Crossing supervisor Mark Stevens may be one of many who will be ‘out of work’ from term three.

School’s out at crossings STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is sending a strong message to the Victorian Government Department of Transport and Planning to step up and continue to deliver the School Crossing Supervision Program to ensure the safety of local kids.

At its March meeting last week council resolved to exit the school crossing program from July 10, which is costing ratepayers about $50,000 each year to deliver, despite it being a Victorian Government responsibility.

“The safety of our children

“This is why we have been paying for and delivering the School Crossing Supervision Program on behalf of the Department of Transport and Planning.

“It’s a program that has been keeping our children safe for many years and we’re proud of our school crossing supervisors who are greatly

valued by schools, parents and children.”

However, Cr Binks said there was part of the program that was not fair.

“Council pays about 62 per cent of the program costs to deliver this Victorian Government service,” she said.

“In Strathbogie Shire this means council and our ratepayers are spending about $50,000 a year to deliver a service that is not ours - it’s the responsibility of

the Victorian Government.

“This situation is being faced by all councils, and together with 28 other local government areas across the state, we have been advocating to seek the restoration of funding for this critical service.”

The advocacy campaign, led by the City of Monash, has attracted strong attention, but despite every effort there has been no commitment from the Victorian Government to

a fully funded and fully indexed program and efforts to meet with the responsible minister have been unsuccessful.

Presenting a report to council, manager community safety, Kristin Favaloro, said as part of the City of Monash advocacy campaign, meeting requests have been made to meet with the relevant Victorian Minister - this has also been unsuccessful.

Reliability and punctuality must accompany fare reduction WITH a reduction in V/ Line fares set to kick in from March 31, Nationals MPs have raised the need for improved service delivery, punctuality, reliability and investment.

After the Nationals announced a comprehensive fare reform policy across Victoria’s public transport network in the lead up to the November election, the Labor Party scrambled to put together a policy that aligned regional and metro train fares.

The Nationals Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, said the government needed to invest in infrastructure and services to meet demand.

“What I have regularly been contacted about is the overcrowding of trains on the Seymour and North East lines,” Ms Cleeland said.

“With changes to the V/ Line fare structure, I hope

the Victorian Government has completed some modelling on the projected patronage increase that may occur as a result of reduced fares.

“They must ensure quality of service is not further sacrificed, crowding is alleviated and investment in rolling stock is made to support growth in demand.”

Ms Cleeland said the $200 billion fee on the Andrews Government’s Suburban Rail Loop was a slap in the face for regional communities still dealing with substandard services.

“Funding the Suburban Rail Loop means less money for health, education, public transport and basic state services,” Ms Cleeland said.

“The primary concern of regional commuters is not a dreamt-up metro project that might be delivered decades in the future for hundreds of billions of dollars.

“What our region wants is efficient, punctual, reliable services and confidence that the public transport system won’t let them down.”

Speaking from parliament, the Nationals former spokesperson for Public Transport Danny O’Brien said fare relief was welcome but would not paper over the cracks in the regional rail network.

“We have now got the government once again following the Nationals when it comes to public transport policy,” Mr O’Brien said.

“They have come to the party with this policy of regional fare caps, which is good for those regions that have got reliable services.

“While reduced fares are great, what people really want is an actual service that turns up on time.

“They want a train that comes as a train and not as a coach.”

Farmers need guiding lights to realise their targets INDUSTRY leaders have joined calls alongside Indi independent federal MP Helen Haines asking for government support for farmers as they reduce emissions and take action on climate change.

Dr Haines has developed a plan for a network of 200 agricultural extension officers across 20 locations to support farmers to implement new technologies and practices that reduce emissions, and make decisions about engaging in the carbon market.

Following a motion on the plan in the House of Representatives on Monday, Dr Haines was joined by chief executive of the National Farmers Federation Tony Mahar and chief executive of Farmers for Climate Action Fiona Davis on Wednesday to make the pitch to the government.

“We’re absolutely 100 per cent supportive of more measures, more assistance, more support for farmers to actively engage, play their part,” Mr Mahar said.

“Farmers and agriculture can be part of the solution, when we’re talking about reducing emissions, being more sustainable, and importantly producing the food and fibre that Australian farmers are renowned worldwide for.”

Dr Davis said a survey by Farmers for Climate Action of more than 600 farmers

showed there was a need for Dr Haines’ plan.

“Farmers are looking for extension officer support, they need that support to be able to do the emissions reduction that is so important,” she said.

“We have a survey of over 600 farmers and the majority of those are not getting the information they need to do the work that they know is important on their farms.”

Dr Davis said Farmers for Climate Action was “right behind” Dr Haines’ plan, which “offers the opportunity to invest in extension and invest in that support for farmers”.

As the House of Representatives debates the Safeguard Mechanism Bill, which has a high reliance on offsets created by the agriculture industry, Dr Haines said her plan was the right idea at the right time.

“This is an evidence-based approach to a new transition,” Dr Haines said.

“In Australian agriculture, it’s a very new space that farmers are operating in.

“There’s noise coming from everywhere when it comes to offsetting.

“And it’s absolutely incumbent upon the Albanese Government to support our farmers through this transition.”

EUROA V/Liine commuters will save almost $40 on a daily ticket to and from Melbourne when capped pricing comes into effect in time for school holidays this Friday.

A return trip to Southern Cross Station for an adult will cost $6.70 same day return and $15.90 for a return ticket on another day, while concessions will only be $4.60 to return same day and $7.95 on another day.

This compares to the current cost of a V/Line return ticket from Euroa to Southern Cross Station at $45.20 per adult and $22.60 for concession.

It was one of the Labor Government‘s election campaign promises and Premier Daniel Andrews talked about the win for commuters at Southern Cross Station last week.

“It‘s about giving to regional Victorians the same fare equity that metropolitan Melbourne passengers have enjoyed for a long time,” he said.

“It‘s about making sure our regional families, whether it be coming to the football, attending a medical appointment or indeed travelling to work can have the same fare structure and the same deal that metro passengers have.”

Mr Andrew said COVID has impacted the number of regional people travelling to Melbourne – down 80 per cent of pre–COVID levels – and it was a good time to introduce the fare cap to boost these numbers.

“After talking to people across regional Victoria and even talking to my own Mum, who travels down on the train from Wang to attend specialist appointments and to visit her grandkids, it‘s a big difference to have that money in your pocket rather than in ours.

“That‘s exactly the right thing to do during a whole lot of challenges people are facing given the cost of living at the moment.”

Mr Andrews said it‘s not just about people travelling to Melbourne, it‘s about people heading out to regional Victoria and taking their

money with them, which boosts tourism.

The cap will also apply to interstate travel within 60km of the Victorian border, to ensure those living in border communities in New South Wales and South Australia benefit as well.

