$360k project fund STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has released their draft budget for 2022/23 with 12 community proposals from the Pitch my Project initiative receiving funding.

Now in its second year, the Pitch my Project initiative ensures council is funding the projects and works that matter to its community, according to Mayor Cr Laura Binks.

“We’re now calling on the community to have its say on the 2022/23 Draft Budget,” Cr Binks said.

“This is a significant document for our community as

“We’re excited this year’s draft budget includes funding for about $360,000 of projects through our Pitch my Project initiative.

“You may remember we launched our Pitch my Project program early this year to ensure meaningful communi-

ty input into the development of our draft budget.”

This year’s draft budget allocates operating expenditure of $31.91 million for services in the shire.

This includes $7.174 million to roads, drains, bridges, and footpaths, $402,500 to sustainability initiatives, $1.241 million to parks and reserves and $2.342 million to planning.

Operating expenditure is also used to fund important services such as libraries,

maternal and child health, swimming pools and arts and culture.

The draft budget also provides a $15 million capital works program, together with $9.8 million carried forward from the 2021/22 budget.

This will see $7.45 million go towards roads, $1.2 million for bridges and culverts, $1.31 million for pedestrian bridges and footpaths, $2.807 million for recreation, leisure and community facilities and $2.145 million for parks, open

spaces and streetscapes.

The capital works program includes projects such as the completion of the Nagambie Foreshore Walk, rehabilitation of the Violet Town Landfill, sealing of Habel Road in Nagambie, aquatic facility upgrades, information technology improvements, options development for the future of Kirwans Bridge, streetscape improvements and an upgrade to Strathbogie Recreation Reserve pavilion.

HUNDREDS of Euroa residents have gathered together to pay tribute to our service men and women and commemorate those who lost their lives in war.

Proceedings begun with a dawn service at the Euroa RSL at VC Park on Kirkland Avenue, which was well-attended despite darkness and cold weather.

Those who spoke paid their respects to those who died while serving and acknowledged those who still live with the pain caused by war.

“Today we gather to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend our nation, it is a day to learn about the bravery and sacrifice that our service men and women have made,” she said.

Those in attendance recited prayers and laid wreaths at the gardens while the flags of

Australia and New Zealand were raised.

There was a rendition of the Last Post played on an original First World War era bugle as well as national anthems for both Australia and New Zealand.

For those who were unable to attend the dawn service, another ceremony was held at the VC park at 10am.

This service begun following a march from Binney Street to the memorial park, where residents with a military history and their families proudly led the way as locals clapped on the footpaths.

Following the march, the ceremony was carried out on the lawns of the Euroa RSL. A catafalque party led the march off following the ceremony, with concluding remarks being made by RSL president, Phil Munt, who thanked everyone for attending.

There was an acknowledgement of the large crowds at the services, as many residents proved eager to pay tribute following two years of COVID that prevented past ceremonies.

“We have worked to minimise rate increases and have prepared the budget based on a 1.75 per cent increase in the average rate per property, which is in line with the State Government’s ‘Fair Go Rates’ legislation.”

Cr Binks reminded residents that rate outcomes for individual properties would vary, depending on how that property’s valuation has changed when compared to the average increase.

Waste collection and disposal charges will rise by three per cent, with costs impacted by increases in both the State Government landfill levy of 19 per cent and increases in fuel prices which are a major input into council’s waste collection contracts.

Council is now seeking feedback on the 2022/23 Draft Budget and encourages the community to make a submission.

By JEFF ZEUSCHNER INDI electorate voters have 10 candidates vying for their support in this federal election.

Australian Electoral Commission Indi returning officer, Jenny Essex, confirmed the 10 candidates and conducted the official ballot draw, attended by six of the contenders and around 70 interested onlookers, at St Patrick’s Hall in Wangaratta at noon on Friday.

Animal Justice Party candidate Angel Aleksov of Princess Hills is at the top of the ballot card, followed by: Independent incumbent Helen Haines, Lachlan O’Connell (Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party), Stephen Williams (United Australia Party), Beth Stevens (One Nation), Benjamin Gilbert (Greens), Liz Fisher (Nationals), Nadia David (Labor), Julian Fidge (Liberal Democrats) and Ross Lyman (Liberals).

Not since 2013, when 11 candidates contested the seat - which Independent Cathy McGowan won from Liberal incumbent Sophie Mirabella - has the electorate being offered such a diverse range of choice.

Ms Essex said 67 voting stations will be opened across the Indi electorate on polling day, but those wanting to vote before Saturday, May 21 will have access to pre-polling centres in Wangaratta (St Pat’s Hall), Wo-

donga, Benalla, Mansfield and Bright from Monday, May 9.

Speaking at the draw, Dr Haines said the past two weeks of campaigning had only sought to solidify the issues that she said have been front and centre over the past three years of her term.

“People really care a lot about honesty and decency, and they’re also raising their concerns about the rising costs of living, housing stress, aged care, health care and climate change, and a workforce shortage,” she said.

“They’re all important issues for Indi.”

Liberals’ Ross Lyman, who was unable to attend the draw due to a health forum engagement in Wodonga - where the Victorian Government announced $300m for a new Albury Wodonga Hospital - said he too was hearing key themes across the North East.

He said more investment in road, rail, renewable energy, health, education and communications; supporting manufacturing businesses and the agriculture sector to create more employment; and strengthen the trade and tourism sectors to grow the local economy were all part of his “practical, local plan for a stronger future” for Indi.

Labor’s Nadia David, surrounded by supporters at the draw, echoed similar senti-

ments, and said throughout her door knocking on the hustings over recent months people were “genuinely excited to see someone (herself) who could potentially be in government”.

“Indi has a very good local member who works hard but gets nothing,” she said, believing support for Labor was building and doubling its primary vote (12.09 per cent in 2019) in Indi was certainly achievable.

Greens candidate Benjamin Gilbert said his campaign would focus on climate change, affordable housing, childcare and increasing taxes on large corporations.

He said he was seeing good support for the Greens and “we literally don’t have enough corflutes for all the people that want them”.

Liberal Democrats’ candidate Dr Julian Fidge said his party’s stance around personal freedoms, specifically no vaccine mandate, was one of the many sensible policies that was resonating with many in the electorate.

“Unlike the Liberal-Nationals Coalition, we don’t believe market forces should run everything, and we’re not socialist like Labor,” he said.

dents are particularly concerned with the state of the regional health system.

“A lot of people do discuss the health situation at the moment, like the Albury Wodonga hospital going into code yellow, the ambulance situation, that’s a concern for everybody,” she said.

United Australia Party candidate Stephen Williams said his first foray into federal politics had been prompted by “the madness of the last two years, and the loss of freedom and rights”.

The father of six, who has run a successful lawn mowing business in Tawonga since 2011, said he was “running to get elected” and believed his party and its policies were the “best choice for regional Australia”.

Nationals’ candidate Liz Fisher said people, businesses and councils she was meeting with across the electorate she has lived in for two decades, said better roads and infrastructure, mobile reception and communications, with health services, were key concerns.

“I know it’s difficult to get an appointment with your GP, sometimes three weeks wait... attracting and retaining GPs, increasing bulk billing services, and keeping telehealth permanent and universal are critical to strengthen health care in Indi,” she said.

COMMUNITY FEEDBACK REQUESTED: The Strathbogie Shire Council’s draft asset plan requires community feedback.

Give your input on asset management COMMUNITY feedback is being requested for the Strathbogie Shire Council’s draft asset plan that will outline how assets are managed in the municipality.

This includes maintenance, renewal, acquisition, expansion, and decommissioning of assets in the shire.

Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks, said the assets managed by council on behalf of the community hold a value of more than $283 million.

“This includes 2204km of roads (735km sealed and 1469km unsealed), 125 road bridges, eight foot bridges, 387 buildings and structures, 37km of footpaths, 11 parks and reserves, four aquatic centres, 26 playgrounds and 42 hard courts and bowling greens,” Cr Binks said.

Mayor Binks said these assets were used by the community or by council to pro-

vide services to those in the region.

“Over the next 10 years we expect to budget a total of $71.40 million for renewing, improving, and growing our assets,” she said.

“We are also projected to allocate about $93.20 million over the same period to operate and maintain our assets.

“Combined, on average 42 per cent of our total annual expenditure is asset related.

“This investment is made so that our assets remain fitfor-purpose, are safe, and support the delivery of services to our community.

“It is vital that we are responsible asset managers, so our assets continue to support community outcomes.”

Council states that asset management helps effectively plan the maintenance, upgrade and renewal of as-

sets as timely investments and will save money in the long term.

Under the Victorian Local Government Act 2020, council must produce and maintain a 10-year asset plan.

