Iconic landmark finalist Southern Aurora mural named as finalist in Australian Street Art Award THE Southern Aurora Memorial in Violet Town has been chosen as a finalist for the Australian Street Art Awards, an exciting achievement for the entire community.

The award recognises the spectacular art work surrounding the memorial garden, with the mural being added in 2022 by Tim Bowtell alongside further contributions from Lach Cumming and Chris Mann.

Bruce Cumming of the Southern Aurora Memorial committee was thrilled with the news and that it was the collective work of several individuals and groups that helped earn the recognition.

“It is pretty exciting for a tiny town with a big national story to tell,” he said.

“There has been a lot of input from many creatives since 2018.

“Without the range of creative people with ideas and actions we would not have this evolving garden space being a finalist in a national street art awards.”

Mr Cumming spoke about the art within the garden and how it truly conveyed the stories about the Southern Aurora tragedy, a railway accident in Violet

Town that claimed the lives of nine people in 1969.

“The artworks created for the Southern Aurora Memorial Garden are fundamental to telling the true stories of a significant national event in Australian history,” he said.

“There is no event of national importance similar to this when a regional community rallied to respond quickly and effectively to save and

protect lives and support people in so many ways.

“Nor is there a memorial where local community and external stakeholders especially railway fraternity decided that the kindness of strangers be well remembered using unique ways, particularly art and design, and ones which help bring healing and celebration of positive human attributes.

Waters stocked Arboretum and Seven Creeks filled with 10,000 perch , ggolden p

By GUS RIDDER B TEN thousand fish have found a new home in Euroa after the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) stocked local waters with buckets full of golden perch, much to the delight of locals who showed up to watch it all happen.

The golden perch are only babies and just a few centimetres long, with the expectation that they will be ‘pan-size’ in a couple of years.

Unfortunately, many of the fish will not make it to that size with just 10-15 per cent expected to survive and reach maturity.

The fish stocking was arranged by the Strathbogie-Euroa Angling Club, who turned up in force to the Euroa Caravan Park to watch 8000 of the golden perch be placed into creek before heading to the Euroa Arboretum for the remaining 2000.

Henry Hoornweg from the angling club was thrilled with the amount of fish that Euroa received.

“We were only expecting 6000 fish at first,” he said.

“Then it became 8000 and before you know it we were getting 10,000.

“While they won’t all make it, it’s good to get as many as

possible the waters.” ibl iin th t ” Several members brought their children to participate in the stocking with many more curious onlookers getting involved throughout the morning last Wednesday.

After travelling from Corowa, the drivers from the VFA were happy to take a backwards step and let the kids put the fish in the water and have some fun.

“It’s been a great turnout,” Mr Hoornweg said.

“We put the call out to our members and many of them brought their kids out for the day.

“It’s a bit of fun and a nice way to get them involved in fishing and the club.”

The VFA website explained the stocking process and why golden perch were the preferred option.

“Golden perch is a significant component of the department’s native fish stocking program, with considerable numbers being purchased each year from commercial fish farms to stock rivers and lakes to restore existing populations or establish new recreational fishing populations in suitable waters.”

Nagambie is also set to receive a large delivery of fish, with 50,000 reportedly on the way to their water.

GREAT TURNOUT: The Strathbogie-Euroa Angling Club was well-represented, with several members bringing the kids out to participate.

GOOD LUCK: The Victorian Fisheries Authority was happy to let the kids do the work, much to their delight as they released the fish into the creek.

GOLDEN PERCH: 10,000 fish were released into Euroa waters, restoring existing golden perch populations.

Mary Manning, a local businesswoman, spoke about her feelings about the picnic and the Voice.

“It is a great idea to have the picnic and hear the real story,” she said.

“The Referendum isn’t about what the Voice might look like; it is about an in-principle decision to support our First Nation people.”

Pip Carew from Ruffy also expressed her interest in the picnic.

“I am going to come to the picnic because I am passionate about Aboriginal people having a Voice in parliament and I want to hear from Aunty Jill Gallagher,” she said.

Other comments heard on the day included - “we have so much to learn about our history and

the oldest living culture” and “the referendum is not something to fearful about.”

The Euroa YES picnic is attracting interest from other towns across the shire and around the region.

“The Voice would offer an opportunity for Indigenous Australians to determine their way forward,” one community member from Avenel said to the organisers.

“Enshrining ‘The Voice’ in our constitution would tell the world we are a nation of compassion and respect.”

The picnic will be held on February 4 from 12.30-2pm at the Sevens Creek Park.

It is being run by volunteers and is BYO water and sandwiches.

SOME 34 PROJECTS across remote, rural and regional Australia will share in over $288,000 in federal funding, including a project in Euroa.

Community Learning Euroa (CLE), a local centre which offers programs and advice for those seeking support with upskilling, has received $8000 for their project.

The project is set to provide IT learning opportunities for adults and boost confidence and skills to enhance the process of recovery of the Euroa community from COVID-19.

CLE was also supported through the recent Strathbogie Shire Council Community Grants, receiving a grant of $3953.

“These sorts of initiatives deliver remarkable outcomes for their communities while boosting local morale, making for an even bigger impact in the region,” Minister for Federal Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said.

The funding has been allocated through the second round of the Strengthening Rural Communities - Rebuilding Regional Communities (RRC) program.

The Australian Government has partnered with Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) to deliver the program, recognising the continuing impacts of COVID-19 on remote,

LAST weekend an informal community group talked to people in the Sevens Creek Park about a forthcoming community picnic relating to the 2023 Referendum on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

On February 4 at 12.30pm, community members can attend and hear from Aboriginal elder Aunty Jill Gallagher.

It seems that mums, dads, grandparents, and other residents are pretty interested in hearing about the Referendum and the Voice to the federal parliament.

Under the program, community groups and not-for-profit organisations receive microgrants of up to $10,000, or larger grants of up to $50,000, to deliver initiatives that benefit regional, rural and remote areas recovering from the impacts of COVID-19.

The government has committed $5 million from 2022 to 2024 to the RRC stream.

