HELEN Haines has been returned as the Independent member for Indi, receiving a resounding swing of 7.31 per cent of the two candidate preferred vote.

Dr Haines’ vote increased to 58.8 per cent of the two candidate preferred vote, from 51.39 per cent in 2019, according to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).

“I’m truly grateful to the people of Indi for putting their trust in me to represent them again into this next parliament,” Dr Haines told

“It’s been a really tumultuous three years for our electorate, and I’ve been proud to serve as the member for Indi and I’m ready to serve again.

“I’m absolutely overjoyed and thrilled to not only win, but to have such an increased majority on many, many booths.”

The member for Indi received 40.99 per cent of the first preference vote,

significantly outpolling Liberal Party challenger Ross Lyman, who received 30.91 per cent.

She received swings across almost all polling booths in Indi, including doublefigure percentage swings in regional centre booths like Yea, Wodonga Central, and Mansfield.

Indi postal votes and votes from the AEC mobile team will be counted during the week.

Dr Haines put the

successful result down to Indi voters valuing strong Independent representation.

“The people of Indi know that an Independent speaks for the people, that I am not a rubber stamp, that I’ll stick up for them every single time, that I don’t take orders from party bosses,” she said.

“I know the people of Indi well because I’m out amongst them.

“They’ve seen how I work and they’ve seen the results in this community.”

Dr Haines said she would continue to push for a federal integrity commission and action on climate change, and particularly highlighted the need for greater health infrastructure in the North East.

“I want to see us on the border get what we need, get the funding from the Federal Government and our two state governments on a new hospital - a single site hospital on the border,” she said.

More than half of us in Indi are are giving polling day the miss

GETTING IN EARLY: More than 68,000 (57.9 per cent) of Indi’s 117,571 eligible voters cast their choice early.

MORE than half of all eligible Indi voters were missing on polling day, having chosen instead to vote early at the electorate’s six pre-poll centres or via postal vote.

More than 68,000 (57.9 per cent) of Indi’s 117,571 eligible voters cast their choice early - with 17,635 (15 per cent) voting via post and 50,555 (43 per cent) at pre-poll.

Indi was in the top nine electorates across the country for early voting,

behind Hinker (QLD, 62.9%), Flinders (VIC, 61.3%), Fraser (VIC, 60.2%), Fisher (QLD, 60/1%), Maranoa (QLD, 59.2%), Longman (QLD, 59.2%), Dickson (QLD, 58.7%) and Bowman (QLD, 58.5%).

Nationally, according to the ABC’s chief election analyst Antony Green, a total of 2,731,060 postal vote applications had been received representing 15.9 per cent of enrolment.

This compares to 1,538,139 in 2019 or 9.4 per cent of enrolment.

Mr Green said final prepolls totalled 5,541,757, compared to a total of 4,778,856 in 2019.

There were just under a million votes taken on Friday, 923,852 in total and 208,000 more than on the final day in 2019.

Despite there being five fewer days of pre-polling in 2022 because of the change in the law, pre-poll votes nationally for 2022 represent 32.2 per cent of enrolled voters compared to 29.9 per cent in 2019.

Local voters favour Independent Haines

By GUS RIDDER DATA from the Australian Electoral Commission shows that booths in Euroa, Ruffy, Strathbogie and Violet Town all saw positive swings towards the Independent member for Indi, Helen Haines, in the two candidate preferred vote on Saturday.

Those four polling booths all recorded a two candidate preferred vote over 54 per cent for Dr Haines, with a 8.37 per cent swing in Euroa, a 22.87 per cent swing in Ruffy, a 5.50 per cent swing in Strathbogie and a 8.76 per cent swing in Violet Town.

Support for Dr Haines was also reflected in the first preference vote, where she recorded positive swings in all booths in these four areas.

1570 votes were counted at the St John’s Primary School polling booth in Euroa, with only nine votes separating Dr Haines and Liberal candidate Ross Lyman.

Dr Haines received 31.85

per cent of votes, while 31.25 per cent had chosen Mr Lyman as their first preference.

The difference between the two candidates was more significant at Strathbogie, Ruffy and Violet Town.

Strathbogie saw Helen Haines receive 42.59 per cent of the first preference votes while Mr Lyman received 27.38 per cent.

In Ruffy, Dr Haines received 49.32 per cent of the first preference votes.

Nationals candidate Liz Fisher actually had the second most first preference votes in Ruffy, ahead of Ross Lyman, with 18.49 per cent.

The polling station in Violet Town saw 35.26 per cent of the votes go towards Helen Haines, with Ross Lyman receiving the second most with 27.84 per cent of first preference votes.

These trends were similar to those found in other major areas of Indi, including the three polling booths of Wangaratta.

Dr Haines declined to comment on any agreement with the Labor Party in the event of a hung parliament, saying it was too early to discuss with votes still being counted.

When her win was called around 9.30pm on Saturday, Dr Haines spoke to a room filled with orange-clad volunteers at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, thanking them for their work.

“To win a seat as an Independent in the House of Representatives, it takes hope, it takes skill, it takes clever, brave people doing the work in their community,” she said.

“It takes moving out of your comfort zone and having the conversation, it takes knocking on a door when you’ve never knocked on those doors before.”

According to Dr Haines, their campaign had 1845 signed-up volunteers, 559 volunteers handed out how-to-vote cards on election day, and they had knocked every door in Wodonga and Wangaratta.

She said her campaign had 1251 donors, and they sold $37,000 worth of merchandise, most of it made by volunteers.

Liberal candidate already campaigning for 2025, others not so sure

By JEFF ZEUSCHNER LIBERAL candidate Ross Lyman was back out in the community this week, starting his campaign to re-contest the seat of Indi in 2025.

Mr Lyman, who rang Independent incumbent Helen Haines on Saturday evening to congratulate her on her win, said he was disappointed to a see a four per cent primary vote swing against his party in Indi - with the two party preferred difference roughly 60/40 favouring the incumbent - although he does expect the 17,000 postal votes yet to be counted to help reduce that divide.

Acknowledging the “bloodbath” at the national level, the former Army commando now Wahgunyah viticulture manager said his team would analyse what factors - local and national - had impacted on his ballot result.

“I began my campaign this election in January and the feedback we’ve got is that I need to be out there sooner, so I’m starting today for 2025,” he said, noting that working with the private sector and business community to get the economy firing would be a big part of his expected broad platform again.

“Obviously there has been a shift in society...it’s something the Liberal Party has to look at nationally.

“If people want to get to net zero (emissions) quicker than 2050...are happy to see taxes rise to get more renewables now.”

Mr Lyman said it would be a challenging environment for any government this term at the macro level, and whether Labor governed in its own right or in a minority government, it was likely to look after its own marginal seats, ahead of electorates such as Indi.

“We’ll see what focus Indi gets...Independents can’t deliver, that is what governments do,” he said.

Fellow Coalition candidate, Nationals’ Liz Fisher, was “devastated” to see traditional Nationals voters support the incumbent and also One Nation candidate, eroding her party’s primary Indi vote to below four per cent.

“I think there were some big picture issues at play...some Nationals may not like Barnaby Joyce or the pro mining policies,” she said.

“The Independent ran a very well funded campaign.

“I really see the Nationals as a party for rural and regional development, but clearly that is not resonating with people in towns.”

Ms Fisher said her candidacy since January had been a “very positive experience meeting so many good people”, she was looking forward to refocusing on ‘mum’ and farm duties, and was still keen to play her part of the party in the future, although that may not be as a candidate.

A 3.6 per cent swing against Labor to reduce its primary vote to 8.5 per cent in Indi was personally disappointing for candidate Nadia David, but she was excited by the national result which will see her party back in government after almost a decade.

