Euroa sustainability awards triple treat EUROA dominated the 2022 Premier’s Sustainability Awards in Melbourne last week, taking home three of the 14 awards on offer.

It was an exceptional reward for the work that environmental volunteers do in the region.

The winners are now in the draw for the prestigious Banksia Awards held next year.

There were many great community and business contenders represented and the competition was fierce.

recognised as the Community Champion in the Future Energy category.

This award was for the solar and battery renewable energy installations on business premises and for the solar pergola which provides power to renters in Binney Street.

Faced with a notoriously unstable

power supply, Euroa Environment Group partnered with Mondo Energy and the Victorian Government to trial a small business microgrid to build resilience into the local power supply.

Six businesses had solar panels installed and five now have a battery, with businesses now reporting a reduction in power costs.

The ‘Solar Pergola’ which Glenn Burnside constructed at the back of Mawson’s Bakery was built after the Euroa Environment Group redirected grant money from

consultation to infrastructure.

Shirley Saywell, Euroa Environment Group chair, said “champions” were instrumental in making the project happen.

“Glenn Burnside’s generosity and design flair gave us the Solar Pergola - a clever solution to the problem of limited roof space,” Ms Saywell said.

The second award went to the Euroa Arboretum, its nomination receiving warm applause from the 400 or so people in the audience.

Summit to address problem Stakeholders meetingg to map p road to more affordable regional g housing g THE availability of more affordable housing across regional Victoria will be discussed when the State Government holds a summit in October, seven weeks out from the 2022 state election.

A Regional Affordable Housing Summit will be held in Creswick on Tuesday, October 4 to provide a forum for discussion, strengthening relationships and identifying challenges and opportunities to meet the needs of regional Victoria’s burgeoning population.

Delivering more affordable housing will be a key topic and the Labor Government will further outline its Affordable Housing Rental Scheme and plans to create more housing in regional Victoria.

The summit will also focus on unlocking more housing for workers and enabling local businesses to expand by hearing from civic leaders and partners working in regional Victoria about the challenges of affordable housing supply and economic growth.

As part of the $5.3 billion Big Housing Build, the Affordable Housing Rental Scheme will deliver an initial 2400 affordable rental homes to address affordability pressures in metropolitan Melbourne and regional city centres, and supply issues in regional Victoria.

“The availability of housing in regional Victoria is not a problem that has appeared overnight but it is one Labor is only taking an interest in when it is politically convenient on the eve of an election,” Ms Ryan said.

“The Nationals will always be the party of regional Victorians.

“We will govern with meaningful action not summits and glossy brochures.”

“The Nationals have had solutions on the table to improve housing affordability for years,” Ms Cleeland said.

“We need infrastructure to support locals and housing is a crucial component.

“If elected to government we will introduce a flying squad of planners to help bring 50,000 new house lots to market across regional Victoria.

“The Nationals’ Regional Infrastructure Funding Guarantee will also make sure we get our fair share to deliver the infrastructure and services we need.”

“Without housing, people and families won’t move to towns to fill jobs, businesses can’t operate at full capacity and councils miss out

on rate revenue to maintain local infrastructure and services.

“We want people who live in regional Victoria or want to work here to have fair, just and equal opportunity to do this.

“For too long regional Victorians have been taken for granted.”

Helen Haines welcomed the summit as housing affordability and availability is a major issue across the North East.

“Governments tend to focus on the affordability side of the problem, but not enough is being done to address the issue affecting almost every regional town in Australia - that there just aren’t enough houses,” Dr Haines said.

“It is vital that this forum addresses issues with housing supply, including supporting councils to open up more land for housing.

“The housing crisis must be addressed to keep families safe, to allow people to stay in the towns they love and for businesses to be able to find and keep the workers they desperately need.”

Dr Haines said she is meeting with Federal Minister for Housing Julie Collins in the coming weeks to ensure she is across all of these issues and the needs of regional Australia are heard by the government.

Minister for Housing, Danny Pearson, and Minister for Regional Development, Harriet Shing, will join representatives from local government, the community housing sector, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, members of Regional Partnerships and Regional Development Australia Committees and other peak bodies at the summit.

The award recognises the innovative education undertaken through the bush kinder as well as the work done by those who undertake the rehabilitation work.

The Arboretum was little more than a degraded paddock when a team of volunteers took on the challenge of restoring it to its pre-colonial state as a grassy woodland.

Now, the thriving green space is home to 60 different grasses, daisies, lilies and peas, as well as insects, birds, reptiles and gliders.

Taungurung Traditional Owners also play an important role in this project.

After receiving the award for specific projects and programs, the Arboretum was also recognised in a separate award as the Premier’s chosen Regional Achievement champion.

All of the Euroa contingent who tracked down to Melbourne were thrilled with the recognition of people’s work.

Janet Fogarty, one

of the earliest on board with work at the Arboretum, when the task seemed ‘impossible’, sees ‘champions for the environment everywhere’.

Frank Pierce sees the Arb and the Seven Creeks community projects as linked in their ambition and simply said ‘this stuff gets done on good will’ and there is a ‘heap’ of it in our community.

Charlie Brydon, at his first awards ceremony, commented that it was inspiring to come away with new mates in sustainable practice.

In particular he was enthused by the work that the Award winning NorthWestern Alliance has done along the railway track at Moreland.

That Alliance has transformed a divisive rail corridor in Melbourne’s inner north into a vibrant and active urban precinct, promoting community health, inclusion, resilience, and a sustainable connection to nature.

Looking across the railway line at the Shepparton entrance to our town Charlie makes the point ‘we could do that here’.

Violet Town traffic rises from post collision diversions TRAFFIC from the Hume Freeway collision continued to be diverted into Violet Town’s back roads for more than 24 hours last week, leading to a significant build-up of local traffic and vehicles being stuck in poor weather conditions.

On Tuesday night at about 7:30pm, the southbound Hume Freeway was still being diverted through Violet Town.

Local traffic within Violet Town was heavily impacted by the increase of diverted vehicles, resulting in standstills through the normally quiet area.

Vehicles that were diverted from the Hume Freeway into Violet Town were permitted to turn south into High Street (Old Hume Highway) and head south into McDiarmids Road but were unable to turn back onto the Hume Freeway at Quarry Road due to a police block.

Traffic instead had to continue to Mahers Road and into the ‘back blocks of Balmattum’ along Old Euroa Road.

Mahers Road and Old Euroa Road are infrequently maintained single-lane dirt roads that often struggle to be suitable for local traffic, let alone the vol-

Both of these roads were recently impacted by heavy rainfall in the area, leading to flooded roads without signage to inform the newly diverted traffic.

One Violet Town resident, Andrew Walter, said he was concerned by what he deemed as inaccuracies from

the organisations in charge.

“What apologies will the authoritative power offer to impacted traffic who had to navigate without any signage or assistance and to local members of the Violet Town district who had incredible disruption,” he said.

“My hunch is they have no local knowledge or capacity.

“In the past, our local po-

liceman, Pat Storer, would assist and direct with good local knowledge and the Strathbogie Shire would put up detour signs on the Murchison-Violet Town Road.

“Pat is away and there was no sign of any Strathbogie Shire or Rural Roads Victoria signs.”

Regional Roads Victoria have been contacted for comment on the road diversion.

According to Mr Hearn, significant investment would be made into Triple-Zero services across Victoria.

“I am committed to restoring community confidence in Triple-Zero with a $125 million investment into this critically important service that all Victorians rely on,” he said.

This commitment is expected to provide an additional $125 million on top of the $333 million allocated in the 2022-23 budget to fix Triple-Zero, including by;  Upgrading all IT systems including a new Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and a fully functional new back-up system with sufficient capacity for surge demand.  Facilitating multiple service training for 50 per cent of all call taking and dispatch staff.  Refocusing staff recruitment on frontline call taking and dispatch roles, not corporate positions.  Delivering sustainable ongoing funding, which TripleZero has been requesting since 2015.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

HEALTH PLAN OUTLINED: Liberal candidate for Euroa Brad Hearn has explained the Liberal Party commitments for regional health care.

Mr Hearn said this comprehensive plan would fix TripleZero once and for all.