Minister for Infrastructure,

Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said the program was integral to ensuring regional communities bounced back from the pandemic.

“Our government is committed to backing regional, rural and remote communities, which continue to face challenges from the pandemic.

“That’s why we’ve invested $5 million towards this vital program, which is already

supporting some incredible community-led initiatives that are making a real difference in their regions.

“I look forward to seeing the benefits flow from this next round of projects.”

PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT: Registrations are now open for Clean Up Australia Day, an event that focusses on practical action to protecting the environment.

Clean up Australia AS the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, Australians are being encouraged to join together to take positive action.

As such, registrations are officially open for Clean Up Australia Day 2023.

Pip Kiernan, chair of Clean Up Australia spoke about the opportunity that the day provides, and why it is so important.

“Our environment is facing pressure unlike ever before,” she said.

“As all Australians know, over the past two years, we’ve seen severe bushfires, cyclones and floods, and increased pressures on our biodiversity and an ever-growing volume of waste which leaks into our natural and marine environment.

“Australians tell us every day that they are concerned about the world we live in but often feel frustrated and unsure how to make a positive impact.

“Clean Up Australia Day is a great opportunity to work together and take practical action.

“We seek the support of all Australians.

“Together we can all make a real difference.”

Registration is free, and participants receive a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves and bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families and community groups available (businesses are asked to pay a small fee to cover costs).

Strathbogie Shire Council are assisting community groups and schools who have registered events by:  offering free tipping or disposal of litter collected at a clean-up;  providing extra Clean Up Australia Day gloves, hivis vests, signage and bags for event organisers if required; and  litter audit support: a limited number of school and community events, who wish to audit the collected litter can request help in litter auditing.

One of council’s waste education officers will attend the end of the event and provide assistance to complete a litter audit, also teaching students as they go

what a litter audit is and how to avoid this type of waste in the future.

“Signing up now means you’re making a pledge to improve and protect Australia’s environment,” Ms Kiernan said.

“Whether you are nine or ninety, participating in a Clean Up Australia event changes the way you think about your everyday habits and the practical changes each of us can make.

“Everyone who gets involved tells us how rewarding the day is and how it has made a lasting positive impact.”

Shire’s electoral shape under review THROUGHOUT 2023-24, 39 Victorian local councils will undergo electoral structure reviews, with round one reviews for 12 rural shire councils, including Strathbogie Shire, kicking off this week.

The Local Government Act 2020 (the Act) introduced several changes, including that all small and large rural shire councils must now have electoral structures that are either unsubdivided, subdivided with singlecouncillor wards, or multicouncillor wards with an equal number of councillors per ward.

The reviews will be conducted by independent electoral representation

advisory panels.

Under the Act, the electoral commissioner (or delegate) must be a member of a panel.

“The panels will consider if councils have an appropriate number of councillors and whether they should be one large unsubdivided area or subdivided into wards,” electoral commissioner Warwick Gately said.

“If the council will be subdivided, the panel will look at how many wards the council should have, the number of councillors in each ward, ward boundaries and ward names.”

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) will provide technical and administrative support to the panels.

There will be two public information sessions to announce the start of the reviews, explain the processes, and open the submissions period.

The VEC encourages all Victorians, particularly those in the local council areas under review, to contribute to the review process and have their say.

Strathbogie stands out from above Australia’s oldest aviation navigational g aid restored and repainted p to p perpetuate p historyy

By GUS RIDDER ALMOST 30 years since the Strathbogie Aerial Navaid was first featured in The Euroa Gazette, the navigational aid sign has been restored and repainted.

Visual aids were an important part of early aviation history, with most airplanes not being equipped with radios and navigational equipment.

The sign, listed on Victoria’s Heritage Register, featured in a January 26, 1993 story about it being rediscovered after decades of anonymity being hidden on Polly McQuinns road.

“In 1936 the air safety committee of the National Safety Council approached school committees in some country areas with the suggestion that they co-operate in marking out - in huge letters - the name of their respective towns,” the story begun.

“These were in effect a precursor to the roof-top names in which proliferated in the pre-electronic era, and which are still very much in evidence today.

“Strathbogie was selected to be included in the network because of the distance from the main Melbourne-Sydney air route, and also because of its mountainous location.

“Students were employed under the guidance of the

local schoolmaster Mr A.B Crosbie to mark out the name STRATHBOGIE in giant 9’ by 4½’ letters.

“Each letter was marked out with square shaped stones embedded in the ground- all joints being set in concrete.

“The site chosen for the name was first ploughed and the top soil scooped off to a depth of six inches, leaving a red clay surface.

“The lettering was then painted pure white to enhance its contrast.

“The site selected for this primitive navaid was a rising knoll about half a mile due south of the township.

“The only directional wireless aids in Australia at that time were installed on the Tasman Sea and Bass Strait routes.

“Ironically, it is the town’s relative isolation which has also assisted the survival of this unique relic of Australian aviation.

“A council road has begun to encroach on the marker, and the school which built it has long since disappeared.

“Incredibly though, the ground marker has survived for 56 years, complete in every detail.”

In its current form, the navaid is still clearly visible and a notable feature of the Strathbogie region, 87 years since its creation.

AVIATION HISTORY: The Strathbogie Aerial Navaid, an important part of Australian aviation history that featured in the Gazette 30 years ago, has been restored.

The Voice will not be a third arm I WAS disappointed to read the letter in the Gazette of January 11.

It shows either wilful ignorance or mischief making.

The writer claims that the establishment of a Voice to Parliament will be a third arm of government.

The Voice will only exist as an advisory body to the government on policies that are likely to have an impact on Indigenous issues.

It will have no role in framing or presenting legislation, but will provide advice on proposed legislation, which the government is under no obligation to accept.

This role can hardly be construed as a third arm of government, no more than any other body which advises the government.

It is important to note that Barnaby Joyce has admitted that he was wrong to characterise the Voice concept as a third arm of government.