“After all the months of work by myself and our small team of volunteers it is disappointing, but the Liberals and Nationals also suffered a backlash here,” the Beechworth academic said yesterday.

“I can see that a lot of our support went to Helen (Haines), who ran a much larger campaign and is a quality local member and I wish her all the best....I’m happy for her and for Indi.

“Potentially she could play a bigger part (if Labor in minor government)...she is a progressive and we’ve seen a progressive vote in Indi on matters of climate change, as well as an integrity commission which Labor has committed to get in place by Christmas.”

“I’ve had a lot of positive feedback but for now I’ll have a break and focus on getting my PhD,” she said.

First time Greens candidate Benjamin Gilbert said he was delighted with the outcome in Indi, and nationally, believing the results pointed to Australians’ desire to see more action on climate change.

“This has been a climate change election,” he said, “and Indi has been part of that progressive vote.

“People understood what Helen stood for.

“You can’t call Indi a conservative seat anymore.

“Helen and Cathy (McGowan) have shown that safe doesn’t exist if you are not on topic.”

The Yackandandah sculptor was delighted to see his party’s primary vote double in his hometown, and said an electorate-wide swing of around one per cent away from the Greens had been support for the incumbent’s shared vision on climate policies.

“I’ve really enjoyed the whole experience...it’s been very positive and for me it’s about doing what is right for the kids,” he said.

“I’d be happy to run again, unless someone younger than myself wanted to do it.”

Liberal Democrats candidate Julian Fidge said he was reasonably content with his support at the ballot box.

The Wangaratta GP had over two per cent of the primary vote counted, which was an improvement on his vote as an Australian Country Party candidate at the 2016 federal election.

He believed the party’s support was borne from its policies to stop lockdowns and vaccine mandates, and protect personal freedoms.

“These messages resonated with the electorate, I think you also saw that with the support for One Nation and the United Australia Party,” Dr Fidge said.

“I think the increased support for the incumbent comes from her stance on climate change and the integrity commission.”

Dr Fidge, who was wearing his cowboy hat giving out how to vote cards on polling day, said this election wouldn’t be his last rodeo.

“Liberal Democrats are a great party and I’d be keen to run again for them, if they’ll have me,” he said.

For United Australia Party candidate Stephen Williams, this was his first and last foray into politics.

The Tawonga business owner said he was “very disappointed” to see his party’s primary vote, under his candidacy, drop from around four per cent to around 2.5

Community Information Share your thoughts on Council’s role on January 26 Council is seeking the community’s advice on a review of traditional Australia Day celebrations.

Our aim is to be more respectful and to begin to recognise the significance of the day to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Council has partnered with community groups to deliver celebrations on January 26 for many years. These celebrations usually include a community gathering, barbeques, local performance and often community awards.

However, January 26 is a difficult day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The anniversary of this day marks the start of the dispossession and marginalisation of First Nations people.

Calls to shift the date of Australia Day have gained significant momentum over past years with the wider community growing increasingly aware that it is a day that many First Nations people find difficult or even offensive.

At Strathbogie Shire Council’s May Council Meeting, Council resolved to undertake community consultation on two different options relating to Council’s role on January 26.

Shire streetscape renewals underway THE streets of Avenel, Longwood and Euroa are set to receive a facelift with stage one of Council’s Streetscape Renewal Program getting underway.

Works have begun on the suggested upgrades which were established through an extensive engagement process with community members.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks said the works were in response to draft designs presented to the communities late last year.

“The draft designs were formulated based on initial community consultation which was undertaken in early 2021,” Cr Binks said.

“We then developed and

took these draft designs back out to our community for feedback via our online engagement platform Share Strathbogie.

“Council received lots of suggestions from residents on the draft designs and we were able to clearly understand what they wanted for the first stage to update the streetscapes of these three towns.

“Our contractors are ready to start works in Longwood followed by Avenel and Euroa and we anticipate that the works will be completed by late July, as long as the weather is kind to our contractors.

“For Strathbogie and Violet Town, we still need to

consolidate what residents prefer for their streetscape renewal.

“To do this, we’ll be calling for expression of interests from residents to join a working group to help us further develop their plans.

“These streetscape designs are an integral part of shaping a community’s identity and improving a sense of wellbeing and belonging.”

WINTER WONDERLAND: Ice skating will be coming to Euroa and Nagambie in June with a series of family friendly events.

Nagambie and Euroa to become winter wonderlands STRATHBOGIE Shire Council will be transforming Jacobson’s Outlook in Nagambie and the old Gambles Nursery Site in Euroa into a winter wonderland this June.

Council, Go Nagambie and the Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce are creating family friendly events that will bring ice skating to the Strathbogie Shire.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the free events were made possible after council received Victorian Government funding through the Outdoor Activation Fund.

“We then asked our community what they would like to see, and we heard that fun, family friendly, events were the priority,” Cr Binks said.

“We’re also hoping to include live music and there will be a virtual reality Swiss Alps activity, hot chocolate, mulled wine, photo booths, snow play and much more.”

The Winter Wonderland will include an ice-skating rink, set up with inflatable surrounds, skates, helmets, penguin trolleys for smaller children and experts to fit the skates and give instruction.

A booking system has

been established so locals and visitors can all enjoy the fun.

The Winter Wonderland will be held in Nagambie on Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12 at Jacobson’s Outlook, High Street Nagambie from 11am to 4pm.

It will then be set up for events in Euroa on Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19 at the old Gambles Nursery Site from 11am to 4pm.

Is it time to change the date?

By GUS RIDDER STRATHBOGIE Shire Council will begin community consultations to decide if they keep participating in Australia Day celebrations on January 26.

This consultation will discuss two possible options with the community.

The first option will be to leave January 26 as is, and the second option will be to begin a process of ending council participation with events on that date.

Council chief executive officer Julie Salomon said the issue had been a part of the agenda for council to discuss.

“The report on the agenda is intended to start a formal consultation process with the Strathbogie shire community in regards to the way in which council marks January 26, out of respect for First Nations people,” she said.

“This option is also consistent with the community vision and the inclusivity goals developed by the Strathbogie shire community with specific reference to respect, inclusion and First Nations people.”

Council director of community and planning Amanda Tingay summarised the matter during the meeting.

“For First Nations Australians, January 26 marks the beginning of invasion and dispossession,” she said.

“Celebratory events can cause pain, suffering and commemorate the loss of their sovereign rights to their land, loss of family and loss of

right to practice their culture.

“Historically, Strathbogie shire has supported community-led Australia Day celebrations on January 26 with communities holding events that incorporate awards, entertainment and guest speakers as well as the shire providing shire-wide Australia Day awards.”

The motion called for council endorsement to undertake consultation with Australia Day committees in the shire as well as broader community consultation around the shire’s involvement in January 26 events.

This recommendation also noted that officers would continue their communications with the registered Aboriginal parties in the local government area.

If council were not to participate in January 26 events, committees and groups looking to seek funding from council would apply directly to the National Australia Day council for funding rather than council who usually liaise between the groups.

Councillors stated this would not prevent Australia Day events from occurring, only that council would not be directly involved or funding the events.

The reaction to the announcement has been mixed within the community.

Euroa local Shirley Saywell said the decision was a step in the right direction for council.

“Firstly, I want to applaud council for being brave and bold and for listening to the community,” she said.

“I was one of the community

Shire resident Kate Auty agreed that it was an important step for the community.

“It’s the sort of thing as a community we ought to reach out and embrace,” she said.

“It’s about being compassionate.

“If we go back and look at what January 26 actually means, we’re going to find blood on the wattle.”

Sheans Creek resident Frank York was less than thrilled with the decision.

“If the council isn’t leading or participating in Australia Day proceedings, then who will,” he said.

“I’m disappointed and concerned by the process of how the decision was made.

“We need to divorce the politics and cancel culture from the day.

