorians rely on the train service for work, for critical medical appointments,” he said.

“It is an essential service for country people.

“Every time we book a ticket, we should not have to wonder whether or not the train is going to turn up.

“In 2022, this is a service that we should be able to rely on.”

Sporting clubs encouraged to apply for grants

By GUS RIDDER GRASSROOTS sports and active recreation clubs and organisations across Northern Victoria are being urged to apply for funding to boost their equipment, skills and administration expertise.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced applications had opened for the Andrews Labor Government’s latest round of the Sporting Club Grants Program.

The program provides payments of up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment (including defibrillators), up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers and up to $5000 to improve club operational effectiveness.

Grassroots clubs and organisations in Northern Victoria are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Minister for community sport Ros Spence spoke about the value that sport provides for many of our communities.

The program has provided

more than 9100 grants totalling more than $13.8 million to clubs across the state since 2015.

It is complemented by the Community Sport Sector COVID-19 Survival Package that provided $50 million to more than 7500 clubs, leagues, state associations and other organisations across the sport and active recreation sector.

Ms Symes spoke of the opportunities that the program would provide for sports clubs and organisations.

“The program is giving grassroots sports clubs across the north east the support they need to come back better than ever from the recent restrictions, grow their ranks and help more people than ever play the sports they love.”

“I encourage all our local clubs in Northern Victoria to grasp this opportunity and apply.”

Help us bring the Commonwealth Games to Lake Nagambie If you haven’t already heard Council is telling everyone they can that we’re ready, willing and able to host rowing on Lake Nagambie in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Council is advocating to the Victorian Government to first include rowing as a sport in the games and then commit to hosting it at the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre.

Talk to a planner with new council initiative STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has launched a new initiative called ‘Talk to a Planner’.

The initiative will see council’s planners hitting the road, making themselves available in townships across the municipality to offer advice and information and seek feedback on the current planning scheme review.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the shire was seeing unprecedented growth in planning applications.

“In the past 12 months we have seen the number of planning permit applications rise by 16 per cent,” Cr Binks said.

“This equates to more than $42 million in planning activity across our municipality.

“With that comes excitement and concern from our community.

“We know protecting this special place we call home is important to you.”

Members of the community can book in a time to speak to the planners who can provide advice and information on the local

planning scheme and state planning policy.

Council will also be seeking feedback on community planning priorities and how they can improve the local planning policy to better meet the community’s needs.

“Our planning scheme review will assess whether the local planning policies and provisions are meeting the needs of the local area and community,” Cr Binks said.

“It will also look at how the planning scheme is addressing state and local planning policy objectives.”

The review will also cover five key themes, which include: 1. Neighbourhood character.

2. Sustainable development.

3. Connectivity.

4. Commercial and industrial development.

5. Vegetation and our environment.

School holidays celebrated with Euroa gig

By GUS RIDDER THE youth of Euroa were able to celebrate the end of the school term with a concert titled ‘EuroaDaBoat’ on Friday.

The all-ages music event was held at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Euroa, with extremely talented students ensuring everyone in attendance was up and dancing.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the concert was an awesome precursor to the young talented musicians heading off to Melbourne to record a compilation album.

“Local acts Bad Ibis, YNOT, Inversion, and The Counterfeits are all very excited to be recording as part of the Kool Skools program,” Cr Binks said.

“Kool Skools is a national multimedia project run by Studio 52 in Melbourne and the live concert in Euroa is a great chance for the musicians to play live on stage in their community before heading to the studio in Melbourne.”

Zali Greasley, lead singer with YNOT, said she was very excited about the opportunities thanks to being a part of the awesome FReeZa Program.

FReeZA is a Victorian Government initiative that is supporting all ages drug, alcohol and smoke free entertainment for 15

to 25 year olds.

“FReeZA gives young people the opportunity to be a part of something and to learn important organisation and event planning skills,” she said.

“I enjoy performing as it gives me a chance to share with others what we have created and it helps to boost my confidence in singing.”

Zali was pleased with how many people came to the event to hear YNOT’s music.

“It’s always nice to have local support and to have people get to listen and give us feedback on our work,” she said.

Jack Williams, YNOT’s bass player, said the FReeZA program was important because it allowed participants to have fun as well as being an outlet.

“It’s a creative outlet, an emotional outlet; and it’s fun to do,” he said.

Jordan Kipling, guitarist and back up vocalist with YNOT, said the FReeZA program allowed teenagers and young adults to have a say in what happens in their community.

“I like performing because it means I get to show off what I’ve practiced so much, also performing in front of a crowd gives such an adrenaline rush when they’re excited about what I’m playing,” he said.

Brave Euroa teachers feel the freeze IT was an icy 13 degrees at Euroa Secondary College (ESC) with a high chance of showers, but six brave, slightly crazy teachers readied themselves to be covered in ice and icy cold water for the school’s Big Freeze event last Thursday.

All the teachers participating had been nominated by students and it was all for a good cause.

This was the second ice bucket challenge ESC has held to raise money for FightMND.

Each teacher reached their nominated cash targets, even the steeper amounts were reached, so all six did not avoid being frozen, or possibly catching a cold. $2800 was the grand total raised by the college between the brave teachers freeze and through the sale of MND beanies.