The proposal to enshrine the consultative process in the Constitution is a separate issue

but is designed to ensure that future governments of whatever persuasion will be obliged to seek advice from our Indigenous Australians on matters which affect them.

The current policy decision making processes has not closed the enormous gap that exists between mainstream Australia and our Indigenous Australians in health, education, employment, etc.

The establishment of a Voice to Parliament has to be a better process than that which currently occurs, where policies are developed from the top down and implemented with minimal input from the people who will be affected by those decisions.

The Voice to Parliament is not a threat to our way of government, but is a means of enhancing and delivering more equitable outcomes for our First Nation citizens and should be welcomed and supported.

Clarifying my previous letter I WAS in error on Indigenous

migration, what I was clumsily trying to say and didn’t was that whether you were born here or migrated here we all love this wide brown land of ours.

But I also wish to correct the assumption that all Indigenous people are asking us to vote yes to the Voice.

Proud of my new home AS a new resident to this beautiful region I am delighted to discover that there is a picnic on February 4 to support the yes campaign in the forthcoming Indigenous Voice to Parliament Constitutional referendum.

Our Constitution is our governing handbook.

It sets out the principles upon which we agree to be governed.

This means changing the Constitution involves three things.

First, any change is made by we, the people, by referendum not by the politicians.

Secondly, if we do vote to give an Indigenous Voice to Parliament it will be for the parliament to pass legislation enabling the Constitutional change.

This is ever the case when the Commonwealth is given power to act.

The referendum is not the time for details.

Since Constitutional change is permanent, the details to enable the Voice are better left to future governments to deal with circumstances as they arise in the future by empowered legislation.

Thirdly, the change must improve the way we are governed.

Since the Voice gives no right to introduce, amend or veto any legislation it is a very minimal alteration.

The proposed referendum does no more than recognise indigenous people by giving them a formal opportunity to be heard when laws affecting them are proposed.

Victorian Nationals team prepare for year ahead MEMBERS of the Victorian Nationals gathered in Mildura last week to prepare for a year of community advocacy off the back of a successful Victorian election.

Newly elected Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said there were many local issues which do not stop at electorate boundaries.

“How to effectively advocate for better investment in regional roads, addressing regional health challenges and reducing cost of living pressures were some of the many issues we discussed as a team,” Ms Cleeland said.

“There is no time to waste with investment in regional infrastructure crucial for the liveability of country Victoria.”

With five new members added to the Nationals’ party room, the gathering aimed to arm new members with an advocacy strategy that would be effective across the state.

“Regional Victorians are frustrated by the lack of investment received under the current government,” she said.

“Our priorities remain clear.

“Our regions need increased health access to local services, road investment and support dealing with the

increased cost of living.

“Right across our region, like several areas in country Victoria, we are still dealing with the aftermath of floods and the recovery is ongoing.

“This will continue to be a focus, ensuring our beautiful country towns can get back on their feet and look to the future with optimism.”

Ms Cleeland outlined several crucial local projects and the benefits of working within a strong Nationals team.

“My focus will be on pressuring the government to invest in crucial local infrastructure like the Kilmore Bypass and support-

ing school upgrades in Seymour and Broadford,” Ms Cleeland said.

“We also need to support local services by securing the future of Euroa Health, providing more local childcare and backing great local organisations like Tomorrow Today.

“The Nationals party room has the state’s most fierce regional advocates, and I can’t wait to work and learn alongside them for the next four years.

“Our team has an incredible range of life and political experience and will be a formidable team, fighting for regional Victoria’s fair share of funding.”

Euroa gym to host 1000km charity rowing challenge EUROA locals will come together next month to raise much needed funds and awareness for children with brain cancer.

The Euroa Gym (TEG) team will take part in the Connor’s Erg Challenge, hosted by the Robert Connor Dawes (RCD) Foundation.

The rowing challenge and foundation are champions for battling paediatric brain cancer which kills more children than any other disease by funding research, care and development projects, backing the science to end paediatric brain cancer and supporting patients in the meantime TEG owner Daniel Godsmark said they entered a team for the first time in February last year, after the event had typically been based in the United States.

“The team set a new fundraising world record for Connor’s Erg, raising $45,531, while rowing 300km in a single day across three rowing machines,” he said.

“On February 18, TEG will be celebrating its first birthday with a huge party - Connor’s Erg 2023!

Brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease, which many local Euroa residents are aware of, and have seen the tragedy of personally.

Event organisers Dustin and Shannon Perry lost their daughter Chloe to brain cancer in 2017, and many locals will also know another little Euroa girl Chelsea who is currently being treated.

It’s an issue many Euroa residents care deeply about.

Chelsea’s mother Tracey Johnson said they were incredibly lucky as Chelsea was in remission after being diagnosed with malignant brain cancer in January, 2022.

Although it had not been long between Chelsea’s diagnosis and the event last year, Tracey said they were more than happy to support the event.

“We had a very successful row last year and we’re

Tracey explained just how important the RCD Foundation was for their family.

“The foundation has been imperative to my daughter’s treatment - if it wasn’t for the foundation her treatment would have been far

more invasive,” she said.

Tracey said the foundation had enabled more specified treatments for particular brain cancers and also noted the incredible work Dustin had completed in attracting more Australian government funding for brain cancer research.

She said it was incredibly important to also continue to work on methods of early detection as Chelsea had been a healthy six-year-old before being diagnosed.

“We need to continue to support and hopefully with more research we can try and find earlier markers of

brain cancers and hopefully get to a point one day when treatment is even less invasive,” Tracey said.

The Connor’s Erg Challenge at The Euroa Gym will be held on February 18.

There will be a selection of live music, DJs, activities and a food and coffee van on site.

Hospitals get funding, Euroa still waiting

By GUS RIDDER THE Andrews Labor Government is giving Victorian hospitals more of the latest medical equipment and essential infrastructure they need, however the Euroa Hospital remains on the outer as it still continues its efforts for further funding.

Acting Premier Jacinta Allan and acting Minister for Health Lizzie Blandthorn announced 23 health services across Victoria will share in $55 million for new equipment and upgrades.

