Pony dies in tragic attack THE Violet Town community is mourning the tragic passing of their miniature horse ‘Dannie’ following an attack by two dogs last week.

Ann and Tony Smith have paid tribute to Dannie, remembering the 22 year old stallion for all of the joy he provided to their family and the wider community.

“He was only 32 inches high, so he was very tiny,” Mrs Smith said.

“He’d done so much work helping people with disabilities and the elderly.

“Dannie even went to the Violet Town pub a few times too, something that had been on the Facebook pages in the past.

“He was enjoying his retirement.”

The Smith family also expressed their gratitude to everyone for their support during the tough time, including the rangers who were quick to act on the scene.

“The support has just been unbelievable,” Mrs Smith said.

“Thanks to everyone for their messages, their help with the GoFundMe page, it’s just been incredible.

“To the rangers, you can’t question them they were just unbelievable.”

There has been a huge outpouring of support from people across the shire, with several statements posted on both the Euroa and Violet Town Community Noticeboard pages expressing their shock and sadness over the tragic event.

The two dogs responsible were located and put down following the attack.

MP holds healthcare discussions in Euroa

By GUS RIDDER MEMBER for Northern Victoria Tania Maxwell was in Euroa last week to discuss the needs of the healthcare sector with Euroa Health, calling for further investment from the State Government.

Ms Maxwell spoke to community members on Binney Street following a discussion with Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter, highlighting some of the major talking points and issues raised during their conversation.

“It was a great meeting with Cherree and Euroa Health, just talking about the importance of having these rural and regional hospitals,” Ms Maxwell said.

Investment in the local hospital was a major topic of conversation, with Ms Maxwell stating that not enough government support was going towards Euroa Health.

“It’s something that we’ve advocated for, to have that equity in what is spent and invested in,” she said.

“It’s just as important in a rural and regional health sector as it is in our metropolitan sector.

“We know that the health sector is under so much pressure now, so we have to do whatever can be done for these hospitals.

“Unfortunately, we know the government doesn’t invest the amount that they could, or should, towards this region’s hospital.”

Ms Maxwell discussed one of the key reasons behind the facilities in Euroa receiving less funding than other comparable hospitals.

“The government treats it as a private hospital, but ironically if you were admitted to the hospital, you would not require private health insurance,” she said.

“You can absolutely be treated as a public patient.

“The irony of that is a really good debate for govern-

Ms Maxwell was quick to point out the positive outcomes that the facilities in Euroa provide for patients and their families, but reiterated that this will only be able to continue with further funding from government.

“Look at what this hospital contributes to the community,” she said.

“There are a significant number of healthcare options for people, not only in the aged care sector but in the hospital and through outreach.

“Staffing capacity will have an impact on this, so we need to find a way to ensure sustainability and make sure staff remain in the role.

“That only comes with the support and guarantee of investment.

“The op-shop (Bowerbird) contributes an enor-

mous amount but a community can only give so much.

“I think it’s the government’s responsibility to ensure that these communities have a health service that can keep people in its town, not only does that provide a great health outcome it also provides the ability for family to visit which in turn helps with the patient’s mental health.”

Aged care was also discussed during Ms Maxwell’s visit, with the Member for Northern Victoria talking about elder abuse in the sector.

“These people are heading towards the end of their life and should be treated with the upmost respect,” she said.

“They’ve paid their taxes and contributed to their communities for the entirety of their life.

“It’s not a time for them to be ignored citizens.”

Ms Maxwell spoke about the rising number of sexual abuse reports in the aged care sector and what that would require from the facilities.

“We know that reports of assaults are increasing,” she said.

“In that situation, these people certainly need to be supported.

“We don’t want to put extra pressure on the facilities, but we want to make sure staff are properly trained.

“If someone in the facility makes a claim, it should not then be up to the facility to determine the decision.

“It should go to the police.

“We don’t want to put any blame on the aged care facilities whatsoever, but these elderly people deserve a voice.”

Ms Maxwell also visited Avenel and Seymour to discuss matters with the community.

By Sally Tobin and the Longwood Action Group WHAT an amazing day the Longwood Football Netball Club put together last Saturday when Cam Mooney came to play for the club.

The day was a credit to everyone involved so hop onto the club’s social media and check out some of the news and thanks for the day.

Well done once again to Ricki Shiner and his fabulous support team of players and community members who made the day such a success.

The Longwood Primary School toilet block is completed (except for a few minor issues that are being worked on) and the post erected for their new shade sail which will hopefully also be completed soon.

The ground works have commenced for our modgrass play area which we anticipate will be completed before the end of term three.

Help the Longwood Primary School turn bread bags into school play equipment.

Thanks to everyone who is collecting bags for us keep them coming.

We have filled one box and nearly filled the second .

The closing date for bags is September 9.

We have the barbecue fundraiser at Bunnings on Sunday, July 17 and families are asked to help out by donating goods or with the roster for the day please.

Longwood Playgroup is held weekly each Tuesday of the school term at the Longwood Primary School at 9am.

Come along and enjoy songs, morning tea and play.

The Longwood Red Cross would love to have some new members join.

They have been active in the community since the 1940s and it would be disappointing if they had to fold due to lack of numbers.

There is a meeting next Friday, July 29 at 2pm at the White Hart Hotel so if you would like to join or come along to the meeting please contact Margaret Berry on her Facebook page.

ARTC responds to delay claims

By GUS RIDDER THE Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has responded to comments made by Independent Member for Indi Helen Haines regarding delays on the Euroa redevelopment, stating that the assessment of options is still underway.

“ARTC knows the community are waiting patiently for an update on our design plans for Euroa as part of Inland Rail,” an ARTC spokesperson said.

“ARTC have completed our assessments of both the road overpass, and road underpass designs and we are currently in discussions with the Victorian Department of Transport on ARTC’s preferred design option.

“The assessment of the options, as well as the approvals process is complex, and our team continues to work closely with state agencies on a preferred solution.

“We look forward to announcing a preferred option as soon as possible.”

Last week, Dr Haines said the ARTC had missed the assigned deadline of July 1 and had failed to notify the Euroa community of a decision about the track’s crossing.

The ARTC originally proposed to increase the height of the cur-

rent Anderson Street overpass in Euroa, but locals have campaigned instead for an underpass, arguing a higher bridge would be an eyesore and create an unnecessary division in the town.

A working group for the bridge design was first formed in 2019,

comprising of representatives from the local community, council, the ARTC and the Department of Transport.

The Euroa community continues to eagerly await a decision regarding the Euroa redevelopment.

Birrell slams government FMD response

By GUS RIDDER ACCORDING to Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, the Labor Government’s handling of the serious Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) biosecurity has been ‘little short of atrocious’.

Mr Birrell says the Federal Government has had weeks to implement measures that would prevent the transmission of the disease into Australia.

Together with shadow minister for trade and tourism Kevin Hogan, the Member for Nicholls spent last week meeting with leading dairy and meat processors in the Goulburn Valley.

These industry leaders are said to have highlighted the importance of having additional biosecurity measures in place to protect their primary production.

“Victoria exports $11.4 billion of food and $3.1 billion of animal fibre annually.

“If the disease is detected in Australian livestock, an immediate livestock standstill will come into effect and export doors will be closed.

“The Labor Government must immediately implement stronger measures to reduce the likelihood of FMD entering Australia.”

