Lawrence Money is a newspaper columnist and comedian and was honoured to be one of the faces of Australia Day for Euroa.

Sadly his wife has tested positive for COVID-19 and they won’t be able to attend the ceremony this year.

“We have been joining rural communities on Australia Day for 16 years

and it is always an inspiring celebration of our wonderful country,” he said.

“This year particularly, as Australia edges out of the pandemic after two horrendous years, it is timely to reflect on our good fortune.”

On a more hopeful note, he will see if I can bring my Melbourne International

Comedy Festival show up to Euroa for a night later in the year.

“I’ve been a passionate advocate for Australia Day for 16 years, travelling with my wife Helen (a country girl) to rural Victorian towns to celebrate our wonderful Land Down Under,” Mr Money said.

“We love the way the various communities always come

together, whether it be little sausage sizzles or big brass bands, to salute Australia and its multiple blessings.

“This year in Euroa would have been looking at the funnier side of being Australian because I think we need it after the past two years of masks and lockdowns.”

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL POLICE are disappointed with an “unacceptable” level of motorists breaking the law on our roads over the holiday season.

As part of Operation Roadwise police detected 54 speeding drivers, nine drugaffected drivers, and three drink drivers on roads in the Mitchell Police Service Area, which includes Strathbogie Shire.

Divisional Superintendent Matthew Ryan said police worked around-the-clock during Operation Roadwise to target dangerous drivers over the Christmas period.

“Disappointingly, there is still an unacceptable number of drivers who have a blatant disregard for road safety in our region, particularly those who speed and make the choice to drive after consuming alcohol or drugs,” he said.

“The safety of our community is a top priority for police and we will continue to maintain a strong presence across the region, including highvisibility patrols targeting a range of criminal offending including drug-related offences, thefts and burglaries.

“Road safety will be a key focus in 2022, especially over

the summer months with an influx of Victorian holidaymakers expected to visit the region, particularly around the Lake Nagambie area.

“The Hume Highway and Goulburn Valley Freeway will be focus areas for police who will be targeting reckless driving including speeding, drink and drug driving, driver distraction, and those not using seatbelts.

“We know many devastating road fatalities could have easily been avoided if the victims had been wearing a seatbelt.”

Div Supt Ryan said police will also have a strong focus on farm crime across Strathbogie Shire, ranging from thefts from farm houses and sheds, criminal damage and livestock theft.

Farm crime will be a key focus point this year.

“We will work closely with victims of farm crime and Victoria Police’s dedicated farm crime liaison officers to gather intelligence to help detect offenders,” Mr Ryan said.

“We know farm crime is vastly underreported and we implore victims to report this offending to police so we can investigate it thoroughly.

The most recent crime statistics released by the Crime Statistics Agency for the year ending September 2021 depicted several trend rates regarding drug offences and family violence in 2021, such as a 20.3 per cent increase in the total number of family violence incidents in Strathbogie Shire from 153 inci-

dents in 2020 to 184 incidents in 2021.

A 135.5 per cent increase in breach of family violence order offences from 59 offences in 2020 to 139 offences in 2021 has also been recorded, as well a decrease of 20.5 per cent in overall drug offences from 39 offences in 2020 to 31 offences on 2021.

“While it’s very concerning to see a significant increase in family violence in-

cidents in Strathbogie Shire, we know a large majority of these were breach of family violence order offences, which is testament to the great proactive work being done by police in encouraging victims to report these breaches,” Mr Ryan said.

The most recent crime statistics are until September 2021, therefore we won’t know if there has been an increase in family violence and drug-related offences over

the holiday season until the next quarterly crime statistics are released by the Crime Statistics Agency in March.

However, according to Div Supt Ryan, police have consistently seen a spike in family violence incidents during the summer holiday period, with clear increases on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day for the past several years.

“Police will continue to proactively monitor and engage with those members of the community who are subject to family violence orders, particularly over the summer holiday period, in an effort to protect victims and identify breaches,” he said.

“We also continue to engage with local family violence support services to ensure victims of family violence in our community always have somewhere to turn.

“We want victims to know we are here to help.

“It’s really pleasing to see a large drop in the number of drug-related offences in Strathbogie Shire, but we know it’s largely because stay-at-home restrictions and border closures in 2021 meant there was less opportunity for drug-related offending.”

From page 1 Mr Money was a newspaper columnist for 37 years before leaving The Age in 2016 after 50 years in journalism.

He was the inaugural winner of the Melbourne Press Club’s Quill award for Victoria’s best column-writer, an award he won twice.

A multifaceted man, he has written six books, appeared on ABC and commercial radio, designed a best-selling family board game called Holiday and has recently illustrated three Australian authors’ books with original cartoons.

He has become a stand-up comedian, and has performed shows at the 2019 and 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Mr Money delights in exploring the Aussie culture, the language, the quirks that make us uniquely Australian.

One of his recent books, Amazing Aussie Bastards, is a tribute to the indominable eccentric Australian spirit and those who embody it.

He is currently working on a book entitled You’ve Got To Be Joking, inspired by his venture into stage comedy.

Ian Coutts, Australia Day ambassador for Nagambie, is also co-founder and secretary of the Mullagh Wills Foundation.

Mr Coutts’ career in sports marketing and

communications commenced with the North Melbourne Giants in the National Basketball League.

After a brief stint with Fitzroy in the AFL, he started his extensive career with the Carlton Football Club.

Mr Coutts was part of the senior executive team at Carlton for over 12 years in his role as general manager of communications, managing the media and developing communications policies and reputation initiatives for the club.

After two years as the general manager for marketing and communications for a children’s cancer charity, he started his own consulting business, Ian Coutts Communications.

He continues to work for several organisations, primarily in the sporting and not-for-profit sectors.

Mr Coutts is a co-founder and director of the Mullagh Wills Foundation which celebrates the Aboriginal Australian Cricket Team tour of England in 1868 and promotes reconciliation through sport more generally.

He also volunteers for numerous community organisations and acts as an advisor to the board for a range of national charities.

Ex-commando joins Indi battle Wahgunyah g y resident named Liberal candidate for federal election

By STEVE KELLY FORMER Army commando and Wahgunyah resident Ross Lyman has been officially endorsed as the Liberal Party candidate for Indi for the 2022 federal election.

The father of two children launch his campaign on Friday against incumbent independent Helen Haines, Labor’s Nadia David, Greens Party man Benjamin Gilbert, with a Nationals candidate still yet to be announced.

Mr Lyman served in the Australian Army with postings in Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan in the 1990s and following this, his career has spanned agriculture, manufacturing, operations and logistics - particularly in the wine industry.

Agriculture, education, regional development and national security are some of the areas of opportunity Mr Lyman wants to work on if successful at this year’s federal election.

Mr Lyman grew up around viticulture and currently runs a vineyard in Wahgunyah which he said puts him in a good place to understand the challenges faced in agriculture and business in the electorate.

