REG Dickinson has resigned from his role as a Strathbogie Shire councillor, saying he “can no longer work in a toxic environment”.

Mr Dickinson – who represented the Lake Nagambie Ward – is the fourth councillor to resign within the same term of council and the third to go this year, following the resignations of Melanie Likos in August 2021 (Lake

His resignation comes two months after the council’s second municipal monitor in 12 months, Peter Stephenson, delivered a report to Minister

for Local Government Melissa Horne, which is set to decide the council’s future but is yet to be published.

In an interview with The Euroa Gazette following his resignation on Wednesday, Mr Dickinson raised concerns about the council similar to those raised by Mr Andrews and Ms Hourigan, who had respectively mentioned unhappiness with council’s “culture” (Mr Andrews)

and “in-house political bureaucracy” (Ms Hourigan) upon their resignations.

“I resigned for my own personal wellness and I can no longer work in a toxic environment,” he said.

“Without going into specifics, it was ongoing and it’s been going on for a long time – we’ve had two monitors in, and all kinds of negativity going on, not just within council, but through

the administration as well.”

Mr Dickinson said he was unable to provide specific details due to confidentiality.

The Nagambie resident – who owned small businesses and worked as a schoolteacher in his earlier professional life – said he ran for council with “the best of intentions” and had “served with integrity” while keeping ratepayers front of mind.

New identification signage installed at Euroa Museum

By THE EUROA HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY IN December 2022, the Euroa Historical and Genealogical Society was successful in receiving a 2022/23 Arts and Culture Community Grant from the Shire of Strathbogie.

The grant was to install a plaque per exhibit, detailing the type of agricultural machinery, location/date of manufacture, purpose, use in the Euroa district and who donated the machinery to the museum.

Site preparation included working bees to move some exhibits so those of a similar

theme were placed together, and to improve access to exhibits through defined, newly created walkways.

Careful editing of exhibits’ information was done before the plaques were created.

A star picket, with plaque, was placed beside each exhibit, allowing for improved visibility of information.

This brought the museum in line with current practice with presentation of information, found in other museums/ galleries.

The society would like to thank all the volunteers involved with this upgrade, whether members of the soci-

ety or not; lots of hours were involved to complete all tasks.

Thanks, too, must go to the Strathbogie Shire for providing the funding for the project, knowing that it would support their focus in developing cultural vibrancy within the shire.

We look forward to you visiting the museum soon, to walk through our ‘new look’ agricultural machinery sheds.

But while the council had achieved a lot in its three years, “unfortunately the negatives far outweighed the positives”, he said.

“Communication between council and ratepayers, transparency … wasn’t there, unfortunately,” he continued.

“For as much as they like to preach it, it didn’t happen often enough”.

Mr Dickinson declined to provide examples of occasions council had demonstrated a lack of transparency, instead suggesting to “ask the ratepayers”.

Mr Dickinson did not sign the “statement of intent” or other documents that were the culmination of councillors’ intensive training with Andrew Douglas of FCW Lawyers, which had been prompted by the appointment of a second municipal monitor.

He said he had been on sick leave when the other councillors signed this document at the August council meeting.

“There were still lots of issues going on and I thought, ‘nothing has changed here, so, I’m not sure that I want to sign it’,” he said.

“I told them that I wouldn’t be signing it [at the October meeting] and I would be giving my answer the following day, being today … because I knew that I was going to be resigning today.”

Mr Dickinson said he had been considering resigning for some time, but before he resigned, he wanted to vote on three issues of particular importance to him.

“Some people didn’t do their job properly, and it was a ratepayer who alerted council to the fact that what they were proposing to do was not within the regulations,” he said regarding the Weir Road delay.

The third issue of particular importance to him, relating to council’s role as the waterway

manager for the Goulburn River from Hughes Creek to Goulburn Weir, was dealt with behind closed doors after it was listed as a matter of confidential business at the October council meeting.

This was only the third matter to be discussed as “confidential business” in this term of council, the other two being when council decided on Australia Day award winners.

Mr Dickinson is the third Nagambie Ward councillor to resign within this term of council, but while he said “there could be more listening done over here at Nagambie”, he did not consider this

a major contributor to his decision to resign.

“Look, we’re a totally new council and we have a relatively new CEO – she’d only been in the job a matter of months, and so we were all learning,” he said.

“And we really came a long way, but we weren’t getting very good feedback.

“You get picked up for the smallest mistakes, but there was no real feedback about all the good things that you did as well.

“For a relatively new council, we needed more experienced people that we could talk to.

“For me, his knowledge that came across the council table was just amazing, and he enlightened us to so many things in such a short time.

“So, it’s been a huge learning curve, but not always a good learning curve.”

The only remaining 2020 election candidate for Lake Nagambie is Paul Ayton, who was asked by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to resume the role of councillor after the resignation of Dave Andrews, but did not respond to the VEC’s request.

If no past candidate is available to step into the role, a by-election is to be held, the VEC has confirmed.

Mayor Laura Binks said council had received Mr Dickinson’s resignation and had informed the Minister for Local Government and the VEC. “He has been a passionate campaigner for his region, and we thank him for his contribution,” Cr Binks said.

Responding to the critiques Mr Dickinson made of council to this masthead, Cr Binks shed light on concerns she had raised with Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne, which led in part to the second municipal monitor’s appointment, along with concerns others had raised with the Minister.

“The problem is as simple as some councillors continually failing to uphold the code of conduct and to understand and follow good governance,” she said.

North East rail line closed on Monday THE Melbourne to Albury rail line will be closed on Monday, October 30 (3am-9pm) for Inland Rail construction work.

Freight and passenger services will be suspended as Inland Rail carries out essential work at the Barnawartha North, Wangaratta, Glenrowan and Seymour-Avenel Road project sites, the ARTC has announced.