The fare cap applies to all PTV regional buses, town buses and V/Line trains and coaches.

With the scheduled rollout of more VLocity trains on Victoria‘s railways in 2024, Mr Andrews mentioned hundreds of additional services that will become operational; however, the Albury Line will luck out with no new services confirmed.

150 years of rail to the Goulburn Valley region

By BRUCE CUMMING VIOLET Town locals proudly gathered on Monday last week at the Violet Town railway station to quietly celebrate an important 150th anniversary, which enabled great change in the region.

Railway transport has been crucial to the Goulburn Valley and North East Victoria since its arrival at Violet Town on March 20, 1873.

The connection between Violet Town and Wodonga was completed a few months later providing rapid links for both passengers and freight for communities along the line with Melbourne.

This new North East line provided an important link to the Goulburn Valley region.

“The Violet Town Goods Shed was the closest freight hub to Shepparton for seven years, so was quite important in the early development of Shepparton and surrounding districts at that time, particularly up until the 1880s,” Brian Garrett from the Violet Town History Group, said.

“The North East line, which was then broad-gauge between Melbourne and Wodonga opened up a relatively fast connection to within a few kilometres of the NSW

border,” Violet Town historian Bruce Cumming said.

“It would be another 10 years before the NSW railway to Albury and the interstate linking bridge over the Murray River was completed.

“The connection across the river allowed both passengers and freight to be transferred directly between the two state railway systems at the newly built large Albury Station.

“This interchange system continued until 1962 when a standard gauge line through Victoria beside the existing line allowed non-stop connection directly between Sydney and Melbourne.”

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival at Violet Town of the North East line, the Violet Town History Group and the museum have just commenced a new exhibition.

“There is a range of photos, models, information boards and historic items displayed in the museum and we would love to welcome visitors over the next few months, and to chat with them about their rail experiences and recollections” Helena Gibson, museum chairperson, said.

Many travellers have put Violet Town on

their list of locations to visit, and to learn about the region including railway history.

Likewise many railway fans often affectionately known as “gunzels” have visited Violet Town over recent months, particularly to spend time at the Southern Aurora Memorial Garden to learn about the rescue efforts in 1969, and to pay tribute and respect to the many hundreds involved and affected.

“There is a constant flow of visitors to our Violet Town Cafe, and there are many who tell of their connection to the railways as they share their coffee and experiences,” Gary Abley, cafe owner and chairperson of the Southern Aurora committee, said.

“I send people up to the Aurora Garden and they are amazed by the information and the art there for which we won the Australian Street Art Award recently.

“The feedback is amazing, and people say they will be back and that they will recommend it to others, or visit again,” Mr Abley said.

The Southern Aurora Memorial Garden is always open, and the Violet Town Museum is open from Wednesday to Saturday.

Energy price hike hits families, small business REGIONAL Victorians are facing unprecedented energy price increases as a result of the mismanagement of the State Government, according to Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland.

The Victorian Essential Services Commission recently released Victorian Default Offer 2023-24 Draft Decision, which confirms shock electricity bill increases of 31.1 per cent for households and 33.2 per cent for small businesses.

For an average Victorian household, this represents a $426 annual increase and for an average small business, this represents a $1738 annual increase.

When announcing the establishment of the Victorian Default Offer in 2019, Premier Daniel Andrews said: “Hard working Victorians are sick of being ripped off by energy retailers, so we’re getting rid of these unfair deals”.

Ms Cleeland said the government had failed on this metric and had no energy plan.

“The premier promised to reduce prices yet has done exactly the opposite,” Ms Cleeland said.

HIGH RISES: Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland believes energy prices are continuing to increase across regional Victoria.

“Everyone across our region, including families and small businesses, will be poorer off at a time when they can least afford it.

“This shows the government has no plan to reduce power prices, no plan to transition to renewables and no plan to guar-

antee Victoria’s future energy supply.

“We should be able to cook dinner for the family, heat and cool their homes and keep the lights on without wondering if they can afford to do so.

“The Andrews Labor Government has failed to deliver a plan

for our energy market and Victorian families and businesses are the ones paying the cost.”

Ms Cleeland said local businesses and individuals are desperate for cost-of-living relief.

“I’ve had so many people contacting me about the Power Saving Bonus,” she said.

“They need energy bill relief as prices continue to skyrocket across the state.

“There are manufacturing businesses, farm business and small businesses in general that are really feeling the impact of increased power prices.”

The price hike comes as the State Government confirms it is seeking commonwealth funding to support its SEC energy plan.

To date, only $20 million of the promised $1 billion initial investment has been allocated.

Ms Cleeland said the State Government needs to explain where the money is coming from and who is going to fund it.

“It’s time for the government to explain to regional Victorians how it will work and how it will reduce their energy prices and guarantee Victoria’s future energy supplies,” Ms Cleeland said.

Ms Favaloro told councillors there has been widespread newspaper articles outlining the inequity in the program and the need for a fully funded service.

Last October council made the decision to exit the program from July 10.

Ms Favaloro said that at times council office staff have been taken away from normal duties to fulfil the role of crossing supervisors.

“We’re now at a loss,” Cr Binks said.

“We’re at the point where we think exiting the service is the only way we will get the attention of the department.

“We are serious about finding financial savings for our ratepayers, while also ensuring

this essential service continues to be delivered by the responsible State Government department to keep our children safe.”

Cr Andrews stated at the meeting that the main priority was the safety of the children and he believes this will not change within the next four months.

Cr Raeburn also said he can understand how the communities (within the shire) are disheartened.

“This is typical of how the government shifts the costs to the community,” he said.

Council manages five school crossing sites across the municipality, four of these on Victorian Government managed roads.

The only school

crossing located on a council managed road is on Goulburn Street in Nagambie.

In 2016 The Victorian Government committed to undertaking a broad strategic review of the program.

This has not occurred.

There has been no innovation or review since the program’s inception in 1975.

Council will continue to manage its legislated responsibility to inspect, maintain and repair the school crossing infrastructure, which includes signage and road markings.

In the meantime the Department of Transport will be handed back the program from this shire in July.

$67.5m homeless support confirmed for support agencies THE region’s main housing access support agency has endorsed the Federal Government’s decision to fill a $67.5 million funding shortfall for homelessness services.

Uncertainty for homelessness service providers like BeyondHousing emerged as funding for the Equal Remuneration Order (ERO) supplementation for homelessness services was due to expire in June 2023, however, Housing Minister Julie Collins confired the funding wou-

uld continue on Friday.

BeyondHousing chief executive officer Celia Adams welcomed the commitment and thanked the Federal Government for listening to the concerns of organisations on the frontline of the work to end homelessness.

“This is critical funding for the sector to continue our work during the worst housing crisis we’ve ever faced,” he said.

“We have just seen the Census data show that homelessness is worsen-

ing in regional Victoria, so we are relieved to see jobs of frontline homelessness workers saved.