He worked as an executive at Treasury Wine Estates and as a senior executive at McWilliam’s Wines Group in the Riverina.

As a management consultant at KPMG and Ernst & Young, he has worked on large scale state and federal health infrastructure and defence projects.

Draft Streetscape Plans for Euroa, Violet Town, Longwood, Avenel and Strathbogie We’re now seeking feedback on our Draft Streetscape Plans for Euroa, Violet Town, Longwood, Avenel and Strathbogie, which aim to improve the township’s visual appeal and add character.

POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash which occurred in Nagambie last Thursday.

Emergency services were called to Mullers Road about 3.20pm after reports a car had crashed into tree and caught fire.

Crews arrived but were unable to save the driver of the vehicle.

The deceased is a 38-year-old man from Woodend.

The fire was on Mullers Rd and firefighters remained on scene for some time.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash

are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, has dash cam footage, or any other information that could assist police is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Guiding future of our forests

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL THE government is taking the next steps to engage Victorians in determining new conservation, recreation and tourism opportunities in Immediate Protection Areas.

The Immediate Protection Areas − made up of more than 146,000 hectares of state forest located in Mirboo North, Strathbogie Ranges, Central Highlands and East Gippsland were protected from timber harvesting in 2019 due to their precious biodiversity.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio last week announced the membership of the Eminent Panel for Community Engagement, established to lead conversations with Victorian communities on the future care and management of the land.

Bertram Lobert, president of Save Our Strathbogie Forest, said they’re overjoyed Minister D’Ambrosio has announced the formation of the Eminent Panel on Community Consultation.

“The process to permanently protect the Strathbogie Forest (begun in November 2019) can now proceed full steam ahead,” he said.

“While we acknowledge that both Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) and the Eminent Panel still have important work to do, we ask Minister D’Ambrosio to finalise the protection of the forest as a matter of urgency.

“If not completed this year, we urge both the Victorian La-

bor Party and the state opposition to commit to protection of the forest as part of their 2022 election platforms.”

Mr Lobert said the Strathbogie Forest was a very special place.

“Its biodiversity values, particularly as a refuge for a host of native wildlife, are of statewide significance,” he said.

“Recreation and tourism opportunities in the forest are significant, yet largely unrealised.

“We are particularly pleased that Traditional Owners are central to this process.

“We look forward to working with the Eminent Panel and the Taungurung Land and Waters Council in developing a vision for the forest that encourages more visitors, yet protects its ecological and cultural values.”

A representative from the relevant Traditional Owner group and two other experts have been appointed to join chairperson Karen Cain on the panel.

The panel will work with the VEAC that is currently undertaking scientific assessments in these areas.

Mrs D’Ambrosio said the Immediate Protection Areas are one of the largest environmental initiatives in our state’s history and it’s crucial we get our engagement right to give as many Victorians as possible a say in how we care for these forests.

“The partnership we’re developing with Traditional Owners signifies an important step forward for self determi-

nation,” she said.

“This is truly exciting to be a part of and I encourage Victorians to contribute to the conversation.”

Formally recognised Traditional Owner groups relevant to each region will be appointed to the panel during the engagement process for each ‘immediate protection area’ on their country.

This new governance model was developed in partnership with the Traditional Owners and supports self-determination.

Mellissa Wood, chairperson of VEAC, and Nicola Pero, chief executive officer at Food and Fibre Gippsland, have been selected to join the panel.

VEAC is already assessing the environmental, recreation and other values in immediate protection areas in Mirboo North and Strathbogie Ranges.

Work in the Central Highlands and East Gippsland will start in mid-2022.

The panel will present a report and recommendations to the government on Mirboo North and Strathbogie Ranges in mid-2022.

Community engagement on Central Highlands and East Gippsland will begin later in 2022.

Since 2019 the Victorian Government has added more than 250,000 hectares of protected forests in Victoria - including 96,000 hectares of immediate protection areas, 65,106 hectares for the new Central West National Parks and 90,000 hectares of old growth.

Keeping showmen and women on the road SUPPORT of $8.3 million is now available to provide travelling showmen and women assistance with showmen’s guild membership fees and rental relief.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia, David Littleproud and Nationals Senate Leader and Senator for Victoria, Bridget McKenzie said the government will be working with the Victorian Showmen’s Guild to administer up to $7.8 million of payments to contribute to the rental costs for travelling showmen and women associated with their participation at agricultural shows in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 financial years.

Up to $500,000 is also available to contribute to the operational costs of travelling show businesses by supporting a moratorium and/or refund on showmen’s guild membership fees for the 2021 and 2022 calendar years.

“The last two years have been tough for many of us, but travelling businesses who visit agricultural shows have been hit very hard,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Because of the restrictions from COVID-19, many showmen and women have been completely

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL STRATHBOGIE Shire Council has released draft streetscape plans for Euroa, Strathbogie, Longwood, Violet Town and Avenel for community feedback.

The release of the draft plans follows an extensive community engagement program to ensure community input was at the heart of the draft plans.

Edwina Thompson, Longwood resident, architect, director of About Architecture whose office are located in Euroa and in charge of the project, said it was “great to have heard from the community through the online feedback forum created by the shire”.

“The level of feedback and the insight the community has had on what will improve their respective towns will be invaluable in finalising the concept designs which we will do in the coming weeks,” she said.

“We hope the draft plans have presented an optimistic vision for the future streetscape design in our area.”

Mrs Thomson said the success of any streetscape project hinged heavily on presenting and representing the character and the identity of the

“It is crucial that local community groups, local artists and local knowledge are involved in further developing the designs through signage, art and furniture.

Nationals Senate Leader and Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said the funding would have a flow-on effect to regional communities.

“Agricultural shows attribute up to 75 per cent of their ticket sales to the attractions that travelling show businesses provide,” Senator McKenzie said.

“These events are estimated to contribute over $1 billion to the Australian economy, attract over six million patrons and enlist 50,000 volunteers each year.

“But more than that, agricultural shows are a great day out for regional Australians where distance, drought, bushfires, floods and the COVID-19 pandemic have made life more difficult.”

Changing demographics of the Strathbogie Shire A RECENT shortage in the availability of housing to either buy or rent in Euroa, may have prompted many of the long-time local residents to ask why, and what is happening to the local demographics.

It has been recently noted in the various forms of media that many people of retirement age have been selling up in Melbourne and making a sea-change or a tree-change, and it appears some of these may have moved to the Strathbogie Shire.

In Euroa during 1921 there were 4.55 people per dwelling, and this has fallen steadily over the past 100 years until by 2016 the number was only 2.08.

While Euroa and some other smaller locations had numbers above 40 per cent, others like Seymour, Tatura and Wangaratta were all in the mid to high 20 percent range, and others were in the 30s.