Coaches will replace trains for the entire journey between Southern Cross and Albury on Monday.

ARTC Victoria general manager of projects Ed Walker said the ARTC apologises for the inconvenience and thanks local communities for their patience and understanding.

Cleeland calls on government Euroa Community Cinema to decide council’s future

By DARREN CHAITMAN FOLLOWING the resignation of Reg Dickinson last week, Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has called on Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne to make a decision regarding the fate of Strathbogie Shire Council before a by-election is held to fill the new vacancy.

“With the news that another Strathbogie Shire councillor has resigned, it is imperative that the Minister for Local Government makes a decision based on the most recent monitor’s report,” Ms Cleeland said.

The council’s second municipal monitor in less than 12 months, Peter Stephenson, delivered a report to Minister Horne after he finished his term over two months ago, but the minister is yet to make a decision regarding the council’s future or publish the report.

Mr Dickinson’s resignation leaves Lake Nagambie Ward

Government pressured to publish monitor’s report before possible Nagambie by-election p g y with an extraordinary vacancy, which will result in the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) conducting a modified countback and potentially a byelection to fill the vacancy, both at a cost to ratepayers.

However, the VEC has confirmed the countback and byelection processes would cease if the council were placed into administration, which has been widely speculated on as a possible outcome to follow Mr Stephenson’s report.

“It has been two months now, and with a costly by-election looming that would result in local ratepayers footing the bill, a decision on this council’s future should be made immediately,” Ms Cleeland said.

election candidate for Lake Nagambie is Paul Ayton, who was asked by the VEC to resume the role of councillor after the resignation of Dave Andrews earlier this year, but did not respond to the VEC’s request.

If Mr Ayton again does not declare himself eligible to step into the role, a by-election would be held, the VEC has confirmed.

“I request that the second, most recent council report is made public due its significance for the local community, especially considering the latest resignation by outgoing councillor Reg Dickinson,” Ms Cleeland continued.

“It’s important that ratepayers have trust in their local council and releasing the report

will help give residents clarity about the situation.”

Following his resignation, Mr Dickinson told The Euroa Gazette he believed “nothing has changed” since the monitor’s term ended, despite councillors undergoing intensive training with Andrew Douglas of FCW Lawyers at a cost of $43,182 (excluding GST) in response to the monitor’s appointment.

Mayor Laura Binks said the terms of reference set by the Minister for the municipal monitor’s appointment “were serious and challenging”.

“This is an exceptionally challenging time for councillors and the council administration, and I will welcome the Minister’s decision, while understanding it will take significant and serious thought,” she said.

The State Government said they are determining their response to the monitor’s report and will take into account all other relevant factors in making its final decision.

Drainage in Euroa set for an upgrade

By DARREN CHAITMAN STRATHBOGIE Shire Council is set to upgrade the drainage in the southeast area of Euroa, namely the area south of Kirkland Avenue and east of Atkins Street.

Councillors have voted to award Jarvis Delahey Contractors of Shepparton a contract of $330,874.66 inclusive of GST to upgrade drainage on Burns Avenue, Atkins Street, Anderson Street and White Street.

“It’s great to see this now happening,” Cr Weatherald said at last week’s council meeting.

“It’s taken a long time, but it will be worth it, because there are serious drainage problems in and around the … area, and a lot of properties get impacted very adversely.”

Cr Weatherald claimed drainage issues were a “seriously hot topic” many years ago, which almost saw former mayor John Stringer “thrown out of town”.

“God bless the council for a lot of very good work here, bringing this to fruition, and there’s not a rioter in the house,” he said.

Cr Sally Hayes-Burke said there would be “some happy residents” as a result of the council’s drainage upgrade.

“Drainage is part of council’s core business and we know it needs some work, but we’re doing our best to address the infrastructure, especially in light of flooding and climate change,” she said.

Graffiti spree targets Euroa Railway Station Police investigates g vandalism on building g

By DARREN CHAITMAN B EUROA Railway Station has been targeted in an alleged graffiti spree, the results of which could be seen at the station on Thursday last week.

Multiple signs and a shed at the station were scrawled over with lewd messages.

Messages visible on the shed in large writing included “3636 boys”.

The word “f***” was allegedly added to a Euroa Station sign, so it read “f*** Euroa Station”.

V/Line confi they V/Li firmed d th removed part of the graffiti from the station on Thursday last week.

“Local staff undertook extensive graffiti removals at Euroa Station on Thursday and a specialist crew will be returning as soon as possible to finalise the clean-up,” a V/Line spokesperson said.

“V/Line does not tolerate vandalism and graffiti at our stations or on our trains and we work closely with Victoria Police to find those responsible.”

On Friday, V/Line said

V/Line said graffiti can cost them about $4 million each year on cleaning and rail replacement services.

Facebook commenters were deeply unimpressed with the graffiti, suggesting the alleged vandals had “no respect”, “no future in life” and it was “so sad”.

Euroa Police confirmed they were investigating the incident.

Hume region strong over five years to 2022 THE Hume region continues to be among the state’s economic powerhouses after having experienced an employment growth rate of 8.3 per cent over the five years to 2022.

As of March 2023, the most recent figures available, the region’s unemployment rate

stands at 3.1 per cent.

Areas of major jobs growth over the five-year period include healthcare, social assistance, agriculture, forestry and fishing, construction and public administration.

Hume’s gross regional product continues its upward

trend rising by 9.8 per cent over the five years to 2022.

Path proposed to link Euroa township to Euroa Arboretum

A WALKING and cycling path linking the Euroa Arboretum to the township of Euroa could be one step closer after Strathbogie Shire Council voted to commission a detailed design of what they have called the “Arboretum Link”.