Police investigate removal of political signs in Euroa TWO United Australia Party signs have allegedly been stolen from Murphy’s Motors on Tarcombe Street in Euroa.

The incident is said to have occurred in the late afternoon of Saturday, April 16.

The bright yellow signs advertising for the political party were placed at the business by local residents Mark Tame and Robin Weatherald.

Mr Tame spoke of his disappointment at the signs being removed.

“It’s just not acceptable,” he said.

“The person who took them down should be asked to put them back up.

“We don’t know who did it or why they did it.”

With the election coming up shortly, the men have indicated that it

was frustrating to see the signs removed.

“Elections are about free and tolerable expressions of community opinion,” Mr Weatherald said.

“Just because you don’t agree with a candidate doesn’t mean you can remove their signs.”

The incident was reportedly captured on camera, with police being provided with the footage and information about the signs.

“We’ve raised this with the police and we believe it may be a crime against the electoral act,” Mr Tame said.

Minister and Liberal candidate visit Euroa to hold forum

By GUS RIDDER MINISTER for communications, urban Infrastructure, cities and the arts, Paul Fletcher, visited Euroa to talk about NBN, mobile blackspots, and fixed wireless internet in the region.

The minister was joined

by Liberal candidate for Indi, Ross Lyman, at the Euroa Hotel on Wednesday, April 20 to speak to interested members of the community.

Community members including Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks raised questions about the poor standard of internet and mobile com-

munications in the region and what the government had planned to alleviate these issues.

“We’ve done some work, there are 51 towers that have been established but there’s still a lot of work to be done,” Mr Lyman said.

“There has been some funding announced in the federal budget for communications and NBN in particular.”

Mr Fletcher discussed the importance of a strong communications network and how it can promote businesses in the region.

“Communications are helping overcome the tyranny of distance and remote-

“Our biggest frustration is that we’re not getting reception in areas that we should,” he said.

“It’s just patchy coverage and it would be nice if communications was considered an essential service.”

Mr Fletcher acknowledged that improving the broadband services in the region were a high priority.

“Broadband can attract businesses to regional towns and keep existing businesses in these towns,” he said.

“We’ve made funding commitments of $1.3 billion in the budget, the money is there.”

Labor wants anti-corruption commission LABOR’S candidate for Indi, Nadia David, has said an Albanese Government will create a transparent and independent National Anti-Corruption Commission by the end of 2022.

Labor Leader Anthony Albanese has previously confirmed that a National Anti-Corruption Commission would be one of the first priorities if he was elected.

“A National Anti-Corruption Commission is a key issue for Australians, particularly in Indi,” Ms David said.

“Without a National AntiCorruption Commission,

we will just see more rorts and serious and systemic corruption.

“I stand with Helen Haines on this issue, but only an Albanese Labor Government will establish a National Anti-Corruption Commission.”

Ms David, a former NSW Police Prosecutor, said Labor’s National Anti-Corruption Commission would be like a standing Royal Commission with jurisdiction to investigate Ministers and public servants with complete independence from government.

The commission would have the power to hold a public hearing if they determine it is in the public interest to do so and to refer findings of criminal, corrupt conduct to the relevant director of public prosecutions for action.

“This is a strong anticorruption body that will be properly funded and will frankly have a big job on its hands after years of the Morrison Government operating as though it is above the law,” Ms David said.

Tree in memory of Euroa family’s military history

By GUS RIDDER A TREE has been planted outside the Granite Hill Aged Care Facility in time for Anzac Day to commemorate a Euroa family’s military history.

The tree has sprouted from an acorn gathered from a tree on the Avenue of Honour.

The acorn was gathered by Robyn Neville, who has grown trees previously from fallen acorns.

“The acorns come from one of the large trees on the Avenue of Honour, including the one dedicated to the unknown soldier,” she said.

“This is something that I thought would be great to share with the Bruns family.”

Youngsters Albert and Harvey Bruns were in charge of arranging the garden for the new tree.

Albert and Harvey were helpful arranging a rock formation to surround the tree and helped gardeners at Granite Hill with the work.

The garden and tree will celebrate the service shown by their family, including their grandfather (Juri), father (Daini) and mother (Jess).

Juri Bruns said this was a

perfect time for the planting.

“With it being so close to Anzac Day, it couldn’t have been a better time and reason to plant the tree with the kids,” he said.

“Many members of our family had been involved in the Navy and this is an important thing for our family.”

Juri and his wife Edite were both extremely proud of the work their grandchildren did during the tree planting.

Metal art open day in Longwood a success

By GUS RIDDER SEVERAL guests turned up to Longwood on Sunday to view the metal sculptures of local artists, Steve Tobin and Tank.

The main event of the day was the public unveiling of the six-metre tall wedge-tailed eagle before it is moved to its new home at Ulupna Island Station.

Other structures that stood out was a large white birdcage, fitted with a swing inside for people to sit on.

The blue wren that made its home in Euroa was also on display, much to the delight of visitors from the town it once called home.

Those who attended were treated to a sausage sizzle and drinks outside on the grounds of the property.

When asked about the day, Steve Tobin was very pleased.

“We were stoked with the turnout,” he said.

“Thanks to everyone for all the support.”

Protection for Strathbogie Ranges

By GUS RIDDER FOREST assessments for the Strathbogie Ranges Immediate Protection Areas have been released by the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC).

These assessments discuss the values of state forest in the Immediate Protection Areas (IPAs) of the Strathbogie Ranges.

The Strathbogie Ranges IPA is made up of the entire Strathbogie State Forest located about 120km north east of Melbourne, east of the Hume Highway at Euroa.

Several small townships are nearby including Strathbogie and Violet Town.

The assessment was requested by the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio.

The findings will inform the work of an Eminent Panel for Community Engagement (EPCE) which has been

established to consult the community on future uses of State forests in Victoria.

The panel will then make recommendations to the Minister on future uses of the IPAs and State forests in Victoria.

VEAC’s full report will be submitted to the Minister by May 31 and will include an assessment of the economic implications of the EPCE’s proposed land use changes.

The report for the Strathbogie Ranges IPA identifies values specific to the area, threats to the values and typical land use categories commensurate with the identified values.

Some of the immediate threats to the area listed in the report include climate change, invasive plants and animals, wildfires and planned burning and increased human use pressures.

An assessment of values from each of the Traditional

Owner groups is included in VEAC’s reports.

Information for the initial assessments was sourced from government and external publicly available datasets, published reports, scientists, land managers, resource managers, and information and reports from community groups and forest users where available.

VEAC is not undertaking community consultation or receiving submissions on this assessment.

AFTER being unable to secure an Abrams A1M1 Main Battle Tank due to logistical reasons, the Euroa Show and Shine will now display a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle.

The Bushmaster has been in been in the headlines lately, with Defence Minister Peter Dutton sending 20 of the $2.75m fighting vehicles to assist Ukraine.

It came as a great surprise when Australian National Show and Shine committee member Tony Clota announced that following representations to Mr Dutton, and subsequent negotiations with the commander in charge of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) joint operations support staff, he had secured a Bushmaster for display at the Euroa Show and Shine on Sunday, October 2.

Mr Clota had previously been hopeful of securing an Abrams A1M1 Main Battle Tank for the show, but this had not been possible due to some logistical problems in getting the tank to Euroa.

It turned out that with the Abrams weighing in at 62 tonnes, and with another 18.6 tonnes for its transporter, the ADF was not sure whether some bridges in the area would hold the combined 80+ tonnes.

ARMOURED VEHICLE SECURED FOR SHOW: The Euroa Show and Shine has confirmed that the Bushmaster will be on display at their show this year.

It was decided that the tank, transporter and most of Burton’s Bridge falling into the Seven Creeks would not have been appreciated, so the Bushmaster was secured as a worthy replacement attraction.

A leading armoured vehicle manufactured in Bendigo, a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle is an personnel carrier designed to carry and rapidly deploy up to 10 battle-ready soldiers.

The four-wheel-drive vehicles are designed for all environments and are blast-resistant, complete with flat-run tyres and a built-in self-inflation system.

Southern Aurora celebrates anniversary with Violet Town stop

By GUS RIDDER THE iconic Southern Aurora train stopped through Violet Town to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Standard Gauge and the train’s maiden journey.

The train, organised as part of a tour by St James Rail, passed Violet Town on Sunday, April 24.

Interested members of the community met at the Southern Aurora Memorial Garden in Violet Town including Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks.

There were also several visitors from across the state, including Melbourne, Geelong and Bendigo.

At 11am the Standard Gauge extension of the memorial garden was opened, with the history of the railway and the tools used to build it being discussed by knowledgeable locals.

Despite the train running a bit late, visitors were invited to go to the track and platforms to watch the 60th anniversary tour train pass and stop at the Violet

The striking blue and yellow front of the train was well appreciated by the attendees, with many bystanders commenting on the beauty of the train.