The brave ESC teachers were Misti-Jai Brydon, Matilda Murrihy, Danielle Harrison, Lachlan Cooke, Stephanie Fry and James Griffin,

who unfortunately missed out on the freeze due to illness.

Watch out James, term 3 could be your turn to be doused.

The cheers, screams and hoots from the entire ESC student community encouraged ten students to pick up the buckets and pour.

The noise from the crowd drowned out the moans, groans and screams from the brave, cold and wet volunteers.

We are grateful for the

support of ESC especially Madeline McClusky who organised and led what is a challenging event for the second year.

“It’s wonderful to see so many of the FightMND beanies being worn as part of our school uniform,” Madeline said.

“Many thanks to all who have participated and enjoyed the events that unfolded, aside from the five teachers who got wet.

“We wish them a speedy recovery back to warmth.”

ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Stephanie Fry was another of the teachers who braved the cold for charity, helping the school raise $2800 for FightMND.

Is it time to reassess climate science?

WE all believe that increasing CO2 emissions could produce climate change because laboratory experiments show this.

Importantly, the hypothesis has never been proved because the earth’s climate is very complex and not fully understood.

There are other factors also which indicate the hypothesis may be incorrect.

For example, despite huge increases in CO2 levels the earth’s temperature has increased only a small amount in 100 years.

At this rate of warming, it will take about 300 years to reach the temperatures of the prosperous Roman period.

Forecasts that increasing CO2 emissions, if continued, would by 2020 cause the earth’s temperature to rise by 3-4 degrees have not occurred, nor have forecasts that the earth would be in permanent drought.

Some people believe climate change is occurring as evidenced by recent severe weather events such as storms, floods, bushfires and earthquakes.

Weather events, however, do not in themselves indicate climate change.

The cause of climate change has never been settled among scientists.

Some believe it is caused by forces outside the control of man.

If it is caused by CO2 emissions, then this will already continue for some years.

I have concluded, therefore, that we must plan to live with climate change rather than working to stop it.

There is , apparently, no certainty that by reducing CO2 emissions to zero we would stop climate change.

More than satisfied with Euroa Health service I AM writing as a very happy customer of Euroa Health Urgent Care service.

Last Sunday evening, my husband was having severe tummy pain so I made a call to Euroa Health Urgent Care.

My phone call was answered by a very helpful nurse who said she would contact the

doctor and ring me back - I received a prompt call back saying that the doctor was on their way and for us to come straight in to Euroa Health, where we were met by the nursing staff and then the doctor, who took immediate measures to alleviate my husband’s severe pain.

It was still necessary to call the ambulance to be transferred to GV Emergency Department, but while waiting for the ambulance, my husband was under the care of the excellent staff at Euroa Health - a much preferable option to waiting at home for the ambulance to arrive.

I am echoing Shane Jacobson’s very positive feedback regarding the excellent service and care given by the staff at Euroa Health Urgent Care.

Euroa CFA celebrates presentation night

THE Euroa Urban Fire Brigade was finally able to hold their presentation night last week, with COVID previously putting a hold on celebrations.

On Friday night, members of the brigade and their families gathered at the Euroa CFA to acknowledge and celebrate the many years of dedication and service made by its members.

Numerous awards were presented throughout the night, ranging from five years of service to an incredible 65 years.

The brigade also acknowledged the dedication of their junior members who were also presented with their own awards.

A remarkable 650 combined years of service were recognised on the night, highlighting

the sense of community and volunteer spirit held by those in the CFA and across the town.

Among the awards were former captain Bill Williams who was recognised for his 65 years of service and support to the CFA. Peter Fulton was presented with the David Currie Memorial Senior Fire Fighter of the Year award for his spectacular efforts.

Neville Mawson received a service award and Addison Godsmark, Bailey Thomson, Matilda Kubeil, Charlotte Davies and Amelia Delahey were all recognised as junior fire brigade award winners.

Many more received additional awards for their continued service and support to the Euroa Fire Brigade.

LIFETIME OF SERVICE: Ex Captain Bill Williams received an award for 65 years of service and support to the CFA.

THE next meeting of the Longwood Action Group will be held Wednesday, July 6 at 7 pm - All welcome.

Taungurung releasing children’s book in traditional language THE Taungurung Land and Waters Council (TLaWC) has announced the release of the first book written for children in both Taungurung and English languages.

Bijl Ba Wudhi Deberra(Bijil and Moths) is authored by Aunty Loraine Padgham, Taungurung Elder.

This is the story of a young Taungurung boy who accompanies his parents on their annual trip to the high plains in summer to participate in cultural activities, renew friendships with other tribes and clans, and

to harvest Bogong moths.

The book includes a QR code that can be scanned to listen to the story read in Taungurung language.

“This is a landmark moment in the ongoing reawakening of the Taungurung language,” TLaWC chief executive officer, Matt Burns, said.

“It will form part of a number of resources that will be made over time to re-establish our language as an integral part of the cultural landscape for those, both indigenous and other-

wise, living on Taungurung Country.”

This book is dedicated to the Taungurung people, past and present, who have cared for Taungurung Country and culture since time immemorial.

Teachers and librarians from primary schools have already expressed delight in having this cultural resource available.