Euroa Arboretum CEO Cath Olive said discussions about the pathway – which she said would be a “great thing” to have – have been underway for at least 10 years, since she first started in her role, while Cr Robin Weatherald said he believed discussions had been ongoing for 15 to 20 years.

“It’s really nice that we can actually be acknowledged and recognised within the township of Euroa – and by the council as well – that it’s a destination that’s worth going to for local people,” Ms Olive said.

Ms Olive believes that among other benefits, the walking and cycling path would offer a safer way for locals to travel to the Arboretum. “[Visitors] walk on the side of the road, which is not safe,” she said.

The path’s route will take Stewart Street, Simpsons Lane, and Golf Course Road, and will connect with a pro-

posed new residential development, Euroa Eastern Gateway, which is expected to connect the Euroa Arboretum with the Euroa Golf Club on Golf Course Road.

Originally, the route proposed in council’s 2015 tracks and trails strategy led down Clifton Street and the Euroa Main Road, but this idea has been put aside after a study

found this would negatively affect the Euroa Guinea flower, which is listed as “vulnerable” and “threatened” under Commonwealth and Victorian government acts.

“They’ve re-routed it, which is great, and that’s probably saving surplus traffic over it [to] help protect that little plant,” Ms Olive said.

plant is only found in Euroa and areas nearby, including Longwood, Creighton, Avenel and Locksley, according to a Federal Government action statement.

“Having something that is only found in Euroa [and nearby areas] is surely something we should be proud of, and something that is worth knowing and understanding

and learning about,” Ms Olive continued.

“It’s not good for us if we lose species, it’s good for us to have diversity – it’s that diversity that actually binds us together and gives us our clean water and our fresh air.

“That’s how we actually maintain our functional systems and how we live.

“We’re completely linked – so, it might be just one little innocuous plant that you might never notice until it flowers for a few weeks of the year, but it’s such an integral part of our landscape.

“And it’s so unique and special to Euroa, that’s something worth celebrating for sure.”

At last week’s council meeting, Cr Sally HayesBurke called the proposed cycling and walking path a “really exciting project” that will “provide a huge benefit to visitors and tourists”.

Deputy Mayor Paul Murray said he also supported the project, but raised concerns the proposed route relies on the yet-to-be-built Euroa Eastern Gateway residential development, saying there was a possibility the development may never come to pass.

THANK you for publishing the results of the referendum in last week’s Euroa Gazette.

They confirm the overwhelming majority of local voters rejected the vague proposition that the federal government had put before us.

Whilst I believe all Australians would support the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the pre-amble to our constitution, the government failed to

be honest about what a Yes vote and the Voice would actually deliver.

I commend all those who took an active interest in the referendum, from both the Yes and the No camps, but it has been disappointing to see the Yes camp disrespect democracy and the result.

The verdict of the Australian people cannot be ignored by all levels of government.

The Strathbogie Shire councillors should take particular note of the local results – a clear majority voted No within the Shire.

Our elected councillors should now step back from the ideology that has characterised their current term in office.

Focus on local issues and work equally for all shire residents, ending the repetitive “welcome to country” that heads every meeting and every council document, and fly our national flag proudly.

Australians are one people.

We will not be divided by race or ancestry.

It’s time to again recognise that all Australians are equal.

Often these classes have to hurriedly find alternative locations in order to avoid detection by the Taliban authorities.

weekend is a really significant moment in the battle to stop one of the worst super pests invading the whole of Australia.

This is important leadership from Treasurer Chalmers and Minister Watt that will mean that work can now ramp up on the ground to stop fire ants spreading.

The pressure must now shift to the Victorian, Western Australian and South Australian Governments who have yet to commit to their share of funding for eradication.

We understand these states will be considering their level of funding and urge them to step and unite with Queensland, NSW and the federal government to stop fire ants in their tracks.

Eradication will take at least a decade and so while this four year funding announcement is very welcome, work should start immediately on developing the next funding package so that we do not have any more delays.

Fire ants are one of the world’s worst super pests and, if they are allowed to spread across the continent, their impact will be greater than cane toads, rabbits, feral cats and foxes combined.

Earlier this year, Victoria had a fire ant incursion with a Queen ant found on a freight pallet from Queensland.

Victoria is lucky the system caught it this time, but every year we fail to eradicate these super pests increases the odds they will sneak into other parts of Australia.

New mental health service coming to Shepparton THE State Government is set to introduce nine Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals across Victoria, including in Goulburn Valley region, allowing people to access walk-in mental health care and support without the need for a GP referral.

The providers for the Shepparton site are Wellways Australia in partnership with APMHA Healthcare and Goulburn Valley Health.

This Local will service three local government areas, according to the government – Greater Shepparton, Moira and Strathbogie Shire.

Support is delivered in-person, telehealth, and via outreach services and a care plan is then designed to match patient goals and preferences – family, carers and supporters can also be involved pending patient permission.

Member for Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said it’s great to know that mental health care for people in the Goulburn Valley will soon be available in their own backyard.

“A community-based mental health service in Shepp is going to be a welcome addition – it will ensure locals can access support closer to home and link them to other vital services they may need,” she said.

THE North East Battle of the Bands contest at Seven Creeks Park in Euroa on the weekend was enjoyed by participating bands and attracted 80 to 100 people throughout the day.

Mansfield’s Ella Cranthern won in the soloist/duo category, while Seymour band Madoja won in the band category.

The event was organised by local young people on Strathbogie Shire Council’s FReeZA committee, led by youth development officer Annette Walton.

Attendance at the event was buoyed by nearby gigs which were part of the Euroa Music Festival.

The Battle of the Bands was part of the council’s “Here and Now” youth music festival, which featured bands who also performed at Euroa Music Festival, including Euroa legends Bad Ibis, and Kilmore band Swim State.