“We’re giving our hardworking doctors and nurses the equipment they need, so they can continue doing what they do best - saving lives,” Ms Allan said.

“While there is always work that needs to be done to improve our health system, fixing primary care must be the Commonwealth’s top priority - so every Australian can get the affordable healthcare they deserve.”

As part of the latest round of the Labor Government’s Medical

HOSPITAL BOOST: Hospitals across Victoria are receiving funding through a new round of State Government programs, including GV Health in Shepparton and Northeast Health in Wangaratta.

Equipment Replacement Program (MERT), hospitals will receive new equipment for a range of services - diagnostic tools like MRI machines, microscopes, digital XRay units and CT scanners as well as heart imaging equipment such as fluoroscopy units and SPECT-CT gamma cameras.

In addition, as part of the latest round of the Engineering Infrastructure Replacement Program, 18 health services across Victoria will share in more than $20 million to upgrade important in-

frastructure such as generators, chillers, emergency lighting, nurse call systems, air conditioning systems, patient lifts and alarm systems.

Goulburn Valley Health and Northeast Health are some of the facilities to receive funding through these programs both this year and previously, with a new MRI machine set for Wangaratta.

“By investing in new equipment and infrastructure upgrades across Melbourne and regional Victoria we’re ensuring that all Victo-

rians can access worldclass health services, no matter where they live,” Ms Blandthorn said.

“We’ll also invest more than $20 million to deliver upgrades at hospitals across Victoria - ensuring our doctors and nurses are caring for Victorians in modern and safe facilities.”

Since 2015, the Labor Government has invested more than $15 billion to build, upgrade and modernise hospitals across the state- with new equipment, new facilities, and entirely new hospitals.

Fatal crash near Longwood EMERGENCY services responded to a single vehicle crash on Friday afternoon that resulted in the death of the vehicle’s passenger.

It’s believed a vehicle travelling along the Hume Freeway near Avenel-Longwood Road crashed into a tree just

after 3pm.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital in a serious condition, while the passenger died at the scene.

Both are yet to be formally identified.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined

at this stage.

Workforce participation dropping across Victoria NEW figures released this week confirm that the number of employed Victorians has fallen by 13,190 people in December 2022.

Despite the release of ABS Labour Force data showing a slight fall in Victoria’s unemployment rate to 3.5 per cent in December, it is underpinned by a significant 0.5 per cent drop in Victoria’s participation rate to 66.6 per cent, revealing Victorians are dropping out of the jobs market.

Overall, there were 20,603 less Victorians in the labour force than in November.

The Nationals member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland said businesses across the region were struggling to fill vacancies.

“Right across the region we have businesses whose growth is being hampered due to a lack of available staff,” Ms Cleeland said.

“It’s been an incredibly tough couple of years, with COVID and floods.

“Our communities have felt the full force of these events.

“It’s important we attract more workers to regional Victoria to staff local businesses and support local economies.”

Without investment in regional services and infrastructure, Ms Cleeland expressed concern migration to regional areas will be

“We all want our region to be

“This is only possible if government investment is boosted, and we see a sustained commitment to regional infrastructure.”

Sunday, January 22 saw a ‘come and try day’ at the new onwater fun park.

There was a steady flow of all ages coming through the gates.

Some had found the shade and sat under a tree, watching the grandkids exhaust themselves, but most were out there on the equipment, having what appeared to be a great time.

The weather Gods were smiling as it was a perfect day.

26 degrees, light breeze offshore and the water temperature was just right.

As you move around the floating platforms and through the various obstacles, the first thing you notice is it is quite challenging mentally and physically.

Keeping your balance, working your way through and over and across, takes a bit of energy.

It reminds me of Ninja Warrior, on water.

Park manager Sinead Hughes was on-hand to ensure it was a smooth opening, as was Paul Cox, the site manager.

Paul and his crew have done extraordinary work to get the park to where it is today, having had a few obstacles to contend with themselves.

Nothing worthwhile comes easy.

The Park will be open seven days a week from 10am until 7pm.

A couple of budding ninja warriors I spoke to, highly recommended them for balance and grip. $25 gets you a fifty minute workout and you can go around again, in a double session, for $40.

Discounted family, all day and annual passes are also on offer.

An advanced electronic locker system is also on-site to store your valuables and you can top up your phone in the ones with a USB point.

The attractions are catering for people five years and older for the on-water fun, however

there is a pretty ‘cool’ kiddies park within the park.

Like a jumping castle, but with plenty of safe activities inside.

Watching the participants, I reckon they got more than their money’s worth.

The park will be kept afloat and active until April and close until the September holidays, where it will spring to life again and remain open through Melbourne Cup weekend, Christmas, January holidays and so forth.

When asked about park security, Sinead said a strategically placed and monitored (24/7) CCTV system, will cover all aspects of the Park, when not operating.

Roving security patrols will drop in randomly out of operating hours and the local police will visit during their patrols.

Will Yeap is one of the Wacky Water Play Nagambie directors who I spoke to.

I was curious about the less than ideal start they had had to

the season, with COVID, floods, rain and more.

Will was upbeat, saying this was a long term business, 15 to 20 years and beyond, so they are not too worried about early minor setbacks.

Nagambie’s park is bigger than their Lakes Entrance park with more on-water activities and challenges.

He also said that the parks were quite “green”, with no fossil fuel based motors required.

Recycled materials have been used where possible.

The materials used are durable and will take plenty of heavy work, over many years much like ‘zodiac’ dinghy material.

Resident Blake Campbell had brought down his kids Bobby (5) and Billy (7) for the Park try out.

Blake had barely fastened their life jackets and they were off.

Bobby reckoned it was “really fun and cool.”

I couldn’t catch up with Billy for a comment, as he was up and down the 8.7 metre slide, which is the central attraction.

I mistakenly thought the Park was for the younger cohort, but there were quite a few ‘mature’ funsters who showed you only need to be young at heart to keep having a good time.