Bruce Cumming and Charlie Mead were among the attendees who embarked on the train to enjoy a leg of the anniversary tour.

Mr Mead, who worked for over 30 years on the railways and is a popular figure amongst those in the industry, was thrilled to be

a part of the anniversary.

“I’m very excited to get on the train,” he said.

“I worked for a long time on the railways and I’m looking forward to joining Bruce and the others for the trip down to Melbourne.”

Bruce Cumming spoke at the Memorial Garden prior to the train’s arrival.

“It’s an open-air museum open to anyone 24 hours a day,” he said.

“We’re bang on the 60th anniversary.

“Enjoy yourself and stay safe.”

The Southern Aurora travelled on its way to Melbourne after Violet Town after first leaving from Sydney.

Euroa hosting support and advice event for farmers THE National Recovery and Resilience Agency will provide support and advice for farmers and residents of Euroa when they bring a ‘one stop shop’ to the township early next month.

The Euroa event on Monday, May 2 is one of a series of community outreach events taking place across the region.

Lana Young, one of the agency’s locally based recovery support officers will be on hand to provide information and assistance.

“It is an excellent opportunity for farmers, families and communities to grab a sausage sandwich, catch up with friends and neighbours and find out what support is available,” she said.

The events aim to bring together all levels of govern-

ment, charities, not-for-profit and agricultural organisations to support farmers and rural and regional communities.

“Word of mouth really helps us to promote these events, and we encourage you to reach out to your network,” Ms Young said.

“Being able to connect with different services may make all the difference to you, a neighbour, family member or a friend now and in the future.

“I’m looking forward to this event and can’t wait to meet you.”

Representatives from the Rural Financial Counselling Service, Intereach and Rural Aid will be among the organisations attending to provide information on support that’s available.

A RECENTLY concluded feasibility study looking into the introduction of resale shops at Council’s Resource Recovery Centre’s (RRC) recommends the initial establishment of one shop at the Nagambie RRC. The study began in mid2021 after Strathbogie Shire Council received a $10,000 grant from Sustainability Victoria.

JustWaste Consulting was appointed by council to conduct the study, with the final report recently being received.

Several recommendations were suggested from the study.

This included the introduction of one resale shop due to favourable social, economic and environmental conditions in the region.

It also suggested that the shop’s most fit-for-purpose management model would be council-managed and staffed with a transfer station operator on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays and an additional member hired for Saturday and Sunday operations.

An operational surplus of

about $20,904 is anticipated to be generated from the savings through waste diversion and shop takings.

Mayor Laura Binks said the Nagambie Resource Recovery Centre was selected as the most appropriate venue.

“Based on community feedback, accessibility, site infrastructure, material input and operational costs, Nagambie is recommended as the site to introduce council’s first Resale Shop,” Cr Binks said.

“There is an expected cost of around $105,000 to upgrade the site with appropriate infrastructure, which means council will be required to seek funding to establish the Resale Shop.

“There is the potential to help fund the required infrastructure from the second round of the same grant program in which we received the original feasibility grant funding from Recycling Victoria Councils Fund.”

“The community had the chance to provide its feedback last year for the study which was included and considered in the final reports and recommendations,” Cr Binks said.

“We saw there was lots of passion to introduce a resale shop, furthering council’s goal to sustainably manage its natural and built environment, through further diversion of waste from landfill.”

Cr Binks highlighted other potential benefits of the shop being established.

“Excitingly, any potential operational surplus will allow council to kickstart a new Sustainability Fund, where community groups in our shire may be able to apply and fund new green initiatives,” she said.

Councillors endorsed the report at the monthly council meeting on Tuesday, April 20.

This project is supported by the Recycling Victoria Councils Fund and is delivered by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Victorian Government.

Paintings by Euroa artist on display at library

By GUS RIDDER EUROA painter, Margaret Sibley, currently has 24 paintings on display at the Euroa Library on Binney Street.

With a focus on realism, the beautiful artworks cover the walls of the library in Euroa’s main street.

Margaret had offered to display the paintings and the library was more than happy to provide a platform for the art to be shown to locals and visitors to the area.

They have been up in the library since mid-April and will be remaining on display until the end of May. With many in town calling for more public displays of arts from local residents, the library is a must-attend venue to see Margaret’s paintings.

Leanne Baker assisted Margaret in getting the paintings displayed and encouraged more people to follow in the artist’s footsteps.

“It’s such a fabulous space in the library that we should be getting more people in and participating,” Ms Baker said.

“The artwork has something for everyone and ranges in different subjects.”

The paintings include realistic recreations of Euroa landmarks such as a painting of the Butter Factory in the early 20th century in addition to houses and animals including horses, cattle and a long-necked turtle that features in the children’s corner of the library.

Margaret opened up on her favourite painting hanging up in the library.

“I like the realistic look of paintings and the dripping water tap is my favourite,” she said.

Margaret modestly suggested that more people should get involved with art and look at ways to start.

“Anyone can do art, they really can,” Ms Sibely said.

“If you want to do it, you will.”

LOCAL shearer Bernie Walker was among five people inducted into the Australian Shearers’ Hall of Fame in Hay, New South Wales over the Easter weekend.

Bernie Walker OAM is a well-known Euroa identity and a life member of the Golden Shears World Council.

Born and bred in Euroa, Bernie started shearing at 16 years old and played an active role in establishing Golden Shears Australia and the bi-annual Test Matches between Australia and New Zealand.

Also receiving the honour was Cathryn Wendelborn who made history as she became the first woman to be inducted into the hall of fame.

Ms Wendelborn began shearing in 1982 and became a trail blazer for women shearers travelling widely in Australia and New Zealand.

Also inducted were Ray Anderson and Gene Mills who represented Australia in Test Matches against New Zealand with Golden Shears Australia at the Euroa Town Hall and in Masterton NZ. The final inductee was Dan Cooper Snr, an indigenous man from Moree NSW, who shore a world record 316 merino sheep at Bundoran Station in Queensland in 1910, a record which was eventually broken by his son Danny who shore 327 at Edenhope, Victoria in 1947.

Euroa Health unveils new ‘cuddle bed’ EUROA Health have unveiled a new cuddle bed to better assist residents during palliative care.

Cuddle Beds offer patients and loved ones a compassionate approach to end-of-life care with their larger-sized patient beds.

This approach to care can have a huge impact on patients who can often feel isolated, and provides family members with the opportunity to feel close in a hospital or hospice setting.

The idea to purchase a cuddle bed for Euroa Health was born in May 2020 after Mrs Bronwyn Powell passed away at Granite Hill.

In the days prior to her passing, Bronwyn had many visits from her grandchildren who lovingly sat on and climbed all over her bed just like they would have at home.

Euroa Health chief executive officer Cherree Hunter directed the Euroa Health 2020/2021 Membership fees would go towards the cost to purchase a cuddle bed for the facility resulting in the Euroa Community and people from afar donating $11,000 so that families can experience greater closeness for patients and their families.

Speaking at the unveiling, Ms Hunter spoke glowingly of the new addition to the facility.

“This cuddle bed has already been supporting residents and we have some beautiful stories around that,” she said.

“We’ve seen the bed be used for people who have gone on this journey and to see them celebrate those precious moments

A chance introduction from Palliative Care Victoria led Euroa Health to Kyla-Jane Rickard, after each of them had made separate enquiries regarding a cuddle bed.

Kyla-Jane had lost her mother, Paula Hunt, in 2010 from bowel cancer and had started a fundraiser which also raised a total of $11,000 through a gofundme page by Christmas Eve 2019.

Kyla-Jane wanted to recreate for others the precious intimacy they were so fortunate to have with her Mum at home, where they were able to curl up close on her double bed to hold hands or simply watch television together in the lead up to her passing.

There were tears of joy when Euroa Health and Kyla-Jane realised that this purchase could become a reality for both her family and the local Health Service.

Kyla-Jane says that her mother would absolutely love the bed finding a home at a health care provider which had its beginnings as a Bush Nursing Hospital.

Paula always had an affinity for history and high admiration for the people who worked hard to create change and provide for others, just like those nurses and doctors would have done under extreme conditions all those years ago.

Paula is survived by her husband Keith Hunt, daughter KylaJane and husband Simon Rickard and their children Tarkyn and Jarrah.

Since Euroa Health’s formation as a Bush Nursing Hospital in 1927, they have continue to be recognised as a significant member of the Euroa and outlying communities as a health care provider.

This cuddle bed has already been supporting patients and their families at Euroa Health and feedback from families who have used the bed said that it has given them immense comfort and the feedback from the nursing staff who used the bed has been incredibly positive.

This is Euroa Health’s first cuddle bed and is one of only a very small number in Victoria.