Meanwhile, fragments of both FMD and African Swine Fever (ASF) were detected in pork

products at a Victorian retail outlet last week.

While the fragments are not transmissible, a statement from Agriculture Victoria said the detection shows how easily diseases and pests could enter Australia.

Agriculture Victoria is undertaking FMD-specific training, scenario planning, and participating in emergency exercises to ensure they’re ready to respond quickly if there is a positive detection in livestock.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt announced late on Friday that new biosecurity measures would require travellers from Indonesia to sanitise their shoes when arriving at airports across Australia.

From Saturday, all returning travellers from Indonesia must now clean their shoes and walk over sanitation mats to prevent the spread.

GOOD NEWS FOR COMMUTERS: Upgrades to the North East Line and more VLocity trains are expected to create shorter travel times along the Albury line starting August.

Faster trains for North East commuters PASSENGERS on the North East Line will soon enjoy faster, smoother journeys with the launch of a new timetable unlocking the benefits of major track works and new trains.

The new timetable for the trains will be introduced from August 28 and is expected to cut travel times by between seven and 27 minutes.

The changes are being made possible by the North East Line upgrade and a roll out of faster VLocity trains.

All six daily services are expected to have shorter journey times, with early morning passengers enjoying savings of almost 20 minutes and those travelling on the evening 6.02pm service from Southern Cross arriving home to Albury close to half an hour earlier than before.

The Andrews Labor Government has invested in the new VLocity trains as part of a $340 million investment for 18 new trains including six standard-gauge

trains for the Albury line.

The VLocity is the newest and fastest train in the V/Line fleet and has improved features including mobile signal boosters for better phone coverage and better accessibility for people with prams or mobility aids.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the newer trains would make a big difference for the region.

“Through the North East Line Upgrade, and our investment in six new long haul VLocity trains, we’re delivering better public transport for regional Victoria,” Ms Symes said.

The trains were designed and built especially for the Albury Line based on feedback from local passenger representatives and feature bespoke catering facilities as well as extra luggage space and bike storage.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the requests of the North East had been heard.

“We’re giving passengers on the Albury Line what we promised - new trains and faster, more comfortable services,” Ms Allan said.

“We are delivering a fast, reliable and more modern VLocity train service to more people in regional Victoria.”

The start of the new timetable follows the end of essential maintenance work by the ARTC during August to further improve long term track reliability and will see all services on the Albury Line run by VLocity trains.

The new trains will soon commence stabling overnight at Albury Station after improvements funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments were completed, enabling all services on the line to run as VLocity trains.

Next generation of nurses and midwifes supported to enter workforce GOULBURN Valley Health, which services Strathbogie Shire residents, will be the recipient of extra nursing and midwifery students to support the healthcare workforce.

As part of the Victorian Budget 2022/23, the Labor Government invested $59 million to create 1125 registered undergraduate student nurse positions per year for two years and $9.8 million to create 75 registered undergraduate student midwife positions.

Last week, Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas visited Sunshine Hospital to announce the hospitals and services to benefit from the first 1000 of these positions of registered second and third year nursing and midwifery students.

Notable inclusions nearby were Goulburn Valley Health, Albury Wodonga Health, and Kyabram and District Health.

Working under the supervision of a registered nurse or midwife, students help with showering, feeding and transferring patients.

Over time, they take on more complex tasks, such as monitoring vital signs,

They claim that participants are more likely to complete their degree, develop greater levels of confidence and require less support as they transition to graduates.

Midwifery students are given additional opportunities to help on maternity wards and under the supervision of experienced midwives, deliver care and support to new mums and their babies.

The training offered to students gives them the latest skills and expertise in patient care and builds their confidence within the hospital.

Programs like this one provide immediate support to the existing nursing workforce as they face record demand due to a challenging flu season, the emergence of new variants causing a rise in hospitalisations and an increasing number of unwell healthcare workers - while also investing in the healthcare system for years to come.

“Healthcare systems across Australia are under pressure - providing more opportunities for student nurses to enter the workforce and while they get on-the-job training is just one way we’re relieving pressure on the system,” Ms Thomas said.

In addition to giving more students this sort of hands-on experience, a targeted $162 million package was announced last week to help paramedics and hospitals work together to improve patient flow and get patients the care they need sooner - as the nation faces record levels of demand for emergency care.

New equipment for Hume hospitals The State Labor Government has confirmed funding for improved healthcare for families in the Hume region, with upgraded equipment now being used at Alexandra District Health.

Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas announced $372,000 worth of new world-class endoscopy equipment to get more locals into treatment quicker and closer to home.

“Everyone deserves access to quality health care facilities and services close to home and we’re ensuring people in Alexandra and surrounding communities have exactly that,” Ms Thomas said.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes agreed on the benefits of the new equipment.

“The doctors and nurses at Alexandra District Health do an outstanding job and this new and upgraded endoscopy equipment will allow them to treat more locals and help save lives,” Ms Symes said.

THE State Labor Government is planning to drive down emissions and boost jobs and industry by co-delivering Australia’s first ever renewable hydrogen highway on the east coast with the New South Wales Government.

The Victorian Government have invested $10 million in grant funding for the Hume Hydrogen Highway, a joint grant initiative to support the development of at least four refuelling stations along the highway and about 25 hydrogen-powered trucks.

Applications are now open for $20 million in grant funding to support the design and delivery of renewable hydrogen trucking along Australia’s busiest freight corridor, thanks to co-funding by the Victorian and New South Wales Governments.

“Australia’s busiest corridor is the perfect place to kickstart the transition to a zero-emission freight sector,” minister for energy and minister for environment and climate action Lily D’Ambrosio said.

“The renewable hydrogen highway will create new jobs, drive investment across the east coast and is a landmark step towards meeting Victoria’s target to halve emissions by 2030 as we work towards net-zero by 2050.”

Acting Minister for Veterans Ros Spence announced that organisations can apply for funding through the Anzac Day Proceeds Fund and the Victoria Remembers grant programs.

The grant programs are part of the Labor Government’s plans to continue the recognition of veterans and their families, providing support to ensure they can thrive.

“Veterans give so much for this state and this country - it’s vital we ensure they are supported in every facet of their civilian life and that their sacrifice is remembered for generations to come,” Ms Spence said.

The fund supports ex-service organisations to deliver a range of activities that boost the wellbeing of Victoria’s veteran community.

Grants of up to $150,000 are available to organisations that provide state-wide services to veterans and their families, and grants of up to $50,000 to those that provide area or region-specific services.

Previous recipients include Guitars for Vets Australia, which used funding of $16,500 to support music therapy and guitar lessons for younger veterans experiencing PTSD. Funding is also available

The Victorian Veterans Council, an independent advisory body that helps ensure veterans are at the heart of policies and projects that affect them,

assesses and allocates funding for both these important grant programs.

“We look forward to seeing applications for projects that will make a difference to the veteran community and help to ensure their service is honoured,” Victorian Veteran Council chair Greg Yorke said.

Victorian regional jobless rate the lowest VICTORIA’S sustained economic recovery is providing new jobs across the state with regional unemployment now the lowest in the nation, new Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures reveal.

The regional unemployment rate dropped to 3.2 per cent in the three months to June, down 0.3 percentage points, as the number of regional Victorians in work grew by 3400 to more than 746,000.

The national regional unemployment rate stands at 3.9 per cent.