“We need to deliver these real solutions to deliver an effective, sustainable and reliable emergency health system that is there for Victorians in need,” he said.

“Our direct action will get Triple-Zero working again and restore community confidence that help will be there in an emergency.”

The Liberal plan would also create a Cancer Centre and Clinical Health School at Goulburn Valley Health in Shepparton with a $100 million investment.

With this development, Mr Hearn said that Goulburn Valley residents will no longer be forced to travel to Melbourne to receive vital cancer treatments.

By reprioritising funds available from shelving Labor’s $35 billion Cheltenham to Box Hill rail line, the Liberals say they will instead get to work on these facilities which will support thousands of locals and healthcare workers.

The new Integrated Cancer Centre will allow GV Health to expand the current cancer services it offers, including new models of specialised care for people in the region fighting cancer.

The brand new Clinical Health School to train healthcare workers, the first of its kind in the region, is proposed to tackle staffing issues within the health care sector.

Under a proposed partnership with La Trobe University, the school will support more

than 300 nursing and allied health enrolments each year.

The school will allow GV Health and its partners to offer dedicated nursing, midwifery and allied health training facilities, with programs designed to attract students to regional Victoria.

“When we improve our regional health services we improve our connections to community,” Mr Hearn said.

“It is vital that this can be done locally as the burden of travel not only increases costs but takes precious time.

“This commitment is a win for us locally across the seat of Euroa as it will support some of our rural communities in reducing travel time from commutes to Albury or Melbourne for treatment.”

Local creatives to learn and network with new program STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is partnering with Regional Arts Victoria (RAV) to bring the ‘RAV in Residence’ program to Euroa this October.

RAV in Residence is a partnership between Regional Arts Victoria and member organisations or local councils.

The program provides the opportunity for local creatives to book one-onone conversations with RAV staff and delivers creative networking opportunities in communities.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said council was excited to partner with RAV to bring the program to the area.

“We know our shire has an abundance of creative

people with a variety of skills across many different mediums,” she said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for them to hone their skills and to develop and grow their networks with other creative people.”

Regional Arts Victoria membership engagement coordinator Rhiannon Poley said being able to connect with local creatives and have meaningful private discussions was so valuable to both RAV and the artist.

“We share our knowledge, advise on opportunities, and ensure regional artists are getting the right support they need,” she said.

More paramedics announced

By GUS RIDDER THE State Labor Government is aiming to improve the quality of care for regional Victorians and deliver more resources for Ambulance Victoria by providing two paramedics on each shift for eight more ambulance branches.

Minister for Ambulance Services Mary-Anne Thomas announced four more rural ambulance branches have this week moved from single to dual paramedic crewing in Murchison, Paynesville,

Rupanyup and Yarram.

A further four branches in Beaufort, Charlton, Euroa and Foster will move from single to dual paramedic crewing in October.

“We’re ensuring residents across Victoria get the right emergency care when they need it, by providing the extra resources paramedics deserve,” Ms Thomas said.

“These local communities will now have the peace of mind that two paramedics will be on each shift to respond to critical emergencies.

“We’re making record investments in our paramedics, so they have the facilities and resources they need to continue to do what they best - save lives.”

Euroa has seen an improvement of its emergency resources recently.

Over the last two years, 10 new public automated external defibrillator (AEDs) have been registered in Euroa.

Six of them are available 24/7 and are located at the Nest Cafe, Euroa Pharmacy, the police station, VICSES Euroa Unit, the BP Euroa

service station and croquet club.

All six have been registered on the Ambulance Victoria AED register which means that if someone suffers a cardiac arrest and a bystander calls 000, the calltaker can direct people to the nearest defibrillator.

With two paramedics rostered on 24 hours a day to respond to emergency calls, more residents will have better access to paramedics and their lifesaving skills than ever before.

Officers (ACOs) will remain a critical part of the team, providing crucial back-up to paramedics, filling vacant shifts, transporting less-urgent patients to hospital and responding to cases when paramedics are with another patient.

The volunteer ACOs also play an important role in community engagement, teaching CPR and defibrillation skills and encouraging locals to become GoodSAM responders.

GoodSAM is a smartphone app that connects

Victorians in cardiac arrest with responders who can provide hands-only CPR and defibrillation (if available) in the first critical minutes before paramedics arrive.

These upgrades are part of the State Government’s investment to deliver two paramedics on shifts in 15 locations across regional Victoria.

Since February 2020, seven ambulance branches in Terang, Camperdown, Rochester, St Arnaud, Avoca, Beechworth and Inglewood have all been upgraded to dual paramedic crewing.

PLAN B: The Australian National Show and Shine has confirmed its location changes, with Binney, Brock and Bury Street set to host displays.

FOLLOWING last week’s announcement that the Australian National Show and Shine will move most of its displays from the Seven Creeks Park to the streets of Euroa’s CBD, details of “Plan B” have been announced.

Euroa Show and Shine president Ross Holt said that the details are still very much a “work in progress” and that further fine tuning of display locations is likely to take place right up to the event on Sunday, October 2.

With the exception of Area 5, near the bowling club, most Park Areas will be closed to the public.

Their locations have been transferred to some Euroa streets.

Euroa Streets now allocated to displays will be Binney Street and parts of Brock Street and Bury Street.

Motor Cycles, the Lions Market and Police display will remain in Kirkland Ave, together with 1920s cars and several stalls that would normally be in the parks areas which have been closed.

There will be a total of eleven (11) entrance gates located around the perimeter of the display areas, all manned by groups of volunteers from local clubs and other groups.

LONGWOOD LOOKOUT By the LONGWOOD ACTION GROUP We hope everyone has enjoyed their long weekend.

It’s been wonderful seeing some sunshine for a change which has really made the gardens start to spring back into life.

It was great to see so many campers taking advantage of the beautiful community centre surrounds over the past weekend.

Campers can make donations at four locations around the town, the camping toilet block, shop, Pub and The Rockery.

The Action group collect the funds which are donated back to the community centre committee for ongoing maintenance.

The little bridge over the culvert at the new streetscaping has been com-

pleted and ready for use.

The Shire is aware of the drainage issues within the streetscaping, and once things have dried out a bit more, will hopefully address and correct the problem.

The Longwood Action Group will once again be holding its annual Community Picnic Day. So, save the date for Sunday, October 30 from 11.30am-3pm.

It will be held at the Pub Paddock BBQ area and more details to follow soon.

Enrolments are now being taken at Longwood Primary School for 2023.

FUNDS are available to landowners who seeking to protect waterways and wetlands on their properties in the Goulburn Broken catchment.

The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GB CMA) has funds available under its Riparian On-Ground Work Program to help landholders revegetate and provide fencing for stock management.

GB CMA’s Christine Glassford said landholders could also access advice about weed-control, erosion and public access on Crown land.

“While subsidy rates will vary depending on site conditions, all waterways and wetlands within our catchment are valued and eligible for funding support,” she said.

“There is funding for stream protection and enhancement works which support threatened native fish populations, such as Macquarie perch and Trout cod.”

Expressions of interest are also sought from individuals and groups in urban environments

who wish to improve the condition of waterways in their towns.

The Urban Waterway Works program provides funding opportunities for landholders and community groups to collaborate with the GB CMA on works such as exotic tree control.

The projects can be complimented by in-kind works such as community planting of supplied indigenous plants.

Ms Glassford urged interested people to contact the GB CMA as soon as possible as the deadline was fast approaching.

“Writing submissions can be daunting but this one is very simple and comprises five basic questions,” she said.

“So jump onto the website and throw your hat into the ring.”

WE note the ARTC’s advertisement (August 31), which reads in part: “The assessment of the options, (for a replacement Anderson Street crossing) as well as the approvals process is complex including undertaking technical studies to ensure the project works meet Victorian standards.

“We anticipate these additional technical studies will take a few months to complete .... “ This contradicts an assurance from ARTC GM Ed Walker last December, when he advised: “.....there are two options.

“We’ve gone to the Minister (for Planning) with two options.

“He is currently assessing these two options.”

In fact, ARTC did not submit to the Victorian Government until May and then it was for assessment by the Department of Transport.