The Census data was displayed in five year age brackets, and when percentages of people in the “85 and above” group was looked at Euroa had the 34th highest result out of the other 733 locations in Victoria.

For this particular age group, the key focus was most likely on things such as the quality of

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes an annual estimation of the population breakdown by age and sex, for a broad range of regions across Australia.

When comparing all of the boroughs and shires throughout Victoria for the percentage of their population above 65 years of age, the Strathbogie Shire is the equal fourth highest behind the borough of Queenscliff, and the shires of Central Goldfields and East Gippsland.

All of these areas are situated in regional locations across the state, and this would seem to indicate that more and more people are retiring to sea-change and tree-change regional areas.

For the year 2020, the ABS data shows that out of 462 town/cities, Euroa has the sixth highest percentage of people aged 65 and above.

The highest is French Island, followed by Paynesville, Point Lonsdale-Queenscliff, Port Arlington and Lakes Entrance.

Interestingly, all of these first five places are sea-change locations, with Euroa the next highest with 32.1 per cent of the population being over the age of 65.

The ABS data for Euroa shows that in 2020 there are a total of 2,113 people (or 32.1 per cent of the population of Euroa) in this 65+ grouping forecast, and located

within the township of Euroa.

This includes 273 people in the 80-84 Year group and 271 people in the 85+ years group.

Interestingly, it would also appear that people from smaller locations around Euroa are moving into the township as they get older, compounding the demands on existing support services.

APART from the fact that it would be problematical as to whether the Strathbogie Shire has the right to spend ratepayers money on anything with any kind of religious connotation the Christmas display at the Binney and Brock streets roundabout could only be described as a dismal absurdity.

There he was in five-ply cut out, Old Father Christmas in his red and white northern hemisphere garb with a couple of reindeer frolicking about on what was 30 plus degree heat days.

This would have to be the perfect example of our national inferiority complex - our national cultural cringe.

Surely we could expect something better than this from the shire’s brains trust?

Pharmacists at breaking point THE Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) is calling for patience and understanding from the general public amid ongoing rapid antigen tests (RAT) shortages.

Rossa O’Connell, pharmacist at Euroa Pharmacy HealthSave, said he was appalled by the situation.

“We haven’t had any antigen tests since before Christmas, and we order them every day, and they don’t come, the government is telling everybody to get them, but there’s none in Australia,” he said.

“So what’s the point to keep on telling pharmacist to get it when we can’t.

“The other thing is that the bigger companies seem to get them before we do like Coles, Woolworths or Priceline.

“It is so very hard for us in a small town to get access to them.

“I have got them on order and they should be here by the end of the month, but we’re just waiting on a delivery.”

Extreme stock shortages and unprecedented demand continues to place significant strain on pharmacists and pharmacy staff.

PSA national president Chris Freeman stressed how challenging these past few weeks have been for the pharmacy workforce as a result of RAT shortages, combined with the commencement of childhood vaccinations and the booster rollout.

vaccinating people against the virus, and even more importantly, allowing them to focus on their core function, medicine safety.”

Prof Freeman said members had reported receiving on average, four calls a minute in relation to RATs. “This is simply not sustainable,” he said.

“Governments keep telling people to get tested, and people are trying to do the right thing, but there is still a lot of confusion in the community.

“PSA and other health bodies were stressing the importance of securing RAT supply and establishing effective distribution networks with government over six months ago.

“Antigen tests are also available and being distributed through government testing clinics, free of charge, and I implore Australians to consider these services in order to alleviate pressure on our already-stretched pharmacist workforce, until stock shortages are solved.”

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL THE government has announced plans to reduce speed limits to 80kph on roads across country Victoria - a move slammed by the Nationals deputy leader Steph Ryan.

Ms Ryan described the policy this week as “lazy” and said the Andrews Government should focus on fixing country Victoria’s crumbling road network.

She also said if elected to government this year the Nationals would reinstate the successful Country Roads and Bridges Program.

The program provided funding to rural councils to upgrade local roads and was ditched by the government when they were elected in 2014.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said council manages 2207km of roads that’s 1470km of unsealed and 737km of sealed.

She said on top of this they look after 521 bridges and culverts.

“We welcome any funding that could make our roads safer and assist with our significance maintenance and improvement efforts,” Cr Binks said.

ANGRY: The Nationals deputy leader Steph Ryan said the government shouldn’t be reducing speed limits, but actually work on fixing local roads.

Ms Ryan said “it’s not rocket science: fix country roads, and you will save country lives”.

“Labor cut the road maintenance budget by 25 per cent

last year and now, because of crumbling roads and potholes, they plan to drop speed limits on country roads to 80kph,” Ms Ryan said.

“This is a lazy and arrogant

decision by the government which demands cars be roadworthy but does nothing to ensure roads are car worthy.

“Reducing speed limits on regional roads doesn’t fill pot-

holes, doesn’t fill cracks and certainly doesn’t stop roads completely falling apart, it just means the government has to do less.

“At the same time as cut-

ting funding for road maintenance in country areas, Labor is pouring $52 billion into four transport projects in metropolitan Melbourne - including six billion which has just been wasted on poor project management.”

Ms Ryan said the government announced it supported the change after it was recommended by a parliamentary committee.

“The committee that recommended this change had a Labor majority. The recommendation was vigorously opposed by opposition MPs so any attempt to sell this as a bipartisan initiative is dishonest,” she said.

“I find it galling that in its response to the recommendation that speed limits be reduced, the Andrews Government acknowledged that country communities would be concerned by the changes but said it would “educate” us on the risks of speed and links to road trauma.

“Instead of patronising us with an education campaign about risks we well understand, the government would be well advised to invest some of our taxes into properly fixing the roads we rely on to get to work, school and to conduct our daily business.”

Entrepreneur’s vision coming to fruition for Nagambie

By DIANE GRANT THE forecast for Nagambie’s future is bright and is going strong as parts of the town can be seen thanks to the auspices of entrepreneur Gerry Ryan and his varied interests.

The most recent being the Waterways Lifestyle Village at the northern end of the town, and his building of a large factory in the Industrial court area to provide a facility to build larger houses in the river area behind the Village.

In the 1960s a famous saying

by American President John F Kennedy resounded around the globe “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”.

These words exemplify Gerry Ryan’s commitment to his business enterprises, his community support and his recreational pursuits.

He has not only been a successful businessman in the area but has joined in with community events and had ideas and vision of how the area and town’s attractions could be expanded and known.

He was instrumental in having the Goulburn Explorer 49 seater River Cruise boat coast around the local waterways, and he and his family also had the vision to enhance Mitchelton Winery by adding a motel,

One of the more recent establishments he has had a hand in was the Nagambie Information Centre building, the Ma Forbes café next door and the Nagambie Brewery and Distillery.

He also had a hand in the Tallarook Hotel.