The VCE now includes the VCE Vocational Major.

Euroa celebrates 200th parkrun Parkrun p participants p p prize p persistence over p performance as communityy enjoys j y milestone

By PENNY STEUART EUROA parkrun reached its 200th event on Saturday, October 21, with a gathering of 55 participants and 12 volunteers.

The occasion was marked with a sausage sizzle and was an opportunity to reflect on the evolution and impact of our local event.

One of the core principles of the global parkrun movement is to recognise persistence over performance; therefore, reaching 200 individual events was an accomplishment the local parkrun community was very proud to celebrate.

All parkrun events, and there are 476 in Australia, are community-led, free for life and run entirely by volunteers.

Two hundred events represents over five years of hard work on the part 216 different volunteers – most of whom reside in the local community.

People of all ages and abilities can attend parkrun as spectators, volunteers or five kilometre participants.

For example, in the past month at Euroa parkrun, the oldest participant was a spritely 88-year-old tourist from Ballarat and the

In total, 1731 different people have completed the Euroa parkrun five km course, covering an astonishing distance of 35,150km.

By global standards, Euroa parkrun is considered

to be a small event, with a weekly average of approximately 36 people, plus the 12 volunteers required to fill compulsory roles.

Albert Park parkrun in Melbourne by comparison had 797 participants this Saturday, and more locally, Shepparton parkrun had 214.

Being a small event, however, has advantages, as Euroa parkrun is nationally regarded as a “friendly and welcoming” event with visitors recommending our location to others in the parkrun community.

Each week, up to 30 local parkrunners attend our event with numbers buoyed

by “parkrun tourists”.

One of the most unifying aspects of any parkrun event happens during the pre-run introductory brief when visitors are invited to share where they have travelled from.

This is met by a round of applause from the locals in a show of support which dem-

onstrates the connection between everyone in the parkrun community – from Olympians to beginners.

For event 200, tourists from Ballarat, Bendigo, Melbourne, Castlemaine, Healesville, Murchison, Violet Town and Avenel contributed to the festive atmosphere – many of whom posed for photos in front of the sausage sizzle with the intention of sending the images to friends doing regular parkruns elsewhere.

In the past six months, international “parkrun tourists” from Portugal, Ireland, England, Scotland and Canada have incorporated our local event into their holidays.

These visitors often spend the remainder of the weekend within the region.

Euroa parkrun welcomes everyone to come along to walk, jog or run the 5km course at their own pace.

The event meets at the Seven Creeks Park barbecue area at 7.50am each Saturday and the five km walk/run starts at 8am sharp.

Violet Town project wins Resilient Australia Award

By DARREN CHAITMAN VIOLET Town’s Southern Aurora Memorial committee is “very proud” after the project was announced the winner of Victoria’s Resilient Australia Award (RAA) in the mental health and wellbeing category.

The innovative memorial at Violet Town Railway Station, which officially opened in 2019, commemorates the 1969 rail accident on the outskirts of Violet Town, in which nine passengers died and 117 were injured.

A project summary on the RAA website notes that recovery continues for many people traumatised by the collision and aftermath.

“At that time there [were] no counselling processes, nor understanding of the long-term impacts of a significant disaster,” the summary reads.

“The Southern Aurora Memorial project uses a range of art, design and information thus providing opportunities for remembering, reflection, interaction and learning in a large meditative garden space.”

Dotted around the memorial are 10 words displayed in large letters on wooden blocks: love, grief, resilience, generosity, humility, care, compassion, gratitude, kindness and courage.

Bruce Cumming, a committee member and the memorial’s designated historian, said he had initially wanted the memorial to reflect these 10 qualities.

When he told this to renowned cartoonist Michael Leunig, the artist then suggested the words themselves be placed in the garden.

“Mental health and wellbeing is at the core of this whole project,” Mr Cumming said.

“While it’s about telling local history and it’s about providing facts and figures and all sorts of different information, at its core, it’s about supporting people.”

He describes the event as one in which “hundreds of people helped hundreds of strangers”.

“Some of those helpers were on the train; it wasn’t just some local people, it was others who were passing in cars from interstate.

Part of Mr Cumming’s work on the project has been hearing and documenting the stories of the many survivors and helpers who were touched by the incident.

The memorial also offers a place for these people to reflect on and learn about the event.

“The feedback has been terrific, with people who were on the train, people who lost family members, people whose family was never able to talk about it – they’ve come here to learn something about it,” he said.

“Some of those people were involved in helping and they say things like, ‘[we] should have done this years ago’, or ‘it’s really a great place to come to just stop and think and take it all in’.”

Mr Cumming, who is now 70, said he has been collecting information about the incident since it first happened, when he was 15.

“I heard the crash happen, and as a 15-year-old, thinking about the significance of it was fairly upsetting for a kid, and both my parents and my two older brothers all came in to help out,” he said.

“And I knew that every other family around the district did the same thing.

“This is a bit of a universal thing around here, that it’s a really difficult subject to talk about.”

He said the committee’s focus is now on securing funding for their on-site museum, which will see the empty train carriage at the memorial filled with commemorative materials.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has congratulated the committee on the award.

“Not only is the memorial beautiful but it tells the story of a dedicated regional community that rallied to respond quickly and effectively to save and protect lives,” she said.

“This is a perfect demonstration of the community spirit that makes our regional towns so special.”

As Victoria’s winner, the project is now also in the running for a national Resilient Australia Award, to be announced in November.

The project has also been recognised in the 2019 Tidy Town Awards, Strathbogie Shire Council’s 2020 Australia Day awards, the 2022 Australian Street Art Awards and as a finalist in this year’s Tidy Town Awards.

MOST offers a glimpse of artists at work THE Mansfield Open Studio Trail (MOST) returns on November 4 and 5, showcasing 42 participating artists.