This is a great outcome for a regional health care provider enabling Euroa Health to provide best practice care and hope that the families who sadly lose a loved one find comfort in the use of the cuddle bed, as the bed can be used as a single or double bed depending on the patient and hospital’s needs.

Due to many delays of due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Euroa Health cuddle bed was officially opened last Thursday.

Easter is about the Resurrection of Jesus after His crucifixion two millennia ago. (as much earlier prophesied in Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53).

This event happened on the anniversary of the day the Israelites left Egypt 13 centuries earlier, after being enslaved for centuries. (Exodus 6-14) Easter in Latin and Greek is Pascha meaning “Passover’.

The Bible describes Christ as our ‘Passover Lamb’ (1 Cor. 5:7) referring to the first Passover. The climax of the ten plagues against Pharoahs’ Egypt, when he refused to release Moses people, was the death of firstborns. The Israelites were instructed to mark their doorposts with the blood of sacrificed lamb and death ‘passed-over ‘their dwellings, unlike the Egyptians. (Exodus 12:12,13) Those first Israelites had to kill and roast their best lamb that night, careful not to break any bones (as Jesus bones were prophesied not to be broken, as usual in crucifixion) (John 19:33) God commanded they eat quickly with belts fastened, sandals on, staffs ready to depart quickly from Egypt (Exod 12:9-11) because Pharoah would finally relent (initially) and let Gods’ people go. That night was a full moon, and Easter is still celebrated according to the full moon date.

Easter is a narrative of good and bad. God said “all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory (Holiness) of God.”’ (Rom.3:23) and “the penalty of sin is death”. (Rom. 6:23) The good news is that, as God provided covering for those Israelites at the very first Passover, so He has now provided permanent covering to deal with humanity’s many evil ways.

Christ died on the Cross and rose three days later, for any willing to receive His mercy and grace. (John 1: 29, 1 Peter 1;19, I Cor.5:7) The original Israelites escaped, through the supernaturally parted Red Sea_ into their Promised Land. Likewise, when we humbly accept Christs’ Love and forgiveness, gained through His blood_ we’re freed from our bondage, to live in our promised places.

Scripture says; ‘If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”. (Rom 10:9).

This requires faith; believing something to be true because God has provided ample evidence for His trustworthiness; Genesis to Revelation and in millions of transformed lives.

Christs’ persecutors forced a crown of vicious thorns over His innocent brow. Jesus wore that crown of thorns so that mankind could wear crowns of glory. Thorns in Scripture represent sin. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve disobeyed God, who said “Cursed is the ground because of you… thorns and thistles will now grow…” (Gen 3:17-18).

Mankind is forever being caught in ‘brambles’ of envy, anger, shame, discouragement, guilt, bitterness and unforgiveness. These are the ‘wars’ we’re now enabled to win through surrender to Christ, who promises to never leave nor forsake us.(1 John 4:10, Matt.28:20)), who empowers us with His spiritual strengths. (Gal. 5:22-25).

Eternal assurance is the historical fact _of Jesus Christs’ Resurrection.

The global climate emergency needs urgent action to protect all living creatures and ecologies. We support clean, renewable energy and sustainable development, transport and primary production. Government, businesses and communities must work together for a viable future for our people and environment.

Our rural community has been hard hit by the pandemic restrictions, especially businesses which rely on tourism, hospitality and retail. I will support urgent funding for economic stimulation for Indi, with local consultation and accountability for successful results.

Like most Australians, I oppose the unregulated cruelty of live export, and will support domestic processing of export meat products.

The destruction of our freedom and rights over the past two years of virus madness and the massive debt that the Federal Government racked up at the same time. I want future generations to enjoy a free way of life like all Australians did prior to the madness. The debt will slowly destroy our economy if not paid back.

Issues affecting to Indi are health, education and cost of living. We need our hospitals and other health services well funded and supported to provide care at all levels across the electorate. In regard to education the UAP will increase education funding by $20 billion in the first three years and abolish HECS fees. The increasing cost of living will be addressed by a regional tax concession of 20% for those living further than 200km from a capital city, increasing the age pension by $180 a fortnight and encouraging businesses to relocate to rural areas.

I joined politics because I feel we the people have lost our voice. I feel that a lot of major politicians have forgotten the people of Australia.

My values and principles are first and foremost honesty and transparency. I was raised with the values of truth and honesty and believe they are one of the most important parts of politics that should be stood by every day.

Three key issues that keep coming up in conversation that I have with people in Indi are Health, Education and Farming. One Nation has individual policies on all these three subjects.

Health - we recognise the need to bolster the number of regional doctors, nurses and other critical health professionals and will do so by introducing three year contracts for newly qualified medical professionals and in return pay their HECS-HELP loans in full.

I feel all of One Nation’s policies have been created to suit the communities of Indi and Australia.

We are at a critical point in history. I will be unable to look my children in the eye and answer to them if I don’t do all that I can to ensure they have a liveable planet, a diverse environment and a fair society to live in. As Indi’s federal MP, I would be guided by the Greens’ principles of ecological sustainability, social justice, grass roots democracy and nonviolence.

Through my lived experience with Totally Renewal Yackandandah and Indigo Power in developing up-scalable renewable energy at a community level, I have the knowledge and experience to facilitate similar projects across Indi.

Aged Care: Ensuring our record funding for aged care supports keeping couples together and allows as many as possible to age in their own home.

Housing: It’s great that people are moving to our region, so we will build more homes in regional Australia by providing 10,000 low-deposit guarantees each financial year for those moving to, or within, regional areas.

Connectivity: We invested heavily in regional telecommunications, after Labor did nothing, but there is more to do. Continuing to upgrade mobile towers and fix black spots is vital to give us the ability to work from home in the future.

My decision to stand cemented during the Black Summer bushfires. To have a Prime Minister on holiday when our country was literally on fire enraged me. We need representatives in government with not only the will but the power and ability to make things happen and I know I can do that as a member of a Labor Government. Simply put, I want to solve problems and improve our chances of a prosperous, healthy future.

Housing, health, future vision. Labor has strong policies on building 30,000 new affordable homes, but better than that we have the track record of establishing strong relationships with all levels of government and this is the only way we’ll solve this housing crisis.

I will get better rural health care throughout Indi, not just in the cities. Labor’s plan to protect and fix Medicare is clear. And I have a clear vision for Indi based on Labor values of fair pay for a day’s work, compassion and equality for all and a government that sees us as a society, not an economy.

Elections provide an opportunity to lobby government.

Eight years ago, I proposed we should have rehabilitation services in regional Victoria. Both major parties adopted the policy, and we now have rehabilitation services in Wangaratta, Corio and Traralgon. I brought $52.1 million to rural Victoria, without being elected. In contrast, while elected, Ms Haines has brought only $6.8 million. My guiding principles are personal freedoms, lower taxes and less government.

Unlike Helen Haines, we have policies.

We would reduce taxation by increasing the tax-free threshold to $40,000, increasing incentives to enter the workforce, especially seasonal workers; Decreasing taxation to a flat 20% to reward people for working, and stop punishing people who work overtime; Removing company tax on reinvested profits, to encourage investment and jobs.

Personal Freedom: We would allow freedom of speech and assembly; abolish secret tribunal hearings and internet censorship; abolish liability of internet page owners for the posts of other people.

A Nuclear energy trial of the safest, modern technologies for providing clean base-load power.

We face one of the most uncertain economic and geopolitical times in our nation’s history, we need strong leaders in Canberra. Leaders that deliver for our local community, but also play a role in shaping Australia.

I’m standing to see better leadership and sound economic management in politics. To ensure governments never take us for granted again. To bring national security experience to government in a changing national security landscape.

Listening to community, I’ve heard a need for infrastructure investment - especially in health, a need to grow the economy, a need to create conditions for private investment in our region, bringing jobs and a strong local economy.

My Liberal Plan for Indi will create a stronger future through: Infrastructure investment - road and rail, renewable energy, and importantly, health.

Manufacturing – attracting medium and large manufacturers to the region.

Trade and Tourism – I will work to open new markets and push for trade deals that benefit our region, promoting the goods and services we produce right here in the North East.

Ceremonies held across the region for Anzac Day

By GUS RIDDER TOWNS across the Strathbogie Shire gathered on Anzac Day to hold ceremonies commemorating the servicemen and women who died during war.

In Violet Town, many gathered at dawn for the initial service at the Boer War memorial at the Community centre lawn on Cowslip Street.

Violet Town also held a later

ceremony with a march from the football oval to the memorial beginning at 11am.

Wreaths were laid during the commemorative service that was attended by many.

In Avenel, there was a wreath laying ceremony held at the Avenel Cenotaph in Jubilee park at 11am.