The book is available for purchase on TLaWC’s website https://taungurung. com.au/store at a special launch price of $20.

LIVESTOCK buyers dug deep on the back of the generosity of farmers to raise almost $23,000 for Euroa Health at the June cattle sale.

The funds raised exceeded the target of $20,000 for the purchase of vital equipment for the Hospital’s Urgent Care Centre.

Euroa Health innovation and special projects manager, Melissa Seymour, said the funds would purchase an Efficia monitor, which directly connects with Ambulance Victoria’s vital patient information, as well as a new patient treatment bed to replace an outdated fixed theatre bed in the centre.

“These community fund-

raisers are so important to Euroa Health being able to serve our community with quality care,” she said.

“It was also nice to connect with farmers, as we are otherwise unlikely to reach them on their farm unless they become unwell.”

Euroa Health chief executive officer, Cheree Hunter, thanked the generosity of the farmers in the area who donated cattle to the fundraiser.

“Fundraisers like this ensure the viability of our Urgent Care Centre so our community don’t have to travel outside of our town to regional centres for health care,” she said.

“We are a communityowned hospital and without fundraising support, we struggle as our hospital is not publicly funded.

“Farmers who donated said they never know when they might need to use our services so they wanted to donate, to ensure we are here when they need us.”

Among the major contributors to the fundraiser was the Hayes family of Tarcombe Herefords, Ruffy.

Principal Tim Hayes said it was a worthy cause.

“We need to ensure Euroa Health has support wherever possible because our local farming families may need this care anytime,” he said.

Program announced to bring arts and culture to regional Victoria THE State Labor Government says they will support local artists as they reconnect with audiences through Touring Victoria, a program that provides grants for cultural organisations and creatives.

Artists and creative organisations from across Northern Victoria are invited to hit the road and take their performances, exhibitions and events across regional and outer-metropolitan Victoria through this program.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has called

for applications (closing July 14) for the Labor Government’s Touring Victoria program, which provides grants of between $10,000 and $250,000 to support tours

by Victorian artists and organisations across regional areas.

“We’re supporting our creative community to hit the road and reconnect with audiences across the state, delivering the cultural experiences that make Victoria our nations cultural heartland,” she said.

“Touring Victoria not only

brings amazing gigs and experiences to Northern Victoria, it supports our local creatives to present their work, build their audiences and bring visitors from across the state.”

The most recent round of grants supported regional tours from such diverse acts as singer Kutcha Edwards, all-female circus-comedy show Trash Test Dummies, The Australian Ballet, Finucane and Smith and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

This new program means

that audiences in regional Victoria can expect even more of the best live theatre, music and cultural events up ahead.

Touring productions also provide an economic boost to the towns and regions they visit.

The most recent round of the program will support touring activity that hits the road from November 1.

By DIANE GRANT ONE sure way to enjoy a winter’s Sunday afternoon is to gather together some folk who enjoy having a singalong, a dance, a laugh and plenty of great food and fellowship.

The Kelvingrove Village folk prepared for the afternoon by hanging Christmas decorations around their hall, with Christmas trees and table decorations surrounding the area before inviting guests to join them.

All the elements of a good community Christmas party were in full force at the Kelvingrove Village hall on Sunday in Nagambie.

Well-known local entertainer Noel Pearson performed the evergreen songs to which the guests joined in with happy singing.

The Nagambie seniors line dancers looked great doing their dances to popular tunes, some parlour games were enjoyed by many of the guests and the food for afternoon tea was in abundance and the fellowship enjoyed lifted everyone’s spirits.

The hall looked very festive and welcoming to the guests who joined the village residents.

The annual event in midyear attracted the big man in red for the

completion of the fun Christmas in June afternoon.

The guests were given some little bags of Christmas lollies before Santa had to fly off to the North Pole to watch the Collingwood footy game.

A raffle as well as games prizes were popular, with the winners

taking home some Christmas booty.

Noel Pearson sang Happy Birthday to me for the coming week, and a birthday cake and presentation of a village plaque was presented to me for the volunteer work I enjoy doing for the village such as Christmas in June.

I thank them for all their care and arranging patient transport to the Melbourne hospital.

My surgery was done on Monday by the specialist and his theatre team.

I would like to thank them, and the nurses and services staff at the hospital for their excellent pre-op and after care.

I would also like to say how thankful I have been to be able to afford Defence health insurance for 55 years.

Which helps John and I to be covered for ill health in our senior years.

Thanks everyone for all your care and compassion.

BUT I DID GET TO: Needless to say I could not go to the Lions 30th anniversary and I did not get to learn much about what happened in Nagambie the past week.

But I did make my MU Morning Melodies on June 23 for our Anglican Mother’s Union fundraiser.

We had a lovely morning with folk from Nagambie, Avenel, Seymour, and Melbourne and around the district singing along with entertainer Noel Pearson in the church hall.

I was also able to attend and conduct our Kelvingrove Village Christmas in June afternoon and enjoyed seeing our residents and guests have a good time after the COVID and winter blues seemed to be taking us over.

It lifted our spirits.

Morning Melodies event attracts 70-strong crowd

By DIANE GRANT MEMBERS of the Anglican Parish of Central Goulburn’s Mothers’ Union (MU) branch hosted 70 guests at their annual fundraiser, Morning Melodies, at the Parish’s church hall at Christ Church Seymour last Thursday.