From painters to sculptors, textile artists, ceramicists, fluid art creators, woodworkers and jewellers, the MOST event promises a variety of artistic creations.

Established in 2019 and run by volunteers, MOST offers visitors an opportunity to connect with local artists and witness their creative processes.

“It’s a chance to connect with the art, the artists, and the local creative community,” MOST founder Wendy Jagger said.

She said MOST has become an annual highlight for art enthusiasts and visitors looking to explore the thriving art scene in north east Victoria.

By STEVE KELLY ONE Nation MP RikkieLee Tyrrell has packed up her office in Wangaratta and moved to a new headquarters to a more secure office in Shepparton.

She said the move was prompted as her current office does not comply with security requirements and the Parliament of Victoria has an available office in Shepparton.

The Wangaratta office closed on October 20, but she can be contacted via email.

“The Shepparton office will be up and running late November, early Decem-

ber with plans to relocate to Numurkah mid next year to provide access to our rural constituents located in the irrigation district,” Ms Tyrrell said.

“My electorate goes from Wodonga to Mildura and is the biggest in Victoria and I will continue to be a constant visitor to Wangaratta to speak with my constituents and I am always contactable via email at rikkie-lee.tyrrell@parliament.vic.gov.au.”

The MP for Northern Victoria has been operating out of her Faithfull Street, Wangaratta office since the start of the year after being elected as the first ever One Na-

tion candidate in Victorian Parliament.

The office was previously occupied by former Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party MP Tania Maxwell.

Ms Tyrrell is from Invergordon and has expressed her desire to secure better water security for the irrigators in Northern Victoria.

“For too long, Victoria’s irrigators have borne the brunt of water reform in the Murray–Darling Basin and the cost of water has driven many farmers out of the industry with commensurate impacts on regional economies,” she said at the time of election.

Celebrating 150 years of St Malachy’s church Nagambie church to bless a plaque to mark church’s anniversaryy milestone PAST and present parishioners of St Malachy’s Parish are coming together on November 19 to celebrate 150 years of St Malachy’s Church in Nagambie.

Father Michael Farrelly, Parish Priest of Kilmore, was instrumental and responsible for building a Catholic Church in Nagambie, and on Sunday, December 1, 1872, the Right Rev Dr Goold, Bishop of Melbourne, together with Fr Farrelly, laid the foundation stone of the church.

The architect was Mr Kelly, and the builders were Messrs Bell Brothers of Melbourne, under the watchful eyes of Mr John Lester, Clerk of Works and Fr Farrelly, who travelled on horseback from Kilmore to check on the progress of the building.

The church building is of Gothic style architecture, composed of double brick, roofed in slate, with Geelong freestone quoins on foundations of Avenel granite. The stained-glass windows above the altar and at the opposite end of the church are the work of the esteemed Ferguson and Erie Company, who were the leading manufacturer of stained-glass in the colony.

The church was opened on Sunday, March 15, 1874, by the Rev Dr Fitzpatrick, Vicar General.

The Parish of Nagambie, by which it was then known, was erected in 1875 and Fr Patrick Kearns was appointed the first Parish Priest in 1876.

He was instrumental in building many churches and schools throughout the vast parish, including an elegant presbytery, completed 1881, which is now named in his honour.

Remaining in the Gadd family for generations, provisioning Avenel and the wider rural community, it closed upon John Gadd’s retirement and the accumulated economic changes of the 1990s.

Among other things, Graydon carefully had restored the rear timbers compromised by substantial white ant damage, and brought the store back to its integral original functionality and artisan-crafted ambience.

Under the label of “W.C. Gadd”, Graydon and family have set up their own style of store, a great addition to Avenel, and continuing the longevity of “Gadd’s store”.

The Euroa Show is returning this year on Saturday, October 28 and in the past our students have loved entering in some of the craft and other competitions.

It might be a fun way to keep kids entertained over the holidays.

By CATIE HILL IN early April, Melissa Seymour was appointed chief executive officer of Euroa Health and the passing of this leadership baton can only be described as transformative as Melissa reflects on her journey to date.

After initially joining Euroa Health as the innovation and special projects manager two and a half years ago, Ms Seymour quickly demonstrated her ability to drive positive change within the organisation and reconnected her families ties back to Euroa, alongside her Dad, Vic Nelson.

Ms Seymour embraced the role of CEO on an interim basis during unprecedented situations, amidst ongoing challenges posed by COVID. Her ability to navigate these difficult circumstances and lead staff, patients, residents, and their families through them is indeed admirable.

This kind of leadership is vital in healthcare settings, especially during times of crisis, and it speaks to her dedication and competence in ensuring the wellbeing of the organisation and the community.

Ms Seymour has successfully recruited three locals to important leadership roles at Euroa Health.

ON September 9, we held the Terip Terip CFA awards night and dinner.

Some 50 community members and brigade members were in attendance.

We recognised an astonishing 154 years of service to the Victorian community District 12 assistant chief fire officer (ACFO) Rob Van Dorsser was presenting awards.

“With 55 brigade members, including 38 firefighters, you’ve responded to 85 fires and other emergencies in the last five years,” ACFO Van Dorsser said in his speech.

“For a class one, rural fire brigade, that’s a really great effort.

“By our records, there have been only 10 captains between 1945 and 2023, a sign of consistency, continuity and true commitment.

“And that this year, you have elected the brigade’s first female captain, Shannon Roach, shows Terip Terip is progressive and inclusive, which is something to be

really proud of.”

A 75th year anniversary certificate presented to captain Shannon Roach on behalf of the brigade.

The awards night gave us the opportunity to celebrate ex-captain Geoff Penny (captain for 31 years who stepped down from the position on April 2023) and celebrate the new captain, Ms Roach – Terip Terip’s first female captain.