“We can continue providing critical support for the increasing number of people experiencing homelessness.

“We thank the government for listening to the concerns raised by our sector and committing to resourcing our critical role ending homelessness and addressing the housing crisis.

“This commitment gives

us the security to continue our important work.

“Having certainty means we can go back to work finding and creating pathways to home for another 124 regional Victorian households who came to us for support this week alone.”

Council to Homeless Persons CEO Deborah Di Natale said the Federal Government had made the right call.

“This is a welcome decision which ensures about 200 homelessness support staff will be able to continue

their invaluable work in Victoria,” she said.

“The continuation of this federal funding means $23.5 million will go towards Victorian homelessness workers’ wages.

“That’s absolutely crucial funding at a time when official Census data shows homelessness in Victoria rose 24 per cent over the past five years.

“More than 30,600 people are homeless in Victoria it’s never been more important to have strong support services in place.

“This decision means that services can provide lifechanging support that allows people to find homes, support families and build their lives free from violence.

“We congratulate Minister Collins for listening to the voices of this femaledominated workforce which is overwhelmingly on modest incomes.

“This decision will help workers assist thousands of Victorians who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of doing so.”

Strathbogie homelessness on the rise HOMELESSNESS in Victoria is at alarming levels, with new data showing it is 24 per cent higher than five years ago.

New Census data released last week revealed 30,660 people are homelessness in Victoria, confirming the urgent need for a strategy to end homelessness.

The overall numbers are believed to be the state’s most accurate picture of homelessness because the Census was conducted during Victoria’s lockdown, allowing more people to be reached and counted.

And it was reported last week that Strathbogie Shire has not escaped the trend of rising numbers living either as homeless, couch surfing, or roughing it.

Strathbogie’s homeless numbers are some 26 per cent higher than they were in 2016 - two per cent over the Victorian average.

The Nationals Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, weighed in on these latest figures and has asked the Housing Minister (Colin Brooks MP) for local data on public and social housing.

“I’ve asked the Minister to come back to me with some key data on how many dwellings have been built under the Big Build right across the Goulburn Valley, Bendigo and the North East,” Ms Cleeland said.

Ms Cleeland said she was seeing firsthand the real world impact of the public housing shortage.

“I’ve been contacted by multiple distressed individuals who have been waiting incredibly long periods for a roof over their heads,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Negotiating the bureaucracy at an incredibly challenging time for people needing housing is proving to be

very frustrating.

“The issues in regional housing in terms of affordability, rental markets and public housing are acute and more needs to be done.”

In response to new ABS 2021 Census Homelessness data Mission Australia’s state director Nada Nasser has called for both the commonwealth and Victorian governments to urgently commit to building more social and affordable homes.

Ms Nasser said these 30,660 people were staying in

severely overcrowded dwellings, refuges, boarding houses or temporarily with friends or family on Census night.

The rise in homelessness was largely driven by people living in boarding houses (8599 in 2021 up from 4406 in 2016) or other temporary lodgings (1583 in 2021 up from 108 in 2016).

Around three per cent of the homeless population in Victoria are rough sleeping.

crowded housing.

Around one in eight homeless people (13 per cent) in Victoria are aged 55 years and over.

Around 123 young people aged 12-18 are couch surfing on any given night.

“The severe shortage of social and affordable housing, a private rental market that is extremely unaffordable across metro and regional Victoria and a soaring cost of living are accelerating the housing and homelessness,” he said.

“Those on the lowest and even moderate incomes are increasingly left without an affordable and secure home to live in.

“Behind these numbers are thousands of individuals and families who are living in the most precarious situations, forced to sleep in severely overcrowded dwellings, on a couch at a friend’s house, or even one of the three per cent who are rough sleeping on the street or in a car.”

Council to Homeless Persons chief executive officer Deborah Di Natale said the situation required an immediate response.

“This alarming surge in homelessness must be the catalyst for the State Government to act urgently by continuing to invest - and there are solutions,” Ms Di Natale said.

“These grim numbers show exactly why the Victorian Government must fund highly successful programs like From Homelessness to a Home, which provides stable housing and support for people who are sleeping rough.

“With the most accurate picture of homelessness we’ve ever had, it’s clear a comprehensive strategy is needed to end homelessness.”

The new data has reiterated the need for the Victorian Government to make commitments to end homelessness in the May State Budget.

Well deserved award for Helen Haines I WANT to congratulate Helen Haines our member for Indii on being awarded the 2022 McKinnon Emerging Political Leader of the Year 2022.

Helen has supported the people of Indi well and has often been a presence in Euroa regarding among other things, ‘the underpass debate’.

She continues to speak up for our electorate and also been a voice for change, having spoken recently at the ‘The Voice Picnic’.

Helen, who is one of a team of Independents who worked hard on the proposal to parliament for an integrity commission, and has, I believe, shown her strong belief in transparency, honesty and accountability.

Those are the qualities I admire, and I think she deserves this award absolutely.

I’m proud to be in her electorate and look forward to hearing more from Helen Haines.

What are we doing to our forests?

I AM a volunteer with the Strathbogie CFA, a first lieutenant and crew leader.

I am often in a position to call the shots as to whether it’s safe for my tanker to go into an area to extinguish a blaze.

We are most often the first responders into the Strathbogie State Forest, chasing a lightning strike, or an unextinguished campfire.

I consider myself fluent in the language of the forest, I have spent a great deal of time there.

It is with dismay then, that I visited the forest this week and looked at some of the areas scheduled to be burnt.

Driving down Gerars Track heading west, to my right are the results of the 2015 burn and to my left the scheduled burn of a few weeks’ time.

The difference in the fuel load of these two pieces of country is remarkable.

The area burnt eight years ago is wall to wall Cassinia thicket, with Bracken and Silver Wattle, while the unburnt country is forest with extensive, open areas of native grasses and scattered shrubs.

I know without doubt which of these two areas would burn more fiercely, I know which area I would be more reluctant to take my crew into, and it isn’t the country burnt eight years ago.

Scientists tell me that these late summer hot burns destroy about 20 per cent of the old growth trees, they tell me that these planned burns dry out our forest, that the fire risk is reduced for a

Equitable access to services are a must TRANSPARENCY and accountability in government are key to ensuring that every community has equitable access to services, no matter their postcode.

Our crumbling roads need ongoing investment rather than reduced speed limits and our regional health services need adequate funding to ensure regional Victorians can have better care closer to home - in a nutshell, regional Victoria deserves its fair share.

And yet, we’ve seen the Andrews Labor Government move the goal posts on its commitments right across the state.

Last week, the Health Minister visited Shepparton to celebrate the “final stage” of Goulburn Valley Health’s redevelopment despite it only being the end of stage one and further funding being needed from the State Government for stage two.