I will be the first to say the jury was out for me about how viable and popular the park would be.

I am pleased to say it appears I was well off the mark, and if today was any sign of things to come, then it will be a very successful and pleasant addition to Nagambie.

Rutherglen Rowing Regatta revived after 2022 floods

By DIANE GRANT LIKE many other country towns in Victoria, New South Wales and now Western Australia, flood waters have devastated plans for many sporting events over the last few months.

Thankfully, these events are returning to the region.

Three schools have made their way to Nagambie for their annual rowing camps; Damascus Ballarat, Geelong Grammar and Carey Baptist College.

Over 120 rowers, from years 10 and older, plus coaches and supervisors are preparing for a two-day regatta that will hopefully be held on February 18 and 19 on Lake Nagambie.

Members of the Nagambie Rowing Club attended the Rutherglen Regatta recently, with the club’s David Andrews discussing the work being done to ensure the rowing goes ahead in 2023.

“Well, after just getting through the worst of COVID (fingers and toes crossed), we endured, what they are calling a “Weather Event”, with massive flooding,” he said.

“I’m sure you’ll agree that all our lives and activities have been on-hold or severely curtailed for some time.

“Sport was just one of the many areas challenged during this time and it does form a very important part of the community fabric.

“It is an outlet, a reason to keep fit, meeting and enjoying the company of friends.

“My sport of choice is rowing, which is not for everyone but like any team based sport, it provides life-balance, challenges and a welcome distraction to all the other ‘goings on’ about the place.

“Regional sporting clubs, be they rowing, football, netball or darts, rely on events to keep them afloat financially and buy new equipment, maintain facilities and such.

ROWING RETURNS: Nagambie Men’s ‘G’ quadruple scull team were among the winners at Rutherglen, with team members Leigh McIntyre, Rick Woodard, Andy Horsburgh and John Strapps enjoying their prize.

“The first rowing regatta of the year is usually at Rutherglen, in northern Victoria.

“This is held over two days on Lake Moodimere, which is about seven kilometres out of town.

“Not only do the clubs benefit, but local businesses do a roaring trade.

“The Murray Rowing Association hosts the regatta, and three clubs combine and work together, to ensure its success - Wahgunyah, Corowa and Rutherglen Rowing Clubs.

“Now, up until two weeks ago, the regatta infrastructure was underwater.

“Access to the lake was all but non-existent and the future of

the 2023 regatta was in jeopardy.

“A cancellation would have been a significant ‘blow’ to the clubs and area in general.

“As the water receded, the clubs and community got to work and through sheer determination and hard work, got the course and facilities up to scratch.

“It was no mean feat.

“Sunscreen and shade were the rowers and spectators friends over the two days, as temperatures teased at 40 degrees.

“The breeze was the saviour and gave welcome relief.

“800 metres is raced on the Saturday, with a 500 metre course setup for Sunday.

“There were 134 races conducted over the two days, with 26 clubs from Victoria and interstate representing.

“416 athletes participated in events, with 2,107 seats filled.”

Well done to the Wahgunyah, Corowa and Rutherglen Rowing Clubs for getting the regatta up and going, a great achievement in the circumstances.

Thanks to Parks Victoria too, for rebuilding the roads and infrastructure.

Good luck to the Nagambie Rowing Club on their upcoming regatta in February.

Let’s hope that Lake Nagambie becomes debris free for this annual event for our club.

Mechanics Institute building turns 150

By DIANE GRANT LET’S celebrate a momentous time for the Nagambie Mechanics Institute (NMI) building on High Street which is turning 150 years old this year.

The Institute was established in 1865 before the first hall was built in 1873.

The library then operated from 1874 for quite a while.

The Institute has been a centre for a wide range of activities for the community.

It has hosted movies, weddings, concerts, model car shows, quilt fairs, soirees, dances, balls, table tennis nights, high teas, fashion parades, school events, Anzac Day and remembrance services, funerals, memorials and birthday parties to name just a few.

It has been Nagambie’s community hall for decades.

Over the years, major renovation works have been done to maintain both the inside and outside of the building, allow-

Some more major renovations do need to be implemented such as changing the windows and upgrading the kitchen so that more community events can be held.

The current volunteer Institute committee are excited about the prospect of celebrating this milestone with a series

of events and some necessary fundraisers.

Cathy Lawrence of the Institute’s trivia night committee spoke about what the priorities were for upgrades.

“The wish list, apart from renovating/upgrading the kitchen and changing the front windows, would be a digital grand piano for future concerts that would be fantastic for the NMI and for the community,” Ms Lawrence said.

Events are already planned for the new year, with Ms Lawrence discussing what’s on the calendar for 2023.

“Celebrating 150 years is an opportunity to organise fund raising events and to share the history of the NMI, and its impact in the Nagambie community over the years,” she said.

“The key starting event for 2023 will be a trivia night which will be held on February 4, in the stunning hall of the NMI. “Thanks to the generous contributions of sponsors and partners there will be a silent auction, auctions, raffles, games and of course the trivia.

“Debbie Ringin, Bernie and Jeff Boardle, Sissy Hoskin and myself are the organising committee for the trivia night.”

MEMORIES OF AVENEL: I moved to Avenel in May 1982.

From early 1984 I took over the writing of the Activities in Avenel column as Di Laverie for the local paper from Olga Harrison when she got sick and passed away.

I started capturing many Avenel activities with my small Polaroid and Canon cameras.

I placed many of them in small albums, especially the Avenel Youth Group ones as I ran the group with local support from parents and the young people’s committee.

I am handing over those albums and some memorabilia to Sissy Hoskin, who was raised in Avenel.

Sissy is the EO of GoNagambie.

She has willingly accepted to store them for me as Avenel does not have a Historical society.

Childcare deserts plague the region THE Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has highlighted the need for more accessible childcare across the region with young families in competition for a limited number of spaces.

The strong sentiment that childcare is becoming increasingly unobtainable has been backed by the Mitchell Institute’s 2022 report into ‘Childcare deserts and oases’.