The Labor Government say they have created more than 620,000 new jobs since 2014 - one in six of the record 3.54 million Victorian jobs that exist today.

They also claim that businesses impacted by the effects of the global pandemic have continued to rebound strongly, saying the more than $13 billion in business support provided by the Labor Government has been instrumental in providing a foundation for renewal.

“There are more Victorians in work than ever before - an incredible achievement that demonstrates the strength of our economic recovery,” Treasurer Tim Pallas said.

Events for Afghanistan SEVERAL fundraising events and activities will be held across the region during August, bringing attention and raising money for the Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) National Fund for Afghanistan.

Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan last year, people living in communities across Indi have been sponsoring 35 of a total 77 vulnerable Afghan families for Humanitarian visas through the RAR sponsorship program.

RAR groups across Australia, including RAR-Strathbogie Shire, have donated funds to provide food accommodation and document preparation for many vulnerable Afghans.

During this period the majority of sponsored Afghans are Hazara, an ethnic minority long persecuted by the Taliban.

Many families are separated, experiencing persecution, torture and execution threats.

The Afghan people are struggling to survive increasing violence targeting Hazara communities across Afghanistan.

Two deadly bombings in April killed 126 Hazara boys and teenagers in a Kabul high school, injuring 176 people.

A great variety of music was played throughout the afternoon, with tunes continuing from 1pm until 3.30pm.

The 30 people who attended all had a wonderful afternoon enjoying the music, singing along to some classic songs they were familiar with.

There was also some fantastic dancing in the crowd.

COVID hits a third of aged care homes AGED care providers are calling for urgent action to protect residents and staff from a winter COVID-19 wave which is hitting more than one third of the country’s facilities.

Aged & Community Care Providers Association said 6000 residents and 3400 staff were infected in 1013 facilities as of Thursday.

The association’s interim chief executive Paul Sadler said 10-15 per cent of staff are already isolating or quarantining at home, and the coming

weeks will put intense pressure on aged care residents and workers.

“ACCPA is concerned that anywhere up to two-thirds of aged care homes could be affected by active outbreaks over coming weeks,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

“The increased availability in surge workforce including the Australian Defence Force over the past week has been welcome, but there is still a shortfall.

“The reality is we can’t leave older people without adequate

levels of care for too long.”

Mr Sadler said 2301 residents have died in 2022, including 114 in the past week.

He called for more support for a surge workforce, including ADF personnel, until at least September.

Over the longer term, Mr Sadler said, the federal government must plan to fix chronic workforce shortfalls, prepare for future outbreaks and implement reforms recommended by the recent royal commission into aged care.

“The coming weeks are crit-

ical for aged care. We must do all we can to put the protection of older people first and support our aged care workers,” he said.

Meanwhile, the number of Australians who have died with the virus has surpassed 11,000.

The country’s death toll rose by more than 100 on Saturday, with Victoria recording the most fatalities at 44.

NSW reported 41 deaths, while Queensland recorded eight, South Australia and the ACT three, and Western

Australia two.

Tasmania also reported one death, while the Northern Territory recorded none.

The daily toll pushed the country’s deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 11,134.

As of Saturday, a little more than 71 per cent of Australia’s eligible population had received three or more vaccine doses.

That was an increase of more than 9500 people on the previous day, with booster coverage among aged care

About 55 per cent of eligible Indigenous people have received three or more vaccine doses.

Climate, budget high on parliament agenda CLIMATE change, cost-of-living pressures and a “confronting” budget update are set to dominate the first week of Australia’s new parliament.

Tackling the aged care, labour and domestic violence crises are also high on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s legislative agenda.

The opening of the 47th parliament began with the necessary pomp and ceremony on Tuesday, as 151 MPs and 72 senators were sworn in.

A new House Speaker and Senate President will need to be elected to take over from Liberal MPs Andrew Wallace and Slade Brockman, respectively.

In the upper house, West Australian Labor senator Sue Lines is expected to be elected President.

Queensland Labor MP Milton

Dick will have the support of his colleagues to rise to Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Governor-General David Hurley will outline the Labor government’s priorities for the next three years in an address to parliament.

For the first time in nine years, Labor MPs will sit on the right-hand side of the lower house chamber.

Labor’s Tony Burke confirmed on Sunday that the 16-strong crossbench will get three questions each sitting day.

“If you give them two, it’s below the percentage quota there are on the opposition benches ... three is a little bit above,” he told the ABC. “So the way we are balancing it out is they will be a little bit above their technical quota in terms of number of questions.”

In the last parliament, only one

question from the six-member crossbench was permitted per sitting day.

Mr Burke also ruled out dumping Dorothy Dixers in Question Time, which allows the government to ask questions of itself.

Mr Albanese said at least 18 pieces of legislation will be introduced in the first week, as the government didn’t want to “waste a day”.

“Australia has had a decade of neglect and drift. We want to make sure we get on with the reforms that are necessary in order to advance Australia’s interests in order to create a better future,” he told Sky News.

The opposition is expected to hammer the government about the foot and mouth disease outbreak in Indonesia and the subsequent biosecurity measures.

Wages will ‘move’ in Labor Government’s first term EMPLOYMENT Minister Tony Burke has vowed wages will “move” in the Albanese government’s first term, saying it had been fighting for growth from “day one”.

Mr Burke also said “everything is on the table” as the government considers fixing enterprise bargaining - to be

discussed at the Jobs and Skills Summit in September - in a bid to get workers pay rises.

“In this term, you’ll see wages moving,” he told the ABC on Sunday.

“Certainly on the wage price index, on wages themselves, we intend to get them moving. We want people

to be getting ahead.”

When asked about the proposed deal between the Australian Council of Trade Unions and the Business Council of Australia, where union approved deals would be fasttracked even if a worker could be worse off, Mr Burke said he would “be inclined to grab it”.

There will be 35 new members taking a seat in the House of Representatives and their inaugural speeches are set to continue through to October.

Parliamentary rules say lower house members cannot contribute to debates before they have given their first speech.

The crossbench has urged the government to prioritise the first speeches of independent MPs so that they can speak on other debates.

In the Senate - where 12 newbies will give their first speeches - the same rule does not apply and senators simply need to declare “this is not my first speech” before making remarks in the chamber.

The government’s climate change bill will be the big ticket item in the first weeks of parliament.

Labor intends to enshrine a 43 per cent emissions-reduction target by 2030 into a law that will also require the climate minister to report annually to parliament on Australia’s progress.

A proposal to introduce 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave will also be unveiled in the first week.

Proposed aged care reforms will include putting nurses back into nursing homes, stopping high administration and management fees and improving integrity and accountability for residential facilities.

In the jobs and skills sector, the government will propose to establish a new statutory body to provide independent advice on workforce needs and help tackle Australia’s labour crisis.

Andrews slams ‘hateful’ Victorian Liberal pick VICTORIAN Premier Daniel Andrews has criticised the Liberal party’s endorsement of controversial Melton City councillor Moira Deeming, calling her political ideologies “hateful” and “transphobic”.

Ms Deeming was endorsed for preselection at a Liberal convention on Saturday night

in the contest for the upper house Western Metropolitan Region seat in the state election.

The high school teacher and a mother-of-four will replace MP Bernie Finn.

Mr Andrews and Health minister Mary-Anne Thomas expressed outrage over the

endorsement, saying her political views are harmful to the LGBTQI community.

