SUPPORTING COMMUNITY RECOVERY
S
TRATHBOGIE Shire, like most most parts of Australia, is no stranger to extreme weather events including floods. And while much of the recent inundation has eased locally, the Bureau of Meteorology and state emergency services have warned residents the impact of La Nina is expected to continue into the new year.
ROAD IMPACTS Strathbogie Shire Council is urging people to please take care driving on our rural roads which have been significantly impacted by flood. Their team is working around the clock to clear trees, repair road surfaces, unblock culverts and reopen roads, but many road surfaces have deteriorated to a point where some sections are difficult for drivers to navigate without significant reductions in speed.
The shire cannot urge the important of driving safely, and to the conditions, strongly enough. Strathbogie Shire has more than 2210km of roads - 1465km unsealed and 748km sealed. On top of this there are 521 bridges and culverts to maintain. Council knows poor road conditions are frustrating for the community and are working as hard as they can, but there is no quick fix. Flooding has damaged the roads so badly they must look at repairs that are above and beyond their normal maintenance programs. Council has already started advocating to State and Federal governments for funding. Last week council moved a motion at the Municipal Association of Victoria’s conference to lead a state-wide advocacy campaign calling on the Victorian Government
to increase funding for road maintenance. The motion was supported unanimously. Council is asking the community to please be understanding. They may not get to your road tomorrow, next week or even next month. Repairs are being triaged so repairs will ensure the most used roads are repaired first. You can submit a road request through council’s online portal at https://crm.strathbogie.vic. gov.au/webinput/CustomForm/ categorylist?show_tiles=y.
WASTE REMOVAL COUNCIL is organising for removal teams to come to the region and help with the job of removing waste from floodaffected properties. This service will be delivered free of charge to locals in
$1.50 (inc.GST)
SPORTING GROUNDS UNDER: The recent floods covered the sporting facilities at Euroa’s Memorial Oval, with the cricket nets and netball courts needing particular attention.
partnership with Emergency Recovery Victoria and the Victorian Government. Contractors will remove floodaffected waste from properties, and here are some important things we need you to do: 1. Register your flood-affected property by completing the online form at https://www. strathbogie.vic.gov.au/floodwaste-removal-service/. 2. Place your waste where it is safe and doesn’t become a hazard (if you can manage on your property for now) 3. Please keep mattresses separate from other waste if possible There is not currently a timeline for this service as yet, but council will need your information to send them to the right homes and businesses. Please remember you don’t have to wait and this can be arranged immediately. Council have also waived fees
at the Transfer Stations for flood affected waste - so residents can continue to access this service. The online form for the waste removal service can be found at: https://www.strathbogie.vic.gov. au/flood-waste-removal-service/.
TRANSFER STATIONS COUNCIL will be waiving fees to Transfer Stations and last week were extending hours to dispose of flood waste (such as carpet, affected furniture and bedding). At this stage it is expected all Transfer Stations will have returned to normal operating hours from Monday, October 24.
MOBILE LIBRARY OFF THE ROAD THE GV Libraries Mobile Library - that visits Avenel, Longwood and Strathbogie - is off the road. This service will return when it’s safe to travel.