The following were the night’s key awards.

Max Eddy received a 65 year service medal; Jan Penny received a 30 year CFA life membership medal; Joan Penny received a 40 year CFA life membership medal; Ross Penny received a 40 year CFA life membership medal; Geoff Penny received a 45 year CFA life membership medal, a national medal and three clasp; Edward Greenwood received a 50 year CFA life membership medal; Bruce McLennan received a 60 year CFA life membership medal.

Police officer Kyle to run for a future free of cancer BETWEEN November 3 and 9, police officer Kyle Gemmill will embark on a mammoth 441km run between Nathalia and the Victorian Police Centre in Melbourne.

This equates to about 1.5 marathons per day, and he is scheduled to arrive in Euroa on November 6, where he will stay overnight.

He is doing this to raise awareness and crucial funds for Ewing sarcoma research.

On November 9, 2022, Victoria Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) experienced a profound loss when a pillar of its community, Brendon Warburton, also known as KB, succumbed to Ewing sarcoma.

This rare cancer, affecting approximately 200 Australians annually, constitutes only one per cent of all adult cancers.

KB, a veritable mountain of a man, gave 18 years of unwavering dedication to the Special Operations Group.

It was here, during a defensive tactics training session 12 years ago, that Kyle Gemill met KB, sowing

Way Back Wednesday - a look back at what was making news 50 years ago this week.

ON this week 50 years ago, Seven Creeks Estate was sold for $2.19 million.

The October 24, 1973 The Euroa Gazette reported the successful bidder at an auction at the Melbourne Wool Exchange was Mr Bill Hegerty, who was “bidding on behalf of Fambra and associates – a family of about five”.

“One of the good things that came out of last Friday’s Seven Creeks Estate auction is that the estate will not be split up or subdivided,” the Gazette printed.

The Gazette’s front page was full of news this week, featuring 11 short news stories, plus an extensive gossip column written by Snoopy.

News reported on the cover page included Euroa’s Barry Alderton’s involvement in a motorbike crash, that entries for the exhibition sheds at next Saturday’s Euroa Show were “excellent again this year”, and the announcement of a “revolutionary shearing event” to take place at the Euroa Show featuring four past champion shearers.

Along with Snoopy’s many sassy snippets this week regarding local residents, the

anonymous gossip columnist also took aim at himself, reporting that “things must be in a bad way” because he had to pay to have his shirts ironed.

An article on page three titled “Euroa Clay Products – a success story” described that when Malcolm Cameron had started the business 10 years ago, not many people thought it would be a success, but doubters “have been proved wrong, and the business had run on a profitable basis over the past

few years”.

The article includes a picture of brothers Dennis and Trevor Kubeil, the longest serving employees of the company, with manager Milton Moffatt.

On page two, it was reported that Heather McKay had arrived at her wedding to Laury Soyer in a vintage Rolls Royce lent by a Mr H Wheeler.

The wedding was held at St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Euroa and was officiated by Rev A Thomas.

The property, which Elders Real Estate and CBRE Agribusiness are selling in conjunction, is available as a whole or in three separate lots, expected to average in the vicinity of $4,000– $4,500 per acre or $10,000– $11,000 per hectare.

The three separate lots that comprise the Balmullin aggregation are Balmullin (868.82ha), Berridale (350.88ha) and Boxwood Park (330.88ha).

The farm is owned by the Ball family, who are selling the lots in order restructure their business.

On November 1, Euroa Garden Club will travel by bus to Benalla.

The Benalla Garden Club is hosting this trip and opening five wonderful gardens for visiting.

EUROA Horse Park is presenting free presentations by renowned equine coach Sally Francis.

“Horses are great healers,” Euroa Horse Park owner Vanessa Hawkins said.

“We use them (and our cattle) in our ESB Animal Assisted Learning sessions to assist people who are disabled, disadvantaged, have special needs or like most of us, generally need help coping with the pressures of life from time to time.”

She is running two “Horses 4 Healing” days on October 28 and November 25 for people to learn more about the benefits of hippotherapy, animal assisted learning (AAL) and animal assisted therapy (AAT) programs with Ms Francis.

“We’d like to let people, healthcare providers, professionals and local government agencies know that many different types of animals can be used in a range of programs to assist people of all ages who are at risk, or suffering mental health challenges, illness, physical injuries or even need help with pain management.

“Sally travels internationally as an equine coach and is in such high demand that we locked in the only dates that she had left available this year.

“Unfortunately, the first one clashes with the Euroa Show but we have an evening session for those that are busy during the day as well as November 25.”

Sally Francis OAM has been awarded the 2023 coach/fitness leader of the year in the 2023 Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards.

She has been chef d’equipe and assistant coach for five Paralympic Games and five world championships, and has been coaching riders of all abilities for over 40 years in all disciplines.

SPRING is always a wonderful time for gardeners and the Euroa Garden Club is enjoying its busiest time for the year.

On Friday the members travelled to Strathbogie to the wonderful garden of Helen and David Kennett.

The monthly meeting was held outside for the first time this year.

The weather was sensational and this hilltop garden has a spectacular view, so the combination of these ensured a happy time.

Helen Kennett spoke of the trials and joy of turning a neglected paddock into the amazing garden of today.

She told of the diverse ecosystems within their property, from rainforest bush to a paddock of rare native grasses and the rocky outcrops.

Following the meeting and the usual generous and delicious afternoon tea, Helen and David treated members to guided tours of the garden.

It was a most enjoyable day and the club is very grateful to Helen and David Kennett for their generous hospitality.

This week the “over the fence” garden competition, which is an annual Garden Club activity, will be judged.

The winners will be announced at the Euroa Show on Saturday.