There can only be two possible causes for this change of advice:  The ARTC is so inept that it did not plan for this complex approvals process; or,

 We were fed misinformation in order to placate us?

The ARTC must be called to account for its mismanagement of consultation and planning in Euroa.

The community’s choice of an underpass is decisive and has been well articulated.

In contrast, the ARTC procrastinates, or deliberately stalls its decision in the hope that we will tire and give up the fight.

Are we to be treated with further disrespect and forced to endure more humbug?

Or has the ARTC never moved from its original plan for a higher, more intrusive overpass, but struggles to find a way to avoid the wrath of this community?

Stand up for what you believe I believe that everyone should stand up for what they believe.

It has taken me a long time to be able to do that.

I thank Charlie Brydon and

Ron Horrigan of Euroa for responding to my letter to the editor recently about Australia Day remaining the same day in our shire. Their criticisms and history lessons are part of what they believe in.

There used to be around 9000 ratepayers in our shire, probably more now.

Also there are many people like John and myself who live in retirement villages, aged care homes, and rental properties.

They do not get a vote for local councillors.

I believe the council should represent all of these residents and that all should be sent a paper survey to see how many would like to change Australia Day January 26 to another one.

No matter what the cost.

They all have a right to a say or at least direct consultation.

Not just through an online survey as many folk do not have or have access to a computer.

Then the result should be sent to the Federal Government, who makes these national days law, so they can add our shire’s input to their database on the issue for future reference and consideration.

Local councils do not have

the right to change these national decreed days.

They were not elected to take on these issues.

They should do their local core responsibilities to cater for all their people within the shire i.e. shire road and footpath maintenance, street lighting, public toilets, parks and gardens, waterways upkeep, public buildings under their jurisdiction, swimming pools, rubbish and waste collections and that type of thing that are important to locals.

Over the past 20 years many changes have occurred, not always popular with many, which no longer reflect what were once our core social values, principles and morals and in many cases our Christian faith.

I am worried that Easter and Christmas holidays may go next as so many do not believe in these religious holy times but take the holidays off anyway.

So I firmly believe that if everyday people do not stand up for what they believe in they cannot get angry if bad things happen that they don’t want.

Euroa Red Cross hold bridge day THE members of Euroa Red Cross are mindful of the role Red Cross has during these difficult times, both within Australia and overseas.

As a response to these constant calls for assistance, the local branch held a very successful and enjoyable Bridge Day last week.

Event organiser Bev Asquith said the event showed the support for Red Cross is strong.

She thanked the local businesses, Burtons IGA, Burkes Bakery and Euroa

Pharmacy for the donation of raffle prizes.

The Bridge players generously supported the raffle and the winners were thrilled with their prizes.

Bridge players came from Benalla, Nagambie and Seymour as well as members of Euroa Bridge Club, to enjoy a happy day in the Third Age Clubrooms.

Mrs Asquith thanked the Committee of the Third Age Club for generously allowing the event to take place in their lovely club rooms, and the members of Euroa

Bridge Club, Linda Bennett and Sally Perry for their help in setting up tables and cards for play.

Linda also generously provided the lucky door prize.

The day began when president of Euroa Red Cross, Christine John welcomed players and asked for a minute’s silence to honour the Queen on the day of her funeral.

The players enjoyed a lovely morning tea prepared by the Red Cross members who are renowned for their catering skills.

Lunch was a feature of the day as players enjoyed the view of the swollen creek during the break in play.

Mrs Asquith was thrilled by the success of the day and thanked members of Euroa Red Cross for their support and the wonderful food they provided.

It is hoped that this Bridge Day may become an annual event.

The next fundraiser for Euroa Red Cross is the BBQ at the October Farmers’ Market.

Farmer Will to open the Euroa Show

RATs funding for schools to continue STUDENTS at schools and early childhood services can continue to access Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) as needed as the program will continue in term four.

The State Government has distributed more than 100 million free RATs to schools this year, to reduce costs for parents and help keep kids in the classroom.

Minister for Education, Natalie Hutchins, this week said the ongoing program to distribute RATs in schools had collectively saved Victorian families hundreds of millions of dollars throughout the school year.

In addition, as part of the government’s $190 million plan to keep classrooms safe, more than 105,000 air purifiers have been distributed to all 1587 government schools and almost 25,000 to 620 non-government schools since term four last year, helping to reduce instances of classroom transmission.

Primary and secondary school students and staff, and early childhood education and care staff and children aged three to four are recommended to test at home if they experience COVID-19 symptoms or are a contact of a confirmed case.

Acrording to most health experts, vaccination of children aged five to 11 and booster shots for people over 16 years old remain the best way to protect students and staff against the risks of COVID-19.

AG SOCIETIES TO BENEFIT: More funding will be made available for agricultural societies and shows across Victoria with new grants now taking applications.

More grants for Victorian agricultural shows APPLICATIONS are now open for a series of grants that support agricultural shows and field days across the state.

The grants are available under the Agricultural and Pastoral Society Grants 2022-23 round and are for shows that promote the best of Victoria’s agricultural offerings and benefit the state’s regional and rural communities.

As with previous years, eligible applicants can apply for up to $10,000 for infrastructure development and business activities to celebrate Victoria’s agricultural communities, practices, industry and produce.

Grants may be used to upgrade or build new facilities including judging areas, staging or display areas, or for public amenities for multi-purpose community use.

The money may also be used for business activities that assist in the planning of events.

Agriculture Victoria executive director of agriculture policy and programs Sarah-Jane McCormack said the new round of funding ensures that agricultural shows can continue to deliver exciting events for local communities.

“The Victorian Government continues to support Agricultural and

Pastoral Societies to get back up and running this year,” she said.

“In addition to the one-off support for free entry of children at shows, these grants are also available to make sure that showgrounds, facilities and events are in top shape making events enjoyable and safe for communities.”

The projects will help the societies deliver exciting events that build confidence in the agriculture sector and support regional economies and jobs.

The grants are open to all eligible Victorian Agricultural and Pastoral Societies including the Euroa

Agricultural Society and many more groups in the north-east.

Regional and rural shows are a fixture of Victorian society, building community spirit by celebrating agriculture in a fun, entertaining, educational and inclusive environment.

Applications are now open and close at midnight on October 21, 2022.

La Nina declared - above average rainfall expected THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has declared a La Nina event is underway in the Pacific Ocean, with communities in eastern Australia encouraged to prepare for above-average rainfall over spring and early summer.

Bureau of Meteorology head of long-range forecasts Dr Andrew Watkins said the bureau’s three-month climate outlook shows a high chance of above average rainfall for most of the eastern half of the Australian mainland and eastern Tasmania.

“During La Nina events, waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean are cooler than normal, and waters in the western tropical Pacific

Ocean warmer than normal,” Dr Watkins said.

“This causes changes in wind, cloud and pressure patterns over the Pacific.

“When this change in the atmosphere combines with changes in ocean temperature, it can influence global weather patterns and climate, including increasing rainfall over large parts of Australia.”

Dr Watkins said while La Nina criteria have been met, most models forecast this event to be weak to moder-

“La Nina is not the only driver influencing this wet outlook,” he said.

“To our west, a significant negative Indian Ocean Dipole

(IOD) event is underway.

“We expect the IOD influence will reduce in late spring or early summer.

“The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is also in a positive phase, and likely to remain positive into summer.

“Positive SAM during summer pushes weather systems south, which increases the chance of rain in New South Wales, eastern Victoria and southern parts of Queensland.”

Dr Watkins said all these climate influences push Australia’s climate towards a wetter phase, and together have shaped an outlook for the coming months that shows more than 80 per cent chance of above average rainfall for many parts of the eastern half of Australia.

With catchments already wet, the flood risk remains, particularly for eastern Australia.

The Climate Council’s director of research Dr Simon Bradshaw agreed that more Australians would be at risk of flooding.

“A third consecutive La Nina is likely to bring above average rainfall on an already saturated east coast, spelling tough times ahead for many Australians,” he said.

“The risk of extreme rainfall and flooding is also exacerbated by climate change, driven by the burning of coal, oil and gas.”

The bureau is encouraging communities to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings on the bureau’s website and BOM weather app.