“I’m not here to comment on the Liberal Party and some of the transphobic, homophobic and frankly, unVictorian kind of hatred. This spite just doesn’t work,” Mr Andrews said.

From mid-July, we will be upgrading the Wilbrahams Road level crossing to feature boom gates, flashing lights and bells, as well as improved train detection technology. Works will include widening drainage and asphalting 240 metres of road.

The survey findings will help identify opportunities to support and educate the community about fruit fly control and management.

Goulburn Murray Valley Fruit Fly Area Wide Management Program coordinator, Ross Abberfield said the short survey takes about 2 minutes to complete and is accessible through the program’s website at www.fruitflycontrol.com.au.

“We’re asking property owners and anyone with a vegie garden, fruit tree or interest in gardening to take a couple of minutes and complete the survey,” he said.

“By participating in the survey, community members can play an active role in informing and identifying important education activities that are aimed at supporting the community manage fruit fly.”

The program was established in 2017 and brings together government, industry and the community to apply control and education measures across the whole region.

Researchers note this role in health and reveal evidence hard to refute.

Mind Health Report (2014), confirmed, people who engage in private prayer, intercessory pray and church activities are healthier and live longer. Fr Hobby on to new pastures

By HEATHER BAMFORD THE parishioners of the Anglican Parish of Euroa attended the penultimate church service of local priest, Father Paul Hobby, supported by the Diocese of Wangaratta Bishop Clarence Bester on Sunday.

Bishop Clarence was in attendance for one of his regular visits to parishes across the diocese.

Fr Paul Hobby, his wife Lisa and their children, Faith and Grace, came to Euroa in early January, 2020 and Fr Paul was inducted into the Anglican Parish of Euroa on January 25, 2020.

For Fr Paul, he was back in familiar territory having attended St Paul’s church prior to deciding to become a priest, so it was a very easy transition into his new role within the parish.

He has a very approachable manner and has been more than willing to get out there and visit many parishioners who found it difficult to get to church and church events.

Then, COVID struck.

Not to be deterred, Fr Paul took on the challenge of these times throughout 2020 and 2021, and continued to provide the outreach that was extremely vital especially for those in isolation.

Church services were provided via Zoom and Paul endeavoured to assist the many parishioners who did not have

This determination could be seen when many dedicated church people would be on the vicarage verandah, listening and/or viewing the week’s church service.

Meetings continued unabated and some of the other regular church events were also held using whatever technology was available.

Fr Paul and other parishioners would be in regular contact with locals despite the challenges, as everyone could understand the difficulties of feeling isolated.

His commitment included time spent in Violet Town and Longwood and also making contact with those in GraniteHill and the Violet Town Nursing Home.

In between COVID outbreaks and lockdowns, he was not to be deterred and church services and other church activities resumed but with restrictions.

During his short time in this parish, he remained focused on getting the job done both in and around the church and into the community.

The op shop continues to flourish but now with a muchneeded storage space, sitting unobtrusively behind the shop.

Fr Paul kept an eye on the grounds and he was often seen pruning and trimming trees using his arborist skills.

“The family were sad to be leaving the parish but they were all looking ahead to new challenges,” Fr Paul said.

“It had not been an easy decision but it was what was needed at this stage of my life.”

Fr Paul and Lisa were given gifts by the church and the girls loved some special t-shirts that were chosen for them so that they wouldn’t forget Euroa.

Following the service, all in attendance were invited across to the church hall to enjoy a delicious light luncheon.

Another special focus for the day was the dedication of the hall kitchen in honor of Michael Coe. Michael Coe and his wife Joan have worked tirelessly on the refitting of this space and Michael especially would often be seen working on yet another project within the kitchen.

The Hobby family are now settled in the town of Hagley, Tasmania (south of Launceston).

It is hoped that their time in the Anglican Parish of Euroa is not forgotten and that their new location is all that they wish it to be.

My condolences go to all the family and friends of these three respected folk.

I met Robin Steers in the 1980s when he and wife Carolyn came to Avenel and knew her parents Ethyl and John Dallwitz who had a property there too.

I saw Sam, Belinda and Ben grow up and have families.

Robin Steers was well known in the district and served as a Strathbogie Shire councillor and mayor.

Doreen Taylor was a much loved and respected friend.

Her daughter Glenys and son in law Paul Lejins ran the local district dental service.

John and I attended her funeral at Warracknabeal Christ Church last Thursday and shared our sympathy to her family and friends there.

Herma Duthie and I both many years ago worked for local district newspapers, in Nagambie, Puckapunyal, Seymour and Avenel.

Also both as public servants with the army at Puckapunyal and lived similar defence family lives.

I was able to perform her memorial service on Friday, July 15 for her family and friends in Seymour and share many happy memories.

I believe that funerals and memorial ceremonies acknowledge the separation from life as it was with that person, to a new and unknown way of being.

These ceremonies can open the way for healing and acceptance.

A ceremony allows a community to come together to sustain one another, to reassure those who are grieving that they are not alone.

MANGALORE PUB RE-OPENS: Years ago

our family and friends enjoyed going to the Mangalore Railway Hotel for a meal, a game of pool and social get togethers.

The old 19th century pub bar re-opened last Friday on the Old Hume Highway at Mangalore after being closed for over a decade.

Hopefully meals will be served once the kitchen has been revamped.

Community nights, trivia, bingo, and entertainment nights would be welcomed to hold there.

Cash boost for history

By GUS RIDDER MINISTER for government services Danny Pearson last week announced the 40 projects that will share in $350,000 as part of the Local History Grants program, including the Nagambie Historical Society.

The grants program is run

by Public Record Office Victoria to support community and history organisations to preserve, record and share Victoria’s local history.

“These grants aid the protection of Victoria’s unique local history, supporting groups to showcase and share the voices, works and places of significance that have shaped our lives and the lives of those who came before us,” Mr Pearson said.

“I congratulate all of this year’s grant recipients whose important work contributes significantly to keeping the history of our state alive now and into the future.”

Nagambie Historical Society will receive $11,250 funding to upgrade the Nagambie Museum, with Mr Pearson delivering the good news in person in the Goulburn Valley last week.

The works will include the installation of modern display cases and furnishings to better preserve and display items and help to ensure the future of the museum and its important role in the community.

“Our Local History Grant will be invaluable in updating and modernising displays in the Nagambie Museum - an important showcase of local family histories and the history of our town,” Nagambie Historical Society president Bob McMaster said.

Central Highlands Broadcasting Inc is receiving support to interview pioneers of women’s football in Victoria on the establishment and

growth of the Victorian Women’s Football League across its 30-year history.

A number of historical sites across Victoria also received funding to install interpretative signage, including the Fire Services Museum in East Melbourne, the Chiltern Athenaeum Museum, Golden Square Pool, Gunbower Heritage River Trail, the Queenscliff Maritime Museum, Sandy Point Community Group and the Mornington Lifesaving Club.

Some went on to add colour to their prints, using water colour paints, whilst others took a break for a yarn by the fire.

Dana developed her love for these methods of printmaking in Indonesia, where she practiced with both adults and children.

“It gives you a good op-

portunity to take a close look at the vegetation around you and it’s so easy to get beautiful results quickly,” she said.

Strathbogie Ranges Conservation Management Network will be hosting a series of art workshops over the coming months that aim to bring new insights into the natural world.