The branch began in 1959 at Christ Church in Seymour and then included members from St John’s Nagambie Anna Branch and St Paul’s Avenel Caritas group when they merged in the early 2000s to become the new Central Goulburn Mother’s Union (MU) branch.

For 63 years the local MU has given support for marriage and family life and luckily they were able to conduct their one and only fundraiser for the year as COVID did not prevent it being held like it did last year.

The MU members have been holding an annual fundraiser in

Seymour for over 45 years and this year’s funds raised were for the Overseas and Outreach Papua New Guinea project.

Well known local entertainer Noel Pearson entertained the guests with his popular evergreen songs that he performed.

The audience said they loved the morning.

“We had a swell time,” Nagambie resident Marlene Brew said.

Those attending enjoyed the atmosphere, the morning tea, and socialising with other like minded folk who love the 19501960’s music that Noel Pearson is so good at performing at his gigs.

The MU would like to thank Noel Pearson, their guests, all those who donated raffle and lucky door prizes, the Avenel Craft Group and others for donating trading table items, those who gave morning tea and all who supported the morning in

any way or who gave generous donations towards the fundraiser.

The annual fundraiser was a success thanks to the support of all concerned and the funds raised will go off to the MU national Overseas and Outreach project department so it can be sent to the Papua New Guinea MU 2022 project.

On August 9, it is MU Mary Sumner Day, for all branches across the Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta.

Members from all MU branches are encouraged to attend.

Young band’s debut show to be held in Euroa

A BIG day looms for a group of young musicians at Kilmore’s Assumption College as they get set for their debut gig, held right in Euroa.

Having met at the school and forging friendships through a passion for music, it wasn’t too long before the boys started jamming together.

Under the guidance of music teacher Matt Jennings, himself a professional musician who plays lead guitar for Australian rock artist Alex Lahey, the boys have progressed to the point that they are keen to perform at live music venues.

The band recently competed in the Kilmore Busk-

ing Championships and won the People’s Choice Award and came in second overall as voted by the official judges.

“To see the boys progress the way they have is a real credit to the commitment they have made to their music,” Matt Jennings said.

“They definitely have talent in spades and knit well together.

“I am really confident that they can kick some goals from here.”

The band has recently been named Swim State and will unveil a handful of original songs they have been working on at the gig.

Crime rate falls

NEW data released by the Criminal Statistics Agency (CSA) has shown a slight decline in total criminal incidents for the Strathbogie Shire, although the total offences committed in the region has skyrocketed.

The statistics cover the year ending March 31, 2022 and include summaries of criminal incidents, offences committed, offender incidents, victim reports and family violence.

After 453 criminal incidents in 2021, this year

saw a 1.5 per cent decrease to 446 incidents.

Of these 446 incidents, 135 occurred in Nagambie, 125 in Euroa, 30 in Violet Town, 30 in Avenel and 17 in Miepoll.

While most other towns in the region saw a decrease in total incidents, Euroa saw their incidents increase after only having 91 registered last year.

The amount of cases recorded in the shire still sits heavily below the state average.

Accurate shooting and amazing defense saw the Towners increase their lead in the second quarter with the score at half time 42-9.

In the third quarter the defenders lifted and showed amazing skills to achieve some great turnovers. Violet Town continued to work hard in the final quarter to play a fantastic team game.

Defenders Lara Saxon and Maisy Wilson repelled the Kialla West attacks with multiple intercepts and good positioning led to them dominating in the rebounding battle.

Scores were 5-0 after the first quarter.

In the second Daisy Cameron and Grace Eddy brought the ball confidently through the midcourt and Ellie Robinson provided some nice feeds into the attacking circle, where Bethan Burton was in hot shooting form, putting down numerous long shots.

Scores were 8-1 at half time.

Coach Saxon made wholesale changes at half time, swinging captain Grace Eddy to goal shooter, both Grace and Bethan Burton poured in five goals each for the quarter while Lara Saxon and Willow Timperley were controlling the midcourt.

Scores were 18-2 at the end of the third.

Maisy Wilson and Daisy Cameron were rock solid in defense, barely allowing the ball into Kialla’s circle, where Ellie Robinson was working hard to maintain front position against her opponent.

Violet Town continued this form throughout the second and third quarters, with everyone on court working together well.

At third quarter time VT were up by four but Undera came out firing in the last quarter to quickly reduce that lead putting the pressure back on the Towners.

Both teams desperately wanted the win and worked hard in defensive to get the ball back and force the opposition to make unforced error.

Going goal for goal for most of the last quarter Undera were able to get the final goal to win them the match.

An intense finish to a great game.

Junior netballers claw their way to a win EJFNC JUNIOR NETBALL EUROA UNDER 13 THE Under 13 Magpies netball team got off to a slow start against Tabilk on Sunday at Memorial Oval, managing only three goals in the opening term.

Another lack-lustre performance in the second term saw Euroa trailing by five goals at half-time.

A few crucial changes which saw Avie Hill go to goal defence from centre and Zahara come off the bench into Wing Attack gave the Magpies an immediate lift.