Council cracks down on pet owners STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is encouraging pet owners and those managing livestock to do the right thing.

Council rangers will be increasing proactive patrols across the shire to educate the community about responsible pet ownership.

“This means we’ll be watching for people walking their dogs off leash in public spaces and looking to ensure yards are secure to stop pets from wandering,” Mayor Laura Binks said.

“With pet ownership comes responsibility - you can ensure your pet and others are kept safe by following the requirements of the Domestic Animals Act around pet management.

“The best thing you can do is keep your dog on a leash when you’re out and about.

“Leashing dogs in public spaces, ensures you’re always in control of your dog.”

The Domestic Animals Act requires all dogs in public spaces to be on a lead.

The only exemption is the

Euroa Off-Leash Dog Park.

Cr Binks said, when everyone leashes, it:  reduces unwanted and stressful dog interactions;  limits aggression and minimises bites;  keeps your dog safe and under control, and  helps to protect our wildlife.

Council said they heard loud and clear that the community wanted them to do more to stop people doing the wrong thing.

“If you’re caught walking your dog off leash you will be fined,” Cr Binks said.

“If your dog is found wandering and your yard is not secure, you will also be fined.

“We are listening and we are taking action.

“Pets are such an important part of our lives and we want to keep Strathbogie Shire safe for all pets, pet owners, residents and visitors to enjoy.

“There are more than 2000 registered dogs and around 500 registered cats living in Strathbogie Shire.”

Cr Binks reminded residents that there was

also a limit in place of the number of animals that can be housed at a property in the Shire’s residential zones.

“Those living in a residential zone are permitted to house two cats, two dogs and five poultry and it’s important to remember that roosters of any kind are not permitted at a residential property,” Cr Binks said.

The responsible housing of animals also extends to livestock management where fences on properties must be secure to ensure livestock cannot escape onto roads, causing traffic hazards.

If residents fail to comply with their legal responsibilities around responsible pet ownership and livestock management, significant penalties apply.

Dog owners can be fined $278 per dog that is wandering or off-leash between sunrise and sunset and $370 per dog between sunset and sunrise.

NR Ralston Pavilion to display local works THE NR Ralston Pavilion stands like a sentinel at the Euroa Showgrounds.

The pavilion is named in honour of Norman Robert Ralston, a man who dedicated many years of service to the former Euroa Agricultural and Pastoral Society, as have a number of his descendants over more recent times.

Its contents are one of the biggest drawcards to the Euroa Show, showcasing the huge and varied talent of the local community.

In 2022 it will be ‘all systems go’ with sections made to include arts and crafts, wood and metal work, needlework and knitting/crocheting, photography, pot plants, cut flowers and floral art, home grown produce and cookery including jams and preserve.

All members of the community, from primary aged children to those with disabilities, are encouraged to view the exhibitions from our many local community groups.

There will be a number of Victorian Agricultural Society (VAS) classes to which anyone can enter, providing some lessons for those wanting to go on and compete at regional and state level.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: The Filipino Australian & Friends Association celebrated 40 years since the group was formed with a huge party in Shepparton.

Filipino community celebrates milestone with big party

By GUS RIDDER SEVERAL local residents made their way to Shepparton for the 40th anniversary of the Filipino Australian & Friends Association (FAFA).

The FAFA Club was founded in 1982 by Edith Dizon Fitzsimmons and four decades later, they are still celebrating.

Held at the GV Hotel in Shepparton, the venue was decorated especially for the event with dining tables labelled for every

individual who attended.

Entertainment on the night was sensational, with live music and traditional dancing enjoyed by all.

There was even a guest appearance by a former Miss World icon Jossa Dalit, along with a fashion parade and several prizes and raffles.

Emcee of the evening Marieta Martin was thrilled with the outcome.

“Based from the feedback received, every part of the pro-

gram from the grand opening to closing went well,” she said.

“Everyone had a ball and had so much fun parading and dancing like professional models.”

One highlight of the evening was the gentlemen’s fashion parade.

“Everyone and I couldn’t stop laughing because they’ve entertained us with their unique walk and dance,” Ms Martin said.

Current FAFA president Delma Broughton discussed some of the history behind the Filipi-

no community in the region and the construction of the Philippine House in Shepparton.

“Mrs Edith Dizon Pitzsimmons was behind the idea and inspiration of the Philippine House who saw to it as a dream come true after many requests to the Shepparton City Council and firm cooperation with Shepparton Rotary Club,” she said.

The Philippine House continues to act as a cultural hub for the community, with a museum and library for all to enjoy.

Celebrating the Euroa Show AS part of the lead up to the newspaper’s 125th anniversary, The Euroa Gazette will continue to feature historical articles, photos, advertisements and more.

This week looks at the history of the Euroa Agricultural Show.

Starting over 130 years ago, the Euroa Show continues to be a highlight for the local area.

With the show coming up on October 22, why not look back at some of the historic days it’s had over the years.

In an edition from November 9, 1948 there were over 4000 people attending the Euroa Show.

This set a record at the time and was able to happen despite ‘threatening weather’.

In the November 3, 1965 edition

the Euroa Gazette covered the 75th anniversary of the show.

That year the show took in a record £563 in gate-takings.

The October 27, 1981 edition references ‘The Grand Parade’, a former highlight of the event remembered fondly by some long-time residents.

The October 30, 1990 edition celebrated the centenary of the Show,

describing the ‘ideal weather’ for ‘one of its best ever shows’.

This year’s show looks set to be even better, with cattle judging, shearing, entertainment, music, horses and much more.

The special lift out supplement chronicling the region’s history through the pages of the newspaper will be released on October 19, 2022.

AND AFTER: The Hazell family has raised almost $1700 so far thanks to the generous support of the community.

The kindest cut of all FIVE year old Maddi Hazell and her family have raised almost $1700 for children with cancer since Maddi made the brave decision to cut her hair for charity.

Maddi cut 27cm off her hair and donated it to be made into a wig for kids with cancer.

Her hair will be sent to a wig maker in New South Wales who will make a free wig for a child suffering with cancer.

The Hazell family has also set up a fundraising page and raised $1694 (and counting) in nine days with 100 per cent of the money rgoing to families who have a child battling cancer.

Maddi is the daughter of

former Euroa resident Maren Hazell (nee Mackrell) and the granddaughter of Diane and Dennis Mackrell who are longtime locals.

The decision to donate the hair was an easy one according to Maddi’s mother.

“Firstly, Maddi just really wanted to chop her hair off,” Ms Hazell said.

“I thought if we were going to cut it, then why not do some good rather than putting it all in the bin.”

Ms Hazell said discussing the idea with Maddi was a good opportunity for the children to learn about some big issues.

“It was a really valuable chat

with Maddi and our other children, being able to broaden their horizons,” she said.

“We chatted with Maddi about helping kids with cancer and that made her really excited to donate it.”

Once the decision was made, the fundraising process was quickly underway.

“The website created a fundraising page and then we used social media and word of mouth to let people know,” Ms Hazell said.

“Maddi would go around to people saying ‘I’m cutting my hair off and not putting it in the bin’, and demand money from people.

“We really thought the cause

was worth raising money for.”

The support from the community has been fantastic according to the Hazell family.

“We thought people might donate a little bit here and there but it’s been amazing,” Ms Hazell said.

“People have been so generous.

“We love the new hair too, no more knots are making life easy and Maddi loves it too.

“We’re so incredibly proud of Maddi, and also overwhelmed by the support of our family and friends.”

Right royal farewell for the Queen

By DIANE GRANT THE British nation achieved a right royal farewell fit for a Queen.

I knew they would do it as only they could do it.

We may never see the likes of such a momentous two weeks of honour again to a monarch.

It was one of the major events of the 21st century.

It took 20 years in the planning with a major input by Queen Elizabeth II herself.

It was a logistical masterpiece that went off like clockwork to organise the cavalcade of brightly uniformed Queen’s Household Cavalry in the processions, as well as the thousands of her armed forces troops in full uniform; the military bands, church services, combined with the Commonwealth armed forces that showed their allegiance to a monarch who was their leader.

Then there were 1000s of police, national security, communications and transport issues, the upkeep of millions of floral tributes, ensuring the parks and gardens and royal venues were spotless, household services extra work, the flag hangings in the Mall, the steel barriers and rubbish services.