Over 200 people attended, with one attendee noting that missing previous years had en-

couraged many to attend.

“We’d missed the last couple of years due to COVID, so it was really clear that everyone wanted to make sure they were there today,” she said.

Longwood held a march down Hurley Street towards the memorial at 9am, paying tribute with a ceremony following the march.

In Nagambie, a dawn service was followed by commemorations from 10am to 1pm with a

march and ceremony.

Euroa also held a smaller service on Friday for residents of the Granite Hill aged-care facility.

Euroa RSL President, Phil Munt, spoke at the ceremony and invited residents and guests to lay wreaths.

The service featured guest speakers from the Euroa Secondary School and prayers from retired reverend and RSL member, Norman Hart.

Nagambie observes Anzac Day

By DIANE GRANT ON April 25 in Nagambie close to 50 veterans and patriotic locals gathered at the Nagambie Cenotaph for the first Anzac Day Dawn Service to be held in decades.

This was followed by the 10am Anzac Day service held in the Mechanics Hall with David Keall RSL vice president, Reverend Richard Pennington and Officer Commanding of Proof and Experimental Establishment Graytown, Major Bryan Brown - guest speaker and RSL members taking part in the service in front veterans and their families, and local groups and schools.

In bright autumn sunshine a short march was made to the Nagambie cenotaph to honour and remember those who had served their countries of Australia and New Zealand over 100 years ago.

A military catafalque party from P&EE Graytown mounted on the cenotaph garden path, and an army flag orderly manned the flag pole.

The short memorial ceremony was led by RSL member Ken Lewis who read the requiem (that pays tribute to all those who

served and died for their country and those who are still serving their nation in Australia and around the world).

He then called upon the various group representatives to lay their wreaths in memory of those who paid the supreme sacrifice.

It was time to remember the soldiers of Gallipoli, Alamein, Vietnam, The Gulf and Afghanistan and Australian peacekeeping forces who served in Somalia, Cambodia and East Timor and other areas.

This could only be achieved because of the support of families and the people of Australia and New Zealand.

This too is part of the ANZAC spirit and the dedication of those who support our serviceman must also be remembered.

The Ode, Last Post, one minute silence and Reveille took place.

The playing of the National Anthems of New Zealand and Australia concluded the 2022 Anzac Day Nagambie ceremony.

Longwood looking for better luck against Lancaster KDFNL - LONGWOOD FOOTBALL SENIORS A TOUGH day at the office with a couple of players out with Covid and work commitments.

We got a full side out on the park with the help from the Under 18’s and Reserves (appreciate so much).

First quarter was a solid performance from the Leggers with Ryan Cumberland finishing off some great work from up the ground, with our two goals.

Not much to cheer for in the next three quarters.

But we did not throw in the towel and let Girgarre

run over us in the last.

We worked hard with no one on the bench in the last, and held Gig to five goals.

Better players Geordie Mcmurtrie, Matty Ranger and Nathan Watson.

The positives out of Saturday our A grade netball getting their second win of the season, the amount of players and supporters in Girgarre’s room after the game and the great vibe that was back at the Peppermill.

With a few players missing due to injury and COVID, the boys battled hard all day, Justin Purdey was

a stand out in the middle of the ground, Benny grayham and Jake Dimech worked hard all day, Josh Dowell played well in the Ruck giving us first opportunity at ground level.

Unfortunately we got a bit of a reality check with full credit to Girgarre, next week we face a new challenge as we host Lancaster at home we will regroup and get some players back and look forward to the next opportunity FOOTBALL UNDER 18 THE under 18s had a hard hit out on Saturday.

We started with 16 and

ended up with 12 due to injuries.

The first half we had all the run and possession but ran out of legs due to their bigger bodies taking the run out of us.

The boys didn’t give up and kept running till the final siren.

FOOTBALL UNDER 13 THE U13s footballers travelled to Dookie and helped Merrigum boost it’s numbers in a warm sunny contest on the big expanses of Dookies ground.

Dookie started off well but were reined in once the combined side got moving.

Jac Roobs tackling was a standout again and Cooper Goodall and Tom Macdermid got plenty of the ball sending it forward.

Second quarter was Billy Wilsons turn to get in on the action with some great defending. Billy loves the backline and never misses out on a contest.

Will Roob switched to defence and put plenty of pressure on the Dookie forwards with his tackling and several certain goals ended in points.

Brother Jac continued his good work around the ball getting under the skin

of the opposition.

After half time the junior Redlegs were feeling the fatigue partly due to their coach not evening up the numbers and Dookie began to control the game despite Jazmyn Wilsons best efforts down back.

This continued on for the last quarter and Jazmyn’s marking was the highlight.

Merrigum’s rugby converts got into the hang of things and showed lots of potential with their willingness to take on tacklers.

BOG was Jac Roob 2nd went to Jazmyn Wilson and 3rd was Billy Wilson.

Under 11 netballers battle gallantly Grace, Ivy, Charlotte had big task keeping the Rebels from scoring and worked fantastic as a team to help close the gap to 10-12 coming in the last.

Evie also played her first match and had a tough job as WD to slow the ball down.

The final quarter saw the Rebels too strong for the girls, going down 11-18.

Many thanks to our new coach, Caitlin who inspired the girls to all played their best on the day.

Well done.

ON Sunday the Euroa Magpies under 11 girls played their first match back against a competitive Alexandra Rebels.

In the first quarter the girls started well and held off the opposition for a 3-2 lead.

Mable played her first match for the team and was an excellent addition as WA working the ball through the centre while assisting a fast-paced Mia. Sissy and Asha were consistent in goals and helped the team fight back after falling behind in the second.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB AUTUMN continues to shine with the Nagambie course benefitting with a late surge in growth due good rain and plenty of sunshine.

Dean Brown was the winning golfer with 36 points smoking it off the tee and enjoying the extra grass due to ideal weather conditions.

Runner up with 35 points went the way of Glen Evans with a solid round that could have easily produced more, third was Chris Roberts finding some form after a recent rough patch, with Michael Nolan also 34 losing out to Roberts on count back.

The nearest the pin prizes went Glen Evans with an almighty thrust to reach the 3rd, the big ‘President & Life Member’ Jeff Lodding taking advantage of the shortened 13th and Mick O’Connell still in shock from landing one onto the 16th. Next week’s golf will be a Monthly Medal - stroke event with J. Lodding on office duty and T. Baldwin in the bar.

Only six players turned out for a game of Stableford and the conditions on the course were amazing after all the rain we had for the prior two days.

The winner was Moz Fowler with 30 pts.

9 hole winner was Jane Bow with 17 pts.

18 hole balls went to Moz 30 pts. and Jane 27 pts.

9 hole balls went to Jane 17 pts. and Moz 14 pts. on a C/B from Karyn Thompson.

Moz also took out the only N/P winner on the 3rd.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

By ROB BROWNLEE ON Saturday 23rd stableford was played for the first round of the Wally Dunn Trophy.

Twenty six players took cards including Shane Rawlings and his son Jacob who had flown in at 5am on the Red Eye from Darwin.

Greg Roberts kept his form going winning with 39 points, for this effort he won the dinner for two sponsored at the Euroa Hotel.

Ladies winner was Mavis Brierley with 36 points, her round could have been so much better as it included three wipes.

Line balls were won by Jim Mac Allister with 37 points, 24 of these on the front nine.

Kerry Hewlett 36 points and Jacob Rawlings all of fourteen playing his first round on the course also with 36 points, he parred the back nine.

Peter Phillips and Mick Dixey also had 36 points.

Nearest the pins on the 4th Mavis Brierley, 8th Graeme Carnegie, 15th Club, 17th Jacob Rawlings who almost holed out.

Mens drive and pitch was Jarcob Rawlings, ladies drive and pitch was Mavis Brierley.

Straightest drive was Mathew Foster.

Almost all is in readiness at the club for hosting the Victorian Veterans Golf Association Carnival, it is noticeable some of the greens are now bigger.

Golf next Saturday 30th April has yet to be decided on the format, but Mal Inglis will be sending off the field.

AVENEL GOLF CLUB A BEAUTIFUL Autumn day greeted golfers last Saturday and saw several smart players turn up in shorts and quite a few others wishing they had.

Fifteen juniors turned up for the Saturday morning competition - new faces Griffin, Fletcher, Abby and Tilly were a great addition to the field and will be ones to watch in the future.

Lachie OB and Will Lynch were overheard before the round stating there were no Smith’s and no Hudson in the field so they were a good chance to get the chocolates.

Turns out Will’s younger brother Nick had other ideas, winning the scratch competition with a fantastic 33, three shots clear of Will and Lachie another three behind.

The Handicap comp was a closer race, with a three way tie on nett 22.

Bob Taylor-White triumphed via countback, with Sadie Harrap second and Charlie Lynch third.