“Australia Day to me is a day where all Australians can join together and celebrate how lucky they are.

“I disagree with the notion of ‘invasion day’.

“We have enough things to worry about in modern life that we shouldn’t be worrying over something from 250 years ago that we have no control or responsibility over.”

Cr Sally Hayes-Burke moved the motion during the meeting, with it being seconded by Cr Paul Murray.

Cr Hayes-Burke discussed how discussions would progress once the motion was carried.

“We’re going out into the community; we’re not cancelling Australia Day,” she said.

“Anyone can celebrate that if they wish but hopefully we’ll start the conversation and hopefully educate the community about what the true history is for Aboriginal people.”

Cr Reg Dickinson was the lone opposition to the motion, citing that it required more consultation with the First Nations community prior to being put to the wider public.

V/Line dramas a symptom of neglect ACCORDING to shadow minister for public transport Steph Ryan, regional train passengers are again wearing the consequences of decades of neglect of V/Line after a state–wide communications outage forced the entire network to a standstill last week.

Ms Ryan said commuters deserve a full explanation of what caused the ‘communications fault‘ that suspended all train services for 90 minutes, including to Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Gippsland and Seymour.

Last week‘s major disruption follows a recent campaign by disability advocates to highlight the inaccessibility of the ancient V/Line fleet, with some Victorians left traumatised after being forced to travel in the cargo carriage because there was no safe place for their wheelchair.

Democracy and women rise up IT was a great weekend for Australian Democracy and Australian women.

Australians have spoken, and started to take back our rightful ownership of the Federal Government.

The Liberal Party, the National Party and the Labor Party have treated us as being unable to know what is best for us.

The so called Canberra bubble.

The people have spoken, mostly through independent candidates who were actually listening to their constituents.

It saddens me to have seen in this campaign, so much mudslinging and so many lies being foisted on us as voters, in the belief that we are lacking the intelligence to disbelieve those lies.

What an insult.

The local increase for the support for Helen Haines in Indi is a clear example of the people having the sense to see that she is truly independent, and the huge increase in her volunteer team of supporters gives credence to her belief in community consultation.

To the amazing Cathy McGowan, who with her amazing nest of siblings started the movement to make Australian democracy great again, I say thank you, as do the thousands of supporters of Helen Haines in Indi.

Construction begins on $3.8m Nagambie Foreshore Walk COUNCIL has begun construction on the Nagambie Foreshore Walk with an anticipated completion date for later this year.

Work on the $3.8 million project began last week on the land component of the development which includes the installation of a concrete shared pathway on various public land sections overlooking Lake Nagambie.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said the fully accessible pathway would stretch for 1.6km along the southern edge of Lake Nagambie.

“The pathway will be 2.5m wide to allow pedestrians and cyclists to share the walkway and ensure it is enjoyed by all alike,” Cr Binks said.

“There will also be seating areas at intervals along the pathway so people can stop and take in the incredible views of Lake Nagambie.

“The walk will also feature solar lighting mounted on bollards to allow accessible usage at night where walkers or cyclists can enjoy the views of

Nationals retain Nicholls

By GUS RIDDER SAM Birrell of the Nationals has fought off Independent candidate Rob Priestly in a closely contested election for the seat of Nicholls.

Mr Birrell was selected as the candidate for the Nationals following the retirement of Damian Drum at the end of 2021.

Under Mr Drum, Nicholls had been a comfortable Nationals electorate with a 20 per cent vote margin at the time of his retirement.

A conservative strong-hold, the seat has been held by the Nationals since 2016 and held by either the Nationals (including Country Party) or the Liberal Party since the electorate’s formation before the 1972 federal election.

The results from this year’s election show the Nationals with just 54.6 per cent of votes, highlighting an enormous shift in the electorate that could have consequences in future elections.

The downward swing of 24 per cent for the Nationals will certainly give confidence for future challenges and campaigns by the other parties in upcoming elections.

Independent candidate Rob Priestly saw a 25.7 per cent swing, while Liberal candidate Steve Brooks also saw his campaign record a 17.9 per cent swing for his party.

The Avenel polling booth had Mr Birrell receiving 28.91 per

cent of first preference votes ahead of Liberal candidate Steve Brooks with 20.77 per cent and Mr Priestly with 17.99 per cent.

In Longwood, Mr Birrell received 33.49 per cent of the first preference vote, with Rob Priestly receiving 27.36 per cent of the votes.

Grand reopening for Euroa cinema AFTER months of undergoing refurbishments, the historical Euroa Community Cinema will reopen to the public with a special event planned to celebrate the occasion.

The cinema closed last year during a time when Victoria was experiencing ongoing restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Strathbogie Shire Council says it was the perfect chance to give the historical building a facelift.

The refurbishments included sanding and polishing the timber flooring, new seating was installed with the historical seating remaining in the front section, the walls were painted, and the curtains were cleaned.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was exciting that the refurbishments could now be shared with the community.

“We are so excited to host our grand reopening of the cinema this month after much anticipation,” Cr Binks said.

“The cinema is such a special part of our community and is a fantastic way to spend your weekend.

“We will be screening the film Downton Abbey: A New Era (PG) which will be a fantastic event; tickets are free for this amazing reopening weekend so get in fast before

you miss out.”

During the screenings a series of short films will be played with the previews.

These films were created by locals who participated in the Smartphone Stories Workshop last year.

“The Smartphone Stories project is a two-year travelling workshop series, visiting 24 locations across Victoria and empowering people to tell own stories using smartphones,” Cr Binks said.

The project is supported by the VicHealth Everyday Creative Partnerships program with Strathbogie Shire Council, presented by Cinespace in partnership with City of Port Phillip.

Additional funding during the COVID-19 pandemic was received from the Australia Council for the Arts.

The reopening will be held on Saturday, May 28 at 7.30pm, with a follow-up event being held the next day at 4pm.

The Euroa Community Cinema is located at 1B Bury Street, Euroa and tickets for the free event can be booked via https://www.trybooking. com/BZPHN. The Euroa Community Cinema refurbishment project was funded through the Victorian Government’s Creative Victoria program, delivered by Regional Development Victoria.

Shire celebrates volunteer week WITH hilarious comedians, line dancing, indoor bowls and so much more, Strathbogie Shire’s volunteers celebrated in style for National Volunteers Week.

Events were held across the shire throughout the week to thank the community’s volunteers with entertainment and a free ticket to the newly re-opening Euroa Community Cinema.

Kicking off the week was a hilarious performance from Greg Champion at the Violet Town Bowls Club.

A full house of volunteers enjoyed the frivolities of the former ‘Couldabeen Champions’ radio show host.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Laura Binks said it was great to see so many people enjoying the event.

“We also had a lovely time at Avenel where volunteers were challenged to a few ends of bowls before a sandwich lunch,” Cr Binks said.

“The Third Age Club in Euroa hosted a luncheon and a musical afternoon that even included some impromptu bootscooting.

“Our lovely Longwood volunteers spent the evening playing an indoor bowls competition and the week was capped off with a dinner event at the Nagambie Bowls Club featuring musical entertainment.”

Cr Binks said the week was a fantastic reminder of why volunteering is such an important activity, both for individuals

Redress for abuse victims CHILDREN who suffer emotional, physical and psychological abuse in Victorian orphanages should be eligible for redress payments, according to Wangaratta-based state MP Tania Maxwell.

Speaking in parliament last week, Ms Maxwell called on the State Government to introduce redress schemes similar to reparations recently announced for mothers who had their children forcibly removed when born out of wedlock, and for Aboriginal Victorians removed from their families before 1977.

“The government has announced a number of redress schemes for those harmed by historical actions from state policies and practices,” she said.

“These schemes will provide $100,000 in redress to each person who experienced harm by these practices.

