Rail precinct wish By GUS RIDDER INDI Independent MP Helen Haines has called on the Federal Government to commit $100,000 to develop a community-led plan for the Euroa railway precinct. Dr Haines discussed the need for better rail services and said the $100,000 would fund council to engage the community and develop a plan for the precinct that maximises connectivity, accessibility, heritage, and amenity. This announcement
echoed the recent statements by Euroa MP Steph Ryan and shadow minister for roads in the Victorian legislative assembly, who had recently slammed the state of regional public transport. “The unreliability and neglect of Victoria’s public transport infrastructure is a handbrake on regional Victoria’s growth,” Ms Ryan said. “Our regions are growing
rapidly, and we need to put in place the foundations to support local people to travel between towns and to the city.” While at the station, Dr Haines heard directly from locals about their concerns regarding the planned redevelopment in the town around the rail line. The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is set to make a recommendation to
the Victorian Government shortly about whether the road bridge should be replaced with an even larger road bridge, or a road underpass option, which has been largely viewed as the preferred option for locals following a vocal community campaign. Dr Haines stated her credentials for making an impact on the rail decision. ■ Continued page 2