Statewide champs come to town EUROA GOLF CLUB

By RICHARD JOHNSON EUROA Golf Club played host to the Power Industry Association Statewide Golf Championships for three days of competition over the weekend.

The event brought more than 100 players competing in four divisions to Euroa with players coming from right across the state and including visitors from as far as the Gold Coast and Tasmania.

The players competed in a four ball event on Friday and were hosted to a delightful dinner at the Club on Friday evening before commencing a two day event over the weekend.

The event organising committee led by president Gail Allen had been planning the event for over twelve months after the 2022 event was postponed due to floods.

An enormous amount of work went into the preparation of the event and course director Phil Steers and greenkeeper Dav Mackrell presented the course in pristine condition.

Members worked tirelessly getting the course ready and the visiting players were highly complimentary of the club and the playing conditions of the course.

Over the weekend more than 40 club members volunteered their services with many working over the entire weekend.

The Lindsay Park sponsored courtesy bus was kept busy ferrying the players from their accommodation to and from the course and to other hospitality

The Power Industry Association conducts the event annually at a different location each year and the event will be a major financial boost for the club as well as for the wider community hospitality and accommodation businesses.

The club arranged for a fleet of karts to be made available for the visitor’s enjoyment, and the kart coordinator Marcus Steers thanked the club members for making their karts available.

The Power Industry Association event organisers thanked the Euroa club and commented that it had been one of the most successful and enjoyable events.

They were highly complimentary

of the facilities and the warm welcome extended by the wider Euroa community and many commented that they will return to Euroa after having enjoyed a most successful event.

Club competition was suspended over the weekend, however a good field of 30 men which included some players in town for the Power Industry Association event competed in the Wednesday Stableford event in which division one was won by Paddy McCarthy and Glenn Langlands took out Division two with 39 points.

Balls down the Line went to Rick Langlands 38, Tony Walters 37, Neil Healey 35 with Lucas Paul, Peter McMahon and Dick Farmer one back on 34.

Mary Dewis had a win in the Ladies event with 38 points, Balls down the line went to Robyn Lied and Michelle Thompson.

Keith Seeber collected the pool in the Twilight event played on Thursday winning the swindle, the Nearest the Pin and the daily competition.

Euroa plays host to the Dalhousie District Veterans event on Thursday and next weekend will see the Club busy again conducting the annual Spring Tournament which gets underway with the Mixed Pineshurst event on Friday followed by a four ball par on Saturday and a 27 hole stroke event on Sunday.

Hughes found the dance floor on the long eighth, and Graeme Keogh not only reaching the green but going oh so close on the 13th.

Next week’s golf is the Nagambie golf clubs biggest event the Open format Goulburn Cup 4BBB Par sponsored by he Nagambie Rowing Club, it will be a 9am assemble for a 10 am shotgun start, entries can be forward to captains Ronda Richards 0408 349 505 or David Love 0419 672 442.

STABLEFORD was played on Saturday, October 21 at Strathbogie Golf Club, it was great welcoming a few Euroa members to play golf with us.

Winner of the day was John Moore with a great score of 37 points.

The lineballs were won by Phil Fry with 36 points, Victoria Fry with 36 points, Mick Dixey with 36 points, Kerry Hewlett with 35 points and Keith Seeber with 35 points.

Nearest the pin winners on the forth hole was Phil Fry, on the eighth was Mick Dixey and on the 17th Chris Bennett.

Men’s drive and pitch was won

by Gary Downes and the Ladies was won by Kerry Hewlett.

IT was the Irish who turned the 11th century French game ‘jeu de mail’ into croquet; the Scots turned it into golf and the Brits changed the rules.

Today croquet is being played by a group of Euroa Secondary College students at the Euroa Croquet Ground.

The game must be fun to play to have lasted this long.

The Euroa Croquet Club have a great set-up next to the Euroa Bowls Club with immaculate greens, club house and on this perfect day a bunch of year nine Euroa Secondary College students.

On the day the teams were formed and it was game on.

There was so much laughter it was tricky to work out if the game was not being played according to the rules, or if the students were fully immersed in having fun with a bit of formality, a dash of determination and loads of competitiveness.

When asked if they enjoyed the game and would play again there was no hesitation – ”yes please“.

After securing the lead on the sixth end with a five, then scoring a second five on the eighth end, Rusty Schwab, James Wall, Dennis McGregor, and Spud Furletti never looked back to bring home a strong 12 shot, win 32 – 20.

Ten shots up on the 18th end, Nyoli Bell, Graham Lewis, Howard Geldard, and Geoff Hateley lost their way for the remaining ends.

Kyabram won the last seven ends nine shots to zip.

However, Avenel had enough runs on the board to win by the merest margin 23 – 22.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, and Grace Kenworthy in a close tussle all game were only one shot down on end 23.

Kyabram came home the stronger scoring five on the last two ends for a six shot win 23 – 17.

Mid-Week Pennant Division six - Avenel 2 – 39 were defeated by Mooroopna White 12 - 44.

Scoring 12 shots over the first five ends and holding Mooroopna White scoreless gave Moiann Papageorgiou,

Ruth Underwood, Ron Harrison, and Glen Bell a solid start. They went on to win the game 23 – 17.

Winning just seven of the twenty-one ends, Marg Harrison, Mark Morse, Marion Gittus, and Graeme Toy were in struggle street against an inform Mooroopna White rink, losing 16 – 27.

Weekend Pennant Division 3 - Avenel 2 – 82 were defeated

by Mooroopna 16 – 114.

Howard Geldard, Josh McDonald, Charlie Kemp, and Geoff Hateley got off to a flying start being up 17 – 1 by the seventh end.

Winning only three ends after the break let Mooroopna back into the game, but Avenel held on for a six shot win 30 – 24.