The report categorises deserts as regions where there are less than 0.333 childcare places per child aged four and under.

Ms Cleeland said the report showed several deserts across the electorate of Euroa.

“Kilmore-Broadford, Benalla Region and the Seymour Region are all classified as childcare deserts by the Mitchell Institute with a dearth of available places,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Our major towns aren’t inaccessible backwaters, but they are placed at a disadvantage when childcare is so rare.

“I’ve spoken to so many parents who are wanting to get back into the workforce but can’t because they are unable to get their kids into childcare.

“This is a real handbrake for us and places a hurdle in front of young people who want to raise their family in the country.

“We’ve got incredible local childcare providers but in some places there’s up to six kids competing for each place.

“It’s simply not sustainable.”

Ms Cleeland welcomed the news that Seymour would be receiving a new childcare centre to alleviate some of the strain on the system locally.

“The government’s commitment to a new centre in Seymour is very welcome and I’ll be seeking some information around the timeline of its delivery,” Ms Cleeland said.

“There’s still plenty of work to be done when smaller communities like Murchison, Rushworth, Tooborac and Redesdale have no childcare at all.

“There are intense cost of living pressures on households now and nearly every family with young children is dependent on two incomes to financially survive.

“A simple solution is to enable both parents to work by having accessible childcare.

“As a mother of two young kids I have experienced firsthand the challenges of accessing childcare and how difficult life can be without that security.

“I’m determined to work with our communities and families to improve local access to childcare.”

Murray Valley encephalitis detected in Indigo Shire Health department p warns against g mosquito q exposure p this summerr

By RYAN MALCOLM HEALTH authorities have urged North East residents to remain vigilant in limiting their exposure to mosquitoes this summer, following a detection of the Murray Valley encephalitis virus in an Indigo Shire mosquito last week.

First trapped on January 10, testing of the mosquito later identified the virus, following a number of other detections throughout northern Victoria earlier this month, particularly in Loddon and Mildura shires.

The detection follows a number of Barmah Forest Virus and Ross River Virus detections in mosquitoes across northern Victoria earlier this month, as well as the state’s first detection of the rare Japanese en-

cephalitis virus in Campaspe Shire in late December.

A Department of Health warning issued by deputy chief health officer Deborah Friedman indicated concern around the rise of Murray Valley encephalitis within the mosquito population, and said increased detections posed a “current and active” risk to people in northern Victoria.

The state’s first detection of the virus in mosquitoes more than a decade occurred in Mildura on January 4, while a human has not reported being infected by the disease in Victoria since 1974.

Murray Valley encephalitis can cause a rare but potentially serious infection of the central nervous system, with symptoms characterised by fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle aches.

In most cases, infected people do not exhibit symptoms.

The alert issued by Ms Friedman urged anyone exhibiting symptoms to seek urgent medical care, while also calling on clinicians to test for mosquito-borne disease in patients with a compatible illness.

The virus is untreatable, with health officials urging local residents to limit their exposure to mosquitoes in the first instance, by wearing long, loose-fitting clothes and using mosquito repellents if outside during periods with large numbers of mosquitoes.

It’s part of a global initiative that helps you investigate soil health and potential contaminants in your garden so you can work out the best use for your patch of paradise.

EPA’s chief environmental scientist, Professor Mark Patrick Taylor, said GardenSafe was a great way to dig a little deeper into your soil.

“If you are growing fruit and vegetables at home, you should use GardenSafe to check what is under the surface of your seedlings...the only cost to you is the postage,” he said.

“Our scientists assess each sample they get for trace elements and general soil quality indicators, including soil texture, composition, nutrients and organic carbon,” he said.

“As a science-based regulator we need this data.

“The findings from GardenSafe help us to build an understanding of potential contamination levels in residential gardens across Victoria.”

WATER SHARE SALES: Goulburn-Murray Water’s connections project is allowing for irrigators to share in more benefits from water share sales.

Irrigators to benefit from water share sales IRRIGATORS in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District (GMID) will share in further benefits from the sale of water shares thanks to the savings created through the Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Connections Project.

The Connections Project was Australia’s largest water savings project, creating 433GL in annual water savings.

In 2022, these savings were passed on to irrigators in the GMID in the form of either water shares or a credit on their fixed charge accounts.

In February 2022, the Minister for Water announced an additional 2GL of water had been recovered through the Connections Project.

A third of the additional 2GL savings will now be passed on to irrigators in the GMID through credits on their accounts following the sale of water shares.

The remaining two-thirds, nominally shared between the other original partners in the project - the environment (represented by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder) and Melbourne retail water corporations - has been set aside for Traditional Owners in northern Victoria.

The water shares will be listed for sale this month, via a public online auction through RuralCo Water.

GMW managing director Charmaine Quick said the sales had been timed to provide a positive outcome for all.

“The sale of the shares will be conducted in line with an independently developed trading strategy,” she said.

“The strategy has been designed to maximise returns for beneficiaries while minimising market disruption and ensuring open accessibility to the trade opportunity for all interested parties.”

The water share parcels range in size from 1.4ML to 190.8ML and are available across Goulburn, Murray, Campaspe and Loddon trading zones.

Each auction will be open until February 1, 2023.

Financial benefits arising from the water share sale will be distributed as a GMW account credit for all eligible recipients of the irrigators’ share, proportionate to holdings of delivery share on census date (October 1, 2021).

SPORT - SCOREBOARD GOLF

EUROA GOLF CLUB THE third and deciding rounds of the Captain’s Trophies were played on Saturday.

In the ladies event Michelle Thomson and Jenny Thomson began tied for the lead and after the final Jenny Thomson had taken the event by the narrowest one shot margin.

In the men’s event Laurie McMartin and Paul Robinson were at the top of the leaderboard.

Paul Robinson shot one under 71, but Laurie McMartin parred the course and from his handicap of five finished Net 67 to take out the Captain’s Trophy by six shots.

The ladies Saturday event had 22 players and saw Justine Collins continue her sizzling form to take out division one with Net 71 while Ros Doxey had Net 68 to win division two.