This Awe and Wonder in Nature project is funded

by Landcare and is an invitation for participants to connect more deeply with their environment.

Patterns, Pathways & Mapping the Otherworld with Sim Ayres is next.

This will be a hands-on workshop and conversation on pattern recognition and map making what maps tell us about the world and what they could represent if we stretched our imagination.

This could include mapping from the perspective of a wombat or an ant, from the movement of lichen and moss over rocks and the slow time of erosion.

It will be held on Sunday, August 7 at Mount Wombat, on the Tableland.

A GROUP of people came together by an open fire at Polly McQuinn’s on Sunday to learn printmaking techniques from local artist, Dana Coleman.

Participants walked around this wonderful spot collecting leaves, seed heads and natural objects.

Dana then demonstrated how to monoprint these objects onto paper and create a rubbing with graphite.

TENS of thousands of Victorians are taking up the home-based care programs across the state – easing pressure on the health system – with almost 56,000 people receiving care from the comfort of their home since Better at Home started last year.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health MaryAnne Thomas visited St Vincent’s Hospital yesterday, which has one of the fastest growing home-based care programs in the state – with a 95 per cent increase in home-based care in the last year.

Better at Home allows Victorians to access experienced nurses, clinicians and allied health professionals at home, surrounded by their loved ones, as part of a more convenient and tailored experience for patients.

The program also worksto free up much-needed capacity across our hospital network, with an extra 200 beds freed up across Victoria since the program started in July last year.

Since the program began, regional health services have also delivered more than 71,000 daysthat would have been spent in hospital at home for almost 10,000 patients across 25 regional health services in Hume, Barwon, Gippsland, Loddon Mallee, and the Grampians.

Social tennis continues through wintery weather

By RHONDA CARPENTER THE courts were damp and the air chilly when Mansfield Black welcomed Benalla to play last Monday.

Players kept on their layers of warm garments.

Black’s Jenny Bell and Di Ellis returned consistently against Benalla’s Kate Campbell and Maureen Jewell neutralising their power and courtcraft.

The lengthy set was decided in a tiebreak going Black’s way seven-three.

Black’s Rhonda Carpenter and Jenny Smith relaxed into their set against Benalla’s Debbie Moore and Wendy Maxwell not letting the visitors into the contest.

Surprising themselves the pair took the set eight-0 allowing time to watch the arm wrestle on the adjacent court and to chat with their opponents.

When Bell and Carpenter got to a six-two lead in their set, Campbell and Moore warmed to the contest and drew level.

The visitors took the set in a tiebreak seven-five.

Black, however took all the

remaining sets with Jenny Smith awarded player of the day for her strong performance.

Mansfield Black won five/47 to one/26 and slipped into third spot on the ladder behind Benalla who were pushed from top to second.

Mansfield Blue’s Clare Beecham and Michelle Pigdon enlisted bye team players from Red, Karyn Fraser and Carolyn Murray, for their trip to Euroa to take on Moglonemby.

Everyone combined superbly and Blue won every set.

Mansfield Blue six-48 def Moglonemby 0-20 The closest tussle of the day was between Euroa and Terip.

Both teams battled hard for supremacy.

Terip’s Frances Lawrence was sharp and provided the edge in her team’s four game win.

Terip took top spot on the ladder.

GOLF EUROA GOLF CLUB FINE weather and winter sunshine dried the course sufficiently to allow the committee to open the course to both walkers and karts for Saturday Golf.

The Wednesday Comp was cancelled again.

Sunshine greeted the golfers and the course had dried nicely for the 31 competition players.

The Ladies competed in the second round of the Watkins Trophy, a stroke event which was won clearly by Gail Allen with Net 73, nine shots clear of Deb Cox and Marion McMartin.

Gail found the greens to her liking with only 23 puts.

Dee McMartin collected both Drive & Pitch’s, while Freda Edwards and Lorraine Ellis took the Nearest the Pins.

David Mitchell won the Men’s par event with plus 2 from his 16 handicap.

Matt Mills finished square two shots in front of Cam Roper, Jim Garrard and Laurie McMartin tied up at two down.

Jim Garrard was on target collecting Nearest the Pins on 12 & 18.

Glenn McMartin and Matt Mills claimed the others. Glen also collected a modest two ball payout. Drive & Pitches went to Richard Eddy, Cam Roper, Dave McGregor and Glen McMartin.

Next Saturday is a stableford round and the August Monthly Medal the following weekend.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

By ROB BROWNLEE GOLF on Saturday, July 23 was played in clear but breezy conditions.

Captain John Moore handled the conditions better than all, winning with 33 points which had six wipes on the card, and needless to say it could have been better.

Line balls were won by M Tomson with 31 points, and Kristen Moore with 30 points on a countback from Neil Woolrich.

Nearest the pins: 4th was retained by the Club, 8th also was retained by the Club, 15th went to a visitor B Kerry, 17th was also won by the same visitor who mentioned he is coming back later in the year to play in the championship.

Straightest drive was won by Michelle Grady.

Being winter a lot of our member are either away in warmer pastures, having visitors, ill or the weather wasn’t concussive.

Next Saturday, July 30 stableford will be played with Kristen Moore officiating in a combined event which should be a lot of fun.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB THERE were seven junior golfers on Saturday morning and Bob Taylor-White saluted with a new personal best score.

Bob shot a three under nett breaking 40 shots over six holes and as a result he collected the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza and Gardens Voucher.

Well done Bob. Second place was decided by a countback with Conrad Brown just nudging out Lachlan O’Brien.

Great to see all the kids improving from week to week.

The afternoon saw the men play for the July Monthly Medal.

The weather remained clear and Matt Eddy prevailed with a solid 75 nett, one clear of Kevin Fiorini on a countback from Ron Harrison.

No NTP’s were collected and the birdie hole ball remained with the club as well.

A small field of ladies also competed for the July Medal which was in the form of a stableford round off the yellow tees.

Pam Pedder claimed the medal by virtue of a countback from Lyn Carracher, both ladies scoring 28 points - doesn’t sound very impressive, but the course is playing long, even off the short tees.

Pam and Lyn were ball winners and Lyn collected another ball for second shot to the 8th.

The Avenel Meats meat tray was won by non-other than Bill Harmieston, a great worker around the club.

This Saturday JCS Electrical Solutions (aka Jared Smith) is sponsoring a Pinehurst event with prizes for the best scratch and handicap scores.

You can arrange your own partner if you like (any combination - men, ladies or mixed), but if you want to be a daredevil and toss your hat into the ring, we will be doing a draw for partners as well. The event is gender inclusive and visitors are more than welcome to join us and the cost is $10 per player.

Regarding cleaning up under trees, if you are unable to move debris to the designated burn areas around the course, please leave piles far enough away from trees to enable room for the tractor to pick them up.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB WITH the pennant team away playing their final at Tocumwal it was a great opportunity for others to claim an easy win, and who better than Jeremy Ezard winning Sunday’s par event with +1, with the course still rather heavy it was a day for the shot makers with Ezard converting nine out of 10 up and downs from around the greens.

Runner up was the true battler Chris Roberts always there abouts with a -1 beating home Michael Roberts on count back also -1.

The nearest the pins went to Jeremy Ezard with a full blooded iron off the 3rd, Terry Wallis loading up on one to take home the long 8th and Michael Sloan peppering the 13th.