He has also sponsored the Jayco Herald Sun Tour cycling event at Mitchelton for many years, which has sadly been postponed until 2023.

Mr Ryan has been one of the largest benefactors to the town of Nagambie and surrounding district.

He is a well known Melbourne business who forged a successful industry with his Jayco Caravans and he adopted Nagambie when he moved to a stud farm just outside the town about 17 years ago.

His name first came to the fore in the town when he saved the “Chinaman’s Bridge Caravan Park” in the early 2000s and turned it into a modern leisure park with cabins, and recrea-

tional facilities.

His generosity also became known in 2006 when he supported the Nagambie and District Lions Club Inc by donating them a new caravan for their catering ventures.

He also assisted the Nagambie Recreation Reserve in a practical way and on Australia Day 2018 came along with the Melbourne Cup that his part owned horse “Americain’ had won and raised funds for a local cause that day by having his photo taken with the cup and locals.

Mr Ryan has supported many local groups or individuals over the years but has always emphasised “that if a group or person is willing to provide financial input or work in kind support, I would be only too pleased to support it if it is viable”.

“I am not willing to just give handouts - I am not a cash cow” were some of the words he used at a meeting a while ago.

Mr Ryan has championed the town and region and has made it a premier centre for recreational pursuits, liveability, employment, investment, tourist visiting and supporting major events.

Mr Ryan’s visions have brought Nagambie and district into the 21st century.

He is to be thanked and congratulated on all the enterprises he has developed in our region.

Apostle John (`68AD) too, was given end-age visions, that he didn’t understand but wrote (Rev.22) for a generation that would. Culture and politics today, are conforming to ancient predictions, which should convict and challenge us, because Gods’ Word is a two-edged sword, ever warning and ever promising; that’s His blessed mercy and grace toward mankind.

Be urged not to harden our hearts toward Him, because His-storys’ trajectory is unchangeable and human rebellion will become more entrenched. God won’t permit evil to continue as millions of innocent souls wait for Justice, (Psalm 37, Rom.12:19) and His enduring patience (2 Peter 3:9) for 2000+ years, is drawing to a close as foretold.

Contrary to here-say, there’s abundant evidence of God, but ‘blind and deaf’, many remain unseeing, unhearing. (2 Cor.4:3-4, 3:14, Rom10:17) Hundreds once witnessed Jesus and His healing miracles, but still didn’t choose to trust. (John 12:37) Genuine seekers of Gods’ awesome Presence will find amazing grace and new joy in life. Someday_ Jesus is returning for His children, not opposers. “Everyone who acknowledges Me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before My Father in Heaven.” (Matt. 10:32, Rom.10:17) There’s nothing more profoundly important than spiritual wealth. Ask any Christian, if they regret meeting Jesus. Thousands of personal testimonials are available to encourage others on their spiritual walk. Everyone needs a Saviour, to exchange our inner darkness for His Light. (Isaiah 5:20) Jesus is the gracious and compassionate Son, who once publicly defended a woman accused of adultery but privately forgave her and said, ‘go, and sin no more’. (John 8:1-11) Is He calling you?: then answer, talk, pray and ask! (Matt.7:7, 6:33) Heaven is reward for forgiven people, not so-called ‘good, decent, nice’ people; because no-one is deemed worthy before being redeemed. (Rom.3:23-26) Mercy before Grace. Holiness before happiness. Forgiveness before blessing. “God blesses those who do not turn away because of Me”. (Matt.11:6) Are you teachable or unreachable?

Fun times at Goulburn Valley Libraries A RANGE of interactive and educative events and workshops will take place at Goulburn Valley libraries in Violet Town, Euroa and Nagambie.

Craft and Coffee gets underway on February 1 at Corner Bookmarks at Nagambie.

Drawing is at Euroa on Tuesday, February 8, and Dream Catchers at Violet Town on Tuesday, February 22.

Jenny Wyllie, operations manager at Goulburn Valley Libraries, said they are pleased to be able to welcome people back to a range of programs in the libraries.

“Programs such as Craft and Coffee provide an opportunity for people to connect with each other - often the craft is secondary to the social interaction that these sessions provide,” she said.

She also said libraries are the hub of the community, where

people can come in to read a paper, use our free computers or just have a chat with a staff member.

“We are often the first place people think of when they need computer help, or even just a cool place on a hot day,” Ms Wyllie said.

“Our children’s programs help children become familiar with the library, have fun and enjoy books and stories.

“Reading and story-telling promotes language, literacy and brain development.

“Libraries have been particularly important over the past two years as we have continued to serve our communities through click and collect services, as well as providing eBooks, online story times for kids, and take-home craft packs to keep kids occupied during holidays.”

Rhyme and Story Time is on

the first Thursday of the month at Nagambie, the third Thursday at Violet Town and every Friday at Euroa.

At the Euroa Library on 62 Binney Street, you will be able to come for a “Story Time” atelier, which will provide children and their caregivers an opportunity to share and experience the joy of reading.

This session will be held on January 28 at 10am.

A “Story Time” event animated with songs, rhymes, stories and craft will also take place at the Nagambie library on 352 High Street at 10.30am on February 3.

Another “Story Time” will happen at the Violet Town library on Cowslip Street at 10.30am on February 17.

Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research undertook electrofishing surveys to assess fish populations and remove non-native fish in the area.

The Australian Trout Foundation and Native Fish Australia also held angling days at the site to remove and translocate non-native fish.

The project was funded by the Victorian Government’s Biodiversity On-Ground Action Icon Species Grant Program, which aims to protect and conserve some of the state’s most endangered species.

THE critically endangered Spotted Tree Frog has been given a strong chance at survival thanks to a team of experts and community members working to protect populations within the High Country.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) led a team of 13 organisations to successfully repair a mountain stream barrier to reduce the threat of nonnative fish-eating Spotted Tree Frog eggs and tadpoles.

DELWP natural environment program officer Dan Pendavingh said reducing non-native fish numbers at important Spotted Tree Frog sites was a vital step in helping the species survive.

Euroa Music Festival postponed THE annual Euroa Music Festival, which was set to take place on March 26 this year, has been postponed by one of its organisers, Adam Palmer, due to the current COVID-19 situation.

The festival was a huge success for its first edition last year so the decision was a hard one to take.

“We’ve had to make the

painful decision to reschedule the Euroa Music Festival,” Mr Palmer shared on the Euroa Music Festival social media.

“It’s a decision that we haven’t taken lightly.

“As a small not for profit organisation into just our second year of hosting this community driven festival, we are not in the position

to be taking on substantial risks in a very uncertain environment.

“It’s our plan to build this festival and to make it a sustainable ongoing annual event.

“By pushing ahead we believe this action will be detrimental to our goal.”

The team behind the Euroa Music Festival said they

were optimistic they would be in a much better position to deliver a great show without the current distractions in the spring of 2022.