It was monthly medal day so of course the game was stroke.

The warm weather failed to produce any “hot” scores, with only one player managing to play to his handicap.

The front nine was particularly challenging for most as it had been left uncut for spraying purposes.

On that note, players are advised not to pick/eat any mushrooms for a while as the course was to be sprayed on Monday.

A small field of ladies vied for the April Medal with Captain Lyn claiming the win with 76 nett.

Lyn and Anne Burns were ball winners, Maureen King was nearest the pin on the 18th and Pam Pedder collected a ball for the least putts (25).

Twelve men took to the course and it proved to be Captain’s day, as Captain Jed collected the Medal with 72 nett.

Resuming from recent arm surgery, Adam Harrap played well to be runner-up with 74 nett. Line balls went to Tim Batten and Dale Smith (both 78 nett) and Bill Eddy (80 nett).

The Birdie hole, NTP and Drive & Pitch balls all remained with the club.

Apparently, Terry Lowis collected a couple of birdies during his round - a magpie and a cockatoo had their feathers ruffled by his ball.

Meanwhile, Alex thought he’d practice hitting balls into his block beside the 6th fairway on the new estate - seems he needs a bit more practice as he only got two into his block and two into someone else’s.

The men’s pennant team travelled to Lancefield to take on Kilmore and unfortunately went down 3/2 with Jed and Dale being the winners and Tim was unlucky to go down on the 19th.

This Saturday is a stableford round and we hope to see a few more players having a game.

Finally, older members will be saddened to hear of the passing of former member Glenys Ranger.

Mixed results for Violet Town netballers KDFNL - VIOLET TOWN NETBALL 13 & UNDER THE Violet Town team were eager to get back out on court as they missed round two due to a forfeit.

The young team started off with some great passages of play getting the ball the court to their shooters.

Defensively they were putting the pressure on the much older Avenel team but Avenel then started to gain momentum and ended up being too strong for Violet Town.

Violet Town tried hard to the end and should hold their heads up high.

Final scores VT 1 def by Avenel 32.

Awards went to Penny Goss & Isabella Jones.

15 & UNDER AFTER a couple of weeks off the girls started slowly and allowed Avenel to keep that momentum going all throughout the match.

Violet Town continued the try hard all match with some fantastic passages of play and coming up with some amazing intercept but unfortunately it was not enough and Avenel were too strong for the Violet Town team.

C GRADE THE team started off the game by recognising and celebrating Brianna Cotchin’s 100th C grade match.

The Violet Town girls were eager to get off to good start for Brianna and they did, with everyone working hard in attack to create lots of scoring opportunities.

Defenders continued to come up with ball and help get the ball down the court well to the shooting end.

Some slight changes were made at quarter and the goals started to full, with Erin and Karalee shooting and working well together.

Everyone continued to work hard.

It was a hot day and at half time lots of changes were made with the VT team adjusting well to these changes, putting on a lot of

pressure in defence.

The girls finished off the game well, never giving up until the final whistle.

Lots of positives and improvement individually as a team.

Well done VT, and Brianna.

B GRADE VIOLET Town came out strong from the first whistle, with solid communication through the court. Teagan was able to control the goal circle for Violet Town giving us a solid leave.

VT fought hard for every loose ball and were able to convert their turnovers into goals.

Emma helped kept our midcourt working hard and keeping their intensity high, while Steph had hands to every rebound in the defence end.

Violet Town played a solid four quarters of netball and were able to secure their second win for the season.

Final Score VT 38 def Avenel 27. Best On Court Teagan Kubeil, Second Best Emma Warnock.

A GRADE VIOLET Town came out strong with shooters Imy and Prue working well together getting Violet Town of to a 10-goal lead to end the first quarter.

Imy and Prue continued to work well together, maintaining their lead, while Britt and Kolby worked hard in defence, keeping Avenel to only 6 goals for the second quarter.

Jo and Jayde worked hard in the centre to chase loose balls and control the ball down the court. Violet Town went into the final quarter with a 24-goal lead but wanted to finish of the game strongly with great feeding into the ring by Jo and Prue.

The shooters continued to shot well and extended their lead, winning the match by 31.

Corradin, Carracher take top spots in honor board qualifier A LARGE group of 29 men and 13 Ladies played in perfect Easter weather conditions.

The greens are coming back nicely after being scarified and the mower will be able to be dropped to bring them back to their best.

Jenny Thompson won the Ladies 18-hole event with 38 points from Melissa Eddy and Judy McLean, both with 34.

Ronnie Doxey’s 17 points was the best in the 9-hole event.

Deb Cox was on target claiming both Nearest the Pins.

Chris McKay made a welcome return with 41 points

from his handicap of four while his brother Peter had 39 points off scratch.

Bill Wright, Brian Rosenbrock and Dick Farmer all had 37. Peter McMahon was on 36, only 6 players were able to play to their handicaps.

On Wednesday, Big Dav Mackrell found his workplace to his liking, winning division one with plus four and Don Bubeck took out division two also on a plus four.

Ball winners N Byrnes, + 4, J Moran +2, D Farmer +2, F O’Connor and P McCarthy were square.

The club was delighted to have 19 juniors along for

the coaching clinic.

Well done to Gail, Neil and Judy for organizing.

Bill Wright and Cam Roper also played off in the final of the Lewis Family Singles Match Play which Bill won 3/2, bringing Cam’s run of wins to a close.

Bill played well throughout the four rounds to claim another Honor Board event.

50 mm of rain saw the course closed sign go up for the Wednesday Golf competitions, however the rain did the course the world of god and perfect conditions prevailed on the weekend for the Men to play the qualifying round of the Murphy Motors four ball

44 players in pairs played the four ball par event, striving for the top eight qualifying positions.

Mark Corradin and Ed Carracher’s class showed through with a brilliant plus eight to take the honours for the day and the top qualifying spot.

Next were Owen Robertson and Dav Mackrell on + 7 on countback to Phil Squires and John Gilbert + 7 Can Roper and Sam Steers Had + 5 as did each of Marcus Steers, Andrew Cullen Ash Pedder, and Steve Brook.

had two ball birdies.

The top eight to qualify will now play match play for this coveted trophy.

Next round is Carracher and Corradin to play Burke and Paul Robetson and Mackrell to play Redfern and Meehan Squires and Gilbert to play Roper and Steers while Cullen and Marcus steers take on Pedder and Brook.

All players are requested to get their matches on as soon as possible so the event can advance.

The Ladies event had 25 players in a par event which was won by Jenny Thompson in division one and Deb Cox in division two, both

finishing square for the day.

Other good scores were Dee Mc Martin -1 Ros Doxey -2 Sarah Bullen -2 and Dot Rule and Ronnie Doxey -3. Judy Mclean picked up two nearest the pins.

In other club news Bill Wright recently took out the Lewis family knockout event over Cam Roper winning three and four.

Bill played well throughout the four rounds to claim the prize.

An Anzac day mixed event was played on Monday.

Next week it is stableford for the men, the ladies Alexandra tournament is on Thursday.

Longwood A grade secure their first victory KDFNL - LONGWOOD NETBALL A GRADE PLAYERS came into this match with determination and grit, knowing we were to face a competitive side.

Goal for goal in the first quarter said it’s could be anyone’s game.

Hitting our goaling rhythm in the second quarter gave us the lead we were striving for. In the third quarter Gig fought back hard pulling away the gap, which demanded a tough hit out in the fourth.

Longwood responded with high intensity, quick handed give and go passing in play, and composure through the midcourt, so we were able to capitalise on our hard earned defensive overturns, converting those opportunities to goal.

Best on court was the dynamite defence from GK Kristy Bennett, backed up by the hunting instincts of GD Brooke Bennett for coaches award.

Hard work pays off, that will be our strategy in preparing for Lancaster next round.

B GRADE THE Redlegs entered round three without key players at both the goaling and defence ends due to injury, and with the sun shining and warm weather, we knew there was a tough game ahead.

After the first half the Redlegs trailed by only eight goals, but great defensive pressure and accurate shooting at the other end meant we were still very much in the game.

In the second half fatigue set in and unfortunately saw many unforced errors, along with more injuries, which allowed Gig to increase their lead to finish with a 19 goal win.

A great effort from the girls, we know what we need to work on now, and that we will this week at training.

Shout out to Boo Norris who played a stellar debut game for the Redlegs, and to Michelle and Carly for doubling up and taking the court the second time for the day!

Best On Gail Galvin Coaches Award Sarah Delahey UNDER 17 UNDER 17s played a great game, obviously still have a lot to work on.

But when told what needs to be fixed the girls will adjust to what they need to do.

We gave them a goal in the third quarter to shoot five goals, they ended up shooting 13 and absolutely had us jumping with joy because that was a win in itself.