“Care leavers hold no grudge against others who have been given redress, but it is hard for them not to feel envy and disappointment that their own harm is not being recognised in a similar way.

“Care leavers Australasia Network has long campaigned for recognition and redress to extend from sexual abuse, which the commonwealth’s nation redress scheme covers, to physical and emotional abuse that so many endured in our state institutions.”

A 2004 senate inquiry into children in institutional care recommended a joint commonwealth and state fund be developed to pay reparations to victims of trauma in orphanages, however, Ms Maxwell contended action had yet to be taken.

“It recommended redress, and then-premier Steve Bracks delivered an apology on behalf of Victoria in 2006, including a commitment to work with survivors of abuse and neglect in care to promote the healing process,” she said.

“Progress has stalled since and, in the absence of commonwealth action, Victoria could - and should - lead the way.”

Sport vouchers to help kids play

By GUS RIDDER MORE vouchers for sporting equipment, uniforms and memberships are being made available as part of a plan from the Andrews Labor Government to reduce the cost of getting in the game for thousands of Victorian families.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence last week announced $12.3 million for the continuation of the popular Get Active Kids Voucher Program through to June 2023.

The program reduces out-ofpocket expenses associated with participation in community sport by providing eligible parents and guardians with a $200 voucher to help offset the costs of membership, registration, uniforms and equipment.

Ms Spence spoke about the importance of this program and encouraging sports in the community.

“Every Victorian deserves the chance to be active and that’s why we’re boosting our efforts to remove the financial barrier facing many families keen to get their kids involved in community sport,” she said.

“More vouchers mean more families can get their kids playing the sports they love.”

Data from the first three rounds of the program showed that almost 30 per cent of children who received a voucher joined a local sporting club for the first time and about 45 per cent also indicated they would not have been able

to take part without the financial support.

So far, the program has issued more than 55,000 vouchers, providing more opportunities for kids to get active, try new things and learn more skills.

Parents now only need to apply for the vouchers online before redeeming them at a registered Get Active Kids Voucher Activity Provider - such as a local sporting club or organisation.

Hockey Victoria Andrew Skillern chief executive officer said the initiative was integral in creating a more inclusive environment within the sport.

“Hockey Victoria and our association clubs pride ourselves on being inclusive, and we’re proud

to support this initiative that opens more doors for young Victorians to tap into all the benefits grassroots hockey offers,” he said.

Rosie King, the CEO of Netball Victoria, agreed that the program was helping kids play much needed sport.

“Netball is a game for everyone - that’s why we’re proud to support the Get Active Kids initiative, creating opportunities for even more kids to get involved in our sport,” she said.

Registered activity providers must be affiliated with a recognised State Sporting Association or equivalent governing body and can lodge voucher codes with the Labor Government to be credited the costs.

Online waste education events coming up THE Goulburn Valley region will be hosting several online waste education events for interested community members.

This week, there was a ‘rethink recycling’ session held.

This online session allowed attendees to take a peek at what happens to our recycling and gave advice on what you can do locally to make a difference.

The session involved a virtual tour of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), showing it in action as a series of conveyor belts, material specific machines, massive trommels and hard-working manual sorters made light work of separating co-mingled recycling before pushing it back into our circular economy.

There are still several upcoming events for those who missed out on the recycling session as a series of food waste webinars will be held in early June.

A big slice of food waste in Victoria is bread and baked goods.

In fact, Victorian households bin the equivalent of 125 million loaves, or $800 million of bread, each year; and bread is the third highest food waste contributor to climate change, after meat and dairy.

The program is open to Victorian children aged up to 18 who are named on a valid Commonwealth health care card or pensioner concession card and named on a valid Medicare card at the time of application.

A special consideration stream is also available to support children in care, temporary or provisional visa holders, undocumented migrants and international students up to 18 years at the time of application.

Applications for the current round close at 5pm on Tuesday, May 31.

“Spirit Matters” “WORK IT OUT.” The Bible says, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil His good purpose.” (Phil. 3:12-13) This almost sounds like a contradiction but instead, it’s a paradox. G.K Chesterton described a paradox as ‘truth standing on its head to get attention.’

The key to understanding this particular paradox, lies in the little word ‘out’.

Notice that the Bible plainly teaches that salvation isn’t something we can work ‘for’; salvation isn’t something we can earn, because it is the free gift of Gods’ grace. (Ephes.2:8-9) When Paul says to work ‘out’ he is talking about a ‘spiritual working out’.

During a physical workout, you develop and tone the muscles God has already given you. To ‘work out’ means to grow and make the most of what you have already. Paul is saying develop your spiritual life! God has His part in our spiritual growth and we have a apart. He provides the power, but we must access it, flip the switch and let it flow through our lives to fulfill His will for us.

Pauls tells us, ‘All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true; and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we’re wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work.” (2 Tim 3:16-17) We sorely need Gods’ wisdom today.

The tale is told of a converted cannibal in the South Sea Islands, sitting by a large pot reading a Bible when an anthropologist approached and asked him what he was doing. The man replied ‘I’m reading the Bible.” The other scoffed, saying, ‘don’t you know that modern, civilised man has rejected that book? You shouldn’t waste your time reading it!’ The man looked him up and down and slowly replied, “Sir, if it weren’t for this book-you’d be in that pot!’

The Word of God had changed the mans’ life and his appetite. If you’re serious about changing your life, you have to get into the Bible. Read, study, memorise, meditate, speak it and apply it. That’s how faith grows. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Rom. 10:17). The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to make us more like the Son of God. Diary Date: the 25th year of Violet Town’s BIGGEST MORNING TEA will be at the Violet Town Community Complex on Wednesday, June 22 starting at 2.30 pm. $5 entry, all welcome.

There will be a trading table and raffle with all proceeds going to cancer research.

Violet Town RSL subbranch organised a visit to the Shrine in Melbourne last week, a special occasion which commemorated our local lad Driver Ramage who took part in WW1 in the Serbian theatre of war.

No sausage sizzle on Federal election day at Violet Town, and no new phone book this election either.

There is an opportunity for fundraising for the state election in November.

The Violet Town CFA Brigade held its first social event in ages as COVID kept getting in the way.

‘Push for Better’ to support mental health in community

By GUS RIDDER MEMBERS of the Euroa community are joining together to help shine a spotlight on the number of Australians who died by suicide in recent years.

One way that awareness and funds are being raised is by getting fit and doing a push-up challenge.

The Euroa Gym is challenging people to complete 3139 push-ups over 24 days in June.

This number is representative of how many people died by suicide in the past year.

You can aim for 25, 50, 75 or 100 per cent of the pushup target and other exercise

alternatives are welcome.

Complete your push-ups any time and any place and you can track your push-ups using a phone app, Push for Better.

The challenge also provides a way for people in the community to learn about mental health.

Each day, you will learn about mental health as the push-up target relates to a vital mental health statistic in Australia.

For example, 135 pushups is relevant because one recent analysis of scientific evidence suggests that three 45-minute exercise sessions per week (135 minutes total) is enough to provide anti-depressant benefits to mental

Victoria still faces COVID-19 year three with significantly distressing numbers of deaths, hospitalisations, high infection rates and serious staff issues in many businesses and services, including health.

This Friday, May 27 from 5pm to 6.30pm, the Avenel Primary School is holding a ‘Family Pi Night’.

Families will have the opportunity to participate in a range of fun mathematical activities.

Drinks will be available for $2 on the night.

This Saturday, May 28 will have a live piano treat in the evening.

A recital of local piano students will be held at the Avenel Memorial Hall on Queen Street from 6pm to 7.30pm for free.

This Sunday, May 29 from 9am to 2pm will hold a ‘Come Fishing Day’.

This fun, free, family fishing day will be at the Euroa Arboretum with a barbecue and refreshments available.