“We are communicating with all artist agents/management and our local stakeholders at the current time,” Mr Palmer said.

“Ideally we’d love to be able to maintain the line-up

we have assembled and are working behind the scenes to make this happen.

“We’ll be back in touch once the new date is finalised.”

The new dates could be during late October or early November.

“A big thank you to all of the artists and their representitives for working with

us on the new date, and to our sponsors for their unwavering support,” Mr Palmer said.

Patrons already purchased tickets will be valid for the rescheduled event.

Beware of compromised structure of road

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL A SECTION of road infrastructure has collapsed underneath the surface on the corner of Scott and Garrett streets in Euroa.

If the top layer collapses, it could cause a hole about 3ft wide and at least 1-2ft deep.

A Department of Transport spokesperson said “keeping everyone safe on our roads is always our highest priority’’.

“Our crews are out every day inspecting, assessing and maintaining the Hume region road network to ensure it is safe for all road users,” they said.

“We will continue to monitor the site at the corner of Scott and Garrett streets, Euroa and complete repairs as necessary.”

Crews attended Scott Street in Euroa (EuroaShepparton Road) on January 13 after receiving a report of a small hole (about 20cm x 20cm) in the road near Garrett Street.

This issue has likely been exacerbated by recent rain.

Repairs were complete, and the site was rechecked on Tuesday, January 18, when some further minor subsidence was noted.

The site is being regularly monitored, and further works to top up the pothole will occur in the

Department of Transport crews attended to a similar pothole at a different location on Euroa-Shepparton Road last year, requiring a few visits before stabilising.

Recycling opportunities for Victorian towns AS of last week, Victorian Government grants of up to $500,000 are available to upgrade regionally significant resource recovery centres for recyclable materials including cardboard, plastic, paper, glass and mixed recyclables.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said this investment in regional recycling infrastructure, creating local circular economies and regional jobs was welcomed.

“Council welcomes any funding that will assist us to improve ways to ensure more and more waste is being diverted from landfill,” Cr Binks said.

“The announcement of the first round of the Victorian Government’s $40.9 million Regional Recycling Fund is exciting news as we will be eligible to apply for funding through this grant process.

“Council last year voted unanimously to declare a Climate Emergency and therefore this is one of the

driving factors in ensuring we are doing all we can as an organisation to contribute to improving our natural environment.”

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio today opened round one of the $40.9 million Regional Recycling Fund that will strengthen regional Victoria’s recycling network.

“We’re making a significant investment in the state’s recycling system by creating industries that have a positive impact on climate change through reducing landfill,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

“These regional facilities are the building blocks for a robust recycling network that will drive current and future material recovery in regional Victoria, supporting the creation of regional circular economies and jobs.”

The $10 million available for round one of the program can also be used to fund infrastructure investment that

will help smaller facilities operate at a larger scale.

Future funding will support further upgrades and new regional material recovery facilities and will be informed by the development of Regional Circular Economy Plans.

These plans will bring together regional councils and identify local recycling opportunities that optimise Victoria’s resource recovery and transfer station network.

Local councils and private operators are invited to apply.

Private operators will be asked to contribute $3 for every $1 received through the program.

This fund is part of the Government’s $515 million investment towards delivering the biggest ever transformation of the state’s waste and recycling industry, including major reforms like the new four service household recycling system and the container deposit scheme.

Zelma notches up 90th birthday ZELMA Collier was born in 1932 in Euroa, Victoria.

She grew up in Nelson Street and started school at Euroa public school at the age of six, in 1938.

She began working at Euroa radio service and then began her employment at Burtons of Euroa.

Zelma met her future husband Neil and they were married in 1955 at Saint John’s Catholic Church Euroa.

They had a Mobil Petrol agency in Euroa.

Zelma and Neil had four children Lynne, Rodney, Andrew and Mark.

Zelma was involved in St Johns Convent Mothers club and enjoyed the fun raising events and friendships she experienced whilst being involved.

They left Euroa in 1973 to begin a new chapter.

They purchased a non offical post office and exchange in Goolgowi, NSW.

The community embraced them and they enjoyed 21 years while they were there.

Zelma and Neil were Justice of the peace, sworn in not long after residing at Goolgowi.

Zelma was president of the arts council in Goolgowi.

She won a Australia Day merit award from Carathool Council in recognition of her fundraising for a swimming pool.

This was a great achievement and her grandchildren have swam in the pool since.

Zelma was also a member of the CWA. She also opened up a tea room called Zels Boiling Billy Tea Rooms at Goolgowi in 1992 with all sorts of visitors calling in and signing the visitors book.

Zelma and her daughter in law Judith were featured in a magazine regarding Zels Boiling Billy Tea Rooms.

Neil and herself returned

to Euroa in 1994, to Castle Court.

The National Archives, located in Canberra, had an exhibition, in 1998, about the importance’s of the old postal services.

Zelma’s voice could be heard through a headset telling a story about the exchange.

Neil and Zelma ecstatically travelled to Canberra to see the exhibition about their post office and to hear her voice.

The exhibition travelled around Australia for four years.

Signed, sealed and delivered, when the post office was king.

Zelma and Neil were involved in The Cancer Council and the Blind Society in Euroa as Zelma was a cancer survivor.

While she was involved in CWA she won a state award for the story ‘Where Do I

Go to from Here’ which was about the manual exchange going automatic.

She won a writing award at Batemans bay while spending time there.

Zelma’s husband Neil suffered a stroke and she cared for him for many years.

Neil sadly passed away in 2018.

Over the years Zelma has experienced so much of life, the ups and the downs, but she’s still standing at 90.

What a remarkable woman.

Her family want to congratulate and wish Zelma a very happy birthday.

Fire hazard at Polly McQuinns

By CLEMENCE CARAYOL THE beloved swimming spot just out of Euroa, Polly McQuinns, has been described by tourists and locals as dangerous because it’s still covered in high grass, which represents a potential fire hazard and a snake-friendly environment.

Local Bill Earle said he was concerned by the situation.

“You’ll notice that the grass around the picnic tables has been slashed but the rest of it that hasn’t, in my opinion is a fire haz-

ard, not to mention the snake factor,” he said.

David Hamilton, Strathbogie CFA captain, said it was dangerous.

“Sadly the fire risk is extreme in all of our public lands at the moment,” he said.

“Considering that the two townships of highest fire danger rating in the CFA Region 22 are Strathbogie and Ruffy, the state of all public land in these regions is appalling.

“As a brigade we have found people lighting camp fires at Polly’s on days of total fire ban.

“And considering that the flame height would be twice that of the grass, the combination of both these factors together would be a recipe for disaster.”

During the last five years, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) has completed seven planned burns totalling 2439 hectares in the Strathbogie State Forest to reduce the bushfire risk to the community and the environment.