All this that was planned was unparalleled in reality.

The Queen was personally involved with the planning towards all of this pomp, ceremony and pageantry that her country has been able to conduct for over hundreds of years.

This also included the royal family observances, the tolling of bells and the firing of gun salutes by the Royal Artillery.

The culmination of all this planning was seen by millions of people around the world when an incredibly moving state funeral was held on Monday, September 19 at Westminster Abbey in London and St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Then to make it even more significant, there was the proclamation and allegiance to her son as the new monarch, King Charles III, almost as soon as Her Majesty had passed away.

We saw from the time of her death, the love, respect and dignity Her Majesty gave in her lifetime was given back by hundreds of thousands of loyal subjects who wanted to return these values back to their monarch of 70 years.

Then there was the support shown to the royal family in Scotland for the service in Edinburgh and then in London by the queue to see her lying in state at Westminster Hall in London over four days.

World leaders and heads of state, royalty from other countries, veterans, and everyday people thronged to Westminster Abbey for her funeral services led by church leaders, with prayers, hymns and choral and musical tributes in the ceremony.

They all came together in unity to farewell this faithful, devoted and loyal monarch.

In my 46 years of association with the Australian defence

forces, I have never seen such precision, and an impeccable display of military excellence as I did ranging from her coffin bearers, to the military might of the young naval ratings, escorted by so many of Her Majesty’s military personnel and the musical accompaniment of the massed bands.

It was very poignant seeing them all and the royal family in the procession from Westminster Hall and after the funeral service.

I was so proud to see our Australian, New Zealand and Canadian Commonwealth armed forces march alongside Her Majesty’s forces sombrely leading the royal gun carriage with her coffin, draped with the Royal Standard, and with her symbols of state and a floral wreath on top down the long stretch of the

funeral route to Wellington Arch.

I really felt for King Charles III and his family when I saw how hard it must have been for them to stay focused on all that was going on and seeing the reverence by millions for their beloved matriarch.

The Queen would have been so proud of them all and everyone involved who carried out their duties to ensure her farewell was tasteful, dignified and that showed her love for her God, her family, her nation and the world.

Everyone played their part in this historic two weeks of mourning for this extraordinary, remarkable woman.

May she rest in peace now at Windsor Castle and her family and nation be allowed to grieve the loss of this true and faithful servant.

All were welcomed by the members present.

The October lunch will be held at the Flam Sham on Thursday, October 13 at 12pm.

Local legend on display

By RAY READ THE name of Holden will always be synonymous with Australia’s motoring history.

Throughout the years, there have been many Holdens which may rightfully challenge for the title of the most iconic name and model.

Kingswood, Commodore, Torana, Monaro will all be there.

In reality though, it’s the FJ Holden that most people would recognise as the flagbearer of the brand.

On November 29, 1948 Prime Minister Ben Chifley unveiled the first Holden 48-215, which became affectionately known as the “FX”.

The 48-215 designation indicated the year of introduction (1948) and the capacity of the engine (which was actually 2171cc).

The FJ Holden was introduced in 1953, with upgrades to engine power and a chrome face-lift.

It went on to become the iconic Australian car.

So iconic in fact, that singer and actor Peter Brian who fronted rock band “Ol 55” actually took on the stage name of FJ (Frankie J) Holden.

Euroa’s Peter Byrne regularly displays his bright yellow FJ at the Australian National Show and Shine, and has done so for many years.

When we decided to talk to him about the car, he did some fair-dinkum Aussie research and actually came up with the original compliance plate records.

This revealed that it’s a November 1954 FJ-215 Standard Sedan.

The car was the 1054th FJ built in GMH’s Woodville,

South Australia factory and was originally Calamine Blue in colour with Mountain Blue PVC upholstery.

“I believe it was found in a hay shed somewhere around Bendigo before restoration,” Mr Byrne said.

“It’s been with us for almost 21 years.”

When he purchased the car in 2001, Mr Byrne said that it was generally in good condition.

The original blue colour had been replaced with a shiny new paint job that

now sees the car sporting an eye-catching canary yellow.

All it needed was a quick application of Mother’s polish and an insurance policy with Shannons Insurance.

He then set about some further upgrades and restoration.

The original “grey” motor was replaced with a 186S engine for power, with two carburettors and extractors and also a 3.08:1 diff.

It has a set of 15inch Dragway mags and still retains the original three

speed grey gearbox with a “three-on-the-tree” gear change.

“When we first got the car, it had a pair of LC Torana seats installed,” Mr Byrne said.

“We replaced these with an original FJ bench seat that we recovered.

“We keep the FJ just for shows and Sunday drives.

“It’s a real head-turner.”

Bowls pennant practice makes for perfect performance

A season worth celebrating

BY AUDREY MCINTOSH PENNANT practice this Saturday for the weekend pennant teams, the date printed last week was an error, but all will be prepared for this week’s match against Stanhope at Euroa with a BBQ to conclude the day and then the following Saturday Euroa players will go to Shepparton Park by bus, leaving Euroa at 11.45am and joining with Avenel players for an afternoon of bowls against the Shepparton park bowlers.

Actual Saturday Pennant will start on October 15.

Last Wednesday 26 bowlers took part in the mixed triples social day and three teams won three games with the winners being declared as Richard Noble and Noel Moon.

Before the AFL grand final broadcast 26 players again came to the Euroa greens and played in the lovely sunshine, this shows that bowlers are anxious for the season to start in earnest.

Mixed triples will play today at 1pm.

MIDWEEK BOWLS Division three commence pennant competition A SUCCESSFUL practice match was held on Tuesday, September 20 and division three of the Goulburn Valley Midweek Pennant season started yesterday, with Euroa playing Avenel in their first match, results will be in next week’s notes.

On Tuesday, October 4 division three will play at Shepparton Park, and the following Tuesday, October 11 the remaining divisions will start their home and away season.

THEY may have fell agonisingly short in Sunday’s Grand Final, but the Euroa Magpies senior side can be proud of an excellent season.

The Magpies lost 10.6 (66) to Ecucha’s 11.12 (78) but it was a season of strong results and outstanding play.

Finishing third on the ladder with 14 wins and four losses, plus an impressive percentage of 175.58, there are good signs for the future of the team.

Strathbogie golf club farewells vice-captain and valued friend

By ROB BROWNLEE ON Friday the club hosted the funeral of Gary Hewlett our ViceCaptain.

Over three hundred people attended as a respect for him and the family.

Gary had his life completely organised, he and his wife Kerry’s future was assured when fate cruelly intervened, he will be sorely missed but his memory will live on, rest in peace mate.

Members hit off early on Saturday, September 24, playing stableford before watching the AFL grand final.

Not many played probably due to prior commitments, but the winner was our captain John Moore with 29 points, a lineball was won by Mick Dixey.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB THE Nagambie golf course is back in action after being closed due to ongoing rain and heavy ground conditions, but some spring sunshine and a dedicated ground staff team have the course looking great once again.

A par event was contested on Sunday gone with 24 players managing to negotiate some thick rough and demanding conditions, a runaway winner emerged David Love shooting the equal best par score for the season a +5 to win by a massive six hole margin, it was consistent ball striking and superb touch around the greens allowing Love to dominate.

Runner up was Shaun Spicer with -1 a good round considering the conditions with Lindsay Hall and Doug Neville battling it out for 3rd & 4th with -2.

The nearest the pin prizes were all awarded with some excellent strikes Michael Nolan sneaking

it onto the third, David Love capping off a good day with a ripper on the eighth, Lindsay Hall producing some magic on the 13th and Dean Brown lighting it up on the 16th.

Next week’s golf will be a stroke monthly medal with D. Love on office duty and B. Leviston in the bar.

LADIES There were four brave players for a round of Stableford.

The winner was Moz Fowler with 24pts.

The nine hole winner was Irene Keogh with 10pts.

by Moz for 18 holes and Irene for nine holes.

There were no N/P winners.

EUROA GOLF CLUB THE winter that just keeps giving hasn’t been great for the Club’s golfers.