Euroa Third Age Club members enjoy music from local trio THE Third Age Club wishes to thank the Strathbogie Shire for providing funds for the club to hold their afternoon of entertainment and refreshments for their volunteers.

This was a well-attended event, with everyone in attendance enjoying the music

and joining in singing the songs of Greg Dudley, Jimmy and Jarryd Davidson and Trevor Joyce.

More thanks go to Tiffany and Rachel from the shire who helped set up the hall and to Roma and Pam who served tea and coffees throughout the event.

The cakes and sandwiches from Mawsons Bakery quickly vanished and were greatly enjoyed by all.

At the April Third Age Club meeting it was decided that general meetings would go back to being held monthly rather than every two months.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 1.30pm.

All members are welcome, with anyone interested encouraged to attend, find out the future plans of the club and catch up with old friends.

Exercise classes continue

at the club on Wednesdays at 3.30pm.

The June lunch for the club will be held at Flam Shan on Thursday, June 9 at 12pm.

Ride the Ranges still a favourite among cyclists

By HEATHER BAMFORD THE annual Ride the Ranges event was held over the Anzac long weekend with some 150 riders taking part.

This was slightly less than previous years, however, those that did enter continue to enjoy the ride and were very forthcoming with their praise for how the event is run.

Event organiser Neil Tubb discussed the low participation.

“It is somewhat disappointing that the numbers were down,” he said.

“There were a number of factors that may have caused people not to enter, the Anzac weekend may

have been one.”

Although this may have been seen as a plus for the event, some past riders indicated that the long weekend was a chance for them to do ‘family things’.

Ride the Ranges offers three rides - a shorter 30km ride with no hills and the 85km ride which does include the climb from Violet Town to the Creek Junction Road.

The longer 130km includes further climbs along Ankers Road before descending down the beautiful Strathbogie Road.

The Rotary Club of Euroa will continue to further develop the ride which is held on the last Sunday in April.

Noble discussed the event and the fundraising involved in it.

“This is the club’s major fundraiser this year,” he said.

“We have had to postpone our ‘long lunch’ at Killeen, so opportunities to raise funds for community projects have been limited.”

The event this year raised $7000 which will be used on local community projects.

The Rotary Club of Euroa is particularly thankful to the local sponsors who supported the ride.

Ausure of Euroa, who was the event’s major sponsor, and Miepol Traffic Management were integral for their very generous contribution of signage and traffic control.

GVFL NETBALL EUROA A GRADE A GRADE had a hard-fought win, with four of their usual players unavailable this week.

The Magpies had the upper hand in the first quarter, looking settled all over the court.

Sophie Owen worked tirelessly in the attack end with excellent feeding into the shooters. Kyabram stepped it up in the second and third quarter, pulling back the margin to see the scores level leading into the last quarter.

However, the Euroa girls stayed composed under pressure and managed to win 41-44.

Tylah Marchbank was exceptional in defence, creating the opportunities for the Magpies to take the lead.

Eliza Hoare worked hard through the mid court to transition the ball, with the shooters standing strong to convert the critical turnovers.

The girls will be looking forward to gaining some players back after the bye when they take on Benalla at Memorial Oval.

With a lot of turn overs, the second quarter saw the Magpies start to fall behind, despite the defence end creating lots of opportunities for the team.

Katy Frewen was strong all day in the defence end, turning over consistent balls for her team.

Elisha Kubeil worked hard at Wing Defence, assisting in transition to Tayla Robinson who was tireless in her efforts at Wing Attack.

Unfortunately, it was not Euroa’s day on Sunday, going down by 10 at the final siren.

Arriving in Kyabram under bright blue skies, the Magpies were keen to take on the 7th placed Bombers on their home turf.

Unfortunately, another slow start meant the Euroa team were playing catch up netball for the majority of the game.

Sienna Trotter showed her versatility, playing both ends of the court with skill and determination, and certainly not shying away from the physicality of the game.

Sienna goaled, and then defended, with alacrity.

Abby Harrison had another ripping game in the mid court, moving and positioning well.

She was able to repeatedly find space in the crowded centre third, a reliable option for the Euroa centre pass.

Lily Meehan had an excellent game at wing defence.

Lily may not be a huge fan of that particular position by she certainly plays it well- a steady and encouraging presence in what is often a frantic and pressure filled area of the court.

The first quarter and a half were the downfall for the Magpies this week, a break in focus that GVFL netball simply does not allow.

For the remainder of the game, the Euroa team matched their opponents in both skill and score.

Next week is a muchneeded break due to the Interleague round, a chance to recharge the batteries and reset positive mindsets, a chance to be fully prepared for the next game against Benalla at home, which sources say could be a genuine chance of a win.

Thomson visits and scores 38 points STRATHBOGIE GOLF CLUB

By ROB BROWNLEE THE golf last Saturday week was played in very cold and wet conditions, it was surprising that anyone ventured out, however, that did not stop Rylie Mc Donald winning the stableford completion with 34 points.

Lineballs were won by Peter Phillps with 31 and Gary Hewlett with 29 points.

Nearest the pins: 4th was retained by the Club, 8th Rylie Mc Donald, 15th Club, 17th Gary Hewlett..

Ladies drive and pitch was won by Kerry Hewlett.

Straightest drive went to her husband Gary Hewlett.

On Tuesday, May 10 only a small field played due to the weather conditions, and the comp was won by Carmel Linglan on 32 points on a count back from Richard Hayes.

The club hosted the Vets Inter zone Championship on Monday, May 16 the North East recorded a comfortable win with an aggregate of 715, top score for the North East was Geoff Nicholls and Greg Courley with 38 points each.

Ron Wilkinson 36 points and Greg Birks with 35 points, which led Goulburn Valley and Dalhousie. Best scores came from Jeff Ranger with 37 points and Gary Raft with 36 points.

The second round of the Wally Dunn Trophy was played on Saturday, May 21, stableford was the game played in sunny conditions.

We had one visitor Allistair Thomson join us, he obviously has been playing a lot in Melbourne since he left us as he won the men’s comp with 38 points.

The ladies winner was Kerry Hewlett playing with her new clubs with 29 points.

Lineballs were won by Shae van der Schoor and Greg Roberts both with 31 points.

Greg had a field day as he also won the drive and pitch and the straightest drive.

A strange thing happened on the Saturday, May 18 during the round, a ball somehow came to rest on the roof of the water tank, our vicecaptain was trying in every way possible to get a favourable ruling he got lucky as the area was deemed GUR. The Strathbogie Ladies Bowl is to be played on Thursday, May 26, we hope

for good weather and a big field.

Golf next Saturday, May 28is par with Mick Dixey looking after proceedings.

The winner of A grade was Irene Keogh with 34 pts.

The winner of B & C Grade was Jane Bow with 35 pts, Jane also won the monthly medal.

The 9 hole winner was Carol Wallis with 19pts.

18 hole balls went to Jane 35pts, Irene 34 pts and Maureen King also 34 pts.

9 hole balls went to Carol 19 pts, Maureen 17 pts and Irene 17 pts.

Maureen also had N/P on the 13 th.

The 9 hole winner was also Moz on a C/B from Anne Burns with 15 pts.

The Captains aggregate Trophy winner for round 1 was Anne Burns with 34 pts .

The overall winner of the Captains Aggregate was Moz with 64 pts, Chicken Run Results Thursday, May 12: There were 16 players with the winner being Gareth Bow - 1. on a C/B. There were no N/P. Results Thursday 19th May. There were 25 players.

The winner was Ark Wilson 40/30.5 and the runner up was Terry Clonan 48/37.5.

N/P winners were Chris Roberts on the 13th and Terry Clonan on the 26th.