BOC goes to a player that plays her heart out every game and we just need to keep that love of the game and that goes to Lily Cooper.

Coaches was given to Millie Delahey who took on board everything we told her to do and did it perfectly.

UNDER 15 THE U15s netball showed really strong connections on the court and put up a good fight.

KEY DEFENCE: Longwood goal defence Lisa Morey gets off the ground to defend around the ring while goal keeper Michelle Groom hangs back.

The hot weather effectively had an impact on our girls with a lot of mixed decision making during the second half of the game which allowed our opponent to come away with a 15 goal victory.

BOC was awarded to Bindi Stuart who had hands over every ball and gained us plenty of intercepts in WD. Coach’s award was given to Ruby Gamble who just had great positivity on the court and continues to push herself every week.

Special thanks to Allira and Lily for doubling up for U13s to sit our

bench as well as Bethy and Bella for stepping up to assist the U17s.

UNDER 13 THE under 13s had a great game this week whilst scoring our first few goals of the season and getting more of a feel for the game.

Coming into the game with a bare seven and no bench.

Everyone on the court continued to push themselves and try their hardest.

Our best on went to Marley Galvin who played four quarters of centre and who had a great voice on court, was always pushing her-

self to bring the ball down court, and had also had her hands to a few intercepts.

Our coach’s award went to Mikayla Looker who shot some of the many goals this week and was always pushing herself to get in front of her player and always using her voice to encourage the girls bringing the ball down court.

Jess and I are very proud of the girls this week we couldn’t happier with their performance and we are so proud of them for having great crack throughout the whole game.

Avenel remain football benchmark THE Violet Town Football and Netball Club welcomed premiership favourites Avenel on Saturday in perfect conditions.

It was a chance to see if the Towners are up there with the best playing the best.

The answer is yes, but a bit to go to catch this smooth Kasey Duncan drilled outfit from swan land.

Avenel were all over the home side early with the Towners defence under enormous pressure but Ryan Jennings and Jett Bewick’s back six held firm.

Nine shots to three by quarter time gave the visitors only a 16-point lead but they looked dominant. The Towners started to make some ground in the second quarter, with Tim Ross quelling the Avenel coach and the onballers started to dictate terms.

Two late quarter goals hurt though, the margin 21 points at the long break.

The second half started with the home side on top, the margin was cut to nine points before three late goals from the visitors enabling them to be 28 points up at the late change.

A seesawing battle in the last, again the margin was reduced, this time to 12 points but the flag favourites showed their class kick-

ing three late goals to run out deserving winners by 30 points.

It was a beautiful day in front of a good crowd, almost finals conditions, Avenel were the better side and duly saluted.

For the home side James Herring belies his years, a natural hard nut centre half back, against a talented opposition forward line he was amazing, hopefully a 200game veteran in 10 years.

Jack Exell at centre half forward is the recruit of the year, brilliant and kept the Towners in with a chance all day particularly early.

Assistant coach Jett Bewick was like a general down back, under pressure but such a cool head and clever.

The veteran Tim Ross saluted again, never plays a bad game, what an engine and tough as nails could’ve played in the 70’s and 80’s easily.

Lachy Baldwin consumed the football, a regulation 36 touches he made sure the on ball brigade ended up taking the chocolates on the day, whilst Zach Berthun with 25 touches was instrumental in many forward thrusts and defensive moves.

Charlie Hunter playing his first game was good until an untimely injury shortened his game.

A grade women defeat strong Seymour side GVFL - EUROA NETBALL A GRADE EUROA were keen to get off to a good start after winning the emotional coin toss at the ANZAC ceremony.

Euroa did start well, but Seymour was not going to let them have it all their own way and with a couple of turnovers Seymour started to get on top.

Kellie Davidson rallied her team with a couple of beautiful intercepts and with pressure in defence

by Ellie Warnock, Tylah Marchbank and Sophie Owen, Euroa started to pull back Seymour’s lead finishing the quarter only one goal down.

The Euroa girls came out in the second quarter like they finished the first and with some beautiful shooting by Bree Poole and Karly Wappett against a much taller defence, started to take the lead.

Bridget Hill and Tylah were closing down the Seymour drive, and the fast midcourt of Kellie and Eliza Hoare was seeing Euroa score quickly, turning it around to a five goal lead.

Euroa did not falter in the third quarter continuing the defensive pressure and good rebounding.

Again, Euroa’s drive down the court was on point, with Bree and Karly rewarding the team with accurate goaling and increasing the lead to be ahead 10 goals going into the last quarter.

The real test was going to be if the girls could keep the pressure on in the last quarter. Seymour kept coming, showing that you cannot rest on your laurels until the final whistle blows.

The Euroa girls showed control and held on to have a great win by four goals in what was a whole team effort.

Euroa need to continue playing this quality of netball as they take on a very strong Shepparton Swans next week.

Euroa 42. Seymour 38 Best Players awarded by the coach - Kellie Davidson, Karly Wappett, Tylah Marchbank B GRADE B GRADE had a tough game against an undefeated Seymour side.

Following a strong start, Euroa were able to stay in touch for the most part, with the lead beginning to stretch to 10 goals by three quarter time.

Tayla Robinson was a stand out for Euroa, being the main ball carrier to feed the goal circle in which Tahlia Howard was solid for the home team.

Katy Frewen had a hard slog in the defence end, keeping the Seymour goalers under pressure for the entire four quarters.

It was a great effort from Euroa who showed clear improvements from last week.

Best players awarded by the coach: Tayla Robinson, Tahlia Howard, Katy Frewen Seymour 58 Euroa 48 UNDER 17 EUROA played, and lost to, a very slick Seymour Lions outfit.

Whilst the final margin was 26 goals, this is not truly indicative of the effort and endeavour displayed by the Euroa team over four quarters.

However, missed opportunities and silly mistakes by all players cost the Magpies dearly as the

Seymour swooped on all chances presented to them.

After a very close and hard fought first term, the Lion lead was merely 5 goals.

Millie Watson played an absolute pearler in a number of positions on the court, reading the play beautifully and being instrumental in a number of turnovers.

Ably assisted by the long, lanky and loveable Laura Frewen, the Magpies turned defence into attack on a number of occasions.

Chloe Salter was also steadfast in defence, her ability to flick the ball away from her opponent without causing contact was a thing of beauty to behold.

Chloe’s defensive play is getting better and better each week, and she is going to be a thorn in the side of many players in the competition.

Meg Walker’s speed and agility through the centre of the court was a definite advantage on Saturday.

She, along with Hannah Kubeil, Abby Harrison and Lily Meehan, tried desperately to move the ball towards the Magpie goal ring- not

an easy feat, but one they did not stop attempting for the whole game.

Euroa’s goalers Molly Redfern and Sienna Trotter had a magnificent first quarter, shooting goals with confidence and ease.

The next two quarters however, were an exercise in frustration as the netball hit the ring, it dribbled around the ring, and on a number of occasions it actually went into the ring only to bounce back out again.

Honestly, it was enough to make Sharelle McMahon scream in frustration.

Persistence finally paid off, with both girls back in control, having regained their confidence by the final quarter.

Next week Euroa meet up with the Shepparton Swans, which will be another difficult task for the young Magpies.

A week on the training track to iron out a few wrinkles will be just what is needed before they venture across to Princess Park, knowing there is no such thing as an “easy week” when playing in

The girls were off to a flying start with a quick two goals to Tash Reid who continued to goal accurately throughout the game.

Tash and Ella Hill worked well together in goals which resulted in six goals in the first quarter.

Second quarter was all about defence with Tess Walker and Lily Fowler doing an amazing job in the ring. Maggie Pittock and Ruby Watson were all over the centre, working mighty hard.

This determination definitely paid off with Seymour only scoring two goals for the quarter which resulted in Euroa going into the main break leading 14 goals to 10.

In the third quarter there was no stopping Euroa with Marnie Salter

working hard for the centre pass and Scarlett Trotter and Oakley Paul reading the ball well, which made for some great intercepts.

The mid court was on fire with Maggie Pittock, Irish Anderson, Ruby Watson and Marnie Salter combining well to get the ball where it needed to be.

Issy Smith stepped it up as GS, keeping the scores tight with Euroa still in front. Euroa 21 to Seymour 19.

The final quarter proved harder for the Magpies but they definitely gave it their all, with Lily heading back on the court with a fire in her belly as Irish left the court injured.

Scarlett and Tess were doing an amazing job putting pressure on the Seymour goalers.

It was definitely a fight to the end but sadly Seymour proved just slightly stronger in the end.

Euroa Reserves suffer first defeat EUROA FOOTBALL RESERVES OUR Euroa Reserves team took to the field with a strong on paper but we knew it would be a strong contest against the Seymour Lions.