The Nagambie pennant team unfortunately went down in a close affair at Tocumwal against Hill Top Tatura the scores were level two a piece with the deciding match going extra distance but it was not to be Nagambie Lost three and two.

Well done to all that took part in this year’s winter pennant and we hope to go one better next year. Next week’s golf should be a big day with the return of the pennant players, a stableford event will be played with G. Bow on office duty and W. Le Cerf in the bar.

Twin towers prove valuable assets KDFNL FOOTBALL VIOLET TOWN PERFECT conditions welcomed the Towners at Longwood, it was a big day for the locals, Cam Mooney stripping for the home side in what turned out to be a huge crowd at Redleg stadium.

Longwood didn’t disappoint their faithful, getting off to a fast start kicking the first goal, with the two teams trading goals in an exciting first quarter - 14 goals in total but the Towners did hold sway by 26 points.

Thankfully for the visitors the twin towers then tore the game apart combining for 31 goals, Josh Mellington and Jack Exell were simply superb.

Exell kicked 17 while his close mate back from injury saluted 14 times before coming off early in the last.

Exell now sits on 91 goals for the season, Mellington on 78, dual 100’s beckons in what would have to be some sort of record if it is to be.

The side kick to these two goalkicking powerhouses is the third jewel in the crowd, Ryan Jennings kicked four himself but handed off a half dozen roaming around the half forward line.

Matt McCarty is so special, he seems to be harder than in past years, 44 possessions, 12 contested just salutes every week, his last month with Ollie Ford the raging bull has been exquisite, the raging bull (Ford) was as hard as ever.

Jett Bewick playing in front of Dad, Essendon premiership star Darren, didn’t disappoint the family with another 40 odd touches.

Super fit he seems to have found his niche whether wing or on ball.

Ryan Sutherland a late starter to the year just gets better and was clearly the most dominant big man on the ground, turned the game on its head in the second quarter when taking control in the ruck.

Pressure put on for Violet Town netballers

KDFNL NETBALL VIOLET TOWN A GRADE LONGWOOD started the better of the two sides and Violet Town had to work hard to match it, but were able to finish off the quarter with a slight lead on the scoreboard.

Some slight changes allowed for more movement in the attacking end allowed Violet Town to find their shooters a little easier with the defenders and mid court coming up with some good intercepts. After some changes at half time Violet Town were finally able to get on top and the defensive pressure continued to lift and the movement down court and in the attacking end was much better. The Towners settled and worked hard to push the margin out further.

B GRADE VIOLET TOWN wanted to go home with the win, but Longwood was not having any of that in the first half of the game.

It was tight all half, going goal for goal.

Violet Town put on good defensive pressure creating some turnovers, but Longwood also put the pressure on the Towners and was coming up with turnovers of their own.

It continued to be a tight contest throughout the third quarter with some slight positional changes made at three quarter time.

These changes helped Violet Town to lift for the last quarter and they were able to win the ball back and score.

Halfway through the last quarter the Towners were able to sink a few

goals in a row and create a five goal lead.

Longwood came back but Violet Town was able to hold onto their lead and win by five goals.

C GRADE VIOLET TOWN came out strong with the goalers working well together in the ring.

The Towners defensive pressure lifted as the quarter went on, which allowed Violet Town to come up with many turnovers and deflections.

In the second quarter Violet Town was working well with great transitions out of defence to the attacking end.

Everyone on court was working hard and backing each other up which resulted in a seven to two quarter, meaning VT were up by two goals at half time.

Longwood responded in the third quarter and Violet Town struggled to score, allowing Longwood back in the game.

Violet Town worked hard in the final quarter but unfortunately couldn’t execute the goals and were unable to come away with the win.

Was a great game with lots of great passages of play.

15 & UNDER THE Violet Town girls were out to start strong and play four consistent quarters.

It took the first few minutes though for Violet Town to hit their groove, but

once they did there was no turning back.

Violet Town continued to come up with several intercepts and were able to bring the ball down the court with some fantastic passages of play.

In the second quarter Longwood put the pressure on the Towners and were able to come back and reduce the margin.

In the third quarter VT lifted and continued to come up with any loose balls and intercepts which allowed the shooters to shoot many goals, increasing the margin out to six at third quarter time. In the final quarter Violet Town pushed on to finish the game off strongly getting them the win.

Final Score VT 27 def Longwood 21.

Encouragement awards went to Bronti Mustey, Elliette Jeffery and Matilda Kubeil.

13 & UNDER VIOLET TOWN proved how much they have improved with a great team performance.

Throughout the whole game Violet Town brought the ball down the court amazingly, with no crowning and everyone leading into the space.

All game, everyone was leading to the ball well with Violet Town getting themselves the most opportunities to score.

Defensively everyone put the pressure on Longwood all game which allowed the defenders to come up with several intercepts and lots of loose balls.

A super proud performance by all players.

Euroa netballers cement finals spot GVFNL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE THE game at home on Saturday was very important to the Euroa team.

With some top of the ladder clashes scheduled for the weeks ahead, the Magpies needed a win to cement a spot for the finals.

With a slightly different line up, the girls made a good start.

Sophie Owen immediately made her presence as centre felt with a great intercept in the defensive third.

Despite a very physical game there was some nice movement through the attack third. Bridget Hill also contributing to the four goal lead with several intercepts in GK. In the second quarter, defenders Tylah Marchbank and Bridget Hill were teaming well and forcing errors by the Swans.

Karly Wappett and Bree Poole were moving well in the ring and movement of the ball around to Sophie and Eliza Hoare saw Euroa create a strong 13 goal lead at the end of the quarter.

At the start of the third quarter, Euroa came out where they had left off, increasing their lead with some beautiful passages of play.

But the Swans were not going to let them have it all their own way and the relentless pressure they were applying saw Euroa start to show cracks.

The Swans quickly capitalised on any mistakes, bringing the margin back to just a seven goal difference at the end of the third quarter.

The Swans were definitely keen to keep their finals hopes alive and came out hard in the last quarter giving it everything, but Bree Poole and Karly Wappett kept their composure, moving the ball close to the post to give them the optimum shooting position.

Euroa fought off the momentum the Swans were working hard to create, cementing their spot in the finals with a five goal win.

B GRADE THE Euroa B grade team had an exciting win over the Shepparton Swans on Saturday, getting over the line by two goals.

In a physical and mental battle, Euroa were able to

settle themselves enough to pull off an eight goal turnaround from the midst of the game.

The last half for Euroa was imperative as they pulled their way back from eight goals down. Sienna Trotter stepped up for a full game in goals and was crucial for Euroa, whilst Molly Redfern, at wing attack, fed the goalers incredibly well in her first B grade game for the season. Caitlyn Elliot made it extremely hard for the Swan’s attack to get the ball past the transverse line and into their goaling third.

All girls contributed strongly to help Euroa secure a great win.

Euroa 42. Shepp Swans 40 Best players awarded by the Coach: Sienna Trotter, Molly Redfern, Caitlyn Elliott UNDER 17 THE first quarter at Memorial Oval on Saturday saw the Magpies on point.

They were ‘on fleek’.

They were totally focussed and competitive, and the first 15 minutes of play was exciting to watch. Molly Redfern and Sienna Trotter played strong games at goals shooter and goal attack respectively, drawing a stream

of directive filled instructions for the Swans defenders from their coach on how to control the dynamic duo’s impact.