The second week of the Finnigan four ball provided plenty of drama while sorting out the men from the boys the Nagambie course once again played long, making scoring tough for the majority. Michael Sloan became a five time winner of the event with partner Daniel Hall claiming his first, the pair sat quietly and patiently on a +2 result after round one, only to light it up in round two with the day’s best result a +8 for a two week +10 total and

win the Finnigan four ball by two.

Runners up went to Des Phelan and Michael Mensfeld, week one leaders with +6 this pair battled their way round all day never giving in only to fall short with +2 for a two week total +8, it was a solid round tee to green with the pairs undoing coming on the tricky greens throughout the round.

Doug Neville and Wayne Le Cerf were once again prominent with a second week +7 the long standing pairing finally utilising their massive handicaps for some good after a -1 first week to finish +6 total and finish third.

Well done to everyone that competed in this year’s event it is always a tough challenge and a most sought after award for all the clubs members, our five time winner Michael Sloan was heard saying the renaming of the event has merit with suggestions such as The Michael Sloan Big Day Out or the Michael Sloan Cup, all very worthy of consideration.

The nearest the pins went to ‘Spike’ Nolan on the narrow 3rd, Shane McCormick firing one home on the 13th and Terry Lowis as so often is the case taking out the 16th.

Junior netballers play hard against tough competition GVJFL JUNIORS UNDER 15 THE under 15 Euroa Magpies played away against Broadford on Sunday.

Euroa started strongly in the first quarter, with Ella Hill scoring the first goal to set the girls up for what looked to be a close match.

The mid court, Caitlin Crowe & Maya Embling worked well to feed the ball into the attacking end with Martha McKellar & Ella converting goals in the tightly contested quarter.

The Pittock sisters Maggie & Charli along with Georgia Taresch worked hard in defence to stop Broadford’s scoring opportunities, keeping the game within two goals.

In the second quarter everyone worked really hard to keep the scores close.

Bronti & Ella moved well in the goal ring adding five goals to the Euroa scoreboard.

Maggie and Martha worked solid in defence and had plenty of support through the middle of the court by Caitlin, Georgia & Maya.

Despite the team’s best efforts, Broadford continued to extend their lead by eight goals.

Broadford came out strong in the third quarter and managed to run away with the

The defenders and midcourt worked tirelessly to keep up a strong defence.

The girls continued to work hard in the final quarter, with the defenders trying everything to hold Broadford to a seven goal quarter.

Determination and strong contested plays within the midcourt saw the girls play a solid quarter without the rewards they deserved in the goals.

The Magpies trailed all game but put in a great effort as a team for the entire match.

Unfortunately Broadford proved too strong for Euroa, final score Broadford 37 defeated Euroa 16.

UNDER 13 THE under 13 Magpies netball side lowered its colours to home-side Broadford on Sunday.

It was the side’s first defeat for the season, going down to the Kangaroos by four goals.

Defenders Jade Raleigh and Issy Smyth fought hard to the final whistle to keep the Magpies in the game but it wasn’t quite enough to get Euroa over the line.

UNDER 11

BACK OF THE RING: Under 15 goal attack Ella Hill takes a shot at goal.

THE under 11’s travelled to sunny Broadford this week, experiencing the new sporting complex.

Grace Burden was the captain for the day, and showed consistency and commitment in the goal ring.

The first goal of the match went to Grace, and she very quickly backed it up with four more goals.

Evie Buchanan and Sissy Davey demonstrated some great defence throughout the quarter.

Broadford defended well into half time, but remained scoreless. The second quarter for Euroa, had Sissy Davey and Audrey Anderson shooting well.

Third quarter, and the Burden triplets & Mia Holmes were dynamite in the centre,

defending so quickly and getting the ball into the ring, for Grace Burden to shoot four more goals.

Asha Embling defended well in the goal ring, and Broadford, kept persisting in the goal ring, but unable to convert.

The final quarter was brilliant.

Evie Buchanan played centre and she covered the court incredibly well.

With a fast pace, Evie, Audrey and Sissy were on fire.

Broadford continued to defend really well, but unfortunately the goals didn’t arrive.

The entire team were communicating so well throughout the match, and this quarter their hard work paid off.

All of the girls continued to play exceptionally well, and

Broadford kept them on their toes all match.

Sissy Davey shot six goals, taking the final score to 19 to O. Coach Caitlin kept the Euroa team motivated all match.

FOOTBALL EUROA UNDER 13 PERFECT weather conditions at Broadford on Sunday saw the boys and girls have an easy win.

Euroa dominated in the centre throughout the game which saw smooth plays through to the forward line.

The Pies continued to swoop down on the Roos with E Saxon dominating the centre clearance with great ruck work from S. Holden.

With a strong lead going into the second half of the game, Coach Damien Saxon told the team to not worry about the scoreboard and just enjoy the game and have some fun out on the field, much to the delight of the players.

Next week we host The Wondong Warriors at home.

Under 11 netballers giving Shepparton competition their best UNDER 11 NETBALL SATURDAY COMPETITION TEAM ONE A COOL morning greeted the players and support squad for the match against GVGS on Saturday morning.

Isla Hahnel had the honour as the captain for the day and her words of wisdom clearly worked.

The Euroa girls shot out of the blocks and at quarter time led 6-0.

The pressure was strong all over the court resulting in some beautiful goals to Bethan.

Lara Saxon excelled in defence with numerous intercepts.

Really strong passages of play were great to watch.

In the second quarter some lovely passing into the circle saw Isla and Bethan combining well to see some more goals added to the score.

All girls were playing excellent defence, sticking tight on their opponents.

Ellie Robinson a tower of strength around the ball.

At halftime the girls had extended their lead 11-1.

A few positional changes saw Asha have chance in goals and Isla having a run in centre, covering lots of territory.

Great work from Maisy through the mid court, gathering in any loose balls and sending them forward again.

Small in stature but huge in effort, Maisy gives her all every

week against bigger, stronger opponents.

Lovely flowing end to end netball was fantastic and a credit to all players.

Grace Hill and Lara led the way in the last with some brilliant defensive work to gain the ball back for Euroa.

Grace never gave her opponent an inch of space.

Asha stepping into the team worked hard and finished the game strongly, thanks Asha.

TEAM TWO FIRST QUARTER IN fantastic weather conditions the Euroa team were eager to play given the previous week’s game had been cancelled to due to poor weather.

Guthrie Street’s attacking game kept the Euroa defence in Leila Thompson and Daisy Cameron very busy. A relatively even quarter as both teams settled in, Guthrie Street scoring two goals.

Euroa - 0 Guthrie Street- 2 SECOND QUARTER Brianna Maher shot Euroa’s first goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter.

Isla Moore provided her teammates ample opportunities whilst managing to score Euroa’s second goal.

Leila Thomson and Zara Hill continued to work hard across the court.

Euroa - 2 Guthrie Street- 5 THIRD QUARTER Chloe Squires moved into the backline limiting the opposition to only two goals for the quarter.

Zara Hill combined well with Bridie Simpson and Isla Moore.

Daisy Cameron was on the receiving end of some fantastic teamwork resulting in her shooting both Euroa’s two goals for the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER Coach Bec Squires provided the team with a pep talk that inspired the team and made some minor changes.

Bridie Simpson and Brianna Maher executed some excellent passes and moved around the court.

Chloe Squires continued her efforts in defence keeping Guthrie Street goalless for the quarter. Daisy Cameron and Leila Thompson scoring a goal each, at the final siren Euroa had clawed their way back, however just falling short.

Who reigns supreme; team of ‘82 or ‘12?

THIS Saturday will see two teams celebrate premierships from two vastly different eras, the 1982 fairytale win over an undefeated team and a super powerful undefeated team convincingly saluting.