Goalies Grace McKellar and Lily Asquith piled on 11 goals in the third quarter and essentially sealed the narrow (two goal) victory.

Two Euroa students qualify for state events THE Hume Region Cross Country Championships was held recently and nine Euroa Secondary College students journeyed to the Benalla Showgrounds to take part.

It proved to be a good day for the students participating, especially for Danny Williams and Alison Chapman.

Danny Williams, in the 15 year old boys event, worked his way through the top ten runners into the first position within the first kilometer of the race.

Once in this position, Danny

never relinquished his hold on the lead and ran out the convincing winner of his event, ensuring a spot in the upcoming state events.

Alison Chapman ran in the 16 year old girls event.

Initially Alison settled into the twentieth position from where she slowly worked her way through the field to finally take fourth position.

Even in the last 50 meters of the race, Alison found the strength to pass runners to secure her place

in the State Events.

Ethan Saxon and Addison Godsmark had kicked off the day for the College team in the 12/13 year old boys race, and both managed to finish mid-field.

Macey Watson and Charlotte Davies in the 12/13 year old girls race also finished in the middle of the pack.

Sam Holden and Leila Creevey represented the college in the 14 year old boys and girls events and also achieved respectable middle of the field results for the college.

Charli Hill finished with a hard fought middle of the field placing in the 15 year old girls event.

Both Danny and Alison will go on to represent the Euroa Secondary College in the State Cross Country Championships to be held in term 3 with the knowledge that the college is fully behind them.

Congratulations to all of the Euroa Secondary College students who participated in what was a great day of events, held on a relatively flat course on a beautiful winter’s day.

KDFNL FOOTBALL LONGWOOD UNDER 18 WELL what can we say about the under 18s this week other than well done to every one of them on the massive effort put in to help turn around last week’s unfortunate scoreline.

Better players on the day were Dakota Pellegrino, Zane Kilroy and Harry Shiner who all stood up and proved their leadership qualities.

Longwood are looking forward to taking on Stanhope next week.

UNDER 13 THE Redlegs started off a bit scrappy with more of a cat fight this week.

Jed Caddy put the pressure away kicking a few.

Riley walker was solid in defence.

Tom Macdermid repelling everything that was thrown at him putting in a solid peformance.

By ROB BROWNLEE WEATHER conditions this week were certainly appropriate for winter, but on Saturday, June 25 the Golf God helped us a little.

Twenty men and nine ladies played stableford, again some members from Euroa joined us for a round.

Ladies winner was Kristen Moore with 27 points.

Men’s winner was Peter Phillips with 37 points.

He’s been so consistent of late as it was only a matter of time.

Lineballs were won by Richard Eddy 34 points, Glen Mc Martin 33 points, Grant Pearce 32 points, Matt Millls 31 points, John Moore 30 points.

Nearest the pins: 4th Richard Eddy, 8th John Chaponnel , 15th Gary Hewlett, 17th Richard Eddy.

Straightest drive went to Kerry Hewlett.

Ladies drive and pitch went to Kerry Hewett.

Men’s drive and pitch John Moore.

Next Saturday, July 2 stroke is the game for the Monthly Medal sponsored by Helen and David Kennett, with Greg Roberts Duty Manager.

Nagambie Golf Club results

WINNER: Danny Williams was a comfortable winner in the 15 year old boys race and will join Alison Chapman in representing the school at the state events.

DON BUBECK of Euroa golf club returns to Nagambie to go one better than his last visit and win Sunday’s stableford event with 32 points.

The course was once again heavy under foot with good scores few and far between, legendary scrapper Lindsay Hall finished runner up with 30 points beating an inform Jeremy Ezard on count back also 30 points.

The nearest the pin prizes went to “Thumping’ Phil Hageman on the 8th, Ben Cassar lighting it up on the 13th and Harold Rayner showing he still has the right stuff on the 16th.

Winter pennant is underway with Nagambie winning their first round match against Shepparton four & one at Tocumwal a week ago, but the dream start was dented with the team losing round two, two & three to Tocumwal at the Kyabram Valley View course.

Next week’s golf will move to a Saturday fixture; a monthly medal stroke event will be played with B. Leviston on office duty and W. Le Cerf in the bar.

This makes way for Nagambie to host the third round of winter pennant on the Sunday with the local lads taking on Hilltop GC.

Winter tennis competition heats up

By RHONDA CARPENTER THE courts were dry, and the sun eventually came out when Mansfield Black hosted Euroa for their match last Monday.

Black began well, determined in both openers to take control.

Jenny Bell and Di Ellis relished their first time on court together this season and combined superbly to take the set eight-nil against Euroa’s Lyndall Bigland and Rowena Ellis.

Black’s Rhonda Carpenter and Jenny Smith both somewhat nervous at the outset fell behind but gathered momentum, hit the ball deep and took the set eight-five.

Bell and Carpenter raced to a four-nil lead in their set, and when Bigland and Lyn Pierce steadied, Black resisted their challenge, ultimately winning 8-3. The first three sets belonged to Black.

Euroa having warmed to the contest, wrested control from their opponents by taking the next three sets eight-five, eight-five and eight-six.

It was an even and fascinating contest.

Every game had multiple deuces and a few scoring challenges after lengthy points.