Meg Walker came into goals later on and moved around the goal ring with purpose, creating space and providing options.

The first quarter was possibly one of the best for the season, and it looked like an upset was brewing.

The Euroa team were trailing by three goals, and they had the Swans rattled.

But, unfortunately, the rattling stopped completely in the second and third quarters as the Swans steadied and piled on the goals to claim an unassailable lead.

Abby Harrison, Lily Meehan and Hannah Kubeil worked tirelessly in the mid court, putting their bodies on the line in an effort to stem the free-flowing movement of the Swans.

Laura Frewen and Millie Watson played a number of different positions throughout the game, both versatile players who can be moved around the court and always give their best.

And both may have bruises this week as testament to their efforts on Saturday.

turn to the Magpie standard of play in the first, but it was far too late.

A convincing win to the Swans, and another tantalising glimpse of what could be if the Euroa team could manage to put together four solid quarters of netball.

The Magpies were faced with a tall, well-oiled Swans team, and the game began at a fast pace with Euroa having many great intercepts.

Maggie Pittock working particularly hard at WD from the very first whistle.

The scores were tied at five all at one stage with the defenders working tirelessly, but Swans made it to a eight to 15 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Tash Reid and Issy Smith were working the Magpie goals together, which resulted in the Magpie’s highest scoring quarter for the game. Scarlett Trotter gave it her all before coming off

Mixed results for junior netballers EJFNC JUNIOR NETBALL UNDER 15 EUROA turned on blue skies for the encounter with Broadford at Memorial Oval on Sunday.

But that’s about where the good news ended for the homeside.

The Kangaroos were far too strong across the court and left the Magpies looking flat-footed for much of the match.

Strong contributions by Maggie Pittock at goal defence and Ella Hill at Goal Attack kept the Magpies within striking distance for the first half.

But the score-line blew out in the second half with the visitors winning by 29 goals.

UNDER 13 A STRONG start by the Magpies had the home-side trailing ladder leaders Broadford by only three goals at half time of Sunday’s match.

But an inconsistent third quarter by Euroa saw Broadford’s lead blow out to seven goals at three quarter time.

In the end the Magpies went down by eight goals with the final score Euroa 14 to Broadford 22.

UNDER 11 AFTER a cold and wet start to the morning the under 11s took on Broadford under sunny conditions at home.

For what was a low scoring but greatly contested game, the Euroa girls were keen to put a win on the board.

The girls had everyone on the edge of their seats in the final quarter delivering an outstanding team effort.

This week we play Alexandra at home for the second last game of the season and welcome everyone to come down and support the teams.

In the second quarter, Euroa really gave the Swans a run for their money with Ruby Watson in C working hard all over the court and Irish Anderson coming into WD. Tess Walker and Lilly Fowler defended fiercely in the goals, yet despite this Shepparton had a 13/31 lead at half time.

Two more injuries this quarter saw Ruby and Tess come off the court.

At the start of the third quarter, Ella Hill came on as GS which gave the girls a bit more height in the ring.

The whole team pulled together, putting pressure on the Swan’s attack, with Oakley Paul trying very hard at GK. By three quarter time the bench was empty and the trainers were busy with ice the packs.

This was always going to be a tough match but the whole team played with a ‘never say die’ attitude and will improve from the experience.

Magpies set for Shepp comp success SNA SATURDAY NETBALL UNDER 11 THE Magpies took on the Tatura Pups for the first time of the season.

Isla Hahnel started off getting her hands on several interceptions and generating several attacks while Lara Saxon and Bethan Burton controlled the mid court.

Magpies were four-one at the end of the first.

In the second quarter Maisy Wilson was providing great energy in the midcourt with confident leads and excellent passing into the shooters.

Ellie Robinson put in several goals and was dominating the rebounding.

At half time the Magpies were seven-one.

Lara Saxon moved to goal shooter in the third quarter and was in red hot form.

Bethan Burton, Grace Eddy and Willow Timperley were combining well to feed the ball into the goal ring.

The Magpies dominated this quarter piling on nine goals for the quarter, finishing the third 16-four.

The final quarter was a much tighter contest, the Tatura team fought back but the Magpies steadied to secure the win.

Grace Hill and Maisy Wilson worked well in defence to gain many rebounds and intercepts in this quarter.

The Magpies finished winning 19-seven.

Magpies poised in second on ladder GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS IN a return to football after a split-round bye Coach Rowan and his players were keen to shake off any cobwebs early in the game.

This meant for a ferocious start with both teams not willing to give an inch.

Plenty of ball handling errors were being made, some quite uncharacteristic for this level of football.

That said, the Euroa team settled well to score five goals to Swans three goals in the opening quarter.

The second quarter left off right from the end of the first with the likes of Jack Hellier leading the way in the midfield, giving forwards good use of the ball.

The multi-pronged attack that has been seen right throughout the 2022 season kicked into gear as a returning Erish Uthayakumar slotted three goals for the afternoon alongside his other key ‘deep forward’ Tristan Davies.

Ben Giobbi chimed in for a couple of his own as the Magpies asserted their dominance in the clash.

Ten goals to five at half-time was a solid return.

The second half played out very much like the first with the Swans playing well in bursts only to be undone by some class from the Magpies.

JD Hayes played his first senior match for the season in a very welcome return.

Jett Trotter again underlined his class/X-factor as he booted a bagful of goals with some sublime shots on the run a highlight indeed.

The team heads to Deakin Reserve this weekend for their clash with Shepparton United - with four games to go the Magpies are in second place on the ladder and looking to build momentum heading into finals.

Some Euroa players even donned Shepparton Swans jumpers in a wonderful display of country football spirit and determination to ‘get a game’ under their belts.

KEY COMPONENT: Erish Uthayakumar kicked three of the best on the weekend to carry Euroa to victory over Shepparton Swans.

With half the side getting themselves onto the scoreboard it meant for an opportunity to try to refine the way the team played together as they looked towards the remaining four games prior to finals.

There were a few players missing from this team as well as a couple more to come back into the senior mix so things are tight for places in both teams - a good challenge to have yet a challenge nonetheless.

However, the Magpies still found themselves undermanned with key personnel missing through illness and injury. Although true to their hearts the thirds did not shy away from the challenge that awaited them against a legitimate premiership contender in the Swans.

The Swans opened affairs with three quickfire goals, asserting their high-pressure

style of football instantly onto the magpies. Evidently Heath Downie and Keily Jager sensed this and imposed themselves on the contest providing a much-needed lift, resulting in a goal from speedster Darby Wilson.

Nic Hill led like a warrior down back, going backwards with the flight of the ball on several occasions with no regard for his safety clunking multiple intercept grabs, setting a competitive tone for the home side that lasted all day.

As the game progressed neither side was prepared to give an inch, but the common trend of day continued with every Euroa goal resulting in a reply of three from the away team.

Nathan Robinson competed hard down back all day whilst Charlie Watson and Will Creevey kept their Swan counterparts accountable.

Ultimately, a touch of class is what separated the two sides on the morning but to the naked eye it was a hardfought contest with no easy balls to be won, Shepparton just proving to hit the scoreboard regularly.

The pies were up for the challenge and applied pressure to get it down to our forward line.