This second phase includes vital upgrades to the hospital’s Oncology Ward, yet Labor’s celebrating when the job’s half done and hasn’t committed to funding stage two.

Similarly, down south of the state, Labor has delivered a $300 million glossy brochure through the Latrobe Valley Authority’s draft Gippsland Transition 2035 plan.

It’s a document that should be a blueprint to investing in the Latrobe Valley and provide certainty amid job losses, instead it’s a lifeless document that fails to commit

to one tangible outcome that benefits the community.

It provides no detail about steps that will be taken to shore-up the local economy, and no detail around establishing new industries or creating sustainable long-term replacement jobs for workers after Labor’s closure of the valley’s largest employers.

In the north of the state, we’ve seen Labor back out of its original commitment to the Murray Basin Rail Project after it ran over budget.

Producers moving goods to port are now forced to use road freight, placing further pressure on our decaying road network and forcing farmers to pay more to get fresh produce on supermarket shelves.

Add to this the state’s skyrocketing debt and Labor’s 44 new or increased taxes introduced since 2014 - placing more pressure on your household bills - and it’s any wonder regional Victorians have trust issues with Daniel Andrews and his Labor Government.

NAPLAN highlighted decline in education THE long term decline in students’ reading, mathematics and science as outlined in OECD Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is highly concerning and a trend that must be reversed.

PISA is recognised across the world as the most reliable and comprehensive indicator of students’ capabilities.

Victoria’s most recent NAPLAN figures highlighted the devastating impact the world’s longest lockdown had on Victorian students.

Across 2020 and 2021, Victorian students experienced seven consecutively interrupted school terms and up to 171 days of lost learning during Victoria’s record breaking lockdowns.

Consequently, Victorian students have recorded the largest drop in educational outcomes of any state in the nation, with significant drops in year 5 numeracy and grammar and year 9 spelling.

I am deeply passionate about the wellbeing and educational outcomes of students, and the recruitment and retention of our teachers.

Given the serious pressures on our students, and professional staff, I am supporting the push for an Upper House Parliamentary Inquiry into our education system.

The concerning decline must be investigated - Victoria must look at best practice in other jurisdictions and educational settings to improve outcomes and wellbeing for our students and teachers.

couple of years, but for no more.

That the species that return after the fire, are those that thrive on fire, yes Dogwood, Bracken and Silver Wattle.

They tell me that these areas are important habitat for the Greater Glider, the largest gliding mammal in Australia.

They are listed as endangered and that many will die because of the coming burns.

I am only a volunteer firefighter who knows the forest, yet I don’t get it.

It seems that these fuel reduction burns in the Strathbogie State Forest do more damage than good.

It feels like DEECA are asleep at the wheel, hell bent on reaching their yearly targets.

It feels to me like an industry has been created around the widespread burning of our native forests, that for the sake of a hectare target they would ignore the evidence right in front of them.

There isn’t much of this forest left, it’s an island, an ark, and it holds one of the most incredible animals in the country, yet for the sake of a flawed idea, the Victorian Government chooses to burn it.

Please do not take my word for this - go for a drive and see for yourself.

FOLLOWING a community meeting in February, the Avenel Local Emergency Action Plan (LEAP) steering committee has reviewed the feedback provided by residents.

The local steering group has been collaborating with emergency agencies and Strathbogie Shire Council to produce a LEAP for the Avenel community.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the group reviewed community member’s ideas and comments around themes that reflect the key areas of resiliency, emergency preparedness, emergency response and relief.

“The group is coordinating

the development of a LEAP at the local level to ensure the plan reflects the Avenel community,” she said.

“We recently presented the collated information from the February community meeting to the steering committee for review.

“A discussion was held to begin identifying the ways in which the community responses could inform the content and potential actions of the Avenel LEAP “Another steering committee meeting will be held soon to determine these actions.”

Cr Binks said the wider Avenel community, and beyond, would

get the chance to provide feedback once the draft LEAP had been produced.

“We will release this document to the public for feedback for a period of time so stay tuned as to when you will be able to review and provide comment on the Avenel LEAP,” she said.

Jeeva began her role with council in July 2022.

“I have never worked with a local council, and this was something very different to the corporate jobs I had before,” she said.

“To me, council is such a big organisation, it’s like running a little country essentially.

“That makes it a great place to work because you get exposed to so many different disciplines.”

It was Jeeva’s father who first encouraged her to become an engineer, after she grew up seeing him work in the construction industry.

“Curiosity made me question a lot of things on the designs and I was always amazed by seeing these designs come to reality,” she said.

“I grew up in the Middle East and whenever I travelled around I used to see a lot of high density buildings

STRATHBOGIE Shire Council’s senior engineer Jeeva Ali didn’t expect she would move to Australia to pursue her career, but she is glad she did.

Last week was Cultural Diversity Week (March 1123) and Jeeva reflected on the many different skills, talents, interests, beliefs and needs of the various groups that make up Australia.

She said Cultural Diversity Week was about appreciating and respecting those differences, helping us to understand other cultures and different perspectives.

After studying a degree in engineering overseas, Jeeva said she struggled to find a graduate position.

“The journey has been slow but big,” he said.

“I have five years’ experience within the industry.”

“I started my Australian career as a graduate estimator with a small firm in Melbourne, where I learned essential engineering skills and how to deal with external consultants.

“I worked as a site engineer for Regional Roads, North East Victoria, where

The branch now sets up a table in Binney Street and collects donations from the public.

“Our very generous people of Euroa and outsiders this year has donated $3685 to the appeal,” president of the Euroa branch, Chris John said.

Red Cross members were extremely pleased with this amount, as we know money is very tight.

“We thank everyone for their generous donations,” Ms John said.

RV friendly site questioned PLANS to provide a Recreational Vehicle (RV) Friendly Site for Violet Town have been put on hold for the time being by Strathbogie Shire Council.

The RV friendly site came under discussion at last week’s council meeting where several questions from the public were responded to, as well as councillors’ discussion.

Councillors were in agreeance that a RV friendly site would be ‘terrific’ for the town and would such a site encourage tourism.

However, in passing the officers’ recommendation it was also stated that it was sensible to put this project on hold.

A motion put to council was to: 1. Note the progress of the Violet Town Recreational Friendly Site project.

2. Place project support on hold until such time that there is

a formal community led RV site governance group established.

3. Once a community led governance group is established, authorise officers to recommence the provision of support and guide to the project.

One resident asked council why wasn’t due process followed from the outset in regards to community engagement and can residents be assured that process will be followed in future for any community projects in the Violet Town area?

And further questions from another resident asked was an area near the dump point ever considered as an RV Site and if not, why not?

Mayor Laura Binks, through the manager for community and culture, Amanda Tingay, responded on behalf of council saying members of the community that have championed this project have worked hard to

provide information and gather input from the community.