Players were drawn to watch play on the adjacent court and there were plenty of laughs.

When Carpenter hesitated to hit but let the ball go long, Mary Dewis cried out “C’mon Rhonda, you’re here to play tennis - have a go!”

It was a wonderfully entertaining day, the action enjoyed by sole spectator Pat Howard who watched in the sun and provided local support.

Mansfield Black secured the win over Euroa by eight games, three/40 to three/32.

Moglonemby hosted Mansfield Red in Euroa.

Marlene Hanrahan and Judy Sands were on fire in their opener against Red’s Karyn Fraser and fillin Kate Campbell from Benalla winning eight-three.

In a tight contest Red won two tiebreakers.

Fraser combined well with Carolyn Murray to win one breaker and then with Deb McCormack to win eight-five, and Murray and Campbell combined strongly for the other breaker. eight-five for Moglonemby.

The teams shared the sets, but Moglonmeby got up by eight games.

Terip hosted Mansfield Blue and the dedication of the bye team Benalla was again on display when Maureen Jewell and Deb Siggers trekked to Terip to fill in and provide the match.

Both teams had an enjoyable day of laughs and great tennis with Terip proving too strong for the visiting combination.

They didn’t have it all their own way though, Siggers and Sophie Yencken won Blue’s only set eightsix.

Terip won five sets to one, 46 games to 23.

Benalla remain in top spot of the ladder on 36 points, then Euroa on 34, Terip 31 Mansfield Black 25, Moglonemby 21, Mansfield Blue 20, Mansfield Red 13.

Competition returns after the mid-winter break on the 11th of July.

Red will host Black, Benalla host Blue, Moglonemby host Terip and Euroa have the bye.

Longwood looking forward to better luck next week KDFNL NETBALL LONGWOOD A GRADE had a challenging first quarter, which allowed Murchison to find a 15 goal lead. We fought back hard, matching goal for goal in the second.

Tireless efforts from our midcourt and defence kept the gap from getting any bigger in the third and fourth, but despite our improved accuracy in goals, we were unable to overturn the early damage done.

Although Murchison proved better on the day, we have taken some valuable insight from this match, and know exactly what our next training focus looks like.

Another week, another new line-up for the Redlegs B Grade, this week we welcomed back Boo and Reg to the defensive end after recovering from injuries which has been the theme of our season so far.

However even with a different starting seven every week this team is extremely resilient and powers on regardless.

UNDER 17 UNDER 17s played a very competitive game this weekend and they should be very proud of themselves, shows how well they can play as a team.

BOC goes to a girl who really worked hard and play a very good game and that’s Natarsha Ebert, and coaches award goes to a girl who doesn’t give up and pushes herself every week and that’s Cassie Rawlings.

UNDER 15 THE U15s had a rocky start to the game and it unfortunately took a little long to adjust, but they found their rhythm in the second half of the game.

The score board didn’t affect their attitude to the game and they continued to push against a tough side in Murchison.

BOC was our vice-captain in Bella Trait, she was the loudest girl on the court, encouraging all her team mates and shot amazingly.

Coaches award was given to Allira Nichols, who is an U13s player but she is such a strong defensive player in the ring, really making the opponent’s shooters work hard for their goals.

GVFL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE WHILST the weather was being kind, the first quarter did not start off exactly as Euroa would have desired.

Tatura began strongly, applying plenty of pressure in the goal ring.

Their attack end were also feeding into their goalers well, making every pass count.

Midway through the quarter Euroa started to find their rhythm with some nice transitions into the goals and ended the quarter level pegging with the Bulldogs.

The second quarter saw some great efforts by Bridget Hill and Tylah Marchbank, but Euroa was still having pressure applied on every ball.

They needed to show plenty of patience to work the ball into their goalers with Eliza Hoare and Kellie Davidson moving the ball around well until a good option was available.

The Magpie defenders were working hard, but Tatura were still working it into their goalers. Euroa were only two goals up at half time.

Euroa started the third quarter convincingly.

Bree Poole and Karly Wappett were moving well in the ring and some great individual efforts by all members of the team saw Euroa start to get on top of Tatura and finish the quarter with a seven goal lead.

Euroa kept the foot on the pedal from the first centre pass of the last quarter, forcing Tatura to make errors.

In the fourth quarter the pressure was on, Alita White kept up the defensive pressure.

Elle Sanders and Hannah Kubeil fed accurately into the girls in the ring.

Overall all the girls stepped up and did their part to gain the win against Tatura.

For the first time in many weeks, the Euroa girls played to their fullest potential, and finished the game with four points to add to their season tally and victorious smiles on their faces.

Euroa started the game strongly, and were able to stay in touch with the away team for the first three quarters.

Euroa slipped back in the first few minutes of the last quarter to be down by four goals, however came back in emphatic fashion to win by five goals- much to the delight of the vocal, parochial crowd who were cheering them on.

Mahony Fothergill played an excellent game for her first game in B grade, keeping her cool and feeding Euroa goalers Meg Sundblom and Cass Payne perfectly.

Elisha Kubeil held strong in GD, turning the ball over for the home side to capitalise on.

It was a solid win on home soil, and one that demonstrated clearly the Magpie’s strong desire to win.

tating the way and the direction the ball moved all over the court.