Euroa responded well with accurate kicking resulting in goals.

The Swans struck early in the third quarter with a goal.

A couple of strong marks across half back from Cohen who then streamed forward taking what can only be described as the mark of the year resulting in a goal.

After a number of tough contests and a goal after the siren Pies led into the break.

Euroa junior footballers show Broadford the door EJFNL FOOTBALL JUNIORS First Quarter EUROA were strong from the very first bounce with Aaron Van den Berghe in the ruck.

They moved the ball forward and locked it in their forward fifty for the majority of the quarter.

Ethan Saxon snapped to kick the first goal of the game.

Koby Ross and Sam Holden also kicking some lovely goals.

Great team play saw Euroa kick to a sizeable lead 8-3-51 to Broadford 0.

Second Quarter Broadford came out strong in the second quarter in the hopes to slow the flow of goals from Euroa. However the Euroa team lifted to continue ticking the scoreboard over.

Some very good linking play from the backline from Will Dunn down to Ollie Wilson and Ethan Saxon saw Euroa regain control to kick away to a sizeable lead at half time.

Third Quarter The great team play continued throughout the third quarter, resulting in four more goals to be added to the tally.

Any time the ball hit the backline it was propelled forward again.

Providing many opportunities for the forwards to score.

The Murphy brothers, Leo and Patrick worked tirelessly to gain possession throughout the quarter. By the end of the quarter Euroa had extended their lead 15-9-99 to Broadford 0.

Fourth Quarter Euroa’s team play was evident again in the final quarter with players sharing the ball around getting all players into the game.

Ollie Swain was providing some good work in the midfield to hit up the forwards.

Shayna Buckle scored a lovely goal late in the game.

The most pleasing part of today’s game was Euroa’s team play.

Euroa had this in bucket loads today.

They were always looking for a team mate in a better position and sharing the ball around in front of goals.

The final score Euroa 19-12126 to Broadford 0-0-0.

UNDER 15 THE under 15s went into the game against VT strong willed to back up its win last week.

The girls fought strong all game but unfortunately too many basic errors allowed VT to come away with a six-goal win.

We continue to take the court with many under 13s players which we are grateful for them stepping up to get us on the court.

BOC: Beth Pellegrino, she had finger tips on every ball and created so many turn overs in our defensive end.

Coaches award: Bella Trait, our star GA, who knew she could defend too?

It was an absolute stand out last quarter when I gave her the job of GK. Encouragement award donated by Stephen: Allira Nichols, an under 13s player who I moved from defence, to mid court to attacking and she

applied 110 per cent in every position.

UNDER 13 THIS week the under 13s took the court and showed us all what they have learnt this season.

They all worked together as one this week and were able to come home with a very well earned draw.

We as coaches are super proud of these girls.

When we faced Violet Town at the start of the season we lost 0-12 so to come out and play them again and draw is something special for these young girls.

BOC: Marlee Galvin, what an amazing game from our little pocket rocket, she wanted to try a new position this week so we put her into GA and boy did she play one of her best games yet and scored her first goal.

Coaches: Jayda Webber, all her practice and persistence came together for this game and shot two out of the three goals of the game, also one of her best games played. Well done to each and every one of these girls, the coaches are so proud.

Mooney headlines Redlegs’ line-up KDFNL FOOTBALL LONGWOOD SENIORS IT was Carlton Draft Day at Redlegs stadium, and what a start to the game it was.

The boys were up and about with inclusion of pick number three, Cameron Mooney.

The atmosphere was thick with anticipation and excitement at the opportunity for the boys to play alongside a legend of the game.

The boys managed to get eight goals on the board before the siren, making it our most productive first half of the season.

It was clear that excitement was fuelling the team, with lots of positives to take out of the first half of the game.

Unfortunately, the tides changed on the other side of the siren, and we had not much to cheer for after half time, but the lads never dropped their heads and pushed out the game.

It was great to see Ryan Cumberland and Brandon Weatherson kick three and Cam Mooney snagging two of the best of the day.

Better players for the Redlegs were Nathan Watson, Bailey McMurtrie and Ryan Cumberland.

Overall, it was fantastic to have Cam for the day although the scores may not have shown success, the banding together and comradery of the club that went into making the day happen was simply outstanding.

RESERVES THE Leggers ressies

had a tough match up this week against Violet town in what would be the curtain raiser to one of the biggest days in the club’s recent history, this week welcomed back captain Webber, who did a great job down back.

Brad Dowell, Dave Richardson and Harry Skinner were strong contributors for us all day, as Violet town proved too strong.

We look forward to the bye and taking on Undera in two weeks’ time.

UNDER 18 THE under 18s had a red hot crack with only 14 players and kept Lancaster’s score down compared to last time we played.

We wasted a few opportunities to kick a goal.

But the tackling pressure was outstanding they never gave up.

Our better players were Dakota Pellegrino, Harry Skinner, Harry Shiner.

UNDER 13 THE fourths started in blistering fashion and piled on the goals with lots of celebrations. This coach/umpire in his infinite wisdom evened up the contest only to watch Violet Town run away with the game much to the dismay of his troops.

Lots of tackle pressure and runs with the ball were highlights.

BOG went to Cooper G, second Kurt Shiner and third was Harry Bennet.

CAM MOONEY MAKES REDLEGS DEBUT: It was the day all had been waiting for, the Carlton Draft Day and Cam Mooney made his debut on field as a Longwood Redleg.

A FANTASTIC EFFORT: The day was a great success thanks to all volunteers and organisers.

KDFNL NETBALL LONGWOOD A GRADE THE ladies came out of the gates running this week.

The first and second quarter showed a goal for goal nail-biting event, and it was literally anyone’s game.

Unfortunately the third quarter saw VT find their rhythm, creating a lead that could not be diminished by the tireless efforts of our Redlegs side, with our key defender absent this week.

While we couldn’t take a win this week, our improved performance continues, inspiring us to aim higher each week.

Best on to our captain Toni Watson for stepping in to GD

and creating multiple possession overturns, coaches to goaler Bree Moloney for her relentless attack of the ball.

B GRADE THIS week we welcomed back captain Emily Jenkinson after weeks off due to injury and what a return it was.

B grade started the game with great intensity and a determination that never wavered for the four quarters.

A big first quarter saw the Redlegs up by a goal at the break.

Goal for goal all game, the girls were hungry for the ball and looking for a turnaround from the last VT match up.

In the final quarter VT were able to break out to a five goal

lead, but strong defensive pressure and rebounding combined with a lift in shooting accuracy enabled the Redlegs to claw that back.

A couple of errors allowed VT to pull away once again and the Redlegs went down by four goals in the end.

A huge effort by the team, and a great improvement on the last time we faced off with VT in round one.

BOC: Emily Jenkinson Coaches Award: Maddi Milne C GRADE THE C grade team went out very positive with some very good set plays and some great moving.

Longwood set out with the lead, but Violet Town was not

giving in, they fought back hard and it was a very competitive game.

But Longwood didn’t give up either with lots of changes happening, bringing on fresh legs.

The Redlegs took the lead again, never gave up the whole game and came away with the win.

It was a great team effort by all 19-14 win Longwood’s way.

BOC went to Kate Stuchbery, who gave 110 per cent getting hands to the ball and making good leads.

Coaches went to Regina Davies, who got lots of intercepts and rebounds and didn’t give up.