Winning seven straight ends mid game gave Pam Pedder, Donna Rowley, James Wall, and Jake Wall a ten-shot lead on the 14th end.

Mooroopna chipped away for the remaining ends to win the game by two, 22 – 20.

The game was in reach early for Glen Bell, Rusty Schwab, Dennis McGregor, and Spud Furletti but winning only three ends after lunch saw Mooroopna win comfortably 34 – 18.

Ruth King, Fay Hateley, Kate Donovan, and Grace Kenworthy never recovered from losing ten straight ends early in the game.

Mooroopna went from strength to strength to record a big win 34 – 14.

With a scorecard that represented Seymour’s accurate and consistent bowling Nyoli Bell, Noel Slater, Graham Lewis, and Graeme Toy just didn’t have the answers to stop the landslide result, losing 9 – 28.

Avenel is running a Business Bowls Challenge on Wednesday evenings from November 15 through to December 6.

The format is two games of six ends, two bowl triples with a maximum of one Pennant bowler per team.

Euroa tennis competition reached fever pitch in round three play EUROA DISTRICT TENNIS

By CAROLINE KEENAN IT was ideal conditions for tennis at Euroa on Saturday where most of the lawn courts were bursting with round three action.

Again, the round produced a couple of one-sided encounters and other clashes which came down to the wire.

In Division one, St Paul’s kept its good form with a comfortable win over Euroa Lawn, which was relying on a number of fill-ins to field a side.

The match saw Mark Borthwick’s debut for St Paul’s in his comeback appearance from injury.

The standout performance came from Faye Mollison who dropped only three games in her three rubbers.

St Paul’s won in a landslide 69-27.

Moglonemby is back on the winners’ list after a 6446 win over Benalla Lawn Green.

A strong performance from the men was the difference with Michael Nolan and Dublin Anderson winning all their matches.

Chris Ellis and her Gooram outfit went down to Terip Terip in a nail-biter with it all coming down to the final mixed game.

Grandmother and grandson partnership Josh Higgins and Julie Harrington fell just short, bringing Gooram’s total 57 with Terip Terip claiming 60.

Gayle Furphy and Bede Redfern were central to Longwood Lawn’s four game victory over Strathbogie.

They both won all their matches to lead their side to a confidence-booting win.

The final score was 57 to 61.

In Division two, Violet Town has strung together its second win in a row with a comfortable win over Longwood Lawn.

The Violet Town ladies were too strong for the young home-side players.

The final score was 70 to 39.

And the St Paul’s men proved too good for Swanpool.

Success in the men and the mixed made up for the ladies’ lack of success.

The final score was 59 to 43.

EUROA CRICKET - UNDER 16S

By TIM JACKSON FRIDAY night started the commencement of the Cardamone Real Estate Cricket Shepparton under 16 A competition.

Euroa played host to Shepparton

Youth Club United at the picture perfect Friendly Society Recreation Reserve.

The oval was presented in an outstanding order.

In a 20/20 format, Euroa won the toss and elected to bat first and packed a good total of 1 – 173.

After their 20 overs with four batsman retiring Cale Robertson on 19 runs, Tom White on 21, Walter Jackson on 33 and Archie Wilson on 48.

With daylight running out quickly the Euroa lads took to the field with their tales up looking for early wickets and it wasn’t long before making roads in the United boys batting. The fielding and energy was electric with

no catches dropped, everyone giving great support to each other, testimony to the boys early pre-season training.

Shepparton Youth Club United making 7 –33 after 20 overs wicket takers for Euroa were Leo Murphy 3 – 5, Tom White 2 – 10 and Archie Wilson 1- 3.

There were four boys making their debt for the Euroa Cricket Club on Friday night James Benton, Thomas White, Edison Waghorn and Louis McAlpin.

Congratulations to the lads and their parents for their exemplary conduct both on and off the field, truly making a significant addition to the team and the club.

By JAMES LLOYD EUROA A grade team hosted Central Park-St Brendan’s (CPSTB) at Friendlies Oval for the first game of the season due to round one being washed out and a bye round two.

In the early season with plenty of cobwebs getting blown out it was local boy Vaughan Kirk and Scott Hamilton to take the challenge to last years runners up.

The boys started out very well at the top of the order and looking very comfortable before Vaughan thought he would try pop one over cow corner and the umpired deemed him leg before wicket and he was on his way.

Nick Hill come in then and was the stalwart in the innings, facing most of the deliveries Central Park bowled for the day.

With Hill holding down the fortress at one end it was time for Hamilton to have a crack to which multiple boundaries were hit before, gifting his wicket to the midoff fieldsman.

Squires was consolidating a great innings before he ran out Fletcher Paul and then edged the ball in the same over to show a lack of concentration.

Andrew Butterworth debuted in his first A grade innings to which started well with a boundary first ball but that’s where it ended shortly after.

Butterworth tried to clear the boundary with an almighty blow but ended up finding a hole in his bat and

Euroa then handed the new pill to James Lloyd the import from Shepparton and Fletcher Paul.

Lloyd started well with

finding a line and length early to grab an edge of Cowan’s piece of willow.

The ball shot off the edge to Hamilton at second slip to his surprise was parallel with the ground in a round three classic catch.

In celebration Hamilton

asserted his dominance as Euroa’s number one fielder.

A short time later a ‘dolly’ of a catch was sent in the air to Lachie Hill, due to jetlag and the thoughts reminiscing of Darwin (to which he is sure to take a career in air guitar solos) he dropped the

From then on it was all Central Park, Vaughan Kirk gifted a set Larkin a full toss on his hip to which ended up somewhere on the Strathbogie hill.

Butterworth who didn’t do much with the bat, came

in and bowled some donkey drops that enticed the batsman to a false shot to get more club championship points.

The next ball he was then sent to the tennis courts and the game was over.