The game opened in the first quarter to a very even contest with the scores being even at the finish of quarter.

Both teams had opportunities to score, but both teams were placing much pressure on the players.

As the game continued during the second quarter the evenness continued also in the game with our reserves team going to the half time with a seven point lead.

It appeared that the team that could place the most pressure and be able to sustain the run would probably win the game.

Our Euroa team commenced the third quarter with a major blow losing two players in JD Hayes and Klay Giovannini due to hamstring injuries.

This would impact on our team during the second half of the game.

As has been the case, our Euroa reserves team continued in the third quarter to match the opposition and go to the three quarter break with a 10-point lead.

It was going to be a big challenge during the quarter to hold on but this was not to be the case.

Our team had opportunities early in the last quarter but did not take them,

As the last term went on the forward line of the Seymour team got on top of our defense scoring a six goal quarter whereas we were not able to hit the scoreboard.

All players worked hard giving their all but found the Seymour team too strong in the last quarter.

Euroa were best served

by Nick Brodie up forward who presented well taking strong marks and kicking well for goal with Nic As-

quith who was a strong defender winning many one on ones with the Seymour players setting up many clearances. Linc McKernan showed good leadership playing in defense and then going forward late in the game endeavoring to give us a lift.

Our onballers worked hard against the big bodies of the Seymour team who made it hard for our on onballers to run the ball from the stoppages.

It was a good team effort by our reserves that battled hard after losing players in the first half and finishing

with a number of players suffering from soreness.

Euroa 6-8-44 defeated by Seymour 11-5-71 Best Players: Nick Brodie, Nic Asquith, Jarmyn Tremellen, Zac Gleeson, Matt Ivill Pies hang on to beat Lions in thriller.

EUROA FOOTBALL UNDER 16

By ANNA TOLAND A SENSATIONAL day of Autumn greeted the under 16 boys who were hungry for a win after a solid thumping by Echuca the week before. The ground was very dewy and wet making the ball slippery and hard to grab on to.

Charlie Thompson started in the ruck where he won the first tap, but the conditions proved challenging and the ball was rushed in to Seymour’s forward line

where the first point of the match was scored.

Euroa came back quickly to score the first goal and kept Seymour quiet until close to the end of the quarter.

The conversation to come out of the huddle was that the boys were playing very good defensive football and were slowing the ball down with more successful stoppages.

Seymour came out flying in the second quarter and kicked a goal within the first five minutes.

Sam Leigh kicked a ripper goal after some tough footy and the boys gained some momentum.

There were great passages of play by Will Creevey, Darby Wilson and Ryan Hill where they dominated the midfield.

Archie Harrison kicked to Campbell Baker inching the footy down towards goal however the boys couldn’t consolidate and a point was kicked.

Euroa were down by a goal at half time.

The third quarter saw the boys playing to plan and dictating the play (thanks trusty huddle reporter) with some smart footy.

Highlights of the quarter were goals to Creevey and Hill and nearly Butler but Chiz “hungry” Thompson had other ideas marking the ball on the line and kicking a goal rather than letting Butlers go through.

Nathan tried again a bit later but scored a point.

Darby Wilson’s smother was sensational and lifted the boys to win the quarter by 14 points.

The ground was finally dry in the last quarter and the Euroa boys came out from the break enthused and energized.

Wil Smyth, Harrison Mills, Blake Hepworth all made a big impact with Dublin Anderson working hard to get the ball to the forwards. The Lions fate was sealed when Chiz kicked a goal not long before the siren and they ran away with the win by 13 points.

It was a great game of footy to watch at the home ground and the boys were happy with the win.

Euroa junior footballers take spectacular win EUROA FOOTBALL JUNIORS WELL, footy is officially back for 2022.

It has been a long-anticipated wait.

Leaving beautiful, sunny Euroa of 18 degrees for Alexandra, still with fog lifting and a fresh 12 degrees.

None of this was a concern to the players who were eager to get things underway.

With Coach Damien Saxon at the helm, and a full list of 26 players to choose from it was looking like a good year.

The first quarter started at a hectic pace.

Both sides physical and feeling each other out.

The backline was under pressure but were standing up well.

A forward thrust from hard work resulted in Coby Ross kicking a goal.

A great chase and pressure in the forward half from Ethan Saxon gave another chance to Coby . Kicking skills were on display .

Second quarter started well with a goal to Ethan for all his hard work around the ground.

It all came from Ollie Wilson’s shepherd for Sam mills in the backline.

Addie was everywhere as the Ruckman.

He propelled the ball forward again and Ethan S with a perfect delivery allowed Coby another shot on goal.

He did not disappoint.

Strong physical battle so far between the two teams.

Addie and Aaron helped each other out and Aaron handballed to Haimi, who kicked the ball forward and Ethan kicked another goal.

Euroa’s teamwork and foot skills were amazing.

In the third quarter Addie, Aaron, Ollie Wilson and Millsy junior were in the middle.

Euroa came out firing.

Euroa propelled the ball forward then followed up with intense forward pressure.

Aaron VDB grabbed the ball ran forward and slotted another for the black and white.

Ollie Swain followed up with a great running goal,

and when Ethan Saxon snapped from the pocket minutes later, the flood gates were starting to open.

Leo, Paddy Murphy and Leila provided the teamwork to keep Euroa going.

Ollie Wilson chipped in for a nice running goal.

Coach Saxon was delighted with his team after the

fourth quarter.

He wants everyone to be able to play all positions on the ground this year.

“It makes for a flexible team”.

Aaron VDB went in the ruck to give Addie a rest at center half back (if you call that a rest). Aaron punched the ball forward and Ethan

kicked into the forward line.

Addie, Will Dunn, Sharna and Leila were working hard all day.

Addie with his monster kicks gave the forwards many chances.

Coby Mann got on the end of one from hard forward pressure to kick a goal.

Euroa were home.

It was really a great team effort right across the board.

EUROA NETBALL UNDER 13 IN a fantastic show of skill and teamwork, the Euroa under 13 team took on Alexandra for a nine goal defeat.

The team were persistent, confident and well poised throughout the game, managing to stay on top of the home side throughout the match, claiming victory in the season opener.

The players named best on the day were goal defense Jade Raleigh, goal attack Lily Asquith and goal keeper Issy Smyth.

The final score was 18-9.

Magpies soar in their first win for season GVFL - EUROA SENIOR FOOTBALL IN its now traditional timeslot of Anzac Day ‘weekend’ the Euroa Magpies hosted Seymour Lions at Memorial Oval last Sunday in another clash of one of the oldest rivalries in country football.

Pre-game ANZAC Day ceremonies were held with wonderful representation from the Euroa RSL subbranch.

Opposing Captains of both netball and football tossed a coin to begin their respective matches and the day was underway.

Seymour were out of the blocks early with a couple of first quarter goals - this is where the Magpies asserted their authority however as the foot-passing, hard running and exciting forwards all came into their own.

Euroa piled on nine of the next 10 goals over the remaining time in the first half to have a handy buffer heading into the main break.

Adam Giobbi had a huge job down back and was doing very well.

Andrew Smith was yet again his dominant self in the ruck, giving the likes of Jack Hellier and Ben Giobbi

Jack McKernan was sensational up-forward with some long leads resulting in good targets for his team-mates up the ground.

Coming out in the third quarter the Euroa team were a little flat-footed, allowing Seymour to score the first two goals before replying with one of their own.

X-factor excitement machine Jett Trotter again displayed remarkable poise, elusiveness and class as he rendered the Seymour defenders incapable of stopping him, bringing the crowd to their feet in the process.

Ben Bath was showing just how much talent he has as he combined this with sheer gut-running to finish the day with four goals in a real ‘break-out’ game.

Fellow forwards Noah Hura, Tristan Davies and Erish Uthayakumar again underlined the multiple avenues to goal the Magpies have as they all joined in the goal spree.

In the end it was a wellearned outcome for coach Rowan’s men as they posted their first win for the season.

This now sets the side up to take on the Shepparton Swans next Saturday, April 30, in Shepparton.

Criterium return a great success THE Euroa town cycling criterium returned to the township over the 2022 Anzac day long weekend, drawing an impressive crowd with 119 competing entrants.

The event was run by the Shepparton Cycling Club, with hopes of returning to the township again in 2023 with a proposed date of April 22, 2023 to coincide once again with the Ride the Ranges cycling event.

The criterium is run primarily by volunteers, without which the Shepparton Cycling Club said they would not have been able to run such a successful event.

Events like this rely on local sponsorship, with great thanks going to the Strathbogie Shire, who provided the club with a grant that enabled them to go ahead with the event.

The event drew competitors from all over

Australia, with members from as far as Port Adelaide Cycling Club and aged from 5 to 76 years old.