Balls down the line went to Dee McMartin 69, Marion McMartin 70, Robin Lied 71 and Lorraine Ellis 72.

Ros Doxey, Jenny Thomson and Maudie Ingram took out the nearest the pins, while Dee McMartin’s birdie on five won the drive and pitch and Melissa Eddy won the 15th.

A big field of 40 men saw Laurie McMartin Net 67 win division one and Mick Anderson Net 70 won division two.

Some excellent scores off the stick were carded and balls down the line went to Cam Roper, Neal Healey, Paul Robinson and Paul Jones all on Net 71 while Ross Wishart, Dick Farmer

and Graeme Carnegie were next Net 72.

Nearest the pins were Neal Healey on five and 12, John Gilbert on five, Matt Mills was the closest on 15 + 18.

Drive and pitch was P Robinson on four +16 and Rhys Andrews on 11.

The men’s drive and pitch and nearest the pins on the front nine are now only open to division two players, while the whole field can compete for the back nine.

This is a new initiative by the Match Committee and gives the division two players, of which there were 24 on Saturday an increased chance to be in the winners.

Saturday was also the third round of the Captain’s Trophy and the top ten was Laurie McMartin 207, Paul Robinson 213, Cam Roper 216, Ross Wishart 217, Dick Farmer 219, David Balner 220, Bill Wright 226, Dale McIntosh 227, Mick Koeley 230 and Don Bubeck 231.

The Friday Twilight competition continues to grow, this week 35 players enjoyed the nine hole Stableford Round from 4pm which was won by Laurie McMartin on 21, Justine Collins, Brendan Redfern and Gaz all had 20 while Dick Farmer, Mary Steen and Charlie Walker also collected a ball on 19 points.

Thursday, January 26 sees the Australia Day three person Ambrose event tee off early or at 12pm after bbq lunch.

NAGAMBIE GOLF CLUB A GREAT turn out of 29 keen golfers contested the much sought after Waterboy Cup were greeted with perfect conditions for scoring.

With the run back in the course, handicapped golfers have plenty of opportunities as shown in this weeks results.

David Fullager managed to survive a three way countback from visitor Mark Hannigan and presidentJeff Lodding after all three compiled an impressive 38 points.

Dave thanked Peter Lawrence and ‘other’ playing partners for their assistance throughout the round.

All nearest the pins went off with Jeremy Ezard capturing the third, Joe Labas driving one onto theeighth, John Hurley narrowly getting the job done on 13 and Wayne LeCerf nearing perfection by stuffing it to two feet on 16.

Thanks to Lindsay Hall for his sponsorship and ongoing support of the Waterboy Cup. The pennant team once again travelled to Tatura and after a bit of reshuffling of the side due to some unavailability, managed to secure a tie 2.5 to 2.5.

A great result against the highly fancied Shepparton side and the best start to the season for some time with two wins and a draw from three games.

GOULBURN VALLEY VETERANS THE Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers Association will start its 2023 program at Kyabram Parkland Golf Club on Monday, January 30 for a 4BBB event.

They start the day with an early assembly time of 8.30am to beat the potential heat of the day and to allow

time for a short and efficient AGM at the conclusion of play.

A number of the 2022 committee have served for a long time and are looking forward to a well deserved break.

Please consider you ability to help out and be prepared to come forward when the committee nominations are called at the AGM. New members are welcome to join on this day, but are advised to arrive early to complete the registration process.

What better way to join than to seek out an active GV Vet member at your club and ask him to partner you in the four ball.

The year runs January to December and the annual joining fee is $20.

Euroa teams look for minor premiership

By Mark Borthwick TENNIS resumed from the Christmas break and there was a sense of optimism by several Euroa teams looking towards the minor premiership in four rounds time.

In particular Jake Hill’s St Pauls A team is travelling nicely with a number of lower teams to come on the road home.

Marlene Hanrahan’s Moglonemby team has a similar run but must face the powerful Avenel Red and then St Pauls in the final game of the home and away.

The third Euroa team, Longwood Lawn is in fourth spot but has a harder road to travel.

Let us hope for three teams in the top four.

In division B, Caroline Keenan’s St Pauls team is climbing the ladder nicely especially knocking off the second team on Saturday.

Now to the nitty gritty.

Moglonemby played Gooram at home with special thanks to Hugh Salmon and Phil Mollison filling in for them.

The match started off very tight with Kristen Davey and Sue Vaughan steeling the set from Judy Sands and Kim McCabe 8-7.

Grant Davey and Michael Nolan delivered a tie breaker win

also over Hugh and Phil.

The Gooram girls with Julie Harrington and Judy won 8-6 over Kristen and Mary Kelly whilst Grant and Dan Godsmark had an 8-4.

There was not much between the two sides until it got to the mixed where Mogs was too strong winning all three sets and coasting to a 20-game win.

Dan Godsmark had a great day winning all three sets by 13 games.

St Pauls took on Euroa Lawn in a one-sided affair winning all nine sets and a 43 game buffer to give them a percentage booster (Jake Hill can pay Row Ellis later).

Jake only lost five games for the afternoon which was nearly equalled by Faye Mollison also having a cracking afternoon winning 18 games.

Row Ellis came close for Euroa losing 6-8 with Kylie Ross and her son Caid Miller in the mixed.

Longwood Lawn travelled to the hard courts of Benalla Gold which is usually a distinct advantage to the home team.

However, this week Longwood’s women were on fire ably captained by Deb Seach who was 14 games up with a three-set winning margin.

Molly Redfern was outstanding winning all her sets and be-

ing 16 games up, but the best was set by Leanne Armstrong up by 18 games.

Jacob Tarran was the best of the men only dropping one set by a tie breaker and being 10 up on the day.

Longwood cleaned up in the three mixed sets storming to a 7-2 sets victory by 35 games.

In division B St Pauls played highly fancied Swanpool but on the grass at home.

St Pauls were a different team with Olivia Gall and Kelly Hill smashing an 8-1 start and then Olivia and Caroline Keenan backing it up with an 8-4.