Exact and deliberate passing into the ring resulted in the Magpie score constantly ticking over, with goalers Molly Redfern and Sienna Trotter putting on a shooting display, their accuracy a sign of their complete confidence.

Millie Watson and Laura Frewen did a sterling job in defence, intercepting and rebounding with determination.

The girls combined well, moving together in unison to thwart the Tatura goalers.

Lily Meehan and Abby Harrison made the most of all opportunities, controlling the wings and providing a vital link between defence and attack, and Chloe Salter, Meg Walker and Hannah Kubeil applied a constant, relentless pressure that their direct opponents found difficult to overcome.

At the final siren it was a win to Euroa by 19 lovely, lovely goals- just reward for solid teamwork over four quarters, and an excellent morale booster for players, coaches and spectators alike.

And increased morale will be just what the doctor orders over the coming weeks when Euroa have to meet up with ladder leaders Shepparton and then Echuca.

Let’s hope the Magpies can continue to play the confident brand of netball that was so evident on Saturday.

The first quarter was intense, ending 11/nine in favour of the Pies thanks to a great defensive partnership from Maggie Pittock and Tess Walker in GK & GD, and some accurate shooting from Ruby Watson in GA. The second quarter saw the Euroa girls put their foot down and pile on 18 goals to seven to take the half time lead 29/16.

The quarter was full of great transitional plays, led by some excellent running and defensive efforts from Irish Anderson in C, and Marnie Salter in WA. The third quarter saw more of the same, with great

defensive positioning from Scarlet Trotter in WD, and some fantastic passing from Issy Smith in WA. The final quarter was all Euroa, with Ella Hill and Ruby excelling in the goals, backed up by some wonderful defence from Oakley Paul in WD. After an outstanding game in GD, Tess came off midway through the quarter with a small cut, and was replaced

by Scarlet.

All nine girls combined to played a great game, the stand out game for the year so far.

Euroa continue winning streak GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS THE Euroa side continued on their winning way at the weekend with another home game - this time hosting Tatura.

Unfortunately the Tatura team were depleted somewhat which meant for a very lop-sided game indeed.

Coach Rowan set his team up from the start of the match to be ruthless in their intent - 27 goals to one later the team felt they delivered on their coaches request.

Bursting out of the blocks the Euroa team had two goals on the board through Will McIntosh off the wing before Tatura could catch their breath.

This relentless delivery of the football into the Euroa forward line meant the likes of Jett Trotter (four goals), Erish Uthayakumar (seven goals) and Tristan Davies (three goals) were dining out on multiple opportunities to kick truly.

Nate Trotter, Adam Giobbi and Ben Harrison were a few of the backline boys eager to keep pushing up the ground to get involved in the play.

Midfield stars Jack Hellier, Jacob Gleeson, Andrew Smith and Ben Giobbi were simply too talented, too strong and too determined to get the ball first.

Max Gleeson showed many a clean pair of hands as he ‘clinked’ mark after mark all over the ground and with the running ability of Andrew Bell and Marcus Varley the side was certainly firing on all cylinders.

With this team winning their match it meant Euroa FNC were able to have a ‘clean sweep’ of all nine grades of netball and football for the day, one to remember for sure.

A new challenge awaits this weekend as this team heads to Deakin Reserve on Saturday, July 2 for their clash with Shepparton Bears.

That fine bottle of wine that simply defies father time - Craig Bamford - lit up Memorial Oval yet again with his amazing aerobic capacity and ability to turn players inside out.

His four goals were one of a number of players who booted multiple majors throughout what was, in the end, a rout of the opposition.

Brandon Ebert showed his strength over the ball time and again and with the likes of a returning Brendan Allen coupled with the clever forward craft of Robbie Wilson and Ash Hobbs the Tatura defenders never really stood a chance.

This team performance really pleased coach McKernan as they now look towards a game on Deakin Reserve this Saturday against the Shepparton Bears outfit.

To ensure the contest went ahead Euroa committed to giving two players to Tatura each quarter which the boys handled tremendously and was greatly appreciated.

The first quarter was an even affair on a heavy Memorial Oval deck but it was the Magpies who capitalised early via some silky clearance work from Charlie Watson and Keily Jager.

Nic Hill was relishing his return to the forward 50 clunking multiple contested grabs and in turn converted on the scoreboard.

Backing up from a big win in the u16s, Sam Leigh and Talleigh McCabe were playing excellent football impacting the contest and rebounding the ball back into the Euroa forward half.

As the game progressed Euroa separated from the Tatura on the scoreboard kicking away to a ten-goal lead by three quarter time.

The last quarter proved to be much of the same for the Magpies who were dominating the game across all facets, but it was Cameron Walker who stole the show booting his first goal of the season with a very smart right foot snap.

This topped off a very successful day for the magpies who secured back-to-back victories for the first time in season 2022.

Charles Thomson began well with the first touch of the ball - tapping it out of the center to Sam Leigh for a fine move forward.

Everyone was scrambling to find their feet on the wet ground.

The backline players - Bailey Allen, Max Miller, Caid Miller and Dublin Anderson - readied themselves to go up against some of their own home-grown boys as Euroa had bolstered the Tatura team.