As part of the Joint Fuel Management Program, slashing is undertaken each year along

the Seven Creeks Reserve at Strathbogie Township to reduce the fire risk to the houses in Strathbogie township which abut the reserve.

Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger Andrew Sawicki said “Parks Victoria regularly slashes the area around the picnic tables and benches at Polly McQuinns’, and at other sites we manage, so people can use them.”

“Areas can be nominated for fuel management work through Forest Fire Management Victoria and the CFA,” Mr Sawicki said.

Water theft enforcement ramps up GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) and Lower Murray Water (LMW) are renewing their focus on the prevention, detection and enforcement of water theft.

GMW’s water use compliance and enforcement coordinator Chris Dalton said GMW has strengthened compliance and enforcement.

This has resulted in 25 successful water theft prosecutions in 2020/21, while the number of customers who took water without authorisation and the amount of water taken from 2019/20 to 2020/21 - has halved.

“We have also been educating customers on managing their entitlements and proactively monitoring customer account balances,” Mr Dalton said.

“The detection of even small volumes of water theft has led to a swift compliance and enforcement response.

DON’T BE A DRIP: GMW is clamping down on water theft and made 25 successful prosecutions of water theft last year.

“We have increased inspections to detect water theft, including checking customers whose usage exceeded their entitlement in the previous irrigation season.”

Meanwhile, LMW’s renewed focus has resulted in a significant reduction of unauthorised take with the volume reducing by more than 87 per cent and the number of customers who took water without authorisation reducing by more than 65

per cent in the past two years.

LMW managing director Anthony Couroupis said the compliance and enforcement measures taken, alongside the continuing education of customers, is vital to ensure equity for all water users.

“LMW has been implementing clear compliance and enforcement measures as well as closely monitoring all accounts and alerting customers

when their account balance is heading towards being negative,” he said.

“This proactive monitoring means we can act quickly where there is water theft - also known as metered use without allocation.

“Our customers are telling us they want those doing the wrong thing to be held accountable, they want a fair system and our renewed compliance and enforcement efforts provide that.”

Mr Dalton and Mr Couroupis said this focus would increase in 2022 as GMW and LMW introduced on-the-spot fines for water theft - this means that GMW and LMW can issue fines (known as Penalty Infringement Notes or PINs) without having to go to court.

The maximum penalty for an individual is $2181 and $10,904 for a body corporate and if the matter proceeds to court, much larger fines apply.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB LADIES ON a beautiful Wednesday morning 11 Ladies played a game of Stroke in perfect conditions.

The winner of A, B & C Grades was Moz Fowler with 75 net.

Winner of the 9 Ball competition was Annette Mills with 36 net.

18 hole balls went to Moz 75 net, Anne Burns 77 net and Jane Bow 80 net.

9 hole balls went to Annette 36 net, Moz 37 net and Anne 37.5 net.

NTP on the 8th was Moz and on the 13th Annette.

Chicken Run Results Thursday 20th January We had 30 players enjoy beautiful summer conditions to play a game of Stableford on the front 9.

The winner was Dave Love with 22pts and runner up on a C/B was Tim Gleeson

also with 22 pts.

NTP on the 8th was Shayne Kimball.

MEN A two person Ambrose was played on Saturday to make way for Nagambie to host the first round of summer pennant.

12 pairs of men and 2 pairs of women tackled the course in what only could be described as near perfect weather.

The winning pair on the men’s side with the amazing score of 64-4.25-59.75 net went to Jeremy Ezard and Shayne Kimball, at one stage during the round the fire brigade was nearly called to put out the fire that was Shayne Kimball’s game.

Runners up paring the course with 72-5.75-66.25 were David Love and Shaun Bryant, once again doing well to complete the course without choking one another.

A top three finish went to the enthusiastic Michael Mensfeld and Daniel Hall proving they are on the march and ready to do big things.

The best score for the women were Ronda Richards and Jill Rankin bashing their way to 90-13.5-76.5.

The nearest the pins went to Michael Mensfeld ripping it out over the trees and bringing it back to the green with precision on the 3rd, ‘the bullet’ Wayne Le Cerf with the crosshairs dialled in on the 13th and Terry Clonan taking home the 16th.

Next week’s golf is a sponsored event with the annual running of the ‘Water Boy’ Cup. Stableford will be played with Lindsay Hall on office duty and Wayne Le Cerf in the bar.

STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

By ROB BROWNLEE GOLF on Tuesday, January 18 was again a small field playing.

Stableford was the game, a little different with the ladies hitting off the men’s tee on the second and the men hitting off the new Championship tee.

Reports the majority handled the hole well with no one requiring the survival gear left in case of trouble, however one player playing in the scribes group who shall remain nameless made the carry but ended up by the fence around the oval.

For his second shot he proceeded to hit his ball into its thought a neighbour’s chook pen.

Needless to say that ball wasn’t recovered.

His playing partners all recorded three stableford points on their cards.

The winner with 42 points was a new member Ed Harding; obviously his handicap will be immediately adjusted.

A lineball was won by Greg Roberts.

The club kept its ball for nearest the pins on the 4th and 15th Ed Harding got the

8th and Kieth Seeber got lucky on the17th.

Stableford was played on Saturday, January 22 and again a small field took cards.

It is thought the weather may have deterred some players or holidays are still on.

Chris Bennett set the pace returning a card with five birdies, but that wasn’t enough to win the Dinner voucher at the Euroa Hotel , that going to Kristen Moore on a countback with 40 points.

Lineballs were won by Chris Bennett (40 points), Eleanor Barnes (38 points) ,Fran Kearney (37 points), and Ryley Mc Donald (34 points).

Benalla overpowers a depleted Euroa

By MARK BORTHWICK WITH Covid still playing havoc with local sport, two matches involving Euroa teams were cancelled this week.

Euroa Lawn played at home to Benalla Lawn with Benalla bringing a strong team.

Julie Brooke and Kim Saxon just went down in a tie breaker then Kim followed it up with Rowena Ellis getting the same result.

The set of the day however went to Rowena and Caid Miller who stole the show with an 8-5 win.

Benalla got up by 27.

St Pauls travelled to Avenel and with Annabelle Hayes and Lily Meehan got off to a flying start with an 8-2.

Jake Hill and Craig O’Bree smashed out an 8-1 paving the way for an 8 to 1 sets victory.

Moglonemby also played at Avenel with a hard fought afternoon kicked off with Sue Vaughan and Mary Kelly 8-7 and Michael Nolan and Mal Anderson the same score line.

Michael kept his form going combining well with Dublin Anderson 8-3.

And then Mogs won two mixed sets but went down by the narrowest of

margins one game.

In Division B Euroa Ranges hosted Tatong and with Harrison Mills and Elise Durkin had a good win 8-6 and then Harrison backed it up with Lachlan Sands 8-2 to record the only winning sets.

Tatong went on to win by 22.