“This is a community led and driven project and, as such, council’s policies do not apply to community groups,” she said.

“Members of council’s communications and engagement team are willing to provide guidance, if requested.”

Cr Binks also said that policy guides for community engagement with the aim to ensure absolute best practice were in place.

“We also recently established a community panel which will provide input into our decision making with representation across the shire, including members from the Violet Town community.

“Once again, for community led projects, council’s policies do not apply to community groups, but please be assured that our communications and engagement team are willing to

provide guidance,” she said.

Response regarding the dump point was that several sites were considered.

The dump point was required to be located close to a sewer line and council worked with community members to find the best site.

It was reported that council officers had investigated potential suitable sites in Violet Town, identifying the only partially suitable site being an area at the recreation reserve along Tulip Street.

Currently the recreation reserve does not have a committee of management in place, resulting in council becoming responsible for management of the site.

The land is owned by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), previously known as DELWP.

VIOLET TOWN CHAR: Member for Eildon, Annabelle Cleeland with locals at the recent ‘Tea & Chat’ session at Violet Town Community House.

Violet Town hosts MP for Tea and Chat session MEMBERS of the Violet Town community recently raised important local matters with State Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, during her ‘Tea & Chat’ session at the Community House.

Ms Cleeland thanked the community for sharing their vision for the region and community spirit.

“Violet Town is an inspiring

example of a community that comes together to work towards common goals,” Ms Cleeland said.

“From discussing local issues to brainstorming new ideas, we had some productive discussions and some laughs too.

“Conversations ranged from Honeysuckle Health to local community group infrastructure to the ‘spin king’ Shane

Warne’s connection to Violet Town.”

In addition to parliamentary sittings, electorate events and meeting, Ms Cleeland said she would make no booking drop-in sessions a feature of her work throughout the region.

“A big thank you to everyone who dropped by for a chat and contributed to the community-focused conver-

sation,” Ms Cleeland said.

“I will be setting up drop-in sessions in towns across the region to provide locals the opportunity to say hello and discuss what’s important to individuals, businesses, and the community.

International Day of Forests celebrated IT was International Day of Forests last week - a great reminder for political decisionmakers to recognise the role forestry plays in meeting Victoria’s emission reduction targets, chief executive officer of the Victorian Forest Products Association (VFPA) Deb Kerr said.

The International Day of Forests 2023 theme was ‘forests and health’.

“Forests provide many recreational, social, environmental, and economic benefits,” Ms Kerr said.

“And forest products help us live our daily lives better.

“They supply us with house frames, furniture, food and medi-

cine, paper, cardboard packaging, and other essentials such as sanitary items and tissues”.

The forest sector generates jobs for at least 33 million people and forest products are used by billions according to Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

“A healthy forest is an actively managed forest,” Ms Kerr said.

“Active forest management should be tenure blind.

“It includes thinning, regular removal of fuel load to prevent bushfires and managing invasive pests and species. “It is how we ensure a healthy forest for our forest dependent plants

and animals.

“Indeed, it is how Traditional Owners have managed our forest landscapes over tens of thousands of years,” Ms Kerr said.

Investing in the local forestry sector benefits everyone.

Growing more trees in plantations and native forests captures carbon and secures the supply of sustainable timber and wood fibre.

This enhances Victoria’s sovereign capability while creating jobs for thousands of people, many in rural and regional areas.

“With the Commonwealth Games coming up and population growth forecast for our state,

the demand for wood fibre will increase as well,” Ms Kerr said.

“The opportunity for Victoria to build housing from locally grown wood, for athletes and new Victorians alike, is huge.

“On International Day of Forests, I called on all policy and political decision-makers to better recognise the role of Victorian forestry to fight climate change and meet our emission reduction targets - as Prof Chubb recently stated forestry is “the only pathway known to science that has the immediate capacity - immediate capacity - to remove greenhouse gases - and what’s more, it does this service at no cost.”

2023 and craft Euroa Kinder Easter ready Art appreciated by viewers

THE Euroa Kindergarten kids are anxiously waiting for Easter to come along so they can enjoy the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Education leader at the kinder, Michelle Leech, said plans are being made for the kids to enjoy this annual event which will be held on the last day of the term, Thursday, April 6 for both three and four-year-old groups.

In the meantime the kids of both groups are having loads of fun in their new play space - a sand pit, rideable bike path and a rock and water chanel - like a creek bed with a hand pump.

Ms Leech said the upgraded play space has been provided through a State Government grant which was received at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

“The work had to be put off until restrictions were fully lifted and then getting the contractors,” Ms leech said.

Work commenced on the new play space at the beginning of this year and was quickly completed.

Prior to the upgrade the children could not enjoy riding trikes and scoots around the pathway as it was gravel and too rough.

Now with a coloured concrete smooth path the kids are thoroughly enjoying navigating the course which leads around the new play space and past the climbing frames of the play areas.

At present the kindergarten has 52 children enrolled for both three and four-year-old groups which are rotated over

five days giving each child 15 hours of early childhood education weekly.

The Euroa Kindergarten is a part of the Goulburn Regional Pre-School Association (GRPSA) which provides kindergarten and early childhood services throughout the Goulburn Valley Region.

MORE than 180 art and craft and precious collectable items were on display at the inaugural Kelvin Grove Village Art and Craft Show with a Difference on Saturday in their village hall in Nagambie.

Antiques, paintings, quilted items, collectables of many sorts like jugs, dolls, embroidery, sewn, knitted and crocheted garments, and memorabilia to a model steam boat and model rail diorama were on show.

The residents pulled out all stops to show their talents or treasures of bygone eras and to show that many of them are still pursuing their artwork in their 70s and 80s.

Some of the ladies surpassed themselves with their cooking delights for afternoon tea for the patrons who came along and enjoyed seeing what the residents brought along to showcase their interesting lie experiences, talents and memories.

Thanks goes to the local businesses and individual residents who donated prizes for the raffle that raised funds for the Village Mother’s Day afternoon tea dance entertainer for May 16.

The residents thank all who supported their first art and craft show and were happy to receive such positive feedback for their efforts that took days to display in their hall.

They went home satisfied that they had shared some beautiful objet d’ art, and many of their treasures, many handmade or painted or collected over the years.

2023 Schools raise dollars for RCH

EASTER BUNNY MAY HOP IN: The Ruffy CFA brigade will again be supporting the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and will be serving fish and chips lunch plus family entertainment.

Give to the RCH so kids can grow and get well sooner RUFFY CFA will once again get behind the annual Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and are offering all a seafood lunch (fish and chips).

CFA member Ann LahertyHunt said they have a wonderful time hosting the seafood lunch and all are welcome.

Lunch is available from 12.30pm onwards with a donation of adults $20 and kids (under 16) $5.