In 1982 Bonnie Doon were destined to end their premiership drought, undefeated all year including a thumping 10 goal win in the second semi final against Violet Town, there was no stopping the bulldogs.

On grand final day, as it was back, then a melee erupted early in the first quarter maybe initiated by the towners.

From then on, the favourites chased tails and before the knew it the towners couldn’t be caught, in a huge upset the Violet Town team led by the wily Tony Levy and a young gun in Andrew Knowles (21) hung on to win 13.10.88 to 10.13 73, our first flag since 1961.

In 2012 son of club great Ray “Daffy” Lamaro, Haydon, led a team that took all before them, undefeated all year they comfortably lifted the cup with an emphatic 76 point win

in the grand finale against Undera, the first premiership and champions in the club’s history, 23.18.156 to Undera 11.14.80 and arguably one of the greatest KDFL sides of all time.

So, the question, who wins if these two premiership teams were to meet on a hot sunny day in mid-September both in their primes; 1982 or 2012?

And it was a different game 30 years ago, in 82 a player could just go to sleep behind play for no apparent reason so a good player could find himself wacked with the ball at the other end.

All in brawls were common, there was no send off rule, it was tough and hard, that’s not saying the 2012 couldn’t handle that, a bloke like Tim Ross would have fitted into the 1982 side easily as would Saddington, Sean & Pat Horsburgh, Gleeson and Sage.

As would the likes of Knowles, Tatterson, Fulton and Anderson in the 2012 side.

So, who wins? I reckon there would’ve been a good old fashioned stoush at the start of the game, 82 would lead at half time then the skill and fitness of 2012 would start to take control, scores level at three quarter time.

Longwood face off against Rushworth

By PATRICK O’MEARA SENIORS Longwood has locked in a date for AFL premiership hero Cameron Mooney to line-up for the club.

The Leggers, who secured the Geelong and North Melbourne premiership player through the ‘Carlton Draft’, have confirmed the key position star will lace up against arch-rival Violet Town at Redlegs Stadium on July 23.

LONGWOOD LEGEND GOES OUT WITH A BANG: Longwood reserves star Jeremy Lewis kicked the final goal to seal the win for the Redlegs on the weekend before hanging up his boots in retirement.

The appearance of the man once dubbed the ‘Big Hairy Cat’ will coincide with the Past Players and Supporters Day. On Saturday, the Leggers were left to rue a disastrous second quarter where Rushworth claimed complete ascendancy.

The other three quarters saw the Leggers more than hold their own, despite horrible inaccuracy in front of goal.

The Redlegs had just four less scoring shots than Rushworth, who ran away sizable victors.

Better performances came from Matt Ranger, Reece Dimech and the Cumberland brothers - Ryan and Josh.

RESERVES THIS week the reserves welcome back some players from injury and illness. We came up

against a gallant Rushworth side that challenged us all day.

The Leggers got off to a great start kicking five goals to two in the first quarter.

In the second and third we would add another two in each quarter.

Finally in the last we got on top, kicking five goals to run out winners of almost 10 goals. One inclusion was captain Beauden Webber kicking four goals in a best on ground performance, Daniel McCrimmon, Ty Howard and Brad Dowell were also solid inclusions for the home side.

Jeremy Lewis hung up the boots at the end of the game with him kicking the final goal of the game; we now look forward to greeting our next challenge Shepparton East.

UNDER 18

THE thirds came up against a top quality side in Dookie that were too tall and too strong, but our boys never gave up and fought it out until the end.

Our better players were Dakota Pellegrino, Cooper Guilder, and our skipper jack McDonald UNDER 13 A TOUGH day at the office for the U13 footballers with the bigger Rushworth kids dominating the game.

They stuck at it and battled hard but failed to get too much momentum going their way.

Highlights were Harry Bennetts evasive skills although they finally caught him and Tom Macdermids determination.

Hopefully a better result next week.

Strathbogie Golf Club hosts veteran golfers for Ralph Sneyd trophy ON Monday, May 16 the veteran golfers of North East, Dalhousie and Goulburn Valley districts competed for the Ralph Sneyd trophy in an intra-zone challenge, at Strathbogie golf course.

This event is decided on the aggregate stableford score of the top 30 players of each

team, and this is the 31st staging of the event.

The trophy was named to remember the work that Ralph Sneyd (late of Wangaratta) did to promote the sport for veteran golfers including the role of president of the Victorian Veteran Golfers Association in 1993 and 1994.

The weather was as forecast with a cool cloudy day and fortunately the occasional very light drizzle hardly warranted the deployment of umbrellas.

The volunteers at Strathbogie are to be congratulated for presenting the course in such fine condition despite

the lack of autumn rain that has left all the course dams empty.

A special mention was made of the work of John Moore for collating all the cards on the day.

North East recorded a comfortable win with an aggregate of 914, from GV on 807

and Dalhousie on 715.

Top scorers for NE were Geoff Nicholls and Greg Gourlay, 38pts each; Ron Wilkinson, 36pts, and Greg Birks, 35pts, led GV; and Dalhousie’s best scores came from Jeff Ranger, 37pts, and Gary Bow, 36pts Nearest the pin was con-

A decade-long drought broken GVFL FOOTBALL EUROA SENIORS THE Euroa senior football team has broken a long-running streak of not being able to win against Kyabram at Kyabram with a win on Sunday last weekend, the first in well over a decade at this venue.

Captains Jacob Gleeson and Marcus Varley were brilliant as they led their side with real grit, determination and class throughout the afternoon.

Erish Uthayakumar (4 goals) was certainly giving the Kyabram defenders as real headache.

His work near the goals was giving the side plenty of hope.

Jack McKernan’s tireless running as a lead-up forward was again outstanding as was the damaging left-foot of Jett Trotter.

The match certainly has the hall-marks of a wonderful contest.

Fast ball movement coupled with brutal physicality meant both teams were bound to fight out the game to the final siren.

Harrison Jarvie and Lachie Hill were again underlying to all present what their explosive pace and fierce attack on the ball means to this team.

Jayden Gleeson led his midfield brigade superbly, the chances being created up-forward being plentiful.

Nate Trotter, Dan Garside and Adam Giobbi were again holding up the backline brilliantly, creating plenty of play further up the ground. All in all, the team combined very well and in the summary conversations at the end of a wonderful win the coaching staff, players and supporters could drive home on a Sunday afternoon in full knowledge that this team clicked very well, yet again.

Our players were falling short in winning the ball and stopping the opposition.

As the game continued during the first three quarters the Euroa supporters were thinking that the last quarter could be hard to stop the opposition from increasing their lead and restrict the scoring.

To the credit of the team the last quarter saw our players use the ball best during this period.

Although the Kyabram team were comfortable winners the writer felt that Euroa restricted their scoring thereby reducing the losing mar-gin back under five goals when it looked like being a ten-goal loss.

What also made it more difficult for Euroa was the number of injuries during the game which restricted the team balance and ability to get over the ground.

The team were best served in on-ball roles by Jarmyn Tremellen, Ash Hobbs, Craig Bamford and Zac Gleeson until he received a hard knock from friendly fire which forced him from the ground.

tried hard in the forward line to setup scor-ing opportunities, but the forward line was restricted by supply.

The last quarter was pleasing as the Magpie side stuck together as a group, encouraging their teammates and setting up some good passages of play.

The good thing to come out of game was that the group kept trying hard against the Ky team who always field a strong reserves team and who are always hard to beat at home.

Three of the four match ups were even on rubbers, two of those three were also even on games, going down to points to decide a winner and the close one in section two was only won by the narrow margin of one point.

The results were: Section one: Caslek Computing and Cabling Team defeated Dr Stuart Jones Dentist Team two rubbers each, nine games to eight: Gerard Vitti lost to Stuart Jones 1/3, Chris McNair (fill-in) lost to Daniel Scott (fill-in) 2/3, Tim Leenen defeated Paul O’Brien 3/2 and Josh McNair defeated Liam Thivillier-Lefebvre 3/0.