Parkrun attracts tourist entrants THE Euroa parkrun had another successful week on Saturday, January 22 and saw 33 participants, with parkrun tourists from Gardiners Creek (Burwood) & Ballarat parkruns.

A grade cricketers open game with a wicket and finish with a win

Defeated Shepp United - 19, S. Dadallage 5/23, R. Hill 2/18, F. Ellis 1/20 WHAT a perfect day it was for cricket with captain Carl Norton losing the toss and Euroa sent into bowl first with Mitchell Walters taking the first wicket of the day with a spectacular ball to dismiss Shepp United’s opening batsman.

All bowlers for Euroa were on point with Ben Milliken taking his first wicket for the club in 2 years since his last game.

Sham Dadallage bowled unreal taking 5/23 from 8 overs and finishing his spell on a hat trick. Unfortunately for Sham, Fraser took the last wicket of the innings in the next over, so Sham will have to wait the week out before he attempts to take a hattrick.

Ryan Hill also worked in partnership with Sham, bowling really well to see Shepparton Untied bowled out for 119.

Euroa opened the batting with Josh Roberston slapping the ball over cover for four runs in the first over before seeing himself snicking off to second slip for four runs.

Sham was giving out LBW

for 0 runs and two new batsman to the crease Vaughan Kirk and Fraser Ellis who steadied the ship and had a game winning partnership of 65 runs before Kirk was given out after he was found to be LBW. Andrew Squires joined Fraser Ellis at the crease, Ellis also finding himself LBW. Ryan Hill joined Squires at the cease and faced 2 balls while Squires took care of the game, hitting the winning runs for Euroa.

Big thanks to Lorraine and Kirrily for scoring and to the ground crew of Glen & Pete for their efforts in making the ground and pitch available in fairly trying COVID impacted conditions.

Euroa A Grade takes on Tatura at the Friendlies next round and will be hoping to keep the momentum going.

OVER 60 CRICKET Ballarat V Euroa THE Euroa over 60’s cricketers travelled to C. J. Brown Oval No1 in Ballarat to take on the locals.

Sadly the trip was unsuccessful.

Ballarat won the toss and invited Euroa to bat.

Euroa struggled and lost early wickets to finally put up 81 runs after batting the 40 overs.

Tony Courtin hit out for 15; Peter Burns from Merton got 14, Peter Morley 12 and Mark

Ambrose 10.

The Ballarat boys belted the Euroa attack for 168 runs by losing only one wicket.

Peter Burns was again the successful bowler with 1/24.

Next game is against Richmond in a fortnight.

SPORT - SCOREBOARD BOWLS AVENEL BOWLS CLUB MIDWEEK PENNANT DIVISION five were on the road again, travelling to Colbinabbin for its round nine match in GMBR midweek pennant.

Given that the match was played on Colbinabbin’s green and that they are in the top two, it was a good effort for Avenel going down by only five shots overall, 13 - 42 to Avenel 1 - 37.

Ruth Underwood, Graham Lewis, Nyoli Bell, Graeme Toy (s) were seven down on end 20. Over the remaining five ends they rallied to score eight shots to Colbinabbin’s one to draw the game 21 all.

Marion Gittus, Joyce White, Glen Bell, George Pedler (s) scored six shots over the last three ends after being eleven shots down on end 22.

A good run home, but not enough to take the win from Colbinabbin going down 16 -21.

Next Tuesday Avenel division five have a bye.

Division two played away at Seymour in its round nine match.

Ladder leaders Seymour were always going to be tough to beat, however Noel Slater’s rink managed a draw to save a whitewash by Seymour.

Avenel 1- 58 lost to Seymour 15 - 71.

Fay Hateley, Grace Kenworthy, Rob Kemp, Noel Slater (s) were two shots down at the break. Winning eight of the last 11 ends saw them catch Seymour but not overtake them resulting in a 20 all draw.

Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) managed to stay in touch with Seymour in the first

half with the scores even five times in the first eleven ends.

An 11 to seven shot second half win by Seymour secured them a six shot win 27 -21.

Rusty Schwab, Dennis McGregor, Pam Pedder, Spud Furletti (s) were also involved in a close tussle, but were also beaten in the second half going down 17 - 24.

In round 10, division two play at home against Kyabram.

WEEKEEND PENNANT Division three played away at Stanhope in what was a winnable match for Avenel.

Both Stanhope and Avenel had two winning rinks but Stanhope won the all-important shot count by nine, and therefore the match, 14 - 102 to Avenel 4 - 93.

Ruth Underwood, Jake Wall, Howard Geldard, Noel Slater (s) won only four ends in the first half and were four shots down at the break.

In a second half surge they more than doubled their score restricting Stanhope to four winning ends, all single shot wins.

A 21 - 17 shot win for Avenel.

Nyoli Bell, Kate Donovan, Grace Kenworthy, Brett McDonald (s) had a slight lead of four on end 20.

Then they scored a three followed by a seven to give them a healthy lead of fourteen. However, the Stanhope lads weren’t done and retaliated with eleven shots in the last three ends.

But Avenel had enough shots up to win by three, 31 - 28.

Ruth King, Jason Toy, Pam Pedder, Spud Furletti (s) in another close game with the scores 16 all on end 20, Avenel scored a four on end 21 to give them the lead.

But Stanhope won the last

four ends and the game 20 23.

Donna Rowley, James Wall, Dennis McGregor, Jenny Furletti (s) were as many as nineteen shots down against a very strong Stanhope rink.

With a good rev up by skip Jenny Furletti, they doubled their score over the last seven ends to decrease the losing margin to 13 shots, 21 - 34.

The next game for division 3 is at home against Mooroopna.

Division 6 South travelled to Seymour for their round 9 match. Due to some last minute with drawls, three division 6 South players were elevated up to Division 3 leaving division 6 South three players short.

Seymour had a solid win 16 - 87 to Avenel 0 - 51.

Mary Black, Robyn Hyland, Graeme Toy (s) lost 18 - 24 but playing one bowler short it was a good effort to remain in touch.

Avenel won 11 of the first eighteen ends and had a slender lead until Seymour scored a five on end 19 to propel them into the lead and hold on for the six shot win.

Marion Gittus, Graham Lewis, Sonia Jones (sub) Glen Bell (s) were very competitive until Seymour scored a six on end 19 and then again on end 24 to claim the win 32 - 21.

Ron Harrison, Norm Billingsley, Joyce White, George Pedler (s) were under the pump from the get go being nineteen down at the break.

An improved second half with the scores at seven apiece gained some credibility but the damage was done

in the first half.

A convincing win to Seymour 12 - 31.

Avenel division six South have a bye next round.

Last Sunday’s chicken run sponsored by Mayfair Drapes was won by Bill, Dennis and Donna.