Whilst not much rain fell on competition day, both the Sevens and Castle Creeks were running above minor flood levels when 12 brave golfers headed out for the Stableford Competition on Wednesday. Five ladies splashed it out in the third round of the Dot Rule Trophy, won by Marion McMartin from Deb Cox.

Only seven men were prepared to take on the course.

Ken Wright and Dick Farmer kept their heads above water with 31 points.

Saturday saw most of the field out early on Grand Final Day played in better conditions.

21 men were joined by several ladies in a combined competition won by Owen Robertson (8) 38 points, Dee McMartin (21) 38 points, Gaz Ritchie (12) 37 and Paddy McCarthy (6) 36.

Nearest the Pins went to Matt Mills 5th Paddy McCarthy 8th, Gaz Ritchie 12, Josh Bell 15 and Lucas Paul 18.

Better conditions produced some better scores, but the Division Two Players all struggled to show anything like great form.

Local running group to take on Nagambie festival OWNER of recently opened “The Euroa Gym” Daniel Godsmark is looking to rally interested competitors to join “The Euroa Gym Tri-Hard Crew “in a bid to take on the Nagambie Vineyards Running Festival.

Daniel is training clients to take on the 10km portion of the festival, but encourages anyone to sign up for what they feel comfortable with, with the options of a 2km childrens run, a 5km run, a marathon and a half marathon available.

The festival runs through three of the Nagambie region’s wineries, finishing in the Tabilk orchards for food, wine, live music and entertainment.

The festival takes place on Sunday, November 6, giving interested runners plenty of time to train up to take on the challenge.

Daniel is offering training for anyone new to running that may be interested, as well as the support of a group of likeminded individuals with one goal conquer the 10k and have a good time doing it.

Euroa Lawn Tennis Club season set to commence THE Euroa Lawn Tennis Club season commences on October 8, with Euroa set to enter six teams over two grades, new players welcome and encouraged.

Parkrun to celebrate 18th birthday with Parkwalk campaign FOR the last parkrun in the month of September, the Euroa Apex park saw 39 participants ready and raring to take on the course.

This is a 100-150% increase in numbers on average since May. There were 14 first timers, all of which had never participated in the Euroa parkrun, four of which were participating in their first ever parkrun.

One couple, having recently heard of the parkrun system were thrilled with the event, having such a good time that they are now planning some parkrun tourism.

Four of the 39 participants achieved personal bests, with one participant completing their 50th parkrun.

Two participants had

not long surpassed their 250th parkruns, doing their 251st in Euroa, and one local woman completing her 155th parkrun.

A very special thanks to the volunteers who give their own time to allow the 39 participants to enjoy a smooth and successful morning.

The weather was perfect for the event, not too hot, not too cold, but just comfortable for some time outside which was enjoyed by all present.

In the month of October parkrun celebrates it’s 18th year in operation, with October 2 being the birthday of parkrun in London, England.

To celebrate, parkrun is running a parkwalk campaign.

Euroa Labour Day Tennis Tournament nominated for state award

THE Euroa Labour Day Weekend Tennis Tournament is a finalist in the prestigious Victorian Tennis Awards.

The event is one of three finalists in the Tournament of the Year category, with the winner to be announced late next month.

Tournament director Bob Furphy said he was delighted to have the Euroa tournament recognised by Tennis Victoria.

“We’re up against some pretty big tournaments but I’m quietly confident our event stacks up well against the best of them,” Mr Furphy said.

This year the event catered for more than 600 players, the most in the tournament’s 92 year history.

“And we had 100

players on the waiting list. We closed entries 20 minutes after opening to the public. “ Involved with tournament organisation for more than 25 years, Mr Furphy said it had doubled in size compared with 15 years ago.

“I think there are a few reasons that people keep returning to play in our tournament and one is that it is a traditional country tennis tournament and there’s not many of those left anymore,” he said.

“It retains those country tournament values.

“We know every player by name so when they come to the tournament box we know who they are.”

Mr Furphy said these

“Our match times are perfect and unlike many knock-out events, every player is guaranteed to play three matches.

Mr Furphy said the committed band of volunteers was also key to the success of the Labour Day Tournament.

“We have a fabulous group of volunteers which rolls up its sleeves every year and works to ensure the success of the event.”

The winner will be announced at a function at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club on October 27.

Euroa basketball association kicks off representative season THE Euroa Basketball Association’s representative season kicked off over the past weekend travelling to the Echuca Junior Basketball Tournament.

With boys’ teams entered in the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18’s it was a great start to what looks like being a very positive season for the association.

The weekend started well with the U16 boys getting the win over Shepparton, reinforcing the confidence coach’s Sam Gebauer and Tom Hill had in the group leading into the weekend.

During the remaining games for the U16s, they

continued to come together as a team and finished the weekend off with another win over a strong Wangaratta team in their last pool game on Sunday morning.

Our U14 Boys were next up on the Friday, playing against Wodonga in what was our U14 Euroa boys’ introduction to representative basketball.

The boys handled themselves well and took the opportunity to learn from the game and understand where they needed to adapt going forward.

Over the tournament the team continued to develop and showed glimpses of

Our U18 boys came into this season looking to build

on what they achieved last representative season and took on the challenge of entering division one in Echuca.

The team faced Wangaratta in their first game on Friday and fought back from a slow start to level things up early in the second half.

Failing to capitalise on some opportunities to take control of the game the Euroa squad allowed Wangaratta to hold on to a one point advantage at the final buzzer.

Following another close loss to hosts Echuca, the boys went into their semi-

final on Sunday against Wodonga who showed they were the form side early in the season and while playing a great game in what was consistently a high standard of basketball, Wodonga were the better team on the day, ultimately going on the win the grand final against Echuca.

Euroa Basketball Association now turns its attention to its Spring Domestic Competition with registrations still open via the Euroa Basketball Facebook page.

The noise from the crowd was like nothing heard before......the game was in the balance and things were electric.

With Echuca winning a crucial contest in the middle of the ground, forcing the ball forward they were able to be on the end of a couple of fortuitous free kicks which allowed them to kick away yet again.

The final siren sounded

with an exasperated Euroa outfit unable to claim victory, losing the match by a mere 12 points.

Despite the result the Euroa players, coaches, supporters and indeed the wider GVL crowd were left without any shadow of doubt the epic grand final witnessed at Deakin Reserve – something that will no doubt give rise to the 2023 aspirations of the Euroa side as they pursue the ultimate victory at this time next year.

The excitement was palpable throughout the club and town in the week leading up to the day – thanks indeed to all those businesses who displayed their support for the team and the club.

The game started off in magnificent fashion with both teams attacking the contest with much vigor and determination.

Echuca were able to convert this effort on the scoreboard and put up a

healthy 3 goal margin at the quarter time break – albeit they were kicking with a light breeze.

The midfield of Andrew Smith, Ben Giobbi (who was later awarded best finals player) and Jack Hellier were superb in providing plenty of the ball for their forwards.

Dan Garside had the job of nullifying Echuca playing coach Andrew Walker and he did so with wonderful effect.

The second quarter began with a bang as the Euroa forwards began to assert their authority on the contest.

Adam Giobbi was leading his group in the backline very well, making sure the likes of Nate Trotter and Jayden Gleeson were given every chance to take on the Echuca opposition and run the ball out of the backline.

game was working well, getting the ball past the Echuca defensive zone repeatedly.

The third quarter was where this game really lifted another notch or three – many in attendance were astounded as to how well both sides were playing despite the intense pressure.

Euroa boys Lachy Hill and Nate Stewart came together in one clash which resulted in a number of

stitches post–match for both players (cuts above the eye).

Ben Harrison was playing like he was 10 years younger – his reading of the play and stopping Echuca forward moves was a joy to watch.

Ben Bath started to assert himself round the ground with the cool heads of Tom Garside and Jack Frewen on display in the back half of the ground.

Captain Gus Varley was doing all he could alongside his partner in crime Andrew Bell to lift their team to yet a higher level.

The final quarter began

with Euroa a few goals shy of their Echuca counterparts.

This did not deter coach Rowan and assistant coach Poole in their determination to effect changes aimed at bringing about the unlikeliest of victories.