With the ball in Euroa’s forward line for the bulk of the quarter Baxter Fraser, Will Creevy and Nathan Butler were on fire.

Euroa 5-2-32 Tatura 0-0-0 With five goals secured under Euroa’s belt, Will Creevy and Charles Thomson readied themselves again in the center, before the siren.

Charles again used is height to get first touch.

MAKING WAVES: Jett Trotter’s keen eye allowed him to kick four of Euroa’s best goals for the weekend.

MAXIMUM EFFORT: Robbie Wilson can always be counted on to give 100%.

Tatura dug their heels in and managed to get more play in their forward line.

Ryan Hill showed his determination and was working hard with persistent contests to secure the ball for Euroa, he was well supported by his teammates Talleigh McCabe, Dublin Anderson, Bailey Allen, Max Miller and Harrison Mills.

Blake Hepworth did a great job shepherding play between Ryan Hill and Will Creevy resulting in Cohen Paul’s third goal.

Blake Hepworth kicked the ninth goal for Euroa after Cohen Paul and Will Creevy got it cleared from a scrum in the fifty line.

The ball was strongly contested before Blake Hepworth kicked his second goal.

Last goal for the quarter was a long kick from Darby Wilson.

Euroa 11-5-71 Tatura 0-0-0 Third quarter kicked off with a new dry ball.

Euroa had put in some good effort so far with Tatura yet to score.

Coach Matt Mills reminded them to play in front, direct the ball carefully down to the forwards Cohen Paul, Archie Wilson, Lucas McClure and Darby Wilson.

With Euroa determined to keep playing hard, Talleigh McCabe took a dive in the centre to get the ball into Euroa’s possession.

Charlie Hall was making some stoppages which gave Sam Leigh a long shot at goal from outside fifty.

Tatura’s backline secured the ball and made it into their fifty to secure their first goal.

Charlie Hall, Blake Hepworth, Max Miller, Charles Thomson and Kasuma Wolfenden were working away in the backline to try and stop any of Tatura’s efforts.

Tatura did manage to get the ball back into their forward line when Talleigh McCabe made a good save and drove it back down to Euroa’s forwards.

Euroa 15-9-99 Tatura 3-1-19 The final quarter started and the sun was starting to warm up the ground.

Talleigh McCabe was in the thick of things again with a good tackle, whilst Caid Miller, Charlie Hall and Sam Leigh make continual stoppages in the midline.

A strong mark by Baxter Fraser led to another Cohen Paul goal.

Charlie Hall got a long kick off to Cohen Paul who marked it and got another long kick down the field to Will Creevy, who got it back to Cohen Paul for a goal.

A wonderful clearance from the center by Baxter Fraser and pressure from both sides saw some good play in the forward and backline.

Euroa scored two more behinds as Tatura tried to keep the pressure on Euroa.

Tatura persisted - adding two more points to their tally.

Charlie Hall was getting his hands onto the ball at the last second on the line in the goal square, preventing Tatura from getting their fourth goal, adding another behind to the score.

A product from the Violet Town thirds, the veteran and key force in the Towners quest for glory will face Girgarre at home as he laces up for yet another game.

On Sunday, facing Undera with one win to their name the home side expected a comfortable win, and although missing quite few, the confidence was high to produce just that.

Step up Undera, the game was in the balance at three quarter time with the home side holding the ascendancy by just three points.

Facing a defeat that would spiral the team down the ladder the Towners took apart a gallant Undera in the last quarter kicking 8.9 to zero to win in the end by 60 points.

It wasn’t one way traffic un-

til the last half an hour with the Lions quicker and seemingly in control for most of the game.

Thankfully the “usuals”, Lach Baldwin, the Brazil twins Jack Exell & Matt McCarty stood firm, alongside Jett Berwick. Jack Exell coming back from covid kicked six, while Nick Brazil who loves a goal got five.

Lach Baldwin had 43 touches, 17 in the last quarter, McCarty 29, Nick Brazil 23 and brother Fintan 28, standouts these blokes.

Jett Berwick 23 touches across half back and Lach Ellis, 11 marks 16 kicks and numerous clearances.

If the Towners are to seriously challenge, they need to start better.

The game was not our usual style playing pretty scrappy and missing a lot of goals but was fantastic to see Eddie rise for the occasion kicking five earning him best on ground, while team manager Bryan pulled on the boots after a nine-year retirement chipping in with a couple, which was great to see everyone having fun for Eddies game.

Now it’s time to switch on, be serious, and to hold down our ladder opposition to set us up for the rest of the season.

Local AFL star Jamie Elliott shines bright against GWS

EUROA local and Collingwood staple Jamie Elliott has had a stellar performance against GWS on Saturday.

The Magpies held off the Giants to win by 11 points and claimed their fifth consecutive win, clambering their way back into the top eight.

“All we can do is play and train, we wanted to prepare as best we could,” Elliott told Foxfooty in a post-match interview.

“We spoke about leading into this game that this was one of the best preparations we’ve had with the amount of external noise going on right now.”

Elliott kicked an equal team high two goals for the match for the win, and said the team was committed and concentrated on the task at hand.

The win has made the 2022 AFL finals season a real possibility for the Magpies, sitting seventh on the ladder with a 9-5 record.