Along with a delicious lunch there will be a jumping castle, a Easter Egg Hunt, a raffle and a silent auctions with goods on offer including hay, a drone video package, firewood and a

local B&B voucher.

“Why not have a relaxed lunch in the bush (at the Ruffy CFA Shed) and help out with a very worthy cause,” Ms Laherty-Hunt said The RCH Good Friday Appeal raises millions of dollars each year to help in refurbishing the hospital’s equipment and so it can continue to provide world class care for children across Victoria and beyond.

The appeal will be held of course on Good Friday, April 7, and will see the generous donations of many Victorians across the whole of the state tallied up with all funds raised during the campaign period

SCHOOLS across the Strathbogie shire are getting behind the Good Friday Appeal and raising funds to go to the Royal Children’s Hospital annual appeal.

At Euroa Primary the SRC has planned a Crazy Hair Day on Thursday, April 6, the last day of term one.

Students will need a gold coin to join the crazy hair fun.

Students are raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital because some have families and students go to that hospital.

These events are being organised the the SRC representatives, Charlotte B, Estella, Charlotte K, Curtis, Logan,

Ruby-Rose, Olivia, Ethan, Ollie, Harrison, and Jye. At Avenel Primary School is also getting behind the annual RCH appeal.

School principal Ross Davis was in Melbourne recently and witnessed the ‘Run for the Kids’ which was held in the city.

“It was a great event that raised money for the children’s hospital,” he said.

“It certainly ties in with the school value of giving something back.

“Our school supports the Children’s Hospital with the proceeds of the Easter raffle being donated to the Good Friday appeal.

“This is certainly Giving

Something Back.”

At Nagambie Primary School students, staff and parents are being urged to buy up quick for tickets in the Easter raffle which will support The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Salt water regatta puts out a tough challenge for Nagambie rowers

By DIANE GRANT THE Gazette caught up with David Andrews of the Nagambie Rowing club last weekend.

He was one of the club members who acquitted themselves well at the Footscray Salt Water Regatta on Saturday.

While The Head of The River Rowing Regatta was big news in Nagambie on Saturday also Nagambie rowers headed south to Footscray and their Saltwater Regatta.

The Footscray Rowing Club is positioned on the Maribyrnong River, adjacent to Flemington Race Course, and makes Dave Andrews said “it makes for a ‘bonzer’ venue”.

He continued on by stating “the 800 metre course has its challenges, and it is a real skill to steer a straight course”.

“Most crews covered extra ground and a bit of zigging and zagging was not uncommon.

“Still most of the crews made it to the finish line without incident.

“The weather let us know that winter was not too far away, with the biting wind, present most of the day.

“Record race times were also gained on the day as the wind came straight up the course, giving boats a push, via the tail wind.”

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Nagambie rowers proved themselves to be amongst the best in the state while competing at the recent Footscray Saltwater Regatta at Footscray (from left) Leigh McIntyre, Dave Andrews, John Strapps, Andy Horsburgh, with their winners’ medals.

Stats of the day stated there were 76 events over the day, with 425 athletes competing, most in more than one race.

All classes of boats competed (single and double sculls, fours/quad sculls and eights).

Dave Andrews was pleased how the Nagambie rowers acquitted themselves quite well

and said how they should be pleased with the results.

He spoke of the Masters Female Quad that saw off the opposition to win their race and receive the ‘gold’ medal.

“The old blokes (61, 65x2, 75) also gave their race a good shake, and took the chocolates,” he said.

“Two of our Nagambie’s young men also came down and put in great rows, in the open classes.

“Ben Sheldon and Boyd Newnham put in solid performances in their single scull races.

“Boyd was agonisingly close in both his races, and showed some ‘grit’ to stick with the more experienced rowers in the conditions.

“Ben won his heat and final in the B grade scull and had some pretty ‘hot’ competition from the other scullers.

“He overcame his relative inexperience and kept some notable scullers at bay.

“Both the lads are coached

by Nagambie local identity, Bill Day. “Bill puts a lot of time into a number of younger rowers, and was on-hand on the day, to support Ben and Boyd.”

Rowing is a very welcoming sport and you can travel the country or the world, and get a row just about anywhere.

Shepparton Rowing Club for various reasons is a bit light-on at the moment and has some of their rowers training and competing with Nagambie club members.

Tom Nalder competed in Shepparton colours at the regatta, but Nagambie claimed him as one of our own.

Longwood seniors ‘hang out’ at Hanging Rock THE Longwood Seniors Club members, along with quite a few guests from Seymour ventured to Hanging Rock recently for a day’s outing.

Making up a full bus load, the seniors were met on arrival at their destination by park ranger Shane who explained what the group were going to do, or try to do, for the day.

First ranger Shane showed the group through the information centre which explained some of the history of the rock as well as the many activities which are held at the Hanging Rock throughout the year, the likes of two horse race meetings a year.

Other events held at Hanging Rock include outdoor concerts where quite a lot of wellknown entertainers perform at the base of the rock.

After ranger Shane explained a little more of the History, it was time to adventure (for those who were fit enough) up to the top of the rock.

“Now don’t forget this is the Longwood Seniors and most of this group are over 70 years old,” club president John Macklin said.

Ranger Shane mentioned that the first half of the walking climb was asphalted and

“Everyone in the group made it to this point with a bit of a struggle,” Mr Macklin said.

Then ranger Shane mentioned the next half of the climb was steeper, plus 120 steps to get to the top.

“To my astonishment half the group members said they would follow the ranger while

the other half turned back down to sit and rest while waiting for the braver to return,” Mr Macklin said.

“The half that went to the top sure surprised everyone considering the age of the group.”

Once returning to the bottom of the hill again an enjoyable lunch was had by all before venturing back home.

Euroa Autumn Beef Show leads the way

By LYNN ELDER NOW in its third year, the Euroa Autumn Beef Show held on the Labour Day long weekend continued to attract quality beef cattle with a Charolais taking out the 2023 Supreme Exhibit award.

The show represents an opportunity to showcase entries looking to compete at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney this year.

Hosted by the Euroa Agricultural Society on Sunday, March 12 at the Euroa Showgrounds the event was a great success according to the society’s chief cattle steward and Beef Show organiser, Leanne Colclough in terms of entries and crowd attendance.

“As in previous years we attracted 130 cattle, all of a very high quality and representing 15 different breeds, with exhibitors coming from throughout Victoria, southern NSW and as far away as Yanco in NSW,” Ms Colclough said.

Two show rings covering four different categories were in operation with one featuring British cattle, and the other Bos Indicus, European and Small Breed cattle.

There was also a feature class where exhibitors assembled a group of three beasts from the same breed to compete against each other for the overall best group.

Ms Colough said many of these cattle have been to Canberra Royal and then will go on to compete at Sydney Royal at Easter.

“This was one of the reasons why following a discussion between myself and cattle committee members in 2019 to run an autumn beef show so exhibitors could prepare for the Sydney Royal,” she said.