VIOLET TOWN BOWLS CLUB PENNANT RESULTS AFTER being ladder leaders following wins against Rushworth, Seymour and Avenel respectively, losses to Dookie then Colbinabbin returned us to third on the ladder before the break; then a bye saw us slip down to fourth spot prior to last week’s game.

Last Tuesday we played Euroa on their green with an early & cooler start.

We did win 12-2, 56-50, A Smith, G Crawford, L Russell-Jones, D Underwood (S) def R Noble 38-18, L Heckenberg, G Faux, D Taylor, P Naughton (S) lt G Andrews 18-32.

CLUB GAMES Club Championship games are running at present.

The Ladies game was played Sunday 16th, in humid and hot conditions.

Twenty five ends were played and it really was a battle between the novice bowler, Laurell Heckenberg and the new “old-timer”, Leanne Russell-Jones.

This was noted to have been a great game, with Laurell leading on more than one occasion, proving to be

a tough opponent.

At 20-21 down, two 4’s got Leanne over the line, winning result being 25-21.

After a false start the week before Sunday 23rd saw 3 games played, and while not a winner on the card we were proud to see new bowler Garry Faux do well in hot conditions.

We hope to complete Round 2 by Thursday, in order to complete Round 3 next Sunday.

SOCIAL Weather permitting, we see a new round of Jack Attack commence this Thursday night.

There are some new teams joining in which will be fun.

The first competition saw Men’s Shed take the glory.

We thank everyone who helped make this competition such a success for the club!

SQUASH BENALLA SQUASH CLUB

By GREG MURPHY SQUASH has been going strong in Benalla for over 50 years.

Recent lockdowns have done little to curb the enthusiasm of the Club or the breadth and depth of squash on offer.

The Benalla Squash Club still has players of all ages and abilities and is available to everybody.

Unfortunately the squash competition ceased in Euroa a few years back and some players went to Benalla to continue playing for a time.

The Benalla Squash Club would like continue to have squash players from Euroa come and play.

So to help with this, the Benalla Squash Club is putting on four evenings of free

squash so previous players can gradually get fit again before the upcoming Autumn Competition Season and new players can have a try at the sport to see what it is like.

There will be players of all ages and standards to play with at the come & try nights, plus racquets and balls can be provided by the club if you don’t have them.

Squash is a great sport to play, one of the best cardiac workouts and can be played regardless of the weather conditions and no worries about UV radiation!

The Benalla Squash Club is COVID compliant, with QR Code check in, hand sanitiser stations plus an air conditioned club room.

The regular, in-house competition season which runs on Monday and Wednesday evenings will commence on February 14th.

The courts are also open most Sundays at 5pm for social play and coaching is available.

There is also a separate junior squad who play socially and/or competitively, depending on their standard, plus some juniors play in both the junior squad and the regular competition nights.

The come & try nights are being held on Monday, January 31st, Wednesday 2nd, Monday 7th and Wednesday, February 9th.

Each night commences at 6:30pm at 5 Thomas Street, Benalla.

So come along, bring a friend, get your friend to bring a friend, have a go and have a fun time.

Young cricketers put on excellent performance

FUN FOR ALL AGES: The Euroa Croquet Club welcomes all, old and young, tall and small

Euroa Croquet Club returns for new season AFTER what feels like a long hiatus over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the Euroa Croquet Club will recommence social and competition play as of Wednesday, February 2nd.

Wednesdays will run as normal, and Friday afternoon games will be played from 5-7pm to avoid the summer heat.

Players are asked to bring their own wine and cheeses

of choice for a sit down and chat after the games.

The Euroa Croquet Club welcomes new and seasoned players, and encourage all to come on down and have a go.

Euroa 9-132 def. Notre Dame/St Brendans 5-114 WITH Covid putting extra pressure on teams across the region, Euroa Under 14’s B Grade were lucky enough to field a team of 10 against their Round nine opponents, Notre Dame/St Brendans on Saturday morning at the Friendlies.

Euroa won the toss and chose to bat sending out Jack Walters and Ollie Swain to begin the day.

They made a solid start before Ollie was caught out having made six runs.

Jack stayed on to make 16 before being retired, not out.

Will Davey faced his 20 balls and was retired after racking up seven, Ethan Saxon also retired not out after making 17.

Leo Murphy and Declan

Antonis were both bowled out after making two and nine respectively.

Leila Creevey sadly got bowled for a golden duck, Angus Burton got one in before also being bowled out.

Haimi Wolfenden got five runs before being caught out and Lachlan Dowell was unfortunately bowled for a duck in his first game, but we are looking forward to seeing what he will bring to the next one.

Jack came back in and got three more runs before being bowled, leaving Will (six more runs) and Ethan (nine more runs) to finish off the innings before Ethan got caught out with Euroa’s total at 9-132.

After a quick break Ollie and Haimi opened the bowling, with Haimi and Ethan

together running out the first for seven.

Jack, Leo and Angus followed but the next wicket fell to Will Davey, bowling 2-36.

Ethan’s turn at bowl saw the third wicket for 40 with a run out from Declan together with Jack at stumps.

Leila bowled a maiden over and Declan took the fourth at 60 with an LBW. Notre Dame/St Brendans ticked over runs at a fairly steady pace as we cycled through our bowlers again but didn’t quite get there and Will bowled the fifth and final wicket at 106 in the very last over before they finished up at 114.

Round 10 sees the Under 14’s playing Karramomous at the VE Vibert Reserve next Saturday at 8am.

Two divisions come away with weekend wins

By JAMES IVILL ANOTHER ‘My Future Academy Spartan Challenge’ is about to roll out for young people aged 4-12 (three different age groups 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 years old) This was a pilot program last year that was a huge success with over 60 kids involved.

We are hoping to go bigger and better this year with more awareness of the program.

After the raw deal that young people have had over the past few years with school closures and lockdowns it has never been so important to get kids active, socialising and having some fun!

Big year ahead for my future academy the program aims to encourage young people to have some fun, meet new people, participate in team building activities, and to become stronger both physically and mentally by challenging themselves.

Local horse trainer takes first win EUROA local Matt Ivill has worked with horses for the last 10 years of his life, but only took on racehorse training recently, obtaining his trainer’s license six months ago.

Matt and family were elated at Mansfield Picnic Races when their fourth runner Unanchored took out a slightly unexpected win.

All were excited to see Unanchored win, as her bloodlines have been with the family for over 30 years and she is very fondly referred to as stable favourite.

As an employee at local racing stables Lindsay Park, Matt and a group of

colleagues have been training the family bred as a side hobby, primarily for a bit of fun.

“We expected her to run well but the win was a bit of a surprise”, Matt said.

The dam of Unanchored was a stayer, and Matt held hope that she too would get some middle distance and hopefully gain confidence in herself while running in some smaller picnic races.

Matt and Unanchored will be travelling to Hanging Rock on Australia day where they hope the little pocket rocket can surprise everybody once again and go two for two.