Kelly then got back on court with Caroline with an 8-1 placing the women in a three-zip position and up by 18 games.

The Swanpool men pegged it back by winning all their sets, but the deficit had St Pauls head into the mixed being eight games up.

Kelly Hill rounding a dominant day combining with Greg Rowe for an 8-1 win making it nearly impossible for Swanpool to win.

In fact, despite them winning more sets, St Pauls won by nine games.

Kelly easily got BOG only dropping three games for the afternoon.

Neither team were travelling well, but Craig was determined to turn things around and welcomed back Maddie Andrews and Dan Mawson to help the team.

Dan and Craig lost a close one 6-8 and then again with John Anderson 7-8 but Captain Craig and John fought back for the men with an impressive 8-1.

Craig then backed it up in the mixed with Kalarni which ensured a win by 10 games, their first for the season.

CFA competitions return as Euroa continues to impress EUROA CFA was back running teams this weekend as they competed in Melton.

The early morning was definitely worth it, with the juniors coming home with three firsts, two seconds, two thirds and five top five placings.

This is a huge effort considering over 50 per cent of the team are new to the sport.

The seniors had a great day too, placing first in the female hydrant race with a new record being set as well as a three top five placings.

Everyone who participated in the day did an amazing job and is highly commended for there efforts.

The teams will now rest up before heading to Bendigo in early February.

ALL SMILES: All juniors had a blast, for many it was their first ever competition.

By Tomas Fogarty Euroa 3-123 (M Walters 37* retired, E Saxon 19* retired) defeated Mooroopna 7-65 (K Wolfenden 2/4, A Wilson 1/3) AFTER the school holiday break, Euroa hosted Mooroopna at the Memorial Oval on a sweltering Friday evening for a one-day match.

The added incentive of this match was that the winner would advance to the one-day final, to be played on Australia Day. Winning the toss, Euroa had no hesitation in batting first and they got off to a solid start.

An unfortunate mix up saw in form opener Archie Wilson (5) run out early, bringing Wil Smyth (16* retired) to the crease to partner up with Mitch Walters (37* retired).

Both players batted with intent and showed controlled aggression with their shot selection and pulled of some impressive big hitting.

Mitch finished with a flurry, hitting three sixes in a row to retire on 37 after his allotted 20 balls.

The pair put on a 52 run partnership and gave the team a very solid foundation to post a high score.

Walter Jackson (16* retired) and Ethan Saxon (19* retired) went about their innings in a more circumspect manner, accumulating their runs through quick singles and continually rotating the strike.

This was just as effective as the earlier batting display as they ticked over the scoreboard with a run rate better than a run a ball.

Euroa headed out to bowl and were very sharp in the field from the start, keeping the pressure on with Mooroopna on the back foot.

This culminated in Mitch Walters and Wil Smyth combining again to cause a run out.

From this point Euroa starved Mooroopna of runs, with a steady flow of wickets sealing the win.

All bowlers contributed to the victory, with Kusuma Wolfenden (2/4) providing the best figures whilst Jai McMillan (1/7) broke through to

claim his first wicket in the U16 competition.

Mooroopna finished on 7/65 after their allocated 20 overs.

This was the last home and away match of the year with Euroa making both the one-day final and the semifinal of the competition proper.

Next week, Euroa will play the one-day final on Australia Day against Old Students at Kialla.

Euroa falls short in 3 grades

By NICK McCABE A GRADE Euroa 10/132 defeated by Old Students 3/135.

AFTER round eight not going ahead due to heat, the Sherbourne Terrace Haisman Shield A Grade Competition returned to Friendlies Oval for round nine with Euroa playing host to Old Students.

Euroa won the toss and elected to bat.

Scott Hamilton was dismissed early whilst Vaughn Kirk got the innings rolling for the home side before being bowled for 17.

It was Nic Hill (27) and Andrew Squires (30) that stabilized Euroa’s innings combining for a 60 run stand before the pair fell consecutively to the bowling of Old Students’ O’Brien.

Lachie Hill hit a late cameo of 21 before Euroa were bowled out in 37 overs for 132, a total that would require some tight bowling to defend.

The Old Students top order looked in control of the run chase and batting conditions from the onset made bowling for the magpies extremely difficult.

Sham Dadallage toiled away relentlessly, bowling a tight nine over spell

conceding only 20 runs.

Vaughn Kirk, Cohen Paul and Ryan Hill took one wicket each but ultimately the Old Students batsmen were a class above chasing down Euroa’s total in the 34th over at 3/135.

B GRADE Euroa 9/93 defeated by Karramonus 6/94 EUROA travelled to Vibert Reserve where they were hosted by Karramonus.

Euroa won yet another toss and elected to bat.

Karramonus were bowling tight line and lengths making batting difficult for the visitors which never really allowed their innings to kick start.

Fletcher Paul and Ethan Saxon both top scored for Euroa with 19 runs each and after the allotted 45 overs Euroa were left at 9/93.

The Euroa bowlers worked hard at defending a small total, Henry and Walter Jackson as well as Connor McCombe took two wickets each which kept Euroa in the game.

However, with patience the Karramonus batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking over and eventually chased down the total of 93.

C GRADE Central Park/St Brendans 10/90 defeated Euroa 10/87

ROUND 13 of the Jim Mcgregor C Grade Shield saw Euroa play host to Central Park/St Brendans at Memorial Oval.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bowl on a wicket that is usually ‘bowler friendly’, Euroa were confident they could keep the visitors to a low total.

Jack Walters was the standout with figures of 4/4 after three overs - a remarkable spell from a 14 year old.

Archie Wilson took three wickets of his own whilst Grayson Kirk, Russell Downie and Ollie Wilson cleaned up the Central Park tail, the visitors bowled out for 90.

Knowing it was a difficult batting surface, the Euroa openers began their account with caution before the wickets started to fall.

Russell Downie top scored with 21 but this was not enough for the home side, Euroa falling an agonizing three runs short all out for 87.