Although the October Euroa Agricultural Show runs cattle classes, it is too late for the Melbourne Roy-

The culmination of the show was the awarding of ‘Grand Champions’ of each of the British, Bos Indicus, European and Small Breeds all vying for the prestigious title of “2023 Supreme Exhibit”.

This year the Supreme Champion of the show was Challambi Sargent, owned by Challambi Charolais founder Nigel Spink from Tooma, NSW, led by Trent Storm.

A PRELIMINARY report on Strathbogie Shire Council electoral structure review has been released.

An electoral representation advisory panel has been reviewing the electoral structure of Strathbogie Shire Council, as part of a program reviewing 39 Victorian local councils.

The preliminary report on the review of Strathbogie Shire Council was published last week, and the response submissions period is now open.

Response submissions should address the options presented in the preliminary report.

People interested in making a response submission can use the public submission tool or view other submission options on the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) website at vec.vic.gov.au/ strathbogie If people ask to speak in support of their response submission, an online public hearing will be held for Strathbogie Shire Council on Wednesday, April 19.

More information about the public hearing will soon be available on the council review page of the VEC website at vec.vic. gov.au/strathbogie The panel encourages all Victorians in the councils under review to contribute to the review process and have their say.

All response submissions for the review of Strathbogie Shire Council must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, April 12.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD BOWLS EUROA BOWLS CLUB

By AUDREY MCINTOSH AFTER the excitement of winning the Saturday division two pennant shield, bowlers have continued to enjoy social bowls.

In addition to this many bowlers have decided to take part in the district tournaments happening in the area.

Last Sunday a most interesting and competitive match was played in the ladies pairs between Anne Sutcliffe/ Kerrie Steers and Mary Steen/Jan Sheagold.

Each of the players played excellent bowls in a low scoring match that lasted two and a half hours with Anne and Kerrie winning 15/9.

As has been a feature in past years, there will be social bowls on Good Friday to support the Royal Children’s hospital, this will commence at 1pm.

The clubs annual general meeting is advertised for Wednesday, May 24 and will now be held at the Euroa Golf Club.

Presentation day will be held on Sunday, April 16 and if weather permits bowls will played, commencing at 1pm.

GOLF AVENEL GOLF CLUB

By LYNN CARRACHER WHILE there hasn’t been any golf to report on yet, members have been very busy out on the course getting it ready for opening day this coming Saturday, April 1.

There was a great roll up last Saturday which meant a lot more boxes on the “to do list” were ticked off.

A big thank you to all who have at-

tended the working bees or have been able to get out on the course at other times, it all helps and we will all enjoy the benefits.

The course is looking very neat and tidy and will only improve with a bit more rain.

Maintenance is ongoing though, so if you find yourself with a bit of spare time, please call out to the course and do what you can.

There’s always cleaning up to do under the trees.

Our junior golfers have been back on the course for the past few weeks and going along very nicely.

Eight players attended on Saturday morning and it was another great week scores wise.

Riley Wall came out victorious with a nett 22, continuing his excellent form since the start of the season.

Well done Riley.

Second place went to Abbey Eagles with nett 23 and she also collected the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza voucher for an awesome drive, being her first shot of the day.

Rayden Hannigan took out 3rd place with a nett 24 - looks like all that golf with dad is paying off.

On Sunday our men’s pennant team travelled to Kilmore to take on Hidden Valley.

Unfortunately they went down 3/2, with captain Jed and Pres Dale being the winners for the day.

It was a pretty close match all the same with Adam and Mark going down 2 and 1 and Tim’s match was 3 and 1.

As Saturday is opening day for the club, we have organised a sponsored event for the juniors thanks to PW Electrical, to kick off the day.

The youngsters will be playing a 2-person ambrose and are encouraged to bring a friend to play with or a part-

ner can be organised on the day.

As previously mentioned, opening day is this Saturday and we extend an invitation to any golfers to come along and enjoy Avenel’s legendary hospitality.

The afternoon golfers will also be playing a 2-person ambrose and players are asked to be at the club by 11 to register.

There will be a draw for partners but if you’ve got someone in mind we can work around that too.

The official opening will take place at 11.30am with golf to commence straight after.

Members are asked to bring a small plate of goodies to share for afternoon tea.

Finally, we have a couple of members on the sick list and we send them our best wishes.

Dave Baker took out division two with Net 73.

Balls down the line went to Matt Mills with 72 from scratch.

A four way countback with net 74s split Dav Mackrell, Keith Seeber, Dale McIntosh and Kevin Mead.

Mills and Roper took home the drive and pitches.

Melissa Eddy continues to impress 85-16 net 69.

She also had least putts with just 26 and also collected both drive and pitches.

double for the family.

Brendan Redfern’s winning weekend began on Friday evening with 21 points at twilight.

Dale McIntosh had 20 and twilight regulars Seeber and Walters both had 19.

Mick Keeley had the round of the week with 40 stableford points to win the Wednesday competition.

Paddy McCarthy was the only other player to beat his handicap with 37.

A small field played the Ladies Wednesday Competition which was won by Susan Harding with 37 points.

Euroa men’s three pennant teams started their season on Sunday.

The scratch team had an uncustomary (0) - (5) loss and both reserve teams went down (2) - (3).

Winners on the day were Paddy McCarthy, Richard Eddy, Owen Robinson and Scott Watson.

On Monday, the club hosted the first day of the Eliza Forlonge event which attracts an annual field of Melbourne based visitors to the Euroa course on Monday followed by Strathbogie competition on Tuesday.

Euroa played host to the annual Dalhousie Teams event on Sunday with a field of more than 120 players.

Goulburn Valley Vets had a big day on the course which is playing beautifully after some nice autumn rain.

Friday will be the last twilight event with daylight saving coming to an end with next Saturday being the captains and presidents day of match play events.

NAGAMBIE WOMEN’S GOLF THERE were 11 players for a round of stroke and for the monthly medal.

The winner of the monthly medal was one of our newest members Kylie Carmichael.

Kylie was also the winner of A and C grades with 120-43-77net.

The B grade winner was Sue Verge with 112-28-84.

Annette Mills took the honours in the 9-hole competition with 52-13.538.5.

18-hole balls down the line went to Kylie 77net, Irene Keogh 80net and Annette 81net.

9-hole balls down the line went to Annette 38.5net, Irene 40net on a c/b from Moz Fowler 40net.

There were no n/p winners.

Chicken Run Results - March 23 The thunderstorms kept the numbers low.

We only had 16 players and the winner was Alan Anderson 46-10.535.5net.

N/p on the 3rd was Alan Schroder and 6th was Chris Roberts.

NAGAMBIE MEN’S GOLF IT was a tough grid at Nagambie golf club with a par event being played +1 was the best score returned with three players needing to be separated with a countback.