Jack Hellier grabbed the first clearance for the quarter as the Euroa forwards looked very dangerous.

With a goal or two slotted by the likes of Jett Trotter and Adam Giobbi (from 60 metres out) the Euroa side hit the front with less than 15 minutes left.

Check out 1920s the classics THE Australian National Show and Shine Euroa will celebrate this year’s theme of the 1920s with three classic vehicles from that decade being put on display.

A Capitol Chev named ‘Daisy’ from 1927 is one of the show and shine’s featured vehicles for this year.

Painted in an attractive pale yellow, she presents as being a beautiful Buttercup rather than a Daisy.

The car will form part of a special display at Centre Stage and arrives courtesy of Seymour’s Judi McGrath, who has owned Daisy since 2015.

The car’s claim to fame includes being one of the stars of the TV series set in the 1920s, ‘Carson’s Law’ which aired from 1982 to 1984.

Ms McGrath said the car was very well-travelled.

“As a curious side story, I bought an XJ40 (Jaguar) from Kyneton in 2018 and in talking to the seller, I found out he had owned Daisy in the 1990’s,” she said.

“He sold her to someone who drove her to Queensland.”

This model introduced several innovations at the time.

umn, along with the installation of a petrol gauge in the dashboard and a centrally located rear view mirror.

Available in eight body styles including two-door roadster and coupe, and four-door sedan and tourer, the Capitol Chev is powered by a four-cylinder OHV 2.8L (171 cu in) engine, with a threespeed manual transmission.

There will also be a 1920s race car on display, an Austin 7 Monoposto Special, lovingly

labelled ‘Lil Red Baron’ by owners Terry and Peter Cornelius of Corowa.

The Austin 7 was an economy car that was produced from 1923 until 1939 in the United Kingdom.

Many Austin 7s were rebuilt as ‘specials’ after the Second World War, including the first race car built by Bruce McLaren, and the first Lotus, the Mark I. With this background, and a supply of Austin 7 parts, includ-

ing a ‘rolling’ chassis just hanging around, Arthur Cornelius, together with sons Terry and Peter, decided that between them they could come up with Arthur’s long-time dream of having an Austin 7 special.

Cutting a long but very interesting story very short, the Cornelius Austin 7 Special racer was created in just six weeks, hand crafted by the Cornelius family and friends.

Terry Cornelius spoke about

how it felt to build the car.

“We were filled with pride when announcers labelled it the racer that was produced by the factory in 1923,” he said.

“Actually, we met those descriptions with mixed emotions, as we felt that ours was considerably better looking.”

Over the years since its build, the little car has proven itself to be very capable and reliable as well as being upgraded in various areas of its performance.

It has been in the hands of several owners since its creation, but these days and for the last few years it has been owned

by Peter, Terry and their good friend Peter Dowdle.

The third vehicle featured in the 1920s display is a 1929 Norton Motor Cycle, one of two Nortons being displayed by Euroa resident Garry MacDonald.

Also known as Model 18, the Norton is a British bike with an air-cooled single cylinder four stroke overhead valve engine with a single Amal carburettor and magneto ignition.

The single-cylinder Nortons have always had a reputation of being strong, durable motorcycles, resulting in many of these classic bikes being used in all forms of sporting events.

This particular motor cycle has a very significant contribution to local Euroa history, as it was originally owned by Garry’s father, Frank MacDonald, who did a mail run three days a week in the late 1940s and 1950s following his return to Australia after service in the RAAF during the Second World War. During this time, Mr MacDonald and the Norton (at times including a home-made side-car) did the mail run around Pranjip, Miepoll and Moglonemby and Riggs Creek.

Bushmaster vehicle secured AFTER being unable to secure an Abrams A1M1 Main Battle Tank due to logistical reasons, the Euroa Show and Shine will now display a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle.

The Bushmaster has been in been in the headlines lately, with Defence Minister Peter Dutton sending 20 of the $2.75m fighting vehicles to assist Ukraine.

It came as a great surprise when Australian National Show and Shine committee member Tony Clota announced that following representations to Mr Dutton, and subsequent negotiations with the commander in charge of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) joint operations support staff, he had secured a Bushmaster for display at the Euroa Show and Shine on Sunday, October 2.

Mr Clota had previously been hopeful of securing an Abrams A1M1 Main Battle Tank for the show, but this had not been possible due to some logistical problems in getting the tank to Euroa.

It turned out that with the Abrams weighing in at 62 tonnes, and with another 18.6

tonnes for its transporter, the ADF was not sure whether some bridges in the area would

hold the combined 80+ tonnes.

It was decided that the tank, transporter and most of Bur-

ton’s Bridge falling into the Seven Creeks would not have been appreciated, so the Bush-

master was secured as a worthy replacement attraction.

A leading armoured vehicle

manufactured in Bendigo, a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle is an personnel carrier designed to carry and rapidly deploy up to 10 battle-ready soldiers.

The four-wheel-drive vehicles are designed for all environments and are blastresistant, complete with flatrun tyres and a built-in selfinflation system.

Retired Australian Army major general Mick Ryan describes Bushmasters as a “wonderful Australian-designed and built machine”.

For the technically minded, Bushmaster is powered by a Caterpillar 3126E 7.2L sixcylinder diesel, turbocharged and delivering 224kW (300 hp) @ 2200rpm and 1166 Nm (860 lbâ‹…ft) @ 1440rpm.

Transmission is a six-speed ECOMAT with a top speed of over 100kph.

Bushmaster has a range of 800km, is fully air-conditioned and can sustain itself for a period of up to three days.

Armament consists of a range of mortar launchers, and three mounts for machine guns up to 7.62mm (one front and two rear).

‘Secret Weapon’, head turner GARY Bourke of Shepparton has exhibited a variety of cars and bikes at The Australian National Show and Shine Euroa for a number of years now and this year will be no different.

The car that he will be presenting once again this year, a somewhat innocent looking twotone green FC Holden has been there before.

From the outside it is certainly tidy and well-presented, but apart from its pristine presentation it really doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary.

That is, until you open the bonnet!

Lurking in the engine bay is a very fiery 202 motor.

It looks like it’s impatient for someone to hit the starter.

In fact, this car has had many successful outings on the drag strip, with results contradicting its passive appearance.

The FC Holden was originally launched by GMH in 1958, with a 2.2 litre (132ci) engine developing just 72 bhp (54 Kw.), and driving through a three-on-the- tree transmission.

The FC was a facelift of the FE model which replaced the “humpy” 48/FJ series.

Gary found his car some years later in 1976, at the panel shop of Shepparton racer Tino Leo and purchased it for about $250.

Engine wise, it wasn’t all that

brilliant and on a test run the battery fell into the fan, and a motor transplant was on the agenda.

The “old grey” was first replaced with a 186 red motor, which later gave way to a 202 engine out of a GTR XU1 LJ Torana.

Mr Bourke gave some insight into the engine.

“The 202 XU1 engine was built by my good friend David Baillie in 1984 and stayed in the car until mid-2016 - an exceptional engine that I still have,” he said.

The XU1 went well, but Gary wanted more.

We can’t say too much here, but Gary wants to express his thanks to Vince Whitehead for the exceptional work that he has

done on the car.

When we asked about power and torque output, Gary simply said these have been “significantly improved.”

Further upgrades included a 3-speed auto, with four-wheel disc brakes, front end from an

HR Holden and differential from a Commodore.

The diff is fairly high ratio at 3.08, to assist comfortable cruising.

Despite this, the FC can still get exciting under serious acceleration!

Wheels are now 14 inch to accommodate the disc brakes and are unremarkable, with just 7 inches of width at the rear, adding to the passive appearance of the car.

It presents as a genuine secret weapon.

Horses, trains, castles at Area 5 AT this year’s Australian National Shown and Shine Euroa, the magic Area 5 of the Seven Creeks Park will again be bustling with a variety of kids’ entertainment together with some unique attractions, including food and coffee outlets.

For the kids, the Hay Ho Jumping Castle will return.

Then there’s the great little petting zoo, with cute and cuddly animals for children to interact with.

The famous Euroa Mini Railway is up and running, with rides for all, and a new, recentlyadded “station” along the track.