Barkly Street Vets Team 3 defeated Benalla Bobcat team two rubbers each, seven games each and 99 points to 88: Greg Murphy defeated Wally Pastuszka 3/0, Chris McNair defeated Adam Saddler 3/1, Treena McNair lost to Andrew Ham 1/3 and Bechy Pastuszka lost to Daniel Scott 0/3.

THE Benalla squash juniors once again did themselves proud in the third of the juniors tournaments which was held in Wodonga.

Anakin Pastuszka showed what he’s made of when he was awarded the most improved player of the tournament in the Country Junior Squash tournament in Wodonga on May 15th. Anakin was moved up a grade and proved he was one of the players to watch, continually improving as the year progresses.

So too Addison Pastuszka also showed she was not to be underestimated, Addison also moved into a higher grade, coming runner up in B grade and was recognised with the tournaments female sportsperson award for her attitude on and off court, being a great role model for younger players.

All five Benalla players who attended the Wodonga tournament showed that Benalla has some talented squash players who are thriving on these tournaments, playing different juniors from many locations in Victoria and NSW. Euroa golfers fall short in pennant finals EUROA Golf club had two teams who had won their way through to the 2022 and Pennant finals at the Broadford golf course.

It was the 10th consecutive finals appearance the division one scratch team who came up against Woodend who had beaten Euroa in a close match on their and home course earlier in the season. Euroa were optimistic they could reverse that result in a neutral course.

The match didn’t go Euroa’s way going down 3 1/2 to 1 1/2 p Ed Carracher won his match two up and Glen McMartin finished square.

Matt Mills, Mark Corradin and Josh Bell went down by the narrow margins.

The result left the team disappointed but they are still to be congratulated on another mighty season result.

The division one restricted handicap team came up against a very strong Trenthasm team in their final and went down 5/0.

Most of the matches went deep but treat Trentham which includes five very low handicap players handled the super slick greens the better.

Trentham will be looking to be promoted to division one scratch next year.

The Euroa team of Dale McIntosh, Richard Eddy, Paddy McCarthy, Peter McMahon and Frank O’Connor enjoyed plenty of success throughout the season.

In the Local competitions both the men and women played four ball events for the Wednesday competition.

In the ladies event Sarah Bullen and Robyn Lied paired up for the win on 36 points with Annette Smith and Mary Dewis one shot back and 35.

Other good scores came from the pairing of Michelle Thompson and Levina Redfearn and Deb Cox and Robyn Gilbert.

Annette Smith collected to two drive and pictures and a nearest the pin. In the men’s event Matt Mills and Brendan Redfearn put together an impressive 46 points for a five shot victory over Gary Ritchie and Ross Wishart on 41 and Geoff Vincent and Brian Rosenbrock also scored 41 points. Beautiful autumn weather attracted big fields for the Saturday competition.

43 men completed in a stableford round.

Ash Peddeer took out division one with38 points and Dav Mackrell was best in division two on 35 points.

Lucas Paul and Mark Corradin both had 36 ponts with Steers, Steen and Robinson all on 35.

Good scores in good conditions, the greens are running beautifully and getting quicker.

Paul Robinson’s 35 scored of his plus two handicap was another impressive score.

Paul has had a good run shooting sub-par rounds consistently over the past month.

In the ladies event Mandy Edwards 34 points was the best score of the day and Robyn Lied collected division two as well as two

nearest the pins.

In other events played this week Dale McIntosh had a comfortable win over Mick Keeley in the second round of the Lewis family knockout.

Lucas Paul and Chris Burke got the better of Mark Corradin and Ed Carracher to be one up on the 18th in the second round of the Murphy motors four ball event.

In coming events Dalhousie Vets are at Lancefield on 26 May and GV vets on May 30 at Mooroopna.

Next week Owen Robertson is in office for a Stableford round to kick off the winter cup.

Longwood netballers take double win KDFNL LONGWOOD A GRADE A GRADE battled tirelessly for four quarters this week in what proved to be a nail biting event down to the final siren.

The absence of a key midcourt player this week saw us play our bare seven, without fresh legs cycling through.

Whilst we aimed to make history in obtaining a third win for the season, we will take the drawn result and refocus our energy and effort to secure our history making win, to be realised another day.

A stellar effort for A grade this week against the very competitive adversary Rushworth.

Best on court to the fast footed, quick handed, visionary efforts of Mollie McKeown, playing out of position in GA, and coach’s award to the grit and determination displayed by GK Kristy Bennett, who was able to find another 5 per cent to her already tireless game when under pressure.

B GRADE THIS week B grade took the court with confidence and applied everything they have worked on at training over the last couple of weeks.

We welcomed back two of our key players Meg Ritchie and Nicole Dowell, who we missed last round.

Great movement of the ball throughout midcourt saw our goalers easily receive the ball and put up some brilliant goals.

Our defence worked tirelessly, putting on a heap of pressure on the Rushworth shooters which allowed us to capitalise on their mistakes turning over the ball numerous times.

All gave 100 per cent and kept their heads high allowing us to come away with the first win for the season 49-33.

Coach’s award went to Serena Bleckwehl who applied everything she has been working on at training, allowing her to reap the awards with many intercepts and rebounds.

C GRADE Well, we knew this week was going to be a hard game, with players still out sick with Covid, gave us the bare seven on the court.

Thank you to the two juniors, Bethany and Cassie who helped us out by stepping up.

What an amazing game by all the girls, who all gave 110 per cent and as a result were able to come away with the win 19-14.

Coach’s award went to Lisa Morey for her amazing Intercepts and her positive attitude on the court, best on court went to Michelle Groom, who gets her hand to 90 per cent of the ball, and can be relied on for every rebound.

Also thank you to Emily Jenkinson for sitting on bench for

us as our emergency.

UNDER 17 SHOWING tremendous improvement this season and without a doubt trying to find their groove, the under 17 team have had some very unfortunate injuries resulting in key players out.

The girls continue to fight and work as hard as they can, we still have so much to work on and improve.

This week I gave the privilege of selecting our best on and coaches to a player on the team Kady Francis-Smith who is hopefully back on the court next weekend from an injury.

Her best on court was to Ashlee McWilliam who played in a position that she hasn’t played in all season and she adjusted to the change how a player should and we were so proud of her.

Coach’s award went to Bella Trait who came up from under 15s again to help us out and god were we

proud to have her, beautiful plays in the goal ring.

I think as a coach it’s not just myself coaching and I tell the girls all the time to tell me what they want from me and to tell me what they notice they need to work on, and having one on the side line and helping me coach on the weekend gave them the chance to have their say and encourage their team in a way I may not be able to do.

UNDER 15 THE girls again went out in a hard battle but continued to give 100% and left it all out on the court.

They continue to grow each week and are taking on board the drills we run at training into their game play.

Coach’s award went to Simone O’Connor who in her first ever season playing netball, continues to grow and is finding her feet beautifully in the ring well supported by her team mates.

Best on court went to our captain Beth Pellegrino who just continues to give it her all week in and week out.

UNDER 13 This week going into the game with a couple of girls out, we knew it would be a tough game.

We had some great intercepts with everyone getting their hands to ball a few times, we had everyone on court pushing themselves all game.

With many awards donated this week everyone received an award, but this week our best on went to Allira Cummins, who pushed herself to get her hands to many intercepts and multiple deflections, she worked so hard to bring it down court for the girls and had a great voice encouraging the girls.

Our coach’s award went to Maylee Webber who was running her heart out to get the passes and bring the ball down court to the girls and had played the best game we had seen her play yet.

Jess and I are so proud of these girls for having a crack even when down a few players.