The eventual winner was Trevor Burt beating home Jeremy Ezard and Dean Brown, Burt was back last week to defend his RSL charity win from 2022 finishing a respectable third, and returned to claim top spot this week, Jeremy Ezard finishing second was consistent as usual with some master class tuition helping during the week, Dean Brown also hitting form with some big events not too far away.

The nearest the pin prize went to Terry Lowis on the 13th - this was the only green hit for the day.

Euroa young gun shines to the top

No play for two GVL teams this season THE Goulburn Valley Football Netball league has informed clubs and supports that Benalla Football Netball Club has withdrawn its under 15 netball team, and Tatura Football Netball Club has also withdrawn its under 18 football side.

The GVL advises there will be no fixture change to accommodate the absence of these teams and any team due to play either side will now have a bye and these games treated as forfeits by Benalla and Tatura.

League operations manager Jo Spencer released a statement: “AFL GM, the GVL and Netball Victoria will work with both clubs over the season with the hope that both teams will be part of the competition in season 2024,” it read.

EUROA’S own Nic Hill has reaped the rewards of his magnificent season with the bat and wicket-keeping gloves for Euroa’s A grade cricket side.

Off the back of his breakout season, at Euroa’s presentation evening Hill was crowned the 2022/23 club champion winning the Maygar’s A grade best and fairest.

In addition to this, at the Cricket Shepparton awards night, Hill was ranked as the third best cricketer under 23 years of age in the region.

In a area that has more than 1000 cricketers under 23 years old, to be ranked third is a remarkable effort and an accomplishment Euroa Cricket Club is extremely proud of.

The highlight for 19 year old Hill’s season was an innings of 49 runs against Kyabram when he faced 95 balls and batted for 110 minutes.

SENIORS DO WELL: Last weekend saw the Eura CFA members do well again in their state finals competition. Teagan Kubeil was one member of the female team which took out top honors. on day one the Under 14s looked in great stead for the Under 14s Aggregate sitting 1st and Euroa sitting second in the overall aggregate for the whole competition.

Day two saw the weather take a turn with temperatures dropping and a few rain drops and dark clouds over head, this didn’t stop them though.

~ State Grand Aggregate 3rd SENIORS’ COMPETITION: The Euroa senior running team made up of seven runners this past weekend headed to the 2023 senior state championships also in Mooroopna.

The championships are a chance for the senior members of CFA brigades to come together to improve on skills

that reflect real life firefighting aspects.

The seniors participated in a range of different dry, wet, female, tanker, pumper, ladder and reel events throughout the weekend.

Saturday night the Euroa brigade also marched in the torch light parade and achieved an amazing 86 per cent.

“From first timers to the ones out of retirement and everyone in between all runners and marchers gave 100 per cent and should be incredibly proud of their efforts,” coach Teagan Kubeil said.

A special congratulations to the female runners Lara Mawson, Amelia Delahey and Teagan Kubeil who took out the female aggregate for the second year in a row placing first in the one man and two man Marshall events for a combined total of 16 points.

With a successful two weeks the runners will now wind down for the off season before season 2023-2024 begins.

Euroa hosts Wangaratta in good spirited practice matches THE Euroa Magpies hosted the ultra competitive Wangaratta Rovers Football Netball Club on Saturday.

The day promised to be a good spirted but tough hit out for both clubs ahead of their respective 2023 campaigns.

All matches fulfilled these expectations, with neither footballers or netballers from either sides taking a backward step when a contest presented itself.

In the football the Wan-

garatta Rovers had a slight edge over Euroa, but all who took to the field benefited from the contests with much improvement to come ahead of round one April 8.

However, on the netball courts Euroa proved to be too strong for the Rovers, with their new dresses and new recruits on full display for the Euroa locals.

A big thank you to Wangaratta for making the trip to Euroa and all the best for season 2023.

SOME 74 veteran golfers contested at Euroa Golf Club on Monday, March 20.

The temperature ranged from 17 to 23 degrees Celsius throughout the day with a fairly steady and challenging 33kph breeze.

The course has recovered well from the floods and the recent dry weather enabled play to proceed from a number of creek hazards.

As always the hospitality was exceptional with the ladies preparing the sumptuous luncheon which included peaches and ice cream.

A grade had a 3-way tie on the leader board at 35 stableford points with Ron Wilkinson (Shepparton), successful on countback from Jack Dell (Numurkah), and Stephen Pickett (Cobram), the unlucky one.

B grade also involved a countback with new member from Rushworth, Garrick Campbell edging out Geoff Stone (Numurkah) on 38 points.

C grade produced the top score with Tom Martin achieving 42pts well ahead of Gerald Pennefather, (Shepparton), on 35pts.

Nearest the pin was contested on the 128 metre 18th hole which is protected on the right by a large red gum to send any wayward shots into a deep gully, John Boruch, (Seymour), led A grade; David Fullager (Avenel), B grade; and Bruce Whebell (Mooroopna), with his first tee shot of the day, best in C grade.

Racing events a major boost for regional Vic advertising - helping to attract more people to the race tracks who may have never been before.

The events are expected to attract more than 70,000 people, with 31 of the 33 events held in regional Victoria between March and May. Clubs from all over Victoria will benefit from the program - from Mildura in the north-west

Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines said country race clubs put on exciting days that bring towns together, encourage more people to the region and support local businesses.

“A day at the country races is a great experience and we’re making sure clubs can put on a fantastic show for the whole family this summer,” he said.

Euroa U14 CFA juniors top the state championships EUROA’S CFA Junior Firefighter competition teams have ranked third in the overall state championship titles.

The weekend of March 18 and 19 saw 14 of the Euroa junior CFA runners head across to Mooroopna for the CFA/VFBV Urban Junior Firefighter State Championships.

Heading across early Saturday morning the juniors were ready and eager to get the day’s event’s started.

The runners as well as coach Teagan Kubeil could not be happier with the results that were achieved by all throughout the two

days of competition.

“All runners are to be commended for their efforts across the weekend, from on the track to sitting track side the runners showed great displays of teamwork and comradery putting their skills and knowledge to the test,” Kubeil said.

Kubeil also gave a special mention to bus driver Tyson Thomson thanking him for getting the kids to and from each demo and championships safely and said without him it would not have been possible.

CFA deputy chief officer Jean Dyzel said the championships are an important

tradition for our members.

“It’s fantastic to be here in Mooroopna once again for the urban junior championships,” Ms Dyzel said.

“I’d particularly like to acknowledge the impact of the 2022 Victorian floods on the local community and thank them for once again welcoming us to Shepparton and Mooroopna.

“The state championships are not only important to our juniors, they are a highlight of the CFA annual calendar.

“They simulate many practical firefighting activities, while also promoting the essential values of teamwork, health and wellbeing.”