This year will see the return of one of our most popular forms of family entertainment - Vicki and Bill Higgins, with “Blaze” and “Baddy”, their two Clydesdale cross draft horses.

This great attraction first appeared at our show in 2018.

The Higgins family are local people, hailing from Woodfield near Bonny Doon and have been in the horse and buggy business for around nine years.

Their association with draft horses goes back much further though, for more than 25 years.

At the event, you will see a bright yellow 4-wheel lorry (complete with 4-wheel disc brakes) with Vicki driving the two Clydesdale cross geldings.

In 2014, Clydesdales celebrated “100 years in harness at the Royal Melbourne Show.”

Vicki and Bill and Blaze and Baddy will be offering rides around the area at the event on October 2.

Children will love the big placid Clydesdales which are really an attraction in their own right, and riding in a carriage behind them is indeed an experience not to be forgotten.

Also in Area 5 will be the Benalla Aero Club’s 24 litre V12 Rolls Royce Merlin engine, the

“engine that won WW2”, when various versions powered the Spitfire and Mustang fighters, and the Lancaster and other heavy bombers in several Allied Air Forces.

The speedway and race cars live in Area 5 too, with a special display of pristine FJ Holdens on

show to help celebrate the Euroa Show and Shine’s tribute to the Holden in Australia, and the return of the “LapreCorn” race car.

Last but not least, the Australian Defence Force is bringing the $2.45m Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle, the

same armoured fighting vehicle that former Defence Minister Peter Dutton sent twenty units to Ukraine recently.

Another twenty have seen sent since that.

The wow factor I HAVE been around cars for a long time.

Perhaps, after a while I became complacent, and it took something really outstanding for me to get excited about.

But the “wow” factor kicked in when I first saw a magnificent 2002 Toyota Crown that had been restored by Justin Read.

The Crown is a luxury Japanese car, aimed at competing in the executive market with the likes of Mercedes Benz and BMW. Justin Read gave some insight about the car.

“This is my 2002 Toyota Crown Athlete V,” he said.

“It’s powered by the 1JZ-GTE, a turbocharged, 2.5 litre, inline 6 engine making 206 kilowatts and 378 Nm of torque, a figure in-line with the ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ of Japanese auto manufacturers that stood between the late 1980’s to early 2000’s.

“Drive is delivered to the rear wheels through the 4 speed Tiptronic A340E transmission.

“This is the 11th generation of the Toyota Crown and was inproduction from 1999 to 2003 for the sedan variant, production of the wagon continued until 2007.”

Justin took delivery of the car in October of 2020, after having it imported from Japan out of the USS Shizuoka Auctions.

It arrived very dirty, with the paint and exterior trims in serious need of some TLC. He began the process of replacing aged engine components that looked like they had not been touched since the car rolled off the assembly line.

Once the car was in a more mechanically reliable state, he turned his attention to the presentation of the car.

This involved sourcing a new set of headlights to replace the faded, yellow ones that were on the car, and replacing several interior trim components that were showing signs of wear and tear.

Next up was a set of Shockworks coilovers to replace the original suspension struts that were starting to sag.

Justin then purchased a set of Work Meister M1 3-piece wheels, with more aggressive specifications in order to fill out the wheel

wells a bit more than the original “Eurolines” were.

He then had the car professionally paint corrected and ceramic coated.

The color is paint code 202 “Black Onyx” “The result was fantastic,” Justin said.

“The paint had come up nearly flawless and I finally had the car in a place that I was happy with aesthetically.”

That lasted a total of just four weeks before all going down the drain.

Justin had parked the car in the morning and gone to work for the day.

After finishing work and walking back to the car, he found that someone had broken into it.

The car was a disaster area!

The rear quarter window on the driver’s side had been smashed, the key barrel broken in half and the dashboard had been ripped apart in order to gain access to the ignition wiring.

It appeared the would-be thieves had attempted to hot wire the car so that it could be stolen.

Luckily, that wasn’t the case, the immobilizer used in these cars is essentially fool proof and prevented it being started.

“The end result was a rolling paperweight, because the key barrel had been destroyed, the car couldn’t be started,” Justin said.

“After going back and forth with my insurance company, the car was ruled a total loss.

“I was told that the parts to fix my car were too hard to source and therefore would not be repairable.

“I chose to buy back the car as salvage and decided to give the repair work a go myself.

“After a few months of searching, I found another black Crown that had been written off in a rear end collision out in Geelong.

“I made the trip down after work one Friday night and managed to source all of the parts I needed to fix mine.

“I spent the next few weekends pulling out all the damaged components from my car and swapping in the new parts, translating Japanese wiring

diagrams to repair the mangled ignition wiring and replacing the complete rear driver’s side door, as the rear quarter windows were no longer in production.”

That’s the story of Justin’s car up until this point.

He says that from here on, the Crown will be reserved just for weekend duties and car meets.

No more driving it to work!

“My ultimate goal for the car is to modify it to what I consider an “OEM Plus” stage,” he said.

“I’d like to get the car to around the 300-kilowatt mark with a bigger turbo.

“Install a shift kit in the transmission to make it a bit more responsive.

“Being a luxury car, the shifts are smooth, but quite lazy.

“Perhaps install some bigger brakes and fit up adjustable suspension arms to replace the fairly basic suspension setup that these cars came with.

“Once all that work is done, I’ll consider the car “finished” and then hang onto it forever!”

Needless to say, we have invited Justin to bring the Crown along to the Australian National Show and Shine in Euroa on Sunday, October 2.

The red LapreCorn is back COROWA motor racing enthusiast Terry Cornelius has been a long-standing supporter of the Australian National Show and Shine Euroa, displaying a variety of vintage racing cars.

In 2019 he brought something special in the form a race car that was virtually homemade by a series of owners, the LapreCorn.

It looks like a Maserati, has a name that sounds like a small Irish fairy, and has been over sixty years in the making.

In early 2019, the Corowa Free Press reported on Terry’s project.

“A long-time historic and speedway racer, Terry said this ‘grey’ Holden engined special was laid down by prominent special builder Don Lapham of Orange,” they said.

“Don had big plans for his creation, but the project stalled indefinitely prior to 1960.

“By that stage, it was a well formed tubular chassis with its suspension and steering principles and drive-line in place.”

Sydney’s Tony Skinner became its next owner, but no further progress was made until Terry acquired the rolling chassis in 1990.

In spite of its progress, it remained stalled for a further extended period but good strides have been made in recent times.

The chassis is of a tubular space frame construction, incorporating a ‘Grey’ Holden engine with triple SU carburettors adapted to a Singer Nine 4-spd gearbox driving a heavily modified Holden differential centre which supports early Holden brakes mounted inboard.

Rear suspension is via a transverse spring with modified FC Holden (front) lower control arms and employing made-up uprights.

Earlier in 2022, the LapreCorn made an appearance at the Winton historic meeting in May, with Terry’s daughter Chelsea at the wheel.

sion problem cut the car’s appearance short, but Terry has specifically asked if he could bring it to this year’s show and shine.

Terry told us about the story behind the car’s intriguing name of LapreCorn.

The surname of the original builder was “LAPham”.

This was before it reached the current owner, “CORNelius.”

So, a combination of parts of these names became Lap (pre) Corn.

With a name which sounds curiously like leprechaun, the legendary Irish fairy who guards the legendary pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it was reasonable that there should be some connection to that name.

As a result, Terry devised a logo for the car, consisting of a very individual couple of stickers on the sides which signify a tiny Leprechaun where the

3-tiered crown of the Maserati would be.

So, what’s the connection to Maserati?

Having attended the early Grands Prix at Albert Park in the late 1950s together with his father Arthur, Terry had developed a love for the 250F Maserati.

Hence the car’s unmistakable resemblance to the car that Stirling Moss drove to victory on that memorable occasion.

The Maserati 250F was a racing car made by Maserati of Italy used in ‘2.5 litre’ Formula One racing between January 1954 and November 1960.

26 examples were made.

Stirling Moss later said that the 250F was the best frontengined F1 car he drove.

The application of the 6 cylinder Holden grey engine works perfectly with the theme of the 2.6 litre Maserati

A6, although it’s doubtful whether the old grey would have the same power output.
